About Abode

Abode is a do-it-yourself home security system that offers professional and self-monitoring. You can customize your system to protect your home from break-ins, fire, flooding and other events. Abode also has home automation capabilities and can integrate with smart home platforms like Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. Equipment from Abode is simple enough to install without tools.

Pros
  • No contracts
  • Self-monitoring option
  • Simple DIY installation
  • Multiple smart home integrations
Cons
  • Cellular backup only with Pro Plan
  • Fewer devices than some other companies

How does Abode security work?

First, you’ll build your security system by choosing one of three hubs and adding any supplementary devices you want. You can build your system on your own or choose from one of the handful of bundles Abode offers. Once you select your package or build your unique system, it’s time to set it up.

Abode guarantees a simple setup that comes together in minutes. Once you set up the system, you can monitor your home from anywhere with the mobile app. Homeowners can choose self-monitoring or professional monitoring for their system.

Abode monitoring options

You don’t need a monitoring plan to use basic Abode features. Free self-monitoring allows you to watch live video of your home and control system equipment from your phone. You receive immediate notifications if something happens. All of these features are available without a plan.

If you upgrade to the standard self-monitoring plan, though, you can also access a timeline of security events, store and view recorded video clips and set up automations.

Professional monitoring offers more dependable protection. Homeowners get 24/7 coverage with rapid emergency response for security, medical and fire emergencies when smoke alarm monitors are installed. There’s also cellular backup in case Wi-Fi fails. Professional monitoring ensures your home is monitored even when you have to be away from your phone.

With professional monitoring, you can hit the panic button and get an immediate response from the monitoring center. With self-monitoring, a press of the panic button will alert all your system’s users that you’re in need of help.

Abode plans and pricing

You don’t need a monitoring plan to use basic Abode features. The standard self-monitoring plan costs $7.99 per month ($74.99 when you pay annually). The professional plan costs $25.99 per month ($239.99 when you pay annually).

Abode hubs and cameras

The company offers three base security kit options. The following pricing reflects hardware costs before taxes. Special offers or bundling equipment with monitoring plans can lower the overall price.

  • Abode Security Kit: This kit, which starts at $130, includes the lowest-cost base with no Apple HomeKit connectivity. You can use the Abode Security Kit with Wi-Fi, Google Home and Amazon Alexa.
  • iota All-in-One Security Kit: This kit, which starts at $400, includes an all-in-one base with a built-in motion sensor and security camera. You can use the iota All-in-One Security Kit with Wi-Fi and Apple HomeKit, as well as other smart home platforms.
  • Smart Security Kit: This kit, which starts at $300, uses a traditional base that supports Apple HomeKit and other smart home platforms. It must be plugged into your home router with an Ethernet cable for internet connection.

The company also sells stand-alone security cameras that don’t require a hub.

Abode homeowners insurance discount

Many insurance providers offer premium discounts for having a home security system, like those offered by Abode. Depending on your insurer, you might qualify for a smaller discount with self-monitoring, but savings are typically higher for professionally monitored systems with more safety features.

Abode FAQ

Can you get professional monitoring with Abode?

Yes, professional monitoring is available with Abode. It’s not the only option, however. Abode also offers DIY monitoring.

How do you install an Abode security system?

Customers can install Abode security systems themselves. The website has video guides for customers to follow when installing keypads, sensors and more. Most devices use adhesive mounts and connect through the Abode app, so installation doesn’t require tools or wiring.

How do you contact Abode customer service?

Customers can reach Abode support through live chat, email or phone. Phone and live chat support are available daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. PST. You can reach Abode by phone at 650-443-7834 and email at support@goabode.com.

Is Abode completely wireless?

No, not all Abode kits and products are completely wireless. Hubs and some security cameras use power cables, while other devices are battery-powered and connect to the hub through radio frequency or Wi-Fi. Abode doesn’t sell any products that require complex wiring or professional installation.

What happens if the power goes out with Abode?

Abode hubs have battery backup to keep the system online temporarily while power is restored. Because other devices like door and motion sensors communicate with the hub via radio frequency, the system will still work.

If a power outage knocks out your Wi-Fi, Abode’s professional monitoring plan includes cellular backup to keep your system connected to your phone. If you don’t have cellular backup, your hub will still trigger alarms during an outage, but you won’t receive mobile alerts until your internet connection is restored.

Does Abode offer security cameras?

