LA 145 riding mower - Bought new in 2008, paint began coming off deck (no primer under paint) in one year. Dealer replaced deck (I paid labor) in 2011. This included new belt spindles and belt. Center spindle pulled through deck in 2013. Had to replace all three spindles, and pulleys in 2014. Both front wheel bushings wore completely out in 2014 even though lubed properly. Mower is at shop now having those replaced. Good engine and transmission... Poor quality parts on deck, steering and front wheels.

I bought my John Deere riding tractor for around $3000.00 dollars just because I saved enough money and always wanted a nice tractor. (Didn't really need it) I had a 14 year old tractor that was still running and never missed a beat that I bought from Kmart for $900.00 when they were still around. (I gave it away after I bought my new tractor) this new tractor I bought five years ago and every year it goes to the shop because it won't start. It is five years old and has 30 hrs on it. Every year when the repair shop gets it running I may mow one time with it because winter is setting in. It's in the shop right now. Now they are charging me $300.00 to fix it.

Dealer's shop failed to set up mower correctly. Shafter connecting deck to PTO is too short or deck is incorrectly linked to tractor. I found this myself but paid "mechanic" apparently wasn't trained to make sure PTO latch was actually latched. Did reach salesman but since dealership is closed for the weekend, I own a $14000 shop decoration that is hanging from my chain hoist. Lucky for dealer that I could tell what was wrong... They couldn't.

LA125 - These mowers are junk. Decks break, very difficult to change, the blades, height adjustment is a pain. MY engine blew up at 200 hours, but it also blew seals at 120 hours. Cuts unevenly, it is VERY loud. Not worth the powder to blow it up. They cost nearly $2000, but aren't worth fixing, Just JUNK.

Our second John Deere mower just fell apart. The first one we had lasted about 7 years then it fell apart. We bought another one because the dealer convinced us and now five years has passed and it has required several repairs, but the most recent really upsets me - had to spend $396.34 to repair. I told my husband next time we go to Agway, Home Depot or Walmart and buy the one they have there.
My father had to buy a few over the years but the total mowers he had to repurchase from Agway cost less than two John Deeres. I thought that John Deere advertised how rugged and long lasting they are - not true! So disappointed. Just got it back after a repair from the dealer - really thinking we will be lucky if it lasts another year! So disappointed! I just want others to know - skip the John Deere and go with one that costs less.

I am writing to you about an issue that I have encountered with one of your riding mowers and your Customer Service Department. My family and I were avid John Deere customers. I purchased my third JD mower an L110 42 cut riding mover in 2006 as you can read on the attachment. I bought it from Cullens Equipment Co. (John Deere Dealer) in Dublin, GA. My issue is that your company is grossly misrepresenting the product by declaring that the transmission is a sealed unit. As you can see in the attachment, I followed the manual to service the mower and when I had issues, the owners manual as well as 2 dealers informed me that it was a sealed unit and had to be replaced. That is the first of my issues.
After contacting Turf Torq, your transmission supplier, I wrote the letter to John Deere and was promptly contacted by Kimberly in your Customer Service Dept. She informed me that due to the fact that I did not go through a dealer that JD would not honor my claim. I explained that I did go to 2 dealers and that they had continued to say that it was a sealed unit and had to be replaced and there was nothing else they could do. She asked me for the names of the Reps at Turf Torq, which I did not have at the time. She never apologized for my problem and seemed to have very little concern that I was not satisfied.
I asked to speak to her Supervisor but she said there was no one else to talk to due to she was the Supervisor. This frustrated me and I vented to her while she remained silent. After asking if she still on the phone, she said yes and for me to have a nice day and hung up. As I tried to explain to Kimberly that I alone would have little to no impact on John Deere's business. But that it would be all of the people that I tell about the way I was treated that at some point would have an impact. It has already cost you one sale as my son bought a Gravely zero radius mower on Friday.
He owned a JD riding mower purchased from the same dealer that I bought from but would not buy from you due to the problems that I have had. As I am in the Customer Service business at Karastan a division of Mohawk Industries, I understand that you cannot completely satisfy every customer. What I do know that if you represent your products properly and treat your customers in a way that they do understand, that they are the reason that you are in business, that it goes a long way to having repeat customers. I would appreciate your prompt attention to this matter or point me to someone that can help me.

On 04/02/14, I went to Red Bluff Home Depot to buy the mower I had decided upon. A D140. I knew what I wanted. I was sold a mower with a known defect, and I feel they hoped I wouldn't notice. When I called the following day, they (HD) said, "Oh yeah, you got that one?" So I got to make another trip down there to exchange the hood of my "new" mower. Had they mentioned the day I bought my "new" mower that the next day began a "Buy a mower, get a trailer!" sale, I probably would have waited till the next day to buy. Of course they chose not to. But to sell me a known to be defective mower, the day before they were going to offer an enticement, hoping I wouldn't notice is unforgivable. I complained to HD, got a callback from somebody that didn't even care enough to find out what the problem was! I will say one last time that $2256.46 may not be a big deal to JD/HD but it is to me. I won't be back to either.

We purchased a new Z425 Zero turn mower in July of 2012. At time of purchase, we inquired about the extended warranty and were told by the dealer that it could be purchased anytime within the two-year warranty period. We contacted the dealer yesterday with the intention of purchasing the extended warranty and found out that they are no longer in business. We have found that this is not uncommon for John Deere in FL. So then we contacted the next nearest dealer, some 80 miles away, in Fort Pierce to see if we could purchase the warranty from them.
We were advised that we should have purchased the warranty during the first 365 days. This was the first time we had heard this. However, we were then told that if the running hours were less than 120, the warranty could still be issued for $269. We have 90.6 hours so they said it could be done. The following day, they changed their mind and said they couldn't. They called the John Deere home office and everything changed. They were advised that under no circumstances could the extended warranty be purchased beyond the 365 days from the original purchase. Then the dealership said that we should have known when we signed a white piece of paper that informed us that we understood that the extended warranty was only available during the first 365 days after purchase.
This was news to us. We never saw such a paper and never signed anything like that. We are angry, feel like we have been mislead, and now we are getting the run-a-round. Where we purchased the mower is no longer in business, the next closest dealership is giving us the run-a-round, and now the John Deere home office refuses to make any exceptions to their hard fast rules, in spite of the misleading information of the dealership at the time of sale. This leaves a very bad taste in our mouth for the customer service of this company as well as the two dealerships. We are not happy customers!

I have owned two John Deere lawn tractors STX38 and LT155 have no real complaint about the tractor itself. It's those darn cheap plastic hoods they put on them. Both tractors the hoods cracked up and fell off. That is just cheap for John Deere to do this to a good machine. My next mower will not be a John Deere just because of those cheap hoods they put on them. John Deere should have to recall all those hoods that crack and fall off. If you are going to keep the mower you buy for a while don't buy a John DEERE or you will be mowing without a hood.

The transmission on my John Deere LT190 is going out. A little over 400 hours on it. When I bought it the salesman told me I'd never have to worry about it. It was the biggest/best in the LT line, etc. Now it won't even ride my wife around the yard. It use to take me anywhere. Don't even try to push snow.
John Deere said replace it. $600+ not including labor. Turns out the transmission is not serviceable. Called Tuff Torq, the manufacturers of the transmission. Best they would do was refer me to some guy who sells an upgrade kit for $1900.00 on eBay, and Tuff Torq ships the transmission to me. I would at least expect them to tell me what I need to fix their problem. Is there a Class Action I can get involved with? I too paid a premium for the John Deere name. I too will not waste my money on a John Deere product.

John Deere model 145, L145, LA145 - If you have a yard that is anything but "perfectly" LEVEL, do not buy a riding mower with a hydro-drive (forward and reverse speed pedals). These transaxles will not hold up on yards that are not level. These hydro transaxles will overheat and fail. Buy one with a manual transmission only. I like the convenience of just pushing pedals to go back or forward too but I now know better. I'm mad that John Deere didn't state the limitations of this mower.
I had to replace the transaxle and change the way I mow my yard and I'm not encouraged that the new $650 transaxle is any better than the old one or that it will hold up. If I had it to do over again, I would buy a cheap riding mower with a manual transmission since I can't afford an $8000 riding mower. If you must have a riding mower with a hydro-drive transaxle, expect to pay at least $8000 for one that will hold up on up and downhill grades.

I purchased this John Deere lawn tractor Mod # 335 for $6200.00. Was told that this model was one of the better mowers on the market. 1st experienced a problem with the cheap plastic hood. I put it away for the first winter with 50 hours of use on the timer. When I took it out of my shop in the spring, I noticed that the hood had a crack that ran the entire length of the hood (Top of Hood). Called dealer and was told that the hood was not a warranty item, but if I wanted to purchase a new top hood section, it would cost me $188.00. I plastic welded the damaged one, then the bottom of the hood started cracking and pieces fell off.
I always look down when mowing so I don't run over parts that have fallen off. Then the bolts that hold the small plastic wheels on each side of the mower deck broke (Wheels that hold mower deck level). Installed brackets and wheels off of a Murray mower, no more level wheel problems, then the yellow plastic seal fell off of the seat frame. No way to fix this problem. Seat won't fit seat base anymore. It was originally glued onto seat base with a clear caulk. I can't talk or deal with the local dealer. They say that the problems with this mower are my problems and they are not a warranty item. Kubota here I come.

Purchased John Deere LA -115 series with 42" Deck and hydrostatic transmission some years ago with only 40 hours on clock. Have replaced many blade sets and done all greasing and services when and as required. At 100 hours had to get deck mounting brackets re-welded. Now with 250 hours on clock recently had to rebuild mower deck as one of the blade spindles tore through the deck! Quoted over $500.00 for new bare deck!
Decided I would improve a poor original design and had local steel laser cutting company manufacture me a quantity of 2.5mm thick x 177mm diameter reinforcement plates. Had entire deck sandblasted then plates mig welded onto deck, cracked mounting brackets re-welded and strengthened, two new blade spindles and bolts fitted, etch primed and painted with genuine JD yellow paint.
Total cost to overhaul mower deck approx. $380.00 Australian. Maybe John Deere should weld reinforcement plates into new decks at production level as this seems to be a common problem! Also etch priming before final coat of paint would improve finish and stop paint from cracking and peeling off deck.

I bought a 2013 3320 with 300 cx loader and frontier pallet forks in December 2013. I need to lift pallets that weigh 1600 lbs. The dealer assured me it would do this. I tried to lift the pallets with the loader and it will not do it. I contacted the dealer and he could not understand why it would not lift the pallets. He said I was not running the engine at high enough rpm, but I am running it at the pto symbol on the tach. Then he said it will lift the pallets easily with the 3 point. So I had an adapter made for the 3 point that will accept the forks, and the 3 point struggles to lift 1000 lbs and makes a whining noise. I told the dealer and he said he would check into it and call me back. 3 weeks later he has never called, also never returned my calls two other times when the new tractor was low on hydraulic fluid and front axle fluid. I had to buy my own fluid because they did not check and fill the fluid levels before it left the dealership. Maybe I should have bought orange.

