I like my Toyota Prius most of the time but the headlights and brake lights tend to go out frequently. It is a pain to have to frequently get them changed and in my busy schedule, often times, it's hard to find time to get it done. It's an extra expense and makes driving at night unsafe. Also, the air conditioner is noisy. But other than that, it gets great gas mileage and dependent. I'm a college student so it's a great way to save money. It's small and compact so it's easy to park just about anywhere and really comfortable to drive.

I'm generally happy about the 2010 Prius' fuel efficiency. Despite the car's unimpressive digital fuel readings, I fill up my tank about once a month for around $15 at $2.29/gal on average. I'd never before gotten a month's worth of daily driving out of a tank of gas. And the car is solid--unlike other vehicles that shook on the highway with strong winds, the Prius is stable. It's also a reasonably comfortable drive for a small-to-medium sedan. I had a 2004 Honda CRV before and HATED the tiny driver's space. I don't feel cramped in the Prius.

My major gripe with the Prius is the propensity for things to go wrong with all the fancy electronics. One of my windows has stopped working--and of course there's no way to manually raise/lower it. The climate control system turns off and on on its own. Then it started switching modes independently as I'm driving. Today, it stopped turning off or responding to other manual input methods. The Bluetooth audio/stereo system is finicky--it works with some applications and not others. Still others, it STARTS working with them then just stops mid stream.

I'm always terrified about the next electrical component that will give out. And the Green-Driving mode has never worked in the car, regardless of climate or other conditions. Too bad, as I'd hope to use the electric motor for slow parking lot driving. No luck. I used to be a loyal BMW driver 'til the cost of gas just overwhelmed me. My biggest complaint about that fun drive was the unreliable electrical systems. Now I've switched to Toyota and am finding the same thing. It's disappointing. Even so, for the fuel efficiency, the Prius has been worth it to me.

The Prius itself is a pretty good car. I purchased it for my teenage daughter thinking it would be a safe, economical car for her to use. So far it has been; although it does go through tires fairly quickly. That said, I will never purchase another Toyota because of their Toyota Financial Services department. They have been nothing short of a nightmare and ruin the entire Toyota experience.

Very comfortable, big enough to haul what I need in the back or with the seats folded down, so quiet, and I can go great distances on only a 10 gal tank! I love the opportunity to finally have an eco-friendly auto!

The newer models' design makes it very difficult to access the console storage area. Also, they do not have the cup holders for the back seats like the earlier models did. Toyota Prius (2007): Most would think this an "old car", not worth the bother. But, my car was so far advanced in the "bells and whistles" especially in the technology that even most new cars as of 2018 still haven't caught up! My Prius doesn't have some really great things like parking and lane assist or automatic braking to avoid collision but it has a rear camera and GPS as well.

When I bought my Toyota Prius C one year ago I did not know what a hybrid car was and had held off getting an "electric" car because where I live the issue of charging was worrisome. I am the first among my friends to own a hybrid car. We talk about the Prius all the time. I bought mine through AAA Car Buying Program. The agent said the battery made by Toyota, it's guarantee and performance is the best available. It is an amazing machine. True savings in the cost of gasoline. My only annoyance is the number of buttons and devices that all new cars seem to believe consumers want. I have a "dumb" phone and I wish they made "dumb" [basic] cars instead of bringing out "all new" models every year which is unnecessary and wasteful of resources. Thumbs way up to Toyota and its Prius line.

It had a 10 gallon tank and could travel 375 miles on a tank of gas. I lived the in mountains and it just hugged the road on the sometimes challenging curves. In 2014 I traded it in for another new Prius. Love all the new safety features. The hatchback makes it so easy for traveling with my 100 lb dog or loading groceries or plants from the nursery. Last Christmas we packed it with all of our family's gifts, our luggage and my husband's golf clubs with room to spare to travel 4 hours up north. The seats are so very comfortable for long trips. The noise inside the car when going down the highway although I did hear that has been improved upon. The other is the height of the car. In 2008 I opted to buy a brand new Prius 1.5 instead of a Mercedes and or BMW which most colleagues own. I boasted about my Prius for all these years until the past 3 months the VSC and Alert lights randomly displays. In November 2017 upon checking at a local fuel station we discovered a pint of oil short. Almost every month since there is a pint short that the fuel attendant reports on which had to be topped up using proper Toyota Oil. In my family and amongst friends we owned a few Toyotas ranging from Corollas and Tazz with mileage running to about 400 000 km without an engine problem.

All services on my Prius are carried out by the Toyota dealership in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa and the car is still in perfect nick condition. The last service was done at 140 000 km in August 2017. Since August 2017 - This car has not done about 4 trips of 200 km as a long trip otherwise is used daily for work and home average 30 km a day. Over the past 2 months I have taken it to the dealership twice – the first time they informed me that they cleaned out the sludge sump and reset the management system. Last week the VSC and Alert lights came on and I complained that it still takes oil – They reported that their management diagnoses reveals that 2 cells on the hybrid battery are low.

I argued that it has nothing to do with oil consumption. We topped up the oil and the VSC and Alert lights are gone off. I read on the websites recondition hybrid batteries are also available as Toyota Agents require $2000 to supply and fit a brand new one – do you have any information on this. I am confused really that at 143 000 km it is consuming oil and regarding the hybrid battery – it seems a guessing game.

My husband just bought a 2018 Prius 2 for me. I knew he was doing this but I should have checked it out before he signed on the dotted line. I had a 2011 Prius, which I loved. I know the Prius 2 is the "budget" model so a bunch of the bells and whistles aren't even an option. But, my biggest concern is with the huge amount of highly reflective surface on the dashboard. Driving the new car to work for the first time this morning and I was constantly distracted by the sunlight gleaming off the shiny black surface of the dashboard (not the display). To me, the style of seat with the small interior section and sloped edges is also very uncomfortable. I will have to add some sort of filler in the middle so that I don't get leg cramps. There are a few other complaints but most people (even me) would think it's a bit petty. Overall, the vehicle drives well. I would have opted for a different set of options over some of the extra beeps and safety improvements in this model.

