My complaint is about the Hoover WindTunnel and Hoover management and customer service. I purchased a "Windtunnel" three years ago, 2008. Shortly after using it, the motor started to stink and smoke. I returned it to Lowe's and got a new one. That one lasted quite a few months, maybe eight and it started smoking. That would have been in early 2009.
I called Hoover and was informed that I would be buying numerous belts because if you lower the unit to make contact with the carpet, it will burn up the belts. There was no "fix" or offer to upgrade and no apology. The simple truth was Hoover produced a substandard product and could care less. They got my money and that was all they cared about. Hoover was aware of the problems and could only say buy belts. So feeling trapped I did just that, I purchased several belts and started playing the game.
This last time, 3/7/10, I changed the belt. I turned on the vacuum and started sending smoke signals to the Indians hidden in the hills of Tennessee. This is it. I wish for someone to tell me of some action that I could take to recoup my losses. My wife and I live very modestly. I am on social security retirement and therefore have no money to waste. I cannot afford to repair this machine and most certainly cannot afford to replace it. What are we supposed to do?

Below is a copy of my complaint followed by Hoover's email reply which tells me that belts are not covered under warranty. I know that. My complaint is that belts should not have to be replaced four times in a six-month period of minimal use. I was appalled by their totally unconcerned attitude, total disregard for their customers and lack of responsibility for their obviously inferior vacuums. I should have researched the company before buying, but at this point, I wish only for them to assume responsibility for the inferior performance and allow me to exchange my machine for one that I can actually use without having to constantly replace belts.
I did not even mention the fact that it overheats and shuts off. After it cools off, I have to unplug it from the wall receptacle then plug it in again before it will turn on and allow me to finish vacuuming. And I didn't mention the fact that it is extremely hard to turn the knob that adjusts the brush height. I can tolerate those problems but I cannot afford to constantly replace belts. It's very sad that we are asked to support our country and buy American-made products only to buy from an American business that is so cheap it will not take responsibility for an inferior product. Below is a copy of the complaint I emailed them followed by their response:
On 7/9/09, my husband and I bought a new Hoover vacuum at Sears in Columbus, Ga (Model: UH 70085). We have had to replace the belts three times and they now need to be replaced again. Because of torn muscles in my right shoulder, I vacuum only about every three weeks, which means that I've used the vacuum maybe 16 times. Twice, we ordered belts via your 800 number and finally, we took the vacuum to the local authorized service center, A-1 Vacuum Cleaner Co, 2016 Auburn Avenue, Columbus, Ga., our thought being that something must be wrong with the vacuum for it to require such frequent replacement of belts. And sure enough, that is all that was required on that particular day and the vacuum was pronounced "good to go."
However, there happened to be a Hoover representative in the service center while we were there. According to him, we simply bought a cheap vacuum, even though we bought the most expensive Hoover Sears had. What really galled me was that this man told me in so many words, "You should never buy a vacuum cleaner in a department store. You should buy it at a service center where you can get a good one." I asked him, "Why does Hoover sell good ones only in a service center?" He said, "So I can get a paycheck."
Not only do we feel taken advantage of since we thought we were buying a decent vacuum, I also feel betrayed by an American company that I thought was reputable. Today is Feb. 16, 2010 and the belts need to be replaced for the fourth time. We are retired, on fixed income and I need a reliable vacuum. We cannot afford to keep replacing belts. We have had to pay for all but the very first belt and, of course, now, it's time to replace the Hepa filter. Since we are still within the one year warranty and completely dissatisfied, I would very much like to exchange this "cheap" vacuum for a "good" one. I feel that it is a fair remedy. Your format allows me to enter only one phone number. I look forward to your reply.

I bought a Hoover vacuum in summer 2009. The unit number is: U6637-967. The dirt detection light broke within two days. The store where I purchased it from gave me another new vacuum. It has been about nine months and now, the on/off switch will not work. We were told to take it to a repair shop an hour away. We are afraid to use it after reading the complaints online.

