I simply requested a Solar Equipment review for a possible malfunction, which warranty company would work with a legal Arizona Solar Business and I pay labor costs. Easy I would give an estimate to the well known warranty company, they would approve deliver necessary equipment and I would pay the labor costs. Instead Thumbtack referred a criminal who did unauthorized and never requested Electrical work because it was an emergency fire risk that I was in danger since I am Federally Recognized Medical Homebound Disabled person. He said he was Solar but also a licensed Arizona Electrician since he did the work to save my life I owed $390.00. Not what I expected but I thought Thumbtack recommended Pro. I paid not expecting Thumbtack to sell my private information to a criminal.
I have been communicating in writing with Thumbtack since 6.18.2023 proof that the company is not a legal solar company or electrical company, written proof of the Thumbtack Pro utilizing the Thumbtack Platform to perform fraud on me and professional Legal Arizona Electrician who I am willing pay the Legal Electrician not me, $1,500 repairs of unauthorized electrical damages.
Thumbtack Support in writing acknowledge and stated validated my complaint as true no disagreement there. Thumbtack.com Support written statement is Thumbtack.com is a neutral party, Though they haven't provided documentation and I can't find any public information, IK was responsible for determining if a Thumbtack recommended Professional business was really a Professional Business or a criminal.
Thumbtack.com written statement was the criminal would give me the $390.00 refund if I signed legal waivers provided by the criminal releasing him from any financial responsibility of his criminal damages to my property because he, the unqualified illegal electrician, had decided that the qualified legal electrician was in error not him and Thumbtack has no control of illegal activity on Thumbtack.com Platform, I can't find and haven't been provided documentation I was responsible to monitor illegal activity on Thumbtack.com Platform.
Thumbtack.com acknowledged and didn't disagree illegal activity being performed by a Thumbtack Pro on Thumbtack.com Platform. 8/10/2023 Thumbtack.com is still profiting selling the criminal leads for his illegal company, the criminal has my $390.00 and according to his Thumbtack.com website page not only is still fraudulent advertising but did a 20,000.00 illegal solar job for a Thumbtack.com customer who I hope doesn't have any issues because he has no construction license or construction insurance as required by Arizona Public Law for any building modifications over $1,000.00.
Glad the criminals Thumbtack and the illegal business Mesh Bros Enterprises are still profiting where I, the Thumbtack Customer have to still have my solar equipment reviewed, my original request, but I was provided financial responsibility of $1,500.00 to pay for illegal activity by Mesh Bros Enterprises. I did not receive services requested and my home was damaged $2,000.00 by criminal activity because IK used Thumbtack.com as opposed to other referral companies where I wasn't unknowingly put in a situation of a criminal approaching me.
I, Marie **, publicly swear this is my true experience and all documentation has been submitted to Arizona Attorney Generals' Office to review my claim of Thumbtack.com Fraudulent Advertising. Thumbtack.com did not inform me prior to my legal agreement with Thumbtack.com. I was giving Thumbtack.com permission to sell my private information to a known criminal. The illegal solar company did not find publicly. I wanted a free estimate for possible solar equipment failure, Mesh Bros Enterprises were only aware of me because I agreed for Thumbtack to sell that private information to Thumbtack.com's Private Professional Network.

I hired a pool service "professional" through Thumbtack and it turns out I shouldn't have wasted my money. A local teenager with some YouTube instructional videos would have cost me less and done work of the same quality. This pro would tell me completely inaccurate things about the pool operation and plumbing, add chemicals willy nilly without reading the directions, and then finally installed a new filter completely backwards (i.e. intake hooked up to return). I spent literally thousands of dollars trying to get my pool under control with this guy before finally suspecting I was being taken advantage of. I've had no luck getting my money back through Thumbtack despite their supposed guarantee. Truly appalling customer service.

Thumbtack was co-founded by Marco Zappacosta, who is the current CEO. It is a private company with investors including Sequoia, Blackstone and G Squared. All them stated above are in cahoots to run a deceptive business geared at robbing Pros of their money. They have no care whatsoever for their unethical business practices. They create FAKE leads to steal Pros money. I’m joining the lawsuit against them. I want my money back. How can these people be allowed to continue to do this without any form of repercussions. I was screwed out of a down payment from a contractor I hired through Thumbtack. I filed a complaint through Thumbtack and got no satisfaction from them. In fact, I never heard anything from them at all. The contractors are apparently in good standing with Thumbtack if they pass a background check. There is no requirement to treat the clients fairly. I would expect Thumbtack to act on the client's behalf since they, in effect, are vouching for contractors that come up on their platform. Alas, Thumbtack apparently doesn't care.

