I took money from an ATM, but the ATM shut down stating that they were out of money. I contacted the bank where the ATM was and they said I had to work it out with Green Dot. I contacted Green Dot and they said I have to wait 10 days for the bank to give them the correct information. Only then can I dispute the $400 error, which will then take another 10-14 days, to get my money back in my account.
This is my money not theirs. Most of the people I talk to are in another country and have no customer service skills.

I tried to use my Turbo Tax Prepaid Visa at a gas pump. The card was declined twice so I paid cash and checked my balance the next day when I got home. There was a transaction for the same day from the gas pump equaling exactly what I had in my account, taking my account to zero. The dispute policies state that you have only two days to notify them of a dispute, and that you have to call them directly.
The number is the same that is listed on the back of the card. I have called a half dozen times a day for the last three days and after being on hold from anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes, the system says it is too busy and to call back later. It then disconnects the call. I've tried finding other numbers, and I've tried using other options in the automated system; nothing works. I do not see myself ever getting my money back at this point.

On February 3rd, 2012, I paid a bill with one of my vendors. My vendor processed my payment with their PayPal merchant account online. The vendor entered my billing address for my Green Dot MasterCard incorrectly. My vendor's online PayPal merchant account denied the transactions entered with the incorrect billing address. Finally when my vendor entered the correct billing address for my Green Dot MasterCard the transaction was approved with a confirmation number to prove it. After that fiasco, something told me to check my Green Dot MasterCard balance online. when I looked, I discovered that my Green Dot MasterCard account had a total of 4 $324 pending transactions, debited from my account.
I immediately contacted my vendor and Greendot MasterCard to make them both aware of my missing funds. This is where the fun begins. Green Dot MasterCard tells me to have my merchant fax them over a statement of release form (SOR) on my merchant's company letterhead. Not only did they want me to do that for them, they also told me to have my merchant include, my "footprint ticket number", my MasterCard number, my phone number, the dolor amount(s), and a signature. Wow.. really. Well today, is February 10th, 2012, 1 week later and the 1 bill I paid to my vendor of $324 has cleared my Green Dot MasterCard account days ago, and so has every legitimate charge on my account up to this point. However I still have 3 transactions of $324 pending on my Green Dot MasterCard account from Feb 3rd, 2012.
Well, earlier today I called Green Dot MasterCard again and they informed me that my merchant faxed over the requested statement of release (SOR), however it was missing the required information required by Green Dot MasterCard. Green Dot MasterCard promised me that once they receive the statement of release they would release my money in 2 business days. Well, look at the calender folks. After all this drama, I come to find out that my money should be released back into my account on February 14th, 2012. Question is why does Green Dot MasterCard think that it is okay to hold my hard earned money hostage. All I have to say is that I pray that my money appears on my Green Dot MasterCard at 12:01 am Arizona time Tuesday, February 14th, 2012 or I am contacting the president of the united states to have them shut down.

Somehow someone put a $200 money PAC on my Green Dot card. I don’t know who or how they did this but Green Dot has put a block on my card. Now I have late charges on unpaid bills. It’s been about 2 weeks now and Green Dot keeps giving me the run around. Green Dot said an investigator would call me and they did. I explained and now Green Dot says the investigator will call me again. Why, I already talked to them! Nothing is happening.

I’m trying to register my card. I spent 25 minutes waiting to talk to someone. When I finally talked to someone, they wanted my social # and I said I was not going to give it to them. She said they can't register my card without it. I ask for phone # I could call to complain. She said the social # was optional?! I told her I wanted to talk to a supervisor and they put me on hold for another 15 minutes. I have been a Visa customer with a debit card and a Visa credit card and if it wouldn't hurt my credit, I would cancel both.

I was scammed by emporiumcloseout.com out of a purchase for a new toolbox. I paid for the tool box with a Green Dot MoneyPak. After getting an email confirmation that my order was received and processing, a week went by. Then, it turns out this company has disappeared: website is offline, phone disconnected, emails are bouncing back. So I contact Green Dot to dispute the transaction. Green Dot Corp. stated they knew where the funds went. They have some person’s name, address, contact information and won’t release it without a subpoena. The card where my MoneyPak was loaded has no money in it, and they (Green Dot) won’t refund me my money. Green Dot is protecting the guilty and making it near impossible for the victim to resolve a loss. I am hoping to get the attention of a class action lawyer to take action against Green Dot Corporation.

I suggest for people not to purchase Green Dot prepaid cards. Twice I’ve had purchases made in a three week period of amounts of $20.00 that I did not make. I don’t care for having to pay for someone else’s desires. To get a response from someone is impossible. The outcome of it all is that someone is spending my hard earned money and I don’t get reimbursed. I’m a very dissatisfied customer.

