Another burned up Whirlpool refrigerator.

Our daughter woke us up early one morning complaining that the house smelled of smoke. It took awhile, but we figured out that the fridge was the source of the problem. We unplugged it and called repair. Repairman found the "start device" (device that powers on the compressor) was fried and that the terminals melted off the compressor, the wiring melted and the insulation scorched. The fridge was bought in December of 2003.

Called Whirlpool. They claim they have no issues on something like this. Informed them that Maytag has done a recall for this problem. That they knew about and were quick to point out that the recall were for refrigerators produced prior to Whirlpool acquiring Maytag.

They were kind enough to offer us a 15% reduction on our next refrigerator if and only if we purchased a whirlpool, jenn air, maytag, kitchen aid or ammana.

We had a good laugh at that as why would anyone buy a refrigerator from Whrilpool after it fried itself less than 7 years into its life?

Repariman bill was 100 just for the visit and the cost of a new (not Whirlpool) refrigerator. There appears to be enough people having this problem so why can't something be done?

Jim of Amarillo, TX June 15, 2009

Have had a new Whirlpool refrig ED5HVEXVB01 less than 1 year. This morning I discover it was not cooling in the refrig. or freezer unit. Was refered to a repairman that contracts to Whirlpool. He determined that the compressor was bad. Said he would have to take it to the shop, order replacement compressor and make repair. May takeup to a week. Whirlpool said tough luck no assistance on lst food loss or anything else. I have other Whirlpool appliances. I won't have any more. Borders on the sham cheat way of doing business!

Art of Bel Air, MD June 14, 2009

After just less than 6 and 1/2 years of service, our Whirlpool Refrigerator burned out a relay causing the breaker in the house to trip and damaging the compressor. I called Whirlpool and asked them who did they recommend to service the refrigerator. The gave me the name of A&E repair. I called them and they came out. The repairman came out on a Saturday and determined that I needed a new relay and compressor and it would cost 700. He called Whirlpool and their customer service said that there was nothing that they could do, but he gave me a number of someone else within Whirlpool who might help. On Monday I called Whirlpool and was told that there is nothing that they could do, specifically since I had already had the work done, as if people could wait around for Whirlpool to make a decision or if anyone even knew that that was their policy.

Anyway, when I asked to talk to someone higher up I got that their system was down and he couldn't connect me to anyone and to try back tomorrow, which I did. The next day a woman gave me the same answer as the guy the day before, there was nothing that they could do because I already had the work done. She however refused to connect me to anyone else. Next I emailed Whirlpool directly. They returned my email saying that someone would contact me and they did and I got the same answer. This is a defect in Whirlpools parts.

I originally bought this refrigerator because I had an 18 year old refrigerator and I was afraid that it would go up before a big party. Today, that 6 1/2 year refrigerator went up, but my now 24 year old Sears refrigerator is still in service, working great. Apparently the internet is filled with people with this same problem.

After 1 year, the small plastic piece holding the pin for the ice dispenser door broke. This happened 1 week after warranty expiration. The piece was broke sooner, but finally came off. This is poor quality for something so important. Other than the freezer is thawing because the flap is open and cool air is escaping from the unit.

I have all Whirlpool Gold Appliances in my home that were brand new in 2004 when I moved in. One by one they are breaking down. None of the appliances get alot of use. My side by side refrigerator lights started making sizzling noises and then burnt out. I cannot put any bulbs in as they continue to sizzle. Now I have a very dark refrigerator with no lighting. The next issue is my over the range/hood microwave that stop working completely that I had to replace. Next, my calypso washer is leaking lots of water from underneath the machine. It's probably not worth fixing I am told. Probably cheaper to buy a new one.

I have spent alot of money on my home and appliances. My parents have had appliances that have lasted more than 30 years! It is a shame how the manufacturers are getting away with the price they are charging & the appliances only lasting 2-4 years. That should be against the law. Maybe they should start making disposable appliances, because that's what they are now. I am outraged about whirlpool not standing behind their products & the complaints I have read.

Whirpool Model GS6SHAXLL03 Serial number SP1529528 purchased June 07, 2003 from HH Greg for 1,943.97 Five year (5) warranty was included in the purchase price. The compressor relay switch tripped our breaker. We had an electrical burnt smell, and puddle of water in front of refrigerator the next day.

Ron of Uniontown, PA May 31, 2009

Our refrigerator broke down, in the process of finding out the problem, we found a recall. In finding this out we called about the recall, we spoke to someone at Whirlpool instructing us to send receipt for part that was fixed and a list of items we lost, I faxed a copy of my credit card statement (which we used to pay for the part) and a list of lost items, then received a call stating that the information was incomplete and that nothing would be done. "Your refrigerator is to old"

Let me tell you something the recall states that the refrigerator could have caused a fire, and we could have lost a lot more than just the food in it. We could have lost everything we have and our lives. I feel, weather it makes a difference or not, the person we talk to should have helped us resolve the problem instead of blowing of off in the most nasty way as possible.

Carolyn of Ellijay, GA May 28, 2009

Oh, my lord, now I'm really scared. I've read all the problems with the Whirlpool fridge and the fire stuff is really disturbing. I'm mad because my almost 2-year old side by side is having icemaker problems, sticking flap on door dispenser causing lots of frost buildup and in general not working.

Repairman just left after 50 service call to inform me that I needed the "repair kit" that Whirlpool has apparently had to make for this specific problem. It will cost around 75 plus another service call plus labor, around 150. I'm livid.

I also have that noisy problem in the water lines to icemaker. Just learned to live with that, but now I'm dejected over the possibility of fire, lots of parts and labor costs, no bailout or even concern from Whirlpool. Gee, I only want a simple life and a simple fridge like my Mom's. It was 40 plus and still going strong when my mother died.

Gotta run and see if I can teach my cats to dial 911 if I'm not here when the fridge ignites.

Norma of Wichita Falls, TX May 26, 2009

I bought a Whirlpool referator the last of December and also bought the extended warrent with it. I called Lowe's because it is making a knocking noise. They sent Mr Bob's appliance repair man out. He came out three or four times and it still makes a loud noise. So we called Whirpool. And they said they had to have a second a opinion. So they had us call Hamilton Appliance repair man come out. He has benn here four or five time at least.

I called last week and ask him to call Whirlpool and find out what we was going to do about this noise. We called Whirlpool again and they said that the repaire man would have to call and say they could't fix it before they would replace it. I called Hamilton's this morning to see what was going on with it. I was told Whirlpool told him to order another part. How long is this going to go on? How many parts can they replace on a new ref?

I bought a Whirlpool dishwasher and a new stove at the same time and I am not having a problem with them. I feel after this many service call on a new referator that Whirlpool should replace this one. When peple come to my house and hears my ref. They think I am crazy for putting up with it. I would Like to know what is really going on. Will I have to have a repair man come every week un til my extender warranty run out?

Fay of Concord, OH May 19, 2009

We purchased our Whirlpool refrigerator model # ED5JHAXTLO1 on 10/07 but had them in storeage until 4/08. We used the refrigerator for about 6 months then went to Flordia for m6 months. We came backin April of 09and used the frige until today. The ice dispenser shut off valve aparently is faulty and water went on our hardwood floor. Water on wood no good!

We would like a little help in paying for this repair since we think it should not be defective at this early in it's life expectancy. We realize the warrenty is over but we thought Whirlpool would help. We really like the refrigerator. It is the best one we have ever owned and we have owned a few in 56 years. Thanks for any help you can provide .
