I purchased a 22 Hp 48" zero turn "Z-Force" lawn mower. The mower currently has 44 hours on the hour meter. It has been back to dealer 4 times. The pto belt that drives the mower deck has burned off/broken each time. Once after bringing it home from the dealer I mowed for 9 minutes before it broke again. The dealer has attempted several different fixes from the clutch update that Cub Cadet said would fix the issue, to washers in various locations, to now removing a pulley.

The dealer and I have contacted Cub Cadet numerous times and have gotten the run around. Cub Cadet has clearly said that it is an engineering/design issue otherwise they wouldn't have a clutch update as well as their staff indicating that this is a problematic mower. The dealer has also said they have had multiple problems with the same mower. I have requested a buy back however, almost two months later nothing and even a phone call from Cub Cadet customer service. I have also tried to speak to my lawn and request that it stops growing while I attempt to correct this problem however it now needs to be baled. I have never written a review and I am not a constant complainer but I am so frustrated. Cub Cadet gets a huge thumbs down with me. Don't buy think hunk of junk.

I bought a LT1050 Cub Cadet in 2004 and it was the best mower I ever owned. It was getting some age on it and I decided to buy in 2012 a LTX1050. This newer one is the worst mower I have ever owned. I am cutting the same yard that I have always cut. So far this year I have spent over $500.00 just to try and keep the thing going. Whoever set up the mower belt design must have been drunk. I will never buy another Cub Cadet. Looks like Snapper is the way to go.

I have 3 Cub Cadet push lawn mowers model # 12ATD2A8713. The blades have fallen off in the middle of mowing yard, very dangerous. Blade has the potential to fly out and hit person pushing mower. I use the mowers for landscaping business. I have had many brands of mowers & never had blades come off. When the blades come off they get bent and chipped. When you try to get hold of Cub Cadet rep. to ask questions they send you on a wild goose chase.

I purchased a Cub Cadet push mower in March of this year (2015) through Home Depot and had it delivered to my home. I had used it less than 10 hours when the seam of the bag ripped. I had used it less than 20 hours (19.5 to be exact - I tracked my hours for the maintenance schedule) when the blade bent. I asked my brother if he could straighten it. He couldn't believe how badly it was bent and said because it was "downward" he didn't know how I could have even done it - nor do I. He said even if he could straighten the blade it was so damaged it would need to be replaced.

Mind you, I've been mowing the same yard x8 years with the mower that I used as a teen (it's about 35 years old - Hardware Hank brand - my dad's favorite :) ) and never replaced the blade... the exact same yard! When I called customer service they said I must have damaged the bag by mowing up "a twig". A twig? Does a twig really cause that kind of damage??? As for the blade she told me I must have mowed over something I shouldn't have. The warranty for those items are 30 DAYS after purchase. I have a new blade on the way and this mower will be the last Cub Cadet product I ever purchase.

Bought a new zero turn walk behind with electric start 500 EZ, I have about 3 months when the housing that holds the wheels came off the mower nose, dived and I went ass over tea kettle. Good thing, I didn't cut my hand off. After many back and forths with Cub Cadet and Home Depot no one wanted let me return the piece of junk till I brought to a approved shop, so I drove to the shop with the mower. The repair guy couldn't have been nicer to my issue. After looking at the mower he told me the reason it came off is they forgot to put in 5 other screws. They were never there so he's ordering me a new housing and attaching it the right and he was also going to check out why the bag doesn't fill. Well if this improves the situation I will come back to update my progress.

UPDATED ON 09/25/2015: After many call to Cub Cadet customer service many times with no help I just did what they asked me to do which was to bring the mower to their repair guy. First the people at proctor supply were great. What he found is Cub Cadet did not assemble the mower properly. First there was supposed to be 8 screws holding on the front end, there were only 3. So he put 8 new screws and Cub Cadet supplied a new front end and my complaint about the bag not filling is they ship these mowers with mulching blades - not pick up blades. So if I want to use the bag I have to change the blade & that's not happening, so I'm going to finish out the season and buy a rider and sell the Cub.

159cc Cub Cadet OHV SC 500 Z lawn mower. Basically it will not run. I purchased it brand new. I used it 3 times. It is cutting less than 1/8 acre. And it would not start, I called Cadet service department. They said to take it to an approved repair shop. So I took it to the only approved shop in Decatur that is approved and they said the carburetor needed to be rebuilt. (The mower is 27 days old. 6 weeks later I finally get it back after I had to pay another $60.00. Cub Cadet would not pay for the repair.) I have now used it another two times and now again the carburetor needs to be replaced. The company refuses to replace the lawn mower or fix it.

I am out $500 and it will cost another $127.00 to repair the lawn mower again. I will at later date add the receipt. I purchased the lawn mower from Tractor Supply Company on Hartselle. Do not buy Cub Cadet, they do not stand behind their products and their customer service is horrible. I really want to support US companies but this company does not stand behind its products and will not support its customers.

UPDATED ON 08/01/2015: Finally the Tractor Supply Company took the mower back and refunded my money. They plan to send the mower back to the company. I hope Cub Cadet will not stiff one of their retailers.

Cub Cadet series 1000 LT1024, broken frame holding the rear axle! I've had this Cub for about 2 1/2 3 years. I only do my own lawn which is large but not HUGE. One day mowing I felt a BANG - got off, looked around, didn't notice anything right away.. But it away and noticed it was leaning to the right side A LOT. After looking I noticed where the frame bolts to the rear axle had broken and FELL right on top of the axle itself!!! Then looked at the other side and noticed it also was RUSTING only after 2-3 year and it's kept in a garage!!

So I "Macgyvered" the right side cause I don't own a welder or a trailer to bring it to get fix the right way... So I then started taking EXTRA easy using it and YEP 3 MOWS later the left side CRACKED AND BROKE. Not sure who the hell designed the frames and how they're mounted to things but they SHOULD BE FIRED!!! The frame where it connects to the rear axle is ONLY about an inch or less wide - no TRUE strength to it at all and after only 2-3 years of being use it's a LOT RIDICULOUS that I have a newer mower and already have these issues with it!!!

I have owned a 45" Cub Cadet for almost three years and in this short time with less than 75 operating hours I have had both spindles replaced and all three pulleys replaced twice. It is actually in the shop again for the same problems. I bought the mower to cut grass not to have to hire lawn maintenance to cut it while the Cub Cadet is being repaired. I was told it could be up to two weeks to repair, living in Florida this time of year we cut grass about every 5 or 6 days. Hiring a maintenance person to cut the grass will cost another $100.00 to $150.00 by the time I get it back. I was just wanting to see if a lemon law could be used to get this machine replaced?

Cub Cadet LTX 1050KW - This is my second review. My first was on 8/8/2013. Now it has been two years since my first review. With that being said I have replaced the deck belt 8x. The front tires are the same and go flat with every use. The front end of the tractor has fallen apart 2x. This is clearly a poorly designed piece of equipment. The deck belt is 162 inches long and goes around 6 pulleys on and angle to the PTO clutch. I can't really see how this can last. The front end fell apart so if you have one of these tighten all bolts on the front end. Contacted the dealer on the front end as they were of no use on the belt problem in 2013. They kind of laughed and asked me who prepped the tractor. I replied "you did". Will be buying something else next year and pitching this one in the trash.

Bought the Cub Cadet 1050 from Lowe's and it worked great for one season. Problem is that locally nobody is willing to service them and the dealer quoted $860 to fix the carburetor. That is more than half of what was spent on it less than two years prior and then Sat idle for a third. Pretty much died right when the warranty was finished. Never ever again will I buy anything of that brand. It looks nice but that about the only thing it's good for; a lawn ornament. Was not planning on having a lemon so did not keep receipt.

