I came upon this website while looking for information about why my 1996 Ford Explorer would go up in flames for no apparent reason. I thought my case was an isolated one and was suprised to see that so many other Ford owners experienced the same problem. I parked my car in the driveway at approx. 12:30am after returning from the evening shift at work.
I don't know what woke me and my husband up, but we both noticed an unusual bright yellow glow through the blinds of our window. I glanced at the clock and noticed the time was something after 3:00am. When I looked out of the blinds I was shocked to see flames shooting out from under the hood of my Explorer. I immediately called 911 and got our two daughters out of the house. My husband grabbed the fire extinguisher and attempted to extinguish the flames but was unsuccessful. He then tried to put out the fire with the water hose but it was getting out of control. He began hosing down the side of our house in an effort to keep the flames from catching on to it.
During that time a tire exploded and my husband had to move away from the house and the car. Our fire department arrived minutes later and extinguished the fire before it caused major damage to our home. If we hadn't woke up when we did, no telling what would have happened. I liked my Ford Explorer, but I would not have purchased it if I had known about this problem.

This is another Ford engine sparkplug blowout story. I own a 2002 F150 with 65k on it. It blew a plug about a year ago which I had repaired via a sleeve as there was no way I was gonna pay over $3000 that the dealer wanted for a head replacement. Then, it just did it again while I am on vacation in FL. Now I have a rental car expense, my vacation ruined, etc. over a problem Ford fails to fix. This complete bull and they need to be hung out to dry on it.

I like many others have had my 2002 Ford F-150 blow a spark plug out of the cylinder head. To repair it took 5 days and $3,000 for a new head. After discussing this with the service tech at my local Ford dealership he informed me that this is a very common occurance. He said that Ford had only used 3 threads in the head that failed, but are now replacing them with a 7 thread head., This tells me that they are very aware of the problem but are willing to leave their customers footing the bill. I guess the scary part about that is I still have 4 more 3 thread spark plug holes to worry about blowing out,.I absolutly feel this should be under a re-call.

A fire started in our garage around 5:10 in the afternoon after the Ford F150 had been parked inside. There were no other vehicles in the garage and I had been in the garage myself at 4:15 when I left for work. My husband returned home in the truck at 4:45, parked it and went inside. Shortly after 5:00, my son smelled smoke and discovered the fire in the garage.
Total loss of our home: 500,000 dollars. Covered by insurance. We contacted Ford and corresponded with them, but to no avail. Of several insurance inspectors, the final one settled upon said that the truck did not cause the fire (although several others came to different findings). This finding allowed the insurance to replace the house.

I purchased a 2000 Mustang GT in Florida and was driving it back home to Texas. Everything was going fine until just outside of Houston (200 miles left of a 1400 mile trip). I heard a loud pop from the front of the car, then a loud hissing that was going off and on at a rate of about 5 per second (approximation). I first thought I had blown a tire but the car wasn't handling any different. Pulling to the side of the road, listening to the noise, then opening the hood, I noted that one of the spark plugs had blown out of the engine. The coil over that plug (this car uses coils on each spark plug, not the old spark plug wires with one distributor setup) was lying on top of the engine with the plug still in the rubber boot. Long short of the story, I am, among other things, an experienced mechanic. I own a shop where we build racing Jet Ski's. I immediately knew that the plug had somehow stripped the threads in the head. I then disconnected the plug coil and the injector, put the plug/coil in the car and drove the last 200 miles without it. Of course it made lots of noise and ran poorly but it beat the promise of sitting on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck and a very expensive tow job to where ever. Upon getting back to San Antonio, I stopped by several shops looking for a Helicoil and tap to fit that sparkplug hole. I went several places and found what I needed. After tapping the hole with the new tool I bought, I taped a 3/8 tube to the end of my shop vacuum, sucked out the aluminum shavings from the cylinder, then inserted the Helicoil. (A helicoil is a spring looking set of threads that fit into a newly tapped or threaded hole to fix the damaged or missing threads that were there originally.) Since the threads had completely stripped out, I simply replaced them with the Helicoil. The whole fix took me about an hour, and now it's better than new. My total cost was $78.00. I did the repair with the HEAD ON THE ENGINE. I don't recommend a novice to do this, but any competent mechanic that has done Helicoil's before can manage it. Bottom line, Ford dealers telling anyone that to fix this problem is in the thousands of dollars is simply RIPPING YOU OFF!!!

