I had a problem with my ignition switch. I towed my car to the dealership on Friday at 12 pm,the car was done partially after i yelled at the manager at 3pm in Saturday!!!. They only started doing my car Saturday Morning!!!

Then when i came to pick up my car i found some things that were not before! The manager is claiming it has nothing to do with changing the ignition switch. First of all i paid $343!! and now i have to fix more after they fix my car.

Can somone explain me the who is responsible for this breaks after i pick up car at their dealership:

1.The horn does no work anymore. 2.The airbag light is on now, never was before. 3.When you turn the steering wheel on the turns it squeezes a lot. 4.The fog light is not on anymore, you need to hold in order to be stay on. I am very upset and disappointed.

I purchased a Ford Focus about 10 weeks ago. The car was a 2005 and it had about 50,000 miles when I bought it. The day after purchase I noticed that there was a drip inside the car over the gas peddle. While checking that out I discovered that the gear shift was black taped together.

I carried the car back to the dealership where I purchased it and they repaired the problems. It was about 7 weeks into me owning the car when I started noticing that the front brakes were squeaking. I took the car back to the place of purchase for service. While I was there I was told that I needed to replace the front brakes, a CV Axle, and the back brakes had a TSB on them.

I had the front brakes fixed, the car serviced, and the CV Axle put on. I paid nearly $11,000 when I bought the car and now I had to spend $272 more on it, and that was only because I had a warranty. The CV Axle was $500 on its own. I was told that the only way to fix the back brakes was to replace the brakes and the drums and whatever else that entailed. This work is $530 and they won't promise that this will take the squealing sound out of the back brakes. The service manager said that was the way Ford suggested to fix the problem. I am just looking for an inexpensive way to FIX my car. No maybe's, just fixed.

I own a 2000 Ford Focus LE with 80,000 miles approx. My wife drives the car, one morning she simply placed the key into the ingnition and it would not turn. I have never heard of such a problem with any car. I searched the internet and found just not this site reporting the problem. But, many others with the same issue. I called Ford and they refuse to acknowledged this as a recall issue. I refuse to pay $500 for a defective part from the manufacturer.

I am also having continuing problems with my 2001 Ford Focus. It started back in 09-21-2004. While leaving work one day,I tried to turn my key it wouldn't give in any direction. I have been stranded several times with this same problem. I had the ignition replaced which costed $430.00 plus towing fees of $35.00 dollars. I learned my key would get worn out to the point that it would cause my ignition to break. If you catch this problem before your key breaks the ignition you wont have to get it replaced (so I think). So that was about 80.00 dollars to reprogram my key every time. (walmart doesn't have the ability to copy it) I have now replaced my key about three times now. It's a very inconvenient problem to have and very expensive for the years that I have owned the car. It is now 10-29-07. Now here I am about to replace the ignition again and all I wanted was not have to pay out of pocket again. I know it's not a guarantee it wont break again.

The ignition on my 2001 Ford Focus locked up and will NOT turn. I went to a Wal-Mart today (10/28/07) that's about 7 miles from my house and when I came out, I went into my car, put the key into the ignition and the ignition just would not turn. I tried moving the wheel from side to side while attempting to turn the ignition key but it did not work.

I spent 4 hours in the Wal-Mart parking lot trying to turn my car on the and the ignition would not turn so I had to give up. Now I have to miss a day of work and hire a locksmith to diagnose the ignition problem and fix it. So this ignition problem is going to cost me 1 day of lost wages, plus repair costs.

I looked on the internet and noticed that way too many Ford Focus owners have had the same ignition switch problem so why isn't anyone doing anything about it? We should all mount a class-action lawsuit against Ford for putting a defective ignition switch on the Ford Focus and then refusing to recognize that it is a real problem and NOT just a problem that's attributable to a few people.

I will never buy another Ford Focus or any other car manufactured by Ford for that matter. Why buy a product from a company, in this case Ford, which makes defective products and then is denial about its products being defective and thereby turns its back on the consumer? I am extremely upset about this so if any current or former Ford Focus owners want to do something about this, please count me in!!

2000 Focus Wagon (115,000) 10/25/07 Replaced the ignition switch (368.00). I knew it was coming. This summer while picking up my oldest child at camp I couldn't get the key to even go in to the ignition. Luckily I had rolled the windows down in the car. I had my three year old as well as my new born with me. I called the dealership (which I try to avoid at all costs) and the man in the repair center told me get a hammer or something and just bang your key in the ignition. I did what he said and was able to get all of us home and out of the heat.

After that, my key would only go in the ignition one way. Today, after piling all three kids into the car, the key wouldn't go in again. I tried spraying my key as with silicone spray but that didn't help. Then, like an idiot, I did what the service department had said early and jammed the key into the ignition. Unfortunately that didn't work and the key was stuck without being able to start the car.

I piled everyone back into the house, called AAA (an actual company that helps people), then called the dealership to let them know my car was on it's way. How convenient they had an ignition switch already there waiting! Before I called my husband to tell him the bad news (we are on one income now) I researched this problem on the web.

I'm shocked to find I'm now part of a club. Why is there not a recall on this? Why is there not a law suit for reimbursement? As with other people, this is not my first problem with my car. My breaks have squeaked since I got the car, as well as all subsequent breaks. The front end grunts and grinds. I've had the fuel pump replaced. Two weeks ago my engine light came on. I took it to the mechanic so he could replace a valve that melted. That cost 200.00. I should have saved the 3,000.00 it cost to get the new transmission and spent it on a foreign made used car. This is my third, and last Ford automobile. Three strikes Ford, you are out!

I bought my 2003 Ford Focus Wagon brand new in October 2003. Within less then a year after I bought it, the brakes started squealing really bad. Every time I take the car in to the Ford dealership to get the oil changed, I ask them to check the brakes because they make such a terrible noise of squealing and gringing. Each time I am told that is normal due to the type of brakes on the car.

The last time asked about it, I was told that my brakes was fine but ford does make a brake pad that will quiet down the noise but it will not get rid of the noise. My husband is a certified diesel mechanic and has already spent well over $200 replacing the front and rear brakes. The brakes have already been replaced twice. The squealing noise just keeps getting worse. I am afraid that they may give out one day when I am driving. Also, I have had to get the radio replaced twice in the Ford Focus.

