We also purchased a 42 inch flat screen from Walmart in 2008 (seems to be a trend here!) that also started turning itself on and off by itself and just hung up with Philips with no luck. When my husband told the girl, "You would think that an $800 TV would last more than three years," her response was "Yeah. You would think so!" I have unplugged the TV because of the numerous complaints about it catching fire but at what point does an investigation open and something get done about this?

Same issues. I have a 47-inch TV made by Philips. It was going black/no picture, but sound. I spent 80 dollars at a repair shop and they put in a new flux capacitor (yes, it sounds like something named out of the Back To The Future movie). With that replaced, it was good for 2 months. Now, the same issues and this morning, even worse with sizzling and cracking in the back of the TV, the smell of burning and the TV continuing to go out.

We purchased a 47" LCD flat screen television 3 years ago at Wal-Mart for $800.00. I have been very happy with it until recently. About 3 months ago, the screen started going black while watching it, but the sound would stay on. You could turn it off and listen for it to reset and then turn it back on and it would work sometimes. Then, it got worse and would take several tries before it would stay on so you could watch it. We had it mounted on the wall in our sunroom for the family to watch. We just recently moved it to the bedroom because of the aggravation of trying to keep it on long enough to watch it.

Tonight, we turned it on to watch it and it began smelling like plastic burning and smoke was coming out of the back at the top of it. We immediately unplugged it so it would not catch on fire. What a stinky mess in my house. I am so frustrated with this product and will never purchase another Phillips product again. You would think with all the complaints I have read in this consumer affairs report that Phillips would have to stand behind their products, with so many people having the same problems all over the United States. I just thank God that it did not catch my home on fire.

I bought a Phillips 42" LCD TV from Sam's Club 3 years ago. I was watching it yesterday and it suddenly shut off and a red light started blinking. I unplugged it, waited a few seconds and plugged it back it. The green light came on and it started clicking like it was trying to turn on. All of a sudden, it started smoking. I quickly unplugged it and called Phillips. They told me that since my warrant was up, I had to call a local repair agent. They then offered to sell me a refurbished TV for $450.00. No thanks. Obviously, Phillips can't make quality products and I will never purchase their inferior products ever again.

I am elderly and not that computer savvy, they have been no help at all. My TV is only 2 years old and I paid a lot of money for this product. It should last more than two years at the price I paid. I bought this product because of the name, I thought it would be top of the line quality. Something should be done to let people know this name no longer means quality.

Well basically after two years of owning my 50inch Philips plasma, it decided to just go blank no picture just sound from time to time, very disappointed due to the price of $1600, was and is a lot of money to pay for great service. It used to be that you could buy television and it would last for years. Seems like technology and these corporations are learning how to get over on innocent trustworthy consumers that believes in certain companies and brand.

Honestly very disappointed. Now what do I do with no way of repairing because it cost too much for a single mother? The year warranty is up and so what am I to do? When I call repair companies they are wanting at least $500-800 just to replace the Y supply motherboard that burnt out. Wow makes you not want to buy anything nowadays.

I purchased a TV in July of 2007, a 63" plasma to be exact. The warranty has expired. I had a tech come out to fix it at a cost $435.00. The same day, the TV went out again. The tech returned; after diagnostic test, found out the the panel was defective and was the result of the parts replaced failing. The part needed is no longer available. The thing is that after 3 years of use, the TV actually broke in May of 2010 but I couldn't afford the repairs. Now I can't even if I could afford (be dumb enough to pay) the cost of the panel, considering that I could replace it these days for about $2000. My gripe is with no options to have it repaired, I feel it is a responsibility of Phillips to replace it at little cost with a like size TV. I'd even be willing to pay for a new TV of greater size if I could at least get a coupon, discount or some kind of credit for my TV. I feel as if I bought a lemon, seems like a day after the warranty expired, it broke and there's no way to repair it, so now I have a 300lb x 63" x 36" x 5" paper weight.

When I complained that a TV should last longer than two years, I was told again there was nothing they could do. I really think they are having some kind of problem with these TVs and they should have a recall of them!

I will never purchase any Magnavox product again! I have never been treated so badly by a company before--it's like they could care less about the consumer. When I told him I was reading a lot of complaints about their product, I was told that "anyone one can say anything, that doesn't make it true". I said why would people take that time just to lie about a product they purchased from Magnavox?

I purchased a new 40" TV in late February 2011. From the start, the picture was really pixelated and there was a "roaring type of sound" that would fade in and out. I decided that I could make do with this to avoid the hassle of having to return and exchange. Then, just this past week (October 2011), the thing went haywire. The input channels started constantly changing, which made watching anything impossible. I thought maybe the TV was just hot or had a temporary spaz, so I got up and manually shut it off and turned it back on.

When I turned it back on, there was all these different colored vertical lines and a spot in middle of the TV down at the bottom that looked like something had broken internally. Being that it was past 90 days since purchase, I couldn't take it back to the store. So I called Philips directly. After explaining in-depth several time to several different operators, they didn't know what to do and had to refer me to a higher up who would have to call me back in no more than 2 business days. Late on day 3, I received this 2-day call. I was given a number for a local repair technician (when I asked for directions, they informed me that they didn't have an actual address for this guy! What kind of business practice is that?).

We then took the TV to this guy because we really had no other choice unless we wanted to pay out of our own pocket for repairs. This guy decided that it has had impact damage and forwarded info on to Philips. I was on the couch watching the thing when it went crazy, so I refused to accept that it had impact damage as I know I didn't hit it or my newborn child, who was also here at that time. They basically called me a liar. Why offer a 12-month warranty if they won't honor it on something that was only 8 months and still had 4 months left on "supposed" warranty?

On Sept 30th, smoke spewed out from behind the TV that filled the whole room while emitting a plastic burning smell. I quickly turned of and unplugged the TV. I was totally shaken as I've never heard nor encountered such a scary thing, realizing this could have easily caught fire. I called Philips customer care center who ironically, was not willing nor able to give any service or care. Instead they gave me a service center around my neighborhood to contact informing me that I'll have to pay for the onsite diagnostic visit. I had no choice but to do that just to find out what the problem was and paid $85 for that onsite service.

