Transmission was replaced on the John Deere LA 135 lawn tractor after 290 hours. It would not go up hill.

Bought a Deere L125 Lawn tractor, the engine seized and I had a friend's engine from his LA145 put into it. All's well until now. My tractor won't go up hills of any size. I had to pay my friend $600 for the engine from his and another $400 to the dealer to put it in. Now, unless the ground is level, I can't go anywhere.

At only 200 hours operation, the fuel tank on my X475 developed a crack and started spraying fuel under the tractor. This crack in the fuel tank is obviously a very dangerous condition. Since JD no longer had the exact replacement tank (I wonder why?), I had to pay an additional cost for a new fuel sender + harness + labor. So bottom line, I had to fund their design mistake. The total was $670.00! I've logged a complaint with JD. We'll see what they will do for me. I also intend to file an official complaint with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. JD should own up if they have an issue. Every company can have an issue. It's what you do about it that matters. $670.00 in unexpected repairs, ruined lawn where it was spraying fuel over an area of about an acre.

We purchased a John Deere LA 135 the day the warranty ran out I was mowing didn’t like the cut or the chatter from the mower deck. I pulled the deck off thinking the blades were bad but they looked good and sharp. I removed the guards from around the mower deck blade pulleys. I found cracks around all the bolts that fastened the pulley to the deck. Could not get a satisfactory answer from the dealer so I repaired it. Low and behold the other side has the same problem.
Today one of the deck wheels fell off the weld on the plate and deck was bad. I called John Deere they request I get an estimate for repairs and they would see if they could help. Is anybody else having deck problems? I work hard for my money and feel like I blew a couple of month’s wages on a bad deal. I am frustrated could probably fix these problems myself but I spent the money so I would have a reliable mower. I guess I would be better off buying a Wal-Mart brand and replacing it every couple of years. I thought American made meant quality not rip u off.

I purchased a John Deere L120 from the previous owner of my home. I asked him how he mowed the 1+ acre yard which was very steep and he said the riding mower worked fine. I should have researched this site first. The mower ran up and around the yard 1 time and then refused to move.
I had it picked up and the local lawn and garden service told me the transmission was bad. They said it would take 3 days to get a new transmission at a cost of about $645 and installation of about $160. They said the book was about $1100 (it is a 2003) so I would be a little upside down on the price I paid. Fortunately, after 2 weeks they had not done anything and I got mad and said just return the mower and I will buy a new one. Then I came to this site and am so thankful for all the input regarding John Deere.
I was getting ready to go buy a new one at Lowe's. I am still going, but Deere will get no more of my money and I will write Lowe's and suggest they stop carrying them. Thanks for everyone's input and advice. O not buy a John Deere. John Deere knew of the problem with the failing transmissions and did nothing. I would gladly join in a class action. I lost about $1,000 on a piece of junk that I must now dispose of and I will never buy a John Deere in the future.

I bought a John Deere 100 series tractor 3 years ago at Lowes and have 150 hours on it. It has the 48 inch deck and I paid around $3000. It will no longer pull a hill after it warms up. I have found out this is a common problem with this series of tractor. I also was told from a John Deere dealer the tractor was not worth fixing. Upon talking to other mower repair places, they have 12-14 tractors in with the same problem this year. I also was told it is around an $800 repair to fix the transmission. I can't believe John Deere can't and won't stand behind their problem. The problem is I don't have money lying around just to buy a new tractor. So, John Deere saying it wrong is like a deer should say it runs like a deer that’s been shot.

Two years ago, I bought a used LT190 from a local dealer (non-Deere) who took this mower in on trade. I ran the serial number through our local John Deere dealer and found that there had never been any problems with it. It had 155 hours on the meter. I started noticing that after the mower was warmed up, it had difficulty going up inclines, however small. I now have 259 hours on it and the problem is getting worse. I've since learned that this is a common problem with the Tuff Torq K-46 transmission. Since Deere has put this same transmission in several models over the years, knowing full well by the number of consumer complaints that there is a problem, it seems reasonable that they should be held accountable for this. 259 hours is not a lot of time! I cannot afford a new mower or $1,000 to buy a new transmission. I was buying a Deere based on name and reputation.

I have always liked John Deere. I have had several big tractors over 80HP, they were great. In fact, I still have an 85 HP that has never failed me. So when I saw the L series lawn mower at Home Depot, I didn't hesitate to buy one. I did ask about service on it and the clerk pointed out the sticker of our local dealer on the mower. So I purchased a 2002 L120 with the 48-inch deck. The rest of that season, it did fine, was a little hard to start, but nothing to cry about. The second season was when things started happening. The deck spindles started failing. No grease fittings. When I talked with the dealer, I was told the replacement spindles had the fittings but that mine was not covered by any warranty since it was over a year.
Paint started coming off the deck in big spots. By the next season, I had to repaint the deck. I keep this mower inside. I have a 15-year old Sear rider that still has deck paint. The third season, the motor caught fire. I would have lost the whole mower had it not happen near a water hose. Fuel line is located too close to the head. Even with the grease fitting, the spindles fail. I doubled the bearings in them and that fixed that. Other brands already do that. The John Deere brand blades last about half as long as the aftermarket brands. Now for the biggie! At 202 hours, the transmission started slipping. I will run until it gets hot then stops. The dealer tells me it can't be repaired. A new one will cost nearly half the cost of a new mower. But the kicker was, he told me it will fail around 200 hours also.
A Google search tells me 100s, if not more owners of this mower, are in the same boat. This is not what I had come to expect from JD. They knew this was a problem, every dealer I checked with has a stock bin full of these transmission so they know there is a problem. Why isn't there a recall on them? End result is John Deere has lost a faithful customer! Do not buy John Deere mowers.

I bought a new John Deere LA130 mower 3 years ago. I paid $2,300 for it. The transmission went out. I'm trying to get enough signatures about this issue to bring a lawsuit against this company. What happened to the phrase, “Nothing runs like a Deere?” My wife and I used our savings to buy this and now we have nothing. How can Americans be treated like this, thinking we're spending our hard earned money for something that's suppose to be the best in the world and ending up with nothing.

I've been reading a lot about buying from a John Deere dealership, instead of discount stores. I have a 6 year old L120 with 318 hours that I bought from a local JD dealership a year after my father in law bought the same model from Lowe's. Which he has over 400 hours on? Both of us are mechanics and have taken excellent care of them. However I have had numerous problems with mine, and he hasn't had any problems thus far. So much for that theory. It started when the electrical plug on the PTO started breaking. Little did I know that the bracket holding the clutch from spinning had worn out, (faulty) and that in turn allowed too much play in the PTO, which eventually took out the clutch, and put excess pressure on the main bearing, which in turn caused the main seal to leak oil. I will probably purchase another mower verses repairing this one, due to the cost. However it will not be a JD!

I purchased a l165 lawnmower from this dealer. It had 8 hours on the clock. I asked why it was returned to the dealer and the salesman said it was too small for the man yard - red flag. I asked, "what type mower did he buy?". He didn't, he got a refund. I have owned this mower for almost two years and I have got to use it about three are four times. It will not crank. You run the battery down trying to crank it. After several trips to the dealer and several calls to John Deere, I'm stuck with a mower that mostly in the way it has fourteen hours on it now and I cut my grass with a Murray mower. I waited along time to get a John Deere. Now I wish I bought something else.

My dad owns a John Deere 757 Zero Turn Mower. He has changed the oil every season and keeps it clean. While cutting a small yard (about an acre), I did not have any problems. When I loaded it on the trailer and drove about 30 minutes down the road to cut my parent's house, it sounded different on start up. I tried to turn on the blades and it did not have any power. I shut down the engine and noticed the left side was not getting any gas.
After all other methods of finding out what was wrong, I had failed. I took the valve cover off. Both push rods on the left side were bent. We sent it to an engine shop, where they just advised us that it overheated due to grass buildup that you could not see under the heat shields. They said the engine is trashed and a new one is $3,500 + labor. He said that this is the 6th engine he has seen like this and it is because of the design of the shields with trapping grass inside of them.
This is the second bad experience with John Deere. The first was my parents gator. They had the older style model and the frame rusted in half. When they took it to the dealer, they said this is a common problem with the way they were built allowing dirt and moisture to get inside and there is no way to access it to clean it out. I'm not sure who was in charge of either design, but if we were told it was a common problem, I don't see why there was not a recall, especially for the engine overheating. $3,500 so far, plus all the downtime from not cutting grass. I have to borrow the in-laws' mower who lives 40 miles away.

John Deere L120 engine would run for about 1/2 hour then quit. I changed filter several times, kept doing same thing. Noticed when I changed the filter, I heard a gurgling sound in the gas tank. We re-drilled the small breathing hole in gas cap. It had fumed over and plugged the small hole. It runs fine now. Now, the mower deck belts keep jumping off.

