This plush Stearns & Foster mattress which cost way way more than it should because it sucks.... Not only has it caused back pain, it cause knee pain, ankle pain, neck pain... It's like sleeping on hard floor with a foam pad. Not soft at all and no support whatsoever. Maybe would be good couch. A place to sit but not lay on and not sleep on. Worst bed ever.

I purchased a new mattress from SEARS on September of 2014. In November I contacted them telling them that I was very unhappy with my purchase, it was not comfortable and I thought it would be more comfortable because of what we paid. They assured me I could return it and said they would have them contact me for pick up. I never heard back from them. :-( I foster dogs, have several properties and work for a real estate company with very little time to play on the phone or computer to keep up with harassing them. It is now April, I still am dissatisfied with my purchase. I wish I would have listened to everyone else and bought wholesale, I would have been able to try 3 new mattress sets for what I paid for this one. :-(

I purchase a Stearns and Foster mattress and for the first couple of months, I slept good in it. Now after a year the mattress is not supporting me as far as my back and I'm a person has had three back surgeries and due to the condition of the mattress on, I am not sleeping well and wake up with my back hurting and I'm tired. So I call mattress firm. Did everything they asked me to do, I paid a technician to come out look at it. They send me a letter stating that they cannot replace the mattress because the imprint is that an inch and a half, it's only half an inch. I'm very dissatisfied. I'm still paying on this mattress.

This not providing what they advertise on TV. Did you get a good nights sleep? I feel that I've been mistreated as far as customer service wise and I need to get this resolved. I talked to numerous people, would they just keep giving me the runaround. I need someone to get this resolved for me. I cannot go purchase another mattress due to that I lost my job after 19 years so someone please help. Sign, disappointed customer.

After 1 1/2 years the mattress began to bulge on the side, at the head of the bed. The technician on January 4th 2014 said the bed did not meet the requirements so we will have to schedule another appointment when it bulges more, so March 31st 2015 was the second appointment. The technician said on this occasion that it looks like the springs were broken. I then called Sears - the company where I purchase the mattress - and they said that there was nothing wrong with it. I then called Stearns and Foster who then said that the springs in the mattress can not be broken, that it was impossible. I could not get anywhere with the customer service at either stores and there was no managers to talk to. At this point I am very angry because I purchase a worrynomore plan which was extra and cost $178.00.

I bought an expensive Woodhurst (2,299.00) and it started to drop on one side of the bed within three weeks. The distributor came out and saw the defect and quickly exchanged for another one, the Wallingford. Two weeks go by and it is sagging on one side. This time the distributor went through the Sealy warranty first and they sent out their inspector who clearly could see it sagging. He offered to rotate the mattress and I declined. Rotating a mattress after two weeks is stupid and I really did not want a stranger in my bedroom any longer than absolutely required. Sealy said it was normal "settling" and refused to replace it or take it back under warranty. I will do the 100 day "unhappy" claim and get a different brand that I research before buying.

We are two small and light people. This is an expensive, "ultra firm" mattress. Soon after purchase, the bed developed a groove where each of us sleep, and it is getting worse and feels like two canyons now. You can't flip the mattress as it is one-sided. Rotating the mattress doesn't help, well, because of the symmetry of 2 people in 1 bed. Not a good choice.

I bought a Stearns and Foster King Mattress in May of 2006 with a 10 year warranty. Several months ago the right side of the mattress dropped about 2 inches, you would roll out of bed if you got close to the side. I called the warranty dept several times and was on hold to the point I would hang up and call the next day. I finally got someone who said, "We no longer come out to your house but we will send you a do it yourself warranty kit." I get the kit and send the email pictures and forms on 2-9-2015. I follow the instructions exactly and hear nothing for two week. I call three times and I am told they are working on the claim. I send emails asking them to call me. I get an email saying they didn't get my pictures. I send everything again. NOTHING. Zero phone calls. Zero emails.

I start calling and can not get anyone in the warranty dept. The person who takes the call says, "They will call you in 5 days." I wait 5 days and call again and demand to talk to the warranty dept. She says that, "I see here in your file that they have never called you back. I will call them right now and they will call you back in 15 minutes." That phone call was on 3-3-2015. I called a week ago and spoke again they said, "They will call you.."

On 3-20-2015 I spoke with ** who said he was the manager in charge and would jump on this but asked me to send pictures AGAIN. I sent a email on 3-20-2015 with the case number of ** expecting some contact..... nothing. I will be contacting Stearns and Foster and the Attorney General of Delaware where I purchased the mattress. Sleazy's does not have a warranty dept - they have a delay dept until the customer is so pissed off that he or she gives up. I will never give up even if I have to take them to small claims court. BEWARE if you by a mattress from them. Expect NO WARRANTY.

Bought expensive Stearns & Foster Mattress ~4 years ago. One side is so bad, that when I sleep on it, I have to put down 3 towels (folded in half for extra support; a foam mattress. Had them come out to look at it and when they did, it passed the "STRING TEST" which is a string that runs from one side to the other "when no one is actually on the bed"... They did not take into consideration that when I am actually laying on the bed, the divot is so deep I cannot even lay in the middle because it forces me back to the divot area. NOT HAPPY! Will never buy a S&F mattress again because I need a good night's sleep and should not have to worry if I pass the "String Test."

In 2014 I purchased a Stearns and Foster Queen Luxury Firm Mattress from the Sears store in Portage, Michigan. In ten months time the mattress began to lose support all through the middle section, meanwhile the perimeter remained firm. It became difficult to get out of the bed when sleeping anywhere but near the sides. I contacted Sears by coming into the store on three occasions to speak with the store manager, ** . He assured me that he would look into the matter and get back with me. He has never done so and does not return my calls. I then spoke with the Customer Satisfaction Department and was told that I must strip the entire bed and measure the mattress across the middle with a ruler, etc.

When I stated that that would not show the problem and needed someone to come out and examine my mattress I was told they would not send someone out to my home "period". When weight is placed near the middle of the mattress the support fails. Needless to say I am very disappointed to have to report this to you the manufacturer. I purchased a Stearns and Foster full mattress 14 years ago and have never had a problem with it, however that mattress can be turned over every 3 months. The wonderful experience with that mattress led me to purchase this new mattress. I am writing to you to see what if anything can be done at this point. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Well a little over 2 years ago my wife and I wanted to treat ourselves to a nice new bed. The mattress we had was nearly 20 years old and it had seen better days. We got a King Size Stearns & Foster's firm model and spent about $2500. Like nearly every review here, after about 6 months we started noticing the bed was becoming very uncomfortable. It began sagging in the area we sleep and the edges and middle stayed firm and raised. We called the store and they sent out a rep. Again like everyone else, the sting and pony trick was used and we were told it was not sagging the 1 1/2" and we did not qualify for the warranty.

Well here I sit at 1:22 AM writing this because I cannot sleep. I haven't slept a full night in months from all the neck and back pain which sends shooting pain right down my legs to my feet.. My wife and I wake up everyday in pain. I would not give this mattress away to someone I don't like. I hate it! THIS IS THE WORST PIECE OF JUNK BED I HAVE EVER SLEPT ON. I put off calling to complain until today when I was ordering a crib mattress for our son and the sales team tried to sell me a memory foam mattress and I said NEVER AGAIN would I make that mistake. She explained to me that memory foam is meant to hold its original shape and that if ours is not bouncing back it is dysfunctional. Surprise Surprise. What we thought was supposed to the Best, ended up being The Worst Mattress purchase choice. Within 30 days we noticed that my 5-10" 165lb. ginormous frame had created a slump, smack dab in the middle of the mattress. I called... oh brother.... I finally was able to make appt. & the mattress tester was sent. He came in, went upstairs, held a plumb bob next to the bed, and immediately apologized for failing the slump test... because he knows this is b.s... but he has rules to follow.

He left, & in a moments notice, we realized we were duped. The mattress did in fact, fail his slump test. I asked for the plumb bob & showed him based on his company's criterion...... His aptitude was nawwww, as this, I would presume, make him do something other than knock on doors, & hang a plumb bob from the side of your bed. In the end Stearns & Foster was a poor choice at best. And yes, after you spend that much $$$$ on a mattress you find that b.s. products with shiny labels are everywhere. Caveat emptor.

