I have been a loyal customer of Citicards since early 1997. My credit score is in the 700's and I have NEVER had a late payment. I received a letter stating my interest rate was going from 12.24% to 29.99% on November 30, 2009. I do have the option to opt out and pay off my balance under the current terms, but that closes my account. I am SOOO upset about this. This is how banks are treating loyal customers ?? It's unreal. I could not afford a minimum payment that is based on 29.99%, so I've had to opt out. Now I have a 5 digit balance to pay off, and I lose all of my spending privileges.

I had a Sears credit card which was not originally issued by Citicard but during the course of time, Citicard took over. At some point, I stopped using the card and told them I wished to close the account and started paying them off. After Hurricane Ike and the months following, I felt the budget become very tight and attempted to keep up on all payments in good faith. As the balance got to just a few hundred dollars and I was in sight of paying the account off, I paid the account just one time late and it snowballed into a disaster with late fees and an APR rate of 29.90 percent. There are continous phones calls. They would send letters by mail and once even sent an overnighted letter asking me to contact them at specific phones numbers. They said they would work on a payment plan for the small balance to avoid costly fees. These phone numbers never worked. Nor did the phone numbers on the statements other than the regular customer service. I talked to them and asked them about a payment plan to pay off the very small balance of less than $250.00 but the fees have skyrocketed the balance and they are intent on collecting all the fees and the 29.90 APR increased. My sister cares for my 76 year old mother with a heart condition and despite her request that they stop calling her home phone. Her home phone is not my contact number but they indicated they would continue to call and harass my family. I even gave them my e-mail address and even appealed to Sears to see if they could intervene to stop the harassment. They were not very sympathethic or concerned that Citicard was treating their customers, now former customer, in such a terrible way. Even to the extent to harass a sick elderly lady.

I too received a letter from Citicards recently informing me of the interest rate increase from 19.99% to 29.99%, either accepting those terms or opt out. I called them and asked to speak with a manager, she said that the ONLY other thing I could do is to turn the current balance into a loan with the current 19.99% interest rate!!!??? Are you kidding? A new loan is all I want. I told them repeatedly that this letter is highly unacceptable and in VERY poor practice. Oh, they did say that this interest rate increase was to be able to give credit to other consumers,...so now I have to pay for someone else to have credit? Where are the lawmakers in all this? Who is getting more of my money? WHO WILL DO SOMEHTING ABOUT THESE COMPANIES INCREASING THEIR RATES AND NOT STOPPING? This makes me want to just stop paying them.

December 2008 I transfered mileage from my mother's acct to mine, there was no fee to do this, Delta airlines accidentally charged me a fee. I did not know Delta did this, I thought it was Citicard, so I called Citicard to find out what the charge was for, but the customer service person did not even know what the charge was and said I purchased something out of the US. I told her I have not left the US and she said well I do not know what the charge is and would not remove the charge. Then in Feb. 2009 I got an email from Delta apologizing for their error. I then called Citicard again but they would do nothing to help me by removing the unneccesary charge from my acct. I did not pay it since it was in error. I wrote a letter twice to S. Larson including the email from Delta saying the charge was in error, but it has ended up being a waste of time. One of the responses I got back from S. Larson was so off the subject I wondered why she bothered to response back to me. You would think upon receiving proof that the charge was in error that Citicard would be reasonable, however that was not the response. I started out trying to solve this mess before it got out of hand right after it happened, then shortly afterwards I had some major health problems and could not continue with trying to fix this. In September when I was able to start trying again to fix this I wrote to a Terry Dial in New York hoping someone would be reasonable. She never even acknowledge my letter. So here I am still trying to fix this mess before the finance charges on $4.50 end up being straight out more crazy than they are. I have always paid my balance in full and I do not like having finance charges that have no reason in being there in the first place. I do feel Citicard is stubborn and uncaring and really does not want to solve this unless forced to. Which is really sad on their part. I certainly hope this does some good, it has gone on long enough and I do not know what else to do. I would like to change credit cards, but this needs to be solved first. I have no respect for Citicard or the people who work for them. Thank you.

This new rate increase is an embarrassment to Citibank. I have two mortgages totalling $600,000 and I have a 15 year credit card relationship CitiGroup. I plan to close out my relationship with Citigroup. This latest credit card manuever is a repugnant move. I'm unemployed and still paying well above my monthly amounts including interest. Citigroup should be sued for purposely devaluing the company. That is, not only will the bad customers leave, by the way they were going to leave anyway, but now the good customers will leave as well. Citigroup won't be able to pay back the TARP money as a result. This could have been avoided. I hope the government takes Citigroup apart piece by piece. Every Citi executive should pay back salary for such irresponsible behavior.

Around two months ago I received a letter from the named Credit Card Company, offering me 7.99% interest if I closed the account, if not it would go up to 14.99%. However, having read that if you close out the credit card it will hurt your credit score. I decide to keep the card since this was an older account. This past week I received another letter from Shell Mastercard, informing me that they were closing my account, at 14.99% interest. Keep in mind, I had never been late, missed a payment, always send more than was due, and was a good customer. Their reason; too many revolving charge accounts, and they refered me to Equifax. Since I already subscribe to Idenity Guard, it enables me to keep up with my credit scores any time I wish. My score was 762 with Equifax, and the numbers were about the same for the other credit report agenty. How can a company that you have never been late with, all your other bills are in order, and your credit scores are on in the upper 700.s just close out your account at an interest rate of 14.99%? Had they have told me in the letter two months ago that they were going to close my account. Then I would have taken the 7.99%, and let them have their card. Do we have no protecting al all from this kind of action that is being done by banks? I welcome you to check my credit reports, and while I may be in debt, they are all payed on time. Two things, I shouldn't have to pay 14.99%, and surely you can see the under handed nature of this situation used by Shell Mastercard. Number 2, my credit scores are very important to me, and I should not suffer my score to go lower because of them. If they did this to me, then you can believe that there are more people being done the same way. When I called them, they refered me to the Equifax credit agencuy. In which I replied: "I just looked at my account and there is nothing wrong with it. Please help me, and all those who are being stabed in the back by the banks. What other action can I take?

