I had a Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) with Sovereign Bank which became Santander. Everything was great with Sovereign, but once Santander took over, everything went downhill - FAST! Twice they processed a regular monthly payment as a principal only payment which made my regular payments late! They refused to reverse these payments so not only was the payment late, but late fees were incurred. Finally, I had enough and requested a pay-off amount. Went to the branch with a bank check, and the teller at first didn't know how to process the pay-off payment and then couldn't find the loan in the system. Turns out she wrote the wrong account number down
The day after paying off the loan, I get a call from them indicating that I still owe late charges! Well, those weren't included in the pay-off amount they provided?!? I just paid the small amount to avoid the additional harassment. Very incompetent service. Not sure if it is training or the corporate culture. Please don't do business with them. You'll likely regret it. Suggest you run in the opposite direction!

We obtained a loan from Santander Consumer USA in July 2011. We have made payments every month on time since we obtained a loan. In June 2013, I was laid off so we communicated with Santander that we could only pay what we could afford at the time with a family of 4. They accepted these partial payments. My parents co-signed on the loan and then filed BK in 2013. Santander decided not to communicate with us by letter or phone calls about anything, yet my parent's lawyer had Santander remove them from the loan as soon as the BK went through. 2 weeks ago, I paid the minimum payment and yesterday our vehicle was recovered because of an overdue balance.
Santander decided that they would stick with the old contract because they "do not refinance." Now, we are stuck with paying the difference, paying a $400 towing fee, paying for a police report to give to the impound lot and $150 to the towing company to release the vehicle. All because Santander did not communicate because the original contract has a party that filed BK. I find this to be an abusive practice. We are done with Santander and are looking for someone else to refinance the remainder. We plan to participate in a lawsuit whether we file ourselves or join a class action. They need to get hit where it hurts and that is their bank account.

My mother in law and myself both opted for title loans on vehicles. WHAT A HUGE MISTAKE! My mother in law passed away April 2013, however, my wife continued paying the loan consistently every single month, never late! She however being the person she was, notified them of her mom's passing. 7 months passed with my wife paying the monthly installment. One night around 1:45 am in the morning we hear a knock on our door, puzzled we look at our security camera screen and see two people standing on our porch. Delirious, we both go to door. Two guys with a tow truck parked in front of the car, with lights flashing told us they were there to take car per Santander. We were SHOCKED! And embarrassed, knowing neighbors saw this crap!
We argued that the loan was current and not late, showing payments. They took the car anyway, was nothing we could do. It was pouring down, raining and we were both in pj's. When my wife called Santander fuming!! They told her, "you're right it's not past due," but apparently due to her mom passing wasn't sure if the loan would be continued to be paid! Are you ** serious! The loan was being paid on time 7 straight months after her passing! And would have continued to be. My wife paid that loan off immediately! Never again!
After 10 calls a day regarding my loan when only past due a few days, I decided to start looking for another lender to pay them off on my car. I couldn't take it anymore. I got a $10k loan, paid $437 for almost 2 yrs and the balance was still $9975. Are you serious!! I tried to refi with other lenders but they would not do it because of the payoff difference in the balance and the amount owed! I thought I was trapped, and would end up with multiple calls daily and paying over $7500 in interest over the course of the remaining term. With my calculations, I would be paying more in interest than the car was worth alone.
One day I get a flyer for a personal loan from NET CREDIT, I said, "what the hell apply and see what happens." I applied and was approved for $9950. I immediately added the add'l money to pay off these crooks and now waiting on my pink slip. In addition they quoted me the wrong payoff. They owe me $157 and waiting for that and my pink slip for my second car I barely drive, practically new. I'm saving about $8000 in interest with Net Credit and payments are only $299. No title loan but a personal loan!

I was awaken by a loud noise @ 11:16pm (3 hours ago). My car was being uploaded until a tow truck. I have been laid off more times than I can count within the last 2 years. However, I've kept Santander in the loop at all times. I just started a new job last Monday on the 5th of May, and I will have a full paycheck on May 23rd. I even worked overtime because I need to pay so many bills. Well because I was only 59 days late on my car payment, Santander told me that I was not on the repo list. Well who in the heck just towed my car!!!??? This place is unbelievable. People beware. I told this loan when offered because no one else would give me a loan. Yes at the time it seemed like the right thing to do because I'm a very responsible person. However, I can't control layoffs. Due to layoffs my savings is non-existent. So here I am with no damn car. As much as I need it, I'm kind of glad that I'm done with Santander, and I no longer have a car that's worth $9K but I owe $15K.

Called Santander to get help with the car. One rep told me they could lower my payment for 6 months and they would need to place me on hold. The line dropped. Called back, spoke to an offshore agent. Said my account was ineligible for any assistance. I told them to lower their payments and interest or come pick up the car. The girl said someone would call "right away". Still waiting for the call... Car is still outside -- 2 weeks later.
Was paying 378.49 for the last 18 months and never late once. Financed 15,000 for the car, they want 14,500 for the pay off. So, I've paid roughly 379 a month for 18 months, and it has only taken 500 bucks off the car? Yeah. That adds up.

The story is long so I'll talk of the last 2 problems. First I had problems getting a debit card due to their own inability to update my address on several occasions!!! Yes several times! 2 years ago, a branch member suggested I open this so I did as it was explained there are no fees etc. However, shortly after I found it had a $5K max monthly withdraw limit. Since this would not work for me, I transferred all funds out ASAP. 2 years later, I'm told this $5K limit did not apply. I then asked about fees, etc and was told the only thing I needed to be aware of was to maintain a min. of $100 a month auto deposit.
With the new info in hand, I transferred some funds in it. 3 days later I get whacked with a maintenance fee. A phone call drew the response of, "I'll talk to the manager". A week passed and nothing was done so I sent them a letter. My letter drew a phone call but no actions! I believe Santander Bank is run by a bunch of crooks! That's my opinion! I never had such communication issues with my other banks. Funds from Santander are, as I write this being transferred to one of my other banks So long Santander. When it was run by Sovereign, the issues were seldom.

My auto financing was transferred from Capital One to Santander Consumer and I have had nothing but trouble with this company. To date, May 13, 2014, I am not able to contact this company or speak with a representative. I am employed by the Federal Government, and last year government employees were furloughed twice from July to December, 2013. I sought assistance from Santander Consumer to modify my loan until the furlough ended. Santander approved the modification and I made timely payments but I am reported late to the credit bureaus, my loan's maturity date keeps changing and I have unpaid fees and charges that are increasing and that are not accurate.
Recently, in the past month, I started doubling my payments and the last account statement I received dated May 5, 2014 does not reflect recent payments. When I call Santander Consumer, I get an automated line. The authenticity is never verified (though I have complained to the company in the past that the automated line does not recognize my information) and eventually my call is transferred over to speak with a representative and I am hung up on. I try to access my online account at MyAutoAccount.com and I am locked out. There is no e-mail to contact the company to discuss the erroneous unpaid fees and charges, and charges continue to increase.

Never ends. I am also having the same issue. I purchased my car in 2007 and still owe $15,00.00 on my car. When I spoke with a Santander rep he pretty much told me to refinance because the type of loan I have they will continue to find a way for me to be in debt to them. Problem is I have too many miles to refinance. I know better next time.

This company is breaking anti-trust laws. They keep changing people's maturity dates on their loans and keep using add-on interest for late payments. This is just bunch of BS. They are owned by a a company outside USA and think they can get away with abusing people. My maturity date keeps changing each month and this is just BS. If you ever get offered loans from this company, refuse anything to do with this company.

I've been paying on my car for the last 6 years and the maturity date for the loan was suppose to have been last November. The maturity date was changed to a maturity of January 2014 as I had my payment deferred twice during the life of the loan! The loan should have been paid in full by January of this year, however, now at the end of April 2014, I still owe over $7500 and for the life of me I can't figure out how they got to this amount still owing. I've also spoken to numerous folks there, only to obtain erroneous information.... Right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing!
Tell me how they compounded the interest, or at what interest rate they are charging in order to still be owing such a HUGE amount.... All this over having an approved deferral twice only? The only information that makes sense, and has been told by a Santander representative to me, is that they continue to report you as late.... along with the penalties and late fees, EVEN IF YOU MAKE THE REST OF YOUR PAYMENTS BY THE DUE DATE!!!!!!! I tried speaking with a few "managers" and ALL have told me that they NEVER ever settle debts, as I was hoping to just payoff the remainder but was hoping that they would settle at a lesser amount since WE all know that these tactics are borderlining USURY predatory lending!!!!
I will also be lodging a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, as well as, contacting the attorney office of Norris and Davis, who I understand have filed a civil lawsuit against Santander!!!!

I visited the Santander Bank in Townsend, MA on Saturday, April 26th at about 9:45 AM, to cash a check drawn from a Santander Bank account. Since I don't have an account there, I went in to the lobby. While waiting for my turn (less than 10 minutes), I witnessed three in-lobby customer/bank employee interactions, all of which were unsettling. The first was an elderly lady almost in tears because her recent deposit of approx. $8,000 somehow was missing (she had paperwork to support her claim but the teller seemed completely disinterested or incompetent in helping her). The second was a person who came in and asked to use the restroom and was rudely told "NO". The third was another woman who had questions about her account, and the bank employee told her at least three times "I don't know", before it was my turn.
The teller that waited on me informed me there was a $6 fee for cashing the check. I responded "Are you serious?" She said "Yes, unless you want to open an account." I told her "There's no way I would open an account here- you're not friendly or helpful." The teller finished my transaction by only counting back my money; with not even a pleasantry, let alone asking me why I expressed a negative view of the bank. It seemed she was either completely apathetic, or that she may have been so used to customer dissatisfaction, it was a routine thing. Wow- I'm just astounded at the lack of care or concern they displayed. Thank goodness I bank with a different bank!

It is now 3/2014 and Santander is telling me that I owe them $10,483.28 which means that over the 6 and a 1/2 years that I have been making payments, they only took off $4,077.13. I admit I had some late payments but this is ridiculous. My contract with them matures on Oct. 2014 and I owe that much. I am pissed. I will definitely look up the civil suit against them, but I don't want to give them another penny and now I am having problems getting the vehicle refinanced. Urgg! I really need some help! I bought a 2008 cobalt brand new. I was financed thru drive financial whom then later sold it to Santander. I filed bankruptcy in 2009 and reaffirmed my car loan of payments of 478.50 a month, rip off 25% interest rate daily interest. I paid on time for 2 1/2 years and I thought I was rebuilding my credit and I went to purchase a different vehicle thru GM and could not get a loan. No car loan showed up on my credit report so I had no credit history since my bankruptcy. SO I went to another dealer to see if it came up again and they stated the same thing.
I called Santander and they had no record of the bankruptcy or agreement, but still taking my payments for 21/2 years. I lost my job and had to miss a few payments and they then started calling and reporting my payments to the credit bureau. Now they have ruined my credit even more and financial image but when paying on time for 2/12 years they didn't report it. I am very angry and upset. Now I have not paid on this for 1 year and told them a year ago to come and get the vehicle with a balance of still $5500.00 and they still have not picked up the car. They wanted me to refinance with a lower payment but lock me in for three years so I would end paying even more for the car. I already paid over $21000.00 when the loan was for $18,000. Now they want another $8000.00. Scammers, count me in the civil suit.