Now with snow I had above parts plus auger bearings replaced. Was told it needed a new gearbox. That's where the noise was coming from.
I couldn't believe it. 35 hrs and it needs a new gearbox? Are you freaking kidding me? What kind of scrap junk is their snow blower? Cost of gearbox is 950. New blower would be 1200 with my old one. Brought it back to me and it's been a green and yellow lawn ornament ever since. Received a bill for $800 - $300 to drive it around Virginia and $490 for 14.4 hours of failed diagnostics. Called them and told them that the tractor still doesn't run and the service manager laughed and offered to send a truck out and get it again and start a new ticket. Apparently, this is how this dealership makes their money. The owner should consider running for office with practices like this. The best part? This John Deere machine is only 6 years old with 480 hours on it and it only has to cut 1.5 acres of grass on a flat property. The front axle has broken 3 times and even when it is not broken it is impossible to maintain the front end alignment. The frame at the front where the axle attaches has cracked and the front axle is hanging at a crazy angle and when I mow the grass the front tires are gouging the grass because they point outwards at a crazy angle.
Calls and emails to John Deere go nowhere. They always say “take it to the dealer, they should be able to fix it” but they can't. The 2 dealers I have contacted in Ontario Green Tech Ag and Turf in Winchester and Deerhaven in Belleville are terribly arrogant. Calls to the John Deere head office go nowhere. NOBODY CARES. I have to say that this relatively cheap machine has done better than most people here seem to have experienced.
Thank you to everyone here for your experience. While most of your comments appear US based, I have learnt a great deal about JD and I won't be buying one now. They have clearly been trading on a good name and are knocking out machines like everyone else, AYP, Husqvarna, etc. When you look online, you find many of these machines have the same part numbers. JD as a company does not care about customers. They are only interested in merging all of their dealers together so they can get more control over retail customers. Kubota is a customer friendly and dealer friendly company and is kicking John Deere up one side and down the other. They will overtake Deere in the farm equipment market within 10 years as they already rule the small equipment market now. Even with Kubota eating their lunch, Deere is still as arrogant as ever. Gee what a surprise! The top three things every John Deere owner in the world has complained about literally tens of thousands of times on every site on the internet showing up here too? I'll have to add this site to the list and send it to John Deere Corporate who claim they've never heard a single complaint about their hoods or their seats or their cheap mower deck spindle covers that were engineered to sit too close to the deck, trap debris and grit and cause premature secondary drive belt and spindle bearing failure. But why on earth would poor little innocent John Deere deny a universal and (IMHO) actionable design flaw in every tractor they build from their nasty, brutal and mean customers?
I wonder if it could be the only thing that is in their corporate interest...CASH? I wrote to JD and they told me to "...inquire about the problem with my dealer." I laughed till I almost ** my pants. The DEALER? You have to walk into a JD dealership with one hand protecting your wallet and the other holding a push broom to clear a path through the 30 tons of BS lying on the floor. John Deere doesn't care about customers... before or after their products go out of warranty. They see a customer as an ATM. That's right, they figure everybody that buys their products should be on their knees from day one worshiping the great God of Green and Yellow and tithing their income for the privilege of being torn a new one every time they need a pre-engineered-to-fail JD overpriced part. Which is why the gutless coward Nancy-boys at JD Corporate deflect every serious question they receive to their snake oil salesman dealers hoping to reap their 20% take for doing nothing.
John Deere hoods, seats, secondary belts and deck spindles fail prematurely on almost every tractor they sell because they are DESIGNED to fail. JD knows this, there are literally tens of thousands of documented cases and they will never do anything about it until the owners bring a class action suit against them. In the meantime, there are ways to "weld" the hood back together from the underside using a high heat setting on a decent electronic soldering iron. The method is on the internet but basically consists of temporarily tightly clamping or taping the hood crack together from the top (visible) portion of hood, then melting a furrow along the crack from the underside and folding each side back into the middle. You can then reinforce the weld by taking the hood off the tractor, sanding down the weld till its completely smooth, heating a piece of aircraft grade Plexiglas, dropping it onto the section of smooth hood that you want to reinforce, letting it "mold" to the exact shape, then epoxying it in place.
Sounds like a real PITA but it only costs about $10 as opposed to $300 and looks, well, better than a big missing chunk of green hood which is what you'll have eventually if you don't fix it. The seat has no fix besides the ubiquitous yellow duct tape, but I have heard of people using the flexible, clear pool liner repair kits with the molecular glue to seal the cracked areas before they get too big. Best solution for the spindle covers engineered to trap grit and debris and cause premature secondary belt and spindle failure is to just remove them and use your leaf blower after every mowing to blow them clear. Not all that safe, but it is effective if you are VERY careful to keep your feet off the deck and any pets or kids away from the mower when its operating...which should be a DUH anyway. Then keep the spindles well greased and you'll force most of the water and dirt out anyway.
It would behoove all JD owners to get an attorney to file a class action suit over the cracked hoods anyway. You would think with 25000+ photos and testimonials it would be a drop kick case to settle. Watch those SOBs at JD Corporate jump like a scalded pig when a 50000-person class action suit @ $500 each plus 33% attorney's fees hits their mailbox. I'm guessing that even though they ignore every customer they've ever had, a potential $35 MILLION heading out the door will catch their attention.

I bought a John Deere Z235 in April, and a week ago, I ordered a bagger and dethatcher as accessories, which cost over $800 before taxes. When I got the bagger and tried to install it, I found it was missing the mounting brackets for the hitch, that the bagger attaches to. I contacted John Deere customer service, and explained the problem. They said they could ship the missing parts within 7-10 days. I said this was not acceptable and that I wanted the missing parts overnight shipped or at least USPS Priority Mailed. They said they could not do this. I then asked to speak with the supervisor and was told that they would call me back within 2-3 business days.
I have Never in my long life encountered such poor customer service attitude. If I could I would return the riding lawn mower, as it is I will be returning the $800 plus accessories. I would Not recommend John Deere to Anyone. I had thought I was buying into a quality product and company, only to find I had bought into a Giant, and inconsiderate company. There are way too many companies that offer better riding lawn mowers out there. I was swayed by the John Deere name, even though I had thought a Kohler motor would be preferable. All I can say is, be Very careful. This company cares Not one single bit about its customers.

My name is Mark ** and I purchased a used John Deere 455 garden tractor this past summer from Koenig Equipment in Germantown, Ohio. After mowing a couple of times, I started to notice that the steering just seemed to be getting more stiff when I went to make a turn. It seemed to be better once the blades were turned off, or when I pulled down on the second hydraulic lever. I bought a new filter and the recommended fluid for the transmission to ensure that this wasn't the problem. I changed the fluids and the problem was still present. Note that I had no leaks anywhere that showed up on my concrete floor of my barn, and I saw no leaks when I changed my fluid and filter.
I contacted J.D. Equipment in Wilmington, Ohio, who is the closest dealer to me and the one I have done most of my business with. I spoke to Bob ** (Service Manager) and told him about the steering problem and he said that they would come and get it and fix it. Tom (mechanic working on my 455) told me that he would have to replace the charge pump seal, and a valve was sticking. The mechanic (Tom) also told me that there was nothing wrong with my charge pump and that it looked good. Some other small seals were in there along with the labor. This bill was over $600.00. Tom told me that I could come and pick it up, and I believe the date was August 17 or 24, 2013. I got the tractor home and was not able to try and use it until that afternoon, when the store was already closed. After just a few minutes of mowing, the steering was the same and now I had hydraulic fluid leaking onto my barn floor that hadn't happened before.
I contacted the service manager (Bob) the next Monday and told him that they still had not fixed it and now it was leaking hydraulic oil from the rear end. The dealer came and got my mower. I later received a call from the mechanic (Tom) and he said that the charge pump blew a seal again and that he was going to have to replace that again, and then he said that my power steering valve was leaking and needed to be replaced ($455.00), and that my power steering cylinder was leaking a little. I didn't understand that because I had never seen any fluid on the mower deck or in front of the deck, or even around the steering cylinder. Parts and labor for this bill was over $800.00.
The dealer brought the mower back to my home (uncertain of the date) and when I attempted to use the mower, I had the same issues. I called the dealer again and they came and got it. I got a call from the mechanic (Tom) and he said that he had some good news and that he had some bad news. He said that the good news was that he finally found the problem. He said it was inside the transaxle where someone before had put a part in wrong casing, one part to score a brass plate that kept the shaft from sliding in and out. He said that the bad news was that the parts were expensive. Brass plate was $300.00 or so, shaft was over $200.00, and that the charge pump seal blew again and that he had to replace that.
This time I drove in to talk to the service manager and to the mechanic. I asked how we were going to resolve this issue and the service manager even told me that he wasn't sure. I discussed the issues where I felt that the mechanic (I was told with over 25 years of experience) was just throwing new parts at my mower hoping that it would work. I also said that I don't understand why they don't check to make sure that something is fixed prior to taking it back to the owner. Now the mechanic was saying that the power steering valve probably was good, so I told him to put my old one back on and he said okay. They even showed me what they said the problem was.
I was there talking to them for about an hour and when I left, I was under the impression that the dealership was going to pay for all of the labor and I was going to pay for the parts from all of these misdiagnosed issues. I even said, "So my bill will be around $1,000.00?" and the service manager (Bob) said yes, that he was sorry for all of this, and that they did not want to lose me as a customer. The mechanic himself also apologized and said that he would fix it right, now that he knows what is wrong with it.
I got a phone call from Bob (Service Manager) on Friday, September 6, 2013 saying that my tractor was done and that they were going to bring it out that afternoon. I said okay and we started to discuss billing. He said that I was going to have a final bill of just over $2,000.00. I told him that he said that they were going to take care of the labor and he said no, just for this last issue. I continued to disagree but told him to bring my mower back and I was told that it was all fixed. Well, I mowed with it on Sunday, September 8, 2013, and the power steering was okay, but I noticed that hydraulic oil was leaking so I had to stop. The power steering seems to be okay, but now I have a leak that I never had until after the dealership initially worked on it. Now after being charged over $2,000.00 my mower is still not fixed.
I was even told by the service manager and the mechanic that if they knew what the issue was prior to working on the mower, they could have fixed it. That is why I called them, for them to get my mower, properly identify the problem, fix it, and to make sure that it was fixed. This is not unreasonable. I attempted to contact the service manager (Bob) on Monday, September 9, 2013 but he refused to take my calls. I even had a parts person I know at the store to ask Bob to speak with me and Bob told him no and that I need to contact their corporate service manager (Mr. **) located in London, Ohio. I called and left a message for him to call me.
I contacted my attorney, Rich **, on September 9, 2013, and he said that it sounds to him like they now have the obligation to make things right after so many chances. I contacted John Deere Corporate Headquarters on September 9, 2013, to begin a complaint against J.D. Equipment. I spoke with a Melissa and then a Steve **. I called J. D. Equipment main service manager (Mr. **) on September 9, 2013, and he said that if it is something that they did wrong, that they would fix it, but if there is another issue, even if it's in the same place, that it was basically on me. I do not have a good feeling about the integrity of this dealer.
Based on the totality of the circumstances, the multiple misdiagnosed issues, the run up of costs, the multiple inconveniences, and the lack of making sure that my mower was indeed fixed, I feel that I should not be obligated to pay for at least half of all of these costs and that J. D. Equipment should be held responsible to properly fix my garden tractor. I feel that I deserve another apology from the dealership and all that I ask for is for them to make things right by fixing my tractor. If the mechanic (Tom) was unsure about properly fixing my mower, then he should have let someone know and then let another person that did know work on it.

I don't remember how long ago I bought my L130, but I bought it from dealer because they would deliver the 20 miles for free, whereas Lowe's would not deliver 5 miles w/o a $50 charge. Apparently a stroke of luck for me, from what I've read here. I'm rough on my Deere I'll admit, but so far no engine or transmission problems, (Knock on Wood). I mow about 1 1/4 acre with the front mostly level, with a wet corner. The back is flat near the house but rises about five feet to a flat but not level area about 1/4 acre. I have about 45 to 50 trees that I have to mow around. There is also a garage, shed, numerous gardens and plants, A dump truck, tractor, pickup, kids' play area, poles, stumps and about fifteen piles of fill dirt. Obviously an obstacle course, which is not always navigated successfully. I've snagged the deck, bumped the tires and slid into things when it's wet (Thank God for the bumper).
It early on began mowing unevenly and was especially bad on corners where it would miss and drop clumps of wet grass clippings from under the deck where it gathered. I've long since given up trying to "level" the deck and learned to mow effectively. The guide wheels on the deck are worn to a taper and have had their brackets straightened numerous times and reinforced twice, but still bend at grotesque angles (a design problem). My biggest complaint is with the steering. I noticed that the wheels toed out and made it difficult to steer and to hold straight line. In really tight turn, the wheels would lock jerking the steering wheel, and your arms with it, while the outside tire pushes sideways jerking you to stop. (It has even pushed the tire on the rim breaking the seal and deflating the tire. I also tore my rotator cuff and had surgery from one of those incidents.)
In attempts to cure this problem I adjusted the tie rods to the max, straightened and/or bent the flat parts on the spindles and still it would toe out after a while. Then last year while I was recovering from surgery, my wife was mowing when the cast iron front axle broke in half and nose-dived to an abrupt halt nearly throwing her over the front of the tractor. My physical therapy became replacing the axle and associated bolts, washers, clips, and while I was at it, the tie rods, the steering sector and pinion gear. That is all I could afford. It was hard work and more so, with the rotator cuff surgery so recent.
All well and good, new parts, everything greased, lubricated and tightened up I started the new mowing season. Two mowings later, the wheels toed out again. I shortened the new tie rods to the max. Two more mowings and toed out again. I cut an inch off of one of the tie rod adjusters and tightened that up. I mowed some more and hauled about ten to twelve trailer loads of fill dirt, mowed again and about half the way finished, rounded a corner and the left front wheel came off. I had never removed them from the spindles so it was not poorly executed reassembly. The little yellow soft plastic hub cover was thrown under the mower and shredded to nothingness. Lucky for me, I had purchased a set of clip rings and found one to replace the one that failed and I repaired that. While mowing two weeks ago and nearly finished the cast iron front axle broke in half AGAIN (!!!) nearly throwing me over the front of the tractor when it nose-dived to a sudden stop.
I see now that this is a common occurrence, among others. I'm long out of warranty so I guess it is on me to fix. But I will try to get something else to replace it before I have more problems. I'm thinking Cub Cadet, Kubota or Husqvarna.

