Contractors beware of Thumbtack. My experience with this platform has been overall negative. Many of the leads I received are very questionable. The prospect will inquire about a job and then no communication is established and Thumbtack will charge you ridiculous fees for the lead. This has happened more than ten times. Every time this happens I request a refund. Most of the time I'm denied a refund for a frivolous lead. As this can reoccur frequently in a week and all of a sudden you've spent $100's even $1000's with no scheduled jobs. This company will take your money!!! You are forewarned.

I wish I could say I have fond memories of using Thumbtack, but my recent experiences have led me on quite the rollercoaster ride—one that I just can’t recommend to anyone anymore. I started with hopes of finding quality service providers, but I can only describe my journey post-2022 as thoroughly disheartening.

Initially, Thumbtack had the makings of an excellent platform. However, over the years, I've watched it go from a reliable lead generator to what feels like a hollow shell of its former self. Their phone support is less than useless, often rerouted between phone agents back and forth without any helpful resolution to actual service inquiries. When I called in hopes of settling a misunderstanding, I was provided with a dizzying matinee of outdated terms & conditions—it was as if I had entered some alternate dimension of customer service.

It was puzzling, to say the least. Browsing their website, I'd come across specific terms that should apply, but attempting to apply them was like piecing together a jigsaw puzzle with half the pieces missing. When I asked customer service about the inconsistencies, I was given vague references to “outdated” online policy. Really? In a digital-age company, that’s a major red flag.

As if that wasn’t frustrating enough, I've noticed more and more fake leads cluttering the platform. Instead of helping businesses find genuine work and clients, Thumbtack seemed to have regressed to a place where the leads felt like ghost whispers—there one minute and gone the next. I opted to give it one more shot, hoping they would salvage our relationship, but the toll-free number operated like an emotional black hole, particularly when trying to connect about my actual queries, not sales jargon.

All in all, it saddens me to see a company with so much potential evolve into yet another shadow of what came before, much like experiences with Yelp that also ended in frustration more often than expectation. I truly hope Thumbtack turns things around, as I’d love for future customers to reconnect with the genuine service they used to promise—but as it stands now, I can no longer be part of this increasingly disappointing narrative.

I recently had a disappointing experience with Thumbtack. Despite being located in New Jersey, I was charged for a lead generated in Texas that I couldn’t pursue. I reached out to their support team, explaining the situation and requesting a refund, but they refused to offer one. Each time I contacted them, they just reiterated their policy without genuinely addressing my concern or offering a fair resolution. As a professional who depends on quality leads in my area, I’m frustrated by their lack of responsiveness and unwillingness to provide reasonable support. Thumbtack should be more mindful of their users’ needs and ensure that charges are fair and appropriate. Would not recommend if you’re seeking reliable, customer-focused service.

Thumbtack doesn't treat their Business partners with even a shred of respect. They sent me a bunch of useless leads from other states, I contested the charges and they said they can't control how customers mis-categorize their requests and refused to refund the Lead Charges. They racked up $100 in charges in a span of 2 hours and refused to refund it even though all but 1 of those leads was un-actionable.

I told them if they didn't refund me, I would close my account. As a real business with 5-star reviews on Google and other platforms, I don't mind boycotting them. Ultimately, their customer service could not negotiate a resolution, and I have closed my account with them. Do not do business with them, they will take your money with a smile and give you nothing back. You've been warned.

I am a Thumbtack Pro, or I used to be one. I started with them since the beginning, that was about 5 or 6 years ago, they used to charge the right amount, the quality of the leads was great. My business was making money using only Thumbtack. Now I barely use them. Why, what changed? They've got greedier, now they are a public company. Just yesterday, I started to get leads, but all of them for things I don't do. I sell blinds, shades and drapes, which is under "window treatment installation or repair" but ALL the people who contacted me yesterday, wanted someone to install hurricane shutters, which is something I don't do. I am not a handyman.

Requested a refund, at this point the refund is about $100 or more. They tell me that the charge is right and if I don't want to do those, I have to modify my services listed. Well Hurricane shutters, to my knowledge is not window treatment and is installed outside. Gladly, my business does not need the poor service that Thumbtack is offering me. So I lower the amount of money I would allow them to take from me. I cannot recommend a business like that. My business warranty, which is how and why people contact me, it's 100%. They might not care much what a professional has to say, they only care about share holders now. But if they don't fix that mentality, they will not have a business anymore.

