Ordered through the Microsoft eCompany store and received the unit via UPS. The machine was faulty right out of the box as the first thing I saw on my screen was the error code for a hard drive malfunction. What a way to start! I called the support number and they told me to mail in the hard drive (on my dime). Before I even got the hard drive back, I get the three flashing red lights of doom. Called the support line again and they told me to wait for a shipping box in 3-5 business days and send in the whole machine.

I'm on my 2nd 360 console, it just broke! I paid $400 for this thing and it constantly crashes and locks up... the first time this happened MS wanted 200 dollars to repair it. I lucked out and got it exchanged at my local K-Mart (great company!). This time, I'm going to have to send to the factory for repairs. My problem is, I've had two of these $400 game consoles, and both have been faulty!!! Why are they allowed to sell these products if they will not work? Something needs to be done about this problem, and MS should not be allowed to make money on repair fees for products that they have sold that were faulty to start with.

Contacted Customer service 800-469-9269. Just bought an XBOX 360 system for Christmas 2006, upon setup the Hard Drive failed. Contacting Customer service on December 26 and 27, 2006 said that they would send out a prepaid box to send it in for repair or a new refurbished one. I waited until January 15, 2007. No box. I called them back and now they said they canceled my reference number for replacement and that it was policy for me to pay to send it in for repair or replacement. They will not send out a prepaid box.
I also informed them that my console has been overheating. They said I would need to send it in for repair. I asked them about intregrity and commitment to their customer and what about standing behind their product. I should not have to pay any additional money for a system I just bought for over $399.00 and three games at $50+ each. Customer service stated that was their policy. What do I do now? $399 + tax for console and hard drive $50 + each for three games hard drive does not work console freezes/overheats $25+ to send it in for repair or a refurbished system that has a 30% failure rate.

Like so many others, I have an Xbox 360 that has failed after only several months of use. This began with a freeze here or there and slowly escalated to nearly constant freezing and finally red lights indicating some sort of internal problem with the system. No games will last more than 5 minutes, movies will not play, and even the dashboard freezes after not too long. Fortunately, Microsoft has extended the warranty on ALL 360's to 1 year from the date of purchase, so this one is being returned for repair.
Realistically, I expect to get a refurbished unit back that will suffer the same fate after several months, if not immediately. After all the horror stories I have read, this problem is entirely too widespread and I have lost all faith in Microsoft to produce a console that won't fail. I have hundreds, if not thousands of dollars (with games) tied up in this console and it is only fitting that I expect the thing to last longer than 4 1/2 months.
There is no major damages other than the loss of my system during the time which it will take to perform repairs or replacement along with the shipping back and forth. I have brand new games that I would like to play, but a system incapable of playing them.

Microsoft said they would send a return box that I can send my unit to their repair center to get my unit fixed. So much for my kids being able to play their 360 games on Christmas or anytime before the end of the year. What a great way to spend Christmas break, using the Xbox 360 games as paper weights. I hope Microsoft gets their act together and starts sending out replacement units that actually work.

I purchased my xbox 360 roughly 2 1/2 months ago. After a month, it started freezing at random times. Also, I would have to start it, shut it down, and restart it several times before it would boot up and get the the logo screen. After hours of time on the phone trying to trouble shoot and half the time getting customer service reps that were very hard to understand, I had gotten everything done to send it in. I finally got it out for repair, and timed it so it would come back right before the holidays. Their repair centers shipping department then neglected to tag my package to require a signature.
My package arrived while I was at work, UPS dropped it off, and then someone stole it. I then had to argue with customer support about shipping for an hour. I am a shipping manager for a printing company, and the customer service rep was trying to tell me it is UPS's responsibility to make labels which is simply not the case. After I explained what I did for a living and how and WHY he was wrong, he then changed his story and argued that UPS had a satellite station at their repair center.
I have given up at this point. I work 6 days a week, and now have 2 4 day weekends due to the holidays and NO XBOX 360! I strongly urge people to stay away from the 360 and buy a wii instead, or a playstation 3. Sony has had no problems reported with their systems yet, and their customer support (from my experience) is top notch.