About a year ago I bought a Lincoln Navagater with 28,000 miles on it. I bought the truck through Neil Lincoln in Medford NY. I paid $2500 for an extended warranty to cover me to 75000 miles. Well, I was going to work last week when the spark plug in my # 6 cyl. striped and blew out.Almost caused a chain 10 car or more pile up on Jerehico Tpke. Rt25 In Huntington NY. I had the car towed to the dealer. Sayville Ford ( because Neil Lincoln is now out of business ) So, I bought a LINCOLN , A warranty thru
The ford dealer and had all my service and sceduled maintaince done by Lincoln Dealer( witch is a total rip off ) But I did it because I thought If I had a problem they would fix it. The extended warranty people will not pay becauce this is a design flaw where ford only has a few threads holding the spark plug in an alum. block. So now I have a 500 dollar a mo. payment plus a rent a car for 199. a week. and ford says that they are not responsable. Well , If people were getting killed because of this it would get more attention. But then again if I died I would not be able to tell the story. So here I am pleading my case. I know that as a consumer, I did everything right. Now its time for someone to take the bull by the horns and stick up for the consumer. I just read through 89 pages with about 3 or 4 complaints per page.about 340 cases of the same thing that happened to me. The dealer at sayville ford told me to fix it right its 5800 dollars plus tax.
Now I sill have to pay 500/Mo. for this truck at least 6 K to fix it. Also I have 4 more years of payments @ 500/Mo. and on top of it I have to go out and buy another car so I can afford to work and get to work so I can live. Not to mention the total waste of time and mental stress. Can someone please step up to the plate and fight for whats right before someone gets even more hurt or even worse Killed !

Car was parked for 2 hours then caught fire. Then heavy white smoke started comming out of drivers side engin compartment. A fire extenguiser was used to put out fire. Then the battery was disconnected.
Then a tow truck was called to take it to take it to Frontier Ford. It was under extended warrenty. Then CSAA was called to cover a rental car. CSAA then investigated the fire. Was told today 12/12/06 that the fire was as described as above and that the warrenty was not going to cover the damage or labor because fire is not covered by extended warrenty. It is my feeling that since it was a Ford part that started the fire in the first place that they should cover the parts and labor. Ford specifications for oil and other specs. were followed. I do not feel that I should be held responsable for what I feel is a Ford defect.

I own a 1999 Ford F150 with the 5.4 Triton V8. I have had it for two years now and have not had any problems until earlier this year when a spark plug blew out on the drivers side. Luckily it had managed to keep the threads and I managed to put a new plug in it. I thought it was from when I had changed plugs out 3-4 months ago. About 3 weeks later it did it again and broke the power pack. So I went and bought a new plug and pack , but when I tried to put it back in, it wouldnt tighten. THE THREADS WERE STIPPED!!! I was shocked when I looked online and found that there was 100s of cases of this. I called Ford and they denied knowing anything and said the only thing would be a new head, expensive one at that.
My truck sat for a week while I looked for other resources that was capable and willing to do a repair. I finally found a shop that would put a heli-coil, i think that is how it goes in it. Because of the plug number, they could get to it easy, so it cost me around $300, alot cheaper than a head. I have not had a problem with it since, although I have had to tighten another spark plug repeatedly after noticing an unusual sound during startup. Luckily I manage to hear it before it blows out. My wife doesnt like to drive it now because of the what if and I dont know what to hear for, so I am thinking of getting rid of it now. I would recommend it if you can find a shop that is willing to do the work, because some won't.