Yes, Abode sells an indoor/outdoor security camera and a video doorbell that connect to Wi-Fi. Both can be used as part of a complete security system or as stand-alone security cameras without a hub. Live video viewing is available for free, while recorded video clips require the standard or professional plan.

Can I use Abode without a monitoring plan?

Yes, you can use Abode without a monitoring plan and self-monitor for free, but features are limited. For example, you can view live video from your cameras, but recordings aren’t stored, and you won’t receive professional monitoring or cellular backup.

Is Abode a good security system?

Yes, Abode offers many appealing security features for homeowners. It’s affordable, has no contracts, and lets customers choose to monitor their systems themselves.

Abode also has its limitations, though: It doesn’t offer as many devices as some other companies, and unless you choose a professional monitoring plan, your system won’t have cellular backup.

Overall, Abode is a good choice, especially if your security needs are small and simple.

I found Abode through research online and I went with them due to their Apple HomeKit integration. I'm happy with their price, and the service has been mostly positive. Anytime I need to call them to get an issue resolved, I usually get it resolved. It's not something that's left outstanding. I've had a few issues here and there with cellular connection of the equipment to the network, but I can usually get it resolved via a phone call with them. This last time, I needed to get a new SIM card. They sent me a new SIM card, and now, I need to have them walk me through its installation. Overall, Abode has been great. I've had to use them on one instance when the police needed to be called, but it was a false alarm.

I was looking to replace my security provider, and I came across Abode. My home security before was decent. But I ended up getting some more cameras and equipment from Abode. I like the variety of devices they have, from basement temperature and water monitors, to the interaction with other Z-wave devices that I can add to it, as well as the ability of the cameras to monitor everything from my phone. My last provider didn't provide these, unless I wanted to invest a lot of money. So, I chose Abode from an overall price perspective and for the ease of setup and use. I also didn't need somebody to come out to my house because I could do it all myself.

The only criticism I have about them was that I paid for an all-inclusive plan when I first signed up. And then about a year after, I had an issue with a camera. I initially called them but they told me the plan no longer covers it. They never sent out a notification about that. But other than that, it's been great. I would say, even though I'm not happy about that one issue, I would recommend them over other providers based on their products and services, and my experience. Overall, it's a very high-quality experience.

I was looking for a variety of specific features for a reasonable cost, a level of control over how the system operates, and being able to have a level of DIY to the system. That’s when I found Abode online. It's a good balance where it's not overly costly. And I have enjoyed some of the features even on a basic level, having temperature monitoring through some of their sensors.

I like the way the self-monitoring works with the ability to forward calls to 911 as well as the option to have the professional monitoring center. I like the selection of sensors. I work as an automation engineer so testing things like this extensively before using them is important to me. I tested all the sensors and made sure that they worked as I would expect them to. I'm happy with that as well.

I have a 15-year-old water heater so I'm glad to have that ability to keep an eye and make sure that there's no flooding, through the water leak detector feature. I'm happy with the product. I like the features that are available. I'm just a little bit concerned about future support and I'm hoping that they'll expand the system in the future.

My garage had been broken into and it made me more nervous about somebody breaking in my house. So, I was looking for a home security system that I could manage myself for home automation and would give me a lot of control over stuff. I didn't want to have it where for anything that went wrong, the system would call the police, and I would have the false alarms calling them. I found Abode through Googling and doing a lot of research, then I rode it down that way.

I like the Home setting, where you can set entry windows and doors. Even if the alarm is off and I'm at home, I'm still notified if somebody's coming in or out. I can set it to call me instead of the police first, and then I can decide if I want to do that or not is really nice as well. 'I've had a couple of false alarms so far and one was due to a faulty window sensor that they fixed and replaced for me. At the time, I wasn't home and they called me. But I knew ahead of time, so I called 911, but I was able to have them walk through the house with me on the phone to check it out, which was nice. So, that worked out well instead of having police coming when I was 99% sure it was a false alarm, which it was. So all the control I have over the security system is the best feature of Abode.

I've been able to use the system for a lot of other things, too, like cooling off my house. I have a whole-house fan in the window in the attic that's unfinished, and if I need to turn it on, I use one of the Abode Plug Things with that, and I could turn it on and off from downstairs. So, it's fun to have all these things that I can do with it. It also has all sorts of additional things on it and I like that. Setting up some of the automations is a bit of a pain and I wanted to switch that over to using something called a Home Assistant, but I haven't had time. And that's another reason why I wanted to get Abode because it's kind of a DIY whole-home automation system.

