What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a treatment that straightens teeth using nearly invisible aligners that are clear, plastic and removable and have no wires or brackets. Invisalign customizes aligners to treat tooth crowding, overbite, underbite, crossbite, gaps and open-bite conditions in adults and teenagers.

Invisalign treatment lasts an average of 12 to 18 months, with costs similar to those of braces. Unlike other companies that make invisible braces, Invisalign requires regular, in-person visits to a doctor. Over 9 million people around the world have used Invisalign, according to the company.

How does Invisalign work?

Get started with Invisalign by taking the assessment on its website. You’ll answer questions about your age and teeth. If you're a good fit, Invisalign's Smile Concierge Team will help you schedule a consultation with an Invisalign-trained doctor in your area.

During this exam, you’ll receive a 3D scan of your teeth and a preview of your new smile. This is a good time to ask questions about how long treatment will last and how much it will cost. Bring your insurance card if you have coverage.

Once you approve the treatment plan, Invisalign creates your customized aligners with its SmartTrack material. You will need to wear the Invisalign aligners 20 to 22 hours a day and change them every one to two weeks. You’ll remove the aligners when eating, drinking, brushing your teeth and flossing. Treatment for teens may come with compliance indicator dots so parents know their children are wearing their aligners.

You can expect regular checkups with your doctor every four to six weeks. Treatment may require SmartForce attachments for complex tooth movement. Once you are done wearing the aligners, your doctor will likely recommend that you wear retainers. Invisalign recommends Vivera retainers.

How much does Invisalign cost?

Your doctor determines the cost of Invisalign treatment based on the complexity of your case and how many aligners you need. Invisalign states that the price of treatment is “about the same” as braces. It gives examples of quotes on its website ranging from $3,400 to $7,100.

Some dental and health insurance providers cover part of the cost of Invisalign. Before going in for your consultation, contact the provider to ask if it accepts your insurance. You can contact your insurer to check your benefits or ask your provider to do it for you.

Ask your doctor also about a monthly payment plan. Keep in mind that you may be able to use a health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA) to pay for invisible braces. Speak with your benefits manager and doctor’s office about using money from an HSA or FSA.

Invsalign FAQ

Can Invisalign ruin your teeth?

During your initial consultation with the Invisalign-trained doctor, ask about the risks associated with Invisalign. During treatment, it’s important to maintain good oral health, with regular visits to your dentist and the doctor monitoring your treatment. You’ll need to remove your aligners before eating or drinking and brush your teeth after every meal before putting the aligners back in your mouth. Follow your provider’s instructions and let them know if you’re experiencing any problems.

Can your teeth move back after Invisalign?

Yes, your teeth can shift back after treatment. Your doctor will likely recommend wearing custom-made retainers.

Is Invisalign a permanent fix?

Invisalign treatment is designed to provide lasting results. Your doctor may recommend wearing a retainer so that your teeth don’t shift back to their original positions.

Can you eat normally with Invisalign?

There are no food restrictions with Invisalign. You just need to take out the aligners before eating and brush your teeth before putting them back in.

Does Invisalign change your face shape?

It’s possible that Invisalign can change the shape of your face. If you have concerns or questions about how treatment can change your face shape, ask your dentist or orthodontist during the initial consultation; they may be able to show you specific areas of your face that can change.

Does Invisalign hurt?

You may feel some discomfort or pressure during the first few days of wearing new aligners. This is normal and a sign that the aligners are working. If you have persistent discomfort, you should let your doctor know.

Can Invisalign fix an overbite?

Yes, Invisalign can fix an overbite. Schedule a consultation with a doctor in your area to see how Invisalign can help.

Is Invisalign covered by insurance?

It depends on your insurance plan. In many cases, insurers cover Invisalign the same way they cover traditional braces. Insurance might cover a certain dollar amount or a specific percentage of the cost. To find out if your dental or health insurance covers Invisalign, contact your insurance company or ask your Invisalign doctor’s office if it will do a benefits check.

Still have questions?

Is Invisalign worth it?