I started with the company in 2012. I was likely one of the only ones in my area, possibly my state. I had hundreds over leads daily. So many I could pick and choose which I wanted. Even ended up hiring others along with my self to take in all the jobs. That changed in 2018. In 2018 they began stealing money. Literally every lead .2 cents. When I was getting hundreds daily this added up. Then from there they doubled the Cost per lead; then tripled. Then began sending fake leads; computer generated fraudulent leads. Or a customer I've already had; using their information a second, or third time without the customer even being aware. As I checked with those clients. Then when I sent a complaint about a lead that made me uncomfortable and was illegal. They shut down my profile and ability to use the app further. Despite me having over 300 reviews and being hired over 1500 times. I was top on there platform.

Overall they became similar to all companies who take a turn and greed feeds them instead of integrity. Honestly they should be shut down. Oh and another key component, the reason their leads are found so much is because Google funded this company 100million. They are making sure they get their money by using their search engine to populate Thumbtack.

I used to love Thumbtack many years ago. I just closed my life coaching service on Thumbtack today. They double charged me for a client who has never called me, won't pick up the phone when I tried to call. They have a 30-day refund (if you can get the refund, which Thumbtack almost always now says your refund request was denied). I called on day 31 and asked if they would refund both charges, which amounted to almost $150 total. They declined it, but they thanked me for my 8 years of being a client!! Mind you this is for a life coaching job in which I would have to work 2 sessions with a client just to break even. This is so wrong - Thumbtack should only be earning a portion of what I earn, not more than I earn.

In my life-coaching business, it isn't like going to a therapist, where you go for years, but usually the client has one problem that can be solved in a couple of sessions. Thumbtack sets the pricing and the minimum is $54 and up to $140. I told the Thumbtack guy that makes no sense. I provide other services where I charge $300 per hour, and I net maybe 5K for the whole job, so yeah I would be willing to spend $100 for a lead. But these Thumbtack people are clueless - totally unprofessional to charge $140 for a job in which you might only make $85, a few hundred dollars at most. I want to set my lead pricing for life coaching to $15, but with a $54 minimum, it doesn't make financial sense. I terminated that service.

I also have complained to Thumbtack that they don't tell the public that the professional is paying for the lead...so people maybe have a bad day and sign up for something and the next day they change their mind thinking it is no big deal - no harm done. If they knew the harm done - that I spent $140 to get their name, or if they had skin in the game and had to pay $25 nonrefundable fee to Thumbtack, would they think twice before signing up?

One service that caught my attention was the direct lead feature, which was supposed to connect me with potential clients in my working area. Unfortunately, this experience has been far from what was promised. Firstly, many of the leads I receive are located well outside the areas I serve, making it frustrating and pointless to pursue them. Even worse, these "direct" leads are not exclusive—other pros are sent the same leads, yet I’m still being charged for them, regardless of whether I secure the job.

Despite numerous calls from Thumbtack pushing various forms and strategies to improve my visibility, I haven’t seen the return on investment they claim. I’m consistently charged for leads that don’t align with my target market or service area, and I find the platform’s value highly questionable. For me, this service has been more of a drain on my resources than a benefit. I wouldn't recommend Thumbtack for businesses looking for quality leads. If I could give zero stars I would -- I would give negative stars! I started out with thumbtack several years ago and I was a "top pro" for many years, then they changed their "platform" and now look at legitimate businesses as their next greedy meal. Initially the prices for leads were very reasonable, and I rarely, if ever had a lead that resulted in a no-reply, or disconnected phone numbers, or received leads that did not even HAVE A DOG! ( I am a dog trainer.)

NOW: they "show" your profile along with every other dog trainer (or whatever your field is...) and ENCOURAGE potential clients to connect with MORE providers than maybe the one or two they chose. They DO NOT disclose to the potential customer/client that the provider is charged for every single "lead" (I use the term loosely) they receive. Up until a few years ago it was a great way to get clients. NOW, they keep changing the "rules" and the costs keep going up. Now they literally have providers bidding AGAINST other providers by upping the amount a provider is willing to pay. So, if i.e. If trainer A charges $10 and trainer B charges $50 for the same service (Based on offerings, and level of education, and what their offering provides ) trainer B "could" absorb the lead fee of $40, but trainer A could not (at least not if they are in the BUSINESS of earning a living.)