I've also had a really good experience with their customer service when I called them several times. I was a little nervous getting Abode because I saw so many people say that they never respond and they're horrible. The Abode system is hooked up to a third-party alarm call center, which is nice, and sometimes, they can take a little while to get back to me, but they've been really responsive overall.

When I had some problem initially with setting it up, I called them at a weird time on the weekend and they called me right back. They talked to me and I had a really good time when they called me about alarms. It only happened three times and most of the time, it happened when I had the system set to Home, then I went outside, and I forgot to turn it off. But they called me and they were clever about it. They asked for my mom, who I've set up as my backup person if I don't answer. But they do that to determine if it's somebody who's not supposed to be answering their call.

Aside from that, different cities have different requirements for working alarm systems to be approved and I'm in Milwaukee where the alarm company needs to be registered. It turned out they were, but it's not under the name Abode. It's under this other third-party alarm system thing. So, depending on where you are and what your municipality's rules are, you might need to ask Abode. They have some web pages about it. But if you need to determine if it's approved for your municipality, you might have to look up the name of that other service. That was confusing to get set up or to understand, but it's not been a problem.

There are different plans you can get with Abode and I have the one where the system is hooked to a cell. If the power goes out, it has a battery power backup and a cell backup. So, instead of a Wi-Fi network or Ethernet, I have to plug it in. I also plugged mine into a larger battery backup, so if my power goes out longer than that battery lasts, then it'll use another battery backup. I also like that I get to set up the sensors where and how I want them. I have a window sensor on a double-hung window. In the summer, I need to move the sensor up because there's an air conditioner unit in there. So, if the window gets opened, it's opening at a higher level than it normally does. But in the winter, I need to move it back down. The sensors stick on the window and you can move them yourself, so that's fine.

For their price, Abode is less expensive than a lot of other ones depending on what service you pick. There's an add-on for cameras that I need to get. I got some of the cameras, but I'm still trying to figure out where they are. I also like that the cameras are set with Abode where nobody in the alarm system company can access them unless the alarm is actively going off, and then it'll take recordings. Otherwise, no one can see them and the system doesn't allow that.

Sometimes I travel for work or for fun for some amount of time. If the alarm were to go off, it would be great if they had a recording of who was in there, and they could see it. But I wouldn't want people to be able to see me whenever they wanted from some random company that happened to have some creep who works there who's just accessing people's cameras. Right now, I still have to trust that Abode is telling the truth that nobody can access the cameras unless the alarm is actively going off.

My son has Abode. He used to have Vivint then he moved from Salt Lake City and he did Abode. I have Vivint as well in my main house but in my second house, there's no cell service. So, I have a Starlink dish and I use Abode on that. I've been using them for two and a half years and I went with them because I like the features. They're ahead of their time and their competitors. I felt good after getting the Abode security system and it gives me peace of mind. It's reasonably priced, too, though the prices could be better. Also, they had a do-it-yourself installation which was pretty easy to do. The quality of the cameras and the responsiveness when I inadvertently set off an alarm are both good. The tech support is okay though sometimes it's frustrating because the hours of their customer service reps are limited. So, you do a lot of emails back and forth.

My wife wanted a security system, so we went ahead and got Abode. I was never scared, but now that I have it, I don't want to be without it. It provides a nice sense of security. I liked the Abode system's integration with Alexa, the Apple, and the iPhone. I've had it for so long and so far, the experience has been okay though it's a little glitchy sometimes. I like the ability to monitor things from my phone when I'm away. But there are some better systems that integrate more home automation within them rather than having separate systems for alarms and cameras and locks. Also, Abode's camera system is lacking compared to a lot of the other systems.

I had a seamless experience with Abode. It was easy to set up everything. All the instructions were clear and I had no real issues. Also, I liked how Abode can package the deals and what I needed specifically for my house. It works well. It doesn't interfere with my life, which is what I want. I like the automations where you could turn it off with just your location. I've had other self-install systems and they were a more challenging than this. This is a great step up.

I did some research on the internet, and Abode seemed to be cost-effective and innovative. I was looking at some new ways of doing things. They seemed to be the best option at the time. Functionality is very good. The flexibility of the software is my favorite feature. Camera performance is poor. The power supplies don't work well outdoors, and most of the power supplies I purchased had to be replaced. Also, Abode's team could shorten their callback time when they do receive an alarm. I know they receive a lot of false alarms, but they should shorten their callback time from the time an alarm goes off until the time it's resolved. What happens is they give you 45 seconds to resolve it on your own. If it goes away, then they don't call you.