I purchased Hoover's Mach3 Cyclonic Filtration System a year ago. I found several issues with this product. It overheated and shut down after 15 minutes of use. It promised to pick up pet hair with a special attachment that did not work. Never mind that, it did not pick up most of the pet hair anyway; leaving me to have to gather the hair up with my fingers the majority of time. The hose for the attachments is not long enough, so the unit fell over during each use, hitting my foot and leaving it in pain, because it wasn't able to stretch where I needed it to clean. The hose became blocked after each use, so I would have to take the time to clean it out, which is a difficult process.
I thought the vacuum was supposed to do the cleaning for me, who knows. The filtration system did not work effectively, there was dirt and dust sitting on the unit quiet a bit, it seemed to push the dirt around rather than pick it up a lot. The bag less container needed to be dumped every time I cleaned a room regardless of how full it may or may not have been. If I did not clean the canister, it would not work. It is difficult to get the canister cleaned because you have to stick your hand up in it in order to get the dirt and dust to release from the top of the canister.
Needless to say, I was extremely unhappy with this product and would think twice if I ever think about purchasing another Hoover at all. The economic damage that resulted was the fact that I had to purchase another brand and could not get any type of credit or my money back from the unit I ended up throwing out in the end.

I bought my Hoover Windtunnel in 2007 and vacuum twice a month...not a lot. But when the brush started to work inconsistently, I went online and saw many complaints about this model, even starting a fire. I was vacuuming this morning, and the brush part stopped working again. So I put it down and got ready to walk my dog.
I smelled plastic burning, and the house quickly filled with thick smoke! The hose was on fire and melting all over! My son and I grabbed the vacuum and throw it outside in the rain and had to put out tiny plastic fires in the house from the burning hose. If I went out that minute to walk my dog, my house would have burnt, and my two kids were inside! If Hoover knows these catch fire, they should recall them. The rug that the vacuum was burning on has some melted plastic and burnt marks, and the house smelled but there was very little damage. We were very lucky.

I recently purchased a Hoover UH70130 vacuum. The first time we used it, it picked up a yarn from a rug which wrapped around the beater bar causing the belt to burn in two. I ordered the replacement belt from their website, but received the wrong belt: wrong size, wrong material. I've tried to call to get the right belt and have been told that it was the right belt and I didn't put it on correctly. They've had a lot of problems with this belt and a manager would call back. They say they have no record of selling me a belt. They say they have the right belt but can't ship it as they don't have my address. You can't speak to a manager. Managers don't return calls. You can't leave a message for a manager. Bottom line: absolutely the worst customer service/support I have ever experienced. Hoover is horrible! The result is a damaged carpet and a vacuum cleaner that won't work without a belt.

I purchased the Hoover (model: UH30065), (mfg code: H09A) approx 2 months ago from Costco's. I was using the vacuum when I accidentally ran over the power cord (I'm sure everyone has at some time) and in an instant, the unit ripped off about (2) two inches of the power cord insulation right down to the bare copper wire. Luckily, this tripped the circuit breaker in my electrical panel. Otherwise, the potential of receiving an electrical shock and/or fire starting were likely. When I called Hoovers corporate customer service (once I finally got through), they replied that it was my problem, not theirs and they would not repair it under warranty.
When I said I have been using vacuums for over 30 years and have never seen this happen before and what could cause this, Steve's reply was that the motors are stronger and the brushes are stiffer than previous generations of vacuums. My reply to that was, then wouldn't you upgrade the cord to meet the increased power it may be exposed to. Doesn't your company's Quality Control Engineers perform an operational safety assessment of vacuums for just these types of issues? Surely, if they had this problem, it would have been detected. The arrogance of his saying no and the cord is basically the same as used by other manufacturers would had surprised me but I was expecting it by this point of the conversation. All I can say about the Hoover Company, first time/last time customer. And yes, just out of curiosity, the next time I'm in the store, I will check the competition's cords to see if they are just as inferior to the environment that they may be exposed to.

Last July, I purchased a Hoover Windtunnel upright vacuum from my local chain retail store. This vacuum will only work two or three times (if that), before the beater bar stop rotating. Per Hoover, we have taken it in each time to an authorized Hoover repair store (at least 4 times now!). Each time, they replaced the belt that stretched and came off. The last time I took it in for this was at the beginning of January. I can't even tell you what model it is as they still have it!
After being told repeatedly that they were "waiting for a special belt to arrive from Hoover", I was finally told yesterday that Hoover does not even make the "special belt". Furthermore, he went on to say that this problem exists in the particular model of Windtunnel that I purchased, and they are waiting for Hoover to recognize it as a problem and issue a recall. In the meantime, I have no vacuum, I am out the money I paid as well as a vacuum that I maybe was able to get one or two full month's use of, combined.