In addition they offer "canned" replies for an outrageous monthly fee, so if a trainer is not able to answer a lead right away-- it will seem to the customer that they got a quick reply from said trainer, which they may then start corresponding with an hire before the average trainer can get back to them. In my case I typically reply in 1-2 hours if I am out with a client. But another trainer will "reply" in 4 minutes. Come ON! How is this even okay??? In addition, "leads" are more likely than not to be 1. not read, 2. not answered, 3. wrong phone number, 4. disconnected phone number, 5. not an actual person looking for a service.

I personally have received more "wrong and disconnected" phone numbers in the past year than I did in the 10 years prior. They deny the requests for refund as "not meeting their requirements" - to which I ask "what ARE they." On their own "Refund Request" form, it will list things like "bad phone number" or "no response" or "customer stopped communicating" or "not the decision maker" etc. BUT those are the very reasons they will deny a refund as "Not meeting their requirement for a refund."

In the past providers had the opportunity to "need more information" from the buyer. This allowed the provider to ask questions like "do you have a dog currently" or "do you have a doctor's letter for a service dog," etc. so those without a dog, or those wanted to get their dog certified as a service dog so they can fly free when the family goes on vacation, can get a reply that says a. I can help with prepurchase of your new dog for $xx or b. It's against the law to train a dog as a service animal to avoid plane tickets for them, without pays $25-40 out of the providers pocket.

How am I even able to sell my service from a lead with a wrong or disconnected phone number? Or a 12 year old that didn't get permission from parents to even seek out dog training? Or someone that doesn't have a dog and doesn't even plan on getting a dog? Or even better, someone asking about dog boarding when it isn't even a service I provide? These are legitimate leads according to THUMBTACK and non-refundable. That is absolutely wrong. How is that ethical or even -- LEGAL???? They just provide blanket denials for refund requests. SO why even OFFER them?

This once good company is the worst or the worst kind of bottom feeder. Users do not pay them- The providers do!! Yet they outright charge ridiculous amounts, and deny legitimate refunds. And this whole bidding thing is pitting trainers against each other and may in fact be the reason my industry has priced itself out of the homes that need their services the most!!! It's like all 100 dogs being let out into the Roman Roman Colosseum to fight over a 10 oz sirloin. Ridiculous.. and isn't this in SOME WAY illegal???

I am extremely disappointed with my experience with Thumbtack. The customer service is simply awful. There is no adequate support when you need help, and communication is practically nonexistent. They take forever to respond, and when they finally do, the answers are vague and unhelpful. One of the biggest frustrations is the charge for leads. They charge a significant amount for leads that you often don't even get a chance to speak with the client. Many of these "leads" never return messages, and you end up paying for something that generates no return. It's like throwing money away!

Additionally, Thumbtack's lead system seems to be manipulated. I received several irrelevant leads that were clearly not interested in the services I offer. It feels like they are more interested in making money from the charges than providing quality leads. The dispute resolution process is another joke. When you try to contest an unfair charge, it's like talking to a wall. There is no flexibility or understanding from their side. They simply refuse to listen and resolve the issues of the professionals using the platform. In summary, my experience with Thumbtack was terrible. Poor customer service, unfair charges, and a faulty lead system. I do not recommend this company to anyone. It's a waste of time and money.

Do not engage with this company as a contractor or pro. Their lead system is unfair and they will make getting a refund complicated to do. How it works- if a lead reaches out to 5 pros, all 5 pros get charged whether or not the lead decides to work with them or not. I literally had one lead reach out, then in the next message say "disregard this message". I got charged for that. And I'm sure the other pros did as well. Be careful with their refunds. Instead of refunding it back to the original payment, they will issue it as a credit. You have to notify them that they refund it back to the original payment. I lost money because they didn't want to refund the credits when I decided to close my account.

Thumbtack is the WORST if you are a professional! They seem to forget that the "Pros" are their customers also. They are completely non transparent with customers about how Pros get charged, have a criminally arbitrary scale for charging for leads, many of the leads do not match the Pro's criteria, allow customers to "shotgun" Pros (which is fine, but still charge the Pro's the same amount for the lead even if it is less valuable then), have a completely shoddy refund protocol for fake or erroneous leads (including a patronizing message when they give you a partial refund out of the goodness of their heart), and incredibly limiting structure for Pros to charge. It's nice that they round everything off with a nearly absent customer support. I cannot stress how lame this service is for professionals.