Invisalign is a well-known alternative to traditional braces that's designed to be just as effective at correcting teeth in adults and teenagers. There are many appealing factors: The aligners are nearly invisible and removable, there are no brackets or wires and the treatment time is often shorter. Trained dental and orthodontic professionals oversee treatment. The cost is similar to the cost for braces, but Invisalign tends to be more expensive than other companies offering invisible braces. If you’re considering options to straighten your teeth, we recommend looking for a free Invisalign consultation with a doctor in your area.

I am very disappointed with my Invisalign treatment. After completing the process, I still have noticeable spaces between my teeth, and my top teeth are actually more spread out than they were before I started treatment. I invested a significant amount of time and money expecting an improved smile, but the final results did not meet my expectations.

Throughout treatment, I followed the instructions and wore the aligners as directed. Unfortunately, the outcome left me with gaps that were not present before and concerns about the overall appearance of my teeth. I would encourage anyone considering Invisalign to discuss realistic expectations and potential outcomes thoroughly before committing to treatment. Overall, I do not feel that the results justified the cost or effort involved.

Hi! I have been wearing Invisalign for 3 weeks now, so this is my third set of trays. I am very disappointed with the quality of my trays. So far, all three trays have had uncomfortable spots I have had to try to file or fix. The bottom of the set I am wearing now flares out so much behind my bottom teeth, that the underside of my tongue is completely cut up. It has only been one day and I don't know how I will make it another 6 days with this tray. While I am thrilled to be starting my Invisalign journey, the cost was substantial for me and I feel that my mouth shouldn't be cut up because of the inconsistent quality of your product. I opted for Invisalign because of your reputation. Please work on the quality of your product.

After pasting attachments, having teeth enamel sandpapered, then a yr later finding 3-4 teeth that were originally OK, are now a problem/ shifted. Now had to remove all attachments, take new impressions, have new attachments put in to 'revise/correct'. Dentist wanted to sandpaper my teeth even more. No, thank you!! Lots of work every day to maintain them. I should get paid for my time & effort, but paid A LOT OF MONEY for this obviously inaccurate, hit-and-miss product. Now have 3 more months to see if it will correct their mistake. I do not recommend.

I've been using Invisalign through an orthodontist for almost two years and on my third "refinement," we're hoping I'll be finished in another two months. I'm writing this review to caution others. There are definitely more cons than pros, and I'm wishing I had gone with traditional braces for the minor adjustments my teeth needed. For the first year, there was a lot of adjustment in all but my front teeth (which were the ones I wanted fixed), which my orthodontist told me to expect. After that first year, he told me I'd "REALLY start to see changes in the front." What I saw over the next four sets of trays was very slight movement toward what our goal was. Not a problem, he said, we have two periods of "refinements" that will take care of that.

Long story short, those two periods of refinements did zero toward the goal. I called Invisalign and got a loop of advertisements, then the call clicked off. The only other option was to use their provider line, which I couldn't, because I'm not the provider. I emailed Invisalign, through their website and directly, and got no response. For this next "refinement," he said I'd have to pay an additional $500, which upset me, so he said he'd work something out with the company. I'm now on my third "refinement," which entails five new sets of trays, wearing each set for fourteen days. He said if the first three sets don't complete the goal, the next three definitely will.

Looking at my trays, what I'm convinced of is this -- Invisalign's tactics include patients needing these additional refinements for a price. Looking at my trays, it's clear that the sets of refinement trays look exactly like past trays, and the feel of them in terms of pressure and seeing results corroborates that view. If I had any way to know this in advance, I'd have opted for traditional braces. I'd have been finished long before now, with a lot less frustration.

My Invisalign alignments' edges are very harsh and coarse .... It causes ulcers to my mouth and tongue edges at the point of contact. The orthodontist recommended that I use a nail file to smooth the Invisalign edges, but it does not work at all!? I will try to contact the manufacturer, it is very disappointed for me.

I truly feel that I was tricked into getting Invisalign, and it was an expensive disaster. My teeth were pretty straight from the 4 years of braces I had as a kid. However, my dentist told me "your teeth are getting shorter" because I clench and grind. Have tried all kinds of mouth guards and none worked. My dentist is good friends with the orthodontist and I should realized there was a conflict of interest. I went in with an open mind, and they blew sunshine up my butt for almost 8K. After 28 weeks of uncomfortable Invisalign (I don't think they emphasized how you will lisp and spit and how eating is difficult), they proclaimed "your teeth are in alignment"! But for the fact that my 2 front teeth overlapped (and they didn't before) and 2 of my bottom teeth sunk way down and 2 poked up and were loose! I looked a little **.