I purchased a new Cub Cadet riding mower last June and began to have small problems soon after. Difficulty starting, low or flat tires, and the belt coming off the deck and then breaking. I didn't return it right away because I don't have a vehicle to return it with. This summer, the mower would not start at the beginning of the season. I had the battery checked and was told it was still good. My brother tinkered with the wiring and it started. The belt came off again the first time I was able to mow. I mowed two times before it again would not start. I borrowed a trailer and returned it to the dealer giving them info on the problems I have had.

Three weeks later they called for me to pick it up. When I dropped it off, it had 38 hours on it. When I picked it up, it had 52. The service man replaced the battery which it did not need and charged $50.00. They did not address the belt problem and when I mowed the first time after the repair, the belt broke again. I will need additional service and do not feel that I am wise to return to the dealership. Help me please.

I bought this RZT 42 Cub Cadet mower brand new and within 15 hours of mowing it had been returned to the dealer 2 times for the same problem. After mowing with it for about 30 to 45 minutes the mower would not turn to the right, the right side motor would only make a loud moaning noise forward or backwards. I was told by the dealer the 1st time they had replaced the right side drive motor and within a few more hours of mowing the problem was still there. I took it back two more times. The dealer changed the drive motor fluid and still NEVER fixed the issue.

I was told by the dealer that when the mower done this I could shut it off and take a break and let the mower cool down then mow until it done it again and then take another break. I paid $3000 for this mower. Now it is no longer under warranty and the problem is worse now than ever before. Sometimes when you start to mow it does just fine, takes right off but more times than that the right side drive motor just makes a whining sound when trying to move forward or reverse.

Purchased a Cub Cadet RZT S42 from the Ft. Belvior military exchange store to save on taxes, found out this would be a big mistake but not as big as wanting to buy American and choosing Cub Cadet. The first day I used the mower I had just hit one hr. It started making a grinding noise and would only spin. The right back wheel would not move. Tried several times to get it to move. Finally waited for it to cool down and looked underneath it and there was a metal rod hanging down from the right brake.

Called local cub cadet service centers both less than 10 miles away, was told they do not do warranty work on mowers not purchased from them but would work on it for $85hr. Called Cub Cadet customer service who told me that was correct. I needed to find another authorized repair shop with the first one being 40 miles away. It's their product, their 3yr/120hr warranty makes no sense to me plus I purchased an additional 2 year warranty. If they are paying for the warranty work to be done how is it that the independent dealer makes no money?

I called Cub Cadet back and spoke with a level 2 Rep. who said he would authorize the mower to be towed at their expense and gave me a reference # but if it was not a defect on their part but on whoever put it together then I would be responsible for the tow. I purchased the mower fully assembled. I found no authorized repair shop that would travel 40-60+ miles to pick it up and return it in the Washington DC and outer areas. The guy at the two local independent dealers (same owner) said that he guessed I didn't save any money and maybe I should return mine and buy one there.

I did return mine, but I will not ever buy another Cub Cadet and I have spoken with several of the exchange managers about why deal with a company that has such poor customer service and if they sell their product through the military exchange or even Home Depot they should be willing to stand behind their saying that Cub Cadet represents American Ingenuity at its Best, and the Industry's Strongest Warranty. I now will be looking at a different brand.

I purchased a Cub Cadet 1042 around four years ago. It has a 19 hp Kohler Courage engine. The engine seems to be the only thing about the mower that is any good whatsoever. That is, when you can get around all the wiring problems long enough to get it to start. The spindles on the mower deck, as well as all of the belts have been replaced more times than I can even remember. The starter has been replaced 3 times, and the solenoid once. And now I seem to have some sort of problem with it blowing the 25 amp inline fuse when you try to start it.

And to cap all that off, I'm pretty sure the transmission is on its way out. Prior to this mower I had a John Deere that was purchased new in the late 1980's. Maybe they were made better back then, I don't know, but with regular maintenance and a few minor issues along the way, it lasted almost 18 years. I say that only to let everyone know that I take care of my equipment. But this Cub Cadet mower has been the worst piece of junk I've ever owned. We purchased our Cub Cadet riding mower several years ago and our experiences have been EXTREMELY negative. Everyone told us not to buy a mower from a big box store (Home Depot, Lowe's, Tractor Supply, etc), so we bought it from an authorized dealer - Hollinger's Sports and Turf in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. Very early after our purchase we started having problems with the mower deck. Specifically the deck could not be adjusted to cut at a high level, but it would only cut at a low level which means we were tearing up our lawn every time we went up a hill or made a turn. Also, the deck would not stay level. The front of the deck was constantly lower than the back.

We've had it to our dealer - Hollinger's Sports and Turf - several times, of course costing hundred of dollars each time. I think they have finally come to the conclusion that they can't fix it. My suggestion for anyone buying a riding mower is simple. DO NOT buy a Cub Cadet! We have been very unhappy about our Cub Cadet and dissatisfied with the dealership where we bought the mower.

Cub Cadet paid repair, two deck belts had to be replaced within the first 18 months. After four years (220 running hours) transmission had to be replaced cost me 500.00. Purchased from Cub Cadet. They told me the machine was only warrantied for 120hrs.??? Really that's sixty cuts, wtf? That translates to two seasons of mowing, without a bagger, and that's its only job.

Now, two months after replacing the trans the Kohler 26 Courage engine is screwed up. NOT HAPPY, I could have hired a landscaper for what this garbage is putting me thru. When the machine works it does cut great, but it's not reliable especially for the money. When you contact Cub Cadets customer service they are not friendly to say the least, basically give you the "hey ya spend ya money ya take ya chances." NEVER AGAIN...... GARBAGE!!!!!

My husband normally mows, but he has been out of town. He is very mechanically inclined and walked me through removing the cover and removing the solenoid bolt. (Over the phone haha) This HAS to be done EVERY time or it won't start. Was almost done mowing when it sounded like I hit a huge stump (there was nothing under the mower). I checked it out and a pulley has broken off! So it now looks like more OJT for me. I will never buy another one of these. Ever. I agree with other reviews, there needs to be a recall.

Bought my Cub Cadet LTX-1040 in 2011. About 2 months later front left axle assembly fell off, out of the axle pivot bar, as I turned while driving over a high spot in my yard. The left front tire lost contact with the ground. That's when the axle assembly simply slide out of the axle pivot bar by gravity. Then axle assembly and big steel wheel fell over on the ground in the path of the deck, which was also elevated slightly. Result: the blades plowed into wheel/axle assembly, tractor stopped, and everything was torn up... tire, wheel, assembly joint, blades, spindle... etc, etc. Despite possibility that Cub Cadet would refuse warranty coverage because I drove over a little hill like that, they paid for full restoration under the warranty. (The axle assembly had not been securely attached.)

Compared to some of the other reviews my mower is a very good Cub Cadet. However seems the deck has to be adjusted every year. It is very hard to start in cold weather, has had to have 2 pulleys replaced, one several years back under warranty, one just recently. One of the front tires has worn uneven due to the camber being too far out, I know of no way to adjust it. The valve cover has started leaking and must be replaced this year, has always used oil even when it wasn't leaking it. We have had it for five years, we take care of a large property. So we also have a 10 year old John Deere. It has needed little more than regular maintenance - a new seat recently and maybe one set of blades. I think the Cub really could be better.