After being a long-time Citicard customer and never missing a payment we received a letter in the mail saying they were closing our account. When we called to find out why they stated it was due to a report from Experian. The only thing we could find with Experian was that we had opened a furniture charge account when our daughter went to college (it seems consumers should be rewarded for stimulating the economy by buying stuff rather than being penalized). For some reason this account was considered negative on our credit report (we have since paid it off).
So we called Citicard and they stated they were getting tons of complaints but that their unchangeable policy is that they are closing certain accounts they deemed to have too much risk. I pointed out to them that we had never missed a payment to which they agreed but that their risk department was who made the decision and it is not possible to speak with anyone who was involved in that decision. So at this point we have a 'dead' account with a $14K balance that we will pay off because we are law-abiding citizens. Our unchangeable policy is that we don't do business with people that treat good customers this way. From the many complaints on this site I can see we're not alone in our feeling that Citicard is way out of line here.

I believe CitiCards is doing something fraudulent that needs to be investigated. I've been a stellar customer for over 17 years, always paid on time, always paid more than the minimum amount due. A few months ago I received a phone call from them that my payment had not been made. I immediately went online to my bank account to see that the payment had not cleared, even though I mailed it on the same day as three other payments, all of which had cleared my account already. As the CitiCard payment had not posted, I immediately paid them via my checking account to rectify what they were deeming a "late payment." I expressed my concern that this not affect my credit standing, the payment had been mailed early, I cannot control the postal service or what CitiBank does with it -- they assured me it would not. I don't think this payment got lost in the mail -- I think CitiCards destroyed it intentionally to create this "default" against my account. Now I, too, received the rate increase to 29.99% from 14.99% -- doubing my rate, with only the option to opt out and close my account, which will also harm my FICO score. In sharing this dilemma with someone I work with, she stated that the exact same thing has happened to her husband's account. He too, had mailed the payment, but they called to say it was late. They've done the same thing to him, forcing the opt out. I truly believe CitiCards has fraudulently destroyed payment checks to give them ground to stand on with this corporate greed rate increase. What are the chances that in 17 years my mail payments always arrived without issue and were posted timely -- and now within the span of several weeks, I learn this has happened to not only me, but a close friend, too! Please look into fraudulent activities at CitiCards! In tough economic times they're citing their need to do this to extend credit to others! What about the tough economic times their stellar current customers are facing? We've taken salary decreases and salary freezes! I've still paid them their money due each month, faithfully and on time -- now they turn around and inflict this shameful and harmful action upon us! Close CitiCards down --put their executives out of jobs -- stop this corporate greed now, Mr. Obama and Congress!

I have 3 CitiBank credit cards. I use all three for low interest balance transfer cards. I've been a customer for close to 15 years and have always paid on time because I didn't want to lose my low interest rate.
CitiBank recently raised the rate on 2 of the 3 cards I have to 29.99% because I did not opt-out in time. I called Citi on 10/11 and was suppose to Opt-out by 9/30. Opting out meant that my card would be closed and my interest rate would stay the same. I called CitiBank and told them they I would rather default on the card and file bankruptcy than pay 29.99%. Even though I've never filed for bankruptcy before, I do realize what bankruptcy means to me and my family. But, screw the banks if they think they can rip-off the common people. It's just not right. My husband called his credit card companies and found that 2 out 3 of his cards are doing the same thing. I've written every congressperson I can think of to help fix the situation but now-a-days, I have little faith in our congress. Hopefully, something good will come out of this situation. But that will only happen if enough people stand-up for what is right, even if it doesn't help that person personnally. The banks do what they do because they only care about their bottomline . . not the person or that person's family.

I have been getting repeated alerts on my account. They say that there might be fraud, and freeze my account. Each time they do it, it has been me buying something. Once I bought some clothes for $20, and they froze my account. I had to call them that it was me that was making the purchases. A few months later, they froze my account again saying that there was a high risk to my account. I called in, and they told me the reason why they thought there was high risk is because I hadn't used the account in a few months. I had my account frozen again because I signed up for paypal. I did not even purchase anything. All I did was sign up. I also had my account frozen because I bought a ticket for public transport worth $10. Each and every time they alert me of potential fraud, there was no fraud. I think they have a highly sensitive system, and it makes things highly inconvenient for the customers. I am sick and tired of calling them each time I make a purchase. The worst part is, when there is actually fraud, Citicard does not do anything. I think their customer service is horrible. I went on google to type in Citicard complaints, and this website is the only thing I found. It is sad that they don't even have a complaints department. I received a rate increase letter from Citibank. It states the following changes, which are raising all interest rates to the previous "default" rate of 29.99%:

"Variable APR for purchases is being increased. As of September 15, 2009, this purchase APR is 29.99%. The variable APR for default is being increased. As of September 15, 2009, this default APR is 29.99%. The variable APR for cash advances is being increased. As of September 15, 2009, this cash advance APR is 29.99%."

The option is to "opt-out" which will close the account but leave the rate at 18.99%. I called Citibank. They confirmed that I am not late and there is no problem with my account and told me they are, "increasing the rates to 29.99% across the board to everyone. I'm sorry, there's nothing I can do." How can the answer from Citibank be true? On their website homepage, they are offering 0% promotional terms! So, is this an error on their part? Is this gouging? Is it misleading and fraudulent that they advertise 0% and then increase current customers to 29.99%?

What is the Net Cost? For example, calculated on the NFCC site, for $23,000.00 owed:
1.Current interest: 18.99%; Monthly payment: $2700.00, Will be paid in 10 months; Interest paid: $1903.13

    2. "New" interest: 29.99%; Monthly payment: $2700.00, Will also be paid in 10 months; Interest paid: $3190.15

The extra I will pay in interest due to the rate increase is $1287.02. Obviously someone who cannot pay off as aggressively will really get hit, I cannot imagine making the "minimum" payment under this new interest rate. What is this doing to service people, students, the E=elderly? This is gouging. Citibank is acting more like organized crime than an organization.