My daughter went to the Walgreens on Panola Road in Atlanta, GA on 12/30/11, and purchased two Greendot cards, because it was told to her that the limit is $500 per day. So she purchased one for $500.00, and one for $100.00, and paid the $4.95 for each re-loadable card purchased. After purchasing the cards, she texted me the number that she scratched off the back of the card for $500.00. I called it in, and it kept saying invalid card number, so I called my daughter back to make sure she sent the right number, and she said she did, so I tried again. It was still invalid.
I then spoke to a customer service rep, and they told me that my funds were put on someone else's card. I asked how that is possible, when the card was just scratched off, and no one else had access to the card number, so I would like the funds to be placed on my card, like they are supposed to be. After talking to them for a good while, I called my daughter back, and informed her to go back to the store where it was purchased, and ask for a refund, because the card sold at their store was no good. She was told that they don't give refunds, and they called Greendot to question the card sold.
I have come to find out that, not only was the $500 card money was stolen and placed on someone else's card, but the $100 that wasn't supposed to be uploaded until the next day, because of the $500 a day rule, was gone, and placed on the same card. I was then told that the money will be on hold, until they investigated what happened, within 24 hours to be exact, and a supervisor will contact me. A couple of days went by, and no phone call. 3 days later, a call was made to my daughter telling her that the case was closed, because the funds have been used by the person that they placed my money on. I then made a call back to the Greendot company, to tell them the case is not to be closed, until the money is refunded to the right person, and I was told by the rep that I need to file a police report, and they will subpoena the records, and press charges against them, and I asked them why am I the one going after them, and it is their company that has the fault. They need to go after them, not me.
This is unacceptable, because for one, I don't have $610.95 to just give to someone else for their pleasure. I am the victim here, and I am very angered that that they are getting away with taking people's money. I have 4 kids and bills to pay, and I will talk to whoever. I have to make sure I get justice, not only for myself, but the thousands of others that have been through it. Believe me, it is not over. I will report them to the BBB, and encourage any and everyone to contact them with your complaint. I am willing to talk to a lawyer. If anyone is willing to take my case, please call the number provided, because as of yet, I have not been rewarded my money, and it is now 4 days later.

Sounds like hush money to me. I wonder what the FTC will say about this. I was told I will receive a refund by Wednesday, December 7! I’ll be waiting for it. From the complaints that I've seen on here, most of you did not read the rules and instructions, before you bought the card. They do work, and you are not exempt. The Patriot Act requires that US debit card companies get, and confirm, the SSNs of the people requesting a card. If you don't give this information, you don't get a card. Plain and simple.
If you buy a MoneyPak at a store, make sure that don't use an actual credit card to do so. That is not allowed. You will be able to use a debit card as long as you use it a debit card, not a credit card and save the receipt. It has your activation number on it. If you lose it, someone else may be able to activate the refill, or card, and you will lose that money. There are no refunds for cards, or refills. Realistically, there can't be.
The best way to do this is to go to **. Sign up for either a Mastercard or Visa debit card. Fill out everything. You can no longer us a PO Box as an address. It has to be a physical address. You must supply your SSN, and other identifying info. You are not an exception. It's the law.
Once you have requested and been approved of a debit card, you will be given a card number and expiration date. Then you will access your account and set up the pin number, and other things. Once you have set up the account, and have been approved, you will receive your card. Usually within 2 weeks. If there is anything wrong with your card, when you receive it, let them know immediately!
I have had problems with Green Dot twice, in all the years that I have used them. Once, a direct deposit was shown on one card, but not on the other one. That was a panic time! I called, as well as a few thousand other people, and in another two hours it was fixed. The other problem was that I had my name changed, legally, and sent a fax with all three of my card's info, a request for them to issue new ones in my new name, a copy of my photo ID, and a copy of my court order changing my name.
Green Dot changed my name, and issued new cards, for the 1st and 3rd card, but not for the 2nd one. I had to send a fax with just the 1 card info, and all of the other information. I received a new card.

I wanted to make some purchases online, so I went and purchased a Greendot card. I spent 4.95 to activate it and put 100.00 on it. I get home and go online to set it up. I put in all my info and the card's info. I hit enter and get a message saying that they weren't satisfied with my information so I was being issued a refund check. For an hour I tried various numbers trying to get to a real person. I figured out how to do it. Hit the option for a refund and everytime it asks you for your card number, just enter zero's after doing this three times you are transferred to a person.
When I asked why my information was rejected, he said because I entered a dead person's social security number? Um I'm pretty sure that I know my information, I've been using it for several years now so I have no clue why it wouldn't work to set up a greendot card when my same social security number has been used to set up my cell phone and bank account and everything else. Today, I called Green Dot. Let me first state that I got the card when I got my 2010 federal taxes back; it is a Turbo Tax Visa. I have used it for direct deposit and for PayPal transfers. Well, this time, I was transferring $650 from PayPal to this Visa card. I tried once on October 30th, and the transfer was refused. My PayPal account stated, "Computer error," and the money was returned. So, I tried it again on 11/2, and now today, PayPal states that the transfer was complete but there is no money on the Green Dot Turbo Tax card.
So, I called and spent over an hour on the phone, only to be told that it was PayPal that would allow the transfer because they set a $500 limit per transaction. After a very heated call, I told Patrick to cancel my call and shove it up his ** and hung up. I calmed down and called PayPal and they told me the reason why the first transaction was refused was that, get this, "I refused the transfer". When I asked about the $500 limit, I was told that it wasn't PayPal and I have no limit on my account. I attempted to call Green Dot back but since they canceled my card, I can't get through. So now, I have $650 in limbo that PayPal says was transferred to the Visa card and that Green Dot states they refused it at 9 to 10 am this morning. FYI, these calls took place between 6 to 8 pm.

