Purchased Mohawk carpet at our local Home Depot approximately two years ago in two bedrooms in our home. After one year the nap of the carpet lost its puff. You can also see seams in the carpet. I had the carpet's steam cleaned with very minimal improvement. Contacted Home Depot and filed a claim. I was quickly denied due to poor resolution in the pictures of the carpet I supplied. Pictures aren't the problem, it's the carpet. We spend very little time in our bedrooms, except to sleep. Carpet shouldn't look this poorly after two years of minimal use. Very disappointed with this company. No one is even willing to come see the carpet.
Dear Jeffrey, I'm Laura with Mohawk--I'm so sorry to hear about your experience with your carpet. I'm checking on your claim now and will send you a message shortly with more information. I apologize again, Jeffrey. Take care-- Laura

I went to the floor store in St. Carlos CA, looked at a lot of different options and then decided to buy a Mohawk product as seemed to be the best value. Mohawk did a terrific job with the carpeting. It looks great. The only thing I noticed is, it still gives off an odor after about a week and a half. I suspect some of that dissipates with time.

I purchased carpeting from Mohawk Flooring. I went to the store because they were having a sale and it's what the gentleman showed me. I instantly liked the color so I never looked at anything else. I'd heard of the name for a long time and when I finally noticed that it was Mohawk, I knew I picked the good one. I love it and it feels so nice. But I haven't had it long enough to clean anything on it yet so I don't know how it'll clean up.

I purchased a laminate flooring, the Cornwall Oak, from Mohawk Flooring and it was installed a couple of weeks ago throughout my studio apartment. It's durable. It seemed to be a high-quality laminate. Most people think it's hardwood flooring as it doesn't look like laminate. I coordinated with the floor store and my flooring guy who busily went to go pick up everything. I did all these over the phone, but when I flew back here and moved in, it exceeded my expectation. I'm very, very happy with the flooring. I really like the color and texture.

I bought Mohawk Flooring at Jerseyville Furniture and Gallery. The look of what we were wanting was our main factor and then price but the deciding factor was the the color options. We bought black and it's engineered, bamboo-type flooring, hardwood flooring with the pad already attached. My salesman Jerry ** is wonderful. Excellent customer service. It was a great experience. In fact, my mom and brother are purchasing flooring as well.

I was extremely dissatisfied and disappointed with the level of quality in Mohawk carpeting. Shortly after we put in brand new carpeting into a newly constructed room, we started noticing carpet beetles. At first, we only saw a couple but after a while they started multiplying. We had an exterminator come and look at it and he said that in all probability these came from the new carpet as this room is brand new and it was probably brought in from the outside.
The timeline of the carpet beetles also coincides with when the carpet was installed. He said that the carpet beetles could have attached themselves in the warehouse but they were all over my carpet. They also ended up eating into my suits which I then had to throw away. I contacted Mohawk to file a claim but they rejected it saying nothing more than "Oh it couldn't have been us." Meanwhile, we paid thousands of dollars for this new carpet and now we are stuck on our own trying to get rid of it. Shame on you Mohawk!!

We had Mohawk carpet installed in our living room last week. We are very happy with the product and were very impressed with the dealer and installers. We read some of the reviews online about this particular carpet and were almost going to change our minds based on negative reviews. We are so happy that we didn't do that because we absolutely love this carpet. It is not hard to vacuum and with the professional installation it looks great!!! Would definitely like to do the bedrooms next. We would refer our friends to Hamill's Carpet in Petoskey, Michigan and recommend Mohawk products.

We purchased Ecru from the Plush Innovation collection and I was very highly satisfied with the results. It is very elegant-looking and looked nice with my color scheme. A good trick to pick your shade of carpeting is to look at the first color in the row; that is the base undertone of the carpeting. Plush Innovation offers a very nice selection of many different neutrals and colors. I highly recommend this product.

We had Karastan Smartstrand carpet installed with the SmartPad after seeing advertising about how this carpet cleaned up after a Rhino lived on it for a year. We have 2 dogs and needed something that would not stain or retain odors. This carpet was warrantied against pet urine and staining. After 5 years, with yearly steam cleaning, the carpet started showing large round areas of staining on the stairs landing, the hallway, and the master bedroom. We had an installer come out to replace the landing since the stains kept reappearing. He pulled back the carpet and advised us he was a certified Karastan installer and that our carpet should not be doing that, was defective, and should be replaced.
We filed a claim with Mohawk. They requested cleaning receipts which we provided. They then sent out one of their carpet inspectors and of course, the claim was denied. They then told me to hire a master carpet cleaner to clean the backing, which I did. The master carpet cleaner said it would be a waste of money to clean the carpet and that it needed to be replaced. I called Mohawk again and they said I could re-open the claim, but we would need to hire an independent carpet inspector. Most of the inspectors I spoke with said that Mohawk is the worst company as far as standing by their warranty and will give consumers the runaround and never settles claims. I am having an inspector come and will re-submit it to Mohawk. If they do not replace the carpeting, my next steps are small claims court, social media, as well as TV consumer reports. I'll let you know what happens.

I went in the store, ordered it, and the sales rep was nice, very helpful and knowledgeable. She knew all the different types of tiles and which ones would be best for our situation. There was a little delay in them getting back to me to schedule installation, but once the installer knew about the schedule, it was installed almost immediately. He was very nice and did a good job. It’s amazing and looks beautiful.

I have had this carpet in my home for four years and it is still like new. We waited three years to have it cleaned because it just never seemed to get dirty. The cleaner could not believe the carpet was three years old and never been cleaned as there was very little dirt coming out of the carpet. True to its claim dirt vacuums out of the carpet so it doesn't have to be cleaned as often. All spills clean up with warm water and a damp rag, even red wine. If I ever have to buy carpet again, this will be my choice.

We had our carpet installed 6 weeks ago and are so pleased. We chose a light tan Flaxen, which has really opened up our rooms. The more we vacuum, the softer it becomes! We kept some remnants after the installation and for a week, my husband kept trying to "ruin it." Yellow mustard ground in, wet coffee grounds, chocolate syrup, grape juice. He'd leave me to clean it; pretty quick process following the care guidelines. The big test was pouring full strength bleach directly on it; can't even tell! We have indoor rambunctious dogs and for the first time, I don't need to worry about them destroying our carpet! We have had no problem vacuuming (with old model kirby and newer Shark Navigator). The one comment made that you can see footprints... that is true. The carpet is very soft so you do see indentations after vacuuming, though they also can be erased by sweeping your feet over it. Highly recommend this carpet! (BTW, our tests explain why the lifetime warranty requires professional extraction cleaning at least every 18 months; soil is easily removed from the fibers but some can be seen on the backing.)

We thought that Mohawk Flooring was a good name that's been around for a while when we got our carpet. We also liked the texture of the carpeting we picked from them. When it came to the installation, one person came to measure it and then somebody came out to do it. The gentleman who was there was fine and professional. Today I had my son and he talked about how cushiony the carpet felt. Aside from that, we still have some stairs that aren't done yet. I purchased the matte version of this tile. I love the appearance but when you walk across the floor in bare feet the edges of this tile are sharp on the feet and not comfortable. If you look at the tile the edges are not rounded. I would not recommend this tile for that reason. Maybe the polished version would have been a better choice.

The builder had sent someone "Roger **" to inspect the carpet and it seems like it has been fishy business all around. How does a brand new carpet look old in 2 months and in which world does carpets get purple spots unless the mill is bad? They say it is chemicals used by us when all the products we purchase since years are from Target and so does the rest of America. Are all carpets going purple? We do not have a lab at home mixing chemicals and putting spots on our carpet. Please be aware of who you guys are purchasing a house from and even if you upgrade anything they will find a way to beat you right down. Mohawk is a 1-star carpet and TM thinks it is the best! I bought this for my master bedroom and loved it so much that I carpeted my other three bedrooms a year later. It feels so silky soft underfoot. But the best part is ease of cleaning. I chose SmartStrand because I like VERY light carpeting so stain prevention was a high priority. I have two cats who like to leave messy hairballs on the carpet from time to time. Since installing the carpet, I have had two messy hairball incidents that came out with hardly any effort using JUST water even after sitting for hours. There was no evidence of a stain on my very light rugs. I'm so THRILLED that I made the investment in SmartStrand carpeting.

I had two bedrooms and my upstairs loft done with Mohawk and their sales rep has been very pleasant to deal with but all-in-all, I had a frustrating experience. For the loft, I bought a carpet with square patterns. The carpet is wonderful, but the installation job was not. The salesman said he ordered enough to make the carpet seamless but the installer took it upon himself to cut it to get it up the stairs, therefore we have a few seams to deal with. The installer was in my house from 8:00 in the morning until 9:00 at night, trying to make this right, and then he had to come back twice. In the end, it's not 100% but it's better than it was so I just let it go. But if I were the owner of the store, I wouldn't have that installer on my staff.
On the other hand, the installation in my bedroom is perfect. But then again, I'm thinking about calling them because the edges of the carpet in the office bedroom is not even. When I sat at one side of the room, I saw that it was buckled. I understand the difficulty however because there were furniture so it's got to be tucked better, but that's fixable. That room is small enough so that there's no seam even though there's a pattern.
I'm Laura with Mohawk--I'm so glad to hear that you've found your carpet wonderful, but sorry to hear that your experience with the installation was frustrating. I'm sure that your store and installer will be able to resolve the remaining issues to your satisfaction. Thank you for your feedback, and take care,

We put smartstrand silk in my living, dining room and on the stairs and hallway. It’s all great. We haven't had any issues with it yet. I have 2 children. One is 20 male with a lot of friends in and outta the house, working on trucks and their "toys". Their boots/shoes gets very dirty. Well we put the black greasy stuff on the sample piece to test it... It all came out except a small area around the corner. We didn't use a carpet cleaner, just our hands to get this out. Also, when we bought the carpet, the salesperson said that they power stretch the carpet but they didn't. They ended up having to send somebody else to do that a couple of weeks later. We wanted something that was close to the item that we had, so we went to a local Mohawk Flooring outlet in Pleasanton, CA called The Floor Store, and they found one that closely matched what we had. Looking at it on the showroom floor, the piece of carpet we brought in looked like it was a good match - a shade darker, which was okay. However, when we got it in the house, it was totally different - it was much darker, but it turned out really nice so I liked it.
On the other hand, I wasn’t too happy with the installation team. The leak occurred in the bathroom, and instead of returning out all the wallpaper, the contractor put in some paneling that matched some other paneling that we had in the house. It was the same design, just simple. They were cramming furniture in the bathroom to get it out of the way, so I asked them to be careful since there’s fresh paint. The guy took offense and told me that they could work better if I don’t keep telling them what to do. Other than that, overall, they did a good job and I’m happy with my experience with Mohawk Flooring.

We have always had real hardwood in all our homes for past 30+ yrs. So when we were told it was a better product, we accepted. Within 2 and a half weeks the floor started bubbling and peeling. Informed warranty, was told to wait for 5-month walk through and it would be taken care of. Well at 7 months, an independent inspector was sent out by Mohawk and Mohawk denied replacement due to normal wear and use and also that I did not cover my hardwood enough! This is ludicrous since we are in our 50's and have no children. It is defective and they do not want to incur cost of replacement nor want to take responsibility for their product. Plus, also to insinuate we are irresponsible in caring for our home. They should warrant and stand by their product.

Gorgeous carpet, but most vacuums won't work. Mohawk should let you know. This carpet supposedly is not one that needs a special vacuum. For that, Mohawk should include a vacuum that works with every carpet. I spent $6000 on this carpet! It took me way too much time to find a vacuum that worked. My vacuum that I love, is high suction. It does not work on this carpet. I ordered a vacuum online that was on Mohawk's approved list and it didn't work either. I couldn't push it; the pile is too thick. I had to take the vacuum apart and get it back into the box to send it back.
I brought a sample in to a high-end vacuum store. Couldn't find anything to work there, either. Part of the problem is I only want a vacuum with a bag. My last one had a dirt cup that had to be emptied every time. I decided to stop at one of the big box stores on the way home. I found a cheap $50.00 vacuum that worked great! It's a Dirt Devil Breeze Stretch Model UD3007. Other than that, I love my carpet, and the place I bought it did a top-notch job installing it. It feels really good on your feet and looks great.

We purchased SmartStrand carpet from Mohawk Flooring and they installed it in our three bedrooms, hallway and stairway. The cost is dependent on the contractor, but we worked with them and got it to a reasonable amount (although it was still a little bit higher). We like the quality of the product because we are trying to limit the amount of VOCs in our home. The carpets are made of corn silk and they're CRI-Plus certified. That made a difference to us. The Mohawk sales reps were also nice and the people who came to do the installation were great. Overall, Mohawk Flooring is a company that I would definitely recommend to any friends or family. They’re professional and they've been willing to work with me to help me with my needs.