Our 2013 Prius V with 128k miles has been maintained meticulously and has provided a drama free commuting experience since new. However it made a strange vibration and noise on startup the other day and then the check engine light came on so it was brought in to the local dealership. The shop called me a few hours later with the bad news... blown head gasket which would cost $4500+ to fix. As we didn’t want to buy a new car at this point we had the work done. I did some research and found this to be a relatively common problem with the Prius at about 130k miles and Toyota doesn’t want to admit it. Oh well. Our next car will likely not be a Toyota.

I just sold a 2008 Prius with 113,000 miles that I bought 4 years ago with 75,000 miles. Toyota did a couple recalls on it for no charge when I first got it. I replaced a belt on it and an MFD which went down. Autobeyours repaired the mfd for about $275 and it was easy to do myself using his youtube video. I changed the oil and CVT fluid myself so this was a very inexpensive car to keep. I averaged about 44 mpg over the years. I was planning on keeping it but a 2012 Prius five with all the options became available at a great price and I was able to sell the 2008 for a very good price. Get your Prius checked out at a dealer as they can save you from buying someone else's lemon. Really the best car I've ever had in regards to reliability and gas mileage. The high voltage batteries last from 12-15 years. My wife has a 2014 Three with nav that is also trouble free.

My brother drives a 2007 with no issues. I don't know anyone who has had trouble with their Prius. EV Battery Center in Las Vegas can install a new battery for $2350. It has a one year warranty but don't be fooled, as it will last another 12-15 years if you keep the car that long. Don't fall for a rebuilt battery as they fail more often than not. No Toyota mechanics I know (several) recommend going this route. Just Google this if you don't believe me. Very comfortable car that just works well for cheap. Priusdiy.com is a great site to learn to do your own maintenance and I used it to learn how to change the spark plugs and other maintenance. Avoid a rebuilts Prius as they tend to have very expensive issues that cost megabucks to diagnose and repair. If you don't take a Prius to a dealer for an inspection, at least take it to a reputable auto body shop who can tell you if the car has been in a wreck.

These cars are made to last and will save you money, but you do have to do your due diligence to get a good one that has been taken care of. Most horror stories on this site are due to people who did not do their homework and bought another person's problem. My dealer charges about $150 for an inspection and it will be the best money you will ever spend as it will give you peace of mind and/or save you from buying someone else's can of worms. I highly recommend this car.

I bought a used 2006 Toyota Prius October 2016 with about 66000 miles, my daughter drove it back and forth to school daily and now has 73000 miles and all of a sudden the dashboard started displaying safety error codes (ABS, VSC, Brake, tire warning blinking constantly). Took the car to Toyota dealer for service and paid $128.99 for electronic diagnostic checks to determine cause of failed sensors, they informed me that ABS actuator had failed and all braking safety features have been disabled and cost of repair would be $3200.

I was really upset when the service guys could not explain why it happened and they do not see this ever happens at such low mileage, then more upset about the cost of repair when I heard this figure especially when I was told this happened at no fault of our own and they were surprised to see the ABS actuator and all braking safety features failing at such low mileage (73000 miles). Then I spoke with their service manager and he was sympathetic and suggested that I call Toyota Customer Service and see if they can warranty the repair.

I called 800 GO Toyota and spoke with customer service rep Shawn and he apologized for this happening and routed me to another rep who he said can get a resolution for my complaint, he then told me that extended support program for Prius ABS Actuator (10 years/ 150,000 mile) had expired on 09/2016 and nothing he or Toyota could do to help me and no one else would be able to further assist me, and it is up to me as to what to do with the vehicle knowing that it is very unsafe to drive with safety feature disabled. I told him the car has 1/2 of the miles the extended warranty covers and this is a legit safety concern that Toyota should consider but he then replied, "I can only speculate that driver before you might have had bad braking habits and affected the safety features to fail."

I then told him if that is the case you will see most of Toyota cars on the road failing and this would be irrelevant speculation on your part. I am very disappointed in owning an unsafe to drive vehicle at such low mileage especially with Toyota reputation of safety. All I want as a first time Toyota car owner is to get this car safely back on road without jeopardizing my daughter's life or safety while driving it. Toyota Case # **.

I've put over 80k miles on this car and it looks brand new. It looks great and has never let me down. I was worried it would feel plastic, but I was wrong. People teased me about "handling hills" in a Prius. It was never an issue. I've always been proud to drive the car and pass people driving up steep hills. It's not a sports car but that's not what I paid for. It's cute, reliable, and stays clean with minimal effort on my part. I've spilled red Gatorade inside and it cleaned up without skipping a beat. Not only was the car inexpensive but cheap to drive and to maintain. It's the perfect car for a commuter. I've driven mine cross country both ways 3x, with no issues.

The acceleration & mobility when turning in offroad areas is very impressive. I think the car is very attractive & I bought this choice mainly based off looks. This is the kind of car I'd feel confident driving around town and showing off. There are many interior features of the car that I do appreciate highly but I'm not happy with how well it holds up. The battery may be dropping juice so I will have to get that replaced but the engine is running just fine. Haven't replaced anything yet. Not very stylish but it suits my needs well. There is enough room to put what I need in it. But the shell of the car is a joke to look at, odd shape. Battery cost is through the roof so I'm not too happy about that. I had the Prius the first year that it came out in the US. As a result there were some glitches, but they were all repaired without cost to me. I drove the car 180,000 miles before the battery needed replacement. The gasoline engine was solid as was the electric. Performance was exceptional except when climbing for considerable miles with a level patch. This caused the electric engine to lose its charge and I had to run on the gasoline engine up two steep passes in particular, the climb from Salt Lake City to Summit Park and the climb out of Las Vegas going southwest. As a result the car was going about 50 when I reached the top.

The 2001 Prius had a silver paint job that was OK. It has clean first year appearance with basic lines not too dramatic. I did have one rust out on the driver's side door. Value was excellent at about $22,000 and I get 50 miles per gallon in the city always and about 35-40 MPG on the highway. The fuel cost was low and gas prices were considerably higher. Fuel cost per month for me at about $3 per gallon and 1000 miles was $60. Other maintenance was minimal for the first five years.