He (it's one guy running this scam) charged my unauthorized cards repeatedly, won't let me delete my info off their site or deactivate my account. The "customers" will pretend to be interested and ghost you - I think the way it works is they get a cut of the lead cost, which has skyrocketed in price, and keep businesses coming back thinking they are getting real leads when they are total actors and scammers. Continuing to charge me even after me repeatedly trying to delete my account and contacting them. Had to close my credit cards to prevent more charges - he's running the charges manually too! The Web Design Company stole $1,197 from me, even after I requested a full refund early on and they told me they would process my refund. In the end more money was taken, and I was never given what I originally asked for and as they have advertised. I actually have nothing to show for the funds stolen, they are keeping my funds hostage and have no intentions on refunding any funds.
Their website is false advertising, and this is a form a embezzlement and a violation of consumer protection laws. If no legal action is in place for these types of people, what are options left? Thumbtack is clueless on what the issue is and think I hired a professional to renovate my home. I don't have a home issue. It is a web design service issue that Thumbtack represents on their site. Whoever Thumbtack ALLEGEDLY does background checks on ARE NOT the people who do the house cleaning or the owners of the companies they represent or the people you message and/or speak to. Most of the housekeepers are NOT authorized to work in the United States, most do not have insurance, most are inexperienced, most do not understand or speak English, most all unreliable with zero accountability. Many of these 'alleged' housekeeping companies display 5-star ratings, list their companies as "top pros" with verified reviews -- most of which are lies. One LEGITIMATE investigation into Thumbtack posted reviews -- all which were fraudulent - but Thumbtack put them up anyway. Consumers beware.

Despite sending numerous photos and emails! They are allowing this inept contractor to continue to remain under their banner. This contractor pocketed most of the money I gave him and used cheap and used material to finish my project in some of the places. I had major work done Roof, Remodeled Porch and papers on the walkway and a gravel walkway. On the porch instead of getting NEW IRON BANNISTERS that I showed them in Lowe's, they found an old rusted Bannister and painted it over with black paint. The rust is coming through and rust is on the steps and new papers. THEY painted over unscraped paint.
The PVC IS BUCKLING. The soffit on the roof is falling off. They didn't fix the roof edge just painted over it. The concrete porch is chipping all over. They didn't even bother to use concrete paint. They tried 2 do a ***0000$ job for 11000$. This what another contractor who I contacted to give me an estimate for repairs. Instead of hauling away the trash from the remodeled porch they stuck all the trash underneath the porch creating a new home for the community rodents. HORRIFIC. Now, they just take advantage of the pros, they do not care about them, and only care about taking their money. In the last year (just one year!!!) leads for writing and editing services have gone from $15-$21 to $37-$45 — for editing projects, which usually are $125-$175, unless you get a full manuscript, which doesn't happen every day. I went from spending $300 in leads per month, to $900 AND I'M MAKING MUCH LESS MONEY!!!! THEY'VE GONE THE ROUTE OF BIG BUSINESS — SCREW THEIR CLIENTS (in this case the pros). I wouldn't recommend Thumbtack to my worst enemy. They use FixTman, and they are horrible and unprofessional. Had we known they were going to send "techs" that had absolutely no idea what they were doing, my husband and I would have done this job ourselves. By no means are these professional contractors. I have never seen "techs" look at instructions so confused before. They also came unprepared for themselves, practically begging for water anytime we checked on them. Any professional contractor comes prepared for themselves and don't ask anything of the client. I am pretty sure they just hire anyone that can pass a background check.
It's 3 days into the job, and they have left our Gazebo damaged, unsafe, and incomplete. Now they're saying they can't finish the job. They also didn't use any silicone during the job. It's missing part of the roof. Only 2 anchors used on each foot while 3 holes were drilled. Anchors are loose and not secured to the concrete. This is unacceptable, unsafe, dangerous, and not up to code. Customer service has been anything but that, and have done nothing to make things right. We can't get anywhere with them. This Gazebo was gift to us for our first home.
Now, we're stuck with finishing up the job because FixTman clearly has no understanding of what a job done right looks like. Not to mention were stuck with the damage that the techs made. Save yourself the money and time. FixTman is a scam, and they will leave you high and dry. They are not to be trusted. Do not give them a dime of your hard earned money because they will not work hard for you.