When I first started with Thumbtack ten years ago it was great. It felt fair, the leads were reasonably priced and though they've never once issued me a refund for a lead, they would at least credit me for the ones that were obviously within their terms. As time has passed however it's become clear their only goal is to take as much cash from as many contractors per lead as possible while making it impossible to get a refund. For instance- a customer who contacts and then disappears without hiring any of the 3 contractors they contacted- no refund gotta pay. A lead that is not 100 square feet when you have preferences set to 100 or more- no refund gotta pay. No phone customer service even though they now want us to talk to customers directly. Be careful reviewing them here too, they will find you and retaliate.

Well, I had a customer that had lost her job, then failed to pay for my last two invoices. She only wanted to pay for $100 of the $700+ invoice and expected me to continue her project. I've notified her that she's in violation of the agreement and terminated the project. She was unhappy and continued to harass me, called me names, threatened with law suits, and left me with a 1 star review after giving me a 5 star review previously.

I showed Thumbtack all of the communications that I've had with her, yet they wouldn't take down the slander. Even given mountains of evidences of this customer who took off with my work and unpaid bills, they will not stick up for me in any way. They did not compensate me for her unpaid bills like they claimed they will, they did not take down her slander like they said they will over the phone, and although they allowed the customer to modify her review, they would not allow me to modify my comments once it's posted. Who is paying for Thumbtack? Last I remember I had been their paying customers just so that I can get such unfair treatment. Thumbtack identifies everyone listed in their site as a "Pro", but, has no mechanism to qualify them if they really know what they do. In 2 jobs, I was hit with the so called 'Pro', renegotiating the price on the work start day onsite and in 1 of the jobs, the contractor left me with a ugly work, worser than it was. Clearly the contractor had no clue how to do the job and brought a helper "Pro", that was even worse.

My only reason to hire this contractor was that Thumbtack calls this person a "Pro" and I trusted Thumbtack on their claim. Contractor was not a "Pro" by any means, only it was Thumbtack's false claim. Even the contractor himself said that to me, well after he left me with an incomplete work. Thumbtack wants me to now submit a review about the contractor. So they can pit us against each other and simply watch the show. I declined, am not doing that. I would rather want Thumbtack taking ownership of their false claim and cover my loss themselves. I am not going to battle with a below grade dude. We advise against using this company for home renovations, as they failed to meet our expectations and even caused further damage. Despite hiring them with hopes of receiving professional, top-notch work, our project has been riddled with numerous issues.

The expensive lighting fixtures we purchased are already malfunctioning and completely broken. Several sections of the painting job remain incomplete, and there are persistent problems with the tile work, especially noticeable on our front patio where the tiles are uneven and retain water from the pool. These issues, among others, require immediate attention.

Additionally, we are dismayed by the subpar repairs, the replacement of tinted windows in the shower area without consulting us, and the dismissive attitude toward our concerns about tile quality and door refinishing. The flooring in our master bedroom, installed incorrectly without proper underlayment, is now lifting and cracking, despite assurances that it would "settle."

Communication with Oscar and his team has been extremely poor, characterized by instances of no-call, no-show, and a disregard for our attempts to reach them. We were compelled to resort to impersonation to elicit a response, casting doubt on the reliability of their services. Considering the substantial $40,000 investment in this project, we expected a level of professionalism and craftsmanship that has been sorely lacking. We demand prompt resolution of these issues and clear commitments regarding warranties and guarantees for the work completed.

Unfortunately, our trust in Mosqueda Renovations has been irreparably damaged, leading us to file a complaint with the Arizona Board of Registrar’s. Their inspection validated our concerns, but more importantly, we no longer feel comfortable allowing Oscar into our home. Their dishonesty and lack of integrity have wasted both our time and resources, not to mention the interest we are paying on this subpar work. It's important to note that filing a complaint with the Arizona Registrar of Contractors mandates allowing the same contractor back into your home, even though it's been proven they are not capable. Despite adhering to this requirement and allowing them back into our home, they were still unable to rectify the issues.

As a professional service provider, I am utterly disgusted with my experience on Thumbtack. Let me be unequivocally clear: Thumbtack's business model is nothing short of predatory. They lure you in with promises of connecting you with potential clients, only to slap you with exorbitant charges for leads that are often irrelevant or unfiltered junk.