Microsoft released an update that bricked my Xbox 360. It was a mandatory update, and it caused a permanent, fatal hardware error in my unit. Now, they will not fix it free of charge, or even admit to the mistake. A search of the Official Xbox forums shows many people are having this problem. Microsoft claims it is a coincidence that all of these peoples systems, which were working fine just before the update, all of a sudden malfunctioned immediately following the update.
I paid $400 for an Xbox 360 unit (not including all the games and downloadable content, which is now completely unusable), only to have it destroyed by Microsoft. They want to charge me almost half the cost of a new system in order to fix THEIR mistake.
Also, by fix I mean they would send me a refurbished unit, with no guarantee that it would not be affected by the same problem, and on which I will not be able to play any of the content that I downloaded (at a cost) from the Xbox Live Marketplace. I called the Xbox support line, and they told me that my only choice was to send the Xbox in for repair. On December 14, 2006, I received a refurbished Xbox that was manufactured in December, 2005. I called the Xbox support line again, and they said I had no choice but to send in the refurbished unit for another REFURBISHED unit!
It is moronic that I spent over $450 for a unit that doesn't work due to their own faulty manufacturing (they are repairing units built before 2006 for free with refurbished units because they've had so many complaints). Almost immediately the same problems continued- the system will not read the games and it overheats and/or freezes up. We called Microsoft and was told to purchase a intercooler fan for the system and try it in a different room in the house, which we did that night. The problem continued and two days later we called microsoft again. They said to immediately remove the cooler as they do not recommend using it. They also said they would not replace it and that we would have to pay 50% of repairs!

At that time, my console began experiencing lock ups after 5-10 minutes of gameplay. The downward spiral continued until the machine would no longer boot at all, and would merely flash the 3 ring of doom indicating a general hardware fault.
Whether Microsoft chooses to admit this or not, there is a design flaw that has been skylined by the recent set of updates.

Well, I have spent a lot of money on the console, extra controllers, different cables, games, and five headsets (the first four failed) but now I cannot use them. Microsoft went back and issued extended warrenties on all machines manufactured before 01-01-06, claiming the problem had been traced back to those particular machines. However, that is OBVIOUSLY not the case. A very large portion of xboxs manufactured in 2006 are having the same crashing issues. I absolutely refuse to pay $140 to send it in to be repaired. All I want is for them to extend warrenties on all xboxs that are still experiencing these issues.

This unit was returned to the manufacturer and has yet to be returned to me. During this time, I purchased an ADDITIONAL xbox 360 console to use while the repair center was processing the exchange of the malfunctioning unit. After speaking to several customer service representatives we were told this is a common problem (the 3 red lights) and basically the older models (any system made prior to 1/1/06 ) was given a longer warranty of 2 years. My son's XBOX was made in May 06 and was not given the two year warranty even though Microsoft obviously knows that there is a problem with their system. This system is very costly and quite worthless to my son. I'd like to see someone take care of this problem. We have written letters of complaint to Microsoft but the only response that we receive in return is to contact customer service, yet again. There are many complaints on various websites about the 3 blinking lights. There is no reason for this system to have overheated except for faulty materials used in the system. We have asked repeatedly for an extended warranty or to have the system repaired at no additional cost to us but have not been successful. My son is very frustrated and it is upsetting to have a teenage save their money up for a worthless system and not even enjoy it.
This system was over $400.00 and to pay another $179.00 for repairs to a worthless system is ridiculous. It is bothersome that the customer service representatives know there is a big problem with three blinking lights yet no one wants to take responsibility for the problem.

I paid $575 for a new product, which then failed after only seven months. Now the replacement unit, which cost another $157, has also failed, and I had just purchased a $60 2-year warranty on the second unit. I have spent countless hours on the phone with Microsoft's tech support, and they have even promised to call me back on one occasion (but never did).