The 3rd party inspector just left my house, I am in the exact same situation as you, except we had them pro cleaned twice, at least my inspector was professional. He said we should hear from Mohawk in 3 weeks at the most, and if we do not we should get the place we bought the carpet from to follow up. Keep you all posted!
UPDATED ON 11/10/2015: Mohawk's analyst came by to take a few strands and samples. Sent to the lab. Mohawk says that we did not get the carpet cleaned frequently enough, and they said the carpet cleaning company did a bad job. This is Alberta Carpet Cleaning, they even sent a senior tech over to re-clean the carpet, as we felt it must be the cleaning right? I mean, if this carpet can handle being the floor covering for a Rhino for a full year, and then just come clean with a spray hose, it is obviously the sub-standard carpet cleaning outfit! I guess me and my wife, with no kids, and no pets, are a lot filthier than a Rhino! Ha Ha! I feel really dirty, I need a shower. Oh well, never trust a salesmen, never trust a manufacturer, do your third-party research on the Internet to arrive at your own conclusions. I wish I had done the research, I would have quickly found out what Monarch is all about.

We were very happy with our carpet we picked out. Even when they laid it, so nice to walk on new carpet. There is two of us. We spent most of the winter downstairs in our family room. I noticed in February the carpet looked worn and sort of dirty. Surprised us! I called the Attorney General not knowing what to do. I was told to call Lowe's where we bought the carpet. I filed a complaint with them. Sent pictures. They were very helpful. Then we got a call from their support team, who told me they were there to help us all the way! They got in touch with Mohawk.
We were told we had to have the carpet hot water cleaned. It was only 7 mo. old. We did so. Mohawk sent out their inspector after we had it cleaned, and I requested Lowe's to come out also. He told us the carpet was worn as well as the guy that cleaned the carpet. Well guess what!!! We were told that the carpet we bought was suppose to lay down like that. What we bought was the top grade, stain resistant, and last 25 years! Now we are stuck with it. I was told by a another carpet dealer to get in touch with Stain Master. I so tired of talking and texting, sending pictures. My head is pounding and my heart is broke. What has happened to people that stand behind their products???

I purchased an Active Spirit carpet in my house. It's only 1-1/2 years old and it looks 10 years old (see attached picture I took comparing the worn carpet to a piece of leftover carpet from installation in the bottom of the picture). Mohawk sent a 3rd party inspector and I explained that I live by myself and this is not normal wear, he agreed. However, my claim was denied blaming my vacuum cleaner for just skimming over the carpet and not picking up the pile and it was matted. There's no vacuum or professional cleaning service that could make this carpet look better. I had it professionally cleaned, and it looked the same. Terrible product and customer service. Mohawk Carpet doesn't stand behind their 10-year Abrasive Wear, Fade Resistance and Texture Retention warranties.

We purchased carpets from Mohawk Flooring and they were installed in our three bedrooms and our living room. We did look at other brands, but we liked the pattern of the carpet at Mohawk. They look nice and just the colors we were looking for. We didn’t have any problems with the sales reps and installation team too. The only thing is when we laid the carpet in the living room, we did have a couple of lines going up the center of the floor. They're sort of grooves in the carpet. They're still there and we're hoping that they're going to work out. Hopefully, it's just a carpet that was pressed or pressure mark and that the vacuuming off will make it disappear eventually. We'll be satisfied once those marks do come out. But it really looks good overall.

The problem is that every footprint shows up on the carpet, it looks as if someone did a poor mopping job trying to clean up a spilled Nestle quick spill. These spaces feel like a complete oasis now. Everyone that walks in is spewing compliments on how amazing it looks! So far, we are thrilled with the wear unlike some of the reviews I've read. We knew the risks of going with a light color but when I spilled some nail polish (which nearly killed me) on this carpet and Mohawk walked me through the process to clean it up - it worked perfectly! We hire a contractors that installed Mohawk strand bamboo flooring in 2011. Everything was done properly, acclimation, installation, etc. Almost immediately the flooring began to cup, warp and gap. Here we are four years later and three levels of flooring are all in poor shape and of course Mohawk will not accept responsibility even with a 25 year warranty and hundreds of complaints on this particular flooring. As always it is the contractor's fault, poor install and improper acclimation. The floor is no longer manufactured due to so many issues but again it is the contractor's fault. Mohawk is a multi-million dollar company selling a product that has multiple issues and they are not able to back their product. Warranties mean nothing to this company. This floor cost $37,000 four years ago - do the math.
Updated on 8/18/2015: I have spoken to Mohawk Customer Reps regarding the floor issues and they promised to get back to us. That was August 6. Have not heard from them since. Not surprised with all the open complaints concerning the same flooring and lack of satisfaction. Flooring is no longer manufactured due to multiple issues and customers and contractors and stuck holding the bag on this faulty product with no protection even though the flooring is supposed to be covered by a 25 year warranty. Who protects the consumers? Why is it that the big companies always have an excuse and never admit their product is inferior.
Read about bamboo, it is not mature, stable, if it is not dried properly it is prone to shrinking which causes the gapping and cupping. Bamboo is treated with all kinds of chemicals, many of them toxic. Mohawk needs to take responsibility for this product not just stop manufacturing/selling it but actually looking out for the consumers who keep you in business and buy all your other products. Stop sacrificing your contractors and consumers. Need pictures? I have hundreds with written reports. The floors have become a hazard for the homeowner. Mohawk needs to do right by the consumer.

In April 2014, I had a representative from Empire direct me towards a type of carpet that would best suit my needs for my home. I have a small living space as well as 3 dogs. I told him my dogs do have accidents in the house. He assured me the carpet and padding that he directed me towards would withstand the animals and clean up nicely with no discoloration or issues with the carpet. I trusted him and agreed to the purchase and paid cash for a better deal. In May of 2014 I had the carpet installed. The first time the installers came they discovered the carpet was cut wrong and I had to reschedule so the proper amount of carpet was corrected. A week later I had the carpet installed. The installers were great! Very professional. Within 4 months a large seam came apart and was fraying. The installers came out and said the carpet was inferior. The company replaced the carpet and reseamed the carpet.
Five months later another seam split and frayed. I also had fraying in a large portion throughout the entire carpet that was installed along the edges and heavy traffic areas. I had called the company and they sent an inspector to look at the area. She took samples as well as pictures. A week later I was told that the seams were not under warranty because my dogs has an accident on them. I was shocked. I told them I purchased this carpet with the understanding that this type of carpet would withstand animal accidents. Also she did not address the fraying in the other areas. I was told that because of my dogs, the fraying was not under warranty and the warranty was a wash because of my dogs having accidents.
As of today, June 18, 2015 I have the original seam problem again with fraying and ripping. The carpet is barely 1 year old and looks terrible. I have fraying everywhere. The carpet is clearly inferior. Empire offered to replace the carpet if I purchase carpet at 50% off of the price. I feel that is ridiculous. Why should I have to pay for carpet after having new carpet installed a year ago. I trusted the salesman's word on the quality of the carpet he directed me to buy. The carpet they replaced was 16 yrs old. Its seams were in tact and the carpet didn't fray. I replaced my old carpet because it was discolored from age and worn out due to heavy traffic and use. I got that carpet from Home Depot. I will not do business with Empire again nor will I recommend them. I feel I was not given quality carpet. I also feel offering me a discount on more carpet a year later is insulting. I have been in the retail business for 30 yrs. I know this is not good business practice.

We recently moved into a new 5000 sq ft home in March 2014. We had Mohawk carpet (Kuhlman Crossing) installed only in the bedrooms. At first the carpet looked great, but quickly it started to show significant wear and matting! By 8 months I started contacting the builder who in return got in touch with Mohawk. It took 7 months to FINALLY get someone out to the house to inspect it. When the inspector saw the carpet he even said, "Wow that's bad!" He ran his tests and said we would hear back from Mohawk.
After 3 weeks of waiting, we got an email that said our "claim has been declined and that the complaint is found not to be a manufacturing related issue." We have used Mohawk carpet in the past and never had issues like this! On the Mohawk website it states that the carpet we have is "best for mod. to light traffic areas, like bedrooms." That is exactly where we have it. We don't wear shoes in the house or have pets. I vacuum once a week and yet they say it needs to be cleaned! What carpet needs to be cleaned after only 8 months?? It is VERY disappointing that a name like Mohawk won't stand behind their product.

What a runaround! I bought the SmartStrand carpet and it started showing wear and spots almost immediately. I tried getting them out with water but finally called ** who told me to have it professionally cleaned. This I did and the spots faded but were still visible and then of course more arrived. I had it cleaned again and again contacted Lowe's. This time I sent them the cleaning receipts and they forwarded me the response from Mohawk. The cleaning company wasn't CRI-certified so the warranty was no longer valid. Also they had no pictures.
They never asked for these and no one mentioned CRI companies. There are none within 10 miles of me. Lowe's told me only to use a professional company so I got a top-rated one that is operating in several cities. So far no resolution and Mohawk tells me they won't deal with me, only Lowes, and Lowes tells me that they always give the number of Mohawk to the customer and don't deal with the claims. Seems to me they have a watertight "no claims accepted" policy.

My wife and I spent a fair amount of money on Mohawk Urban Adventure carpet, over 1,000 square feet of it. We bought it partly because Mohawk claimed to have installed it at a zoo where elephants or rhinos walked on it, so we thought it would be durable. It is absolutely not. We have a dog, a Corgi, who sometimes likes to race around the house with a squeaker toy. He only weighs 24 pounds and every time he has one of his escapades, I have to trim at least one loop that has pulled loose. This has been going on since immediately after it was installed.
We contacted our local dealer, Northwest Floors, who has been very nice and they contacted Mohawk. Several months later, we finally got a call from a carpet inspector. He came out and looked at the carpet and at the time he said he thought it was probably defective. He took a large sample with him for testing. Several weeks later, Mohawk contacted Northwest Floors and said there was nothing wrong with the carpet. We will never buy Mohawk carpet again, not ever.

Bought a new home with a installed. This carpet is sort of like a short shag carpet. Looked great initially. After about a month of living in the home (no shoes rule, vacuum at least weekly) we noticed what looked like premature wear in the main traffic areas (hallway, entries to bedroom, etc). At first look, one would think that the carpet was a few years old. After looking closely at the carpet, you could see that the mats were "broken down".
We tried several things like carpet brushes, different vacuuming techniques, etc. Finally, figured out what brand the carpet was and researched the warranty. I found out that there was a great warranty so I contacted the dealer as directed by the Mohawk consumer affairs department. The dealer was absolutely horrible with returning calls, but after over 90 days of trying to get a resolution, we were informed that our claim was denied. So, if you want carpet that shows significant wear after only 60 days of use, get Mohawk.

I have been fighting for months and months now over a carpet that was installed in September 2014. I purchased this ** and as you can see it's marketed as PET carpeting! "This soft, naturally stain-resistant carpet is perfect for families with kids and pets." We also purchased their "smartcushion" carpet padding that was recommended. It also says there will be no pet urine retention (smell), there is. It said it's pet friendly, it's not. In the first few days I was complaining about it. I was told it's an installer error, so after seeing them twice more, the head of the installation company came to see the issue. He thought it was important enough to take lots of pictures and contact the carpet company Mohawk so they would stand behind their product and their claims.
They requested a sample of the carpeting for "testing" and sent out an inspector. The sample "proved" it wasn't a manufacturing issue, and they would do nothing about it. The urine issue wasn't even given the time of day although both should be covered under their warranty. Lowe's only wanted to give me free installation on a new carpet that I would have to purchase! They believed this was fair. I already paid over $3,500.00 for the mess I have now! I entered in a contract with Lowe's and they should honor it. I'm sorry Mohawk won't pay, but in the end it's Lowe's who I have to deal with and I want my money back. They can go after Mohawk since they represent them. I, too, am looking into a lawsuit against BOTH companies. Feel free to contact me!

HATE IT! Several years ago,I decided that I wanted to replace the builder grade carpet in our master bedroom. Looked at a lot of carpet brands, and since we had two small Maltese dogs at the time, decided on the SmartStrand based on their advertisement. Bought it from Wilson's Carpet in Summerville, SC. I do not have any argument with them, or their installation people. The treatment we received from them was exceptional. Our problem started not long after we had it installed.
Our old dog got sick on the carpet. We cleaned it up, per manufacturer's instructions. The spot came back up through the carpet. Had it professionally cleaned, by Wilson's, it still came back. They recommended another cleaning after I had the padding replaced. The line of thought was that it kept reappearing because the padding was holding the stain and sending it back up through the carpet. They replaced the padding, which I paid for, and re-cleaned the carpet. Now, I have paid more money out for cleaning and padding. Still the stain reappeared. Now, we are talking about replacing the carpet, and they interfaced with Mohawk and got approval. A year later, you can't keep it clean from foot traffic. It unravels at the doorway, and the seam is showing. Will NEVER buy from Mohawk again, EVER! I am retired. What a waste of my money!

We empty a good deal of the rug into the garbage each time the vacuum is cleaned. I talked to customer service at Mohawk and they were very sorry but we were beyond the 1 year warranty and could do "nothing." I purchased Mohawk Lucky Ticket carpet from Home Depot in Hawaii; install was 6/13/13. The hallway seam separated, and the Home Depot installer had to piece the carpeting on 05/12/14 (within the one year warranty, it started to fail). Now I have a stripe a different color. Now the very large living room seam has separated, right down the middle; ugly! Home Depot send out the inspector; the carpet is delaminating, the fibers are separating from the back, as the latex holding them together has failed. SURPRISE!!!
They voided the warranty, even though the carpet is 22 months old... because it was rented for part of the time, and the professional cleaning was done at 21 months, not 18, as is their policy. Their consumer affairs department is a wall, I am sure because they have so many claims for their awful product. Bottom line, blown off by Mohawk and Home Depot. Ouch!!! This is definitely a product liability issue, time to file in small claims court.