Once for no apparent reason the time on the clock defaulted to a 24 hour time setting instead of a 12 hour time setting. It would not allow me or the dealership to change it back to a 12 hour setting. The second time my daughter had just bought a brand new CD and opened it in the car and inserted it into the CD player, the CD player would not play. When she would hit the eject button it would tell her that there was no CD in the changer.

The dealership claimed that they could not get the CD out and that they would have to send the radio/CD player back to the factory and they would send back her CD once they removed it from the CD player. It has been over six months and we still have not gotten the CD back yet. I keep calling the dealership and all they keep saying is that they have not received it back yet. Both times the radio was replaced I had to pay a $50 deductable for a faulty radio and CD player that came that way. Another problem that I am having with the Ford Focus is that when I am driving and it starts to rain, I see steam roll off the top of the hood. So far it only seems to do it when it rains.

I have reported this to the dealership as well and have been told that it is from the insulation under the hood that holds the heat and causes the hood to get hot and that it is normal. I have never seen another car that has done that. If the hood is getting that hot I am afraid of the car catching fire at some point. I don't feel that the car is worth what I paid for it and I will never buy another Ford product.

The Ford Company doesn't seem to want to fix the problems that the cars were manufactured with. They do not have the consumers best interest at heart. Nor do they seem to care that it is the consumers hard earned money that is used to purchase these vehicles. I am very disappointed in the Ford Focus as well as the Ford Company that manufactures the car and promotes it so highly. I feel like I have been shafted or taken for a ride (in a poorly manufactured automobile).

Took it in for service for a readily available part. Two hours later I was notified Ted to come pick up car that the alternator could not be located from Miami to Tampa, no dealers or parts supply houses had this readily available. Two hours of my time wasted. Part was special ordered on 10/01/07. That was over two weeks ago. Product: Ford Focus 2003 The ignition cylinder has stopped working, so now the key cannot even turn to start the car. The key can be inserted, but not turned. It has become progressively worse over the past week or two, and now it seems permanently stuck. This is a terrible situation, and luckily I'm at home, and not stranded someplace. I tried to get it to turn for nearly 2 hours now with no luck. I've read that thousands of Ford Focus customers are having similar problems with their ignition cylinders (key cannot turn), and that Ford has done nothing. Ford should do something about the substandard ignition cylinder parts they've used in these cars. They owe Ford Focus owners new, and better made, ignition cylinders so we don't get stranded someday!

This time I could not turn the car off! Again this was after picking up my Mom in law at the airport! I think i will stay away from the airport with this car from now on! Thankfully the first repair still had ten days left on its warranty and Midas fixed it for free :) Love you Midas! I've had numerous problems with my 2001 Ford Focus SE Wagon (85k miles). For a very long time I had problems with it stalling out while driving on the highway-a very dangerous situation to be in on the beltway around Washington DC. My wife was returning from the dealership after they had worked on the car for this issue and it stalled out on a multi-lane highway.

Our toddler was in the back seat and there was a semi truck behind her and one next to her, fortunate she and my son avoided a deadly situation, but it could have been very bad! After many visits to the dealership they seemed to have remedied that issue. The rear latch does not function properly and the button on the dash for the latch has not worked for a long time. I've had brake issues. I can't even count the amount of times I replaced the rear brakes. The radio does not work properly-the buttons are cheap and have broken.

It gets terrible gas mileage and it has hesitated since the day I purchased it. The latest issue is the ignition. I stopped at a 7-11 and I could not get the ignition to turn when I attempted to leave. It has been there for the last two days as I try to figure out what to do. I have tried everything to get it to unlock with no luck! The local dealership wanted to charge $450.00 not including towing. I looked at getting a replacement from an auto parts store--the cost was $180.00 and would take three weeks to get it in! Ford should recall this item and for that matter recall the entire car! Our other car is a Honda and the replacement for this Ford will be a Honda!! Hey Ford---another customer lost!

I have had my 2001 Ford Focus for less than 2 and 1/2 years, and up until now it has been a pretty good car, with the exception of the brakes wearing extremely quickly. Yesterday, while getting on the interstate, with no prior warning, the car just turned off. It doesn't even have 60,000 miles on it. My husband and I were stranded on the interstate in rural South Carolina, 50 miles from home. Luckily this situation did not occur in heavy traffic. The consequences may have been deadly. We are new to the state, so we don't know anyone to help us out. We had to wait an hour and a half for a tow truck, pay $200 to get it towed to a repair shop, and found out today that they can't figure out what's wrong. This resulted in a $60 tow to a dealership, where it is going to cost $90 for the car to be looked at. Including the $20 to have it looked at by the repair shop, we have spent nearly $400, and still do not have a working vehicle. Originally from metro Detroit, and with relatives working in the auto industry, I had bought into the Buy American thing. I can honestly say that my next car will be Japanese.

No dealers around the area could get it in for a week, so we ended up having family tow the car to Mass. from WV because the dealer there could do it, and luckily this WAS a recall, that we never knew about though.

2nd Problem, left us stranded on a trip to Fort Lauderdale Florida at 2am at night outside of Orlando. This problem was the Wire going into the coil harness is stretched so tight it wears and breaks.

3rd problem, both back windows have 'fell'. There is a nylon piece that holds the cables inside of the regulator, this nylon breaks, and the window falls while driving. It happened on the passenger side about a year ago, and a month ago the driver side. This is a costly repair as you have to purchase the entire assembly, they do not sell repair kits.

4th problem, the ignition key today was stuck in the ignition, it would not turn, could not be removed, would not start etc... After reading online there are many people with the same issue, I tried WD-40 to no avail, but tapping the key with my pocket knife did allow the key to turn and start, but it is still stuck in the ignition and cannot be removed. Other problems that have not left me stranded yet, but surely will:

There is a banging/clanking noise sounds like in the front suspension, the engine idles very roughly, the fan belt has been replaced and still squeals and squeaks sometimes, the breaks are very loud and squeal, even after having new ones put on.

I owned a 2005 Ford Focus Station Wagon and had a rear end collision while stopped at a light. As a result of the poor seat construction, my lumbar spine was wedged in the gap between the seat cushion and the back cushion during the impact. At the time, I had the seat lowered for comfort. Unfortunately, as you lower the seat, you also create a gap between the seat cushion and the back cushion, exposing the lumbar spine to that gap. This is where my lower spine was wedged as a result of the rear-end collision.

