I fell for Chase Special Rate Checks, offering 0.00% fixed APR until March 2009. I paid a transaction fee of $199.00. I proceeded to make payments in the amount of whatever was purchased that month on the card and the sum that I divided by 6 months in order to pay back what I needed to, to have a negative balance by 3/1/09. However, when I called customer service regarding finance charges of 12.99%, I was told that the checks did not work that way. In other words I was to reduce the sum of the special check first and they would charge me finance charges on the remaining charges because they were carrying them over. I have had the card since 1984, and pay an annual fee faithfully. I certainly feel like I have been ripped off. I will not be using the card again once this is finished. I have participated in Home Depot special financing in the past and have been able to pay off the monthy charges first to avoid any finance charges, that is the way things should be done and by the way they never charged me a transaction fee to do so. Very disappointing experience.

I understand that all financial banks are being affected by this economy, but in actuality they were the greedy ones in the first place to offer loans to people who could not afford it so they could get the commission. But anyways, they are unethical because they are increasing APR's just to make more money. It is unethical because before when I opted out of an increase in APR they said okay.. but now, if I wanted to opt out, Chase Credit Cards would close your credit card. We all know if you close an account you lower your credit score..so of course I'm not gonna close it.. I just won't use the Chase Credit Card anymore.. P.S Bank of America are greedy bastards (they bought out Chase)!!

Update on my complaint against Chase (2/04/09) ... I just went online to be SURE Chase processed my Minimum Automatic Payment which as clearly listed on my statement as Minimum Automatic Payment Due - $54.12. Guess what...they only processed $10 as an automatic payment, thus leaving my account over-the-limit, thus generating their right to assess another $39 fee to my account! Regardless of whether they were right or wrong, if I don't bring my account UNDER the $300 limit, they can continue assessing this fee. So I paid the additional $44.12, then called Chase to advise them of such, and to question why they did not process the entire 54.12 which was listed as the Minimum Payment Due. Their rep told me that (somewhere) in their contract they are not responsible for processing over-the-limit funds. I pointed out that if my STATEMENT clearly states a specific amount being due as the MINIMUM AMOUNT DUE, then that is what it means is due, right? What part of that is so difficult to understand? He was speechless. I've had it. I'm filing a complaint with the Comptroller of Currency and looking for any class action suits that might be able to go after these sleeze balls.

I found this site yesterday and quickly realized that I am not the only one that is complaining about Chases' tactics. I received notices that the interest rates on two of my Chase cards are raising unless I opt-out this month. I have been carrying on an ongoing dialog with people in customer service regarding these changes. I have never missed a payment, always pay more than minimum and have an excellent credit score. A portion of their answer follows Please be assured that the change in your account terms was not an adverse reaction to information in your credit history. At this time, we're attempting to standardize the interest rates on our credit card accounts. The change to your account terms is a result of our attempt to offer consistent rates to all credit card customers.
This standardization will raise the rate on my Business card from 9.99% to 16.99%! I, too, am outraged that a company that received bailout dollars that the American public will ultimately assist with repayment has taken the money and in return stuck it to its customers; especially those with a business card that are using it to keep their small businesses in operation in this struggling economy while their top executive gets more than 20 million in bonuses! When discovering this site I was pleased to notice that a class action suit has been filed dealing with the transfer balance Chase mess. I suggest everyone contact their Senators and Representatives, news programs, and anyone and everyone who might bring this treatment to the forefront. Being complacent is not the answer. If anyone has other contact ideas, please include them in your message.

What is to stop them from making a 100.00 service charge next time?

When I applied for the Chase Amazon Credit Card in 12/04, I was offered a 3.99% rate for the life of the loan balance. Chase has now instituted a $10 monthly transaction fee, which according to my Feb. 2009 statement has increased my effect APR to 8.62%. This is in violation of the 3.99% initial loan agreement. I understand that Chase may require this fee from new customers, but the bank must honor its original agreement with me. Upon calling Chase and speaking to a customer service representative on Feb. 5, 2009, I was told the fee was non negotiable.

If this is true then that is false advertisement when they say in the promotion LIFE of balance.

My story is the same as everyone else's. Signed up for a balance transfer (high-interest prime-tied private student loan) fixed at 3.99% for the life of the loan. A/O January 1 2009 was assessed a service charge of $10/month and increase in minimum charge percentage from 2% to 5%.
There was a Change in Terms Notice enclosed in my statement of 11/22/08 warning of this breach of good faith, trust, and ethics. This was about 5.5 weeks before it went into effect. The closest mention to an opt-out phrase is this (with regard to the $10 service charge, which they clearly consider to be a finance charge): The account service charge is billed to your account monthly whether or not you use your account, and you agree to pay it when billed. The charge is $10 per month ($210 total annually), and it is a finance charge. The charge is non-refundable unless you notify us that you wish to close your account within 30 days of the date we mail your statement on which the charge is imposed and at the same time, you pay your outstanding balance in full.....If your account is closed by you or us, we will continue to impose the service charge each month until you pay your outstanding balance in full and terminate your account relationship. They also state that the principal factors we considered in amending your account include the APRs and revolving balances on your account. (HMMM - these are not mentioned as potential problem areas in the original transfer offer...and, in my case, they did not change, except that the balance got lower and lower and never went up.) I find this caveat interesting in light of the lottery angle described in an earlier posting. Was it really just our luck that got us all the $10 increase? For me, this represented a whopping 50% increase in the dollar amount of my finance charge. I couldn't help but factor that fact in when I read their reassuring claim: Important: Your APRs will not be impacted by these charges. They really must think we are all stupid. Well, sure enough, on Jan 5, the $10 was posted on the account and raised my existing balance by $10. And guess what, my effective APR, as stated on my January statement is now 5.99%. Compare this to my December statement, which clearly states my effective APR at 3.99%. Is this an example of no impact on my APR? Chase is clearly more stupid than any of us idiots out here.. I would not lower myself to contacting them. I know what they did and so do they, and by what I've read here and elsewhere, it is clear they do not care. So, I got myself a home equity loan for more than double the amount of the balance, at a rate lower than my new non-impacted effective APR and with a monthly payment lower than my new Chase minimum payment, paid off the Chase balance and 3 other credit cards, and got my husband the flat screen he's been aching for...just in time for the Super Bowl. I secured this loan using only my salary (not my husband's), our 50% equity in our house whose monthly payment is $428, and my 757 credit score (never late or delinquent with Chase or any other creditor). Chase is crazy. I clearly will never do business with them again and their reputation is seriously damaged. It is now 4 PM on Feb. 5 and the $10 charge has not yet been added to my $0 balance at Chase. Will check tomorrow to see if it's been added. If and when it is added, I will close the account and get my $10 refund. In the meantime I'll keep the credit line - it gives me a really good debt-to-available credit ratio!!

