Prices for grooming should be posted. I went for a simple scissor trim and wash. I was charged for the grooming, $6 brush and $17 milk bath. I never requested a milk bath. I thought brushing was part of the grooming. Btw, the dog was not excessively tangled. I also had another dog groomed which I washed at home. I also had her nails clipped at the vet the day before. They charged me $16 extra for special handling. The groomer said she had to call someone to answer the phone. Really! At Petco, my appointment for this dog was at 9am. There was no other dog in the place. She got right to work on cutting my dog, then afterwards she bathed my second dog. They credited me back the $22 overcharge, but if I hadn't said anything, they would have gotten away with it.
Consumer Complaints & Reviews

I will start at the beginning on 4/16/12. I went into PETCO Poughkeepsie, NY next to Shop Rite to get a few fish to add to my tank, which was already established with some fish from another store. Those fish were in the tank for about two weeks and fine. So I go into PETCO and their "usual fish guy" called out sick. So I got a guy who was just, "tossed over here". I go ahead and buy five fishes for my tank. There were two other customers there who knew about fish and they also help me not get any "aggressive fish" that would eat my other fish. I get the five fish and get home and everything seems fine.
I look at my receipt because I always hold onto receipts. I was charged for six fishes. The sixth was an Oscar Tiger, the wrong fish. If you have anything smaller then this fish will eat anything that fits in its mouth. I wait one day because I couldn't make it in the same day for the return. When I get up in the morning, one of the fish, the Opaline Gourami, is acting weird. Anyone who owns fish know when they are going to die, they swim funny kind of drift in the water, etc.
So I return the Opaline Gourami and tell them about the fish I was charged for that I never got, I get that return as well. Ok so here's where the issues begin. Every two days after this, one of the fish I got from PETCO died. They test my water and the eater had a slight ammonia level, not enough to kill the fish according the "regular fish guy". This is what he told me every time I return a fish and I get my refund in cash. So three of the five fish I bought from PETCO were dead.
On 4/25/12, I wake up in the morning and the Bamboo Shrimp is dead at the bottom. I have no clue how long it was dead in there, I bring it in to return it and the same fish guy was there and some girl associate. He has the girl test my water while he go to other customers. She test my water with a PH strip then dumps it out and seconds later says my ammonia levels are too high and it killed the shrimp. So she calls a manager over who give me a long "spiel" about PH levels and don't change my water, blah, blah. So I leave. Luckily, in my car, I had a water bottle full of the tank water and bring it to the "regular fish guy" to test. He test it from the second sample I bought in and said it hasn't enough ammonia to kill the shrimp but they are very delicate and shouldn't have been put in your tank in the first place. Remember how I said they had some random employee there who didn't know jack about fish.
I also forgot to mention when I went to my car for the second water sample, I go back in and the girl that tested the water before saw me and ran off. So the same manager comes and gets different info from the fish guy then he agrees the return with nothing else said.
Finally, I go to the cash register with the receipt that was approve for the fish return and the associate up there said, "I can't get cash back for the returned fish because it was a credit card." I told her every time she said Credit Card, it was a Debit Card. I got cash back on the four other fish returns I did and didn't know what the problem was this time. She calls for that same manager that said I couldn't get a return for the fish. Then 5 minutes later said I can return it. I had to show her how to do a cash back return.
In conclusion, I will not be returning to PETCO anywhere. There is a pet store in the lot across the street by Bob's and Ashley furniture I will be returning to, which somehow all the fish I got from there are all alive and well. On top of that, the light for the tank I bought is short and the stand is missing two cross beams it needs from the tank. They wouldn't take it back so I can get at least 10% off on it. So of the things I bought from PETCO, 95% of them have had some issue; from dead fish, to getting money back to faulty parts and to missing parts in products. All I have to say is beware and save your receipts.
In December 2010, my husband and I bought a Boston Terrier pup from the Milford, CT store and it was a terrible experience. Our poor pup was given a clean bill of health by the vet that the store recommended to us, and lo and behold, 3 days after his "clean" bill of health, he had pneumonia. $4,000, many vet visits, tears and 6 months later, we nursed him back to health, despite my vet (who is well-renowned in the area and treats our other, very healthy, dog as well) thinking that we were fighting a losing battle.
We filed a complaint with the company and tried to get reimbursed for some of the costs of saving our baby's life, but nothing. We were basically dismissed and told that we could give him back and get a new dog, but then what would happen to our poor sick baby that we had become attached to? Would they just let him die?
It was an overall deplorable experience and the only good thing that came out of this was that we were able to save our puppy's life and now he is a very happy and cherished member of our family. I highly recommend that you avoid the Pet Company at all costs, for the sake of the neglected animals it sells as well as your wallets.

Extremely Poor Customer Service - The Petco store in Upland Square, Pottstown, PA have been short-staffed in their grooming department for months and are rarely open past 3. Fridays, they are usually there until 7 pm. On Friday, March 30, 2012, I called the store by phone to ensure that someone would be there to do nail clipping. I was told that they would be leaving at 5:30 that day. I arrived at the store between 5:15 and 5:20 and was greeted by ** who immediately asked me if I had proof of my dog's rabies vaccination. I told her I had no idea that it was expired as he had it done in the fall of 2010 at their store and that it was a 2-year vaccine. She stated, "Do you have proof of his rabies vaccine? It expired in February." I told her had they been open on the numerous occasions that I had been in to have nails clipped, I would have known that they needed it and brought it with me. I told her to contact Gilbertsville Veterinary and that they have Francis's records. When they were contacted, the expiration is clearly noted as September 2012. His prior vaccination(s) were done at Petco and they were provided with the paperwork the day of his shots.
My dog was then taken back to have his nails clipped and I was handed the bill. I proceeded to the checkout where no one was at either register. I stood at the window next to the registers the entire time he was having his nails clipped. No one ever came to the registers. When he was done, I went to the grooming department and went to take my dog and to continue the shopping that I needed to do, which, had I done it in store, would have totaled over $100. At this time, ** refused to give my dog back to me. I was told that she would not return him until the grooming/nail trim was paid for. I told her I had additional shopping to do and that there was no one at the register. I would pay for everything at once as I have done every other time I have gotten his nails trimmed. Again, she refused to return my dog to me and was very snippy and rude. Someone finally came to the register and I paid the $10 nail trim fee and told the person that I wanted to speak to a manager.
I stood and waited a few minutes and no one came out to speak to me. I finally walked over to the office and spoke with a subject by the name of ** who I explained everything to. I told him that I wanted the manager of the store to contact me and that I wanted the 800 number for Petco. I was told there is no 800 number for Petco. I then asked for their corporate number so that I could file a complaint. I was given a phone number and again he told me that they have no toll free number.
Upon exiting the store, ** was sitting in her chair at the grooming check-in. I stopped and told her that I have never in my life been treated in such a manner and that I was not happy at all with the customer service or lack thereof. She rolled her eyes and told me that they are short-staffed and she was sorry that they weren't open longer for my convenience. I told her that they've been short-handed for months now and that wasn't my issue on that particular day. My issue was that they held my dog hostage until I paid a $10 bill for nail clipping when I had a lot of other shopping to do in the store. She continued to have an attitude with me and stated that it is their policy to have it paid upfront. I told her I was fine with that; however, no one was at the register while the nails were getting done and that I had other shopping to do in the store. I told her that I would pay for everything together as I have done numerous times in the past. And again, she rolled her eyes and said that they don't do it that way.
She was extremely rude and totally out of line. The store manager called me the next morning and I discussed the ordeal with her. She stated that she viewed and listened to the tapes for that date/time and agreed that it was a bad situation all the way around. I will never set foot in that store again. I have been a customer in that store since it opened and have spent a lot of money there on both of my pets. Both myself and my dog were treated very poorly and I feel this is totally unacceptable. The manager offered nothing as a solution or remedy for what I was put through. She stated that she spoke with **, but there was nothing else she could do about the situation. I left that store that day visibly upset. I was so upset that I was actually shaking when I left there. I drove over 5 miles to Pet Value where I purchased my pet food/supplies. Petco has lost a valuable customer. I will never set foot in the Pottstown store again and I am extremely upset and dissatisfied with the treatment that I received.

My 58-year old mother was told leave the store when she did not know how to care for a gold fish she wanted to purchase. She was accompanied by my 8-year old nephew who has been unable to comprehend or dismiss the horrible treatment he witnessed. My mother, who stands at less than 5 feet tall, asked to be informed on how to care for the fish and she was once again told to leave the store. After contacting the store, as well as emailing and calling their main number, Petco did their best to ignore me. They did not return any calls or emails. I called their store once again, only to find that this had happened to another customer as well. The store manager justifies the treatment and said that they would not sell the goldfish to my mother because she would not buy a fish tank. This is not our first fish: we have a tank!

My husband and I bought a 6 gallon fish tank and wanted to put in a few tetra, so we went to PETCO on Sunday, 2/26/12. When we went to the fish, I wanted 4-5 neon tetra and was told by the lady that I didn't want that many to start with, so we only got 3. She also said that since it was a newer tank, that I wanted to put a little bit of the water from the bag in the tank with the fish. As soon as I got home, I noticed that the tetra had no tail fins. Needless to say, 3 hours later, all 3 fish were dead so we brought them back that night and was told that we shouldn't have started our tank with neon tetra because they are not a hardy fish. The woman who told us to put the water from the bag into our tank was completely wrong.
The manager came out and gave us a refund on the tetra and sold us 2 black neon tetra because they were hardier fish. My husband and I went to the cashier and she didn't have receipt paper, so she scanned a flyer so the register could work but told us that our purchase would be on our PETCO perks card if we had any problems with our new fish. By the next morning, one fish was dead and the other one had white dots all over it and wasn't moving very much. About an hour later, it was dead. I will never buy fish from PETCO again.

Summer of 2011, I took my daughter to the pet company store in Newport Center Mall, Jersey City. We walk in and the lady worker comes up to us and said to my daughter, "Here, carry the dog. Maybe you can convince your mom in buying it." While she places the dog on my daughter's chest, the dog starts vomiting a whole lot on her jacket and OMG, on her five-day old new uggs! So the store manager Dan ** said, "No problem." Give me receipt and your uggs and we will refund your money back. Well, it's been seven months and I haven't received anything in the mail. I have his signature and writing stating he received receipt and uggs from me. Please I would like to resolve this matter as soon as possible. It's only fair to me. I've been patient but it came to a point that I'm upset that now the pet company is gone in JC Mall. Thanking you in advance!
It was fine with the first man but we got lost and I ended up with Charlene. My pal's account got changed and then had to be changed back. I felt her answers took a long time because she does not know and consulting others. Near the end, I asked a question and her reply was "Have I answered all your questions today?", that was it. What I want to know is how to get or see a copy of the chat line conversations as there were numbers and directions of which I'm not sure that I got them all or got them right, or if they were right. Can you email a copy of the chat? Thank you!

My friend's husband took our two beautiful goldendoodles to the PETCO groomer while we were at work and told them he wanted to cut their hair as a joke. The grooming salon went along with this cruel idea of a joke and butchered our precious dogs. They shaved them bald! They now have scabs and cuts all over their bodies because of this. They had never been to PETCO to be groomed and the groomer did not bother to contact us even though she knew he was not the owner and was asking them to drastically alter our dogs' appearance. I went to PETCO the next day to complain to the manager but he never said a word. They should have refused to do something like that to someone else's dogs! It will be many months before their hair is long and beautiful like it was.

On 1/19/12, I purchased a dog cage from the Easton, PA Petco. I paid $104.99. After it was set up and the box was out in the trash, I saw it was on Petco's web page. The price was $71.99 with free shipping. I called the store to see if they would give me a store credit for the difference. They refused and told me they are not allowed.
I then called their corporate number. The people I talked to were extremely hard to understand with their broken and poor English. They said the same thing as in the store. When I threatened to contact the local papers, they told me to box the item back up and return it for store credit and then make an online purchase.
I explained that the box was gone. They told me there was nothing they could do. Petco does not care about their customers or the pets they sell. All they care about is the almighty dollar. The people who work in their stores know nothing about the animals, and most of the pets are sick. The animals are abused and neglected. Spend your hard-earned money elsewhere. I would rather travel further and pay more than set foot in one of the dumps they call a store.

Alan, manager, has no customer skills. He is rude and nasty, even the employees hate him. He has no manners. Adoption center cages are filthy and on top of everything, they use Lysol and Clorox without rinsing with water. All cats are getting sick for the chemical fumes they are breathing. How can this be possible? Petco has nobody inspecting what these volunteers do. When I told the person cleaning to do a better job, the manager told me "one more word to the cleaning girl and you won't step in Petco again". She is not his employee, neither was I.

I ordered an oak pet gate on 10/12/2011 from Petco.com for my son in PA. Instead they shipped a 5ft. role of black netting. I contacted their customer service center and was told they would pick up the incorrect item and replace it with the correct item. I was told this twice over a two month period, but they never picked up the incorrect item or shipped the correct item. Instead they tell me their vendor requires photographic proof that they shipped black netting. I emailed the photographic proof twice and never got a response, so I spoke to their customer service representative today, 12/29/2011, and was told that their vendor does not have the item I ordered and they would issue a refund when they received the incorrect item. I told them I wanted the refund today, 12/29/2011. I was told they had processed the refund and I would receive email verification. I did not receive the refund verification. I've waited two months to be told they can't fulfill the order.

PETCO NYC keeps their birds and other exotic animals in abysmal conditions throughout their chains in NYC. It doesn't matter which store, uptown or downtown, Chelsea or on Madison avenue and 86th. The birds are unkempt, has dirty dishes, dirty water, not cared for, driven to an unhealthy state, with feathers tattered, food unkempt. Stop allowing this company to sell animals please! We are the only way that this will stop. Stop buying animals from PETCO. That's the only way this abuse of life will stop.

We recently confronted Petco about their overcharging tax. This is the response I got from them:
"Thank you for contacting Petco. Your email expressed your concern about being charged sales tax on the full purchase price of the sale item. With offers such as these, our suppliers reimburse Petco for the amount of discount applied before tax. Whatever promotions we have at our stores, we report our sales to the government at the full retail price of items. That is why our registers are configured to ring up your sale item before we can charge you with tax. It is not our intention to develop a practice that would be unfair to our patrons. Rest assured that your comments are sincerely appreciated so that we can continue to better our customer service. Thank you for your inquiry. Please contact us again if you need any further assistance."
Sincerely,Charina **
Customer Relations Coordinator
Now, I am really upset! We are paying a "point of sale" price and paying sales tax on the regular price. They are being reimbursed by manufacturers but not reimbursing us our tax. This does seem like an "intention to develop a practice that would be unfair to patrons." Why on earth would I go somewhere so I can pay extra tax and not know if Petco is lying and pocketing the money? I'm done with them.

In Salt Lake City, Petco consistently overcharges for sales tax. Are they actually paying the state what they charge, or are they keeping the profits? That's a lot of money when you consider how many sales they make daily. I intend to contact the sales tax commission and higher if necessary.

They are horrible! I received my dog from the pet company over two years ago. Don't get me wrong, I love my dog. She is the sweetest thing ever! I just hate the company I had to deal with. When I got my dog, they said she was of great health, and had been spayed. My husband got it as a gift for me. We didn't have the money at the time, so we put her on as a charge, to pay her off monthly (big mistake). When we brought her home, we noticed she was coughing a lot, and didn't seem well. We had to do a vet check up anyway, so we took her in. She had an ear infection, and sinus infection, and had no shots. We got all her shots, which cost a fortune, and then her antibiotics.
Later on, when she got old enough, she got her period. She had not been spayed, like they had told us. So we had to pay for that as well! All in all, we had to pay about $2,000 in vet bills, due to shots, and having to get her fixed. The billing in Pet Company is ridiculous as well. If you send in the bill as well, better send it in the day you get the bill in the mail (if you get it in the mail), and if you send it in a few days after, they claim it's late, and you have to pay double for it. If you call it in, they will sit on your payment, and make it late, so you have to pay extra anyway. Do not buy from them! It's a horrible company, with horrible costumer service. We've even been told we could get a refund for one late fee, then they didn't give it to us. It was lie. This is the worst company ever.