They would not let me do it and the specialist was yelling at me on the phone. We got into a screaming match with one another and the guy just would not budge. Their policy is to never let reviews get updated or deleted. I believe the reason they do this is to have more reviews altogether on the site for its ratings. It doesn’t matter to them that the perception of the reviews will hurt people or businesses.

The Bad: The problem I'm encountering is that while a company has to verify the account, they don't seem to verify their license. I've met with several people from Thumbtack that said they were licensed but when I asked for the number they admitted they didn't have one. That's super annoying and a waste of my time. I am an electrical contractor Pro with over 20 years of experience, licensed, insured and offer warranteis to my customers. You would think Thumbtack tries their best to keep contractors like me?
1. I clearly stated in my preferences that I don't install security cameras. After a customer requested security camera installation, I declined and asked thumbtack for a refund.. Thumbtack declined my refund request because the customer stated that it is a "wiring installation" and that it fell within my preferences. I then told thumbtack that the customers are clueless or accidentally click on the wrong box at times. If a customer reaches out to a plumber and states he needs a switch installed, the plumber still gets charged for that lead and Thumbtack declines a refund to the plumber.
2. Thumbtack structure for the contractor is set up like an auction. Contractors are auctioned off! It trains customers to look for the lowest dollar contractor. Most of them request/demand free quotes to 5+ contractors where each one pays for the lead. As a contractor pro, you show up in a long list with your competitors where the customer can click a button on all of them requesting free quote. Imagine each click is $60 and customer clicks on 6 contractors in less than a minute. That's $360 to Thumbtack for a job that doesn't even cost that much to do!
3. Thumbtack is UNDERSTAFFED! One week I called 3 times, and waited 1 hour each. Still nobody picks up. They hire aggressive american sales people that call you every day until you sign up. But when you need general assistance, you have to wait for 6 hours on hold and eventually 4 days later someone from India picks up. Their calls are outsourced while they they charge so much for the leads.
4. As an experienced electrical contractor, I can tell you that their fees are not worth the leads, even if you draw the line at the end of the month. they are no different than Angie's list or Home Advisor. Thumbtack is actually following their model. Real contractors do not stay with Thumbtack. It looks like they don't care if contractors are upset, for as long as they can collect fees from them for a short while, they are happy. Archaic Software/ Incompetent Support/Overpriced, Poor Quality Leads. As a Thumbtack PRO (versus customer) I have found the software application to be quite dated with limited features, functionality, and system enhancements over the term of my use. The helpdesk is ineffective, often not knowing how the software works themselves, or just making up contradictory support so they can close a ticket. The price per lead continues to rise, while number and quality of leads decline. Their policy to reimburse unresponsive leads (did not read PROs response, did not answer phone or text messages) is not honored. I have been a Thumbtack PRO for 5+ years. I am at my wits end. It never ceases to amaze me - the gap between company valuation, founder adoration, and the reality of actual, effective business operations.

We have had a significant negative ROI through using Thumbtack (we're a top pro). We're paying a minimum of $20 a lead - each of which is sent to a minimum of 4 other professionals. Even for $60 leads they'll send them around as much as they can so that they can grab as much money as possible from contractors. Most never respond or "someone already came to remove it" within 1 minute of them posting it. Takes 30 minutes+ to get ahold of them over the phone, and support won't refund you. Stay far away from this greedy business.