I puchased an Xbox 360 in January. The unit quit working at the beginning of October. I called their 800 number (1-800-4my-xbox) and told them the problem. They made me trouble shoot over the phone with them for 30 minutes. In the end of the conversation, they set me up to receive a box to ship my unit to their repair center. I went through that process and was happy to receive the repaired unit back in 2 weeks.
I plugged the unit in to play, and it did not work! It was worse than before I sent it to be repaired. I called them again and told them the problem. I was told that a second repair would require a manager's approval. I was put on hold for several minutes while I waited. The manager told me that Microsoft was no longer sending boxes out for consumers to use to send back their broken units. I let him know that this was a second repair and if they had fixed it the first time, I wouldn't need another box. He said he would override the rule and he would send me another box and shipping label. He also told me that my account with Microsoft would be flagged whatever that means.
I feel like I paid $300 for a new unit and I'm going to end up with a twice refurbished one!

Called ms support and they said that I woul have to pay them 139 dollars to repair my system. Took very good care of the system (I'm an adult that paid the 1500+ dollars for the system, accessories, and games out of my pocket). Since it was manufactured on 1/12/06 I didn't quality for a free warranty (12 days after the arbitrary cut off date).
Since I was out of warranty I opened up the system to try to fix it by replacing the thermal paste on the processor and gpu. That didn't work so I called xbox and set up an out of warranty repair. 2 weeks later I get a letter saying that isnce the system is tampered with it voided my warranty (I didn't have a warranty since it was more than 90 days from buying a system), and further since it was tampered with, they WOULD NOT repair it even at the 139 dollar price for an out of warranty repair. When transferred to a manager (named shinam), I was hung up on. I am writing to you to inform you of the extremely negative experience I have had with your companies Xbox 360 product. Please do not misinterpret my disappointment. Shockingly, the unit that was sent to replace my unit also did not work. I was extremely disappointed. Again, I called the support line and again I sent in the console to be serviced. One day later, I received the console back with a letter inside the shipping box stating that the console had been tampered with and the warranty was no longer valid therefore Microsoft could not service my unit. I immediately called the support line for a third time for an explanation. I was instructed on how to take the faceplate off and sure enough, could see that the Microsoft sticker had been ripped. At this point I was extremely annoyed. I had not tampered with my first console that was returned. I did not tamper with the second console that was returned. I figured this was a major problem because when you call the help support line, you immediately are given two navigation options that deal with overheating issues with the console. #1- Is your screen locked up? #2- Do you have flashing red lights on your console? Sounds like this is a major issue to me.
I asked the tech if this was a common problem with the console and he admitted that they were experiencing a high number of overheating reports. The tech then had me do all sorts of stuff, such as unplugging the unit from my surge protector and plugging it directly in the wall, resetting the time and date, removing the hard drive and letting the unit sit unplugged from the power supply for over three minutes. After all this run around, they referenced my serial number and found that it was out of warranty. I was told that it would take $140 to repair my unit.

Here is some info I found about the implied warranty: Generally, there is no specified duration for implied warranties under state laws. However, the state statutes of limitations for breach of either an express or an implied warranty are generally four years from date of purchase. This means that buyers have four years in which to discover and seek a remedy for problems that were present in the product at the time it was sold. It does not mean that the product must last for four years. It means only that the product must be of normal durability, considering its nature and price. I know the problem was present at the time it was sold and my Xbox 360 is in no way shape or form of normal durability for a game console and considering I paid $400 for it.

I purchased an Xbox 360 from a retailer about 2 months ago for $399 and started using it right away. I was eager to buy a game for it hoping that it would be worth the $60 I had to pay. Right from the get-go I was having Disconnected controller messages. I thought it could have been interferance with the controller since it uses the same frequency (2.4GHz) as my phone and that was the most likely cause in the troubleshooting book, so i disconnect the phone and still got the same problem. I unplugged everything that was running at that frequency and was still getting the Disconnected controller message about 3 to 4 times a race.
I moved the Xbox 360 to a different room, cleared all objects out of the direct path from the controller to the system and still had controller issues. How Annoying! Furthermore the Xbox 360 would sometimes give Unable to read disc errors when loading a level. I thought is was the disc so i bought Perfect Dark Zero and the same thing happened to a different brand new disc. I was irate at this point. When I did get the disc to play I was happy and didn't want to take the Xbox 360 back to the retailer, but the straw that broke the camels back was when in the middle of a game the system just shutdown on me.
Enough is enough. I shouldn't have to pay $400 for an entertainment system that doesn't work the way it ought to. Microsoft didn't bother ironing out all of the wrinkles before unleashing this system to the world and now Sony will reap the benefits by me and other unhappy Xbox 360 owners. I returned the system to the retailer and will anxiously await Sony's product...after I have had a chance to read its consumer reports.
I received my $400 back from the retailer, but consequently, I lost out on $120 of Xbox 360 games because now I can't return them or play them. I am forced to keep them or sell them at a ridiculously low price to 3rd party vendors.