My dad, who let me know as a little kid that he sacrificed financially for my braces, was super pissed. I stated that I was not happy and they offered me regular braces for a year. Thankfully, the orthodontist practice did the right thing and didn't charge me additional money for regular braces. I have come to find out that Invisalign has many failures which your orthodontist will never tell you about. When my teeth looked way worse after Invisalign, one orthodontist stated "we tried to mess you teeth up so you would be our patient forever". I was not in the mood for sarcasm. This whole experience has been a nightmare. Please do research. I trusted my dentist's practice, who I have been seeing for 27 years. Huge disappointment.

Invisalign liners are wonderful concept that you can wear and people usually don’t notice that you have them. I have noticed that my top aligners do not come up to my gum line, like my bottom ones do. They re-took the scan and the new aligners came back the same way. I have a lot of space between the end of the liner and my gum on the top one, therefore it’s taking anywhere from 10 days to two weeks to go onto the next liner. So it’s going to take me much longer to complete.😞

Don't listen to the sales pitch. These things are horrible. Which I'm not going to complain about the dedication that they take, I am going to say how much they actually screw up your teeth. They maybe straighter after using, but your bite will be completely messed up. Invisalign makes not consideration to how your teeth line up/fit together top to bottom. I wore Invisalign for over 2 years. I would go in for my checks and be like ohh you are good, teeth are all straight and spaced, we will be getting your retainers. I stop them and say NO! We are not done. I would show them all these places where my teeth would be hitting when they didn't before. The hygienists would get all pissed at me and do new scans to send off to do more aligners. I ended up getting to the point where I was tired of arguing with them and said, "Fine, I'm done."

I have mixed feelings that I shouldn't have stopped fighting because maybe eventually I would get someone to listen and actually fix what I was telling them. Or could have just been more and more of the same. But the bad part, since I have done Invisalign, I have broken or chipped 3 teeth. And what would you know...spots that I had complained about hitting. It just frustrating to spend all this money that made my teeth worse. I think since you have these retainers in and you can't really close your mouth, you don't realize how badly your teeth are no longer fitting together. Don't be like me and end up with all these broken teeth.

Invisalign might just be the worst experience I’ve ever had. Before my treatment I have fine teeth. I was told by my dentist that it would only take 4 months to finish the treatment. Now here I am 9 months later and there is no end in sight. The first 2 weeks were the worst. It was almost impossible to get the aligners out of my mouth and eating anything was an impossible task. Chewing even a piece of bread was so painful I’d rather starve. They advertise that it’s invisible but really I am so embarrassed to smile with them on my teeth. My dentist put little grips on my teeth and they make my teeth look twice the size they actually are. I gave up and now I just wear them at night because I’m not fighting anymore. This whole experience has caused me so much pain, countless crashouts and hours of my life spent lying in a dentist’s chair. I would only recommend this to my worst enemy. I beg of you. Do not listen to your brainwashed dentists and stick to normal braces.

IF your teeth require minimal adjustment AND your dentist can guarantee you will only require one round (one year) of aligners, they may be worth it. Dentists have a financial incentive to recommend Invisaligners -- they usually don't work with just one round, which results in spending the initial $6,000 plus additional sets. These were NEVER meant for people with bad teeth. They're PLASTIC -- obviously they will never do the same work as a set of stainless steel braces. I've had decent results so far, but I still have far to go and I don't see how Invisalign will possibly fix the remaining issues -- almost positive I will end up needing regular braces after these--my teeth need to be pushed back in slightly and I will not allow my dentist to shorten/file my teeth.

My main complaints with these have to do with convenience and cavities. I have to brush my teeth 6-8-10 times per day. They form a canoe-shaped cover on your teeth which holds all the food and sugar up against your teeth until they get brushed. No matter how diligent you are, there will always be times when a sugary/starchy food is being pressed against your teeth for a few hours, which over time will cause cavities you normally would not get. They also require a sanitizing soak/treatment (I use diluted bleach or hydrogen peroxide, which are not recommended, but I know they kill/remove everything effectively).