I should have realized that it is no longer the same company now that it is an S&F/Sealy company. So where do we all go to get our money back without the insane string test? If we are all complaining about the same thing then the mattress company is selling defective merchandise. When does consumer affairs step in? And once you can get over the fact it sags a little but remember how good it feels then you will realize what's important. Ever since we have had the mattress we have been able to sleep through the night, we actually DREAM and our backs don't hurt. The mattress is fabulous and just swallows you up. I love that it hugs me when I get into it and wouldn't change a thing. It was well worth the money.

We purchased the Thornwood and paid good money for it. It wasn't long before we also felt like the middle of the bed was starting to sag. We put more slats under the mattress. Now, 4 years later, I wake up with a back ache. I find myself sleeping on the side of the bed or another bed in the house. I am so disappointed and will also be more than happy to be included should a class action lawsuit ensue. This was money from my mother's very small estate which makes me even sadder. Thinking back, I remember the clerk asking several times if we felt like we were rolling towards the middle when we were trying the bed out. I eventually got on line and read some reviews and started kicking myself immediately for buying it. This just shouldn't happen.

I went back to Sears where I had ordered them and we called the manufacturer and they said it would be delivered on January the 7th. I told them that that was unacceptable as I had taken the day off work and it was not possible for me to keep taking off work for something that they said that they could do and then changed. They then said that it would be delivered on the original date.

On Monday they called and said that it would not be possible until January the 14th. I told them that was unacceptable and ended the call. I then called Sears again and was told that it was the manufacturer and that it would be the 13th of January. I went to the store and canceled my order as I felt that I was getting the run around and none of them knew what they were doing. Too many different answers and no one really knows what the other is doing. You would think that a company that charges that much for their product would want to keep their customers happy, but I guess that's just me. I will never advise anyone to do busy with them. My husband and I spent $2800 on a luxury (pillow top) firm mattress and box-springs after spending over 40 min lying in the bed at American Signature Furniture the second time we tried it out and 25 min the first. We were so excited to receive a bed we were sure would work. We were no longer trying to be cheap and we expected that we would get what we paid for. After having multiple bad mattress experiences over the past 5 years and were serious about picking the right one.

The stitching is beautiful, the materials look like quality on the outside with easy hold handles all around. They did not have the low profile frame we chose and paid extra for so they gave us the ultra-slim box-springs. The mattress arrived with a horizontal crease in the upper 1/3 of the bed that we were told was due to shipping and would go away (i.e. fluff up). It did not go away and the bed was uncomfortable even when we rotated the head to the foot. The arrival of the slim-line box-springs helped but did resolve the comfort issue completely. A full box-spring would make the bed too high to get into so this was not an option.

They had a 90-day guarantee so we used it for over 60 days before we felt that the pillow-top was probably too soft and the defect was a problem. So we traded it in for the firm which is the next model down and did not complain considering the price of the lower model was $2000 that day. We were then told by American Signature if we had a problem with this new mattress it would be our problem, not theirs.

Well, sad to say, after 3 months it is our problem. Immediately, we were no happier than the bed prior. This one was firmer but still falls in the middle. When we initially lie down it is very comfortable - just the bed we are looking for. After 5 hours it sinks to the point where sleeping more is a painful experience. Sometimes stuffing a pillow under my side (since I am a side sleeper) helps but then it feels too bulky. The same is true for my husband - he also stuffs small pillows under his back.

This expensive bed is barely marginally better than the cheap beds we have purchased. It is certainly not worth the expense we paid. I cannot complain to American Signature because they told us in no uncertain terms not to bother, while we were there to make the change. I also wrote a formal letter to Stearns & Foster 2 months ago and never received a reply. At this point I take serious note that they do not have an online complaint system or any means for public review.

Considering this bed came with an initial defect and then has never been comfortable for us I would expect that they would have initiated some return policy even if it was 50% money back (at that price). Anyway, I will be writing on as many reviews as possible to warn people away from losing so much hard earned money.

I spent right under $3000.00 for this mattress and it is the worst I've ever had. It sleeps like it's about 40 years old. I wish someone would do something about this. Very disappointed in this company! Hopefully there will be a lawsuit against this company that won't stand behind their product.

On 10/14 I purchased a S&F firm from Ashley. Went to sleep the night I got it and woke up at 3:00 because I was in pain from the mattress. It was so hard and the tufts or whatever those are, I could feel everyone of them on my body. I weigh 115 lbs. Went and talked to the manager and he told me that it takes about 6 weeks to "break" the mattress in! I never heard of such lunacy! So, since I wasn't informed of that fact, he did allow me to exchange it for another one. The plush one. Well, after less than a month of sleeping on it, it is too soft. I feel like I am sinking into the mattress. Now, the manager said the mattress would not get any softer than the one I tried in the show room because it had been there for a few months. That was not the case. This mattress is way too soft after a month and I have never heard of having to "break" a mattress in before in my life and I am 60 yrs young. I would not recommend Stearns & Foster to my worst enemy, if I had any. Now I owe over $1700.00 and have to sleep on another bed or continue waking up throughout the night in discomfort and waking every morning in pain!

My husband and I bought our first mattress together after we got married. It was a king size, top of the line Stearns and Foster and we just loved it. 10 years ago, we purchased a twin size Stearns and Foster mattress, model name Darston, from Bedding Experts for my daughter since we were so pleased with our mattress. The mattress developed a defect in the center causing severe sagging and subsequently backaches for my petite 100-lb. daughter. She brought it to our attention three years after we purchased it and eventually we decided we needed to take action. We tried contacting the store by our house that we purchased it from and found out that they had gone out of business.

We contacted Stearns and Foster and wanted them to come out but they refused. Instead they told us to do a measure test and it fell just short of their warranty criteria which we thought was absurd. We are a family with a limited income, living check to check and have been unable to purchase my daughter a new mattress. She has tried to make do by avoiding what has turned out to be a pothole in the middle of her bed. We are very angry at Stearns and Foster for brushing us off and not even sending someone out to look at it. It seems that when mattresses were designed to not be flipped, Stearns and Foster fell behind in that design technology. What we thought was a defect, we now understand that it must be a design flaw after reading all the similar complaints on this website. We recommend that you do not buy Stearns and Foster mattresses.

It started sagging within the first six months. It is now so bad that you feel like you will roll out of it. The middle has a ridge that feels like a hill you have to maneuver around. Neither my husband or I are overweight - I weigh 125 pounds and my side is the worst. I wake up many times during the night with a backache. I have not had anyone come look at it yet, but after reading these reviews, not sure it is worth the effort. I am so tired of this mattress. I end up on the sofa many nights. I purchased what I thought was the top of the line Stearns and Foster mattress and box spring from Bernie and Phyl's out of Nashua, NH. After 3 years it's sagging and giving me backache. Due to not being able to flip the mattress anymore you can only turn it which means you're still sleeping in a valley no matter what. I called asking for the company to do something about it since it's still under warranty, they sent out a "Mattress Marshall" representative twice now. This is how they measure for sagging and defects. A pink string, two office binder clips and a piece of plastic that has a ruler on it. They clip the binder clips on each side of the bed place the feather weight plastic ruler next to it and viola they have a measurement of about 1/2 inch. Now if you were to put say "your body weight" on the sagging part it would sink down about 4 or 5 inches where your butt normally is when you sleep. Next they send you a letter stating basically "so sorry," "we only measured a sag of a 1/2 inch."

I was told this is the way the mattress companies measure not just for Stearns and Foster but for every bed out there that may have a problem. This is a total consumer rip off so they don't have to give you any kind of warranty. I've written to everyone including the company but no one cares. I'm so stinking mad I wish I had the money to start a lawsuit or if I could I would take that mattress and dump it right on the front lawn of the place I purchased it from with a big ole sign stating what a consumer rip off it is, don't purchase one then put about 30 holes from my 229 in it. Because basically the bed is worthless and can only be used for target practice.

