I have had the privilege of working with Veterans United on 3 occasions in the past 6 years. Each time I have work with them they have been very professional and a wonderful team to work with. They were always upfront in what they were telling you, and they made sure that you knew exactly what was going on. They keep me abreast during each step of the process to get my loan approved. There was no question too small that they would have a problem in explaining to you.

I had an overall great experience with Veterans United and the entire process of closing on our new home. Our lender Mitch ** was a joy to work with and was great about dealing with my one million weekly questions and need to be overly thorough, to the point of almost tedious. I'm a very organized person and need to know and understand every last little thing, especially when dealing with something as huge and life changing as buying a house. Mitch was patient and great about making me feel comfortable.
The closing process went smoothly and we closed on time, which is all I could really ask for. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5, is because Veterans United did have the highest interest rate compared to another lender we spoke to. A 3.875 vs a 3.3%. We chose to stick with Veterans United due to our needed time frame however and just purchased mortgage points to bring our rate down from the 3.875% to a 3.6%. I feel their rates could be a little more competitive, however aside from that, the process was smooth and worry free for the most part. I would recommend them to others.

Getting a loan through these folks was easy. My loan guy was friendly and returned calls and emails promptly. I was happy. Fast forward a few years. The way the administration office handled my husband's death was a horrible experience. First I get an email that said we need a court document proving I inherit. They made it sound like I was about to lose my home too! I emailed them back because I knew that wasn’t correct. Then I get an email where they say, "Oh ok. You don’t need to send us anything, but if you want your husband's name removed, you need to write to this department instead". Huh?
You guys don’t talk to other departments and I can only write them? No email or phone number included. And here’s the thing: no widow wants to be asked “do you want to remove your husband's name” because the answer is no! I don’t want to remove his name or his things or that almost 40 years we spent together. I’m just trying to do all the things the funeral home told me to do. When I emailed the guy who helped me get the loan, he says, "Gee I’m sorry." I guess I was expecting him to say, "I will make sure your comments are forwarded to the right department." Nope. He did his job, now move along.
Yesterday I get a packet from them. "Dear customer, it is critical you work with us on a resolution for any issues that affect your ability to make timely mortgage payments." They enclosed a check list and several pages of an application. I have never been late or missed a payment. I can only assume that now I’m a widow, I am no longer reliable. Do widowers get the same treatment? Somehow I doubt it. I find it all highly insulting. I have my homeowners and auto with USAA who assigned a real person to help me. I even got a handwritten sympathy card from the CEO. Veterans United could learn a thing or two from them.

We contacted them and they worked with us. The agent was responsive and tried to get a check to us quickly to clean up the feces water that was covering several areas of our home. But hold up, Veterans United stepped in and insisted that their name be added to the check along with my name and my wife name.
Then, Veterans United demanded we sign over the check to them and insisted they will not sign the check over to us. So, after two weeks we gave in, after all we are the ones sitting in feces water and need repairs to our house. We then asked Veterans for our money to do the repairs and we were told we must complete the repairs and then they will refund the amount of check over to us. So now we are in a bad position. Three months and $18,000 out of pocket expense our repairs were completed. Of course we fell behind on our mortgage trying to fix our home. But we had some security under the VA hurricane plan. We begged Veterans United for our refund to apply to our home and that took another three months or so. Then they put us on this plan that paid our mortgage and about 300 towards the past balance, again a plan offered by the VA. However, every month the plan cancel and we were required to pay more money.
This went on for six months and caused major frustrations. Veterans United began coming more and more difficult to work with and tried to get us to accept one of their loan modification plan even though we were meeting the terms of the plan under the VA hurricane plan. We continued to refuse and they continued to be difficult. Finally, they filed a foreclosure on our property even though they were telling us that they were not going to foreclose for $9000. Once we received the notice from their attorney, we got no notice from them that they filed a foreclosure, we filed bankruptcy to stop the foreclosure. This made the true colors of Veterans United show. They went from saying, "Thank you for your service to our country," to "You will need to call back. We cannot help you right now." They are still the holder of our mortgage but we cannot speak to anyone and our calls get the same attention each time we call, none.
So why are they treating us this way? We purchased our home with $40K in equity and the equity is now over 100K so they did everything to undermine us and steal our home. Even after filing bankruptcy they tried to offer a loan modification rather than us filing bankruptcy but we knew better than to fall for any more of their tricks. And because all their attempts to take our home has failed they have added all sorts of fees to our monthly bill to try and make it difficult for us to pay the mortgage but if we have to go without light, gas, food, or water, they will never get our home.
Think twice before you sign with them, take your documents to an independent attorney for review if you do, and be mindful about anything and everything you sign. Oh, and they have shut us out of online access to pay our bill but that's ok because we prefer to send a certified money order. We wish you the best in your purchase.