Okay, so I am having a problem with Green Dot Corporation (greendot.com), a prepaid debit card. I called Green Dot and was not able to resolve my problem, so I took my complaint to the BBB and of course, nothing happened there except that they kind of admit they did wrong. They offered me $25, but they actually owed me $75. I will explain it shortly. So I went to CLS (Community Legal Services) and VLP (Volunteer Lawyers Program), and after several months went by, I had to go into their office to see what was going on with my case as no one had even bothered to contact me as promised.
Patricia ** (VLP) informed me that they are having a hard time finding anyone to take the case as $75 is not worth fighting for. I am on disability and I only get $764, $500 out of that is my rent so $75? That's a lot! So a month later (August), I got a letter from Patricia ** telling me that they don't see a case suitable for litigation and my case was closed. Okay, so what happened to me trying to get all of this help? As I mentioned, I am on disability, I have my checks directly deposited to a prepaid visa card (Green Dot visa). Well, everything was fine. I was living at the YMCA when I opened that account. I moved to Campaige Place Apartments in January 2011 (across from CLS and VLP) on Second Ave. and Jackson.
Three months later (March), I called Green Dot to check my balance. I had to talk to a customer service. They told me that my account was closed due to sharing of my personal information. I asked them how is that? They said I was sharing my address and phone number with at least 10 other people who have the same kind of visa card; I, of course, never have! They sent my money back to Social Security, it took them over three weeks to get that money back so they could repay me. In that time, I was late paying my rent, was given an eviction notice (goes on credit rating). Campaige Place ** opened in April 2003. I am the second person to live at the above address, okay? For a reason that my debit prepaid card was canceled, Green Dot (Cara ** I talked to on the phone) stated this, "you are sharing your personal information because 10 people at your address have a Green Dot prepaid card".
Hello? Are you not seeing this? 10 people at my address? So I filed a BBB complaint. This was what Green Dot Corp had to say in response to my BBB complaint. "On February 14, 2011, Green Dot blocked Mr. **'s card due to an excessive number of cards being associated with the same or similar personal information. On February 28, 2011, Green Dot closed Mr. *'s card. On March 1, 2011, Mr. **'s contacted Green Dot to inquire about the closure of his card. Mr. ** was informed that his card was associated with an excessive number of cards sharing the same or similar personal information. The Green Dot representative advised Mr. ** that any direct deposits would be returned to the sender. A corporate escalations specialist has reviewed Mr. **'s issue and Green Dot will allow Mr. ** to open a new card using his complete address and cell phone number. Green Dot will issue Mr. ** a $25.00 credit once a new card is opened for the inconvenience."
Okay, so I provided them with my correct address and phone number from the get-go! My address is not **. My address is **. My phone number is not, **. My phone number is **. Is Green Dot Corp. so special that they don't recognize individual apartments in an apartment complex as one household? I know the federal, state and local governments do! Who doesn't, right? So that means they are discriminating against me because I live in an apartment complex. Can no one see how wrong that is? Can no one see how wrong it is to cause me $75 in rental late fees? Can no one see how wrong it is that because of Green Dot's discriminatory actions, not only did I have to pay $75, but I was also handed an eviction (5 days) notice that went on my credit rating thereby damaging it? Hello? I may not have an education in law, but this is plainly cut and dry. Green Dot is in the wrong, morally and legally. How legally? Green Dot knew my address and phone number, otherwise, how would Cara ** from Green Dot call me? Is there no one that can help? Are they really allowed to screw people over and get away with it? Is there really "equal justice"? So far, all I have seen is a broken legal system. I have the BBB report and two letters from VLP.

A follow-up and resolution by Green Dot on funds that was frozen/locked/lost on 10/5/2011 that I posted on 10/7/2011 here.
I have seen a lot in my life, but this one has to rank at the top of "I cannot believe they can get away with that.” On my post that appears on 10/7 of an issue with Green Dot debit card not activating with over $400 balance, this is how it finally got resolved.
On 10/10/2011, I went back to where I bought the debit card, the manager was there. We talked and he had a number for us to call, and it was "experiencing technical difficulty".
He was now upset and called himself several times and got through. He offered the merchant ID, transaction ID number and the verification number (think they call it verification) with the dollar amount. They said it did not exist. He asked if he could refund the money and Green Dot refund him and they said no. With a bewildered look on his face he said, "We are not talking about 20 or 50 bucks you guys have had it for 5 days, it is 400 bucks. This guy needs to pay bills and eat.” They said unless we faxed over the purchase receipt, the Green Dot transaction receipt, packaging and reference number, there was nothing they could do. Once they receive the fax, they will conduct an "investigation" and release the money 24 hours later.
Folks, it gets better.
After 24 hours, we called back, and "technical difficulty". Then, the continuous loop to activate the card, we tried, "invalid card". The reason the card was "invalid", they claimed "someone had strategically opened the package (some of you know how thick they are), took the card and checked the balance. (Wouldn’t you need a pin number?) I saw there was no balance and put the card back and then sealed the package perfectly.
First of all, I challenge you to look at a Green Dot debit card package and see if it is possible to even open it and then seal it back. You cannot. Second, why did they keep e-mailing me saying that they reset the card and it was ready to go if it was "locked" because someone "got it out of the package and checked the balance?”
This went on from 10/5 until I gave up on 10/9.
And the icing on the cake? On 10/11 after making 3 phone calls and finally getting a human, "For $3, we can transfer that money to a good card.” $4.95 for the original card, $3 more to get access to the funds (which we cleaned out immediately) and a $3 fee for the card being more then one month old for a total of $10.95 I paid them to "lock" my money up from 10/5 till mid-day on 10/11.
There must be some loophole in the law, but how can any of this be legal? A $4.95 fee to activate a card that was never activated (breach of contract?) and then another $3.00 to transfer it to an old card we had found, followed by another $3.00 fee for the card being over one month old. Wow. Total of $10.95, they got to "hold" my money for 6 days. Maybe I jinxed myself when I told my wife, "Maybe they will at least give us the $4.95 fee back.” Nope, they more then doubled it.
Bottom line, if you have a bill that needs to be paid, need to buy food or gas, pay cash, get a money order, but with this experience never get a Green Dot debit card. That, my friends, is about 2.5% profit they made to do nothing for 6 days. And who invented racketeering? It just got taken to a whole new level.