The back cushion has too little support to keep the spine from buckling and wedging itself, butt first. (Yes, my butt isn't THAT big) Now, the gap wasn't that big for me, only about an inch or so. Imagine now a rear end collision with a tall person sitting in that seat, where there is a considerable gap between the seat cushion and the back cushion, say maybe two or more inches. In a rear end collision, with the front brakes applied, the rear of the vehicle actually buckles upward and forward, while the bodies in the car move down and back, as in my case (since objects at rest [my body] respond only after the impact to the vehicle). Just watch all those dummy commericals...

This is a SERIOUS safety hazard if you manipulate the lever to lower the seat cushion. FACT: The european ford focus driver seat moves as an entire unit (both seat cushion and back cushion move together as a unit, never creating such a gap) FACT: The u.s. model is the cheap alternative to give the impression of a adjustable seat. Instead, the lever lowers and raises only the seat bucket portion for the driver, while exposing a gap between it and the back cushion. The back support stays in the same place ANOTHER FACT: All european models have headrests in the back seat ANOTHER FACT: Al u.s. models have NO headrests in the back seat TALLY: U.S. MODELS ARE UNSAFE FOR REAR-END COLLISIONS Focus your Whiplash, Ford!

My 2001 Ford Focus was towed to this dealership with a faulty ignition lock. Mahwah Ford gave me an estimate of $860 which I felt was suspicious. I had checked on the internet and found this to be a rather common problem for which Ford had issued a service bulletin and repair kit. I called another Ford dealer who was familiar with the problem and quoted me $250--less than one third the price quoted by Mahwah Ford. I called Mahwah Ford and talked to a service supervisor who said that they could 'try' to repair it for less--leaving me with the impression that the bill would likely still be very high. I paid to have the towed to the other dealer who quoted $250. The car was repaired correctly and on time. To add insult to my towing expense, Mahwah Ford charged me $40, admitting that they did not touch the car. The $40 was apparently the standard charge when a car is brought in, regardless of whether or not any work is done on it. So, I paid $40 for an estimate that was more than 3 times the going rate and a tow charge to boot. I would not recommend patronizing Mahwah Ford under any circumstance.

They initially tried to blame the damage on me, but eventually fixed the damage. After having my car back for 3 days, it was clear something was VERY wrong. The valve ticking was still there but now there was all kinds of spark knock (detonation)as if there was a timing issue. The service manager said this is normal for this car, I insist it's not normal at all, he promptly threatens to have me removed from the property ! Wanting to avoid conflict, I call Ford Customer Service, they tell me that some detonation and valve ticking is normal for this car according to the technical hotline. Still in a state of disbelief, I decide to take the car to a different Ford Dealer. They tell me,and I quote their service manager :Ford is telling us that if the customer can't hear the noise with the hood shut and the windows shut it's not an issue, end quote. Woody Anderson had my car for an additional week and claim that based on the previous quote there is nothing we can do for you. Keep in mind these dealers have had my car for 5 weeks, my wife and I were without our car, we had to shell out money for a rental, I lost LOTS of time from work, and it's still not right ! I asked, how can they expect me to repurchase the same defective product again. They said I had no other alternative. The quote I got from Ford Service was $375.00 plus labor and towing. (No ignition, no starting the car.) So.., I called the So Cal Auto Club. They stated that I could have a automotive locksmith over in an hour and fix it on sight. According to the tech, he fixed one just yesterday, and has fixed quite a few previously. Oh, it cost me a total of $232.00 (no tow and no wait). In reviewing the internet for recalls, I saw numerous complaints about the same problem. This was our third and final purchase of a Ford vehicle. Within 1 month the brakes were not functioning. The master cylinder had to be replaced. The brake pads have been replaced. Since then it is in and out of the shop every 2 weeks to a month for noisy brakes. I have not received any recall or information in the mail regarding any recalls or issues.

Last month I had a wreck which I believe resulted in the brakes again, however, can not prove it. After I got the vehicle repaired I took it into the dealership again for the noisy brakes. Today they called to tell me this is a common problem with the vehicle and I will just have to live with it and it probably will be a problem with all ford vehicles eventually due to the fact they can not use better brake pads. They told me there are better brake pads however Ford will not allow them to use them. I don't know why we as consumers have to just live with a problem when we shell out good money for our vehicles in the hope they will last us for a long time. The air bag light went on and would not go off.

I took it in only to find there was a loose wire in the console and I had to pay for the repair. Why did I have to pay for the repair I asked? They said because it was not covered under warranty. If there was a loose wire when the vehicle was made it should not be my problem. I gurantee you I will never buy another ford product due to these problems and I will be unloading this one as soon as I can afford to. I bought a brand new Ford Focus in 2003 along with the extended warranty (lucky me). I have brought it in multiple time for the same reasons. Reason 1. The transmission out right fails. at 20, 30, 50, and 60 MPH i have had the transmission go out.(2004-2007) I would try to accelerate but nothing. I could hear the engine go, i would look down and still be in drive but there would be no power. When I am traveling at 60 MPH on a freeway with semi's behind me it is a little scary. I have also had experiences where it feels like mt transmission/engine falls right out from underneath me.(2004-2007) I would be traveling about 20 MPH and the car would jolt and shake VIOLENTLY, almost like you just got rear ended hard.

This has happened at least 4 times not to mention the 10-15 times it has happened but with not as much force. EVERY time i have brought it in ASAP. Mostly that night or the very next morning. The first few times their rehearsed answere was well there's no engine light so nothings wrong. After the 3rd or 4th time i brought it in they said that they had to take apart the transmission to take a look what was wrong with it, and they weren't sure if my extended warranty would cover it, so I was taking a major chance. It either would be a 2 thousand dollar job or it would be covered. I had to let them go ahead and work on it. I have my wonderful fiance driving it and can't have her getting hurt.

They said that the problem was in the gasket from the trans to the engine( not a technical term, can't think of the specifics but it's all on paper). Durring the time they were waiting for parts They had no car avaiable for me to drive. It was a 2 week job and they gave me a loaner for about 1 week. So the next time i brought it in for the same problem that they obviously didn't fix they told me I had some metal scraps that had got into somewhere they wern't supossed to.(once again, i am sorry i don't have technical terms but i have the invoice).