I needed a new litter box and wanted the Scoopfree Ultra Automatic Self-cleaning litter box. I found it on Petco.com for a good price. According to their website, it 'usually ships the next day.' There was no mention of it not being available. I placed my order and received my confirmation email. The next day, however, I received an email stating that it was backordered. I logged on to the website to see if I could find out how long the delay might be. There was nothing listed and the live chat was listed as unavailable. Using a different browser and without logging in, I went to the Petco website and searched for the litter box again. It was still listed as shipping the next day. This time a live chat box popped up inviting me to chat with a representative. I did and asked if this litter box were available. I was told it was.
To double check, I repeated my question, this time clarifying what I wanted to know by asking if it were available and ready to ship. Again, I was told it was. So, now I asked why I was told that my order was backordered? This time I was told that only after ordering do you find out if an item is backordered. Evidently, they do not update their website. The agent I spoke with blamed their vendors but obviously if they knew that my item was backordered, then Petco knew enough to adjust their website. I was told that ordered not filled within 10-20 days are automatically cancelled. This doesn't help when you want something right away. Had their website been honest about product availability, I would not have ordered from them. My advice to others, never trust Petco.com.

The Petco Store in Sterling VA keeps their conures in very small cages. One of the sun conures has been there for a very long time. Sun conures' feathers are greener when they are less then a year, and turns yellow as they get older. The sun conure at this store is very yellow, and at least a year old. I wish Petco would keep the conures in larger cages. Conures are intelligent creatures, and its so sad to see it kept in a tiny plastic cage, with only one perch, no chew toys, no access to a bath, and no fruit. I observed one conure trying to claw out of the cage, and slam in to the other side of the cage, which is so sad!
Petco is overcharging. $599.00 for a 1 year old sun conure, and you can buy baby sun conures at the American Bird Company in Falls Church, VA for $400.00. Why does Petco treat birds like merchandise, and not care if the birds are neurotic from being kept in a very tiny cage? I own two suns, and I've never trimmed their wings. They never had any injuries, and my birds love flying around my home. I've contacted Petco and expressed my concern, but the manager becomes combative.

The problems I have had with 1 order are ridiculous! I placed an order to get 1 particular item. I added a few other things. Next day I was emailed that the main item I wanted would not be able to be supplied, so I wanted to cancel the whole order. I was told I had to wait for a tracking number to be generated. It did not make sense to me. Then, I got an email saying the part of order has been shipped, the 3 dollar item I added to get free shipping. Next day I was informed that the 2 other items were on backorder. I called and asked how long would a backorder take. I was told 3 weeks or so. I said that was too long and asked if they could please cancel those items.
I waited on phone for 15 minutes and was told they had been cancelled. 12 hours later I got an email about the next shipment of the backordered items. I called back and was told nothing could be done. But they said I could return them to the local store. But since I used PayPal, I could only get a store credit. Needless to say, I am not in the mood to shop in your store right now. The whole experience with your store has been the worst I have ever had with an online store, four phones with an average hold time of 10-15 minutes. And I absolutely got no help at all. I will do my best to stop anyone I know from doing business with your store.

I purchased a dog on Aug.29. I brought the dog to the veterinarian. He needed several medications. The bill was $450. I submitted the bill and never heard back from them. If you will call them and they will refer you to the claims department which you can never speak to anyone. You can't even leave a message, mailbox full at this time. please try again' that's all you get. This is unacceptable. If the company will not stand behind their policies, they should not offer them to the public. But it will not end here, I will be taking them to small claims court. Do not buy from this company. You are better off going to a receiving shelter.

We bought a puppy. We were told that he had been sick, but had been treated and was now well. Shortly after coming home, he was coughing a lot. We took him to the vet, was still sick. He was treated and then contracted pneumonia. He was close to death. We were able to save him, and now is healthy. We filed the proper paper work with Pet Co. to get reimbursed.
After a couple of months I emailed the claims department, and was told I was told my claim was approved. I asked when I should expect the check. They gave me no response. I called, and goes to voice mail box that is full. I call often (Mays Landing) and talk with Alex. He tells me the office is reorganizing and he doesn't know what to tell me. I told him I am going to take Pet Co. to court, and he said that is probably a good idea! So I am going to give it a few more weeks. If I don't get my check, I am going to file at small claims court.
Pet Co., if you're reading this, I did the right thing per your protocol. Now it's your turn to do the right thing. Give me my reimbursement!

I am a regular customer at store 1110 in La Mesa, CA. It's the closest Petco to my house. Every time I go in, the store manager, I believe her name is ''Debby'', is always more than rude, not just to me. On Tuesday when I was in the grooming salon, she was being completely mean and inappropriate to one of the workers there. She was screaming at him in front of customers. It was so unprofessional, and I felt so bad for this young man. When she noticed I was standing there, she said, ''Mind your own business. I'm having a bad day.'' She then walked away. I asked the groomer what the big deal was. He replied, ''She's always like that. It's like prison here.''
I don't think this behavior should be tolerated as representatives of your company. If she's like that to people, what would she do to my animals? I won't bring them in if I know she's working. I would feel so uncomfortable leaving them near her. In fact, if I am to entertain the idea of going back to this particular store, I would need to know first if she had been transferred or even better, terminated. How are those workers supposed to function properly in such a hostile work environment? It doesn't seem fair to subject them to such torture. I am not impressed, and I will not be silent about the things I witnessed. I will warn every one of my friends that shop there about this woman. The only reason I will go back until she's gone is to bring those nice, pleasant groomers some cookies or something nice for the upcoming holidays. This is completely unacceptable from a customer standpoint.

I purchased a pet at the Pet Company at the Freehold Raceway Mall in Freehold NJ. After only seven months, the dog was diagnosed with encephalitis and almost died; $2400 in vet bills later. I filed a claim with the store in accordance with their state mandated warranty policy. I got the runaround for a month and a half and then the store went out of business. I was given the customer support number, only to discover that the mailbox is full and taking no more messages; more smoke and mirrors.
The Staten Island store which is still open, keeps referring people to that number which is no help. I'm ready to call the police and the state bureaus.

Bought a mini schnauser and after we brought the dog home, took it to the vet. She kept on coughing. Found out that the dog had pneumonia. The vet treated her and now she is better. So I brought the bills to the pet company store and filled a reimbursement. So far, I haven't received anything. Called the home office, keep getting voicemail box is full and not accepting any new messages.

My daughter bought me the Waterfall globe tank for my birthday. I went to decorate the bowl, and I noticed a chip in the glass. I called the manager of the store (Frank in Lutherville) who stated that I bring the bowl back and they would replace it. I did just that and was given another bowl. However, the bowl was dirty and I figured it would be ok once it was cleaned. It was not; it had been used--it had scratches and spots that just would not come out.
I took it back to the same store that night and the manager Frank told me he would not exchange it again. He claimed it was taken from a box on the shelf. It could not have been taken from a box on the shelf, because the first one was not dirty like that. He then said, "Well if you have your receipt, you can return it." Little did he know that I have the receipt for the tank as well as the receipt for the decorations I had bought for the tank. I plan on returning everything today. And I will not be shopping at the PETCO in Lutherville, MD again.

They are closing all their offices and have not answered me. I purchased an AKC French Bulldog and it has been sick since day one. I purchased the peace of mind pet policy and no one answered any of my calls. Please help!

I have a lot of background in animal care, having a pre-veterinary bachelors degree and having a job as an animal care provider at an animal hospital for 4 years now. I just started working at The Pet Company in Milford, CT as an animal care tech about a month ago as a second job, and what I've seen there has been atrocious.
Here is my laundry list: the whole place smells of feces and the cages have a distinct smell of ammonia. Many of the dogs have worms and kennel cough. I have a strong suspicion that they come from puppy mills. The back room looks like it have never been cleaned. I cleaned out one corner of it and found months- to years-old dog and rabbit feces. (I have no idea how rabbit feces got back there, since the rabbits never see the back room). Many techs don't wash out food bowls but simply spray them down with water. Proper disinfectant is rarely used, if at all.
I've been working there for a month and still haven't seen a paycheck. Ive heard from many other store associates that they have gone months without being paid. The manager, Jaime, is very weird and disappears into the bathroom for hours at a time or falls asleep at the food court or at his desk in the back room. He's also been hours late to work.
Overall, this business is shady in how it treats both its animals and employees. Please do not buy animals from this store. Let it go out of business.

Since PETCO was out of FRONTLINE, I decided to buy the SENTRY Flea and Tick Drops for my Great Pyrenees. Within one day of applying it, my dog became extremely itchy around the areas I had applied it. A huge, festered sore appeared. I took him to the vet and needed a Vetalog injection, antibiotics, and Neo-Predef powder. Despite spending $150 later, I can say I am glad I got him in before it got any worse. I will never use this product again.

I used to work at the pet company in the Danbury mall. Overall, the place was not kept up with and no matter what they tell you, the dogs are indeed from puppy mills. I had finally had enough after a year and gave my two weeks notice. Then the following day while I was working, people from home office came in and shut the store down. A month prior to that, we started not getting paid on time. Since then, I had not gotten my last paycheck. I called and called the home office in New Windsor and would always get a voicemail.
After a week of not getting a callback, I and my former co-workers decided to write a complaint to the Department of Labor. I just got my check Saturday, but it isn't even the correct amount. They basically did not pay me for my last day there. I know it's not much, but at this point, it's the principle. My co-workers still have not gotten their checks as well as those who worked at the store in Milford. I urge everyone reading this who works there to quit because this company lies, cheats and they will not pay you. I also urge those thinking of buying a puppy there to please go elsewhere. I know the puppies are cute and also deserve good homes, but you are just giving this company more money than they deserve and are helping keep puppy mills in business. This company needs to be shut down.

I and my three-year old went in there to look at some stuff for our cats in August 2011. We went over to the bird cage to look and one of the birds was at the bottom of the cage. I told a girl that there was a bird at the bottom of the cage, and she said she'll take care of it. Then we went over to look at the Ferrets and there were flies in their cage, more than five. I have applied for a job at this place and they never call even for a interview. Then, they don't take care of their business and have bad workers. I don't know who I can complain to.

Alan, the manager, has no customer skills. He is rude and nasty; even the employees hate him. He has no manners. The adoption center cages are filthy, and on top of everything, they use Lysol and Clorox without rinsing with water. All cats are getting sick for the chemical fumes they are breathing. How can this be possible? PETCO has nobody inspecting what these volunteers do. When I told the person cleaning to do a better job, the manager told me, "One more word to the cleaning girl, and you won't step in PETCO again." She is not his employee; neither was I.

I went to Petco looking for a companion for my little ferret. So, I asked a salesperson for help. From the moment, he came to help me. He pointed out on an old ferret they had for adoption. When I saw it, I felt sorry for that ferret. I asked him if it would be a good companion for my ferret. He said yes (but he doesn't play with my ferret at all). Well, the fact is, they said the ferret was healthy. After a month, I noticed it had something on his neck. I didn't know what was it, but that thing started growing up very fast. I took it to the vet. They told me my poor ferret has a tumor and he needs a surgery. Unfortunately, that surgery is too expensive. I couldn't get it done yet. I had never imagined this would happen.

I bought a 40 lb. bag of Iams Blue Bag Weight Control ($40+) about 1-1/2 months ago from Petco. Put the purchase on my Petco Pals Card. I keep the food in an air tight tupperware container in my kitchen. After about my dog consumed about half the bag it started to smell funny, I gave the food to my 80 lb. labradore, and as he is a pig, he turned up nose at first but ate the food anyway. After about five minutes or so eating the food, he started acting funny, I took him outside and he threw up all over the front yard. I looked inside the container and saw a dead mouse in the middle of the food container. I called Petco right away and the manager, Booker told me there was nothing I could do without a receipt.
He said he would contact his boss, but after four days I have not heard one word. I can't even get credit for what I had left at this point. I put the bag with the mouse in my trash can and it was smelling really rank. i don't want to even put the bag in my car. I will never go back to Petco and recommend that no one else goes there either. I have been going there for the past 15 years (with my previous dog), but no more. I guess that's how customers are treated there. NO RESPECT. Feel like Rodney Dangerfield. Who keeps a receipt after 1-1/2 months? I can't give a rating to a store that rips you off! A 0 rating is too high!

Last month, I brought my Australian Shepherd in to the grooming salon at our local Petco store. I have never brought any of my animals to the Petco grooming salon, but my regular groomer has been very difficult to book with, as they are extremely busy. When I came to pick my dog up, I wasn't entirely surprised that the grooming job was sub-par or that it was more expensive. I paid and left.
The next day, my dog began to favor her left ear. Two days later, she had a full-blown ear infection. Despite my attempts to clean and care for the infection, by the time I got her to the vet the next week, the inside of her ear was basically a giant open sore. My veterinarian confirmed my suspicions by saying it was most likely caused by soapy or unclean water getting into the ear.

First of all, the puppies at The Pet Company are from puppy mills. So you will be paying top dollar for badly bred animals. However, I love my little Chihuahua I bought just a few days ago even though he is sick and I have had to already start him on medicine. My complaint is more about the way I was tricked into purchasing their "Lifetime Guarantee" for $200.00. When I first showed interest in the pup, the store clerk, Connie, told me the price was $1300.00.
I said no way and somehow they magically dropped the price to $1099.00 I still said I wanted to think about it over night and left the store. She called my cell phone and offered me $800.00 if I bought the puppy that night. So I gave in and went back to the store with my kids in tow. Once there, after my kids are already excited about bringing a puppy home, Connie tells me the final price is $1049. She told me that included the Lifetime Guarantee that I had to purchase and it was not an option to decline it.
I told her I didn't want it and felt like I was being forced into purchasing it. In a very snotty tone she told me she would gladly void the whole contract out. At this point my kids were getting upset about me changing my mind. I went ahead and went with the purchase thinking it wouldn't hurt to have the guarantee. I got home and read over the guarantee and realized it is a total rip off. You have to go through major hoops, including an autopsy, if anything ever happens to your pet to even have the store honor the guarantee. I have tried and tried to no avail to have this warranty refunded.
The store clerks have been so ugly and unprofessional when speaking with me. I will never deal with this company and wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy. I basically was lied to about it being required to purchase the warranty to take the dog home and now because I signed for it I am "bound by contract." It's all a bunch of bull. Its $200.00 wasted. Nowhere does the paperwork state that is a contract I signed. I just acknowledged receipt of the warranty, not a binding contract.

I purchased a puppy from this company and the sales were all deceitful. They claimed that the first puppy visit comes with a shot and check up. My puppy was sick and had the Kennel Cough. The puppy costs $1600 but the check up and medication was not expensive around $100. This amount was supposed to be covered under their policy. I never received my reimbursement and the office number they gave me to call was a cell phone number.
The company also states that they will reimburse me 100% if the puppy dies in 5 years due to any health conditions. I don't trust this company since they can't even reimburse me $100 for the check up and medication. I paid for the puppy at a higher price than market value because I thought that it comes with a great deal of benefits. However I didn't get the benefit that I was supposed to get. The market price for my puppy is $800; however, I paid $1600 for the additional benefits that were supposed to be but are not.

I purchased a puppy (and two additional "piece of mind" warranties) who turned out to have bilateral cherry eye which my vet described as "genetic defect" and told me to contact the pet store and question my warranty as this would be "expensive" to treat. I filed a claim with The Pet Company, sent in all the documentation they requested as well as an itemized estimate of the surgery bill (not done yet). A few weeks later, I received a denial in the mail from The Pet Company simply stating "items submitted for reimbursement not covered under the warranty". There was no explanation given and I am still not sure what is even covered under the two extra warranties I purchased. This company is a disgrace.
I in turn will be responsible for all of the charges, which are approximately $1000 when my puppy undergoes cherry eye repair tomorrow. This is not to mention the emotional toll this is taking on me. I now have to go through the process of pre-op care, putting my dog under anesthesia and post-op care.

My chocolate lab had dry skin from winter heating. Petco agreed to only give him a skin softening bath. They knew he was at the vet a week prior. I made it clear...only a bath. I picked my dog up. I was charged an expensive deluxe grooming package--ears, nails, blow dry, etc. The manager said, ''We don't have anything to do with that". Grooming department said ''this is how we do it''. I could not get anyone to listen or believe me. Where is customer service? I had to pay more than the agreed upon amount. My dog's skin was really dry after the blow dryer.

