What is Montway Auto Transport?

Montway Auto Transport is a licensed auto transport broker that connects customers with a nationwide network of vetted carriers to ship vehicles safely and efficiently. Rather than operating its own fleet, Montway coordinates logistics, pricing and carrier selection on behalf of customers. The company offers both open and enclosed transport options across all 50 states.

Montway manages the scheduling and communication throughout the shipping process and provides insurance coverage as part of the service, helping streamline vehicle transport from pickup to delivery.

How does Montway Auto Transport work?

Montway Auto Transport works in an easy three-step process: quote and book, vehicle pickup and vehicle delivery.

  1. Quote and book: Customers must choose what type of transportation they prefer, enclosed or open trailer, to receive a free instant online quote from one of the company’s 40,000-plus vetted and insured professional carriers. No upfront payment is required until your vehicle is assigned to a carrier.
  2. Vehicle pickup: Upon booking your order, Montway’s logistics team searches its vast carrier network to identify the ideal transporter for your vehicle and desired ship dates. Once your order has been assigned to a carrier, Montway immediately notifies you by both phone and email with all carrier contact information and shipping details. It keeps customers informed of updates throughout the process.
  3. Vehicle delivery: The trucker drops off your vehicle either at your home or an agreed-upon location. After you conduct a detailed inspection for damage, you can accept the delivery.

Montway Auto Transport shipping options

Montway currently ships autos, motorcycles, classic cars, exotic cars, scooters, ATVs, UTVs, snowmobiles, RVs and inoperable vehicles. You can choose to have your car transported in an open or closed trailer.

Montway only offers door-to-door shipping; unlike some other companies, it does not offer terminal-to-terminal shipping.

Montway Auto Transport cost

For distances less than 500 miles, car transportation typically costs around $1.85 per mile. For trips between 500 and 1,500 miles, the cost is generally closer to 91 cents per mile. Any shipment 1,500 miles or greater costs around 60 cents per mile. This means a 1,500-mile transport from Atlanta, Georgia, to Denver, Colorado, costs around $900.

The total cost of transportation varies based on location, distance of transport and vehicle type. Seasonality and current market demand can also impact costs. If the car doesn’t run, you’ll likely have to pay more.

Expedited shipping is also available for an additional fee.

I made a cold call to somebody at Montway Auto Transport. They were so accommodating. I signed up that night. I got a call the next day, and right off the bat, I was engaged. It was an A+ experience. I knew I was gonna write an email. I never did. The conversations I had were very good. Montway farmed the job out to somebody else who did the transportation who were good. They contacted the seller in Arizona. They contacted me. They took a picture of the car when it was on the trailer, so I could release the money. They said they would be here in seven days. They showed up almost three days early. And they drove right to the house, which is great. Those things are huge. The plan was to meet at a local Home Depot, because it was easier right off the highway. But the person ended up driving right to the house.

I had one complaint, but I called Montway. They were apologetic and good about it. When everything solidified, the next day, I got a call from somebody to be, “We're just going over everything.” I filled out the information that the vehicle was modified. He asked, “What's the modification?” I said, “The Jeep has a two-inch lift.” He said because it was modified, I had to pay an extra 300 bucks because they get a separate vehicle. I said, “No, no, no, you're misunderstanding. It's a two-inch lift. It's no taller than a minivan. It’s a small jeep. It's not modified.” “That's what you have to do.” I said, “I'm not paying all that money for nothing. Why don't I just pay for the top level?” It was an extra 200 bucks to be on the top level. That way, they don't have to worry about the modification. He said, “You can't do that. Because it's been modified, you have to be charged the 299, and then you could do the top level on top of that.” It was ridiculous.

I talked to somebody the day before. They said this is the price and that was it. They knew the vehicle. If you're telling me the modification based on the inches in height, I understand. I was so unhappy. I said, “This is the second time I'm going through this. The first company didn't work out. Can you call your supervisor?” He said something to me, which was rude. I came back with, "I'm gonna cancel my reservation, and I'm gonna redo it. I'm just not gonna put that it was modified, so I don't have to deal with this upselling kind of thing." He said, “You do that. I'll make a note making sure that you can't do that.” That was a poor experience.

