Rivian extended warranty availability and options

Rivian, introduced in 2021, is an automobile brand that features several upscale, fully electric sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks. Rivian vehicles come with a generous factory warranty that offers up to 4 years/50,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage and 8 years/150,000 miles of battery and drivetrain coverage.

Due to its fully electric makeup, maintenance and repairs work a little differently for Rivian R1T and R1S vehicles. Many vehicle issues can be solved remotely using the company’s diagnostic technology and software updates. Still, there’s greater potential for larger issues as Rivians age, just like with hybrid or gas-powered cars.

Rivian is currently working on rolling out its Rivian Care program, which serves as its extended warranty. It’s only available in a few states currently, but that’s expected to change over the next few years.

Rivian Care pilot programs: VCS and PVP

Currently, Rivian Care is only available in Georgia, Maine, Minnesota, New York, South Carolina and Texas. Rivian Care boasts two coverage types: Vehicle Service Contract (VSC) and Preferred Vehicle Protection (PVP).

The Rivian Care VSC offers coverage extensions from 120,000 to 150,000 miles. It’s considered a manufacturer’s extended warranty, but it’s actually offered through Assurant, which is a third-party warranty company. Covered parts and systems may include the following, though this shouldn’t be considered an exhaustive list:

    • Battery
    • Brakes
    • Drive system
    • Electric motor
    • Heating and A/C
    • Infotainment
    • Navigation system
    • On-board computer
    • Suspension

Rivian’s PVP plan is a unique offering meant to cover cosmetic issues like scratches and dings, which are not typically covered under warranty for most automobile makers. These two extended warranty plans can be purchased together or separately.

    Rivian third-party extended warranty

XCare and EV-Assure are the two most popular third-party warranty options for Rivian owners. XCare offers premium protection that covers major systems in your Rivian and a battery and drive unit option that covers only the battery (which is both a common and pricey repair in Rivians) and drive unit.

EV-Assure is another electric vehicle-focused third-party warranty that covers your Rivian’s major mechanical and electrical systems, as well as EV-specific features like the battery, charging components and electric system.

Standard perks offered by both of these EV-specific third-party warranty companies include roadside assistance and rental reimbursement. Often, a third-party warranty is a more affordable option, making these very popular among Rivian and Tesla owners.

Rivian extended warranty cost and value

Because both the Rivian brand and its extended warranty offering are so new, it’s difficult to find accurate extended warranty cost information online. We searched forums like Reddit and Facebook for actual user input and found the following price ranges:

Is a Rivian extended warranty worth the cost?

Comparing the average cost of a Rivian extended warranty to the cost of repairs that can occur as your vehicle ages is a good way to decide whether an extended warranty is right for you. Below, we’ve listed a few common Rivian repairs and their average costs:

    • Battery replacement: $500 to $800
    • Air suspension components: $500 to $2,000-plus
    • Charging system: $1,000-plus
    • Infotainment screens: $400 to $1,000-plus

If you plan to keep your Rivian for longer than 60,000 miles, the Rivian Care or a third-party warranty can give you peace of mind in the event you face major repairs on your R1T or R1S.

    Rivian warranty coverage and exclusions

Rivian's factory comprehensive warranty covers your new vehicle for 4 years/50,000 miles, whichever comes first. For additional coverage, the brand’s battery and drive system warranty coverage mirrors a powertrain warranty, covering the battery, drive system and electric motor for 8 years/150,000 miles.

Common exclusions to Rivian’s warranty include normal wear and tear, maintenance services and cosmetic damage.