This advertising site, shouldn't be allowed to exist. They advertise scammers, thieves, thugs, high robbery contractors, most of the contractors have no state or federal license, no certifications, no idea of how to do things right. This site is great for scammers to take advantage of seniors, and people that don't know better. Thumbtack should make sure the contractors they advertise on their platform are background checked, have state license and are insured contractors, legit small businesses, in good standing with the state and local agencies. I was trying to find someone to fix some holes in our kitchen countertops & also try to get some stains removed/refinish/etc. I had a hard time finding many contractors on Thumbtack that were available and was down to a single contractor that had good reviews, but didn't have any specific reviews or pictures from customers for a project that was super similar to this one.
Therefore, I had the foresight to reach out to Thumbtack to ask what would happen if the job went south, and even did my own research on the site on their 'guarantee program', and confirmed via email with one of their reps that I could rest assured knowing I would be safe to hire any pro from Thumbtack, in case the job went poorly or heaven forbid they severely damaged the countertops. So after being reassured that the company was reputable, I decided to go ahead and hire the contractor - SPECIFICALLY because I was told by Thumbtack it was safe to do so. TOO BAD THAT WAS A BOLD-FACED LIE!!
The contractor did in fact destroy the countertops! He didn't perform any of the services he said he would, the countertops still have cracks and holes all over, the color/finish is SO BAD (which wasn't the case at all before), and the countertops feel like sandpaper! Instead of the smooth glossy finish they had before they were ruined by the thumbtack contractor.
So I naturally tried keeping my calm and reaching out to Thumbtack. I spoke with a friendly rep who (yet again!) assured me they could and would help remedy the awful situation. I sent tons of pics/videos of the before/after countertops. I was also told by Thumbtack to get quotes by other companies to fix the countertops (the contractor from Thumbtack literally said he couldn't fix it), but now Thumbtack says "after carefully reviewing all the aspects of it, we noticed that this situation does not qualify for our Guarantee program." Thumbtack IS AN ABSOLUTE SCAM. The "Pros" are nothing of the sort. DO NOT USE, YOU WILL REGRET EVERYTHING!!!

Our company began with Thumbtack just about when they started. Back then they were the best thing since the old saying "Sliced Bread". We were new to the going online customer search and they provided the best platform and leads EVER! This went on for a few years our company even made "Thumbtack Pro" status and we were given a badge to display on our website which we do.
Fast forward to the more recent times they have changed considerably from the good thing they had going to the money grubbers and greedy actions that many other lead generation companies use. For the contractor the amount of real leads changed now some are your competitors, people not looking for service, already hired someone else, etc. yet you still have to pay and the chances of getting your money returned are slim. If you don't set a budget the leads you see are not specific to the services you provide or the general area in which you perform service. Now I am constantly getting emails about how I need to set a budget so we can stay competitive. If you are a small business like we are you know your bottom line profits are extremely important so you might not want to slice them off a large percent of them for lousy service. Think about it.

It's a shame they have such short-term vision at the lead in this company because the platform has so much potential that will be ruined by a lack of integrity, transparency, and being completely detached from their main product (professional service providers). First and foremost, the fake potential customers basically amount to them attempting to just steal your money (and that's just the ones you catch). Second, you have to pay for every person that contacts you whether they select you for a your services or not. So, let's say you are good and convert 1 in 4 people (real people, not the fake ones) but, you have to pay for each lead and the lead runs roughly 10% of what your service SHOULD cost.
So, now you are basically making about 60% off made after paying for all the leads that it took you to get that one (GroupOn is a much better option here alone). Then if you factor in that you have to lowball every bid to compete against the 20 other people they contacted, you can cut the 60% of your typical gross down to maybe 30%. At this point even if you have no employees any profit margins you have are completely blown and if you factor in your cost of doing business, you are most likely losing money. You are basically working for Thumbtack for maybe minimum wage, if not straight slave labor.
Do yourself a favor and just don't. It's not worth it. These people will scam you. They will steal your money. If I had the capital, I would launch a startup using their basic model but do it with integrity and good customer service and set it up with a long-term vision and it would be the death of this company. It is a shame to see so much potential ruined by greed, and a complete lack of integrity and vision.
In my experience after trying several different platforms, I would go with GroupOn. GroupOn has its drawbacks too but overall it's worth it. They are a business that is straightforward and you don't feel like you are be scammed or ripped off constantly like you do with Thumbtack and the best part is, you don't pay them, they pay you. SO, it's in their best interest to get you real customers instead of having fake ones hit your account to generate more revenue (like Thumbtack does). Because with GroupOn, they don't get paid unless you get paid. Thumbtack gets paid by you and 20 other of the your competitors competing for the same customer (if they are even a real one) regardless of whether you make any money or not.