Our reviews keep on getting deleted on the Mohawk Website, so you cannot rely on what is said there. Very Disappointed, impossible to vacuum. Mohawk Serene Selection Silk Carpet - When it comes to the "Silk" carpets, Don't Buy IT! Don't Buy It! Don't Buy It. We were seduced by the softness of this carpet, and now will be paying the price every time we come to vacuum it. Simply it's impossible to vacuum (like vacuuming a bunch of plastic bags). We have an expensive central vacuum in our home that we cannot use to clean this carpet because it has "Too Much Suction". Mohawk's solution is that we should go out and buy a cheap Walmart vacuum with poor suction. Who are we kidding? How are you suppose to maintain your carpets with a poor quality vacuum? I would be better off going into the garden shed to get the rake out and use that. It would be just as effective.
We have 137 square yards of this stuff. If we can't get a proper vacuum solution, this carpet is going to get taken out. There is a reason that they only have small sample pieces that you can take home. When we were shopping for carpets, we were concerned about vacuuming a soft carpet, so we got a sample of a "similar" soft carpet. This sample was made with nylon. Had we known that the Smartstrand Silk was much more difficult to vacuum than nylon, we would not have purchased this carpet. Update! Lucky for us, the carpet had flaws in it unrelated to vacuuming and had the opportunity to replace it after having it for a month. Mohawk had sent in a carpet inspector and had verified the problem to being a bad lot that should have been rejected. We were getting strands that kept on delaminating from the backing. All the carpet needed to be replaced! The only is that it needed to be replaced with another Mohawk product.
Rather than going for the soft fiber, we upgraded to the Colonial Park which gets softness by increasing the length and density of the carpet. The fault of the Silk style carpets is that the fibers were too soft and sealed the vacuum head air openings, not allowing for air to flow. We insisted on getting a large sample of the Colonial Park in order to test our vacuum on it. We found that with the increase in fiber density, the vacuum head did not get trapped into the carpet and allowed air to flow. To make a long story short, we pulled out our checkbook and paid for the upgrade. As the second carpet was being installed, the installer noticed a shade variance in the carpet that highlighted all the seams he was making. This defect did not affect durability and the new carpet was a lot easier to vacuum so we decided to accept a claim credit rather than having it replaced for a third time.
It's been two years since we went through this renovation nightmare. We are happy with our new carpet. However, we are disappointed in Mohawk for continuing to sell their "Silk" carpets and causing this grief and disruption to thousands of households. I don't understand how this could be good business.
Enclosed are two pictures that show the defect in the first carpet, and Technical Bulletin from H-P Products about Silk carpets being a problem with no solutions. Our rating below applies to the first carpet.

That worked, but spots showed up again in less than a week. We bought a Bissell Spot Bot. That cleaned them up too, but spots reappeared again. After 2 years, we had the carpet professionally cleaned. Same results as before. We started a warranty complaint thru Lowe’s. That took 3 months. End result: Mohawk would not honor their "LifeTime warranty" against stains. Mohawk said the carpet had to professionally cleaned every 6 months. There is not any mention of that in their "LifeTime" warranty. This carpet cost us a small fortune to buy. We even used the padding recommended by Mohawk. Buyer beware. Not an honest company.

Purchased carpet for our condo 2 years ago, it was mohawk's smartstrand carpet. After having it professionally installed by lowe’s, we noticed it looked like you were walking in sand. Everywhere you walked it got matted down. After 2 years it looked like we had it in there for 10 years. The previous carpet we had was in there for 7 and still looked new as we don’t wear shoes in the condo, but wanted a change. With all their warranty labels, we called lowe’s and were told we had to initiate a claim with mohawk. We started a claim with mohawk and they sent lowe’s out to take pictures and send it back to mohawk.
Mohawk denied the warranty as we had it cleaned 3 weeks out of their warranty stipulations. Stipulations which i found out later can only be found on their website. No pamphlets, nothing on the carpet label, nothing on the mohawk signs at lowe’s. Mohawk said it was OUR responsibility to look on their website and know the warranty stipulations. They offered us nothing!!! Even after talking to a supervisor! All we were asking is for some kind of compensation towards new mohawk carpet and they would not help us in any way shape or form. Lowe’s stood behind their sale and gave us new carpet at cost and no labor for installation. You can guess that we did not use mohawk again! I don’t know how they can get away with that! Buyer beware!

It is less than 72 hrs of installation of 1000 sq ft of Karastan's SmartStrand (50% SmartStrand and 50% P.E.T.) in our upstairs bedrooms and I already regret my selection. Although the color is perfect, I can see every footprint and vacuum marks on the carpeting. The pile is made of a two tone twist fiber strand in white and soft grey. Within these few hours, the carpet looks worn and stained (it is not). As for vacuuming, I can barely move my central vac over the rug. I can drag the vacuum backwards but cannot push it forward. I consider myself an educated buyer. I called Karastan prior to my purchase to check into this particular rug. I had confidence in this manufacturer as years ago, this brand was considered one of the top manufacturers of carpet goods.
Although it was bought by Mohawk, I was told they operate independently from Mohawk. I was also told that the rug I planned to purchase has a 3.5 out of 5 approval rating - which is above average. (I should have asked who was surveyed!) I trusted my salesperson who said that because it was 50% SmartStrand, I would NOT have the problem of vacuuming as seen on the Internet nor would I have to buy a special vacuum cleaner for this carpeting. As a side note, I found over 1/2 dozen of what I thought were lady bugs. I found out that in fact they are Japanese beetles (Harmonia axyridis). Luckily no pesticides are needed to rid the carpet of this problem. The solution however, is constant vacuuming to lift up and away all eggs. (My shoulders and back are already aching from trying to vacuum this carpet.)
Not sure how this will all turn out as I have yet to contact Karastan or my salesperson. I am just writing this review to pre-warn any potential buyers of SmartStrand. You cannot vacuum away the footprints and vacuum tracks from this brand of carpeting. In fact, you can't vacuum the carpet. If you are a conscientious home owner and you, your family or guests have allergies to dust pollen etc... this SmartStrand carpet is not for you!

What I have: SmartStrand w/ DuPont Sorona; Style: Soothing Manor; Color: Flaxen; Fiber Trinexta PTT (Bio-Sorona).
I had this carpet installed in November 2012, at a cost (including labor) of $5,900 -- a fairly pricey choice for me, but wanted something that would last, and was impressed by the claims made both by Mohawk & the carpet dealer. I am extremely disappointed, and honestly feel duped by both the dealer and the company. The problems began soon after it was installed, when strands of carpet began 'breaking off' or 'snagging'. I live alone -- no children, no pets -- wear slippers 99% of the time & barely even walk on parts of the carpet, so it certainly can't be said that 'rough treatment' applies!
I called the installer right away (reputed to be the best in this area), but he more or less brushed my concerns aside -- took out his scissors & just began snipping off the stray snags. He told me to do the same, and not to worry, that it would 'get better.' Yet still, to this day, I have to take time occasionally to go around 'snipping.' There are also several little 'fuzzy' spots (maybe 1 1/2-2" diameter) that look almost as if they are 'melted' -- which isn't even possible!
While I don't notice footprint impressions others have mentioned, there DOES seem to be a 'wear pattern' in heavy traffic areas, where the pile appears to be more compressed. I am also very displeased that the 'vacuum patterns' are so noticeable. I was under the impression (whether I was told this or not, I can't say) that this carpet had no nap (almost like berber), but this is not the case. The streaks left after vacuuming are VERY noticeable, and the nap very visible, making the carpet look streaked & messy (dirty, even) when I know it's not. A great disappointment from the start.
Finally, and relative to the above, at the time of purchase, I was given NO literature or instructions relating to the care of the carpeting (neither written nor verbal) so was never aware until last month (when I was shopping for a new vacuum) that the carpet required a particular brand or type of vacuum. I had a little cheap Bissell (Powerforce Model 6579-2) at the time of purchase, and since it has a height adjustment & worked well, I kept using it. It finally broke, & when I was shopping to replace it, the saleslady just happened to have worked as carpet saleswoman previously, and SHE was the first person to tell me that SmartStrand required special features, such as adjustable height, etc.
All in all, I would NOT recommend this carpet, highly or otherwise. I will add that my nephew & his wife have it, and apparently love it, so maybe I just got a bad lot. Who knows?

I had this carpet installed in December 2012 and immediately regretted it. First off, you can see every footstep and vacuum track, which is very unsightly and cheap looking. And as far as vacuuming is concerned, it is extremely difficult to do, as if you are pushing and pulling the vacuum through mud. If you have any kind of shoulder or back trouble, you're screwed. I personally was not about to buy a new vacuum to replace my Dyson and the dealer never mentioned needing a particular vacuum for this carpet or I would not have bought the carpet. I have never heard of needing a certain brand of vacuum to be able to vacuum a specific brand of carpet. This should probably be disclosed by Mohawk upfront and the buyer made to sign a release that they understand that if they choose not to purchase the recommended vacuum, the warranty is void. Of course, nobody would ever buy the carpet, so Mohawk would never do that.
But my major complaint has to do with the "pulls" all over the carpet, even in places where there is no foot traffic. I have 25-year-old carpet in other rooms and not one pull. The Smartstrand looks awful with all these threads sticking out all over the place. I have a feeling Mohawk would say it is because I am not using the vacuum they recommend, but as mentioned above, that should be disclosed before the final sale. And no carpet as expensive as this should get pulls from vacuuming, pets, foot traffic, or anything, for that matter. It just should not happen and the fact that it does means the carpet is defective.
I decided against contacting Mohawk about the pulls after reading countless complaints from consumers about how Mohawk blew them off and made it the victims' fault rather than admitting there is a defect in the product. I don't have the energy to fight a losing battle. However, if there is ever a class action suit against Mohawk because of the defects I and others have experienced with Smartstrand carpet, I would be happy to join the fight. There is nothing I would like more than to win a suit and replace this piece of garbage.

I purchased new carpeting in September 2014 from company called Floor Traders in Saginaw, MI. Today being end of January 2015 I see highs and lows and it's frayed in certain areas. Called the company and it was like, "Sorrrrrrry you bought it and the warranty is up," therefore I am stuck with it. I am still paying for this carpet. I was willing to purchase new carpeting from them but they would not even meet me half way. I wanted to know who the owner of the store was but they would not tell me either. I am a retired person and looks like I am screwed. I am really upset and hurt over this whole ordeal, they come on so nicey, nicey people but boy, find something wrong and I am the evil one.

In the middle of having our 3k sq ft house re-carpeted, we noticed every few feet it felt as if there were no padding under the 8# padding. The installer was horrible jerk and refused to admit it was defective after telling me they've had problems in the past with Mohawk's padding...edges giving way, less dense, but then he denied telling me this. What a terrible liar he is! Looks like Mohawk is back to selling defective junk! The edges of the padding density varies and gives way. I'm thankful for Sandy Decor in Sandy Oregon is working hard to get this taken care of and have refunded us the cost of the padding and willing to pay for installation when we replace the padding. This has been a major ordeal for us having our home in such disarray awaiting carpet. My husband and I are both disabled, can't do much...but sheeeze...new carpet should be a great thing, not a humongous headache like has been. I'm hating this...regret getting new carpet now.

Lowe's installed the flooring in 10-2-12. One week after installing it I noticed chipped areas and raised areas. Lowe's return and repaired the chips and then came back and replaced part of the kitchen flooring for the raised areas. After that areas all over the house started to raise up. Lowe's sent a Mohawk rep. 11-27-12. I told him I dripped some water on the one plank so he said it was my fault but there wasn't water on any of the rest of the house and it was doing the same thing. I had Shaw laminate floors down for 10 yrs in the kitchen and dining room before and had no problems with it and only took it up because I had a new kitchen put in and wanted the laminate to match in the rest of the house.
I wish I had read reviews on Mohawk before. I know I would not have used Lowe's or Mohawk. This flooring was special ordered and had a lifetime guarantee. I am retired and don't have a lot of money and thought this would be the last time I would have to replace my flooring. Please help me, you are a large company and should be able to back your products with little expense and it would not hurt you. For me it is a different story.

Mohawk SmartStrand Carpeting and Pad - We purchased this specific carpet from Lowes back in March of 2012. The carpet seemed to be perfect for our back room (12' x 20') due to its durability of pet stains and high traffic. After about 6 months the carpet was looking more and more dirty. We are very clean people and do not wear shoes on the carpet, but there were black oil looking stains appearing. We cleaned the carpet and the oil/dirt stains disappeared, only to come back about a week later. I called Lowes and they referred us directly to Mohawk.
I called numerous times with no help. After two years the stains are still appearing and once cleaned are going away... only to reappear a short time later. I went to Lowes two weeks ago and saw they were still selling this awful product but last weekend we went back and noticed they are not selling this product anymore. I am so aggravated that I was sucked into buying this ridiculous carpet that is not holding up to its marketing and even more annoyed that 89 other people are having issues with Mohawk flooring. Something needs to be addressed. I have saved all of my receipts from this purchase and am getting nowhere with Lowes or Mohawk. If anyone has a suggestion of what to do next, I would greatly appreciate it.

