    I recently purchased a home warranty from Select Home Warranty because fixing problems around the house is not my strong suit. That's not what I do for a living! Now, for the last 15 years or so, I did do almost all of my own repairs. I managed to fumble through the issues with common sense, tenacity and plain old dumb luck. However, now that I've gotten older, smashing my fingers or hands hurts a lot. Getting cut, hurts a lot. Getting shocked and blown across the kitchen, that's right, hurts a lot. So by investing in a home warranty sounded like a good idea. In May of '20 I did just that. Then in July of '20 I saw that the plumbing was leaking near a closet.

    For the first time ever, I breathed a sigh of relief. Understand that when I spoke with the salesman, I literally said that, "I want to be covered no matter what! I don't care if I call you to report a light bulb is burned out, I don't want to hear no crap, just change it!" I was exaggerating for emphasis obviously but, you get the point. So, I filed the claim and guess what!? This poor excuse for a company denied me! Saying that "fixtures aren't covered in my contract. Have a nice day." First of all, who said anything about a fixture!? That's an impressive diagnosis from a 10 minute phone call with the lady from India! Second, I don't care what it is, get it fixed! Well, being a shady, bait and switch jerks must be their business model. Trust me and take your business anywhere else. Get a warranty from your spouses cousin that has one tooth and two names, you'd be better off.

    So far their customer service has been pretty good. They usually get back to me within a reasonable timeline and are generally helpful. I didn't pay for the plan since it came with my house but from what the other person paid it seems reasonable. My renewal is coming up soon so I'll see if it stays reasonable. Coverage seems to be a little lacking though since I had a few things that I thought would be covered but was not. That could just be my plan though. I would say if the plan is at a good value or it's included in your house go ahead and get it. Otherwise, it might be better to save up the money yourself.

You can read and decide on your own whether you would like to conduct business with this company. 7/9 - Filed a claim online. 7/12 - 3 days after filing claim, I received acknowledgement of claim via email. 7/13 - I called SHW for an update. No update provided; asked to wait further. 7/14 - 4 days after filing the claim, a third party tech is sent to review the issue.     7/17 - I called SWH for update. I am still told to wait. 7/18 - I called SWH for update. I am still told to wait. 7/19 - After 10 days of waiting, the claim is denied citing the following broad policy statement (btw, I was never provided any such policy documentation when I signed up).

    "This Agreement does not cover any systems or appliances that have had previous repair or that require repair as a result of improper installation, previous repair, damage caused by any construction activity, improper wiring, inadequate or lack of capacity, power failures, power surges, overloads, missing parts, failure to properly maintain, failure to properly clean, neglect, misuse, corrosion, rust, sediment and any modification to the system or appliance. You are responsible for providing maintenance and cleaning by a licensed technician on covered items to ensure continued coverage on such items." In summary, a very lengthy and time consuming process after which the claim is denied. On top, customer service does not care at all. Their standard trained response is to tell you to just wait and "someone will contact you via email".

    I was looking for a new warranty after my American Home Shield warranty expired. I came across Select Home Warranty. They had a better monthly price, and cheaper deductible with great reviews! It seemed like a no-brainer and I gave them a shot. About a month into my warranty, my ice maker on the refrigerator start spewing water everywhere. Left a huge puddle, fortunately, I caught it fairly quickly and was able to disable the ice maker and clean up the mess. I decided to file a claim to get the ice maker fixed. It's clearly covered, right? Anyways, after finding out there is no way to file a claim with a real person, I went to the website to file a claim.

    There is no sign in page, and you have to submit a form. Which I found disappointing since AHS, had a nice portal that had all my information and I could track my claims easily. Anyways, I file the claim as a leak, selected what I thought may be the problem. Honestly, I had no clue, I'm not an appliance expert otherwise I would do the work myself. Anyways, 48 hours later it was denied because apparently what I selected as the problem wasn't covered. No tech, no nothing. They went based on whatever I selected (Like I knew). I found that odd, but needed my ice maker fixed, so I called a local guy to come do a diagnostic since SHW wouldn't send anyone over. Turns out it was the board, the ice maker and it needed a new valve (Nothing close to what I selected on SHW).

    Anyways, I try to resubmit my claim using the diagnostic from the local place since based on the policy the ice maker is covered and the whole was broke and not just some water line as I suspected earlier. Again 48 hours they denied my claim and said none of that was covered. Blew my mind, since the policy explicitly states the ice maker is covered in the fridge, but they couldn't tell me exactly why they denied. When I asked for clarification, I didnt get a response. So I cancelled their service and got a pro-rated rate back and then went back to American Home Shield. At least with them, any time I had an issue the deductible covered the cost of a tech and I never had issues with them refusing to fix anything covered.