Lots of space for shopping and gets amazing miles to the gallon. Its great looks give it a unique style next to other cars its size. So many colors to pick from not like others that only come in a few colors. You can really express yourself with this car. The price of these cars are just great and they are so worth it. The cars engine is so quiet. It's very relaxing and enjoyable to drive this car. It's one of the most gas efficient car out there and the engine also has enough horsepower to drive like other conventional vehicle. When I just brought the car, one tank of gas which cost 25 dollars is enough for me to drive from Mountain View to Las Vegas without having to stop and refill gas in the middle. Its engine is very reliable too as it has never break down or fail to start since the time I brought it which is three years ago. The exterior can be improve as there is nothing fancy or special with the design. However the interior is very advanced. It has a bigger space inside than you thought when you look at it from outside. Although it is slightly more expensive than other non hybrid car, the gas saving overall can make up the gap and may even more economically viable in the long run.

I bought my 2007 Prius new. It has performed flawlessly for nearly 10 years and 100,000 miles. A few weeks ago it failed to start -- lots of warning lights on the dash. It turned out to have a couple of inches of water in the battery well in the boot (trunk). A quick Google search revealed a design flaw that opens up a small crack just near the rear hatch hinges aft of the roof rack gutter trim. The car has paid for the 'hybrid premium.' The UK tax saving and fuel efficiency have easily mitigated the additional purchase cost. And, when I bought the car, I took the view that I was investing in green technology development and knew that I was taking a risk.

Overall I am very happy with my 2007 Prius. With some sealant, rust treatment and a few hours of my time, hopefully I can effect a fix (work in progress) that will allow me to get another few years' out of the car. If not, I am happy that I have played my (small) part in creating a slightly lower carbon world. We have an 17 year old Porsche Boxster in the family that has served the same time for us and is going strong at 11600 miles. It represents nearly as good value for money (low capital depreciation, etc.), but it is doing nothing new to invest in in the future of the Earth.

The Prius lives on on the street and the bodywork had begun to rust, a little -- this is not unusual in the UK. But then again, I have not been very kind to the car -- washed infrequently, rarely waxed, etc. All in all it has been a great car. It is just a little disappointing that a panel weld/design defect appears to be the age limiting feature. Then again, I'll see if I can fix it and get another 50-100k miles from the car. I'd be interested in any other experiences of water ingress into the boot (trunk) and battery well. Happy motoring!

I have 3 Toyota Prius. A 2004, 2005 and 2008. The 2004 and 2005 have had the same problem in that the dash lights go out. When this happens you cannot open the rear hatch unless you turn the car off which is another problem. I am a mail carrier and use both cars on the mail route to save gas. It makes it hard to get packages out of the back especially around the holidays when we are overloaded. The lights not coming on affect whether it is time to fill up with gas or not, the mileage to the next oil change as the odometer stops working and never resets if and when the lights decide to come back on. I have run out of gas because of this.

When the lights come back on it still reads what it did before the lights went off and that could have been days before. There is no reason that I can determine why the lights work sometime and sometime they don't. It happens when you turn the car on. The lights are either on or off. They never come on or go off when the car is running only when it is turned on. I have had the 2004 checked at the Toyota dealership. No answers. That car has 269,000 miles, but the 2005 only has 112,000 miles. Not to mention you don't know how fast you are going. The other screen works continuously. Therefore the temp controls and the audio controls are not affected. The information such as the outside temperature and the mile/gas consumption do not work.

I have owned 2 Prius. I had a 2012 Toyota Prius C Two and currently drive a 2013 Toyota Prius Four. About the C and why I don't have it anymore...The C is a great car for the price. I averaged 48 mpg over the 35k miles I had the car. I did have one accident where another person rear ended me and it cost about $8k for insurance to fix. My only complaints with the C were cabin noise was pretty terrible, the dash started rattling at about 10k miles, and the rear visibility could be better. I typically drove without the headrests but obviously with passengers this is not an option. I originally bought the C because it was affordable to me at the time I needed a new car and I wanted a Prius.

Why I traded for the regular Prius...I traded in 2016 for a 2012 used Prius Four with similar mileage to my C. I wanted the larger cargo space, less road noise, more options, and better MPGs. This car in 2012 new would have cost me 10k more than the C. I have had no issues with the car and can only talk highly of Toyota and the Prius lineup. If you are concerned about reviews you read here...please look up the definition of voluntary response bias. Online reviews are extremely biased towards the negative because people that have issues want to tell everyone. (Not a bad thing). Those that are happy tend to not be as vocal. Happens a lot with car forums especially.

If a Prius is damaged...yes the costs to repair may be greater than a conventional car. The high tech components in the Prius are not cheap to make and the entire system is quite unique and fine tuned. Also the location of different systems may cause the Prius to be considered totalled more easily (front collision). Of all the hybrids I have owned (3 now) I have never ever replaced the brakes because I use the regenerative braking almost exclusively when driving. I do this by leaving excessive distance in front (so I have plenty of time to respond to speed changes ahead) and looking far ahead for reasons traffic will slow such as stop signs, red lights, construction, etc. I brake so far in advance sometimes I never actually stop completely because traffic ahead is already moving.

If you want better MPGs out of your car...look up hypermiling. Also keep your tire pressure at spec, put low rolling resistance tires on, and don't smash the gas. My average so far in the Prius Four is 49 mpg and that includes mostly highway driving. When I am stuck in stop and go traffic my average for the trip is typically about 70+ mpg with AC on. I have recommended the Prius to others both the C and the liftback (standard Prius). If my Prius got totalled tomorrow I would happily buy another one. They are great cars that are quite versatile and have amazing fuel economy (especially if you try for it).

I hate the ** SEATS: they are horrible. One they are hard to sit on. If I take over 30 min ride, it's a nightmare. Two, so tight the my hamstrings are always giving me problems and my gluts are always tight which affect my lower back. Three, the way the ** seat and headrest are the worse... The worst. Badly designed that it's causing me neck problem and lower back problems too.

If any of you guys in sales, delivery, or any trade that requires you to be on the road and your Prius seat is giving you back or neck problems please post it here and let's get an attorney. I am happy with my purchase. But I have few issue with this 2016 model. First, model TWO doesn't come with a garage door opener, which is a very very basic option and it would not cost more than $5 for the manufacturer, and almost every car has this option as standard. It is very DISAPPOINTING to carry a garage opener for 2 locations in my pocket all day. Second, the sun visor does NOT extend, so if you are taller than 4' and move your seat back the visor will not help. Such a pity that they couldn't have the same type of visor that they have in the Camry, which extends back. Again, another simple, and very cheap improvement which they could have done.