It was another week and a half with out my car. So now 2007 it hesitates like crazy, every once in a while it still dropes out of gear going 60, and everytime i bring it in they say (we'll theres no warning light so we can't work on it. I still have about 15 thousand more on my warrany and plan on going in every time something happenes. At the least it at least gets noted that i was in there. I bought a 2003 Ford Focus SE one and a half years ago and about 9 months ago I was almost stuck in the middle of town because my ignition key would not turn. A friend and myself eventually fixed it by manually turning the steering by the tires. After a few days of getting used to it, I found that shoving the key in as hard as possible and then turning it worked. Until 2 days ago when I actually had to hit the key into the ignition with a claw-hammer. I had questioned the local Ford dealership about the procedure of fixing the problem and they said it'd run around $400. And seeing as there are several hundred claims, this is a problem that should be solved through a recall.

At I bought my 2000 Focus used with 45,000 miles on it. Just two miles from the dealership the check engine light came on and the car dies. I was able to start it again and drive back to the dealership they then had it for a week to fix a speed sensor which five years later I would have to replace once again. Six months later in December 2002 the clutch spring snaps and my clutch pedal does not rise to proper position, I take it to the dealer and I had to pay $250.00 to replace a part that costs $4.99 needless to say it was not honored in the extended warranty. In March 2003, due to engine stalling and hesitation I had to replace all the plugs and cables. Three months after that I had to replace brake drums, shoes, and pads. UGH by this time I was paying for a car that I trully hated. In 2007, I had to once again replace speed sensor, clutch spring, water pump, ignition cylander, front axle, motor mounts, and the friver seat as they are so cheaply made the cusining had flattened so much I had a steel bar in my back every time I drove the piece. As anyone who pays for a car we look forward to the last payment on the loan so we can own the car. I didnt, I drove that piece of FORD garbage to the local NISSAN dealer and traded it in for a 2007 SENTRA and I am in love with that car. I'm so sick of having an unreliable car. I have a 2003 Ford Focus ZX5, and it's the most unreliable piece of crap ever. After about a year of use, the ignition started giving me crap, freezing and not turning, locking up. I brought it in, and sure enough i had to spend over 350 dollars to have the ignition replaced. Now that I have a new ignition, it's STILL giving me crap. The first time it happened, they gave me a load of crap about a battery signal not tapping into the ignition or some crap. They claimed to have fixed it, but for some mysterious reason decided that I didn't need to be charged.

Two weeks later, it happens AGAIN and I need to get towed AGAIN. This time (get this) the FORD GARAGE DOESNT KNOW WHAT TO DO. It was the SAME problem they claimed to have fixed, yet this time they can't. What a bunch of liars. I'm like, if a FORD Garage can't fix a Ford car, I'm totally screwed! Get this, the key will turn, the lights and devices will come on, but the car just won't start.

The mechanic said his best guess is that it's the anti-theft device. I looked this up online and it could mean somethign simple like getting a new programed key OR something uber expensive (just my luck) like replacing something called the tranceiver. And I'm told that the part alone is 300 dollars. I want my money back! I can't go anywhere far from home cause I'm so afraid my car won't start. When I go do errands I make someone wait in the car with it running, I'm so sick of stress, but I just cannot afford any more repairs at this point.

We ended up having to take a cab home. I find out from reading that it is probably the ignition cylinder. We were able to get the car home by lightly tapping the key in with a hammer, while it was in the ignition (found that on the internet) This is a really common with all years of the Ford Focus'! I own a 2000 Ford Focus with around 85,000 miles. I bought it from a Ford dealer 9/2003. I started having trouble when decelerating a couple months ago. It would act like it was going to die when I would stop at an intersection. I also received vibrating and performance problems when attempting to drive it above 40mph. I would put the car in neutral or park, the engine would act better and then I would get this strange odor. The engine light came on so I knew I had to have it looked at sooner than later.

I took it to my mechanic. I had a tune-up done. The mechanic drove it and noticed the same problem. She looked up the code from the diagnostic and found the Technical Service Bulletin on the website. It states carbon builds on the valves causing sticking. The head would have to be replaced at around $1500. She suggested cleaning it first. We tried that twice without any luck. I would drive about 10 miles and the engine light would come back on. I then took it to another mechanic for a second opinion.

The second mechanic said the same exact thing: the head had to be replaced because of a sticking valve. He stated Ford had re-designed the engine because of all of the problems that had existed with my engine. He also stated there was nothing I did wrong or anything I could have done to prevent the problem. I was told it was just plain a design defect and Ford should pay for the repair. The estimate here was $1500-$2000. I was told I would not cause damage to the vehicle by driving it. I contacted Ford by email. I received the reply to contact their Customer Service line. I called them and stated my problem. I was told their would be an investigation into my complaint. I was asked to take the vehicle to a Ford dealer, at my own expense, to have it diagnosed. We mutually agreed on a Ford dealer. I was told to call back when I had the results from the dealer. I had the car examined four days later by the dealer. I received the call by 8:35 am telling me the same thing the other mechanics had told me.

The estimate was $2000-$2500 to replace the head. I then called Ford to tell them the news. I was told by the customer service rep BEFORE I could tell her the news Ford had already made a decision not to help me. I had just paid $84.00 to be told a third time the same thing for no reason! I simply asked the dealership to help me with a name of someone I could contact at Ford to speak with about the problem. I was told they would check with the Zone Manager and call me. I was told I wouldn't damage the car by driving it, but if the valve would stick and stay stuck, it would just up and stop running. It indicated to me, for safety reasons, I shouldn't drive the car. I did receive a phone call from the dealership. I was told I did not buy the car from them so they wouldn't help me. Also, the Zone Manager declined to help since it was over 85,000 miles.

I was referred back to customer service at Ford. I began to research the problem. I filed a complaint with the NTSB requesting a re-call. I also filed a complaint with the BBB. Ford called me at work regarding the BBB complaint. The Ford rep took the info and called me the next day at work. I was told the dealership said the carbon build up took place because I didn't drive my car-I had let it sit for long periods of time. I was also told I didn't qualify for the Technical Service Bulletin. I once again explained the fact it was Ford's design defect that caused the problem.