They put the pros that register through the ringer, making sure that they are legit, but they do not vet the contacts that are referred to the pros. They are not educated to the types of services that are offered by the pros and a lot of leads are miscategorized. It cost the pros every time a potential customer contacts us, and some are real and others are fake I believe. Out of the number of direct leads that come to me 1 in 10 are legit. The others are fake or something else. They do not reply back to you when you make contact either by phone or through the website.
Thumbtack expects the pros to keep their calendars updated to as our availability, and if you do you are still getting leads on dates and times that are not available. I am an independent contractor who has provided services for many small business like sales and marketing to name a few and also own a small business. In the summer I opened and verified my brands page on Thumbtack (JW Marketing Agency) however did not attempt to use until recently because I didn't have enough funding so I was getting jobs through other platforms. On November, 28, 2022 I decided to turn my targeting on and added my Capital One card, and they automatically deducted $195.00 from my card, when I went in to check I couldn't access my account because they deactivated it instantly. So they stole $195.00 then lock me out. Therefore, I didn't benefit from the $195.00 they took because they locked me out and don't even know what lead they got or for what.
This is the first issue!! Then prior to my issue, I pitched Thumbtack to a client for construction leads (Caleb Renovation Corp) and got 2 accounts deactivated instantly. I spoke to the account manager who was supposed to help me with setting up everything and explained how 3 accounts one under my name and social and the other one under my clients gets deactivated.
He made me aware that my phones and computers are linked to a previous account which I guess after I quit that company became delinquent (Wondecor, LLC). My biggest issue is how can their systems link my phones and devices to this company which I resigned from September 2021 and have nothing to do with their issues since I am not an owner of that company I was simply helping them out for a couple of months and their systems can't track that I had no involvement since September 2021. I am not sure when that account became delinquent but definitely know it happened after I quit. Therefore, their investigation should be more thorough.
Second big issue is that how deep does their background check go, because apparently this former employee is on Thumbtack with verified account, which his wife verified and most likely opened from her phone. Wouldn't your spouse come up in a background check? I was a former employee which my W2, resignation letter could prove. I am appalled I am being punished by Thumbtack while the people who committed the act are under another name benefiting from their services. I want my money back and I will go through great lengths to get this fixed because it is unfair to me and the clients I currently service.

I have used Thumbtack for my business since 2016. I found the platform to be very helpful in building my business and now have 145 reviews left from 178 hires. All of my reviews are 5 Stars. Nothing below that. I was also pleased to be the only provider of service in my area when I first started. It wasn’t long before other professionals signed on to Thumbtack. I really wasn’t concerned with this at first, but I then noticed that some of these folks were claiming territory which would require them to drive 2-3 hours (one way) to do a job! It’s certainly understandable that such people will attract more business because they are willing to travel so many miles. My problem here is that Thumbtack does not take local businesses into consideration when ranking their pros. I currently have three profiles listed above mine who live more than 100 miles away from the area. I would think local business would be a priority.
Thumbtack does give professionals the opportunity to state their credentials. One of my competitors (always listed first) had one year of experience and does not give any credentials! Due to his lack of experience, he charges a much cheaper rate and claims territory as far away as 160 miles! It’s quite clear that anyone who is looking for a service will be attracted to a cheap rate. His reviews are pretty good, but less than 50 percent of his hires take the time to leave a review. Thumbtack does give some pros the opportunity to include their license/certification. That option is not available in my field, so I had to go to great lengths to list all my certifications and credentials. My rate is higher than some, but it falls within the average of any pro who appears on the list. I only mention this here because there are customers who will actually dig deep to find out just how qualified a pro is before hiring them.
Here’s the most important part. Thumbtack had a badge it gives to pros who meet certain criteria called “Top Pro”. That badge appears at the top of your profile page. It gives the clear impression that a professional upholds the highest standards. It is also obvious that a customer will see this as a positive when considering who to hire. Thumbtack made changes to their Top Pro criteria earlier this year which has now resulted in the removal of my badge after having that credential for over two years. I had a steady flow of leads before the change was made. I have not had a single lead in three months because of their change with Top Pro.
I have written countless emails and spent hours on the phone with them over their unfair way of ranking professionals. I have more than met the criteria for having a better ranking. The reps I have spoken with over the years have all agreed with me and assured that they would “pass this information along”, but nothing is ever resolved. While I don’t expect any more leads from them, I do plan to keep my account active. Customers in my area who use Google will still see my stellar profile, so that’s a good thing. Please use caution if you are considering using Thumbtack. It’s a good thing if you are willing to offer a low rate for your service. It’s not a good idea for those professionals who maintain a successful business, but are unable to include your license/certification due to a platform that does not recognize your field of work.