I purchased a puppy from The Pet Company on 1/1/10. They claimed he came from a breeder and that he was "fit for sale". I came to find that he had a very severe case of Giardia, the parasite that is highly contagious to both other dogs and humans. They refuse to refund me the cost I incurred at the Veterinarian's office because I did not submit the receipts "on time".
When I first saw Rocky, he was in the crate with another dog, which obviously leads me to believe that the Giardia was spread to this animal, as well. What also concerns me is the fact that people come into this store with their children and pet these puppies, not realizing that it is a health hazard. This store should be shut down, along with the puppy mills they ship from. I incurred several hundred dollars of Veterinary bills, not to mention that this puppy has severe emotional issues.

We purchased a 12-week-old Yorkie puppy from the Towne Center Mall Pet Company store last week. I was adamant about questioning the health of the puppy because I have another dog at home that I did not want subjected to any form of illness. They assured us that this puppy was 100% healthy which was far from the truth! Within 3 days of having this puppy home, my 5-year-old Schnoodle, which has always been in perfect health, was hospitalized with a severe bacterial infection that nearly claimed his life. We took the new Yorkie puppy to the vet that the Pet Company deals with on the same day that my dog got sick and the puppy presented with bloody stools and was found to have a bacterial infection, severe skin irritation and scabbing from flea infestation (which we were told was scabbing from the identity chip), ear mites and a severe infection in both ears.
We brought the letter from the vet as well as the paperwork listing the expense and lab findings to the Pet Company and we were told they are not responsible for the illness of my dogs. This event has cost us $1183.06 in vet bills on top of the $1500.00 purchase price of what we were told was a healthy puppy. Not to mention the emotional distress to our family worrying about the welfare of our beloved 5-year-old dog that was hospitalized for 3 days. Bringing home a new puppy is supposed to be a positive experience for my children and this was nothing short of a nightmare!

I bought my English bulldog from The Pet Store in Sept. 2007. It is very expensive ($4,848.85). It included POM Warranty and Peace of Mind Warranty. I know it is expensive but as soon as I saw him, I fell in love with Fats Domino. The kicker is the insurance. They have no address or telephone number. The shop here closed down, with no forwarding address or telephone number. Fats needs surgery. Of course, it is very expensive. The policy is not worth the paper printed on. Can anyone help find the company? And of course, The Pet Company cannot be located.

I recently just brought a dog from the Milford, pet company store. She is the cutest thing, be warned that I took her home with kennel cough and it cost me 100.00 just to get meds and get her checked out. She cost a pretty penny too and I read her paperwork to find out that she was transported more than five times over and over again. I feel bad for these animals and only complain because I believe their prices are ridiculous. Although, the associates where very helpful and did provide with all her updated shot and where I can call if I had any questions for the doctor. I wouldn't recommend buying a dog from here, but if you ask them about the information they will fill you in. I read all the other stories on here and they should of been more upfront. To make this story end, she is healthy and my new best friend.
She ended up having kennel cough which cost 100.00 bucks meds and visit, I don't care about money, nor am I rich, it's just the case that these dogs should be more looked at from the vet that comes in to check them, or think about changing the vet to someone who cares. Thanks.

I applied for a Christmas job in 2006 at the Pet Company. I worked there for three weeks and to this day, 2010, I have not been paid a cent. I called and called and there is no reply.

I purchased an American Bulldog puppy at the Menlo Park Mall store #6. Bringing the dog home, I noticed that Mack was drinking a lot of water. I took him to the vet for a check up. The vet ran some tests and concluded that the puppy had Juvenile Renal disease. He had the kidneys of a 10 year old dog. The dog was purchased in late September. Numerous trips to the vet through the next months. The vet gave Mack until New Years Day of 2010. Mack, through the efforts of the vet, had lived past New Year's only to pass just recently, 3-26-10. The Pet Company has not been too responsive to the claims I have submitted. I have paid the vet through my Visa card but the Pet Company credits their store card. Meaning, I have credit to purchase items or a new pet.

I was in this store today when I saw a small puppy with an infected paw. His paw was raw and pink colored and looked very painful. The puppy was chewing at his paw and it was very obvious that these puppies are not taken care of at all. This poor puppy is in a lot of pain and I am honestly concerned for its well being. I am very upset and disturbed by this.

The policy of the store where I purchased the dog was that if a letter of "unfit" was provided, they would incur all expenses of making dog well. Dog's tail improperly "docked"; it fell off in my hand and the dog had worms. They refused to pay for office visits and medications. Janet is rude, inconsiderate, nasty and unprofessional. Now I realize they have many complaints filed against them.

On Sunday, January 17 2010, we purchased a German Shepherd/Lab mix at Petco on Morena Blvd. in San Diego. Noah's Ark Dog Rescue and Adoption brings their dogs there on the weekends to have them adopted. We purchased a 3 month old puppy for $250. She had what we were told was a small infection, and was on amoxicillin. We were told to keep her on the medicine for 5 days, and then she would be fine. Over the next few days, she developed a terrible cough, which we assumed to be kennel cough.
On Thursday, January 21 we took our new puppy for her second round of DHLLP shot. When we took her to the Banfield hospital at the Petsmart on Rosecrans in San Diego, they told us her temperature was 104.9, and that she needed immediate attention. We were told we could either take her to the emergency room, or they could give her fluids to help the temperature decrease, and bring her back later if she still had the temperature. We decided to take her to the emergency room, since her temperature was so high. When we took her into the emergency room, her temperature had risen to 106 degrees. At the VCA Emergency Animal Hospital located near Hotel Circle in San Diego, we were faced with $1,000 in overnight, medicine and laboratory fees. We agreed to paying for these items, since we were told she needed the fluids and medicine to control her fever.
We called on Friday January 22 at 6 AM, to find out that her temperature had not decreased, and that she wasn't responding to the medicine. In addition, she had fluid in her right lung, and was now battling pneumonia. We were then told that she would need to stay at least 3-4 additional nights at $1,000 a night. In addition, our concern was if she had distemper, because her blood work came back with an extremely low white blood cell count. They told us to do the distemper test. She would definitely have to pay extra for that, and that she would have to stay the night again. They told us the medication they had given her would cause cartilage damage to her when she was older.
We had to make a decision by 10 AM as to bring her home as sick as she was, or to leave her there and accrue more charges. Under the impression that she needed more treatment (that we could not afford on such a low percentage of her surviving), we chose to put her to sleep (another fee). When I contacted the shelter, she informed us that we would receive a refund for her adoption fee of $250, and she would do everything to speak with the committee at the shelter to try and pay for half of her vet bill. We received $250 for her adoption fee on Sunday, January 24th. I was told today, February 9, that we would not receive anything back from them for her vet bill. We had our puppy for 4 days, and tried to do what was reasonable to keep her alive, and it didn't work. We were sold a very sick puppy that should not have been sold in the first place. We now have a $1,045 vet bill and no puppy.

On January 12th, 2010 I purchased a puppy from The Pet Company. On January 16th, she was diagnosed by a vet to have the parvo virus, which is a very serious and very contagious intestine virus. My puppy was in the hospital until January 19th, when she was released with antibiotics and other medications. On January 18th I brought to the store a certificate from the vet that had treated my puppy that stated she was unfit for sale. I also gave the store employees the vet bill and the diagnosis. The store employees had me fill out a form of election and told me they would give everything to the corporate office and that corporate would contact me. I have yet to hear anything from them and I have already sent two e-mails with no response. Because my puppy was so sick, I lost one day of work to take her to the vet. Also, because my puppy was in the hospital for four days, the bill now exceeds $1500.00. I would like The Pet Company to at least pay my vet bills because the puppy was sick when sold to me.

I purchased a Yorkshire terrier from this company on 12/19/09. This puppy was sold to me in a horrible condition as far a appearance. I paid $1669 for the dog and got it home and kept smelling this offensive smell. I took the pup to the vet and was told that he had a really bad ear infection for which he had for weeks if not months. The vet prescribed ear cleaner and antibiotic drops for which cost me $42. I went back to the store and explained to them that I felt like they completely ripped me off. After explaining my situation, I was told to make a claim for which I did to not receive any correspondence or feedback a month later. I never received the pups Pedigree for which I should have received the day of purchase but the manager didn't have it in the store because she said she may have misplaced it or she may have it home.
When I returned on 1-1-10 to complete the claim, I again asked about the Pedigree paper and was told that she mailed it out which was a lie because up until today I don't have the Pedigree paper and the person for which put through all of this headache name is Alex who is supposedly a manager but has no managerial skills.
So today 1-22-10, I called the pet company again and spoke to another one of their "managers" Amanda because I wanted to inquire about the claim and was told to e-mail the company that she knows nothing. I then asked about the Pedigree and was told she doesn't know anything about that either. She just got into the company a couple of days ago! This is an outrage! I want the $42 refunded back to me along with a refund of $1669.15 for the puppy.
When he was sold to me, he was out of date on all the shots they were supposed to give him. Why should I have to dish out so much money to do something that was their responsibility while in their care? They have already ripped me off. I want my money back I want someone to speak to me and resolve this ASAP! I am prepared to take this to court if need be, if it can not be settled! The price for him was absurd and to think I would have to spend a lot more money for shots they should have given him. I was told by the salesman Jon and the manager that he was so expensive because he would not need any shots or anything for at least another 2 if not 3 months! My son is clearly depressed because this has been such a nightmare! What should be making him happy is making him sad!

For at least the past two years, Petco has been over charging sales tax on items purchased from their stores. When an item is on sale, Petco charges sales tax on the full retail price instead of the sales price. This is illegal in Georgia and probably throughout the US. For example, if you purchase an item which is normally priced at $20 but is advertised in their sales flyer for $15, you will be charged sales tax on the $20. So in the above example, my sales tax (at 6%) should be 90 cents, but Petco is charging $1.20 or an additional 30 cents for this item.
Now on each transaction, it may be a small amount but over a year this can be quite a large amount of money per customer. And imagine the thousands of consumers that they have and you can imagine the ripple effect (and additional profit) this illegal transaction is having on their customers. I contacted the office of the CFO (Michael ***) and spoke with his assistant, who assured me someone from the Corporate Executive Offices would contact me, which they have not! Also to verify the information, I contacted the GA Dept of Revenue and they also concurred that Petco is illegally charging excessive sales tax.

During the afternoon on 1/10/2010, I visited The Pet Company at Colonie Center in Albany, NY and was looking at their puppies. They have a two month old female puggle. I noticed that the puppy had a runny nose. When a family was visiting with the puppy in the play area, I was watching and they commented that the puppy's nose was congested. I spoke to a male employee and explained that if the family does not purchase the puppy that she needs to see a vet because she is sick. I was told that all of their pets have been checked by a vet. I explained the situation again, and also mentioned that she had thrown up, while visiting with the family.
While discussing the situation with him, a female employee came up to us and stated that the breed is like that, and that the puppy just needed to get her immunity up, because she had been out of her cage a lot that day. Just for the record, I have a two year old puggle. The breed does not have a constant runny nose and congestion. No puppy should be that way. I held the puppy for a couple of minutes, and she snorted and sounded congested when I was holding her. This puppy is sick and the staff just blew off my concerns. Given that this puppy is only two months old, I am extremely concerned about her health. I have looked for a website for this company so that I can voice my concerns, but I cannot locate one. I am hoping that this complaint will forwarded to someone, who can do something about the situation. I am not stupid. I know a sick puppy when I see and hear one. If this puppy is not treated soon, her health could be seriously compromised.

I purchased the most adorable little puppy from The Pet Company for over $1,000. Upon purchase, I was shown papers that said all vaccines were up to date and effective until March of 2010 (5 months from now). They even let me have the first vet visit free. Sounds great, right? WRONG. When I went to see the vet, she informed me that not only did the dog need more shots ($100 worth) THAT DAY but he would also need at least $500 more of shots over the next 4 months. When I approached the store about it, the girl that sold him to me suddnely became extremely rude (total 180 from her original demeaner) and wouldn't even give me the regional managers name or phone number. I filled out some form that no one will probably ever see for reimbursement which was said to take 2-6 weeks to get paid back...and it may be denied! Total Rip OFf! They should have just said he was $1500. NOT $1000 and totally up to date.

About 18 years ago I discovered Petco in southern California. It was a great place to shop because of the knowledgeable and friendly staff, great products and a place where I could get all of my pet supplies. About 2 years into my loyalty to Petco, all of the great reason I shopped there were on the decline. The knowledgeable and friendly staff that knew me all by name were slowly being replaced with very young inexperienced unfriendly staff. If I need help you had to hunt someone down that never had any answers. The impeccably clean store I shopped in now was very dusty, dirty and not well kept. I brought my concerns to the manager/friend several times and she would either help me with my needs or take care of the problem.
It didn't take much longer and with there decrease in quality and increase in prices I have had enough. My last visit I went to the manager (who had been replaced with a younger inexperienced one) and voiced my concerns. I said Ive been a customer for almost 3 years and the steady decline of the quality of service you provide and the unsanitary conditions you keep the store, fish tanks etc... I'm taking my $150.00 - $200.00 I spend a week on my animals somewhere else. His response was " Sorry to see you go" and walked away. Over the years I've used a handful of different Petco's when I was in a pinch and things have not changed. Fish tanks are dirty with dead fish floating, store is dirty and staff rather carry on conversations about parting and whos screwing who then help with bloat, mites or testing for PH.
Now here is what leads me to writing this complaint. Due to the huge pet food recall of 2007 I've been watching all of the premium brands of pet foods for additional recalls and class action suits. I was using Nutro and EVO pet food but because of additional recalls for different toxic chemicals other then Melamine and because of the numerous class action suits for not disclosing whats really in the food, I came to the conclusion that Natural Balance Ultra Premium formula was the best for my cats. They use all human grade food (not rotten, decaying, diseased ridden animals) and the most important first 5 ingredients are Chicken Meal, Chicken, Brown Rice, Salmon Meal, Barley, Oatmeal. So I used Natural Balances locate a store on there website and the closest retailer to me is......up...PETCO.... so I thought it's been years since I've stepped in any of there stores and now living in northern California why not.
So I went to Petco's website and it states they sell it for $28.99 for the 15 lb bag. I arrive at Petco 10/19/09 at 7:30 pm and upon walking in the door and looking for the cat food section I find my NB food and it says $33.99???? So I pick it up and travel over to the fish department, the fish tanks were nasty with algae and dead fish floating. When I found 2 associates laughing and giggling I told them about it and they said "we know". I went to the register to check out, I told the cashier on there website it says $28.99? She said " Petco on line is a different Petco and there not related"! (The cashier then handed my wife a instant $1.00 off coupon to fill out) and I said if your not the same Petco why on there site does it locate this store? "I don't know" she said.
So I asked her for her corporate number, she said it would be on the receipt. I said that's your customer service number, I want corporates! she made a call and then wrote down a number and gave it to me. I then stormed out and left my wife to finish the transaction. When I arrived home I asked for the receipt it was the SAME NUMBER..and to top it off, the $1.00 instant coupon my wife filled out WASN'T EVEN REFLECTED ON THE RECEIPT!!!!!!!! Not only was I charged $5.00 more then what the price on the Internet said but they also didn't comp me my $1.00 coupon. So I came home and googled Petco+complaints...OMG..I'm not even going to start. Then I googled Petco+recalls and found out not only have there stores been dirty and unsanitary for over 18 years that I know of but so is there main distribution center, in fact the FDA seized a bunch of there food..here it is.At the request of the US Food and Drug Administration US Marshals today seized pet food products from the Petco Animals Supplies Distribution Center in Joliet, IL. This comes after a warrant was issued by the US District Court in Chicago. The pet food storage facility violated the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act because it allegedly had been storing pet food under unsanitary conditions during an FDA inspection of the Petco distribution center in April of this year.
During the April inspection FDA inspectors reported widespread and active rodent and bird infestations. After a follow-up visit last month FDA officials found continuing active and widespread infestation.
Margaret G, Associate Commissioner for Regulatory Affairs had this to say about the pet food seizure at the Petco distribution center:
Consumers expect that such safeguards will be in place not only for human food, but for pet food as well.
And this is what PETCO's site says.
Were committed to providing a safe, healthy and humane environment for companion animals in our stores and to setting a standard for pet parents to follow.
At PETCO, animals always come first, and our people make it happen.
We hire passionate, dedicated animal-lovers to work at PETCO. Our associates are in our stores every day, interacting with customers and helping them make the right choices to care for their pets. To ensure theyre experts in animal care, we invest in ongoing, advanced training and education for all store associates and managers. What a FRIGGIN JOKE!!!!!