15 years ago I purchased a Stearns & Foster mattress set -- LOVED IT!!!! Time went by, it's still comfortable but not as it was, I got a home w/ a guest room & went shopping. The breathability was the main thing back then & remains - so I tried others out but knew I wanted exactly what I had had. I have been against memory foam from the start - it has nothing to recommend it to me - I have no desire to be swallowed up by my bed.

I tried out the S&F mattresses displayed & chose. After paying the sales person gave me the bad news: A) Stearns & Foster was sold to Serta & B) it has memory foam (she pretty much laid my concerns to rest -- so many improvements had been made etc.) which requires that One must go through an absurd breaking in process: one needs to "walk" all over the mattress repeatedly to "open up the cells". I said the best I could do was crawl... & did. She said, "don't sleep in the same spot" - I didn't & that I'd need to give it a month to be broken in. I did. (let me mention here that I am disabled & told the sales person in detail about it). After all that the bed is the MOST uncomfortable I've EVER slept in (or rather, attempted!). It is an instrument of torture!!! I can't get more than 4 hours of sleep before waking in pure misery!

I called to see about getting it replaced by one w/o memory foam - she replied that she didn't carry any but that I could go to other stores & find one & she would see about getting it. Having had no luck, I called S&F (Serta) only to learn to my great dismay that they only make them w/ the wretched foam -- not a single model without!!!!! I'm furious & disgusted. I'd have been better off w/ a mattress that cost 10x LESS!!! & now I'm stuck. It's all so wrong on so many levels! I wish I'd looked for this site first -- it never occurred to me that what had been such a wonderful product would be so... Polite terms escape me.

We can hardly sleep on it anymore. They said that we don't have a middle brace in our bed but we do and that's why they refused to replace it.

We have a metal bar down the center and also a metal cross brace. And on their site the minimum bed frame you need is one main beam down the middle so we are above what they suggest. But nope and it sinks 1.5 down and like every one else, it was done with a string. What a joke. It's not the look of the mattress that we're complaining about, it's the sinking in when we're sleeping on it. So maybe measure that.

I am just starting my fight with them and I will be speaking with them further on this matter. I will not stop until I have a new mattress. We work hard for our money and expect to get good quality stuff. Not defective stuff. I believe they should stand behind their warranties. I stand behind my name and they should too. Purchased a Deacon Ridge Luxury Plush Euro Pillowtop from Mattress.com in November of 2011 for $1,439 for the mattress only for use on a platform bed. This bed was selected because it felt firm enough to satisfy my preferences, yet soft enough to satisfy my partner's. We tried out a very large number of beds before selecting this one. It was very good for us for about 2 years. It has now gotten to where we are sleeping in a hole and I wake up with numb arms. I thought it was just me until a female friend slept on it and had the same result, and when I slept in our camper those same nights I did not have numb arms.

My partner is having neck and shoulder pain after sleeping on this bed, and a male friend of a similar build (tall and trim) also had neck pain after sleeping on this bed. The bed does not display body impressions when no one is on it. When someone is on it, it looks like they have sunk deeply into the bed. It doesn't seem to matter where they are on the bed (middle or sides where we each usually sleep). No warranty for lack of support, just for body impressions. I am going back to my original idea that it is possible to make a hard bed softer by adding a memory foam topper and will buy a firm mattress this time, and I will definitely not buy another Stearns and Foster. If I'm going to have to replace a bed within 3 years, I don't want to spend this much money for it. BTW, we are average weight: 150 - 170.

This time we had to pay for 1 box spring and the rest was replaced. Guess what? Same issue 1 and 1/2 yrs later. Replaced last night. No extra charges. Guess? This am. After a very disappointing call with the Customer Service individual I am going to have start sleeping on the floor as they will not stand behind their product. We are sleeping in a hole after 90 days and I am told this is within normal range. I can't change what I did. I am stuck, as I don't have another $3200 to spend on a mattress, but can definitely help someone else. The mattress gets worse by the night. Please don't buy. I purchased a Stearns and Foster mattress in Jun 3, 2012. It was a Luxury Mattress "Kathryn" and should have been "extra firm". Like the other commenters, I rotated my mattress after 6 months but it still had deep indentations. I am not a large person (140 lbs) and felt that it shouldn't have any indentations as it is a new mattress. I purchased my set from Mattress Firm and felt them to be a reputable store as I had purchased a previous Stearns and Foster mattress from them 2 years prior and also a Simmons mattress from them 4 years prior to that. They gave the "measure this way" instructions and guess what - my indentation is 1 1/2 inches!!

They weren't much help and intimated that I would not have good luck with this claim. I even tried calling the customer service number and received no satisfaction as there are no agents - only computer forms to fill out. I believe this mattress to be defective as it does not feel anything like what I prefer to sleep on and have in my other bedrooms. I also believe it is causing my hip condition which is only relieved when I sleep in another bed. I've done this experiment several times as I am not eligible for any more steroid injections for 3 more months. No hip pain when I sleep on either of the other 2 mattresses I own, one of which is a Stearns and Foster. I am extremely dissatisfied with this purchase and will NOT purchase another from this manufacturer.

Over the last several years, it has become less supportive with indentions. On my husband's side, he says he feels like he is laying in a hole, which is so miserable to try to sleep on. After reading all of the complaints of everyone else about the S&F customer service, I feel defeated already before even trying to get something done about it! Then the impressions began to appear to get deeper.

In March of 2014 I called Sears Store. They told me they would send me a e-mail of how to measure how deep the indentation is. I measured it and it was like 1 1/4 inch deep and they told me it has to be 1 1/2 as if they have known they are selling a defective product and don't plan to make any changes or restitution as a result. My husband and I are on a fixed income, we are both Disabled Veterans and we assumed buying a mattress that is 2000.00 that it's quality would last a long time. I get up with a backache. The mattress was turned every three months as instructed because it could not be flipped. Shortly after purchasing we noticed that body impressions were beginning to appear. We were told that a slight indentation was common in pillow top mattresses so we just accepted it for the time being. Then the impressions began to appear to get deeper.

In March of 2014 we were in the Ashley Store again browsing and just mentioned it to a salesperson. He gave us the number for customer service and once we contacted them, they sent an adjuster out to look at the mattress and take pictures. He saw a 1-1/2" indentation in the mattress with a huge hump in the middle of the bed. The mattress looked like new with the exception of the indentation. He took pictures and advised us that someone from Ashley would contact us middle of the upcoming week. The tag had been removed and he did advise us that the removal of the tag could nullify the warranty.

We waited a week and a half and called the customer service line once again and spoke with a customer service rep who advised us that someone by the name of Jackie was working on trying to resolve the matter for us and would call us. We called again a week later and was told they would not do anything for us. We have the original receipt with the description of the mattress. The salesman at Ashley did not tell us that removing the tag would void the warranty. The mattress is approx. 17" deep and the tag was cumbersome when trying to make the bed. We would totally be on board with a class action suit against Sealy and/or Stearns and Foster. It sounds as if they have known they are selling a defective product and don't plan to make any changes or restitution as a result.

Within 5 years, both sides of the pillow tops were totally out of shape and the stitching of the pillow tops which hold it in form was virtually gone, even though the mattress was flipped about every 3 months. So I filled a claim with Sears and about one year later they replaced the mattress; however it was replaced with a lower quality mattress telling me the one I purchased was no longer available (doubtful). 3 years later, the replacement mattress has the sides actually bulging out like the inner supports are broken. Filed yet another claim while still under the original warranty, and wouldn't you know it, they lost my original claim even and now I am told that the warranty has expired and tough luck you must keep our trash. Did I mention I have the original email claim date from (Wed, Jan 30, 2013 12:01:48 )? Sears tells me that claim date does not matter since they cannot find their file. All in all what I guess you can take from this is do not purchase any mattress from Sears and DO NOT PAY EXTRA for the STEARNS & FOSTER Name. It means nothing except POOR QUALITY. They emailed me instructions on how to properly measure the depressions in the bed (I have 6' level that I laid across bed) and had me take pictures of the bed and box frame under the mattress and bed frame and all the tags on the bed and box frame. I tour the bed and back together to tell me they are sending out an inspector now to do what they had me do.