Unlike your article states that chase has become more user friendly, Chase has raised the interest rate on all 3 of my card accounts to a 12.99 V. One was 7.99 F, the other 2 were 8.99 F. I have never been late with them since they've been open and we also have a checking account and Mortgage with them. I opted out on 2 of them with the exception of the smallest one as that is my overdraft card. When we applied for a mortgage in Nov 07, they lowered all my limits which caused me to have over 50% balances. I tryed to negotiate with them but to no avail. Seema would not even let me speak with a manager. She stated there weren't any on the floor at the time and took my number saying they would call me back in 24 to 48 hours. I then called the number above and spoke with B J Parker who at least spoke with me and correctly closed 2 of my accounts before they were increased. I don't understand the reasoning behind this rate hike. We haven't been late on anything and always at least make the minimum payment ON TIME.

Like most of the people that have written here to complain about Chase and their crooked credit practices, I too have just had this experience with them. I have been a Chase card holder for many years. I have always paid my bills on time, never being late and have paid at least the minimum due or more. Because I was a good customer to them, they constantly sent me offers to transfer balances at lower interest rates. I accepted their offers, paid down the balance and have been in good standings with them. A couple of years ago, I again accepted an offer from them to transfer balances to a lower rate of 4.99%. I have been on time with all payments, and paying more than the minimum. This rate was good for the life of the loan and was a contract with Chase. And what do I now get for being a good customer all these years? A shocking bill increasing my minimum payment from 2% to 5%. This increase is almost impossible for me to be able to pay every month! And, along with that a bonus of a $10 fee every month that they will now be charging me. This fee sounds crooked to me, because on one hand it is called a fee, but on the other hand they call it a purchase (that I did NOT authorize!) so they could add it to my balance owed to them at a much higher interest rate than my 4.99%... Meaning it will never be paid off and keep increasing by $10 until my other balance is paid off. How is this legal?
I called Chase to ask about their $10 fee and the agent told me they needed more money to stay in business, so now I had to pay them to have a their credit card. So my Tax bailout money was not enough for them?? He also said Chase sent notices to me three times that they would be doing this, and this is not true. I was never notified. He then told me if I didn't like it, I was free to opt out by closing my account and paying them what I owed them in full immediately. I then asked about the increase in the minimum payment and why they were doing that to me, their good customer. He told me that Chase wanted to get the money they loaned to me back in their hands as soon as possible, thus the increase. He said the economy was bad, so they needed that money. I thought to myself, he must think I am really stupid Chase wants that money so they can loan it back out to someone else at a much higher interest rate and this is how they are going to do it since they have a contract with me at a lower rate. Again, he told me if I didn't like it, then I could close my account and pay them off. He was very smug and when I told him how hard and unfair his company was being to us he simply said I'm sorry you feel that way' like I'm the one with the problem. But of course he would say that, he can't let on if he thinks it's wrong because he wants to keep his job. And by the way, he never offered the option of taking the fee off if I agreed to a higher interest rate like some here have said they were offered. This has made me ill and I feel violated, as well as everyone else here must feel. As long as Chase gets away with it, what will stop other Creditors form doing this? Chase is paving the way to bring down the rest of America to financial ruin. Isn't that a lovely way of saying thank you for the billions in bailout money? I don't know what I am going to do about my situation, or what I can do but when I do close my account, I will NEVER do business with Chase again. I am telling every friend and relative I have about what Chase is doing, because if they can do it to me, what's to stop them from doing it to them? I suggest everyone this has happened to to tell everyone, get this dirty practice in the public eye. I plan to write to the Federal Reserve Consumer Help site. I also plan to write to our US President and senators to let them know how the company they are bailing out is treating the taxpayers. I plan to write to cable news channels and newspapers. I think everyone Chase is hurting needs to be heard, voice your opinion tell the world.

I already have an extremely high interest rate of 14.99% fixed APR with WaMu because of a past bankruptcy. My credit score was gradually improving as I kept my payments up and payed extra on my bill each month. Now the good part. I recieved a notice from Chase saying there was a mistake on my disclosure and in fact they were increasing my APR to 23.99% or Prime Rate plus + 18.99% Variable Rate whichever is greater. Thats a 9% increase in finance charges. This is ridiculous. Please investigate Chase bank for fraud and extortion and racketeering and breach of contract. They have possibly broken predatory lending laws by reneging on their agreements with probable thousands of customers like me who accepted their generous offer of low interest for the life of the balance card deals. They have decided that the life is up.
They offered their customers 3.9% life of the balance loans on credit cards years ago. Now, after paying for 5 years at the rate they have changed the plan and added a fraudulent $10 monthly service fee when no service was requested nor accepted, to make the effective APR go to 6.5% . They also decided to change the min payment from 2% of the unpaid balance to 5% of the unpaid balance. They told me, in a phone call, that they could take off the monthly service charge if I sign a new contract and agree to 7%. Isnt that extortion- adding a charge and offering to remove it for agreeing to higher interest? Consumer affairs web site is full of similar complaints from scores of angry customers. At least one class action suit has been filed against them. Could they change it again and increase the service fee to $50/month and make the minimum payment 25% of the unpaid balance? They must not be allowed to change the terms of the original agreement. Please insist that an injunction be placed on them barring any changes to the original contract that was to be in place for the life of the balance until a court can decide whether or not is legal for them to breech the contract.

My excellent credit and faithful payments made no difference.