I've been told Mohawk will do nothing until I shampoo the carpet because it is dirty! We are either in our socks or bare feet since this is our bedroom area!! However, the carpet appears to be 10-15 years old and has a pink zigzag type print in each room which is what I understand the end of the roll of carpet that should have not been installed because the installer should have noticed it, and requested new carpet to install due to defects. We have been trying to get something done about it for a year, and Sears or Mohawk does not want to take responsibility, not do they follow through on returning our phone calls. We have made several attempts to both Mohawk and Sears, and cannot seem to get any help or results, but yet we are still paying for this so-called quality carpet with a 20 year warranty. I would not recommend getting Mohawk carpet or dealing with Sears. Neither of them stand behind their work.

We purchased Smartstrand carpet from Harvey Norman Flooring Canberra Australia at a total cost of $A 9238.40 on the basis of its lifetime guarantee against staining by dog urine following effusive endorsement by the sales staff. At the time our existing carpet had substantial wear left in it, though it was discolored in several prominent places by dog urine. We had no intention of replacing it when we visited the showroom shop room simply to choose a rug for the family room. We were persuaded to replace it by the marketing claims made about the above carpet and in particular, its life time guarantee against staining from dog urine. My wife specifically told our sales staff at that time that we had dogs and that we had problems with dog urine. We were so enthusiastic about the product that we even encouraged our daughter to undertake a similar purchase for her house because she also had dogs.
In the event we were quickly disappointed and made several complaints to the salesman about the reappearance of urine stains that had already been cleaned. He examined the stains and reassured us that the particular staining was inconsistent with the life time guarantee and had to be fixed or replaced. He also took photographs of the stains. He also arranged for the carpet to be professionally cleaned; but to no avail; the stains came back. When my wife attempted to followed up with Mr ** , she was put through to you and encountered a litany of excuses. On a subsequent phone call regarding the problems we were informed that the particular salesman had left. Our daughter, also experienced similar problems and after drawn-out painful negotiations, her purchase price was refunded..
We have since learned from carpet cleaners that numerous other customers for this product in the Canberra region were experiencing similar problems though the retailer denies it. Because of pressure of other concerns, we chose not to press the matter at the time relying on the life time guarantee, to protect our investment. In the event, we recently decided to replace this near new carpet in our hallways with timber flooring at our own expense because the staining was no longer tolerable and the joints were unsightly. We did not feel that we had the energy to fight the retailer. Nevertheless, I was horrified to discover that the removed carpet had delaminated over large areas and that the delamination extends into the other carpeted rooms. It was similar to, but much more extensive than the attached Internet illustration.
A quick Internet search revealed that this is the most serious problem faced with carpet and is most likely a result of the poor quality of the latex glue used to adhere the carpet to its substrate. We understand that pet urine could damage the latex glue, further illustrating its unsuitability for our specific purpose and the misleading nature of the marketing claims that were made.
The carpet has been inspected by a carpet repair expert, another company, and we have been advised by him that the carpet cannot be repaired and has to be replaced because of the delamination. This is independent of the failure of the carpet to live up to its pet stain guarantee. He noted that the cut edges had not been properly sealed with latex glue on installation, something the retailer denies. We have now called the retailer, sent him a letter of demand and intend to take him to the small claims court. From our conversations with him and our daughters experience, we have no confidence in his integrity or of the manufacturers. In short there appears to be a worldwide problem with the quality of this carpet and with the integrity of its manufacturer and retailers.

We had Mohawk carpet installed two days ago. It was Triexta Enthusiastic II in the oyster color. We purchased it at Home Depot in our town. I spent a lot of time educating myself on all types of carpeting - the texture, the twist, the density, the materials. I looked more into that than looking at the color because I wanted the best quality I could get. I called the 1-800-266-4295 Mohawk regular consumer number probably about 10 or more times asking all kinds of questions about nylon versus Triexta.
I looked at the complaints and good reviews of the Triexta in particular. And Mohawk’s Triexta only. I probably called their tech support at least 6 times asking all kinds of questions when I looked at some of the complaints that were listed online. I knew through talking to Mohawk's tech support, that we would need a different vacuum because of the density of the carpet. Since we wanted quality, a new vacuum would be ok we figured because we wanted denser carpet. I even went in to the specifications of Triexta and looked at their warranty package online. I especially looked at what the complaints were about Triexta - not having the right vacuum was the major one.
We paid $4.82 a sq foot. This is not your bottom or even mid-range carpet. Immediately we noticed footprints in the carpet. Not just footprints - FOOTPRINTS. You can see my toe prints. Well, today I contacted Mohawk to complain and start a complaint review. I was given tech support. Gal was very snotty on the phone, not happy like prior to my purchase. She gave me tech support's number, which I can almost tell you without even looking up the number. Well, the gal at tech support got very snotty too. She said that I should have looked at the warranty because it does state in there that SOME footprints or vacuum marks might be visible in their carpet. I told her it was MORE than visible. I am going to try to take photos of what I am talking about. I am so upset because I spent so much time asking all the questions, and footprints was not one of them - I have never had a carpet show it like this. Very unhappy. If I could give Mohawk zeros I would.
Updated on April 6, 2015: Today is 4/6/2015. I still do not have a replacement carpet. I was told by the group at Mohawk, since Home Depot did not have any other carpet for me to choose from, that I could look outside of Home Depot at their other retailers. I had pneumonia, and when I could I went out to look. I had found one, but then decided not to get that because it was the SmartStrand, which I could just not see putting in after this experience. I want to get a wear dated nylon, or that type, for the replacement. I was told go ahead, and I looked when I could.
I kept in touch with Mohawk, letting them know my condition. I found three choices for replacement, and after weeks of trying to get a hold of people at Home Depot and Mohawk, Mohawk just told me that the three I picked were not going to be an option for me. I had picked Soledad Park, Ocean Shores, and I can't remember the third. 4 months later, and I cannot get Mohawk to approve what I want it replaced with. I am going to contact legal help. Will let you know what happens in the journey to get our carpet replaced.

We had a new home built in November 2013 and the local carpet company recommended this particular carpet to us. Once it was installed (at a price of $5412) and I vacuumed for the first time with a Hoover Platinum Series Upright Vacuum I couldn't push the vacuum across the carpet. Called Karastan and they recommended several different vacuums in November and I bought 4 of them. None of them worked. I finally called them back and they said buy an Oreck Magnesium ($400), which I did. This vacuum worked for about two months and then would automatically turn off when it got on this carpet. It also didn't work as well after the first month of using. I called Linda at Consumer Support at Karastan Mohawk at that time and she said file a complaint through the carpet dealer that installed it which I did.
Took the vacuum to our local Oreck dealer where it now sits being repaired-- maybe, since they said nothing was wrong with it. I have filed a claim with Karastan through the dealer that we purchased the carpet (this was 3-4 weeks ago). I heard yesterday from the carpet dealer that Karastan Mohawk was not going to do anything about it. I called the Customer Service Dept. and spoke with Linda this morning (8/15/14) and explained my dilemma and she said she would look into it. I have no idea when they will call me back. I have read 73 complaints about this carpet on Consumer Affairs website and everybody has had this trouble with vacuuming this carpet and other problems. Karastan Mohawk won't do anything to help them. This is not right and somebody needs to take action legally against this company for marketing this particular carpet and not standing behind it. At the moment I am out $5400 for the carpet, $400 for a vacuum that no longer works, and I can't vacuum the carpet with anything!
Another problem with this carpet is that every time I would vacuum lots of strands were pulled out of the carpet. I am not talking about the fuzz of new carpeting, but the actual threads of the carpet. The Oreck was the 5th vacuum I purchased for this carpet--all the others were returned and I got money back for those. It doesn't look like I am going to get anything back on this Oreck which I can't use anymore. I am so disgusted by this whole ordeal and I don't know where to turn. I am 72 years old, living on retirement and social security, living in a new house with carpet that is horrible and I can't even clean. HELP!

We spent $5,751.90 on our new Rockford Solid Maple floors and there was a rebate we were supposed to get. All of the proper paperwork and receipts were submitted as requested electronically. When I inquired (about 3 weeks later) of the status, no one responded. When I inquired again, I was told it was being processed. Great! It has been two months now and I still have not received the rebate or even a response from customer service as to when I can expect it. I even sent a message via Facebook and was told they would look into it. Clearly, no one is looking.
To make matters worse, our floor installation began and we got a call that it would be delayed over a week because there was a quality issue Mohawk had to fix, and a new batch had to be ordered. So far we have been happy with the completed floors, and I really hope we do not have quality issues down the road because Mohawk has terrible customer service; and if I cannot even get the rebate I met the requirements of, I cannot imagine having more quality control issues.

I had Mohawk Smart Strand installed in my home in 2009 because it would withstand pets. That is a total lie. Two weeks after installation, it started to come apart at the seams. The installer came out and tried to iron it together. That did not work. The installer came out several times to look at my carpet over a 2-year period. Finally, they said it was a warranty issue and they would contact Mohawk. Mohawk sent out the inspector who said it was caused by pet urine. I guess my dogs only pee on the seams. What a joke. I told the sales person that I had large dogs and it is not a major problem but sometimes accidents happen so I needed carpet that could withstand pet wear and tear. I have been told the warranty only counts for stains and smell. My carpet is not coming off the backing and Mohawk won't do a thing about it. I loved my carpet upon installation but can't stand it now. I have seen cheap apartment carpet hold up better than this. I now have over 3000 feet of ugly carpet in my home. It has rolls in it and is coming apart at the seams. I will not buy another product from Mohawk.

Mohawk Smartstrand silk carpet - Extremely disappointed with this carpet. We have discovered that this carpet cannot be used if you have a dog or cat. I have a small dog (pug) and his claws get caught in the soft looping of this carpet and the loops come undone. I'm constantly cutting the unraveled loops and tying the ends together. I'm also afraid to vacuum this carpet. From my experience the company Mohawk is not a good company to deal with. Buyer beware.

Lowe's of Myrtle Beach called yesterday with an apology and the news that they are giving us a 100% credit toward the purchase of new carpet. YES!
I learned much from this experience that I would like to share. If you are working with a big box store or a chain, do not give up at the store level. When they send out their inspector who may be defensive and hurried with you, have your typed complaint ready to give him with photos. Good photos are VERY IMPORTANT. Spend some time on it. (They don't ask for this, but it will help you and makes his job easier.) That way nothing gets overlooked or misunderstood. Make it clear and detailed with all your points in a row and explain how this problem has affected you. Ask for the name and email address of his boss and send the same thing to the operational office so they can't say that the file got lost. Always be respectful but firm. Our original claim was incomplete and was easily denied by Mohawk.
Give the operational office a few weeks to do their thing then follow-up. When you get the denial from the manufacturer, ask to have the copy sent to you so you can see the reason. It may surprise you or give you more ammunition to resubmit, which is what I did. Then call the corporate office for your store and ask for the phone number and email address of the best person to contact who can help resolve your issue at the executive level. Lowe's was very willing to give me this information. Send the same complaint with photos to them. It surprised me how accommodating the rep was at the top level and they responded in 2 business days. They did not want to lose my business. It makes the argument that maybe a large purchase at a big box store gives you more protection because you can work your way up to a resolution.
It appears that Mohawk is going to cooperate with Lowe's on this complaint, only because Lowe's applied more pressure to them on the resubmission and it came from the top level. The first submission should have been enough, but the system is set up to test you. As exhausting as it is, you have to play their own game and wear them down. The carpet remains terrible but I'll update my rating to 3 stars on Mohawk for caving in. Lowe's gets 5. Thanks, Lowe's!
Original Review: July 21, 2014
I was in the home improvement industry for 30 years and selected flooring for 100's of projects. I've never seen anything as horrible as SmartStrand. I even hesitate calling it "carpet" because it does not respond like any carpet I ever used. As one unhappy customer wrote after a loopy analysis by the Mohawk inspector: "It sounds as though our carpet exists in some mysterious domain outside the laws of physics. "Try another galaxy. My sentiments exactly".
We purchased SmartStrand/Fashion Forward from Lowe's of Myrtle Beach this year and I'm relieved we only did one room to start, although $900 for this disaster is still an insult. I've been on the Lowe's-Mohawk-Lowe's-Mohawk claim merry-go-round for 6 weeks. When I finally got through to Mohawk's office, the girl laughed at me and connected me to a recording that said, I "ought to try Mohawk's World Class Customer Service". Really? What planet is she on? And "please don't call us again because this is a dealer problem".
From the beginning it was obvious that Lowe's has a script and you are the loser. They don't want to fight Mohawk so they give you the long, painful letdown. You know, rude inspector takes photos, photos get lost, case gets lost, rep won't return calls. Lowe's blames Mohawk, Mohawk blames you. Phony lab test PROVES carpet is perfect, and then claim gets denied over some ridiculous excuse that has nothing to do with your defective product. I think we've all been there.
And warranties. What's that? Our decision to buy was based on the Lifetime/25-year promise that this was recommended for pets. So we buy for pets and then our claim is denied because we have pets. Does that sound kind of circular to you? There are 3 major problems with this carpet: UNRAVELS FOR NO REASON. Within a few weeks, over 50 loops popped up all over, even under the furniture. This product is not made for wear. Mohawk claims their phony lab test proves our dogs did it. How did they arrive at that? Do they have a hidden camera in the carpet? Our previous carpet with dogs was 20 years old and still looked great when we moved so I know it's not the pets.
UNSTABLE, UNEXPLAINED DISCOLORATION. The carpet sample at Lowe's was attractive and consistent but this is not what we got. The product looked acceptable for about an hour after installation and then it started displaying mysterious dark, greasy spots that enlarge over time. Other reviewers call them "dirty footprints" and "coffee stains". My term: The Oil Slick. It seems that the carpet reacts to air, sunlight or both. It looks like a black organism is morphing around the room inside the pattern. We were denied a technical bulletin before purchase and I would guess they don't want customers tipped off about the weird discoloration. Mohawk says it's called "Shading" and "Pooling" which are fancy words to make it sound NORMAL. No, it's defective and substandard.
UNCLEANABLE DISASTER. In 4 months, I've cleaned it several times but nothing works. Good quality carpet cleans in one pass but 8-10 passes will not release the dirt from the pattern. I've tried everything including various shampoos, soaking it, water only, pre-cleaning. Spot cleaning makes it worse and produces dirty concentric circles. I can get it about 90% clean for an afternoon but by the next day the dreaded oil slick reappears and the whole thing degrades again. It's very unstable. Other than occasional maintenance, your flooring should not be causing perpetual stress. We're embarrassed to let visitors near the bedroom. Where's the class action on this? Good Luck to all the Mohawk survivors.

