What is RainSoft?

RainSoft produces water conditioning and water filtration systems intended for the whole home or a single point of use. The company offers a free in-home water analysis for those unsure of what they need in their homes.

RainSoft offers three water softener systems that address hard water issues:

  • The EC5 is a premium, computer-controlled, whole-home water softener system that is available in various configurations to fit your needs. It connects to the RainSoft Remind app for low salt notifications and filter change reminders. The system automatically responds to your water use, and the computer control saves water, salt and electricity.
  • The EC5-CAB system saves on salt and water consumption by using shorter cycles based on home water use. It comes with an easy-to-read display and distinctive alarm tones. You can customize the system’s functions to fit your family’s needs, and it's designed to deliver an uninterrupted supply of conditioned water.
  • The TC-M series is available in various configurations to fit your home. It's energy-efficient and self-cleaning, and the high flow rates deliver a consistent supply of water.

For drinking water purification, RainSoft offers:

  • The Ultrefiner II is RainSoft’s premium drinking water system. It uses three high-quality, multistage filters to purify tap water and remove small particles, lead, copper, chromium, VOC and chlorine. It comes with a lead-free faucet. The cartridge is interchangeable, which creates less waste than systems that require the whole filter to be removed.
  • The Hydrefiner II reduces chlorine and other particles that cause bad taste and odors. Each cartridge treats up to 830 gallons of water.

RainSoft also sells problem-specific filters to address individual water issues and systems, including the CleanStart laundry system, which oxidizes tap water to disinfect clothes.

How does the RainSoft system work?

RainSoft water conditioner systems soften water for the whole home using a salt-based ion exchange process powered by electricity. The systems are installed where the water enters your home from the municipal supply. Some systems are designed to provide a continuous supply of softened water, while others have computerized controls that respond to your family’s water use and produce softened water on demand.

While many of the models have self-cleaning and regeneration cycles, most also require filter changes, adding salt and some maintenance. Models come with replacement reminder alarms or connect to an app that alerts you when the system needs attention.

RainSoft water softener cost

RainSoft doesn’t disclose its water softener prices on its website. Its products are available for purchase through local dealers, so if you’re interested in buying a RainSoft system, contact a local dealer for a free in-home water analysis and quote.

There was a RainSoft door-to-door marketing effort in our neighborhood. They knocked on the door and the person was very engaged and intelligent. I've been looking at water softeners for the house so he and I got into a fairly long conversation. I was impressed with the advancements in the technology since I looked at it five years ago. He asked if I would be willing to schedule a sales meeting with the RainSoft consultant to which I said yes. That went pretty good. They did extensive set of tests. Then we did some side by side with RainSoft water samples and what was coming out of our kitchen tap and it was pretty conclusive.

Our water is not bad, but I have always been able to smell a hint of chlorine in it. With RainSoft, none of that appeared. We bought the system for the kitchen. I don't have the finances for the whole house but I have a quote on the whole house so I'm putting the money together. I've got a contracted price and the kitchen system is a down payment on the total system. That price is good for 12 months.

I was real happy with the initial meeting with their sales consultant. He spent about 90 minutes with us, answering questions and going through all kinds of scenarios. I had some concerns at the point of installation though. The installer did a great job but didn't walk me through. At the end of the installation, I was expecting a walkthrough on the system under the sink. There are three cylinders and a storage tank. He left me with the operating manual, and I got around to reading that the other day, which is a couple of weeks after the installation.

Everything is working just fine. But I was reading it, I need some special tools. I've got to get a spanner wrench to change the filters once a year and the size of the spanner wrench is not indicated in the manual. I could look in the manual to see the diameter of what I need the wrench for, but I have a hard enough time looking at tools at Home Depot as it is. These are really small steps but would be a real improvement from my perspective.

RainSoft came out to test the water, and at that moment, they showed us the presentation. What we were amazed at was the amount of contamination that were inside the water, and even in filtered water. We had a filter jug with the filter in it, and the only thing that came close to the RainSoft water filter was bottled water. We got a system for underneath the sink. It is also connected to another faucet right next to our regular faucet. Then there's a small filter system. There's a huge one located right outside our house that filters out the water coming in from the city.

The team members from RainSoft were all great. There was a little issue with the installation. When they were installing the piping, they accidentally cut the internet cable running underneath the ground, which was just installed a week before. It was a new house, so we were just now getting in there, so we did have to call them back out to rerun it. They did run it at no cost to us.