Before going into the underwriting phase I was introduced to the specialist that would be guiding me through that step. He did very well in explaining what was to be expected and what I would need. All needed documents were listed in my “To do” lost and I was able to upload them right away. At the end of the day the underwriting process was smooth and not an issue at all! May be frustrating to deal with the process but the app made it easier and the representatives helped a lot in this instance. I would not have been able to get by without them assisting me. Top notch individuals! Would recommend without a doubt!

Jenna ** along with Veterans United did an amazing job. They made it so simple to stay on track during our qualification process. We never had to wait but a few minutes for a response to the many questions we had along the way, and most of the time our calls were answered directly by Jenna. She made our first home buying experience so much less stressful than I had anticipated. She made sure everything was in order before moving forward to ensure we wouldn’t have any unreasonable expectations. Once everything was complete we were amazed at how little our upfront costs were as well as the future services we will receive just by being a part of Veterans United. Jenna as well as our realtor Adrienne and our entire loan team at Veterans United come highly recommend by me and my family. We could not be happier with our experience.

Even when we hit snags with the seller they stayed focused and made it to closing on time.

I'm not one for hyperbole but my loan team was flat out outstanding and made the process incredible easy for me. One of the reasons I chose VU was because of the great feedback I had heard in regards to customer service and understanding of the needs of military home buyers. Jonathan and his team did not disappoint in that regard. They were extremely professional, helpful and proactive throughout the home buying process and really made the process flow very smoothly and efficiently. I would unequivocally recommend VU to any and all military homebuyers.

They acted as if this was their first loan. Wasted three and one half months of my time. My loan was VA. And a very simple one. Refinance with plenty of equity and over 800 credit score. After 3.5 months of duplications, loss paperwork, they wanted me to start over because my information was too old. Before you consider these people you might want to google their legal problems with the states of New York and California. I closed with another company in 36 days.

I had the distinct pleasure and honor of working with my Loan Officer Eric **, and my Transaction Coordinator, Desi **. From the initial contact and loan application, all the way through closing, I felt I was on a high speed, fast track, ultra efficient, path to home ownership. As a matter of fact, had it not been for a third party provided document that had a typo that needed to be redone and resubmitted, start to close would have been accomplished in 17 days. Nonetheless, my team was able to, I was told, tie the record for quickest successful completion just over 20 days. I was blown away with the professionalism, efficiency, determination, and process knowledge of both Eric and Desi.
I also have to mention the web portal for uploading and reviewing documents, showing the status of your process, what an amazing feature to make the entire process so streamlined and efficient. From phone calls, text messages, emails, and their constant attention to detail on the web portal, my team was THE most incredible team anyone could ask for, I am grateful and appreciative! I SALUTE my team and Veterans United for being there every step of the way as they promised, I'm proud to say I am a Veteran Home Owner because of Eric, Desi, and Veterans United!

I am 30 weeks pregnant, did a 5 day road trip that ended late the night before closing day, had the flu for 2 weeks, and this was our third attempt to buy a house - and I STILL thought this whole process was awesome and easy and stress-free. I credit all of this to Angie and her staff, and the way Veterans United is set up online. As well as how most everything is uploaded for the preapproval process. I don't have anything to compare this experience to, but based on everything I've heard about how long, drawn out, and stressful buying a house is - we did not experience that with VU. Thank you!

I would not recommend VU to anyone. I was just another number to them. My process was contingent on the sale of another home. When my process took longer than normal, I was pushed aside and made to feel like a nuisance. I was told they would work on interest rates to compete with other quotes. That was a lie. Kept being told, "Not to worry about it, we are working on it." "Oh that rate is from the pre approval. It will adjust at the end." I had 4 closing cost changes in 7 days prior to closing. They said it was due to other groups (title company, homeowners insurance, etc).
My emails, documents and speaking with these places told a different story. They gave me the clear to close on Monday for Wednesday, text me Tuesday and changed my closing cost numbers. Wednesday I get an alert that things were added to my online portal THE DAY OF CLOSING. The title company did not receive the paperwork until 4 hours before I walked through the door. They dragged their feet on everything to the point where I had a choice, start the process over and potentially lose out on my house or suck it up and refinance somewhere else later. I receive better, faster service from the VA than I did with VU.