On Oct. 9, 2006 our 2000 Ford Expedition caught fire in our driveway. The fire totaled our Expedition, heat damaged our Ford Explorer sitting next to it, burned our garage on our new house, and smoke damaged our new fence that was less than 3 months old. The fortunate side of this story is a neighbor saw the back of our house and car was on fire and alerted us in time to get out before our house burned down and possibly killed us.
The fire department told us of a recall, my husband nor I had received any letters of a recall. We luckily had full insurance on our 2000 Expedition, but had to pay three different deductibles totalling $4600. Our totally burned truck sat in our driveway next to our burned house for over a month waiting on FORD, who NEVER CAME to evaluate the situation (we were informed by our insurance company they would). The bright side of this story is we are alive, but want to inform as many people as we can of this story so it doesn't happen to anyone else.
The economic damage was $3600.00 deductible on our house, $500.00 for a totalled 2000 Ford Expedition, $500.00 deductible for a Ford Explorer Truck. The countless hours off dealing with contractors, and the emotional stress this has put on our lives.

Further, I was asking for a modest accomodation in purchasing a new Foprd vehicle; a situation that would kept me as a Ford customer. She then over corrected the car and slammed head first into a larger tree. She never hit the brakes and was estimated at a going speed of 40-45mph. The airbags never deployed. We were told that it was because she hit the tree on the front right side, where the passenger side headlight is. It is obvious from looking at the car that it was a direct hit head on slightly to the passenger side. She put her head through the windshield and broke the steering wheel. She received a fractured skull, bleeding on her brain, shattered femur (just had her knee completely replaced 6 months ago), a bruised lung and numerous cuts, scrapes and bruises. I frantically called the fire department back and asked that they hurry as the truck was in full flames. The siding on my house began to melt and the garage door as well by the time the fire dept. arrived. I heard loud popping sounds as the windows were blowing out and the engine blowing up. It was horrible. The truck was originally purchased by my husband who passed suddenly 10 months prior. Our 2001 Ford F150 caught on fire in a repair shop in Aiken on the night of July 3rd, 2006. Prior to this happening to us we were completely unaware that there was a problem with certain Ford vehicles. I heard today that a Lincoln Navigator(made by Ford) burned a home down in Columbia, SC over the weekend and also a F150 caught on fire in a bank parking lot today in Aiken, SC. Something has to be done to protect everyone...its not just the owners that can be injured.
My truck had not been worked on as it was towed to the shop Friday June 30th and I told the shop owner to wait until after the holiday weekend. My truck ignited on its own and was a total loss. It had blown a 5 amp fuse and we wanted to know why that was happening. The fire also spread to a separate vehicle in the shop and it was also a total loss. The repair shop has been unable to open to this date as we are trying to find out how to get Ford to be responsible since it is a defect in a part that is in certain Ford vehicles. The shop owner can't even get Ford to come look at the vehicle..but we received a letter that the truck could not be moved until they sent someone to 'investigate'.
The shop has suffered over $150,000 worth of damage including all computer systems, roof, etc. There were also several other vehicles in the shop that suffered damage as well. I have spoken with Ford and been told that 'anytime you operate a gasoline powered vehicle with a hot engine to expect a fire'...ok....don't think so....but my engine was not hot...the truck had not been operated in several days.
I also have a Ford 2003 Excursion that has a recall on it...I've just found out....I am terrified to have it near my home or put my children inside of it. Since this has happened to us we have become aware through the internet that this is an ongoing problem with several of the vehicles that Ford makes....and even if you don't own one..it could still affect you if you park near one or your vehicle is in the shop next to one. If you can't assist us, could you tell us where to go to get someone to help us. By the grace of God, our truck was not in our garage or we would have lost our home....as some people have already.
Fortunately for us, we had full insurance coverage on the truck that burned. We are still out our deductible and personal items that were in the truck and items that were installed on the truck such as Flowmaster muffler, european tail lights, and we had just spent over $1300 to service the transmission, install new front and rear rotors, clean the fuel injectors, etc. We would not have spent that on it if we had known this was going to happen. We are also out the use of our 2003 Ford Excursion as I am now afraid to have it near my home or allow my children to ride in it. It is a very expensive lawn ornament. I would like for Ford to buy it back as I can not in good conscience sell it to someone knowing there is a possibility of it catching on fire as well.

