I hired a handyman through Thumbtack who caused severe structural damage to my Miami condominium by drilling into a post-tensioned ceiling slab, fracturing a tendon and causing concrete collapse. I immediately reported the incident the same day it occurred, provided extensive documentation including engineering assessments, repair proposals, and photos of the damage.
Thumbtack denied my Property Damage Guarantee claim by reclassifying the structural damage as "faulty installation" – a convenient exclusion buried in their terms that essentially renders their guarantee meaningless. Their own policy requires pros to have liability insurance, yet they failed to verify this before matching me with the handyman, who had no coverage. The "guarantee" is deceptive marketing. They advertise it prominently to build trust and attract customers, but when actual property damage occurs, they use vague exclusions to avoid paying. The distinction between "property damage" and "faulty installation" is entirely subjective and applied retroactively to deny legitimate claims.
I've filed complaints with the Florida Attorney General, Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and Better Business Bureau. Thumbtack's response has been to simply reaffirm their denial without addressing the core issue: their guarantee is worthless if they can redefine any damage to fit an exclusion. If you're considering using Thumbtack, know that their Property Damage Guarantee provides no real protection. You're better off hiring professionals directly and verifying their insurance yourself. Don't be fooled by their marketing – when damage happens, you're on your own.

I am extremely disappointed with this platform. Initially, when I started using it, I was contacted by several potential clients who actually responded, and we were able to do business together. However, over the past year, it has turned into the same garbage scam as the other companies offering this service: we receive a lead, we respond immediately—and get charged for it—only to find that the potential client doesn't exist or is just spam. The worst part is that I recommended it to some friends, and now they are going through the exact same thing. This whole thing is a complete scam.

Thumbtack is one of the most predatory platforms I have ever used as a professional. They charge pros immediately for leads that are clearly unqualified, nonresponsive, or completely unusable. There is no meaningful vetting process. I was charged for leads where the client did not speak English, which made the job impossible to execute, and there was no refund. You pay whether the lead is viable or not. Period. Their so called “support” for pros is essentially nonexistent. When issues arise, you are met with scripted responses and zero accountability. There is no real protection for the people actually funding their platform. Worse, I was targeted by a scammer through Thumbtack. The fallout from that incident resulted in my bank account being shut down. The financial and emotional damage was significant. There was no proactive protection, no responsibility taken, and no meaningful assistance provided.
The business model is deeply concerning. They charge customers to find pros. They charge pros to access customers. Yet there is absolutely no guarantee of legitimacy, safety, or actual job placement. The financial risk sits almost entirely on the small business owner. For independent entrepreneurs trying to build real businesses, this platform feels less like a marketplace and more like a system designed to extract money from both sides without ensuring value to either. Proceed with extreme caution.

This is one of the worst lead generation companies, they will charge you for a lead usually between 100-200 that is also sold to 5 or more contractors. Customer don't answer or it was a fake customer in an attempt to show its worth. DON'T NO USE THUMBTACK! IT'S A WASTE OF MONEY!

I had a recent very bad experience with a Thumbtack selected for me house cleaner. The whole reason for this 1 star rating is to say beware of Thumbtack. If I could give a zero star I would. Thumbtack does NOT vet their “pros”. This “pro” showed up 4 hours late, never actually finished 4 rooms, no mop, no vacuum, had to borrow dust/cleaning rags from me, reorganized my medicine cabinet, used Lysol as a dusting aid. Yipes. So BEWARE. Taking this to Thumbtack is how I found out, in writing from them, that they expect customers to check out the “pro”. So…..heads up with them.

I was in need of someone trustworthy to clean a relative's apartment that is located 2 hours away from where I live (and within a private home). I've never used an app to find a professional before and I was super nervous about filling out the request form. Once I did, I got an immediate response from Delma from Souza Cleanings. She couldn't have been more wonderful! She was willing to start the job as soon as I was ready, she took her own time to go and look at the space prior to the quote, and let me tell you.. This was not an easy job. I'm still amazed by how she managed to get the entire job done in one day and it was beyond perfect! She even folded the towels in a decorative pattern! I can't recommend Delma highly enough. I plan to share her contact information with relatives who live in the area. Thank you Thumbtack for helping to put me in touch with this lovely woman!

I would not recommend Uoj Triad Services Inc from Thumbtack to anyone. The driveway construction job they did for me was extremely sloppy and disappointing from start to finish. The concrete was poured unevenly, with visible dips and rough patches throughout. There are already cracks forming, and it hasn’t been long since the work was completed. The edges are messy, and the overall finish looks rushed and unprofessional.
Communication was also poor. Questions were either ignored or answered vaguely, and concerns about the quality of the work were brushed off. The cleanup was minimal, leaving debris behind and creating more work for me. For the amount of money charged, I expected professional results. Instead, I’m left with a driveway that looks subpar and will likely require repairs far sooner than it should. Very disappointed with the workmanship and overall experience. Unable to post photos due to the size of the photos (feel free to contact me for photo proof)