I purchase this vacuum about four months ago and they want to charge me for a roller brush. I have six year warranty for this vacuum. It said they cover everything but now they are backing up on their agreement. It's not my fault that they did not pack the bearing tight and put enough oil inside this. It's a seal roller. The only way it can go bad is internal. I understand if they went bad after a year or two but not four months and even then this unit is stilled under warranty.

I will never buy another Hoover. I bought the Hoover Wind tunnel. It was supposed to be able to get the pet hair. Well, all it does is ball up the pet hair and spit it out. I've had it looked at and there is nothing wrong with it except apparently the engineers who designed this thing were complete idiots. I've only had it for about 6 months and I have buyer's remorse. I've tried to contact Hoover, but I am told that I have to pay to have it sent to them and I can't get Wally-World to honor the guarantee that I paid for (which is another complaint altogether).

I purchased a Hoover Bagless WindTunnel Vacuum about 2 years ago. I hardly used it since purchasing it as it was kept upstairs and for vacuuming just the upstairs. I still have the box and the vacuum is basically brand new. My complaint is that it's a piece of junk. It shuts off automatically because it starts overheating and you can smell this horrific smell coming from the unit. Not only that, the vacuum stops working and the only way it will start is when you pull on the cord that attaches the vacuum to the unit. Hoover's customer service is horrible and this particular unit is horrible!

Hoover Vacuum Cleaners melt carpet! This is not just another disgruntled kook blowing off steam because a company he bought from didn't respond to his complaint. This is a serious charge rightly levied against Hoover Vacuum for inadequately warning consumers how their Wind Tunnel vacuum cleaner can literally melt carpet when it lies idle on a staircase rung.
Inadequate warnings! - The owner's manual, which I read thoroughly before I even turned the machine on, warns that when vacuuming stairs, the unit should be left at the bottom of the staircase and the longer hose (not included, but available at extra cost) should be used - get this so as to avoid undue wear on the carpet and to avoid possible injury. Like I was going to go out and buy an extra long hose after having spent over $300 on what is supposed to be a top flight vacuum cleaner before using it once! I don't think so.
Absolutely no warning about how the revolving brush creates so much friction induced heat that it will literally melt your carpet the first time out of the box. Being an able bodied male of at least average strength, I felt that placing the unit on one stair and holding it steady with the left arm while using the hose attachment to vacuum the stair immediately above with the right arm would work just fine. And it did until I reached the top and noticed to my horror as I looked down that vacuum brush marks had literally been branded into the carpet on at least 6 stairs.
Non-existent customer service! - The worst part of this saga continued when I tried to reach customer service to complain about the inadequate warning in their user's manual and inquire as to what they could do about my practically new Berber carpet that was ruined because of it. The usual 10 minute navigation through a series of automated prompts finally brought me to the voicemail of a Steve **, who never had the decency to return any of my calls. I had found a carpet company that would replace the damaged carpet on my staircase for about half the cost of the vacuum cleaner and I submitted his estimate in writing. I only wanted them to cough up the $200 he wanted to fix the damage. I was not asking for a room full of new carpet.
And both times that I complained in writing to the email address given for such, an automatic reply came back saying that my message had been received and that I would be contacted shortly. It never happened. Never, except when I hung on to phone calls that I initiated did I ever get to speak to anyone from Hoover. In fact, the email avenue is a dead end because when you reply to their reply, it tells you not to reply. In other words, all avenues of complaint are basically dead ends.
Fairness denied! - Update: A subordinate of the senior personal, who would have had the authority to help me, finally called me back on 9/3/09 to deny my claim citing the warning about undue wear in the manual. Undue wear my **! This machine butchered a like new rug after one use! They said denial of claim occurred after at least a half dozen phone calls/emails from me over the course of over 8 weeks' time! All I know is this is no way to treat a customer with a valid complaint. Don't buy from this crappy company. They don't give a hoot about their customers - they only want your money.