After the linkage was fixed, the mower would run rough and die. I had noticed that the gas cap kept vibrating off and I reported this to the repair shop. After taking the mower to the authorized repair shop for the second time because it wouldn't run, they discovered that the gas cap did in fact vibrate off when in use and the gas tank was filled with grass that are blown in because of the cap coming off. Cub Cadet refused to pay any of the bills, saying the gas cap isn't under warranty. Right now the mower is only ten months old and now the 0-turn is no longer working. My wife owns a house on about three acres 200km SW of our home, and she is a fanatic about keeping the lawn looking nice. Believe me, in that part of the South, a golf course green can become a jungle in about three weeks. Her old mower is a 15 year old Craftsman that's just about used up, but I brought it back here. After replacing the starter solenoid ($18 locally, very simple repair), it still runs like a champ, even if the deck tends to get out of level pretty often.

The LTX1050 was sold somewhere in East Tennessee, and she bought it new. My peremptory examination and test drive revealed nothing to queer the deal for me, so we took it down to her place. Almost immediately it wouldn't keep the blade drive belt in action for a complete cutting. The farm equipment company in that town sells commercial grade stuff, but are certified to repair Cub Cadet's stuff.

I think last summer required only two belt replacements, but there were numerous throw-offs. This season I didn't get ten minutes' use until the belt was off, and that was early in April. Since then the tractor has been in the shop once for two weeks, and the mechanic regularly has to drive the 15km round trip to her place to put the belt back on. The company doesn't even try to charge for the service anymore. I think the piece had 28 hours on it when she bought it. It's probably not higher than 40 hours now. I predict she'll be trekking to the nearest Sears before much longer.

Every time I ran to Home Depot and got a replacement belt based on the owner's manual and even checking the Cub Cadet website using the model and serial number of my tractor and it was always too long.

Today after making two trips to Home Depot to get yet another replacement belt I started measuring the deck to figure out why the belt (954-04219) was always extending a good 6 inches beyond the PTO pulley. As far as I can tell from measuring the deck it is a 42" deck with a 46" deck sticker. I plan on contacting Cub Cadet but I don't hold much hope that anything can be done. While the tractor has never given us any trouble and it mows great when it isn't throwing belts, I would strongly suggest that if you look to buy one that you make sure that you are getting the parts that you should be getting.

I TOLD THEM that my wife and I spent 6 hours picking up tree limbs, stems, and raking leaves and acorns BEFORE CUTTING the yard. I was told that did not matter. Same thing happened again, only this time the right side fell off. That repair lasted about 2 cuttings, and it locked up and failed again. The hour meter jumped about 25 hrs every time I turned the key, so it registers far more hours than it actually has. The dealer replaced it, and it too failed.

I sold my old Craftsman 42" tractor with the Honda v-twin engine and was in much better shape than this new Cub Cadet. I am sorely disappointed. I was buying a tractor for retirement, and was hoping it would be my last one. I had always heard good things about Cub Cadet. Like others, I am capable of performing minor tasks, even though the mower has to be lifted and takes time for me to work on it, when I would prefer to be mowing, but for the dealer to come and get it, requires me to pay $50 for the trip. Will be my last Cub Cadet and very sorry I purchased this one. This nest must have caught fire causing a malfunction in the fuel system which then feed gas to the fire. How many birds would build a nest 8 off the ground in a piece of equipment that is used every week? It was also mentioned that I could prove otherwise, so their best guess is a new mower is less than a lawyer (great company policy). Whatever happened to helping a customer in a weird circumstance?

When purchasing the unit I purchased the extended warranty thinking I would be protected if something went wrong. After numerous problems with the unit and given the runaround by the service center nothing can be further from the truth. As soon as I got the unit home, started having trouble starting. Service center picked it up and found out the flywheel was oblonged. Replaced that, put new blades on, replaced hour meter, used it.

Next spindle broke on the mower deck and broke the belt. Service center gave me a hard time for replacing the belt, put new blades on, and used it. Next spindle broke on the deck again. Service center gave me the runaround for about 3 weeks. Finally came up with Cub Cadet would replace the deck but because I had the extended warranty they would not repair it. Then they came up with they would give me the parts if I would pay the labor of approx. $800. So now I have a broken unit for which I paid for an extended warranty that is good until 4-2015. So beware of Tractor Supply, Cub Cadet products and their warranty.

I purchased a Cub Cadet tractor 8 yrs ago that had a mower deck & hydraulic bucket. This was a BIG purchase at $16k so we did our homework and bought what we thought was a top of the line product from a reputable company. Unfortunately, this is NOT the case. The tractor broke down with minor & major issues from the 1st year we owned it. The repairs were so frequent that the store we bought it from said they could no longer service it and that Cub Cadet had pulled all of the tractor inventory off the market & shipped it overseas.

We found another Cub Cadet authorized repair shop & continued to bring the tractor over repeatedly. It actually exploded 2x and could have seriously hurt my children that like to ride along with Dad. The tractor was rebuilt after the 1st episode, which Cub Cadet covered. When it happened a 2x and my husband was hurt, we said "enough is enough" and got angry. The repair shop admitted they dreaded hearing from us & felt truly bad about all the constant bills we received but it was not their fault. The Cub Cadet/MTD corporate headquarters said they would give us $5k to purchase another tractor & take the old tractor back after a long battle. This amount is a joke as we've spent that amount in repairs, never mind the $16k we paid for it.

Well it's now been 7 months since we agreed to accept the $5k payout. Every time we call, Cub Cadet says their Legal Department is processing it. The emails all go unanswered & we feel like we've been scammed again. I've paid a landscape company for an entire summer while we 'negotiated' with Cub Cadet & settled for small amount $5k, we went out & bought new equipment that cost us more money then $5k. Skip ahead, it's now 7 months later & I'm still waiting for my $5k! I've been carrying the cost on my credit card while waiting to get reimbursed. No response to emails & when CC answers the phone, they claim it's with their Legal Dept. Horrible product, warranty & service!! Stay away!

Unfortunately there are 2 types of Cub Cadet's one you get at a big box store (Lowes, T.S.C., etc) VS one you get at a tractor dealership. The one that you get at an independent Cub Cadet Dealership is a much different quality as long as you buy a Cub Cadet and not a MTD big box store unit. No belt issues, no issues at all, and if you happen to have something go wrong Cub Cadet stands behind their product and the Dealership. If you are hesitant please do yourself a favor and look at the tractors that the large chains sell then go to a Cub dealer and look at the difference. You will be surprised. I have had many Cub Tractors. I do extensive research before I buy anything and I can say without any doubt that if you go to a Cub dealer and ask them if it is a true Cub Cadet you will be 100% satisfied with your new tractor.

I have spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on new belts and other parts for the deck and still it does not work without stretching out and throwing off the belt. Brought it to the closest certified Cub Cadet shop for them to take a look at it and I did not even have to take it off the trailer before the gentleman told me about my problem I was having in great detail. It seems that all the models with the 50" deck have the same problem.

He admitted that Cub Cadet knows about this design flaw and intends to do nothing about it. He also stated that soon he will no longer sell or service Cub Cadets because of this, along with other issues with the product line and the lack of any responsibility that Cub Cadet will take for their poor products. I called Cub Cadet's customer service to confirm all of this and I see what the guy at the shop is talking about. Even though you can go and read all the complaints on the internet about this deck, the certified dealer stating it is a design flaw with all the 50" decks, the people at Cub Cadet will not back their products up. After thousands of dollars in initial cost and repair cost, I have a piece of junk. I am going to bring my Cub Cadet to the junk yard where it belongs and never buy another one of their products again. Fool me twice, shame on me!