Ford declines to do anything about it at all.

Since yesterday each time I have turned my ignition on I have always thought as to how long this lock will last and where next I may get stranded. I wonder what good is a car if you drive it in fear. Such things change your whole driving psychology. Now if I plan for a trip even to Chicago..I would fear stopping my car on any rest areas. What if the key doesnt turn again when I am in the middle of nowhere. I feel continuing using this car is similar to continuing your marriage with a person with whom you have lost trust with. I own a 2003 Ford Focus ZX3 that I bought for my daughter. It has been nothing but trouble since the day I bought it. It was a brand new car when I bought it in December 2002.

The ignition switch is constantly getting stuck, that runs about $250 (the cheapest). We've tried the DYI way and just ended up losing $60 for the ignition switch, apparently the focus has a chip that has to be programed to the car so you can't just do it yourself, so that runs about $400. Then there's the case of the serpentine belt, it just flew off, about two weeks ago.

Thank God my daughter was pulling out of the driveway not driving on the highway. Off course Ford forgot to add a diagram under the hood of how to replace the serpentine belt, just like they forgot to place an owners manual in the glove box. About a month before the sernpentine belt incident, my daughter was driving to college and was coming off the bridge to the entrance of the college and the car just shut off, and the steering wheel went stiff. This was during the college rush hour and she could've caused a major accident, luckily the car suddenly turned back on. All of these recent problems have not been checked by a mechanic, because of the financial situation my daughter is in.

She is a single mom and a student and half of her paycheck goes to childcare for my grandson. And the warranty has expired already.

My 2001 Ford Focus ignition switch finally seized up after several warning episodes. Luckily, I finally got the car going at drove to the dealer for a $441.00 replacement of the ignition. Also the coolant reservoir had a leak and the right engine mount was damaged for a grand total of $850.00. The problems started early with this car: first a $400.00 brake job after about 2 years, a coolant system problem, misdiagnosed as me not watching the level, leading to a major engine overheat and a $600 service and part replacement ( I forget what the part was) The remote trunk opener has never worked. I have also had the fuel pump replaced. The list goes on so I have quite a thick file on this car.

The key would not turn, the steering wheel would not turn, nothing worked. We had never heard of this problem with the Focus until mine had it and I read the complaints online. It certainly would have been a consideration when we bought the car. After considerable expense and inconvenience, the car is now fixed, but I worry every time I drive it that the ignition problem will happen again.

Wow! I thought I was the only one with problems with the Ford Focus. After reading all the other blogs, I just can't believe it! I bought my 2000 Focus in December 1999. It still runs pretty well for a 7 year old car, but I have had my share of problems. First, at 36,248 miles my ignition had to be replaced. So when I took it in, they told me that my warranty only covered up to 36,000 miles so I had to pay $255. Then a few months later, my car remote went out so I have had to manually lock my doors for about 4 1/2 years because they can't fix it. Miraculously, my windows still work! In 2002, I was involved in a car accident and they said it wasn't totaled even though the entire front of my car was torn off. After 3 months, they fixed it and it has never run the same since. The engine is so loud and the car sometimes sputters when I stop. To top it all off, my engine is getting stuck again, and I'm afraid that I'll be stranded somewhere with my 19 month old daughter. I just can't believe that Ford has let this problem go on this long without doing something about it. Well, I guess they feel that if they do a recall on the ignitions now, everyone will be bringing their Focus's back and they would really go broke! It seems to me that they purposely made them like that.

I purchased a 2003 Focus (standard) in August of 2005. It had 64,000 miles on it. Except for the windshield which was cracked completely across and the fact that the radio/CD player was missing, both of which the dealer agreed to fix, nothing else stood out as a potential problem....'cause it was all hidden under the hood and in the ignition. The ignition ceased up and I was unable to turn the key and was stranded until the tow truck arrived.

I was told it wasn't covered under the warranty although nearly everything else concerning the ignition was - this item was not. It had to be drilled out and replaced and a new key made. It cost me $450.00. This is one of the numerous costly repairs I've had to pay for on the car and I will never have another one. I could be driving a Jag for the same money I'm dumping into a Focus. Over the past 18 months, I've spent thousands in repairs with only 1 item covered by the warranty.

I've been stranded routinely and have had to be towed with this lousy Ford product more times than I have been towed since I started driving cars 30 years ago. I would caution anyone thinking about buying a Focus and suggest if you're driving a Focus that you rid yourself of it before it empties your pockets and dumps you on the side of the road. I would welcome a class action suite to hold Ford accountable. Sales and Service staff at Ford dealerships are nasty enough but then to be snubbed by a domestic manufacturer is just plain un-American. No wonder people turn to the foreign makers.

This is my third Ford, a 2003 Ford Focus,(second car was a Ford Escort from them, first was a Ford Tempo years ago at another dealer). This weekend late at night coming out from a grocery store (luckily across from home) my key fit into ignition but would not turn at all, it was frozen. I was mislead by the tow company to tow my car to them under false pretenses and ultimately had them tow it to my apartment across the street only to have it re-towed to the dealer this morning to find that they tried to cheat me but failed (told this by the dealer as well as the second tow company).

The dealer called me to say they were able to get the lock unfrozen and drive it around but that it was not covered under my extended service plan, that my regular warranty expired in March (this I agree is true). They also informed me that the part however, was covered under the next level of warranty coverage which I did not purchase, the next step up (my warranty was a step above the basic one, covers 85 percent they tell me). So they stated the Ignition Cylinder Lock would cost $400.00 to repair, this didn't include other things being repaired that were unrelated. I decided to check the internet to see how much a part like this would cost outside of the dealer, I typed in these exact words: 2003fordfocusignitioncylinderlock and it brought up: www.consumeraffairs.com which opened up a HUGE can of worms. If anything in my life hasn't taught me a thing about cars, this has.

This website which is devoted to recalls and all the information about car problems, complaints, lawsuits, etc. provided me with more information then I wanted to know about my Ford Focus that now it has put fear into my ownership of mine. A list of 74 pages alone devoted to this Ignition Cylinder Lock provided clear information that points the finger at a valid and justifiable reason to submit this for a Recall. After my jaw dropping experience on this website, finding information about the engine fires that have occured and leaving me with a huge question mark as my Focus has had several instances of a mysterious burning smell that lasts for upto 2 minutes and I have never found anything, even pulling off the side of the road, now I am totatlly scared as my young teenage son rides in the front with me. This same issue is presented on this same site: Engine Fires with same symptoms.