I purchased an Italian Greyhound from Pet Company in Menlo Mall on August 28, 2009. Since I got the dog I have taken it to the vet numerous times and had to pay for my bills which is ridiculous considering the dog got sick from the inhumane ways they keep the dogs in their filthy disgusting attempt for a pet store. The employee Sara lied when we purchased our pet saying that we were getting into a 2 year plan in which the dog would be completely payed off and the interest rate was 1.22%. I found this to be the best deal and asked her to confirm on this plan. She did and both her and the ridiculously empty minded manager, Linda, confirmed it. I just recieved my bill, late by the way, and my interest rate is 22.99% and it is not in a 2 year plan but revolving. I just want everyone out there to know that Pet Company is a disgusting rechid company that doesn't give two ***** about the dogs they keep there. Each one of there employees have as much common sense and intelligence as the **** my dogs crap out every day and I hope they all rot in hell. As for those that got fooled as I did good luck and may you hate those people and their company as much as I do.

We purchased a black labador on 9/04,On the evening of 9/05 we were forced to make a trip to the animal emergency room due to a severe kennel cough that the Vet advised could be fatal according to the description of symptons. The dog was returned on 9/06 and we received a full refund as they immediately placed the dog on a nebulizer due to the obvious condition of the dog. We were told to fax the Vet bill which their corporate would have to approve. After following up for three weeks I was told that out of the $216.83, I would only be reimbursed $98.83. The reason they gave me was that the first Vet bill is at the customers expense. This was obviously not a routine Vet visit as it was a life threatening emergency visit. The bill is exclusive to the dog's condition. My children were crying in fear from the disturbing sounds the dog was making. I can understand the fact that I lost money on the food, toys, leashes etc, but to not receive a full refund of an emergency visit must be in violation of law. I have sent two e-mails to their corporte e-mail account, customerservice@thepetcompany.com over one week ago and I have not received any acknowledgment or response.

I bought a dog mon 9/7/09, he is 5 months old. I noticed he was not eating from the time I took Him home. I thought it was just the change in environment. I then noticed he was breathoing rapidly on 9/8/09. On 9/10/09 I took the dog to the vet, when I was told the dog was sick with an upper respritory infection and an intestinal infection and possible parisite. The vet said I bought a sick dog and it was unfit for sale. I have incraesing vet costs which I am told I will be refunded, but the heartach time and incovinience has made me write to you. I don't knoe how offten this company gets complaints but I did want to bring it to your attention that they are selling sick animals in this Staten Island store.

I purchased a yorkie from the Pet Company at Hamilton Place Mall in Chattanooga, TN. The dog seemed fine from what I saw when I first got it. When we purchased the dog, which was a $1400 dog, we were told to take the dog to the vet within 2 weeks and anything that was wrong with the dog's health we would be reimbursed for. When we came home i noticed the dog had a patch of bald hair on his leg. We took him to the vet and he ended up having ringworm. We told the people at the mall that the dog had ringworm and they said ok we will send in the paperwork and you will get your money in the mail. It has been 3 months. We have been battling with the workers of this store as well as the owner. Mary who is the owner has promised to call us back several times, we can never get a hold of her. When we do she just ignores us and says she will call the corporate office and call us back. When we call the workers at the mall they say it is over their head. All in all, I would strongly recommend NOT buying a dog from this Pet store. The animals there are sick and these people don't even care. Not only do they not care about their animals, they don't care about their customers either. If you purchase a dog from here, you will only end up with trouble. The workers there have horrible customer service and treat their animals bad.

I went with my fiancee on Monday, 8/7/09 to look at puppies at The Pet Company in Colonie Center Mall - and what I saw was awful. There was a 2 month old black & grey male Italian Greyhound in one of the top cages. The air conditioner was blasting and the poor puppy was shivering like crazy while it was trying to sleep. (Mind that Italian Greyhounds don't have the fur to keep them warm like the other dogs in the facility do.)
As it was breathing its chest heaved as if it were trying to cough with every breath. It was very clearly sick, miserable, and neglected. No customer in their right mind is going to buy that puppy for thousands of dollars in that condition, and if that is the case, it's going to die a sad and lonely death in its cage for all to see.
Terrible, just awful.

I went into the store and asked an employee where they get there puppies from. He told me a farm. I asked him if it was a puppy mill and he answered yes. I told him that was awful and he asked why. I proceeded to tell him why. Something needs to be done. This should be against the law and all puppy mills need to be shut down. And the Pet Company needs to be shut down or get their puppies from humane sources.

On 5/31/08, I purchased a Boxer puppy for my daughters from The Pet Company store # 28 in Danbury Mall. The poor dog has since been suffering from a skin condition in which he develops bloody, pus-filled blisters that cause him a lot of itching and discomfort. I have filed a claims through the store insurance that was included in the price of the purchase of the dog but to this date, I have not received any reimbursement payment for the $1,800 vet bills acquired to treat the dog. I have contacted the store & district office on many occasions, who in return tell me that the claim has been approved and that a check would be sent to me via mail. As of 7/8/09, I made several calls to the store to get answers, but all I get in response is that they will get back to me.

My husband and I purchased an 11-week-old female miniature pinscher from The Pet Company in the Menlo Park Mall in Edison, NJ for the outrageous price of $1800. We were told that the price was so high because of genetic testing and health screening that their "reputable breeders" guaranteed. We figured that this price was more than a little steep, but that it would be worth it to ensure the health of the animal (We have a 2-year-old son who had a strong affinity for animals, and we knew that the experience could be potentially damaging).
Well, after bringing her home and doing some research on her "reputable breeder," it didn't take long to see that not only was she inbred but that this particular breeder is what many would consider a puppy mill. She has over 100 dogs at any time and was written up multiple times by the US Department of Agriculture (which, by the way, is the only qualification that Pet Company needs in order to deem them "reputable"). The most recent (the month this dog was born) was for having over 50 animals a year or more overdue for veterinary treatment. The same citation occurred less than six months before. Other complaints were registered, including inadequate housing.
When presented with this information, the Pet Company answers with "Oh, that could be anything that anyone told you." When again stating that it is an official government website, Patti shrugged it off and said that it's all hearsay and that the only way to know for sure would be talking to the breeder. I tried this after having to hunt all over for her phone number. Yeah, it's been disconnected for quite some time. No surprise there.
Now, this dog was also showing early signs of aggression--snarling, snapping, and biting when seemingly unprovoked. She bit all three of us within a 4-day time period, all more than once. We called out of concern, and Patti insisted that the dog was just playing, or better yet "using our son as a chew toy since they don't know any better." Her advice was to leave the dog in her crate for weeks, only taking her out to eat and eliminate. This was supposed to make her a "whole new dog."
Yeah, we ignored that "advice." This poor dog spent all of her life in a cage and changed hands 5 times by the time we got her (as have all dogs sold at the Pet Company. The cycle goes: Puppy Mill - Truck - Lambriar facility - Pet Store - Home.). So we took her to the vet, and it turned out she had a bad case of kennel cough and that they had been overfeeding our little girl three times the amount she should be eating in a day! So not only was she extremely sick, but she was also bloated and constipated. The combination of the pain and lack of socialization was causing her to snarl and snap. We haven't had a problem since putting her on a proper diet.
All in all, she is a very sweet dog. However, it's obvious that she comes from poor lines (inbred) and that there is no health testing or any form of vet care done by her breeder. So the chances are good that she won't be a healthy dog. The vet thought it was possible that she has a thyroid problem which she'll be tested for next week after her recovery.
We were originally going to try to return her, feeling that it would be the responsible thing, seeing as how we would not be able to afford such a special needs dog, especially not after spending $1800 on her. But it was obvious after bringing her into the store that they don't care anything about the animals they "stock."
When presented with what the veterinarian wrote about her thyroid, kennel cough, and that keeping her locked up in a cage would only make things worse, Patti responded with "And is this vet a behavioral trainer?" She completely dismissed everything that his professional opinion offered. She also claimed that we gave the dog her kennel cough, because we reported her as being aggressive and that it hurt her feelings, being unwanted.

I purchased my Yorkie from this place and was told that TD Bank was the loan company for the purchase. I did not get a bill. I received a late fee, when I called them to see if payment was due. Then I paid two payments and requested by mail the return of the fee charged. Next no bill comes again and the date goes to the 13th, not 18th. I was told that another fee was issued. This time, I explained it's a shame because I own 6 businesses in NJ and sadly they are through TD Bank. At the moment, I said I want to pay this credit off. I charged it to just use credit and had planned to keep months if I had, it would have ruined my credit.
I am now considering taking my business with TD elsewhere to a bank who does not allow people to be ripped off. I am very upset and plan a meeting with the manager this week to my bank in regards to this kind of situation. I was in the midst of opening the 7th business and they were coming over to open it at the main office. However, when they come over, they will get an ear full of the treatment. If they can afford to lose people in these times, then I can leave.

I bought a puppy at The Pet Company which was on sale for around $500. I hesitated, thought maybe there is something wrong with it but the sales rep told me that she's up on her shots, eats healthy, that she's on sale because she is teething and is six months old and also teething so I bought her anyway. I had 14 days to take her to the vet so I did so. On the 10th day, I got her and took her to my vet rather than the one they recommended. My vet told me that she has grade 3 out of 4 patellar luxation and is unfit for sale.
I took back a letter she gave me stating everything about business law and her condition and filed a claim to get my money back or have them pay for the surgery she needs. It's been over a month and still I have no answer from them. I even sent a letter to the chairman, Christopher Brooks, but according to the secretary, he hasn't been in the office to read it. Now, when I called back for the third time, another lady gets on the phone telling me they want my dog scanned to make sure it's theirs. They want x-rays to prove her condition and that once I do all that, she is only worth $200 so that is all they will give me.
The surgery at a board certified surgeon can cost up to $2500 a leg so now the burden of surgery was transferred to me. On top of the vaccination list I was given, there was no license number of the vet so I don't know if I can trust the shots. I feel lied to and basically got a dog that now will cost me $5000 to keep. I am determined that this place needs to be shut down. The dogs are sick or have serious conditions and the buyers are being fooled by their "$200 off all puppies" sale they have going on every other week. I want to press charges against them. I want them to pay for the surgery my dog needs in the very near future if I still want her running around in the future.

I purchased a puppy from the The Pet Company store in a local mall. The sales rep. sold me on buying the pup when she told me I could get 0% financing for 6 months if I open a Pet Company credit card. I did and charged most of the purchase. The credit card bill clearly states a penalty will be charged if payment is not received by the 13th. After the second payment, I received a penalty of $29.
I inquired about the penalty, since the second payment was made on the 13th and the third payment was made on the 17th. The person who answered the phone told me both payments were credited on the second month, therefore, I was late, not early for payment three. I asked when the statement closes and was told the 17th. The fifth month, I made the payment on the 19th. Again, I was charged a $29 penalty.
I called and spoke with the same person. He said they decided to close on the 20th that particular month. While I was disputing the payment, the introductory period ran out and I had to pay interest on the entire amount charged. I went to the Better Business Bureau web-site and see other similar complaints have been filed.
I ended up paying almost $100 in pentalties and interest on a $600 initial balance on an interest free credit card. I contacted the CT Department of Banking. Although my contact was sympathetic, he suggested I pay so my credit would not be adversely affected.

I went in to THE PET COMPANY on Saturday night. Not only do the dogs lok dirty and sick, the hamsters and gerbils in the back of the store were being neglected. There was no food or water in most of the cages and they were running around in panic looking for something. When i asked for a manager Sam came and sad that the manager did not want to talk with us and that he will help. Sam was argumentative with me and did not know anything about hamsters and sounded very ignorant. I waited 45 minutes until food and water was properly added to the hamster cages. It was so upsetting. When i approached Jen, the manager on duty, she refused to give me the phone number or her last name. Not onl do they treat their animals poorly their customer service extremely poor. I will never buy anything from them again.

On March 28th 2009 I went into the Pet Company at Stonecrest Mall. I was surprised to see a german shepherd there I had been looking at getting one and decided to see if I could play with it. I stood there for a long time waiting to see if any of the workers passing, would ask if I needed assistants. Finally I decide to ask someone, I went straight over to this guy worker, looked him straight in the eye so that I knew I had his attention and said could you please help me.The guy was looking me dead in the face and just ignored me and walked away. I felt like he was being racist towards me for no reason I just wanted to play with the puppy and who knows I might have bought it. Instead he goes and ignores me and talks to his coworkers.

I purchased a puppy from The Pet Co. in Menlo Park Mall, Edison, NJ on 2/21/09. I was assured she was healthy and nothing was wrong with her. I specifically asked Mark. From the moment I brought her home she was throwing up. I contacted the store and spoke with Mark, who is one of the managers and informed him that the dog is vomiting. The first time I called he said, Maybe she is car sick. The second time I called he suggested that its the new food, so I went back to get the food she was accustomed to. This didn't work either. It was then suggested to me maybe she vomiting because she misses the dog that she was in a crate with.
The very next day on 2/22 I called the emergency vet. in Iselin NJ, who suggested I try giving her small portions of food. Each time I fed my new Lab puppy, Abby she would throw up along with intermittent diarhea. She could not even drink water without throwing up within 5 minutes of trying to eat or drink. On Tuesday, 2/24 I took off of work and brought her to Iselin Veterinary Hospital. She was examined to Dr. who treated her for gastroenteritis and provided me with an Cert. of Unfitness. Abby was not improving and on 2/26 I brought her back to the Veterinary Hospital. Abby was examined again, and was not getting better. In six days she was only to hold down two meals. X-rays were taken, which were normal, however, a sonogram revealed her ilum was paralyzed and not moving, thus the food was not moving, along with extremely swollen lymph nodes.
Drs. suspected that Abby had an obstruction. However, the ONLY way to tell would be surgery. If Abby did have an obstruction and it was not removed, she would die. So, at 7:30 PM, after much stress, I did what any decent person would do and wanted my dog saved. So...surgery concluded that she did not have an obstruction but had a severely inflamed ileus, enlarged lymph nodes, giardia. I was able to pick Abby up on Saturday 2/26 and was given another Cert. of Unfit for Sale. I presented this to the Puppy Store on 2/26, along with the bills I incurred from being sold a sick dog.
The total cost to date is $3052.29 not to mention the $1100. I paid for Abby. Actually, that same evening I had to take her back to an emergency clinic because she was throwing up worms. I did all the right things. Followed all the rules laid out under the consumer rights law. On March 17, I contacted Nancy regarding my claim. She informed me that she hasn't even looked at it yet. I informed her that it clearly states in the Consumer Rights page that If the pet dealer or owner or operator of the pet shop does not contest the matter, he must make the refund, replacement of animal or reimbursement not later than 10 after receiving the veterinary certification. Nancy clearly told me they don't go by that. I told her it was the law, she said they have too many claims and 10 days are not possible. I told her that her answer is unacceptable, and I would get an attorney if needed.
She told me she would get back with me when she found my claim. When she did, she said it couldn't be read, too light. I suggested she called my vet and he would give her all the necessary information to process. Well, when she called me back, she informed me the Pet Co, would only be responsible for approximately $192.00 of my claim. They would not pay for surgery because it was exploratory, looking for an obstruction. Nancy also told me she would give this matter to her regional manager, who would contact me. No one called. I feel first of all they did not comply with the law set forth by the State of NJ, no one contact me, I did all the calling. Along with this, my dog was sick from the second I brought her home. I was totally misled about being sold a healthy puppy.
Also, they are not doctors of veterinary medicine. They should not decide what treatment is required for an animal, it is the doctor's decision what is needed. I could have returned this puppy, but do not feel that is the right thing to do, but I do feel they are responsible for all expenses I have incurred. I was also told the Abby was not from a puppy mill, I am suspecting she most definitely was.
I have had a problem with this store previously, where my dog died of a congenital disease. The only reason I purchased another dog from them was that since the death of my Labradoodle, they would only give me credit toward a replacement puppy. I am stressed and sickened by this whole episode. In less than one week of getting a new dog, which should have been a happy occasion, I have lost work time and thousands of dollars due to neglect and irresponsibility of The Pet Co. Inc. PLEASE HELP!
To date the cost is $3052.39 and rising since additional medication is still necessary to test and control parasites.