On the 26th of June my sons Ford F150 while sitting parked caught on fire. Luckily the fire was put out in time. It was identified (by Fairway Ford) that the cruise control device was the cause of the fire.
But upon EMAILING someone at Ford Motor Company my son receives a letter stating that because he had received 3 recall notices that, I quote Ford declines to provide any assistance at this time. Now mind you my son only received 2 recall notices. The 1st (dated November 05) was a postcard simply stating the recall on his 98 Ford F150 however, and I quote again, the availability of service parts has been delayed until Feb 2006.
The second letter (dated April 06) arrived reminding him that his 98 F-150 had not completed the recall. My son does not use his cruise control device as he lives and works in town. He never knew or thought he was putting others (who may have been riding with him) in danger because he DIDN'T use the cruise control or that he was putting his truck and himself at risk by simply driving his truck. After this happened and doing research on the Internet, I see that he is a very lucky young man. This still does not excuse the fact that there was never any mention in the recall of need for immediate attention or the risk of fire starting even if he didn't use the cruise control device or even if it was parked, especially since it took them 6 months (Nov 05 to April 06) to notify him again regarding the recall. I believe that by Ford sending the letter (also speaking with Fairway Ford Service Manager) that they are admitting that the cruise control device is what started the fire.
I cannot believe however that they can just deny service because my son did not have his vehicle fixed. I am thinking that you could have a recall item fixed up to ten years after the recall came out if it has not been preformed on the vehicle. I am very distraught as is my son. I would greatly appreciate any help I could get with this matter.

While my car was parked in my driveway with the car not running, I hear an explosion. I find my car is resting on the rim. When I take the tire off, I realize that the coil spring snapped into my tire and completely demolished the inside of the tire.
I call the dealership and they tell me to come in because I will get a free tire and new springs for the front of the car. When I get there, they find that that the free springs and tire replacement is only for model 2001 and previous years. Sounds kind of fishy to me because though my car is a model 2002, I bought the car in October of 2001.
Someone should look into this for the safety of other drivers on the road. Myself and my family would be dead if this happened while driving. I am extremely concerned for the safety of others. I called Ford customer service who said they wouldn't do anything except report it.

Three weeks ago at 1:30am, after the vehicle had been sitting for at least 4 hours, our dog awoke us to a huge fire in our yard. The fire department ruled it an electrical issue with the Ford Windstar.
Apparently, not the first they have seen. I researched a little and found that there was a recall on this van in September/October 2001 due to potential fire hazard with the windshield wipers. I am not sure if the dealer checked on recall before selling. If so, could they be somewhat responsible?