Executive coaches and life coaches RUN, DON'T WALK. I have used this platform for years -- originally as a very satisfied "top pro". This used to be (hands down) my favorite platform to secure leads and I literally used to invest happily an average of $750-1000 per week with this platform. Over the past 4 years, I have seen lead price jump from approximately $65 per lead to now $173 per lead. Understand that when they say "lead", they simply mean when ANYONE clicks your link for more information. Statistically (google this if you want verification), most coaches report the following: Low Response/High Ghosting Rates: Many users report that roughly 60% to 95% of leads fail to convert into a meaningful conversation.
Conversion to Discovery Call: "While data varies, many coaches find that only a small fraction, often well below 20-30%, actually book a discovery call or respond to initial contact". I've even had "leads" who responded that they didn't reach out to me that it was a scam lead. I've had MANY third parties who are reaching out without first checking with the person who would receive the coaching whether they are even open to the coaching. Never does Thumbtack agree to give a refund for these. And I would say that the majority of "leads" have no idea how much I charge because it seems to be hard to find when first searching.
Recently, they sent out an email claiming that we'd be able to dictate our own lead prices. For a few days, I thought that perhaps I might be able to get back to a reasonable lead price that once again made sense. Imagine my "surprise" when it turns out that it's Thumbtack who determines the extremely high lead price (reserving the right to arbitrarily raise it). Our ability to "control" our lead price is simply the choice to either agree to their set prices or not-- especially since the language leads most "kick the tires" people to select "open to coach's suggestion" (which is coincidentally the highest lead price).
I have no idea what happened to this platform but it would be virtually impossible to make the numbers work with the lead prices they currently set. Looks like I will once again be hiding my profile. If you are a coach, I could not more vehemently encourage you to avoid this platform at all cost until they change. And yes, I have shared the numbers with their customer service many times to encourage them to change (after all, they are losing thousands annually just from me). Each time, my input disappears into a dark whole. This has become a total scam and they apparently don't want professionals who are in the coaching space on their platform.

Incoherent leads and manipulative legal stipulations and customer service resolutions. If you want $600 taken from your account for signing up for their constant, aggressive, suggestion to set your account to unlimited budget, but then receive an onslaught of 17 leads ($600+) only to find that almost all of them don't match your profile lead preferences, and then you ask for a refund and they arbitrarily review and refund just under 50% as if "hey, we will split the difference with ya, now run along." and you tell them you want it ALL refunded and the customer support references their refund/legal policy. My account was set up to do work locally and also to provide IT remote support. Apparently on the buyer's end, this is not made clear, and apparently Thumbtack does not filter for users who are not meaning to ask for remote support. So their system is flawed and you will pay for it...

I can't speak on behalf of the pros because you can't communicate with them unless you get the app. It infuriates me that I have to have an app to do anything... Thumbtack consistently delivers a high volume of low-quality and unqualified leads, making it an inefficient and costly platform for contractors. In many cases, customers are simply exploring options rather than actively planning to move forward with a project. As a result, professionals end up paying for the same lead alongside multiple competitors, only to discover that the client is not ready, not serious, or not financially prepared to proceed.
This system creates frustration on both sides. Contractors waste time, money, and effort chasing prospects that rarely convert, while customers become overwhelmed and irritated by receiving numerous calls from different professionals after making what they believed was a simple inquiry. From experience, only a small fraction — perhaps one out of twenty leads — turns into a legitimate opportunity. Many customers are primarily seeking the lowest possible price rather than qualified professionals, which further undermines the value of the platform.
Additionally, Thumbtack lacks transparency in communicating to customers that their contact information is sold to multiple contractors, positioning the company as a middleman rather than a true matchmaking service. Overall, the platform delivers poor return on investment and is not a reliable source of meaningful business for professionals.

I wish I would have seen this before I had someone from them come out to install my washer and dryer pedestals. I asked the technician to be careful as I did not want any scratches on my sapphire blue paint. He took them in my garage and was going to lay them down on the concrete. I asked if he was going to use a blanket. He looked confused. I then offered him one of my blankets. He laid the washer down and started to put on the pedestal. I was cleaning up the dust in the laundry room and doing work. Came out and he needed to turn the washer to its back to screw the other screws in. When he did I noticed a huge fresh, deep scrape on the side of the washer. I then noticed that there was puddles of laundry detergent on my blanket and noticed that he did not removed the detergent tray before he laid the machine down. My heart dropped.
When he stood up the washer, detergent was pouring out the bottom side and from the top side when it was laying down. I grabbed the shop vac and tried to see if I could pull some of it out. I said that I hope that this did not just ruin my 1500 dollar washer. He responded, "Oh I don't think so". Got the machines back in the laundry room (still wiping up detergent seeping out from the side bottom. I started the washer to see if it would start. It did. I decided to let it run. Before he was leaving the machine shut off. I asked him if he turned it off and he said he did not. Went back and started it again. It started and he left. 3 minutes after he left I texted him saying I needed him to come back. He said "what's the problem". I said my washer stopped and there are no lights on it. He would not come back and said that I should put clothes in there as it may have a load sensor (it does not) and there was no lights when I turned it on.
It just said "cancelled" but when I hit the power button or turned the bobs, nothing happened. No lights or beeps. It finally came back on again. I noticed that the washer rocked. I texted him that and he responded with "well it was level when I left". I took a video of me rocking it and sent it to him. This was all within a matter of 10 minutes from when he drove away. HIs response was "can try leveling the feet some more. Hey just turn with a wrench". I'm sorry, is this not what I just gave you money to do? And you ruined my machine. I texted him letting him know that I have a GE technician coming out on Saturday and they will have to take apart the whole machine and get all the detergent out of it and make sure there is no other damage that the liquid caused and did not give him a good review for this. HIs response was LOVED... and then my message.
I called Thumbtack and let them know. Told them that I want to send them the bill for what the tech does when he/she comes out on Saturday. She asked me how much and I told her I have no idea till they come out and see. Her response was "I'm sorry for your inconvenience." I stopped her there and said this is not an inconvenience, your technician ruined my 1500 dollar Washer. I will see where this goes. I have videos and all the text back and forth with TJ the technician. I am not happy at all.

I highly don't recommend Thumbtack for professionals. They charge you for "direct leads" that almost never work. Last week Thumbtack withdraw from my bank account more than $200 and potential customers, don't respond to text and calls. They took my $127 for "customer" who canceled the job.