Cub Cadet 3x 26". My husband and I purchased a Cub Cadet 3x 26" Snowblower in Early Winter of 2013. Due to lack of snow, we used it about 4 times during the 2013-2014 season. On the first snowfall of this season, January 3, 2015 (just over a year later), we tried to turn it on. No luck. So when we pulled the choke handle, the rope broke. It was frayed. And we had only ever pulled it 3 times before as it usually had started with electricity.

Called Home Depot because it is under warranty. Were told to bring it into the store (does not fit in a car) so they could send it to Illinois where it would be 4-6 weeks before we would get it back. By that time, we won't need it. We would not know if it qualified as being under warranty until they looked at it. I suggested the frayed cord was an indication of poor choice of cheap materials, it is cotton. I was told that something could have gotten stuck on it in the gear box. No it is just cheap. Nothing was stuck. Being do-it-yourselfers, and having a mechanic son, we took the snow blower apart and fixed it ourselves. Here is what we found:

THERE IS NO SHUTOFF VALVE for the gas line. That means that it is very difficult to empty that tank at the end of the season. And since everyone living around the Great Lakes is forced to use Ethanol gasoline, crud builds up in the carburetor if any remains. So we cleaned the carburetor AND we put in a shutoff valve. We bought much higher tensile strength rope - It would have cost Cub Cadet about $1 more per machine. A shut off valve would not have cost much to include - and should have been included given the cost of the snow blower.

Home Depot - you need to look more closely at the products you sell your customers. Cub Cadet you need better product designers who don't forget essential parts (shut off valves) and specify appropriate materials. And you should pay us for figuring out problems with your product and making recommendations for improvement.

Buy one built before 1982 after that they are made by MTD and most are junk, just my own opinion. I still own 4 of them older than 1982 and use them all the time.

When I bought it the battery was dead but the service manual said not to bring it back because the battery just needed a deep charge. Well I messed with it until I went and bought a new battery and everything was fine. The second year the mower just quit moving. I took it to a service center who told me it wasn't covered under warranty and I had to pay if I wanted it fixed. I paid then complained to Cub Cadet who refunded my money. The next year the seat bracket broke and I almost fell off. I could have been hurt. I ordered two new brackets because I knew it would happen again.

Now the fourth year the transmission went. I called Cub Cadet and was told if I took it back to the service center who tried to cheat me earlier that they MIGHT do something to help me but they also might not. My Mower has 59.8 hours on it and is four years old! My friend's mower lasted three years, until the warranty expired, and has been nothing but trouble since. He gave up on it after spending a year paying for repairs that just kept coming back, and bought a new mower which seems to me is my only choice. I found out that Cub Cadet was bought out by MTD in the early 80's and in the mid 90's they changed the mowers to lower quality and started selling them at Home Depot. I bought this mower thinking it was a good investment from a name brand company. Boy was I wrong. I got through the first several mowings of my yard (about 1 acre) & then the problems started... Deck belt came off, then the weld on the deck wheel bracket broke off & naturally Home Depot (where it was purchased at $2,999.00) wanted NOTHING to do with getting it repaired. The warranty was out. My yard is relatively smooth with the front being on an incline of about 5 to 25 degrees. I had an old (25 year old) Craftsman mower that I bought used & used it for about 5 years & the motor eventually let go & I NEVER changed a belt or had any problems other than battery or fuel issues (normal wear & tear).

Cub Cadet is the single biggest mistake I've made in lawn care equipment in my life. The problems continued... New blade belt lasted 2 mowings & came off again. The pulleys had loosened the deck where they were bolted had cracked at the bolt holes causing the belts to ride at an angle, cutting them & throwing them off the pulleys. I took the mower to the repair shop & 500.00 dollars later got it back all welded & straightened (wheel bracket too). The belts run about 50 bucks each so my investment is now $3,650.00 & we're not done yet.

The next time I used the mower, it didn't want to pull up the incline on my yard. I'd noticed it kind of bogging down a little over time but didn't think too much about it... I checked it over - transmission fluid ok - drive belt... loose & not engaging very well, so new DRIVE belt (another 50 bucks... now it's $3,700.00). I put on the belts myself to save $50.00 each time for labor. That was last year... This year started out with a bad battery (no big deal - I guess the trickle charger didn't do its job), installed new battery, turned the key & starter spins like crazy but not the flywheel???? I checked it out & it has a plastic (yes, plastic) pinion gear on top of the starter that is .... JUNK!!!! & does Cub Cadet retailers offer this part??? Sure in a rebuild kit for 65.00 bucks... a plastic gear for 65 dollars... Insane!!!

Getting the starter off was a chore, getting it back on even worse. It's all together - started it up & started mowing and noticed the grass (level) looked weird... almost like stair steps??? Started checking pulleys & guess what... another part of the deck cracked & the pulley & blade were riding crooked... The list goes on but I'm stopping here... I never intend to willingly purchase another MTD product as long as I live & will pass my knowledge on to my Children, Grandchildren & all the people I come in contact with in my building/contracting business.

I bought the LTX 1040 Cub Cadet at Home Depot, 2010, after using a Sears riding mower for 13 years with little to no problems. Upon my second mowing (my yard is rough and not very level), I hit a rock, knocking out the timing. Almost every mowing required timing fix, i. e., removing the deck, fighting the spring, getting the blades in time, replacing the deck. I was a mechanic for over 25 years with an aircraft A&P license. I am now 66 and it just ain't as easy to work on things. I gave the mower to my daughter who has a relatively smooth yard and she is having not only deck timing jumps but belt problems. The belt guide, PN 747-05055, broke and seems as though it was a round rod stock, smashed in the middle and a bolt hole drilled in. Not only does it jump time, but throws off the belt. I replaced 2 sets of blades, one belt myself. She has used the mower about 4 times with 2 timing issues and the belt will not stay on. She does not have the on hand cash to continually repair due to 3 young boys - so, I'm helping and still doing the labor. Obviously by the previous comments, this is an ongoing problem and the best fix is a new lawn mower. I did get an Ariens and have had no problems even on the rough ground and ditches.

With all these complaints for this mower, there should be a recall and it should be replaced with a better design. As of now, I will not buy another Cub Cadet... Customer service needs to take full attention on these complaints and work on the design.

After reading other reviews by other owners of the Cub Cadet LTX 1050, I feel fortunate. I bought my cub cadet LTX 1050 in May 2013. My issues are with the deck belt and pulleys. I have 3 acres of lawn to mow and after about 13 months of use, I have replaced the belt 5 times and replaced the same pulley twice. The good news is that I am getting very proficient in removing the deck and replacing the belt. There is a flaw in the design of this mower and cub cadet needs to step up.

Might crank for 6 or 7 weeks & then won't do anything. Starter solenoid was replaced. Valves were adjusted. I replaced the battery at my expense. Worked for a while and now it won't so much as even turn the motor over. Don't waste your money on a Cub LTX 1040. You may as well just buy a Murray & be done with it.

I have a CC42 RTZ mower that is 7 years old. I have had the muffler fall off twice while moving (I have read that this is a common problem with the CC RTZ mowers). The first time it happened, I looked at it and did not see a way to reattach it. The way the muffler is made at the factory, once the fasteners break off, there is no way to simply reattach it. I had a new one installed at my local mower repair shop for about $150.

Recently, that muffler fell off (they seem to last about 3 yrs) and I was determined to figure a way to get the muffler back on without paying the exorbitant repair cost. My solution was to weld a nut to each of the four bolt holes on the muffler. Then, put it up against the holding bracket, and simply screw bolts (w/ lock washers) into each of the nuts. In my case, a friend did the welding for nothing, but the cost would be minimal compared to having a new muffler installed. Note: If the nuts are not perfectly centered when welded on, simply drill out the holes in the bracket to be a little larger and you will have the fudge factor that you need to get the bolts to align to the welded on nuts.