I bought a vehicle from a local car dealership. The dealership turned the car loan over to Santander for the financing. After financing for a couple of months, I paid the vehicle off. I wrote a check on the 25th of Feb and it cleared my bank on 3 March. I called Santander to confirm that they received the check and they said they did. I asked what was next and they replied that I would get a check for approximately 43 to 45 dollars. A couple of weeks went by and I didn't hear anything from Santander. So I called and got an automated line asking for my account number or social security number. I tried both options several times and the automated system replied that it could not find any record of the numbers I entered.

Now after a branch manager incorrectly told another manager that I was going out of business, this has spiraled into a nightmare of epic proportions!! I agreed that I was going to pay the loan back in full and they sent my account to the "work out" division before it goes to collections. I had 3 appointments with the branch managers who acted as if they wanted to help and did nothing but sit back and watch as this got closer to default every month. I tried to fix this for 6 months before getting to where I am now. At this point I must have my attorney act on my behalf. I got a car about a year ago now financed through Santander Consumer... I was injured at work and since it has caused a disability and I am still out. I am not getting my full wages that I was making when I first got the car due to worker's comp etc.... Which I have let them know about. They haven't wanted to work with me. I told them I would like to change my payment date to possibly make paying easier on me financially so I could split the payments up. No... You already changed the date in the past.. Well, this is because of my disability and the change in pay schedules. No... The policy is for 1 due date change for the life of the loan...
I contacted the Attorney General in my state who was completely worthless like usual. They don't work for the consumer... Santander just sent them a copy of my loan agreement and said it is their policy and the Attorney General's Office didn't seem to care that they were discriminating based on my disability. So that went nowhere. I asked for a payment skip for 2 months which every loan has this ability. Yet, no one will tell you about. I had to ask for it actually after the guy was arguing with me on the phone about paying with money I didn't have at the time. I know about this because the President of Santander handled this for my girlfriend when she was between jobs.. The little people below say no, but when you go high enough they tend to say yes more. It was awkward for my wife to get a call from the President of Santander telling her that her request was approved.
After my two month payment extension was up I made payment. Since my payment schedule is off, I am now late every month... Which I brought this to the attention of the Attorney General's Office which they ignored.. Santander, is intentionally making me late every month and then tacking on late fees.. Also reporting this to the bureaus. When I went to make my payment last month they actually programmed their payment server to reject partial payments from me... When the month prior I made separate payments like that through their payment server. They argued that it was a error. Yet, it still reads the same after a month. They are trying to find ways to reject any kinds of payments from me so they can tack on charges.
I made payment for two full months with it all going to interest... $588.90 a month. That's insane. I split up my payments which really ticked them off because my balance started to fall due to this. I made 3 payments of $200.00 every few days. This stops the interest from compiling.. Every few days. They have yet to post my payment on the site today when it has already cleared my bank account... Typical stacking interest even though my payment went through. Thieves I tell you...

The bank showed I had 2 Vehicles and the Bank denied me getting a lower interest rate. Also... Santander put my name as the primary owner. Never have I ever stepped foot in this vehicle... insure it ... or ever drove it.
I have gone through Lexington Law to repair my credit score. Santander will not acknowledge any correspondence. They would call me 3 to 6 times a day and harass me. The last correspondence I had with them is that they told me the other party told them to repo the car... I am still getting bills from them and I am still paying good money for credit repair. They took my credit score from 730 and brought it down to 688 and they still refuse to cooperate. Meanwhile I can't refinance any of my loans or credit cards. First of all, I would like to clarify that a debt is a debt. I pretty much understand that when you owe you need to pay. That's not an issue with me at all, always intend to pay and I have been paying. The issue started when I changed jobs and I started getting paid twice a month. I spoke to a rep and I explained that my income had changed and that I was getting paid twice a month. And that, I wanted to find a way that I could pay my mortgage at the end of the month. Ok that didn't work it can't be done according to them, I would have to modify.
Let me clarify that I specifically stated that I would bring my mortgage back to date as soon as I got my income taxes, so I would have to pay two weeks behind every month for the next two months. The phone calls kept happening (that's fine they are doing their job as far as I'm concern), but not when the rep calls you and treats you in a very hostile manner making you feel like you are a delinquent. This rep was extremely rude, demanding payment like it was his own money. My husband try to put me on the phone since I'm the one that handles the payments and he told me that he didn't needed to talk to me, that he was not going to add my information all over again, so he refused to talk to me.
He double questioned everything my husband was saying to him extremely rude employing that my husband was lying. My husband asked to speak to a supervisor and he never transferred him, he questioned "for what?" And when asked his name he didn't want to give his full name either. Long story short, my husband called back and spoke to the so called manager. And the manager told him "we'll look into it but there's nothing we can do," yeah that was the manager. I guess when it comes to Santander costumer is never first.
That was a great answer for a person in charge. Like I say, I pay my debts it was only behind for two weeks there was no need for all of that. Did I mention that there was no recognition of my previous conversation with a rep where I explained my situation? Extremely disappointed! And to think that I have 28 years left... Anyways, this is not the first time that they are rude for the most part they are.

I just to say I'm pretty lucky that I got a loan through Santander. I applied through road loans with a 532 credit score. One 500$ down with a 24 line of credit. I was in a bind at the time and made the smart decision to buy a cheaper vehicle (06 Colorado) from CarMax for 11k. I've had the loan for 1 year now and since run into some more hard times. Santander will call you every day, but you owe them money so at least there's a reason. They've been helpful accepting a late payment 3 months out.
My first deferral was declined because I was 74 days late. I made a payment and submitted another deferral request that was approved today. If you are honest with them they still work with you. They keep track of your honesty and have done an outstanding job for me. I am back on track and just wanted to say that this company helped me out when my own bank was sending me away. Good luck and I hope you treat this company good because they are one of the few helping people out in this economy.

Made 72 payments (last payment 2/14/2014) on the car & Santander is still saying WE OWE a balance of $1200..Account balance $2000. I spoke to a manager..He asked if I wanted to surrender the car & I said NO! He looked at my account and said that he sees a problem with my account and he would call me back. No call back. I have different pay off amounts and none of them are right in my opinion. The most I owe them is 480 in fees. Online account says a payment is due of 955. When I call the automated it says 721.00. Not sure how they are coming up with these figures. They have sent me a default notice to pay off the car by the end of Feb. I was told to ignore it that it was sent in error...never have gotten one from them before. I asked for some thing in writing to say that it was sent in error..nothing.
I asked for a break down of the charges..Nothing. I asked them to refinance...just so I could have something in writing & they wouldn't take the car. They said they do not refinance. They have told me to just keep making my payments. Everyday my payoff seems to go up. I am never going to get it paid off! I questioned this and was told it only goes up .50 a day..not from the amounts I am hearing on the automated line. I have questioned the pay off for 5 months now & was told that it would get worked out. I am at a loss on what to do. If I keep making payments & the closer I get to paying it off I am worried they are going to come get the car. If I don't make the payments because I don't agree with the payoff amounts they are going to come get the car. Some thing needs to be done to stop this company from doing this to people. It's unfair that they can get away with this!

I had to pay over US$1,550 in fees and charges for my student son who had an account open with this bank for 60 days and received 48 charges of US$35 for withdrawing as low as US$10 when he had no money in the bank. The bank was requested to put in place a US$250 overdraft limit... Not only did the bank NOT do this, they also did not cut the account until it had incurred a month's (30 days) worth of charges. When discussing the problem with the manager in charge of the account I was informed..... "that is how the bank makes its money...."
This is a dangerous bank. They set up shop at universities and other public places then fleece clients out of hard earned money. I will never deal with this bank again, and I encourage all of you to stop using this bank as its operating practices are not above board.

When talking to the rep today, she talked in circles and just said "As long as you make the remaining payments on time you'll have a -0- balance as of May." Something made me look up complaints and I came across TONS of them on this site, with the same issue I'm probably going to have in a few months. Like others mentioned, a large % of many payments was applied to interest rather than principal, and the amounts are all over the place. HELP!! What can we do?? Seeing a whole lot of complaints for same issue I'm having. If this many people are literally being ripped off, where is the protection to the consumers?! As many, my maturity date was 1-26-14 on my car. So how is it that as of 2-7-14 I still owe 1800.00? The full amts of payments have been made to satisfy the note and several times have made over min. due payment. The payment that shows on statements have always been made as stated of "what's owed", so where and why have if it's due to interest or added fees are those not on the monthly statements nor included in the monthly payment owed on the statements?! This is ridiculous and their customer service is worthless like all others, nothing but the run around.
How can they get away with this? And even though maturity date is exceeded and the full amt. of payments per the contract have been made, we the consumer are at their mercy continuing to have to pay, pay, pay and pay some more or worry about repo man showing up. This is NOT right! There has got to be a way for the regular average person to do that cannot afford to get a layer involved. Run, Run far away before agreeing to any loan with this company! Where's their legal binding to a maturity date if you can prove that EVERY payment was made?! I pray that these vultures get what's coming to them.
There's been a couple of times in which my normal due date of 4th I'd not be able to pay till min. couple days after due to check rotations... Each time that happens their company calls literally have proof min. of 12 times a day starting on the 4th when it is due. This company is awful! and if I pay 2 days past my due date, somehow my payment goes from 296.00 to supposedly owing almost 400.00. How does that work?! Again, this company is not right!

After making 71 payments for a total of $26,753.51 we were told that there still a balance due of $9944.82. So after making this many payments only $4,955.18 has gone to the principal. So according to them, you just keep paying them until it's a zero balance. I told the lady you all are only due 1 more payment and I don't know what is going to happen to that high balance that's left because clearly after the 72nd payment I will be done Santander according to the signed contract. Santander bought the loan on our motorhome from GE who bought it from our original lender. First thing they tried was to collect a late fee we didn't owe on our first payment to the original lender. That took almost a month to correct. Then they tried to collect a late fee for the first month they had the loan. They finally agree to remove that. After trying for 2 years to sell the motorhome, we called Santander to ask about refinancing. Our financial situation had changed and we could no longer afford the payments. We were told they would not talk to us at all unless we stopped making payment and they threatened to make sure it was reported to the credit bureau. We continued to make payments, never missed, never late for another year.
We could not find other financing because of its age. We finally decided to stop making payments like they said. I sent them 3 letters of intent before we stopped the payments. I had no response from them. The day after the legal time to start repossession had passed they called me. They claimed they had only received the last letter but had info that was only in a previous letter. They suggested we do a voluntary surrender. Research showed that this should reflect better on our credit report. We agree and were supposed to hear from a company that arranged pick ups. We never heard so I called and got the company number. I made the arrangements myself.
Santander said they would supply me with a form that said it was a voluntary surrender. That never happened. I finally got a copy from the towing company, filled it out and sent copies to them and to Santander. In the meantime we received a statement and a form letter Santander sent to the wrong address. We had never used this address with them and I don't know where they got it. I believe mailing it to the wrong address was intentional. All our previous statements were sent to our current address. The form letter was to inform us they were repossessing our vehicle. No mention of the voluntary surrender. This was the last thing in writing we ever got from them.
About a month after they picked the motorhome up we got a call from someone at Santander. His purpose was to collect the balance owed on our loan. According to him we had a balance of about $19 thousand but he couldn't tell us the exact amount they got at auction or the costs involved. He promised to send us a final statement. I made sure they had the correct address. He then negotiated a settlement on the balance. It only took a few minutes to agree on $7200. I then made payment with my credit card and kept him on the line while I spoke to my bank to make sure they got their money. Before doing this, I insisted on an e-mail from Santander with the settlement info. I told them I wouldn't pay until I had this.
I have a copy of this e-mail and statements from my bank showing we paid. I was promised a closing statement within 10 days. Never saw it. Called and was given some weak excuse and promised again by the end of the month. Called again after that and another promise was made and broken. They reported to the credit bureau that it was a repo. I got that corrected. Then they added $17 thousand to my report as balance owed to them and $10 thousand to my husband's. Together they don't add up to anything we ever owed. I showed proof to the credit bureau that our balance was zero and they removed these balances. But it had all ready done damage to our credit and that never changed. We dropped almost a hundred points.
It's been a year and we have never heard another thing from Santander. I have kept copies of everything including pictures I took of an online chat that wouldn't print and notes I took. Do not trust this company. It should be a crime that this Spanish-owned bank is allowed to do business in the US. After reading many complaints I wonder who they are paying off to stay in business in our country?