Do not use this site. I learned the hard way that any old company or person can sign up to be on Thumbtack. There is no real vetting. After my experience, I'm starting to think this site is a total scam. I had an issue where I posted a review for Company A, but it was actually Company B that came to my house. Because my partner and I both were working to find a contractor, there was some confusion and I left a review for the wrong company. Whoops. Easy to fix? Wrong. I could not delete or edit my own review. Really? That's certainly inconvenient. So I emailed them with the error.
I've dealt with two customer service reps (one supervisor named Jeff) that have told me that due to their "integrity" they cannot remove the review. As I said to them, what kind of integrity is it to leave up a review for a company it doesn't belong to? This is false and untrue and should certainly be removed. My review is up there in error, hurting the wrong party that it is attached to, yet Thumbtack will not intervene and make it right. How awful is that? This is Thumbtack's definition of "integrity," apparently.
After doing more homework, I realize the Pros pay so much money for leads (just your clicking to connect with them charges them), which it translates into higher prices for the customer. Showed him the evidence in a photo. Offered to pay $120 vs $240 for a half of a job. He refused. I have tried to find a way to contact Thumbtack customer service. Apparently doesn't exist. When I was able to respond to a "lead", I wouldn't get a reply back from them. Makes me think that these aren't real people. When you ask for a refund, your credit card is not credited. They give you a credit on your account, which does me no good if I am not getting legit leads that fit my preferences. I'm done. What a waste of my time and money.

Thumbtack Professional repaired some broken tiles on the back deck/pool deck of my home. The outdoor tile is discontinued so I had to try to salvage the damaged areas. While the tile appears to be repaired correctly. The grout does not match the existing grout. It was left the raw grey vs terracotta like the rest of the deck. I did not notice it until he left. I contacted the owner to discuss it. I found out the worker charged me $900 but told the owner he charged me $600. He did a terrible job and stole $300 from me on top of the sub-standard Job. The owner said that he would do something about this. So far nothing.
Thumbtack customer service got involved. They ask for documentation to support the claim. I supplied the payment support and texts from the Garry Pavers. After 2 weeks of research they decided that they would not honor the money back guarantee. Just marketing smoke and mirrors. If something goes wrong, don't expect them to do anything to resolve it. I have been a Thumbtack Pro with this organization for several years. I recently had a young lady who booked limousine service with my company for a July wedding. During the month of May she emailed me on the THUMBTACK platform and states she was canceling the wedding and she could not go through with it. I immediately attempted on several different occasions to reach out to her to find out what was going on and never received a phone call back.
The next thing I find is a "1" star review with her stating that my company took her money and did not show up for her wedding. I immediately disputed it with Thumbtack and of course you cannot get someone live on the phone unless you're paying for that service. But I was told that the review stands because it was her personal opinion on her dealings with my company and that she did not violate any of THUMBTACK'S policies. Although they saw the proof in black and white on their very own platform. This young lady bought herself a lawsuit and if you're a business owner thinking of doing business with Thumbtack, they were excellent when I first started with them, but in MY OPINION nothing more than a total scam and rip off at this point. Spend your hard earned marketing dollars elsewhere. I am having tremendous success with Google Ads.

I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau regarding this issue and I rejected Thumbtack's response because: It is a non-responsive answer that did not address my concern. The answer actually SUPPORTS my complaint that contractors should NOT be charged for a so-called "lead" where the customer NEVER responds. Thumbtack wrote: "Customers who have projects or jobs that match your targeting preferences that you entered into your account can reach out to you to learn more about working with your business. When this happens, you are charged a lead fee. You're paying for the value of being connected with a potential customer — whether or not you're hired."
My complaint to the BBB had nothing to do with not being hired. I accept the fact that some customers who contact me will eventually choose another contractor. My complaint is about those customers who NEVER contact me in the first place, despite a standard four attempts on my part to connect with them. In that case Thumbtack is STILL charging contractors a fee and REFUSES to refund that fee.
NOTE that Thumbtack said customers can reach out to contractors, and when this happens, you are charged for that lead. What was left unsaid is what happens when a customer does NOT reach out to a contractor. We should NOT be charged for that so-called "lead" then. Because that "connection" with the customer NEVER HAPPENS because the customer NEVER responded, then the contractor should not be charged a fee. THAT is the issue that Thumbtack refuses to address, and is a major reason why it and other similar services have such a high contractor turnover. If Thumbtack ignores this complaint and refuses to issue refunds where a customer NEVER responds to multiple attempts at contact, then I too will be quitting its service.