Third, hand rest of the left side is very far out and you can't rest your left hand while driving, nor you can grab the wheel on the bottom center to rest your arm. If you drive more than 30 mins your arms will get tired by holding the wheel. Fourth, your rear view is obscured by the hatchback section of the trunk, which is annoying, and does not gives you a clear view of your cars behind you. I just had the car for few days. I Will post more once I have more driving time.

I am looking for feedback on the 2016 PRIUS. My 70-year old parents purchase one about 2 months ago and they have been involved in two very serious situations. One incident occurred on the freeway and one on a large highway. Once my mom was driving and the other time my father was driving. Incidents less than a month apart. THE CAR JUST STOPPED! Decelerated from 60-65 miles per hour to stopped in less than a minute and an alarm came on. After stopping they put the hazards on. Had to hit park and start all over again and it took off. The first incident they thought was a fluke and that they had done something so they did something wrong since car was new. NOW both are afraid to drive it. Has anyone else experienced this type of problem?

Recently after shopping the hybrid battery system check light came on in my 2011 Prius. I immediately took it to the dealer where I purchased it. They found that a bottle of window cleaner had spilled onto the hybrid system and damaged the cooling fan. Fortunately they were able to dry out the battery and I only had to replace the damaged cooling fan. This is concerning because the I always put my shopping into the back of the vehicle and never would have thought that fluid would be able to get to the hybrid system. I am writing a letter to Toyota so that this problem can be addressed and not happen to anyone else.

Let me start by saying I have loved my Prius 2010. I can fit anything in that car... even my kayak! I get great gas mileage and commute 80 miles to work and back. I take it on trips (gas mileage not as good in the mountains). So I do a lot of open miles on my car... as of this writing I have 154,000. It has been unbelievably quiet and a smooth ride. BUT I AM SPENDING A FORTUNE ON BRAKES!

I have been a great driver for many many years and owned a lot of used vehicles; this is my first new car. I have always driven a lot to work and brakes usually last me 5 years. For the Prius, I replaced the front and back brakes in 3/2012 and again in 2/2014. The back breaks in 11/2015 and now the dealership told me both need replacing AGAIN! (6-2016). I have replaced the headlamps twice but that now seems like a cheap repair. The AC compressor has a hole in it I am now told and this will cost me over 2,0000! I want to cry right now. This estimate is now over 4,000!!! Is anyone else having this problem? I am at a loss as to what to do.

My 2013 Prius wants to go 8 MPH all the time. With the foot off the gas, anytime the car is on, it will start up on its own. If you are decelerating, it will get to 8 MPH and then add engine power to stay at 8. The dealer says this is normal. I think it is dangerous and annoying. If I am at a stoplight, I have to keep jamming on the brake to avoid lurching into the car in front of me. It also seems to waste gas. Because when I apply the brake, to get below 8MPH, the "energy display" shows that engine power is still being applied, meaning that the car is fighting my attempt to stop. I am afraid of inadvertently hitting someone due to this problem, and I think Toyota should be sued because of it.

This was my first Toyota. I always heard of Toyota's going at least 300k miles before any major problems. I wish I saw this website before I bought this used 2007 Prius with 83k miles on it, probably would of gone with a gas powered Honda Civic instead. I am getting about 47.8 mpg average which seems good, but they claim 60 in city and 51 on highway so I would think I would average about 55.5? I have been having the dreaded headlamp problems already. Have been pulled over by the police for headlights and have only had the car about two weeks. I pull over for the police and they inform me about the one headlight out. I get out to check on that and both headlamps are on. Now the one side goes out and you turn them off and they light back up. Some folks are saying the ballast or the bulbs. I never saw a car that was so difficult to put in new bulbs for the headlights and that may not fix the problem.

Some of the prices I am seeing to fix the Prius are just astounding. I have an old 2004 Ford Taurus with 245k miles and never had any problems with it so far. Am I lucky or is the 2004 Taurus just reliable transportation at 23 mpg. I see there was a recall on this headlamp problems but it has expired. When you hear the stories of both headlamps going out that is definitely a safety concern and I do a lot of night driving. I also have this slight knocking noise on the passenger side front you can hear going slow over a dirt driveway or slow on a bumpy country road. Could be struts maybe or sway bars or steering gear? Whatever a car with 83k miles should not being making that sound on one side. The older corollas never had any of these type of problems. Agree with the seating ergonomics are quite terrible in the 2007 Prius. When I sit back into the 2007 Taurus it's like ahhh... so comfy for long distances.

I would like to believe that Toyota makes some decent cars but I guess it was not the Prius. I will post again about this 2007 Prius, I am keeping my fingers crossed that I can fix these two issues and have many more carefree miles before something else happens and it costs a boatload of money to fix. I am 60 years old and have had many cars in my lifetime, mostly domestic cars and never had many problems with them. I trying to give Toyota a chance but after reading many of these posts I just don't know? The worst car I ever had was a Fiat 850 Spyder. Nice name but a nightmare of problems.

I wish to respond directly to: Jabir of Ogdensburg, NJ on Sept. 9, 2015 who wrote this: "My hybrid battery stays low and engine keeps revving as if I'm accelerating all the time, even on deceleration. Anyone else has that problem?" Here is my response to that:

YES! mine too. It just starts revving for no reason. (This brings me to another topic. This car needs an RPM gauge, a TEMP gauge, and I mean engine temperature, not indoor/outdoor temps for the fan, and also an engine oil gauge, although using the dipstick periodically does suffice for that). Sorry to digress, let's get back on the main point. The engine revs. It's weird behavior, but maybe it's designed that way, to charge the battery or something. So I won't fault this too much. But now I present problem #2. My engine, especially in B mode (engine braking, i.e. downshift into low gear) will sometimes (it's not always) make a rattling sound. I brought the vehicle to the dealership for repair, but they said they can do nothing since the problem is not reproducible (it's random).