If you don't remove them and sanitize them often, they begin to smell and cause foul breath. They have to be removed when eating, you can't chew gum (any gum, even sugar-free) because the plastics stick to all types of gum. Teeth shift back into place quickly when you remove the Invisaligners, so pulling them out for a couple of hours will make them sore for a few minutes again when you put 'em back in. I WISH I HAD GONE WITH TRADITIONAL BRACES. It seems that a large number of the dentists out there have no business installing Invisaligners. I noticed some people mentioned they received several months worth of aligners at once....My dentist was shocked to see those reviews.

I have to see my dentist at least every month/6 weeks for new buttons/adjustments. She constantly takes new photos/measurements and adjusts the snaps/buttons accordingly (included in the price). I've never received more than 6 weeks of aligners at a time. I will say I was lucky to have the dentist I have, but I still wish I had gone with traditional braces. These have cost me A LOT of time, and $6,000.00. And I think I'm only halfway done. :(

I was 70 years old when I started Invisalign. I have been in treatment for two years. I was tracking on time until the last two months now the orthodontist tells me that my teeth have gone backwards. I wear my Invisalign at least 15 to 20 hours a day and tried to follow this throughout the two years despite being in pain. I originally got them because I had an overbite and it was causing my bottom teeth to arc and I did not want to lose my teeth. Long story short I now have bone loss on my bottom front teeth and may have to have them pulled, which is probably what I should have done to begin with if the orthodontist had checked prior to providing Invisalign’s. I still have a bit of an overbite. So for me, the Invisalign did not work.

I have always taken care of my teeth and have had good dental care my whole adult life. I wish I had never done Invisalign and just had my bottom teeth, pulled, and had a bridge done instead because this is probably what I will have to end up doing anyway. I am out a lot of money and with my insurance the bridge will cost around $4000. The orthodontist has been really good about making new trays when I needed them and she is going to put in a permanent retainer to try to hold onto my teeth as long as I can. My advice if you are older, have x-rays done by your regular dentist for bone loss before you agree for treatment because the bone loss will get worse.

We were convinced that these were great for a teenager as an alternative for braces. They were great during treatment but have no replacement WHEN your teen loses their last set of aligners. They have no customer service to speak with directly, no ability to order replacement directly forcing you to go back to your orthodontist. Which for us escalated the issue because their horrible service (DocBraces) are requiring us to start the process all over again requiring thousands of additional dollars. My son’s teeth are now moving and no one will help. A complete waste of time and money.

Invisalign does a good job of straightening the top arch of teeth, and they do a good job of straightening the lower arc. But…they do not align the arcs. My bite is off on one side of my mouth, it is painful & extremely uncomfortable. When I mentioned this to my ortho, she was upset with my comment and all her associates backed away from me. I explained that my teeth were extremely sensitive and in pain all the time. This is one year after completing the regimen. She tried to convince me I was grinding my teeth and had TMJ, but I don’t. I tried to get her to fix it, she would not.

I felt very mislead about the process. Invisalign wants you to believe it is easy but they do not tell you what you may experience and that once finished, you have painfully tight mouth guard after they put permanent wire retainers on the top & bottom. Never once was it mentioned I would have to get permanent wire retainers until I showed up for the appointment. I HATE these wires on my teeth! I stopped wearing the painfully tight retainers after one year when my DDS told me my teeth should be rooted properly.

I am on week 33 of 99. I started with Invisalign at 60. My teeth have already straightened dramatically. My friends are already seeing an improvement. I just thought I would have my crocked teeth till the day I die. Unlike others, my crooked teeth didn't stop me from smiling big smiles. I always got compliments on my bright, contagious smile. Only through my teenage years it bothered me. I'm curious as to anyone else out there, how the change affected your sinuses and breathing. I know we hold a lot of emotions in our teeth and gums. I feel like my body is letting go of stored emotions in these areas. I have also been a mouth breather my whole life and I am having more moments of being able to breathe through my nose. I really have to work at this.