I have an excellent credit score, have never exceeded my credit limit or missed a payment. When I called to ask them about it, they said only that I could opt out, which means close the account. I have great credit - just ran my report last week, so I know this has nothing to do with me. When I called and asked why, they said they had sent me a note last November. (That doesnt make the charges appropriate).
Chase customer service said becasue I have a balance on a promotional rate they are not making money on me and need to charge me the $10 to make money (off me). The increased monthly minimum is to help me pay off my card sooner. I was surprised that they came right out and said they werent making money on me...so I have to pay more. This sounds like a bait and switch. It seems unethical (but I guess not illegal) to get a customer hooked on one rate and then decide you werent making enough money and start charging new fees. On my December statement I noticed an increase in my payment amount from $164 to $405 and also Chase added a monthy fee of $10. When I called them they said this was a change in terms due to economic conditions and that the only thing they could offer was to raise my rate to 7.99% to lower my monthly payment. I'm very good at keeping records and know I have the original terms of my transfers but I'm guessing they probably have clauses saying they can change the rates anytime they want. Still, given the economic bailouts by the government, I would think someone would be putting a stop to banks doing things like this when they know now is the worst time to be increasign payments rates. I'm not able to afford the high payments but I do not want to pay the extra money, in rate increase, to a bank that treats it's customers this way. My account is in good standing and I've had it for many years. They are litterally CHASEing their customers away. Is there anything I can sue them for? Thanks, Garth

Chase also raises my minimum payment from 2% to 5% increasing my monthly payments from $143 to $353. Chase tells me (spoke to Tom Lions in Columbus Ohio 8:44 HST 2/4/09) that if I opt out they will force me to pay the entire debt off within 30 days or raise my interest rate to 7.9% (which is worse than the $10/month fee) Of course, according to them they still can change whatever they want (i.e. not uphold their 7.9% agreement just like they are not upholding their 3.99% agreement). In January 2009, I noticed our minimum balance payment went from 2% to 5% of the unpaid balance. Also, Chase added a $10 fee. Looking at the bottom of our statement, the APR listed is higher than our agreement (our new rate is above 9% APR). I called and talked to 3 different reps. They offered to let us go back to the 2% minimum payment if we gave up our 3.99% APR and accepted a 7.99% APR until 2011. Also the reps stated they would remove the $10 monthly fee if we accepted the higher rate. I declined and told them we paid a fee up front to get the 3.99% rate and plan to keep it. The reps tried to tell me that we still have our 3.99% APR with a $10 fee added due to the economy. However, when I look on our statement, it shows that our rate now is above 9% APR. There is no way this could be legal and they are not abiding by their end of the agreement. We have not been late on one payment with this account and almost always pay more than the minimum payment. We plan to pay off and close this account and never do business with Chase again. We feel we were lured in and lied to. We refuse to do business like this. It is very sad news that our tax dollars are going to support companies like Chase that can be so deceitful to their good honest customers. I feel they are trying to get all they can from good customers before the federal regulations go into effect in 2010. We have 5 credit card accounts with Chase, and only one of them has had these additional costs imposed on it, so far. Their customer service reps. claim that terms on those accounts will not change, because I have "opted out" and closed the accounts. Is their a class action law suit against Chase in process yet? I contacted Chase yesterday to advise them that I have lost my alimony and my business has gone under. I only have a small account with Chase, credit line $300 (by choice) and they are charging me nearly 27% interest which makes it difficult to get the balance down. I inquired as to whether or not they could at least lower my interest rate while I am struggling with my finances. Bottom line: No. They would not even revue my account (which has had an excellent rating in the past) because my balance was $20 over the limit (convenient for them, they add a $39 penalty to the account for that.) Last month I set up automatic payments with them and am scheduled for a minimum payment in a couple days - which obviously they can see on my record. I don't expect any bail out. I just needed some help with the interest rate and it occurred to me that, in the midst of the current economic crisis in the US, they would take my need seriously and extend some kind of consideration. No. Their reason for not reviewing the account was based on the fact that my last purchase brought the balance $20 over the limit. My question is ... in the past, purchases were declined if it brought the account over the limit. So why not my last purchase? I think these credit card companies let such purchases go through so as to generate, yet, another fee in their favor. And with the interests rates falling on everything else, WHY is the government not making the credit card companies lower the rates they are chargning consumers?? It is highway robbery. They are nothing but loan sharks. PLEASE do something to make these companies act more responsibily.

While checking my Chase Credit Card statement I noticed that my monthly minimum payment had more than doubled and there was a new fee of $10 (service charge) on the account. When I called the service rep told me the terms of my 4.99% lifetime fixed rate balance transfer loan have changed. The 2% minimum is now 5% AND there is a $10 per month service fee. I was told that Chase could remove the $10 fee and reduce the minimum back to 2%, if I allowed Chase to bump up the interest rate to 7.99%. When I asked they could do this, I was told the Service Agreement gives them the right to do that.
This is completely unethical, after paying a large transfer fee on the front end to get the good interest rate, Chase could start charging the user any amount they want and when ever they want.

I was promised a rate of 4.99% until my balance was paid in full. Then I opened my Jan. 2009 statement to find they doubled my minimum payment and have begun to charge me a $10 per month fee (placed in a different fee category of 7.99%, so that while you pay down the balance that is sitting at 4.99% this second category is accuring additional finance charges that don't get touched until you've paid the first balance in full).
I have never missed a payment or been late. According to their STORY, they sent out a letter to me on Dec. 4 to inform me that they were changing the rules in the middle of the game. I requested a copy of this letter that I never reveived. I haven't received the second copy either. When I called to find out what was going on with my bill when I received it in Jan. they told me if I paid off the balance in full by the due date I would get a credit for the $10 finance charge. So I paid off the sizeable balance and called back today to make sure I get the credit but am now told the only way to get it is to close my account OR I will continue to be charged a monthly maintenance fee of $10. Now who in their right mind would pay $120 to keep open a credit card account? So I closed my account afterall, which is what they really wanted me to do in the first place I guess because I have good credit and they can't make enough money off of me....when I think I signed up for this credit card as a SERVICE to me. Chase Bank needs to understand that they are providing a SERVICE to the customers who choose to open an account with them. I hope the banks will not keep merging together so that consumers will have choices as to where they will want to bank and banks will remember their place.