My Boyfriend and I had purchased a toy yorkie on 02/06/09 for $1600 with an additional warrantee for a total of $2000. The warrantee was valid only if we had taken the dog to the Vet within 14 days. The dog (Riley) was taken to the Vet on 02/09/09 he was diagnosed with a parasite. The following week we had to take him back to the Vet and he was treated for kennel cough. Riley did not respond to antibiotic therapy after a week and was hospitalized for pneumonia for 5 days. While in the hospital Riley suffered from several seizures.Riley has now been diagnosed with a liver shunt which is congenital. He will need a very expensive surgery.
My family is heartbroken and I am very angry that I only had Riley a month and he is a very sick dog.The Vet bills already exceeded the cost of the dog. The Pet Company is selling sick dogs. DO NOT BUY FROM THE PET COMPANY SAVE YOURSELF THE HEARTACHE!

This a long story, which I can send you all sorts of sales slips Vet. bills. to summarize, I bought a pet which after many attempts to return, cure, and help a very sick puppy from the above mentioned co. After the attacked people on numerous occasions (pictures available) my children and myself, I had to have the puppy euthanised at my pain and expense. I am being constantly called to continue to pay for a puppy which I spent hundreds of dollars on. Not only in payments for the UNFIT FOR SALE PUPPY but also Vet. bills. I am willing to send letters, pictures, and claims from Myself, THE PET CO. and three different Vets.

I want to report the horribly awful conditions that animals are stored at the Pet Company here at the Menlo Park Mall. 1. They are put in tiny metal cages. 2. They are not allowed to roam around freely at any time during the day (I have never seen it in the many many trips I have made to the Mall.) 3. No one plays with the dogs. They are isolated for extended periods of time. 4. There is no access to fresh air or sunlight in the store. 5. They are often put into cages with other dogs. This means the very tiny cage is now even tinier. If they are lucky, the other dog is friendly and they can at least lay on each other and rest. But otherwise, this is a very crowded situation. 6. Their existence in cages goes on for an unlimited number of days and nights.
Isn't there something we can all do about this sitaution starting with the pet store in our neighbourhood? How can this poor treatment of animals be lawful? What would it take for the pet store to be raided, fined and brought into court for trial? When will the animals finally be treated humanely? Please, some one , some organization help us solve this. This is a desperate situation and it is untolerable.

I just wanted to crespond to some of the negative comments about Pet Company stores across the country. I have only been to one Pet Company, at Roosevelt Field Mall on Long Island, and have purchased two puppies from there. Each time I went in there the cages were clean and so were the puppies. I never thought I'd buy a pet store dog but it's hard to resist a puppy who really wants you to take him home. The first puppy we got there was a 3 month old Collie. We named him Mason and he'll be 5 in a few months. He is the kindest, sweetest dog and has never been sick.
We even went to the vet reccomended by the store and have continued to go there. The vet is Quality Veternary care and we really like Dr. M and his staff. The second dog we got there was a 5 month old Sheltie who we named Lincoln. He is 8 months old now and very healthy. You couldn't meet a sweeter dog. The staff at the store was very fond of Lincoln and one of the employees, I think his name was Kermit, told us Lincoln was the best dog ever and he was right. I can't speak for any other locations and I know there are so many people out there who do not care for animals the way they should but my experiences with The Pet Company at Roosevelt Field Mall were both positive. Thank you

So far, all of the reports are about either cats, dogs, and bunnies. Does anyone care for the other pets? At the Pet Company in Westfield Sunrise Mall in Massapequa, the dogs are kept in the most horrible conditions, Yes. We checked out the place and saw a large tank full of birds. They did seem a little overcrowded in my opinion.
There was also a 10 gallon tank with at least 10 over-priced baby Bearded Dragons. They were quite active and looked Healthy but at $90, yes $90, they were nearly twice the amount a breeder would have them (and remember, Breeders are usually far more expensive than pet stores). In fact, I checked online and found a breeder who had a fully-grown SunFire Beardie for $90. They had absolutely no fish for sale, and the Beardies were the only reptiles except for a little tank that would probably had anoles in it though there were none at the time.
They had a bunch of rodents in 10 gallon tanks. They had 2 male Gerbils in the same tank and they were attacking each other. We were sold 3 dwarf hamsters on a discount and were told that they it was a mom and 2 babies. the lady who was helping us, a slightly snotty 18-year-old, refused to touch them when we decided on the deal. She went away and came back with a much older women, maybe in her 30's and she got them out for us. We are now suckers, as we have found out that the 2 babies are actually 2 nearly full-grown males, who will have a small fight a few times a day, but no physical damage has been done at this time. NEVER buy ANYTHING from the pet prison.

I walked into the store between the hours of 5:30-6:30 pm. There where several dogs eating their fesses. I brought it to the attention of the cashier and it was taken care of. My complaint is that the dogs where very hungry and should not have been in the position to have to eat their own fesses.

My fiancee bought a maltese puppy at Croosgates Mall at The Pet Company and the puppy seemed fine. The day before x-mas our dog Shaggy seemed to have a cold in his left eye. Over that weekend both of his eyes became very gooey and closed shut. I brought him to the doctors and they said he basically had pink eye and he wasn't producing any tears. So they gave him eye drops and oniment for his eyes. Then he went back one week later and his eyes weren't any better and his behavior wasn't himself. He's a very hyper dog and barks all the time. All he does now is sleep and he's not eating.
So then the doctor did tests and said that he has ulsers on his eyes and that there has to be something else wrong with him because of his behavior change. So he was then put on 2 eye oniments, plus artifical tear drops, and 2 pills. I went back to the doctors one week later and his left eye is better, but the right eye isn't better and there could be a possiblitiy that he could lose his right eye. But the blood work came back and there is something wrong with his liver. He needs more medication, ultrasounds, and biopsy, which I can't afford. And even after all these tests he can still die. They want to start him on the medication that I just can't afford to prolong his life.
We contacted the Pet Company at Colonie Center because the one where we bought the dog is closed and they had us fill out claim forms to get reinbrusted for the vet. bills, and we explained that the dog will die due to the fact that his liver is infected. In our paperwork it says that if the dog should die within the year of purchase and we prove that we took care of the dog and give copies of all medical files of the dog we could get store credit. Right now they are saying that we probably won't get reinbrusted for the vet. bills and we won't get some kind of store credit. My vet is in the process of writing up a letter explaining how sick the dog is. But the people in the main office were very rude and nasty.
We can no longer afford all these medical bills and he's going to die within a matter of a few months. My children are very upset to see that the dog is just lying around not playing. We have to make a decision on to try to come up with money for all the meds. and tests even though he will eventually die, or do we just put him asleep so he doesn't suffer anymore and not get reinbrusted, when this is still under the one year contract.

I went to buy a bigger bird cage and one of the employees was nice trying to help find what we needed. until a sales associate named lisa started helping us we had an attitude refusing to sell us the cage when we asked her for her manager she said she was the manager and started raising her voice. I told her she did not need to get an attitude and she started cursing as me telling me to bring it [expletive]. He used the f word several times and told me that that is why she works with animals so u wouldnt have to deal with people like me.
I am extremely hurt because my nephew Dexter really loves his bird and it needs a bigger cage or it will die. Her yelling and disrespecting me caused my nephew to be sad. I would like something to be done cuz she was rude and she did not have to be. All we wanted was a cage.

I went into the The Pet Company at the Pailsades Mall. How is this allowed? The puppies are in tiny cages with only the metal to lie on. They seemed lethargic and sad. Then one employee working in the back picked up a puppy and threw it into the cage! It is not the puppy's fault that he is too fat to bend down! This was a tiny Bichon pup. I complained to the girl at the front desk who just stared at me. This store and those like them should be shut down -- this is nothing but animal cruelty.
The puppy might have been injured -- not sure.

I called about a miniature poodle my daughter and I had spent time with earlier in the day. I was told by Corey at the Pet Company in Hamilton Place Mall/Chattanooga, Tn, that all I needed to do was bring my ID and cash/check/credit card and the poodle would be mine. I drove over 30 miles to the Pet Company at 8 pm. By the time I arrived, he had sold the dog to another customer. He explained to me that I should have made a 'down payment' over the phone and then he could have 'held' the dog. This devastated my daughter. After what I have read on the internet about this company, I am most thankful to God that we did not purchase this dog.

First off, I'd like to mention that I've worked in the veterinary field for about 8 years now and know full well that pet stores get their puppies from brokers who get them from puppy mills. That being said, I went into The Pet Company in the CT Post Mall in Milford in April 2007 specifically to see if they were selling French bulldogs. I work with a woman who is a reputable and respected breeder with champion Frenchies and who also works with French bulldog rescue. I was helping her scout for Frenchies being sold in pet stores.
What I saw instead was a Neapolitan mastiff. In case you aren't sure what one is, they're a rare breed from Italy that can easily reach 200 pounds. The puppy was about 4 months old and roughly 40 pounds. Very scrawny and skinny too. My heart went out to this baby and I just couldn't leave him there. The average person walking into a pet store to purchase a poodle or a Yorkie isn't going to know the first thing about caring for a dog that gets that big, requires a knowledgeable owner, and is naturally dominant and protective.
What scares me the most is there is a breeder out there selling these dogs to pet stores. A Neapolitan mastiff in the wrong hands could be the next monster dog you hear about all over the news. So, as I said, I couldn't leave this dog there. Against my better judgment, I purchased him for the insane amount of more than $2000. Luckily, the only health problems he's suffered so far is entropion.
This is common in many breeds, including the Neapolitan. The eyelids turn inward, causing the eyelashes to make contact with the eye itself and cause irritation. I'm constantly cleaning his eyes of boogers. He's also continued to stay scrawny and lanky, which just goes to show what a bad specimen of his breed he is at almost 2 years of age. He weighs 116 pounds and should probably weigh a lot more. I realize having him neutered can cause this kind of change as well, but even as a young puppy he didn't resemble purebred Neapolitans.
I just wanted to voice my opinion, not just about this store, but pet stores in general. They're terrible places to buy dogs and cats because they get them from less than desirable places. They aren't fit to care for dogs in places where they can't even go outside to use the bathroom. What dog wants to stay in a cage all day? When I brought him outside to walk him to the car, he acted like he'd never seen the outside world. And he probably hadn't. Everything terrified him. Cars, people, walking on different surfaces. The Pet Company's billing services leave something to be desired as well.
On more than one occasion, I haven't even received a bill for a particular month. Then when I receive the next one, they charge me a late fee for the previous month. How dare you charge me a late fee when I never even received a bill! I've written to them about it, and luckily they did credit the late fee. Who knows if they'll do it again though. I beg you. Adopt a dog from a shelter, or find a reputable breeder who does genetic and other health testing. You'll save money in the long-run.
So far, I haven't had any severe economic or physical damage from this. I'm sure its only a matter of time though. However, I would call the more than $2000 I paid for this dog an economic damage. I don't believe pet stores have a right to sell those dogs for such high prices when they probably only pay fractions of that to stock them in the store like merchandise.

For the past few weeks, I have been Christmas Shopping and would stop by the Pet Company store to look at the puppies. Everytime that I had visited, the puppies seem to be neglected. Most of them were covered in dried feces, urine and hair was matted. Looked like they never had a bath. Several dogs were laying in the feces and eating it as well! The store had a bad odor and was unorganized. Many of the workers were High School kids who knew nothing about the pets.
One of the workers behind the cages in the back was actually yelling and screaming at the puppies. Can you imagine what he does when no one is around? Another worker was behind the cashier's counter eating food. Where is the management? Better yet how about the training on handling such delicate animals.
I walked around the store only to notice more and more dirty cages with dried feces smeered on the glass, puppies stepping in the feces and one dog (pug) was pranching around his feces smelling wandering if he should eat it. Are these puppies getting fed? Sometimes you wander.
The more I looked around I kept noticing more and more. I saw a dead mouse in one cage and I told the worker to remove it. I also saw two puppies (daschund)fighting so bad that I demand one of the workers to seperate them. I also had my eye on one of them for a few weeks because it was a female dapple, mini that I've been looking for.
It's a shame how animals are mistreated and cared for. This is why the company needs to be looked into and possibilty shut down as with all pet stores.
Back in April 2008 I did purchase a daschund puppy from this particular store. I had trouble receiving his pedigree papers. I went round and round with the Pet Company, Hunte Corporation (they are the ones who buy from puppy mills) and the breeder which I was able to locate. I did so much research only to find more corupted individuals who always don't know anything or don't want to admit to anything. Understanding how the system works help too!
My puppy had no health issues or behavior issues. He is actually a great puppy with a good sense humor. This goes to show you when they are given love and care unlike the pet stores where there is none of that.

In January of 2007 I purchased a 3 month old Bichon Poodle mix. While at the store I asked to see Casey (that is her name) when the employee brought her out to play with my other dog to see if they got along I noticed that she had a tiny limp. I asked the employee about this limp and he told me that it was probably because she was laying on her leg in the cage.
Once Casey began to play with charlie (my other dog) I did not notice the limp anymore. I purchased Casey for about $1100 without a 1 yr warranty but the store gave me a 6 month warranty. The store informed me that I had 14 days to take Casey to their vet free of charge. Long story short their vet found nothing wrong with Casey and said she was fit for sale.
Casey's limp got increasing worse which I then took her to a different vet. The other vet. found that Casey had what was called Hip Dysplasia Disease and needs surgery. I called the store to inform them that I was told this was a pre-existing condition and the manager told me that I was 1 month shy of the warranty and that there is nothing they can do for me. This surgery is going to cost me $2000 which I dont have. My poor dog walks on three legs and I have to give her St. Joseph aspirin for the pain.
Im trying to save money for the surgery but in the mean time by dog suffers because the store sold me a dog that had a pre-existing condition.

The place was disgusting, the dog all had feces and urine in their cage and the place smell awful. I was looking at the hamster and complained that there was two dead ones in the cage and a lot of sick ones.

I purchased a white Mini-Schnauzer in April for about $1200 at The Pet Company in the South Shore Mall in Bayshore, NY. The day I picked her up, most of her white hair was yellow from dried urine. While I was paying for her, I was told they were going to take her in the back to clean her up. Poor thing didn't even get a bath. They sprayed doggie perfume on her to cover the smell of pee. That's what they considered cleaning her up. Mini Schnauzers are supposed to be no more than about 15 pounds. My girl is a moose in comparison, she is 25 pounds! As she's gotten older, she doesn't much look like a Schnauzer, but then again, I thought it was because I do not have the traditional Schnauzer haircut on her. As her hair has gotten longer since her last grooming I noticed her hair seems to be curlier that I would have expected.
I started to suspect she may be a Schnoodle. I did some searching on Google and found several pictures of Schnoodles that look just like Pickles (that's her name). So as far as I am concerned, her breed type was misrepresented not only at the store, but also on the breeder's certificate. Don't get me wrong, I didn't set out to buy a Mini-Schnauzer, so I'm not heart broken that she's not a purebreed, but I think it's ridiculous that she cost so much money when she's actually a hybrid.
I think The Pet Company can do better in their research and endorsement of breeders. Obviously, this breeder has no integrity nor does The Pet Company. Just a side note: Though I know most people believe that puppies shouldn't be purchased at pet stores because of the puppy mill factor. However, I feel that these poor animals were brought into this world and still need homes regardless. I know it's a vicious cycle, but if we don't adopt these puppies from the pet stores, what happens to them? I shudder to think.

I purchased a teacup yorkie for almost $2000 from The Pet Company over the summer. While holding him in the store, I noticed his nose was running and asked an associate if he was sick. He said that he probably just had a cold and that he couldn't be sick because he was on preventative meds. Three days after I took him home, he fell seriously ill and I had to rush him to the vet. He was in the hospital for severe pneumonia, and they weren't sure if he was going to pull through.
A week later, my little guy was released and I brought him home only to bring him back to the hospital less than a week later. The vet declared him unfit for sale, and told me that the pet store should pay all of my vet bills. In the contract I signed with the pet store, it says that they pay up to double the cost of the dog for vet bills. Well, my total bill was over $3000.
I have received less than $2300 and I had to continuously call and follow up just to get that amount. They also lied to me and told me a second check was being sent, and when I called back they told me that there was no such check. I am now being harassed by a collection agency because of this vet bill. The pet company is a SCAM. They lie, and do not take care of their puppies. I am so thankful that my dog made it through, but I am completely frustrated that these people can get away with complete neglect of these puppies as well as the customers. I also believe that my dog is not the pure bred that they claim he is, but that's a whole different story.
I had to put the money up front for the vet bill. I had to borrow from friends and family, and I even used my rent money. I am now struggling financially and i'm trying to pay off the $700 remainder of the vet bill that was sent to collections. The collections agency is continuously harassing me but I just can not afford to pay the full amount. It has been very stressful, and even more so knowing that this is happening to other people and something needs to be done to change it.