My hope is that it becomes easy once my teeth are where they should be. I practice breathing habits to assist a change. Some days are easier than others and I get frustrated with my body when it doesn't work. My palate is very high before I started and my hope is that as my teeth straighten and my jaw expands that the palate will also drop making nasal breathing easier.

My first scan gave me 19 sets, 21 total weeks, resulted in having to get another scan because my teeth ended up crooked. So I had to get another 19 sets, which came in about a month after the scan… After about 15 weeks into the new sets, my teeth were crooked again. So I had to get another scan and more sets. I have been waiting almost a month after the 3rd scan and meanwhile, my teeth are in the old set that doesn’t track correctly, getting more crooked. I regret ever getting Invisalign, and wish I hadn’t.

I'm on aligner 12 of 15. I can no longer close my teeth together or eat properly. My bottom front teeth are hitting my top front teeth. My molars no longer touch at all. As a result, my jaw joints are hurting. Invisalign didn't take into account my bite. While an orthodontist can adjust braces to correct your bite, Invisalign aligners are all made at the same time. There's no ability to adjust them. I had braces in the 1980s, but I did not continue wearing a retainer decades later. Invisalign was supposed to be a quick, easy fix to a mild problem. I now have a very serious problem to deal with. I wish I had never chosen Invisalign.

This is the biggest regret I have. I saved for years for Invisalign, like most, only to have weakened, discolored, and still misaligned teeth. The worse thing though is that following discontinuation of treatment, there is usually no provider that will help you going forward. There is an epidemic of abandonment in the field of orthodontics. They often will not even provide you with a basic cleaning and switching practices is not practical once treatment has commenced.

The reality is this: even if you take care of your teeth 100% perfectly, they will convince you that you did not take proper care while in treatment when something does not go according to plan. Ultimately, the experience resulted in a huge lack of trust for the entire dental profession, as I was that patient whose natural teeth and gums were almost 'perfect' including my health. This is what Invisalign has caused and I wish I never knew what was happening to patients where greed and surgery takes priority over healthcare and preventative measures.

InvisalignGo has many disadvantages and the risks outweigh the benefits. The product should be discontinued and there are high level court cases addressing this because individual patients cannot take this on:

      1) The length of treatment prescribed is often too short i.e. 6 months (should be 2 years min so there is no root damage etc - teeth move SLOWLY).

      2) Too many dentists are incompetent providers for the average ortho treatment.

      3) Plastic trays are a huge waste environmentally and the pressure of removing and inserting is an interference in steady and constant force.

      4) Teeth are not able to breathe and it affects salivation i.e. one may develop dry mouth and dental caries due to the appliance alone.

      5) Attachments that are incorrectly etched to the teeth and used with Invisalign frequently damage enamel i.e. discoloration not because a patient doesn't brush.

      6) Invisalign technicians when developing ClinChecks do not take buccal corridors and advanced facial aesthetics into consideration nor does the average provider - the informed consent document DOES NOT make patients aware of damage to the jaw bone that affect facial form and symmetry, speech/vocals, nasal cavity/sinuses, peripheral vision etc.

      7) The posterior teeth are positioned in a way that make the face droop over time i.e. jowls, marionette lines and your back teeth were not meant to be placed like gears which causes increased attrition i.e. grinding and sharp edges.

      8) It is too expensive to fix damage done and there is no legal recourse for malpractice should the treatment not meet even basic expectations

      9) It has literally ruined many patients' lives including my own in more ways than just increasingly crooked teeth i.e. many will develop bone loss and TMJ pain that is permanent as an adult. Malocclusion of teeth also affect all your other organs including the heart and oxygen supply to the brain. It's not something that can be taken lightly, as it may result in premature death.

It is a horrible product/experience and not an alternative to braces. If you have a mild case or crowding problem, then possibly however it's still extremely risky. I am still upset about it after many years and am still waiting for everything to heal. I've completely stopped going to any practice and gradually everything has improved. I'm studying a dental course so I can learn how to clean my own teeth. Yet, it's not ideal because I still need to have my teeth cleaned and checked professionally. Unfortunately, I keep getting rejected and it started with being rejected for cosmetic enhancements and then it went downhill from there.