This will cancel the $10/monthly service charge. They should send you a letter stating this. Then go ahead and pay the balance off. I had taken advantage of special low rates in the past and now, 'due to market conditions', the credit card company has exercised the option to change the terms, substantially increase my rate and add on a monthly charge that amounts to nothing more than additional interest. I called to plead my case and was told that the only way to return to the 2% minimum payment was to allow the rate to be increased to 7.99%. Since I am currently unemployed and having difficulty finding another job, I agreed to the increase. I feel victimized by this company - I have always paid my bills on time and pay additional every month as well. I have continued to make the minimum monthly payments along with extra payments while on unemployment, but that does not count for anything with this greedy company. I intend to write to every congressman and senator I can to report this experience as I feel it is predatory lending at its worst. I only wish consumers had the same options to 'change the terms' in the middle of the payment stream if they encounter difficulties such as a job loss or illness.

I spoke to the Chase rep and explain to her that I previously spoke to another rep prior to paying off the card to inquir about finance charge and was told that a finance charge may or may not be applied since the balance due will be paid off in full and if I do get a statement for solely a finance charge to call back and request to have it be remove and a rep will be able to remove the finance charge. However today I spoke to Carlie and was told that no matter if I paid the balance in full and my account is close I still will be charge finance charge and have to pay it and they cannot remove the finance charge. I ask to speak to a supervisor and was told there is nothing they can do I just have to pay the finance charge. I also notice on the back of my statement states We accrue periodic finance charges on a transaction, fee, or finance charge from the date it is added to your daily balance until payment in full is received on your account, well my question is payment in full has been received on my account so why am I being charge finance charges for over a hundred dollars for a close account I paid off in full and after their rep told me it will be remove if I was charge. This is just another way to swindle more funds out of consumer and also if that is the case I guess once the finance charge is paid I will be charge another finance charge for the first finance charge. The reps statment as well as the statement on the back of the bill contradicts each other by stating one thing and meaning another. Same story as all the others..
CHASE BANK IS BEHAVING LIKE A LOAN SHARK - New $10 fee, or, the increased rate from 3.99 to 7.79. Same explanation from the phone reps, this is due to the economy, and that Chase needs to build revenue So they are targeting the Perfect Paying customer, who has not increased their debts to Chase. We were told we only had option A or B The new $10 fee, or the higher interest rate. We told them we would take OPTION C. We would pay in full, less the $10 fee and close the account. The phone rep told us we would still be charged the fee and Late fees on top of that. I wrote a lengthy letter to Chase, including our payment, less the fee, which I mailed to special address for disputes etc. We told them we were taking OPTION C at our discretion, since we never received any advance notice from them regarding a change in terms. Fortunately, our balance had reached a low enough level that we could pay it off in full, from the savings we were hoping to use for vacation we've never had. And now thanks to Chase, we are credit card debt free. But TWO WEEKS AFTER PAYING IN FULL, we received a letter from Chase, stating their regrets, and suggesting we call to see if their is anything else they can do to possibly re-open our account. They made a point to mention in this letter, that we STILL HAD A REMAINING BALANCE OF $10. This fired us up a bit, so we had to call again, and request a supervisor. The supervisor finally agreed to waive the remaining $10 fee balance. (yet to be confirmed in writing). She had the nerve to defend Chase by stating that we had the pleasure of benefiting from the low rate up until now. My heart breaks and worries for all the others who have fallen victim to these new actions by Chase. The increased mimimum payment can put many good paying customers over the edge. We would be suffering as well, if this had taken place just a year ago. I have written letters to Chase, and some Media watchdogs, and the Dept of Treasury, and State Senator. I find this FEARFUL BECAUSE... If Chase Bank is allowed to take this action, then what's to stop all of our Lenders from suddenly becoming Loan Sharks? If this sort of thing is allowed, and we suddenly open all of our statements one day to find similar new terms applied...... then whatever hope remains for the economy to hang on will be gone. The effects of such a possibility would be earthshattering. The banks think they have problems now? All of us are paying for the economy everywhere we turn, besides the tax dollars being used for the bailout. Lost 401k's, and higher living costs from fuel, groceries, healthcare, not to mention worrying if our jobs will last. Practices such as this simply cannot be allowed to happen. I hope everyone writes letters, and sends them to many recipients.

Yah right… that was the same agreement I had with them when I agreed to transfer some other balances to their card in exchange for a “low set rate. I know they could care less about one little customer, but this is what their fraudulent practices will cost them financially in terms of this one little customer as I immediately cancelled my card and refuse to ever do business with them again. 1 – they will lose the monthly finance charges I paid faithfully on my account as I will be getting a loan from my credit union today and paying off their card by the end of the week (this new loan will be at a slightly higher rate, which I could care less about considering how badly I have been treated by Chase), 2 – they will be bad-mouthed to everyone I know and thus lose many future potential customers, 3) I refuse to consider financing the new home purchase that I am considering through them, and 4 – the new car I have my eye on will not be financed through them. As I said… I am sure they could care less about me (that is pretty apparent), but I feel better at least knowing that I will be costing them thousands of dollars in the future in lost business.

We retired last July and moved to North Carolina. One of the things we did to prepare for living on retirement income was take advantage of the myriad offers from Chase bank to transfer balances at a low fixed rate until that balance was paid off. We always made our payment on time and it was always more than the minimum. Last Tuesday we got our monthly statement and the minimum payment had jumped from to two percent of the balance to five percent. In addition, we were charged a $10 fee. When we called the company we were told that the only way to return to the previous minimum payment and avoid the monthly $10 fee was to agree to allowing them to almost double the interest rate. Wednesday we received the statement from Chase on a card that is used occasionally to pay for a catalog or online purchase. We pay that balance when we receive the bill. We were charged the $10 fee on this card also. The company's response on this was they aren't making any money on the account because we pay it off so they will be charging $10 per month for us to have credit available. The only way to avoid that is to cancel the card. Isn't this a breach of the original contract that was in effect when we transferred the balances? And what about the card that gets paid off every month? How can they charge us $10 a month for not carrying a balance? They charge the merchant when I make the purchase.

