What is Varo Bank?

Varo Bank is a fintech company that offers 100% mobile banking services, including checking accounts, savings accounts, the Varo Believe secured credit card, cash advances with no interest and automatic savings tools. Varo doesn’t charge monthly or overdraft fees. Its stated goal is to provide banking solutions that work for everyone and more ways to control your money.

Varo Bank is chartered and regulated as a national bank by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency as of 2020, according to the company. Deposits are insured by the FDIC up to $250,000 per depositor.

How does Varo work?

Varo is a simple banking system to sign up for and use. To start, you can download the app, click on “Sign Up” and follow the instructions. You can also use the Varo website. You need a form of personal ID and your Social Security number. There is no credit check when you sign up for a bank account.

After approval, you should receive your Visa debit card in six to nine business days. You can deposit money into your account via direct deposit; transfer from an external bank account or digital wallet; mobile deposit of a paper check; cash deposit at checkout with various retailers; or using a Green Dot MoneyPak.

To withdraw cash with no fee, you can visit Allpoint ATMs, which are located in places such as CVS, Walgreens and Target.

With Varo, you can also apply for a savings account with an annual percentage yield of 3% if you meet certain requirements; otherwise, the APY is 0.5%. Varo’s other products and features include the following:

  • Varo Believe secured credit card
  • Varo Advance cash advance up to $100
  • Early access to direct deposit funds (up to two days earlier)
  • Cash back for using your debit or credit card
  • Save Your Pay and Save Your Change savings tools
  • Free Varo-to-Varo cash transfers

Varo products

Varo’s products start with its checking account, which you get when you first sign up, but it has several other offerings:

  • Bank account: The Varo checking account has no minimum balance, no monthly fees and no foreign transaction fees. The debit card is contactless, and you won’t be held liable for unauthorized charges. You can send money to other Varo customers instantly and free. You also have access to direct deposits up to two days early.
  • Savings account: The Varo savings account has a starting APY of 0.5%, but you can qualify for a 3% APY if you get direct deposits of at least $1,000 per month, don’t have a negative balance in your checking or savings accounts during the month and keep your savings balance at $5,000 or less for the entire month. The optional Save Your Pay tool lets you transfer a percentage of your direct deposits to your savings account. There's also Save Your Change, which rounds up your transactions to the nearest dollar and adds the difference to your savings.
  • Varo Believe: This secured credit card helps you build your credit. It has no annual fee, no APR and no minimum security deposit. Add money to your account and make purchases, then pay your balance when it’s due. You can see your credit score in the Varo app. To qualify, you need $1,000 or more in qualifying direct deposits and an active Varo bank account without a negative balance and with no overdue advance. Varo reports payment history to the three major credit bureaus.
  • Varo Advance: Get a cash advance of as much as $100 with no interest. There is a small fee with advances of $50, $75 and $100. You have 30 days to pay back the advance in as many payments as necessary. There are several qualifications, such as having a bank account that's at least 30 days old.

Varo fees

One of Varo’s biggest selling points is the lack of fees. There are no monthly maintenance fees or overdraft fees. There are some fees to be aware of, though.

Varo checking account fees include:

  • $2.50 per transaction for out-of-network ATM withdrawals
  • Up to $5.95 for cash deposits via third-party money transfers

Varo policy states that if the funds are not in the account, the transactions will be declined. They allowed $1175.85 to come out of my account when I had a zero balance and now they are taking any money that comes to my account to put toward that amount that shouldn’t have been there in the first place now my bills are going to be late, I have late fees and everything due to them making a mistakes, not to mention that they sent me an alert twice about the same company in the first place the company tried to take $63,008, and $1175.85. In return, my bills are going to be late; late fees are being issued and they keep telling me I have to just follow company procedures. Why didn’t they follow company procedures and decline that amount instead of allowing it to go through?