When the technician opened the back of the TV, the power supply and cable were all burnt. The technician was shocked to see the horrible damage. He took pictures and said he will give us an estimate for the repair which came out to be $627.28. Since it is no longer under warranty, I am now stuck with a damaged TV that I paid $1699.99 for just barely three yrs ago. This is extremely outrageous and irresponsible of Philips to knowingly continue to manufacture and sell these units instead of recalling or replacing these defective/cheap parts when so many consumers have similar complaints.

I've contacted Costco where I bought this TV from asking them not to sell any Philips TVs because they are a fire hazard that are waiting to burn the house down, as well as kill people. Like many others, after 2 years, the TV has black screen. Philips will accept no responsibility. The customer service said that they have no record of this happening, unless it's a cable box. That is obviously untrue as a class action lawsuit just occurred in NJ. Is there one happening in PA? They said I must use an outside service provider as the warranty is up.

I have the same problem, like many people out here, with my 47" Philips LCD TV (Model: 47PFL3603D/27). It is not even three years old and the TV has started smoking. Please be careful in buying Philips TV. They know about this problem and do absolutely nothing about it. The problem is with the power board, and from what I am reading here, many people have the same problem.

I was lucky that my wife was awake when the smoke started to come out of the TV and she unplugged it. If it wasn't for my wife, I don't even want to think what could have happened. This power board is being used in many model of Philips TV and it should be recalled as soon as possible. This TV is dangerous! if you have one, then don't ever leave it unattended! Don't ever fall asleep while watching Philips TV!

The best part is that when I called Philips support center, the lady acted like this is normal with Philips TV. She even asked me if I plugged it back in. I don't know what part of "a smoke is coming out of my TV" she did not understand. What a terrible TV--and even worst customer service. I bought a Magnavox VCR/DVD player/recorder back in May of 2010. About 6 months later, the VCR wasn't working. It would eat the tape. Every time we took the tape out, it would be wrapped around something in the VCR. Then about 3 months after, the VCR would only play the tapes for about 10 minutes then pops the tape out, plus the tape would be wrapped around something. So in about March of 2011, I called Magnavox to see if they could do anything about this situation and the gentleman said there was nothing they could do. He refused to even suggest a place to take it for repairs.

I've had VCRs and DVDs over the years. My VCRs always lasted at least 4- 5 years. I never had such a horrible experience with a VCR or DVD. VCRs and DVDs should last longer then 6 months. Plus having your representative tell me that I have to call around for a repair shop, was on the utmost unprofessional act.

I can't believe that a big well known company has such poor policies.

Looks like I am like many other folks that have filed a complaint about Philips TVs that have screens going black. I purchased a Philips 47-inch TV, model 47PFL3603D/27 and serial number YA1C0817011535, from Walmart just over 2 years ago (no longer under warranty). For just over a year now, occasionally the screen goes black. I quickly learned that by turning the TV off and back on again, the problem would correct itself, sometimes for weeks, sometimes for seconds.

Today, the screen went black and while black, I heard electrical arching which was immediately followed by a plastic burning smell. I immediately unplugged the TV from a surge protector. I, too, called Philips at 866-310-0787, spoke to Tyrell (call reference number 651089) and explained the situation to him.

I was offered to purchase a refurbished TV, which I declined, as he agreed he wouldn't be able to tell me the history of that particular TV. He told me since my TV was not under warranty, there wasn't anything he could do. I explained about the numerous complaints on file here and his response was that the overall number of complaints about this problem was below 1% of the TV's sold of this kind. Therefore Philips doesn't intend to take any action to correct this problem.

I, like many folks, can't afford to immediately go out and spend $1,000 on a new TV. Not in this economy. The fact that others have had this screen blacking out problem, which seems to transpire into eventually catching on fire, gives me concern. Luckily for me, it didn't actually catch on fire. It just arched and smelled of burnt plastic, as my 2 young children were watching it at the time.

Obviously, Philips' disregard for my household safety and that of my family, not to mention their making a product that is seemingly a 2-year disposable item (too expensive to be disposable), will prevent me for purchasing their brand of TV again.

I purchased a 42" Phillips flat screen TV eight months ago and now the volume goes up and down on its own. It is very aggravating when watching anything. I have to have the volume control in my hand to constantly readjust to hear it. And when the baby is in the room, there is always a possibility of her waking up if the volume suddenly comes up on its own!

This is the second TV I have gotten from Walmart. Besides the waste of money, gas and time, how about just putting a quality product out there? I agree with the person who said that they knew of someone with a 60-year old TV. I still have one that's 25 years old. By the looks of it, Phillips is just aligning itself with the same lack of values and principles many people have today about marriage--it's disposable. I bought this TV because 33 years ago, when I was stationed in the Netherlands, Phillips used to be a quality name. What happened?

After that, the said TV set was checked in Philips service center at Raj Nagar, Ghaziabad and it was found that its LCD screen was faulty. I was offered four options from the service center to get a new TV set in place of this faulty LCD TV. They assessed the value of the faulty TV as INR.44495/-(50% of the Purchase Bill) and proposed the following offers as replacement:

    1) 42" LED TV Model:42PFL4755/V7 Cost Rs.62999/-( Difference of price Rs.18495/-)
    2) 42" LED TV Model:42PFL5555/V7 Cost Rs.62999/-( Difference of price Rs.18495/-)

    4) 42" LCD TV Model:42PFL5505/V7 Cost Rs.49990/- (Difference of price Rs.5495/-)

After accepting this offer for the LCD set at serial no. 4 on phone, I approached SBI bank for issue of Demand Draft in favor of "P.E.Electronics Ltd." on 29/04/2011 and submitted SBI DD No.293908 dtd 30/4/2011 along with the details of Purchase Bill etc. to Mr. Arun ** at address: ** after a telephonic talk with Mr. N.K. ** (**) and Mr. Abhishek ** (Mobile: **). After several inquiries from Customer Care and service center, finally, I was asked by Mr. Abhishek ** that I have to pay approx. Rs.22000/- extra to get the selected LCD TV set in question. When I asked him to give me the name and email address of concerned Philips India's officer who was authorized to redress my grievances on my email, Mr. Abhishek ** did not bother to respond back.

