Select Comfort - The Trench Effect

Consumer Complaints & Reviews

I bought the bed back in May 2011, received in June, we roll in to the middle of the bed and it has been less than a year since I got it. We noticed that it got worst after the second month, we even tried sleeping with our heads to the side of the feet but if feels like there's a whole under our feet. I have talked to customer service after they had me check for broken pieces on the base. They said, they had that problem before and that they could fix it by sending the replacement dual chambers (at no cost).

It didn't help. I'm still having the problem; so I called them back. Now they send a foam insert (at no cost) that is about an inch thick and I still have the problem. I'm very unhappy with it and I want them to fix it or somehow check and see if I have a defective product or what the problem is, a product of that price should be in good condition for more than a few months. All I got out of this bed is back pain and uncomfortable sleep, customer service said, they will do what they can to make it work and so far is not working for me.

Has anyone had issues with neck pain and or lower back/hip pain? It seems that in order to alleviate my neck pain, I need to adjust the bed at 45 or higher but that usually causes low back and hip pain. If I go 35 or less, my neck pain returns. I spend the whole night turning in circles. Also, I had to purchase extra foam to put on the outside of the mattress sidewalks in order to push it into the middle. I also needed to purchase additional foam to build up the middle.

I came home from being out-of-town and had to have the fire department come over to file a report of an electrical fire caused by our Select Comfort Sleep Number Bed pump. Luckily our amazing neighbor heard our smoke alarms going off in our house and rushed in and found the air pump smoking under our bed and doused the pump with water to put out the fire. The carpet was also burned completely through to the pad. Pretty scary stuff! Had our neighbor not heard the alarms, our house would have most likely burned down. The Sleep Number bed and pump were only a year and a half old.

The bed (Twin) will no longer hold air, and sags in the middle. I am constantly having to use the pump. Since my husband passed, I purchased a twin and now it is not working any longer. I need help with this problem. Sleep Train where it was purchased no longer handles the Sleep Number Bed. I can not afford another mattress.

I purchased a dual-chamber Select Comfort Queen in 2002. To date, I've had to have the frame replaced. I suffer greatly trying to sleep in this bed because of the huge valley in the middle. I had 3 back surgeries and this bed was touted to be so beneficial, not! The pain and discomfort is intense. My old couch is a better deal. I don't understand why there hasn't been a class action suit to help all of us who have been duped by this company? My bed has the mold on the foam as well and this bed carries a (20) twenty year warranty. What's up with that?

We purchased a sleep number bed and we have the trench effect in the middle of the bed. Our numbers lower over night. All the foam is ripped and waved. We asked to have it replaced and they told us the most they could do was pay for shipping. We did not know that every 3-4 yrs we were gonna have to spend $100 on new foam. We do not feel they have stood behind this expensive purchase we made from them. Our backs are in worse shape since we had it.

We bought a Queen Sleep Number bed 4-5 years ago. Based on the "testing" by the salesperson, we believed it would work for both of us. My wife, however, who weighs just 100 lbs and has a bad back, has never been able to inflate her side sufficiently to provide real support. I was reasonably happy with my side, but the LED displays on the controls began to "burn out" just at the 1-yr mark (as soon as the warranty expired, of course). Subsequently, my mattress has developed the same "trench" in the middle that other people have complained about.

When we called customer service, they told us we'd have to replace the entire pump & control assembly at a cost of more than $700! Even after several conversations with the company, their attitude was clearly, "tough luck, suck it up or buy a new unit". There is no customer "service" at this company and we feel ripped off. Our $3,000 bed will end up as a decoration in the local dump.

I purchased an I10 Split King with adjustable base. I spent almost $8,000.00 for the bed and accessories. It turned out to be the worst bed I have ever owned. You will roll off the sides or into the crevice between the two top mattresses if you don't sleep right in the middle of the mattress. The company also has the worst and rudest customer service I have ever talked to. I called when I had problems with the pump and they told me to get under the bed and disconnect everything and reconnect it. I am disabled and cannot do that. They told me that they would come out one time but after that, it would be $169.00 to come out and fix this piece of junk.

I purchased a Select Comfort Dual Chamber double size bed, on March 4, 2011.