What is sad is that I just junked my John Deere 110 from 1970. I used if for 12 seasons and only broke one belt and re-did the deck bearings. The transaxle seals were shot and the old Kohler 181 series engine needed $500 in parts and machine work. After reading up on newer tractors, I see that the entry level 1970 quality tractor cannot be purchased at any price. I'm looking for a new old John Deere.

I bought a John Deere L118 riding mower from a JD dealer who is no longer in business. After 4 seasons and about 100 hours the transaxle is bad. I have a rolling lot of about 1/3 acre which I was told by the dealer was no problem and even sold me a blade for pushing snow off of the driveway (I used it 2 times). I have read many complaints of these mowers with the K46 transaxle failing and being undersized for the mower. When I called the dealer I was told they could replace the transaxle with the same type for $800-$1000. This is half the price of the mower and the dealer told me that this repair actually totals out the mower and to buy a G300 which is a much heavier model and is about $5000. I feel that the transaxle should be replaced because they are undersized, evident by the numbers of complaints. I bought a John Deere because they are supposed to be awesome and even bought at a dealer to avoid "box store" lower quality merchandise.
Is there anything I can do or anyone I can contact? There is an individual that sells upgrade kits for they mowers which includes a heavier transaxle (K66) and parts needed to retrofit it. It is approx. $1700, which is more than the mower is worth but cheaper than the G300 model. This retrofit kit apparently turns this mower into what it was expected to be (by all who bought it). This mower never mulched or cut as well as it should have but I loved the hydrostatic transmission, which turns out to be the heart of the problem with these units (L100, L110, L118, L120, L130, etc.). A mower that cost me $2000 that after 4 seasons in St. Louis is a huge paperweight. I am physically unable to mow the yard by hand and now have to look for a cheap second-hand mower to do what the John Deere should be doing.

I purchased an L120 riding mower in 2003. What a piece of junk! Lets start with the electrical system, first the dealer replaced the PTO wiring, then the reverse safety switch. When that didn't work, they then replaced the entire wiring harness! Ever since then, the tractor will not recharge the battery. Then the deck. I have replaced every spindle because the original spindles froze up. Then the deck broke and had to be welded. Also the springs which engage the blades has been replaced three times. Now for the steering! Each spindle bearing has worn out and needs replacing.
And now the biggest thing is the Cast Iron front axle has broken in half! Next to the grease fitting. I have contacted John Deere Corporate and was also treated with disrespect. I have 1.5 acres of total flat grass which this mower should handle with no prob. Now I can't use my mower at all because I have a broken cross member. The slogan for deer is no one screws you like John Deere! I have a race car and am very mechanical so maintenance is not an issue for me. I guarantee John Deere will have some excuse for this like every occurrence. I'm very ready to do a class action lawsuit. I've already vented at the dealer which does nothing but make me feel good for the minute. It's time for everyone to stand up against this green junk! I have spent countless money on fixing a tractor which should last me 15 to 20 years! The physical damage is the stress which I have over this piece of crap.

Custer County ImpI purchased a z445 zero turn riding lawn mower as a mulching mower from John Deere expecting it to be the best because of name and price but am I disappointed. The local dealer has picked up my mower so many times, I gave them a key to my garage, trying to fix the problem. I purchased this mower strictly for its mulching capabilities and brand recognition, hoping to have the best. Wrong! I have to mow every other day with a height of no less than 3" and go over the yard at least twice. The dealer that sold the tractor to me has increased the rpm to above record standards which will probably reduce the life of the engine. I am so disappointed and helpless because I do not believe the local dealer is at fault but I don't know what to do. I have not received what I paid for.

I bought a 100 Series LA115 in June of 2009. The tractor currently has 19 hours on it and the crank is burnt and the rod is broken. I filed a complaint with John Deere and they claim it was consumer neglect due to lack of lubrication (not true) and will not cover a new motor under the warranty. I purchased this tractor from Lowe’s and if I had read this forum before I purchased it, I never would have bought one. John Deere looks for any excuse not to cover their product under warranty. I paid $1600.00 for this tractor and it’s less then a year old and all I have now is a piece of **. They want me to pay $1000.00 to have a new engine put in. Not happening. I also had a craftsman mower for 16 years and did not have any issues with that. From now on I'll stick with Craftsman. My problem is the same as John's from Faribault, MN. I bought a new John Deere L120 mower and this is the beginning of the fourth season and the hydrostatic transmission is shot. I thought the name John Deere meant quality but, boy, was I wrong! The warranty is expired and the cost to repair is almost as much as the purchase price and not many people work on John Deere mowers. Very disappointed and angry! I own a John Deere X320 and pull a 850lbs lawn roller with ease and this tractor is built like a tank. I think the problem that people are having is due to using too small of a tractor or mower for the job they have to do. There will always be issues with any brand and that is what a warranty is for, so get the extended warranty when making a large purchase and the extended warranty is very inexpensive to buy. Also, you can't just abuse or mistreat a machine because it's a Deere and they need maintenance too. My X320 comes with a 4-year 300 hour warranty and I expect that it will live long past that even with the heavy work load that I ask of it. My advice to anyone buying a mower/tractor is do some research on what machine you will need for your specific yard/work before buying, not overworking a machine then complaining about it.

Both of my John Deere is dealer bought lawn tractors about $6,000 each. The transaxle on the one is a joke, I was told it that the tractor was designed for a person less than 200 lbs when I started to have problems, but nothing was said by the same dealer when I was looking and bought the tractor that there was a weight limit of the operator of 200 lbs. The hoods are like egg shells after a couple of years, one cracked when a cold can of soda was placed on the hood. The gasket for the gasoline tank cap doesn't hold up and you have to buy the $15 cap instead of the gasket. So the ones you buy at the dealers must be same low quality that Lowes and Home Depot sell. When I was at the dealer last week ordering a new hood they had the same model number on the sale floor as Discount stores. So JD must also stand for Junk from Dealer. The costs of the hoods are over couple hundred plus each.

This message is for anyone who is having trouble with the transmission on the John Deere mowers. The company that makes the transmissions (Tuff Torque) offered to add a drain plug to the k58 and below transmissions for $25 but John Deere refused. I find it odd that the more powerful John Deere mowers with stronger transmissions are offered with a drain plug and a schedule to change the oil from John Deere but they seal the weaker ones so you cannot change the trans fluid which gets dirtier and more used than the engine oil due to the mechanics of a hydro.
I just wanted to bring this to the attention of those out there that have had problems so you can consider why John Deere wouldn't want you to be able to service the transmission on these units and my guess is, so that they fail and you have to buy a new one out of warranty. I have heard a lot of people including a friend that if the trans goes out under warranty, John Deere will blame it on abuse or negligence, so buyer beware. Also, take note that the dealerships use the drain plug on the higher end or higher dollar units as a selling point or a bonus of some sort which shouldn't be used and as a matter of fact, they should want us to be able to change the fluid in them to make them last longer. The fact that they don't offer a drain plug in the lower end models when it is so cheap to do makes me believe that they do want them to fail after they are out of warranty to make more money or that when they fail under warranty, they can blame the customer.

Just to complain a little more with all of you and your John Deere stories, I want to add a little fuel to the fire. The only John Deere I've owned was an 8630. Just a little bigger than a lawn tractor (laughing out loud). Anyway, the reason so many people are having troubles with JD lawn tractors is not because small JD tractors are junk, it's because they've sold out their name.
If you buy a lawn tractor at Lowe's or Home Depot, you're not buying a John Deere tractor at all. You're buying the name. The tractor isn't manufactured by John Deer but it's made in China with cheaper parts and has poor quality. Then the John Deere name is put on the machine because JD has contracts with other stores to sell their products. The problem is, JD can't handle all that production at their plants. So basically, it's all outsourced except for what they're selling at their dealerships.
So my advice is to buy from dealership and buy a model bigger than you think you need. Another piece of advice for anyone that's had hydraulic, transmission, or engine problems, I strongly advise you to take oil samples from faulty mechanisms. If your JD is still under warranty and you use oil that meets or exceeds OEM specifications, then the dealer must honor a warranty. It doesn't matter if there's metal shavings or whatever else from the machine floating through the oil.
The metal will shard into the oil if its faulty from the start. A lot of people seem to be getting hosed. I'm very satisfied as a John Deere customer when it comes to agricultural equipment but you wouldn't catch me mowing my yard with a tin can JD yard tractor in a million years.

The transaxle on my 2002 John Deere L120 is starting to make noise and slip. After I mow a while, it will barely go on level ground, so forget about the small grades we have in our lawn. It's better after it cools down, so I can mow in shifts. I googled what the trouble might be and was shocked to find how many owners are having trouble with John Deere's with the K46 transaxle. Most of their machines were much newer than mine. One man had replaced his K46 with a stronger K66 with good results. He then started making up kits to sell with all the parts necessary for the upgrade. I think the kits started selling for around $1000, including new bigger wheels and tires for the rear.
I was ready to buy one of these kits until I read further in the blog. The kits, presumably because of short supply and resulting higher prices, ended up around $1700, only a little less than the cost of a new machine like mine. Then there was so much demand that they sold out. I wish I had found the blog sooner. I bought the L120 from a regular John Deere dealer and haven't asked about the cost to repair it yet, but like lots of other owners, I'm quite disappointed in the quality of this John Deere product.
From the blog mentioned above, the repair will be $600 to $800 just to put the machine back into original condition. Replacing it with the same quality machine does not make dollar sense if it will not last. So the bottom line is to step up in quality to get something that will last. I'm guessing this means an outlay of $4000 to $5000.