We bought a John Deere 757 with a 25hp Kawasaki engine new from East Coast Equipment in 2008. We had no problems until October 2012, when the mower had 342 hours. The motor had to be taken apart and cleaned at a cost of 900 dollars. They blamed it on poor maintenance even though we have not had a problem with any other component of the lawn mower. We greased the mower every time before use. Spark plugs, oil, and filters were replaced as suggested by the owners manual. In April of 2013, with 2 weeks (12 hours) on a brand new John Deere drive belt, the belt broke because the motor was so hot. The dipstick was stuck and could not be pulled out (with a rag because it was too hot to touch) due to the heat of the motor. We took it to East Coast Equipment, where we bought the mower and had the work done in October of 2012, and after a week with the mower in their shop, they said there was nothing wrong with it and put a new drive belt on.
Finally, in August 2013, with 402 hours, the motor died for good. East Coast Equipment and John Deere stated it was not their problem since the mower was out of warranty. Now on a mower with 402 hours on it, we are having to put a new motor in. The design of the motor was horrible, and Kawasaki and John Deere should be ashamed for such a poorly built product. I would encourage everyone to buy anything except John Deere when it comes to lawn mowers.

I will never buy another lawn mower from Lowe's again. The LA175 54" cut is basically a second from the same product sold at John Deere stores. I have nothing good to say about this LA175. Many repairs over the 5 years. I was told at the John Deere store that the machine I purchased was a downgrade from what they sold. If I were to buy another John Deere (not likely), I would pay the difference and go directly to John Deere store. I believe that a disclaimer should be issued at stores selling John Deere products that states that these mowers are a downgrade from the ones sold at John Deere stores.

Bought my L120 new at Home Depot around maybe 2005. First one I bought had a Kohler engine and it smoked like a freight train so they gave me another with a V Twin engine Briggs. Everything was good till 2011. Then the PTO got hot and stopped working. I bought another new one and put it on and a belt. Just last month that PTO got hot and noticed the smell of oil. So I pulled it around to the back of the house and shut it off. Suddenly it burst into flames and was on fire. I grabbed the water hose and put it out. Also my deck bearings were real noisy so I bought new deck spindles and a new PTO with a oil seal for the engine and blades and belts. Took it to the shop and had them fix everything but found out my leak was from the bottom engine gasket. Just got it back 2 days ago.
You always had to crank on it a while before the fuel would get to the engine and start since it was new. Wow! Now it cranks right up. Started today to give it a test run and mowed just a few rounds maybe of 5 minutes. When I shut it off it was smoking again from the new PTO and was running hot. I parked it and drove straight down and bought a new Gravely ZTHD 48 inch zero turn mower for around $5000 and it will be delivered this afternoon. I'm not putting anymore money in this piece of crap made by JD. I put everything new on to fix it and it still not right. I had a Toro I bought before I bought this JD that lasted 16 years with nothing but a couple new blades and belts. I'm through with JD and will never buy another.

We have a leak in a seal, so we need to replace the seal, which would only cost a couple of dollars; however, John Deere makes you purchase an entire new transmission, almost $700! Unbelievable, when we purchased a John Deere we expected this equipment to last much longer than it did. When it is not in use, it is kept in the garage and we take care of the oil and belt changes when needed, but now we have to replace a transmission at $700 over a $2 part.... Wow John Deere.

I have a 420 John Deere with a 54 inch deck. I let my grass grow to 5" and mow 3 1/2" high. My mower deck is clean, blades are sharp, and I don't go fast. It will NOT stand up the grass and cut the grass that the front tires mash down. If you mow your grass 2 inches high, about any mower will do a decent job. I have talked to other John Deere owners who prize their lawns and they all have the same complaints. Personally, I think the problem is that the blades don't turn at the correct speed to suck the grass up. Needless to say, I will possibly never own another John Deere mower.

I repair farm tractors and mowers and I love Deeres. They keep me in business. It doesn't matter what model you get either. I replace more rear-ends and front axles on Deere mowers than I do on cheap Walmart MTD mowers and the cost for parts are ridiculous. Honestly the days of mowers lasting ten+ yrs came to an end several yrs ago. Unless you spend well over $5k-$6k and even then you better do your research. I noticed this yrs ago and bought some old Case mowers that were in decent shape for myself. They just don't build any mowers like them today. You can repair all major parts not just replace them with another junk part that will fail just as fast.
I knew a farmer who had 4 new JD tractors. Not one would start after the third yr and he had to use his Masseys to work his feilds. Said he was glad he kept the Massey tractors and the Deeres will be sold when he can get parts to make them run. He sold them all too. Some of his Masseys were from the 60s. Now that is sad, folks.

Had I known JD does not adequately support the distribution of their mower parts... I would not have purchased the mower. Every mower has consumable parts; JD does not support aftermarket suppliers and everyone claims JD is restrictive on what they can shelve in their store. Lowe's as a John Deere retailer displays less John Deere parts than any other mower they sell. The consequences are that every time I need a part (this is not my first time) I must either pay others to mow my yard until the parts come in or pay inflated handling charges if I order it online. Great mower but poor operational practices from John Deere... I would not recommend products from John Deere because of this.

John Deere D100 - I bought this tractor new at Lowe's to use on my 1 acre mostly flat lot. It performed well for the first season. However the single pedal brake/clutch causes very jerky starts. Combined with a shift lever that only uses arrows on a pathway to mark gears, moving through the gears is akin to starting an old truck by getting it rolling and popping the clutch. The tires are very fragile and go flat anytime you hit anything with thorns, which we have plenty of where I live. After less than 10 hours operation, putting it in gear doesn't do anything. I thought it wasn't surprising that clutch/brake would need adjusting since it is so ambiguous about where the gears are. Unfortunately, the clutch is not adjustable.
I guess I'm just supposed to buy a new transmission when the clutch needs adjusting. This is very disappointing, since my older model with automatic transmission was adjustable. I got the manual transmission because I thought it would be sturdier for pulling a cart. Boy was I wrong.

I did rebuild the original axle with factory parts, but it began failing after 10 more hours of use. This machine is 5 years old with exactly 102 hours on the meter. I paid almost $4,000 for it out the door at Lowe’s and have another $2,000 in it just to keep it moving.
Now, I need another $100 for front spindles that are worn out even though it was lubed at LEAST 4 times more than recommended. John Deere is after one thing - your hard earned money. I have had some repairs in the last 2 years. I left this great machine out in the elements and it has suffered. The plastic got brittle and broke. It may not be pretty but it works great, 15 years in service. I just got the fever again and bought a 1025R diesel. Wow! Big difference, more power and 4-wheel drive. I have read some of these complaints and I think many of the problems are with not so good dealers. I am lucky we have a great one in the Plattsburgh, NY area. I can have a loaner if needed. At home, after removing the top air fin for inspection, we found rust, rust and more rust. Even the engine housing was pitted from rust. The John Deere Customer Contact Center suggested we return the mower and visit a different dealer. We learned from numerous phone calls (locally and in 3 surrounding cities) that EVERY John Deere D130 had rust problems.
Contact #2 to John Deere Customer Center, I was told that only a supervisor would review our case and call back in approximately THREE (3) DAYS. Three days? Totally unacceptable! Their Operator's Manual says they have a "process to handle your questions or problems." They certainly do. The process is to stall the customer, delay contact with a representative that can authorize complaint resolutions, and say "I'm sorry" over and over and over. The repetitive apologies were as close as we got to "CUSTOMER SERVICE" throughout this process.
Anyone considering purchasing a John Deere D130 should request in-store removal of the air fin prior to purchase and check it well. Regarding the 3-day wait for a return call: Is John Deere so terribly understaffed or has the complaint volume increased to an unmanageable level? Either way, this is poor business practice. (2) My lawn tractor has only done 170 hrs and the gearbox is making a crunching sound in 3rd and 4th gears, so it looks like I will have to get a new gearbox for it. It is 5 years old, and as I said, it has only done 170 hrs and the gearbox has gone, not good advertising for Deere. I have a 1998 John Deere F725 54" Front Mower that I absolutely love. I have always done the maintenance on this mower myself and have also abused the heck out of it. I have used the hydraulic blade deck lift to pick up the front of my boat trailer, utility trailer, and camper to move them out of the way so I could mow under them. I have used a tow strap to move cars around with it. I also have a 2" ball on the back that I have used to move a 2,200-lb flatbed trailer with a Chevrolet M1008 1 1/4ton military truck on it.
This year is the first year I have had any major issues with it. I lost spark on the left cylinder on the Kawasaki V-Twin. I replaced the pulser coil and it was back to 100%. I love having the blade deck on the front since I can nose it up under decks, fences, bushes, and anything else in someone’s yard that I may have to normally trim around or under. I can also use the lift to hold the blade deck up slightly while I nose it up to ditch banks, hills, uneven terrain, and to knock down tall brush.
This mower drives like a forklift with its rear steering. It's not a zero turn mower but with its offset deck, it only leaves about an 8" diameter patch of grass when you turn hard left which can easily be knocked out by backing up about a foot (with the reverse pedal) after completing your turn. The mower can even fit through a 48" gate even though the blade deck is 54" on mine. With the grass shoot up (or removed), you just enter the gate at an angle getting the left side of the deck in first then turn hard left, and the left side of the blade deck will just go around the post.
If they still made this mower today, I would recommend it to anyone looking to purchase the last mower they will ever need. If you can't afford a good John Deere, I would recommend you buy a Cub Cadet from Tractor Supply. I have used model LGT-1054 with a 54" deck, and it seemed to be well built and mowed great. It was very comfortable. I would just stay away from the cheap mowers from Lowe’s and Home Depot even though they may have the John Deere name on them. I would also stay away from zero turn mowers unless you like having to pull them out of the ditch often. Remember, a zero turn steers with its drive tires so if you get one wheel in slippery/soft terrain (like the ditch), your other wheel will just steer you toward the terrain that your other wheel has no traction in.

An area dealer brought several of these defective tractors to an auction in Lebanon, WI. I tested it as much as I could before spending the $850.00 for this mower with 400hrs. Two mows later on a 1-acre lot, the mower stops rolling after 15minutes. After calls to the organizers of the auction telling them of this, they are not interested in looking up who the dealer was to help me contact them. (They may not have cared anyway.) My best advice is to not buy any used JD product at all. You cannot test enough to make sure you're not buying someone else's JD junk.

I purchased new from Home Depot in 2005. I had problems with PCV valve within first year, in for repairs and covered under warranty. Okay, but a hassle. I religiously changed and checked oil as recommended. In 2010, the motor seized. Service dept at local JD authorized dealer said the oil was low and seized because of lack of lubrication. Cost to replace motor is approx. $1,200, which is ridiculous. After looking into complaints about this specific model, it appears that the Briggs motor used in this model has been terrible and unreliable for many customers. Numerous reports of the same motor seizing from mechanics and professional lawn care people who were animate that regular maintenance was done.
As a product manager by profession, I understand the value of standing behind my product as well as knowing my product and all things related to my product. If I were John Deere, this would be a situation where there needs to be a support plan for people adversely affected by one of their products (even if no fault of JD - except for using a sub quality engine supplier B&S). Neither the dealer nor the company (JD) would do or offer any kind of explanation or support and this is unacceptable as a consumer. As a father of three young children and this being my first experience with JD, it is very clear that there will be generations of my family and friends who will NOT be John Deere/B&S customers. If you are considering buying a John Deere or Briggs & Stratton powered anything, please consider your alternatives. As a BIG company, John Deere has completely forgotten about who got them there.