That noise, rattling or grinding, kinda hard to describe it, just a loud engine basically, which is definitely different sound than the normal engine which I have been driving for 10s of thousands of miles (currently at 30k miles in my 2014 brand new Prius) so this sound sucks. I hate it, and I am pretty sure it's not normal. Waiting to break down. Ryan. Peace out. Oh yeah, maybe I will mention my avg MPG since everyone else is (I heard numbers 40-52 was the highest, so far). Well my MPG is avg 38 but I made adjustment (started using ECO mode always) and now I get 40-41 MPG. So I don't know how people are breaking into the 50s. Also I coast in Neutral whenever possible. It should save the engine, and maybe improves MPG, although I do realize Neutral will not charge the battery. (Engine must be engaged for charging to occur).

2012 Prius 4 & 2010 Prius 3 & 2007 Prius 2 were ALL electrically inept where we'd been exposed to life threatening defects. 1st car was eventually bought back so it looked like a fluke until discovering other people died from these defects! That car appeared 'possessed' & dismantling, it was the only remedy that Toyota really had! We bought another Prius that seemed to be a solution, White one on a commercial but that one started failing when the entire computer system required replacement. It got worse when seats turned mushy from seat heater module defect & interior's fabric was falling apart.

So we received a fake "Authorized Factory Sale" voucher to trade it on a "qualified" replacement from a dealer who didn't have to honor it after switching the loan from our customary Credit Union over to their predatory lender instead. We were stuck with an extra $8333 on the loan by them not honoring this initial deal. Then that car's problems began with higher mileage as on the other two w/ intermittent airbag light illuminated-computer screen flickers-heated seat module

& PUSH BUTTON NOT TURNING VEHICLE OFF. That defect killed 13 people but it was not recalled - as it's NOT REPAIRABLE!!

Our car experiences were disastrously disappointing to say the least! My daughter was terrified to ride in the front seat as we had NO IDEA when and if the airbags would deploy unexpectedly! We were not notified of recalls then saw them on National News Programs & Good AM America! When you come across internet articles & see your exact car on tv it's Despicable! We had to purchase another used car to have reliable transportation as the lender auctioned the vehicle to an unsuspecting person after we warned them. We'd been in the process of having an independent expert examine the car for buy-back again. This car caused what physicians referred to as "Prius PTSD" with physical symptoms such as migraines & nose bleeds from so many years of repeated stress!

My new Prius has nearly 15K miles and overall I like it so far. It has decent power and handling, good gas mileage, no major maintenance issues, has been very reliable transportation and deserves five stars. The low use engine and transmission design, infrequent friction braking, keyless entry and ignition, all make me expect (hope) that significant maintenance will be infrequent. I particularly like being able to start the car on electric power without spending a few minutes warming up a cold engine. And the idea of the keyless entry is great, saving me time when my hands are full of kids or groceries, but I am concerned about security issues described below. And I like the way the floor mats lock down.

That said, I have some gripes as follows: The a/c condenser in the car is starting to smell AWFUL! In the summer heat I was always leaving the a/c on and the vent on recirculate. After reading a few articles on the internet from others with similar problems, I now turn off the a/c and set the vent to outside air a few minutes before parking. This has helped a lot, but not completely removed the smell. I never had this problem in my Honda. Neighbors are reporting people breaking into Prius using a microwave amplifier. I asked the local dealer about preventative measures and possible recall and they had no idea what I was talking about.

The average MPG over the 12,000 miles I've driven so far is 43. Not as high as I had hoped. I wish I'd bought a darker color interior to hide dirt better. I had a long trip (7 hours) hauling equipment slightly too long for the trunk, so I tied the hatchback door down with equipment sticking out the back. I kept the windows open to prevent any exhaust fumes from accumulating. Nevertheless there was an EXTREMELY ANNOYING WARNING BEEP throughout the 7 hour drive, which was not easily disabled. So I had to wear earplugs throughout the drive to tolerate the constant beeping. My Honda hatchback never used to beep when driving with lumber sticking out and the hatch up or tied down.

The reflective sun cover, from the dealer, has a piece of velcro to tie it closed when it is all rolled up. This velcro keeps adhering to the dashboard cover, also from the dealer. When the velcro is adhered, and I remove the sun cover, it lifts the dashboard cover right off the dashboard and it takes me three minutes to straighten and put everything back in place. These accessories were not engineered to work well together.

The owners manual talks only about RECEIVING a jumpstart does not CLEARLY AND EXPLICITLY say whether the Prius can GIVE a jumpstart. If the prius 12V supply cannot give a jumpstart please SAY SO CLEARLY. When I called the dealer the people I spoke with were not sure. If it is a design limitation that is fine just TELL ME CLEARLY. They dont make mud flaps/guards for this car. The dealer says it would interfere with the aerodynamics.

Let me begin by saying that no car is perfect, so in spite of the benefits, this car does have its rotten eggs in the basket too. Now, I have owned a 2013 Prius brand new for a few years, and I would highly recommend this car for occasional leisurely driving. But if you are a kind of person who likes to take long trips, this car is not the holiday car as the Toyota manufacturers have erred in the ergonomics of the driver side. That being said, this car drives beautifully, gives excellent gas mileage and comes with a range of features equipped to quench your thirst for technology.

As far as maintenance goes, about 13,000 miles, this car has given me no trouble since I am a smooth driver and take care of my engine. I do not think any car is perfect, and that at one point or another, all cars start giving trouble. However, the Prius maintenance costs outweigh their non-hybrid counterparts and therefore it is important to keep in mind to maintain your vehicle every six months by rotating tires, keeping all fluid levels in check and changing the oil once every year or every 5000 miles.

Read the manual, take care of your car and it will take care of the ride. One major drawback for this car is the lack of comfort in driving. So if you do not have a strong lower back, this car is not for you. You need to keep yourself fit to drive this car. This is where Toyota needs to address the problem of ergonomics, but all in all this is a fantastic vehicle that should last many many years.

We've been told the right rear wheel bearing is bad and will have to be replaced at the cost of $587! We've owned several Prius, a Camry, a Corolla, and a Four Runner putting high miles (we have 250+ thousand miles on our Corolla and never had any problems) but we've never had a bearing go bad on any of these Toyotas.

I've called Customer Service since this is really low mileage for such a problem. They have issued a claim to Warranty assistance, and I was told they would call me back in 1-4 days. We'll see... We had considered trading a car in for the new Rav4 Hybrid, but I'm really wondering about Toyota's quality control. Our 2009 Prius lost a cylinder that had to be replaced at 30,000 miles, but at least that was under the warranty. Maybe that should have been a warning to us. We've already had to replace lights which I see as another issue.