The warranty on the bed is an 1 1/2 inch depression in the mattress. My side of the bed is 2 inches and wife side is 1 7/8 inches. The bed when we purchased it is to have a 20-year warranty. The inspector is coming the 17th of April. I asked for earlier date because I am to be out to Nebraska at that time for a family meeting and decided on my Mother's well being as to whether to make her have surgery or let her wishes be as she wants (8 children of hers). They said no and that was best they could do!!!! Of course it gets better. They have a 4-hour window of time the inspector will be here at the house. No set time so I get to set and wait till they decide to show up...

I think it is time for class action lawsuit and maybe they can pay for all the back issues caused by their poor product. Maybe the inspector will issue us a new bed but the company I purchased the bed from refuses to sell their products because of all the same issues with their beds and do not stand behind their warranty. The store owner also told me that if they send inspector out to the house, they get paid by the company to reject claims and find anything they can with it to be rejected, even a small spot or stain on the bed.

Talked with rep on 1/9/14. Was to call me back in day or two. On 1/23/14 called cust svc. Talked to another rep who was to call me back. Never did. Called week later. Talked to cust svc mgr. Mgr mailed claim forms. Filled forms out per instructions. Called weeks later and was told claim was in process. Wife called week later, was informed 3rd inspection was necessary.

Called S & F cust svc attempting to talk with previous CS mgr. Had to demand to speak to cust svc mgr. When talking to cust svc mgr she told me I had not taken proper photos but when I asked her to show me what I did incorrectly she could not show me. I emphasized to her the excessive length of time that had passed since my initial reporting of my problems to S & F on 10/23/13, a previous inspection in Nov of 2013, her sending me another claim form including photos and completion of pertinent data and the inconvenience of requiring a 3rd inspection and nothing has been accomplished yet. Then she either hung up on me or we got disconnected.

After approx 6 mos of dealing with the retail store, the 1st inspection rep, the scores of phone calls required to schedule the inspection. The time and effort in dealing with multiple reps at consumer svc dept when I would be told they would look into my problem and call me back. I would NEVER receive a call back. Finally I called again and insisted on speaking to the dept. mgr. After a lengthy discussion she told me she would look into it and she would mail me the paperwork to perform another inspection. I performed the inspection as instructed and mailed it back. Not hearing from them, I called back again and was ultimately told they had mailed old instructions to me which had recently been changed and that the old instructions no longer provided the required data. Then to my chagrin I was informed that yet another inspection would be required. It appears as if this will only end when they wear me out. I bet I can guess the ultimate outcome!

In 2013 we invested $2800.00 for our Stearns and Foster luxury firm mattress. The company Mattress Firm suggested we buy the accompanying box springs and good mattress covers so that the lifetime warranty would be enforceable should we need it. Six months after purchase our backs began to hurt and we began the long journey of physical misery. Our backs hurt so bad we are now considering sleeping on the floor or in a chair, anything sounds better to us than our bed!

Eventually a customer service rep came out to test the mattress. The test consisted of pulling a string across our mattress and taking pictures. No other tools were used to determine whether or not the bed could bear the weight of an adult. There were no test performed that would give him information as to the tensile strength of the infrastructure of the mattress or whether or not the mattress could still bear the weight of a human being.

A week later we're informed, by letter, that the indentation was not deep enough to qualify for a replacement of the mattress. This was no surprise to us as the blatant phoniness of the test used to determine the functionality of the mattress let us know we were being screwed. Logically speaking, it is impossible to determine how defective the infrastructure of a mattress is by pulling a string across it. Especially when the mattress is manufactured with a pillow top of memory foam. Common sense would have addressed our complaint and the issue at hand by using the same test we did when we bought the mattress.

The final decision to buy our mattress by how it feels when we lay on it and how it supported the weight of our bodies. It is also the reason we called Stearns and Foster out to test the mattress. The mattress no longer had the ability to bear up under the weight of two average weighing adults (120lb and 200lb). The need to determine whether or not the mattress has the ability bear weight should be at the number one criteria used to determine whether or not the mattress needs to be replaced. This company is stealing from all of us! I consider this as thievery! Our next step will be to first file a small claims lawsuit and to look into a class action suit.

In October of 2009, we purchased a Stearns & Foster bed, box springs, and frame from an Ortho Mattress Retailer in Torrance, Ca. We paid $1865 for a top of the line pillow-top bed. I had previously purchased a Sterns and Foster mattress and found it to be excellent. Unfortunately this was not the case with the new purchase. We found the bed to sink in the middle. We would spend a great deal of time at night trying to climb out of what felt like a deep trench. We turned the mattress a number of times to see if this would make a difference. It didn't. We did some remodeling in our bedroom and so we didn't use our new bed for about nine months. We slept in another room on our old Sterns and Foster which was a dream sleep. When we got back into our new bed, we struggled with the same problem.

In December of 2012, I got in touch with the Ortho retailer to complain about the bed and seek a warranty replacement. They provided me with paperwork and instructions to apply for an inspection to determine if the bed would qualify for the warranty. I was sure it would. I was required to pay for the inspection. It cost me $58.00. The inspector came out in February of 2013 and did the string measurement. He found a 7//8" compression in the middle and reported it was slightly less firm in the same area. How he determined the firmness is not clear since he did not lay on the bed or observe anyone laying on the bed. Ortho refused to do anything for us. It cost me $58 to find out they would not cover it. I went back to the Ortho store and talked to the manager. He would not do anything.

My husband and I place two 10 pound hand weights in different places on the bed to determine how bad the depression was with weight. In the middle of the bed the depression was six inches. I am going to contact Sealy, the company that owns Sterns and Foster and see if they will give us any consideration. I think this bed has been defective from the beginning and it should be covered by warranty. I am very disappointed with Sterns and Foster. I won't buy another one. I am very disappointed with Ortho. They could have saved me the $58 I spent on the inspection. I think both companies know this is a problem product and they should take care of it.

problem is working out with the mattress depression issue.

    Original Review: Jan. 23, 2014

In December 2013, we purchased a Stearns & Foster for $1800.00. Within one week of sleeping on it the body depressions/sinking-in sensation became evident and uncomfortable. We told the store, Havertys where we purchased it of the problem. They sent out a service tech, who did the "String Test". Basically if it does not sink in at least one and a half inches then it is considered non-defective and not replaceable. However the string test is an outdated and unreliable measure since there is no weight on the bed when tested.

We then contacted Stearns and Foster (Sealy) direct, and was given the same speech by a Company Rep as the Service Tech: "Must be 1 1/2 inch depressed with string test for us to consider it defective, if it does not meet that, then no return and no refund." From seeing all the complaints online and talking to the customer service department we realize we are stuck like everyone else with a lousy product. We purchased Stearns & Foster because we had one years ago that was a quality product. They were a reputable mattress maker; well no more is Stearns and Foster in our opinion a quality company. I would bet the Company Founders would be extremely disappointed in the poor workmanship and customer service that they are producing today.

We purchased a Stearns and Foster plush pillow-top mattress in June 2011 from Ashley Furniture in Madison Wisconsin. At the time, they did not have the size/style available, we were hosting a student from Spain, and did not have the 3+ weeks to wait for one ordered. As a last effort, they offered one from the "back" that met our need/desire. It was half-price!! It appeared new, nothing was tagged that it was defective, and it was in the original plastic bag. We thought it was a gift from Heaven.

Shortly (within 2 months) after we installed it in our bedroom, my wife complained. She thought we were both being sucked into the center of the mattress. I thought she was nuts, we just spent $800 for our first mattress. We switched sides. One side was better. We slept in other beds in other's homes and hotels and kept returning to ours' to realize how defective our mattress was. We aren't big people, 155 lbs and 120 lbs. Our young son, 77 lbs, confirmed that you roll to the center.