I currently have an Auto Loan with Santander as part of a Loan Modification since 5/2010. The beginning balance started as $23233 5/16/2010 with a final payment (Maturity Date) due 8/15/2015. I have had one deferment in 2011 and have always made my payments on time. My balance is $17300 as of today! With a final payoff in about 1 1/2 yrs, this will NOT be paid in full. I reviewed my payment history from day one of the loan - on their website and was BLOWN AWAY to see my payments applied so inconsistently to both Interest and Principal, with some months only to interest.
I called Santander yesterday (1/8/13) and stated that I am very concerned that this loan is not going to get paid off by the maturity date and would have a Balloon Payment upon final due date. The Call Center Rep stated that it was "simple Interest". I advised her that I fully understand how simple interest works and further explained my good payment history and this clearly doesn't make sense. I stated to her that I worked in the Loan industry and this is operating as a Credit Card, not a simple interest Auto Loan. I also stated that I have 2 other car loans with my Credit Union that are in fact simple interest and clearly can see how my payments are supposed to be applied. I told her that in order to pay off this loan by the maturity date that I would have to be paying $1000 per month with zero interest!
The Rep stated that I shouldn't worry about a balloon payment as Santander will keep my loan open until paid in full and she understood what I was saying. I told her loans have a maturity date for a reason - it's a TERM Loan - no auto loan just continues on and on for years if you are making your payments on time. I asked that someone within their company review my account and payment history as we are talking about a difference of THOUSANDS of Dollars . The Rep stated she could see what I was saying and placed me on a very long hold. When she came back she said sorry, "we" are trying to find copies of your contract, please continue to hold. I was on hold a while longer and she came back stating that "we" are going to get to the bottom of this and send it to "our" Accounting Dept. and to allow 72hours/3 days and call back to check the status. I agreed to do so.
After that I researched complaints just to see if anything was out there and, to my unhappy surprise, found this website with tons of people in the same situation. After reading many consumer complaints, I lost any hope I had just moments before... I then did my own auto loan calculations and confirmed my thinking... My balance should be in the range of $7500-8000, not $17300! I'm just sick with this as I am being held hostage to this loan. I have wanted to sell this car in the last 2 years and couldn't due to the huge NEGATIVE Balance. IF they are to fix their calculation problem at least $9000-$10,000 would be gone and I can finally sell it! I researched the Website Consumerfinance.gov and during December alone there have been a lot of complaints about the same issue. I am willing to work with anyone who is in the same situation - They need to be FULLY INVESTIGATED.

I have now discovered and it made sense with my issue as well reading others... The dealer has you sign the contract which states APR of.... Then when you look at statements online, they are applying the amount of their choice to the loan or the interest, in most cases the interest. This is why when we all believe we have paid x amount of dollars x the 72 months, it seems correct. Then they say, "Oh it is simple interest"??? Well, where does this fall into place....? Actually nowhere because we didn't agree to that. That means and should only be agreed upon if you got a low APR, and close to nothing down... then end of terms 72 with them. You would have a buy out. Well that isn't the loan I signed up for!!!! This company is as crooked as the letter z!!!! I am going to use turbo court and see just what they are pulling. Will keep posted!!!

Wouldn't it be fair to honor the terms under which the client opened the account? Also, we had a loan forgiveness payment from the department of education directly deposited into the account. We immediately used the money to pay a bunch of bills. The department of education then made a clerical error and withdrew the sum they had deposited in our account. This resulted in hundreds of dollars in 'unavailable funds’ fees being taken from our account.
I went to the bank branch and met with the manager who told me she did not have the power to reverse any of the penalties and this was fair because "it wasn't Santander's mistake". She then gave me a 1-800 number to call. It wasn't until I broke down in tears (loudly proclaiming that Santander is a predatory company) that she offered to try to help. She got some of the fees reversed, but we still ended up about $250 poorer. Santander is the worst bank I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with.

Saturday night in the middle of the night my vehicle was taken. Sunday morning when I realized it I called the Sheriff to report a theft. They told me it had been repo'd. I was only 1.5 months late and just paid them 200.00 and was going to pay another 200.00 next week. I have been seriously ill this summer and lost my job. There was no notice, no consideration and of course I can do nothing about it on a Sunday. So, I have no vehicle in case I have to go to the hospital. I have had nothing but problems with Santander. I had personal property in my vehicle I needed along with my meds. They have always got their money.

Santander purchased my car loan from Citi. The first couple of years were for the most part ok. Some months, they would delay posting my payment for several days after receiving it. I know they had the payment because I always use USPS tracking. My payment is due on the 1st. My statements say the payment is due on the 1st but are dated for the 16th, which I usually get about the 20th; therefore, the payment is 20 days late when I get the bill. They would not correct this and the late pays were placed on my credit report. They also called me many times. The caller spoke very poor English. I will never use this company again.

So now insurance company calls me to tell me the amount they are saying is owed, they will send them a check so I said wait, I have a different amount on my last statement... We are both on the phone with them at this point. I have now after reading many stories on here... looking thru my online statements, as well as paper ones... in a year's time I have paid $3,456.75 in interest, and $957.56 to the actual loan!!!!! We lost our car in the hurricane last year and received pmt for it, so we figured we had to get a car so let's look for something and will be able to be rebuild our credit at the same time. Well $1500.00 for my trade in, $6,000 out of pocket with an extremely high interest but payments didn't seem so bad...
Well now that I have seen that this would have never been paid, I am pissed beyond belief... Some months, my payment went all to interest only!!!! How are they getting away with this... Made a year of payments, and insurance company sent them a check for basically what the original loan amount was for... Unreal... I do plan to fight like hell if anyone knows what is going on with them please let me know...

I signed up for a Santander Checking account and ATM card at a VETERAN'S event in Boston, MA. Because I am on Social Security I thought this would be good so that I could make deposits with this account. The government Debit Card, Direct Express, does not allow this. BIG MISTAKE!! The first time I attempted to use this at a US Post Office the card was declined. I went next door to the Santander Bank and customer service said they did not know what was wrong. I tried it again and same thing. So now I have to withdraw a large amount of cash to go pay my rent. I emailed them and got a letter which contained gibberish about anti-fraud, etc., etc. They never attempted to help me!! The second month, most recent, time I used it online to order a song on Google Play. It declined the sale, $1.99! Now my account is frozen until I go see customer service AGAIN! Santander is the WORST in service and WORST in customer service. I will go to the Veterans Administration on Monday and request that they never be allowed back at this annual Veterans' event!

Very recently, I bought a new car from Kia Auto and they financed with Santander Consumer USA. I was told that they were the best in the entire country by one of the finance advisors at Kia. This was my first payment and I did not wish for it to be late. They (Santander Consumer) told me that I had a ten-day grace period before my payment would be considered late. So I tried to make my payment online but the automated serv. would not allow my payment to go through. So, I had to send the payment by mail instead. This was the 22nd of Dec. and the payment was due on the 21st, but they would not accept my payment by phone for some reason. I wasn't too worried with the grace period and all; I figured that it would be there in two or three business days.
No one told me that they would be counting weekends, holidays, and yes, Sundays AS BEING LATE too.... Anyway, my payment still hasn't arrived according to them and it was not sent back to me; they are now charging me interest every day. I said to them that no one told me that you would be counting weekends, holidays, and Sundays and it's not located in my contract; but the supervisor said that they did and there's nothing that I can do about it (basically), so is that all? I am besides myself in disappointment!!
Where's the welcome to Santander???? Or We're sorry Mr. **; We will try and help you find your first payment by checking with other branches since Santander Consumers are located everywhere, all across the country!! I told them that I sent it to the PO Box on the outside of their envelope, but it's like they won't even check around for it; let's just charge him until it pops up somewhere in somebody's mailbox or something. I do not know what to do!! Can you help me in some way, please!!!

On 12-30-2013 our vehicle was repossessed for back payments that Santander said we owed. We filed chapter 13 bankruptcy approximately 2 years ago and had to change to chapter 7 later. Once the 13 was filed, our payments were lowered and taken out of my wife's paycheck. But once it was discharged in chapter 7 unknown to us, the payments went back to the original amount. We were never notified, they just kept taking our lower payment, otherwise we would have made those original payments. They used the excuse they could not notify us of this because of the bankruptcy laws. Not quite true - its their policy. They can interpret the law the way they want, according to our attorney. If this was true, why are they talking to us.
So they repossess our vehicle and got to charge us late fees, towing fees, etc. Then we find out this shouldn't have happened. They won't supply us with any statements of any kind, even at our request. We don't know where our money went and for what. We take them for what they say. Every time when you call, you get different answers, never the same person, and are never told you are behind. I don't want to see this happen to anyone else. Here is what anyone should do: 1. When dealing with them, document every transaction, phone call, letters, all with time and dates. 2. Send all payments by mail only, by check and certified.
If you have any complaints: 1. Contact your state representative on what's taking place. 2. File complaint with your state attorney general. 3. File a complaint with your state consumer protection agency. For a small fee they will give you a list of state complaints. One person cannot correct this problem. It takes all of us. If at all possible, find another company and refinance.

I didn't realize this was still sitting out here. In my experience, Santander was a great company to work with. Their customer service reps are polite and knowledgeable and if you get in a jam they'll do all they can do help you through it. Granted, their interest rates are pretty high but they issue sub-prime loans. If you have good credit steer clear of Santander as you'll be able to get a significantly lower cost loan from someone else.
But if you're trying to establish (or re-establish) your credit definitely give this company some consideration. Don't miss a payment, stay on time, get it paid off, and the next time you're shopping for a new car you'll be in good shape to pick up a low cost loan.

I purchased a Kia Optima in 2007. It was brand new and I got it for 16000. I was able to finance through Citibank Auto Finance for a period of 72 months with the payout being in July of 2013. We had bad financial problems a few months after purchasing the car and deferred a payment. The next thing I know, I received a letter stating that my loan had been sold to Santander and received another account number from them. I was unaware that a financial institution could sell your loan to another lender without your knowledge or consent. I have had to ask for 2 more deferments and received with no problem.
It is now December of 2013 and they say my balance is still over 10000. How can that be when it was to be paid off in July??? These people start out nice and suck you in until they get you so twisted around you don't know which way is up. I have signed no paperwork with this institution agreeing to any terms or contract at all. I have no idea what to do short of blowing up the car and letting the insurance companies sort it out. But that would put me in the same category as them. Any solution to this problem is welcome.