First and foremost, Thumbtack's pricing structure is an absolute scam. They charge professionals for leads, regardless of whether those leads are legitimate or not. It's like paying for a fancy dinner only to find out it's a moldy sandwich. What's worse is that these charges add up quickly, draining your hard-earned money with little to no return on investment.

But it's not just the predatory charges that make Thumbtack a nightmare to deal with. The quality of leads they provide is abysmal. More often than not, I've found myself wasting precious time and resources on leads that go absolutely nowhere. It's as if Thumbtack doesn't bother to vet the leads at all, leaving professionals to sift through a mountain of garbage in search of a single diamond.

What's even more infuriating is Thumbtack's utter unwillingness to help professionals get what they pay for. When you try to reach out for support or request a refund for bogus leads, you're met with silence or a runaround. It's like talking to a brick wall – frustrating and utterly pointless. I refuse to be a part of Thumbtack's unethical practices any longer. I urge fellow professionals to steer clear of this cesspool of a platform and explore other avenues for generating leads. Google Ads, Angie's List, or any other reputable platform would be a better investment of your time and money. In conclusion, Thumbtack is a disgrace to the professional services industry. They prey on hardworking professionals, offering false promises and delivering nothing but disappointment. Save yourself the headache and avoid Thumbtack like the plague.

Thumbtack as a pro is solely based on paying for leads. Customers are unaware every prob they contact gets charged as they mostly have free account. Thumbtack preys on small businesses and charges for every lead with little chance of getting refund for bad leads. There is no way for a pro to know if leads are even legit as 75% who reach out don’t even read the messages they are sent, 10-15% don’t match preset criteria or budgets set, and the rest are legitimate leads. There is no way to even verify that leads are legitimate. Anyone can produce false leads so they get paid. If they want to be a quality trusted company they should come up with a monthly plan that’s reasonable for leads and then charge a fee when jobs are booked from those leads. Can’t fake jobs but sure can fake leads.

In fall of 2023 I hired a cement worker through Thumbtack to replace 2 driveways and two sidewalks, knowing that permits would need to be pulled for the sidewalks. The contractor estimated it may be an additional $700 for permits. We prepaid for the driveway job, and upon completion we paid the remaining balance plus $1,641.00 prepayment toward sidewalk materials for the next project. When the contractor came back from the city permit office, he told us he was raising his price by $10,999.00 for permits. Since hiring the city costs less than that, we declined and asked for our deposit back. The contractor told us he was keeping our money because "we had a deal" and we were not allowing him to complete the sidewalks (for an additional $11 grand). Then he told us he was leaving to Mexico and would return the money in January (he didn't).

We tried to file a complaint with Thumbtack, but were told that this was a "price disagreement", and Thumbtack would not pursue it. We have the original estimate and a recording of the contractor verifying the payments made to him in cash and the dates they were made. It's not worth the money to get a lawyer to get my money back, and I'm upset because Thumbtack guarantees that this won't happen, but used the loophole that since we wouldn't pay an extra $11,000 for permits, it was his right to steal $1,641 paid towards a job that was never done.

2/21/24 Bam Bam Remodeling. Promised to finish tiny little bathroom flooring and floor insulation, and drywall. Approx 40 sq ft. They only put in barely 1/2 of the insulation, not even 1/2 of the flooring, and zero drywall which was only 4 small pieces in this tiny bathroom. THIS WAS THE ENTIRE JOB. Holes in the floor were busted out with a hammer instead of using a hole saw. Boards were cut too short and they were putting in tiny pieces to fill in the gaps instead of cutting the flooring in normal complete pieces. Flooring pieces cut to where pieces were fitting too tight and would not allow expansion. They had no intention of using subfloor adhesive and that is what subfloor adhesive is made for. Corner 2x4s cut too short to even reach the floor. Flooring cut too short to even reach beams to attach to and were bowing when stepped on. Insulation that was barely put in completely fell to the ground in basement.

Absolutely zero drywall put up even after being told some pieces were already cut and ready to just put up. All of this left in this condition when they quit job. All of this in 5 hours they were here. THESE WERE THE ONLY THINGS NEEDED FOR THIS JOB AND THEY COULD NOT EVEN DO ANY OF IT. They refuse to do anything to resolve all of these problems or refund my money for their absolute do nothing incompetence. Significant waste of materials. Significant damage to my property. Using my tools instead of their own tools. The most incompetent excuse of handyman service in history. They owe me $400 + Wasted materials + damage to my property.