Since last four months, all my requests for replacement of the TV are falling on deaf ears in Phillips India. Anyhow, I contacted Mr. Vivek ** Product Manager Service Philips at PE Electronics Ltd. in Mumbai on 30-07-2011. He offered me to take 32" TV instead of my 42" LCD TV set on 10-08-2011 and said that earlier prices quoted were miscalculated. This new offer, after 4 months of mental harassment, is not acceptable to me because I have already paid what Philips had asked me to pay earlier, and I am not at fault at all. I believe that time has no replacement in one's life and hope that you respect that.

Further, I requested for Chief Operating Officer Mr. Neeraj **, PE Eletronics Ltd. with a copy to Mr.Vivek **, Product Manager-PE Electronics Ltd, through email, to look into my case personally and arrange to sort out my problems with favorable action as early as possible, but both the officers of Philips (PE Electronics Ltd.) did not bother to respond on this issue and launched "Philips Television attractive consumer offers this monsoon 2011. With the purchase of one Philips Television, you get another TV absolutely free?" which is another way of attracting buyer/consumers.

I am away from New Delhi up to 28th August 2011. After reaching New Delhi, I will definitely approach Consumer forum and appropriate platform for redress of my grievances.

I purchased a 47" flat screen Phillips LCD TV from Wal-Mart along with the two year extended service/warranty plan. These two items cost over $1400.00. The purchase was made in June 2008. While still under the extended warranty plan, the television screen is now going black every five minutes. The TV seems to shift modes and make popping noises when I turn it off and back on again. I called the number provided 877-968-6391, and Wal-Mart informed me that I was still under their extended plan for one month and they scheduled an appointment for me with Sartor TV.

They provided me with a phone number for Sartor TV if I had any questions. I stayed home from work the day that Wal-Mart scheduled the service for me. I became concerned when half of the day passed and no one showed up. I called the number that Wal-Mart provided me with and spoke with the folks at Sartor TV who said that they had no appointment for me! I called the number to the Wal-Mart service department again. The rep seemed concerned and patched me through to someone at Sartor TV who asked me about the problems with my TV, confirmed that he was ordering parts and would be out on Saturday (my day off), to make the repairs. I called the Friday before the scheduled date of repair and the folks at Sartor TV took my number and promised to call me back. They didn't. I called the folks at Wal-Mart again and asked to speak to a supervisor.

I wanted to take my TV back to the store for an exchange equal to the value of the TV that I purchased from them. The supervisor "Jeff" told me that this was not going to happen. It simply was not an option. I would have to let them get someone out to repair my TV. I told Jeff that I wanted him to call Sartor TV and confirm my "appointment" for Saturday. Jeff put me on hold for about 30 seconds, said that he tried Sartor TV and that he got the machine. I asked Jeff for an address where I could send a certified letter of complaint. Jeff refused an address and said that he could take the complaint. I hung up with Jeff and called Sartor TV again. I got them on the phone. They told me that parts had come in but that they did not have me on the schedule!

I spoke with Jacob at Sartor who then promised that he would call me this Saturday (5-21-2011) to schedule a time to come on Monday. I highly doubt that he will! I truly believe that it is Wal-Mart’s intention to deprive me of my money or a lasting repair. I believe that they are working together with Sartor TV to delay the repair to my defective TV as long as possible, then make a poor repair, leading to a faulty product that will, by the time that it is repaired, be out of warranty. Someone please advise me where to go and who to talk to! Phillips has had thousands of defective LCD TV's, and Wal-Mart appears to desire to be out from under their paid responsibility to ensure that I have a working television.

It started having the screen black out problems a couple of months ago. This week, we turned on the TV and we heard many popping sounds (like small fireworks), and we saw fire sparks shooting out of the bottom of the TV. Smoke was billowing out of the top. We immediately disconnected the TV from the power source and cable box. We called the Customer Service number located on the website. The two reps I spoke with offered a repair on our current TV or a refurbished TV if a repair would not work. I do not want to keep a TV in my home that has previously shot out fire sparks and smoke, as they cannot guarantee that the problem will not happen again. Also, without knowing the history of the refurbished TV, there is no way to guarantee that it would not catch fire either.

I tried to talk with the reps about this, but they apologized and said that the manufacturer's warranty had run out. My question was, "Are fire sparks and smoke a normal feature of the Philips TV?". The rep answered no (of course!) and so I explained that I wanted to speak with someone at the company that would stand behind this product and make it right, without putting a potential fire hazard back in my home. The reps would only give me a PO Box for the Complaints Department and would not provide me with another phone number or address of a Philips executive willing to stand behind their product. A television that has fire sparks and smoke is not safe to have in any home!

This is my second email. The first one was over 10 days ago. They even sent me a replacement unit on Jan 10, 2011 which I was told by Kayla when she received my necessary $1.00 to a credit card, so she could expedite sending out the replacement 8100 Philips sound bar. I had recently found out it had a production date of 2008. Now Philips is saying that they don't even have to honor the 1-year warranty attached to the equipment because I purchased it from a different merchant, which is amazon.com who I have done business with for the last 2 years and always had great customer service in every aspect.

Probably you have never heard of such a statement being made that the warranty doesn't follow the item, it follows if you only bought it direct from Philips and not any of the hundreds of retail stores that stock their electronic equipment for retail. Anyway, getting past that, after the 10 days, I now have waited 8 business days and did not receive any item from Philips. I called and got Kayla on the phone. She apologized and felt embarrassed that 3 other agents told me the package was sent and was stuck in Georgia from bad weather, that now being the 20th, she is sure it was put through with the correct code and no doubt in the world that I would not have it in 5-7 business days again. I waited on the 7th day again and no package. By this time, I have made several other phone calls to the customer service people, inquiring about the whereabouts of my sound bar.