our XBOX 360 crashed...my husband stood in line on a cold november night to purchase the 360 game for our four boys that lost their original xbox in the hurricane. initially, the game would freeze up, we thought from over use. we moved the console on top of our tv to allow full ventalation and put the kids on a play/cool down schedule. the problem happened less frequently, but was not eliminated. it no doubt improved based on limiting play time. we heard on the news at christmas time that the units were overheating and freezing, but were not being recalled. now the three red lights appear on the ring and completely halts use. despite following the advice of XBOX.COM and calling for tech support it still will not turn on.
they claim we broke our own xbox because we had it plugged into a surge protector. Microsoft told us that the power cord acts as it's on surge protector and that the manufacturer (manual) states that it must be plugged directly into the wall outlet. we argued that the manual does not caution against using a surge protector and that our insurance company would not pay to replace any electronics, after the storm, that were not protected by a surge protector. we also argued the fact that we had a green light on the power cord's box indicating that the problem was not with it receiving a power supply. they told me to refer to the drawing in the manual depicting the cord being plugged into a wall outlet. after that patronizing remark they offered to repair our unit $139.00.
we do not want to pay $139.00 to repair every 6 months.

Joseph Enoch's article on the Xbox 360 comes in a very timely manner. I purchased a new Xbox 360 for my sons 34th birthday on June 10 2006. On August 30th we had a complete shut down of the system due to the dreaded Red Rings of Death. We attempted to immediately re-boot the system which also failed. After leaving the system sit to cool off, we were able to restart the system. Having experience this event, we called Xbox to find out how we could save the information on the Xbox Hard drive to a Connected PC as describe in my sons Volume 1 - Setup manual, Page 21 (US manual, Page 22 UK manual).
It is my understanding that on the early units this statement appears in the Hard Drive Manual. At first XB support could find no reference to this item. After more than 45 minutes they finally did find the reference only to tell us they had no documentation to tell us how to do this, and after further investigation on the part of XB support we were told it COULD NOT BE DONE. As I recall, this is one of the many features that were applauded in the gamer and PC magazines about this machine. Now we find out that it is another TOTALLY FALSE CLAIM on the part of Microsoft.
Pushing the point with XB tech support by asking for the MS Legal Dept contact to file a false advertising/statement complaint, they finally agreed to send us a memory card to meet what I felt was part of their obligation to be able to backup the drive based on their own Volume 1 setup manual. Obviously, a 64meg card can in no way fully back-up the Xbox Hard Drive. With over $1200 now invested in system and games, and many hours of play by my son, we immediately spent another $150 to purchase 2 memory cards and a XSATA adapter to be able to totally backup the systems HD. Today I happened across Mr. Enoch's article. It now appears that our Red Ring of Death may only be a warning of impending total failure.
I am retired after 25 years in computer hardware and networking and find this situation with the XBox 360 completely unacceptable. Further, knowing that less than 10% of the XB owners with these problems will take the time to file or document a complaint only makes the situation worse. Maybe it's time for a class action against Microsoft for their totally incompetent design of this system with its obvious false claims and high failure rate. I can only advise people to buy the extended warranty as they will certainly need it. Color me Red with anger and completely unhappy with the Xbox 360. And we won't even discuss the fact that after being on the phone with MS for the first hour we were cut off and I had to start fresh when I called them back.