I bought L188 John Deere Tractor for approximately $1900.00 three years ago. This model has a hydrostatic transmission. I also purchased the dual grass catcher, a bumper and a sun top. We have an average yard of less than 1 acre. There is a small hill in the back yard. The third summer we started mowing, the mower just would not pull. It sounded like the transmission was slipping. After inquiring at the Home Depot store and speaking with other small engine repair shops, we find that this model is notorious for this kind of problem. The estimates we were getting for repair work was around $1500.00. About the price of a new one! I went to the John Deere dealer in town and he told me I made my mistake by buying at the Home Depot because their mowers are not true JD parts! How was I to know? I was also told that this model mower with the hydrostatic transmissions was only recommended for less than 15% grade. It didn't specify that in the book anywhere. Now I have a practically new mower with all the extras that I can use as a paperweight. Not to mention all the T-shirts and hats that I will not wear anymore. I received no help from Home Depot or John Deere. I do not feel like I got nearly my monies worth of mowing. It would cost me approximately $1500.00 to repair. Obviously, I will not have it fixed.

I purchased brand new Z245 50 days ago from Home Depot. I have had it serviced several times in its 7 hours of life at Ray's Lawn & Garden. I have mowed with it 4 times at less than an acre and have had nothing but problems with it. Let me preface this by saying I was very excited to get this mower, even spent over $700 on add-ons. Anyways, first, some parts were missing right off the bat and Home Depot ordered them for me, it was nice that Home Depot did this and did not make me go through the dealer. Then the battery was dead and would not charge, Home Depot swapped this out for me as well. Then when I tried to mow for the first time it was not cutting right so I had it looked at and one side of one of the 3 blades was not even sharp, the machine did not cut an edge on it at all, it was completely un-machined! I took a picture and then sharpened it myself on a grinding wheel.
When I took the mower to the dealer for an unrelated issue, I asked that they check the blades and make sure I sharpened it correctly since it wasn't sharpened before which was obviously a defect/quality control issue. The dealer did not cover this under warranty and charged me to sharpen the blades again without informing me first. Personally, I think this should have been sharpened for free as good faith due to the quality control issue. Then after getting that fixed, the parking brake sensor was looked at because it failed to work and the mower was moved forward with the parking brake on which ate up the tires, my fault, kind of, but the sensor is there to make sure that doesn't happen. The dealer said they looked at the sensor and it seemed currently “ok” and refused to replace it or the tire that it chewed on. Then they charged me labor for the time it took to look at the sensor! Then the most serious issue, the left hydraulic pump went out. This mower has 7 hours on it!
After 30 minutes of mowing, the left pump would fade out slowly until you had to dial back the right control so you would still go in a straight line until it would slow down to 1 mph and make a whining noise. I push mowed the rest of my yard when I just spent 4K on "nothing runs like a Deere". When I took it to the dealer, I explained this issue to them and when I got the call that it was "fixed". They said they adjusted the tracking, which I didn't ask for since the tracking was fine for me and I can turn a bolt myself and billed me for the time to adjust it, but the pump was fine. I called 2 extra times and said “Are you sure you checked it out good because I can tell you there is something wrong with the pump.” The service manager seemed somewhat annoyed and said, “Yes the mower appears to be in great shape,” after they let it run and mowed with it for over an hour and I was lucky they didn't bill me for that time, they did me a "favor". They did charge me for adjusting the tracking though even though I didn't ask for that, I refused to pay for work I didn't authorize and they wouldn't let me have the mower back until I paid basically. Anyways, I brought the mower home and again, in 30 minutes, the left pump failed on me causing me to push mow the rest of my yard again this week. I am a residential customer, I don't own a trailer, I have to drive a half hour to pay to rent one, then 45 minutes to the dealer, then take the mower home, then take the trailer back, then repeat the process because the dealer can't fix this lemon of a mower.
I would rather be happy with Deere for years to come like my great grandpa always was, my grandpa always was, and my dad has been, not cursing them every time the name comes up and remembering the money that was taken from me for an unreliable unit.

We bought a John Deere Z245 mower from Home Depot. I service my equipment regularly and had changed the oil at the end of the 2008 mowing season. I always check the oil and gas levels before mowing. During the 2nd mow of the season (only 4 hours into the new oil and oil filter) the piston rod broke and knocked a hole in the engine block. Oil went everywhere and the engine locked up.
This mower had less than 90 hours, a piston rod snapped and John Deere refused to warrant the engine stating lack of lubricant. They said there were metal shavings in the bottom of the crank case. I know how I take care of my equipment and believe me I had fresh oil in the motor and John Deere is a terrible company for refusing to honor the warranty.
The mower is a cheap piece of crap and I will never buy another product from them again. We spent over $20,000 dollars to have a new motor installed. Now during the 2nd mowing of this season the mower will not charge up the battery and it's been in the shop for 3 weeks and I will spend more money on further repairs. I literally hate John Deere. If anyone is interested in a class action suite against them, I'm in.

After speaking with a manager at Lowes, I was informed they have had numerous problems with this particular mower. The opportunity of a lifetime is waiting for any attorney willing to take on John Deere. After five years of continual problems with my John Deere L130, my transaxle is now shot. I cannot afford to replace it, but if I do, my total repair costs will be approaching the purchase price of this machine. In my search for answers regarding the many problems I have experienced, I have discovered that apparently most owners of any of the John Deere "L" series tractors have the same problems I have had, engine smoking and backfiring, blade spindles burning up due to lack of lubrication (since no provisions for lubrication are provided on the stock spindles), front axles breaking, blade/drive clutch failure, uneven cutting, and of course transaxle failure.
The common theme seems to be that the only relief offered by John Deere is (at most) $200 toward the purchase of a new, more expensive John Deere product. No thanks! At a minimum, I would like to see John Deere step up and admit that they used a transaxle that is not durable enough for the intended duty, and replace, at no cost, all of these transaxles with new ones designed for the intended purpose. As a mechanical engineer, at first I thought I might have been overly critical, but after reading hundreds of other complaints similar to mine, I don't think there is much doubt that this is an inferior product being perpetrated on the buying public.

Out of the blue, the transmission went out with only 120 hours on the tractor hour gauge. I now am looking at a minimum of $500.00 to repair it, but if you listen to the experts, it is going to cost me more like $1,000.00 to upgrade the transmission to one that will last more than 50-100 hours. I think this is an absolute disgrace and John Deere should be held accountable, especially when to look on the Internet and see hundreds of complaints about the same problem and some poor people with less hours on their tractors than mine.

I even had the valves adjusted at 250 hours as specified by the John Deere. Well, within 35 hours of John Deere of Covington, Louisiana did their valve adjustments, I had a valve stem bend and knock a hole through my engine.
It turns out that no one had a great answer but three reputable mechanics said that all of the Deere tractors bought at Home Depot, and Lowe's, have much less quality parts installed on them, example, valve stems are made of aluminum, versus steel. The engine cylinder walls are not cast iron lined. This is not legitimate for a company to sell the same tractors and supply cheap internal parts on the tractors that are being sent elsewhere than the dealer. Absolutely a lie that will cost consumers a lot of money because of a phoney purchase caused by the backwards run John Deere. And if anyone from John Deere cares to differ their opinion.

The very expensive commercial Deere’s may be good, I do not know. But this Deere of mine was designed by an idiot. The belt is completely exposed. You go over a twig or small branch and it breaks the belt. I have been through 5 belts in 2 years. I have had the belt fall off over 15 times. All it would take is a simple low cost belt guard. Now, the thing that holds the pulley has broken.
I went to JD again. I can drive there with my eyes closed. I have spent so much time driving there. I was quoted over $2,000 to fix it. That’s what the mower costs new. I just as well buy a new one. Perhaps that’s their plan. But I would rather eat the grass than get another Deere. I now have to get another mower until I can fix the Deere somehow with used parts or something. All I received back was a phone call from a supervisor named Joanne, who essentially brushed me off, accusing me of overusing the tractor and thus being the cause of its mechanical problems, rather than acknowledging that John Deere was responsible for its faulty equipment. Since I purchased my L-120 John Deere lawn tractor in the spring of 2003 for $2330.94, I have had to spend $1852 on repairs.
Most of the repairs are attributable to the PTO clutch which, I learned, had a weak bracket that caused wiring shorts and broken wire connections, leading eventually in my case to the need in 2009 to totally replace the PTO clutch and switch at a cost of $388.34. John Deere has replaced the weak bracket repair shops were using in the past with one that does a better job, but in the meantime, I have had to pay repeatedly for repairs involving damaged wires and broken wire connections that caused my PTO clutch not to function.