It wasn't until later on, after having my face stitched back together, that my parents told me what had happened. When I started having my seizure, I stiffened up. The only reason I know this is because I have epilepsy so it wasn't my first seizure. Anyway, when I stiffened up, I stomped on the gas pedal. I was going at a high rate of speed when I rear-ended an SUV. After hitting the SUV twice, the SUV swerved off the road. Still pressing on the gas pedal, I got going at a high rate of speed again and ran off the road, missed a power pole by an inch or two and hit a large haystack.
My dog and I were not so lucky. My seat belts and my airbags did not work. Why? I have no idea. What I do know is that the police said that I was going around 80 mph when I hit the haystack. And the few people that actually got to see this happen said that when I hit the haystack, the back end of my car actually picked up off the ground and bounced. My face went through the windshield, and my chest pushed the entire steering column into the dash. I can't even imagine what that little dog went through. Due to my wreck, I have lost my job. My car was totaled so I have no car, and my face had to be stitched back together. Also, my chest and back hurt so bad that I can barely walk. I have to sleep sitting up and at times I can barely breathe. There is one more thing I wanted to let you know. I already contacted Ford Motor about this and I received a letter from ** with Consumer Affairs. And in my letter, she stated that my airbags are designed to deploy under certain conditions. Well I would hate to see those conditions because I don't think you would live to tell about it. I had three hard blows to the front end of my car. My wife purchased a new 1998 Ford Escort. It is now 2006. Her car had been making funny clanking bumping sounds and we could not find anything. So today when she brought it to her mechanic she told him to look for anything that could be making the noise, He found that both rear coil springs had fractured and advised us to call Ford and see if there was a recall for the coil springs. Ford said there was no recall but I should bring the vehicle to the ford dealer.
The Mechanic stated that the vehicle should not be driven since the broken springs could puncture the tires and result in an accident or injury, so for the safety of my family I told him to replace the springs. When I got home I searched for this information and found your website had information about fractured springs on Ford vehicles.

The same cruise control/brake switch part failure causing fires in F-150 trucks is used on 95 Windstars. I experienced a fire in the connection from corrossion and leaking within the switch. There were no indications that a dangerous fire causing leak was occuring. There was no leaking brake fluid anywhere. Fortunately, due to wet weather and cold temperatures the fire was contained to the switch plug and wires. Had the failure occured in summer rather than February, we would have lost the vehicle to a fire, perhaps while driving at highway speed.
I went to the local dealer and informed them what happened and requested the warranty for F-150 models be used to cover this obvious failure. The customer Rep at the Dealer (Univeristy Ford) was very helpful and called the local (Atlanta, GA) area Ford Rep who declined the request. The danger here is that there are thousands of 95 Windstars transporting children and driven by unsuspecting Moms and Dads that are at risk of death from the fire that will erupt due to these failing switches. Rather than limiting to certain models, Ford should be replacing these switches in every model that used the switch.

The fire was extinguished with the garden hose, but not before it did damage to the new 2006 (3 week new) vehicle sitting next to it.
It also melted the vinyl siding on the house, which is only 4 years old. Shortly after the fire was out, the fire department got there and put out any remaining smoke. When asked about recalls or if this was covered under warranty due to the year of the truck and where the fire started, they responded that there is NO recall, and they would not cover anything under warranty???? This is actually the second Ford truck in about six months that I have had catch fire????? The first was an F-350 that I used as one of my work trucks. My 97 Ford F-150 had an under-hood electrical fire in front of my son's school while it was parked. No CHILDREN, vehicles or property was damaged and no one was in it. I just had the truck repaired the day before to try to find out why the fuse controlling the power steering and ac unit was always shorting out. While I watched my truck burn, the school's staff said Ford was having trouble with under-hood fires and I remembered I just got a recall letter about something about the power steering so when I got home I read it again and found myself the victim of the recall.
I did not have a chance to get the truck into the dealership to fix the problem and frankly I wouldn't accept the way they chose to fix it. I never have dealerships work on my vehicles when they are out of warranty because I never get the best price or workmanship so I take it to other qualified mechanics and I am much happier with their work. After the accident, I was going to get another F-150 but not after I read about all the hardships and losses so many people have suffered. I also suffered because I wasn't ready to get rid of this truck yet and I was faced with the sudden need to purchase another vehicle -- an expense I didn't plan for.
Where did Ford's quality go? My grandmother had an old Ford pickup with a straight-6 engine and it never died and I can't tell you the year but this thing is old. My truck wasn't made up to the standards that Ford used to have and frankly I do not trust them to make anything worth buying due this under-hood fire hazard. A truck is supposed to be made to last for years and be a good workhorse for the family that owns them.
Like so many other people I called Ford to tell them the news and they suggested my insurance co will handle the claim however I only had liability on the truck because of its age so I am not getting reimbursed for this loss. The day after the fire I told a neighbor who also had an F-150 about the fire problem and he said he had it fixed 6 months ago but that his Dad lost a Ford Bronco to an electrical fire. So there is defiantly a pattern here that needs to be looked into.