So, I called and spoke with my Service Advisor: Ivan Green, I told him all about this, he stated that since it is not a recall, not covered under my warranty, not their problem and I have to pay it, he eventually compromised after putting me on hold. He stated that since they would cover majority, he ask that I pay a 20 percent Parts Appreciation Fee, that would be $80.00 based on the $400 he quoted me to repair, I said yes reluctantly. My coworkers all told me that that was completely wrong given all that was on the website, so wrong, that it is a Ford problem, that it is not a wear and tear issue, it is a defect and should be recalled.

They encouraged me to call the Service Manager, I did. He still stated that I should pay the 20 percent, I disagreed and told him about the website and complaints. He said he didn't work for Ford. I thought he was joking, he said he worked for Drew Ford, not Ford Motor Company, that they ultimately have the say. So, he said he's split the 20 percent Parts Appreciation, but by this time I realized where this was headed and stood my ground, I simply told him that I felt I should not be responsible and felt he should be able to discuss this with someone at Ford Motors, he put me on hold, stated that he took care of it all but taking away the deductible of $50.00 instead making it even and giving me a one day rental car at no charge.

So, they never called me back with any futher information, left me hanging for the night. This situation has altered my perception of Ford and I will look elsewhere the next car I purchase. Both tow drivers told me that this is a very common problem, that they see this all the time. I believe that Ford is the one's at fault here, they need to put this part into the Recall and get it taken once and for all, had I been in a bad part of town, anything could have happened, stranded alone or with my son. Please see the website for yourself, you will be clearly just as shocked as I.

Usually I sit there and play with it for a few minutes and I can get it to work. Today it seems to have broke altogether. So I resorted to calling around to find out what to do about it. You have 2 choices, you can tow it to the dealership and get a new ignition ($400), or a locksmith can redrill and make a new key for ($160). When you call Ford they tell you it hasn't been recalled because not many complaints have been received. So I placed my complaint. There are millions of posts out there about this ignition problem, but yet not even a quarter of the people have called to make a formal complaint. I urge everyone who has the same problem as me please, please call them. If enough of us submit complaints it will be recalled, and we can be reimbursed for the defect. I have had water leak problems with my 2003 Ford Focus since we bought it brand new in July 2003. I've taken it to the Ford dealer at least 4 times to be fixed, but each time the water returns. After heavy rain or snow thaw we get a puddle of standing water in the front passenger seat and the floor behind the seat gets soaked. After years of shoddy work from the dealership and no responses from letters to Ford, I found an 800 number and contacted them.

They made me feel as if they were going to take care of this issue and told me that they would contact the dealer that I had been dealing with. When I arrived to get the work done, the dealer service dept had no idea that I was coming. When I called the customer rep Maria back, she told me it was no problem -- she had just spoken to them (because I had left her number with the service people to call her).

Then, when I told her that the service people needed permission to check under the carpeting, to see what, if any, water damage had been done from 4 years of water leaks. She asked if I had authorized that work, to which I replied that they asked for her permission. I got the notion that Ford was not going to cover this work, so I asked her if they were. She replied no. Not only would they not pay for the investigation into possible water damage from their faulty work, she told me that Ford would no even be covering, in full, the leak repairs!

I was floored. After mush arguing, Maria told me that Ford is not responsible for their faulty craftmanship, nor is Ford Motor Co. responsible for the inept maintenance service done by the workers at the Ford dealership. I asked Maria if Ford stood by their cars and she said, naturally, yes. To which I asked her then why will they not fix my car, which had a water leak problem the day it was built in their factories. She replied we do stand by our cars. Apparently they just don't take responsibility for them.

Just one day after the tune up the car began to loose energy it would go and then even if I pressed the gas it would not go. They claimed fist that the cables needed to be replaced (what about that inspection?) then the coil pack was damaged and I insisted that they had to replace them since they failed to mention they were not in good condition. After making them agree that they would replace the wires and the coil pack without charging me, the assistant manager warns me that they will do the repair but if anything else goes wrong they are not responsible. The day they were suppose to change the parts my car dies on my way to school and had to be towed. They claim the engine needs to be replaced and that will cost me about $4000.00, more than what the car was purchased for. Ford claims that these cars are famous for having this problem and that they have sold used cars that the engine dies one week later. The Ford wants to charge me $75 for the towing of the car and to diagnose it another $380.00. What kind of service or product is this? I just can't believe the car was fine one day and dead the next it makes no sense.

Although i returned four times for repairs - the repairs were put onto three oreders, as I was still in their customer parking lot when I realised the repair was not done properly. 2- The trunk latch constantly jammed.

This has been fixed/replaced four times. Just recently it jammed again. I was told that, although it has been a regular issue with this car, now the warranty is up, i will have to pay for the repair. 3 - The ignition went out, only two weeks out of warranty (but the dealership did replaced this gratis). 4 - The recall (only official one) on the back door latches. Before the recall, I complained to the dealership about the problem, but was brushed off. I went to a different dealership to have the repair done.

Over the past few weeks, we would put the key in the ignition and it would lock up. With some effort, we could get the steering wheel to unlock and start the car. Yesterday, while out with my children, the same thing happened and I was unable to get the ignition to work. Thankfully, it was the weekend and my husband was not at work and was able to rescue us. The car was towed to the dealership this morning. In addition, over the past 2 years we have replaced brakes/rotors, put new tires on at 20,000 miles - they were bald - either Ford put lousy tires on the vehicle and told us they were 40,000 mile tires or the car has an alignment problem (the salesman who sold us the car pointed out the premium tires and wheels on the car), we had to replace the battery. I KNOW HOW TO FIX YOUR FOCUS IGNITION! First I'll tell of my problems though. I have a 2000 Ford Focus, which other than this ignition problem has served me pretty well. I started having troubles turning the key about a month ago, and it got progressively worse, until I had to bang on the key with a hammer to get it to turn. Eventually, I got stranded at work(70 miles away from home), and had to have it towed to a Ford dealership.