I had one of the worst experiences as a new service provider on Thumbtack. I was charged for leads I never received, never spoke to, and never even saw. Their policy says you only pay when a customer responds, but that is completely false. I ended up with almost $600 in charges without getting a single real customer. On top of that, my account was suddenly blocked without any explanation, and nobody has helped me fix the issue. Every time I asked for clarity, I received automated answers that did not address any of my evidence.
After reading many other reviews here, I realized this is not just happening to me. Many professionals are reporting the same problems: unfair charges, fake leads, blocked accounts, no transparency, and zero accountability. This is a repeated pattern, not an accident. Thumbtack is hurting honest small business owners, and in my opinion this situation is serious enough for a class action lawsuit. I do not recommend Thumbtack to any honest professional trying to build their business. If the system allowed me to give zero stars, I absolutely would.
Michelle, we're sorry for the lack of clarity you have received. That is helpful feedback for our team! All of our pros on Thumbtack are only charged for the leads that match the targeting preferences they have set. And although unresponsive customers can happen, our goal is to always provide high-quality leads.

I had the need for a deep cleaning of my home and went through Thumbtack because they supposedly screened and vetted the people they referred. Their website also indicates that they guarantee their workers. T and T cleaning came to do a deep cleaning for $250. She postponed so she took $20 off. Two of the bedrooms were to be left alone so Tanicia only had one bedroom plus bathrooms, kitchen and living area of a 1000 sf house. When she was done she asked me to look around. I didn’t feel I had to be thorough because Thumbtack had screened her. After she left we saw that the entire living and hallway were not dusted and a broken picture frame was broken and hidden. When I called thumbtack I was told they could only mediate they could not force her to refund. So much for guarantee! Do not recommend thumbtack or T and T cleaning!

I went on in search of a Handyman. A few came up but I didn't contact any of them. One contacted me and I hired him for several projects. He completed the projects and I paid him. He did not totally complete the projects. I called him and he did come back to complete them and is coming back again for further completion. I hired a cleaning service and one woman contacted me. She sounded nice, so I made an appointment for her to come on Friday. Two days ago, I paid her again without inspecting her work. Later in the day, I realized she barely did any cleaning and left things undone. Her initial charge was $180 for 3 hours. I had her help me with a few other things, so she wound up staying around another hour and a half.
When I asked her what I owed her, she said, $300 and wants it in cash. I had to go to the ATM to get the money. My card wasn't activated, so I had to go to the bank. I took a long time, so I decided to give her additional money. In the rush, I thought she had said $350, so I gave her $400; I was ok with the price until I looked around my apartment and realized she had hardly cleaned anything. She moved a lot of things around, such as accessories, but barely cleaned anything. I have to clean it myself. I called her about it, and she refuses to return or refund any money. Her name is Julie, and her company is Scrubby, Dub, Dub. She lives in Sussex, NJ.

One day in 2021 they deactivated my account due to a background check. I was very upset as I already believed I proved myself to be an honest and reputable business. Anyway it’s been a few years since then and my background check now passes. I reapplied on thumbtack and they said I passed and reactivated my account. I was happy to see my profile still there as I had left it years ago, all my reviews intact. Well today literally one day later my account is now deactivated again… I feel like they are playing games. I don’t know what’s going on over there but I’ve read many stories similar to mine. I've learned that Thumbtack can be a great source of income if you're looking for leads, but it's not the best choice to rely on as your only source of income. I made that mistake when I was working with them for a few months. Things were going great until my account got deactivated. Since it's against their policy to explain why, I can only guess what I could've done wrong myself. The Pro app had many glitches that affected my client's experiences. I couldn't a response to help fix the issues for my clients to be able to pay on thumbtack, which led me to not make any money at the beginning.
Since I wasn't getting any response, I used PayPal and Square App to get me by. I thought perhaps this platform was similar to "Bark" where we simply pay for their contact information, but I found out after getting deleted that it wasn't. The policy that prevents us from knowing what we did wrong feels like a slap in the face after investing so much into the leads. I never even asked for refunds from bad leads. I was in tears, feeling like I wasn't worth giving a second chance. Enforcing these types of policies to protect the company has led to innocent people to get behind on bills and potentially go homeless. Glitches on websites and apps occur all the time. Not everyone checks their spam folder every day. It's common for people to not read the list of policies and procedures while signing up. Mistakes happen.
Thumbtack is a platform that allows entrepreneurs to get their foot in the door. It helps clients nationwide, which helps contractors keep their businesses afloat. It's unfortunate that this platform has such a bad reputation with the way they treat their Pro members compared to the clients. I strongly believe that if they dedicated their teams to treat contractors and clients with the same amount of compassion and empathy, there'd be a lot more revenue to profit from. Perhaps enough to fix the Pro website and app. My goal with this review is not to hate on them. Now that I've had time to reflect, I see that anything that isn't constructive criticism doesn't make things better. I apologize for the policy errors I've made. I was still new to the platform and regret not reading the rules carefully. This is my last shot in hopes that they'll reconsider my appeal. If not, then at least I've learned a valuable lesson.
We understand the frustration that comes with losing access to your Thumbtack account. However, we do have to have all of our pros follow our terms of use in order to connect with potential customers.

When they arrived I noticed they were moving the treadmill with the screen attached. This is expressly against the advice provided by peloton. I confronted them regarding this and recorded the conversation. The contractor advised me to calm down and it would be okay. The peloton arrived to the new location damaged and needed to be serviced. I had to take off work to get it serviced and was without my peloton for 3 weeks.
I asked for a partial refund and thumbtack refused. Stating the contractor told them I wanted 2 weeks to tell them of an issue. This is despite me providing thumbtack video evidence of me complaining to the contractor the day of service, a negative review left on thumbtacks platform the day of service, and me provided the texts between me and the contractor the date of service indicating I was unhappy and it was damaged. Thumbtack did not stand behind the trust and safety policy. Left me to deal with the damages and I will never use the service again.