This tractor has been garage kept and only used to mow a level residential yard (about 1 acre), and should not have had these failures. Fortunately, the transmission replacement was covered under warranty, and the mowing deck failure is being split 3 ways (dealer, JD, and me) so it's less expensive. But I still think that a mowing deck should last longer than that. Someone said these were substandard decks and they'd been discontinued, in favor of a heavier metal version. We purchased a brand new John Deere L120 Lawn Tractor in 2005, price was $2,800. This was to be the "last lawnmower" we would need as it was a Deere and nothing runs like a Deere. Our previous mower was a Sears Craftsman purchased in 1991 and it is still going strong for its new owner. The L120 machine was used exactly as it was advertised for - cutting grass and light yard work. When the 2-year warranty was up, the motor began to leak oil. I called John Deere - the warranty had expired so they would not cover this. John Deere wanted a high price to transport my machine as well as wanting to charge a very high cost for parts and labor. In the end, we had an authorized Briggs and Stratton dealership fix this machine. Their cost was reasonable.
The mower deck paint is very flakey and has had to be repainted three times since 2005. In 2008 the idler arms had to be replaced - we were constantly adjusting them until nothing more could be done. Our mower deck has three blades. We purchased a replacement spindle in late April 2009, as the spindle was becoming loose. It was installed in June (when grass season started here) and now in August this spindle again needs replacing. The 90-day warranty has expired so once again we are told, “Tough luck - it's not covered.” This week we have had to replace a second original spindle as it broke off completely above the mower deck. The replacement spindles bolt that holds it up has fallen out and the nut that holds the blade on would not stay on. The third spindle is becoming loose and will soon need replacing.
Our lawn is normal, nothing extreme about it so there is no reason for three spindles to require replacing in 4 years of normal wear and tear. Also it is impossible to grease the new spindles as it is set in such a way that a normal grease gun cannot access the recessed nipple. After fixing the second spindle, the steering gear disintegrated and needs replacing. This machine is only 4 years old and has had regular maintenance - it was not used in any extreme manner. I have complained to our local John Deere Service center - all they want to do is sell me a new and improved machine - as if this would ever happen again. I will never purchase any John Deere Products ever again and I have spoken out to anyone who will listen to stay away, far away from any John Deere products as they are not reliable and in our case junk.

In 1995, I bought a John Deere self-propelled push mower. The mower served me well and still runs, except the self-propelled mechanism barely works. So it is basically a push mower. The dealer I bought the John Deere from is Finnerman's in Centreville, Michigan. They always did an excellent job servicing my mower, and I was happy with John Deere's quality. In June, I decided to buy another mower, and I decided to pay more for a John Deere expecting quality and service. I paid $486 for a JS25 self-propelled mower. On the third time I used the mower, I hit the tip of the blade on a metal sea wall and the camshaft was broken. I had a 30-day guarantee to return the mower if not satisfied. I was prepared to pay to fix the mower when to my surprise, the cost for repair was $330, almost the price of a new mower.
I will be 66 years old in October, and I have been cutting grass since I was 8 years old. I have never had a camshaft break. I asked numerous friends, and they also had never had a camshaft break. The dealer said that I would have to contact John Deere directly. I did, and they refused to help in any way. I went back to the dealer for help, and they informed I had to pay the full $330. Further, I was told by the service manager that he had seen hundreds of broken camshafts. If that was the case, then shouldn't something have been done to solve such a problem? I was told a rock, stump, sea wall, etc. could result in breaking the camshaft. I was just lucky it had not happened before. I should have realized something was wrong with the quality, as I paid $600 in 1995 for the mower that is still running.
In my opinion, no one should pay extra money to buy a John Deere self-propelled mower. They won't stand behind a good customer, who has used their products; and their dealer would not help in any way. I exercised my 30-day warranty and received a $164 credit. So my cost for cutting my grass two times and the mower failing on the third try was $322. Thank you, John Deere and Finnerman's. You really know how to treat a good customer.

I called the Athens JD Dealer and they had two spindles and an idler pulley in stock for my L118. I went over to pick them up. And they advised me I would need 8 10mm bolts to mount them with, because the ones they use are designed to break after installed in the removal process, and seven of the eight did break.
I have been a millwright for 20 years and kept my equipment running in top shape. The two spindles I took off were both still good, the idler pulley was still good. One spindle was loose in the deck so I thought the bearing was gone. As I tried to tighten the four bolts in the deck, the bolts broke (snapped off), the shaft pulley on the top was rounded out or starting to round out. An octagon-shaped hole held in place by a 22mm nut attached from the top of the shaft. All parts so far were $125.00 plus my time for installation. I am paid $22.00 an hour, that’s on me, approximately, 2.5 hours and gas plus another trip to Athens, Texas for a spindle pulley. This may be the last deer I buy. I keep it maintained by the manual. I was mowing last weekend and the transmission made a horrible clunk. I pulled onto the driveway and got off only to find oil pouring out of the bottom of the trans. Something came apart inside and blasted through the case. JD won't help. The dealer, of course, wants me to come in and spend $800 to fix it. I spent $2,000 on it to begin with.
Four years about 260 hours and a trans out are flat out unacceptable. I should have spent the money and got an Exmark Zero Turn to begin with. I grew up around JD products that lasted. This is very disappointing and may very well be my last JD purchase. A salesman at a local shop told me that JD, Cub Cadet, etc. have all sold their souls to the box stores to pump volume out to make a buck and to hell with quality and customer service. That was a tractor! A four-cylinder "tractor" sounded like a car! How could they call it a tractor? So, I am a John Deere man!
I have a John Deere F725 52" front cut riding lawn mower. I am very happy with it; it is a very dependable rugged machine. My beef is with the John Deere Co. The plastic grille (part no. "Yes," I said. It was a bit pricey (129.00 CAD plus taxes) but I ordered one anyway (not in stock).
When I opened the package at home, I couldn't find the emblem; it was missing! I only got nine tenths of the part I ordered! I called the parts department and they told me that the emblem is a another part and is sold separately. Now, why did he not tell me so in the first place? (So, I really do have a complaint with him as well).
The emblem is another $8.00! Another eight bucks just for a 4x4 sticky! I said, "Now, that is really stupid!" Tomorrow, when I go in to the city on other business, I'll stop in and pick up the emblem, which, in my opinion, should have already been pasted onto the new grille. And I should not have to pay for it. It's your advertisement, not mine! The least you can do is refund my eight bucks! I like John Deere equipment, so please don't let me say anything bad about the company. Please let me hear from you.

John Deere has no customer service for their popular mowers, either on-line or by telephone. My L130A blew its mower deck belt. My operator's manual, which I took with me to a dealer, covers five models, L100-L130, but does not list or cover the L130A. Evidently, the two 130's have different decks (and none of the photos in the manual matches the L130A). The parts dept. checked my manual and sold me the wrong size.
I pointed out, that the photo for the 48" deck doesn't even complete the belt routing path. The clerk replied that John Deere makes changing belts difficult so that owners take their mowers to dealers instead of doing it themselves. Summary: expect a Dear John from John Deere. The company doesn't provide adequate assistance or even decent manuals. Another 70 miles of travel to return the wrong belt because of a lousy manual!

I purchased a John Deere L130 riding mower in late 2005. Twice now, the front axle split in half, starting at a small injection hole in the axle. According to the dealer, this has never been a problem with the L130 mowers before, implying that I must have run into a house or something to cause the axle to brake. From reading other complaints about the axle, it's clearly a manufacturer defect, cast iron crap. A new axle cost me $74.51 each time. Last year, I had to replace the deck because the anchor bolts holding on a pulley ripped through the deck. Clearly, it was my fault; I must have run over a skunk or something. I noticed that the replacement deck had thicker gauge metal than the original. A new deck cost us over $600. What ever happened to John Deere's reputation of good quality and taking responsibility for poor workmanship? Now, it's always the consumer's fault. I keep a very nice smooth lawn so there is no reason for these problems to occur. It's not like I'm trying to mow over a forest or something.

My husband and I purchased a new John Deere X304 lawn tractor in March 2009. The second time we used it, my husband hit a rotten limb that was hidden under some leaves. I have been mowing this yard over 20 years with many different brands of mowers, have hit stumps, large rocks, tree roots, brick, etc., etc. The most I have ever had to do was replace the blades, never this much damage. I don't know what kind of cheap metal they are using to make the decks of these mowers now, but I do know John Deere is not the company it used to be. Their products are no longer dependable and they don't stand behind their warranty. In the brochure they hand out, it says you can return the product within 30 days if you're not satisfied. Well, we will see. So far, they only say they will have to talk to the company. I bet they are racking it up with repair bills these days, seeing as they are building sorry equipment and charging out the wahoo to repair it.