Last year, I got a Green Dot card and put on the card, like $50. I bought some stuff online and spent all the money and it was all good. So I had the card all these months with zero dollars on it, or so I thought. I went to put some money on it, and only 10 bucks made it onto my account. It seems that they charge $5 a month for the card even when its empty, meaning to put any money on the card I'd have to pay off like$ 40, for what seems to be absolutely, just to reload the card. If I ever meet the man behind this! ** Scam, I'm going to grab his ears and tear them off of his **head.

I tried to activate a Green Dot debit card. It came back invalid. I have the receipt from the store and from Green Dot with the money that was loaded on the card. The proprietor that sold me the card cannot refund it and Green Dot does not have a live person to talk to, just a place to submit a problem and they will get back with you in 2 business days? Today is Friday and Monday is a National Holiday, so I am supposed to be without an answer and, no less, funds until Wednesday at the earliest?
This is criminal. If I took money from someone for goods or services and disappeared without giving them the goods or services, I would either be arrested or in court. Why are they above the law and human decency? The bank associated with this should also be held accountable. There is not a live person anywhere who is willing to address the issue for at least 5 days, and I am at the mercy that they will respond to my request through the internet. Unbelievable!

I loaded my pre-paid Visa card a few times in one day and they canceled my card because of it. I never exceeded their policy limits in any way and I did not purchase anything questionable with the funds. The way the funds were loaded was through a "Money Pack", which cost $5.00 per card and there was a maximum for each load of $500.
I was buying airline tickets so I had to load multiple loads (4). I spoke with them a few times and I told them that they could see why I had to have multiple loads and what I purchased with the funds. They said that there's nothing they could do and they still canceled my card. No one ever called me to get an explanation of things. They just denied my next transaction and they only told me about the cancellation when I called to ask why.

I have been a Green Dot card user for a few months now, and have generally had an overwhelmingly positive experience with them. The only issue that I have ever had was with the Money Pak reload card I bought at a Kangaroo Station in Leesburg, FL. When I went to scratch it off, the card gouged, resulting in the destruction of the activation number needed to load my purchase onto my card. I immediately called customer service, and while it was somewhat complicated to get them to understand the problem, once they knew what was going on, they were very quick and efficient.
They asked me for some verifying information from my purchase receipt, and within only six hours, they had gotten the money back to me, along with a pleasant and sincere sounding apology call for my inconvenience. I am sorry that so many others seem to have had negative experiences with Green Dot, but perhaps, being only a recent customer, I have experienced the result of those other customer complaints such as improvements in their business practices. Whatever the case may be, I am very satisfied with the level of service I have received from them so far. The only reason I removed one star from my rating is that I dislike the use of the Money Pak cards. If I had needed that money immediately for something, I would have been in a lot of trouble. If they would allow an authentication number from the receipt to be used, thus making what happened to me impossible, I would have rated them five stars.

I bought a prepaid reloadable express Visa and added $10.00 to it. I was told to go home and call this 866 number to finish the activation. Well, after I talked to a machine, it told me to hold for a rep to finish the final steps. The rep asked for all my info, SS #, date of birth, everything they could! Then, they asked me for the card number that I just opened. Lo and behold, after all that, they then very rudely told me, "Sorry, we will not be able to activate the card because you were not approved!” I was in total disbelief. This is a reload, prepaid Visa, not credit I was applying for! I never felt so embarrassed, dissed in my life! They wouldn’t even give me an explanation other than they go through a 3rd party for verification. I never had a green dot card before! And what 3rd party? For what? This is a prepaid reloadable card!
Then, after I kept asking what seems to be the problem, the rep told me he will connect me to lost prevention. When they got on the phone, they said they couldn’t do anything because the card has already been cancelled by the previous person. And they said that they have already sent a $14.95 reimbursement out. I told the man that I just bought the card the day before and just opened it to get it activated. Then he rudely said: "Mam, there's nothing I could do. You could wait 7-14 days and see if you receive your money back. If not, give us a call!” I asked again, “How can I be turned down for a prepaid reload card?!” He then said, “Maybe your info is not adding up or you moved or something.” What?!
I felt so bad after I hung up the phone. I was treated as I was nothing over a prepaid card at that. It's not like they're giving me a dime! I was really getting it to have my pay put on it because someone told me it would be better for me. When I called my friend and told her, she thought I was lying, because how do you get turned down for a prepaid, reloadable card that you put the money on? They don't give you a dime. In fact, I would be paying them $5.0 a month just to put money on their card. Imagine how many people are giving $10.00 to a card to get it, then have to wait 14 days to get their money back, not even thinking you are going to be turned down for a prepaid, reloadable card.