    Horrible company. My clothes dryer was making a loud noise. I filed a claim. 5 days later they cannot get anyone to come over. They keep telling me that they cannot locate any technicians in my area. I am in Nashville, TN, the capital of the state and you can't find anyone??? Told me to get someone on my own.     The negative reviews you read on this company are all true. I waited 3 weeks for them to send a service tech...which they never did. They kept saying they had no technicians available in my area. I called my regular service company to come out. My service company was able to come out the next day. They later refused to pay for repairs because James said it was freon related part on AC. A reverser valve that was bad.

    Their website says they cover compressors...which compress freon? They have loopholes to keep from trying to paying anything. The sales Rep promised they covered all parts of AC units...     I have been researching many home warranty plans over the past several weeks. Today I decided to sign up with Select Home Warranty for several reasons. The plan included everything that I was looking for in a home warranty plan. It also offered a lower cost for seniors and some good discounts including two months free and free roof leak protection for the life of the paid policy. I liked that it could be transferred to a new owner if I decided to sell my house or it could be transferred to a family member. Also, I like that the deductible for any service is $60 rather than $75 which most plans charge.

    Another plus for this plan is that it is prorated in case I should opt out of the plan before the six year term of the plan has ended and I would be refunded money due me.     This is by far the worst place I have ever dealt with. If you look at their ratings on Facebook you will see that they are dishonest, avoid at all costs to pay a claim much less send anyone out. My AC went out on Saturday, today is Monday. They advertise they are available 24/7 but not true. I submitted a claim, called twice and spoke with an Asian woman I could barely understand. I canceled my account with them and now they want to schedule an appointment. I have someone in my home who is on oxygen and must have the AC running in the summer. Called my regular Heating/Cooling guy and he said we would be out within 2 hours. Use Select Home Warranty and you might wait a week or two to get service.     Filled Claim #** for AC unit on 7-02-2020 and was told to wait 24-48 hours for a technician to call (never happened). Called back on 07-04-2020 and they gave me the number to call to reach technician and the mailbox was full and he NEVER answered the phone. I scheduled an appointment on the website for AM 07-05-20. They never showed. I called Select Home Warranty back and was told to call my own technician and have him call them before fixing anything for approval. This was now 3 days later (NO air Summer heat).

    My HVAC technician called Select to receive approval on 7-06-20 and said they were extremely sketchy over the phone compared to other warranty companies he had spoken to. They were back and forth with all kinds of weird questions. He was straightforward and explained it was the compressor that needed to be replaced. The Carrier AC unit is only 6 years old and has been serviced yearly. After OVER an hour on phone and after being on hold and asking to call back, then hung up on. They would not approve the work. The said to give them 24 hours to review the claim. On 7-07-20 I sent in the invoice via email claims@selectHomeWarranty.com and was told it would be 24 hours before approval.

    I called them back on 7-8-20 and was told they needed more time. 7-9-2020 they emailed me asking for pictures and maintenance records. I emailed those to them. I called back on 07-10-2020 and they lied and said they had not received my email. After I went round and round and told them I know they received it because I had a read receipt on the email, they said they did receive the email and needed more time to review. I asked to Speak to someone else and she refused and then we SOMEHOW became disconnected. I then called back and became disconnected AGAIN. They are running a very tight ship here with all their electronic e-mails and limited people answering calls and fancy website. PLEASE HELP to stop them. This company is a scam! A FRAUD! Bait and switch!!! They don't want to pay for anything!! Just want your money monthly!!!

    Have had Select for a couple of months. Air conditioner stopped cooling my house, 2nd wk of July, temp mid 90s. Betw the heat & covid 19, HVAC companies were busy, backed up. Called SHW to file a claim to have my a/c fixed. Ended up going up to the 48 hrs & was then told to go ahead & see if I could find HVAC tech. They authorized 100$ to get the diagnosis, I found someone right away, followed SHW procedures for reimbursement, emailed the invoice to them & within 24 hrs received email that my claim has been approved for the cost of the repair, $133 & change.

    I'm satisfied although under the circumstances, I think I should have been given the go-ahead to find a tech before the 48 hrs. Circumstances: filed claim on a Sunday, so there's 24 hrs gone, extreme heatwave (my family including the dog scattered to friends' houses to spend 2 nights). Being in my own neighborhood, I could have had it fixed in one day instead of 2. But again, it's fixed and my claim is getting paid. I'm glad I have the warranty.