John Deere LT133. I have had my Deere for about 4 years I believe. The only problem I have was the front cowl hinge. Cheap plaster and just opening and closing, the cowl cracked the hinge from the bumper. Fortunately, it was only a $40 part. I found a new one on eBay. Being that the hinge gets a lot of use, would think they should have used metal. Also, be sure to do good maintenance. Oil change - either keeps gas tank full or totally empty in off season. Water builds up and will cause engine to misfire. I had a Deere 111 for about 15 years. Rear gears finally went out but it was a great machine. Of course it was built of metal and stronger than today's models.

I purchased a John Deere L100 in late 04 because my cheap rear-engined 8 hp Murray rider finally gave it up after 8 years (much of the first years riding over some pretty dusty, rough terrain). I was at a new house with a bigger, nice, smooth sodded yard, so I figured I would get a Deere, albeit an entry-level unit from Home Depot. I say all of this to go ahead and address what some of the other postings talk about, in that some expectations are too high. Well, when a $500 Murray lasts as long as it did with a lot of abuse and not a lot of maintenance, a $1,500 John Deere should last twice as long with very little abuse and very good maintenance.
So the story goes with mine. Even with the aforementioned regular maintenance, and a pampered life (always garaged to boot), it has had compression problems with the engine where it would not start unless I slightly turned the flywheel with my hand; it has had a bent front axle making the tires literally wear away on the outside in a short period of time. The pulleys squeak and rattle. The brake/clutch has always worked poorly. The deck will not stay level and therefore scalps areas often. Most recently, the engine finally gave out as there are metal shavings everywhere. The dealer says it is likely due to oil starvation as this engine has no oil pump and tends to starve when going up any incline, etc. To fix the engine and the front axle now will be $1,600 (yes, more than the cost of a new one).
John Deere Corporate was rude to me and said not only they would not help me now with out-of-warranty assistance, but also they would not even cover it if it were still in warranty. They indicate that it must be my fault as a lack of oil lubrication is due to a lack of oil and maintenance. The front axle is my fault too as I must have hit something (yeah, maybe a stick in the grass). I will never buy another John Deere product. I told Corporate this, and they said fine. Obviously, now I must spend another $1,500-$2,000 on another new mower (I probably will go with a Husqvarna) and throw away the Deere that still looks nearly brand new. All of the time and effort dealing with the ordeal has been a strain.

I was a self-employed plumber and saw this all the time with faucets and other items. I would not go to these places and purchase things for my customers to avoid callbacks. This machine was brought back from John Deere in January 2008 and dropped off in our driveway stuck in gear and with a dead battery.
Contacted Mike in Service and he said they could no longer get parts for our machine and didn't know when they could come and pick it up. We had to hire someone to plow our driveway during this time. I called and talked to Gary the manager and he said we could take it anywhere to get repaired. Since no one showed up from January to June to pick this up, we ended up getting it to the Racin Station in Driggs, Idaho. It took them five months to get the manufacturing defects' parts for this machine and now it is costing another $2,330.00 for repairs. The defective parts are Shift Drum Lever, Shift Index Lever, Park Lever Arm. Bombardier says not their problem and John Deere Customer Service in Moline, IL (Debbie) says not their problem. This machine has about 800 miles on it for 3 years old. We do not know if this is on the recall list or not. Our VIN number is **.

You can't have steel spindles in a steel hub without something wearing and in this case the spindles. I now have an electrical problem - the battery is not being charged up. Thought it was an old battery but after replacing it with a new one the same problem persisted. I now keep a trickle charger on at all times until I can figure out the problem. The front deck gauge wheel brackets are way too flimsy, have replaced one set already and straightened out the old ones. Granted, the area that I use the mower for is not a manicured lawn but I have been mowing this area for the last 8 years with a Murray riding mower and never replaced anything but blades and belts.
The John Deere deck is made from metal far too brittle for its intended use. Any stress or vibration will shatter the deck as it has no give whatsoever. I will be out $400 for a new deck plus the original price of $1800 and still will not be able to use the mower as it will most certainly fail again. No more overpriced green junk for me. I purchased a John Deere JS40 2 years ago at my local Loew's. I used the unit once and found that the front wheels were not assembled properly,(the washer's were on the wrong side of the axles.. I took it to a local repair shop(Loews does not service the equipment themselves).
The next problem occurred the following spring. I had stored the unit for the winter, and folded the handle down. Because of the placement of the cables, they caught on the hinges and broke both cables. I consulted my repair shop, and they suggested that I take it to a JD dealer, since they would have to order the parts anyway.. I took the mower to Northern Aggregates in Fulton, NY, and after about a week I found out that they had to order the parts and that they had ordered incorrect part and were awaiting another one..
When I finally got the mower back, I tried to cut the grass and found that it was not adjusted and the clutch would not engage to start the drive.. Again went to my own repair shop, and they fixed the problem. I stored the unit for winter again, (and did not fold the handle).. I cut the grass a few times, and again the clutch would not engage and I took it back to my own repair shop, and found that the cable had broken at the point it went to the unit where the drive gear was located..
Again took it back to my dealer and he put a new cable on the mower.. I used it a few more times and only one wheel would drive, so took it to my repair shop again, and found that the D clip was off the left wheel. That was replaced (that was 2 weeks ago), and I was able to cut my lawn at least once without a problem.. To date I have had this mower to a repair shop 5 times in the 2 years I have had the mower.. I purchased this mower to replace an aging Agway mower which only needed a tuneup, because I had retired and didn't want to put anymore money in an old machine.. What a mistake, this John Deere has cost me almost as much in repairs as the original purchase price.
I have paid over $300.00 in repairs to this mower because of defective parts and faulty dealer repair (not including the cables which broke when I folded the handle).

I asked the dealer how long this bushing would last, and was told it was a design flaw of John Deere and that I would be lucky if it lasts a year! Was told that I could try to keep the tire greased, but it probably wouldn't do any good. Talk about cheap! In less than 30 days my JD 190C is NOT working again! The same problem occured that happened 8/11/08: fuse blew as a result of the wiring harness getting wrapped around the front pulley. The dealer originally said it was operator error when the mowing deck was put on. I don't think so as the problem happened again and we never even touched the mowing deck. The last person to handle the mowing deck was the dealer themselves, and the wiring harness dropped down again and wrapped around the front pulley and the wiring harness broke. If the wiring harness dropped down the 1st time, you would think the dealer would fix it so that it would not drop down a 2nd time. We will never buy a John Deere lawn tractor again! They are made cheaply and are very unreliable!
We haven't even paid the bill from 8/11/08 which was $358.22 and the tractor is broke again! I can't afford to pay for this piece of junk to get fixed again! Seems like somebody is screwing somebody! John Deere LA135 Limited Edition 42 inch riding mower. After hearing all the problems with the spindle housing reported here, I decided to make sure they were properly greased on my mower after ~30 min of usage. When I tried to grease them all the grease came out around the grease gun nozzle. I removed the grease fitting from the spindle housing and snapped it into the grease gun, what I found is that only 1/10 of the grease went into the grease fitting the rest came out around the grease gun nozzle. The grease fitting was defective on both spindle housing in that the nipple was too short such that the grease gun nozzle could not lock around it.
Went to Lowes and got grease fittings that had a long nipple and then I was able to grease the spindle housing, which had very little grease in it because of the defective fittings (used a flashlight to look inside the spindle housing when the grease fitting was removed). When the spindle housing was filled with grease the excess came out around the spindle shaft under the deck.
Just thought people should be aware of this problem. Talked to a John Deere dealer about it, and they did give me advice on how to replace the grease fittings, but only after I asked the right questions. Of course it was under warranty, but pickup and delivery was $90. The 5 grease fittings on the front end of the mower had long nipples and I was able to grease them without any problem.
No damage as far as I know since I greased the spindle housing right away instead of waiting for 8 hrs of usage to go by, as indicated in the manual.

I contacted MacLeods (dealer)and dropped it of to be fixed the mechanic said it had to be a defect and it should be covered. Two weeks go by before the dealer calls me and then says John Deere will not cover the engine. The area rep said the govener had a wrench mark on it and accused me of turning it up causing the engine to over rev.and there is nothing they can do about it.I am a mechanic myself and would not do such a thing. If there was a wrench on governer it was done at the dealer or the factory.
I called John Deere customer office and was told by Amber there that they stand behind there dealers decision.I am now left with a 2200.00 dollar piece of JUNK..I Found out the hard way that John Deere doesnt stand behind there products and the dealer doesnt care either.

Last year I bought a JD L130 series riding mower. I bought it with one year interest free no payments in October 2007. The tracter has a total of 32 hours operation on it. It was at the 32 hour mark when I was mowing that the mower started making some noise and then the belt came off. After some examination, I saw that the middle spindle had completly seperated from the deck and had fallen through. When I got the tractor back to the garage and took the deck off, I noticed that the middle spindle was missing two bolts. Either they were never installed or they were not properly installed. The JD dealer told me that those bolts are designed never to come out. I am guessing that he insinuates that I took them out becasue he said he would not cover that item under warranty and the cost to replace the deck now is at $1100 dollars, half of what I paid for the mower. I am going after JD on the basis of the Unform Commercial Code on implied warranties and sellers remedies.