Look at a female bulldog puppy that was 13 days short of being five months old. She was sweet and loving but was having problems walking. We were left in the room with the puppy and after about a half hour, still no one to discuss the puppy. When I went and inquired, I was told she was $4,170 and had been $5,000. No wonder she was there for so long! I went home and called them concerned of her age and apparent physical problem and was told that she would be transferred to Hamilton Mall because that was their top selling store. When questioning them about her physical problem, they basically said it was because she was fat. When I asked what would happen to the dog if she had a physical defect, I was told they would pay for the surgery. I honestly think I was being given a line of bull.

I bought a puppy at this store on 11/8/08. The puppy cost $1259.99 however there was a Piece of Mind Warranty for $125.99 as well as a Piece of Mind Platinmum warranty for an additional $99.99 charged to me. I said I did not want either one but was told by the salesperson as well as the manager that I had no choice. I could not buy the puppy if I did not accept and pay for these warranties. Needless to say, I paid for these warranties even though I did not want them.
I do not believe this is legal. If a warranty is on a product, it is either included in the price or offered as the buyers option. Ive never heard of being forced to purchase a warranty in order to puchase the product. We fell in love with this puppy and I feel that the pet store took advantage of myself and my family. Knowing how suseptible we were, they knew we would pay these additional fees in order to take our puppy home. Can a company do this? Force a consumer to purchase warranties in order to make the purchase? I believe the parent company is called United Pet Supply, Inc. 100 Campus Drive, suite 101, Marlboro, NJ 07751 (732) 617-6771
Thank you for your attention in this matter.

We purchased a dog at from them and they represented that the dog was a pure canine comming from a reputible kennel with a valid dog breeder. On the papers we received they listed a breeders name under a line titled Breeder Name and a kennels name on a line entitled Kennel Name. They also game me what they said was a full medical discloser and medical records they said we complete.
I took the dog to the vet to insure the dog would be cared for correctly. the vet found what oould be signs or either mites or a fungus around the eye. Upon inpection of the medical report received from the company the records did indicate skin problems and a upper respitory infection but did not indicate when, how long it lasted or any detail on the skin problem. The dog also had an upper respitory problem and had to be put on anti biotics for a week.
When I researched the breeder and kennel I found that there was no records of any sort that I could find on the breeder and that the kennel listed was simply a dog broker and not a kennel. This I feel is misrepresentation! I called the company to ask for two things. First I wanted a complete doctors report on past history so that my present doctor could understand what the dog has had. I also asked for additional information about the dogs blood line because if there we heridary problems the vet would have a better chance for treatment if problems occur. I also asked to contact the breeder and information about the kennel. I ask talk to the district manager of the company also.
After a week nothing has happened, I call the store and talked to the manager but she did not call me back after a second call either. This company clearly misrepresents what they sell! This practice needs to be stopped and they should disclose all facts.

I went into petco about a year ago to find a cat to bring home and when I asked the manager about the cat she said that it was going to be euthenized tomorrow. When I asked if I could buy it she said your house is to small. I couldnt believe that she had said that because she nor anybody else that worked thier had ever been to my house before. So now that cat is dead instead of being with kids that will love it.

I had bought a Golden Retriever puppy from this pet shop sometime back. But unfortunately the puppy turned out to be aggressive (highly unlikely of a normal golden breed) There would be atleast 2 phases during the day when the puppy would become ferocious and try to bite someone, which was very difficult to control. It even bit my son (1 year old) and tore the trouser he was wearing. As a result, we decided to return the puppy to the store, within 3 days of purchase, as it was apparant, even though the puppy was physically fit, it had some serious mental/psychological issues.
I got back 80% of the price I paid for the transaction - (this was agreed upon, if I returned the dog, I will get 80% back), and the shop refused to take back the cage I also bought from there. The facts under which I had to return the puppy is very unusual, if someone knows the nature of the goldens.... However, today we went to the store and wanted to check out on a labrador puppy. The salesman refused to show us the puppy, telling us they would not sell/show any more puppy to us since we returned a healthy dog. The salesman also added that he was conveying what has been directed by the store manager/owner.
I have lost around $500.00 in the initial transaction and have suffered mental humiliation in today's incident. I'm a regular to the store, as I also maintain other pets, and this is not the way to treat a customer.

Well I bought a dwarf rabbit for 59.99. Well I thought that I would be able to return the rabbit being that I asked the sales girl Kim and I thought that she said 7 days. ( not understanding if I brought the rabbit back dead) Well the rabbit was not working out it was peeing every time we took him out and he started to bite. I call and talk to a guy he said no I couldnt return the rabbit only if it was dead.
so I asked to speak to the manger and of course he said he was the manger so I asked if there was someone above him and of course he said he was the region manger. I think this place is the worse pet store around...I will never buy another animal from them again.

This is not a complaint in anyway. I understand that the stores vary between states and companies, and depending on management could be even more understandable why people are getting terrible service and unhealthy pets. The pet company, located in Town Center Mall, has by far the best management. The puppies are kept in great condition... they are fed very well, the temperature in the kennel in perfect and the puppies are bathed every single week, their ears are kept clean, their shots and de-wormings are kept fully up-to-date.
If there is a sign of sickness in any puppy they are checked immediately by the vet and are treated, the puppies are handled with extra love and care and DO NOT COME FROM PUPPY MILLS they all come from federally licensed breeders located throughout the country . As far as the other pets go, they are all kept in cages and tanks that are kept clean and stocked with food and water that is changed daily. The animals and reptiles and other pets are kept very healthy and happy. If you don't believe me, check it out yourself. If you walk into the store you wont even believe its a pet store. Its kept very clean and doesn't smell like the majority of other stores you could walk into.

My daughter and I went into the Pet Company in the Connecticut Post Mall in Milford, CT. We left very upset after seeing many small sickly and sad puppies in tiny cages. They had no toys, no food and slept on metal bottoms with drain holes. The cages reminded me of large fish tanks. Many of the puppies were raised by individuals in KS or MO. They were then purchased from Lambriar, KS and Hunte Corp, MO. The information was on their cages.
We did some research on the internet to find Hunte and Lambriar purchase and transport puppies from puppy mills. I am not surprised after seeing the state of the puppies. I felt terrible for the poor little Italian greyhound pup that was there. I know they shake, but this poor thing was shaking and trying to get comfortable on the metal drain floor he had to sleep on. I asked the price on this little puppy, and was shocked to find out he was $1529.00.

I've heard and still hear bad things about pet store dogs. I got one as a Christmas gift in 2007 and he's the best dog. People always tell me how lucky I am to have such a good dog, he's a shih tzu and he's 8 months now, he was 3 months when I got him. He did have quite a bit of **** dried into the fur around his butt which I had to have shaved at the vet, and I will agree with the fact that the dogs are not kept as clean as they should be but overall I am really happy and I'm actually buying another shih tzu girl this Thursday!
They tell you right up front that there's no refunds but that if you get them checked out by the vet and there's something wrong that they'll cover the vet costs. You have to know what you're walking into when you go into a pet store but a lot of breeders I've gone too left me feeling more uneasy than the pet store did. I'm extremely happy with my dog and I don't see any problems this time with the dog I'm getting from the colonie center store.

10 Yrs ago I bought what I thought was a Shiba Inu from The Pet Company in Middletown NY. I have papers (which I am doubting now) that say hes a Shiba Inu. It just happened that I came upon a picture of a Jindo which is a cousin of the Shiba Inu. I did research on Jindos and The Jindo is much bigger than a Shiba Inu which my dog is considerably larger that your average Shiba Inu. I had always thought that my dog was just a reject and turned out bigger than the rest bur now I am questioning if he is even a Shiba Inu. I have been researching the papers I have and everything is turning up negative. The Pet Company that I bought him from has left the area and I cannot find a number for them. I am not sure how to go about proving he is not what his papers say he is. Jindos arent very poplar in America but look alot like Shibas only bigger. Can someone please help me

I went into the pet store and looked at a Minature Pinscher. As we were playing with the puppy the sales person, Josh said he could run my credit for 6 months same as cash. All he needed was my drivers licence and a major credit card. I persented this to him and he ran the credit check. After purchasing the dog and returning home for several days my bank called questioning some action on my credit card. I then found out that some one in the store had made a copy of my credit card and charged several items on the card. Lucky for me the card only had a small limit and was almost at that limit. Had this been my bank card I would have been in more trouble then I am now.
I called the store and spoke to April, the store manager, who asked me how I could prove to her that it was done there. I can not prove this to her but I know that store was the only place I had that card out at. I had not used that card for weeks and do not use if much at all so I am sure it was done there. I was only passing through Georgia to get home to Alabama. I am curently filling a police report and talking to the main office in New Jersey. I recommend that if you do use this store and apply for credit watch them scan your card so this does not happen to anyone else. It could of been worse.
I am still concerned about them having my driver licence info. I trust the sales persons in the store to handle my credit card and confidential documents and was violated. It cost me serval hundred dollars and possible questionable credit. I have spent time to contact the store owners to make them aware of what has happened and no one seems to be worried. I feel like my privacy rights have been compromised.

Well to everyone who has complained about cleanliness in The Pet Company Stores. Please call ASPCA when you see sick animals or dead animals in those stores.TRUST ME I HAVE! I used to work at The Pet Company. Their employees have absolutely no training. Except of course how to set up a payment plan. This company revolves around sales. They buy from puppy mills down south. If you don't believe me check the papers. Youll see Georgia, Alabama etc... Some of the papers they offer aren't even registered with AKA! They buy the dogs at a fraction of the cost and you the customer ends up paying in the thousands. This company purchases puppies between 199.00 - 300.00.
When the puppies are bused in from down south they are dehydrated, hypoglycemic, worm infected, and sometimes have ear and eye infections. Then the managers, not the vets who are trained about a handful of times are allowed to give shots to keep up with vaccinations. Most other animals sold there are in worse off condition. Sometimes when exotic animals were ordered no one kept tabs on who was eating and who was not. Reptiles were keep in plastic containers not proper tanks with appropriate heating. Finicky eaters were not taken care of properly. Fish, and turtle enclosures had no heating. The Pet Company should be out of business.

I saw all the bad reviews about The Pet Company, and I know it's bad to buy a pet shop dog, but I bought my maltese in Menlo Park Mall. He's almost 2.5 years old now and he's WONDERFUL. Sweet and loving, an absolute great dog. He was never sick and I wish I could get another one.

On Saturady, May 2, 2008, my daughter and I visited The Pet Company in the Rotterdam Square Mall. We asked to see the long-haired dashund. It was a male and born in February. This poor little defenseless puppy just reeked of urine. His little tail was drenched with urine as were his feet. We were deeply saddened for this little pooch. Aren't there any surprise state inspections in pet stores? If not, there definitely should be!
When I told the clerk (I was too upset to notice her name) to come get him, I told her he desperately needed a bath as he was soaked with urine. She just looked at me like I had three heads! I find the conditions at The Pet Store deplorable. Something needs to be done to protect these innocent animals. We purchased a dashund just before Christmas at the Pet Company in Witon Mall in Saratoga. Our pup became lethargic and had a horrible cough just 3 days after she was home. We had to get her to the vet twice in one week. She had kennel cough and a bad respiratory infectiion, antibiotics and an antibiotic booster injection were given.
After one week, she wasn't getting much better and another injection had to be given along with another round of antibiotics and cough syrup. It took a good 4 weeks until she was feeling better. We had to wait to purchase her because she was too young - it's a good thing we purchased her as soon as she was able to leave or she probably wouldn't have made it. She's a beautiful very happy puppy now because we take such excellent care of her no thanks to The Pet Company. They should be heavily fined and shut down!

My 17 yr old minor daughter purchased an Iquana and a Dome Light from this pet store. Her father and I did not give consent for her to purchase a pet. After she was informed from another pet store the the pet had a long life expectancy, could grow to approx 6 ft. and required maximum attention including the responsibililty of baths, exercise, feedings, etc.She returned to the store with the receipt which states "30 day merchandise refund/exchange with receipt".
The sales associate, Stephanie, would not give her a refund. Her reason given was they do not give refunds for live animals, only dead ones. It does not say this anywhere on the receipt. My daughter then called my husband and I to ask for help. My husband asked to speak to Stephanie, but she refused to speak with him or give a reason. My husband, who is recovering from Larynx cancer and myself whom is permanantly disabled managed to transport ourselves the mall, which is no easy task on a Friday night. Stephanie told us she would not refund and to leave the store.
My husbands neck and face are red from radiation therapy so he looks slightly disfugured. She was very antaganizing towards him causing him to become angry. Security and the local police arrived as they were told my husband was yelling and in a rage. He does yell as he can't hear or speak very well from the radiation therapy. I begged her to please take the pet as it was going to dye in this box. She had no care for the pet whatsoever, only the cash and the sale.
Finally, after much beggin and pleading she was forced to keep the pet. I told her the pet was dying and she would be responsible if she didn't return it to it's shelter with food and water. After other customers began to nod in agreement with me, she, in a very mean manner grabbed the box from me. My only care at this time was the safety of the pet. The police office asked us to leave, so we left without the refund.
As I said, my only concern at that time was for the Iguana. I felt I would take up the refund with management the next business day. Stephanie gave me and invalid phone # for the owner. She also said she was the manager which is not true, I must assume there was no manager on site. suffered from this stress. I still can't get over this. My concern is the statement from Stephanie that they would have refunded had the pet been dead. My God, people kill and torture pets for a lot less than $48.13. This is a deadly policy that has to be terminated. It will only encourage cruel and unstable and evil people to kill the pets.

I have a lot to say about the pet company in the Wilton mall, which I think needs to be shut down. First, the manager Linda doesn't know a thing about animals. She tried to tell me information and she argued with me about what I was saying. All she does is sit on the phone and talk about disgusting things. Her employees are frustrated with the way she treats animals and them. She yells at them in front of customers and treats them like dirt. An insider told me there is sick dogs in the back that she never personally cares for and freezes animals that are sick instead of helping them. There have been many puppy deaths and lies to customers when she says the pups aren't from puppy farms. I've seen the puppy truck they come from. Definitely a farm, do not buy a dog from the pet company wilton mall.

In the Milford mall, there is a Pet Company. I wanted to go look around so I went in there and turned right back around. Why? Because they had little and big puppies in TEENY TINY cages with nothing to comfort them or any food or anything. This is not right. Dogs, especially puppies, NEED to run around and get active! And it's absolutely terrible to have puppies in ridiculously small cages. Are they from puppy mills? That's even worse. How would you feel if you were condensed in a small cage every day of your life until just any person in the world comes and buys you? What if that person takes even worse care of the cute little pups? Pease do not keep little puppies in that pet store, in the MALL nonetheless.
There were sad, poor, unhealthy, and even dead puppies.

To any and all who buy a puppy from a retail store: get educated. It seems to me that these stores only survive because people purchase from them; tell everyone you know to only buy from a reputable breeder. Go to www.akc.org if you need to find one in your area or attend a local AKC dog show. According to AKC rules, you are to receive AKC registration papers at the time of purchase; if you do not get them then do not take the puppy.... You will never see them, and chances are they will be fake anyway. The puppies sold in these stores may be massed produced in horrible conditions. They may be kept in large rabbit hutch type cages, and when the mothers are no longer able to breed, might be shot and dumped in a hole to be used as fertilizer. Read information about Puppy Mills, and you will understand why places such as this need to be shut down permanently.