I paid for the company to set up my bed in my home. I am now experiencing a "valley" effect in my bed. Not once when I called for information nor when I placed my order was I told that this bed was designed for two people to sleep in. I then contacted Customer Service and I told them my problem with my bed. Their response was that the bed is designed for two people, not one. They said that they could remedy this by me returning at my cost the dual chamber, and then pay for the single chamber. I then told them no, then they replied ok and asked me to pay for the return of the dual chamber and they will send me the single chamber. I have a friend who has the same bed and she is a single sleeper and she did not have this problem.

I find it rather invasive on them now acting like I am supposed to tell them how many people sleep in my bed. If they would have told me upon my purchasing of this bed that they had single or dual chamber, then I could have made an informed purchase. Instead they did not tell me and now are trying to tell me that it was my mistake when it was their fault for not having informed me. I also have checked their website and see no place where they state "how many people sleep in one's bed."

I would like for this to be remedied as I find what they are doing, unfair.

Five years ago, we bought a Calif. King, $4,000. We were told full guarantee for 20 years. Well needless to say five years later, my side of the bed leaks, the remote doesn't work and the motor for my side doesn't work. Of course as others have stated, it is not fully covered but pro-rated. Not very happy with the bed nor the company. Very unhappy and hurting back. Ex-customer!

I made an expensive mistake in buying one of these beds. This bed never did sleep comfortably. After several months, the middle of the bed developed a "valley" and was terrible to cope with. After the first year, the pump went out of commission and the company said that it would cost $130 to replace the pump. I was told by the store that sold me the bed, in Oxford Valley Mall in Middletown Township, Pennsylvania, that everything associated with the bed was absolutely guarenteed. I wound up throwing the bed in the trash and buying a conventional bed. It was an expensive mistake.

My back somethmes hurts when I sleep and I had a hard time feeling comfortable at night. When our house burt and we started over I was always hearing the ads on how wonderful this matress was for back problems so I just knew this was going to be the answer to a prayer. So I called the 1-800 number and ordered the set of king size. I should have thought something was wrong when the woman talked me into ordering a matress pad. We have had the bed for about two years and I can not get the settings right to be in no way comfortable and my back hurts even worst.

After realizing how dis-satisified I was and uncomfortable I started playing with the settings only to realize that they would not stay where you were setting them. I bought a second padding then a temperpudic pad and to this day I am still very dissatisified and angry, for such false advertizement. So I went on the internet to find that I'm not alone. After reading about all the others problems I know there is no use in my complaining to anyone on the manufacturing side. I hope that someone will maybe come along and take a class action suit on these people and make them aleast give us our money back.

I have litteraly wanted to set a shotgun and blow my matresses all to pieces so I could justify purchasing another new bedding set but I can't afford to start over right now and don't appreciate being so mislead. Maybe we should all get together and make our own commercial. I'm sure they would like mine, atleast get it out to the people how dissatisified they are going to be. I'm going to put my opinion on face book and at least try to get the word out. Even though I'm sorry for the rest of you, I'm glad to know it just wasn't me. If I can help in anyway please let me know.

Cliff Notes version:

This bed is awful. It is the biggest bunch of Hammered Bandini that I have ever purchased! DO NOT BUT A SELECT COMFORT BED. $2,500 down the drain!

Purchased Model 5000 10/24/2002 for $2,500

At first, everything seemed OK. After the 30 day trial period was over, and could not return the product, I became dissatisfied with my purchase.

1) I could never get comfortable with the bed. I ALWAYS had this feeling of being half awake/half asleep using the bed. I tried it as it was purchased from the company. No good. Then, I tried a foam pad. No good. Then, I tried an "egg crate" pad. No good. I tried every number available to get comfortable. I set it so low that I felt like I was sleeping in a trough.

2)It always felt like I was sleeping on a hill. I noticed that one of the cross members of the frame was broken. Maybe that would explain why. July/2009 I called CS, looking for a replacement part, I was willing to pay for it. I explained the situation to CS. SELECT COMFORT SENT OUT A WHOLE FRAME AT NO COST TO ME! Kudos's to them!

3)So I took everything apart, setup the new frame and the mattress. Same Result.
Still feels like I am sleeping on a hill.

4) The mattress constantly "creeps" over the frame by 6-8 inches. I have to keep pulling it back onto the frame.

5)The sides of the mattress squish down looking like a "z" or a "parallelogram'

6) So I have been sleeping on an on old couch for about the last 6 years and get a pretty good nights sleep.

I have tried everything, but I have had it.

This week-end I am going to ship this off to BP Horizon oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico, have them sink it 5,000 feet down, and see if they can use it to stop the leak. That's the ONLY useful purpose for this product. Total waste of money!