I don't want an attorney to contact me. I am requesting that your organization leverage all available resources against practices like this. I have contacted my senator, the FTC and the White House. Everyone who is faced with this letter should do the same. "The squeaky wheel can at least be heard". Thank you.

I have been a customer with them for over 14 years and have paid at least 10% to 20% of the balance and sometimes full payments. I am definitely going to opt out, I have had this card for 4 years and have been late with a payment (less than one week late) one time. Beneath the "Earn Interest Back Every Month" Program they do have stated that "We reserve the right to change or end this program with 30 day's prior written notice..." Yes we know that. I would like to join Jim, of Humle, Tx, who wrote here encouraging us to default on our accounts, since that is what these shady business practices deserve, but I would untimately punish myself worse, with a bad credit rating, and cause more backlash by other creditors. I thought if you do close your account, that they could not later make changes, but others said rates could still change. Is this true. We all have to write our congressmen/women and senators. Of course they know what's going on, but if we all don't complain, they'll just sit on their ** and let those credit card companies rape us. After 9/11, all air traffic was banned for 3 days. People were stranded with no way to get home. In the middle of that national emergency, hotels that raised their rates at that time were prosecuted. How is this any different? We are now in the middle of a deep national recession - why is Citibank allowed to do this, especially since our taxes bailed them out and paid for their multimillion dollar golden parachutes?!

Raising the rates to 29.99% on new purchases - I could understand that. We all would have a choice not to use the card and pay those criminal rates. But to change the rates on previous purchases has got to be stopped. We can stop this if we all contact our representatives. Our D.C. representatives love the millions they get from lobbyists, but they can't stay there and continue to receive those millions if they don't get reelected. They will listen to us if we complain in huge numbers.

I have been a loyal customer of Citi Cards for many, many years. I have always paid my bill on time and more than the minimum. In May 2009, I received a notice from them that "my account had been compromised" and they were closing my account and re-issuing another card number. I called them, as I thought someone had stolen my identity, but no, someone had stolen thousands of card numbers from THEM; therefore, the new card number. I had a 5.9% interest rate all these years, due to excellent payment and credit rating. I have NEVER received a bill since May 2009, and have called repeatedly and spoken with many different persons, who all told me different "stories" - but one lady was nice enough to tell me to just write on my calendar the 15th of every month and pay the bill whether or not I receive a bill or not! So, I began doing that and all of a sudden I FINALLY get a notice in the mail saying my account had not been paid and my interest rate was 29.99%!! After repeated calls and conversations with many different people, I finally got this straightened out (or so I thought) and the interest went back down to 5.9% and they took off the late fees and took my payment (free) over the phone. Same thing happened the next month - I did pay on-line on the 15th of the month, but it was never credited to my account and never taken out of my bank account! I think this was just a SCAM in order to raise my interest to 29.99% from my rate of 5.9% and I told them so! This has happened EVERY month since May. After being promised on October 4 by "Ashish" (from India) that it would be lowered back to 5.7% and everything credited back, AGAIN, today, October 19, I received a notice in the mail (they can't send me bills, but can send late notices!) that my interest would be raised to 29.99% because, and I quote "To continue to provide our customers with access to credit, we have had to adjust our pricing. The terms of your account will be changing. These changes include an increase in the APR for purchases to 29.99% and will take effect November 30, 2009." I called and was on the phone over 3 hours - on hold, then with regular customer service, supervisors and supervisors of supervisors. I was told I could close my account and keep the 5.9% rate, which I opted to do. NOW, I am worried that they will lie to me again and no matter if I pay my bill early, as I usually do, "something" will happen that it doesn't post or they don't receive it, etc., and it will revert to the 29.99%. I honestly and truly believe they are committing fraud, and believe something should be done! I have been on the Internet and seen thousands, upon thousands, of complaints similar to mine - wherein we have been long-time, loyal, paying customers and Citi has, without reason, raised interest rates, said they didn't receive payments, said payments were late then they weren't, and other similar complaints. With all the "Obama bail-out money" they received, this should NOT be happening to honest, hard-working Americans. I hereby request to file a formal complaint against Citi Card, as I deem they are fraudulant liars who are trying their best to make honest, hard-working, paying Americans make it to where there is no way they can pay the 29.99% interest rate that is thrown upon us FOR NO REASON. I honestly believe Citi Card is a major contributor to the downfall in the economy of this country, in raising interest rates on millions of decent, hard-working Americans (like me!), who pay their bills, and pay their bills on time. There is no way a person could pay 29.99% interest rate, especially when you have been told your interest rate is a low one (like my 5.9%) and they jack it up to 29.99% for no reason, other than their excuse of "...we have had to adjust our pricing." I, along with millions of others, have done absolutely nothing for our interest rates to go up that high - I have always paid my bills and paid on time. I believe Citi Card is ripping us all off and making it impossible to pay. So....I "opted out" and closed my card and my interest rate will remain 5.9% --- that is, until they decide that I didn't pay one month, or they didn't receive my payment on time, or some other lame excuse, and then raise it to 29.99% as they've been trying to do since May. There is no reason for this! Citi Cards are one of the main reasons this economy is so bad, and this country is going down the tubes. This is unethical and fraudulant and needs to be stopped. I hope and pray that my credit is not affected by this ordeal with Citi Cards. God Bless America and, as President Obama's long-time pastor said, and I quote... "God damned" Citi Cards!