Since the system has been installed, I like the taste of the water. It doesn't leave me thirsty. I didn't really drink the faucet water. I was a bottled water guy. Now, I'm drinking the water through the RainSoft system, so it's saving us money there. My wife notices my skin being a whole lot softer, and her hair is less tangled and she says she's noticed a difference in the way her hair feels as well.

RainSoft is a good investment. We plan to stay in our home long term. However, I was told that we would be able to take our system with us, and it would be reinstalled somewhere else if we just notified the local area RainSoft company, and they will come out to reinstall it. It was a little pricey, but we're looking to pay it off. We're already halfway through on paying it off, we're trying to get it paid off as quick as possible just so we won't have to pay the interest.

I walked in Home Depot and the guy was talking to me about RainSoft. We had bad water, which was non-drinkable and making my laundry hard. I said, "Let me get someone out here to check it out." The RainSoft reps that we interacted with were nice and very informational. Every salesperson that came here to the house sold me on it, then my husband and I agreed on getting the equipment. We've tried it for over 30 days now and we noticed a great change in everything.

Coming out of the dryer, the towels and the washcloth that we use in our home used to be really hard. And when you buy your towels, everything is so plushy, new, and soft, so you want them to stay like that even through your washing. But mine weren't turning out like that. When we got RainSoft, it looks like I bought new washcloths and towels. Then, with the water and the laundry detergent that I was using, with that mixture, it would make things hard. I thought something was wrong with my dryer, but it wasn't that. It was the water that was washing it, because soap was still in it. But now, things are different when we were doing the laundry since we got RainSoft.

I would tell my neighbors that going with RainSoft is a great deal, it will save you money, and you will notice a difference in your laundry. Most of us around here buy cases of spring water. I even got a lady over here who gets it delivered. I don't have to do that anymore, so I'm spending less money now. We're getting older over here, and as we get older, we're looking for saving money, not spending more money. I'm also spending less money on laundry detergent, because RainSoft's rep told me to use my laundry detergent up first, then use theirs, but use half. Now, my laundry is coming out better. The last guy who came out here told us that the system for the whole house that we got from them was running good. He told us that all we would have had to do was add that water softener to the container to keep the water soft. For the upkeep I keep it dust free, because I'm acting like it's a part of the house. It’s a great product.

I live in a townhome complex, and I didn’t know the system as RainSoft at first. One of the ladies here had the system for about eight years and just said she got it from Home Depot when she moved in. I went to all these big companies but they couldn’t find a way to drain the water. LifeSource wanted to put a hole in my garage and run it out to the street, and I said that wasn’t going to work. I decided to try Home Depot since the others seemed very satisfied. The guy who came out was very knowledgeable and explained everything thoroughly. He told me they would have someone come out and find a way to make it work. The other person in the complex had a different system, so I didn’t even know about theirs.

I went ahead with RainSoft even before hearing about all the perks, like the products and the air filter system. I was in the middle of a kitchen remodel and planning to add a Jacuzzi, so I wanted pure water running through the house. The hard water had already damaged my shower. When the installer came out, he kept looking but couldn’t find a place to drain the water. I showed him where others had theirs, but he said that wouldn’t work and explained it could mix with the water. So he called his manager, who was very helpful. He gave instructions on how to locate the pipes. I turned on the water upstairs and checked around the garage, and I could hear where it was coming through. Once they confirmed it, he opened the wall and completed the installation. He was there a long time and put a lot of work into it, but he got the system running.

There was a hole left in the wall, and I was told someone would contact me to fix it, but no one did. I followed up through Home Depot, and they immediately set up an appointment and had it patched. Overall, I would recommend the product and the service. My brother said the system was a little pricey and I told him that the person in the complex got it first eight years ago and it was 8,000. It has only gone up 2,000. The purifying system was 1,200 but RainSoft gave it to me because I’m an older person. Then, you get all these products, and I don’t have to buy things like glass cleaner, detergent, or dishwashing supplies. I live alone, and this stuff lasts a long time.

The system was an investment. I didn’t realize it would cost that much, but I’m not complaining because I love it. It’s something I’m glad to have, especially with my home remodel coming up. We've only had the system a couple of months, but the guy who came out was amazing. He kept going and knew what he was doing and was clean about it. The system is pricey but it offers a lot. It’s a nice system.

We had a water treatment system that was no longer working. So we were trying to get a new system. We learned about RainSoft through Home Depot and we had a consultation with their rep. It was super easy and he was very informative right off the start. He was extremely polite and he answered all of my questions, which I seemed to have like 900 of them. So, it was a very nice experience. He also explained what we could do to save us some money, because through Home Depot, there was the deal of them, if we put it on a credit card, that they would cover our plumbing costs. It didn't seem like a big amount, but any little bit helps.