We had not had our bed a year yet when I noticed my husband's side was not level but kind of rolled down. I called CS; they asked me how much my husband sat on the side of the bed?! "No more than normal," I told them. "Long enough to set the clock and get ready for bed." He is not a big guy either. They told me he should not be sitting on the side of the bed. (I guess we should leap into bed!) They then told me to swap the foam parts from his side to my side. I did this and then saw that the foam piece at the top of the bed was twisted like the foam piece on my husband's side.

I wonder who or what had been sitting on the top of the bed, under the head board to cause this piece of foam to twist? I was told the foam pieces are not covered under the warranty. What exactly is covered under this warranty? I will never, never, never own another Sleep Number bed nor say good things about them. We paid cash for our bed, making them wanting to help us, out of the question. It's too bad I didn't look for this web site before we spent our money. Please don't buy this bed, you will be sorry.

I haven't dealt with anyone, but upon looking at the complaints, I know I am not alone. I have a queen size that fills up on the sides and rolls you to the center of the bed. I don't have an indicator as to what number I am. It just says softer or firmer on the remote. This is a sleep number of what? I am now getting back aches and neck aches like crazy. It's no longer a comfortable night's sleep. I have the bed 2-3 years. I don't want something for the middle of the bed. I would like a pump that says what number I am and some sort of suggestion. I bought my bed over the internet so I don't know where it came from. Please advise. Thank you.

We purchased a Sleep Number bed on July 24, 2005 from Topanga Plaza Mall (Store 423) in California. During the first three months, we did not have any issues but after that, we had several issues. We had to replace the plastic frame for three times because it started cracking. At last, we had to special order a stand from Select Number that we had to pay because the sales person never told us about the farm when we purchased the bed. This clearly shows how incapable your employees are and how they are poorly trained on selling consumer goods. This is a reflection of your company. Unfortunately, as consumer, we have to suffer because of your negligence.

We had several issues with the chambers, and then they replaced it. We also had several issues with filling the air. Now, we have issues with remote control because the numbers are not reflecting. The major issue that we are running into now is that the bed is out of shape, and when we go to sleep, one person slides to other person because one side is higher than the other side. It cannot be adjusted.

If you look at our account, you will be able to confirm all these issues that I have told you about your product. It's not what you advertise or sell in your stores. We are very disappointed that your store employee tricked us on buying this bed. Each time we called your customer service department, they are not very helpful either. They wanted to charge us a fee like we have created all these issues. We do not want to deal with these issues anymore. We had enough. We ask you to return our funds of $2,549.98 so we can purchase another bed as soon as possible.

We are not satisfied with the way the bed looks when the air bags are set at 100. It looks sunk in on both sides and high in the middle. Our old mattress was a King Coil 23 years old and never looked like that. It is disgusting and the manager of the store looked at it and agreed but didn't do anything about it. We tried a foam lift under the top and under the air bags, to no avail. Also a new pump was installed; still no satisfactory results. We were charged 2 service calls of $170.00 and still it looks like a piece of garbage. I will never recommend this product to anyone. The price was too high and your service stinks.

My husband Ernesto and I bought a Sleep Number bed approximately 8 years ago in your Colma CA store. When we made our move to West so our Sons could care for us.CA in 2005, it became increasingly apparent that there were severe indentations where my husband and I slept, leaving a hardened lump in the middle where there is no air chamber.

When they were nice enough to send us a thicker and higher quality pad and pillow top, all was well for about 18 months. Today, I called Sleep Train, Sleep Number and finally Sleep comfort where I was rudely hung up on. I have had 2 severe back injuries and hip injuries with surgical intervention to follow. I cannot find a comfortable position in this sleep number bed to save my life.

Being treated rudely is not the type of PR your company needs. I have for the past two years informed my surgeon to never recommend this bed and to turn to Tempurpedic. Due to our finances raising from my husband's Cancer and my Disability; a Tempurpedic is off the charts to us. I am now informing the Better Business Bureau. My son, by virtue of his ability at websites and his partner an attorney will be advertising to future buyers that these are far from optical for someone with severe back and hip injuries.

This is not who I am but your company has left me no choice. My physician now wants me to have a bed where the head and feet can rise. If the bed was good, I would buy the appropriate frame, however, such is not to be. So, we will tough it out until a better heal comes around. We cannot afford a bed that will support my injured back. The best one we have found is over $5,000.00, which is out of the range of someone on disability. My husband has cancer and also needs a firm support bed where the head and feet lift. Tempurpedic has this. Or if you know of a better one, I am open to suggestions. e need to begin a class action suit.