Since December 2025, I have been trying to access money that my friend sent me. She used the Send to Anyone feature since I was not a Varo customer. I never received the funds and they wouldn't reimburse my friend. Then they started sending me monthly account statements, but when I tried to create an online profile, it said that I do not have an account. So my friend sent money. I never received it. I was not a customer. Now I get monthly account statements. But cannot access "account" because it tells me I do not have an account. When I finally wrote to the BBB, Varo finally emailed me steps to take to access the account. The steps did not work, when I wrote back to the service rep, I never received another response. So now I have had to send another BBB message to hopefully get a human from Varo to help me.

I want to share my recent experience in hopes of bringing awareness to a situation that has placed me in a significant financial hardship. My bank Varo recently closed my account due to what was described as suspicious activity involving two government-issued checks. While I understand and support fraud prevention measures, I am extremely concerned by the lack of communication and transparency throughout this process. I have been informed that my funds may be unavailable for up to 14 business days while an investigation is conducted. During this time, I have been unable to access my own money for basic necessities such as food, gas, and other essential expenses. Despite multiple attempts to obtain additional information, I have not been provided with a clear explanation of the specific concerns being investigated or any meaningful options to access my funds.

I recognize that financial institutions have a responsibility to protect customers and investigate potential fraud. However, there must also be consideration for the impact these actions have on individuals who rely on access to their funds for day-to-day living. Over the coming days, I will be sharing my experience across social media and consumer advocacy platforms to raise awareness about the challenges customers can face when accounts are restricted or closed without adequate communication or access to their funds. My goal is not to attack any individual employee or department, but rather to encourage greater transparency, accountability, and customer support during situations like these. I hope that by sharing my experience, it may help others navigate similar circumstances and encourage financial institutions to balance fraud prevention efforts with the real-world needs of their customers.

Varo Bank is only good if you want your paycheck early. They deposit much faster to your account than most banks with early pay. It STOPS there. They offer a cash advance feature, but after you build up to being able to advance over 100 dollars, they will suddenly drop you back down to as low as 20 dollars then takes forever to build it back up despite you paying your advance back on time.

My big problem with Varo is they will send out emails to you and in your app home page telling you that you are qualified for bigger advances or that you are eligible now for their Believe credit building card then when you log on to apply, then it tells you are denied. Why keep sending me emails daily telling me I'm eligible for this and that when I'm not. When you contact a representative about the confusion, they just give you a generic script-read response. I think this bank is really outdated and out of touch with their main loyal customers. They need a reboot and refresh or they going get left behind. Chime and other fintech are better and more reliable if you are looking for cash advance and reliable and accurate information about your status as their customer.

They need to be investigated. They close many people's account for zero reasons. People didn't do nothing wrong. And they hold their funds hostage. Varo seems to be a bank, but doesn't operate to high standard that banks operates. Their internal system doesn't work well, and need to be improved and upgraded, so they stop suspending and closing people’s accounts. They have some hard core scrutinized system, that need to be changed completely.

Transferring out all my funds. Taking an advance out and moved it out.

By the time I could talk to a human and have the info they requested I had 3 checks direct deposited that I lost also. They refused to put a freeze on the account preventing further hacking. They were not forthcoming, right or cooperative in finding the leak. Instead they kept my paychecks to cover an advance not made by me and closed the account. From there they refused to investigate any further or returning my funds stolen. I honestly feel it was an inside theft. How else would my account only email and password be known. Varo’s advanced system has way too many flaws. I had worked myself up to a $500 credit limit by paying 16 payments on time, always keeping a positive balance. Depositing six times what I normally deposit. Paying reoccurring bills with my Varo secured card. They lowered my limit from 500 all the way down to 100 once they got another on-time payment with no change credit score either… You can get a line of credit at a bank for $500 to protect your account. That’s not gonna go up and down. Varo by doing it so drastic screws their customers when they’re counting on that money to pay bills and they have a plan to pay it down by $100 each month!

I would advise you to open up an account elsewhere as what they advertise is a big complete lie when it comes to their advances! I am a customer that is fighting cancer and winning, but it’s stuff like this that stresses me out. I've always had more than one bank, so I've never really paid close attention to their dis service to their customers. This TERRIBLE bank NEVER wants to honor disputes. Unfortunately, I've used this card for some important purchases, and when I've been done wrong, or paid for a service that wasn't provided, I'd honor protocol filing a dispute, and varo's punk ** doesn't ever have my back. Most banks does their due diligence, and a fair investigation to find out what happened. Not them!! They don't even try! I've been done wrong when it comes to a few purchases and disputed them, and they do nothing! THEY SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO DO BUSINESS!! They don't give a DAMN about their customers.