If they increase my apr to this outrageous amount - how can I or anyone for that matter who is trying to get out of debt manage to accomplish it without filing bankruptcy? Do they want us to default on our accounts? I have already had one card company inform me that they do not think I can pay the debt so they keep lowering my available credit and trying to increase my apr even though I am paying them 3 times the minimum due to pay it off as quickly as possible. They told me maybe I should refinance my home or sell a vehicle to save money - can't refinance a mobile home and need vehicles for work. I opted out on that card. I called Citi after receiving their letter today and they informed me that there is nothing they can do on my account and they cannot give me a reason for the increase except that they are doing it to a lot of accounts-my only option is to opt out. Guess that is one way to get rid of my credit cards because at this rate I will have to opt out of all of them even if I don't owe them anything because I can't afford the interest rate and I know the rest of them will be sending letters soon. After recently purchasing a home thru Bank of America where I was told I had excellent credit and debt ratio and receiving a home loan with a very low interest rate, two weeks later I get a letter from Citibank saying due to a negative credit report they are increasing my interest rate to 29.99%. I have a copy of my credit report that B of A gave me and there was nothing negative on it. Bank of America would not of given me a mortage loan if I had. Citibank down right lied about my credit report in order to raise my interest rate. Now this new interest rate is higher by double of any of the credit cards I paid off when I transferred to this account. How can this bank do this. Isn't 29.99% illegal, isn't that loan sharking. Who in todays age can afford such a rediculous interest rate. Someone needs to help. If I close this account to keep the old interest rate is that really going to hurt my now excellent credit? Please someone look into this highway robbery from a bank us taxpayers helped out.

I have used my CitiGroup AMEX card for several years for my regular purchases. I pay the entire balance off each month--with a couple of exceptions--and accrue decent reward points. I took the time to review my statement today and found that my card is now charged a fee, computed and compounded DAILY, based on the balance I carry. There is no grace period, and the fee is roughly equivalent to the value of my reward points.

I want to preface this statement with the fact that i had never had a late payment with them and furthermore, this was the first blight on my credit history since we are doing a short sell on our house and there is obviously a missed mortgage payment. We had no recourse. Other than that, I have a very clean credit history and I'm meticulous about paying bills.

When there was a glitch between my bank and Citi, I was not notified until AFTER the due date so I was charged a a returned check fee, late fee, and finance charges. The APR jumped from %0 to 29.99% for that very first month. They did refund the returned check fee and late fee for that month, but said I had to make a payment before they could send the account in for review to determine if they could drop the interest rate back to 0%. I made the payment. They said via on-line customer service that they would not drop the interest. Before I found time to call back to argue the point, the same thing happened again. They tried to withdraw the money on the due date for the second month. A returned check fee, late fee, and finance charges were again levied against the account. Devious practice. It seems purposeful set-up so Citi can immediately raised interest rates and charge late fees. I can prove the money was in the checking account so given proper notice I would have been able to avoid all fees and all finance charges.

This caused me to be 2 days late paying, and whithin the week was informed that my interest rate was jacked up by more that twice what it had been. Immediately paid off more than half the balance and paid off the rest 20 days later. Shortly after that they closed it based on my 2 late payments. I came back to Citicards and began using the card. As I normally do with all of my cards, I pay on time and have a zero balance at the end of each month. In July I paid my bill on time and on the day it was due as per their policy. I received an email stating that my payment was received. Fast forward to the middle of September I got a curious call from Citicards that statied it was not a sales call. Assuming my balance was zero I thought it may be some fraud alert. I had not used the card since July so I knew there was no way I was making charges. I went on line and discovered that two days after I paid my balance Citicards had issued a .64 cent charge as a administration cost. Two days later they began applying late fees. This went on until the phone call so the charges were up over $70 and my card was suspended. I next contacted Citicards to find out what the problem was. I was informed that since the cut off time for payments was 5pm and that the transfer which was done through their system was not posted until approx 5:20pm my payment therefore was late. I received no notice other than statements from Citicards that there was a problem until I got the call last week. Assuming that my balance was zero since I had a confirmation of payment and the fact that I did not use my card after that date I did not even bother to read them. That was my only mistake. Next I was told that they would remove the charges since it was so close and return my balance to zero. I was told that the action would take 2 business days. That was on Sunday. I checked my card on Tuesday and the balance was .10 cents. I called back to ask why and was then told it would be correctd in two business days. Thursday I called back and the error was still not corrected. I again called today Monday and was again told it was now done and it would of course take two more business days. If it is not corrected by Wednesday I am going to pay the .10 cents and cancel my card. My biggest complaint is that they did not send me email notification that my account was over due and that I needed to contact them to fix the issue before they stopped my card. Had they take this measure instead of sending me generic statements the matter would have been resolved before getting to this. Charging someon .64 cents so they can apply late charges is also wrong and I wonder how many people fall for this and pay. I will now opt out of paperless statements since I always open my snail mail and often disregard some emails. Once this issue is resolved I will have to take a good look and see if I want to continue with them. My credit and good name are very important to me. So much so that I never keep a credit card balance of any kind and pay my bills on time.

Your account was reviewed by a credit scoring system that assigned a numerical value to various items on your credit report. The information did not score a sufficient number of points to keep your account open."

Not having been delinquent, no collections filed against us, same line of balances I have carried over the last few years, it was a little strange that it was cancelled. Now, I am running across the same complaint on a number of websites such as this, involving the same card. Perhaps this is Citibank's way of getting out of this 0% interest card. Customer service said it's a different department and transferred me there. I spoke to somebody in that department and found out that they're charging me since May ’09. I asked them who authorized these charges and they said they’re going to investigate and will let me know within 30 days.

I never authorized them or bought that service from them. So, to me they just put that on my account without my permission and thought I’ll never check that. I pay my bill online so that's why I never check my statement. Luckily this month, I went to pay my bill in the Citibank branch, that's when I noticed it. So, now I’m paying interest from my pocket for these charges and they’re going to take 30 days for investigation. I need to file a lawsuit against them. Can your firm do anything about it?