I emailed somebody from Montway that I talked to originally. They gave me a call. And when I told him about it, they were all apologetic. They said, “We’ll put you on the top for free. We won't charge anything. We apologize about it.” I said I didn't want anything for free. It was not about the money. It's about the fact that this person upsold me for something I didn't need. I'm not a 90-year-old lady. He was just getting that extra dough. I don't know what the reason for that was, but it was evident.

I said, “I'll get a measuring tape and tell you how tall.” He was adamant about the fact that it's modified, that he needs to get a different truck. He probably does it to everybody to say, “Well, we have this.” And people would say, “We're 90% there. Fine, whatever. Let's just close this.” It's easy to do this at the 11th hour, because people just want it done. But the supervisor was fantastic. He said he would talk to the person. I was very unhappy with that person who tried to get me to do something that I shouldn't have been doing. It was a significant amount of money. Besides that, it was wonderful.

I live in New Jersey and I bought a vehicle in Maryland from a dealer and had it transported up here through Montway. It was a very simple quoting process. I received a very reasonable quote, and they very responsive to my inquiries. Initially, I quoted a similar vehicle I found, and thought I was going to get that one. Then, I found a better opportunity down in the Maryland area, Baltimore. I told Montway that I had a different vehicle of mine and I just gave them the new location. Then within minutes, I had a quote back and it was even better than the initial quote. The cost was more than reasonable. I actually expected more, which was one reason why I jumped at it so quickly. It was a very good quote.

The quote was all virtual. You're not dealing with anyone. But when the car went to be picked up, they gave me in advance the name and contact information for the transporter. The individual who they originally dispatched it to had a conflict or a breakdown. So somebody else showed up at the dealership to pick up the vehicle. He presented different information than I had given the dealership in advance.

The dealership was a little concerned and they didn't want to release the vehicle to somebody and have the car disappear in a container to the South America. So they called me and said, "Hey, somebody's gonna transport the vehicle that's not the information. Can you double-check it?" Then I got ahold of Montway and they explained the situation, quickly sent me updated contact information for the person who was actually there to pick up the vehicle, which I was able to get to the dealership, and then they felt confident in releasing the vehicle. So there was a little mix-up there, but it was explainable and they resolved it very quickly.

I had a conflict on the day when the vehicle was dropped off because of the delay in them releasing the vehicle. It delayed it all about an hour. So the guy got here with the vehicle about an hour later than anticipated and I had an event at school for my daughter that I had to be at. But the gentleman who dropped it off said, "I'll put it in your driveway. I'll take photographs. I'll text you when it's there." We had our Ring camera looking at the driveway too. The transporter did a fantastic job of leaving it exactly where he told me, secured the vehicle, put the key in the mailbox, took photographs, and sent me the photographs. It worked out well. So even with that little glitch, everything was handled to my satisfaction 100%. I'd use Montway again if I was buying a car out of state.

I needed to move two vehicles to our second home and I didn't want to put the mileage on them. I got Montway's name from Consumer Reports and I hired them to transport my vehicles. They did a fantastic job. It was very easy to set up the transport. I told them when I'd like to have the vehicles moved and they called me back as soon as they had a transport ready. The vehicles were moved within the time frame I needed, which was within a week. They said I could have up to 100 pounds per car and I had some stuff in the trunk of one of my cars just because they were already there. But I really didn't utilize that option since I didn't need to.

For the pickup, it would have been hard because it was an eight-car carrier. But their driver pulled in on a straightaway and loaded the two cars. There were already four other cars on there and we were the last two. The driver was able to just pull up, do a three-point turn, and took the truck back out of the trailer. Also, I found their price cheaper than some of the other places which were giving me a quote, but there were add-ons. And Montway didn't do that. They just gave me one flat quote. It was a little bit more, but it was still cheaper once you took into account that there were no additional fees. And the other ones had additional fees that they would tell you about after the fact.