I purchased three new John Deere lawn tractors during the last 20 years. The last one I purchased was an LT 16042C at a cost of close to $3,000. After spending $8,000 on lawn tractors, I considered myself a good customer. The LT 160042C blew smoke out of the exhaust when starting and would bog down at times. I visited the dealer on several occasions to report it. The dealer said all mowers do that now. It was hard for me to believe that but I trusted them, after all, it's a John Deere. About four years later, I received a Consumer Notice that said the HP of the engine on my tractor was overstated and that is was lower than advertised and that a class action lawsuit was being filed. I looked into it and it was 12HP instead of the 16HP listed in the specifications.
I went to local JD dealer where I purchased it and told them about the notice. This was likely the reason for smoking during start up and the bogging down. The dealer said JD stopped carrying that engine because of all the problems. They said my warranty had expired and that I would have to go to John Deere itself with my complaint. I forwarded my complaints to JD Headquarters which were: my tractor did not meet the JD Specifications given to me at purchase (16HP was specified) and it blew smoke during start up and bogged down at times. Someone named Joanne from JD called and said issues like this are handled at the dealer level. I got the runaround. So much for JD quality control, customer satisfaction and John Deere tractors.

I bought a 757 zero turn at 300 hours. I put my first head gasket on. Some 300 hours later, I put another head gasket on myself because I could not afford another $300 again. At 1,100 hours, I had to rebuild one side of the motor for $1200. It’s now at 1,300 hours, and it blew rodes again and needs a new head. John Deere says they can fix it if I buy a screen kit for $400 and pay for 2-hour labor. Why should I have to pay even more money to fix a manufacturer problem? Why did they not tell me this at 300 hrs when they put the first head gasket on. At $2,000 later in repairs alone, I’ve purchased a toro because my lawn care business could not be on hold for my John Deere to be fixed yet again. I’m wondering how they can get by with this. My tractor only has 180 hours on it. Several days ago while cutting grass, I heard a loud noise coming from the mower deck. I immediately stopped the tractor and looked at the deck. The idler pulley, the shaft and bearings broke off for no apparent reason. The dealer picked up my mower. Charge is $35. Estimate is $42. I don't understand that when it was obvious what needed to be done. Dealer called today and told me to repair was a total of $282. I had to keep asking for a breakdown and hesitantly told me that the parts were $ 64. I was shocked.
I could have done the work myself in about an hour. Their service charges are outrageous. He told me that the bearings froze and caused the pulley to break off, and that the bearings can't be lubricated. So why did they freeze? I could get no satisfaction from the dealer. I went to John Deere website but there is no method to make a complaint. I previously had a Craftsman for 12 years with no problems except several belts replaced and usual maintenance. I expected the same from the JD product but did not get it. I will never buy another JD product.

I guess I shouldn't complain too loudly because I got this LA115 at 1 year old, with 68 hours on it for $500 from a neighbor whose job was relocating him and his new home and only had a lawn the size of a decent size living room. Since he had no need of a rider and moving it from Delaware to Washington State was going to cost more than a decent Honda push mower, he sold it to me for the cost of his new Honda. That said, here is what I have dealt with on a now 2.5 year old mower with 162 hours on it: It has needed 2 deck belts, one traction belt; the brackets that support the deck needed to be welded back on; the blades have needed replacement 3 times; the engine won't cut grass without the choke 1/2 engaged (I need a fuel pump for it); and when running, it will sometimes belch out a huge cloud of thick white smoke. It also sometimes refuses to move when cutting the grass for a while. I also have a flat, level yard, so it doesn't have hills to contend with.
Before anyone questions my ability, let me make it known that I am an ASE Certified master automobile technician, and Master Medium/Heavy truck technician. I have a 1996 F-150 with 319,999 miles on it, which is all original except the water pump, the alternator and the clutch (I just installed the second one). I routinely pull a 7,000 lb trailer with this truck as well. I know how to maintain and conserve my equipment for long life. However, you can't make crap into gold. My John Deere is built just like my old (nearly as useless) Craftsman tractor. Have you ever noticed that all lawn tractors look the same, use the same types of parts and are built the same? Could it be that all the companies marketing lawn tractors are just buying their units from AYP (American Yard Products) or Yard Machines?
It seems to me that you only have three viable options if you are mowing a large yard: 1) Get a decent, self propelled walk behind Honda mower and get some exercise; 2) Buy the cheapest lawn tractor you can get and hope it lasts 5 years because the brand simply doesn't matter; 3) Buy a garden tractor, which is overkill for mowing the lawn, but will last a lifetime. When this gives out, it looks like I'll be getting more exercise. I won't buy another lawn tractor, and I can't justify buying a garden tractor for a 1.1 acre yard. A Honda push mower is on the horizon for me.

My son bought me a John Deere 120. On the first year, it ran great and had no problems. After every use, I would blow off all the grass from the deck and under to keep it clean and also dry. I stored it in a garage over the winter. About a month into the second season, the deck was shot! The weld broke and holes around the bolts tore out! I went to our dealer in town and was told that John Deere would not help fix it because they would claim that it was abused. To buy a new deck was almost as much as the whole mower cost. A friend was finally able to build a plate to weld the deck back onto and with a lot a babying, it has been doing okay.
When I parked it (back in the garage) last fall, it was fine, but when I went out to start it for the first time this season, it has no steering! Nothing at all. I really dislike this stupid mower and John Deere should hang their heads in shame over what they have become. A 3 year old mower that has been well taken care of should not have issues such as a rotted out deck and steering problems! I am disabled and live on a very small income and now, somehow, I am going to have to purchase a new mower! Thanks John Deere!

I do not recommend this lawn mower for anyone. It has "PPD" - pretty poor design! As mowing season approaches, I am shopping for a replacement to this, our relatively new JS 28 (used 5-6 times), a walk-behind, self-propelled lawnmower. It runs and cuts, but design is not well thought out or apparently tested to any significant degree. Tendonitis is not deadly, but unpleasant; and as a professional musician, I need fully functional arms, wrists and arm muscles/tendons! Unfortunately, the design of the JS 28 induces significant tendonitis in both arms!
The main problem concerns the engage and disengage bar, which requires rolling both arms at the wrists for every turn, stop, slowing down, adjustment for obstacles, etc., during the course of normal mowing of our medium size lawn. By rough calculation, that may be 100-200 times per mowing! Initially, it was a feature I questioned for durability - thinking it might be prone to mechanical problems - but liked the name and other basic features from looking passively at and comparing those with all the showroom models. It was not allowed to start up in Lowe's of course!
I didn't realize what was the cause of physical problems for myself and my wife until my physical therapist figured it out. I started treatment for tendonitis about 2 weeks after purchase and initial use. I had mowed 5-6 times from mid-August to late September. Symptoms started within a week of purchase and subsided after mowings ended in fall. Also, my helpful athletic wife complained of similar symptoms after helping with our weekly cuttings. Our lawn is a fairly average suburban lawn, approximately 1/3 acre of lawn.
I’m just very disappointed in John Deere and also their lack of willingness to admit responsibility for poor design and testing of a common household/lawn product. Also, they will not give any credit, so next lawnmower will not be a John Deere! Truly sad, because initially, I was excited to have a John Deere and chose this from a Lowe's showroom. Picking out a mower from the showroom, I was not able to actually test-drive. But we perused the features, as best as we could, and it looked like a typical lawn mower! Actually, I liked some of the features, and since I trusted the name (Hey, dad was an Iowa farm boy and loved John Deere). My only recompense is that good old Lowe's is willing to give some credit for a new purchase... which helps, but is also sad, because they really have to take the hit for John Deere's PPD and lack of responsibility for a bad idea, gone to market… Buyer Beware.

I bought a BB4296 Frontier blade. I used it behind a John Deere 5525 which is a 90 hp. The dealer was Quality Equipment in Burlington, NC. Within the warranty period, the first issue was the scafiers falling out. The cheesy keepers wore a little bit and the shanks would fall out up or down. This blade has a hydraulic scafier bar. Joe with Quality first recommended driving a bolt behind them and took one of the keepers with him and I never heard anymore about that. Second, the mast for the top link tore loose from the tube while panning dirt. There was a cat 1 pin hole in the top link. This is an 8-foot blade, cat 1 is a little light, pins were a problem and caused some top link damage. The dealer told me I was turning left with the shanks in ground and caused the damage and there was no warranty coverage.
This is completely bogus. While my blade has been used, it has not been abused. We do not buy an over 3000-dollar blade to carry around and say look what I got, box blades are not warm and fuzzy. John Deere has give me the same BS runaround and told me to call Monroe Tufline who builds the blade and maybe they would help me. I am completely dissatisfied with this and surprised that John Deere sells a Gannon knockoff blade with such poor quality metal. I am on my second call to Monroe Tufline. I purchased a Gator 825i from Quality Equipment in Burlington, NC. Gator was a lemon and had transmission problems. The dealer wasn't able to fix the problem and John Deere and Quality Equipment would not allow me to trade the unit for another, and did not fix the unit for me. I took a $4,000 loss on unit in a one-year period. The dealership owner/manager told me he couldn't find anything wrong with the unit; John Deere wasn't going to put any more money into the unit; and that I didn't know how to drive the Gator - this was my third Gator and the other two I had not had any problems. The person who purchased the Gator had the same problem with it as I did the first day he drove the Gator and Quality was able to fix the unit for new buyer by putting a clutch in the unit.
I'd already purchased two tractor outfits from the dealership and helped the salesman sell another tractor unit. I contacted John Deere's customer service and sent a registered complaint letter to John Deere to explain what had happened. The first two registered letters, John Deere made out like they had not received them and that they may have been destroyed. The third letter was received and customer service basely told me to jump in the river - case closed. I then sent a fourth registered letter to John Deere's home office and have not heard from them as of this writing.
Since all of this has occurred, I've found out the dealership has had to put clutches in other Gators having problems - which may have solved the transmission problem with 825i Gators. However, that didn't help me since the dealership would not fix the Gator I had. Can't recommend doing business with Quality Equipment in Burlington, NC and John Deere. This complaint is solely about the dealership and John Deere not standing behind their product (Gator) and doing what was right about fixing and resolving the problem with a bad unit. I've not had any problems with my tractor and other equipment.

I bought this mower from Lowe's for my mother about 4 1/2 years ago. It worked great. A few days ago, the bearing assembly fell through the deck because all 4 mounting holes were wallowed out. No warning at all. John Deere claims it is because we hit something. The real problem is a design flaw. The bolt head flanges are too small to support the torque. I took it to the local dealer. They sent it in to John Deere and they denied any help due to hitting something. I called John Deere myself again. They review it and called me back. The woman I spoke with told me they were not going to do anything, not that they could not, they would not. It was not a design flaw, did not even want to hear the solution I had, that I saw on another lawn mower to avoid the problem, and was very condescending to me. After telling me they were giving me no help, she hung up on me.
I’m getting with the local TV station to get the word out about the defect and I will build the pieces to fix it. I called Lowe's Corporate to let them know how I was treated, they were not happy. I may have to spend the $500 for a new deck before it is over with, but will have it with the fix to prevent it from happening again. But I will never buy any John Deere product again of any type. They appear to know about the defect. But instead of fixing the problem, they would prefer to sell more decks instead. In my opinion, that is stealing from the public. I take care of the VA Grounds here and the unit gets a lot of use. I understand wearable parts skids cutting blade etc. But the frame cracking is beyond the normal wear and tear.
Local dealer answer is over the 1000 hr mark. He has no help. Every online JD support site sends me back to local dealer. Metal that the grass bagger is made out of is 1/3 thicker than the frame. The frame has an inboard lower lip for the front 2/3 of the length and just before area that transaxle has bolted the frame lip bends and now is on the outside. This is where the axle is bolted to frame and this is the point where the frame on both side fatigued and broke/ripped or whatever you want to call it.
You don’t have to be a genius to see that this bend is the weakest part of the frame and also the most force absorbing area from the drive/steering force. My thought is every recall has to start somewhere. I had a 325 doing the same job for 6 years and it still runs. So the "Your too tough on the equipment" is a poor excuse. With the recommended oil change (first one at 50 hours and every 200 hours after that), this transaxle will perform for many hours/years if not abused. We have had nothing but problems from these mowers. They are in the shop every year. They eat belts, eat blades, front axle broke in half on one, it is always something. The front tires on mine are now toeing out. I figure it is only a matter of time before the axle breaks on it also. Keep in mind that I only mow an acre or less. I will never ever buy anything else from John Deere. I asked the local dealer if he had anything besides a John Deere I could trade this piece of junk in for. Of course, he only sells John Deere. I told him, being a Christian prohibits me from telling him how I really feel about John Deere products. Heaven help you should you use John Deere to service the thing for you! Please get an estimate before agreeing to let them do any work. I wish John Deere would man up and make this right. I think I am just going to sell it and buy a Gravely Zero turn mower, which is what replaced my dad's John Deere.