We got the whole Rainsoft system. We have the one that removed the iron, a water conditioner, and the reverse osmosis. The installation was great and after that, I reached out to RainSoft because I had a question and it was nice not being treated like an idiot, because it was a dumb question and I didn't know how to word it as to not be a dumb question. But they didn't make me feel like that and they were very informative. They put me at ease because I was very concerned about a noise that the system was making. The guy said that it was actually supposed to do that, and that it should have been pointed out to me in the beginning that it was going to do that, and he apologized.

So it's been an awesome experience. It's also the first time in many years that I've been able to have soap bubbles in the basin after I finished washing dishes. So I know I have soap in there. Normally, they didn't last two minutes. Also, everything looks nicer and feels better. When you get done and you feel like, "I want to be squeaky clean and don't want to squeak," and you're not soft. With RainSoft, the skin is really soft and we can tell a difference. I have mentioned it to my neighbors, telling them that that would be something they would benefit from. And we're all in the same water table, so we're all experiencing the same water problems. The other thing is, when you have hard water, you get that orange stain in your shower. Since getting RainSoft, it was very nice to clean that off. It was always back so quickly but it's been over a month now and it's not back.

Even when you wash light colored wash rags that are supposed to be white, they're actually still white without a whole bottle of bleach on them. And the dog likes the water better. When the salesman was out there, he told us we had very high nitrates in our water and he said that he couldn't tell me the water would kill us, but he would tell us that it would be better for our dog if we use the reverse water on them too. And the first time I did it, I cleaned everything up. I was so used to having it be slimy when I went to clean his bowl, and then, the very next time when I had to clean, it wasn't slimy. Plus, our dog is drinking the water more and he's not sticking his nose up to it, which he did before.

The salesman also told us that the reverse osmosis could go under and they could run it back up to our refrigerator so that we could get the water through our refrigerator ice and water. We didn't even know that was possible and it is cool. When you get an ice cube out and it's actually see-through, where you've never had that. You can taste the difference and it's really neat.

These treatment systems are bad for the environment and the sales pitch is very bait and switch. They do not use fixed payment financing as advertised, it is all placed on a credit card with compounding interest. Moving the system costs a lot and many states don't allow the salt style systems at all.

RainSoft Water Treatment Systems' rep showed up on time. He called me a half an hour away. He was great. He demonstrated the water quality, which I told him he didn't have to. I told him it was junk water anyway. But he went through and he let us smell all the soaps for the detergent package that we bought. That was when he turned into a liar. He informed us that there would be a crew of five or six plumbers to come out and install the system. They weren't plumbers. They were installers. They knew their job when it came down to the basics. And all they talked about the whole time they were here was how they had left a tool at another job the day before. I wound up loaning them my driver. It was to drill a one-inch hole in my granite countertop for the water filter, which I specifically told them I didn't want it at the sink. I wanted it routed through my PEX manifold system into my refrigerator.

I'm on an aerobic system, and I didn't want that brine water pumped into my septic. It kills a septic system. Pity the poor people who don't know that, and just let them install it the way they wanna install it, because they will have septic issues within two years, guaranteed. So, when I told them, “No, you're not gonna tie into the waistline and just dump it into my septic,” they didn't know what to do about it. I helped them, looking for a line that exhausted outside. They couldn't handle it. And the salesman even said that they would put in a French drain system, which I was fine with. Five or six guys could not handle it. They drilled the hole in my countertop, which irritated me. I forever got a hole there, and there's nothing I can do about it. That's 2,000 bucks worth of granite. It's a big house.

They said they couldn't patch it in to the refrigerator so I had all of this filter system underneath the kitchen sink. I said, “Guys, I'm on a very expensive PEX manifold system. The manifold is in the garage. Put all that junk in the garage and just tie into it.” They couldn't handle it. The salesman sold us a bill of goods about what they would do, what they could do, what they were capable of doing. They wanted to run PVC lines down the wall. No. So, I told them, “Get all your stuff and get out.” Kicked them off the property. Little did I know that they left all of the filter stuff underneath the kitchen sink half installed, which means that they unplugged my dishwasher from my garbage disposal and never plugged it back up.