Green Dot then informed me that they had left a message for the merchant. When I contacted Green Dot again (at this point I have spoken to at least six different people), I was told that I needed a letter from the merchant stating that they had told me they would refund the overcharge. I again called Green Dot and informed them that the person at the front desk of this hotel establishment is no longer employed at the hotel and I spoke to more than one person in the accounting department of the hotel who stated they would reverse the amount back to my Green Dot Visa.
The last person I spoke to at Green Dot who said his name was Jenkins was rude and hung up on me when I requested to be transferred to take the survey, which is offered to take by Green Dot at the end of your dealings with them.
I now question the integrity of this company due to the numerous people I have spoken with who either hung up on me, were rude or were not able to assist me. (Although one person at the company did side with me regarding this ongoing dilemma.)
I think the ethics of this company should be investigated regarding unfair business practices.

My husband and I operate a chemical supply company and accept MoneyPak from time to time on the customer’s request to save them money. Because we charge a 3.5% cc fee and MoneyPak cost less than $5 for the pack, so some people choose to do MoneyPak for larger orders saving them 20-30 dollars in transaction fees.
Well in June, we sold 20,000 size 4 gelatin caps to a person in Florida. The total payment was $1,000. The order was shipped to the customer then in July the green dot card was frozen. We called to find out and they said it’s under investigation because there’s someone else that re-load belonged to. They said they would have someone from the investigation team call us in a few days.
Well, 3 weeks has passed and no call. So we check the account daily and 2 days ago the $1,000 was refunded back to the purchaser. Now, we are out of the money and the purchaser got his entire order. So we called Green Dot to close out the card, as this was a horrible experience. Then the lady says, "We can't close the card because there is a note attached that says someone from the investigation team will contact us." I proceeded to tell her that we were told this exact thing one month ago. Now there is over $400 on the card that is frozen, we cannot get a refund, we cannot get an answer as to why we can't close out the card and get our balance. We also cannot speak to anyone on their so called "investigation team".
Please beware because this may happen to you. We offered to provide invoices, etc. for the date we received payment, the address where the gel caps were sent, everything and they refuse to give us a straight answer as to what’s going on.

I am a disabled veteran attempting to bid on items, I need to restore a classic car. I just wanted to simplify the process in eBay. I will now have to spend valuable time and money processing a formal complaint and wait for the results of the investigation. Why do stores in the USA allow thieves to set-up shop in their stores, turn around and sell the fradulent items to their customers?
I will also place an ad in the local newspaper warning other customers of Green Dot/Visa debit cards that Walgreens is selling to customers. Additionally, I will post the fraud notice on Sally's List/ Web-Site. Local customers should be aware that not only Green Dot/Visa is involved but that our local Walgreens is an active participant. I filed my taxes through Turbo Tax and chose this option because they advertised it as being a faster option. The alternative would have been to wait about four weeks for the IRS to mail me a check. Needless to say, I wanted my money sooner so I had them mail me a Green Dot card. Within a matter of days, I received my card. Two days later, the money was deposited into my account and I was able to make purchases.
Approximately one week later, after trying to make a purchase, I came to realize that my card was locked. I called Green Dot for an explanation and they informed me that my account was being investigated and they required a copy of my photo ID, Social Security card, as well as a utility bill in my name in order to perform a full investigation. I don't have any bills in my name so I sent the other two. They informed me that it would take 10 business days and someone would get back to me. That time had passed and I still had not received a phone call.
I spoke with four service representatives, three supervisors and got nowhere. They will not budge without that utility bill. They said that it was to verify my home address even though it's clearly displayed on my photo ID. Had I went the traditional way and chose to have a check sent to me, I would be spending my money right now without any problems. I have been waiting almost a month and still, no progress is being made. It seems that there are thousands of people that go through this every year which means that Green Dot (now partnered with Turbo Tax) is holding all of this money and collecting interest from these accounts while I sit here broke and in debt.
How is it that these corporations would need to question a deposit made by the IRS? If I was responsible for fraud, wouldn't the IRS be responsible for catching that and filing charges? And If it's fraud they're worried about, why allow me access to my money for the first week, instead of investigating when the money was first deposited? I got a credit once for my monthly fee because they sent me an offer that if I load now with a MoneyPak, I would get no charge. However, they didn't inform me that I had to purchase it at a CVS and not from Walgreens. That was nice. Also, they agreed to close my old cards and said that I would not be responsible for the remaining balance owed due to card fees.
Be warned, though. Their consumer protections are not the same as a real bank. They have an "affiliate bank" and they deal with all disputes based on the retailer's policies. They put the consumer second and the retailer first. They do not have the authority to reverse transactions effectively and waste your time faxing in disputes that will be rejected every time. The rep named Jevrel and all the other reps are of Indian descent and do not communicate well at all. They are stubborn and brain dead. He kept putting words in my mouth saying that my issue was a quality dispute and that I didn't want the number. He basically was telling me anything he wanted just to justify the resolution. I warned him to stop repeating that it was the reason and told him to read the dispute letter.
The merchant misrepresented their product and didn't inform me of the return policy until the receipt was printed. They wouldn't allow me to return it even though it was one minute after I bought it. A different representative said, "Green Dot is not a legitimate bank," and that I should go to a real bank if I expect real consumer protections. What sucks is that I called to make sure my dispute would qualify based on the circumstances and they said yes. But now, I can't take advantage of the partial credit I would have gotten had I dealt with the store.
T-mobile defrauded me, they offer return policies on everything except the prepaid phones. They charged me $80 for it + $50 for airtime that is completely nonreturnable. They would have let me return the phone had Green Dot not misled me on top of it and saved me a lot of time and hassle. Lesson: always make sure you know the return policy, then throw a tantrum that they didn't tell you first! Also, do not expect any dispute effectiveness because they are not a real bank! Unless you simply haven't received a credit yet, their dispute process is a joke.