The sub that Nilsen (owner) sent didn't know how to convert to gas from heat pump and threw up his arms after 4 days saying, "It doesn't work and you need to have the propane tanks full (they were 40%)." We complied. Then he said, "Still not enough pressure so get bigger tanks." NO heat for 10 days. Nilsen sent a sub out on a Sunday to see the project. He ascertained that the tanks need not have been refilled as there was TOO much pressure. He fixed the problem and heating is now secure. He didn't know Nilsen and was sent by a third party. Thought this was a rental. It is not.

Case in point: J and A.(Jeremy ** and Andrew **). They are working without a licenses, are not supervised by a licensed plumber and are doing work that are not qualified to do. They are in the process of being sanctioned by L&I in Washington State at this time, and were a no show for their first scheduled hearing last summer. Inspections by two licensed plumbers verify their work to be substandard and not up to code. They have been incommunicado since the day they were paid.
** has a plumber trainee card, but is not working with a licensed plumber, and has claimed to be fully licensed and fully trained as a plumber. He has been fired from each of the three jobs he had as a trainee, and therefore decided to work independently... doing substandard unlicensed work. He also is not bonded or insured of course. They are working in SW Washington and Portland Oregon.

We’ve reported these leads and requested refunds as instructed, but many were denied without reason. To date, we’ve lost over $1,000+ on fake leads.
What makes it worse is the complete lack of support. We’ve reached out multiple times through phone and email, but Thumbtack employees have been unhelpful and dismissive. As a small business, every dollar matters, and being charged for invalid leads feels like exploitation, not support. If this continues, we’ll have no choice but to seek legal action. Thumbtack needs to take responsibility, fix the fake lead problem, and stop charging hard-working businesses for invalid requests. Right now, I cannot recommend this platform to any professional.
It’s disheartening to hear that your recent experiences with the leads have not been what you hoped for. We understand how important it is for you to connect with quality potential customers. That’s why we make it a priority to verify each lead on Thumbtack, ensuring they are real customers who align with your targeting preferences.
We'd love the chance to improve your support experience as well! Please give us a call at (866) 501-5809 so we can help make things right for you.

Thumbtack Pro here and new small business owner, and I haven't used this app for a super long time due to Thumbtack not being able to refund transactions that I was not hired for. While I do understand, that you can get refunds under certain circumstances, the truth is, most clients are looking for services way below my rate and they are located from 10-30 miles from me. I cannot provide a service that for a job that puts me at a loss.
I should also be refunded for being charged for a lead and customers do not even respond to messages in the app and calls. Refunds should also be given in the case where a customer hires another pro for obvious reasons. These refunds could go back to your Thumbtack account and should be accessible to be wired or transferred to your own bank account, given that it could be used otherwise to put into my business to grow as a small business. I am very disappointed with Thumbtack for not reaching other as well to further help new pros.
We understand the frustration that comes with unresponsive customers. However, as a lead-generating platform, we cannot promise a hire for each lead. Unfortunately, unresponsive customers can happen. Our hope, is that once the customer is ready to pick the project back up, they will have your contact to get things started! That is why we do not refund based on unresponsive customers. Hey Carlos, we'd love for you to have a better experience on Thumbtack! Here is a little more information about how charges work -

I signed up with Thumbtack as a general contractor and was charged $500 upfront to cover leads. The lead quality was extremely poor—most didn’t match my services at all. One lead even requested work that legally required permits, which would have put my license at risk if I accepted. When I refused, the client hung up, left me a negative review, and Thumbtack refused to remove either the review or the charge. I canceled my account quickly, but Thumbtack refused to refund the unused balance for services that were never delivered. In my opinion, this is a very unfair and unprofessional business practice.
Hi Liliana, we're sorry to read that the leads you were provided did not meet your expectations or match the targeting preferences you had set. It's important for our pros to get the most out of their money on Thumbtack and that is why we only charge for a perfect match lead.
If you were denied a refund, it is because the lead matched a certain setting within your account. If you're having trouble understanding this, please give our team a call at (866) 501-5809 so we can get things adjusted!

Be aware people, don't let your business being ruined by them. I have 2 kids and I'm the only provider. My biggest mistake was to build the reputation with them. They are protecting rude customers, charging for not responding customer (but calling it contact) and many more.. But this time they make me feel robbed and raped. What a terrible ppl and business. Removing account without telling the reason. Called them many times but barely heard customer service (probably located in India) because I couldn't hear almost anything she said except they can't do anything about it. They said I violated some of their rules when I did completely nothing..
Stay with Google people, don't build their brand, build own! They are acting like criminals, treating you as a criminal. I'm a single father of two, lost all my hard work proofs, happy customers and my reviews because some crazy rules they have? I did not do any changes to my account for 10 years and out of nothing I violated some rules...wow. They are very messy. They could even tell why.... How is this even possible? They completely not responsible with your trust and reputation. It's just such heartbreaking to be treated as this. These people are not humans or professionals! Stay away if you value your business and hard work.

