Ram doesn’t directly offer extended warranties. Instead, the official, manufacturer-backed extended car warranty coverage is provided through Mopar Vehicle Protection (MVP) plans. As the official parts supplier for Ram, Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge, Mopar offers authentic factory-backed service contracts that extend protection beyond the factory warranty.

“Senior citizens in particular should seriously consider such coverage,” said Michael Ouziel, consumer protection attorney and lead trial attorney at MMO Law, APC. “Most retirees are on a fixed income and, therefore, are ill-equipped to handle high unexpected costs.”

You can find three coverage levels: Maximum Care, Added Care Plus and Powertrain Care.

Maximum Care

If you want near bumper-to-bumper protection, you’ll want to go with Maximum Care. Maximum Care covers over 5,000 components, including electrical systems, high-tech features, steering, suspension, climate control and more.

Added Care Plus

This plan is specifically designed for powertrain components and provides coverage for high-performance parts.

Ram 3500 factory warranty vs. extended

The Ram 3500 factory warranty covers various aspects of your vehicle. Here are the main components:

• Basic Limited Warranty. Covers most components like electrical systems and HVAC for 3 years or 36,000 miles.
• Powertrain Limited Warranty. Covers engine, transmission and drivetrain for five years or 60,000 miles.
• Rust-Through Coverage. Covers body panels, including doors, hood and trunk rust perforation for five years or unlimited miles.
• Roadside Assistance. Covers towing, lockout service and fuel delivery for five years or 60,000 miles.

Though the Ram 3500 factory warranty gives you solid protection early on, it doesn’t last forever. Once you cross the 60,000-mile limit, you'll have to pay out of pocket for repairs. So if you plan to keep the truck long-term or drive high mileage, it’s worth adding an extended warranty alongside your factory warranty to protect your truck’s major systems once that coverage runs out.

Ram 3500 diesel coverage and exclusions

Diesel-specific problems, such as fuel injector failures, DEF system issues and turbocharger problems, can be more expensive to repair. That’s why diesel engines in Ram 3500 trucks often have extended coverage.

Cummins and turbocharger coverage

Issues such as EGR cooler failures, turbocharger problems and fuel system issues are more common in diesel engines. So if you’re driving a Ram 3500 diesel, the Cummins engine is covered under the Powertrain Limited Warranty, which provides five years or 100,000 miles of coverage specifically for diesel engines.

Emissions and DEF system coverage

Diesel trucks also come with a more complicated emissions setup, including the DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) system, EGR valve and diesel particulate filter. In other words, warranties are typically only valid if you can prove the failure wasn't due to lack of maintenance, so make sure to keep records to protect the value of your warranty. “This doesn't mean that you need to take it to the dealer for all service, but even if you do your own maintenance, you need to document when you did it, and keep copies of receipts for fluids, filters and other service parts,” said Michael Satterfield, automotive writer and former president of the Texas Motor Press Association.