They told be the battery, starter, alternator, and ignition were all bad and it would cost me $1300 to fix. I had the car towed home the next day. After trying to fix it myself, and then having a local mechanic look at it, I finally contracted an honest locksmith. This is the best way to fix your ignition. He drilled out the ignition. I bought a ignition from the Ford Dealership(though it may be possible to get this part elsewhere for cheaper), and the locksmith keyed it to fix my key. He then installed the new one, and it works like a charm.

I paid a total of around $100. The locksmith did tell me that if I have problems with this new ignition, that it is possible to take the ignition out, and completely take out the guts of it, so that sticking a screwdriver in could turn the cylindar. The original key would be necessary to start the car because of the imobilizer(piece around the key cyclindar that recognizes a chip in the key), but without the tumblers taken out there would be no possibility of the ignition cylindar not turning. I hope this helps someone, and I hope you all never buy another Ford or go to a Ford dealership, unless it is to complain or sue.

I also recommend keeping receipts and trying to find a good class action suit lawyer to eventually make Ford pay for their incompetance in putting out these faulty parts.

For the past couple of weeks, the ignition on my 2003 Ford Focus ZX3(30,000) was sticking. I would put the key in and have to turn it twice and turn the wheel back and forth a couple of times to get the key to turn. After a couple of attempts, the car would start.

I was planning on taking it to the dealership to get it looked at this weekend, which turned out to be too late. Friday afternoon, after work, I walked out to my car, put the key in the ignition and tried to turn, but it wouldn't budge. The wheel, gears, and ignition was frozen. I attempted this for 30 mins before calling my fiance out of work. He tried to put WD-40 on the key to see if that would help, but it didn't.

I ended up having to wait 3 hours for a tow truck. Luckily I was in a safe place on a military base. I don't know what would have happened if this occurred on the highway. My car was towed to a local Ford dealership and today I was notified that it was going to cost $450.00 plus tax and towing to replace the ignition switch. It is not covered under warranty. I was extremely upset upon hearing this.

I immediately researched the problem on the internet and found hundreds of similar complaints. I then e-mailed local newschannels to investigate these reports of a malfunction cover-up. Why have they not issued a recall after so many angry customers have voiced their complaints? I urge you all to talk to the media about this problem. If we can get the media involved, maybe we can get reimbursed for the expenses. I know that there has been a class action lawsuit in California for this same problem, but do not know the status of the suit. PLEASE TALK TO YOUR LOCAL MEDIA TO INVESTIGATE THIS ONGOING PROBLEM!!!!

I had NO idea there was a problem from Ford on this - and after reading thousands of horror stories, FORD should have done a Call Back. Thanks to the writers on this site; I took my Focus over to the local Ford dealer. they confirmed the ignition switch was bad to the tune of: $290.49 and now it supposedly) is fixed? let's hope so.

Parts like this - they should last the lifetime of the vehicle. If there was an inferior part and it was known to be defective after a certain timeframe, it is up to the manufacturer to step up to the plate and take responsibility for the replacing the defective part. Ford did not do this and I am very upset that they have taken this standpoint of making money rather than producing Quality.

I just hope Ford is not reverting back to the 80's where nearly every car produced was a POS. I am really concerned about the safety of others ~ this defect can cause serious accidents while driving, not to mention being stranded in the middle of nowhere with no other option other than being towed. If there are groups of people that want to file a lawsuit, I would be willing to join in. Ford wasn't thinking when they decided to turn their heads the other way on this - for the safety of others, this defect should of been recalled. All of the people that laid out hundreds of dollars and have been inconvenienced should be reimbursed by Ford.

The first time was two weeks after we purchased a Blue 2006 Ford Focus, All American Ford calls, I really don't remember why we had to sign this contract again.. all of the numbers were the same so I didn't think that much about it but they call us again to tell us the car I have been driving for over a month (All American Ford was transfering my tag from my Jimmy to the Focus) had the wrong VIN number on the contract and that we need to come back and sign another contract. When we get there the finance manager, says I have good news I was able to get you a better interest rate from 8.9% to 3.9% but I had to reduce the number of months from 72 to 60. by this time I was tired of dealing with this people so I just signed and didn't pay attention to the contract, I wish that I had… The first two contacts had the same numbers the last contact changed by $2,000 (approx) more for the car and my trade went down 2000.00 but it was to late to do anything about, I had already signed the contract. In June 06, my husband and I went to renew the tag on the Focus just to be told that we do not have a 2006 Ford Focus to be renewed but we did have a GMC Jimmy that needed to be renewed. I could not believe that they did not register my vehicle. So I call the dealership to just to be transferred from voicemail to voicemail, I even left a voicemail for the owner. The dealership put us off for 4 days, come to find out they had misplaced my paperwork for the registration and it took them 4 days to find it and have the car registered. I never did get a call from the owner. I bought this car in April and in June I take it to dealership to be serviced and have them look at the front end, it had a funny vibration when I was driving on the I-10. The Service Manager, for both locations, drives my car and tells me that what I am feeling is the road. I take it in again for another oil change a couple of months later by now the driver's window is vibrating enough that I can hear it and the back hatch vibrates a little bit, so I let them know and of course they can not duplicate the sound.

I bought 2001 Ford Focus ZX3used with 60,000 miles. At about 80,000 miles both front coil springs broke within 1 year of each other. They were non-replaceable at the time because Ford would not release springs for retail sale. Have been driving car because my only transportation to work.

On the evening of 23rd feb 2007 I received a phone call from my girlfriend saying that her key would not turn the car over.. She is the owner of a 2000 ford focus. I in turn called a buddy who drives a wrecker and had him pull the car to our home.I have worked on cars for 20+years and decided to take a look and see what i could do to repair this issue(this is not the first time I had seen this happen on the focus)when I took the cover apart and inspected the problem I was in over my head with the eqp I was working with.

So sat the 24th we had the focus towed to the STEELER!!!! and were informed that this was not a function covered under a recall.(Wait this gets better)the cost to replace this parts &labor came to 404.98. when we went to pick-up the fine ford product I looked over the repair order I found a charge of 23:00 for a enviormental fee..(to hell is this i asked myself?) I went back to the counter and asked what this fee was for the rather young lady stated that everyone pays this fee.HA HA I told her that I was not everyone and that i wanted to speak with the service Mgr that this charge was a bunch of B/S.