We contacted Larson's Tractor, John Deere dealership in West Plains, MO, to trade a used Lx279 for a JD push mower. We are moving and no longer need a large riding mower. On the phone, Larson's stated that "sight unseen we would even trade for a Honda push mower" around $600. After arriving at the store, the manager stated that they would not do that because "there was no ID sticker on it and those were bolted on" and we are thieves and we stole that mower. I have never been so mortified in my life! But they would only offer half of their original offer ($300). We drove home, found the ID sticker with the PIN number and the owner's manual. I am not sure what our next step is, but I know we will never ever be John Deere customers again!

My story is sadly similar to other complaints about JD transmission problems. I have a five year old LA140 riding mower, less than 100 hours on the odometer. The transmission failed to drive the mower after running 20 minutes. The local JD dealer replaced it for $850. My extended warranty expired the previous year. I wrote John Deere corporate a polite letter asking for help with half the cost of the repair. They eventually responded "no, but here's a discount coupon for future parts". My recommendation; do not buy John Deere riding mowers. Their transmissions are unreliable and expensive to repair.

Last Thursday, I was attempting to park our John Deere 757 zero turn mower, which was idling. I had backed it up almost to the carport door, which was down at the time, when suddenly it started flying backwards out of control. I was hurled into the carport door from the back and it was curling around each side of me as the mower was going backwards at a high rate of speed. I was bending my head and neck down into the mower trying to protect myself. Then, just as suddenly, it started going forward and the carport door was hung on the rollover bar. This jerked the mower into a standup position with me still in the seat and pinned into the carport door. Finally, the carport door came loose from the bar after ripping out all of the bolts from the frame of the door and slammed the mower to the ground. I turned the key off and went into my house hysterical. I was shaking and trembling so bad I could hardly talk, along with hyperventilating and throwing up. I went to the ER in Oxford, MS where x-rays showed no broken bones; only bruised muscles, sprains and strains. I was given an injection of Morphine and Phenergan for pain, and a prescription for Lortab and Flexeril for pain and muscle spasms.

I purchased a John Deere 190C in April 2006 at the Big Box stores for over $3,000. I put 119 hours on it and last year the k62v transaxle went out. I sent it down to the local JD supplier whose sticker was on the machine, only to find out that for $1,800, they would replace the transaxle. I inquired if it could be fixed and was informed that it was a sealed unit and they could not work on it. I researched and found the transaxle was from Tuf Torq with the parts diagram. On top of that, the majority of the tractor was, in fact, only parts put together and called a John Deere. I paid $3,000 for a name. Buyer beware, if they had called it a mutt and priced it accordingly, I wouldn't have called it a John Deere.

I purchased an X320 lawn tractor on late 2009. It mowed one season and then the mower started throwing the main drive belt. Then the idler tensioner went out. I tore the lawn mower down and took parts to Bridgeport EQ Marietta. I gave them tensioner. Altogether, they gave me back a bag of parts with no diagram and said they did not have one. Then I called one of their mechanics and told him the problem I’m having. He said he can only give me half the parts and to come back and he would get parts from my old tensioner. That was the third trip to dealership and I have to drive 25 miles. After getting the mower back together, I accidentally spun the main blade belt. I went in the 4th time and talked to the manager and told him what I have done. I asked if he could help me out. He said John Deere pays for all warranty work. I wasn’t doing him any favors by working on it and he would not help me at all. I have purchased three new tractors. I will never purchase another one. The manager said he didn’t care either. I cannot use it any longer because it loses power and slows down, and will not do the job.

I purchased a John Deere. I walked behind the self-propelled mower from Lowe's last year, and it hit a small stump in my yard and the shaft that the blade is attached to was bent. The mower cost $350. The estimate to fix was $275 to $300. Bending a shaft on a lawnmower is a common occurrence and used to cost about fifty cents to fix, as all you had to do was replace a small metal piece that connected the motor to the shaft. It took about 5 minutes to fix. Keep in mind this was not a "massive" type of accident; any fix to the shaft would cost almost the entire cost of the mower to fix.
At the time of purchase, the Lowe's salesman talked me into the extended warranty as "it covers everything." When I talked to Lowe's, they said, "No, that is not covered by the warranty." Ok, I will bite the bullet on that one for believing the salesman and not checking on that myself. I got the number for the "higher up" complaint people and talked with them, and they said the same thing.
So now, I went the the John Deere people, and they said, "Yes, that is how much the repair costs are to fix a bent shaft; nothing we can do for you." Here is my point: fixing a common problem on a mower should not cost anywhere close to the entire new cost of the mower. Let's say, you buy a new car for $35,000 and you have a "common" fender bender. It will probably cost you $2000 to $5000 to fix. In this case, you would have to pay $30,000 to fix the $35,000 car!

I purchased a Deere LA130 tractor four years ago and currently only have 260 hours on it, and very dissatisfied with the quality. I performed the maintenance as required, but it didn't appear to help. First, I had to replace the front wheel spindles as they were severely worn even though I greased them as required. While doing so, I noted the front wheels have bushings rather than bearings. Another poor design. At the least, you would think the bushings should wear before the spindles, but not the case.
Then, I noted the steering assembly (gears) was severely worn. I replaced them as well. After doing all of these repairs, I noted the front wheels are slightly out of alignment. Guess what? No tie rod adjustment can be made. I also looked at new Deere riding mowers on display and noted some of them appear to have the front wheels out of alignment. And now to top it all off, my hydrostatic transmission went out.
I bought a new one at about $600.00. The manufacturer (Tuff Torq) of this transmission recommends 5W-50 synthetic to be used to increase the life of this transmission in heavy duty operation. Normally, it has SAE 10W-30 in it and is supposed to not require replacement. Deere should have done better and put the synthetic in to start with and make it so you can replace it at a specified interval. Very disappointed and will never buy another John Deere tractor again.

My 2005 L108 get the "spring maintenance special" every year. This year, upon its return a month after pickup, there was an immediate smell of gas fumes. I stored it in the basement, where the HVAC system is. Lo and behold, the smell permeated the house. I moved it up to the garage and the smell still made it into the rafters, then down through some old HVAC vents (which apparently were not sealed when they should have been). I inspected the tractor a number of times. No visible leaks. I washed it 4 times in 2 weeks, thinking they spilled something on it when they replaced a gasket during the servicing. It still had bad gasoline smell. I had to keep the garage door open all day to try to keep it from making us sick.
I finally called the dealer and told them. They picked it up 5 days later. Next day, I got a call. The gas tank is leaking at the seams. I told them it was not like that when I sent it to them for service and this tractor is outside only to mow. They said of course, that it is nothing that they did. They gave me a number to call John Deere and a service order bulletin number that says to keep this problem from happening, to install a support bracket. I called John Deere, they sent me right to a customer service rep "who can help you with this problem". Starting to smell a rat yet? She courteously took my info and the info for the dealer. She said she'll call them to get the story on "how it happened". This was at 1:00PM.
Next morning, at 8:00AM sharp, I got a call saying that they will replace the tank at no charge ($100 retail, their cost, $5.00), but not paying the labor to replace it ($400 my cost!). No budging. What can you do? Pay $2000 for a comparable replacement? What gets me is that it was too easy! They obviously know that there is a problem with this tank, they have a service bulletin on how to prevent it from happening. But this was not conveyed to the general public. The old, "if they don't think they have a problem, don't tell them they have one". The dealer told me they keep these tanks in stock because they replace so many of them! And I was told that there was not a recall on it, only the service bulletin.
The customer service rep said that it was not a safety issue! Oh my God! Sitting on a sweating piece of dynamite and it's not a safety issue? And that's not even considering the asphyxiation issue with the fumes in the house! Neither the dealer or the company is going to budge, I'm sure. To do so would create a potential liability issue. I'm actually surprised that they are replacing the tank. Isn't that also admitting responsibility? It is also obvious to me that there was a procedure in place for this situation. So if they know about it, they are liable for it. It's not just another part. It's the ** gas tank splitting at the seams! Boom! **! And I'm being really nice there! I'm not done yet. It would not be ruined if proper instructions had been given for transmission maintenance. I bought it from an Alaska John Deere dealer with a Snow blower attachment. The Dealer (John Deere), should know that snow removal is the hardest work, the L130 could be used for. John Deere should have known that without additional maintenance, it would not be up to the task.
It would have been up to the task if J. Deere had advised proper maintenance in the instructions in the first place. Instead, I was told the transmission was a sealed no-maintenance transmission. It is not sealed and it is not a no-maintenance transmission. Maintenance that would have kept this transmission performing well for many more years than it has been, could have been performed but was in effect, discouraged by John Deere's calling it "sealed" and "no-maintenance". I could see the failure of the transmission progressing over the years but was led to believe there was nothing I could do about it. I already put $500.00 into it when the mower was one month out of warranty. Add the original cost of the mower, the $500 and now another $800—this is costing us a fortune. We cannot afford to put anymore money in this piece of garbage. In reading these complaints, it sounds like Shatiqua is pacifying everyone by telling them they will help pay for repairs, but when it comes time to deliver they are not delivering. I read that the primary cause of engine failure is the ethanol blend of gas.
Well, that is all they sell in this area. If that's the case, why is John Deere selling their mowers in the Pacific Northwest if that’s the case? How are we supposed to find non-blended fuel to fill the mower? The other defense I have heard Deere give is to blame the homeowner saying they didn't have enough oil. Yeah, right, like many homeowners with the same problem all forgot to check the engine oil. We are out the original cost of the mower, plus $500.00 and now need another $800 to replace the engine. My John Deere LA175 has less than 150 hours on it. It has been a solid grass cutter for the past 2 years cutting my 2 acres. Out of the blue, I couldn't make it up a slight incline on my property. I called Lowes and as luck would have it, my warranty expired 2 months ago. They passed me on to John Deere. I spoke and gave all info to customer service. I was told to bring tractor to dealer to access what was needed and perhaps John Deere could help.
The dealer said I needed a new transmission and steering which would be $1,200 but the dealer said, John Deere may be able to assist. John Deere called and said there was nothing they could do as the transmission broke due to application and that even if it was still under warranty they would not cover due to application. I explained that I only cut grass on less acreage than what the tractor is rated for (2 acres vs 2.5+) and have very few inclines. They "supervisor" Shaquista from John Deere said sorry and that there is nothing they can do as it broke due to the application. I called the local Deere dealer which services my tractor complaining, and he was surprised and thought they would help.
I am utterly disappointed as I thought I was buying a Deere and would get a quality backed product. I feel sorry for the local dealer as I wanted to eventually upgrade to a X500 (so I could plow my driveway) but I will not buy another Deere. They do not stand behind their products they sell and misrepresent the LA series as quality Deere products sold at Lowes and Home Depot.
I have looked everywhere and called the John Deere supervisor to provide in writing where it states what the application of the LA 175 tractor is and how I mis-used the application. My call has not been returned. I thought spending close to $4,000 (with taxes) would have bought me something that would have lasted longer than 150 hours.
I now have to find the $1,200 to fix so I can sell it and buy some other brand. Deere does not equal quality, reliability or service.
John Deere, Lowes and Home Depot should be sued for mis-representing the Deere products they sell. There seems to be a known issue with these transmissions, yet no where on JohnDeere.com or the specs in brochure does it say to mow on flat land only.