Because of a late payment, Citibank raised the interest rate on my card to 29.99%. I believe I am a victim of unfair and unethical business practices and would appreciate your assistance. I opened a modest credit card account and transferred a card balance to Citibank because of their low interest rate. They then raised my limit (not requested or approved), although I did eventually need the additional funds to get me through a very tight financial situation. When I realized how high the interest had become, I called CitiCard and was assured the rate would be lowered. It was very temporarily. It was right after that I was one day late for a payment and they raised my interest rate again and charged huge late fees.

I am now in an impossible situation. They charge a late fee every month and continue charging the outrageous interest rate. I receive calls all times of the day and am asked to make ridiculous credit arrangements. I have asked them to stop the calls and offer fair arrangements. I, too, believe Citi targeted me by offering a 0% card, expecting a balance transfer, then switching the due date and not living up to their promises of lowering the rate. On August 14, 2009, I called Citi Cards to ask if I could push a payment date back a few days to August 21. The reason: I had just spent 6 days in the hospital with a blood clot in my lung and I was trying to get all my finances in order. I was told that a payment on the 21st would be okay;however, it would break my payment agreement. I had no choice because I simply did not have the money, so I agreed. I was told I would have to call the payment in by phone. Usually, the money is taken out automatically. No problem, I told them. On August 18, my check card was declined at a convenience store. When I got home, my checking account had me being $498 in the red. My statement said I had $400 taken out by Citi Cards on August 17. Since I had no reason to think it would be taken out, I bought gas, food, etc.

I live check to check. I also have major medical bills right now. When the $400 was taken out of my account without my authorization and after Citi Cards told me it would not take the money out, it threw my account several hundred dollars into the red. The number still isn't final, but right now, I'm at minus $750. Again, I live check to check. I need that money, for food, for gas to get to work and also, for medical expenses to keep me alive. The blood clot was serious enough that I could have died. I have to see three doctors. I now have no money for any of that. What if I die because I have no money? Thanks to Citi Cards. This actually could happen.

I called Citi Cards, and it admitted the error. The people I spoke to were polite. They said, when I go to the bank tomorrow (August 19), to call them and they will straighten things out. That's great. But the problem is, in order to get that $400 back, my $400, I have to go through hoops. I have to fax them a copy of my bank statement. Why do they need that? They already know they took my money, it says so in their own records. The second problem is this: it will be days before I get that money back. When they wanted the money, they went in and took it straight out of my account. When I want the money back, my money, and the money they were not even authorized to take, I have to wait for them to approve it, and then they will put a check in the mail.

In the meantime, without the $400, even if all my overdraft charges are wiped out (and that's not a gimme with Bank of America), I'll still be in the red. I won't have money for food. I won't have money to put gas in my car. I work an hour from home. I won't have money to see the doctor. This is kind of a problem. And it's simply unacceptable. I’m so stressed right now, I’m having a hard time breathing. Three weeks ago, I was in a hospital room for 6 days. Now, I almost feel as bad. One little mistake has thrown my life into disarray. And Citi Cards doesn’t really seem overly concerned.

Then they offered to "review my account" and, if I passed (what are the odds I wouldn't), they would not increase the rate and refund 10% of the interest paid if I made 8 payments on time. Sounds just like what I asked for in the first place with a bonus, doesn't it? Being very suspicious, I started researching complaints about Citi and found this same scenario. Apparently, you have a good chance of getting another interest increase notice just before they have to pay the rebate. Of course, you can opt out and forfeit.

The bill was paid. Apparently, there was an across-the-board increase in March, which raised our rate to 17%. The card was not used. We just received another rate increase, which is now 25.24%! We immediately called Citi and were grandfathered in to the 17% March rate due to our past business with Sears. As we consider our credit rating excellent, we cannot close this account without damaging our credit, so we must leave it open at an exorbitant rate.

Citi told us that it was illegal for them to discriminate on interest rates no matter how our bills were paid. We refused to ever use this card again, and fortunately, we have the current means to pay. With gloomy economic prospects, however, this may not last. The pamphlet stated, "This change is being made as a result of a combination of the economic environment and your account revolving balance and recent payments." Approximately 2 months ago, I was 1-2 days late on a payment for my credit card (which I opened only because I was offered a 0% rate for one year for transferring a balance) because the due date changed by a few days. I immediately paid the amount due and called customer service to ask if it would impact my 0% rate. I was informed that it could, but most likely wouldn't since I paid immediately and called right away. But they said they wouldn't know for sure until the next statement closed - after which I should call back. I called back a few weeks later when the statement closed (and interest rate raised to 29.99%) and the customer service rep that I talked to said it wouldn't be a problem and that she would put it in for the rate to be dropped back to 0% and the finance charges for the past two billing cycles would be credited to my account. She asked that I call back in a few days to make sure it went through.

Today, I called back and learned that it had been denied and was told they wouldn't look at it any further. I immediately closed the account and I plan to pay off the balance ASAP and refinance my mortgage with another company (it is also with Citi). I believe Citi targeted me (and probably others) by offering a 0% card, expecting a balance transfer, then switching the due date and not living up to their promises of readjusting the rate. Citi will make a substantial amount of money off of my finance charges (at 29.99%). I would hope that this type of lending practice is illegal. If it not, I would like to highly encourage government agencies (specifically Congress) to pass laws and regulations to stop credit card issuers from this type of predatory lending and inform anyone on this site who is thinking about getting a Citi card to think twice!

I called customer service to ask why my rate is 19.99% when I see they advertise the APR at 14.24%. To my surprise, they say they could not offer me the 14.24% rate, even though they agree my credit standing is excellent. The best they can do is offer me a 17.99% rate. I then spoke to a supervisor and she said the same thing. I could either take the 17.99% rate or keep it at 19.99%. Obviously, I took the lower rate. I am seriously thinking about cancelling this card in lieu of this deception. Is there anything that can be done to have them see the error of their way? I mean they advertise one thing and then deliver another. Is this the way to treat a great customer?

