Don't trust their 100% accuracy report. My filing was 100% "accurate" when there was a mandatory missing form. I got a letter from IRS and had to fill out manually and fax them. I paid $95 fees to H&R block for using their online service. They need to fix the software.

I'll start with my wife and I have worked with H&R Block for 30 years. In 2023, my wife did an Emerald cash advance, which we've done in the past and they take it from our tax return so we took our information in filed our taxes and in June 2024, applied from auto loan only to find that H&R charged off the loan. I called the branch, the representative said it was probably some wires crossed and that it was okay so I called the eight hundred number. They did an escalation 6/20/24. They closed it 6/25/24.

After several calls to them, I give up so in February 2025, I return back to the office to file and they said, "By the way, we made a mistake the previous year. You still owe for the advance loan." So they took the money for the advance loan plus all the fees for H&R Block's mistake and the Great part is they ruined our credit and now refuse to fix any of it and none of it was our fault. So much for tax professionals. If you are thinking of doing an Emerald advance, you might want to think it over.

Had my itemized returns (federal, state and city) prepared in Philadelphia for over 20 years with competence in ~2 hours each time. I could see on a screen in front of me exactly what was being entered line by line, thereby being able to ask questions and correct an error if necessary. Moved to NJ 3 years ago and people in 2 Cherry Hill offices were unacceptable in knowledge and attention in entering information. There was no longer the screen available for me to see the returns in progress. After reviewing federal and state returns at home, I found mistakes and omissions. Preparers rarely returned multiple calls or e-mails to answer my questions. Had to return to the offices 3-4 times (for over 10 hours) for corrections, twice for amended returns to be filed because of the preparers' mistakes, and returns omitted in my packet. Paid $595. Hugely disappointed in the company for omitting the client screens, and the tax preparers for their carelessness and refusal to accept responsibility for mistakes. Never received one "I'm sorry".

Why do I pay hundreds of dollars for a professional to do our taxes if they make mistakes and then do not stand by them? Long story short, paid H&R Block to do our taxes again this year. When paying she wanted us to pay another hundred bucks for Peace of Mind to guarantee their audit. Incredulously I asked "wait, does that mean you do not stand behind your work?" Should have been red flag and sign. After I had her explain it in more detail and found out that even if a mistake they would only cover $6k that seemed like a scam. So you do not stand by your work and even if a mistake you limit your liability on your work to a small amount? Well, you guessed it, almost immediately we got a notice back from the State that we suddenly owed another $2000. Well since we did not fall the POM scam no dice. Immediately went over to find out where the mistake was. Not impressed I had to find and correct the next lady on documents.

Fairly simple stuff like if this doc was attached to the filing or not. So even less confidence. Then she said she would file a reply explaining their reasoning. It was now mid March and I specifically asked what would happen if not resolved by 15 April to which she said "oh no we will have a reply well before then". Again I was sadly correct. No answer until now May and State says still owe. Why would I pay hundreds of dollars if you will not stand by your work? I can make mistakes filing my own taxes without paying you hundreds.

I've been to the office multiple times, hours wasted, and on numerous phone calls to no avail. I still don't have my refund and they can't find it!! Refuse to do anything about it. I have left three different reviews on Yelp. Every time I get a nice message with a corporate line to call. It is just someone detailing my experience. They are super nice saying how sorry they are. I get a reference number, told I will have someone call me in 3-5 days to discuss further. Not one time have I received a call back. Extremely rough customer service. 100% ignoring a rather serious issue. Immature and will never use their services.

I will not EVER use H&R Block to do my taxes again. On Feb. 11, 2025 the Barbourville, KY office did out taxes. While all of the people in this office are very nice and helpful for tax preparation, apparently H&R Block has instructed the branches to steal your money! We paid $300 for our tax preparation, and when we got home and looked over our receipt that evening, we discovered that the cost to do the taxes was indeed only $260 dollars. There was an “optional” charge of $40 listed on the receipt for the “Peace of Mind” clause. We had no idea what this was or why we were charged it with our agreeing to it. Apparently this clause covers up to $6,000 if they make an error in your taxes. I was always under the impression if THEY made an error they would cover it anyway…

After looking at the clause we saw where you had 7 days to decline it for a full refund, so we called the next day asking for our $40 back. We pointed out that no one asked us if we wanted it in the first place, nor were we advised that they were charging our credit card this extra fee. The last I heard, doing that was illegal and called “theft.” They told us that they were instructed to include it on all the taxes they prepared. We advised them on Feb. 12, 2025 to refund us the $40 dollars. It is now May 3, 2025 and we have still not received it even after at least a dozen attempts. We notified them in writing and via email requesting it, as this is what the internet advised to do. In the process of researching this online we found where that have had class action lawsuits filed against them (and were ordered to make restitution in the millions) for THIS EXACT SAME thing.

