What is Vivint Smart Home?

Vivint Smart Home is a home security and automation company. It designs integrated smart home security systems, including features such as professional installation and 24/7 monitoring. The company was founded in 1999 and is based in Provo, Utah.

How does Vivint work?

Vivint uses advanced technology to keep your home secure. Here’s a quick breakdown of how some of the components work:

  • Wireless sensors: Detect activity around doors and windows to provide alerts.
  • Smart thermostats: Allow you to control the temperature remotely via the Vivint app.
  • Smart locks: Enable you to lock or unlock doors remotely and manage access codes.
  • Doorbell cameras: Provide video footage of your entryway and allow two-way communication.

The Vivint Smart Hub is the central control panel that runs on a cellular connection and connects to the Vivint app. Through the panel or app, you can monitor and control all your integrated devices.

You need a wireless connection to use a Vivint system because the Smart Hub uses Wi-Fi to connect. However, Vivint has a cellular backup that allows the system to work if your Wi-Fi goes out.

Vivint packages and pricing

The total cost of a home security system from Vivint varies based on the package and equipment you choose. There’s no option for do-it-yourself installation, but since installation costs are typically waived, we don’t mind too much.

Vivint offers four standard packages, but each can be customized to include the equipment you need.

  • Vivint Security Starter, $1,899.99+: Includes Smart Hub control panel, two door/window sensors and a motion sensor. Professional monitoring services for this package start at $31.67 per month.
  • Vivint Doorbell Security, $674.98: Includes a Smart Hub, four door/window sensors, a motion sensor, and a doorbell camera. Professional monitoring services start at $36.47 per month.
  • Vivint Safety & Security, $1,024.99: Includes Smart Hub, four door/window sensors, a motion sensor, a doorbell camera, a water sensor, a smoke and carbon monoxide detector, and an outdoor camera. Professional monitoring services start at $41.47 per month.
  • Vivint HomeProtect, $349.99: Includes the Vivint app, motion sensor, three door/window sensors, keypad and Security Hub. Unlike Vivint’s other systems, HomeProtect can be purchased without a contract. The no-contract version costs $349.99 plus $199 for professional installation, or you can pay $199.99 and get free installation if you sign a three-year contract.

Equipment can be purchased upfront at the listed cost or financed. Financing terms can vary. Vivint also occasionally runs substantial promotions on its equipment packages, so keep an eye out for those.

Vivint equipment

Vivint’s base equipment includes its Vivint Smart Hub panel, motion sensors and door/window sensors. You can add more equipment options to your security or smart home automation package to personalize your system.

More equipment options

Vivint has a wide range of equipment available for purchase. Options include:

  • Outdoor Camera Pro: It is high-definition and has a 140-degree field of view and night vision. If the camera detects someone, it activates an 85-decibel speaker and lights up.
  • Indoor camera: The indoor camera records when it detects people present and sends notifications to your phone. It also has a two-way talk feature.
  • Doorbell camera: Vivint’s doorbell camera has Smart Deter technology to stop package theft: If it sees someone trying to take a package, it activates a 90-decibel speaker and LED ring. The camera has a 180-degree-by-180-degree field of view and night vision.
  • Door and window sensors: The wireless sensors communicate with the hub and app, sending alerts and sounding alarms. They have a five-year battery life.
  • Smart lock: The Kwikset smart lock lets you assign up to 50 unique access codes for family members and friends. You can also stay informed on who’s unlocking and locking doors and use the Vivint app to lock and unlock remotely.
  • Smart lighting: Manage your lights without flipping switches. You can set custom lighting schedules and save on energy costs.
  • Smart garage door controller: Use the app to open and shut your garage from anywhere. The app also notifies you if you leave the garage door open.
  • Smart thermostat: Control the temperature in your home from anywhere.
  • Smoke alarm/carbon monoxide detector: The smoke alarm shuts off your HVAC system in a fire to help slow the spread and automatically unlocks your doors, while the carbon monoxide detector connects you to monitoring if there’s a harmful level of the odorless gas.

Vivint home security FAQ

How much does a Vivint home security system cost per month?

As of publishing, recurring monthly fees for all packages include:

  • Smart home monitoring: $29.99
  • Video service: $5 per camera
  • Cell network maintenance fee: $1.48

Monthly Vivint costs depend on your system and whether or not you finance the equipment. Equipment financing varies depending on the type and quantity of devices you purchase and the specific financing terms you select.

Can Vivint be used without monitoring?

No, all Vivint systems include professional monitoring, and there’s no way to opt out of it.

How do you cancel Vivint?

To cancel your Vivint service, call customer support at 1-800-678-2635. The company has specific policies for active duty military customers, as well as customers who are moving or have extenuating circumstances.

Is Vivint safe from hackers?

Vivint’s Smart Hub encrypts signals to keep cameras, recordings and devices safe from breaches. The company recommends taking steps to secure your wireless network, such as regularly changing passwords and updating software and hardware. Keep in mind that hacking is always a possibility with any home security system that uses wireless technology.