I have a Nursing License and FBI clearances and they refused to let me pay my bill.
I am a victim of domestic violence. My husband will kill me for this. Now, my mother-in-law who paid the bill for me and expected they check her bills are going to bounce for helping me protecting me from her son. I am in a lot of trouble over this.

After registering the card that I bought, they had me wait for a week and said they will just send me a new card with my name on it. I got the card. It has my name but it also has a different number on it, which of course, is basically a different card. So, upon checking the balance on this new card, it has $0 balance. I went back to the store where I got the card and said they cannot help me with my problem. I have been calling Greendot and so far, all I got was a machine that hangs up the phone automatically. I'll definitely be calling again on the 14th if I don't have it by then, but I would love to call some consumer advocate who can totally go up against this company and get some results. By the way, when you call the 866 number you're calling Eastern Asia, which is what they told me tonight. My daughter gave me a Green Dot Visa card for my birthday and in trying to activate it, I was asked for my birthdate, social security number, home phone, cell phone, and in all too much personal information. This is a Visa card, yes, but we were not trying to get a real visa, just to use this as a gift card for the $25, nothing more.
This kind of information is personal and I will not give it out in situations like this. I actually gave them a bogus social security number, so that's safe. I finally got so enraged that they say they are sending me a check instead of activating the card. I see lots of other complaints on the internet. When I called to find out why my card had a hold on it, I got some smart-ass guy telling me that my card is not a credit card and can't be used for business transactions. He informed me that not only are they closing my card, but they will be holding my money. No warning, no nothing.
Now all of a sudden, I am getting $7.95 checks every other day from Green Dot. It costs $5.95 at Walmart to cash their own checks, and these checks can't be cashed by anyone else. After that, I never received the card and was unable to spend any more money using the temporary card. Green Dot never mailed me the real card. And after calling them two weeks later, they stated they had to report the card lost or stolen because I never received it. This went on for six weeks after the date I was suppose to receive the card. I finally asked for the remaining balance back in November 2009.
They said they would send a check call back in another two weeks if you don't receive it. Three weeks went by, I never received the check. They said they would send me a check via Federal Express but they would have to take the charges out of my remaining balance which was down to $155 because I never put any money back on the card. But they would kindly waive the last $5 charge and put it towards the FedEx shipping. So I would be receiving a check for $150. Needless to say, I never received a tracking number or a check from Federal Express. I have given up and will never use the Green Dot service again.

I've had a Green Dot prepaid MasterCard since 2003. About a year ago they instituted a new procedure whereas if you made 30 purchases or loaded $1,000.00 or more during the thirty day cycle then the monthly fee, which would be $5.95, was waived. I thought this is great as I normally loaded well over a thousand each thirty day period. After a few months, as I was checking over my transaction history, I noticed a $4.95 monthly maintenance fee was on each month and never taken off even though I had loaded over a thousand, plus usually made over 30 purchases during that time. I sent them an email about this and was told to call.
I put off calling for a bit as every time I usually called all I ever got was a recorded message. I tried again today and got through. I explained to the girl that I had gotten the notice about waiving the fee and how I complied each month. My daughter, who also has a card (she got hers just a few months after I got mine), never gets charged a fee when she makes over 30 purchases during her 30-day period. I was told something to the effect that I had a "different card" which fell under an "older or other agreement", but I could cancel that card and get a new one wherein their policy of waiving the monthly fee would apply. Keep in mind a new one would cost $9.95.
At this point I told her I was never notified I had a "different type" card and that the web site, every month, would say "congratulations your monthly fee will be waived since you loaded over a thousand dollars" or "we'll waive the monthly fee for this billing cycle if you..." Not once did it say "except for you, Jeanne, your card ain't eligible!" "It's our way of saying thanks for being a great customer!” Right. She also tried to say my daughter must have the "newer" card even though she got hers soon after I got mine. Every year they send me a new card with the same number on it without saying that it falls under some obsolete agreement. She and then her supervisor (when I asked to speak with one) offered to put ten dollars on my card as a courtesy.
The supervisor even said the ten dollars was now on my card and to spend it, then cancel the card and apply for a new prepaid Green Dot MasterCard which would be eligible for the monthly fee waiver. In other words, I get ten bucks only to have to spend $9.95 on a "new card" to be eligible. There were no warnings, no notifications that any one card was different from another. Each month the website would tell me my fee was waived since I met the requirements.
Oh yes, she also said they would be "updating the website"—this, after over a year of this being in effect! I have been paying a monthly fee that by all rights I should not have had to pay. At times when I assumed the fee was waived I tried to make a small purchase thinking I had 4 or 5 or more dollars left on my card only to have said purchase rejected due to "insufficient funds". I believe rightly I should have been refunded each monthly fee and then given the "right" card as a courtesy. I have printed out some sample pages from my account as verification in case they try to change something.