I also hand written a letter to Philips headquarters on the 20th, to tell them how misled I was about a simple return under the given one-year warranty that was stated in the paperwork when purchased. But I got no reply to either of the two phone numbers I gave, nor to my email address or my return address. And now I got Kayla a third time. Now corporate sent an email to Kayla stating that they sent it to me. It took another 7 business days and when the UPS came to my door, instead of the original package, I received a one foot by one foot box weighing approximately 2 lb. I knew something obviously was wrong and I didn't want to refuse it because I would have no proof to discuss what I received. I went online to check the 8100 Sound bar with separate woofer, It costs $300.00 to $500.00 depending on the retail store. The other model that was sent to me is very identical and comparable. And that unit, which is MODELHSB2351/F7B, costs $50.00 up to around $280.00.

Anyway, the next day after receiving the item, I called back Kayla and spoke to her and her boss William **. Even though they were both what appeared to be trying to help me, they said they don't make my model anymore. This also sounded wrong, because Philips own personnel and many retailers say otherwise, and nothing has replaced it. Philips is just saying, even though every review on the 8100 was fantastic, that corporate would not even try to get me a refurbished or used one that works. They are asking me to take it or leave it and that they did not have to give me anything, and they were just being nice.

I purchased a Sound Bar Model 8100 for just under $300.0. Within the one-year warranty, six months after working, the DVD player stopped working altogether. I called and left many messages, but got no return call. I had gotten ill and have been in and out of Quakertown St. Lukes Hospital for chronic disease problems so I could not keep giving attention to this. Two months after the DVD stopped working, the place that you plug in your cable to connect to the television for the sound would not hold cable anymore, and I had to tape it to work, but the tape kept falling off and lost its connection.

On the 10th of Jan 2011, I called Kayla and she spent 20 minutes on the phone so she could finally get $1.00 credited to my credit card so she could send out a replacement that should have gotten here in 5 to 7 business days. On the 20th, nothing came. I sent a letter to the corporate office as I was told to and of course no reply, either by phone or mail. Then I called back twice at least every day. I got Kayla by chance again on the 20th. I was told the package was stuck in Georgia. So I called to the UPS in Georgia and was told that there was no package ever sent. Then when I got Kayla on phone again, she admitted to me that she put in the wrong code and it was never sent but she swore up and down that it was corrected on the 20th and for sure I would have it by 5 to 7 business days from the 20th. Well it's now Jan 31 and I still have no sound bar and to make matters worse, they, from day 1, has not been able to give me a tracking number because they said their shipping department is too busy to put one in the computer.

So now I'm told after approximately 20 phone calls that it has been emailed to corporate office. I just got off the phone after an hour with some very arrogant so-called manager and I said to let me speak to Kayla if she were there but he said no, that he's not going to transfer me to waste her time, that there's no point. I said it will make me feel better since he can't get me my working sound bar and he can't reach anyone, at least Kayla was trying to be helpful but the manager again said no.

I am not well, I don't need this kind of absurd customer treatment and to make matters worse I am on disability, $300.00 is a lot of money for me to have nothing, but a non-working product to show for it. I'm sure you will agree that this whole way of doing business is terrible and should not be allowed. It has been almost a month already. I really don't want to ever do business with this company again. At this point, I just need my refund as soon as possible so I can replace it with another brand of sound bar.

My $2000 42" plasma TV, less than 5 years old, developed horizontal bars approximately 4" wide with alternating snow over the picture in the background. I called the CS number from the manual and they tried to sell me a "reconditioned TV at a discount". I got the name of the closest "authorized" repair shop and took it 45 miles for estimate for repair. He called back a couple of days with an estimate of almost $400 for a couple drives out. I declined repair, picked up the unit and then tried to get repair schematic but Philips does not have it available. I think their "service group" is a private party contracted to intercept their complaints as they seem totally unaware of any Philips connections. The online "certified repairmen online" will take your question and answer it for a fee if you provide your credit card info in advance. So basically, I have a $2000 piece of junk that cost me over $400 per year to use and no way of accessing info from Philips to try and fix it myself.

The LED light blinks 6 times in a row and the TV will not turn on. We have been told by Philips customer representatives that there is a problem with the capacitor and service board. This will be more than $300 to fix, not including the cost of us renting a car (we live in Manhattan and do not have a car). They also offered us a used Philips TV for $400, which is hysterical. New flat screens are only about $400 with companies that have better reputations. Why would we buy a used Philips TV if ours only lasted 3 years?

We called Philips to see if they would back their product and they said no. If it's past the one year warranty, there was nothing they could do. They said it was probably "wear and tear".

Solution: Buy new TV every 80 days! Before the 90-day in-store warranty goes out on your new flat screen, take it back, and trade for another of the same price. This is completely legal, and breaks no rules at Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc. If this actually happened, we would see Philips become more socially responsible than ever, resulting from a drastic change in sales in the U.S. And remember what U.S. spells: "No one takes advantage of US".

They went on to say that it would take about 20 days for the replacement to arrive. Well upon its arrival, I discovered that they had sent me an old scratched up used system to replace the 2 and 1/2 month old one that I purchased brand new which by the way did not have a scratch on it.

When I called about it, their rep told me that it was in their warranty that they could replace a relatively new product with a used one. That to me is totally unacceptable so the fight is on. Last month, the TV stopped coming on altogether. I contacted a Philips’ authorized dealer (Sears) and they came out for a fee of $106.00 and looked at the TV. I paid for the part which made my total that day to $285.00. When Sears came back to put the part, the TV still does not work. I was refunded the additional money for the part and Sears kept the $106.00.