Every payment you make will be posted incorrectly. Even when the payments are 2 weeks early, they will apply the whole amount or almost the entire amount to INTEREST, and nothing to principal balance. Of course your loan never gets paid down! When you call there the CS agents are trained to tell you how simple interest loans work and try to make you think you are wrong. I know how simple interest works. You pay interest for each day of the cycle you are using their money. If you pay at the last minute, or even late, yes most would probably go to interest and not principal balance. If you are ever late you would also have late fees and possible penalties involved. I am talking about when your payment is always 2-3 weeks early, and still they apply it all to interest, leaving the principal amount due/owed unchanged. Additionally, I pre-pay my account by 100.00 every month in an effort to get rid of Santander. They will even apply the extra 100.00 bucks, paid 11-18 days in advance of any due date, to interest only.
Every month I watch my account, and make screen prints of all activity. Also, I use the chat function for complaining to them, rather than phone calls. This way you can print their meaningless and incorrect comments and explanations, and keep this in your records. Lastly, I filed complaints with the Federal Consumer Fraud Protection office as well as the Attorney General in my State, and The better business bureau, although Santander does not really care.

He signed an agreement to assume payments. This was done without my knowledge or consent. I have the notarized agreement. Of course, ** never made any payments. We helped the lending institution locate and repossessed the truck in Ariz. It was sold by this financial company. The initial lending institution went out of business and was taken over by Santander. Santander began calling, harassing, verbally abusing and generally behaving like thugs over the phone. I sent them a check, which they have never credited us for. I have received one statement from them over 5 or so years. I have sent them copies of the sales agreement with ** and from the first lender. I have asked them to stop, to no avail.
Now I have been turned to a collection agency. To add more, Ryan ** is author of books detailing how to commit fraud, rip people off and get something for nothing all on Craigslist. These are all internet pirates. Because of the amount involved and the fact that this all occurred between 3 states, I cannot enlist a lawyer for help. I have complained to the FCC, BBB and several others had received no response. The collection agency, Constar, is now sending me notices for far more than the amount I was given by Santander. I happen to know how Santander buys contracts, they make the dealer discount it 20 to 30%, plus charge usually the state max APR, ex. $12000 price, dealer gets check for 9000 dollars, so Santander gets $3000 off the top not counting the interest rate, which $12000 at 60 month at 21% APR (state max in Oklahoma). The interest is $7637. So for a check for $9000, they stand to collect $19637. Its total absurdity and violates not only consumer rights but car dealer rights as well. All the people are under credit duress and barely making ends meet, usually on the poorer pay scale and disadvantaged. This is as bad or worse that the housing mortgage problem and needs to be addressed. They are using unfair practices against the consumer and a class action suit needs to be filed and it will be filed eventually.

Today I woke up and my Vehicle was gone, I called the police department who stated to contact Santander Consumer. Since May, my wife and I have been trying to get a "Trip" payment on our account so that we can lower our payments for 6 months. We sent in multiple forms that were printed on a laser printer (don't smear) and signed it and paid for faxing it to them. They kept stating that the paper was blurry, the ink was smeared, that the signatures weren't legible. So again we sent the paper again. After a few weeks of doing this, they finally stopped sending the forms (which they stated had to be sent every time for accurate dates).
It is now August, we still haven't received any bills, any information, or any forms. We called them and a man whose last name is ** said that we could do a deferment on the account and it will cut back the last 2 months payments and then we can finalize in the trip. NOT telling us that we had a choice of one or the other. During this whole process, multiple associates from Santander Consumer told us and I quote "If you are in the process of obtaining a "Trip" on your account, then you cannot make a payment because it will counteract with the process of this payment option". I stated, "So, you are saying that I am to not make a payment?" "Yes. If you make a payment, you will not be able to start the "Trip" payment until you stop paying your current payment amount." So, I didn't make any payments to them while this process is going on. Come to find out, it was approved back in July, and never heard word of it.
In August when we spoke to Mr. **, he stated not to make a payment either. Another time when we contacted them, the 1-888-222-4227 phone number, and went to finally put in a complaint for the experience we’ve been having with the Office of The President, the woman on the line stated, "DO NOT MAKE A PAYMENT UNTIL AFTER YOU HAVE NEGOTIATED WITH THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT "since this is a fault of our company"." So again, we did not make a payment. Today when we called Santander Consumer on the relation of taking our vehicle, I spoke with a very nice gentleman who read over my whole file and explained to me about the process of the repo, but did not state the process of getting my car back. At fault of their own for the miscommunication, and lack of files being sent to us, he directed me to his so called "manager", who had a hostile voice, insisted on her way of things rather than listening to my complaints and concerns of my vehicle being stolen, and we recently moved, and were actually staying the night at a friend’s house, they repoed our car from her house. I feel as if we had been stocked and there is absolutely nothing we can say or do about it.
The lady on the phone stated to me that she cannot discuss on they found the vehicle. When I was explaining to her the situations that we have encounter on their end in a call and collective voice, she said "STOP. STOP. JUST SHUT UP AND LISTEN." So, of course, since I am the adult here, I guess, I let her explain. Then I asked for the Office of the President's direct contact number, she stated the 1-888-222-4227 phone number, even though I had a number that one of her associates gave me, and asked for another complaint. The gentleman that I spoke with stated that even if I pay off my bill within 7-10 days before it goes to auction, that I still have to go and bid on my own car, the car that they stole from me, despite the fact that they told me not to make a payment, and of course, those words weren't even documented in my file, nor was the first complaint to the Office of the President. I have had a lot taken from me in the last year, and to wake up with my car being stolen, and a company that refuses to help me, is the biggest load that has ever happened.

I was told yes, it would be on time if I set it up that day. I followed the instructions given and set up another auto pay for the remaining months of the loan.
My payment came out on time as it always had. Three days later another payment was attempted from my account. "Luckily" for me I had sent out everything and I no longer had the full amount available. I now had an NSF fee that my bank was willing to correct due to Santander's double debit. I contacted Santander and was told that "It's an automated system. I'm sorry there is nothing I can do. This is unacceptable as a business practice and I will not shuffle my money between accounts and collect NSF fees and marks on my account because of incorrect information and an unwillingness to contact a system administrator and correct the problem. I don't even know where to begin. They have just been horrible from the minute my account was sold to them. It was like CitiFinancial sold my soul to the devil. I have a 2004 Honda Accord. I got the car in 2006. Along the way we had some financial bumps in the road and had to do deferments. You are allowed a maximum of 8 deferments. Please keep this in mind because what they DO NOT TELL you is and what is very deceiving is if you do a deferment the total number of months is what is allowed not the amount of deferments. Which means, if you did a deferment in December 2011 for 2 months, that is not 1 deferment. That counts as 2. If you did a deferment in March 2012 for 3 months that is not a second deferment. That is now actually 5. They don't tell you that.
I asked for a deferment recently and they said I was not eligible. I asked why and they explained how the system works. I said that was never explained to me. To which I was advised it was not their problem and I should know better. Recently we hit a real big financial hump and their lack of communication caused me to lose a day of work and have to travel all over the state to locate my car to which no one would help me because when the paperwork was faxed over my husband and mine name are on the same line but my name kept getting cut off so it only showed his name and no one would talk to me because my name wasn't on any paperwork.
Santander took the car and told us it would be in one location. When I called that location they said they didn't have the car and it was somewhere else. When I was finally able to track down my car after numerous phone calls and faxes of paperwork with my name on it we were told we could go pick up the car at a location 30 minutes from my house. I call that location to which they said nope your car was taken this morning for auction to a place that is now an hour and a half from my house. I called up that place and it was a vicious cycle of the blame game. All my ducks were in a row but their lack of communication and the fact the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing caused me extreme grief, anxiety and stress.
When I was finally able to get my car I get a huge bill from Santander. They demanded full payment of what was left on the loan. A few days later I received another bill that was my regular monthly payment plus fees. I called them up to make payment arrangements to which Natasha wouldn't talk to me unless I was telling her I was paying it in full. I told her about the bill and she accused me of lying. She said they had no record of such a bill being sent to me. I offered to send it to her. She refused to accept it. I told her we'll set up a payment for November 8 for X amount of dollars. She said "well that's not the full amount." I said "I know. I am paying what the recent bill is asking for." She refused to accept that. I told her "that's the bill, that's what I am paying." She said "well you owe us the full amount." I said "no I don't. I never owed you the full amount. Even after you took my car the full amount was never owed." To which she said "well we want the full amount now." I said "you can't just change the rules like that." She insisted they could. I told her set up my payment, I will not discuss this further.
Supposedly they were setting it up and an email confirmation was to be sent. Never got the email. Nov 12 and the payment was not taken. I called to find out Natasha NEVER set up my attempt to make a payment. So now I am paying more because they don't do their job. If they don't get what they want when they want it they will screw you over and they know it. There is no communication. It's their way or lose your car. No IFs, ANDs or BUTs about it. I can't wait for the day that I don't have to deal with them ever again. I beg of you all don't do business with them. Run. Run far away. And if there is a civil lawyer out there I beg please look into them because what they are doing to people can not be legal. They must be stopped before more innocent people become victims.

In May after struggling to make car payments I was able to make the payoff for my car. I called Santander and they told me my payoff was $1500 and the payment was made on the phone with a representative. A few weeks later I received a letter saying PAID IN FULL and the LIEN was removed and then received the title. However I kept getting phone calls from them and a bill. I ignored it because after all I have the title so I figured they had an internal error and would catch their mistake sooner or later. Yesterday I received another bill for $864. So I finally called them and the first rep I spoke with did nothing but tell me what her computer was telling her. After thirty minutes she told me that I had filed for bankruptcy and a payment had been reversed and that's why I owe them money. I never filed for bankruptcy so after going back and forth with the rep she gave me a supervisor who, again, told me only what she was reading and didn't look into it at all. Admittedly I went off on her and hung up.
I called back a few minutes later and got a rep that was far more understanding. Then she told me that I filed bankruptcy and it just went through and that's why I owe. I tried not to go off on her and explained my frustration about being told I filed for bankruptcy a third time when I hadn't. She looked into it and came back with: in 2011 a random customer made a payment and the rep that took said payment had mistakenly split the random customers payment evenly with the random customer and me. That person then filed for bankruptcy and it finally ended and now I owe the payment that I never knew I had.
On top of all that they say I owe $700. The bill says I owe $864. So by my count they made three mistakes. The split payment they applied with a random person and me, putting in my notes that I filed bankruptcy and the amount they think I owe. The second phone call ended with her telling me the title I have isn't valid. They still have a lien and an accountant from Santander will call me to audit my payment history and tell me why legally I owe them money. Any thoughts?

Yes, my payments are a little high but after driving my previous car, which was a 2001 car and falling apart, I was grateful for Santander that they let me have this car with zero down.
I think people write bad reviews not because of Santander but because people miss payments, and yes I agree it will happen, but just call them back and explain your issue. If you don't want them calling you 24/7, then call them back. It's almost like common sense flies out the window. It's not Santander’s fault you’re late or that your payment is high. Remember, you agreed to the terms, you signed it. So take some responsibility for your own bills and stop whining.