I am an employee at The Pet Company in the Hamilton Place Mall in Chattanooga, TN. I have read some of the other comments about this store and find it unimaginable. The store I work at is always kept incredibly tidy. We have Kennel Care employees who work solely with the animals, while the Sales Associates (which is what I am) deal with the customers. We all work together to get the job done. If we spot a dog with **** in its cage, one of us immediately go deal with the animal, whether we are with a customer or not. I am not sure what goes on at the other Pet Company stores, but the animals are our first priority at The Pet Company in Chattanooga. Each dog has its own crate. Very rarely do the animals share crates and if they do, there is a maximum of two dogs in a big crate. I encourage you all to not give up on this company because you have gone to one that was poorly managed. My manager, Carre R., is incredibly helpful and always willing to do what she has to in order to get the job done. She spends extra time with the animals to insure that all are properly handled and cared for. I encourage you all to visit The Pet Company in Chattanooga. You won't be disappointed.

We purchased a puppy in late October- early November of 2007. We where told that we would receive her papers in the mail within a month. After seven weeks we called, and the person who I talked to said that we would receive them from the AKC. I got in touch with the AKC, and they said that the Pet Company is the one who sends them. I called back to the Pet Company and asked to speak with the manager and told her this.
She told me that she was really busy and would check into it and give me a call back. I never received a call back. We gave it a few weeks, and I called back this morning and was told that they where backed up on sending out papers, call back in a few weeks. The cashier tried to get the manager, but she wouldn't talk to me. The employees are very rude and they are not helpful.

We never expected to buy a puppy at a pet store since we've heard all the horror stories, but we have been trying to adopt a child from Guatemala for 4 years and it's been horrible, so we had a weak moment. We went to this mall and saw the most lovable English Bulldog and fell in love. We cannot even believe how much we paid - $4560. They told us he could be used as a stud or show dog. He has five champions in his blood line. From the time we got him, he had diarrhea and vomiting. We took him to the vet multiple times and he was on medicine over and over. That finally got cleared up, but he's had red bumps all over his tummy, legs and face. They thought it could be food allergies. He went back and they did a skin scrape. He has demodectic mange. He is only 6 months-old and he's been on medicines his whole life. He has to have medicated baths twice a week for a month. They said this came from his mother at birth. These pet stores need to be SHUT DOWN! It's all about money. We will do what we have to in order to make him better as he's part of our family. But we will have him fixed. This is NOT champion quality that they sell.
We have spent over $600 on vet bills, medicines, etc. We will have to spend even more than that to get him fixed, IF he gets through this mange. His immune system is so low that it could even kill him. This little guy has known nothing but sickness for six months of his life.

I purchased a puggle from this store which had sores on her back. I was told that they were just kennel sores, sores from the dog scratching and a reaction to a vaccination. Three different answers. The pet company upon selling this dog said she was healthy and the sores would go away within a few weeks. They verbally agreed that they would pay for ANY charges concerning these sores. It has been a month and a half now and $500 in veterinary bills to treat these sores. The vet has wanted to do a biopsy because she has never seen these sores before and is extremely baffled. Another $300 in bills. She is a vet at another local Pet Company and said that the dog would never have been sold under her care because the dog is SICK.

I purchased and so called long haired chihuahua. I love my baby very much and would never give him back. I am now trying to dispute that he is purebread. They are giving me a hard time so i went and had a DNA test done at my vet and they are now saying it is not legitament. There is a large dog blood trait in his genes and they are saying that this can't possibly be his blood test. I spent $164 on it and have done everything they have told me to do and this is what i get.
When i was in the pet store they had at least 3 dogs per little cage. They did not have food or water. They finally brought out a bottle that hung from the cages that was pink liquid. all 3 dogs had to drink from the same little spout and they looked so hungry. their cages were dirty. They want me to pay $1900, for a pure bread and he is not even a pure bread.

I purchased a beagle puppy at Newport Mall in Jersey City, NJ. I was supposed to get reimbursed for a vet bill and 2 rounds of medicines needed for kennel cough. I went into the store and filled out the claim form and waited for my return. When I called back after 6 weeks they gave me the parent company's number in Morganville. I called and I spoke with a woman who told me they never received the claim or any of the documents I had photocopied at the store in Jersey City. She eventually had them fax over the information and I was told it would come in the mail. I still haven't received my refund.

We are family with two kids. Three weeks ago, we bought a puppy from the Pet Company Store in Danbury, CT for 1347.16. Few days later after the purchase our dog became sick. He couldn't breath. We brought him to the emergency room. On the next day doctor said that he has a very bad pneumonia. Boss (this is the dog's name) spent 5 days in the hospital (total cost is about 3000). Boss was released and we were glad that his is fine. However, yesterday he got very sick again. Today doctor told me that pneumonia is back. I paid another 1800 for 3 days in the hospital.
We signed a claim for The Pet Company and been told to wait 14 weeks for the result. I called to the store and told the representative that our dog is sick again. We don't have so much money to pay for all this hospital bills. The representative was nice in the beginning but than she said that it is our fault, that we didn't take a good care of our dog. She didn't want to give me any information or phone numbers of the manager or owner of the store.
I don't know what to do. I'm sure that they won't give us the money back. We spent almost 7000. The doctor said that Boss needs to be in the hospital for at least two more weeks and it's going to cost around 10000 more. However, his chances to survive are really poor. I don't have so much money. Even if they give us our money back, who's going to explain my kids that their puppy is going to die?

I went to the Hamilton Mall with my husband. we went in and it just broke my heart. Big dogs in small kennels and 2 small dogs in one kennel. How can the employees look at that all day? Anyway, I saw a Benise Mountain Dog, he was about 3 months old. I asked her how much he was and she said $2100. I was almost sick. It wasn't the price that made sick, it's the lack of care they give.
This dog was covered in it's own feces, his hair was matted, you could just tell they weren't taking care of him. I was like are you kidding me this dog probably has so many diseases. These animals don't deserve this.

On January 27, 2007, I purchased a Lhasa Apso puppy from a store on Marsh Avenue in Staten Island. Three days later, I had to take her to the vet because of her kennel cough. The vet certified she was unfit for sale. I was told the store will reimburse us for the treatment. Three months later, still no money although I was told it will take up to six weeks to process the claim. Now, all I'm getting is a run around.

Purchased a puppy on November 30th, 2006. Puppy was sick and we have taken him to the vet and were told by the Pet Company we would be reimbursed for vet bills. It is April 2007 and still no money. Made many calls to store and I’m getting a run around!

I purchase a dwarf bunny on April 6, 2007. I purchased the My First Home Kit as well. We took her home; put her in her new home. My husband woke up around 6:30 am and found the bunny dead. My 3-year-old is devasted.
I called the next morning and explained what had happened, and was told that yesterday was a stressful day for the bunnies, and they would replace it. I told her I do not want another bunny, I wanted I a full refund, and she said that is was not there policy to refund, she had to check with her manager, and would call me back. Needless to say I have not received a call back. My daughter is devasted.

I purchased a Lhasa Apso on 5/6/06 for more than $1600.00 from The Pet Company of Paramus NJ and specifically asked for a dog that was good for kids. I was told by their associate Nicole that the dog I picked would be great. I have since learned that Lhasa Apso's are not at all for kids and should not be around them.
My dog has attacked all the kids in my family on numerous occasions and have successfully bit my 6 year old daughter in the face which caused her to need stitches and she now have a complex about being seen in public not to mention the medical cost out of pocket. I’m so dissatisfied with the service I have received and more so upset that my daughter will now be scared for life.

We bought a golden retriever puppy from "The Pet Company" in Newport mall in Jersey City, N.J. They told us to take this puppy to their vet, which we did. Their vet said he had an upper respitory infection…"kennel cough", so she gave us medication for $50.00 that will be reimbursed, as are all related illnesses reimbursed by contract. Three days pass and he is sleeping 18 to 20 hours a day which seemed kind of odd even for a puppy, but on the third day he had trouble breathing and it scared me, so I took him right away back to their same vet. The vet tells me if you want your dog to live take him to a hospital right now, he has pneumonia.
I take him to the hospital and they tell me he has infectious pneumonia and they need to admit him right now. After several days they said there is nothing more they can do, and pretty much just asked for my permission to put him to sleep. Poor guy never had a chance. They said his lungs were just too far gone and that he already had full blown pneumonia before I even bought him.
They gave me the “unfit for sale” letter to take back to the store, and a bill for $5362.00, yes $5362.00, and my dog is dead. So I go back to the store and give them all the paperwork and they filed a claim and refunded the money for the purchase price of the dog and said they will evaluate the bill and contact me.
I have been given the cold shoulder for 3.5 months now. I’ve paid the $5362.00 out of my pocket for a dog they sold me that had pneumonia before I even bought it. This was an animal in which I fell in love with and they act like it’s a sweater or shirt!

On Friday, January 19, 2006 my husband and I went into The Pet Company in the Palisades Mall in West Nyack, NY to see the dogs. It was horrifying to see the condition that these animals were in. Some of them did not have any water available to them, and all of them were rolling in their own feces. These dogs are locked up in glass cages 24/7 unless a customer comes to take them out. Who wants to come and take them out when there covered in their own feces? When customers do take them out, they are so hyper from being caged up, nobody would want to buy them.
I tried to get an employee to help me, but they were all teenagers talking amongst themselves about what they were doing that night. They paid no attention to the customers or to the animals that lay in filth. My husband was so disgusted that he went and sat outside the store. After reading the horror stories on this website, I would never purchase an animal from this company. Where are the managers and supervisors?

I purchased a dog that was on sale at the mall the first week in Sept 2007. The Pet Co. employee told us the dog had a broken leg months prior. The puppy was healed, and the vet released it for sale. The next morning I was in the emergency room with the dog, seems her leg was broke. I paid the $300.00 and had her fixed. The doctor also recommended surgery to set the leg or she would walk with a limp.
The next day I went back to the mall with all the doctors’ notes, etc. I wanted to keep the dog. I felt they should cover her surgery because the poor dog had suffered enough. I took the dog to 3 different vets for opinions and all came out the same, recommending "surgery".
The Pet Co. gave me no straight answers. For 2 days I was run in circles by what seemed like 18 Y.O. managers. Then finally a 25 y.o. manager from the New Jersey store called and said she would take the dog to the stores vet in NJ to have the surgery done. That would be the only way the Company would cover the cost. She then told me that I would have to return the dog to them for a refund first so the store would cover it, then after they fix the leg they would adopt her back to me since she was unfit for sale.
The next week I get a call that the dog is back and I can come take her. I go get the dog and the women says "Oh my vet says she is fine". The cast the emergency room put on her (& I paid for) is fine so they did NOTHING.
She then tells me that the "dog knocked over a water dish with her cast and its wet, but I tried to use my blow dryer to dry it off and it seems ok." However, it was still wet on the inside, so I had to take the dog and have another cast put on for $100.00. Every time I stop by or call the mall store they tell me to call corporate. I called corporate and the first few times they told me it’s approved and the checks in the mail soon. Now I just get voice mailbox and they never return my calls.

Kimberly told us before the purchase that we could set up an account and have low interest free payments for 6 months. So, I was like sign me up. I get the bill after 2-3 weeks and there is no such items listed (21% interest). So , I call their home office / customer service line to complain. They said they would call the store to see if they have a 6 month plan. They call me back after 2 days and tell me that there is no such plan. I should have known better because their home office would have known what the local stores are doing to market their pets
Then, I ask to pay off the balance ($642) with my credit card (7.5% interest). They only accept checks. So, I call my credit card company and explain to them what has transpired. They are going to send a check to them to pay off invoice and bill me the $642. This whole situation got out of hand when the employee was improperly trained.

I purchased a puppy at this location and was completely ready to pay completely out of pocket. The sales rep. explained to me that I could put the puppy on a Pet Company charge card and I would have 0% interest for the first year. When I get the 2ND bill I am being charged over 40 dollars a month in interest. There is no paper work provided to me to tell me about this. Also, the puppy was not available on the date I was told I could pick him up. I waited all day and was told by the manager, Samantha, that it was because the vet had not given the puppy an ok to go home.
She has me call the vet (apparently there are problems between the Pet Company and their curren vet Dr. Kay) and explain I need to pick up the puppy. They explain to me that the communication between the store and the vet has not been great and that it would be ANOTHER WEEK before I could pick up the puppy. Needless to say, I am not pleased. When the manager talks to the vet's receptionist she refers to me as "the jackass" she talked to earlier.
So now the manager is loving this and thinks that I am the key to them cutting ties with their vet or something like that, and all I want is the puppy I had purchased. Many other people were there throughout the day to pick up puppies as well. Also, I purchased the lifetime warranty for the life of the puppy. Sure enough, the puppy had kennel cough and I needed to take him to the vet and get him medications. I turned in my paperwork to receive compensation and have yet to hear anything from the company. Everything they promised me to sell me the puppy has been a lie. I feel very foolish.

I purchased a Boston terrier on January 11, 2006. I paid $990.00 for her. Me and my wife happened to be at Arbor Place Mall and we stopped by the Pet Company when we went in they were not letting anyone hold or visit with the animals. We thought this was strange because usually they let you pet and visit with the animals. A day or two later my wife happened to run into a lady that works for the vet she told us that there was a virus that was going around and that due to us getting our puppy from the Pet Company we needed to bring her in and get her checked out to make sure she didn't have this.
That same weekend I took her to the vet that the Pet Company uses. She was tested and it was positive that she had guardia they gave us an over-the-counter de-wormer medicine. They said we needed to give this to her for the next three days. And in three weeks bring her back to be re-tested. I gave our dog the medicine she vomited once she started taking this medication. We completed all three days of doses.
On Monday, May 22, 2006 our dog passed away. My wife had put her on the back porch for one hour when she came outside to bring our dog in the house my wife found our dog deceased. Her nose was bleeding .
My wife called the vet they told her she could pay out of pocket for an atopasy to find out cause of death and told her that she would need to contact the Pet Company and see what kind of policy we had on her. My wife called the Pet Company and talked to the district manager their in Douglasville. She told my wife that we didn't purchase the extended warranty and that there was nothing they could do unless, we could prove that she had a hereditary disease or cancer that could be proven before we had purchased her from them at The Pet Company.

I bought a 2-month-old baby rabbit on Sunday 3/5/06.The bunny got very ill on Tuesday morning I took her to the vet. There was a liquid for diarrhea that the store clerk from the pet company recommended for me to give the rabbit. He did not mention that the bunny was sick. I came out my pocket 65 dollars for the vet bill. The bunny died Tuesday night.

Every time I go in there I am appalled. Not only me but other people in there as well. They put new arrivals in cages with nothing to lay on .These are tiny puppies that weigh only maybe 5 lbs.Thay have to lay on hard cages with NOTHING underneath them not even a foam rubber pad like I see in other pet stores. This is just plain cruel and mean. The puppies lay in the corner shaking, scared, cold and uncomfortable. If something is not done, and I mean soon, I am contacting my local T.V.stations, the attorney general and my local newspapers as well.

I was in the store with my wife on February 2, 2006. We saw a Silky Terrier (born 9/27/06) lying in the cage with labored breathing. The dog had his head lying in feces and was unresponsive. There was a sign on the cage that said $200 OFF. We wanted to buy the dog to save it from the store but we couldn't get anyone to help us. We tried to get someone to help us but the store was crowded and of the two people working there, one was on the phone the entire time we were there and the other person was working on the register and couldn't help us. I had to leave to go to work so we couldn't wait any longer.
I called the store today and finally got through after 45 minutes of busy signals. The girl who answered the phone said she could not tell me about the dog on the phone even though I was 70 miles away. This is a terrble place. The animals are kept in awful conditions. Their coats are all matted and a great many of them appear ill.

I purchased a 4-month-old Pomeranian from the Pet Company in the Freehold Mall. I had the puppy for 5 days, on the fifth day she appeared to have a seizure and died instantly. I brought the puppy to a vet immediately but it was too late. I then contacted the Pet Company and they wanted paperwork form the vet stating what had happened to the puppy. The vet agreed and supplied me with paperwork that stated that the dog appeared to have no physical signs of abuse. The Pet Company refunded the $1,500 that I paid for the puppy but I am still very upset that this occurred.

They knowingly sold me a sick dog. She had kennel cough and they gave her a cough suppressant while we were purchasing her. It developed into bronchitis. She was in and out of vet's office a lot. They said they would cover any costs and have not. It took two months of steady antibotics to make her well, She still suffers from a hacking cough.