Sears contacted Philips and was told that Philips no longer made the part. So essentially, I have a 42" plasma TV that looks pretty, but does not work. Philips offered to sell me a re-manufactured TV and a warranty for a little over $500.00. However, since I already paid for $767.00 for warranty (that eventually expired), $500 for a repair, and an additional $106 for the Sears’ service, I was not prepared to shell out any more money for this defective TV. Philips should do the right thing and have a recall to provide some sort of financial relief for their customers.

The movie stopped and would not eject. After cutting it off and unplugging it, it would still not play or eject the movie. I ended up having to take the DVD player apart to get the movie out. I am very unhappy about this. I've never had a problem with Phillips products, and with this DVD player being used so few times and tearing up, I will not purchase anything else from them.

It worked well (with minor glitches, like periodically going black, as if shut off, for 5 secs or so, but would turn back on) until now. The screen went black, sound and ambient light stayed on for a bit, but both are now out. A red blinking light near the power indicator light is the only sign of life from the set. In less than one month, I had a problem with the speakers, so I returned the TV to Sam's and exchanged it for the same model. I received a refund at that time since it was reduced on sale. The price was now around $1200.00. I haven't had any problems until now. The screen is black and it flickers. The sound is perfect.

I called the toll-free number for troubleshooting and spoke with Brandi. After explaining my problem to Brandi, she asked me to unplug the TV which I did, and after a few minutes, she asked me to plug it back in. After following her instructions, the TV came on but the picture was still not very bright. Brandi then informed me that the only thing for me to do now is to purchase a certified remanufactured TV for $700.00. I told Brandi that was very poor customer service. I asked her for her last name or badge number and that I would like to speak with the top person in charge in her department. She informed me that she does not have a badge or ID number, she cannot give me her last name, and she cannot tell me what state she is in for security purposes. I told her that I would like to take this to someone higher than her and I would like to give as much information possible. She gave me an address in Stamford CT to write my complaint.

I insisted on speaking with a manager, she then told me that she can get a supervisor. That is when Sean ID# ** came on the line and repeated the same information that Brandi gave me. The only difference in speaking to Sean was that he gave me both his ID and Brandi's ID. He apologized for her and said that he did not know why she told me she could not give me an ID#, and offered me a certified remanufactured tv that was less expensive. He offered the certified remanufactured tv for $640.00 plus $40.00 shipping plus I have the option of purchasing an extended one year warranty. I did not even bother to listen to the price of the warranty. I could not believe what I was hearing. I asked Sean if Phillips was deliberately making TVs to last only two years so that they can keep making money from the consumers. I also asked Sean if he thought that the company would stay in business after treating their customers in this manner.

In March 2007, I bought a 50" Philips Plasma TV for over $2,150 at BestBuy. For an additional $350, I bought the extended 4-year warranty. I am glad I did. From the time I bought the TV, it occasionally goes "green screen" and it has to be turned off and back on several times. Very annoying. I sometimes have to walk away and come back 15 minutes later to try again.

Sometimes the TV re-boots on its own in the middle of a program you are watching. Quite annoying too. A couple of weeks ago, the TV started to not turn on. Red blinking LED in front. The only thing that seemed to have an effect was to unplug the power cord from the back, wait, then plug it back in. Also to turn on, keep the RC power button pressed for 10 seconds seems to have an effect.

At that point, I had not yet looked at my BestBuy invoice, and thought I was out of warranty. I called Philips, but they refused to give me the error code that corresponds to the red LED blinking pattern. "You can find that on the Internet" they said. After two hours of search, I found the Service Manual for $12 at one place and for $5 at another. Fortunately, Best Buy honored the extended warranty since it was not 4 years yet. Best Buy sent a technician and got a brand new power supply board for the TV. The Best Buy service receipt shows the new power supply board to cost $975 from Philips. This is shocking to me since I can get a new 50" Plasma for approximately that much.

I will make sure I tell everyone I know and see in any electronic store, family and anyone going to buy a new TV. If you buy Phillips that it would be a costly mistake. Word of mouth gets around Phillips. Shame on you Philips.

My problem was the TV making a clicking noise and shutting off. Making attempts to turn on and off worked for a few nights but was short lived. The attempts and getting a picture lasted only 3 maybe 4 times before the set went black. After reading most of these blogs, my only solution to this problem is try to do what Jeff of MI did in his (blog) August 29,09. I will attempt to take the back of my set off and check to see if any of the capacitors are bubbled up or leaking. What have I got to lose? This try might be a lot better then spending the money on another costly TV, which in today's economy I cannot afford. Another $1200 hard earned dollars. I think not. As far as Phillips is concerned (which they are not) I will never buy another.

Back in the day, I had one RCA lasted 10 yrs and another lasted even longer 20 yrs. Philips is out to screw the consumer that is self evident as to all the complaints i have just read. I will contact the Better Business Bureau. This is plain and simple Phillips fault in bad engineering and design. It almost seems like they are doing this on purpose to get you the consumer to buy another. "Not" me. I will follow this through as far as i can. Shame on you, Phillips. Shame on you.

If anyone has started a class action suit please by all means include me. If I am successful at fixing my set I will post back what I did and how I did it, as Jeff In MI did. Thank you, Jeff. I hope you have someone that reads these complaints, Phillips. Have a recall. Do something for Phillips' sake because I see this brand and company going out of business and not a minute to soon. On March 31, 2008 my husband and I purchased a 42" Philips LCD flat screen television [Model # 42PFP5332D/37 Serial # YA1C0748014948]. We selected Philips specifically because of the company's long-standing reputation and quality of products. My husband is from the Netherlands and the company is "Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V." which bears the *royal* seal of approval - Koninklijke translates to Royal. We registered the product with Philips immediately following installation.

In March of this year, approximately two years from the date of purchase, the television began making a clicking noise upon being powered on. The first time this happened, the screen turned on after about 10 seconds or so. As time has passed, the amount of time between powering the television on and the screen turning on has increased to approximately 20-30 seconds. Today (August 27, 2010), when the television was powered on, the clicking lasted for approximately 10 minutes before the screen came on.