Then he went on to explain that these particular cars had a recall for this very problem on the front end in 2004 and spring guards were installed to prevent injury. Coincidently, he has heard about a growing concern regarding the recent failing of back springs. At 12:30 AM, my wife and I heard a noise, looked out the blinds to find fire coming from drivers side edges of hood. Me and my son ran out to get a garden hose as my wife called 911. As I was passing by the vehicle the paint was beginning to burn off directly above the brake booster.
I began spraying the vehicle through the radiator grill, as my son was trying to pop the hood. I sprayed around the edges, flames were coming out mostly from the drivers side. Then the drivers side plastic tire well burned out enough, I was able to get water underneath the hood. The fire department arrived at 12:34 AM. They popped the hood using their cable tool and began to apply water. Luckily the fire was extinguished within about 15 minutes, due to the fire department is only a couple of blocks away.
Because of the quick response of extinguishing the fire, you can definitely tell where the fire originated. The air filter on the right-hand side suffered heat damage, but were not destroyed. On the left side of the engine the rubber hoses and fuel lines were still intact and not burned. The only thing that was completely destroyed was the brake fluid reservoir, and the cruise control switch. When the firemen examined it, they thought it may have come from the wiring harness, they had never seen the brake fluid reservoir catch on fire.
The fuel filter had been changed 2 weeks prior, and we thought that may have something to do with it. The mechanic that had done the work, came out to examine the damage. He pointed out the fuel filter was located underneath the frame and not in the engine compartment. Two weeks after our fire, FORD came out with the 1999-2000 model recall on the cruise control switch. At that time I went to the FORD house to enquire if my could have been related. I was told the 1996 had a completely different set up than the 1999-2000 models. They said my fire must have been a "freak accident".
I only had liability insurance on this vehicle. Due to the extensive damage, I sold it for salvage only. 9/7/05 we saw on the local news, FORD had issued another recall. This time our vehicle was included in the 1994-2002 recall. A number was provided to call FORD and file a claim. I called FORD and was told to get a copy of the official fire report, and proof from my insurance, that I owned the vehicle at the time of the loss.
Two days later, I was contacted by FORD's legal department, they told me to tow the vehicle to the local FORD dealership at my expense. I told them the vehicle was at the wrecking yard being salvaged, due to the 8 months that had passed. They told me they would not help me, because I had tampered with the vehicle. They then told me their official statement was " WE ARE SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS". I then told them, that was not satisfactory, I was going to contact our local FORD dealership. I was told not to contact anyone, FORD was going to send me an official letter stating "WE ARE SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS".

According to the Fire department the fire started under the hood in the driver side and it is not the first F-150 fire call they attended this year. Sometimes I park my truck inside the garage, what would it happen if it catch fire inside the house? If Ford knows about the dangers, why is not recalling this truck as well? Are they playing with the numbers of risk management as they did with the Pinto's accident causing deaths when they decided to leave the car alone knowing it had a great probbability to explote if rear ended because it would cost less pay for the law suits than the recall? I lost my truck today but even this will put me on financial troubles and distress but it could be worse -- me or my family could have been injured or killed!

