Our editor’s take

AutoNation’s extended warranties can be a solid option if you buy a car from one of its dealerships. However, some of its competitors, like the bigger nationwide warranty companies, may be able to offer better, more convenient service experiences.

About AutoNation extended warranties

AutoNation, headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is one of the largest car dealership groups in the country, with hundreds of locations nationwide. The company has been in business since 1991, and it has sold and serviced millions of vehicles in that time.

AutoNation’s size allows it to offer several benefits to its customers, including an extended warranty program with several tiers of coverage and add-on options.

AutoNation extended warranty availability

There are no limits to where you can live or drive with an AutoNation extended warranty on your car.

That said, the only way to purchase one is to talk to an AutoNation dealership during the car-buying process. (In comparison, it’s usually easier to get on the phone with one of the more well-known national warranty providers, especially if you don’t live near an AutoNation location.)

AutoNation extended warranty coverage and plans

AutoNation extended warranty customers can choose from five plans:

  • Engine
  • Powertrain
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Platinum

These five coverage levels range from basic powertrain protection to the most comprehensive coverage in the Platinum plan.

AutoNation also offers several supplemental coverage options with its warranty plans to help keep your vehicle running and looking great for the duration of your ownership.

  • Tire and wheel protection: AutoNation’s tire and wheel protection package covers flat tires and wheel damage due to road hazards, which can include debris, glass, metal and more. This add-on plan has no deductible and includes up to $100 of towing expenses.
  • Guaranteed asset protection (GAP): This plan provides coverage for the difference between the market value of your vehicle and what you still owe on any loan you used to purchase it in case of an accident, theft or natural disaster. In many cases, buyers purchasing a vehicle with a loan can end up owing more than the vehicle is worth, making GAP a vital add-on.
  • Excess wear and tear: If you lease your vehicle, the condition when you turn it in must meet certain standards. AutoNation’s excess wear and tear coverage protects you from paying for things like dents and damage to upholstery, covering up to $5,000. It has zero deductible and is available on leases of up to 72 months.
  • Windshield protection: Windshield chips, cracks and other damage can add up to costly repairs. Windshield Protection provides coverage for glass damage, and AutoNation’s plan comes with zero out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Theft protection: AutoNation’s Theft Protection plan adds traceable codes to some frequently stolen vehicle components that law enforcement can use. Beyond theft protection, the plan covers identity theft for the duration of the warranty plan.
  • Appearance protection: Appearance protection comes with paint, fabric and leather protection to preserve the look of your car’s exterior and interior. There is zero deductible for repairs or replacement of covered items.

AutoNation extended warranty coverage limits

AutoNation’s vehicle protection plans do not cover routine maintenance services (like oil changes and tire rotations), and they do not cover wear items, like brake pads, tires, windshield wipers, filters, fluids and other parts designed to wear over time.

AutoNation limits rental car reimbursements to $35 per day for a maximum of 10 days, and trip interruption coverage tops out at $200 per day for up to five days.

AutoNation extended warranty benefits

AutoNation’s warranty plans all come with roadside assistance, rental car coverage, and trip interruption/travel expense coverage at no extra charge.

AutoNation extended warranty policies

AutoNation provides information on some excluded components, noting that normal maintenance parts like spark plugs, ignition wires, filters, batteries, coolant and other fluids are not covered. The company also does not cover tires, wheels, wheel covers, exterior body panels and other components.

AutoNation extended warranty FAQ

How does an AutoNation extended warranty work?

AutoNation offers warranty coverage for vehicles purchased at its dealerships, which you can add at the point of sale. The company operates hundreds of dealerships, so the experience and ease of purchasing an extended warranty may vary greatly between locations.

How do I file a claim with AutoNation?

AutoNation will only cover claims if the owner has called the plan administrator to get prior authorization for the repair. Extended warranty coverage can be very specific about what is and is not covered. AutoNation may require you to get an inspection or diagnostic evaluation from a certified repair facility to determine if the plan will cover the repair.

Is AutoNation legit?

AutoNation is one of the largest and most well-known automotive dealer groups in the country. Though its warranty site isn’t the most informative, it is legitimate and covers thousands of drivers across the country.

The absolute worst experience I have ever had with any car dealership. I buy at least 2 vehicles per year for business and personal use. I am 55 years old so that is a lot of vehicles over the years. I broke down and bought wheel and tire coverage on a recent purchase. Wife hit a pothole that cut the sidewall and bent the wheel. It was not safe to drive so I just replaced the tire immediately until I could get the claim submitted.

I kept the original tire to show damage and left the bent wheel on the car since it was a special order and could not be replaced immediately. After 5 days, 3 trips back to the dealership and numerous hateful phone calls they denied the claim and told me it holds air so what's the problem? You ** - it holds air because it is a brand-new tire that I just replaced. I hope they go broke - and they will. Just watch. Never do any kind of business when them - crooks, liars and thieves.

Worst experience I have EVER had. Had many paperwork screw ups (6 trips to dealership trying to fix)...my name and city misspelled, my trade in mileage upped by 110k, no actual purchasing documents (recd on 6/27/25 bought car on 6/5/25). Worst of all I was sold unneeded protection plans without bring told that I would have to go to THIS dealership for service? Also not told the actual costs!! The Finance girl knew this was a 60 mile round trip plus tolls to this dealership and that I barely put 3k miles a year on my car? I was trading in a 2016 with 39800 miles! She messed up a digit (I was told) on my trade in paperwork and it "unwounded" my "deal" and I was not notified?? I have been trying to cancel these contracts since 6/13/25....multiple phone calls and emails....which now go unanswered!! Next step is small claims court for $6839.00 plus the 4.9% interest I have been paying!! I should not have to go through this!!

Sold vehicle before the expiration of the extended warranty and tried to connect with Autonation for a refund on unused balance. I must say experience to get hold of somebody has been horrible that I would not recommend this extended warranty, never had a claim.