I purchased my car in 2005 in 2009. I am still paying for this car. I can't seem to get this car loan down. I finally got so far behind, my car was repoed 10/21. I was able to get the money to pay the past 3 months of car payments but not the 400$ repo fee. What the heck makes them think I can pay an EXTRA 400$ when I can't even pay my regular monthly payment? Anyway, I asked how many payments I had left. The gentleman told me I have eleven payments left. So my boyfriend offered to pay my car off for me. So we did the math and it would cost 4700$ to pay my car off.
We say we want to pay the car off and the guy comes back and says I owe $11,730.56!!!! Where the heck did he get that number from? So he said I had two deferments plus the interest. I am so beyond floored right now. How can I have $7,000.00 worth of deferred payments plus interest? I want to get out of this loan so bad but don't know if I can. So I am in the process of shopping around to get out from under Santander. I will never recommend this company to anyone. They are highway robbers and taking advantage of people!

So instead of making the 267.00 payments I started paying 400.00 a month for 6 months. Woke up one morning and my car was gone and they told me I was four months behind and I need to pay the told payment of 4000.00. So I told them about the agreement that we had made. They then told me "well, you still have to pay 1392.00" when the day before I paid 400.00. So in all they got a total of 1792.00 for four payments that they said that I was behind and never was behind. I also have to pay storage fees. They also going to charge my account for repo. I got a history payout as my loan is to mature Dec. 2013. I thought it very odd after 72 months of payments I still owe over $5,000. They lowered my payments, kept interest the same, would not change due date. That alone puts me at more fees since I only get paid one time per month. After figures these guys will get over 32,000 in profit. Looking over several comments I am not a loan ranger here. It seems Santander has a practice of ripping off. No wonder number one in car loans. They prey on the vulnerable. God help them but for now help us the consumer. Someone must be able to help these wolves. That is what they are. I understand profit keeps things going but stealing people's hard earned money is wicked and evil.
Who can help us consumers? What is arbitration? I will go for it if I knew what it was exactly. Seems like they have all the money so their lawyers could eat the consumer alive. They lie to the consumer and try to twist the truth. Over 20,000 consumers have commented. Who can help us? Someone please tell us consumer what can we do. Give us a start here. I pray consumers get paid back for their hardship this company has imposed. God help us. Come now and help. I am trusting God but he does work through people.
Is there a lawyer who can help us come together and do something? Not a class action. Class action no one gets repaid and it takes years. Santander needs to pay back what they have stole to each consumer. In my case they will make over 24,000 in interest above the 5000 from original loan. Thank you, I hope someone with heart helps.

My grandma had her vehicle financed with them and she was ready to give her vehicle back because the amount she owed went up and I am having the same problem. I'm just hoping I'm wrong and this how finance works. I asked why my normal payment of 267 went up to 273 in January (I am currently three months ahead) and I've been paying 300 every month for over a year and even one payment of 400. Yet my payments still went up and I was told by customer service "Don't worry about it, that happens with financing. Just keep making payments and you'll be done in no time."
I just realized after doing some internet research on interest and financing that my interest at 24% annually over 5 years would equate to me paying $9,000 in interest and $9,000 in principal on a vehicle I paid $1500 down and cost only 11,000 total. I'm just hoping I'm not being ripped off because I don't have knowledge of finance. Overall, I like my car and needed it at the time. It's just that in the future if I'm in the market for a new car I'd rather walk than spend a fortune with Santander.

When I called, I explained to them that my loan matures in March but after March, I will still owe 3,222.95 left. The lady seemed like she had no clue how to respond. Without listening to my concern, she then decides to just email me my payment history. My loan was originally with CitiFinancial and was bought by Santander. As she is speaking to me, I was telling her that I am reviewing the statement she sent but all she kept saying was "Review your statement and call us back". I said, "Ma'am, I AM reviewing my statement and I don't understand it so why am I calling back?" She said again, "Review your statement and call us back."
I immediately told her I wanted to speak to a manager because I got the impression that she was just trying to get me off the phone. When the manager got on the phone, it just got worse. She would not allow me to talk and acted as if was on mute and did not stop talking when I was trying to ask questions. Her conversation was all financial jargon and seemed like a scheme to make me say, "UGHHH ok, I understand." She said, "Pull your bank statements and if you have information to prove these late payments were not legitimate, we will adjust your account." So, I decided to do as she said and unfortunately, my bank only goes as far as 36 months and I needed to go back 5 years. I had to pay 30 dollars to get my statements beyond 36 months to 5 years.
After reviewing line by line, I provided all the proof I had that proves everything they said was false. I provided them a letter, bank statements highlighting all payments and the statement they sent me to a fax number provided by the company during the phone conversation. A week went by and not an email or any response confirming they received my fax or anything. Today, I put all my paperwork in an envelope sending it certified mail with signed receipt mailed back to me. It has been the most miserable experience dealing with these people. If you mail your payment expect 7 business days for your payment to post. If you actually think you have a grace period on your loan, you do not. You may not get hit with a late fee if your payment is received within the 10 day "Grace" period but here is where the additional interest piles in. If your payment is made on different days of the month each month you could in fact never pay your loan off. The manner in which they calculate interest on loans is the worst possible way for a consumer to make payments. The only sure way to get out of their trap is to have an auto debit each month from checking on actual due date.

They had on both occasions told me that if I would send a certified check, that the lien release could be sent as soon as the money had cleared and all was showing paid. They said that a personal check would require a two-week delay for the lien release but a certified check would expedite the process. I conveyed this to the buyer and assured him that I could get him a clean title within the 30 days required by Kansas law based on this information.
I followed the instructions that Santander had given me. The money cleared on August 29. On Sept. 4, I called Santander Title Dept and they said that they would send an electronic lien release but they did nothing. On Sept. 9, I called again and they said that they would send an electronic lien release but Kansas says that they did not. I just spoke with them, Sept. 12, and they say that they are sending me a paper title. I hope this is true (Kansas uses electronic titles for vehicles with liens so it sounds suspicious) but the problem is that the continued lies about sending the lien release has made me look very bad to the buyer who is now thinking that there is something wrong. At this point, it appears that it does not matter what form of payment is used or how the lien is cleared because they will still not send the title sooner than two weeks after the money has cleared. Telling me this up front would have been much better because I could have told this to the buyer.

I was told by one of their representatives to put stop payment on my check and wire them the payment. This company has to be the worst company in the US. Here is my story, short and sweet. I had a loan that was not originally through Santander but my loan was purchased by them. I could tell the difference immediately - piss poor customer service, harassing calls asking for payments that had already been made on time I might add, and late fees because they neglected to post the payment to the correct account. So I traded the car in for my new car, the payoff amount was agreed upon with the car dealership and guess what, 1 month later I was contacted by Santander stating that the agent didn't have permission to accept a payoff in that amount and that they needed me to make a payment or they would repossess the car although a payment hadn't officially been missed.
I was shocked to learn 6 months later when I was attempting to purchase another home that my trade in had been reported to the credit bureau as a repossession. Might I add I had no further communication with Santander after I told them they needed to contact the car dealership. I have been trying to fight this for 2 years now and all I get is the runaround from them. I have contacted them and the credit bureau disputing this to no avail yet. SANTANDER MUST BE STOPPED.

Made 72 monthly payments of $ 385.07 per month on a 6-year car loan. Got the loan August 2007 with CitiFinancial Auto. I had one month extension February 22, 2010 while with CitiFinancial Auto. On 9/6/2010, my car loan was sold to Santander. In 2011, I had a Chapter 7 bankruptcy but I kept the car and made every payment on time. After the bankruptcy, Santander blocked my internet auto loan account so I could not make anymore payments online but had to mail them a check every month via USPS. When I called and asked why, they said that this was normal procedure. So no more monthly statements for me.
Anyway, I kept my side of the contract and I made my car payment on time every month. Loan maturity was August 19, 2013. Made my last payment August 19, 2013, or so I thought. I called August 28, 2013 to ask them when I will get my title and spoke to Brenda to find out that I still owe them $1,406.06. I asked to speak with a manager to explain to me why I still owe money. Brenda said her manager is not in the office and she wanted me to leave a voice mail. I said no. Then somebody else named Laura, I think, came on line and told me something about 2 different payments, interest payments on them, bank fees, balloon loan...blah, blah, blah....all the mumbo-jumbo....nothing to the point.
I don't remember having 2 extension payments. I explained that I only show one month extension. I also told her that when I got the extension, the person I was talking to said that it was no fee for it because you can do it once a year and it will be added to the end of the loan. This did not help, and according to her, I still have to make 4 more payments of $385.07 until December 2013 so I can pay my car off. I asked them to send me the documentation or a statement for me to see what's going on. So I am waiting.
From what I see here on this website, Santander will add on extra fees and extra imaginary charges and raise the interest rates to folks that fulfilled their obligations and paid their car loans off on time and in the same time not releasing the titles to make folks pay the extras and in case they don't, they will repossess the car even if it was paid off, and then go ahead and sell it for cash to probably their own connected people. This is the rip off of the century. You pay them $36,000.00 for a $15,000.00 car for 6 or 7 years and then they turn around and inflate the fees and the interest loan at the loan maturity and if you don't pay them, they've got you by the you-know-what since they have the car title, and then they turn around and take your car away even after it's paid off and sell it to their business friends for almost nothing so they can make a profit, too.
Somebody must stop this bank from doing business in the US. I think that this is an EU (European Community) bank out of Spain and a big one over there. If I don't get any results with Santander, my next step will be to contact my State Attorney General for bank fraud, and also my Congressman in Washington and see what they can do. Folks, please don't get compliant and asap get on the phone, on the e-mail, mail or whatever you got available and contact your State Attorney General and your Representative in Washington to stop this crooked bank from doing business here in this country.

We fell upon hard times, eventually, our vehicle was repossessed by an agent of Santander. A couple of weeks after the repossession of our 2007 Jeep Liberty, we were informed by notice sent in the mail that they disposed of our Jeep for less than $300.00. We were shocked, and our bankruptcy attorney was shocked too.
This vehicle had two or three recall notices on it, one were the rear control arms, and the other was the gas tank that could erupt in flames if the vehicle was rear ended - Chrysler Corp. installs a frame mounted trailer hitch to beef up the rear area where an impact might take place. These recall repairs would be paid for by Chrysler Corp. and not the vehicle owner.
Our Jeep had approximately 50,000 miles on it and it was in good condition. The interior needed detailing and it could have used a new set of tires. We considered it a good dependable vehicle. My spouse drove it to and from work everyday. See my uploaded photos depicting the vehicle condition. This vehicle had no other mechanical or cosmetic defects.
My advise to anyone seeking an auto loan, if you have less than perfect credit, consider purchasing a vehicle from an individual and avoid going into a installment loan contract with any company or corporation with an astronomical interest rate. Our rate was 18.5% and when we defaulted on the loan, it jumped to 25% plus late fees. After our jeep was disposed of, Santander claimed we owed them nearly $13,000 more.

We bought a 2003 Ford Expedition in 2007. The loan was originally serviced by CitiFinancial Auto. In 2009 like many others, I received notice my loan was now being serviced by Santander. During the course of our loan yes I was late several times due to financial difficulties and did get a 2 month deferment. The original maturity date of our loan was July 2013. With the 2 month deferment, our new maturity date is September 2013. We are now looking at our loan and we still owe over $8000 by September 28, 2013. I asked for a complete amortization of the loan and after going through it, I added up all interest paid to date. Comparing that with the expected total interest to be paid on the loan as stated on the original contract, I have discovered we have overpaid the interest by the exact amount left to be paid on the loan. This is a clear indication that my payments are not being applied correctly. Something needs to be done about this company.