I then attempted to solve the issue online - but guess what I don't have a password and every time I attempted to create one, the system requests the same information over and over again without anyway to talk to them directly.
This is extremely upsetting as I used my initial card for PayPal. I thought it would be a secure and easy (ha,ha) way to do business. The company tries extremely hard to get a person to sign up for direct deposit. I do worry about identity theft. I believe that prepaid card are a good way to avoid impulsive and over spending. It would not activate the card without me releasing a great deal of personal information. When I tried to supply it, I kept getting "I do not understand what you are saying." After many failed attempts to activate the card, my husband called them. He had the same problem! He called back again and had to fudge the system in order to get a customer service representative.
The CSR told him they needed his social to activate the card and tried to get him to send a re-loadable card (We didn't want this; we just freaking wanted to use our gift card, dammit.) To make a long story short, the company makes it impossible to activate the card - the automated system plays dumb and hangs up even when you follow the commands correctly. The company is a scam. They rely on people not being able to activate their cards. Clearly, that is how they make a great deal of money. Between confusing customers and charging ridiculous fees every month (even when you haven't used the card) and the user fees, this is a complete ripoff.
I urge everyone to get refunds and not deal with this company. Do not give them any of your business. What a despicable way to rip people off during hard economic times. Additionally, if you make the mistake of throwing away the plastic package it comes in, you may not be able to activate your card at all. Be careful in opening the card, as there are numbers they require you to read off to them in order to activate the card. This number is ripped by opening the card. Once again, this is another way they can deny you your own money!

On October 5, 2009, I went to CVS to purchase a money pack reload for a Green Dot card. My friend in Greenville needed to get his car from alongside a road and didn't have the money at the time. I went to CVS and picked up a card and about $120.00 worth of other stuff. I pulled out my Visa, and when the cashier realized that I wanted to pay with it, she stated that I had to pay cash for the card. Now using my Visa, I have a lot of protection from problems. So I left the store, went to the ATM, pulled out $140.00, went back, and purchased a $120.00 card that cost me $124.95.
Upon arriving home and scratching off the back to reveal the number (The scratch-off was actually a sticker that pulled the numbers off the card), I did several three-way calls with customer service. My friend was trying to get the money on his card. The agents did not speak English well, and no one spoke English as a first language. No one seemed to actually understand what I was telling them, though at the end, they said the money would be on the card the next business day. Well, it has now been over a week and still no money, and I was told to go back to CVS and get a refund.
Today, the store manager spent close to over an hour, dealing with this. They told her to call at 6:30, because they were open 24 hours. And then, she was told to call at 9:30 and also to fax all of the information to them. Then, they proceeded to tell her that they were not open 24 hours and not to call before 9:30. I just got off the phone with CVS corporate, and they are looking into the matter to try and rush this process. They have received so many complaints that the Green Dot may actually be pulled from the store.
Please be advised that if you do not have time or extra money to waste, you should never use Green Dot for anything. It would have saved me time and headache just to overnight a money order.

I purchased two Green Dot Pre-paid Visa cards In September 2009, one for "online shopping" and one for shopping anywhere. Since that time, I have spent the balance and have been receiving two to three daily unwanted text messages encouraging me to re-load my Green Dot cards. I know my balance is at $0.00; I put it at that balance and don't need 2,000 reminders.
I will re-load it if and when I choose to! Not as a result of constant and annoying (not to mention costly) reminders! I have returned these text messages, and I was asking to not be sent these messages, as I am on a pre-paid cell phone plan, which charges me 10 cents per text! At that rate, Green Dot is costing me 30% of every dollar I pay towards my cell phone account. How do I or what can I do to stop these both costly and unwanted text messages from dwindling my cell phone account?

On September 20 of this year, I went to a Green Dot machine and inserted $200 to add funds to my Green Dot debit master card. The machine accepted the funds. When I went to use the card, it was declined several times. I tried calling the customer service line. When asked to enter my account number, my call was disconnected every time. On Monday, I finally reached someone under to report a lost or stolen card, and they gave me another number to call. When I finally reached someone, they told me that I would have to purchase a new card for the money on the old card to be transferred into. I did purchase the new card on Wednesday and called them back. They told me that the receipt for the old card would have to process overnight and to call back the following day.
I did call the following day, which was Thursday, and they told me that they would transfer the funds, which would be available on Friday. On Friday, again, there were no funds available. So I called again and spoke with Edwin. He told me that he would get it taken care of, and again, I was told the funds would be available the next day (Saturday).
I checked again on Saturday, and again, no funds were available. So I called again. I spoke again with Edwin, and he said that they were unable to transfer funds from my old account to the new one and would only refund the $195.05 back to me. I told him that they should have told me this from the very beginning and not had made me purchase a new card. I also told them I wanted a full refund back, because the cards were purchased for the reason that it will be used right away.

I used my Walmart Green Dot card to purchase an airline ticket and had just walked out loading the card for the amount of the ticket and the card was swiped at least 3-4 times. I had a family emergency to make. I submitted the card info on 9/18/09 only to find out that Hotwire.com does not accept theses types of cards. I'm getting the runaround with the people on the back of the card. Delta Airlines faxed the Green Dot Processing Dept. with the Green Dot and they have yet to get their sorry behinds and locate a document stating they have not received or collected on the $338.99 from the acct. No one on the back of the card seems to know which way is what. I spoke with about 20 people from a Delta/ Hotwire agent to the Walmart Money card and have all sorts of confirmations and no one, absolutely no one, can get this resolved.

"No monthly charge in any month. You make 30 purchases or more, otherwise only $5.95 per month." That is false advertisement stating No Monthly Charge, then stating Otherwise $5.95 Monthly Charge. This is misguided info, not Kosher. Check the link for yourself of Green Dot Pre-paid Card no monthly charge.