Same story as everyone else. Starting January 2009, $10 service charge on 3.99% balance transfer account, plus increase in minimum payment from 2% to 5%. Their alternative was to opt out by transferring to 7.99% rate until 2011, effectively doubling the rate for the next two years, and then subject to increase again after that. No thanks! I've been a loyal Chase customer for years. So much for having excellent credit and making all payments on time. There are a couple law firms that have filed a class action lawsuit against Chase for this deceptive practice.

As everyone else has noted...I too feel that I am a victim of Chase. I have ALWAYS paid my balance on time and even pay extra. But this is the reason I believe that Chase has made the decision to place a ludicrous $10 monthly charge on me. People like I that took advantage of their great APR and made extra payments do not make Chase money. Only do credit card companies make money when you don't pay on time or have a high APR. Therefore they think they can make up for it by charging an additional $10 per month. They are just waiting for those good customers to default...The supervisor I spoke to said that it was because I only had a transfer balance that I was affected by this new charge b/c they were not making money. WHY MUST I PAY FOR THEIR BAD DECICTION TO MAIL ME THE GREAT OFFER OF 2.99??? I held up my end of the bargain why cant they? And what makes them think that they can try to tell me that I can avoid the $10 if I change to 7.99 APR; do they really think I'm that stupid not to know that my monthly finance charge you be more than the $10 if I were to change?

I have good credit and always paid on time, usually more than minimum. So, Their reason for the high rate? Maintaining profitability on [my] account. I called in to the number listed 1-800-436-7927 on Wednesday 01/21/2009. I was told that this amount is for monthly service, beginning this year 2009. First, I had never been informed for the service charge will be applied to this account, starting this year 2009. Second, if there is going to have a service charge, this service charge should be applied only if there is any new transaction or purchase using this account starting this year. This service charge could not be applied to the old transaction that had been in the account since a long time ago. The current balance in this account is from some transferring balance that I did awhile back ago. When I agreed with Chase for transferring this transaction, there was nothing about service charge? mentioned at that time. Therefore, base on the initial agreement between me and Chase for this transaction, it is illegal to charge me for this monthly service amount. I called in two times, and requested the representatives to have a direct talk to their supervisor, but I was rejected. Both times, I was told that their supervisor was busy. And I was never been called back to resolve this issue. Sincerely,

When we opened the next bill, we were shocked to see that no payment was posted. We called immediately and jumped through all the hoops to make it right. The rep we spoke with said that since this was the first 'late' payment, our APR would be reinstated. We took her at her word, and waited to receive a letter she said would be coming to confirm the reset. No letter ever arrived. A week ago we called again, to see what was happening with our 'reset'. We were told by another rep that the previous APR was reinstated and it would show up on the next billing statement. NOPE! It arrived with a 10.24%, much higher than what we were told. Called again. Another rep said that our previous APR was never reinstated, and was not likely to be. LIES!! Also, on the statement appeared the 'missing' December payment. It was posted on January 10, 2009--a month after the bill was sent. We believe that our payment was held up at Chase, just to create the illusion of a late payment and to generate more income for themselves. Can't prove a thing, though!! Suspicious and unethical--absolutely!! Legal--not sure!! We've never been late on a single payment and have always paid more than the minimum due. We are in the process of transferring our balance to another company. These kinds of situations deserve more scrutiny by someone with the knowledge and guts to pursue it. This isn't right, and these kinds of problems are happening to so many people. But what can be done?????

I have been a Chase card holder for about ten years. During this time I had a master card as well as my current visa card. I received several offers from them during these years for very attractive rates, which I took advantage of without any problems. After I paid off my master card, I left it open with a 0 balance on it. I receive an offer on my chase visa for a 3.99% life of the loan balance transfer or deposit the checks into my checking acccount and use them as a personal loan to myself. I took advantage of this offer because I was opening a business and this was a much better rate than my bank could offer. I have been paying on this account for more than fours years and have not been late or in default. They have lowered my line of credit several times and closed my master card account about a year ago. Chase was not the only credit card company that I utilized in financing my business venture. There are 3 others who all have low interest life of the loan rates.
I received my statement for January and noticed an increase in the amount of my payment which amounted to a $300.00/mo increase plus, a $10.00/mo maintenance fee which was being charge to my account at the rate of 27.24% I called to inquire about this and was given the following explanation. Due to the current financial crisis, chase felt it necessary to review all the accounts of card holders who had low interest rates for the life of the loan that were under the 5.99% rate. I expressed my displeasure at this action, and stated that due to my current personal situation (health) I was unemployed and this was beyond my means. They indicated that it was within their right to change the terms at any time; it was stated in their agreement and I should have read it. I was so mad that I threaten to pay them at the rate of $5.00 per month, at least I was making an attempt to pay. At this point, I was advised that if I did not send the required payment due, my account would go into default status of 29.00% and they would take legal action to collect the amount due.I hung up very angry. I tried to get an answer as how to resolve this problem and did I have any legal rights to hold them to the original agreement. No-one could provide me with an answer. Time was growing short before my payment was due. I called back to see if there was something else that could be done. I was given the choice of going to a higher interest rate 7.99% that would be locked in for 2 years (Jan 2011) then it would adjust; also maintain my current monthly 2% payment and eliminate the $10.00/mo maintenance fee, or I could keep the 3.99% rate with a 5% payment and retain the $10.00/mo maintenance fee. The choice was mine. When I explained that my other credit card companies had not done this why were they? They said that they could not speak for them, but they were being mandated by the federal government to take this action. I've tried to search out other companies who are still offering the low life of the loan rate and there are several that are listed on the web. However, I am not able to move the balance. I am not looking to open another account to go further in debt, all I want to do is move this balance from chase and close my account for good. IHope that there is a company out there that would be willing to take my balance at a low life of the loan rate. and provide the same offer to other chase card holder as well Speaking for myself, I would like to know if there is an attorney who would be interested in starting a class action law suit. I am sure that others would show the same interest

So they told me I can get the 2% back, but it will now be at a 7.99% rate instead of the 3.99% until the balance is paid. How can they do this? Is this even legal? A $10 per month finance fee (stated as a FINANCE FEE in Chase's written change in terms notice) and my minimum payment will increase to 5% of the balance amount monthly. As I had transferred a large balance, my monthly payment would now be $1,000 a month. When I called Chase they tried to bait and switch me to accepting 7.99% finance charges but I could keep the 2% min. balance payment with no $10/month finance fee. I declined. I asked if ALL Chase card members were getting the $10/month fee billed to them and Ms. Sherry Belanger stated, only the ones that make balance transfers! I have been paying it off every month sometimes more than the minimum amount and I have managed to get it down to $16,000.00.