They have been unlawfully charging this since at least 2002, and apparently they get more money from taking the $40 from millions of tax payers than they pay out in fines and restitution, so they have no incentive to stop stealing from us. In speaking with various attorneys it would cost me approximately $500 to get my $40 back… So they may have gotten away with this, but if they lose enough business because of this illegal practice, they may stop doing it. I hope this review will save others the stress (and $40) of trying to make the huge corporations do the right thing by standing up for the little guys once and for all.

I engaged Agent ** to handle my tax preparation on April 9th at 11219 York Rd, Cockeysville, MD. She promptly scanned all of my documents into the system and informed me that while she could not complete my taxes that same day, she would contact me on either April 11th or 12th to review and finalize the filing. Unfortunately, I never received any follow-up communication from her.

On Monday, April 14th—just one day before the filing deadline—I contacted the office and was informed that Ms. ** was not present and her availability was unknown. A representative assured me that a message would be relayed to her to call me back urgently. I also contacted the customer service line, where another representative scheduled a call with Ms. ** for Tuesday, April 15th (the tax deadline). Regrettably, Ms. ** failed to return my call on Monday and did not honor the scheduled call on Tuesday.

** demonstrated a concerning level of unprofessionalism and unreliability. She neglected to provide even a brief communication to inform me that she would not be completing my return. Her failure to fulfill her responsibilities placed me under significant and unnecessary stress, scrambling to meet the filing deadline at the last minute. I cannot recommend her services based on this experience.

If I could give a negative star, I would. I received a notice back in November of 2024 regarding a possible assessment from the DOR for our 2021 tax return. I made multiple attempts to contact a tax rep at HR block, with ZERO response. When I did finally get ahold of someone, probably 1.5 months later, I was told we needed to file an amended return, as there was a missing W2 on the original return and we had to pay almost $400 back to the DOR. Fast forward a bit, it is now April and I am still fighting this, they are denying my claim (their "peace of mind" option) stating I never gave the documentation to the original prep person, which is completely inaccurate.

This company is IMPOSSIBLE to get in touch with. Their customer service people are rude and I was hung up on once, one person sent me to some random banking center which I asked to speak to "client claims," then a third rep told me "client claims" has no direct line to call and everything had to be done via email. What kind of joke of a company does this? How can they sit here and charge me hundreds of dollars for "peace of mind" never stating EVERYTHING HAD TO be submitted online and then accuse me of lying and deny my claim.

This company is an embarrassment and shouldn't be allowed to "help" people with their taxes. It seems like a scam and false advertising. I spoke with client claims department when someone FINALLY returned my phone call and they again, insisted I never provided the documents and continue to deny my claim. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY + ESPECIALLY DO NOT PAY FOR "PEACE OF MIND" because it is far from what they provide.

I just checked reviews for HR Block. I should have checked first. Shame on me! I’ve never seen so many negative reviews. Check BBB. average 1.07 out of 5!! I did not think it possible for a company to have such a low rating. And all others are about the same. Check CONSUMERAFFAIRS: 1,807 1-star ratings, vs. 79 5 star. How’d I miss this? Is there a worse tax prep company in the USA? All others I checked are about the same.

I just finished a bizarre tax prep experience with H&R Block in Douglasville GA. My intent is NOT to bash the people involved, so I will not use names. But, BUYER BEWARE. This is my second attempt to work with Block. First time, the tax preparer made an EGREGIOUS error. She botched the capital gains calculation, leading to a serious flaw in my return. Luckily, I paid for their “Peace of Mind” guarantee. Long story short, Block paid me $6,000 to correct the error. No apologies, just move on.

The entire staff was gathered around the front desk … chatting! My preparer among them. She know I was sitting there, but ignored me. Finally, I walked to the group to get their attention. Block is VERY casual about providing service, at least in this office, I needed an extension. The preparer took minutes online to find the form. Finally, she handed me the completed form, but it had a serious error error. She told me that I would not have to pay taxes due until October. WRONG! The law states that all taxes due have to be paid with the extension. They wanted to charge me $99 for this! And it was in error! If we all took this approach, the US Govt would be out of business!

I did not yet know this. I went to the front desk. She was unable to process the check to pay for the extension. She tried many times to get the reader to accept the check, but it did not work. Finally, she gave up and said I’d have to pay cash… or go somewhere else. I returned with cash. At this point, I was angry. The person at the front desk seemed irritated to have her office chatting interrupted. I should not have gotten angry, but it was now more than an hour, two trips to the Block office and STILL no end in sight. Rather than deal with their incompetence, They called the police. How bizarre!