We bought a John Deere 190C automatic lawn mower from Lowe's a couple of years ago. Right as the 2 yr. warranty was expiring, we started to have nothing but problems with our Deere. First one of the pulleys broke so we had that fixed. After the warranty expired (within one month) the belt kept popping off and the tension was tight. Finally we thought we fixed the problem with the belt coming off, and then it kept blowing fuses and the PTO wouldn't work.
The dealer came to pick up the tractor and wanted $58.00 for pickup and delivery and we only live maybe 7 miles away! Ripoff!!! It took the dealer 2 weeks to fix the tractor. They said the wiring harness got stuck on a pulley and shorted out the PTO. Hmmm, sounds like a design flaw to me!! Had to get a new wiring harness and new clutch, not to mention a new fuse.
The kicker... I mowed my lawn for about an hour after getting the tractor back home from the dealer and guess what? The front left tire fell off!! And I just got it back from the dealer!! Needless to say, I will NEVER buy a John Deere ever again as they are JUNK! They are NOT quality machines. I will stick with Kubota tractors from here in out!!

In October of 2004 we purchased a John Deere Gator HPX. It ran pretty good for about a year and a half but for a $10,000 vehicle we expected more. We have spent over $5,000 on repairs since then. We were always told there was nothing they could do for us. Finally we were able to get the name of the regional rep, these guys don't like to have their names out there..pretty spineless!! They are willing to buy our gator for what I could sell it to anyone else and then sell us another.
I will never own any product from John Deere againl. They then will sell this gator to some unsuspecting buyer. So to that employee who has worked for John Deere and is tired of all the complaining, I did buy my gator from an authorized John Deere retailer and am still getting a very bad deal from them. May be Steve, you should tell them to stand behind their products and quit being so spineless. John Deere is a terrible company. Their product is no longer a quality product. Eventually their reputation will catch up to them and they will go out of business. The sooner the better.
We are out over $5,000 in repairs and now have a gator that will not stay started.

I purchased a Deere Tractor GT245 in 2005 at nearly $6,000. It ran good and cut good. At approx. 65 hours and 11 month later it refused to start. Gas poured out of the engine and on to the floor. I had the dealer pick it up and they claimed there was too much oil in the crank case. The changed the oil and filter and also sharpened the blades.
I expected to pay for the sharpening but not the other service. They claimed the repairs were not warranty items. I had not over filled the oil. The machine was brought back and used twice then the same thing occurred. Back to the shop and they claim to have put a new carb. on it. This time they did not charge for the repair. Apparently what should have been done the first time.
The engine did not run as fast as before, but it started good with the exception of about 3 times during the next year. During those times it did finally start, so I did not complain. Yesterday the same thing happened. Won't start, gas pour out of the engine and the oil now has gas in it. Now I can not mow and am sure I will be stuck with another repair bill. I bought a JD because I wanted the best! Lesson learned.
Currently only out the 1st repair bill of over $100.00. I am sure they will slam me with a repair bill and tell me it was bad gas or service needed or trash in the fuel. There is a problem with those engines that they will not admit.

I have heard many times that nothing runs like a Deere so I took the plunge and purchased a John Deere JS45 front caster walk behind mower from my local Lowes store. I mowed my lawn one time and later found a surpise.
A large plastic part that attaches to the grip and control area came off when the plastic washer-like part broke off. Why use a cheap plastic part as an attaching point that can break off so easily on such an expensive mower?
The BIG surprise came when I went to move the mower to another part of the garage, I found a large (6-7 round) oil puddle on the garage floor under the deck. It seems that it leaks oil right at the front just behind the valve cover. I cleaned it up and tightened the valve cover screws thinking that this was the problem. Well, the leak was back within a few minutes. It seems that the leak is coming from somewhere in the lower front part of the engine.
I took it back to Lowes and got a full refund. I also found ackward using the 'Mowmentum' lever that controls the rear traction speed. You have to push this lever forward as you are walking, making it a bit touchy to handle. I was really disapointed at how bad such an expensive brand new mower can be. Mark this as my last John Deere mower.

The last time I started it...it took 40 pulls before the enging would start. I contacted Lowe's about the problem and they told me to bring it in and they would send it out to an authorized dealer for repairs. Well the mower sat at Lowe's for to weeks before the authorized repair company came to get. I tried to find out where the mower was sent for repair so that I could find out when the repairs would be finished and I could pick up the mower...Lowe's didn't have that information so now I am stuck!
This mower has been by far the worst mower I have ever owned...I deeply regret purchasing it! I replaced my 11 year old Honda mower with this John Deere which was a big mistake...my Honda served me well for 11 years and only had to go in once for a tune-up. The Honda always started on the first or second pull...fantastic machine. I would never purchase another John Deere product again...poor quality, poor design and lack of dependability...I only hope that one day they call me to say the mower is fixed and to come and get it. I will mostly try to sell it and then purchase another Honda. One tries to support American made goods but when they are crap your left to purchase quality mfg foreign products.
I received painful blisters on my fingers from pulling the start cord 40 times and my arm was sore from pulling.