I have one at 3.99% and one at 5.99% intrest with a balance. I have been paying on this for 3 year on the first one and transfered more at the 5.99 rate in Aug. I was paying 800.00 a month because I could and just incase we ran into trouble then i wouldn't have a high balance and could make a lower payment. Now they raised my payment to 876.00 per month plus ten dollar a month for the card. We have another card with them that my daughter has a car payment on. The payment on it is 483.00 but if they raise hers it will be over 1200.00 per month and there is no way she could pay that. If we have to take over her payments that would make our payment over 2000.00 dollars per month. Right now we pay 1200.00 per month.

In 2004 I became a Chase credit card customer when they offered me 2.99% fixed apr for the life of the loan. This month, they have included a $10.00 monthly service charge and their reason was, "due to the economic situation, we are applying this charge to ensure a reasonable turn around rate." Never in my 5 years as a cardholder was I late or over the limit. My husband has been laid off since November as a heavy equipment operator and we have two small children. No matter how hard our financial situation has become, we always sacrifice to pay our bills on time, and we never buy anything beyond our means. I am outraged that my diligence in sending in a timely payment for the past five years is not even appreciated by my credit card company. I want my voice to be heard. I am angry and sick to my stomach that my good credit history means nothing anymore. It is not my fault that the credit card companies are in this pathetic situation, and I am unjustly penalized for being a member in good standing. I want to fight this charge and I need your help. Ihave pursued fighting this outrageous behavior all the way up to JP Morgan Chases executive suite in New York. All with no luck. I have e mail President Obama's Public liason team about this disgusting form of extortion and racketeering. I have contacted the Comptroller of the Currency Chase's regulator. It was there that i found out that fixed rate doesnot mean fixed rate. I believe if there isn't a class action lawsuit what about a RICO lawsuit due to the bait a switch tactics they are using and the fact that they have used the US postal service and the internet to effectuate this scam. I would like a lawyer to answer the following question: When I agreed to take these balance transfers I asked specificly if the advertised balance was fixed until it was paid off and if the minimum payment percentage would change as long as I was never late? the answer to both questions was yes. I am not an attorney but as a financial professional when one adds additional charges and calls it a finance charge is not that a change in my interest rate? please count me in on any class action lawsuit. my minimum payments in total went from $535.00 to $1339.00 for this month.

In times of economic hardship, Chase bank has raised their required payments from 2% to 5% with an added $10.00 a month service charge. This has over doubled many families' payments in very difficult times. Plus there is a very deceptive bait and switch tactic they are using. These are people who never made a late payment, have excellent credit, and have been customers in some cases for 20 plus years. To make matters worse their customer service is just malicious. When my aunt, who was terminally ill with brain and lung cancer, called to see if she could have her payments and/or interest reduced since she could no longer work, the service rep. asked her if she received food stamps at which my aunt replied yes, she was on assistance for the first time in her life for her condition. The rep. then said, "Well I suggest you take those food stamps, buy stuff to make cookies, and then sell the cookies to make your Chase bill." My aunt asked to be transferred to her supervisor at which time the rep hung up. The debacles continue with this company when my husband and I tried to pay off the balance of a credit card after the sale of our first house. We are both teachers and accumulated this debt in college, both being first generational college students we had no outside financial help and relied on the credit card, but things got bad when Chase ran credit checks and raised our interest rate, not because of our relationship with them, but because we were a "credit risk" since with our student loans and house payment our debt to credit ratio was not ideal. They raise the interest to 29.99% just below the legal limit. So needless to say, we were excited when we had the opportunity to pay them off and close the account. We called chase and asked for a payoff quote, we paid by phone. We did this with two other credit cards, they gave us a payoff, we paid, we closed the account, end of business. Oh but not with Chase. They said the account was closed and we went on with life. Three months later we ran a credit check to purchase a new house, to our horror Chase had added an imaginary $17.00 service fee after the account was paid off and confirmed closed. The fee accrued late payments and interest and was up to $288.00 in three months. We called to fight the fee, they said we understand just pay the original $17.00 and some additional payment fees totaling $58.00 and we will fix the credit score. This was holding us up from purchasing our new home, so we agreed. My husband called two days later to make sure the account was for sure closed and there was another $4.00 finance charge fee on the account. So again my husband called begging just to end this thing, give what the pay off quote was with all fees and interest so we could move on with our lives. They promised it was $4.00, he paid over the phone. We have received two notices in the mail confirming the close of the account and a zero balance. Two days ago, I open the mail and Chase is charging us a $1.00 finance charge fee (a nightmare I can't wake up out of). I also notice there is an interest charge of 40.43% on the statement (illegal). I call and the supervisor says it is not $1.00 but 12 cents but they can not charge less than a dollar, so the interest equal 40.43% but it is not that interest rate they just have to charge at least a dollar. After became combative and threatened a law suit, he said he was removing the charge right at the moment. So my husband calls the next day and guess what? It is still there gathering interest. We have talked to 5 people about this, everyone says they are taking care of it and yet it is never resolved. I still don’t know if the issue is resolved. I am waiting for another statement fearfully. In the meantime, we are stuck and unable to progress in buying a home, we have spent countless hours trying to clear up this mess on our credit, including taking a day off of work, and we have spent the equivalent of two tanks of gas or a week of groceries in imaginary fees. If their practice is not illegal, it is certainly unethical. I urge you to look at the complaint section of Consumer Affairs, there are several complaints placed everyday. This is people's livelihoods we are talking about. A bank that received money from our tax dollars to stay afloat should be more kind to its customers. They have bit the hand that feeds them and I am biting back. Several people are urging for a class action lawsuit, I know more would join but we need to get the word out about these "fat cats" and their deplorable practices. I teach my students that they have a right to be heard and that it is our responsibility as citizens to challenge unfair treatment. Something must be done so they can not prey off us further.