So now after a couple of years I decided to do something about it. I took a stiff straight edge and decided to try and define the "sink hole." Without anything on the bed, I can find most of the mattress is about 1.25" lower than the edges but what does that really prove! So I decided to put some weight on the bed and see if that makes the sink hole apparent. I used a 25 lb dumbbell plate, my knee, and both my son and I laying on it. My knee sunk 8" and my hip sunk 5.5". I graphed all five sets of data and brought it to the store to show them. Ashley Furniture was very nice, but they can't help because I bought one from the "back" that was sold as-is. I now return to this site and realize that because it deflects only 1.25" and there is a stain, I likely will not have gotten any help anyway. Ah, the stain. To maintain the warranty, we had to use a special mattress cover purchased for $80.00. In the summer we would wake up soaked in sweat - so yes we took it off! What good is sleeping on a "pillow-top" when it is covered in plastic. Reminded me of the TV show, Everybody Loves Raymond - his mothers couch was covered in plastic. Sadly, my experience with this mattress does not share any of the humor with the TV show.

Six months ago, we purchased a $1700.00 Stearns & Foster King Luxury Plush Euro Pillowtop mattress set and it began to develop uneven dips and became distorted approximately 3 months after our purchase. After several months of uncomfortable sleep and neck/back pain, we contacted Bassett Furniture regarding the issue. Bassett sent a warranty adjuster to inspect the mattress. The adjuster measured the depressions at 1" on the side where I sleep and on the side where my husband sleeps. The uneven surface is very noticeable just by looking at the mattress. My body frame is petite and I weigh 120 lbs and my husband weighs 160 lbs. How can 120 lbs cause a 1" dip in just several months? The report was submitted to Bassett and they later called us saying it did not exceed the 1 warranty limit and they will not be able to proceed with the claim.

I contacted Sealy Stearns & Foster in Brenham, TX to complain about the mattress and they gave me the runaround saying that the dips have to be 1" deep in order to be warranted and that pillowtop mattresses do create a cavity for body molding which cradles the body for a better sleep. This is nonsense! We replaced a 15-year-old Sealy Pillow Top mattress set which did not have these cavities and was in much better condition that this new mattress. It was a big expensive mistake in replacing our mattress. Makes me wonder if Sealy may be re-manufacturing used mattresses and selling them as brand new as new mattresses should not create these deep cavities and causing uncomfortable sleep.

We are very disappointed with Bassett Furniture as they promoted these mattresses as being the best and most comfortable mattresses and also with Sealy Stearns & Foster as they have very poor customer service and refuse to fix the problem they created. They just don't care about consumer satisfaction and we will never buy another Sealy mattress.

We took a similar mattress worth a thousand less even trade that felt lovely. We turned it religiously as instructed and it is awful. It has a ditch down each side with a levee in the center. I am going to throw it out and start over. I have contacted neither Mattress King (as they will tell me it is a mfg problem) nor S and F based on other reviews here plus the last thing I want is another one! Worst $4000 purchase I ever made. If anyone mentions either Mattress King or Stearns and Foster, RUN.

After years of wanting a Stearns and Foster I bought one Titanium coil in coil cost close to $2,000 just for mattress!!! I should have learnt my lesson from years ago when I bought a Sealy Posture-Pedic. They're both made by Sealy that went soft and wrong as well... Here's what happened all over the mattress not in one place the mattress just sunk !!!!! Totally lost its support!!! I was more comfortable sleeping on the bedroom floor with just a pillow, which is what I did for 3 weeks until I got a full refund 6 months after I bought it!!!!!! From Mattress Firm!!! People out there avoid any item made by Sealy, they're crap!!!! Really crap, I've just bought a Simmons Beautyrest to replace it... If you use a credit card to buy mattress with, you can bounce charges back inside 90 days. We wrote to Mattress Firm head office and informed them it was mis-sold to us that worked and threatened to bounce charges back even though it was outside 90 days!!!!!! Don't buy Sealy products, Stearns and Fosters was sold to them many years ago. That's when Stearns and Foster product went bad.

First the representative said they never received the complaint or that we can't find our information after waiting approximately two weeks. Finally, we re-sent photos of our bed, copy of our original receipt and additional photos of the satin label and other photos relating to the date and manufacture of the bed. The bed was purchased from a reputable dealer and since we relocated all of our dealings have been with the manufacturer. I went to the store with my complaint, and was told to "take a picture" of the mattress. I did so, sent it to them with no avail. I contacted the manager of the store, he told me to take ANOTHER picture. I did, he did not bother to call me back. It's been at least 2 weeks. I started this complaint in October!!! We purchased a very pricey Stearns and Foster pillow top mattress about 3 years ago. There have been ruts forming where we lay since about the first year. It is now very uncomfortable due to the depth of the ruts. We even spun the mattress around thinking that might help. Well, there are just new ruts on the other end now and you can feel the old ones by your feet. I called Carsons, where we bought the mattress, and they referred me to Stearns and Foster where they had someone come out and inspect the mattress. They do use a weight and string to measure the depth of the ruts, which doesn't seem accurate at all since when there is any weight on the bed, the ruts are pretty bad. Since I hadn't heard anything for about 3 weeks and they were supposed to contact me in 10 days, I called them today.

They said that the mattress falls into the normal classification for the condition it's in and that's how they make mattresses these days, where they are supposed to sink a little to form to your body. WHAT??? There is a mountain in the middle of my bed and you feel like you're rolling uphill and downhill from your side of the mattress!! This is normal??? I was told these were the best mattresses when I spent the small fortune on it, and now am very disappointed. They did say I can call them to check it again in 6 months. Oh do I feel better now! In the meantime, I have a very uncomfortable, expensive mattress that is only 3 years old. I will not be recommending or purchasing a Stearns and Foster Mattress!

Since I can't take it back (I had bought a very expensive foam? last year and it also had problems with sinking), I took it back and replaced it with a Stearns and Foster mattress and when I called to complain about my new mattress, they said, "Sorry, your 1 year guarantee is up." I said huh? They said the 1 year guarantee started when I bought the first mattress. Now, I'm stuck with this piece of junk! We have turned it and now it has 2 holes on each side of the bed and a hump in the middle. Since reading on here about the company sending out someone to measure the bed with a string and a weight without anyone laying on it and then telling the person they wouldn't give them a new mattress, and you have to pay the guy to come to your house to look at it! So now I had to order a nearly $300 dollar mattress topper for the mattress. I hope it helps all my back and neck pain. My wife & I returned from overseas and a dear friend bought us a Stearns & Foster King Pillow Top as a house warming gift. He met us at the Mattress store, had us try a few different ones. We left and he purchased this one and met me with the papers in his hand and we went and collected the Mattress from the Portland, Oregon warehouse. Such an awesome friend... Unfortunately, he died only a few months later. I explained to the rep that the top is sagged about 8 inches, and steel spring ends have poked through the corners and rip the bedding. It's unusable and only 9 years old. We understood it to have a 20-25 year warranty.

I also explained I don't have his paperwork... but the tag is on the bed, references the date of manufacture, Warranty F3, Bed model code, etc... even the S&F warehouse delivery address we collected it from. This rep wouldn't do anything without the receipt. I said, "I don't want money, I just want a repair or replacement." The rep demanded a receipt. I said, "This isn't a T-Shirt from Target you can get a gift receipt for. Mattress sellers don't give gift receipts and my friend is dead." SHE HUNG UP. No "let's see if we can help", no" I'll look up the Mattress Tag codes"... just hung up! This is unacceptable. So if you're looking at a Gift Registry.... NO S&F or Sealy Products. The new one, months later, is doing the same thing. My no flip no dip mattress I paid two thousand dollars for is now killing my back and has a hill in the middle of it. Had two inspections done and they say only the box springs are defective now... They will only replace box springs which won't fix the mattress and want to charge me to deliver the box springs on top of it (the whole set needs to be replaced, the mattress is too far gone support wise). But they say it doesn't meet the warranty requirements of an inch and a half but I was in the room with the inspector and the measurement was right at an inch and a half. Since then, we have been waking up with back and shoulder pains which seems to be getting worse by the day. We called Sleep Train and questioned it in regards the issue and were blown off and told to contact their warranty department.