There are sooo many mobile banks out here that care, and truly lives out their mission statement. I STRONGLY SUGGEST that people bank elsewhere. I've recently had some issues with my varo account, and varo takes NO ACCOUNTABILITY!!! My experience with them is not a good one! Please believe me when I tell you DO NOT BANK WITH THIS BANK! Notice how they aren't really supported positively. That's for good reason. I wish I had NEVER done business with these stupid people. They don't have anyone's best interest at heart. They don't because they don't have a heart. Their day is coming to a close. I've taken my own person poll with other varo customers, and I've gotten a LOT of support. If I get so many people to rate them, we can get them shut down, EVERYWHERE!

We, customers, and people with feelings, and family who depend on our financial institutions to be there for us, and be trustful deserve to have just that. Varo DOES NOT offer a peace of mind! I HATE THIS BANK, and If you knew me, you'd know that I never use that word "hate." It's very necessary. I want to help people make a good financial decision when it comes to your hard earned money. Straight up SKIP this bank! I don't like it when anyone, being business, and/or personal entities take advantage of good people! THIS IS NOT A BANK WHO CARES ABOUT PEOPLE. So, I was still at square one and went through all of that for no reason. What did I do to solve the issue, since they couldn’t give me that simple info, I broke my card and had them send me a new one. Good lord!

You could have offered some customer service so that I could resolve my issue. I didn’t want the money back. It was my fault. Going above and beyond for a customer goes a long way with me. You couldn’t go above and beyond by looking up something simple, therefore, my loyalty ended. If a bank ever offers around the same or better benefits and services; I will be switching financial institutions. That was poor customer service in my opinion. I don’t forgive that easily.

As many data breaches as there have been lately I'm not shocked. Well 24 hours went by they never contacted me. I'm on Social Security Disability. I'm a senior and I had $170 in my account in my one account with them and my believe card I think I had a few dollars on it. I have tried to get a hold of them and they don't answer the phone and then they said, "You got to talk to him through the app. I tried to get into the app. They don't recognize my email any longer and so where the hell is my money.

I'm going to get ahold of Social Security and report them because that is theft from a federal account and they still won't answer my phone. I am broke. I have no money except what's in that account and they won't take care of it. I went to this account because they said they'd pay you 5 days early and I kept getting late fees on my rent because I get paid the second Wednesday of the month and this was like a godsend and now it's a freaking nightmare.

The so called "5 star reviews" of this bank are clearly planted. How could a bank that has literally no customer service (which I didn't know was possible) possibly get a legitimate 5 star rating? This is without question the worst bank operating in the USA and that is saying something. Varo should be sued, investigated, and immediately shut down. I have had nothing but bad experiences since the beginning. Varo has been holding a $1500 deposit now for 11 days. This was a direct deposit and should have never been subject to a hold in the first place.

The deposit was to pay rent which is now very late and I'm now facing eviction proceedings in a few days. Varo has stolen my money and I'm not sure if or when I will be getting the money returned. I can't possibly express how much damage this blatant theft by Varo is causing me. By far the most incredible thing to me is that Varo is still permitted to operate after thousands of similar stories. A total outrage.😠

I filed a dispute with my Varo bank in Feb. and March 2024 for my account being fraudulently messed with. I use tap and pay a lot and It was apparently compromised. They cleared what I had in my bank account and I even contacted Varo's live support on pending charges I seen that I didn't make. They didn't do anything to help me but send me a new card. Then I kept getting emails that I had to verify myself. But my password was changed to log into my Varo, Which to me sounds like Varo remote workers to be honest. I complied and did my police report and filed an IC3 like I was told. Because they did cyber charges as well. Varo made me wait over 90 days to tell me they denied my dispute and didn't give valid reasons.