This is insane. We paid over $2700 for our Sleep Number bed at Sleep Train Mattress Center in Modesto, CA. in 2003. We are not overweight people. I weigh 170 lbs and my wife 158 lbs. Our bed sinks in the middle and is lopsided. I took pictures of the bed and sent them to customer service. The customer service rep. complained that the pictures were not clear. That was a lie! Select Comfort sent out an extra piece of foam to be placed in the middle of the bed. This did not help at all. This is the worst bed we have ever owned. Buyer beware! Do not buy a Sleep Number bed! Select Comfort should be sued and put out of business for selling a defective product they don't want to fix or be responsible for.

I am the owner of 2 Sleep Number beds, a 7000 and a 5000. I never had problems with the 5000, but from the onset, the 7000 has given us problems without any resolution from the Sleep Comfort Company. Our problem with the 7000 is that the inner workings push out on both sides of the bed extending 5 to 6 inches beyond the box form. Last year, the company sent me new foam to replace the original foam with no resulting improvement.

My most recent call left me stunned as they offered a mattress cover replacement with a charge of over $400.00 plus shipping to replace the mattress cover. Without even knowing, for sure, whether that is where the problem lies. I do believe the cover is bigger than it should be, but I'm not the expert. Instead, I suggested that they send a technician to check out the problem before we do something we should not.

I even, reluctantly, offered to pay for the service call. I then asked for his supervisor to see if the charge could be dismissed and to see if they would take responsibility for, perhaps, a faulty product. After talking to his supervisor without satisfaction and with a dismissive attitude, I asked for another supervisor above her and she told me there were no others above her. I reacted with incredulity when I asked her if she reported directly to the president, Bill McGlaughlin of Sleep Number. She said "yes," she does report to him.

I was sold on Sleep Number mattresses many years ago when Rush Limbaugh spoke of its praises, and frankly, I do enjoy the 5000, but the 7000 is exasperating.

I purchased a sleep number bed in September 2007 - within a few months, the bed began to sag in the middle, I called Customer Service and was sent some cheap foam rubber and instructed to take the bed apart and insert the form where it was sagging. The result was that it did nothing to improve the sagging. May 2008 the pump used to fill and change the firmness of the chambers quit - I was sent a replacement at no cost. May 2009, the pump once again quit, when I called customer service again I was informed this pump would cose me $125.00. I asked to speak with a supervisor and asked how they could market a bed with obvious defective pumps and expect the customer to pay for it. The bed costs in excess of $2,000 and is totally dependent on the pump to operate the chambers in the bed.

All of this was to no avail and I am now stuck with a bed that is not only uncomfortable, it is not in a condition that can be used at all.

I believe this is unfair to the unsuspecting public and the sleep number bed should have a lifetime warranty for the pump !

We bought a queen size sleep # bed. We enjoyed it for a short time, but then started experiencing the "trench effect". My husband would set his side soft, whereas I would set mine firmer. I would then roll into him. I would make up constantly throughout the night and have back aches in the morning.

About 1.5 or 2 years into our "lifetime" set, my husband'a side of the bed would deflate during the night, causing him to wake up during the night, reset the # and still wake up to a deflated bed & back ache. I called their customer service and the recording had an option to choose for problems w/ your pump, which tells me that they are having major issues. I was told to go to the store and buy some caps to test the air chambers, which was a real pain to get to. We did this and called them w/ the results. We were then told that they could send us a replacement pump for $198.00 plus shipping. Our warranty was prorated and this was our 30%! Needless to say, I went w/ the cheaper option op buying a connector kit wfor $15.00.

When you purchase a vehicle and there is a known problem, they have a recall and it is fixed at no charge to you. Since sleep number knew this was a major defect experienced by many, they should have stepped up to the plate and offered replacement parts and no cost or postage and handling only.

I plan on getting rid of my bed as soon as possible. What a waste of a major investment. I would have been much better off purchasing a traditional mattress.

On September 11, 2008, we bought a $3290 Sleep Number bed at their Barton Creek Mall, Austin, TX, store. The bed has been sloping to the side. Today we finally found the cause of the problem we've been having. The side part bulges causing the bottom part to slide off the side rails on the bed frame.