I have sent Hoover two requests in regard to my Hoover Self-Propelled Wind Tunnel Model U6476-910 Series Q 12.0 Model # 050600021306. This vacuum was recalled once for a faulty carpet height adjustment. Hoover replaced the first time... the replacement is now doing the exact same thing. It makes so the roller brush will not turn and also causes the burning rubber smell. Yes, I have changed both the bag and the belt... still doing the same thing. We consumers pay good money, and expect more than 2 years on a residential vacuum... I have an older Hoover Wind Tunnel (not the self-propelled) and my daughters are still using it with no problems. I have always been a loyal Hoover buyer, but now I am thinking that my business means nothing to them. No one has even bothered to return a reply via email or call me. Does Hoover even care? Economically in this economy, the last thing I need to worry about is how to afford another new vacuum cleaner.

This is a WindTunnel twin canister bag-less upright vacuum. I constantly have to empty it and clean the filter. It costs almost $30.00 to replace a filter. The suction is horrible. The hose for the attachments keeps coming off. It's heavy, hard to push, and I just can't stand it anymore. It's about two years old and I'm just fed up. I've had it cleaned and it's just the same, no suction, heavy and frustrating. I don't have money to replace it.

I too bought a Hoover Wind Tunnel, self-propelled about $300+ at Sears about 3-4 years ago. The machine was at a second house where we were about once a month. After I used it, maybe 5 times at most (less than a year), the machine started smoking and had a burning smell. I took it to the Hoover service center who snottily told me the belt needed changing and the bag too. The bag wasn't anywhere near full and a new belt after 5 uses! Anyway, it worked. Since then, the self-propel no longer works. It has emitted the burning smell one other time. My mother had her Hoover and then I had it till it was about 40 years old. It worked, but I couldn't get parts or bags. So after reading Consumer Reports, I bought the Wind Tunnel. I will never buy a Hoover product again. I wish I had seen this website earlier. I tried to file a complaint with Hoover online, but to no avail. Not even sure if it got to them.

I purchased an F59414900 steam vacuum on 1-29-2008. I have used this steam vacuum 4 times during the year. This steam vacuum is leaking water without it even being turned on. I called the Hoover Warranty number and talked to the supervisor and told her. I asked her what she would do if she used this machine 4 times and it leaked without even being turned on. Her suggestion was for me to take it to a repair place and pay for it to get repaired. I told her this is not right and they should be either making better quality merchandise or just stop making Hoover steam vacs altogether. I also told her to type in leaking Hoover steam vacs and see how many other people are having the exact same problems.
This is a machine that we do not use daily, but only when our carpets need cleaning and it's broken? There is no reason that the consumer should have to pay for something that is rarely used and have it leaking from the bottom. I will never buy another Hoover product again.

I will no longer buy a Hoover product.

I purchased this vacuum less than a year ago. (It has a one-year warranty on it.) The roller brush that spins became warped. I contacted Hoover for a replacement brush, their website said the brush was unavailable but that since it was under warranty, to take it to the nearest Hoover authorized repair shop for warranty work. I did that, then I got a bill from the repair shop for $49, about half the new cost of the vacuum. I contacted Hoover and got the run around. Finally they bumped my call up to someone in the corporation office. They gave me the runaround also.
So the bottom line is whatever they say in the warranty, which is in their owner's manual, is a false statement. I read the warranty back to the corporate executive, and he just said, "I can't control what a repair shop will charge." I said, "Well, this is warranty work, and your company referred me to this shop for repair. So your company should be liable for any cost (as it states in the warranty information, Parts and Labor)." Needless to say, I'm never going to buy a Hoover product again; and neither should anyone else.