I kept appealing and my last appeal was in Sept. 9, 2024, and now it's been over the 75-day mark and when I called to see about it they tell me it's still ongoing and I will get an email that I never get by the way. The dispute is #D157 Amount was $6,884.43. Varo sent another email saying they needed the whole police report which I had sent them page by page even the letter from the Federal Trade Commission. Because this cyber attacker took my social and my identity and still has it. I never got my dispute refund, they keep ignoring me. I am fixing to file a class action lawsuit. Because whenever you need to dispute, they don't give you your money back and that isn't a bank to have.

I used to like them, they have pay anyone feature where it's via text, and credit building option, as well as advance you can build higher SUPPOSEDLY, with increased direct deposit and on time payments as well as account balances $0 or higher. I got up to $100, increased my direct deposits amount by $826, paid my advance 20 days early all 3 times and they DECREASED IT BY $50!! And make you chat about it with no way to talk on the phone to see why. And they can't answer the question via chat. That's horrible incentive and makes me want to close my account altogether as it's more a punishment to decrease when I do everything right, instead of rewarding with and increase like the claim. Bad business.

Their customer is basically non-existent. It's even worse for disputes. You either will be given the runaround and waiting in limbo for a decision (almost never in your favor) or they "help" by locking up any Provisional Credit they give you until "after the investigation". You basically have to threaten to take action. That's a slap in the face to customers who use Varo as their primary bank. What's the point of giving a credit (which is supposed to make you whole until they finish their investigation) but making it unavailable to the affected customers.

If there was a negative rating, Varo would get it. This is the worst bank ever. It's impossible to contact customer service about an issue and the agents on the chat feature are not ** and they either don't understand the issue or are just plain dumb. I highly recommend to NOT use Varo. It's very concerning and scary that you cannot speak to a live agent regarding an issue with your money. Run like hell from Varo.

The bank used to have very good customer service. Now the only contact is offshore and lengthy wait time for online support. Nothing replaces a human being. Looking for another bank ASAP. Stop trying save money at customer expense.

Where do I start? Signed up for the direct deposit bonus program. No bonus deposits. Tried to contact customer service, no phone number. Can't chat online, have to use the app. Can no longer log into account online, it just loads and loads and loads. Been doing this for over a week now. Have to use the app. Email address on website for customer service comes back as "no longer in use". Used contact us to send a message, no response from Varo. I just transferred the balance of my money in the account to another bank. Once all transactions have cleared, I'm closing the Varo account.

On 08-15-2024 at 6:33pm, I went to withdraw $500 from a cardtronics ATM inside of a Circle K that did NOT dispense my funds. I called the 800 number on the machine as the manager advised that of course the machine belongs to a third party. After waiting over 25 minutes, the gentleman at the atm customer service number asked for my name once and the transaction ID once..which he quickly then said that he couldn't find. He said that I have to call my bank and do a dispute for a charge back because there is nothing he can do.

I am almost 100 percent sure that he was just clicking his fingers briefly to ACT like he was even really entering my information. I then called the scam bank VARO to dispute the charge and advised them that they have a camera that can clearly show I received no funds. They denied my claim in 15 minutes and said that I needed to provide the video. I was told to get a copy of the video from the store from the VARO dispute department (which would need a subpoena btw). I contacted the atm company again and the lady asked me 3 questions and told me the same thing as the man the night before. Mind you, this $500 was for rent!! I'm filing with small claims court and of course closing the VARO account. They haven't attempted to do any fraud investigation which is what a fraud department is for.

Legally I can just not get a copy of a video from Circle K. I called their corporate office in which the gentleman sent an email to the district manager. I was told later that day from the store manager Amy, that they legally cannot provide a still picture or any video without a warrant and I could file a police report, in which I did. The police said that it's ridiculous because they cannot do anything with the report since I am filing about a machine and not a person taking my money. The officer stated that the atm company also legally has the capability to audit the machine, which is what VARO could have also gotten a copy of.

This is the absolute worst bank. If you use their Varo Believe Card they steal your money and lie about it. They took 500 from my account. Won’t admit they messed up or replace my money. You see their name run! Can’t believe they can get by with this.