When the vehicles were delivered, they were in perfect condition. One of them was a collector's item and I didn't have any problems at all. The driver was very good about how he drove the cars to load them, how he stabilized them, and how he secured them to the trailer. I was very happy and very relaxed with the whole process. I even told them I'd use them again at any moment I need transport services. I would also recommend them to others.

We needed to transport my son's car. This is our second time using Montway. The first time was to transport the car from where we are to my son in Seattle. And the second time we used it was transporting from Seattle back to Dallas. They did a great job. They made everything run smoothly. But then, there was a little bit of a glitch, but they fixed it. When it was leaving Seattle, it was very important that they left on a specific date because it was right before my son was leaving and it had to be on that date. There was a choice of whether or not we paid extra to have it set for that specific day, or whether we just risked it and saw whether or not the first date that they said they would ship it out would ship. We wanted to ship on Friday. For us, that should be the day. For them, it was more like, "That's the first day that we could ship it out." It could ship out that day or within three days of that.

About a week before, I contacted them. I also found out that we were also with USAA, and we found out that they also offered a discount. One, I was checking for the discount. Two, I was checking to see if I asked them for Friday, how close would it be? Could I get it specifically? The guy that I talked to said, "It's more than likely. There are so many trips that we make between Seattle and Texas that more than likely, we can hit that date. But if you'd like to wait, you could just pay for it. If Thursday rolls around and you don't hear from us, you could pay for it then and be able to get it."

I said, “Are you sure? Because I know that I have to go on Friday." The guy said, "I'm pretty sure that we can do it. Otherwise, you can do it this way." Thursday night rolled around, and I didn't hear from them. I called them up and said, "Okay, I haven't heard from you. Do I need to pay the extra money to be able to do this?" And they said, "Yeah. But now that it's the day before, you have to pay extra. You have to pay a couple of hundred dollars more than what you would have been four days ago." I said, "But that's not what the guy told me. He said it would be the same price if I called the day before, and y'all recommended it. So I have an issue with this." It went back and forth. They were saying, "Nope, it's that or nothing, and you have to pay the extra money."

I called back and talked to the people that do the speed thing that they do, where it's the same day, and basically begged and pleaded with them and said, "My husband's gonna kill me because he's out there right now waiting for the car to be picked up. And now, it's gonna cost us way more than what we were anticipating. I could have done it four days ago.” I begged and pleaded. The guy said, "Let me see what I can do." He hung up, called me back, and gave me my original price for getting it out the same day. I said, "Okay. I will give you a 5 stars 'cause you worked with me." They totally saved me, and they gave their word and they did it.

I used Montway twice. The first time, I was moving from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to LA and the car I was transporting was old and I didn't think it would make it. Then, the second one I did was from Pittsburgh to Bradenton, Florida. I was transporting my son's car to him. I got Montway’s name from a friend who used their services to transport a car from Pittsburgh to Oregon and he spoke very highly of them. I highly recommend Montway.

Setting the service was pretty good. The only problem was that it was a little bit hard to coordinate. Because I understand how it works, you make your request to have the car delivered by a certain date, and then they have to go out and find the driver. Sometimes you don't hear anything back, and you don't really know what's going on.

But I understand the way it works is that you get the quote, you confirm it, and then they don't charge you until they've actually selected a driver. Then they charge you, and then you get in contact with the driver. All in all, the way that it works makes sense. It’s just sometimes, you're not in the loop, so you don't really know what's going on.

The first time, I had left to start my drive to California and the guy didn't tell me that he wasn't going to be there. Then, I was on the road, and he called me, and he said, "I can't pick up at your house." And I wasn't aware of that. So I had to make arrangements to have somebody take the car to a shopping center. It wasn't that far away, but I didn't realize. But the second time, when I talked to the driver, I said, "You're not going to be able to drive down my street." It's not because the truck wouldn't fit. It's because if they have other vehicles on the truck, there are a lot of trees and they would damage the vehicle. So I understood that.