We just had the Mohawk Smartstrand carpet installed in our two bedrooms (Dramatic Flair in Chrome) and, as the installers were installing the carpet, my husband and I had a huge pit in the bottom of our stomachs. But hoping that after a vacuum all would be okay - we patiently await for the installers to complete the job. After we vacuumed the carpet and then walked on it, our worst nightmares were confirmed. When you walk on this carpet, it looked like dirty footprints all over the floor. For such an expensive product, and after giving the large sample the once over before making our decision (we walked, sat and vacuumed it - and felt we had picked the carpet of our dreams). Well, it's a nightmare. We are waiting for the rep from Mohawk, as well as a rep from the carpet store where we purchased it, to come out later this week. We are completely dissatisfied and hope that their 30-day satisfaction policy is something they stand behind. Because we want our money back and will NOT buy their product to replace this mess. Unfortunately we can't get the time, nor the inconvenience of having to go through this, back. Stay tuned.

We had our SmartStrand carpet installed in Dec 2013. March 2014 our carpet developed a hole where the strands disappeared. The Company who installed it said they would make it right if their solution didn't work. We then had two areas where the strands pulled up. All these defects are in areas where there is no traffic walking on the carpet. The company we purchased it from has gone out of business and refuse to help. So since March we have been dealing with Mohawk which has been a nightmare to say the least, especially considering we thought purchasing Mohawk carpet we were buying a good quality carpet along with customer service. Boy, we were fooled.
As of today, 7/9/14, Mohawk has yet to send a representative out to look at our carpet and see the issues. They say there is nothing wrong with our carpet since it passed their tests. Well just because it passed your so-called tests doesn't mean there isn't something defective with this carpet. Strands just don't start to come up or totally out for no reason in non-traffic areas or non-seamed areas. It has been very stressful trying to get one of their representatives to come out to look at the problems. We have yet been able to put our living room back to normal waiting for a resolution to this problem. I expect poor customer service and quality from a not so well known company but this has been ridiculous from a well established company. I will never buy from Mohawk again. They are acting like the automobile industries making us jump through hoops to try and get any resolutions.

I purchased a Mohawk SmartStrand carpet in medium blue from Abbey carpeting a little less than a year ago (Lifetime stain and soil resistance that's built in, not sprayed on. This soft, naturally stain-resistant carpet is perfect for families with kids and pets). It was for just the bedroom and cost about $850 installed. When I was shopping, I told them that I was looking for something that would not show cat vomit since I have old cats that throw up a lot and I go on vacation a lot, so don't get to clean it up right away. Later I learned it has a warranty that EXPLICITLY excludes cat vomit!
I've used Oxi-clean, Resolve, a Bissell SpotBot carpet cleaner with Pet spot and odor formula on the stains and they STILL show up as darker areas on the rug. Also the areas that I've cleaned seems kind of tacky. The carpeting in my old house was 17 years old and we were always able to get rid of the cat vomit stains, so I'm rather amazed that something that Mohawk sells as good to use with pets is so miserable at doing the same. So, I waited a while to get back to Abbey and they looked up the warranty and said it explicitly excludes pet vomit (shouldn't they have KNOWN?), but that if I picked out something else, they'd talk to the manager about a deal.
Well, I went back and spent about an hour and a half picking something else out. Decided to steer clear of Mohawk products and try Shaw nylon carpeting rather than another type of synthetic since I'm assuming we had nylon in the old house. Anyway, the deal they gave me was $100 off (I'm reusing the padding). So I'm thinking, these people sold me something that was inappropriate. They are carpeting specialists who apparently don't know their products, and I can't believe that they're still trying to make a profit on me the second time around. In contrast, with the carpet sample that I picked up (SHAW, nylon), it is quite easy to remove the cat vomit without staining. So, I suggest steering clear of Mohawk and Abbey carpeting!

Since purchasing our Mohawk "corn" carpeting 4 years ago at a cost of more than $5,000 we have had problems with the carpet producing ever-growing peaks or bumps in the surface, several of the bumps appearing and running along at the precise intersection of the Mohawk padding. Our dealer, SNC Flooring of Mountain Home, AR has been very cooperative and sent a crew out to re-stretch our carpet a few months ago. Unfortunately, the problems have not only returned, they have worsened.
SNC Carpeting reported our dilemma to their Mohawk representative and was successful in having Mohawk send an inspector to our home approximately two months ago. After pulling out strands of fiber, taking numerous photographs and doing what appeared to be as much of an examination as he could do without actually rolling the carpet back to inspect the back side, the inspector requested a sample of the carpet for sending to Mohawk's labs for testing. We made an error in giving him a piece of the carpet that had been left over from the original installation; one that had never been used and was unlikely to show any evidence of the problem we are facing.
Now, more than two months after the inspection, the peaks in our carpeting continue to appear and grow while Mohawk, a major firm whose management should be more concerned at quality problems, is still delaying an answer as to replacement of a product that is clearly defective. Meanwhile, our Mohawk dealer has told us of a similar problem with another of his local customers, one that Mohawk has agreed to replace. In a somewhat alarming side to this story, our medical advisers have suggested that what we have thought of as particularly strong bouts of watery eyes, sneezing and coughing due to "allergies," could in fact be the result of inhaling dust from the carpeting; dust that covers our furnishings and is a source of extra work for my wife. Further, our furnace/air filters must be removed and replaced at ever-increasing frequency.
I wish to emphasize that the dealer in this case has attempted to assist us in exercising our warranty rights and has repeatedly appealed to Mohawk to do the right thing and replace our carpeting. To date, they have only suggested another re-stretching; meaning we must for the second time remove all furnishings from a large area of our home, a job my wife and I see as an added and useless expense. Having gone through one re-stretching cycle with very poor results, our ages I'm 82, wife is 76, simply won't allow the extra work a fruitless, second re-stretching entails. We now await Mohawk's final decision, one that they continue to delay in spite of the efforts of the dealer involved. If Mohawk responds with a sensible and acceptable solution, I will be pleased to give them the credit due them, and report on this forum. If they do not, we have every intention of seeking assistance from our local and Chicago attorneys.

We recently had this Mohawk carpet installed in three large rooms of our house. Immediately upon installation, we were unable to vacuum it with a Dyson Animal vacuum cleaner or a Hoover Wind Tunnel (sorry - don't know the model)! It was nearly impossible for my wife to push and pull the vacuum and I could only do a room at a time - as it was quite a workout! Probably wasn't good for either the carpet or the vacuums...
Through research on the Mohawk website, my wife found a list of approved vacuum cleaners. We selected the moderately priced Hoover WindTunnel T-Series Rewind Plus Bagless Upright, UH70120 from their list and ordered it from Amazon (and actually got a pretty good price). Fortunately, when set on the highest setting my wife is now able to vacuum this carpet with reasonable effort. In general, we have been satisfied with this product but are very disappointed that the carpet retailer was ignorant of this issue and did not warn us that we might have to purchase an additional vacuum cleaner. It also appears that Mohawk as a company, has not be overtly forthright in their dealings regarding this matter either.

I bought a Mohawk carpet from Home Depot in Dec. 2010. Since the day I bought it, it has continued to shed. Every few days, I dust my house and there is beige dust (matching my carpet color) everywhere. I hate to think what I've been breathing. Also, after every time I vacuum, about a dozen of the carpet fibers pull out and extend about 3/4 of an inch above the rest of the carpeting. I started collecting the pulled out fibers and after several months I have a sandwich size baggie half filled. I have about 600 square feet carpeted. I figured after time it would stop but after a little over 3 years, it continues to shed.
So, I called Home Depot and they claim that since I have not had my carpet professionally cleaned every year, the warranty is invalid. What does professional cleaning have to do with this carpet shedding problem? If anything, water on the carpet from cleaning would make more fibers pull out. In addition, my carpet is perfectly clean as I never wear or allow shoes in the house and I live alone with no pets. How can the carpet company void their warranty for something that is unrelated to my claim!

They finally sent an inspector out a couple of weeks ago. Anyway my problem is that I have big bare spots on the risers on my steps, not the wear areas. They finally denied my claim today, April 4, 2014. The reason is that their warranty doesn't cover stairs. Today is the first time I have ever heard of that. It sounds really ridiculous. Most people I know have carpeted stairs. Their consumer affairs department is absolutely pathetic. I have never dealt with such an incompetent and unfriendly company. I called Empire and got a big run-around. Now that I have read all the problems others have had, I guess no one will honor the 25 yr. warranty. They could offer a 50 yr. warranty since they don't intend to honor it anyway. We are in our 70's and took $5000 out of our savings to pay for this awful carpet that looks 20 yrs. old. However, when the carpet came to my house it did not match either. It looked old and faded (not "used" but dull) and I hated the color. I filed a complaint through the company I purchased it from. We sent in the two samples and then a piece of the carpet I received. Mohawk agreed that the carpet they sent me did not match the sample. However they said they were not able to sell me the color in the sample because they don't make it anymore?? (Yet they are still sending samples out??) And then they offered me $379 to keep the carpet (that I paid $1732 for, including padding and installation). I refused.
The store I bought the carpet from gave me a refund and took the carpet/padding out and is now in a dispute with Mohawk. In the meantime I now have bare wood floors until I buy new carpet. I was told the fibers will stop coming out. The carpet is now 3 years old. The carpet now has holes in it where the fibers have come out. I filed a claim on the floor.
Add insult to injury. You want to offer us 80% replacement cost of the carpet stating the carpet is 4 years old. You are wrong, it is 3 years old. You state depreciation for wearability, what about the 25 year warranty for wearability. Then you tell me you don't want to cover labor. How dare you. This is unacceptable. I purchased carpet for my bedrooms also and those carpets are starting to do the same thing. This is the worst carpet I have ever purchased in my life. In October 2013 I was looking for a new carpet and was quite impressed with the Mohawk Smartstrand, a new revolutionary fiber. I bought model "Organic Luxury" also known as "Intelligent Style". I was completely stunned at its look once installed: it looked and felt beautiful as long as you did not walk on it; there it was crushed and looked two colored, like wet grass and just shabby and worn. After doing research and going back to the store where I purchased it I was told Mohawk has a 60 day customer satisfaction guarantee and if I exchanged it for a style called "Frieze" it would minimize footprints. Supposedly "Frieze" has special fibers where you step on the side rather than the top which supposedly have elasticity to bounce back.
In December 2012 I had style " Prestigious Manner" installed and could tell right after the installation it looked just as awful as the 1st one. I could not vacuum either one of them with a Hoover or Dirt Devil; the vacuum issue was never disclosed, but I do see now how many people complain about it. I contacted Mohawk and received an e-mail from a customer service rep stating he definitely wanted to talk to me about my experience. Never heard back from him. Then I received a generic e-mailed response how very sorry they were, but what I see are "Characteristics of cut pile carpets and no defects".
Since then I have done a lot of research and if I would have known what I know now I would have bought an old fashioned, well proven nylon carpet or stayed with my 16 year old carpet that looked better than the new one. This was the biggest financial mistake in my life and I am extremely disappointed. I just spent another $155.00 to buy a new vacuum cleaner Bissell 89Q9 which works - hope this helps anyone reading this review. The carpet sure feels very soft (but I don't care as I don't sleep on it) and I am sure it is easy to clean (but I don't spill anything). I certainly would never ever buy another Smartstrand.