Santander would call me all hours of the day and night until I complained to the Federal Trade Commission. They then started a better procedure. I bought my car in 2007 and in 2013 I still owed $8,700. I only paid around $13,000 to begin with... so according to them, I paid hardly anything for 6 years. I paid extra and the payments never went toward the interest. When I called, they stated that I had to get it in writing if I wanted it to go toward the interest. Then I was paying them $400.00 and then $200.00 same month to try to catch up. They repoed my car when I reversed it and paid $200.00 first (2nd repo).
I finally just let them take it. They sold my car for $2,000 Kelly Blue Book stated I should have received at least $3,400 in fair condition and $3,900 in good condition. My car needed inspected but was a good solid car and it was scheduled for inspection on Tuesday. They took it on Sunday prior. I requested statements received none. I had no way to know what I was paying and where the money was going. I would not recommend them to anyone.

My car was repossessed by Santander Friday August 9, 2013. I have been paying on my vehicle since October 2008. I was financed also with CitiFinancial until 2009 when I received a letter to start paying Santander. I am a single hard working woman, with whom got behind a month on my payments. I went to get in my car Friday morning to go to work and no car. I knew it had been repossessed because of the way the marks on the parking space was scratched. I called Santander and was told that I needed to pay up for July and the late fees. I admit I had some restructured payments in 2010 due to illness, but I caught up on my payments. Till now I was doing well with the $304.00 a month payments. The vehicle was $8,000 to start then added the interest, taxes added came to $13,000 and some change, why is it that I still have a balance of over $10,200.00 and now repossession fees of $1200.00 added?
Five years and I have only paid about $3,000.00 so far. I called Santander and I have only talked to about 15 people all different if you get the same person they tell you something all together different from what they have told you the first time. They tell me they can't send me copies of my statement of payments or anything because it takes some time to upload in the system. One would think that information should already be in the system considering you have an account with them. I am so tired of talking my heart hurts, I don't want to talk anymore because I am getting no where. I need a letter from them to get a loan to retrieve my vehicle and I can't get it, and they are not cooperative at all. So I don't know what to do about my vehicle because they only give me ten days before they start added on storage fees. Getting a loan now I have a 48 hour turn around to process the loan, they need a letter from Santander in which I can not get.
Santander says they can not send me anything stating how much I need to pay, nor a break down of what I owe. They just tell me on the phone about the $1200.00 to send to them so they can release my vehicle. Then you get to the lot that has it and pay their fees of over $200. and now more because it is going to be over the ten days, because I don't have that kind of money. I live pay check to pay check as a lot of us do. Screwed by Santander. I am in the process of losing my job because I have no transportation to work. I have since Friday called in sick to try and hang on, but that's going to run out soon. One month behind and Santander will pull your vehicle, so Consumers beware.

Santander purchased the loan from CitiFinancial. After trying to understand why my car loan is so inaccurate after that transaction and getting nowhere with the customer services from Santander to help me understand the differences, my car was repossessed by Santander. In less than 24 hours after the repossession, the car was moved to a different city despite the fact that I made a pay off payment and they said the car was in a secure local location. All the personal items inside the car including my tag license plate are somewhere else I don't know. They damaged the car door, which I have to fix to my expense. This whole experience has been very difficult, starting from how to pay off the car as they only accept wire transfer from two entities not your bank, to the amount of extra fees they add for everything including transport back to the original city. Not to mention I still don't know why I owe all the money they said I owe. When I contact them about the damages and the lost personal items, they just bounce the ball to different companies involved in the repo.

Okay, I know that some people are going to look at the 4-star rating and wonder why I did that. So I thought I was making regular payments via my bank account (auto draft out). Turns out my bank stopped doing business with Santander and my car was repo'ed. This was Friday, the 9th of August 2013. I call them Saturday morning when I found my car gone and they told me what happened. Called my bank and that is when I found out why it was repo'ed. So I contacted Santander back and the lady on the phone was very nice. I had almost $1,000 owed on the car and they pushed back half of that (I pay $350 a month) and took care of the towing fees after I explained what happened and my bank talked to them. So all in all, very nice experience. I didn't give it a 5 star because I wasn't called by Santander, but I should have been on top of it anyway.

Several large dollar amounts added to my account and no explanation able to be given. After complaining, locked out of ability to see my account online anymore. I purchased a car around April 2007 on a 72-month contract to which financing was made available through CitiFinancial. Santander purchased my contract from Citi when they closed and I have been making payments to them since. I am currently 74 months later than the purchase date and have a balance of $6900 for some reason so I began to investigate. I discovered that there were several large amounts of money added to my principal (the most recent $5950 in November 2008) and phoned Santander after getting no resolve by emailing, concerning this addition as well as several others prior to this particular one.
I was told the accounting dept would review my account and I asked if I would be notified of their finding? I was then asked to call back 5 days later to find out what they found. Okay, days prior to phoning, I tried re-entering my online access and had been locked out of being able to access my account. I called and was sent temporary passwords twice only to find I was still locked out??? Now I am being told to wait 24 hours and try again.
After reading several online complaints regarding this company I found others were treated the same way and were locked out upon complaining about the charges on their account. During one of my calls, I asked to have a copy of my original contract sent to me and they've agreed to via mail also my payment history via email. They sent the latter and interestingly, it only goes back to March of 2009, clearly hiding the disputed date of November 2008. I have never had to deal with such malpractice as this and think I have been scammed out of thousands of dollars by these people and like they pointed out to me, have been charged interest on larger principal amounts based on false additions to my balance, by them.
No person via telephone will answer why they added dollar amounts on my account, instead skirt around the issue while on the phone saying my current balance owed is accurate. Keep in mind my credit wasn't the best when I took out this loan from Citi and had to accept an interest rate of 14% but the original loan was for $15500.00 or so and 74 payments of $330 (on average). My balance is still $6800.00??? They have reported me as 30 days late 5 times on my credit file yet somehow have me owing way more than I should have been charged. I don't know if I can afford an attorney to file a suit against them but then feel I can't afford not to.

I am 72 years going on 73 this year and when I arrived to the Dealer I was shown a few cars. Seeing that the car was not for me but my daughter and son in law, my son in law came with me to see the cars. Well we were only shown 3 cars and so we basically had to pick one of the three. So we decided on the Murano. Well Roadside Loans accepted our application at a very high interest of 11.89 APR. We signed the contract and went home that day. Well my daughter saw the car and said that the car was too small for the 2 young children and her and my son in law.
Well a few days later My son in law on my behalf started to ask the dealer if they would rescind the deal and at first they balked. I then called the Santander and spoke to person and they said that I would have to talk to the dealer because they were the only ones that could void deals. So a few dealers my son in law contacted the General Manager of the Dealer ship and with some resistance the GM said he would look into it and see if it was still possible. I then decided to contact Santander and they changed their tune stating that the only way out was to pay off the entire 28,000 amount. There was no other alternative but to pay out. Now my issue is first of all I'm 72 and now stuck with a 72 month loan at 11.89 APR and there is no chance at refinancing the loan and the only way to get out is by buying the car out at 28,000! Santander has some very rigged policies and when the dealer is willing to void the deal the lender is not so willing! This is bad business for Santander and I just want them to rescind the car loan!

I surrendered the car in a bankruptcy mostly to get out from under Santander due to all the criminal acts that they continue to perform over and over in violating fair debt laws on the local and federal level. They did not respond to the federal court's informing them that I surrendered the car. They did not return my calls to ask them to come and pick it up. Finally, after 4 months I get a call from a private number with a woman saying they are a "repo company". I say, fine, the car is ready for you to pick up. I have the keys here for you. They say they will call me when they arrive so I can come out of a locked stairwell apartment and give them the keys and get my license plate. No one shows.
After a week I go out the door and the car is gone. Ok. Fine. It's over, right? NO. Santander now expects me to pay the repossession fees even though I surrendered the car. I immediately informed my attorney and we will fight them in federal court if they try to sue me for the monies entailed in the repossession. I know there are class actions lawsuits brewing, but have you found one on the internet that has actually happened? I want to know how Santander can get away with all they do to hurt consumers?
My story is mild compared to many. I was lucky enough to escape much of other's heartbreak in dealing with this company by having to do bankruptcy due to long term job losses. I tell everyone NEVER finance a vehicle with Santander. Never. You will never pay it, never get the title if you do, and it could be repossessed at any moment even if you are not behind on your payments. This company is doing criminal acts all over the globe and getting away with it. WHY?

I obtained a car from Chrysler, then car loan from AmeriCredit, thinking I could get a better payment deal, went with CitiFinancial. While I was with CitiFinancial, I had no problems (They were a great company). Of course the bad news was when they sold out to Santander, who is the worst group of people in the world. Articles state that if you pay on time your car would not be repossessed. This is not true, as I am the person who pays this bill $267 ($270 I pay) on a monthly basis for over two years. I was out of work in 2010, and if you were going to repossess a car that was the time to do it. Not after a person is paid up and actually paid $300 extra (not applied to the fees they charged, but just stated on the bill as a $300 paid). They hold your car hostage when you do not do what they want you to do (threaten more and more money). So everyone who writes in and thinks they know what they are talking about do not know a thing. You do not wait after $13,000 payments for a $9,000 car to report non and late payments to the credit reports info.
So now, even though I have made regular payments to Santander for 2 years, they are still demanding that $1500 be paid for added fees (They started out with $150 - which I paid with the extra payments 2010), they continually added about $200-$350 monthly until it came to that amount. They lied about letting you take off two months and placing it on the end, and changing it to no they only apply to fees, which they never applied it to. They are always being sued for this very reason. Green and Davis now are in a arbitration suit with them now.

You would be amazed what they can do to help you without getting a supervisor if you’re just polite. Yes the interest is extremely high. But pay it and pay on time. Rebuild your credit and then refinance with a local credit union. I finance with Santander because no one else would even look at me. They gave me a rate of 19%. I paid it, built my credit, and refinanced with a local credit union a year later at 3.4%. Don’t listen to everyone else complaining about Santander. It has been a week and nothing has been done to resolve this or fix my account whatsoever. I have been asked 3 different times to show proof of my check payment, which I provided 3 times. The back of my check clearly shows their endorsement!! When asked if they were going to follow up with me when this was fixed, they informed me that it was MY responsibility to follow up to see if it was resolved, that there would be no calls from them. Not only that, but they also told me the negative effect to my credit would ALSO BE MY responsibility to file a claim to have fixed.
This company is ridiculous. They are either applying my check to someone else's account or someone is embezzling monies from their office. Then in 2011, I started receiving calls from Santander Consumer, stating they wanted the balance paid in full. Since the very beginning, Santander Consumer has been misinforming and deceiving my sister and I regarding our loan, resulting in thousands of dollars applied to interest rather than principal. Many of these payments were representative advised, and we were directly told would be in the best interest of the loan. A direct result of Santander Consumers' inability to communicate their practices to their consumers accurately, we have suffered financially, mentally and have been forced to waste a monumental amount of time. Whether it was intentional deception or incompetence, Santander Consumers' completely unethical business practices have made it impossible for two hard working Americans to conceivably pay off this loan.
When requesting mailed documentation regarding the loan, fees, applied payments and interest, we are given the runaround, ignored or our calls are simply terminated, which is funny because try being one day late and see how many harassing phone calls you receive from them. This has made it very difficult to seek legal advice. Hundreds of phone calls (all documented) have transpired with representatives constantly misinforming us. We want nothing more than a fair obtainable loan, for our past representative advised payments to be applied to our principal balance. We plan on continuing to follow up with whatever parties are necessary until this issue is resolved.