Been on Thumbtack for 3 years and it has definitely gotten worse. The leads are always under the wrong category. Even if you respond within 1 minute the potential customer already has another contractor on the way. They are criminals. I tested it and contacted my own business for a maintenance (20-30$) and they charged me for a new install lead (70-80$). If you own a small business do NOT let this company steal your money. They do NOT give credits back for bad leads like they used to.

Thumbtack's policy states that leads not consistent with pro's preferences, problematic leads will be refunded to the pros. However, we are charged for leads that Customer admitted in writing that he made a mistake contacting us, as he didn't see that we charge an on site estimate fee of $50 which is labeled next to our company logo. I can provide images if uploading pictures is allowed. Thumbtack supervisor replied to us that the customer decided not to proceed with us because he changed his mind, which is a blatant distortion of the fact, given the customer admitted in writing that he didn't see the on site estimate.
Further, Thumbtack doesn't refund any leads if the customers never reply to pros, claiming they charge these non -responsive leads because they did advertisement for us. Google Ads charges $0.02 per click on business website. In comparison, Thumbtack charges around $60 for each lead, which is 3000 times of Google Ads advertising fee, astonishingly overpriced. Therefore, I do not recommend Thumbtack.

We own a business and have been using Thumbtack to get leads. We are charged over $100 weekly for "legitimate leads" but we often get suspicious leads that don't even read our response to their inquiry. After using them for 2 years it's pretty clear they create fake leads to charge you hundreds of dollars a month with no chance in assisting the client. We have an A+ rating and a Gold status profile, meaning we have filled all the content out, are professional, contact every "lead" and have a perfect review score from our personal clients. When we ask for a refund for fake clients they prevent it by redirecting the request to a completely different dashboard. They should be inspected by the BBB and closed down. They're predators of local legitimate businesses.

Hi, we're sorry to hear you haven't been satisfied with some of the leads you receive on Thumbtack. We work hard to ensure that the leads on the platform are legitimate. When users report concerning leads, we are quick to take appropriate action. When a lead doesn't respond, that doesn't necessarily mean the lead is not legitimate. We encourage pros to follow up with customers after their initial message, in case the job details have changed or the customer has found someone else.

I have been a Thumbtack Pro photographer for over a year. I reported over $35K gross income just from Thumbtack on my last tax return. BUT, I pay around 50% of my Thumbtack income back to Thumbtack for weekly leads. So my net Thumbtack income was closer to $17K. Why? Well, about three quarters of my leads turn out to be duds. They were looky-loos with no intention of booking, they were new competitors trying to sus out the market, they were fake leads (yes, I've often suspected this), or they booked a competitor and just ghosted me instead of telling me they went with someone else after wasting my time communicating with them about their project.
Thumbtack pretends that they guarantee the quality of their leads. They assure you that every lead comes with a phone number but even when I've determined that the phone number is a fake and brought that to their attention, they don't automatically refund me. Also I often pay for duplicate leads. I contest the lead, Thumbtack makes a pretense of checking it out, then because there's a comma on one lead but not on the other (no kidding) they kick it back and tell me it doesn't qualify for a refund under their policy (they always have a link to their legalese blablabla page with the word "policy.")
If I were only paying for legit leads, I estimate my COA (cost of acquisition) would go from 50% down to under 20%, still high but doable. In other words, after studying my data for a year, I know that I pay at least 30% for fraudulent, illegitimate, or duplicate leads. That's money I'm just throwing down the drain. Because of this, and because Thumbtack never responds to this complaint, I have downgraded Thumbtack in my advertising budget and am focusing on other lead sources. If I get busy enough that I book up without Thumbtack, they will be the first thing I ditch in future budgets.
If their customer service were excellent and if they demonstrated any sort of respect and consideration for the pros they make their money off of, maybe I wouldn't feel so ripped-off by them. But today for instance, I have a simple support request on something I need help figuring out but in the past four hours, I have not been able to connect with anyone in their support team. Four hours and I'm a platinum level pro. I'm supposed to get phone support and prioritized chat support. But nah. They don't care. If you're just starting out, maybe. If you're an established pro, put more money into social media ads or something. Thumbtack's not worth it, imo.