I bought a used 1997 Ford F-150. It appeared to be a good used vehicle with low miles on it, so I went ahead and made the purchase. On July 15, 2005 I went out to start the vehicle and take it to work. When I started it and then when I attempted to put into reverse, it would not come out of gear. The "ABS" light was on and would not allow the truck to be taken out of "Park". I had it towed in for service. The maintenance department told me that I had a "Bad Switch" and that it needed to be replaced. I got the truck back and everything appeared to be working fine. Then, on July 19, 2005 the truck did the same thing. This time the maintenance department told me that I had wiring that had melted and shorted out. I got the work completed. Everything appeared to be working fine.
On Thursday August 4, 2005 I was leaving the main gate at NAS Lemoore and the brake and ABS lights both came on. I continued on my way home. I parked the vehicle and then proceeded on inside to call for a ride to work the next day since I was going to need to take the truck in service for a third time. While I was inside, the truck caught on fire.
I heard sirens outside, so I came out and most of my engine compartment was already gone. The fire came through the windshield and was beginning to come into the cab of the truck. My truck was noted as being "totaled". My insurance company has pretty much taken care of the claim and truck loan, but nothing is being done about the Ford Mechanics that actually did the work on the vehicle.
Someone needs to pursue this and launch an investigation into Ford itself. They are selling unsafe vehicles to the public. My 5 year old son and I were in the vehicle just minutes before the fire happened. We both could of been seriously injured or even killed. I would like to see something done about this.

It has sat there waiting for someone to decide who is going to pay for this.
I have been told by Stephanie at Ford Consumer Affairs Division that I am responsible for this repair bill of over $2000 as my vin number did not come up on her computer therefore, Ford is not responsible. My 1998 Expedition had an electrical fire (while in my garage) on 8-3-05 about 90 minutes after I came home from work. The key was not in the car. Luckily, my son came home, opened the garage and saw smoke coming out. I immediately tried to back the truck out of the garage, but the brake pressure fuse had blown (due to the electrical fire) and the vehicle was stuck in Park. Thank God the fire went out by itself and only ruined the Speed Control Deactivator wire harness - burned it up.
Ford would not replace the parts at No Charge, since the "recall was only for the 2000 and 2001 models", although I have read that it is the same part on my 98 model!! There have been many fires reported on 98 Expeditions, and the National Hwy Traffic Safety Admin has an "investigation" open on this right now. I would think that Ford would at least replace the parts for free for those affected, especially since I was at risk of losing my vehicle, my home, and possibly human life !! I currently have two Fords (SUVs), but based on the way Ford treats thier customers, I will not buy another one !

My Toyota's passenger side was COMPLETELY melted. There is not any plastic that wasn't melted left on it.
After reading so many complaints on this site, I can't believe that they have not recalled the 1995-2003 (excluding the 2000 recalled vehicles) Fords that have been having this problem. Apparently Ford doesn't care to much about their consumers. Kind of made the guy wish he had bought a Chevy! LOL! I hope that Ford realizes they need to PONY UP!
I did some research and discovered that the part that is causing this is the Speed Control Deactivation Switch, AKA Brake Pressure Switch. It is said to always be powered by current from the battery, and is mounted above flammable reservoirs of brake fluid. If certain conditions occurr, a fire can break out, even when the engine had been turned off, and in some cases, idle for DAYS!

My wife and I went through our home, we did not check the closed garage, we did not detect any smoke or smell. My wife stepped outside our front door and came back in telling me she could smell rubber burning. I followed her out and looked around the home. When I approached the garage black smoke began to roll out of the top of the door. I told my wife to call 911 and raced back into my home to the interior door leading to the garage.
I dropped to my knees and opened the door with black smoke rolling into the hall. I reached up and hit the open switch for the garage door, closed the hall door and went back outside. As the door opened I could hear cracking and popping. Dropped down to the driveway and saw fire dripping down under the engine compartment of the Ford truck. I got inside the vehicle and tried to start it to back it out of the garage when the engine compartment blew. I exited the truck and closed the garage door.
The fire consumed the truck, my wife's Ford Tarus, and approximate twenty-five percent of the home. There is extensive smoke and water damage throughout the structure and heavy loss to none-recoverable personal possessions. I had heard that there was going to be a recall on Ford vechiles and that Ford would be contacting those owners affected by mail. I have never received any contact from the company.
The emotional stress on my wife is requiring medical attention. We have lost none-replacable items relating to out children, family, friends and almost twenty years of marriage that were part of our lives and heritage. We had been in our new home only one year and viewed it as the home in which we would retire. Now we are starting over. It is a shame that corporations are so cavalier in their approach to consumers. I have driven Fords for over forty years, never again.

