Kayak Responds

Judy of Hoffman Estates IL (6/30/03):
Purchased a new pool liner in 1999 with a 15-yr warranty. The liner ripped at the seam which should have been covered and they came up with every excuse in the book, even dry rot. I don't think so, not in Illinois. It has cost me $1,000.00 to order a new pool liner and has been hell trying to find someone who would install it because it was a Kayak. Apparently they have the pool liner market tied up as they are the only source for a liner to fit their pool.

Vonnie of Kailua-kona HI (4/23/03):
Less than one year ago, we purchased a Kayak Pool. They came over and set it all up, went over the warranties with us, including a 30 year warranty on the pool liner. Well it is now leaking and we cannot get anyone to return our calls, answer our e-mails or help in any way.

The pool company we purchased it from is no longer in business. They were selling Kayak pools and were unable to get the reservoir and Bac Pac Chlorine system shipped to Hawaii. So in essence, we were sold a swimming pool knowing that after the one year time period, we are not going to be able to purchase chemicals for the upkeep. They were actually hiding the chemicals in the crate that the pool was being shipped from Kayak Pools in New York to Hawaii, and then coming over and setting it up with a year supply.

The actual sales representatives from New York came over to guarantee their product told us how wonderful and how happy his customers were with their Kayak pool. There is a new Kayak Distributor in Honolulu which we have called, he is selling Kayak pools and he cannot get chemicals nor is he sure how to back up the warranty. So we have a 30 warranty on a liner, with a leak and Kayak Pools will not give us any help, as they advertise in their package and we have only a few months supply of the Frog pool Care Chlorine System, which was one of the things that sold us. So now what do we do?

We live right on a main road where people stop a few times a month asking about the pool - it looks really nice but too bad they cannot back up their products. We have a pool that we cannot use, unless we add four inches a day to keep the pump running so it will not burn up the motor or drain it and let the $19,654.00 that we paid for it including the extra decking just sit there to waste away.

Kathy of Alsip IL (6/20/02):
When we purchased our Kayak pool in 1989 we were told that the walls were warrantied for life. We paid $12,500 for our pool and were deeply disappointed and frustrated when Kayak went out of business shortly after our purchase. Now doing business under a new name seems like an outrage to us since we are in need of new waterwalls and they are not guaranteeing them. Purchasing new walls will cost us $2000 plus we will need a new liner which will add another $1000. These costs do not include time and labor to install.

Erin of Plaistow NH (6/4/02):
Purchased 16 X 32 pool in 2001, Kayak installed the pool and after the (very Mild) winter the liner had become disconnected. We called for a service call under warranty. We were told there was a crew about 20 minutes from our house and that they would be by (5/18) They came and fixed the pool in about 10 minutes. After they left I got a call saying that there was a $200 service charge that was never mentioned.

They called and demanded $200 - we were never quoted a price, given an invoice or asked to sign that they even came to the house. Then they called and said if we didn't pay our warranty wasn't valid. This pool was $20,000 and we were told upon purchase that it was fully guaranteed.

Sunny of Midlothian, IL, writes:
My parents purchased a Kayak pool in 1994. At that time they were told that the pool had a lifetime guarantee on the walls and liner. Well, about five years after purchasing the pool Kayak Pools went bankrupt - but they are now again operating under the Kayak name.

The pool now needs new walls and a new liner all amounting to about $3,000 worth of work. My parents paid $15,000 for this pool 16 years ago and they are now retired in Florida. We still own the house here in Illinois where the pool is but can't afford the repairs. When Kayak was notified we were told that the original warranty that came with the pool was no longer valid since the company had gone bankrupt and are under new ownership, though they are still using the Kayak name.

Is there anything we can do about this?

Jama of Murphysboro, IL, writes:
When our Kayak Pool was purchased in 1986, the waterwalls came with a lifetime warranty. Now they have come out with the NEW Kayak Waterwalls. A couple of our original waterwalls are bulging and need to be replaced, but our lifetime warranty is no longer valid, because of the NEW Kayak Waterwalls.

Can this be fair? Lifetime means lifetime, not when the company decides to end it. We are very upset and disappointed. When you purchase something with a lifetime warranty on it, you feel secure and safe with your purchase, now I know this is not the case with Kayak Pools.

S.S. of Tazewell, TN:
I purchased a Kayak Pool in 1986. When I purchased this pool they explained to me al these warranties it had with it. One of them being a 15-yr warranty on the liner that came with the pool.

They said the liner couldn't in anyway be torn or ripped...if so then they would replace it, They even performed a little demonstration with a screw driver trying to make a hole in it and all that.

Well a few years ago the liner developed a
hole in it on the bottom. Well I called them to tell them what happened. They sent someone out to look at it. The guy they sent automatically said it was something we had done and it seemed as if there was no changing his mind. (and there wasn't)

So they said they would not replace it.

What gets me with this is that when they told us about the liner they said no matter
how it got torn it would be replaced because it wasn't suppose to tear.

Even in the hand books and all the papers I got with it thats what they said also. So needless to say I never got the liner replaced. So now we have a pool that just sits there that we can't use. I have tried to resolve this problem but they won't even talk about it.

I think that's awful when people do not honor their warranties!I would really like it if they would just replace the liner like they were supposed to in the first place.

Cynthia of Union Bridge, MD:
I've had a similar experience to the one given by S.S. of Tazewell, TN. I know that after 13 years I need a new liner, however, the lifetime warranty walls are failing. Because the original company went out of business, I will be stuck replacing these myself at my own expense. What are other Kayak owners doing? I bought mine in 1987.

The economic damages are that I will have to finance replacement of the walls myself. But the bigger cost will be the labor to get them installed. I am also finding it difficult to get anyone out to help me.

Shari of Webberville, MI:
My pool was put in in late August of 1997 so it was closed for the winter. We used it two years and this year one of the retaining walls is bowing out and when I called for service I was told the wall was covered but the service for this would be $150.00 and they didn't know if they would be able to reuse the liner.

I asked her to go ahead and set up service. A week later I called again and she told me again that it would be $150.00 for a service call but still I haven't heard anything from them with a pool that cost over $15,000.00 you would think you could use it more then two years and that you could get service when needed.

I feel Kayak does not live up to their warranties. Is there anything I can do to make them honor their warranty? We are not able to use our pool because the movement in the pool makes the wall bow out even more and the liner won't be able to hold up if the wall blows out then whos responsible for the liner if that happens? I couldn't get an answer on that either.