Cub Cadet RZT S 54 - Not real happy with this equipment. Would not buy one again. For a company that has been building lawn equipment for years, you think they'd have learned something. I clean the machine each time I use it. It has 14 hours on it and there is NO paint left under the deck. Those cleaning ports where you hook up a garden hose to clean under the deck? Utterly useless. All you end up with is wet gloppy cooked spinach. No grease fittings on the spindles, either. I always like to maintain my equipment. The guards on the spindles trap grass underneath as well. There are numerous "grass traps" that try to prevent you from cleaning the deck. The floor of the mower does not have sufficient drain holes, either. The "safety devices" are another turnoff for me. The kill switch in the seat shuts off the PTO if you move even slightly. You cannot reverse without shutting down the PTO. Not everyone is a moron. Even Craftsman has a switch position to allow you to reverse without killing the PTO. Unless the throttle is in "choke" position, the engine will not start.

This spring we had to replace our Cub Cadet that we had for 5 years due to it being damaged in our shed collapsing this past winter. Our old Cub was not a zero turn, but we decided to go with a zero due to our large lawn. We purchased it from the same dealer we bought our first Cub from. A couple days after we had it my husband went out to fire it up and now our lawn. About a half hour later I seen my husband outside with cover to the engine area taken off. He said it had started making a noise so he was going to take a look, but then decided best to just contact the dealer we bought it from.

When he went to move it off the drive and go call the dealer the lawn mower would not start. When we contacted the dealer they made us bring it back and then said they would look at fixing it. Well finally they said they did not know what was wrong with it and gave us a new one but we had to take the deck that was on the one that broke. And then told us to come and get the new one. We said "no, you bring us the new one." They did. I think they should have brought us a new one with a new deck and picked up the broken one. It wasn't our fault a brand new Cub Cadet didn't work and we should not have been inconvenienced. This is a reflection of the dealer and Cub Cadet and customer service.

First, the motor won't stop running unless you choke it and then sometimes it blows fire out of exhaust upon shut down. Have caught grass on fire once then the deck bearings that you can't grease blowed up and the belt flew out of mower while running at top speed and the double pulley hit the wall and bounced back and hit the house. Luckily no one was standing close. These machines are not built as strong as the original Cub Cadet line. They are an accident waiting to happen. Will probably buy John Deer next time. Bought it brand new from Home Depot spring of 2013. Only used about six times last year, due to the rainy summer. Got it out of the shed where it is kept when not in use this spring. Ran it one time around the lawn, belt broke.... Paid for new belt, replaced it, continued to mow, when suddenly smoke came billowing out of the front of the tractor... I might add, this machine has been taken care of like a baby, cleaned after each use last year, cleaned and all things checked before use, oil, tires, gas... I honestly thought the tractor was on fire. I turned the ignition off and smoke was billowing out. I had my son help me push it to an area behind our home and away from our daughter's home. I was scared it was going to blow up...

After a while, when it cooled down, we waited till my husband got home from work. He started it up and drove it back to the shed area. By the time he got it there, it was smoking again from the front. He immediately turned it off, let it cool down and lifted the hood off, checking to see if there were any burn marks. We bought it from Home Depot, paid cash for it and it is still under warranty for engine and parts repair... Finally after nagging my husband to go back to Home Depot and demand service - we paid with good money, we expected what we paid for - they made an appt with a lawn repair place in Gadsden. They came and picked it up and said it would be seven to ten days till we got it back, but they would try and have it back by the 4th of July.

We got it back the 3rd. I drove it one time just up the front lawn, and it started smoking again. I knew they were still in the area, called them again. They said to run it again for an hour, if it still smoked call them back, but they thought a drop of oil got on the muffler when they fixed the gasket, and it should work okay. They also told me we should consider renewing the warranty on it... After only one use, it again started billowing smoke. Has been at the same Gadsden repair shop for ten days. They called my husband yesterday, said it was going to be delivered back to us that day sometime in the late afternoon. Around 4:45, they called to say that even though they had replaced the gasket, they were going to take it back to the shop, and fix the valve, but they would have to order it...

So evidently the "new gasket" was leaking oil and they saw that, took it back to the shop, and now we are in limbo. It will soon be two weeks since we have had our mower. Home Depot won't even consider giving us a replacement lawn mower and these people at the shop seem to know there are major problems with the Cub Cadet mowers and Home Depot... why can't somebody help the honest consumer, and give us our money back or replace the tractor altogether, and not another Cub Cadet???

SLTX 1054 - As mentioned in many other post, it's a belt issue, not to mention that I later found out the engine had already been taken apart and it was only a few months old. My brother bought this mower at Lowe's, (reconditioned)? I helped him load it and take it home. Two weeks later I called him to see how the mower was doing. He said the belt won't stay on for longer than 10 minutes. I went over to see what the problem was. Upon taking the deck off and looking at the belt routing, it's an obvious design issue. There is no way a belt will ever stay on this type of mower when the drive pulley is 2.5 inches higher than the deck pulleys. The idler pulley cannot compensate for this much difference, no matter how tight you tension the belt. The answer is to weld another pulley to the bottom of the drive pulley (same size) and run the belt on the new pulley. This makes all pulleys run at the same height. You will never lose another belt and it extends belt life too. Email me Cub Cadet. There is no reason all of these people have to go through this issue for years and years.

I agreed and looked at the Ariens rider for the same price, but I could see another bunch of trouble. I left with a replacement LTX 1040 figuring that I wouldn't get two bad ones in a row.

The replacement is smoking at start up and making a click/clunk noise when I put in gear, so I guess I was wrong on two bad mowers in a row. I'm sure something is going to happen to the transmission/shifter, but I'm not sure just what. The Kohler Courage engines are junk from what I've been reading and from my own experience.

I say unless you live in Maine or a state where there is a implied warranty law, I'd stay away from Cub Cadet, but I'm going to return this second Cub Cadet and give up on Cub Cadet anyway. Cub RZT S50 - I would not recommend this product. If you can't help yourself, get the one without the steering wheel that just has the lap bars. What I mean by that is with the steering wheel, there is an amazing amount of clockwork of gears and linkage just under where the drivers feet are. Those gears and a linkage are responsible for keeping the steering wheel, the pedals and the right and left transmission all in sync with each other. If they become out of adjustment, it will not drive right.

My problems. First I had to take the deck pulley guards off because there is no way to clean the grass out of them. At around 6 hours of use, I noticed when I went to turn around at the end of a run, the steering wheel locked up and would only release when I let completely off the forward pedal. This problem got worse and was unable to continue mowing. It was the weekend and I was already behind. I was forced to investigate the problem myself, risking voiding the warranty. I found that one of the linkage brackets was all bent up. I had to hammer it back into shape and reassemble it. I finished the lawn with no additional problems. That problem never returned.

Somewhere between 6 and 10 hours of use, a stick went above the deck and pushed the transmission cooling fan blades up into the drive belt and tore the fan blades off. I replaced that as well. This happened again at around 13 hours of use. At about 12 hours of use, I noticed that it didn't seem to go as fast and it hesitated when I went to turn around at the end of a run. It was giving all the signs of the linkage were becoming out of adjustment according to a service manual I had downloaded for this mower. During the last mowing, I notice this linkage issue and had broken another trans fan. I decided that it's time for warranty work and a trade in. This was not the mower for me.