I then went to an online service and got the extension in less than 5 minutes pating estimated taxes due. And IRS accepted it!! I cost me $0!!! With my accepted extension, I can now take my time to complete my taxes, but needless to say, NOT with BLOCK.

Oh … there appears to be NO Block address to lodge a complaint!! So I will post it on BBB, a public forum. And other forums , Hopefully Block wall read this and replace staff with competent people,

It took me almost two hours to get to his point with Block, something I got done in less than 5 minutes with a FREE online service.

So, a word to the wise… save time, aggravation and your money; take your tax business elsewhere. I wish I had.

My return is uncomplicated and did not change much from last year. In fact there was one less document this year. I was not really given an explanation of why the cost skyrocketed. Actual rating is about minus five stars.. Constantly crashed during use, necessitating dozens of logins and loss of entered data. Demanded an upgrade to enter 1099-INT income, a problem that was resolved by the only customer service person I had contact with who seemed to understand that the problem was a problem and was a software glitch. The return to last screen completed function was a last screen minus ten button. Dropped several of my income providers from the previous year including my bank (see 1099-INT above), necessitating hours of data reentry because of the constant crashes and relogins. Was told by different online chat personnel that the problem was 1) resolved (it wasn't) and 2) that reverting to the proper software would cause loss of all data entered and further punishment would be enacted in the form of not providing any access to previous returns, no online support, and no support for audit or review.

The automated phone call in was useless and stupid, and could not match a valid SSN to my return. It finally defaulted to transferring me to a real person, who was the only one who actually helped (Thanks, Ethan). After filing my state return, the wrong form was displayed for the payment voucher and printing the forms would have required 70 mostly empty pages, since the return was mostly just retirement and SS income, with no deductions or credits, and payment for taxes due.

In 2023 the software did not calculate penalties or interest for not making quarterly payments, told me it had reviewed them and they were included in the amount due. They weren't and this resulted in threatening letters and demands for payment four months later. After providing the details to Block, they promised to follow up on the problem, and reimburse me for the penalties and interest, none of which happened. I'm waiting to see what happens with these this year. At least the 2024 return showed interest and penalties and did add them properly. It remains to be seen if they are correct.

Pretty disappointed in the series of events that occurred here. This was our first time using H&R Block. Things seemed somewhat simple, we didn't have any issues making an appointment. Greeted first thing, we were taken back to a desk. I had everything prepared/labeled/organized and necessary calculations. We sat there as our tax advisor entered everything into a computer and waited. The amount we owed for Federal and State at the end of it was incredibly daunting. We paid the obnoxious $650 and then additional $40 for the premium in case there were amendments/audits, etc.

We went home, I immediately paid my taxes but it was my fault that I didn't run through the completed forms first before doing so. After reviewing, I noticed an error that put our federal taxes at $6k less than what we actually owed and our state at a refund instead of a $850 payment. I called and she corrected it and resent it but then I had noticed there was also a mistake on my rental income property. She corrected and re-filed the amendment.

I called corporate and complained about the $700 we paid for our taxes to be wrong, for how much we mistakenly owed on federal and state taxes and for all the mistakes after. Looking through the charges, we were charged for a form that they had also mistakenly totaled for expenses on a rental property. H&R Block said they would correct everything and try and put in a refund for the wrong charge. The person they assigned to correct it didn’t give me a call the day corporate mentioned and followed up on a Monday after the weekend saying that the person assigned became super busy and they assigned someone else.

That person gave me a call and went through everything. Corporate said they're expediting the refund of the H&R Block charge. Received an email indicating the refund needed to be accepted. None of the credentials worked and now that payment is now locked and if we don't accept it in 2 weeks, it will expire. It is not available in the My Block profile app. I should have definitely checked my tax forms but to have a tax professional get so many items incorrect, overcharge us for getting something so important wrong, making refunds as difficult as possible and ultimately causing us to overpay federal and state, I will not be using H&R Block ever again.

I have been using H&R Block tax software for over 20 years, and for the most part it worked OK and good enough especially for capital gains and losses and later rental property depreciation. However as the years went by the software became more bugged with technical and customer service weak. Most glitches and tax advice was left up to Google or Youtube. The price of H&R software also became very expensive, but still less than $350 to have them done in their office on the same software. My rating of 2 stars out of extreme frustration having to download and reload the software and updates several time to finish my 2024 taxes.

Customer service could not help me from their scripted answers. Needless to say 20 years is enough and time to move on to a better product we all hear about. The issue is the "Tax Pro" messaged me saying my return is ready to be e-filed and to feel free to ask questions. Since I owed, I decided to ask the tax pro for some advice on how to setup a payment plan with the IRS. No response after a couple days. I asked again and waited a week. Still no response.