The second time, it was not that big a deal. I just think that sometimes when they send out the thing about picking up, they should say, "You may have to take your vehicle to a place like a shopping center or someplace where there are no trees or anything like that." They could just give you a heads-up that that's a possibility. But the drivers were both very good. They were both totally different, but they kept me up to date. They sent me text messages, let me know when they were coming, and where they were. I had no issues with them. They communicated effectively. Also, both times, I was quoted the exact amount that I was charged.

0 stars if I could give them. We booked auto transport with Montway back in March for a quoted price of $1,069 for our 2017 Subaru Crosstrek from Texas to California. We planned our entire cross-country move around this reservation and pickup window. Then, during the actual pickup week, the price suddenly increased to $1,309 — over $240 higher than the confirmed quote we originally agreed to.

To make matters worse, the company changed the payment structure and began discussing COD balances and additional charges that were never clearly communicated at booking. We spent hours trying to get straight answers from customer service, and every conversation felt inconsistent. One representative would say one thing, another would say something different. We repeatedly had to explain the same situation over and over.

The most frustrating part was the complete lack of urgency and transparency. We were on the final day of our pickup window with no assigned carrier, no timeline, and no meaningful updates. We explained multiple times that we had no backup transportation plan and were relocating states with our family, yet we kept receiving vague scripted responses like ‘we are working on it’ and ‘we hope to have an update soon.’ Customer service acknowledged they had not even charged the deposit yet because no carrier had been assigned, despite us being told throughout the process that things were moving forward. We asked reasonable questions about refunds, timing, and pricing changes and never received clear accountability or solutions.

Moving across the country is stressful enough without a transport company adding uncertainty, last-minute price increases, and poor communication. We chose this company because of their reputation, but our experience has been incredibly disappointing and unreliable. I would strongly caution anyone considering using this company — especially if you are depending on them during a time-sensitive move.

I have been a customer of Montway for a few years and have been very happy with my experience.. This year's transport from Florida to RI is the exception. My car was delayed a week getting to RI because a driver could not be found who was going to RI in my timeframe. The driver who picked up my car never mentioned he was going to NJ. I made many calls to Montway's customer service (waiting periods were exceptionally long) but no one had an explanation (until the very last, extremely helpful customer service representative) explained the difficulty with the lack of a driver.

I would not have had a problem with the delay if someone had explained to me at the very beginning of the transport. I had taken a few days medication with me on the plane, but I had to pay out of pocket for the unplanned days replacement, I would have planned and brought additional medication with me, if I had been aware of the possible delay. I left a text/email with A.J. **, which he never responded to. I am unhappy with the lack of communication.

Montway Auto Transport helped. The cost is competitive, and you can, at all times, reach somebody. Also, they were responsive. We had an issue where the driver's hauler broke down. But it was confusion about which company it was because he worked for multiple people. There was a bit of confusion on one of our trips, and the car got there 10 days later, which meant we needed to pay for a rental car. That's the only thing they weren't very responsive about. Other than that, they let us know what was going on. They are good about giving the direct contact, and the driver let us know what was going on once we called because we could see he was stuck in Providence. The vehicle is in perfect condition, but they were very good about it. We used them again to drive back. Overall, a decent and honest company. Compare them with somebody else to give yourself a sense of pricing.

Montway was recommended by a friend and I shipped an Acura RDX based on that referral. After I went online and used Montway’s app or website to get a quote, I kept getting texts and emails from five different people and it was confusing. I was hoping the first person I talked to was who I would stay with, but until I signed the deal, I kept getting a ton of messages. I drove an extra five miles to help the driver load the car, which made it easier for him. But the delivery was not what Montway advertises as door-to-door. I understand some streets are probably not conducive to a semi, but I felt that I got forced into flexing his way. He knew the location but he wanted an easy parking spot close to the freeway. So, I arranged pickup at a fire department driveway so I could walk to it.

When the vehicle was delivered, it physically looked the same, but I noticed something underneath the car and planned to take it to a mechanic. I was not sure if something may have happened during transport. Communication was probably the hardest part, but their pricing was competitive. The quote stayed the same at the end of the transport as what I was originally quoted, although I paid a couple of hundred more bucks so I could get the car on a specific day because I was moving. When you're in a position where you don't have a lot of leeway, you have to do what you have to do.