From day one, Santander has committed outright fraud. Within a month of the purchase, someone had taken out a bunch of payday loans via the internet using my name and address with my son's bank account information. My son didn't discover this until he was questioning why his bank account was so depleted. I've been regularly receiving calls from them, I presume to try and get money from me. It was so bad that I ended up blocking the numbers they used to call me. As it is, I don't answer calls from callers I don't know, but the calls were frequent and annoying.
This week, I received a Bill Pay statement from Western Union addressed to me, with my son’s bank account information on it. Again. When I called my son about it, he told me that he had closed that account because he wasn't getting anywhere with all the payday loan companies. Seems to me like someone at Santander screwed up royally on this one. And then today, at 11 am Central time, Santander called me at work. I just happened to pick up the phone because everyone else was on the phone at the time. They asked for me or my son. I identified myself and the person on the other end tried to tell me that they hadn't received a payment since March 2013, that the account was something like 56 days delinquent, and wanted me to pay them 900+ dollars.
I was polite but told them there was no way I was paying them anything today or any other day. "Well, could you make on car payment today?" “Nope, sorry.” “How about $250?” “Sorry. Can't do it. I will call my son and let him know that he needs to contact you.” Click. Now, remember the thing about the Western Union Bill Pay? Guess what the amount was they tried to siphon out of his account? $250. Can you spell S-C-A-M, R-I-P-O-F-F, F-R-A-U-D? Now, I have no way of knowing if my son is delinquent or not. I asked and he says not. And given the whole issue with the payday loan thing, I'm inclined to believe him. I just hope he's got some documentation to come at them with. Although based on what I've read here, it won't do him any good.
I'm not worried about my credit. I don't have any to ruin. Out of work for 15 months, bankrupt, now working for a fourth of my original salary. My son is in the same boat. So it really surprises me that this loan went through in the first place. But again, based on what I read here, maybe not. Bottom line, if you're thinking of buying a car and using Santander to finance it, I'd think again. I'd even think seriously of going without instead of doing business with Santander. To those who've had a good experience with them, I'm happy for you. But you are the lucky few.

I got a loan from Santander USA back in November 2012. This was the only bank who was willing to approve me b/c I have a work permit that expires every year and no one else wanted to take their chances and Santander USA did. This is my first car loan on my credit and I got 13.8% APR, not too good and not too bad either. The only thing I don't like about Santander USA is that they use a third party for online payments like Western Union, MoneyGram, etc. and their fees are almost $11.00 per payment. The good thing is that they post the payment on my account the very next day and send emails saying they received payment and they have posted the payment too. Yes, I could set up my account on auto pay but I really don't like that. I'd rather send the payment early than have to wait till the due date. Now I am planning on sending additional principal payments by mail. We will see what happens. I'm only giving them 4 stars b/c of the online payment system they have. Otherwise, it will be 5 stars from me.

They wrote us a letter and wanted $1700. The car payment is $465 a month. We called the CEO/President of the company and he made special arrangements with us. The billing office is still sending letters to us after they were called not to send any letters and that we had talked to Mr. Thomas Dundon. I guess the billing and call center are not listening to us or the CEO. They always get their money. Some of the people at the call center are rude.

I can’t sell the van because I don't have the title and when I went to the DMV, they said their system still shows CitiFinancial as still having the loan. I need the title but have no way of getting it. They said they sent it out on July 16,2012. So why haven't I gotten it? I got a letter of congratulations for paying the van off, but nothing else. First of all, when you call your "lender" and they have to say "we are a debt collector," that should be your first tip that this company is not on the side of their customer. The second tip is when you you've paid off a car and they owe you money yet they've set their system to cut you off so you can never reach a representative (I was able to, a different phone and their system didn't recognize, finally get through)... Anyway, I have used Santander on two different occasions. The first one I paid off in about 16 months. The problem with this loan was that I traded the vehicle off and the dealer got the payoff check there a day late. Santander put the 30-day late payment on my credit. They will not remove!!
The second car experience is much worse. I paid off another car in April of this year. I had come into some money and was tired of paying the interest on the account. I received the payoff notice, only to then receive a notice that one of the payments did not credit properly. For that reason, they reversed the payment. I have now provided 6 copies of bank statements to this company and never received one reply from their ASU department. Each time I've had to call them to find out their results of the investigation.
I've finally ordered a full payment history on the car and hope to prove my case this time. But at the current time, I have overpaid the car and they are holding my payment saying I didn't. Please do not do business with this company.

I bought my car back in 2008 for $14,500, financed with everything out the door right at $18,000. At that time, my car was financed under Citibank @ 11% interest. My payments are $391 a month, and yes, I have missed some payments here and there, but nothing major. Here I am, five years and one company buy-out later, and I still owe $12,000??? What the heck have I been paying for??? I thought I would be close to paying this car off, but I have barely made any progress.
When I called and asked them about it, they told me I'm behind two months and threatened to repossess my car (which they have, recently, stating that my account was 90 days past due). I just made a payment two-and-a-half weeks ago. How is it past due? When I called to see how much I had to pay to get my car back, the first guy was very rude and told me $2,000! I couldn't believe it! He said I owed all the way back to six months ago in January. I don't know of a single company that would let someone be that delinquent and not come retrieve their product until six months later. Makes no sense to me. I then hung up and called back and talked to someone else, who was much nicer and quoted me $950 less than the first guy! He actually said to me that the previous customer service rep was trying to scam me and get a bunch of money I didn't owe.
I wish I would have been smart and kept better records of all of my dealings with this terrible company. I am now fighting to get my car back, and will then try to refinance elsewhere. Started out with another auto-loan company. Everything was just fine. Then they sold my loan to Santander Auto, who are nothing short of thieves and crooks. Most people pay online these days and companies push it. I regret being late sometimes, but never past 30 days, so they could not put that on my credit report. At first, I kept paying the late fees like I thought I was to do, but late fees were not being credited as late fees off my account, so I called them a few times. They said it would be corrected, but again it never was. Said I had to mail late fees separately and I could not pay them online.
Today I finally paid my account off in full, and guess what, they accepted late fees online, about an extra $600.00 just in late fees alone!!! A few months ago, I called them, offered to pay account off if they would waive all or some late fees, but they said no, so I took my time. I paid them off today just to get them out of my life!!!

I received my first car loan in July 2007. I purchased a 2004 Toyota Camry. My finance company was Citi Financial Auto that was later turned over to Santander Consumer. I made my final payment of my auto loan back in October 2012. It's June 2013 and I haven't received my title of ownership yet. First, I call the DMV to find out what the problem was and they told me there was no record of Santander Consumer sending a lien of transfer to them. Next, I call Santander Consumer and the first problem I had was that their hotline would disconnect many times. After the 5th time dialing and entering the information, I finally get through to a customer service representative.
I tell the CSR my situation and she looks up my records. She tells me, "We sent the lien release on November 7th, 2012." I tell her that I contacted the DMV and they have no record of a lien release from Santander Consumer, and I would like to request a letter of Lien Transfer to take to the DMV to receive my title. She tells me, "Go to this website, it's a third party lien release and I will have to pay a fee." Let me ask you this... If I paid my auto loan in full, shouldn't my title be in my hands right now? Why should I have to pay a fee for a mix-up with Santander Consumer? If the DMV did not receive the electronic lien transfer, then that means that Santander Consumer did not do their job. The funny thing is, if you make a payment over the phone, they are quick to answer but want you to pay a fee as well. Here's the real messed up part about it...
I call back and talked to another CSR, and she told me that the lien release was on November 8th... Now, how did it go from November 7th to November 8th? That means that they never sent it. I wonder if I call back, will they tell me the lien release was sent on November 9th? Santander Consumer finds ways of getting more money from people and I think they are crooked... the third party lien company is probably a subdivision of Santander Consumer. This company is obtuse to customer service and I am very dissatisfied with this company and their operations. If a lawyer would contact me, I am ready for the correspondence!

We purchased our auto on February 17, 2007. Within 24 hours, we had to go back with the vehicle as it broke down going home. We were told we could not return it and that our trade vehicle was sold, which we found out months later it was sold in a crack/cocaine deal. We were initially with CitiFinancial and the original agreement was a very high interest rate, and that they were going to lower that rate in half within one year. Of course, that didn't happen. We were smart enough when we purchased the vehicle to take a policy; whereby if one of us became disabled, that insurance company would make the payments. Within one year of having the car, one did become disabled. However, it took a while for the payments to start.
In 2010 CitiFinancial evidently sold the loan to Santander Consumer and it has been a nightmare. After sending so many letters to them concerning a $350+ fee the other day on their site, one of the reps told us it was a fee that was added from taking over the loan from CitiFinancial. I say **. I called, and they took the information but requested that I make a partial payment and, that way, the payments would be deferred until July. I did that the next day. I was told that I was not eligible for the lower payments for six months but I figured I could get through until July, and then restart the payments.

I purchased my 2005 BMW X5 from Carmax in Houston, TX in November 2010. The finance company was and still is Santander, of course. My first payment wasn't due until January 18, 2011. I began sending payments in December (a month in advance). Beginning in January, I started sending in a little every week, believing that I could eat up some of the interest by doing so. They accepted all the funds I sent in and continued to do so for the next year and a half. Some months I paid more than $900. I was always ahead about 1-2 months.
Around mid-September 2012, I had to skip a month due to finances and I picked up my next payment in November. They had added on $210.64 to my monthly payment for November but when I spoke to both customer service and the Office of the President, they claimed to have reviewed my file; stated that the accounting was correct; and that they don't accept partial payments, even though they took all the payments I sent. So I went ahead and paid the extra monies, still believing that they were wrong and they were stealing.
In December 2012, I went shopping for a new vehicle and found out that I owed approximately $11,000 in negative equity on my vehicle. I figured out a way to pay that amount down and started sending in full payments. In April, I was still a month ahead and my payment wasn't due until May 18, 2013. I sent in a check for $2,330 along with a letter stating that the full amount should be put towards the principal. Accounting disregarded my request and took out $226.57 for interest. About a week later, I sent in a regular full payment and they took more interest out of that.
When I spoke with the Office of the President, they said it would be corrected within 2 business days. A week went by and no corrections were made. I spoke to them again. They claimed they would open a new complaint and not close it until the corrections were made. Yesterday, 5/8/13, I realized the corrections were made, but they pushed my due date back to May when it should be June because of the extra payment I sent in. They are saying that my May payment due is $657.59 - adding an additional $100.12 to my regular monthly payment. I am fed up and have filed complaints with the Attorney General of Texas, Better Business Bureau and Federal Trade Commission. This company should not be allowed to continue business when they are stealing our hard earned dollars.