An online search revealed that this is apparently a huge issue with Philips, and customer dissatisfaction with the products is intense based upon Philips' customer service's inability or refusal to assist with repair or replacement of their products. When I called customer service, I spoke to a woman (she did not provide her name) who took my information, and the serial and model numbers. I was then informed that my model is out of warranty. I was placed on hold and transferred to another department. A man named Andrew answered the call and I repeated the problem. I was advised similarly to the many complaints in this forum. Andrew advised me that it was probably an "issue within the TV itself, like a busted fuse."

I was offered a refurbished television at a "discounted rate", or assistance with finding a television repair specialist in my local area. I explained to Andrew that I had looked into Consumer Affairs and noted all of these complaints around the country...long-standing, similar complaints. Andrew asked me if I had been given a "software update" - and I told him, no I hadn't been, which is odd - since we registered our product directly with Philips online, and if there was a software update of which we needed to be made aware, then it was the responsibility of Philips as an organization to provide that information to its customers. I further told him that paying almost $1000 for a product that goes kaput in two years - then being told by the organization that bears the product name that the only available solutions were to purchase a *refurbished* replacement at a discount or pay for the repair cost myself is unacceptable.

Andrew was polite and apologetic, and explained that there was little that he could do with an expired warranty situation. I asked him about the complaints regarding people who actually *did* purchase extended warranties and weren't having them honored...and complaints from people who purchased products from retailers such as CostCo or WalMart and not having their unexpired warranties honored because they didn't purchase directly from the company. I was not given an answer. I also provided Andrew with the case number of another complaint with a similar product that shows that this is something that Philips needs to address.

All of this appears to me to be a trend in the electronics industry as a way to get consumers purchasing large ticket items more frequently (such as is the case with cellular phones); however, large ticket items are chosen by consumers frequently with long-term use in mind. Two years does not qualify as long-term. The primary "economic damage" is that we paid $998 for a product that proved to be defective within two years. The "solution" that we chose to implement is to leave the television turned on 24-7, suspecting that if it *is* a fuse, then powering the television off and on will exacerbate the problem we're having. That said, we're also concerned that by leaving the television on, we'll eventually overheat it. Further, leaving the television on has the secondary result of increasing our utility costs with the electric company.

I called Philips customer service, who said it needs service. It was under warranty but Philips said since it was purchased from a retailer and not direct from Philips, they would not honor a warranty.

I have made many calls to customer service about this, including calls to so-called supervisors. I find it ridiculous to think that a company will refuse to honor a warranty if you buy their product in good faith but from a retailer. If so, what is the point of offering a "warranty" on the product? After this silly experience with Philips customer service, I will not buy Philips products again, unless they contact me and make this situation right.

We have a Philips 42' LCD TV model #42pfl7422d/37 purchased new December 2008. I now have no picture but do have sound. Seems Philips is quick to offer me a re-manufactured for $490. There is obviously an abundance of people who have had the same issue. This TV has not even made the three year mark. Like many of you I have 4 other TV's all over ten years old without issue. Why would I buy another TV from Philips? No way. I'm sure many of you feel the same way. Shame on you Philips.

I purchased a brand new PHILIPS 42" digital widescreen flat TV, Model #42PFL5432D/37E in September of 08. I noticed some time ago that upon changing channels, the TV would lose the bottom half of the screen and the picture would be completely crunched at the top of the screen. The only thing that would fix it was turning the power off and back on. I had been looking online for similar issues and resolutions to no avail. Today my TV was off and I decided to sit down and watch for a while. When I turned the television on, it turned right off again after a few seconds. So I tried again and the problem wouldn't go away. The entire day has gone by now and the issue seems to be permanent.

I called Philips and explained the issue and all I was offered was a similar "refurbished" model at a discounted price or the number of a local repair shop that I could take the television to (at my own expense). This is hardly a solution, in fact, this sounds like me solving my own issue instead of Philips working with me to solve the issue. After reading several forums today, including one on this site, it seems that there are many people having the same issue with Philips products and, in most cases, the same model that I have. I am wondering how many complaints it takes before Philips stands up as a company and recalls their faulty products. They seem to be on the cusp of losing a ton of customers who at one time were very loyal.

Call me silly, but I buy everything Philips just because I share the name and like the idea of having my name on all my electronic equipment and more. Now it seems that they are ruining my name and their reputation at the same time. If anyone knows how to get the BBB involved along with Consumer Affairs to see if we can collectively find a solution to this issue. Please feel free to let me know and include me. I will definitely do all I can to assist everyone and anyone who is suffering the same as I am right now. Philips, if you are reading this, maybe this is an opportunity for you to step up and be "The Good Guy" by helping all your loyal consumers here before you lose us all forever. Keeping us and getting some good publicity for the act is certainly a worthy cause... at least I think so.

I typically don't complain about products/services. Rather, I prefer writing positive reviews about good ones. However, I think anyone considering purchasing any Phillips product should beware! If your looking to buy a product from a company where quality is policy, then don't purchase a Philips.

I purchased a 42" LCD TV in January 2008. In January 2010, the TV started clicking. It would randomly click in the middle of the night or middle of the day when the TV wasn't even on. It would also click when we turned it on and continue clicking for increasingly longer periods of time (up to 15 minutes at some times). I can't remember exactly what we paid, but it was in the ballpark of $1500. I wouldn't want to pay in the ballpark of $500 for something that would only last 2 years, much less 3X that!

After reading the complaints of other consumers who probably also purchased their televisions thinking Phillips was a reputable brand, I have no hope that Phillips will do the right thing and recall this failed product. This is the last product I will ever purchase from Phillips, and I will make sure friends/family know what they can expect from Phillips as well!

Buyer Beware! I Bought 3 19" Phillip flat screen TVs 2 years ago. Two are no longer working. The first sign of break down is when you turn it on, it makes a lot of scratchy noises and shuts on and off. This goes on for about 10 minutes before you can watch something on the screen. Today it never came back on. This happened to two of the three TVs purchased. I can hardly wait for the third to break down. I called Phillips and of course the 90 day warranty is expired, therefore they can't do a thing but offer you a refurbished TV at a discount.