We purchased this Stearns & Foster mattress from American TV in Wisconsin less than two years ago at a cost of $1700.00 for just the top mattress. We had recently purchased new box springs and did not feel it necessary to change them out. Further, the salesperson said that it would not void the warranty to keep the existing boxes. Within about nine months of use, we noticed that the bed sags noticeably on both my wife's side and mine. The measurements for the indentation was 1.25 inches in a couple of places. I submitted a claim with photos and a detailed description of the problem. An American representative contacted me to say that, until the sag is at least 1.5 inches, the mattress is considered non-defective. Unfortunately, what we are not able to represent on the photos (and it apparently does not matter anyway) is that there is little support in the sagging areas when lying on them. When we manage to hoist ourselves out of the mattress, it pops back up to 1.25 inches deep. I have never paid this much for a mattress before, and I am floored that American will happily promote such an expensive failure. As a final kick in the pants, I may have to stop sleeping in a fairly new bed because the arthritis in my back will not tolerate such torture. Thanks American and S&F for a lesson learned... I will not return.

Everyone has heard about the final straw that broke the camel's back... that is why I am writing in. We have not had a good night's sleep in more than two and a half years unless we sleep on anything else... BUT this Stearns & Foster king size mattress!!!!! This email has been festering for over two years and now we have reached a frustration point beyond compare!!!! :-0

We decided to invest in a good quality and the FIRMEST mattress, we could buy on the market. We thought buying an expensive brand would assure us of a deep and comfortable good night's sleep. So we went to Sleepy's and they sold us this expensive mattress set, manufactured by Stearns & Forster's. We paid close to $2500 on Sale :-0!! Every dollar was hard earned by the sweat of the brow, literally!

We purchased this from Sleepy's in Attleboro, MA on 03/1/2010. The initial thrill and comfort of this brand new King size mattress wore out, in just a couple of months when we first had to contact Sleepy's for the sinking of this terrible mattress. The first time they insisted the sinking would be arrested by changing their box spring which I thought was silly on a brand new set which had more than a 12" (a foot thick) mattress?? On their suggested sturdy frame that Sleepy's insisted we buy... how would changing the box spring help?? The sinking dent was only in the first couple of inches and rest of the mattress was okay.

But we let them replace it. But that did not help in any way. We also continued following the instructions of rotating this mammoth monstrous mattress every time we changed the sheets. It is a Dinosaur! Changing the box springs did not give us any relief and over the next few months the ditch in the bed just got deeper!! ;-0 So we called again! Every time the company sends a inspector over he comes in with a thread to measure the depth of the sinking of the mattress and probably a 100 gm weight.... which floats on the mattress fabric held taut by the seaming and the sunken and collapsed foam/filling/springs underneath are not seen as the weight is not heavy enough.

How can a 100 gm weight show the depth of the collapse or compare with the weight of a tall healthy human being weighing 200 lbs??!! This mattress now has a mound.... a hill in the middle and this huge king size mattress can accommodate only one person who has to sleep on a tightrope space in the middle of the bed (the only space on the 6' X 6' mattress) on guard the whole night trying not to go into deep sleep due to the fear that one can roll over on either side. It is like sleeping on the edge with one eye open (I am no James Bond, but I have to do it) for the fear of falling. But that is the only place one can sleep on if it has to support your back or you are visiting the Chiropractor every week... which we have been doing after paying for this expensive mattress.

We are not ready to go for an exchange and losing the money we paid for it. I would like and request both Sleepy's and Stearns & Foster's CEO or a person of authority capable of understanding or empathizing with this frustration to contact us immediately to RESOLVE this matter at the EARLIEST or give me my hard earned money back. And please... I am sick of the senseless visit of the inspector with the thread and the tiny weight they send him out with. We have reached a breaking point with this mattress! And YES - We sleep like a babies on anything but this mattress!

So whoever receives/opens/reads this email... contact your supervisor and he/she, his/her and so on... Please make sure and follow up on this matter and settle this once and for all. What a waste of money this Stearns & Foster Mattress is. All it has given is SLEEPLESS NIGHTS & BACK ACHES!! Sleepy's knows - Nothing is possible without a good night's sleep right?? Consumer Affairs has our number. Don't just pass the buck, back your product! Thank you. Have a good day :-).

I purchased a Stearns and Foster Mattress in 2009 from Sleepy’s and was told that I had a 20 year warranty. It was a high end product that I paid almost two thousand dollars for. I was told that it was the new latex product that would last a lifetime! They forgot to mention that it was the lifetime of a goldfish! The mattress has completely failed and it’s like sleeping on a bad water bed. When you lie down on the bed it feels like there is a large ridge in the middle and you tilted to one side. I have actually fallen out of the bed on more than one occasion. I called the retailer and they said that they would come out to inspect the product.

A gentleman came out a week later and with a string and a couple of clips took some measurements. I tried to explain that all you had to do was just sit on the bed and you would see how it sinks completely to the platform. He told me that all he does is measure and report back to Sleepy’s. What a joke! Sleepy’s called me a week later and told me that the Stearns and Foster was up to manufacture standards. I was told that the industry standard on warranty was only based on measurements. If that is truly the case then the industry, along with Stearns and Foster is hiding an inferior products behind the guise of a legitimate warranty.

Luckily my husband sometimes sleep in another room or we would burn this thing. Macy's has been here two times to check the sinkage and we are about 1/2 to 1 inch off from them replacing it. Customer service shouted at me when I called to say I had surgery and had to sleep on my back in the same area for two weeks and said the mattress had to be moved each month. We were not aware the mattress had to be moved each month.

I called Stearns and Foster and never got a return call. We had a Stearns and Foster many years ago and loved it, but evidently things have changed. We tried several mattresses from Macy’s and they all have major defects. One that remains unnamed had so many bumps in it we took a photo where a family picture was sitting on the bed and it was sinking after three days. Consequently we have bought absolutely nothing from Macy's which used to be my go to store and now amazed how many other places can replace everything we need.

We bought our beautiful Stearns & Foster Pillowtop mattress from Macy's in November of 2011 for $2,000. It showed up and we never enjoyed it as much as we did those first few weeks, and then it was a steadily declining experience thereafter.

In the following weeks and months, the indentation and sagging got worse. My wife started complaining about back aches about 6 months after owning it and joking about sleeping in the guest room or the couch instead at night. In June of 2013 we asked the Macy's salespeople about it when we were in the mall one day and they said to call their customer service number. The gentlemen on the phone asked if I had it on a Stearns & Foster box spring, and I said no. He said, "Well, your warranty is void." I told him it's a platform bed, and he said, "Oh, does it have a support in the middle of it?" I said yes, it has storage drawers underneath it and slats across the top of them. He asked me if there were any stains on it, and I asked him, "What do stains have to do with sagging and defective quality materials in the pillowtop?"

He responded, "If there are any stains, your warranty is no longer in effect because it shows you didn't maintain it." I told him, "No, there aren't any stains. Do you have any other ways to void the warranty, hidden up your sleeve?" He said they'd send someone out to inspect it and to determine if it's defective. I asked him what is the process and methodology that this individual will use to determine if it's defective? He told me that a representative would show up and he'd perform a "string test" and measure the amount of sagging down from the string. I laughed and knew that Stearns & Foster had won.

Now I understand that there needs to be a consistent and objective way to determine if a mattress is defective, lest, every deceitful consumer can just call them up every 5 years and say they want a new one. But the string test is a total joke. The mattress companies have come up with this ridiculous test, whereby they pull a string tightly from one side of the bed, to the other side of the bed and measure how far down the mattress is from that string, and that is how they determine if it's defective or not.

In my case, I did the test myself and measured ours at 1.25" in 3 spots. According to the mattress company, if it's not greater than 1.5" then it's considered normal wear. As you can see, this is a total scam.

When weight is applied to the pillowtop, it will further compress the materials, and create even worse indentations and sagging, possibly to the point of being able to inflict continuous discomfort and pain in one's back, which may require medical attention. It's like a feather pillow, that just keeps slowly compressing over time to the point that it doesn't provide any real support and you just throw it out or buy a new one. Unfortunately, throwing out a $2000 mattress every few years to buy a new one isn't within our budget.