They do not tell you the truth about payment deferment, extra fees, exact payoff amount on monthly statements, try to avoid telling you the real outcome of those options, will repossess your car with huge fees, damage your car and the electronics system, give you delayed payments options only to cause you to lose the car, pay more high interest, and attached more fees to get more money. I cannot believe the US allows this company to conduct business. They are worse than a predatory lender. Yes, you pay more interest rate due to credit issues and they in turn ruin your credit more with misleading options. At the time, my credit was very poor and I took the 20.99% interest and a $642 a month payment because I was making enough money. Due to the accident, I ended up filing BK and reaffirming the car which I should have let go but kept without trying to negotiate a better interest and payment which, of course, they accepted (lesson learned). My family expanded sometime after that and the Charger was no longer practical. I started looking for an SUV in 2012 and, of course, I was upside down. Being on the back side of the BK, my credit score was rising and I was able to get financing for a new truck which was more suitable but I had to leave the Charger off as a trade-in. I was convinced that I could sell my Beautiful Charger easily on my own which I started in Nov. 2012.
Now, it's March of 2013 and I have no luck. I have asked Santander if they could lower my interest rate and payment to which they said no. I have tried to refinance which hasn't worked either. Last week, I spoke to them again when they were calling for a payment as I approached my first 30-day late in years and told them I was trying to sell the car and borrow money to make the payment. Finally, a rep said that she could try and submit a request to have my payments lowered which would be for a max. of 6 months. She also said that it would take about a week for a response. I took the car to CarMax yesterday and they offered me $13k so as a chance, I called Santander and asked if they would take $18k to get me out of the car that I owe about $22k on because of the interest rate. I was hoping that they would say yes and then I could make up the $5k with a family loan and, of course, Santander said no. However, my on-time payments were being sent to Citi Auto, not Santander. After making 71 out of my 72 payments for $298.43, I am now being told I have a payoff of $3,405.12 and my maturity date is 3/1/2013. I called because I knew there has to be some sort of typo error on my account as well. I was told I had 4 deferred payments since 2008 in which I only recall two and I am being charged all this interest. However, my statement indicates I have no unpaid fees or charges. This doesn't make any sense. The math just does not add up. I was told until I pay off the balance, I will continue to accrue interest. This is the worst company. I honestly don't know what to do. How can they get away with this?

I made payments on my recreational vehicle from early 2004 to early 2007, and I voluntarily repossessed it to the company and eventually it went into charge off on the original company's credit records around 2009. However, this company, Santander Consumer USA, is now in possession of the note and is reporting to the credit bureau inaccurate information, that I made good payments from early 2006 to early 2011 - clearly and outright inaccurate credit reporting as I did not own the vehicle past early 2007.

I have read the comments here, and it looks like Santander swindled us all; and then some. After signing on a 14% interest and working three jobs to get this damn car paid off as soon as possible, since my credit was bad then and I had no choice, I figured I could work extra hours and pay it off as soon as possible since it was an open loan. Two months later, I learned Santander adjusted my interest rate to 26%. There was no reason given. The dealership didn't understand it and no one could give me an explanation. Hello? I signed the paperwork for 14% and it didn't matter to them. My payment went from $236 to $398 overnight as they added extra fees in, but no one could tell me what the extra fees were.
Not being able to afford this obviously, and being pretty pissed at Santander's **, I stopped paying the car. It is now sitting in a compound at a Mexican border point, and it will stay there forever. They can take this car and shove it after all the illegal things they have done. You cannot get an answer from their call service, but they are real quick to threaten and vocally abuse you on the phone when you are late. After three months of not answering their calls, and them realizing the car wasn't even in the country, they stopped. Have a nice life Santander. What goes around, comes around. You will never find your stupid 26% car (after 40 days, it ended up at the wrecker as scrap metal). You should stop swindling, and quite honestly, you can drop dead. But I really feel for the people here who were swindled into their car loan which appeared feasible when signing. This company needs to be shut down, and it needs to be shut down now. Do not finance anything through Santander!

These people will repossess your vehicle at the drop of a hat. Mind you that you can get it back, but there's the $450 fee that they add on top of your past due payments, plus storage and $150 to have a key made. Near as I can figure, they've discovered that repossession is a new profit center for them. Avoid using them if at all possible. Buy the $500 used car cash rather than a loan from these people if that's what it takes. They've repossessed my car twice costing me over $1,000. I had payment arrangements with them, but they picked up the car anyway. These people are not to be trusted.

In 2005, I purchased a 2002 Expedition that was initially financed through WFS Financial until Santander bought their accounts. The amount financed was $24,645.00. I made all 72 payments on the account. Thinking I was making my last payment, customer service informed that yes I had reached the end of my contract but due to deferments, late fees and finance charges, I still owed them almost $12,000.00.
Devastated, I asked her how is it that I owe almost $12,000.00. I admit that I at least made 3 deferments, but certainly that (along with late fees and interest) should not amount to almost $12,000.00. Of course, I got nowhere with them. They could not give me an answer that satisfied me. Here it is 8 years later and I am still paying on a truck that has little or no value because I don't want to further damage my credit. Anyone else would have told them to keep this truck once they were told they still owed $12,000.00 after paying nearly $25,000.00!

I mailed the check to Santander who thanked me and congratulated me for paying off my loan. However, I paid it off in September 2012 and have not yet received my refund. They have acknowledged they owe me the money and have only not paid me due to incompetence or mistakes on their part.
I have made several attempts to have it paid to different addresses, etc. They refuse to provide me with a tracking number or check number. One person in their customer service even told me "We don't have an accounting department." Their customer service supervisors make promises they can't keep. In the trade transaction, I gave the new RV dealer a check for the cost of the new RV minus the trade-in plus the balance owed on the traded-in RV, which they were then going to pay off. They sent a payoff amount which was more than was owed to Santander. Santander verbally confirmed this, but my online account as well as the payment history and paid in full document they sent me only shows the amount applied to pay off the loan. Nothing shows the actual amount paid or the overpayment.
I have done 2 online chats with them and spoken to customer service and a manager, and they all maintain the following ridiculous claims:
1) They have no document that they can send that will show the actual amount I paid.2) They cannot draft a letter, email, or other communication that shows the actual amount paid or the overpayment, even though they can see it on their screen.
3) There is no other person higher than the 1st level manager I spoke with that I can contact. He refused to give me the phone #, email address etc. of his boss, and he maintained that there was no one else in the company I could talk to and no one else who could give me the document I am requesting as one does not exist and it cannot be created due to company policy.

After reading a couple of the posts, all I have to say is that Santander is by far the worst car finance company in the US. Both of my vehicles were repossessed in October. 2012. The first one, they showed up at my door at 8:30 at night, took the car and we never heard another word regarding that vehicle again. I called them to try to get information and each time it changed. I found out through an attorney that that vehicle was sold to a car dealership in upper Nevada. The other vehicle was taken out of a parking lot. Apparently, I was being followed by someone with a camera attached to their car. We called them and like they tell everyone, you have so many days to recover your vehicle, don't believe them! Three days later ,my vehicle was sent to auction and now they want what they couldn't get for it from me, but yet still nothing on the first vehicle has ever come up!
We, too, had our original Loans through HSBC and CitiFinancial. This company needs to be stopped and shut down but from everything I have read, they are not going away anytime soon and will continue to bilk consumers out of billions of dollars and repossess their vehicles. If they tell you that you can recover your vehicle after a repossession, go find the nearest attorney because that is the only way you may get it back, especially if they took an already paid for vehicle! Lock it in a yard behind a fence or in a garage. They will stoop to nothing to take the vehicle, lie to you about your ability to recover your vehicle and then charge you fees to get your stuff back, all without telling you initially where your vehicle is. Don't believe anything they tell you because what one phone rep tells you, another will tell you something different. This is just my two cents from my experience!

I pointed this out to my supervisor, and he agreed they were very suspicious. All of this on camera.
I would like this to stop. I am also into ice skating. About three weeks ago, a repo man followed me around the rink lobby and stared at me. In September 2010, our loan was sold to Santander. Since then it seems our balance hasn't gone down. In 2011, I was laid off but managed to keep making payments - some on time and some a little late, but payments were made. In November 2011, I asked if I could do a settlement which was for an amount that the vehicle was worth. Well the lady said she'd put in a request, but much to my surprise (just found out today December 7, 2012), the request was never put in. In June 2012, I asked for a furlough since I no longer had income. Again, no record of my call. The Tuesday before Thanksgiving, they took my vehicle. Mind you, my original loan was to end this month, but they still have me owing over $8,000.00.
When I finally got a manager, he said I missed payments in 2011. What? Really? Then why didn't I know this since every payment was processed by them? Anyway when I asked what I needed to do to recover my truck, they gave me a figure then said, "Oh when you go to get your truck, you will also need to pay the auction." Wait what? It was supposed to be at one place, according to their letter, but had been taken to the auction the next day after they took it. Now I wouldn't mind going through the motions of getting it back, but the place it's being stored is totally different from where it was said it was and it's not even in my state. Really? They said they charged it off, so anything they get for it will in fact be a gain for them at this point.
Although the truck isn't worth what they say I owe, just like everyone else, they won't tell me why my balance is so high. I'm only behind two months that I know for sure, but they have me behind six - November and December, which payment isn't even due yet, and these two mystery months they claim I didn't pay. Anyone filing a class action, please contact me **. I would like in. I don't know how they can say one thing but then do another. So actually, once they take your car and by the time they contact you, it's a loss cause because they have already set the wheels in motion to sell it, which doesn't even give the consumer a fair chance.
Of course folks will say pay on time, but what about those of us who are out of work due to companies closing and are unable to find a job? Yes, I did what I could to keep up payments. But how can they tell people one thing, knowing for a fact that what they are stating is not true? Guess I'll try to get to the auction and buy it back for less than I owe and put it under my bankruptcy claim since it's senseless to pay them and the auction to more than the vehicle's worth.

In 2011, he had been having some health issues; and in 2011, he had a heart attack. The payments got a few months behind. My father is hard of hearing, so he gave Santander permission to talk to me on the phone. After his heart attack, he tried talking to them and got chest pains. I told my father that I would get the situation resolved. Little did I know that I was dealing with an extremely crooked company. They told me that they would not accept anything less than $4,000 and that the loan was being written off. There was only $1,500 due at that time.
They started calling my cell phone numerous times per day. Repossession people were calling me, showing up at my house, questioning my neighbors, knocking on my door at 1:00 a.m., and leaving notices on my vehicle in my driveway. (Note: I do not own the car, do not drive the car, and I am not on the loan). I called Santander numerous times trying to work something out, and I was yelled at, called a liar, and told that they had pictures of me driving the car all over town. They now want $20,000, the full original amount of the loan, and have not deducted any of the payments that were made for three years. My father never received a letter stating that they were going to write the loan off. They refused payments. This is the worst company I've ever dealt with. I quit calling them because they lie and play games. Every time I spoke to a representative, my blood pressure got dangerously high and I started having anxiety attacks from their tactics.
They have over 4,000 complaints with the Better Business Bureau in Dallas, Texas. Fox News in Dallas did a story regarding Santander's business practices and has noted Santander as the most complained about business in all of Dallas. That speaks volumes! The Texas Attorney General started an investigation in March of 2012 (that investigation is referenced in the Fox News Story in Dallas). I cannot believe that a company is allowed to get away with these business practices! All you have to do is Google "Santander Consumer complaints" and you get pages and pages of the same types of complaints against them. They need to be stopped in their tracks. I will be writing the Attorney General of Texas, the Better Business Bureau in Dallas, Texas, the Consumer Credit Commissioner in Texas, and every news station around to let them know how crooked Santander is.