Thumbtack and it's so called professionals are all scammers. Thumbtack does NOT verify any information provided to them by the people operating on their site. So called professionals are allowed to upload fraudulent documents of their business, insurance and credentials without any background checks by Thumbtack. I was recently scammed out of $16,000 by one of their users who provided false documents of license and insurance.
When I filed a complaint and submitted countless documentation for their Thumbtack Guarantee they said they could not make a decision because they received conflicting stories from myself and the "professional". Of course the scammer isn't going to just admit to lying and scamming. But once again they didn't require him to provide any information to support his lies or verify the legitimacy of his business or credentials. Thumbtack is in the business of supporting liars, criminals and thieves. Their site is designed to connect scammers with new victims. I will never use or recommend this site to anyone! Just don't do it.

I was able to hire a couple of good professionals from the Thumbtack app, but my account was deactivated with no warning or reason given. When I asked why, the support team told me my request would not be considered and didn't provide any reason. Also, beware of pros who use an automated reply to answer your request within one minute so that their company is listed higher on the algorithm. I found great pros by chatting with individuals who cared about doing the work over booking the work.

Thumbtack charged me multiple time. This was the worst experience I have ever had with an online platform. I created a Thumbtack account for the very first time on September 18, 2025, and immediately I was charged three separate times without my authorization: $213.35, another $213.35 (duplicate), and $227.62. In total, more than $650 was taken from my bank account without me ever receiving any SMS, any client details, or any leads. I never responded to or accepted anything.
When I contacted Thumbtack support, instead of helping me right away, they kept telling me to request refunds one by one, making the process confusing and slow. Even after providing screenshots of my bank account showing the charges, they avoided taking full responsibility. It is unacceptable to lose this amount of money for nothing. I did not authorize these charges, I did not benefit from any service, and I was left with a very bad impression of the company. No professional should have to go through this. If you are considering using Thumbtack, please be aware: they may charge you unexpectedly and you will have to fight hard to get your money back. Spent several days discussing work I needed done with a Thumbtack contractor, hired the contractor, set an appointment, spent all day waiting for the contractor, to be contacted after the appointment time for the contractor to cancel. After going back and read more of the contractor's reviews it appears this was common, but Thumbtack had the contractor rated as a 5-star contractor. They really need to fix their rating algorithm and develop a system for customers to file a complaint against a contractor. Hire someone locally and stay away from Thumbtack.

I tried calling the phone number thumbtack provided via the customer and it’s the wrong number. Filled out a refund request and thumbtack denied it. Out $53.42 no lead. Second lead I pay $191.32 for. It is supposed to be a full roof tear off and install around 1000 sq feet. I drive all the way out there and it’s a 200 sq foot gazebo. Refund pending but I have a feeling where this is going. Third lead I declined because of distance and repair type. Automatically charged $28 non-refundable. So 24 hours in spent almost $275 on what should be solid leads and got a gazebo lead. How can they say nothing is refundable? Or I keep appealing their decision to go nowhere and waste my time.

He also sent me an inflated estimate for $30,000 to repair the pipes. The toilet continued to leak in the ceiling, so, I hired a second plumber. The second plumber was more reasonable and fixed the leak and changed the pipes for much less. I received an email from Thumbtack accusing me of racial discrimination; their discrimination policy was attached to the email. I replied to the email, but they refused to tell me who made the accusations. The second plumber and I are the same race, so it couldn’t be him, it would have to be the first plumber. I’m mixed race and I don’t care what race someone is, I look for a reasonable price and a good quality of work.
I was treated unfairly by this company, they don’t have any text messages, or emails from me using any racial slurs. I have never been called a racist, nor have I ever called anyone a racial slur. Due to this poor experience, I closed my profile. However, after receiving repeated calls promising better opportunities, I decided to give it another try. In short, I reopened my account, but I didn't take any lead. On September 3rd, I noticed a charge on my account for a direct lead. I received no email or notification about this lead, and by the time I accessed the platform, the customer had already contacted four other companies. I had no realistic chance to compete for the job. I asked for a refund, but it was denied because of your policy. I find this unacceptable. As a professional photographer, I joined Thumbtack to connect with clients but instead ran into misrepresented leads and a refund process built to deny valid claims. Most recently, I was charged for a lead listed as an engagement photoshoot, but the client was actually looking for a wedding ceremony on a fixed date. The date was also blocked off on my Thumbtack calendar, and I even offered alternative dates. Thumbtack still denied the refund, calling the lead valid and the lead was open to different dates. Ridiculous.
This shows the bigger problem. Thumbtack charges immediately but does not ensure leads are accurate, fairly matched, or usable. When the lead is wrong, they hide behind technicalities. In this case, they claim the lead was flexible with their dates. That's an absurd claim that I, as a photographer, had an opportunity to convince the client to have their wedding on another date. If you are a professional thinking about Thumbtack, know that you will pay for leads whether or not they are accurate or bookable, and refunds are nearly impossible. Other platforms are more transparent and fair.