I have been with Thumbtack since 2019. I have used the service for years, the way the application works is you can set a budget for specific targeted leads in different areas of construction work. And you can also limit the distance or areas where you will receive leads from. When I first started using the service I noticed that I would get sent leads when I already had work and I was being charged for jobs that I could not take. I realized that when I found work and didn’t need any more leads from thumbtack and I would have to pause my business.
Thumbtack only allows you to pause your business in certain increments so once that increment of time is up if you don’t change it it will automatically send you leads when it turns on even if you don’t need the leads or intend to. Thumbtack needs to change or add a setting to pause your business until you want to turn it back on. Thumbtack called me and told me that leaving my business hidden has a negative affect on my business as far as leads and Search engine optimization. He suggested I leave it on and use the calendaring feature. He told me that if I block days on my calendar that it would stop leads from being sent to me by people requesting work done on those days. I learned the calendar feature is flawed.
Thumbtack has its customers (leads) fill out a form on their app. The form asks several questions about scheduling and then on one specific page where your picking your availability there is a small box at the bottom of the page that says “open to receive suggestions for other dates from the pro”. Thumbtack preselects this option for the customer, who 99% of the time doesn’t realize the option was selected because THEY DIDN'T select it. I’ve learned this by asking my leads after they tell me they’re not able to wait. This is misleading. Thumbtack does not even provide the customer(lead) with your next available date…
I have disputed several charges from thumbtack that have had this problem and they automatically deny the refund requests. They claim that if a person reads my message and doesn’t respond and I can see that they have my blocked dates selected, that that was a valid lead according to my preferences.. even though it’s obviously not. I have spent several hours with customer service on the phone trying to get a hold of management. I was eventually greeted with an email from thumbtack saying that if I continued to make customer service requests for refunds that “aren’t eligible” my customer support options would be taken away completely.
I continued to try to figure a way around this problem and I was approached with pausing my targeting preferences instead from a customer support rep. I paused my specific preferences each and when I turned them back on all my location settings were reset unbeknownst to me. Thumbtack says this does not happen and that I must have changed them. The settings for all my categories were changed. In order to do this you have to go into each individual category and make changes to many different sections manually.. I made thumbtack aware that I never did that. I am a veteran of this application and have been a top pro, and have been using it for years. This is not an easy mistake to make.
I contacted contact support and they promised me a manager would call me back in 48 hours. I received a call back from the manager three days later. He promised me he would call back on Monday. It has been three weeks since that phone call and I have not received one response to any email from the nasty manager that I got. I decided to go and dispute the charges through my credit card company. When I did that I received a threat from thumbtack saying that if I disputed any more charges that my account would be removed from thumbtack including my 41 five star reviews. I request I receive a recall from management who actually can speak for this company.

It doesn't let you search pros by name.
The way you can initiate contact with the pros is very scripted and limiting. Your best option is to follow whatever stupid questions they ask you, get a phone number from the pro, and cut thumbtack out altogether. Beware, they do not let you delete reviews. He requested a deposit to order the Glass door, which I provided. The door was due on 04/29/2022. We were supposed to meet 2 weeks before delivery to select the tile and other finishes. He did not show but assured me the delivery was on schedule. He came to my home on 05/11 to let me know what the delay was and scheduled another meeting which he missed. After more missed meetings and then no response at all, I contacted Thumbtack and opened a case with the Trust and Safety team. After I provided all requested documentation, they were investigating but had no success with contacting the provider either.
I was scheduled to meet with the Team member who was investigating my complaint on Sunday, June 5th from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EST. The meeting did not have a link or a phone number for contact. The Team member emailed me at 11:00 to remind me of the 12:00 meeting. I responded at 11:47 asking how I was to join with no response and again at 12:05 pm with the same question and providing my phone number as well. They are closed on Sunday. I trusted that the providers were vetted before being presented to the public, not with this one. I trusted that Thumbtack would try to assist me with resolving this issue. Again I have been disappointed. They should also post a warning about this provider on their site to prevent other consumers from being duped as I have been.