The service Mgr said that he was not going to argue the issue with me and promptly removed the fee.

I brought my 2000 Focus into the body shop to repair some damaged body work. When I got my car back I found my key sticks in the ignition and it takes some jiggling to get it to finally engage. I talked to the body shop, who of course claim that it was a problem for them the entire time they had the car. I looked it up on the internet and have found it to be a regular occurance! This is my third and last Ford, this Focus has been nothing but problems from the beginning.

In 2004 I bought a 2001 Ford Focus SE, and it only had 40,000 miles on it which wasn't to bad. The reason that I got this car was because my family had always owned Fords, and never had a problem.

Also with being a college student it was perfect for me, it got good gass milege, and it was small but sporty. The first year that I had the car i didnt have a problem. Shortley after that first year mark I got a recall for the rear door locks, which wasn't a major deal, the local dealer took care of everything. then the next month I receive a warrenty extension ofr the Front coil springs.

If you think about it, Ford obviously knew there was a problem with the springs, why not just recall them? Well, about 2 weeks after receiving this letter, I was pulling up to work when I hear this loud pop, and my car shuddered to a stop. I come to find out that Lucky Me, my coil spring broke. Is that all? Oh no, not only did it snap in half but, the broken piece ended up lodged into my tire, resulting in a blown tire. Just imaginme if it would have brocken just 15 minutes earlier, when i was on the highway doing around 60mph, that would have been fun.

There is no doubt in my mind that i would have wrecked my car, and lord only knows what would have happened to my when I wrecked, going at that high of a speed. Now to any competent person doesn't my situation sound like a SAFTEY ISSUE? SO why didnt they just have a damn recall, instead of a warrenty extension? So the next day I take my car to the Ford dealership, to have it replaced. While I'm there I tell then that I expect to have my tire replaced free of charge as well, since it was destroyed due to their faulty parts. The service manager proceeds to tell me that he will have to check into the situation, and see what the cause of the blown tire was.

This really sets me off, so I tell him to open his eyes, because you could clearly see the brocken piece of metal sticking out of the side opf my tire. Even I could tell that and i know absolutely nothing about cars! So after much argument and many well placed phone calls I get my coil spring and NEW tire fixed. Another year goes by and one day out of the blue, my car startes to gush Antifreeze from underneath my car. Four days with out a car, and $350 dollars later, I am the proud owner of a new thermostat housing!

Now my latest problem started about 3 days ago, my ignition starts to lock up on me everytime i try to start my car. It takes me about 15 minutes to start my car, beacause you have to turn the steering wheel and jiggle the key at just the right time, and it SHOULD start! I tried to put graphite powder in the tumblers , but it doesnt help. So I guess that i get to go down to the dealership bright and early tomorrow and see how much this is going to cost me.

Also, did i mention that my turn signal will not turn off on its own, and that a have a constant leaking of oil from my valve cover gasket? As everyone reading this as my wittness, I WILL NEVER EVER BUT OR OWN ANOTHER FORD IN MY LIFETIME!!!

This is why the highest selling cars are Toyota and Honda! I hate not buying an American made car, but I need a car that I can depend on, not a damn lemon!! Ford should be ashamed of themselves for what they are making and selling to their consumers!

I was driving my 2001 Ford Focus when hte engine mount bolts broke allowing the engine to drop down placing all of the weight of the engine on the right front axle. As a result, the axle seperated from the transmission.

I lost control of the car on the express way. With no control of the steering or the brakes it was a miracle that I made it off the road without causing a major accident. For a 6 year old car with only 5,600 miles this never should have happend! thankfully my mother and I are o.k. despite the frightening experience.

The ignition switch for my 2004 Ford Focus (as with MANY of them, I am finding out) is defective. It periodically seizes up and I can not start my car. My complaint is that they are quite aware of this situation and do nothing about it.

I drove 60 miles to a doctors apointment. After refueling, my ignition switch seized up and I had to reschedule my apointment as well as pay auto club to send a locksmith to bail me out, 2 hours and $90 later...

My total loss on just that one day was: 1/2 tank of extra gas ($20.00), 4 lost hours (@20.00 per = $80.00) and the cost of a temporary fix ($90.00). So to date I am out $190.00 and my ignition still needs to be replaced, I figure for no less than another $100.00, bringing the total to almost $300.00 over a part that Ford probably installed for less than $10.00 to increase a profit margin.

Like many of the people listed on this website, my stepsons 2003 Ford Focus had the ignition lock up on him. This problem is frustrating, no doubt, but it does have a solution.

After the car was towed to our house by AAA I did some research on line. My wife is an automotive tech and I ran a large parts store for over 15 years. There was simply no way we were going replace the lock cylender without finding the problem. The lock cylender used by ford on all Focus models up to 2005 has a very poorly designed, light stamped metal follower that wears rapidly and bends easilly.

Once this happens the lock cylender either refuses to move or prevents the key from bieng inserted. I've had the part in my hands and know this to be true. The replacement lock cylender noted on other parts of this site... Stratec # 707592 is not only a properly designed part but, in spite of what a few locksmiths and the dealer told us on the phone... it replaces the old part with no problem at all.

The job of replacing the lock cylender is a quick and relitivle simple one with a simgle exception. The 2003 Focus on uses a anti-theft chip in the key. (blinking red light on the dash when the key is removed.) We were told by the dealer and a few locksmiths that this made the repair much more expencive but all that's required is to have your replacement lock cylender re-keyed to match the existing set. In spite of what you may have been told, the reciever in the steering colluem has nothing what-so-ever to do with replacing the lock cylender.

The entire operation from start to finish took about 25 minutes including re-keying the new cylender. The tiny metal tab used in the poorly designed OEM part has been replaced by a MUCH thicker assembly that surrounds the entire key as it enters the lock. This prevents the problem from recurring. Ford HAS realized this by the way and is now using the Strattec # 707592 lock cylender on all Focus models from 2005 on. So much for them not bieng aware of the problem...They do however continue to sell the defective lock cylenders as replacement parts for the older models.

I've had the same ignition problem several times on and off over the last month. The locksmiths advise silicone or teflon lubricant, and if not just having the dealership replace it. If anyone is doing a class-action suit again Ford let me know.