I advise everyone to take Thumbtack to court. They will lie and say they have real leads, but don't believe this foolishness. Thousands of people from different parts of the nation are all saying the same thing. They are so criminal, they refuse to register themselves with the BBB. We have a class action lawsuit in progress also. Basically, instead of thumbtack charging a pro only if they are hired, they will charge a pro even if a customer writes and say "Hello." That was a $50 hello with no reply afterwards. On top of that, it's common sense only one person can be hired, but they allow a "customer" to message up to five Pros in order for thumbtack to seek significant profit. They won't even allow us to put in our profile warning customers to not contact us if they do not actually intend on hiring us and informing them of thumbtack charging pro even if the customer doesn't intend on using us. Their algorithm will delete it.
My best option for everyone who reads this. Type it in your profile, screenshot it showing that you have. You will receive a email saying you violated their code of conduct and they will delete it, save that email, file a lawsuit in your local small claims court for Unfair and Deceptive Practices!! Utilize your experiences and false leads along with their acts in sensoring your ability to limit the wrongful charges, and the thousands of complaints on the BBB website as evidence. If they won't stop their criminal acts, utilize their wrongdoings against them. Check out the tik tok videos and they will help point you in the right direction for pursuing legal action against thumbtack. I know thumbtack is going to respond with some foolishness, and this is my response to you... save yourself the time and don't. Thumbtack Pro is a real world example on how to take an amazing app and service and just drop it in the toilet. When I first started using Thumbtack Pro in 2014 I paid reasonable amounts per lead. That was back when you only paid if you landed the job and in a time where lead prices were very reasonable. Now it costs $30 or more per lead just to be competitive and 9/10 times you don’t even get a response. The seldom times you do is a customer saying “Joe Blow down the street said he’d do it for $50, can you do that?” Well no I can’t because I just spent $60 on this lead.
In one month, my very competitive prices landed me zero jobs yet I paid over $500 to Thumbtack. I have since stopped using their app because all it was doing was draining my pockets. I get they got greedy and wanted more money and for the consumer side I rarely hear complaints, but it takes 2 to tango and draining the pockets of the ones that pay the money for the app isn’t the way to go. In an effort to make more money Thumbtack actually did the opposite and ruined several thousands livelihoods. Stop being greedy and take the app back to its roots where I’m sure it saw a lot more success.

I did not select most of the leads and figured out that this damn platform withdrew thousands of dollars from my credit card! I am so mad and this platform is bullshit. They are stealing your money as a professional. They charge you every time someone selects you for a job, regardless of whether you contacted the lead or not. That is robbery.
We apologize if our policies weren't clear to you at sign-up! Here at Thumbtack, pros only pay for the cost of leads—not after being hired for a job. Thumbtack Pro will rob you of your money. The lead system is not quality by any means. If you’re looking for quality leads do your own marketing and outreach. Thumbtack Pro is not the answer. After spending hundreds of dollars and really trying to get leads and talk to customers the ROI is way below standard. Thumbtack has no idea how to vet leads to actually make them make sense. You will waste your money. Please beware.
We want all of our pros to find success! That is why we make sure all leads on Thumbtack are verified. Do Not use this site, if you want your money taken without you knowing. I came back after about three years, and it was good then, now it has changed. Because someone contacted me, and I did not communicate with them, I was charged. When I spoke to someone in the chat to dispute this, she told me, I needed to modify my profile, but Thumbtack does not allow you to specify your services. So I called to speak to someone and he spoke to me in a condescending manner and as if I was a minor. When I mentioned this, he told me, "good day" and hung up. They are a scam, and they must be under a different management from three years ago.

I’ve spent hundreds of dollars weekly on Thumbtack leads and 90 percent of those leads ghost me but I still get charged a huge fee. Recently, a non-client ghosted me for 4 days after providing my prices (common on Thumbtack) then left a false retaliatory and malicious one-star review after I informed her the date she wanted was booked, despite no transaction ever occurring. Since she “ghosted” me I conducted my business as normal and booked the same date she wanted, but again she never responded to me after I sent my prices so like any business owner I allowed serious inquiries to book for that date.
I provided screenshots to Thumbtack support to provide tangible evidence regarding my concerns, but they refused to remove the clearly retaliatory review. They’re happy to take my money, but won’t defend me from malicious clients. Other platforms protect their pros when a review is provably false. Thumbtack does not. Overall, Thumbtack support has NOT supported their pros and they will not support their pros even when it’s warranted. If ever there was a way to NOT conduct business, this is it. The review was not valid and this particular situation warranted the company’s real support for once. There’s a reason they only have 1.6 star reviews people, wake up. Choose a platform that actually supports you.

Hi John, we recognize the frustration with this situation. However, as a pro on Thumbtack, you are charged for leads and not once you are hired for a job. They create fake leads using bots to scam contractors out of overpriced lead fees and offer no real customer service. 75% of the fake bot clients never even respond after posting job requests, and the other 25% intentionally post in the wrong category. I have actually interviewed so called “clients” who do not respond by finding their addresses through a web search and asking them to call me. Guess what? Over half say they NEVER EVEN POSTED ON THUMBTACK TO BEGIN WITH.