Warranty work. Had to take it to Big R in Warsaw, IN for the warranty work, because like a dumb A, I bought it there. DON'T DO THAT. I waited 7 weeks and 2 days to get the fan replaced and the linkage fixed. I also noticed that he had 49.1 hours listed on the bill. Which was zero dollars. I fixed the first fan in about 2 hours, so he spent 47 hours working on the linkage???? When I took it in to get it service, I had exactly 14.3 hours on the tractor hour meter. When I got it back, it had 50 hours. Low hours were going to be my selling point when I went to sell it. Now I ordered a new hour meter and sticker for $80. Because you can't reset them. I have to let the meter run until it reaches 14.3 again. I'm not out to misrepresent anything.

One other important note about Cub Cadet as a whole. When I went to pick the mower up after 65 days of warranty work, Big R service in the back of the store had a sign up that said: "Currently only accepting warranty service work." I looked back there and 6 of the 7 mowers appeared to be newer. They were all in for warranty work. HMMMM Never buy a Cub again. And anything that has an engine on it from Big R. Warranty type work 3 times before and at 14.3 total hours on the mower.

This last one I had cut my yard only 3 times after putting it on and the fly wheel on top of the spindle came completely off. At $65 dollars a piece this is getting expensive. Will never buy another Cub again, going back to Deere or buying something else.

My company was in need of a commercial quality walk behind mower due to the amount of grassy area around our production facility and the terrain. The 33" walk behind mower from Cub Cadet seemed like a logical choice and my impression was that the brand had quality associated with it. They were also advertising a special low interest financing offer as well.

The experience has turned out to be a bad one and I hope this review will help others think twice before deciding to purchase Cub Cadet products. First, the 'catch' in their financing agreement. Ordered the unit and then after three weeks when it arrived at their dealer, I was informed that the special financing had to be applied for requiring another three week delay. I ended up putting it on the credit card. Next, within weeks of putting the 33" wide walk behind into service, two faults. The battery charging system or battery itself were bad. The lever for engaging the unit into gear striped out of its attachment mount.

Finally, here we are in mid-May at the peak of the grass growing season and we've been without the unit for nearly three weeks while the service department waits for an 'out-of-stock' part from Cub Cadet. I would not recommend Cub Cadet.

I spent over $6,000 on this mower. If I could do it all over I wouldn't buy it. What is worse than the mower is Cub Cadet's customer service. The higher up the ladder you go, the ruder and more unconcerned with your issue they get. I highly advise anyone to steer clear of any Cub Cadet.

Turning radius is too tight. Cuts into grass and leaves black tire marks on concrete driveway. Installed steering turn travel blocks on each spindle. Seat springs too stiff, went to lawnmower junkyard. Bought softer springs for $5. Seat switch too sensitive, you cannot even lean over to check how close you are cutting with disengaging the PTO blade and kills the engine. Modified seat switch. Deck discharge chute too long, trimmed 2" off so parking in tight places are easier. Installed factory sun shield and armrests. Great KW motor. Glad I bought it. I was a Tech Writer for Int. Harvester in 1966 and did the parts and operators manual at the Research and Development Center in Hinsdale, Ill. I would not recommend making any modifications to your new mower unless you have a background in electromechanical devices and have a shop to fabricate and modify the above. First Cub in 67 years. Worst mistake I ever made. Bought a cub cadet riding lawn mower-1050 model 23hp. Never seen such junk in my life. Kept feeling vibration and noise at deck - would get louder and louder. Only at 52 hrs. Of course the warranty was for 50 hrs. Now I have a new riding lawn mower to work on - thinking I bought a new one so I wouldn’t have to do that. That was a joke from cub cadet. Removed the deck, looked at brake bearings, not one but all three blade bearings had failed.

I called cub cadet. Not only were they uncaring and rude, they said there was nothing they could warranty because it was over 50 hrs. Should have known. I asked him if they had problems with those bearings. He lied and said no. I ask him who they used for repair shop - I contacted them and talked with them of concern and they were honest, said cub cadet was well aware that the mandrels/bearing had grease zerks on housing but the bearings inside were seals and the bearing could not be greased properly. So now I had to buy all three mandrels 119.00 each X 3. Wasted another week end replacing them.

Next, 8 hours later, went to mow grass cranks and cranks won’t start - great. I check it out, find that the electrical shut off solenoid at carb failed and shut off fuel - some more work to do. Took off carb, repaired it. Now mowing again - for 2 more hours, went in house to get drink, came back out to finish mowing, now will not crank at all. Checked battery and wires ok. Check starter solenoid failed. Replaced solenoid - working on again. Now cranks and starts. Mowing yard three time, was going to turn, right front wheel tie rod failed, came off. Now can't steer lawn mower.

I see how my Saturday will be spent again working on new lawn mower. Went down to lawn mower parts house. He said the newer cub cadets that home depot sells are junk. I already knew that. Replaced tie rod ends. Now steering working. Has always had a concern with not wanting to crank properly. New battery. Installed a better thicker pos cable at starter to solenoid to battery. Now cranks better. Blades are thin, very bad quality and over prices - I learned to hate this cub cadet.

Whatever you do, do not buy anything with cub cadet written on it. I have tried numerous times to get any kind of help from cub cadet. They are rude and will not do anything for you. They know if they had to properly fix all their junk they would go broke, so the consumer does not matter. I think we should all get together and file a class action lawsuit on all their garden tractor complaints. Please do not buy from cub cadet. Never again. Thanks for the junk and no help of any kind.

This rider is the biggest piece of junk that I have ever owned. I purchase the unit because Cub Cadet used to make very high quality machines. I did check the reviews on Home Depot's website and they were for the most part favorable. Here is a list of items that have broken: Carb leaks fuel and needs be smacked on occasion to stop leak. Motor smokes oil smoke when first starting even though I check the oil and have less than 90 hours on it. Starter will not start the unit with high dollar big battery installed and requires me turning the engine to get it off compression stroke before it will start under its own power.

Deck is rusting even though unit is three years old and has always been garage kept. Axle went out and had to be replaced. Three mower belts have broken. Front steering arm fell off and had to be re-installed. The mower are made by MTD now. If I had known this, I would never have purchased unit. MTD builds low priced junk. There are other items that have broken also, but why bore you. Do not purchase these tractors.

So I used the mower again. The next time this happened I had finished mowing the lawn and allowed the mower to continue to run while I got the hose out to clean the machine. When I returned I saw about a two foot flame coming out which burnt my neighbor's yard. I took a video of this. Remember the dealer said that "Heat is normal." This has occurred seven times now. I am just slightly shifting weight and it cuts out.

I gave him the example that if I would scratch my butt the PTO would shut off. Bill then told me that I should not be scratching my butt when I am mowing and I obviously cannot handle the operation of the machine. I asked if he was serious and told him that it was an example that I gave. Told him again that my butt never leaves the seat. Bill told me that it's obvious that you cannot handle the machine and told me to have a nice day as I was trying to explain to him more about the PTO. So far I am not happy with my little Cub LTX1050, Being a loyal International Harvester and Cub Cadet person, My aunt and I talk about a new mower for the yard at the ranch, so we settled on the 50" cut Cub LTX 1050. Being that our farm tractor dealers are not big on selling lawn and garden equipment, we chose TSC (Tractor Supply) as the most likely place to buy the new Cub. Well, I should have known this was going to be a nightmare when we had a problem with the sales person trying to hook up the trailer we also purchased with the New Cub to a Factory Height 2012 Ram 3500 Dulley. After 45 minutes of hooking the trailer to my truck, I got the New Cub to the ranch.