I recently received my Citicard statement and was stunned to see that my July payment had been received two days late, my interest rate had jumped to 25.99% and I was charged a late fee. I pay my bills online and had posted a payment of $233 on July 1st. My due date was July 8th; however, the turnaround on my bill pay is 2-3 business days and I felt confident that I was in that window. My minimum payment has now increased from $233 to $532.11. I am a teacher, a single mother, and have been an excellent customer for years. I was never late, even once. I have spoken to several account managers, hung up on twice, and sent a letters of complaint and then receive a form letter implying that I deserve this treatment.

I realize that I am among many angry middle class citizens who work hard, pay taxes (that went to Citibank's insane bailout money and their record profits), save for their children's education, pay their own health insurance, and live within their means. I have neighbors who stopped paying and now Citibank is decreasing their balances by as much as 75% and decreasing their interest rate to nothing. I am more than disappointed in this company and their treatment of good customers. If I am late, I will pay a late fee but to ruin my credit and force me to have to give up $300 a month (that I don't have) and to have my neighbors default and get catered to embodies everything that is wrong with this country.

Citbank and Chase - steer clear of them. I think this is more of a statement and complaint about service that should not be! It’s just is not right. Let’s start with the first company Citibank. They decided to lower my limit right after I made a $2,000.00 payment so I would be able to use it on vacation. What a surprise when I went to use it and they had actually lowered it to a point that I was over my limit. When they were called, they told me that I had some stuff on my credit report that justified the decrease. I had always made my payments on time and more than the minimum amount I found out someone else had filed bankruptcy and they, not me, had screwed up the my wife’s SSI number and I had that fixed before we left. I was told that timely payments were not the way they justified raises or the way they did business. I closed the account, paid it in full that is the way I do business.

The second one was another letter that I got today stating that Chase, the company that just bought Washington Mutual my Visa Card found that I was in a high risk category. Yet another one, I always paid on time and more than the monthly payment. I am employed full time and have not missed any payments yet one of their reasons was that I had not upheld other monthly card agreements for payments and my credit history was less that 24 months. I have had this card for years, like 9, and 3 company buy-outs, this is just is just **. Yet another one, I have just paid in full and closed, so apparently my risk was not all that justified. The woman I spoke with was rude and hung up before I could say anything after she asked me if there was anything else she could do for me?

I may also add that while talking to her the whole time I was calm and did not raise my voice, was not rude after I heard their reasoning. I just stated that I would like to know what the balance was to pay it off and to close it. Then I was told she could not do that, she could close the account now and that I would still get statements for the charges on the card. Consequence: None, I think they are just messing with their pay checks it has actually saved me money and in the future made Alaska Air more money.

I set up the payment date, but it disappeared from the scheduled payment site before the pay date. They charged me a finance fee and late fee. I swallowed first time. Then a month later, it happened to my Citi Shell card. Again they charged all the fees. I am 150% sure that I set up the date and recorded the payment date and can't believe it disappeared. I have many other credit cards with other companies, but had never had payment scheduling issues. I strongly believe Citicard company purposely removed my scheduled date and try to make more money from the consumer like me. It is very unethical and probably illegal. I start to set up my alert system. Next time I will have my confirmation # to prove.

I have called since to see about getting it lowered and was told it was increased due to late payments. I knew I haven't had any late payments, so I asked when these late payments were and was put on hold. She came back and said it's due to late payments, but she never did tell me when these late payments were and the line was disconnected. The same thing happened when I called back again. I have had these cards for about three years, and to the best of my ability, I have maintained a decent record with them. After talking with them, it did not make a difference; and their justification is the state of the economy.

How many billions did they receive recently from us, taxpayers? I certainly cannot afford the increase nor should I have to pay it. I will have to take the route of declining the new rate, have my accounts closed, and suffer the consequences to my credit rating at no fault of my own. Isn't it about time that someone steps in and do something about it? The fed's bailed them out. Why did the new laws not take effect immediately? In my case, they have posted an "Account Alert" stating "This account has been converted to a new number or was closed at your request." This is entirely false but according to an account manager I spoke with today, they reported it this way to the credit bureau to "avoid a negative impact to my credit if it stated closed by bank." So, once again, Citi Cards is screwing consumers at will. I care less the line of credit is discontinued but care deeply that Citi Cards has the ability to negatively affect my credit rating in any way putting my hard earned credit worthiness at risk. Both reports, bank closed or consumer closed, have a negative impact. Consumer closed is a false statement. I don't recall agreeing to give Citi Cards rights to affect my credit rating due to their inability to provide credit. Citi card is, at will, tampering with my credit rating. No matter how they report it, it puts my credit rating at risk of lowering and having a domino effect on my credit worthiness. I haven't established and maintained good credit so Citi Cards or any other credit can, at will, put it at risk or ruin it.

I got married in 2006 and called to change my name and was duped into their Credit Protector program. It is insurance to make your payments if you lose your job or are disabled. My husband was laid off in January '09 and I in June '09. We used savings and sold things to make payments, but I finally called in mid-June to activate our insurance. I spoke with a lady who told me I could not activate the insurance on my husband because he was not listed on the account.

I told her that was not possible, as I added him when I changed my name in '06. She then said, I would have to show he was the main income provider by filling out some forms, but that I should call back July 3rd and activate the insurance under my name because I would be laid off for 30 days and we could do it over the phone without forms. I asked her what if I was recalled in the fall at my job and she said "no problem, at that time we could switch it to my husband." Like a fool, I said okay. I called back on July 3rd and this time I got a guy. He told me I could not activate the insurance under my name because I am not on unemployment (I work in an elementary school and do not qualify until fall) and I could not activate under my husband because it was past 180 from "the event."

Here's the kicker: if the first lady had just sent me the forms for my husband, it was within the 180 days! So here I have insurance I have been billed for to the tune of $577.76 and it is completely worthless! In my opinion, Citibank stole $577.76 from us! But the school has recalled me for fall so I get to pay their bailout with my taxes! They are killing the American family with their rip-offs. It is depressing to have to sell your kids' Christmas and birthday presents to buy food. They need to be sued out of existence! I just want my $577.76 back so I have that much less to pay these crooks off and never, ever do business with them again. I contacted the MN Attorney General's office and am hoping.