I have had the mower in the shop 10 times over the past 4 years with exactly the same problem. I have been forced to mow with my small back-up mower. Which does the job fine, but takes a long time.
After working on the mower the last time, I was told by the dealer that they simulated the grade of my lawn, and the mower did die. My small mower, however, does not. I purchased a X-300 lawn mower about one year ago. It came with a two year warranty. About 5 weeks ago the engine failed. It would not run at all. I paid about $2,600.00 for the mower. I purchased it from my local John Deere dealer. I have purchase a fair amount of John Deere equipment from him in the past, including a 65 horse power tractor. My dealer told me that the cheaper models that are sold at Lowes are not of John Deere quality and that the X series are built of John Deere quality. I paid twice as much for a mower that he told me would run for many years.
About 3 weeks after I took the mower to my Dealer for repairs, the mechanic (Jean) call me and informed me that JD would not fix my mower under the warranty. He told me that he disagreed with JD and that he had been talking to someone at JD for a week trying to explain to them that the failure of the engine was caused by a bolt coming loose. He said that he had over 20 years experience as a JD mechanic, and was trained and certified by JD but the area rep., who was young kid just out of school, would not agreed to fix my mower. He told me that I need to call JD's 800 number. He told me that the reason my mower failed was because a bolt, INSIDE THE ENGINE, had come loose and caused the engine to lockup. He went on to explain that he had sent pictures to JD and they have decided that because there were metal flakes in the engine they woould not repair my mower. JD believed that the failure was due to "lack of lubrication" and that he believed that JD is wrong and that the metal flakes are because of the nut that came loose inside the engine.
I called the JD 800 number. I spoke with a lady (Aiylsha) who refused to give me her last name, or an employee number or any way to ID her other than her first name. She told me that JD would not fix mower because the engine failer was due to "lack of lubrication" I explained that the JD mechanic had explained to me that the "lack of lubrication" was caused by a mechanical failer of the engine (A METAL NUT HAD COME LOOSE INSIDE THE ENGINE). After I tried to talk to her about what happens inside of an engine when metal parts come loose, she told me that she did not know anything about engines. She then REFUSED to let me talk to her supervisor. She told me that the only phone number available to the public was the 800 number that I had called her on. She said that she would have the area rep. call me in 4 to 5 business days. She refused to give me his number so that I could call him. She also refused to give me his name.
I called my dealer (Smith & Smith in Franklinton LA) back and Jeff told me that he had looked at my engine and it was clearly the loose bolt that caused to engine to fail. He said that he like his mechanic had over 20 years experience and he was postive that the engine failed due the loose bolt inside the engine. He told me that a new engine would cost about $2,200.00 and he did not even offer to give me a cut on the price. I have purchased over $25,000.00 of JD equipment from him in the last 3 years and was the one that talked me into the more expensive lawn mower, because it had a 2 year warranty and was built to JD quality. I had been running JD tractors for years and never had an real problems, so I believed him.
With no phone number I went to the JD web site, and to investor relations and found thier SEC filling. I got from there various SEC forms about 5 different phone numbers. I called 309- and got a lady by the name of Tammy S. A JD employee with a last name, I thought that I had hit the jackpot. I told her part of my problem, she transfered me to her boss, Andy T. He seemed reasonable and told me that he could help me with my problem. He was going to call Jeff and Jean at Smith and Smith and call the area rep. and get back with me on 7-7-08. He did not call me back. Instead a Matt C. called me. He said that he is the area rep. and he called to explain to me why JD was not going to honor my warranty. He start out with the same story about the "lack of lubrication".
I explained that if it were due to lack of lubrication, it was caused by a bolt coming loose. When pushed, he ammited that JD only believes that it is "likely" that the lack of lubrication was my fault. I told him that I had done everything required by the warranty agreement, I had checked the oil before using my mower and within minutes of the engine failing. The oil was "full" at both times. The mechanic at JD and a friend of my that is a New Holland mechanic told me the questions to ask him. He admitted during our conversation: 1. the loose bolt in the engine is a mechanical failure. 2. The mechanic Jean is certified by JD and he continued to say that he respects Jeans opinion. 3. several other points that are very important.
At this point he told me that JD had decided and they were not going to change thier position. I asked him to sign a letter offically informing me for this decision. I told him that I need the letter signed by him so that I could sue him along with JD. Did not impress him at all. I also told him that I was going first thing in the morning to get my mower, before JD tries to charge me storage on it. I know that this sounds hard to believe, but it is true. I have talked to 4 people from JD and my local dealership. Two have say it was Mechanical failure, one agreed that the loose bolt is a mechanical failer, but he says that it is JD policy that they will not fix my mower because of metal flakes in the engine. The fourth said that she does not understand engines and the best I can tell, she is the final decision.
I hate to chase a princple to the poor house, but this is just to insulting to let go. My daughter finished law school in May, and expects to be able to sue for me by Jan. I have been paying verious people to mow my yard and I guess I am going to buy a mower, but I will not be JD. I have to mow my yard and it would be stupid to spend $2,200.00 to fix a mower with out any warranty . But I got lucky and found an aftermarket that would work, which cost me about $80.00. I got my mowing finished, finally, then when it came time to mow again, my mower threw another belt, and I believe the other spindle is tearing up, and I barely got started mowing. I
have had several mowers that were a lot cheaper that lasted me ten years before the mowing decks wore out. And I gave the mower, minus the deck, to an old man to ride around on. My husband took the deck to the authorized service dealer, Parkway Tractor, in Asheville, NC. This trip is an 80-mile round trip from our home.
Before he could return home, a service rep called to say that they would not honor John Deere's supposed two-year warranty; a new deck would cost me $587.00. I called John Deere's 800 customer support number, and I was told that John Deere's customer support would not override a dealer's decision. I asked to speak to the JD territory rep for North Carolina. His name is John, and a few days later, he, too, refused to honor John Deere's warranty.
I made the 80 mile round trip again, this time to pick up my broken mower deck. This time, I spoke with the service manager at Parkway Tractor. When I told him that I had maintained my mower carefully, and I had used it for really one season, and I planned to file a consumer complaint, I was told, I could do anything I wanted, but other people had tried, and they hadn't gotten anywhere. I contend that I did nothing to cause such major damage to my mower. I was mowing a level lawn when the spindle dropped out.
I feel that John Deere manufactured a defective part, and the company is refusing to honor its two-year warranty. I regret that I did not read the complaints from so many others on the consumer affairs web site BEFORE my husband and I purchased my mower. Almost since the first use we have had nothing but trouble with this mower which is a Saber Model. It has been back and forth to the place of purchase several times and they have came to my house to work on it as well to no avail, it still remains broke down as it useally does each time it is used it seems.
My complaints have gotten the retailer to attempt repairs again to no avail, as it remains broke down now. I was informed by the personel that, that is why johndeere stopped makeing such model shortly after I bought it due to so many problems but they never would swap or attempt helping me get into another selection, I wanted a lawn mower that worked, not refund. Now I have to attempt use of a neihbors lawn mower to cut grass, because the albatross I purchased has never worked right.
The consequence to this matter is now as it has been since the time of purchase that I have a mower that I have to attempt to put money in just to cut my grass and that is adverse to our decision to purchase this product being on a fixed income. We are now faced as we have been since the time of purchase to have to continue to pour money into it or buy another of which we dont have. I guess I got a deck with a bad stamp. Once we figured out what was wrong the dealership told me to get out the old persuader and give it a whack. We fixed the problem by fabbing a spacer. So Now we have new spindles, a deck that is mowing nicely for 6 months 50 hours then it happens all over again. Now the left spindle seizes up. So it starts all over again. Remove the deck replace the spindles, replace the belt the idler pulleys are making noise so replace them as well.
As I am looking under the deck I can see the body is rusting away to nothing. The powder coating is coming off in big sheets. Once I start wire brushing the metal it was like opening a big box of worms. It is just going to continue and continue and eventually rust away. You would have to remove and sandblast the thing and have it painted. When I purchased this mower I thought it would be a 5 year investment and then I would probably need a new mower. I'm sure it will be sooner. The dealership said that John Deere would tell me the rust is due to the fact that I live 20 miles from the Salt Water. My reply is I live 30 miles away and if that is the case maybe they should only sell them in Nebraska.

In April I bought what I thought was a new 100 series John Deer lawn mower. When I got it home it aready had oil in and time on the hour meter. From the first time I used it when lowing the cutting deck it made a terible noise and shook real bad. I kept checking the level on the deck thinging that was the trouble. I used it three times about fifteen minutes each time. Final I called the JOhn Deere headquarters and they told me to take it to dealer nearest me, which was; Coufal-Prater in Cameron Texas. I left it and when they called me they said it had pieces of string which looked like boot laces wrapped around the top spindle and it burned the belt up.( it cost me about $93.00 dollars our of my pocket to fix it)
Now this lawn mower acted up up from frist time I got on it. My thoughts someone bought it and messed it up and brought it back and they sold it to me as a new mower. My wife and my son witnessed the noise the first time I got on it. I am sixty seven years old and this is the first John Deere lawn mower I ever bought. Also I have mowed my yard for many years and one thing I do is check each time before I mow for anything that migh be laying in the yard that would tear a mower up. I don't know if there is anyway to check the ID number to see if it had been sold before I bought it and brought back to Lowe's. It is a JOhn deer riding lawn mowe series 100. Can the ID number be traced to see how many owners have bought it?

It ran exactly the same. 3 service calls later - still runs awful. Here is it a year later and now it won't run more than 10 minutes. They replaced brand new parts I already replaced and charged me over $400.00 to do it. Then they tell me they don't have time to run the mower for 30 minutes until the engine sputters and dies. in other words they don't have time to service it properly. Great! Lets take the widow to the cleaners. The little lady won't know the difference anyway. I have a John Deere Lawn Ornament surrounded by 6' of grass. The bills still come in my deceased husband's name despite me telling them for the past 9 years he died right after the purchase of the mower. Insensitive and caloused.
the dealership wrote off the late fees I refused to pay but isn't going to refund any repair over charges. John Deere corporate sent me a little thank you for being a customer card and a coupon for 35% off my next parts and service bill. Mower still dead on the lawn. John Deere L120 riding mower, purchased in 2003 at local Home Depot, barely lasted out the 2 year warranty, after which the transmission failed, causing the mower to shut down after mowing for a few minutes. This was a very poorly designed machine. The transmission, a Tuff Torq model K46AC, looks tiny and undersized compared to other comparable mowers. Why not a bigger transmission?
This cheaply built machine appears to have been designed to take advantage of John Deere's good name. It is basically a throw away that costed over $2000.00 for 2 and 1/2 years of use. Not only do we feel suckered, having invested so much money in such a poor product, there is the trauma of realizing that the John Deere company, for so long a quality name, put out a machine that you can't even refurbish in a cost effective manner. The transmission, a poor choice for the mower anyway, is only available through a dealer and will be expensive. We will probably sell the motor and the seat and discard the rest.
My dad bought this machine, and he loved tractors and was a mechanic. He lived pretty far from any John Deere dealer. He had looked at this mower at the John Deere dealers, but bought at Home Depot because it was close by. This mower was a supreme disappointment to him in his last years. He's mowing Greener Pastures now, and I hope he's up there telling Mr. John Deere how his company has taken a dive with these cheap machines.

My husband purchased a John Deere mower L-100 a little over 2 years ago. Last season he was experiencing some trouble with it but just put it up till this April and loaded it up to take it back to the dealer. We did not purchase the extended warranty but still thought it was worth fixing since it looks like a brand new mower. The problem started with the deck. The bolts were not tighten from the factory like they should have and it worked loose. Both the shafts were worn out, the bearings are bad, and then the cam shaft is bad in the motor. The mower itself probably has less than 50 hours on it. The repairman said to my husband after telling us it would take $900 to fix it,
We have had a lot of problems with this model, they quit making the cam shaft plastic. They never reveiled that information at the time of purchase that 2006 and 2007 John Deere mowers had a cam shaft was made of plastic. Since we are so discussed with it and have talk to a few other people, that repairman was right, there are alot of problems. In all fairness they did offer $100 trade in on another mower. But the guy that loaded it back into the truck, with the mower still off of it said, You could probably piece it out and get more than $100, the seat, by itself almost cost that. Long ago, I bought a little Murray riding mower that far out last this, it's problem was just rust. We though having a John Deere would be top of the line not the bottom. Now everytime my husband see's a commercial about JD or any thing with a logo on it, he cringes. I guess it's a push mower or maybe a new craftsman in the future.
Our yard is large and the grass is very high, we have an non riding lawn mower in pieces that the dealer wants almost what was paid for it to fix it. We felt like they were just trying to get us to buy a bigger one but wanted us to go in debt to buy it. When that didn't work, the sales dept and the service people acted indifferent, I went to sit in the truck while we waited for them to load it back up. Of course they didn't put it back together, they thought we would purchase another. We took it home in pieces and it still is!