Upon returning to our home, we again began to have swollen and irritated eyes, blisters in the nostrils, difficulty breathing, and sustained elevated heart rate. (120-140 bpm) My husband was admitted to St. Luke's Hospital due to his heart rate and difficulty breathing. He has a complete heart screening each year and has always been assured that his heart is very healthy, so we were confused as to why he was having these problems.
After spending one night in the hospital, he began to be able to breathe normally, his heart rate went back to normal, and tests showed that his heart was indeed healthy. We returned home, and that very night the problems returned. That is when we figured out that it had to be the carpet. We stayed out of our home for two weeks until Home Depot removed the carpet. During this time, my husband did not experience any cardiac/respiratory problems. After the carpet was removed, he has been able to stay in our home without any further problems. My swollen eyes and blistered nostrils have also healed. We have not been compensated for the medical bills, duct cleaning, house sanitizing, dry cleaning of clothes/linens, or food/lodging costs incurred due to this very unsafe product.

My husband first vacuumed on the middle setting and had told me that it was a totally exhausting experience. I didn't believe him so I gave it a try and was surprised how hard it was to move the vacuum even after changing the setting to the highest dial. After reading the many bad comments regarding the Smartstrand Silk Carpet, we are going to take advantage of the 30 day guarantee and have this carpet removed A.S.A.P. I guess this story is to be continued and we can let you know if Mohawk will stand by their product in replacing the carpet with something more appealing.

Had Mohawk SmartStrand carpet installed in my whole house minus 2 bedrooms in November 2013 at a cost of over $5000.00. I am very disappointed in the appearance of this carpet, it shows each footstep including cat paws (seriously), not to mention the excessive vacuum cleaner striping. I have to use a soft broom after vacuuming to eliminate some of the stripes. Most of the time the carpet looks like a pebbly beach. The footprint issue is excessive!!!! I am already beginning to see traffic patterns and I am a senior citizen who lives alone with two cats.
The vacuum cleaner problem is an issue all by itself. No way can I use my old vacuum, I would have to go to the emergency room for exhaustion, it's like the vacuum sucks into the carpet and won't let go. Don't be fooled by the list of workable vacuums displayed online and in the store, mine was on that list. I am now vacuuming my house with a $40 Eureka, it works, but how long will it last? I have large areas to clean. The carpet is still shedding an enormous amount of fiber, almost scary to see how much.
I had written a complaint on the Mohawk website and received a generic answer from Consumer Affairs. I was a few weeks past the 30-day guarantee period. If you are considering SmartStrand carpet, please think it over, check out all the reviews and pay attention to them. The one thing I do like about this carpet is the soft feel.

We purchased our Mohawk SmartStrand Silk in August of 2012. As of this date (January 5, 2014) our carpet looks worse than a 20 year old cheap carpet. We were to have an inspector come in to look at the carpet this Thursday, but I got a call today that Mohawk has cancelled the inspection and they want a piece of our carpet to have tested (really??). It was suggested we have a piece of carpeting cut out of the closet area (2 feet square) because we did not have a piece "left over' from the installation. Why do I have to cut out a piece of carpeting that I paid almost $4,000 dollars for, has a 25 year warranty (which I know will not be honored, judging from the many reviews I've read) and have it sent to Mohawk for "testing"??
It looks to me like I will be spending money on a lawyer, and will spread the word far and wide regarding this company. I'm hoping the company I bought the carpet from will be of some help, as they are very reputable. I have had various carpets over the years (I'm over 60) and have never, ever seen a carpet look as this one does. All of the fibers are clumped in rows, and I'm sure they will blame my vacuum, even though it is a Hoover Wind Tunnel that was on their approved list. According to their instructions, you should always vacuum in different directions each time you vacuum, which in some areas is impossible. What a waste of money, and I can't afford to remove this carpet and buy another brand that hopefully would be more reputable and stand up to regular wear and tear.

I had to get used to vacuuming but after I raised the level of my adjustable vacuum it was no issue. My family and my dogs will only lay on my new carpet!! Love it and would recommend to anyone!!!

Purchased smart strand carpet and smart pad. I had it professionally cleaned two times in 18 month period of time. It would not release the dirt anywhere you walk and the stains which were coke, tea, and coffee and a small spot of ketchup would not come out after several cleanings, two professional. The carpet was cleaned per Mohawk instructions. It has a 25 year warranty against stains and wear. It is very early in the time of that warranty. I have never had carpet that wouldn't come clean.
They sent out an inspector to look at the carpet and take pictures. Now two month later, they informed Lowe’s where I purchased the carpet, that they denied the claim. This is unacceptable. There are only two retired people in my house and no pets and my carpet won't come clean. Would never buy Mohawk Carpet again. Poor Company that won't stand up to their warranty. I am very unhappy with both the carpet and Mohawk. The story is not going to end here.

Word of advice - be prepared to TEST YOUR VACUUM & possibly buy a new vacuum cleaner if you purchase the new Mohawk ultra soft carpets. Mohawk will not help you.
I bought Alexander Smith Softique short pile carpet for my house from a reputable carpet store. Little did I know that my existing vacuum cleaner (a Eureka canister) nor a new vacuum (Shark Navigator Upright) I bought would work on this carpet. The vacuum just doesn't move on this soft carpet - you nearly break your arm trying to push it. So I called the dealer who was not aware of this issue and asked that Mohawk send a rep to my home. He contacted Mohawk & they refused to send a rep to my home. Mohawk just said that I needed to buy a new vacuum from their approved list. So, my carpet dealer created 4' square carpet boards & worked with the vacuum store to test numerous vacuums on it. Even the Mohawk recommended vacuums were very hard to use on this carpet.
Finally, after two months of working with the carpet dealer, we found that the SEBO canister K3 works very well on this carpet. It has an adjustable power brush height (which needs to be at the highest setting) and an adjustable suction setting.
My carpet dealer now has a sign next to this Mohawk carpet warning customers that their existing vacuum may not work on it. I think it is ridiculous that Mohawk produces a carpet that normal vacuums cannot clean. Even their "recommended" vacuums don't work. After seeing the other reviews on Mohawk carpet and vacuum problems, I regret having purchased this carpet. Fortunately, my carpet dealer worked with me to resolve the issue.

I work for a flooring company and we sell Mohawk flooring. In the last few months we have had several claims, all backing coming apart and all claims have been denied, because of any excuse they can come up with usually and installer error. I might add the very same installers we use with other companies amazingly had no problems. Everyone blames the company that actually sold them the flooring but here's the problem. When a claim is denied, our hands are tied. We're not the ones that deny the claims. Yet believe me they're not the ones that get yelled at, we are. Lately I have been pushing some of the smaller companies. These are some you might actually be interested in. Dream Weaver, American Berber, Mathew's and Parlo. These companies are more reasonably priced and actually warranty their claims.

I purchased a large amount of Flamboyant color Sugar (white) Carpet from Rite Rug in Columbus, Ohio. Also purchased Mohawk Pad for the carpet. After a very short time, the carpet began to turn pinkish in color. I contacted Rite Rug and they passed the responsibility on to The Mohawk Carpet Manufacturer. Rite Rug told me there was nothing they could do. I have since found out the pad was discontinued by Rite Rug. I recently purchased new carpet for the bedroom and had the old Mohawk carpet and pad removed.
Removing the pinkish/white carpet revealed the pad to have turned a dark shade on top. It also had pink flakes of color in the texture of the pad. The pad next to the floor was just like new - no dark shade! The pad has caused The Mohawk Flamboyant Sugar/White Carpet to turn pinkish in color. I have this all over the great room, upstairs staircase, balcony, loft room and two bedrooms. Rite Rug called today and chose to pick up a sample of the carpet and padding to send to the Mohawk Carpet Manufacturer to be analyzed. I would be very careful of purchasing Mohawk Carpet.

Adam from Flooring 2Day looked at it, had a representative from Mohawk, the manufacturer, look at it and although they admitted it looks bad, they refuse to honor any warranty. Adam blames the manufacturer for everything and says they have no responsibility even for recommending the product. He admitted they no longer sell it or recommend this carpet.
We had it cleaned by Mohawk's recommended cleaning company with no change in the dirty looking traffic patterns. The carpet cleaning company thought it looked older and more worn than an 11-year-old carpet he had just cleaned. We spent over $5,000 for a carpet that looks old and worn out after 1 year. I had a new carpet installed just barely a year ago on 6/11/12. Ever since it was installed, I have been vacuuming up so much fiber that I have to empty my vacuum 2-3 times before I can finish vacuuming. I called the place I bought this from, which was Carpet & Door Mart, and told the owner what was happening, but he said that was normal. Well, after 2-3 months and it's still continuing, plus now it is starting to pick, I called him back and told him this was not normal and that I wanted him to come out and take a look at it. He said he would, but it took another two months and I had to call him again.
When he came out, he said that it looked fine to him. I told him that I had taken pictures and sent them to my uncle, who used to own a flooring business for 50 years, and that when he saw it, he told me that it was bad dye and it should have been replaced immediately. The owner told me he would get in touch with the representative and see what he could do. That has been about three months ago and nothing has been done yet.
I paid a lot for this carpet and all I want is for it to be replaced. On top of everything else, it is now starting to ripple as if it needs to be stretched. It looks worse than the carpet in my bedroom, which is almost 20 years old. If I don't get something done soon, I am just going to take them to court and let it be handled that way.

Early October 2012, my parents had their carpet replaced throughout the house. I came to Georgia from Virginia to pack up their items and remain to unpack afterwards and to be there during the process to assist my parents as they are in their mid 80’s. MDR Construction Svcs., Locust Grove, GA was the middle man and worked with Mohawk to purchase the carpet and have it installed. The carpet continued to leave balls of carpet all over the living room and any area walked on.
My parents reported this to MDR rep and he stated some pilling was expected and to let him know if it continued. I went to Georgia in Feb. 2013 and found that the carpet was still pilling greatly and looked horrible in spite of it being vacuumed 2 times a week by a lady that comes in to assist my mother with bath/dressing, as she is not able to do on her own. On Feb. 20, 2013, David from MDR came back out and agreed that it should have stopped by this time and took a sample of the carpet and on behalf of my parents submitted a claim with Mohawk Industries in Feb.
On March 11, 2013, Mohawk Industries submitted a letter from Debbie ** stating that since it was spun yarn, it would shed and that with proper vacuuming most shedding gradually disappears within first year and they closed the claim. I contacted Mohawk on Mar. 13 and they refused to talk to me or the consumer. David, MDR spoke to them again and they agreed to test the carpet which they say they did and that it was fine. I did a 3 way call today, Apr. 8, 2013 to request someone go look at it but was not able to speak to Doyle ** who was on the other line. I do not feel confident that they will even talk to me or send someone to see for themselves.
As I stated, my parents are in their 80’s. We certainly are not looking for free carpet or the hassle of having to pack and unpack everything yet again as that is a nightmare that does require that I go to GA from VA to take care of, but the fact that Mohawk will not even speak to me or go out and see for themselves is unconscionable. The carpet looks horrible, and I sat on the floor and picked out pieces several times during my visit to no avail. No vacuum cleaner will pull the pieces up as they are attached and have to be physically pulled out by hand. I then vacuumed after picking each piece up and it doesn't even look vacuumed.
Please assist me with having some sort of justice for my parents. It is embarrassing to have people walk in and see that dirty looking, pieces of carpet debris everywhere. There is no way for me to describe how ugly it is. I am not currently there to send photos of how bad it looks. David from MDR stated that he totally agrees that he has never seen carpet do this and he works with carpet all the time. He is trying to get Mohawk to assist but they have given him a stone wall also. I checked on shedding from spun yarn and the article said that it should diminish significantly within the first 3-6 months. Theirs has not and Mohawk won't even come see for themselves. Please help. Thank you.

We purchased Mohawk carpet 3/03/13 and after installation, I found that I could not vacuum it with my Hoover or Eureka vacuum. The carpet is shedding so bad & we have allergies and this carpet is all over my daughter and it's making me sick. We just installed it 48 hrs ago. We are breathing in fibers that are not safe and the carpet looks like crap with big hair balls everywhere. My clothes are covered in green hair/fibers. My niece is 3 yrs old and we can't let her play on the carpet. I called Mohawk today for the first time. The lady said that it could take 6 months to a year to stop shedding and that Menards should have told us that but they didn't! And there is no warning label like she told me. Even Joe from Menards said there's no warning label.
So I called Mohawk back again after calling Menards for the second time. The rude lady told me this time that there is a 30-day replacement warranty, but she wasn't sure Mohawk would accept the warranty. I called Menards again, talked to Joe, the asst. mgr., and he told me that I could fill out a claim ticket but he was not sure what will happen. All I know is that I can't live with this carpet in my home and why do I have to wait to return it? If there's a 30-day warranty, I should be able to take it back to the store, period! Why do we have to fill out a claim and wait on Mohawk to decide if we can return it when Menards sold it to me?!