Why would I want to buy another Phillips product at any cost? I would expect a TV to last at least 5 years. Or at least an offer to fix it. Back in the day, we had our TVs for 15 years. I also have a 46" flat screen by Phillips. I pray that I don't have the same problems. I will never purchase another Phillips brand TV. I expected a name like Phillips to stand behind their products. I hope this helps someone in choosing wisely when it's time to purchase.

I went to the place it was purchased only to find out I had to go through all of these steps. By calling Phillips, I have been told the part was found. I am not sure how they know what part is needed. No one came and looked at the TV. Then, I was told the part is on back order, and several delaying stories. The consumer does not have the option of bringing it back to the place of purchase for a refund. At this point, I want my money back to purchase a better brand. The reference number is ** at Phillips. The problem was escalated several times by the reps and I to Phillips Consumer Affairs. Still, there’s no resolution to the growing issue. What is annoying is the parts probably cost $2, while I pay $350 for labor.

So, at this point I will attempt to repair it, even though I know nothing about soldiering (if that's spelled right) or electronics. If no luck, then its time to put this on Craigslist for someone who wants to buy a 42" TV and fix it. Then I'll buy a 3D TV from a company other than Philips-Magnavox, probably Sony. That's right folks, not 9 or 10 just 5 and of course, the warranty ran out. They, as they so delicately put it, couldn't do anything about it.

To make a long story short, I should have known this piece of stuff wouldn't last when the first couple of years, the TV would automatically shut off in the middle of my video game. I needed to keep resetting the size and the sound would keep going in and out.

Okay, I figured I'd download the 2006 update but then the website wouldn't work, and the customer service rep can't contact them, he assumed they knew about it and that it would be fixed tomorrow. Tomorrow comes, I download the driver onto the USB stick do everything they say, to do reset and it's still giving me the no-update-found.

So, I called back customer service knowing what was coming, and sure enough he says, "Sounds like faulty board issue, we can't do anything about that, no warranty, call a technician and see if they even have the parts to your old TV."

I won't be getting charged up the a** for repairing this and having them send it to the shop, and I won't be purchasing anything from this company anymore.

I quit buying anything Hewlett Packard for the same reason, and I will not buy Phillips again either unless they admit their problem and take care of US customers (or former customers for their poor handling). I paid $1500 for a TV so that is approx $300.00 Will not ever buy a Phillips product again, and will tell everyone I know my experience. That is how Phillips will then take a new course. I wonder if their CEO can sleep at night?

Of course, I am the same as all of you. I got ripped of by Philips also. I hope something is being done. I have the blinking red light cause of bad circuit or something like that, that's what the repair man said. Of course, I wasn't going to pay cause he was going to charge $800. This is just **. Someone, take care of them please. I have owned a television for just 3 years. They shouldn't get away with this. Someone make them pay, I hope.

There is an active class action lawsuit for this problem (filed August 2006). Like many others, I have a completely non-functional, red-light-blinking Philips Plasma TV. I purchased my 50-inch TV factory refurbished by Philips in 2006 for $1100, and its black screen has been taking up space for the past couple of years.

I haven't heard back from this firm whether the class action suit has been settled, but I assume that it has or will be won by the plaintiffs. Hope this helps us get some well-deserved reimbursement.

My girlfriend brought me a Philips TV for Christmas at around $1700; it lasted 3 years and it only clicks and comes on when it wants to. What a waste of money! I did not know that this website existed. I am sure that she will go along in a class-action suit. If this was an automobile it would make Toyota look saintly! Why is nothing being done about this abuse? Why should people work hard for something and spend their hard earned money ($1700) for something that lasts a measly three years?

I have a 42" Phillips plasma TV. I have had it for several years with no problem. Recently it quit picking up one of the local antenna stations. I moved and adjusted the antenna to no avail. The VCR on the same antenna has no problem with the station. I went to the Phillips’ website and sent messages 3 times. No response. I called several times and could not get a live person. Finally, I reached a live person and was told my set is too old. Sorry, we have no answers. Either I will live without CBS channel in or will buy a new TV.

I bought a Philips 50PF9631D/37 Plasma television a couple years ago and it's already dead. I own 10 TV’s and this is my only Philips and it's the 2nd newest of my collection. Having contacted the Philips customer service number provided in the user manual multiple times to no avail, I sought out a solution on the internet. Soon I found that there are thousands of people over various websites such as this one with the same issue. The consensus is that Philips uses cheap capacitors in manufacturing. $2,500 of worthless circuitry.

I bought a Philips 42" plasma 2 years ago. It started clicking: no picture, no sound. I contacted customer service at Philips and as the TV was over a year old they said it was no longer under warranty. So $1200 for a TV that only lasted 24 months. This TV should be recalled. I will never buy another Philips product again.

I have owned 2 different 42" plasma TVs from Philips. The initial one was purchased for $2500.00 in 2004, and it died at the one-month mark. Since it was so recently purchased, it was readily replaced by Fry's Electronics. We also bought the extended warranty at the initial purchase, but since the TV died within the month, Fry's readily exchanged it for customer satisfaction.

The replacement set lasted for a little over a year, and then the picture wouldn't come on. No sound, no picture; just clicking as if attempting to turn on, blinking red lights and then nothing. Since we had the extended Fry's warranty, they replaced it with a comparable Samsung that only sold new for $900.00. But hey, we were happy we could get a replacement.

I moved to Manila, Philippines and bought a different Philips 42" plasma with Ambilight for 147,000 pesos ($3200.00 USD). This Ambilight was one of the coolest features ever. I can watch movies in the dark or without any room lights, and the Ambilight made the viewing very pleasurable on the eyes. After 1.5 year, horizontal black lines appeared and the upper and lower Y buffers had to be replaced. This cost me 10,000 pesos (a little over $217.00 USD).