My husband & I have gone into this store several times with the intention to rescue a pet. We have a dog and a cat at home right now but would like another. Today was the fourth time we've gone in there & the dogs were eating their own feces. I went to find a worker & one of the girls said that today was her 1st day & she couldn't help. I had to explain to her what feces was. One lady was letting a customer play with a pet, & the manager was on the phone.
I stood at the counter for 5 mins. before the manager acknowledged me. When I told her that the pug had devoured his feces she immediately went on the defensive. She said she was there by herself & when I pointed to the 2 other workers she said that they had just gotten there. She said that she was doing the best that she could. I told her that in this store the pets should come before the customers. She didn't seem to agree with me. I went back about 5 mins. later & she was finally cleaning the cages. Although, she did a poor job because she took out the grates but left the urine & feces underneath. She didn't bother to clean any of it.
My husband was trying to get another dogs attention because the dog was attempting to eat his also. The manager just left the door to his cage open so he could get to what had fallen below the grate. This is repulsive. Not only for the starving animals but also for the customers. If I could rescue all of them I would but it breaks my heart to see these animals in this environment. Something MUST be done!

Upon stopping into one of their locations, I discovered the most obscene disregard and maltreatment I have ever seen. Several puppies closed up together in a cage smaller than the one my pet rabbit lives in. Other puppies lay in their feces. Cats piled on one another in small barred cages. They might as well call their store The Pet Jail. I've seen shelters and pounds much cleaner than this store. There's just no excuse for this kind of animal abuse and neglect. The people who buy from them contribute to this on-going trend in objectifying animals. I couldn't with any conscience spend a cent in an environment like the Pet Company. I walked right out in utter disgust.

Our family was looking to purchase a pedigree Bichon Frise female puppy and went to the Pet Store in Bayshore, NY. After speaking to the store manager for over an hour, we felt that the manager was well informed and provided original proof of origin for the puppy so we decided to go ahead and make the purchase. We opened our hearts and our home and welcomed in Shasta to our lives. They provided a bill of health from their vet stating she was fit for sale, along with check list of the things that they did to Shasta before releasing her to us. They told us that Shasta had a slight fever because of all the excitement.
The next day, we took her to our vet to make sure she was OK. Well, this slight fever was not from excitement but from a severe bilateral ear infection caused by a yeast infection and that our Pedigree Bichon Frise did not meet breed standards. That means that I paid over $1400.00 for a mixed breed. I felt so violated because I was sure that the Pet Company truly cared about their pets and their clients. When I went back to question why they sold me a mix breed who was sick, they told me that being that I purchased a Peace of Mind contract, that I could return Shasta and get my money back.
The snotty 18 year old behind the counter, insisted that she knew what a pedigree looked like and doubted the vets claim! I could not believer her audacity to question an experienced, professional vet and I insisted to speak with the manager, but was told she was out, but if I wanted to, I could leave my name and number and someone would return my call. I returned my Shasta, had to comfort my broken-hearted children, and still have yet to speak with anyone from the Pet Company. I am completely appalled on how they handled this situation.

I purchased a black female schnauzer from the Pet Company in Douglasville, GA. I took it to the vet the day after I purchased her and found she had multiple hernias. My husband felt so sorry for her he did not want to take her back.....now we will have to go through the process of trying to get reimbursed for our medical cost...and I am not looking forward to it. I went in and ask the manager about her registation papers and was told they could be as long as 120 days before we receive them -- well I purchased her in January and it is May and still no papers. I went in to ask the manager about her papers and got nowhere -- I was told that if I did not leave the store security would be called. I believe this company makes a habit of selling dogs who are ill or which have genetic problems ... mine does.
We spent $1200 for this dog and have no papers for her and will have medical bills to boot....

My husband and I purchased what looked like a healthy Cocker Spaniel in 2003 from The Pet Company in Edison, New Jersey ($1200). After just a couple days, we realized that she wasn't able to do the normal playful things a puppy should be able to do. We couldn't pick her up without her crying; she couldn't sit or lay down without crying...she couldn't really do anything. I obviously knew something wasn't right, so we took her to the vet immediately.
When the vet asked where we purchased her, they couldn't believe that The Pet Company was still open. We didn't even have to explain to them what was wrong with her because they could see it right away when she sat down (they explained they have never seen a dog sit so oddly- with her hip bones sticking out). Immediately, they suggested we get x-rays done…$500 later, we found out that our new 3 month old puppy had hip dysplasia in both hips (basically, they said her hips were non-existent).
They suggested I immediately call The Pet Company and let them know that there was NO WAY a vet could have checked her out and said she was healthy. I explained her diagnosis and all they could say, was either return her (by that time, we were so attached to her) or we had to prove to them that it was a hereditary problem. If so, they would give us back 2X what I paid for her (NJ State Law). Even then, it wouldn’t cover the cost of her surgeries, but it was better than nothing.
Even though, it was going to cost my husband and me $1800 a hip, we knew there was no other answer (she was just in too much pain). In July, we took her to the Tinton Falls Animal Hospital in New Jersey for her first hip surgery (they can't do both at the same time). After a long recovery and getting numerous documents from the vet, the hospital, her trainer, etc., we are still fighting to get our money back (almost 2 years later). This coming summer (2005) she is getting her other hip done and we're going to have to go through this all over again.
Even though, our Cocker Spaniel will never be able to do the normal things a dog could do, we wouldn't trade her for the world. I just wish she didn't have to go through this much pain EVERYDAY for the rest of her life! I actually went to the store yesterday and almost got kicked out for letting EVERYONE know what kind of dogs they sell. I suggest to anyone thinking about buying a puppy…don’t buy it from a pet store…go to a reputable breeder. Do your research first! Be smart!

I went into the store to look at the puppies. I don't like the idea of having them in those cages, but the conditions were awful. They had all kinds of different breeds crammed into the same cage. Some cages were completely empty - no water, no food. One thing that shocked me the most was the store had not provided any sort of chew toys. There were 2 different breeds of terriers in stark empty cages, running around desperately looking for something to chew, gnawing at the corners of the glass, the hinges and the lock on the cage. I asked the person working if I bought chew toys for these puppies, would he put them in the cage and he flatly replied no. I got the managers name and left the store in tears.

I purchased a puppy December 23, 2004. Total Cost: 1303.78, On December 27th, the puppy started vomiting and had diarrhea, I took him immediately to the vet, and he was sent home with medicine. The next day he showed no improvement, so I took him back to the vet, he needed to stay, since he lost so much fluid with both vomiting and diarrhea. At any rate, Benny did not make it, and after close to a week of being treated with fluids and antibotics, Benny passed away.
In the interim, I had called the pet store to see if any other puppies had the same symtoms, and the manager Tiffany, who claimed to also be a veterinarian, said that she had some puppies suffering from toxsemia. My vet ruled this out and said Benny had a viral disease that basically he did not have proper immunization from his mother to combat. When I purchased Benny, a lady was there with her little blonde boy around 5 years of age, speaking to the manager Tiffany, asking her how she was going to explain to her son, if anything happen to the puppy she purchased, I thought nothing of it, and I was already so in love with Benny, that I thought this must be an isolated incident.
At any rate, I ended up with a $1,500 vet bill. I went to the store, and Tiffany said I need to file a claim for both the cost of the puppy and the vet bills. I refused to leave the store until I got the cost of the puppy credited to my account, because as I told Tiffany, I was not going to be out $3,000 in a matter of days. In addition to the heartache, they were not going to keep my money. It took a week, and many calls to her claim office to get Michelle to authorize a refund for the puppy. Michelle said it would take another week or so to process the vet bills. At the beginning of Feb, after hearing nothing from Michelle, I called the claim office, after leaving several messages for Michelle, who never returned my call, I called Tiffany the manager. She got a hold of Michelle, who said the claim was approved and they would also give me a credit for a new puppy. I told her I was not interested in obtaining a new puppy, I just need to get reimbursed since I paid my vet using my credit card, and now have paid my credit card in full.
She said the check would go out the following week, Now February is come to an end, and Michelle does not return any of my calls, including a fax I sent asking her to call. I need help, because I have a bad feeling about this company and feel they are not going to honor their promise.

My wife thought she'd surprise me by buying a puppy. She went to the Pet Company in the Freehold Mall and fell in love with a 3-month old silky terrier puppy. She purchased all the warranties and even put it on their credit card (which she opened that day). Having never owned a silky, I did some research the next day and found out that they charged her twice the amount that a breeder charges for the same dog. To top it off, the dog has severe kennel cough and our vet (whom we have been using for many years) deemed her unfit for sale. The company's response was to tell us to return the dog.
As dog lovers, we became instantly attached to this puppy and can't even begin to fathom returning her to store that didn't care for her properly. We submitted her vet bills as part of the piece of mind warranty, but have yet to hear anything. We were also given pedigree papers showing her breeder and lineage. The breeder will be contacted and informed of the horrible care their puppies are getting. How can a pet store justify a 100% mark-up on a sick animal? These practices must be stopped. They prey on people's soft side for animals (like my wife's) knowing fully that the vast majority of people will not return a puppy.

Approximately two weeks prior to Christmas '04, I visited The Pet Company Wilton Mall Space D-1 Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 and asked to hold a mini schnauzer as I was considering purchasing the puppy for my 11 & 12 yr old children for Christmas. The puppy coughed twice during the visit and I brought it to the attention of the young girl working there. She assured me that the puppy was being seen by a vet and that, to her knowledge the dog was not sick but she would mention it to the vet when he came in that week.
On Dec. 24, 2004 I went to the same store and made the decision to purchase the same dog if it was in good health. I was assured that the dog was fit for sale and that sometimes the dogs at the stores are placed on preventative antibiotics because they are around so many other dogs. I purchased the dog for $1132.38, signed all the necessary paperwork, bought supplies in the amount of $55.83 and took the puppy home to give to my children for Christmas. I then scheduled a routine visit with my Vet to have the dog seen with in two weeks of purchase, as mandated by The Pet Company for warranty purposes but after the first week became suspicious that the dog may in fact be sick as I began to notice discharge from his nose and eyes. I called my Vet back and she agreed to see the dog sooner.
Her initial diagnosis on 1/3/05 was moderate to sever upper respiratory infection (which eventually progressed to pneumonia.) She also noted green bilateral nasal discharge, ocular discharge & obvious lethargy. She drew blood and placed the dog on antibiotics. That night the dog stopped eating and drinking so again I called my Vet as she had requested if his condition worsened. She told me to come in and she subsequently sent me home with some high caloric food and gave me instructions to give the puppy watered by a syringe and ice cubes to keep him hydrated. It was a courtesy visit and I was only charged for the food.
The condition of the dog did not improve and he was seen again on Jan. 6, 2004 at which time the Vet. took x-rays of the dogs chest to find a consolidated lung field. Sent me with more high caloric food and changed his antibiotics as she felt that he may be resistant to the other antibiotic. Over the next 10 days the dog appeared to be improving but upon completion of his course of antibiotics, after two days, his symptoms reoccurred and he again began coughing and stopped eating. I called the Vet. and was told to continue with the antibiotics at which time I obtained the medication and began administering it as prescribed.
On Jan. 20, 2005 the dog was taken to the Vet for a follow-up visit and I was told to continue with more antibiotics. The dog did not improve and was unable to lay down as he could not breathe unless he was in the sitting position and on Jan. 26, 2005 I received a call from my Vet advising me to take the dog to a Vet who specialized in treating animals with this problem. Upon examination, the specialist admitted the dog for treatment of severe bilateral pneumonia. He remained hospitalized until Jan. 29, 2005. He currently remains on antibiotics and has not yet completed the course as it is prescribed of 30 days. I am told that his respiratory effort is still not normal and his lungs may be scarred permanently. This may be a recurring problem and he may face surgery in the future to remove the affected portion of his lung.
I purchased the dog for $1132.38 and to date I have spent $2270.08 in medical expenses. I additionally spent $55.83 for food and supplies.

We purchased a puppy from their Colonie, NY store. Within a few days he was deemed unfit for sale, and thought to have kennel cough. After several visits to the vet and 3 courses on meds, he was given a chest x-ray that found pneumonia and a lung collapse. This company gave me a different story EVERY day. They finally told us to surrender the dog or we would be cut off financially.
We were heartbroken, but told by the vet that he would always be a chronically ill dog. We gave him back, and never were told what happened to our Logan. I am told now that he was most likely fixed up enough for sale, and then re-sold to another poor person. We filed a complaint with the NYS Attorney General's office, and upon doing so, received a check within a few days of all of our money of vet bills, AND our purchase price.

My son paid $500.00 down on a dog on November 28th 2004. He was supposed to pick up the dog on December 3, 2004. He killed himself on December 2, 2004. He asked in a hand-written will that I get the down payment back on the dog. The Pet Company has gotten all the information and has refused to refund any or all of the down payment. This was not a deposit to hold the dog it was half the cost of the dog. And to date February 1st, 2005, they still have not done anything. I have called repeatedly.. sent them a copy of will, his bill and such.
The girl at the pet store has gone so far to tell my son's girl friend she can still have the dog but would have to pay full price for it. This is outrageous! Totally insensitive and they have 500.00 on a dog that they can re-sell.
The emotional damage is great. The fact that they refuse to pay back any of the money that my 18 year old son paid is not a good business practice. He had till the 3rd to pick up the dog and would have if possible!

The first week of Dec. 2004, I was informed there was a bull terrier at the Colonie Mall in Albany N.Y. I went to see him and he looked awful. A white boy with red skin under his fur that looked like cotton. He had brown on him from his own feces. I told the manager he had allergies. Manager said nothing. I visited him a few more times and he was always dirty. No toys or blanket either.
The price on the bullie was 2700 and I asked if the price goes down. They said yes. In between my visits the bullie was moved to the Wilton Mall in Saratoga, N.Y. He was never put on display and I was told he had mange. I was given the runaround when I wanted to buy the dog. They said he was not for sale. The manager was very rude at the Wilton Mall. Finally I was told this week he was given away or adopted out? Take your pick. I am very upset. Having a bullie terrier myself I know the care and food they need to help with allergies and stress. I was not offered the dog to adopt. Was he put to sleep? They do not care about thier animals. I even left them info. about bull terriers which they threw out.

I purchased a two month-old Pomeranian for $1095. At the time of the transaction I was told that I needed to take him to the vet within fourteen days and if there was anything wrong with him, or if he required treatment, I would be reimbursed for my expenses. I took him to the vet and he was diagnosed with Kennel Cough. He had to hospitalized and nebulized for three days for a total cost of $300. I went back to the Pet Company for reimbursement and was told I would receive my money in two weeks. That was in November. I still have not been reimbursed.

I had purchased a pure breed west highland terrier from this store back in early Sept. of this year. As soon as I brought the puppy home he was sick. He came down with a severe case of Kennel Cough that just wouldn't go away until the end of October. The dog was 1200 dollars and with that I also purchased the peace of mind warranty and activated the chip in his ear ( supposently). After spending over 200.00 dollars out of my own pocket I have still yet to have been reimbursed for these bills.
Now my dog is almost 5 months old and has developed a lump under his skin which when I had brought it to the vet's attention and they had told me that if it does not clear up it might be a tumor! On top of all this, my puppy's testes had not descended yet which I had come to find is also a huge problem. Now my puppy more than likely will not be able to reproduce and if I do not have the testes removed for $380.00, then they will more than likely become cancerous. I love this dog however what I do not appreciate is the fact that I am not getting compensated for any of these issues as of yet.

Around August of this year, 2004, my daughter and I were walking around the mall when we discovered The Pet Company...a new pet store that had just opened that sells live animals. My daughter fell in love with one of their puppies, a japanese chin, and asked if we could bring him home. I was a little reluctant at first since we already had a young dog at home...but decided the he could use a companion and after talking to the sales girl (which I later found out was the store manager) about their return policy I decided that I would take a chance and see if this new puppy would fit in with our family. The store manager assured me that if things didn't work out and if my existing dog didn't get along with the one from the pet company..they would take him back and refund all of my money..no questions asked.
Well, a few days later when I tried to return the puppy I was told that The Pet Company doesn't accept returns and that I would have to keep the dog. I tried numerous times to make this return since my original dog was beating up the new dog and was given the run around by the manager of this store. Her story changed several times about the return policy and she finally said that she would have to talk to her district manager. I tried to get the name of this district manager but was told that he does not speak with customers!
Finally after a few weeks I was able to return the dog and was granted all but 20% of the cost of the animal...I was never told that there would be a 20% penalty (processing fee) when I originally made this purchase.