I tried to go about it myself in requesting a payment plan from the IRS website. I know Something got messed up because the IRS is planning to withdrawal the full amount on April 15th that I don't have. So I scheduled an appointment with the local H&R Block office and the only response "Sorry, there is nothing I can do." So I tried calling their support line and turns out the person on the other end is just a customer service rep and has nothing to do with taxes. Well, it is now time to part ways with H&R Block.

I chose Block because of brand recognition and because I borked my wife's S-Corp filing for '23. The price to fix the problem and file the amended return was fair, so we let them file our joint return for '24. That's when it hit the fan. They got my wife's LLC name wrong on the '24 1120-S, which we noticed and had corrected. Initially we were told my wife's taxes would come to about $4,800. A week before filing deadline, the Block agent called and said we'd owe $21K federal and $4K state. I sputtered that was impossible, the agent said, "oh wait .. I was looking at the wrong thing, it's only $12,000 for the federal."

I had already run the calculations with TaxAct (correctly this time, I hope), and our total tax for '24 filing jointly was just over $8K. I told the agent just send me a bill for whatever it is we owed for prep fees, but we'd be filing them on our own. Never heard from this agent again. Sloppy, slow, unprofessional, and careless. If it comes to fixing things again, it will be through a (hopefully) qualified and diligent professional, and not another buffoon. Suffice to say, it would be with someone else besides H&R Block.

Also, there is no way to set up a payment plan for money owed without crazy fees. Basically the only option it kept coming up with was to directly withdraw funds from my account on or before the tax deadline or write a paper check... Those were the only options. Or pay over $100 for an installment plan. There were no options for a simple payment plan. None of it made any sense!

H&R Block should not make it so difficult when customers owe federal and state taxes. It's like they're trying to rob you blind. I will never use H&R Block again after this fiasco. I don't recall the exact issues of years past, but it was something similar - that I file taxes and the IRS rejects it for some reason that is crazy obscure and not at all solvable without tech support. This year, the IRS accepted the return but with messages.

The message said, some box on the header had not been checked YES, so I needed to complete another form to change my address, but I have not changed my address. So what the heck. Turns out there is no way to check YES on the header in the software, but if I go to the paper form, there is also nowhere to check YES. So my only option is to file the 8822-B form for both companies and send a letter explaining the the IRS that I didn't actually change addresses, but just tossing this in to cover my ** because H&R Block said I need to do that.

Half an hour (the shortest time I ever spent on support call) to learn this and when I start to ask other questions to try to troubleshoot, I just kept getting, "I'm not a tax professional." I asked if there are any tax pros who can help. No, there's no tax support by phone or online for this product. Only locally. Well, maybe you might get lucky and find a business tax pro at your local H&R Block, but I called both local offices and none of the tax pros there know anything about form 1120S. These taxes are not that hard, but I'm starting to see why people pay hundreds of dollars to have simple returns filed by business tax accountants. There's just no good software to do it yourself. My taxes are so easy, I should have just done the whole thing on paper.

I've read IRS is not going to accept paper filing soon, maybe this is the last year. But not sure if that applies to business taxes. Sorry, off topic. But the point of this review is to save the small business person a whole lot of frustration. Don't use this product. I was actually shocked when I came on Consumer Affairs to write this review to see how low H&R Blocks ratings are. My one-start isn't really contributing much, not hurting at all because they have over 1800 one-star reviews. I wish I had consulted this first. But I have been using their product for personal taxes for a decade. Have gone back and forth with Turbo Tax, but went with HRB to save a little money. Forget it. I'm so done with them. I'll get an accounting degree and learn to file my own business taxes before I use H&R Block again.

I have been using H&R Block online for last 16 years and have noticed a gradual decline of service quality. This year for the first time, I choose to use the FREE filing and this is my experience.

    - First time, my entries disappeared.
    - Second time, I cannot unselect something I selected by mistake. I tried every option. The only way I should start all over again.

    - Third time, bye bye H&R Block,

Tried using H&R block online..it's not rocket science.. Said was free spent hours doing our taxes...got to the end they wanted a fee of $115.00!! Kept saying NO NO NO TO all the boxes that kept popping up with offers trying to get us to pay for AI or a some advice..so should of definitely been free service..they're a joke and gets you to the end..and WILL NOT LET YOU FINISH unless you pay them this HUGE FEE. STAY AWAY..there's others out there that are truly free..

I have used H & R Block to file taxes for several years. I accidentally added Tax Pro to my cart, a cost of $55. I have now been on the phone for 20 minutes trying to get this simple item removed. There is no option to remove it from the cart on the website. This is completely outdated and a waste of my time as a consumer and I feel that I will be using a different tax software it the future.