On July 18, my console began to have numerous glitches/errors and the screen would freeze. Then all of the sudden it would show the three red lights on the front of console meaning that it had an internal hardware failure. Research online shows MANY others with identical problems, just check the xbox'x official site forum at forums.xbox.com.I also came across numerous people's blogs about this problem, including an editorial devoted to the 360's hardware problem. After more researching about this problem on Microsoft's tech support site.
I decided to call their support line at 1-800-4MYXBOX and after going through numerous procedures with phone tech, they told me I would have to send it in to them for repair. They told me that I would have to pay to have my xbox repaired .This is evidently a hardware problem by Microsoft and I am not at all satisfied with have to pay upward of $100 to just have my console fixed. This is not a limited/isolated problem nor one that could have been caused by my misuse. This product has a design problem that many have been effected by. I would like my Xbox repaired or replaced at their expense. A NEW xbox 360 console or my current system repaired, either at a reduced price.
Spent $500 extra on games, etc for a faulty console.Which makde me feel very stupid and that I should have known better.

Bought Xbox 360 with extended warranty for my grandkids 2-06. It broke 7/5/06 after less than 12 times of use. Called extended warranty the person said put everything back in the box and send it to them for repair or money back. I sent back xbox, but included the external hard drive since it came with the xbox, per person I talked to. BestBuy did not even try to fix the xbox, they refunded me $318.00. I called them and said they need to refund me for the external hard drive I sent them but they said I did not buy a seperate policy on the hard drive. I said fine, send it back as it just snaps into the xbox. Amy said she would try to get the warehouse to send it back but Carolyn, the supervisor said they cannot send anything back, even though her person told me to include everything in box when I sent it back.
First of all, BestBuy's 2 year replacement warranty is only good ONCE unlike Microsoft's extended warranty of 2 years. Nobody told me that until I had a problem to read the fine print, I could only collect on the replacement plan ONCE, it was not good for 2 years as I thought, no matter how many times it failed. Also, they only sent me $318.00 and the xbox 360 is now costing $399.00 plus tax so I lost $100.00 due to inflation. FINALLY, their operator told me to send everything back to them to diagnose what the problem was or send me my money back.....and I lost another $100.00 for the external hard drive I sent back because they did not reimburse me for that and they say they cannot send the external hard drive back to me. This is a rip off because if I would have bought the extended warranty from microsoft for $10 more, I would have had a full 2 year warranty no matter how many times it failed.

I bought an XBOX 360 towards the end of December of 2005 - approx. 12/24/2005. The product began to malfunction almost immediatley. I though maybe it was the game that was the problem, but the 'box' would freeze up regardless of the game I played. I was preparing to move into my new condominium, so I didn't take care of the issue right away. I finally reported the problem May 5, 2006, being that I hadn't taken my Xbox 360 out of the box I had it stored in. Xbox support offered to repair my box if I sent it in, so, I did. About a few days later I called in, and a Microsoft support rep. informed me that I was being sent a brand new. A few days after that I receive a note from UPS telling me they attempted to deliver my package and the next time and day they would attempt again. I then called UPS and asked for that package to be delivered to a UPS store so I could pick it up the next day.
Once I received my package, I attempted to play on the Xbox 360. And it worked for a few minutes, but it still had the same problem. It would freeze up. I even attempted to play a brand new game - no luck. So, I called to report the trouble again, and this is when I find out that it isn't my original box - it's a 'refurbished' one! It turns out this is how Xbox 360 support handles their repair issues. They send you a box someone else paid for and reported problems on, and they CAN NOT track or tell you where your original box is. After arguing with a supervisor about locating my original box, I agree to send the second Xbox 360 in for repair, since I have no choice - it doesn't work.
So, I wait for another Xbox 360 to be sent to me, hoping I get one that works. On, Saturday July 15, 2006 I search the UPS tracking number I was given by a Xbox 360 support rep. and on the UPS website it says my packaged had been delivered at 11:47A.M. on July 13, 2006. I now call Xbox 360 support to ask them about it, being that I DID NOT RECEIVE A PACKAGE. They escalate my trouble report so they can investigate where my package is, but it's been over a week and they have not contacted me. I've called and asked what the status is and they have nothing to say to me, except We're looking into it, but it'd be better if YOU contact UPS to find your package. It's July 23, 2006 now, and I still haven't heard from them. Each time I've called in they've just given me the run around. I'm out of patience and an Xbox 360.
$432.89 - cost of Xbox 360, Microsoft will not refund this amount nor exchange for a new or working Xbox 360