Much the same as everyone else who has written in this blog, I recently noticed that Chase has added a $10.00 monthly finance fee (which cannot be paid off monthly). This fee is added to the balance in the form a finance charge on a purchase while no purchase exists. This,in and of itself, should be illegal. Then.....I was told that my minimum payment would increase from 2% to 5% of my balance.
Well, everyone here agrees that there needs to be a class action suit against Chase. Yes, I agree as well. However, this will take years. Chase is certainly guilty of fraud......but, much worse than that, I believe that they are guilty of treason. Chase and companies like Chase are the reason that this country is going down the tubes. The corporate greed is unbelievable. Is it possible that Chase is being run by a bunch of financial terrorists? Let's face it, by its actions, Chase will be ruining the lives of many, many people. Some will be forced to take food out of the mouths of their children in order to pay the minimum balance which has more than doubled, others will be forced into bankruptcy, while others will probably have to dip into their retirement accounts in order to make these monthly payments. At a time when our government is trying to find ways to improve our economy and to help homeowners stay in their homes, I can't believe that it would allow Chase to perpetrate such a horrific fraud on its customers. Unfortunately, by the time our government acts to do anything about this, the damage will already have been done. I know that the high-powered, high-earning executives and managers at Chase feel that they will not be injured by this, but I am sure that they couldn't be more wrong. As poverty and bankruptcy and homelessness increase in this once great country of ours, so will the crime as people become desperate. These executives will not be able to insulate themselves from the world that they are creating. In the short term, however, they will simply be damaging their own company as those who have the means will probably pay off these credit cards and Chase will lose the interest income that it had coming from those customers on a regular basis...... and those who were struggling and hovering near the brink of bankrutcy will certainly be pushed over the edge by these new terms.

The account has a fixed interest rate of 3.99% and 4.99%, and I have never been late with a payment. I also have always paid something more than the minimum due. I have had this credit card since 1992. The reward? My minimum payment jumped from $330 a month to $787 a month, and I am being charged a $10 a month service fee to maintain the privilege of paying 5% per month. I always read the inserts that come with credit cards pretty carefully and NEVER saw a notice that this was about to happen. I have two other Chase credit cards with somewhat lower balances, and if they also reset at these higher minimum payments, I will soon be making monthly payments to Chase of $1668 for the three cards. It's pretty clear that Chase is trying to force consumers into default, so they can reset their accounts at 27% interest. When I called the company about the new minimum payment, I was offered a chance to refinance the balance at 7.99% interest until 2011, with a 2% minimum payment. I didn't cause the banking crisis, and as a taxpayer I am helping to bail Chase out. But clearly I will not be doing ANY consumer spending for quite some time, and once I have cashed in all my savings to keep up with these astronomical repayments, I will have nothing left for retirement except the 401K that these financial geniuses have also screwed up. What worries me most is that if I can keep the cards in good standing with a 5% minimum payment, is there anything to prevent Chase from raising the minimum payment to 7% or 10% or whatever else they want to charge? And which Congress do we have to thank for their ability to do whatever they please?

Knowing I had not missed a payment I scrolled down the statement to find an additional $10.00 service charge tacked on, in addition to the increased minimum. I immediately picked up the phone and called the customer service line. I was informed that in November all Chase customers were sent a letter informing them of the increase in the minimum payments.
I never recieved this statement nor did my parents who also have Chase cards. I was then informed that this was due to people taking advantage of the low interest until payed off promotion, and the customers were dragging out the payments. At this point I became a bit enraged as CHASE offerd this deal to it's customers, I, and others, took use of it and are now being punished for it. I have NEVER missed a payment, I was NOT sent a letter informing me of this change and now I have to make up for their screwup ?? Why again were the banks given bailout money from the gov't just so they can turn around and alter the terms of their offer to the customers? During this conversation I was informed that I could accept a 7.99 rate, at the 2% interest fee, and have the 10.00 monthly charge dropped. This to me is borderline extortion. What these tactics will in the end do, id customers like myself will not be able to afford the higher minimum payment as OUR work i sslowing due to the economy which is directly due to the banking system. Chases customers will either defualt on the card payments or even worse for the economy will start to file for bankruptcy. These tactics MUST BE STOPPED before they snowball into a much larger issue.

They enforce the terms and illegally change the agreement and they try to ruin people livelyhood to satisfy their greed.

I too received a notice in the mail today that my interest rate was being adjusted to an outrageous rate. I too have always been a good customer - this is as bad or worse than the mortgage companies and their ARM loans!!! It's no wonder everything is going to hell in a hand basket! I am closing my account-I refuse to be treated like this and they don't deserve my business!!!

I am in the same boat as those complaints that follow.
My minimum payment went from $138 last month (Dec 08) to $339 this month. My options per the Chase rep I spoke with: (1)agree that my rate will go from 4.99 fixed to 7.99 to maintain a minimum payment of 2% of the balance. (2)pay a $10 per month service fee and have my minimum payment move from 2% of the balance to 5%...or (3) pay my card off within 30 and close the account. I was part of a class action suit in 2000 against Advanta National Bank, USA. In that case a 'guaranteed' rate of 9.99 jumped to 19.99. The result was Advanta lost and was fined $7 million, in addition, had to refund all monies collected using their NEW rate.

I, too, have the fixed until payed in full 4.99 rate with Chase Card Services. Last month (Dec. 08), my minimum payment was $138.00. This month, $339.00. I called customer service and it was explained to me that my credit card agreement has changed. New terms: to remain with the 4.99 rate, I will be charged a $10 per month service fee and my minimum payment will be 5% of the card balance versus its previous 2%. My options are: for my minimum payment to remain at 2% of the balance, my NEW RATE will be 7.99%. Additional option: pay the balance in full within 30 days and close the account.
Much the same happened in 2000 with Advanta National Bank, USA. I was given 9.99 rate, fixed until paid. Shortly after, they raised the rate to 19.99. I became part of a class action suit that cost them a $7 million fine, and reimbursement of all monies they had collected using their NEW rate. Many thanks guys for that 'guaranteed fixed rate.'