The repair shop gave me a 6-month warranty, and only after 2 months of working perfect, the TV now has only a black picture. Sound works and I can toggle between the cable box and DVD player by memory, but there is no picture.

I am calling the shop tomorrow, but I have a feeling I will only get bad news. Lesson learned... Never buy Philips. I only have the delay of turning on, and then the clicking sound as if trying to turn on. The Ambilight will give a flash, but the picture was never restored. So in essence, this is 3 total 42" philips plasma TVs that have all died after working for barely a year. (in the initial case, only one month.)

I purchased a 42-inch LCD 1080 pixel TV from Target in New Ulm, MN on Feb. 6th, 2010, the day before Super Bowl. They were on sale for $500 because of Super Bowl. I had my boyfriend put it on his Visa credit card for I did not have my refund at that time. I brought the TV home. It worked great and there were no problems for four months. Then I went to sleep on the 5th of June with my 42-inch TV on, watching a show with my son. On June 6th, I woke up and my TV was off and making a screeching sound. It would not turn on with the controller or by pushing the power button on the TV. I unplugged it for half hour and plugged it back in. It did same thing. I took my Magnavox TV books out, got the number and called. They gave me a Ref. number. I called the next 4 or 5 days, asking what they can do. They said I still have on site warranty and parts warranty. The only place that could come to my place and fix it would cost $240.

I complained about how I have only had the TV for 4 months. I had spoken to a lady and she said to send in the receipt or credit card statement or bank statement. So I had my boyfriend call his credit card company. They faxed him the statement. It states on there the date of purchase and the amount of purchase. However, they got the fax statement and now said they can't use it. It's not their policy. It has to be receipt, even though the lady told me it could be one of the 3 things listed above. They told me to call Target and ask if they can get me a receipt. I have called Target twice in a week asking. They said both times they can't. It's been 90 days. I have told this to Magnavox company and they said it has to be a receipt. Now, they say I don't have on site warranty and tried to tell me I bought the TV 6 months ago. I know when I bought the TV because I bought it Super Bowl weekend.

I would expect better treatment and better service. One employee will tell me one thing and another one will tell me something else. I'm getting upset. I told them I looked up what could be wrong with the TV. It's the power supply board which, from what I have read online from other people who have purchased Magnavox. The same thing has happened to them and Magnavox will not fix it free of charge or exchange it if it has even been less than 6 months.

I would think a TV I paid $535 for because it was $35 tax on the TV would last at least 2 yrs. but no, it lasted 4 months. I'm a single mom of 3. I'm working at a $9 an hour job. I do not have money to fix what lasted only 4 months when I did not break it. They keep sending me to different people. They will not let me talk to a manager of any kind. They tell me they will fix it free of charge if I turn in a receipt or credit card statement or bank statement. I send one in and they still won't do it. They said their employee should have never said that about the credit card statement because they don't accept those as proof of purchase. I'm tired of being tossed around and told different things. I do what they say and I get nothing that they said. If you look on websites or google about their TVs, you can read all the complaints with people's TVs doing what mine did.

So my husband changed the blown conductors. After doing days of research, finding out that there are hundreds of different websites and blogs about Philips TV, having the same problem, he fixed it, but it was making a loud humming sound. So he opened it back up and found that more conductors had blown. So he changed these with perfect precision, and now the TV has sound but no picture. Spent $1,600 on this TV. Now I have to spend hundreds more to keep fixing it.

I purchased a 42" Philips Plasma TV two years ago for my parents and it has stopped working, exhibiting the same characteristics of clicking noises and a black screen that other owners have seen. I had heard that Philips was a good brand and have owned other Philips products over the years. After seeing all the complaints, I cannot understand why Philips is not offering a recall on these defective sets or extending the warranty period to allow for replacement coverage. Apple had a similar problem with low end capacitors in their iMac and eMac computers and Dell had similar problems but addressed them with their customers by extending warranty coverage.

I talked to Philips and they just stated that the warranty was expired so there was nothing they could do. I disagree. There is much they could do to satisfy their customers. Unless Philips does the right thing, I will fire the Philips company. In other words, they will never get any business from me again and I will be more than happy to share my experience with family and friends. Based on the number of complaints at ConsumerAffairs.com, a class action lawsuit should be the next course of action.

I bought the 50-inch Philips model 50PL9220D approximately 3 years ago. Fortunately, the first time it needed service it was under the one year warranty. The repairman suggested I submit a second claim before the warranty ran out since it was likely to need service again. Needless to say, I did not, and it did. The TV now sits dark in the basement with the dreaded flashing lights. I was searching for a solution and came across this site. This does not look promising. It sounds like the only feature that is guaranteed to work is the one that tells you that the TV is broke! I bought this TV at Aaron's while trying to reestablish my credit after a bad period. I paid well more than the average price after financing and find it very frustrating that these inferior products can be sold without consequence.

I purchased a 50 inch Philips plasma TV 2 years ago. The mother board went out and there is nothing the company will do to help me offset the financial cost of this. I paid $1500 for a TV that should last more than two years. If this TV was disposable it shouldn't cost $1500. The repair cost for this is $800! It is almost cheaper to buy a new TV, not a Philips of course. I do not want to buy a new TV but I feel that spending $800 to fix a TV that will probably break again and receive no support from Philips is stupid. If there is anyway I can get compensation for the repair or cost of the TV, I would be interested in hearing about it!

I too have the same problem with my Philips plasma 42"; it does not turn on. What I discovered is that I have it connected to a power strip and if I turn the switch on and off several times, it will turn on. Sometimes, I would have to repeat this up to 20 times before it turns on. The steps that I use is first turn the TV on using the remote then the green light would illuminate. Then the red light would flicker. By this time the green light would be off. Count 3 red light flicker and turn the power switch off and on again. Just repeat this and your paper weight will turn on (if not connected to power switch just unplug and plug back into wall). I will never purchase another Philips/Magnavox product again. They probably knew about this problem and should address this.