Is Vivint worth it?

The majority of Vivint customers would recommend the company to a friend, but its customer support has received mixed reviews. Most report positive experiences, but some have expressed concerns about long hold times, cancellation policies, billing issues and technical assistance. That said, Vivint's system and services have a lot of great tech, and we think they’re an excellent option to consider for your home security needs.

We have had a Vivint system since 2017. It had started to be slow and glitchy and we needed a new co2 sensor. We happened to see the Vivint reps at Costco and decided after taking to them that we would just purchase a new system through Costco. They were so nice and very helpful. Tech David came and was very professional. We realized that in order to install the new system we had to cancel the current one which seemed to cause problems Including a 30 day wait period with no system at all.

After 2 1/2 hours of being online with a Jessica and the loyalty department we finally found a solution that would allow me to have the new system installed. Jessica and David were so helpful. The loyalty department was not. I was transfers multiple times and left on hold. There was a huge language barrier at times and they spent way too much co time trying to talk me out of canceling my account instead of trying to understand the actual problem and finding the right person to help, in the end we were able to reschedule David to come back and install my system. He did a fantastic job. Was on time and totally focused on getting things installed and working properly. He answered all my questions and got the app going for us.

Vivint, did a very good job installing my security system. They took their time and planned the positioning and placement of each camera perfectly. From the salesman to the installers everything was explained very clearly how to use the system. The pricing of their equipment (cameras, screen touch pad) are a bit pricey, but looking at the continuous recording and the 24/7 Montoring you can’t go wrong.

Compared to just snippets recording some other security cameras other companies provide. You missed what really happened and it’s not in real time it’s delayed, with Vivint it’s all real time right now footage. And a person can lock / unlock their door and control everything from the palm of your hand with your phone. Also, if you needed to call any first responders that can be done as well, when you may need it most. Go with Vivint. You will be so happy you did. Have a blessed day and be safe out there, I’m home and I’m safe in here, thank you Vivint.

Vivint is HORRIBLE! I was renting a house that had their cameras already pre-installed. When I moved I called and let them know that I will not be renting that house anymore therefore I do not need their services and I needed to cancel. I did not want service anymore from them and there were new renters moving in immediately. I moved out in November and in March they took three payments out of my account for past due payments. These were for services that I no longer received at a rental.

When I called to get my money back, I was on the phone for over an hour. Customer service had the nerve to ask me for the new renters phone numbers so they could just transfer the account? I had nothing to do with the new renters! They also told me they would give me six months for free! They tried giving me a lower rate. But after multiple issues with their cameras while I had their service, and the low poor quality of their video, there was no way I was transferring their service to a new house. The solution finally was that I still had to pay for three months of service that I did not receive. I was the one held financially responsible because they neglected to finish this cancellation process with me. The new renters got Vivint services under my name for free!

Never will I ever suggest this company to anyone. The fact that they couldn't make this right and give me my money back and the fact that they were more concerned about keeping the account open is the reason why I did not transfer their services. Had they made this an easier process for me to cancel and give me my money back for services I never received, I will not be writing this. Their morality here is absolutely wrong! The fact that they thought I would continue business with them when they were charging me for services that somebody else was receiving is mind blowing!

Jose came out and installed my Vivint security system. He was very professional, informative, and very helpful today. He guided me through all the steps and he was very patient. Even when he had to send something multiple times because I was at work and the wi-fi seemed to be having some issues and taking longer to load the documents than normal. Jose went over and beyond today. My smoke detector has been going off for years but I have such high ceilings upstairs the smoke dector is difficult to get to. Jose disconnected it for me because he would constantly beep all day. Problem solved, no more beeping, thank you Jose.

Jose even waited for me to get off from work so he could show me how to do the panel and work everything and sign anything else I needed to sign. He was very helpful with my parents coaching them on how to do the panel also. You have a true star on your team and that is Jose. If I could give 10 stars I would. Jose you are the best and thank you, thank you, thank you for everything.

After the terrifying experience of being robbed in our home on Thursday, we knew we needed to take immediate action to protect ourselves and restore our sense of safety. From the very first interaction, this security company exceeded every expectation we had. Josh was absolutely incredible. He listened carefully to everything we had been through and took the time to understand our specific concerns. He never rushed us, answered every single question with patience, and made us feel truly heard. His empathy, professionalism, and genuine care meant more than I can express during such a vulnerable time.

The installer, Kenneth, was equally outstanding. His professionalism was beyond impressive. He was meticulous, respectful of our home, and explained everything clearly so we felt confident and comfortable with the entire system. He worked efficiently but never made us feel rushed, and his calm, reassuring demeanor helped ease a very stressful situation.

Both Josh and Kenneth showed not only exceptional technical skill, but also compassion and understanding. That combination is rare. They helped turn a frightening experience into one where we finally feel secure and protected again. I cannot recommend this company highly enough. If you are looking for a security company that is professional, knowledgeable, patient, and truly cares about their clients, this is the one. We are beyond grateful.