Dear Thumbtack Team, Field of Work: Home Theater Installation, ART Installation, TV mounting. I am writing to express my deep frustration with the current state of your lead generation model. After more than five years as a loyal service provider on your platform, I’ve watched Thumbtack’s practices shift from collaborative to exploitative, and it’s now reaching a breaking point.
Here’s why: Exorbitant, Unjustifiable Costs: Charging $22+ per lead (and rising) while sending the same lead to 4–5 vendors means Thumbtack pockets $90–$110+ per customer request. This is corporate greed at its worst. You’re profiting astronomically while forcing providers to compete in a rigged system. Diluted Value for Providers: When 4–5 vendors pay for the same lead, our chances of securing work plummet. We’re essentially funding a lottery where Thumbtack always wins, and providers lose time, money, and morale. The lack of exclusivity or priority for long-term partners like myself is insulting. Declining ROI and Sustainability: My cost to acquire jobs through Thumbtack now outweighs the revenue from those jobs. What’s the incentive to stay? The “opportunity” to bleed money?
No Reward for Loyalty: Despite years of dedication and fees paid, there’s no advantage for providers who’ve helped build this platform. Instead, policies increasingly favor Thumbtack’s profit margins over the survival of small businesses that rely on you. Quality vs. Quantity Overload: Flooding customers with 5+ quotes diminishes the perceived value of our services. It pressures providers to undercut prices, degrading service quality and customer trust in Thumbtack itself. This model is unsustainable. If Thumbtack continues prioritizing short-term profits over the viability of its providers, you’ll drive away the very partners who make your platform functional.
I urge you to: Cap the number of vendors per lead (e.g., 2–3 max) to improve conversion rates. Offer loyalty tiers or discounts for long-term providers. Provide transparency into how lead costs are calculated. After five years, I want to stay—but not under these conditions. If meaningful changes aren’t made soon, I’ll have no choice but to redirect my resources to platforms that value fairness over greed. This isn’t just feedback; it’s a plea for survival. I hope Thumbtack listens before it’s too late.
We appreciate your detailed feedback and for trusting Thumbtack for over five years. We understand your concerns about lead costs, competition, and ROI, and we take them seriously. Our goal is to connect pros and customers in a fair, sustainable way. We’re exploring improvements to lead distribution, pricing transparency, and loyalty rewards. Title: Ongoing Issues with Lead Relevance, Billing Practices, and Lack of Support. As a long-time professional user of Thumbtack, I feel compelled to share my growing concerns with their current business practices. While the platform initially provided some value in connecting service providers with potential clients, it has become increasingly frustrating and financially burdensome due to ongoing issues that remain unresolved.
Despite setting very specific preferences for the types of leads I’m willing to accept—such as event type, services offered, and budget range—I continue to be charged for inquiries that fall completely outside of those parameters. These include requests for services I explicitly do not offer, as well as multi-day or out-of-scope projects that do not align with my availability, pricing, or listed capabilities.
This is not only a breach of reasonable business expectations but raises concerns about the integrity of the matching system. It creates a financial disadvantage for professionals who rely on Thumbtack to deliver qualified leads within their chosen criteria. Being charged for leads that contradict one’s set preferences can be reasonably interpreted as a form of misrepresentation under standard commercial practices.
Additionally, the lack of access to a transparent and effective dispute resolution process has made matters worse. It is now nearly impossible to speak directly with anyone in the Disputes Department or escalate issues to a supervisor. The automated responses fail to address the core concerns, and the appeals process lacks accountability and fairness.
As a professional who invests significantly in Thumbtack every week, I would expect a higher level of customer service, accountability, and respect. At the very least, there should be a consistent method for addressing lead mismatches, especially when the platform’s own filters are not being honored. While I remain hopeful that Thumbtack will reevaluate its policies and restore the quality of service it once provided, I caution other service providers to carefully consider the financial and operational implications before committing to their Pro Services platform.
Thank you for sharing this feedback, Shaleigha. We understand how frustrating mismatched leads and costs can be. Our goal is to charge only for leads matching your targeting settings. If that hasn’t been your experience, please call us at (866) 501-5809 so we can review your account and help. I am charged for direct leads that I have declined to do as the work does not align with my scope of work nor would it financially make it worth me taking the time to do the work. I have called up on leads right after I received one only to learn that another person was hired a day or two prior to me getting the lead. I have tried to be patient with thumbtack. I have spoken to them several times about the issue and have had very little luck in getting any matter resolved.
On July 21st I spoke with their customer service department and was told there was nothing that can be done. After that conversation I told them to please delete my account and was told no by the agent that I would have to send in a request in writing for them to review on whether I can delete my account in the mean time I am still getting leads sent to me that are not in my scope of work and I am getting direct leads of which I have declined and am still getting charged for.
I would recommend to serious experienced and qualified contractors and handyman invest your money can n another plat form. Leave this site to those who are just looking to pay their bills, by a six pack of beer or a bag of dope. Find a site where you can truly make a good living. Your reviews and financial rewards will be far better. Do not battle with cheap labor go to a site where you can do things right and be proud of your self at the end of the day.

Thumbtack has consistently overcharged for leads—many of which are either drastically misrepresented or not serious. It’s also frustrating that the same lead is sold to multiple pros, which undermines the value of paying for it. The cost-to-value ratio simply isn’t fair, and it feels like Thumbtack prioritizes profit over building strong, reliable relationships with the professionals who keep the platform running. Support is limited, and deceptive or inflated leads seem to go unchecked.
Thank you for sharing your concerns. We understand how frustrating this can feel and value your partnership. You’re only charged when a customer reaches out based on your set preferences, which you can update anytime. While we can’t guarantee every lead will turn into a job, our goal is to provide quality connections and fair pricing. As a professional using Thumbtack to grow my business, I’ve found the platform to be incredibly unfair. I’ve been charged over $100 for two leads simply because the customer “selected my company directly”—yet neither responded at all. These types of charges are automatic and non-refundable, even when there’s zero interaction. Worse, I’ve received leads completely outside my job preferences or with incomplete/inaccurate information, yet I'm still billed $50+ for them. It feels like a system designed to generate revenue for Thumbtack, not to actually help small businesses succeed. If you're a small business owner trying to build your reputation and get real leads, I do not recommend Thumbtack. There are much more transparent and cost-effective platforms out there. You're better off investing your money in Google Ads or local marketing strategies where you have more control and accountability.

-Star Review: "Terrible Experience – Feels Like a Scam." I strongly advise staying away from Thumbtack. I signed up hoping to find quality leads for my business, but all I got were fake or completely unresponsive ones. They charge you for every lead, even when the customer never replies or clearly isn't serious. It's basically paying for nothing.
When I reached out to customer service, I got copy-paste answers and zero help. I even tried disputing a few obviously bogus leads, but they refused any refund. They’re quick to take your money but don’t offer any real support or protection for pros. If you’re a small business owner trying to grow, this platform will just drain your wallet. Feels like they’re more focused on making money off the pros than actually helping us get work. Avoid at all costs.