I have had a CitiCard credit card for a few years now. I got it to help repair my credit by making timely payments and keeping it paid off. Well, of course, the 'keeping it paid off' lasted until we had a financial crisis in the form of a major cut in hours at work. So--to continue with my complaints--I have always been able to make my payments on time, even made larger than minimum payments. Which was at times very difficult, because the due date was constantly being changed (sometimes it was around the 20th and sometimes it was around the 10th) with the added problem of any charges made on the card were not always on the current statement like they should have been.

Sometimes the cut-off date on the statement did not jive with when a purchase had been made--in other words, the charge should have been on the current statement, according to the cut-off date on the statement. Instead, the charge was placed on the next month's statement which made the minimum balance due quite large and difficult to come up with. And, on top of all of that, an over-the-limit fee would occasionally be charged when a charge to the card was held back (usually on a small payment month) and added to the balance on a month when a large payment was due. This happened earlier this year when my husband and I used our tax refund to pay off the balance. I had checked the statement to make sure that all of the recent charges (based on retained sales slips) were accounted for.

The next month, a statement was received with finance charges! So, I paid that too. The month after that, we got charged a late payment fee (the payment had been sent on time and should have been credited to our account) which of course kicked our interest rate through the roof. Then, instead of cutting up the card like I should have, we used it while visiting our daughter in Illinois--now of course we are stuck. Then, out of the blue we get new cards from them. When I called to query this, as there was a year on the expiration date yet, I was told by a gentleman with a very thick accent (very hard to understand) that our account was in jeopardy and we were to switch to the new cards. So, I got it changed to the new cards---but, I have no intention of using them.

We are going to pay them off and have a burning party to rid ourselves of this plastic menace. It is a shame that in our society today that cash isn't as good at businesses as a plastic credit card. Shucks, even to make a reservation at a motel---or even just to walk into a motel to get a room (with cash in hand) the clerk insists on a credit card.

I made a web payment of $57 at the time. The system took 5 days to process a payment. By the time the payment was processed, the bank account no longer had the funds available. So their system tried the same transaction twice. So all in all, I received fees from my bank account totaling $60.00 for returned fees. Then a $39 fee from CitiCards, then a $39 over credit fee. On top of this, when I tried to contact customer service by email, their website comes up with "This feature is not available to this account". When I try to make a payment online again, it no longer allows me to do so. So I called them.

I got a lady who barely speaks English and barely knows what she is doing. She takes at least a minute to say anything. I told her I want to make a payment. I said, "I want to pay $150". She told me, "can you make $153 payment? This will cover the $40 over credit limit, $57 amount due immediately and the $50 monthly fee". What? When did you decide that I have to pay a monthly fee? Yeah, I don't. If I have to pay that, I'm getting a lawyer. But I'm like fine, it's only 3 more than what I was going to pay. Now, she tells me I can't make a payment through my checking account because it had a return payment fee. She said, "maybe we should try debit card". Whatever, so that didn't work. She put me on hold for several minutes and switched me to a "specialist". At least this lady can speak English, but she has no manners and apparently is using a mic that is way too far away from her face.

I was talking to her and apparently, the other lady did not brief her on anything that was discussed over the past 30 minutes. So she told me again, "we cannot process your payment over the phone". So I can't make a payment over the phone or online. They told me that I need to try Western Union or money order. I told them that is not possible. Why would I go pay someone else in order to make a payment to you? After several minutes, they talked to a supervisor and processed a payment to my account for $57. I don't know why they didn't do the amount I was trying to pay, which was $150. But, whatever. I recommend all CitiCard customers pay off and close their accounts immediately. I opened a Gordon’s account with Citibank to pay for my ring in June 2008. At the time, I was 18 years old. Therefore, my credit was very new. I received a $300 credit limit. I used the $300 credit and paid it off in 3 months. Then I went back to trade in my ring and they gave me more credit. I received $750 credit limit around December 2008. I was never late on any payments and actually I always overpaid by $50 on each payment.

Then in March 2009, I received a letter from Citibank stating that they are closing my account after a review of my credit report. They stated that I have a short credit history and that I have too many new accounts. This surprised me so much because they knew this when I opened the account with them the first time. Of course, my credit history is short.

I am only 19 years old now and, of course, all of my accounts are fairly new because I just applied for credit only a year ago. This really makes me mad because I pay all of my bills on time and I was just trying to build my credit. Now, with a closed account on my credit report, my credit score is totally damaged. I hate CitiCard. They only try to save their company and don't care about their customers.

I was sent a settlement statement for my Citibank account, because I had fallen behind on payment. I called and made the agreement on 10/08/08. My outstanding balance was $1961.88. They reduced it to $843.61 as a settlement offer. It was agreed I pay $100 on that day; the next payment was $67.61, and $67.60 thereafter. I even made payments for more than the amount I needed to--on February, $100; March, $70; April, $70.

The last time I called was in May to pay my next payment. I asked the girl what the current amount was. She told me that after making my May payment, my amount would be $300.81. I told her I was going to make the regular payment and that I would pay off the rest the balance next month. I had always used my debit card to make my payments with no problems. The girl said that she couldn't do it, because her system wouldn't let her. She said she could take a check over the phone. So that is what we did.

Then at the end of May, I got a letter in the mail from a collection agency for the Citibank account. I had only owed $300.81 more on the account for Citibank. But collections wants $1500. I called Citibank, and they told me they no longer have any information on my account, because it had been sent to collections. I checked my bank statement when I got it on 06/05, and the check that I gave them the numbers for was not there. Somebody screwed up and didn't put it through. Now, I owe even more than when this all began, because somebody didn't follow through.