We owned a 1986 F-150 Ford Lariat pickup, extended cab. It caught fire in our driveway on October 17, 1996. The ignition switch had melted inside the steering column and we had no way of knowing, and it burst into flames and burned to the ground. Just prior to it burning, our children were in that truck and would have been when it caught fire, were it not for a last-minute decision to leave them with a sitter.
Ford had a recall at that time for that exact problem. When we contacted Ford, they lied to us on every level in and out of the state of Alaska, and refused to help us in anyway. We just saw a report on CNN just this minute and Ford's statement to a family that just suffered a fatality as a result of their Ford burning, was exactly what they carelessly said to us 8 years ago. They are still unwilling to deal honestly with the public. We took a loss on our truck as it was paid for and we only carried liability insurance, but the point was, they lied to us and were unwilling to help us, the consumer trusting their products. For this reason, we will never own a Ford again, they are not safe.
As it burned, the electric door locks were shorting out and the doors would not open. The entire dash caught fire within itself around the steering column, the fire could not be reached from the engine compartment, and the cab filled with smoke that was deadening. Then the cab burst into flames and burned very quickly, later spreading to the engine compartment under the hood. I am writing this to let others know, so that some poor unsuspecting mother does not leave her dear little children in her Ford thinking they are safe, and it catch fire and they lose their lives.
Only 3 minutes was all it took for the cab to be on fire, with the door locks shorted out and the doors unable to be opened. Please publish this for others to see for their protection? We tell everyone we see with children in a Ford ranging from 1986-1991 as that was the range of the actual recall years for the ignition switch. Our truck burned due to the ignition switch problem.

On Feb. 9, 2005 we purchased a 1994 Ford Explorer XLT 4x4 from an independent dealer in Chattanooga, Tennessee. We made minor repairs to the air conditioner, brakes, interior etc. On June 8, 2005 we were on a short vacation in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. As we were driving down a one lane, one way road, it felt like the transmission slipped. My husband pulled over and as soon as he came to a stop the entire interior of the Explorer filled with smoke.
My daughter and myself jumped out and as I stepped back I could see fire falling from under the SUV. My husband, thinking that transmission fluid from the transmission had caught fire under the SUV rolled back. When he was back far enough that I could see the front of the Explorer flames had already started shooting out of the grill. We immediately ran away, for fear that it would explode. Within 5 minutes the entire Explorer, inside and out was totally englufed in flames.
When the fire department arrived and tried to spray water on it there was a small explosion. It looked as if someone had hundreds of sparklers going off. They later informed us that they have never had this happen with a Ford product, only with Volkswagen. They went on to say that the reason for the explosion and all the sparks was magnesium in the motor. They were not aware that Ford Motor Company used this in their automobiles.
I think Ford Motor Company should be FORCED to produce a more safe automobile. We were very very lucky. The next family may not be as lucky. I think the only thing that kept the gas tank from exploding was the fact that we had just stopped and filled it up with gas. I believe had it been half full, which would allowed the tank to be half full of fumes it would have exploded causing an undetermined amount of damage.

I was thankful that I was there and that my children were not with me as they were about an hour before.
I read the story you have on this site from Derek of Omaha. That is exactly what happened to me. To the tee that is! I did notice about an hour before that my RPM needle bottomed out past ten and the motor never reved or anything. As fast as it did that it went right back to normal. I just spent 1000.00 getting maint. things done like new windshield, tires, front end allignment and shocks. I love that truck and I had to go buy a new one with a bigger note. I wasn't planning on having a new car for awhile.
I am glad that we were not in the truck but I am angry at Ford. This is not the consumer's fault. I am still paying on that truck due to I didn't have GAP insurence, and paying on a new truck too.