We bought a JD x340 "lawn & garden" tractor back in 2009. We went with JD because of their "g-r-e-a-t reputation" and thought we would have a piece of equipment that would do what we needed it to do and would last us maybe not a lifetime, but a good many years from a long standing company that stands behind its name. That was our first mistake...thinking. We should have done some research first.
Anyway, we have a small farm that all we do with it is cut grass and drag the pasture in places it is needed. Well for the garden part of "Lil' John", the small light drag we have, it's too much for it. You can hear it sounding sluggish (so we use our "86" Chevy Suburban to do that job now). The plastic hood split after a year. We are going to have to replace the spindles and bearings and had problems with the deck.
Adding salt to the wound is the JD Finance Co. revolving account. They give you 10 days grace period, first, and then they change it to 3 days of which it takes two days to post. Only then, will they credit it to your acct. In which time they would have already assessed a late fee because they won't credit your acct. In the same day you make your payment, you call them and argue with them and get nowhere. So now you figure out how your next payment will be paid so that won't happen again. Next time you pay it you're thinking "everything’s good". Next statement, you find they've charged you another late fee. You call & argue then finally they tell you “oh it’s because you made the payment after 3:00pm". What! Are you f*@*ing kidding me! They are stealing money from us because I was told 3 days ago, with another phone call that when you pay the min. payment and don't pay their late fee that they assess, for whichever new reason they've figured, because maybe you’re going to send the assessed late fee next week when you get paid, they won't accept that. They charge you another late fee on the first late fee. They don't separate the payment from the fee and when you charge parts that you need for repairs and upkeep on the equipment because you've paid enough on your " revolving" acct. to get what you "need" they up you minimum payment amount. So yes I feel that they are ripping off the consumer, you and me and everyone else that has or had dealings with JD and JD Finance Company.
A revolving account is just that your given a certain dollar amount to spend on their products...you make you're payments, and yes late fees "if they are justifiable", which brings you're account up and pays down the amount of the remaining balance you owe so you'll have that money to use in the future, if need be, for parts and repairs. Your payment amount never goes up with each use. Lowe’s, and when service merchandise was around, we had their revolving account card too. That’s the way theirs was and never did we have any problems with them or their cards or payments going up with use.
So yes, I do believe that JD and JD Finance Company should have a class action law suit brought against them for unfair business practices and ripping off good, hardworking consumers that deal with them. With all that I’ve read here today, I don't understand why something hasn't been done about JD and JD Finance already. What’s taking consumer affairs and the BBB so long to do something about them? What gives, guys?

Some of the other problems are as follows: PTO wiring shorted, the fuel line not attached and hanging under the mower, the engine smokes heavily on start-up (again 150 hours), the seat cracked, hood rattles and now the PTO clutch has burned up. After reading these posts, I’m going to go and look at the front axle for cracks before I hurt myself or someone else.
If I wanted a $1000 mower, I would have bought one. That’s all this thing is worth, not $3000. I feel like a real idiot when the neighbor is out mowing with a 10-year old Craftsman mower, and I’m in the garage working on my John Deere! Do not buy one. The only thing worse than the quality is their customer service! Dislike button, please!

I have a John Deere LA175 Mower. Wow in the "out-of-warranty" service expense column I have over $1300.00 in this thing. I did the research, checked the reviews but sadly, this mower is a lemon. I have placed a call into John Deere Customer Complaint Department and they are working to see what they can do. My hopes are not high.
This is not a John Deere mower. I had an L150; no worries, lots of hours, worked great. I had a Z445, awesome machine that got stolen right out of my yard. Then sadly enough, I had no money to afford another Ztrak. I had to get the LA175. I hope John Deere reads this and tries to help. My guess is that I will have to take it right up the ** and deal with this horrible machine.
Sad. They could help, I'm waiting on the callback now.

Hood components were of a substandard design. The use of plastic on the hinged front bumper was not sufficiently engineered to withstand use. Hood failed at front hinges. Further damage resulted which caused the upper hood to crack due to vibration. John Deere charges over $400.00 for replacement parts. Due to the number of mowers on the market with similar problems, this would be a candidate for a product recall or even a class-action lawsuit.

On the third day after delivery of a new L130, the engine would just stop while mowing but restart was instant. I should have recognized that there was an underlying problem. Now with 300 hours, engine is surging and I took it to James River Equipment. I was charged $161.00 to be told that it couldn't be repaired without a new carb ($200.00 out of their parts dept). Now estimate is up to $500.00 + for a dirty carb. I brought it home without repairs. This machine has given me problems of all sorts from the beginning. An independent will probably be able to take the carb apart and clean. I have replaced numerous parts since the new one. Sorry guys, no more. This is junk. The problems are constant and no end in sight. I am now told I need a deck rebuild for an additional and outrageous sum. The shop put 3 deep scratches in the hood. I will probably be reminded that my $3000.00 didn't buy a BMW but I was, for a short time, very proud of my Deere. The love affair didn't last long. Fortunately, I have a Cub Cadet that was actually built in March of l962. This piece of equipment has never been in the shop. A class action suit would be appropriate.

I bought a Deere LA145 mower in 2009 and have had trouble with it since day one. It is the most poorly designed riding mower I have ever owned in all my 71 + years. I have replaced the mower spindles and numerous blades (it wears out blades 3 to 1 compared to my Toro of the same size). The wheel spindles have been replaced and the grease fittings are facing the inside of the machine! I have removed the old spindles to put in the new ones and now, I have the grease fittings facing out; however, it is a task to get to them.
I grease the machine every time I use it but it still wears out. The deck has a hole worn in it to the rear of the chute. The dealer told me that this was due to sand being shot out of the chute but the clippings come out of the front of the chute, not the rear! Further, the deck is made in such a way that the grass clippings accumulate in the low areas and further creates heat and makes it difficult to clean and get at maintenance items. Today, using the machine the cutters refused to engage and I had to use the Toro to mow!
A fair warning to prospective buyers, John Deere mowers are junk. Do not buy one!

Just for tracking purposes, here is another John Deere lawn tractor with a bad transmission after only 160 hours. It's a $125 that I purchased a few years ago. After this happened, I started doing a little internet research and discovered that this is a very common problem. What are your options? First, pay the John Deere guy $700 to replace it with a transmission that will, in all likelihood, god bad again in a few years. Second, pay $1500 (just shy of the cost of the tractor) for an upgraded transmission (from a k36 to a k66) that you have to do yourself. Next, pay $1800 for a new tractor that will, undoubtedly, have the same issue. Either way, we're screwed. I bought John Deere because I thought it was quality equipment. I will not buy another one. Look at the internet. There are literally scores of similar stories out there just like mine. John Deere should make this right. This has to be a class action suit waiting to happen.

I purchased a John Deere L130 with the extended warranty. While under warranty, the steering gear wore out. Now it has failed again just two weeks after the extended warranty expired. After research, I have found and verified by the local dealer in Matthews, North Carolina that this is a design flaw and was identified over a year ago. However, I never received any correspondence from John Deere that I had a mower with a design flaw. My mower was at the Matthews location a couple of months ago. Again, it was not mentioned. At that time, I could have been updated with the correct design replacement part. This is very deceptive of John Deere. They at least should offer a discount on the repair, but this was refused also. I will follow up with the Better Business Bureau. And like so many other people having trouble with this mower, I think a class action lawsuit will eventually be crafted.

John Deere L130 Complaint - Long story short, John Deere sells poorly designed equipment now. John Deere has completely taken advantage of their brand name by building an inferior product (L series lawn mowers) and selling it to mass consumers (you and I). I bought an L130 48" Deck 23 HP Kohler in 2005. Currently, it has 250 hours. Here is a list of repairs since I've owned it:
2. Front Axel (3-4" Cast iron broke completely).
3. Both tie rods.
4. Two mower deck spindles (1 ripped right through the deck).
5. Steering column gears.
I bought another $1000 L130 from Craigslist to replace the deck since a new one would have cost me between $600-800. Now, the transmission is shot! I should have recognized the trend much earlier, however, I kept putting money into it thinking this would solve my John Deere's problem. It takes a long time to build brand recognition and a trusted reputation but just a fraction of that time to lose it all. I have told a large number of people about my experience with John Deere and I hope you do the same.

I was given a lawn mower, John Deere Model L130, by my brother whom had bought it new several years ago and serviced it regularly. After 9 hours of mowing (409 hours total) over a 4-week period, the front axle broke in half while I was riding on the mower. I fell forward and bruised my ribs on the steering wheel. If I was not a big guy, my ribs probably would have been broken. I had to have it fixed myself, thinking it was a freak occurrence. When I heard from the man who fixed it for me that the axle was in stock at the JD dealer, I started smelling a rat. Axles are not things that lawn mower dealers keep in stock. Some rudimentary investigation on the internet tells me that John Deere knows they have a design problem here. There were way too many people having axle and front steering problems. I was able to fix the problem for $140, but the bruised ribs are just getting better now after a week. I asked JD for assistance with the repair bill but was given the runaround, being told that the mower was too old, etc. Axles just don't break from normal use. John Deere needs to make this right.

In December 2009, we decided to take advantage of the tax bonus depreciation and buy a new piece of equipment. Carl ** from Standard (now Jesco) located in Middletown, DE came out to our job site to see the type of work we were doing and what John Deere machine would work for us best. After watching our men at work (we have pictures of Carl on our job site), he recommended the John Deere 332 Skid Steer Loader with rubber tires. We purchased this machine for $36,000 (also $18,000 for the milling head and $6,000 for the broom). The machine sat in our garage until our paving season started back up in March of 2010, the machine was overheating from the start.
We contacted Standard now Jesco and Carl ** (our salesperson was no longer with the company), so we dealt with Bob ** who came out, recognized the overheating problem and explained that this was not the machine for us. Bob ** encouraged us to give Jesco $16,000 more to upgrade to the John Deere 333D Trak Loader. On 10/6/10, we did purchase the machine recommended by Bob ** and this machine overheated from the beginning as well! Since October 2010, we have made numerous attempts to resolve this situation, with no success. We finally got Jesco to agree to a meeting in our office on Thursday, July 21st with a Duayne **, Randy & Noah (a new salesman for Jesco that had nothing to do with either piece of equipment).
We were very disappointed that Bob ** was not part of the meeting. We never heard from either of the 3 men in that meeting, so I called their supervisor, Jonathan ** at **. All Jon wanted was to have permission to go on our job site to see the Caterpillar machine we were renting, because their machine does not work. I guess he wanted proof that we forced to rent a machine, while we make our payments on time every month to John Deere for a machine that does not work! You can imagine the financial impact this has had on our company. Loss of revenue when we attempted to use the John Deere and repeatedly broke down on jobs, having to rent a machine until this John Deere/Jesco issue is resolved, etc.
We asked the three men in the meeting to please take their machine back and release us from our financial obligation so we could buy a machine that worked from another company and no one has responded. They just ignored and when we finally do got someone to answer, they asked why we've waited so long. I have a paper trail of emails from the first machine purchased and repair bills for Jesco that proved that we have been in constant contact with Jesco and John Deere. We really need to know how we should handle this situation. The machine we purchased in 2010 has a two-year warranty. Please help!
I have also dealt with Duayne **, GM of Product Support for Jesco at **. I wrote him an email on Monday asking him to answer me in regards to our meeting on 7/21 and never heard from him. In my email, I explained that if I did not hear from him by end of business on Monday, I had no choice, but to contact Consumer Affairs. We never heard from him. I called his Manager, Jon ** at **, he was belligerent and asked to go on our job site to see the Caterpillar we had rented. We were told by our men that he followed them around for 2 hours videoing our crew in the Caterpillar. We never heard back from Jon. I finally got a live body at John Deere in Wisconsin and she (Marcia) said that someone would be in touch with me yesterday (Tuesday). We heard nothing. Marcia's number is **.
We have done everything asked of us by Jesco as far as giving them $16,000 more dollars to upgrade our machine, brought it in every time it was asked of us at our expense and we continue to make our payments on time. This is not fair and we just want them to take their machine back, give us our money back so we can end our relationship with Jesco/John Deere and move on. We still have a few more months of good paving weather and we would like to get out this renting situation.