The carpet in my home is three years old. As I was vacuuming a few months ago (December to be exact), the Berber carpet snagged and ripped up an entire long thread. I do not have pets, nor have I ever walked on the carpet with heels. Therefore, the snag was due to a manufacturing defect. My carpet installer just informed me (after a very lengthy claims process that they had to handle because nobody in Mohawk's Claims department would help me) that Mohawk Flooring will honor the five-year warranty. However, it does not cover labor and, to make matters worse, it's prorated! My total compensation? $34.10! I purchased a medium-quality carpet by Mohawk. It wasn't cheap, but not their most expensive either. It looked great at first. After a few months, I started getting large ripples in every room, especially near the wood trim. The store where I purchased it has come out three times over the years to re-stretch the carpet. They did not charge me for this because it shouldn't have happened. Now it's rippling again. The problems started shortly after purchasing and I've put up with this for over 10 years, because I did not want to have to buy new carpet again. On top of the rippling, the shedding is just terrible. I fill a vacuum bag from vacuuming just two times! No carpet should shed this much after 10 years.
When my grandkids play on the floor, their clothes are covered in carpet fibers. The kids call my carpet hairy. It's really awful. Mohawk would do absolutely nothing about this. In fact, after I spoke with a sales rep by phone, he said he would get right back to me. I never heard from him again. The store where I bought the carpet said they no longer carry Mohawk (I wonder why?), so they won't do anything for me except stretch it when needed. I live alone, have no animals, and my grandkids visit only a couple of times a month. It's the worst carpet I've ever had. I have a top of the line Electrolux vacuum and was never told I couldn't use it on this carpet. It worked fine on my carpet in my previous house.
Do not buy Mohawk carpet. I'll be replacing mine soon and will be very careful about buying from a different company. I'm including a photo of my vacuum cleaner showing all the fibers on it. This happens every single time I vacuum.

We had our upstairs carpeted in the fall of 2011 with Mohawk carpet, 3 bedrooms, and an area that is just outside the bedrooms. The carpet that was there was 11 years old and had started to show wear. It is just my wife and I and a small dog that live here. This new carpet was thick plush when it was first installed and it was beautiful.
After 6 months, I contacted Jenny ** at The Floor Center where we bought it and told her that there is a worn-looking track coming out of our walk-in closet and also, around the front of our dresser that leads into the master bathroom. She said she would have the people who installed the carpet take a look at it but nobody ever came out. I contacted The Floor Center again and, this time, they sent a carpet inspector out who, when she showed up, did not present me with a business card and was very quick to tell me that our $1,100 Oreck vacuum cleaner was not a good vacuum cleaner. Really?
The report came back that we do not have premature wear and that Mohawk was going to do nothing about the very obvious wear area. Now, 9 months have passed and, when the results came back, I told Jenny from The Floor Center that this answer was unacceptable and, for what we paid for this carpet, I should not be seeing any wear at all. She then said that she would hire another independent carpet inspector to get a "final" answer on this worn area. Of course, he immediately went after our vacuum cleaner just like the first inspector. He also did not show an ID. For all I know, he could have been someone's grandpa! This is just plain crap. Our vacuum does a fabulous job, the carpet is the issue here. This 1-year-old carpet shows more wear than our 11-year-old carpet did.
I will never buy Mohawk carpet or do business with The Floor Center in Woodbury and Eden Prairie, Minnesota again. I feel I bought the carpet from them, not Mohawk, and they should stand behind their customer and they should battle with Mohawk. We are going to go picket their stores as soon as the weather warms up. I am also going to take out buyer beware ads in the local papers in their store's suburbs.
To think I had 2 quotes from the Big Box Stores and went with the little guy, I even paid more! I thought that they would stand behind me more than a box store, but it was not the case! This is ridiculous. I want Mohawk to replace this defective, worn, ** carpet with something that will last longer than 6 months without showing wear.

In February 2012, I had a Mohawk "Grand Prix" Polyester carpet installed throughout my home. First vacuuming by the installers produced so much fuzz it filled four 39 gallon yard bags! The fuzz produced was so heavy the installers had to remove the flow restrictor from the vacuum or it would plug up and stop working. I asked if it was normal and was told the new carpet did shed. Subsequent vacuuming required the removal of the flow restrictor to keep the vacuum from clogging and continued producing excessive fuzz. In addition to the fuzz, each vacuuming produced large amounts of fine gray powder from within the carpet. Each vacuuming continued to produce fuzz and large amounts of the mysterious fine gray powder. New carpet should not do this!
After two months, the characteristics of the carpet changed. Instead of plush and resilient, the carpet became flat. After vacuuming, every step left a footprint because there was not enough body in the stripped fibers to bounce back. In no time, the carpet looked pocked and unsightly. Further, as the carpet became further depleted, excessive variations in tufting, shearing and j-cut tifts along with off-shading became apparent. In addition, shortly after installation, dark spots began to appear in the carpet that could not be removed. Our home has only my wife and myself living in it and very few guests. All of us remove our shoes before entering our home, so these spots did not come from us. There were obviously contaminants in the bottom of the carpet when it was installed that came to the surface after installation in my home.
In August 2012, I notified my carpet supplier of the defects. He told me that Mohawk would schedule a certified carpet inspector to inspect my carpet. After one month of stonewalling, I informed my supplier I would contact the Better Business Bureau unless they stopped stonewalling me. In September, my carpet was finally inspected. My claim was denied. After telling my supplier I would exercise legal remedies if they did not replace my carpet, he said that if an independent certified carpet inspector found the carpet to be defective, Mohawk would replace the carpet and reimburse my expenses for the carpet inspector. I did retain one, and he found the carpet to be defective.
After forwarding my carpet inspector's report to my supplier and Mohawk, I continued to be stonewalled. In November, I retained a lawyer to file a lawsuit. Mohawk and my supplier continued stonewalling me until they were served lawsuit summonses. Mohawk, then, agreed to replace the carpet but gave me only two weeks to complete the replacement (during the Christmas/New Year holiday). My legal counsel contacted the parties and convinced them to refund me all my expenses instead of facing a judge. Had I not retained legal counsel and filed a lawsuit, I am convinced Mohawk would never have honored their warranty. Note: Mohawk Carpet is a huge corporation that has been in business for 100 years, yet they have no record with the Better Business Bureau. How is that possible? Draw your own conclusions.

I purchased Mohawk SmartStrand carpet. After installation, I found that I could not vacuum it with my Dyson vacuum. Store knew I had a Dyson and never told me it would not work. When I looked in the booklet that I got after my purchase, it said one of the vacuums to use was a Hoover Wind Tunnel. The store never told me that I would have to buy a new vacuum. The booklet said Hoover Wind Tunnel, so I bought a Hoover Wind Tunnel from Amazon and it did not work. When I called the store, they contacted Mohawk and then started telling me to adjust fan speed and beater bar. I'm not a mechanic and don't know how to adjust fan speed; beater bar was as high as it could be. I was furious.
This time, Mohawk gave them a sheet with certain model numbers I could purchase. My second vacuum purchase was a $100 Hoover Wind Tunnel because it was on the list. The nice $300 Hoover Wind Tunnel I had purchased wouldn't work. The cheaper one doesn't vacuum as well, but it is on the approved list. Apparently, if you use the wrong vacuum, you will fray the carpet. So I had to keep the cheap vacuum. Mohawk said I could use the 30-day replacement warranty and get a different carpet, but I would have to pay the $850 labor. I wanted them and the store to split it with me, but no one would help me in any way. I don't think I should have to pay the labor charges when I was not informed that I had to buy a special vacuum.
My husband didn't think the installed carpet was as thick as the samples that were supplied at purchase and we also found a frayed spot on the carpet (in a room that has only had the approved vacuum used on it). So in the middle of November, we tried to file a claim with the store and to date, Mohawk won't even accept the claim and have an inspector come out. Since the first thing I told them about was the thickness, they want a sample sent in. They are completely ignoring the imperfection. I cannot express enough how completely uncaring and devoid of any type of customer service this company is. Our store is no better in helping us.
As I write this, I really am in utter disbelief at the lack of customer service of this company. I tried to contact the district manager for Mohawk, but he got mad at the sales rep and the store for giving me his number. Buyer beware. I called my store today and they are still waiting for Mohawk to give me a complaint number. The lack of integrity is unbelievable! I had a bad experience with Mohawk back in the 90's when I purchased a black carpet pad, which seemed to leach into the carpet. I was told then that the black on my carpet was air filtration, not the pad. I swore then I would never buy Mohawk again and I did anyway. Shame on me. I have to buy carpeting for our basement stairs and rest assured it will not be Mohawk.

Never ever consider buying any carpet made from Dupont Sorona, Smart Strand, or Triexta fiber from Mohawk industries. They advertise this as the carpet a rhino lived on for weeks and that came out perfectly clean with ordinary steam cleaning. I spent over $8000 on high-end Karastan carpet made of Triexta fiber less than two years ago. I was foolish enough to believe that I could walk on my carpet. I vacuum regularly and have had it professionally cleaned, and it looks great, except where I walk, in stocking feet no less. The tan carpet is grayish color where I walk and looks awful. I called the place where I purchased the carpet and complained about soil that did not come out and color change because the warranty said that soil and stains were covered for 25 years. They immediately filed a claim with Mohawk.
The manufacturer sent out an inspector, and he said it looked bad and then filed a report saying it was normal pile layover at a pivot point. All he did was look through a magnifying glass and do a pH test. Mohawk denied claim. I then spent $500 on an independent carpet inspector. His pictures showed excessively soiled carpet fibers, but he essentially blamed it on the carpet cleaners, even though he contacted them and they denied using any unapproved products. These are the same carpet cleaners that kept my previous carpets clean for 10-15 years, and they were trying to remove soil that simply won't come up. Second claim denied.
I am now stuck with ugly, stained carpet and a company that simply won't honor its warranty. They just say "No, not going to honor it. Not a manufacturing defect." I am one furious consumer, and I want everyone to know that this is not a company that is reputable and they will not honor their warranties. Just don't buy it! This Mohawk carpet is the worst! We had just bought our first home and put in $4000 worth of Mohawk carpet. We were told at Lowe's that this is a really good carpet. It looked nice there and felt nice as well. Their sign said that it was tough enough for kids, which was good because we have two boys and it was pet friendly and we have a dog. It was also supposed to not show stains which we wanted! Lowe's sold us on this carpet. We had it installed about 1 month after we moved in to our house on October 13th, 2011. So in November, we had our new carpet and it seemed really nice.
It was around March when we realized we were getting a bald spot right in the middle of our living room. All the carpet strains kept coming out. We contacted Lowe's immediately and they filed a claim with the company. The company sent out an independent inspector to look at it and write a report. The company denied our claim stating it was related to our carpet cleaner and our dog. We had a name brand carpet cleaner, Bissell, and our dog never messed with the carpet. It ended up that Lowe's paid for part of our carpet and the company ended up paying for the rest after Lowe's kept on them for a good while.
We had the new carpet installed which was the same kind of carpet. This was probably around May that it was installed. Within 1 month, we began to see our seams coming apart. So, I called the installers and they came to fix them; however, it ended up being the carpet coming apart from the bottom of the carpet, the matting I guess. So, we filed yet another claim. Once again, the company has denied our claim. Lowe's said there is nothing else they can do and that they will give us a discount off a new flooring if we wish.
I am now stuck with a ** carpet from a company that does not stand behind their warranty! My carpet looks dirty and worn only after a few months and it's all coming apart. I paid $4000 for this and it lasted less than one year! I have two kids and do not have money to replace $4000 worth of flooring after a year. This company is horrible and I wish I would have never bought their carpet! I am a mother just trying to provide a nice home for my children and companies like Mohawk don't care!! The problem is, no one ever mentioned this to me until I complained. Six weeks after the carpet was installed and I had complained, they then gave me a booklet from Mohawk on Carpet Care telling me what vacuum will work well. I'm supposed to buy a new vacuum? I don't think so. I contacted my Legal Shield attorney and they are writing a letter on my behalf.

We moved into our new house in 2005. Builder had a Mohawk carpet installed throughout by San Joaquin Carpet of Bakersfield CA. Within a month, the carpet bucked up in the dining room, family room and in the hall way. San Joaquin Carpet sent a carpet layer three times to get the carpet to lay down - never mentioned re-stretching as an option - maybe they were too incompetent to know! After a lot of ironing, redoing connections, they got it laid but only it lasted a few months. The bucked up sections were minor but continued to rise higher. We tried to ignore it but a few months ago the bucked up areas have risen to as much as 1-1/2 inches.
We have had several houses and several carpets but never had one that failed this badly. Talking with a local carpet store, they told me that the backing on Mohawk carpets are substandard and fail frequently requiring re-stretching on pretty much an annual basis. Of course, the most logical answer is to replace it with a non-Mohawk carpet or with tile/wood flooring.
Our advice - never buy any carpet from Mohawk. A class action suit is needed considering the widespread nature of this problem. It is unbelievable that this carpet is still on the market and people are getting bilked out of their hard earned dollars. The carpet is not cheap and sold as quality carpet which it is not! Federal Consumer Affairs, where are you when it is obvious that a Federal lawsuit is appropriate that leads to full replacement of this junk carpeting?
Updated on 07/15/2015: With no help from Mohawk or the original retailer for replacing the carpet, we paid $150 for the retailer to send out couple of gents to "re-stretch" our carpet in an effort to take out the 1 1/2 to 2 inch (grew a bit) ridges from our living room and dining room carpet. The re-stretching helped some. We now only have a 1/4 to 1/2 inch ridges that look like the carpet was folded at those locations instead of rolled. We have also developed bunching at the fringes of the carpet that is quite noticeable. One of our 3 bedrooms now has a 1/2 to 3/4" ridge that has developed. Of course Mohawk won't entertain a discussion about replacement and neither will the retail store.
I have noticed numerous new complaints filed on this website concerning Mohawk carpet and it is obvious that they did not look at this website before purchasing the junk carpeting that Mohawk sells. I suspect that there are probably thousands of dissatisfied Mohawk carpeting customers yet the Federal Consumer Affairs has so far failed to investigate Mohawk and the junk they are selling the public. Mohawk needs to be shut down based on the complaints on this website alone. Word to the wise for those who are smart enough to view this complaint website before buying: If you buy Mohawk product, you will soon be here posting your complaint. NEVER purchase any product with the Mohawk brand name. NEVER!