Nobody is available to talk to about my account. I bought one of their temporary Credit cards for $100 with $10 service cost. I have not used this card at any time. They told me that I would receive an ad with my balance to be used as Visa in any transaction. They have not sent me any card and I could not get any working number for this corporation. I need to get my money back. It has been about two years since I bought the card in one of the CVS stores in Florida. I have lost the number on the card since I bought. I could not even get anyone to talk to.

My husband and I loaded a prepaid Green Dot card from Walmart with money for our monthly bills. We purchased the card with no problem and loaded it with money with no issues, either. Once we tried to use the money on the card, however, the transaction was declined. We called to see what the problem was and were informed that because my married name did not match my maiden name on my social security card, they had put a hold on our account, and we would be unable to use the funds on the card until we faxed in information to verify my identity.
My husband went to the social security office, the closest one being a 20-minute drive, and had my name officially changed on the card (I couldn't go because I worked the same hours that the office was open), even though the U.S. government had already issued me a passport and driver's license with my married name with no problem. The social security office let me know it would be two weeks before my new card arrived. Until it did, we had no way to pay our bills because the Green Dot company refused to refund our money.
I then called to let the Green Dot company know that I had legally changed my name and wouldn't receive the card for a few weeks, and would there be any way to fax other identifying information to unblock my card? I was told, after a very long wait on hold (it actually COSTS $2.00 each time you call to talk to a customer service representative at Green Dot, and they had no problem debiting fees off my card even though I wasn't allowed to use it), I was informed if I faxed my driver's license and marriage license, they would take the hold off, they didn't need the social security card.
So I gathered the needed information and headed in to town to send the fax. I even faxed a copy of my passport and birth certificate along with the driver's and marriage licenses just to be safe. Once the fax went through on my end, I called to be sure they received it. I spoke to a representative who put me on hold three times because they had "an overwhelming number of faxes" to search through. Finally, he came back to the phone to let me know he had found it, but the only thing missing was my social security card. I tried to keep my calm and tell the man, who was not the same person I talked to earlier, that I had just called and was told I didn't need to send my social security card, and I couldn't for another few weeks.
He just kept repeating to me that he had to have the social security card and hardly acknowledged the fact that I had just been told I didn't need it. If I had known I needed it, I would not have taken the trouble of faxing the information. I could not convince him that the other representative told me opposite information, and he didn't seem the least bit sorry. I still am trying to get the money, but I am not sure that even sending the social security card, when it comes, will be enough. I feel this company is being unlawful.

This company customer service never gives the correct information and when you go to do a transaction it's declined. You call the company and then it's always something else they forgot to inform you of. This is a joke. You do that so you will have the money to pay for something and in the end you still end up not having the money to pay for the transaction.

On 2/26/07 I purchased a Greendot prepaid MasterCard. The cashier told me all I had to do was call a number on the card, and it would be ready to use. I told her that I had to use it that day to make a payment. When I got home I called the number on the card to activated it. The customer service representative gave me a card number and a pin number. I called the company I needed to make the payment to he ran the number and then told me the number was not valid. I went back to Rite Aid and told them what happened. One of the ladies made a phone call and was told the card was good and they would not refund my money. I came home and called another number on the card this time I talked to a young man. He checked and told me the card was good. Once again I tried to make the payment, and was told the card would not go through and again I called green dot MasterCard. The man told me that the card was okay. The next day I decided to try and purchase food with the card. Again when I went to pay I was told the card was not valid. I went back to Rite Aid and talked to the manager.
The cashier had told me just minutes before they have been having trouble with some of the cards and had given refunds. The manager told me he would get it straightened out or refund my money. He took my card into his office. When he came back he told me that he made a phone call and the card would work. I came home and tried to make the payment with it. It would not go through again. I don't know what else to do I have given all of the numbers correct.

2) What do you do with the personal information I am giving you? Answer: We discard the personal information after we activate your Green Dot Visa with a four-digit pin code.
3) Why do you need my social security number? Answer: Because the USA anti-terrorist law requires that we get social security number for identification.
4) If the card has been gifted to me with a $90.00 cash value, why can't I have access to this money? Answer: You must give all the personal identification information required before we could activate the card.
At this point, I refused to give my social security number and ended the phone call. My $90.00 cash gift remains captive by Green Dot Visa. The Walgreen Corporation, who sells the card, absolves itself from any refund liability.
I want the public at large to be alerted to possible problems behind purchase of the Green Dot Visa. No one should reveal personal identification information to untraceable strangers such as those behind the phone at Green Dot. It may place one in danger of future ID theft and fraud. I choose to forfeit my $90.00 cash gift to save many times that amount from ID theft. My problem is that I can't spread the word fast enough.

On August 7, 2006 I decided to purchase a pre-paid mastercard. I purchased an activation flyer from cumberland farms in Worcester, MA, in the amount of 409.95, which was to have a credit limit of 400.00. I first went onto their website and activated my card then called when I did not receive my card number. When I called (866-999-9439) I was connected to someone who could barely speak english, then was transferred to lost or stolen cards line (not sure why), (877-434-3578). I then explained to the woman that I spoke with that I just purchased the card and wished to make an online purchase and needed my card number, she then looked up my info and hung up on me.
I called back the 866 no. and spoke with another woman who also couldn't speak english and she explained to me that the company changed their policy and that I would have to wait for the card to be mailed and that it would take up to 7 business days, I said no problem and waited for the card. I have still to receive the pre-paid mastercard and have made several attempts to contact the company, I continue to either a) get connected to someone who does not have the ability to speak english, b) hung up on, or c) voicemail.