I purchased an LA135 Lawn Tractor in April of 2010 from Lowe’s. I was mowing a couple of weeks ago and the mower started chugging like it was running out of gas. I got off the mower and walked back up to the house. After a few minutes, I turned around and looked down where I parked the mower and there was a major fire going. I called the Fire Department and luckily they responded in minutes.
I went to Lowe’s and explained what happened, and they contacted Brookside Equipment, which is their dealer. Brookside requested I bring the mower to them. It's close to 45 miles from my house, but I loaded up the burnt remains and took it to them. They took pictures and send the information to Walt (area manager for John Deere). His only response was to report it to homeowner’s insurance. The only problem is that my homeowner’s insurance cost as much as buying a new mower.
I have contacted John Deere Corporate and no one seems very helpful. Lowe’s is the only one that has stepped up to the plate and offered a 30% discount on a new one. This was kind of them to do but I am in real estate sales and the market has practically come to a halt. I don't have the money right now to buy another one and the grass hasn't been mowed now in over a month. I am in a bind. The manufacturer’s warranty is for 2 years. It was the mower that caught fire, and this should be covered under the manufacturer’s warranty in my opinion. Please help me with this.

Growing up in the south, I've always heard how great John Deere products were and the reliability of those products. Just to let you know, I'm currently on my second attempt in finding that quality and reliability in the L Series Mowers. My first attempt was an L-100 Series mower, which failed after one summer’s use and their local service center couldn't figure out how to fix an oil leak on the motor. After 4-5 attempts of failed repairs by their local service center (James River Equipment), Home Depot actually refunded my money back.
Thinking that maybe I had gotten a "lemon", I used that money to purchase another John Deere product, because of the great quality of a John Deere. I bought an L-120 from the same Home Depot. Well, that hasn't proven to be such a great idea either.
All the replacement parts wear out quickly. I've got maybe 250 hours on my machine (John Deere L-125 W/48" cut, which is the wanna be John Deere) and so far I’ve replaced three steering gears (plate and gear), 6 blade spindles (the piece that holds the blades), 4 PTO switches, and much more smaller items.
If you want to take my word and experience into consideration, before you buy an L-Series John Deere mower – don't! Run the other way as quick as you can! Unless of course you have lots of time and money to buy and replace parts that wear out not long after you replace them. Buy a real Deere or buy a cheap model mower, it will outlast the L-Series John Deere.

I asked of the durability of the engine, (JOHN Deere turbo tuff) transmission,o and and if it was sufficient to mow 1 to two acres weekly for years and what maintence would be expected.
His reply was the complete unit (mower had a 2500 hour usage span before any non maintence repairs would be needed), turbo tuff transmission was rated at 200 ft-lbs and would last longer than the 22 hp v twin intwek engine rated at 2500 hours of usage along with a full 2 year warrenty.
new mower --? low battery when they delivered it? 31 days and 10 hours on the hour meter and numertous calls just to be told I had to pay to have the 10 hour of usage mower drug to their shop. Excuse me-- if it were a new car and 10 hours it would be about 500 miles of usage. When deciding to pay another dealer to come out and service the unit at my house to my surprise there was a manufacturers note to the dealers that the commpression release were mis set from the factory and would be needing ammediate adjustment. (yes good ol ERBIE AND JOHN JUNK)
I continued calling them that there was never a time the mower would go 3.5 mil never the advertised 5.8 mph and continues to move slower and slower further into each mowing. By the end of every mowing the unit would only go half speed of when I started mowing the 1 to 2 acres.
Berlts, pulleys, adjustment bars ...... NO SIR !!!!! look at the internet. John Junk had turbo tuff unserviceable transmissions with a non servacble filter made hust for John Deere. YES what I bought at the ERB TURF Equipment as a 2500 hour life span has a $700.00 to $900.00 plus labor turbo tuff transaxle just as models120 and 130 and have a recent history by not only the public, on the internet but also by honest dealers of a 350 to 370 hour life span.
The steering axles have bushings contrary to bearings as the salesman represented me AND THE DECK has been welded twice. The 2 blade spindles are sealed greaseless which both had to be replaced which was around $100.00 for the 2 spindles.
By the way if you call most of the John deere dealers (excluding Nobbe) even if you did buy the lawn mowert from them, they will try to milk you for more and tell you that they can not trouble shoot over the phone and they will scvhedule a pick up for their transportation charge and also a minimum srrvice fee. 10 to one they will not tell you the transmissions are not servicable and look at it just as you would. lets see the belt is not in pieces, has tension on it, the fan is alright (need it or not) how about letting us stick it you a little mower.
By the john deere even misrepresented the briggs engines which brought about a class action lawsuit. wow The ?$75.00 and more check for the underpowered boat anchor engine ended bing 15 or 20 dollars.

I took it in for an oil change. I was told it was low on oil. It ran 20 more hours and after 98 hours and seizing up, I was told it ran out of oil and I needed a new engine. I purchased a "used" $1,200 engine from Plains Power Equipment in Seward, NE. After 113 hours and it not being able to start, I was told it needed a new starter ($198). I picked the mower up and took it to a private small engine repair shop. He replaced the starter and it still does not run. This gentleman does a lot of business with Plains Power and expressed his dissatisfaction with how they handled my situation.
My mower is still in the shop. I probably will end up purchasing a new Briggs engine for a third, the price of a "new" Kawasaki" engine. After talking to a few mechanics, I feel I had an engine that was not running correctly from the factory. I was told the motor should not have run if it was out of oil since there is an oil shut off sensor that prevents engines from seizing. You have to understand that I am a hardworking, single mom that thought purchasing a JD would be the end of mower issues. It has been nothing but a complete money pit. Not to mention having to borrow a mower to mow my yard for the month that it has not been running. It is my understanding that John Deere motors no longer come with Kawasaki engines. Is this because of a problem?
Glenn from Plains Power told me he talked with John Deere and they could not warranty the product since John Deere had no records of service. In my opinion, John Deere has let me down, taking advantage of a consumer who had only wanted the "best". I am very disappointed in John Deere.

This tractor is out of warranty and is still like new, but it is in the shop with trans problems. If you are considering buying a John Deere, try to rethink it.
I saw on this website that there are more than 34 pages of complaints on their products, that says it all to me. I wish I had seen this website before I bought my tractor. I would not have bought a John Deere, if I had. I will have to pay the bill to get my tractor back from the money barrens, but I will either trade or try to sell it as soon as possible. I cannot keep paying out the raging price of having it work on. With only 325 hours on it, it has cost me several thousand dollars to use it for that amount of time. First year we had it, I was mowing a small incline and the wheel fell off.
Second year, the gas tank sweated gasoline. That's right, gasoline was leaking out of the tank in beads
Fourth year (and this is the clincher). The manifold melted because grass collected somewhere on the engine which heated it up to the point that it quit working. Imagine that, grass gets on a Lawnmower (and a commercial grade mower at that). This would be like saying don't hit bugs driving down the freeway because it will heat up your engine and blow. Isn't this the most ridiculous thing you ever heard?
Finally, this year we just had it serviced and it cost $475 which is outlandish for a mower. The second time I go out to mow this year, the belt falls off. Now they want $300 to fix this.
We use this mower once a week for about three hours. We only use it five months out of the year and it is kept in a garage when not in use.
I bought this John Deere because, at one time, I believed in American products. Not anymore. These products are far inferior to their Japanese counterparts...and that John Deere executive is why consumers are switching. I know that I will never buy another John Deere product nor will I deal with JD Equipment in London Ohio.
I live in a development where each homeowner has two or more acres to mow. One neighbor has a Kubota, the other a Snapper, and one with a Grasshopper. I have spoken to them about their mowers. None of them have had any problems (and two of them do not take it in for any service). I hope this story will help you make an informed decision on your next purchase of a lawn mower.

I purchased a John Deere JS25 self-propelled lawn mower on July 6, 2009 from Lowe's Home Store on 75th & Dodge St. in Omaha, NE. I also purchased a Lowe's 4 year Service Advantage extended warranty. The mower was the floor model and already had oil in it.
This mower used an excessive amount of oil from the beginning. When the level reached "add oil", I noticed it became very hard to start. I decided to wait until the spring to take it in to Lowe's for maintenance.
On March 19, 2010, the mower was dropped off at Lowe's for maintenance. I instructed the store personnel to note "when it starts after 30+ pulls, the engine runs very fast and leaks/loses oil. The mower was picked up on March 29, 2010, with Lowe's stating that the problem was caused by dirty oil. They charged me $61.00 to change the oil.
The summer of 2010 presented the same issues about the mower using excessive amounts of oil. I had the same problem with starting it and having it run properly. Again, I waited until spring to get it serviced.
On May 14, 2011, the oil was changed and an attempt was made to mow my lawn. I mowed a 100' x 25' area and then the mower quit running and wouldn't start again. Oil went from full to add oil mark. I took the mower to Lowe's. I received a call from Bennington Equipment on May 19, 2011, stating that the exhaust valve got pushed out of the engine and the engine walls were scored and the mower needed a new engine. John Deere denied warranty coverage because they said the mower was run without oil. I know this mower always had sufficient oil in it because I personally mow the lawn at my home and I always check the oil.
On May 19, 2011, I went to Lowe's and talked to the manager on duty. Her name was Maria. She took all my information and said she would get back to me. She called a department employee and they verified the oil could sit in the mower until spring as long as the mower wasn't run with the previous year's oil in it. I received a call the next day from an employee whose name started with A-Anita, Amelia, etc. She stated that I needed to call the Lowe's Service Advantage number, 1-877-775-6937, to re-register the lawn mower and they would re-evaluate it and make a decision to repair it or give me a new lawn mower. I called this number again and they told me since John Deere denied coverage that Lowe's wouldn't cover it either.
I called Lowe's back and spoke to the manager on duty, Charles. He told me that it was not covered because the engine was run without oil. I explained to him about the problems and oil usage from the beginning. I asked him why they didn't find this problem when the maintenance was completed in March 2010. He told me these lawn mowers need oil added every 5 hours they run. This is a John Deere specification. I read the book from beginning to end and it did not state that. It only said that after the first 5 hours the oil needed to be changed and that was done. He also informed me that the oil needed to be changed 2 times per year.
They want $247.00 to fix this mower. I told them just give the mower back. I am retired and live on a fixed income. I cannot afford to keep putting money into this mower. I purchased a John Deere because they are supposed to be the best! What a joke! I will never buy a John Deere product nor will I ever step inside or buy anything from Lowe's again. Be assured, I am contacting the Better Business Bureau to register my complaint. I don't want anyone else to be duped by Lowe's and John Deere.

My JD L120 has less than 300 hours on it and has been serviced regularly. Every time I mow, it throws off the drive belt. I first thought it was the PTO, so I quit going in reverse at all. Now, it only goes in reverse. Also, I thought the drive belt needed to be replaced; but no, it's leaking trans fluid.
James River Equipment (formerly Smitherman's) where I purchased the mower originally informed me today the trans is a "sealed, non-reparable" part costing $750 for a new trans only, not including labor, etc. I can't see putting that much into this mower. To add, I read a forum about upgrade trans kits, but again, they are cost-prohibitive for me on this machine.

Enough about my family history. In May of 2010, I purchased a new X540 Garden Tractor. I ordered it with chrome hubcaps. I wanted it to be the nicest looking one around. I have the la 145 riding mower with 114 hrs on it. I use it to mow and plow the driveway in winter. I noticed loss of power when climbing hills and thought the tranny was bad. The belt was cracking and I purchased new belt from dealer. While removing old belt, I noticed it was using left side brake linkages as a type of idler. At first I thought, surely this is not the design; it must be just tangled up during assembly. So I cut out the old belt, installed the new one up the middle of frame rails as you would think. The tractor ran okay but still power is lost on steep hills. I was ready to concede to buying a new tranny. I decided to route belt like it was. A huge pain in the ****. I had to drop pedals, remove battery, etc. but sure enough, it must be done this way. It climbs like a mountain goat. That's the problem. Now after 160 hours on a well-serviced garaged mower, the transmission is gone. I contacted JD via email, then by phone. Both responses were: "Sorry, you are not happy," and "We sell a great product." They also said my transmission is isolated. I informed them that on several complaint sites, there were possibly 1000 having the same issues as I have. The person on the phone said, "No way." I gave him a few of the sites as well.
Anyway, if anyone has started anything against JD for selling a crappy product, let me know. I contacted 4 JD repair/sales centers. Three of the guys own a Cub Cadet; the other, a New Holland. All had owned older JD mowers and said all the L series and the new D series mowers are junk. I should buy a Cub Cadet or a Walmart brand. Either will outlast the JD L and D series. My estimate for repair was $800.00. So I am going to be selling the 22 HP motor and parting it out. I ordered a new Cub Cadet 54" Garden Tractor today. JD can kiss my butt..

