GE, Kenmore Recall Microwave Combo Wall Ovens

Robin of Richardson TX (06/21/06)
My GE JE1640 microwave has malfunctioned for absolutely no reason. It turns on when you push the door release...thus exposing the family to microwaves. This unit should be taken off the market! It is a danger.

I have been exposed to microwaves as well as my husband.

Microwave failed to turn off while using the baked potato sensor setting for 2 large baking sized potatoes. Thick black smoke filled our home setting off our security system smoke alarm. The microwave was charred on the inside, and on the outside and had a terrible odor.

GE was called and they were not helpful. They accused us of not operating the unit properly and never heard of this problem. A technician was sent out and he reset the unit and found it to be working properly. He mentioned that the 'burnt' odor would remain and there was nothing we could eliminate the foul odor. The technician called GE and explained that we did not want this unit left in our home and we wanted compensation for the malfunction. We were told that there was nothing GE could do for us because the warranty had expired and we had apparently operated the unit improperly. We talked to a rude, obnixous representative from GE on the phone who had been talking to the technician and informed us that the technician was not allowed to remove the unit from our kitchen. We ended the conversation with the GE representative as we were wasting our time.

The technician was doing the best that he could and he loosened all of the screws that held the unit in place. He was put in an uncomfortable place being told he was not to assist in the dismantling of the unit. We removed it from the kitchen and placed it in our garage. We were leaving the next day for a cruise and would be gone for several weeks. If this had been left in our home we would have come back to a terrible odor. GE never again contacted us and we were forced to purchase a new microwave. We did purchase a new microwave and are extremely satisfied with the new brand. WE will never purchase another GE product. Why do we allow a company to continue selling a product that has had so many safety problems? GE did not bring good things to life in our home...it nearly ended our life.

I bought a new house three years ago with a variety of GE appliances. The dishwasher quit after a year, but that's not why I'm writing. My model JE 186 0GB microwave started throwing sparks and arcing while warming some salmon for 30 seconds. The smell of burning plastic is evident. I came online to check for the cost of a replacement, and came across an identical consumer complaint regarding the same appliance.

On December 21, 2004 we closed escrow and moved into a new townhouse equiped with a GE Monogram Kitchen dishwasher, microwave, stove, and refrigerator). On December 25 when we were preparing our holiday dinner, the microwave quit. An effort was made to repair it on three separate occasions. It was finally replaced. Last week this second microwave quit working. On December 26, 2005 the dishwasher flooded our kitchen when we were away enjoying our holiday weekend. The stove has had a recall. I waited all day on two separate days for the service technician to come. Our service window was from 8-12. No one came either day. The appointments were canceled at 4:30 in the afternoon. Hopefully someone will show up tomorrow to take care of the stove and hopefully the microwave.

I purchased my microwave in November of 2004 and have had several problems with it since then. The lights blew out over the summer of 2005. The exhaust fan stopped working in the fall of 2005. The numbers starting flashing about a month ago. And finally, tonight my microwave won't stop running without leaving the door open.

Oh, what a buy this microwave was!  I plan on contacting GE, but as I am sure it's out of warranty, I am stuck with a useless microwave.