We hold a credit card with Chase Bank, which was previously acquired as a BankOne card. We have excellent credit and utilized a 3.99% life-of-the-loan interest rate on this card. Our latest statement indicates changes were made to our cardholder agreement as follows: Our minimum payment of approximately $386.00 was increased to $916.00!! A monthly service charge of $10.00 is being added and that is accumulating an interest rate of 9.99%. Per customer service (2 calls made on two separate days), there is no opt-out option other than to accept changing our current 3.99% life-of-the-loan rate to a 7.99% rate until the year 2011. Then I guess the sky is the limit for them!! This had absolutely nothing to do with our credit-worthiness - I was told it was due to economic conditions.

i received a notice from Chase within the last week advising that they would be changing rates and that i had the option to opt out. I misplaced the notice so called Chase customer service and was told that the notice was sent in December. I know for a fact that i had just received the notice in the week of January 12th. I advised I did not have the notice in front of me, as I had misplaced it but that I remember it had the option of opting out. I have been with Chase for at least 6 or 7 years with no late payments, etc. I actually have two Chase cards, one with a very low balance and this one in particular with about $6000 on it. We do not use the one with the higher balance and just pay on it every month. We got it for 4.99 interest rate for the life of the debt, and with no annual fee. I was told I could opt out but that would close the acct and I would have to pay the entire balance w/i 30 days, which is not an option for me. I also could go to 7.99 interest rate, or I would automatically go to $10 fee each month and from 2% to 5% payment increase, which would make my payment around $310 per month, when it had been aprx $120. I certainly do not have an extra $190 a month to pay or I would have been paying the card down in the first place. I think it is unethical and possibly criminal that Chase is allowed to treat it's customers this way.

All of a sudden Chase decides to raise the minium payment to 5.45% of my balance making my payment jump from 134.00 a month to 393.00 with little notice. They kept the 2.9% interest. Raised the default rate to 29.9% and started charging a 10.00 a month fee which is subject to the 29.9 % interest. This is the wrong thing to do to people right now! This type of action needs to be stopped. This can devastate our economy even further and ruin peoples credit and lifetyles. I have always paid my bill 2 weeks in advance and have great credit history. This is an outrage!!!Dont make innocent people whom were not victiums of the sub- prime mortgage now have to suffer the consequences of bad decisions that others have made.

Chase Credit Cards instituted a $10/monthly fee and increased the minimum monthly payment to 5% of the balance from 2%. This increased minimum monthly payments from $200 range to over $525. I have the original offer from them which induced me to initiate the transfer that guaranteed the fixed rate (2.99% and no other fees)for the life of the original transfer with minimum monthly payments calculated on 2% of the monthly balance. I pay monthly online and have never been late, missed a payment, or paid less than was due. They never notified me until I received the monthly billing statement. I called customer service and talked to Adrian and when I told her that I had never been notified she said I should have and that she would send me a change in terms notification. She also said accept the new terms or pay off the entire balance immediately.

I am writing to make a complaint against Chase credit card services. I received an offer for a balance transfer for a 3.99% interest rate for the entire life of the balance transfer with a 2% minimum payment due. I took advantage of that offer and transferred $11,000 in August of 2008. I was charged a $199.00 fee to do this. My minimum payments were a little over $200.00 a month. When I received my last statement, they raised the minimum payment to $483.00 a month plus a $10.00 a month service fee. My balance right now is $9674.00. When I spoke with them, they said they sent me a change of terms? in November! They said that they could change the terms whenever they wanted and I had two options. The first option is to pay the balance in full within 30 days and close the account. The other option is to for them to change the interest rate to 7.99% until January of 2011. I tried to explain to them how unfair I thought this was and they just kept giving me rehearsed answers about how bad the economy was and that what they were doing was legal. I tried to explain to them that it may be legal but it was not ethical or moral. I have good credit and would never had transferred the balance in August if I knew they were going to change the terms in November. I cant understand how the government can help the credit card companies and then in turn the credit card companies try to put the consumer into bankruptcy. When I asked them if the 7.99% was a firm offer, they said they could also change that at any time. So even if I agreed to that, they could impose other fees anytime they wanted to. I really think that something needs to be done about this and I am asking for your help.

Unfortunately I work for Chase here in Phoenix. I too agree that they are a horrible company, but in these times I need the job. My suggestion to everyone, file your complaints with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. These are the guys that actually scare Chase and can force them to change their practices. I work for the company and will not EVER own a Chase credit card. Enough said. Again contact the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency...

This is retroactive interest on my existing balance. I have never been one day late and have used appx 1/2 of credit limit. They do offer an opt out which will keep my intrest rate at 7.99 but I have to close my account. By closing the account a ding goes on my credit score. I called Chase but they could not speak with me about it because the accounts have not been transfered to Chase however my opt out deadline is Feb. 20,09. This is a Catch 22. If I could speak with Chase prior to Feb 20th I could perhaps negoiate with them to keep my present rate but Chase will not be able to discuss the account until March 04,09. I was offered over the phone in 2006 to move my credit card debt to Chase at 3.99% fixed for the life of the loan. I did so and have made every payment on time. I received my Jan statement and my payment went from $512 to $1215 (2%-5%) and a ten dollar service fee. My wife called Chase and the rep said they added the service fee because we weren't using the card and Chase wasn't making any money on us.This service charge is at 9.99% which raises my overall rate. Since all payments go to the existing balance this service fee amounts to about $15 per month.I wasn't happy about this and called myself a few days later. I was told I could opt out of the increase and was transfered to another dept. Here they told me the previous person I talked to was new and there was no opt out. they said I needed to do it by 12/31 and was sent a letter to this effect. I never got a letter!I then spoke to a supervisor that told me it was too late and I couldn't do anything. I waited a couple days and called again. This time I was told I could pay it off in full -fat chance ($24,000)- or I could go back to my $500 per month payment if I agreed to a new rate of 7.99%. This doubled my interest so they would get extra money on the interest charges. They also said that by raising my payments they were helping me pay my loan faster. I don't need there help with that. I need my rate to go back to tha 3.99 without a service charge. I want them to honor their contract. After all when I was struggling I didn't call them and say I was going to cut my payments in half.If there is a Class action suit I want in. I have also sent letters to NYS Attorney General and Consumer Protection Board. I think we should all send an e mail to Barak Obama at WhiteHouse.gov and tell him to stop giving money to the banks. They are not out to help anyone!!!!!!