The first time I ran my dishwasher, I flooded my kitchen. This is three-year-old cabinets. This is a three-year-old house. I put a lot of water in the kitchen. It flooded the kitchen, the cabinets, and into the pantry. I walked in, I've got a flooded kitchen. That's when I went under the sink, after drying it all out, and discovered that they had never put the line back together the way it should have been. And they didn't take all their equipment, get it off my property the way I told them to. I took all of their equipment, disconnected it, put it outside.

The manager at the shop would never give me his phone number. I spoke to him through the supervisor of the guys that had left their tool at the other house yesterday. I said, “No, you need to get your stuff out of here.” “I'm sorry. What can we do?” I said, “You can replace my countertop. That'll run you about two grand. And you can send somebody who knows what they're doing out here to install it. Other than that, I want my money back.”

We had paid in full $8,990. We don't know him. We don't know if he's honest. It turned out he did not cash that check. And he said, “I'll give you a soap dispenser to fill up the hole in your countertop.” I had already bought one. Other than that, he said, “I can't replace your countertop.” You're the one that drilled the hole in it, just because you didn't realize you were drilling a hole in $2,000 worth of granite that I told them not to do. I didn't tell them not to drill the hole. I told them I wanted the purified water in the refrigerator.

My house is on a manifold system. You can turn off the water to the refrigerator from the garage, and everything else will function, except the refrigerator. So, you can just tap right into it. The guy that came out here that knew what he was doing did exactly that. Amazing. So, all that equipment is in my garage, and my refrigerator gets that purified water, which is exactly where I wanted it. When we want a glass of water, that's where we go because it’s cold.

But the guys that were here that didn't know what they were doing, said, “We would have to put the system in the cabinet next to the refrigerator and drill through the wall.” I said, “You don't seem to understand.” That was on a Thursday or a Friday. The manager guy at the office that I had been talking to said that his plumber was busy or on vacation or out. The following week, the guy showed up, and I hit him at the driveway.

It was him and two other guys. I said, “I've been in construction all my life. I was a general contractor in North Carolina. I know what I'm talking about.” The first set of guys did not impress me. This guy, after talking to him for five minutes, I knew that he knew what he was doing. I went through all these situations with him, and he said, “No, we'll just do this and tie it right there,” and “No, we'll put that there.” He said the water heater drain pan drains outside, right there, and he had tested it. He said, “We'll just tie into that line and run a line into your backyard, and that's where your brine water will go out way out into the back.” It took him an hour to do that. And every time I hit him up with how I wanted it done, he had a solution. He knew the answer. He was good. He knew his job. We finally got it done.

Other than that, my complaint is I cannot find an owner's manual for this system. The guy that installed it said, “Here, you can tie into the internet here and run it off your phone and get all these reports.” I said, “Great.” I had no idea how to do it. Now that I've got the app figured out, it would alert me when I need to add salt. But if I didn't figure that out, all I could do was open up the lid and look in there and say, “Looks like I'm good on salt for a while.” I made a deal with them when we were negotiating price and all that they would supply me with a regular supply of detergent. But they would give me four dispenser packs because I have four adults living in this house. My wife takes baths, I take showers, and my sister and mom each have their own bathroom. They only delivered two, but a little while later, they came back and dropped off the other two.

I also made a deal that they would give me 600 pounds of salt, which is what the salesman said we would use in a year. I said, “Okay, give me a year supply of salt.” They agreed to that. When they dropped off the two dispenser packs, they gave me the extra 12 bags of salt. I had to go through all kinds of problems, phone calls and emails and waiting for them to call me back. All in all, it ended up being a successful transaction. From the salesman to the first guys coming out, the whole thing took 10 days. It was a full week after that before I got the guy that knew what he was doing to come out.

I would recommend the product to a friend. However, I would also insist that I be there when the salesman came, so I could tell the salesman, “You're lying. I've been through this before. Don't blow smoke. Tell us the truth. If you say that qualified plumbers are gonna come out, be sure you send qualified plumbers, not installers.” And there's a huge difference.

I had a phone call with RainSoft, and they told me that they could come out here and test our water. Everything was smooth. The rep had a good sales pitch. He did good. He was easy to talk to. We laughed and joked, and it was a good meeting. The installation went smoothly. It was done in one day. The price is a little high. But if the system works, it's worth it. So far, everything is good. We are just getting used to the soft water. When you take a shower, your skin feels silky, slick. It's different. Our experience was good all the way around. No leaks anywhere. We just gotta go buy several bags of salt.

The installers showed up when they said they would. The installation was done within an hour and a half. Everything went quickly. And we're very happy with it. The taste changed a bit. I would recommend RainSoft to other people. It is a good value.