But it still got the same problem, also after a short while when the warranty holes started to come in the deck. My yard is a regular yard with no thick grass. This kept on until after the warranty ran out. To make it short, John Deere refused to make mower deck right. The rep said there was no paperwork on where it was worked on during warranty. He did not look that hard because I kept the copies of the work that was done. I did have to carry the mower to another dealer. It's because from where I brought the mower, the part manager and I had words. And the store manager thought it would be best if I took it to another dealer. So, I took it to Colquitt JD dealer. I brought it in Donalsonville, GA JD dealer. After the rep told Colquitt dealer that I make copies of the work order and give it to them at Colquitt JD, nothing came out of it.

Now they are saying that we should have checked the oil every time we ran the mower! Who does this? And we were certainly not told this when we purchased the mower. They also found the brackets holding the mower deck were severely cracked and ready to break. I also found that the mower belts would routinely come off the pulleys and could not be fixed. Amongst other problems, the mower deck literally rusted off and peel on the garage floor when we got it out to mow the second year! Huge chunks of paint are bubbled up-on the top and bottom of the deck. John Deere wouldn’t replace the deck under warranty! They only said it was an "environmental issue", but wouldn’t explain what was meant by that term.
Finally, when I escalated to their legal department, I was told that a "foreign object struck the mower deck, caused rusting, and rust eventually moved under the paint, which is why you see the paint bubbling. We do not deem this cause of rusting a manufacturing defect. I don’t know how John Deere thinks that explains the entire deck rusting and falling off the mower on the second year. Clearly, the primer wasn’t applied on this deck. We need it to be replaced. The local parts supplier says he has had so many issues with this deck that he keeps plenty in stock. The only thing worse about this model is the transmission problems. Sure wish we hadn’t bought two of them!

I contacted a local dealer through John Deere dealer finder. I spoke to a sales person about which vehicle and attachment to purchase to fit my needs. It was understood I’m a first time buyer. I picked up the $11000 vehicle with a $3000 blade to use for pack dirt removal and grading. I bought $250 ramps to put in the bed of the pickup truck. Here come the unforeseen problems; cracked utility vehicle fender and scratches from being in and out of pickup truck bed. Bent the pickup bed a little too, but fixed it. This was not a problem, but I asked Jim ** not to recommend buyers ever to put a utility vehicle into a pickup bed because of potential damages. I took responsibility for being a dummy in doing this and just asked them to not allow a new buyer to do that again.
Now, I drove 5 hours to destination to use the heavy duty packed dirt/grading blade. I took the utility vehicle off the truck with 1/4 inch clearance on each side (mind you, this is no easy feat because the front wheels of utility vehicle have to ride over the pickup truck beds wheel well and down a set of utility vehicle ramps that I just purchased from Turf and Industrial. Also, keep in mind there is no power brakes, no power steering and the utility vehicle lurches when engaging forward or reverse movement no matter how hard you try to take it easy). So I got the vehicle to the ground, drove it to trail site and within the first 15-minute a hydraulic line gave out, leaving fluid on the ground, and the blade quickly fell loose to the ground. I had to remove the blade to the bed of the utility vehicle to return home 5 hours away, which I know is not John Deere’s problem.
Anyway, I called Turf and Industrial and Jim was on vacation, but I spoke with Dennis, the manager, about problem with the blade and would like to return it, that it had broke down, and that while the blade was very well-made, the hydraulics and the mechanical workings coupled with the lack of adequate weight such as a heavy tractor would have to push the blade into packed dirt. It has been recommended the blade is not applicable for my intended/requested purposes of making this purchase. So I waited. I called to find Jim had returned about 2 weeks later and asked Jim to please return this blade. He said he would check into it. No response back so I called and Jim said no and that I may call the person who would make a decision about the blade.
I called Darin ** and he returned call a few days later. He said he understood the inadequacies of the blade for my purposes and would call back the following day. It’s been going on two weeks now and I have left messages for Jim and Darin, but no response. I have since purchased a trailer to remedy the hauling problem, but the blade and ramps need to be returned to show good faith and to stand behind the equipment John Deere and Santa Clara Turf and Industrial recommends and sells. Any assistance in this matter would be appreciated.

I bought a brand new LA140 JD lawn tractor from you 3 years ago. Last fall, I noticed the performance was having a problem. I could not run longer than 15-30 minutes before the belt would stretch and it would basically stop. I used this for lawn care, cleaning the snow off my drive, etc. Nothing I did or used was not without equipment built and sold for smaller lawn tractors.
This spring I bought from you a replacement drive belt. Same result. So I took it into your service department on 6/3/10. I explicitly wrote on the sheet what the tractor was doing. And that after 15 minutes it would stop. Chuck was the one I worked with. On 6/18, I picked it up. After I was called a few days before telling me it was all fixed. The Idler pulley were replaced along with a couple of other small issues they found. Invoice #**. I picked it up and brought it home. 15 minutes later, it did the same thing. I called them and took it back. I was very disappointed that they did this work, taking 2 weeks (which I understood), and that they never spent 15 minutes to check it out? I drove it around your parking lot for 15 minutes to show them exactly what it was doing. A service dept. tech came out and he had me hook it up to a pole and excel.
There was little pull by the tractor. He looked under it and said it had too large of belt on it, even tho it was factory spec. he said it "happens". I left it with you to replace. Two hours later, I get a call saying the transmission was shot. I picked it up the next day (Saturday) and Chuck/Service manager said he felt bad because they did a "poor job on this" and credited part of my service and refunded $130. Then he stopped me on the way out and asked me if I would be interested in having them replace my transmission with one that was used. There was an LA120 there that the person bought another tractor because the engine is bad. He told me he already had a letter to the owner for 5 weeks, that in another week he would send out another letter and after 6 weeks it was considered "abandoned" and they could use the parts.
It's been 7 weeks, so I called today and spoke with Chuck. He said no other letter had been sent but this was going to take 6 more months? Speaking with others that own rental property and work with abandoned property this is just bogus. So I basically bought brand new equipment from you that breaks down in 150 hours, that you don't know how to repair and lie to me. I wanted to let you know because I have already contacted John Deere and am about to go out to the websites and blast you on this.

I have a 2006 John Deere X300 with 95 hours on it. Recently while mowing, I heard a snap and the tractor stopped moving. I have been informed that it needs a new hydro unit which costs $1,100. I bought this when I retired because my old JD, although a good little tractor, had a deck that was very hard to attach. Up until last week, I was happy with this unit. Now, I think I would have been better off with a cheaper, disposable tractor. My brother recently had to buy a new deck for his 3-year old, 100 series JD. Deere's quality has gone.

I purchased a mower three or four years back from Home Depot and I work on it more than I cut grass with it. I have to pull the push rods and straighten them back almost every time. I need to mow and JD will just give you a line of **. They will not fix the problem or make it good. They wasted my time and I had to pay someone to cut my grass every time. I don't have time to pull the parts off to get it running again.

When I bought a John Deere, I thought I was purchasing the most well known name representing quality. That is the farthest from the truth. I think JD has a great Marketing department, but they make junk. My LA145 only has 46 hours, and the majority of those are from having to mow my lawn twice! It leaves a trail of uncut grass when I mow, and I have to go over it again. It takes twice as long. I thought it was the blades so I put new ones on, but that didn't change the results one bit.
I will never buy another John Deere, and everyone I know will hear about my experience. I have put it in the shop many times already for various other reasons, but I can't afford to let my yard go for another 6 weeks! That is usually how long it takes for them to fit me in. It's amazing what a $2,600 riding mower can't do that a $300 Toro Push Mower can. The Toro has a nice, clean cut, the first, and only pass every time! Goodbye John Deere and goodbye Lowes for not taking back a defective product!
I don't need to be contacted by an attorney. I just want others who search and find this site to know about my experience. I don't have the time, money, or patience to deal with John Deere. They have already wasted too much of my valuable time.

I purchased a JD L120 about 5 years ago. It has 147 hours on it. The fly wheel (which is made of plastic) cracked in half and is worn down. You would think that something that has teeth should be made out of metal. I am not an engineer, but it looks like they designed it to fail. It costs $137.50 for a new one. I bought a JD because I thought I was buying quality. I was wrong. Also, why is there no way to change transmission fluid? I will never buy or recommend JD ever again. I have not been able to mow my lawn in weeks. I will have to hire my neighbor ($150) to cut everything down to a respectful height.

I bought a G100 in 2004 for $4200; it now has 315 hours on it and is useless. The local dealer said they would give me $200 for it, so much for Deere's holding their value. At about 300 hours it had trouble going uphill, and now it goes nowhere. The hydro is history, $800 to a $1000 to fix it. That comes out to about $700 a year to mow my lawn. The dealership says they never heard of a hydro going bad, did I just get lucky or what?

I bought a walk behind mower from Lowe's in may of 2009. By fall the mower wouldn't disengage the drive system to let you back away from a tree, fence or wall. In April, John Deere instructed me to take it to their service center Jernigan's. They told me on three different occasion it was fixed. Each time the mower went back to locking the rear wheels up and you couldn't pull the mower back away form the object. John Deere had them put a new gear box in so they said. It's back to doing the same thing now John Deere says that's the way it's designed.
You should push it forward two feet and the drive will release so you can pull it back. I said, "How do I do that when I'm up against something?" Their reply was find a different way of mowing. A trim mower should be made to go forward and reverse. Very unhappy with John Deere right now. Unable to use mower at my present address. If I had a place i didn't have trees, a privacy fence or flowers, it would be okay if you never had to stop.

As a former John Deere C & CE dealer who closed down shortly after the lawn tractors were placed in Home Depot I have a unique perspective on the quality of the products although the models I dealt with are a little dated. First off, by my JD sales representative's own admission, the L series is designed with a 5 year life expectancy.
2. The mower deck spindles are a tall design that puts additional stress on the bearings and the spindle pulley works loose and strips. There are no parts available so a new spindle is required.
3. The frame is two light weight rails with a pan for the engine to sit on. Therefore, don't expect a long life.
4. Due to the light weight design of the tractor and the attach points for the mower deck, the cut is not very even and the machine and rider are subject to vibration.
John Deere has several levels of service bulletins addressing problems. There are the regular service bulletins which are little more than a heads up to the dealer of problems. Then they have "fix as fail" service bulletins which mean just that, if it's a known issue, fix it under warranty. If it doesn't fail (with in a period of time), don't worry about it. They then have recalls if there is a major issue. John Deere used to stand for quality but now they build overpriced junk. If I were looking for a small lawn tractor, I would save some money and buy a Craftsman or an older, larger John Deere but then again, some models were better than others. (The opposed twin engines seem to be like to blow rods.)

I bought a John Deere Zero-Turn Mower (Z850A) in August of 2008 from SunSouth in Samson, Alabama. The first time I used it the belt came off and tore up. They put a new belt on it and again it came off and tore up. They came and picked up the mower and took it to the shop. They held on to the mower there for about 6 weeks. That’s right, around 6 weeks. They did bring me another mower to use (not the same model). I also made almost 2 payments on it till I finally got to use it. I came to find out that they were having a lot of problems on these models with 6’ cutting decks. They added some things to the deck that wasn't originally there. The deck has never cut right since they did all of the work to it.
I asked the salesman to see if John Deere would buy back this mower and I would buy a mower with a 5' deck since they say they don't have any problems with those mowers; so far no luck. The mower is still not cutting right and another belt tore up today. They have changed out every part on the deck and still no cigar. I think the biggest problem with this deck and mower is the horsepower is just not enough for this big deck, and I really think John Deere knows this, but won’t say. I wonder how many folks have had the same problem around the country. I have paid on this mower for almost 2 years now and all I have is a [bad] mower.

We bought a John Deere G100 and have put a little over 400 hours on it. Recently, it would not go more than 2 feet and stop. It also made a loud grinding noise. I was told by the local John Deere dealer that the transmission was shot and it would be $1800 to fix it! I paid a little over $4000 for this mower thinking it would last forever! I have now been told that this particular mower has transmission issues and John Deere is aware of it but does nothing about it. I bought a new mower, a Toro. I will never buy John Deere again!