Not licensed, not bonded, and have been fired from several local places as plumbers helpers did not do the jobs as requested. They are not legally allowed to represent themselves as plumbers. They damaged our otherwise meticulous garage, and improperly installed a water heater. I have had 2 licensed plumbers inspect their work and each called the result extremely poorly done, laughably bad.
The water heater was also not as requested. They did not follow through with sending a receipt, they are not answering phone calls, and making no attempts to remedy the solution. I have filed a complaint with our state L and I department, which is in the process of fining them. That however does not result in getting my funds back and funding a real plumber to correct their terribly bad work. Thumbtack is making millions by allowing people to misrepresent their credentials and Thumbtack makes no efforts to keep fraudulent people from using that company to defraud people. After the L and I issues are done I will be filing a lawsuit.

All was completed correctly except the mirror he hung in the formal dining room. When we called back to get it corrected, we were given a date a few days later and told we would be charged an additional $50.00 which we agreed too even though we had paid the $400.00 invoice in full. I signed up for Thumbtack to connect with a single professional — ONE message sent — and within minutes, my phone exploded with texts and calls from random service providers I never contacted. These weren’t just spam calls. Every one of them had my full message, my name, and my phone number, all directly included in an email from Thumbtack.
Here’s the kicker: These emails funneled the pros into an external dashboard that "isn’t technically Thumbtack," but was clearly connected — and that’s where my private info was displayed. This is how they skirt the issue: Thumbtack claims they don’t sell your information, but in practice, they’re handing it off to a third-party network where your data is treated like a product. When I contacted support, they flat-out gaslit me, saying it must have been the individual pro I messaged. But that pro didn’t even have my number yet — she asked for it way later. It is 100% clear that Thumbtack leaked, shared, or sold my data immediately after I hit “Send.”
I am LIVID. I trusted a legitimate-looking platform with my personal contact info, and now I’m being harassed constantly. Their privacy policy STATEs that they will not give out your information - but THEY DO. Just a total violation of privacy. Screenshots attached are from a random person that reached out - they showed me the email Thumbtack sent them (Which has the PRIVATE message I sent the first pro) -- and then the second screenshot is of them telling me that my info is available for anyone to use because again, THUMBTACK SOLD IT. This is a shabby, petty little outfit. We used Thumbtack because of their guarantees that if a contractor damages your home, they will cover the damages "up to $100,000." Be aware that this is total nonsense, Thumbtack will not honor any of their guarantees, even though they are obligated to by law. We hired a contractor from Thumbtack and he damaged our floor. We immediately documented the damages and submitted to Thumbtack, following all of the steps in their process. They ignored our communications via email and by online messaging (there is no way to call them of course). They intentionally ignored everything, which is obviously their default practice.
We sued them in small claims court and won. A thumbtack representative even showed up in court, virtually, and tried to argue that they are just a "yellow-pages" type organization with no liability for any damages done by their contractors. Obviously this is not true, their coverage responsibilities are detailed in the contract they sign with all customers. We won and Thumbtack was forced to pay us damages. Where do I even begin with Thumbtack's disastrous attempt to mount my TV? The whole experience felt like a poorly executed comedy of errors, except I'm not laughing. The initial technician seemed more interested in commiserating with another unfortunate soul on the phone about their botched job than focusing on mine. Surprise, surprise, my TV was left hanging at a jaunty, decidedly not level angle.
When I requested a different technician to rectify the situation, the battle began. Thumbtack actually argued with me, insisting on sending the same person who clearly lacked the necessary skills the first time! After some frustrating back-and-forth, they finally relented and sent someone new. Hope flickered briefly, only to be extinguished when the second technician also failed to mount the TV correctly. At this point, beyond exasperated, I requested a refund for the utterly useless service. Their response? A flat-out refusal.

We understand how vital every dollar is to a small business owner, and we regret the frustration regarding your lead charges. Our platform is designed to connect pros with genuine customers looking for local services, with fees driven by your chosen targeting settings. While we have strict criteria aligned with these settings, we always want to ensure fairness. Thank you for sharing your perspective, as your feedback helps us continuously evaluate and improve our system transparency.

I have used Thumbtack twice to move, and both times I was incredibly disappointed; I should have learned after the first use. First guy moved me from California to Illinois and he went through my things and stole some of my furniture. Smaller items, like the last gift I ever got from a family member before she passed, was also missing. Upon delivery, when I noticed a few items were missing, he said they didn't fit in the van (?) and that he had shipped them as a courteous gesture. They never arrived and I repetitively contacted him to get shipping info and thumbtack to get a refund or compensation, to which he blocked me and harassed me on social media, and thumbtack didn't help whatsoever after months of seeking help.
Second time around was a small move, and I caught one of three movers SLEEPING IN THE VAN DURING THE MOVE. They overcharged me an entire hour on my final bill so I didn't tip, and they forgot to give me a 10% discount they promised upon booking, and I forgot to ask for it. An hour after I paid and requested the 10% discount back or to be made as a tip for the two people who actually helped move me, they blocked me and removed their company on Thumbtack.
We take safety very seriously, and we're truly concerned to hear about your moving services experience. We know how stressful missing items can be. We strongly encourage you to submit an official report at https://help.thumbtack.com/report-a-concern. This allows our dedicated Trust & Safety team to investigate the matter thoroughly and work toward a swift resolution.

To dispute a charge you cannot talk to an individual. It has to be email or supposed live chat. They have a so-called refund/billing team that reviews disputed charges. I highly recommend you contact your bank or financial institution as soon as a disputed charge appears on your statement. Stay away from Thumbtack.
We know how important every dollar is for pros providing local services to customers, and we apologize for the frustrating experience with your lead charges. You can request a review for a refund here: https://help.thumbtack.com/article/how-to-request-a-refund. Utilizing this established path allows us to review and take action on your refund request as soon as possible.