Prius 2012 - The navigation screen shattered using a finger to move the clumsy map program around. The cost to replace the whole unit is $9,558 at the dealer. Adding sale tax the total cost is $10,155.37. It is one third the cost of the whole car! The navigation system is a clumsy and more or less useless system, it was not something we ordered special and we were not impressed with it from the start. Now we are really unimpressed with the whole vehicle. I can buy at least 15 iphone 6's with that money...what is Toyota thinking. I will never buy a Toyota again.

My dealer agrees tires should last longer than 38,000 miles. The dealer tells me I have no warranty! I have to buy new tires. A new car with tires should last more than 40,000 miles. It's a great car with rotten tires! I have spoken with other Prius owners with similar stories. My dealer will help with new tires, not yo too tires!

Initial problem on 2007 Prius was that first one, then both headlights blinked off while I was driving. They would go back on if I switched them off and back on, but the first time it happened on the freeway at night, it was frightening. The dealer replaced them with what I hoped was an improved lamp but the same thing happened a few years later, post-warranty, and I paid about $500 to have it fixed. Today (May 31, 2015), while driving on a curved 35mph road, the car spontaneously shifted out of gear into neutral, rolled to a stop on an uphill stretch, and would not shift out of neutral. This was a spot with no shoulder; luckily, I was able to roll back to a wider spot for safety (?!).

I don't like to think about this happening in the left lane of a freeway or in remote areas where I sometimes work without cell reception. Apparently, there are any instances of this quirk (as evidenced by this site, carcomplaints.com, and proud chat rooms) but no recall has been issued. I find this surprising and frankly, unconscionable. Toyota? Oh TOYOTA??! I thought we were friends.

We bought our Prius from my wife's sister. It had less than 30,000 miles on it. We now have around 90,000 on it. It gets 45 mpg in the winter and 52 mpg in better weather. We started having the brake problem we have been reading about around six months ago. The brakes would stop working normally and we have nearly had accidents while getting to a repair shop. After several resets to the system and it failing again and again we decided we had to have it repaired if we wanted to keep it. We decided to use a repair shop that only works on Toyotas because of the ridiculously high price Toyota charges for repairs. The technicians at the shop we chose receive the same technical information daily that the Toyota places do. They ran the diagnostics and decided to replace the ECM to the tune of 1800 dollars! Toyota wanted 2400 dollars!

We also discussed the possibility of the brake stroke sensor being the problem. After very thoroughly checking the sensor out we decided not to replace it. The car worked for about three months and it started having the same problems again. It will reset itself if you shut the car off and restart it. This car is unsafe! We don't know what to do with it. If I could afford it I would have it crushed and buy a Honda. We have a 2005 CRV and we have never had it into the shop. Toyota should be ashamed of itself. This car should be recalled or the government should shut Toyota down until they get their act together and fix all of these problems I read about!

I bought my 2008 Toyota Prius brand new and have taken care of it all along. At the 115,000 oil change I was told there was 1/2 a quart of oil in the engine and it needs the rings replaced for $2,600. I bought the 100,000 mile extended warranty and up until the 115,000 oil change my oil level was just fine. In doing a little internet digging I found a lot of Prius owners complaining about oil usage problems. The dealer even said there is a ring problem for some engines made between 2007-2011. I even found a Class Action suit under way for some models but not the engine itself. I plan to make as much noise as I can until Toyota recalls these crappy engines!

After religiously maintaining the car after 100K miles the car alarms start to light up erratically so I brought it in for a check. They said it's a battery issue which I replaced but at the same time there was a recall for the electric motor cooling system which they fixed. After it was repaired I noticed that the car had no power or hard to accelerate above 70-80 mph. The car would rev higher than normal.

Keep in mind, I used Royal Purple 5w-30 synthetic after the break in which is supposedly the best oil out there but after the service I noticed that I needed higher revs to increase speed. So I decided to check the oil level which to my surprise it was almost not noticeable on the dipstick (No Alarm). Keep in mind, before this issue I have never had to fill and add oil in between oil changes. The engine visually wasn't leaking oil anywhere.

Since I couldn't find any issue I brought it to the Toyota dealer which they found out that I needed a new catalytic due to the power loss and plugging of the converter. They didn't even have an explanation on why this happened. Plus they wanted charge me $2200.00 for the converter and labor (INSANE). I took it upon myself to purchase a used catalytic ($300) and installed it myself which work out for the best. The car runs better but still has oil consumption issues. I did notice that the original converter had whitish pebbles that plugged the converter. Hoping this is not an engine ceramic issue which I believe Toyota needs to deal with.

Who designs a car that requires major deconstruction (removal of the entire front end and bumper) to access a known regular maintenance issue like changing a headlamp? And why does the end user bare the cost of a clear design flaw? Replacing a headlamp should NOT cost $400! I have had to replace my headlamps every 24 to 32 thousand miles! Unbelievable! When I get upset at the dealer where I bought my car and have it serviced, they say "it's not us, it's Toyota Corp!" This is not a new issue, and there have been class action suits that Toyota settled, yet they fail to address the basic problem they DESIGNED into the car. After extensive research we found out that the issues I've been having with my car were under an extended warranty that Toyota did not repair when the car was under warranty. It's a manufacturing defect and a safety issue. It's unfortunate that such a large corporation is willing to risk this and their liability. It's undeniable that the main advantage of owning a Prius is for the fuel efficiency, but I'm beginning to see there are more disadvantages to owning a hybrid vehicle. Many of us know the controversy of the Prius being an environmentally friendly vehicle. Prior to buying my second generation Prius, I did my research and know that the vehicle production is more energy-intensive and results in higher production emissions than conventional vehicles, but this is offset by the Prius's lifetime carbon emissions. However, I did not anticipate the amount of repairs and the frequency of them.

I knew that the hybrid battery was an inevitable expense when I purchased the Prius. I was relieved to find out that there are alternatives to the estimated $4,000 battery replacement. Often times one or two of the cells are bad in the battery, which does not warrant a brand new battery - just a replacement of the cells. It's unfortunate that Toyota does not offer such a repair given that the production of hybrid batteries require much more energy than producing a standard car battery and results in higher emission levels of gases like sulfur oxide. Also, the production of the battery relies on rare earth elements often coming from China who ignore the environmental safeguards during the mining process like removing topsoil and using acids that enter the groundwater.