My dentist sold me on Invisalign by discounting $1,000. Had me pay $6,850 up front. Then billed my insurance provider over $2,000. Total now is over $8,000. I would NOT have agreed. It was shady. Then they didn't tell me what Invisalign was. I thought I was getting traditional braces. I hated wearing these. The new sets had bits of plastic sticking out that tore up my gums. I quit wearing after set 17. And had 29 total sets to wear. If anyone is looking to do a class action suit, sign me up!

I think Invisalign would be a much better option if there was an opportunity to switch dentists without financial penalty, with the assistance of invisalign, if the results weren't going the way you hoped. I got my invisalign done by a dentist who meant well and was otherwise an excellent dentist. My teeth were a little crowded at the front, both on the bottom and the top, but they looked OK. I was getting some chipping on my bottom teeth and it was difficult to get some of the crowded teeth clean, so I sought to straighten my teeth with invisalign. Sadly, the result broke my heart, even though the crowding was mostly addressed.

Before invisalign I often heard I had a beautiful smile -- nobody ever complimented my smile after the invisalign. The teeth after invisalign looked more off centre than before and one front tooth still stuck out a little more than the rest - now that the teeth were straight, it looked like my teeth were facing a subtly different direction than my face. Also, whereas I used to be able to easily bite with both sides of molars before the invisalign, I now found my left lateral incisors hitting each other before my molars could connect on the left. I told my invisalign dentist I was experiencing all of this and conceded I am high strung and was really struggling to adapt to my new bite; she referenced my concession about being high strung and insisted it was all in my head.

I begged her to continue with my treatment, and said I would pay more; she told me she thought I looked good, and she just didn't see what I was seeing, and gave me my final retainer. Invisalign may have a satisfaction guarantee, but how do you get it if your dentist disagrees with you? Why isn't there a communicated means for an independent result review from another dentist? And why oh why can't you go back and get things fixed after you pay for retainers? Invisalign needs to send information directly to patients re: their package and provide a contact, other than their original dentist, if they are not happy.

Finally, after about 4 different consults, I found a dentist who did a 3D scan and agreed with all my observations -- she validated and showed me on her 3D scans that I now had an open bite and that my upper midline was off my natural centre; she worked with a different company, Suresmile, for a fix. 5 suresmile aligners later, I have a comfortable bite, the dominant tooth is less dominant, and the centre of my teeth looks closer to the centre of my face. I am getting one more set of aligners to make things even better, but if I had experienced the outcome I have after this little bit of suresmile from invisalign, I would never have been unhappy.

I feel so relieved that I can fix the sadness caused by my invisalign. It's not free, but it's less than invisalign was, and worth every penny. I don't actually fault my original provider - you can only fix what you perceive - but I do fault invisalign for giving exclusive control to their provider, since the whole outcome depends so much on the provider's plan for the patient. They do a mock up of how your teeth will move and you sign off on that, but when they show you their preview, they show you how your teeth will look on their own, focusing on the dentist's view when you open your mouth, and don't show you how it will look on your face or tell you how it the bite will work.

The product didn't work for me. It took them only 3 months to send them. Then, the 3.5 month treatment (they sent 14 retainers which should've lasted 1 week each and also I was initially quoted as 2 months by my dentist) turned into 8 months without any result at all and with my superior teeth crooked (they weren't before, sadly). They are not invisible as they look grey and dirty all the time and also the dentist has to adjust your treatment to pull the teeth down and place rubber bands which involves cutting through the plastic which produces significant injuries to your mouth aside from the rubber bands jumping off and hurting your lips because the retainer is not meant for rubber bands as braces are. From the 50 people that spoke to, 100% said they had to reprint the retainers. Also, they smell bad as the plastic is low quality.

One thing that is really helpful for you to know is that Invisalign does not guarantee results nor does your dentist and they are covered by the dental law which states that the dental practitioners only do what they can and thus covering themselves from any liability. The politics of this company are not to speak with the client directly so don't believe them when they say they give a guarantee. It will not be met because your dentist needs to agree to it and they won't - they will charge you again for it.

I wasted a year with Invisalign - if I had chosen brackets my slightly two twisted teeth would've been fixed already. Now probably I won't have any chance again to fix my teeth as dental treatment requires one to stay in one place for years for it to work and I am a digital nomad. So disappointed and frustrated. Avoid this dishonest company.