I purchased top-of-the-line Mohawk Carpet 100 percent Everstrand Xtrasoft polyester. Low-end carpet may be 16 to 24 ounces face weight. I paid for 80-ounce face weight and a super dense 4,186. Twice, Mohawk shipped rolls of carpet half that density and quality and the wrong color. Mohawk did their own "in-house" analysis and concluded the crummy carpet was within their "tolerances" and won't budge. I cannot occupy my home because it has the pad down and you cannot walk on carpet pad or you will tear it. I kept my original Mohawk sample board and pieces from each roll I did not accept. Help!

I had Mohawk All Star/Summit installed in my new 2011 home. I live alone and do not wear shoes indoors. Within months, I started to notice wear marks on the steps. Not long after, there were wear marks in the hall between the bedrooms and the bath. The builder contacted the flooring store that supplied and installed it. They sent an "inspector.” He said, “Maybe they need to be cleaned?” I protested because the carpet was only six months old. The builder sent their handyman over to clean the steps. He used a Hoover steam cleaner. When done, the waste water was not dirty. The fibers returned to normal for a few days and then matted back down. I am at a stalemate with the builder, carpet store and Mohawk.

We chose a rather expensive Mohawk frieze carpet to replace our older 12-year builder installed carpet. With the first vacuuming, we had to stop and replace the bag several times because of the amount of loose fiber coming up from the carpet. When you would rub your hand over a non-vacuumed part, it just floated with loose fiber. Then within the first weeks, we started to notice matting. In places, it matted down to look like a felt pad. Within the year, we contacted Mohawk and they sent out an inspector who said that it was our fault because of our vacuum. This was a highly rated Sears vacuum that we had used successfully on our old carpet.
Repeated attempts to contact Mohawk have only resulted in their saying that it is not their responsibility, it is the responsibility of the yarn maker. Well, the yarn maker said that the carpet company is to tell their suppliers not to use a beater bar on the carpet. No one at the local dealer has ever heard such a thing. In fact, if you did not use a beater bar to bring up the felted areas, the vacuum would do nothing to it. Mohawk refuses to even speak with us saying it is not their responsibility. Well, they did sell the product. It is now three years and still the same "not us" go-around. Our friends often comment when they come into our home, "what happened to your carpet?". This product and Mohawk's response is so disappointing!

After 7 months, the carpeting looks worse than our 7-year old carpet that we had installed originally when we purchased our new home. We contacted the store who quickly contacted Mohawk, who sent out an inspector. Nothing was said to us other than we would be hearing directly from Mohawk. 5 weeks now, nothing. Defective Carpet That Cost $7,200 and Is 1-1/2 Years Old: We bought a new Mohawk carpet of a style called frieze from a carpet company which installed it. After the carpet was cleaned by a company the carpet salesman recommended, we noticed indentations in a pattern where the carpet was matted down. The indentations were about 3 inches by 1-1/2 inches in a pattern of about six in a row, and there were rows in three rooms, most extensively in the living room. The patterns were against the wall where no one could possibly walk so it wasn't from wear and tear. When we complained, the carpet salesman sent an "inspector" who concluded the problem was due to our cat walking in the same place on the carpet because the cat did not like the carpet. This inspector sent the report to Mohawk, which then denied our claim.
We have observed our cat and it does not walk on the same spot and there is no evidence to suggest our cat does not like our carpet. We are in the process of trying to get a different inspector, but there is no one taking any responsibility. The carpet cleaning company owner recognized there is a problem, but said he did not do anything with his equipment to cause the indentations where the carpet is matted down and his verbal opinion is it is the fault of the manufacturer and the carpet is defective.

We purchased Mohawk wall to wall carpeting from a local dealer and it was installed in January 2010. The carpet supposedly has a 5-year warranty. We are snowbirds and only use our house 7 months out of the year. There are only the two of us. We have no pets or children and we take off our shoes when we enter the carpeted area (master bedroom and office). We have noticed that the pattern of the carpet is flattened and worn in parts of the rooms. It is also dirty looking and although we have had the carpet cleaned professionally it didn't make a difference --the carpet still looks dirty. Our carpeting that we replaced with the Mohawk carpeting was 12 years old and never showed this kind of wear.
We reported the problem to the dealer and he sent out someone to inspect and photograph the affected areas. Subsequently, the dealer informed us that Mohawk claims this to be "normal wear and tear". Mohawk had the nerve to state that we "couldn't prove our absence from the house and we might have rented out our home while we are gone". In other words, we were called liars, which we find insulting. In our opinion, Mohawk is shirking a warranty issue on a carpet that--at best--has had (gentle) usage for a little over a year. From our experience we would say that the carpet that bears the Mohawk brand name is of poor quality and Mohawk is a company that will shirk their warranty responsibility by any means possible. Never will we consider their products again and we will share our experience with our many acquaintances.

I purchased eight hundred feet of Mohawk Caballo II carpeting from a major retailer in April of 2010. This carpet sheds and sheds and sheds. It matts down and the fibers fray. It looks like it has an outer layer of fuzz all the time. I contacted the retailer and they contacted Mohawk. Mohawk sent out an "independent" inspector.
A week later, I received a letter from Georgia (I am in CA) stating that my carpet is "exhibiting some appearance of change" but that it is because of "improper vacuum" and is also due to "abnormal use." This is nuts. My carpet is in a formal living room gated off from all animals and kids. No one is allowed to wear shoes in there and my vacuum is an eight year old Dyson. The inspector concluded his inspection after he found out I own a Dyson.
He immediately told me, "Oh, well your Dyson is causing this carpet to not wear well." I told him my previous carpet wore great for 10 years with the same vacuum. I never had an issue. I asked him why this carpet looks so bad after only six months. I spent a lot of money buying a good carpet and a good pad. I then looked up the entire warranty from Mohawk online. Nowhere in the warranty does it state that you cannot use a Dyson vacuum. In fact, it says you should use a quality vacuum either daily or three times a week to maintain your carpet. So, which is it Mohawk? To vacuum or not to vacuum?
The letter from Mohawk concludes, "The Wear-Dated warranty offers protections against non-restorable excessive matting, non restorable excessive crushing, and non-restorable loss of twist. At the time of the inspection, these conditions did not exist." Well, who concluded that? I can't restore it. I provided carpet samples which the inspector never sent to Georgia and they were never tested by Mohawk as promised. The inspector came out on 12/22/10 and I received a reject lett from Mohawk on 12/27/10. Mohawk sent a copy of the inspectors report and the only things he says in it is "I looked at the homeowners vacuum and its a Dyson, and I explained that the vacuum might be stripping."
I have read countless reports on this carpet. It goes by several names. All of them report the same thing. The inspector that came out even told me they will not want to replace the carpet because then it would be admitting that Mohawk has a problem with this particular brand. He said it would probably only cost them a hundred dollars to replace but they just won't do it. Well, that tells me that the whole inspection process is not "non-bias" and that it is just a bogus process that they go through to pretend they are providing their customer with some type of fake warranty.
Don't buy this carpet without knowing the facts. I also read a similar complaint online with the name Meridian II. I believe it could be the same product. Mohawk won't stand behind their carpet. So if you want it to shed, matt, unravel, and basically look like the cheapest carpet in the world, go for it. Otherwise, stay away from this shaggy messy wreck of a carpet by Mohawk.

The complaint is being filed against Mohawk Industries AND NY Carpets dba Belmont Carpets Co., Inc.
We purchased Mohawk carpet from NY Carpets dba Belmont Carpets Co., Inc. On 7-19-06 the carpet was installed in 3 bedrooms downstairs and 1 room upstairs along with the staircase. We paid $3500.00. Less than a week later - the carpet started to show defective discoloration in 3 of the bedrooms. Within an additional week we had approx. 80-100 flaws/defects throughout the house - including under beds, furniture, NO traffic areas on the staircase and upstairs.
We contacted NY carpets to inform them of the situation. They sent out a rep and they filed a claim with Mohawk Industries, the carpet manufacturer. 6 weeks after our carpet flaws were appearing, we finally had an inspector come out to our house to inspect the discoloration defects in the carpet. He came out on 8-29-06 at 7:00 a.m. and was in our house less than 5 minutes - looking only in 2 of the rooms in question while our children were still sleeping in their rooms with curtains drawn. I suggested to open the curtains so he can see the rest of the areas - he told me he had seen enough and would send his report to Mohawk.
A week later I received a copy of the report and it stated that there were 20-25 areas of concern and that the consumer (my family) had used an unidentified oxidizing agent that has caused these defects!
We were shocked at the results - esp. since the inspector had NOT done a thorough inspection and had only seen 20-25 our of the almost 100 areas affected and had come to this conclusion without doing any tests or even taking the time to see the overall areas that were defective.
At that time - we remembered we had remnants left by NY Carpets from the time of installation that had been rolled up and put in our garage. I inspected those pieces and found the same defective discoloration on the remnant piece of carpet! This is OBVIOUS PROOF that the defect was on the carpet prior to installation in our house. The remnant piece of carpet had NOT been touched by anyone but the installers and had been left for us to keep.
I have contacted Mohawk directly - since NY Carpets has basically passed the buck and is NOT taking any responsibility for the product purchased from them.
We sent pictures of all the affected areas to the Mohawk executives and their claims department by certified mail on 9-27-06. They asked that I send them the remnant piece of carpet so they can have lab work done to determine the cause of the defect. We sent the sample certified mail along with pictures of the remnant piece to the executives on 11-13-06. We received a letter from them on 11-29-06 saying the same thing, the defect is caused by an unidentified oxidizing agent. Yet I have not received a full lab report to prove they actually did run tests!
We are VERY disappointed in both NY Carpets and Mohawk industries for NOT standing behind their product!

I have been most unhappy with the durability of this carpet. The carpet fuzzed longer than any other new carpet I have ever had. The carpet under normal wear has matted down in the hall and entrance into my living room area.
I made complaints to the store right after it was installed about the stretching. The owner came back and restretched the carpet 6 weeks after he installed it. That was in Nov 2002. The carpet was stretched in 2003 and twice in 2004. Each time I made comments about why do we keep having to do this. The installed tech told us he had seem a lot of problem with this carpet. They store has sold a lot of it in our area.
In July of 2003 I insisted the owner of the carpet store contact Mohawk and have some one come and look at the carpet. It took him months before anyone contacted us. When the claims analyst finally came he spent very little time and did not take a sample.
The carpet looks good in the areas under furniture, but in the normal walk areas it looks beaten down, matted and there's not lift at all to the carpet. Last year we arranged to have new carpet installed in our home through an interior designer. The contractual agreement was made with this designer, Nancy. Within a few months of the installation of our carpet I became frustrated with the manner in which the carpet was wearing. It appeared dirty and yet I was unable to spot clean it. It also seemed to lack resiliency. When I discussed this situation with Nancy she suggested a particular cleaning product that did not help the situation.
When I began to insist that something was wrong with the carpet she stated that it was a beautiful high quality piece of carpet and that she could not understand the problem even though she had seen the carpet. Her assessment was that because it is a plush carpet it would give the appearance of having light and dark spots.
When my husband and I insisted that some action be taken, the designer said she would contact the factory representative but that we should go ahead and have the carpet steam cleaned. We refused to do this asserting that a six month old carpet should not need to be cleaned.
Finally, Mohawk Carpet sent an inspector. The inspector walked into our home and began shaking his head and demonstrated for me what the problem is. His report states: "...the lay of the carpet has randomly changed direction. These areas where the nap has changed also changes the light reflection making the areas appear both shinier and darker as if the carpet is wet. The inspector concluded that ...the phenomenon related to the consumer's carpet is called pooling, watermarking or shading. Shading usually occurs sometime after a carpet is installed, and if replaced, many times will recur if the same product is reinstalled. It is not known what actually causes shading, nor is any know correction iof the problem available that will eliminate the shading without recurrence. Shading is something that for inexplicable reasons, just happens, and in my opinion is not related to, or caused by either the manufacturer, retailer, installer or the consumer."
I cannot believe that this is considered an acceptable explaination. It sounds as though our carpet exists in some mysterious domain outside the normal laws of physics. The bottom line is that whatever the explanation we have a carpet that appears dirty and packed down. When you buy a new carpet, it would seem to me, that you should reasonably expect an attractive appearance? The claim analyst from Mohawk states that ...there is no evidence of a manufacturing defect so it appears, at this time, that we are stuck with this shoddy looking product.