After having a couple of Shark cordless vacuums fall apart, I decided to pony up and buy the Hoover Platinum Cordless. The vacuum does work well. I decided to buy a spare battery pack (at almost seventy bucks!) and ordered it directly from the Hoover site. Right out of the box, it would not hold a charge. No problem, it has a 2-year warranty, right? Well, try to get them to honor that warranty! Their customer service phone number is long distance, so I tried their website. First, I tried the link to the Warranty Information page. Ha! Choosing that took me to an FAQs page with no warranty info. They do not want you to have their super-secret email addresses, so they force you to use a Contact Us form, which of course gives you no record of your communication. I posted my plea there twice and several days later got a list of Hoover dealers, all miles away. (Is it too much for me to ask them to simply send me a new battery since I bought it directly from them in the first place?)
Finally, I decided to bite the bullet and pay for a phone call to their customer service number. I listened to the canned voice slowly telling me at least twice to visit their website to solve my problem (ha!). Finally, I was told that they were closed and to call back during their business hours, Monday through Friday, 8am to 7pm EST since I was calling at 9:30 Eastern Time on a Friday. That was a surprise!
So I called the nearest Hoover dealer from the list they gave me and asked if I could bring in the defective battery. The guy there was real nice but says, "That is a part we cannot get. You have to get those direct from Hoover." He further told me that Hoover is apparently closing most of their service centers and parts are a nightmare. What a colossal waste of my time! Talk about a nightmare. I am never buying another of their products. They may or may not make good stuff, but there is no reason in this day and age for their 'don't give a damn' approach to customer service.

I am a long time, approximately 30 year consumer of the Hoover vacuum cleaner. We don't have a huge home, probably only 1,400 square feet, but I do vacuum a lot. Over the years, I have gone through a lot of vacuum cleaners, but these last 2 wind tunnels are the worst. I remember when I got married, the first thing my husband and I bought was a TV and a Hoover cleaner. My mother recommended it because of its fine reputation. I don't know what has happened to this company. I don't know if these products decades ago were manufactured in America which explains its fine history.
I read in one of the previous complaints that it's made in China now which would explain its unreliability. I have had belt problems and that burning smell. The part that you open up to put the bag in broke after only about 4 bag changings. This front panel is now held together by a giant rubber band to keep it closed. I don't think the suction is that great either. I think this is a lot of money to spend for an inferior product that probably cost the Chinese 10 bucks to make. When are we going to start manufacturing products in America again?

For the pass week we have been smelling a burning scent coming from the vacuum cleaner. Today May 24, 2008 the vacuum cleaner started to shut it self off after cleaning one room of the house we realized that there is a internal circuit breaker in this model when it gets to hot. But it appears that it is always hot we even have to keep the cord unrolled until the vacuum cleaner cools down. This appears in our opinion to be a fire hazard we are returning the Hoover upright WindTunnel + Cyclonic vacuum cleaner in the next day or two. We are posting this information to other websites Government and Private to notify them we would request any feed back in this matter. Thank You!

I, my mother and my father all bought the same Hoover windtunnel vacuum cleaner and all three of us are having problems. My vacuum's roller bar will not function and is smoking up my house as a result. My mothers vacuum won't turn off. And my father's vacuum won't self propel.
I complained to a customer care representative and they said they will repair if for a fee and I must pay to ship it to an authorized repair shop since I don't live near any. This will cost me even more money that to replace it!!!!!!! worst of all all three vacuums are still under their one year Warranty !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I, my mother and father just can't afford to replace this vacuum and we are left with nothing. I am angry that Hoover doesn't care to fix their bad products. I make me feel like I an nothing to these people.

I bought a Hoover Mach 5 vacuum in April of 2007. For the last six weeks this vacuum has been over-heating to the point that I can't let my children be around it because I am afraid they will be burned. I called Hoover and I was told that there was no recall on this particular model, but if I was willing to pay, they would be happy to fix it.
This vacuum over-heats, and many times quits working altogether. The over-heating constitutes a safety hazzard in my opinion. I paid approx. $200.00 for this vacuum, and that is a lot for a couple in college with two small children. I can not afford to replace this vacuum.

I bought a Hoover S3639 Bagged WindTunnel Canister Vacuum for $169.95 on July 10, 2007. I bought it over the internet from amazon.com. It already stopped working. It doesn't pick up any dirt or dust. I am very disappointed in this item.
Since the machine is now worthless, I have lost the money that I spent on it. It didn't even last one year. I will have to save money to buy another type of vacuum.

I bought my second Wind Tunnel, Fall 2007. The self propelled switch doesn't move, the brush doesn't rotate and my carpet is suffering. The local vacuum repair shop advised me not to buy this Hoover Wind Tunnel for just those reasons and the fact that going from a bag vacuum to a canister that had to be emptied was not a great experience. He was right on all accounts. I would never recommend this product to anyone.