The first problem we had was within 2 cuttings and 3 1/2 tanks of gas over a 5-acre yard. The blades were shot, not just needing to be sharpened, totally replaced. There were chunks of blades missing, and we had not hit or run over anything. After going to another Cub Cadet dealer over 50 miles away, and $60.00 for three blades, we were up and mowing again. I came in one evening and my aunt told me there was a flood of gas in the carb, and the mower would not go forward or backwards. After several attempts at the release on the back of the mower, it still was locked up. So we called TSC to see about getting the Cub fixed. Well they referred us to the farm tractor dealership that does not like to sell Lawn and Garden Equipment in the first place. TSC told us they had put in a work order and the farm tractor dealer would be calling us the next day.

Two days later we have yet to hear anything from the farm tractor dealer or TSC, I called the farm tractor dealer, knowing that this farm tractor dealer is always in a hurry to get service work when it come to farm tractors, and I spoke to the repairman that works in their small equipment shop. He said he had not heard or seen any ticket on a repair order from Cub Cadet or Tractor Supply on our LTX1050. Well knowing at this point it is time for me to step back and let my aunt speak with TSC, my aunt called TSC and got the runaround. They finally told her to call Cub Cadet. The call to Cub Cadet was not a good one at all. After hours of trying to get through to someone that spoke English, she was given the name and number to another farm tractor dealer that was over 50 miles away, in another state.

After going through a couple of days with this farm tractor dealer, they finally told my aunt, they would come get the mower, but it would be a couple of months before we could get it back, and we would also have to pay pick up and drop off. Well, that would have been okay but we had bought the warranty that covers the cost of pick up and drop off. So finally after another long and heated call with Cub Cadet, they found a small engine shop closer to us and had them come get the mower. After a day in the shop, it was found that there was a bolt that was wrong and the brakes were locked up and the mow deck was not installed correctly. Well the little Cub is back and it runs, still drinks more gas than a man drinks water on a hot summer day, going to get another set of blades again today, and it had not mowed but 1 1/2 times this time.

So our days with Cub Cadet are about done. I hate to see a company that built such great products go to the dogs. So trust me when I say, when it comes to Cub Cadet/MTD, think long and hard before you buy the product, and surely think long and hard before you buy anything of great cost from TSC (Tractor Supply). Prayers and God Speed.

Cub Cadet has been absolutely unprofessional and unreliable. Our business used to use three of their Cub Cadet 18 in. 187cc Rear-Tine Dual-Direction Tiller on a daily basis. We have them professionally maintained on a regular, quarterly basis. So we thought that when we took one of our tillers in to an official Cub Cadet dealer and repair shop, DeWinne, in San Antonio to fix what turned out to be a blown motor, which *is* a clear warranty problem. Jeff at DeWinne on Bandera in San Antonio, the authorized repair man, asked our delivery man if he had put oil in it, and since it wasn't his job, but the job of our *professional* maintenance man, he said no.

Jeff at DeWinne then said that this, FALSE, information voided our warranty and relayed such back to Cub Cadet. Absolutely every effort to correct the information has failed miserably, due to what appears to be one of those lovely good-ole-boy networks, with the horribly sexist customer service of Cub Cadet (Bill by name, no last name, no extension, and apparently no responsible supervisor) attempting to grill our office workers about the workings of a tiller, and speaking to them with disrespect and condensation when they did not know exactly what was going on with the tiller. Jeff at DeWinne was also horribly sexist and condescending towards our office staff.

Jeff at DeWinne now wants more money than we paid for the tiller just for *looking* at our tiller, and is holding our tiller, and the parts he has been paid for, at his shop for ransom. For what, by all rights, is a valid warranty repair. He maliciously and with intent and purpose, decided that he would be greedy and claim that we had voided our warranty. Bill at Cub Cadet has stated in no uncertain terms that they *will not* do anything to rectify the situation, will not accept a return, will not negotiate a rate and will not honor their warranty. He was rude, crude and entirely unacceptable.

Our company now has two tillers, and one being held ransom, that we will not be using anymore and will be buying tillers from people who *aren't* Cub Cadet. And if those tillers need repair, we will be going somewhere that is *not* Jeff at DeWinne.

STAY AWAY FROM CUB CADET/MTD PRODUCTS UNLESS YOU HAVE MONEY TO WASTE!! I bought a brand new LTX 1040 with timed belts and 19HP Kohler engine in 2009 from Tractor Supply in Bedford, Virginia. At hourmeter reading 1.2, it threw the drive belt. TSC said belts not covered. Cost: $24. Started mowing my 1.8 acre lot and at hour 1.6, heard the loud clanging noise that I have learned is very common in this year/model, and discovered the timing belt had jumped time. Cost: $62.00. I'm a retired Navy machinist, so I looked for obvious causes. Nothing seen. So installed blades, and as soon as I finished my VERY first lawncutting and shut the mower off, it started clanging again. What the deuce? Inspected underside of deck & found belt had jumped time AGAIN, destroying the NEW blades I just put on.

So called TSC, got the "blades & belts" not covered speech. Called Cub Cadet, they denied knowledge of a problem with this model. So I pulled the deck (I am a LTX deck yanking master now), thoroughly inspected the deck & belt system. Anyway over next 2 weeks, inspected deck and belt drive system, polished spindle idler pulleys, replaced timing belt, lubed deck, replaced timing belt ($75.00) and 2 more blades ($62.00). Two weeks later, mowing my 5 inch tall grass, it threw the drive belt again, at another $24 cost. It jumped timing belt again at hour 13, destroying the blades again ($62.00). By this time it's 2010, talked to my local Dealer, and discover that Cub Cadet/MTD has redesigned the deck for the 42" lawnmowers and got rid of the timed deck, which leads me to believe they acknowledge a design defect by eliminating the timed deck feature. I keep a spare set of blades, and both drive & timing belt on hand at all times. Oh and I've had 2 flat tires of unknown origin, (can of fix-a-flat remedy) and 2 batteries. I purchased a Cub Cadet LGT 1054 Mower from Tractor Supply. I asked why it was cheaper than a similar model and was advised it was last year's model. It was delivered and a few days later I used it and found it to have several hours but not knowing anything about lawn tractors, with no means to return it and having a lawn badly in need of mowing, I decided to keep it based on reviews of Cub Cadet's reliability. After 10 hours, the tie rod came off from the front right wheel. After only 28 hours, the belt came off. The belt was replaced and continued to come off whenever the PTO was engaged.

I contacted Tractor Supply who said unless I bought the extra maintenance warranty, I would have to pay to have it delivered to the local authorized service center, Slate Creek Outdoor Power in Mineral Wells, WV, who they recommended. I was quoted a price of .69 per mile initially which I felt was fair but had to wait a week for the delivery man to return from vacation. Upon his return, he told me there was a mistake and the price was $315.84 for pickup and delivery for only 28 miles. He also told me that Cub Cadet mowers were notorious for throwing their belts and I should have purchased another brand.

I called Cub Cadet and was told it clearly states in my manual that transportation is not covered. I told the rep that I understood but more importantly wanted to express my displeasure with Cub Cadet and their inferior product. I finally ended up in Customer Service Level III and spoke with Bill who after discussing other options, felt the transportation cost was unreasonable and offered to pay for half. He denied that there was a problem with the belts. He did call Tractor Supply but they stated they did not want to get involved. Not wanting to deal with Slate Creek, I called several authorized service centers and met with the same response that even if the belt was replaced, it would continue to come off because of a bad design with the 54-in. deck pulley system. They had no problems with the 50-inch decks.