So now we have a mattress that's entirely uncomfortable. The warranty is useless. My wife refuses to use it and I have to go spend a couple thousand on a new non-Stearns & Foster mattress. So, I have resigned to the fact that all I can do is take my frustration to the world wide web and post this review in a few different places to get the word out. That, and every time I go to the go to Costco or to Macy's with my wife, I go out of my way to tell anybody I see looking at mattresses about my experience with Stearns & Foster mattresses. I hope that by educating another unsuspecting customer of the blatant disregard for customer satisfaction that Stearns & Foster shows in manufacturing high-end, low quality mattresses, that I can save them from a great deal of sleepless nights, and impact Stearns & Foster's bottom line.

Maybe if all of us do this, Stearns & Foster will be able to measure the impact to the health of their company of producing garbage quality products, with something as rudimentary as a string test.

In February 2012 (16 months ago), we bought a Stearns & Foster Estate Royal Parks II Luxury Firm Euro Pillowtop King Mattress at Sears in Canoga Park, CA 91303. The sale price was just under $2,000. By the third/fourth month, we noticed sagging on one side. It felt like you are sleeping either on an uphill or on a downhill bed due to the sag. I feel like I have to physically pull my body up to turn in the bed. I am 150 lbs. and my wife is 135 lbs.

In December 2012, we called Sears and were given instructions as to how to obtain warranty resolution from Stearns and Foster. It involves taking pictures and measurements. The instructions state that anything less than 1.5 inch sag will not be considered a defect. Our measurements were more than 1 inch. They sent out an inspector, and he did the measurements and also took a few pictures. A few weeks later, a Sears representative told us that the inspector's measurement was 1 inch and our mattress is NOT qualified for warranty.

In May 2013, the sag got worse, and in our opinion, it was more than 1 inch. Again, we contacted the warranty department and an inspector came and did measurements and took several pictures. A few days later, a Sears representative told us that the inspector's measurement was less than 1 inch and our mattress is NOT qualified for warranty. I asked her that the inspector's measurement in December 2012 was about 1 1/4"; how can it be less than 1 inch now? She told me that she does not have the December record of the inspector's measurement.

Furthermore, indirectly, she told me that I should expect up to 1.5 inches sag for a $2,000 Stearns & Foster mattress. I should live with it until the sag gets to 1.5" (as measured by the inspector!!!), then they may replace the mattress. In other words, what this tells me is that after spending about $2,000 for a mattress that sags after four months, I must endure discomfort for another 0.5 inch and then hope that Stearns and Foster will honor the warranty.

I purchased a king size Stearns and Foster pillow top mattress in 2006. Within a couple months of purchase, it began to sag in the middle. I had the company come out. They said it is not sagged enough to return. I had this mattress checked out three times (they sent the same man with the ruler). It is the most expensive mattress I purchased and the worst in terms of durability. I put a board under the mattress and it really did not help. Consequence is continued back pain and the company did not own up to the fact that the mattress had a problem.

I purchased a Stearns & Foster Mattress (replacement for Tempurpedic) in June 2012. After a month, it began to feel uncomfortable. I would awake with backaches. After 5 months, there were lumps like the old cotton filled mattress of the Army cots. The sides had no support and sitting on the edge would cause complete compression of the mattress. Rotation of the mattress improved the condition for a month or two, but then that ended and followed the same deterioration. Now there are sags and lumps at body reclining positions. I am 5'11" tall and weigh 160 pounds, so it is not from overweight wear and tear.

I will seek satisfaction from the purchase location, but I understand the warranty will not cover this kind of manufacturing fault. I would advise mattress purchasers to thoroughly investigate before buying.

And you will - it's prone to developing "holes" where you lay and buying sheets for this H-1 HumVee monster is a big headache - it's about a foot and a half thick! So is my skull, apparently, for choosing to buy this costly and impractical Brontosaurus. In our other bedroom, we have a single-pillowtop Cal King Simmons Beautyrest. I purchased my mattress from Ortho on 4th of July week in 2011. I paid $2,800 for the mattress. The first night we got in the bed, we sunk into a big hole. It was awful! I went back to the Ortho store to return the mattress within 30 days. The sales associate informed me that I had to go through customer service. I have had customer service out several times, and they will not return because it's 1 1/4 inches. My Stearns and Foster still felt like I was sleeping in a toilet bowl! I have had a miserable night's sleep every night since I bought this bed. Well, I have decided to do something about it. Every week that I have a miserable night’s sleep, I will tell my story to someone thinking about buying a Stearns and Foster mattress and save other people from making the same mistake I did.

Here are my stats so far. On November 24th (Black Friday) in JC Penney's, a couple was going to buy a Stearns and Foster mattress. I told my story, and converted them to a Serta mattress. On December 29th (Saturday after Christmas) at Bloomingdales, a lady was thinking about buying a Stearns and Foster mattress for over $5000; she decided on a Kluft mattress. On December 29th at Macy's, a lady was going to buy a Stearns and Foster. I told her my story about waiting for my husband to go to sleep, and I sneak into the guest room to sleep in my $500 Serta mattress; she bought a Serta. On January 18th at Costco, a couple was going to buy a mattress (it was only $999). I told the same story about sneaking into the guest room, and they went to Sam's Club to buy a Serta. By January 18th, there were four customers, totaling to $13,000, decided not to buy Stearns and Foster.

By January 20th, I decided this is not good enough. Look on your reviews. There are far too many people getting a miserable night’s sleep because Stearns and Foster sell saggy mattresses. I had a t-shirt made with a “Do not buy Stearns and Foster” message on it. On President's day weekend, I went to Sears wearing the t-shirt. I hung out on the Stearns and Foster mattress for hours. I sent my friend to get me coffee, and I slowly drank my coffee while sitting on a mattress. This was much more effective. I told my story over and over. I saved a lot of customers from sleeping in a sink hole. I have attached pictures. I will continue to go out every week end and tell my story wearing my t-shirt.

By the third/fourth month, there was a hump in the middle of the bed, and we felt like we are sleeping in a ditch. We turned the mattress hoping it would get better, but it did not. I can no longer sleep on my stomach as my back hyper extends slightly. I can't roll over to hug my husband because of the hump in the middle of the bed. It’s even hard to roll from one side to the other, and it’s very uncomfortable all night long. We have tried sleeping on the hump in the middle, but we roll off. We contacted Ortho Mattress, and they sent an inspector out on 4-26-13. He measured and took photos, but did not lie down on the bed. We received a letter stating that our body impressions are less than 1 1/2" (ours measured 7/8"), and they denied our claim to replace.

He did say that the box spring may be sagging, causing the mattress to sag. We said that we replaced an older Stearns & Foster mattress and that the old box spring didn't sag. He said that the new box springs are not as well made and need to be supported in the middle. We added support under the middle of the box spring and the sag went away. If you're looking for a good night's sleep, don't look towards Stearns & Foster! I am the owner of a Stearns & Foster mattress that is 18 months old and simply put, it is the worst mattress I have ever owned! Our mattress is Whitegate Extra Firm and after 18 months, it sags! After initiating a claim with Havertys, which denied my claim because it does not qualify as defective (although they stated I should get a new mattress), Havertys then pointed me in the direction of Stearns & Foster. I called Stearns & Fosters customer service and spoke to an employee who spoke to me as if I were an idiot. She explained that sagging was natural, even though my mattress was extra firm and the outlandish justifications of defending their mattress continued.

Her final statement was, "Your mattress is not defective, but maybe your husband sleeps too sound!" I explained to her that was the purpose of a good mattress - to sleep sound. If my husband slept sound, do you think I would have initiated a claim with Havertys! I was promptly passed to the customer mediation manager. What a joke! He did not mediate anything, but reinforced how my mattress was not defective and that a customer's personal feelings did not matter!

I am not a first time Stearns & Foster buyer. In fact, this is my third Stearns & Foster mattress. I can tell you something is wrong with this mattress! You can visibly see the sinkhole but according to Havertys and Stearns & Foster, it's okay for us to sleep in a sinkhole. My greatest issue at this point is not with the mattress itself, although it is awful, but it is with the customer service both companies provided! Havertys was not helpful at all and Stearns & Foster were just unprofessional! In today's economy, companies should value each customer and Havertys and Stearns & Foster obviously do not understand nor do they value the consumer! So if you want a bad mattress and worse customer service, by all means buy a Stearns & Foster mattress.