The production and the disposal of the hybrid batteries have given the Prius a bad reputation. Fortunately in 2010 Toyota launched a battery recycling program which may offset the carbon footprint, but it does not offset the expense and waste of creating a new battery. This does not seem like an environmentally friendly solution to me.

It seems to me that Toyota's strategy is to put you in a new Prius, but buying a new car does not resolve anything - again not very "environmentally friendly". Hybrid cars require more energy to produce than conventional cars, emitting more greenhouse gases and burning more fossil fuels during the manufacturing process. The production of hybrid batteries, in particular, requires much more energy than producing a standard car battery and results in higher emission levels of gases like sulfur oxide.

These more efficient technologies of hybrids often have higher upfront costs because the additional technological element and electric components in them seem to create more issues to fix and more difficult to work on them independently. Toyota has a monopoly over hybrid parts and services for these vehicles making them much more expensive for repairs because they are newer technologies and basically have to amortize development costs over a smaller number of units produced. For example, the cost to replace the center multifunction display on the Prius runs anywhere from $1,500-4,000!

Since my car turned 150,000 years I have had to replace the Hybrid battery with an estimated cost of approx. $4,000 and the 12 Volt Battery with an estimated cost of approx. $450. Now I have a proposed estimate of $3,660.26 to fix the combination meter and the brake actuator which seems to be a manufacture defect and is out of its extended warranty. The total cost of repairs for this would cost: $8,110!!! (This is not considering the annual maintenance and costs for expected wear-and-tear on vehicles over its lifetime.)

The cost to repair a Prius is absurd. It's cheaper to buy a used Prius, so it's no wonder that most people opt to buy a new vehicle. It's unfortunate that we live in a generation where we think that everything is disposable and not repairable. I think we are going to continue to see more issues as we move to more technologically advanced vehicles in the future and these issues are not going to be cheap or easy to fix. I have always loved Toyota for the longevity and integrity of their vehicles, but I have to say I am quite disappointed by their inability to uphold to their mission "To attract and attain customers with high-valued products and services and the most satisfying ownership experience in America."

I am happy with the way our Prius has performed but very unhappy with the body. The body started rusting badly after 5 years (before then I could address it with some touch up paint). The back lift gate mechanism melted (the rubber part); it was a costly repair. After I had it repaired, the entire panel fell off. I have it duct taped on because I don't want to spend another $450 to replace it. The horn squeaks when I press on the brake often. The dealer says he's never heard of it and hasn't a clue. The dealers should take responsibility for these problems, even if the car is past warranty. They are clearly manufacturer errors. I'm very very disappointed and won't buy another Prius. Wish they had put the same energy into the body that they put into the engine.

I have had my Prius since 2009 (and we are a Toyota family with two 2009 Priuses and a Highlander), but this is the first year I've lived where there's snow. We put Blizzak snow tires on the car which definitely helped, but we've been having major issues with the traction control. On my way to work, the traction control initiated over 5 times, and one of them was on a slight incline and the car literally stalled in traffic because when it initiates it cuts power to the gas and the wheels and there's nothing you can do but wait until the car decides it's over. My husband then took it to work, and had a worse time with it (his drive is only 6 miles from home to his office and completely flat). He experienced it 6+ times on that short drive (!!) and one of them almost caused an accident when it cut power at a traffic light mid intersection and the cars behind him almost rear ended him. It's completely unsafe how over reactive the traction control is.

We got on the phone with Toyota Corporate to tell them the scary experiences we both had. We are newly married, in our 30's and simply cannot afford a new car right now - so that seemed like the only option. To their credit, they were very prompt in calling us back, but they basically told us there's nothing they can do. That I needed to take it to a dealer and they would need to recreate the issue before they could do anything about it. SO I waited until a snow day (today) and just rode with a technician while he drove my car. The traction control initiated 3 times (we're on the east of Denver, so no hills unfortunately) and he said that's normal - that's the way it is designed. Which we all know is a complete design flaw. They are running more tests on it, but they've basically told me that it looks completely normal, it's designed to cut power and even apply breaks to the wheels like that, and there's no solve for it.

I feel unbelievably frustrated that I have a car that stalls on the slightest inclines IN TRAFFIC and puts my life in danger when driving to work. And Toyota won't do a thing about it. I know I'm not alone either after reading Consumer Affairs reports (THANK YOU). There's sites all over the web that I found that report this same problem in 2009 Priuses. So this is me continuing that conversation - it seems like all I can do right now is to document everything because I am terrified it's going to cause a wreck. And I want to 100% make it known that this issue is NOT safe.

I was a big fan of Toyota because of their reliability, safety, and comfort all this time. I have owned Corolla and Camry and now Sienna and Prius, very proudly. I have never got into an accident where I have been at fault, until the Prius brakes just froze on me yesterday. There were no mitigating circumstances, the weather was fine, there was no rain, I was 15 miles from home and had driven the Prius for more than 15 miles at that point and braked several times and the car was warm.

This driver brakes in front of me on 495 (Beltway) and I apply brakes normally and nothing happens, it seemed like the brake pedal didn't want to move, it felt as if it was against metal. I am 6'1" and 185 lbs, I had my full force against that brake pedal but there was negligent amount of deceleration. Needless to say, I got into a fender bender. The same evening (yesterday), I took it to Koons Tysons Toyota for looking into that matter. Guess what?? They didn't find anything, probable cause: additional rubber mat!!!!!!! I have tested my Prius braking the same way at different speeds, every time it braked fine.