I can provide proof that I paid Citibank faithfully every month and a lot of them more than the agreement of the $67.60. I can also show that my bank statements skipped over the check number I gave them. But because their system voids all accounts that are sent to collection, they couldn't check to see when my account was last accessed, which could prove that I did call. I now have a bill for $1500+ interest and late fees rather than the $300 I had left to pay. And it's all because somebody at Citibank messed up and didn't do their part.

I agreed, stating I had not received my bill, but I would go ahead and pay it off and asked if he could send me confirmation via mail that I had paid off and closed the account. He agreed and said he needed my address, which I gave. I never received anything by mail. I cut up my card.

On May 25th, 2009, I received a call from Jina at Citi who informed me I owed $261.65. I thought I had paid it off, but I had apparently only paid off the late fee. I asked her to send me my statements in the mail, and she verified my address. On May 30th, 2009, Jennifer called informing me of my past due account. She then saw that the post office had returned my statements, posting "undeliverable" and that it wasn't Citi's fault that I had never received a statement.

I asked to speak to a superior and she put me in touch with Sam who offered to email me my account within 24-48 hours. I had never registered to pay online and was unable to do it before now because I had cut up my card, which had the card number (and never had a statement). Sam waived the requirement, but I never received an email after 48 hours. On June 3, 2009, a representative called me to get a payment again, stating I would rack up another $39 in late fees on June 11, 2009 unless I paid. I paid off the total amount (as far as I know). This constitutes ridiculously poor business practices and has resulted to hundreds of dollars in late fees and unknown past due statements.

It seems that just about every month or so, they change the due date, which is probably so they can try to add late charges. I have always been on time and even paid off my balance whenever I can, so they don't really make extra money off me. When I disputed the added charges, they began sending me more letters and calling my home 2-3 times a day. On one occasion, they had Bank of America try to chase me down by calling me at work. Now I screen all calls at home and at work. These people are ruthless! I have no idea what else can be done--even my state's attorney general has told me there's nothing else they can do. However, the only PMT that posted was the one that was late. My interest rate went from 6.99% to 25.99%. I am charged a late fee and finance charges that are higher than my payment was. I called and of course they could only verify that there was no problem with their system on May 15 and that there was nothing they could do about it unless I made payments on time for a year, then they could lower my rate. I have been a valued client for twenty years and because I missed a payment (totally by computer error) and asked for a credit on a late payment fee, they raised my interest rate in one month from 6.99% to 25%. Normally, you can have a discussion with customer service and they used to readjust the rate. Not anymore! The new economy is all about what can we get. My recommendation would be: If you are a CitiCard customer, shop, compare, get another card, but do not believe that they really care about a valued customer. I suggest change to a smaller bank.

It's a shame what most financial services companies have done to their integrity. The sad part is that they can live with it and our government does nothing about it. I know we all need some level of credit but as soon as we can America, let's pay off our debts, pay cash and let's see what happens! By the way, it's not the customer service reps, it is the executives who make the decisions who need to be blamed. At least with loan sharks, you know upfront what's going to happen.

Now, I made an electronic payment on April 1st for the April installment payment, and once I felt that was credited, I [apparently foolishly] made a second payment in April for the May installment payment. NOW THEY HAVE ADDED A $2.00 FINANCE CHARGE AT 307.69% INTEREST!!!! THIS COMPANY IS RUINING MY CREDIT RATING BECAUSE OF THEIR ACCOUNTING PRACTICES. I faxed the information to them and requested verification that the payments were received and credited properly and also asked for verification that they late payment had been rescinded. When over a week had passed and I had not heard from them, I contacted them and wound up speaking with a customer service supervisor who informed me that since the May payment was made before the beginning of the next billing cycle, it was credited to the previous month. And this was the reason they assessed a $39.00 late fee. I asked her to clarify what the billing cycle for my account was and stated that if it begins on the second of one month it must end on the first of the following month but she said that was not the case. As I look at my statements, I see that the number of days in a billing cycle does change from month to month. Illogical, but what I think we have all come to expect from this company. When I asked the name and title, as well as the address of the complaint department, she provideded me with that information.

I have never seen a company call a ONE DAY LATE payment a DEFAULT!! This has raised my minimum payment from under $200 per month to close to $400 per month, just in interest. My payment even shows that I authorized on the 13th and they do not care. Is this even legal??? So, Citibank got a federal bailout. May be now they will pass on some relief to those consumers who have been excellent customers but may be in difficulty in the current economic crisis – right? Wrong! In fact, Citibank has resorted back to the practice of using every fine print technique to charge exorbitant interest rates.
I have been an excellent customer with Citibank card for over 12 years. A few months ago, I lost my job and fell behind payment by a month. How does Citibank help me? It increased my interest rate without any warning from approximately 11% to 29%? Is that supposed to be a help? When I called the customer service department expressing my concern, Ms. Debbie (the supervisor – 866.905.2784) literally just laughed! – Just as you will imagine LOL! Over years, Citibank has aggressively marketed its credit cards making enticing offers. Once a customer signs up, it has used numerous tricks to begin charging exorbitant rates and fees. So, I began checking definition and history of loan sharking. Here is the summary: Wikipedia defines loan shark as a person or body that offers unsecured loans at high interest rates to individuals, often backed by blackmail. Over last few years, Citbank Card Services has aggressively marketed its cards with attractive low interest rates. Once target person signs, Citibank has used various tricks hidden in the fine print to charge exhorbitant interest rates and fees. When the customer finds it difficult to pay the exhobitant amounts charged, Citibank has used the threat of reporting to the credit bureaus to blackmail the customers. While availability of subprime lending products has made traditional loan sharks rarer, companies like Citibank do appear to behave in an exploitative and loan shark manner. I believe consumers need to understand this and evaluate the card companies historical behavior prior to signing up. By way of this email, I am also requesting Citibank executives to investigate and put in place genuine programs to help consumers – after all, they saved you with their tax money. Currently, on discovering that a customer needs help, Citibank increases the rates further thereby making it more difficult to pay! Satish P.S. This matter will also be reported to appropriate political entities and federal agencies.