We purchased a John Deere 340 lawn mower on Sat. Apr 12,08. First of all the equipment sits on their lot in the weather all year long. The tractor had extensive sun damage and old gas sitting in it. We were told to take it home for the weekend and bring it back Monday for repairs and detailing. My husband used it Sat. evening for a short time, then later when he tried to start the mower it wouldn't start. Sunday he replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs, and it still wouldn't start. Mon. 4/14 he returned the mower to Jim Reaves and explained the problems, and asked them to order us a brand new mower. Jim Reaves was hesitant to comply, but finally agreed. The new mower was to arrive in a week.
Well, a week passed and I called Mr. Reaves he said it was on it's way; I inquired about the bagger also, and he said they hadn't seen it. I wanted the bagger to be installed when the mower arrived, but we received the mower on 4/25/08, and the bagger was no where to be found. I called on 4/22 to follow up on the bagger, and he said it would be here on 4/29. I called on 5/1 amd was told the bagger and turbo had arrived, but we were waiting on the chute. We paid $800 for a bagger, and Bobby, the parts manager, told me they didn't order the chute. I called Jim Reaves on 5/2 after speaking with Bobby, and he said the chute was on freeze from John Deere and wouldn't be shipped till the middle of May. He then proceeded to tell me that he called JD and told them he needed one now!
I asked him why he was selling baggers if he couldn't get the chutes? He didn't have an answer for me, he just continued to blame John Deere. I also told Jim Reaves that this was the worst customer service I had ever received. Each of his employees told me and my husband a different lie. Jim stated that I could bring the machine back if I wanted to. Well, if my husband didn't have lawns to cut this weekend I would return his lawn mower. Unlike the staff of Reaves Tractor, we have integrity, and will be cutting our customer's grass this weekend. Again, the bagger chute should be here on 5/5; however, if it is not I will be going to get our $800 back. This is a disgrace to John Deere dealers everywhere. Had I know we would have this much hassle I would have purchased the JD elsewhere!
Well the financing of the mower was not done as agreed. Johnny, the salesman, didn't disclose to us any of the information about adding insurance to the loan. He also gave us a different rate than he quoted us, which I found while signing the contract. He also did not disclose all the charges included to us on the settlement page. I found the copy in the trash, I would not allow my information to be thrown out; unless shredded and that is something they don't do. I brought all the incorrect copies home with me to shred. We have wasted time, gas, and lost lawn care business, due to this hassle.

Later the mower decides it doesn't want to start.
The dealer says I need to replace the spark plug. The didn't fix the problem so I called a local mower repairman. He said to not bring it to him because he hates the JD mowers. I want to know why I can't go to the official John Deere website and find a parts listing for that type of mower? They manufactured it. I need to know what size tire to buy, to replace mine. All I got everywhere I went on their site was model# not found not accurate part #. etc. They say Nothin' runs like a Deere So obviously, they expect their products to last, so they should have an easier way to access part #'s for their older model products.
I spent a great deal of my time searching for this information, and still don't have an answer. It seems as though this should have been an easier thing to do. I guess now I'll have to go out an get the tire off and take it to my local tire store, so they can look it up. For all the time I spent on their useless website, this is probably what I should have done in the first place, I would be mowing my lawn by now. I have worked for John Deere for some time now. I am tired of hearing people complain about the products. Most of the complaints are about big box store bought products, not from a dealership. You got what you paid for; they are built for cost units, not premiums that dealers sell. Second of all, if you purchased an extended warranty through the box stores it has nothing to do with Deere, so again that's your problem. Maybe you should have researched that a bit more. If you had gone to your local dealer they will tell you that the units are built to cost units, not premiums. You the consumer need to think about it for a second; its like paying $30,000 for a new car or $11,900 for a new car.

The main drive belt was replaced since it showed signs of wear and was somewhat brittle; no improvement. The unit was taken to the dealer and they determine the transmission was shot and replacement would be about $500.00. The dealer also said they have seen a lot of problems with transmissions on the L series of tractors. The unit has only 240 hours, approximately 50 hours per cutting season. A call to the John Deere Customer Communications Center was fruitless; the agents response to all of my questions was that the unit is out-of-warranty. Needless to say I will not pay $500.00 for another 240 hours of operation. I have owned many lawn tractors, mostly inexpensive, low end. The decision to purchase a John Deere was based on my desire to purchase a unit that last many years. Having a major component failure at 240 hours is unacceptable. The cost of purchase is over $9.00 for every hour of operation. To further exacerbate the situation I can purchase, through the dealer, the transmission for the same $500.00 to self install. I would consider replacing it myself if John Deere would provide one at dealer cost and not an inflated price. Nothing breaks-down like a Deere.

I purchased a John Deere (JS25) from a local Lowe's Home Improvement store in April 2007. From day one, I had trouble cranking the mower. I used the mower for a couple of months. (Everytime the mower was hard to crank, but I loved the way the mower cut and handled, so I didn't stress over the difficulty starting the mower too much.) I contacted Lowe's Service Advantage (additional warranty I purchased) in late '07 to file a complaint and get the issue fixed. They referred me to a local John Deere dealer. The dealer had the mower for 3 weeks, and in that time they tore the motor down and said that they could not find what was wrong. I contacted John Deere who, in the beginning, was helpful and instructed me to have the dealer issue a DTEC order with John Deere that would allow the dealer and John Deere to communicate with one each other about the mower.
I contacted John Deere 2 weeks later (because they never called me), and they said that there was strange marking on the cylinders of the motor. They believe that the markings may have caused the mower to lose compression and prevent it from cranking. They said that it is possible that the mower was cranked at some time without oil. If that happened, I certainly did not do it. I filled the mower with the oil that was provided with the mower before I ever unfolded the handles. John Deere is assuming that the mower was not defective when they received it. John Deere did not manufacture the motor for this mower. It is a Briggs and Stratton mower that was shipped (sealed....with no ACCESS) to John Deere, and they install it on their mower. John Deere is assuming that the mower was started without oil because that is the only thing they can come up with to explain the strange markings on the cylinder heads. They refuse to believe that the motor may have been defective when they received it although they have no definitive way to back that up.
Deere will not honor their warranty, and now I need to replace the motor on a 9-month-old lawnmower. I paid $400 for the mower from Lowe's + $40 in additional warranty coverage through Lowe's, and now the dealer is telling me that it will cost another $270 to fix the mower. In essence...I will have a nearly $700 walk-behind mower. It is completely ridiculous to have to put up with this type of issue from a company like John Deere.

I purchased a John Deere riding mower in July 2004 from Home Depot in Vero Beach FL at a cost of $1,799.00. I used the mower for 2 months with no problems. In 9/04, this area of Florida was hit by two hurricanes in two weeks, and due to damage to my residence, I was out of the house for 8 months, and had hired lawn service during that time. This in turn caused the 50 hour required service to be done later than John Deere Inc. beleives to be responsible.
However, the issue here is really the 100 hour service which was performed by Moore Motors on 9/8/07. The first time I used the mower after this service, all the oil leaked out and the engine seized. Moore Motors picked up the mower in October 2007 and still has it to this day. Their response to the problem is that they fouund no reason for the oil to leak out, which is moot point, since it did leak out. They do not accept responsibility, although their oil change was obviously the culprit.
A call to John Deere, Inc. went nowhere, as the person I talked with just stayed focused on the fact that the 50 hour service was not performed when they thought it should have been. I followed up this phone call with a registered letter to John Deere in Moline, Ill., to which I have never received a response. I also have never heard from Moore Motors, who still has the mower. I went to Lowes, picked it up, took it home, read the Quick Start instructions, checked the oil, poured in the gas, added the gas "freshener", and started it on the first pull. I mowed two and one-half rounds in my back yard, heard a fierce clatter and found that the engine blew up. Totally frozen.
No complaint here. I took the lawn mower back to Lowes within two hours of buying it, and they refunded my money without any comment. Bottom line, John Deere ain't what it used to be. How long does a John Deere last? About two hours.

John Deere Credit has listed a contract that I am not signatory to on my credit report and also indicated is that the payment is delinquent. The contract was signed by Lance S. who was my ward over 20 years ago. I have helped Lance and his wife with some payments but because of a divorce, neither he nor his wife have made payments for the last few months. Lance has contacted John Deere Tractor to come and repossess the tractor. I did not co-sign for the tractor and in no way conveyed any intention to John Deere Credit that I would assume this debt.

We have the lt130 lawn tractor. The spindles keep wearing out and they supposedly upgraded to a greaseable spindle. This past summer we replaced the upgraded spindles 3 times. Our warranty runs out in March of next year, and they have informed us that we will be paying the cost of replacing these spindles everytime in the future. They will not replace their mistake with these spindles for free or offer to find a solution. The last time the spindles went bad, a pully also broke off and they replaced it with a different pully and installed it crooked.