I had taken the car in for another brake behavior the previous year/s which I noticed, and other drivers agree. While driving at a moderate speed, on a bumpy road, when you apply brakes lightly, the brakes car will 'give-in' before catching on again. I think it could be due to the transition between the fly wheel and the actual braking system. Although that gives a feeling of insecurity, the situation was manageable. This recent incident and how it was handled has now made me rethink my decision to stick to Toyota for so long despite the issues it has had. I always thought that these things happened to someone else, in this case, it happened to me. What if my family was there with me? What if it happened on a highway in mountains? What if...?? I will look into getting rid of it ASAP and getting a Honda/BMW/Merc/Acura for safety reasons. Good bye Toyota. You just lost a very big fan and customer. Then 6 months later it did it again (even after a new battery). Then it happen a year ago October. And guess what, it's October and I just was checking things and it's low again and not holding the right charge.. So only a matter of days. But I now keep a jump box in my car (Not ideal for a 2009 car)... Now to a real serious issue, I've always had issues with one headlight going out since I purchased the car. Was told "oh well don't see any issues." Well it's because it would only happen at times. Then about a year ago it started to flicker really bad... Now I drove home yesterday and both damn lights are out... Issue is that 2001-2009 were involved in class action lawsuit. When taken to the dealer, I was told that the entire liftgate assembly would need to be replaced at my expense, even though I purchased the Platinum extended warranty from Toyota. I decided to put off spending the $422 to repair the assembly. Two months later the entire trim piece that is connected to the liftgate handle came loose and made it impossible to open or close my liftgate. I returned to the dealer and opted to spend the $422. After checking Prius forums online, I find that this is a common problem with the 2nd generation Prius.

This is obviously a design flaw that affects the safety of the driver. If you cannot open the rear hatch, how are you going to change a tire if it goes flat? Toyota should be made to recall the Prius for this defect. I purchased my first Toyota with this Prius because family members praised their Toyotas for having 200,000+ miles on them. My Prius has 82,000 miles and I see the writing on the wall. In the last 6 months, this vehicle has been in the shop for repairs no less than 3 times. Not to mention, the gas mileage that I use to get with this vehicle has decreased by at least 20% since the vehicle turned 70,000 miles. This will be my first and last Toyota.

I have a 2013 Prius C. My light is cracked and I was not in an accident, so I called Toyota Care and was told to go to a service center to have it inspected and have the issue put on file. The car was taken to the dealer the week before and they were told about the cracked tail light and the issue was ignored, they did not put the issue on file. I took the car again and was told to bring the car on a later day because the manager was not in. Toyota Care and the service center have not been helpful. I have a warranty and so far nothing. I have read on online forums about people who have had similar cracked light issues and their issues have been resolved.

I have a 2007 Prius with 116,000 K on the clock. I have had 7 years of trouble-free motoring. Until it developed a flushing noise after breaking. My garage tells me that it is the brake actuator which is ready to fail. The cost to repair this is a staggering 4,100! It appears that the cost of the part is 3,500. From reading other reports it would seem to me that Toyota Prius parts are overpriced. The only explanation is that this is a deliberate scam on the part of Toyota. I will never buy Toyota Prius again.

I bought this car used after it was totaled by the insurance company because the left side body panels had all been damaged from sliding into a guard rail after an ice storm. It had 18K on it when I bought it in the spring of 2011 and I have proceeded to drive it 182,000 miles so far with no issues. I don't know why everyone isn't driving a hybrid with the price of gas these days.

Our 2004 Prius suddenly, after sitting for some 3 months unused, ran rough and would not make it out of our driveway. Dash lights flickered and flashed all sorts of warning lights. Called tow truck and had towed to nearest dealer some 80 miles away. They contacted me several days later saying the computer next to main battery pack was bad and heavy corrosion was found around buss works terminating on batteries. They also found a rodent nest at site but also listed that corrosion was due to salt air and water infiltration? My insurance carrier refused to cover it under my comprehensive coverage since the damage was determined to be from salt water intrusion?? Some $1800 later I got the car back. Forget Comprehensive insurance, a joke. You pay dearly for the coverage yet between the adjuster and the dealer the rodent urine wasn't the cause??? Just how does the salt water cause this problem and the mice urine didn't have any effects??

Both front wheel bearings failed and both rear coil springs fractured over a period of about 40K miles.

4 recalls, not one official notification from Toyota. Took pressure for Toyota to handle. Now, the AC evaporator doesn't work--$3000 estimate to repair. I am hoping that Toyota will respond.

I bought my 2012 Toyota Prius C2 brand new. I have been very happy - has 35k miles on it. Only problem I have had was just this week - all my brake lights came on, my doors would not lock (with the lock on the door or with the key fob), and the display system would show the doors were open when they were not. The dealership I purchased the car from has been wonderful - took it in the next morning, they figured out the computer system went back, and a new computer system was replaced the next day (all under warranty...thankfully I purchased the extended warranty). I do not believe that a 2 y.o. car should of had a computer system gone bad so quickly, but overall I am very happy with my car. I do not get the 53MPG that was on the sticker in the winter, but I am told that it's because of the winter blend gas that is given to us on the east coast.

Apparently all cars have lower MPG with the winter blend gas. Driving 50+ miles round trip for work this car does everything I need it to do and saves me the money I need it to on gas. Spending $21k on the car I was not expecting BMW quality interior cloth/leather. I just needed a vehicle to get me from point A to point B. This car does it and I have been given several compliments on how nice my car looks (an added and unnecessary bonus in my book). I am very happy with it and have not experienced any issues except for the computer system. When my children are older I will need to buy a bigger car, but for now this is exactly what I need and saving my family of 5 the money I knew it would. Very pleased customer.

Nail magnets! My tires at 34 thousand ran out, had to have two replaced prior. I can't understand Toyota require "W" tires on a Prius V wagon? They are high performance and cost more with less mileage and you generally will not get the full mileage.

Something similar happened to me. I was exiting off hwy and went over the line on left side (yes, this was bad driving I am fully aware) and went over the "slow down" bumps/grooves. I braked and nothing happened. Bumped all the way off road (honestly, I am not sure when the brakes did not respond but, at some point they did not) and then had to make a sharp right swerve to miss cars stopping in front of me. Crossed all lines on right side and ran almost head on into the barrier. Had my 2 kids in car. Car was totaled. Air bags deployed. We were stranded facing wrong way at night around a blind curve on the ramp.

I really did not understand what happened after I went over the slow bumps/grooves and why the car (or me) did not response well since everything happened too fast but, after reading more about the brake issue, it explains why the car did not slow down when I braked. I loved that Prius but, not sure I want to take that risk again. I thank the person that stopped and risked his life to direct cars away from me at top of ramp until Police arrived and the couple that stayed with me and my family to help with our nerves.