Think twice before using Veterans United home loans. We originally had a buyer who was pre-approved with them. After 21 days 12/18 they realized they didn't get VOE (originally close date 12/24) so they asked for an extension for 12/31 with a guarantee of close for them to come back on 12/28 to decline the buyer (after the buyer signed off all contingency) a week prior. What lender puts the buyer and seller through all this 2 days before we're suppose to close escrow! Luckily we're working things out with another lender who believes everything should work.

I did NOT buy a home with Veterans United Home loans. I was in the process of buying one and to their credit, it was going smoothly. They have a very user friendly portal in which you can upload required documentation, bank statements, w2s etc. I was under contract on a home and then Hurricane Michael happened. The home I was weeks away from closing on was completely destroyed. We were able to get out of the contract, but certain inspections/appraisals had already been done. We no longer had interest in buying a re-sale home and decided to not go with Veterans United anymore. They still charged us a full $450 for an appraisal on a home which was no longer standing!
I paid them the money I owed, however; I feel like given the circumstances they should have thrown us a bone and helped us out as we are already going through a ton as it is. But they did not, I guess to them we were just a number and lost revenue so they as well get what they could from us. I guarantee $450 means a lot more to a working class person than it does to a national lending corporation. But ohh well.

I closed on my house today no thanks to Veterans United. These folks sent me through 3 different loan Officers and 2 Hard Inquiries on my credit report on a 4 month period which significantly dropped my score. I started this roller coaster ride w/ Loan Officer Daniel in August. He went over my information and relayed me to the Lighthouse Program to help me get my credit up to 620, the program itself was helpful and straightforward when it comes to a plan of action. I followed the program and got my credit score pass the 620 mark in 2 months, I was cleared in mid-October and figured I'm back on track. I waited a week to hear anything. I sent Daniel a couple of emails with no response.
I eventually got a call from Loan Officer Jason saying Daniel is no longer with the company and he's my new loan officer, I then received my pre-approval letter for $220,000 and was congratulated by Jason. He informed me to start shopping for a house so I did. My wife and I found a house for $200,000 in early November and got a contingent contract signed. I relayed all the info to Jason and I never heard anything back for another week. I got a call from Loan Officer Harris early November and he said Loan Officer Jason is not Licensed to operate in TN and they thought I was looking for a house in GA (I told Veterans United on 3 different occasions that I am looking for houses in the tri-state area. AL, TN and GA).
Harris is apparently now my new Loan Officer and He told me he sent me an email introducing himself (never got it). He was quick to tell me that he is both Jason and Daniel's direct Supervisor and that I am in good hands. The very next day He told me my credit age is not good enough and my bank statements had negative balances so they cannot loan me anything after all. This information was not new as I had already provided my statements and credit history during the initial application process but for some reason Veterans United is just now finding out I cannot qualify and he did not even bother to send it through to underwriting.
His explanation was "I have been in this business long enough to know when a loan will get denied." I was told this after I was prequalified by Jason, was told to find a home, found the home, got under contract and paid the earnest money. Harris told me to check back w/ him in 6 to 8 mos and we will see. He then referred me again to the Lighthouse Program and that's the last I heard from any of these guys. I am well aware that I have nobody to blame but myself in regard to my financial and credit issues. The only thing I am frustrated about is getting the runaround, getting led on and lied to by this company. This is 4 months (Aug-Nov) of unneeded stress for a first time homebuyer coming from folks that work for a respectable company that deals with thousands of customers. One would expect that they should know what they are doing.
A local company got me closed in 1 month from when Veterans United dropped me like a hot potato (Nov 13- Dec 13). These folks were much more organized, had everything in order and they knew how to talk to people. They worked really hard for me instead of just passing me around the room then deciding I'm not worth their time like Veterans United did. I could have closed on a house 4 months earlier in August if I had steered clear from this company.

I received a preapproval letter and told that I was all set to find a home. After months of searching for a home, and paid for an inspection, the loan officer informed me that I need to show proof of bill paying. I was not informed that I needed to show checking account withdrawals for these payments. I have paperless accounts or use the option of paying at my local grocery store; therefore I could not show proof and for all of the payments. My landlord sent them a letter verifying that I am in good standing and amount paid as did the utility company. They claimed that was unacceptable and did not grant me the loan. I was mortified to have involved the realtor, the seller of the home and not to mention the time spent searching for a home, as well as the $374.00 that I am now at loss.
This company needs to be monitored on how they construct business. It is not right to lead people on and cost them money. Is this how we should treat our veterans? I suffered with an injury from the Vietnam War I did not need to suffer at the hands of some smart mouthed kid behind a desk! Please see that this does not happen to anyone else. Thank you.