I have been buying Hoover canister vacuums for about 30 years. Each generation has become more loaded with interesting and potentially useful features. But at the same time reliability has decreased precipitously. We are now on our second generation of the WindTunnel canister, the futuristic-looking model S3765, with the beautiful silver shell. If only it worked as good as it looks. It was purchased 3 years ago to replace its predecessor, which suffered from switch problems and powerhead problems. I spent over $100 in parts in an effort to repair the old machine, but finally gave up and simply bought the new, improved model. Guess what? Now the newer machine is doing the exact same things as the old model. The switch in the handle malfunctions, and the powerbrush in the vacuum head switches off and on (mostly off). Basically the unit has become useless.
Past experience has taught me that by the time I would try to have the thing repaired, I will have spent nearly as much as the cost of a new machine. Like most everything else you buy, these vacuums have become simply disposable items. They last maybe 3 years, if you're lucky. Then when they start to malfunction you may as well just toss them in the trash and get a new one. The Hoover name has zero meaning as far as quality. They use the cheapest parts they can find in order to maximize their profit, and have no concern about reliability issues or customer satisfaction.

We bought a Hoover wind tunnel upright vacuum cleaner November 2004. It worked OK for a few months and then started burning belts up all the time. It has had very little use because every time I get it out to use it, the belt starts slipping and it stinks up the house in a matter of seconds. I have changed the belt numerous times but a new belt lasts for only a few uses.
I just want to know if Hoover has a solution for this problem. I have heard there was a recall but do not know if they addressed this specifically.

Hoover "Windtunnel" is unusable. Every time we use it, it clogs up. Miserable. It also blows dust and doesn't propel.

My Hoover self propelled vacuum's on/off switch has failed. This is the second unit that this has happened to; the first unit was purchased in Oct. 2006 and switched failed after 6 months. After five attempts were made to repair it Sears replaced the unit. This second unit is 7 months old and the same thing is happening--have not contacted sears yet. Hoover should have to correct this.
My wife has had a stroke and unable to use anything that is not self propelled. There are few units on the market that are affordable enough for most in middle income bracket can purchase.

I purchased a Hoover Mach 5 vaccuum on 2/24/07 at my local Walmart. In August it stopped working. The Walmart only has a 90 day return policy. I paid 168.44 for this machine. That is a lot of money for only 6 months use. I e-mailed the company and explained that I believe I should receive either my money back or a new machine.
Their response by general e-mail was that they do not take responsibility for something not directly purchased from them. They said I had to take it to a repair shop and listed the local names. I replied that this was a ridulous answer and the owner of the company probably does not want his name attributed to a product that doesn't work.
This was an irresponsible response from them. I do not believe it is logical to expect an expensive item to break in less than a year and then make it the consumer's problem to get it fixed. This amount of money is a lot to the average customer and I expect way more for my money. I also told them that I wanted to hear from a titled person of authority from the company, because I do not accept their answer to my problem. This was in mid-September and they have completely ignored me.

Well I bought a Hoover Windtunnel Wide Path back in July of 2006. Around October of that year my vacuum starting having a problem where the on/off switch would not work. I took it in for service and had it repaired by the local service company that they use for warranty work. Well then shortly thereafter is started doing the same thing again. I read on the internet that the self propelled vacuum was having similar problems and there was a recall.
I spoke with customer service at hoover (Eric @ 18772816763 x 3567) and explained my concern and requested that they just give me a new one since nobody else was having the same problem. After a lot, and I mean alot, of jerking around and also receiving an extended warranty I finally receive a new vacuum in January of 2007. Well is is October of 2007 and guess what. That's right my replaced vacuum is having the same problem except the on/off switch does not work at all and it seems to get hot.
Well I contacted them again through the email and there sight states that they keep files for 10 years. Well the lady that I listed above said that I was the only one that has had this problem and that they want to fix it for me and they are starting the same process again with the rude repair shop. I was suppose to take it in on this Monday and I just haven't had time to do it. I find that it is rather strange that I am the only person that has had 4 different on/off switch problems.

no physical damage, just a nusinance to have to take it back with it being used so little.