I checked the internet and found this to be a common problem as well. I called Bill back and told him of my findings and said I did not want a temporary fix. He stated there was no problem with the deck/belt/pulley system or he would have seen a technical bulletin. I told him of my discussions with his authorized service centers as well as the endless consumer complaints on the internet. He advised me to have the service center I had chosen pick it up and have them call him. One of the repair reps suggested that the mower was returned to Tractor Supply and resold to me as new. Since he was the designated service center for TS in his area, he knew this to be true for several other mowers and actually advised people to return their mowers if they had a problem prior to the 30-day return deadline. He stated that Bill would not approve anything other than a new spring and belt even though he had presented to Cub Cadet a pulley system that he designed that would fix the problem permanently.

After seeing countless complaints from consumers online for this same problem as well as from neighbors and friends, I decided to go higher. I have mailed letters to the CEO, President and COO, Board of Directors of MTD (Mtdproducts.com) and the Director of Marketing at Cub Cadet and encourage others who have issues with their products to do the same. I will do the same for Tractor Supply.

After sending it back to the company for repairs, I was told it wasn't covered by the warranty and I would have to pay to get it fixed. I did and still have the same problem. Now I have learned that this particular model was recalled from the dealers but not the consumers because of the factory defect, and if I want it fixed, it only cost $600 to buy the replacement deck for it. WOW. What a deal - only half the cost of the mower to fix the problem that the company caused to start with. I'm not real happy with the piece of junk I actually paid my hard-earned money for.

There are/were many design and reliability issues. The mower left an uncut swath between blades from the very beginning. The lawn had to be cut twice, progressing only 10-12" per cut, with a 40" deck? I complained to Cub, and of course the first response was "No one else has had this problem." What an insult to one’s integrity. All directions were followed; i.e. re-sharpening and balancing blades, adjusting deck levels, attempting different speeds, and brought back to the dealer a number of times, without ANY improvement. The dealer verified this was a common complaint.

The accelerator and brake pedals are on the same side, within inches of each other, easily engaging both concurrently. When backing off of the trailer (new), the accelerator was engaged, while trying to engage the brake, and the tractor flipped on top of me. Grass is discharged completely around the periphery of the deck and leaves clippings piled on each side of the deck. I tried the mulcher attachment, without any improvement. The yard looks like wind-rowed hay field cutting. The deck mower belt entangled with the transmission drive belt resulting in costly repairs, while mowing on a level surface.

I am in my 60's and have owned a number of riding mowers over the years. Cub Cadet/MTD is by far the poorest example of engineering and quality that I have experienced. Compounding the inferior quality is the indignant attitude of their customer service culture. MTD's culture appears to focus on dealer incentives and motivation to sell rather than customer satisfaction. Well, as a former engineer and corporate leader, I have helped MTD resolve their issues and mine. I bought a Husqvarna and my problems have disappeared. Consumer Reports agrees. MTD is on the "too good for consumer" path to extinction.

I have had my LTX 1040 for a little over three years. After the first 3-4 months, the problems started. Let me say, it is a 2009 model with a blade timing belt. Within a month of buying it, the spring that engages the drive belt on the deck came off. I took it to an authorized service dealer. THEY didn't know how to reattach the spring. Within a year, it gets very light use. My whole deck started shaking when I cut. I replaced the drive belt, to no avail. The blades were out of time, I corrected this; it still rattled and shook.

When I finally found another authorized dealer, they kept it for another two weeks, replaced one spindle and said it was fixed. As soon as I got home and started it and engaged the blades, they began to bang against each other. The dealer did not time the belts. I set the timing on them myself. Now after a few months and not a lot of use, it is back in the same condition.

It is the sorriest excuse for a lawn tractor I have ever had. If I could get a new deck with an updated design, it might actually be okay as the engine has been no problem. The design of the cutting deck must have been done by an intern, first year at that. Never again will I buy a Cub Cadet. My last tractor, an inexpensive MTD, lasted 15 years and I only had to spend a little over $100 on repair in that time. NO more CCs for me.

    Reviewed May 23, 2013

I bought the Cub Cadet LTX1050 in 2010 from Home Depot. At about 28th hour on the meter, the deck drive belt flew off. The problem was the cheap sheet metal pulley spot welded together and bearing. There are two of them on my deck; one has to deal with a pulley elevation change. (The belt comes from a pulley at a different height.) That's the one that went out on my deck. Any heavy load will make this pulley wiggle flexing the sheet metal causing fatigue cracks to form and then failure soon follows. You are better off mowing more often and going fast than to let it grow and try to mow too fast. The deck cannot take the load. The drier the grass, the better (less load on deck). I just happen to work at a place with a machine shop. So I made a new pulley out of aluminum. Yeah, I know steel would last longer but I did not have any lying around that big.

I made the pulley so it would accommodate a new bigger and stronger bearing, #3203 with double seals. See print below. I hope it's readable. The bearing can handle 2,900lbs of dynamic load capacity instead of 2,140lbs or less for the bearing that was in the pulley already. The new bearing is 17.5mm wide compared to 12mm wide cheap bearing. I also had to make new spacers to deal with the new bearing width. It's all working well for the moment. I know for sure this pulley is not flexing under load so that design flaw has been removed. I expect the other sheet metal pulley to go out soon. The next time, I will let the grass get too long and try to mow too fast. At that time, I will make another pulley to replace that one. Now all that load will start to tear up the three spindles in the deck. The sheet metal the deck is stamped from is a little thin and can flex also making hard to keep the pulleys aligned during heavy load and the belt will fly off. The spindles are made of cast aluminum so they are the next weakest link. If anybody makes a pulley out of steel or aluminum, be sure to sand smooth the belt contact surface and the lead in angles on the pulley so it will not rough up the belt.

The other things that have gone bad are the battery had to be replaced. Most of the stickers are rolling up and peeling off. The seat has not gone bad, it was bad from the start. My yard is a little rough and bumpy and it needs to be rolled. The seat feels like it is trying to split me up the center. My butt hurts for two days after I mow. I think my crack is wider than it used to be. I guess it's the price I pay until I can afford a lawn roller. I might have to put a bucket seat out of an old car or boat on it. The worst thing is the reverse just plain sucks. It is so slow like below mph, more like 1 foot per min and has no power. I cannot back up on a hill. Are all Cub Cadets from the same year this way or is it just mine? I figure it's for safety reasons. It's so safe a snail can outrun it. Can anybody tell me a modification to change the speed and power in reverse? Is there an adjustment to change the speed in reverse? Is there a flow control port I can drill out to increase the volume of flow of hydraulic oil in reverse? Can anything be done to change this?

The machine has been a nightmare, requiring major service each year I've owned it. With less than 25 hours on the machine, the reverse safety switch went out. I brought it to a local authorized dealer (Acres Power Equipment in East Longmeadow, MA). They serviced the machine, but it took nearly four months before I got it back. In 2012, the engine blew on the tractor, leaving a huge oil spot of dead grass on my lawn. I returned it to the original dealer, Troy Tractor, who replaced the engine under warranty.

This year, 2013, I tried to start the tractor for some work on April 5. After checking the battery and the fuse (both were OK), I took the tractor again to Acres Power Equipment. It has been 3 weeks. The grass is getting long and still no tractor. I called Cub Cadet. I spoke to Bill in customer service, but received no satisfaction. If Cub Cadet, owned by MTD Power Equipment, is going to continue to sell their inferior products, they should develop a quality network of dealers to service their products in a timely fashion. Rest assured that I will not purchase any MTD or Cub Cadet products in the future, nor would I recommend their product to anyone.