First, this is not a warranty claim. Our warranty is long over. However, it occurred to me that you just might want a follow-up to a purchase made a couple of years ago. Our Marlene King Mattress is so heavy that the minimal “turning” we must do is an enormous chore. But that is a minor concern considering the hot trap into which we fall each night.

We loved the Marlene at first; that is why we purchased what was then the Ortho Mattress store’s top of the line. We have carefully turned the mattress from side to side so that a trough wouldn't form. However, now a couple of years later, we find that there are two troughs in which we must sleep (with a hump in between), and out of which it is most difficult to turn. One night when my husband was out of town, I slept in the middle - most uncomfortable.

Additionally, the mattress is hot. It is probably the memory foam. But it causes my husband to get up literally every night in order to cool off (and we keep our house at 64 degrees). While I don’t expect there is anything you can or will do, I thought you might consider some feedback in developing future mattresses. They answered: “We definitely understand. Sealy takes great pride in the quality of its products and appreciate hearing from customers who are experiencing a problem of any nature. We will take note of the information you provided and keep it in mind as we move forward as a company. We hope you have a good day.” The result: it is hard to have a good day when you haven't had a good night's sleep. It sounds as though they don't care at all.

According to S&F, it does not qualify for replacement. It must sag 2 inches and the bulge is normal. According to them, it is just a material problem, not a spring problem. We went back to where it was purchased today. They advised us we can do the store's sleep program which requires us to pay a 10% restocking fee on a $2,400 and pay for delivery again. We have had two services calls and half a dozen phone conversations. I don't think I should pay for restocking of delivery.

At least, the retailer is willing to work with us and hopefully when we do a little more research, we will purchase a better mattress when we return to the retailer in two weeks. I might add that we have fortunately been good clients of the retailer and referred quite a few people to them, so they seem to be willing to work with us. I unfortunately will never buy another S&F product or an affiliate product under another name in the S&F corporation. With all the complaints, you would think they would become a better company and right their wrongs. Shame on them.

It involves taking pictures and measurements and then emailing them to Sears. The instructions state that anything less than a 1.5 inch sag will not be considered a defect. What this tells me is that after spending $1,800 for a mattress that sags after 2 months, I must endure discomfort for another 0.5 inches and then hope that Stearns and Foster will honor the warranty. Opinion: After reading many complaints, Stearns and Foster and Sears are aware of this product defect. I will never buy a Stearns and Foster mattress again and will urge others to do the same. Sears should protect its reputation and cease selling Stearns and Foster.

I purchased or exchanged a Stearns and Foster "Shiela" mattress on June 22, 2012. Within a month there was a pronounced sagging at the hip level. It began to affect my back and hip. I normally sleep on my left side, but the pain is too much. When I sit on the side of the mattress, I can feel the springs and a lumpy bedding. There is no edge support and it compresses several inches when I sit on it. I weigh 170 and certainly the mattress should support that weight with no sagging. Now, my wife is beginning to find the same thing on her side of the bed. The mattress was purchased from Ashley. I will see them this week and see what they will do. This is the third mattress I have bought from them and the third that has turned out to be garbage.

I bought S&F Newgate LXF queen box/mattress. Within five to six months into it, the mattress started sagging throughout. No support. It was not the most expensive mattress that S&F sells, but that shouldn't mean the mattress should have started having problems so soon. A mattress inspector came and said it was 1/2 an inch short of being able to be considered defective. Yet, he said the box spring has already failed. I want a more satisfactory response from the manufacturer than the answer that I have already been given - to wait until the mattress is a little more defective before they come back. I wouldn't recommend this mattress to any of my friends.

We purchased a $1,800.00 Stearns & Foster mattress set a little less than 2 years ago (with a 20 year warranty). What a joke. The mattress had body impressions and we were both experiencing back and neck pain, unable to sleep through the night. S&F came out and inspected the mattress and said there was nothing wrong with it. Therefore, there was no recourse we could take. Luckily, we had an awesome salesman at Haverty's who went to his manager and authorized a full refund through their store. We were able to exchange our mattress set for a Tempurpedic set (which we are very happy with). Sadly, this is the second time we tried a Stearns & Foster (blaming the bed for our problem the first time). We will never make that mistake again nor would we recommend Stearns & Foster to anyone. They do not stand behind their product.

Finally, I called for their wonderful warranty service. Tech came today. They did this scam measurement that rarely I feel reflects a problem, but guess what? - We are at 1.5 inches of sagging. Not bad considering I sag 7 inches laying on the pathetic mattress! Tech said yes, it is defective. He called Macy's from our home phone and handed the phone to me. He bolted out of the house, then the Macy rep told me there is no warranty because of a stain on the mattress in the contour. What is she talking about? There is a small stain 4ft from where his depth measurement confirmed a defective mattress 5 minutes ago. It appears to be a coffee spill but it was extremely small. I told her this stain is nowhere near where the measurement was taken, period. Then I asked her what is the contour of the bed. She does not even understand the word to explain it to me!

We purchased a brand new Stearns and Foster mattress and box spring about 7 years ago for around $1500. What a huge mistake! Since we are both heavy people, we thought we would purchase the Cadillac of the line. The salesman told us to rotate the mattress 1/4 turn every month which we did. After about 1 year, the mattress started dipping on both sides and receiving a hump in the middle. I went to the company where we bought it and would have to pay $50 to have someone come out to look at it, which we did. The warranty was not honored because we did not realize we had to have 5 support boards underneath the box spring. We only have 3 which came with the bed frame when we purchased that.

It would have been nice if the delivery men would have mentioned the fact that we do need 5 support boards for Stearns and Foster sets. It would be nice if they were carried on the truck for that purpose. Later, we found out that we can't even flip the mattress because all you see is boards on the underside. And not only that but those boards now croak and groan when you toss and turn which would wake someone up in the next room if the bedrooms were back to back. If we had any children or guests, you would not want to get intimate with your spouse for fear of waking them up. It was a real total waste of an investment. Don't waste your hard earned money.

It is killing my back. The one I replaced this one with I had for 20 plus years and it was in better condition than this one that is only 4 months old. We could not complain for 30 days, but we have 60 days to do so. We are now in the second 30 day period. I visited the store yesterday and, of course, there was a different salesperson on duty. She was a "stonewall". She told me the "Comfort Guarantee" allowed the exchange of the mattress for in the neighborhood of another $280 but that we could not exchange more than once. (That's a guarantee? We pay, get the same or another mattress and have no recourse if the second one is bad? ) She then explained the Strearns warranty, the 1 1/2 inch deep rule or it is not defective. We were told by the salesperson who sold us the bed that if we had a problem just bring it back and pointed to the "60 day" sign on the wall. He did not tell us the fine print. We trusted him.

Big mistake. He did not tell us the whole story. The long and short of it is that we have a king bed that looks awful when made up because the troughs are so obvious (in spite of the bedspread). We are not yet sure that the mattress is better than what we had before. So, a word to the wise: It is in the fine print and maximum diligence should be used when dealing with Mattress Discounters and Stearnes and Foster. Be sure you understand what's going on.

We have only slept on this "top of the line" mattress for about 3 months. We are getting the run around from Stearns and Foster. As in the other complaints on this site, they say the 1.5" rule of having a service tech from your retailer lay a metal rod on the bed and if a movable pin does not show a 1.5" dip in the mattress, 'Sorry, it isn't defective!'

We have other Stearns and Foster products that are older and have never had this problem before? Their recited answer is that the mattress material is made to "conform to your body to provide comfort and less movement in your sleep". Our retailer has labeled our problem as a "comfort problem", not a quality or defect problem? I am so glad this blog site exists, as everyone needs to realize what they say and what you get are clearly two different things. Sadly, I am going to have to wage some kind of battle to get what should be "quality" from Stearns and Foster.