We started contacting the company shortly after delivery within the warranty time complaining that my husband kept sliding to the side of the mattress. I was told all kinds of things to try. We did and then we left town.

We travel extensively and each time we returned I called asking for help. By this time I was told our warranty had run out. I was sent pieces of hard foam and told many different ways to place the foam when I repeatedly called asking for help. I was told to check the chambers, and on and on and on.

Today I got to talk to the supervisor AJ after once again bending and stooping and taking the bed apart when I finally found a bulge in the side piece.

So I asked AJ to send someone out to fix this problem and was brusquely informed the bed was out of warranty, but that they will send the part of the bed that bulges by mail but that I must install it. When I explained that my husband and I (my husband is 79 and has a bad back) are too old to lift the bed and take off the old part and I needed help, he said I would be charged $159 for a repair man. The company installed the bed, and the installers should have caught this faulty part, but the company will not send someone to fix this problem. I would be ashamed to work for a company that has such shabby policies.

We have had our Sleep Number king size bed (we bought the top of the line 9000 because of my husband's back problems) for less than a year. Almost at once we noticed that the bed had two valleys where my husbnad and I sleep. I asked the sales man about that when he called to see how we were enjoying the bed. He said that you had to shake it? Shake what?

After Christmas this year when I started house cleaning, I decided to ask about this again. When I went back to the store, of course , the sales man who sold us the bed was no longer there, and the gentleman there just handed me a card and said call the service department, which is in Minnesota. I called and they said I could send in pictures of the bed or have a technician come look at it for a charge of $170.00. (this is a $5000.00 bed) I agreed to that because if they could fix it or tell me what to do, it might be worth it.

Well, the technicians came and looked at the bed and they said that they never saw this happen before except where the person sleeping in the bed was a 400 pound man. Neither my husband nor I am that heavy. They said that in that case, the pillow top was replaced. I, then, called back to the service center in Minnesota, and they said that normal wear and tear was not covered in the warranty. I told than that the bed was less than a year old and it looked 20 years old, and I felt that I was sleeping in a hole all the time. They said that there was nothing they could do. Except I could fluff it with a vacuum cleaner or unzip it and shake it. Well, I did both and it looks just the same.

So, here we are with a l year old $5,000. bed that we are very unhappy with, and the company will not do anything about it even though their technicians said that they probably would replace the top. I can't believe their service, and the fact that they charged me for not making the problem right.

We've had the bed for 2 and half years. The pump malfunctioned within the first year. One side would fill but not the other one. The company replaced the pump and no cost. A year and some later the pump malfunctions again, this time it doesn't work at all. They want $ 160 for a replacement. Which doesn't sound like a lot, if at least 5 years or more had past after purchase. For a $ 3000+ bed, I think the pump should be of better quality. What guarantee do we have that this pump won't break within the next 12-18 months?

So far I've had 2 bad pumps, in 2 and a half years, so it doesn't speak well for this company. I feel like I will have to replace the pump every 12-18 months for a fee. What should I do? I think I was sold a defective pump the first time, and was replaced a refurbished pump the second time, that didn't last long either.

We purchased a Select Comfort Bed. The first thing we noticed was that we rolled to the middle of the bed. Then we noticed the plastic supporting beams were breaking. Select said they would replace the mattress, which they did three times, but we still can't get a good night's sleep. Next we noticed mold growing on the air mattress.

We spent over $1,000 on a glamorized air mattress. They won't refund or upgrade us to a better mattress. I am ready to pack it up and take it back to the store. My Chiropractor advises us to put it in the garbage.

We purchased the 5000 Queen Select Comfort bed with standard foundation to the tune of $1,800.00, in May of 2004. It was the first new bed we ever purchased. WHAT A MISTAKE! From the very first we rolled to the middle of the bed. I've made numerous calls to the company to complain. I've been told I needed more foam inserts. I placed the foam as directed by customer service. We stilt roll to the middle of the bed.

We even went back to the store to see how their beds were set up. I mentioned to the company that maybe we had a defective bed. I was told in a heated voice, "We don't have defective beds"! I asked for someone to come out to see if the delivery men put it up wrong. It was like I was asking for their first born.

After going back to the store again, the manager came to our house to help us out, the bed was set up fine. We even changed the chambers around to see if that would help. No such luck. The manager said the company should pay for an upgrade for us. I called customer service again today, the person was nice, she did sympathize with me but said there is nothing they will do. I'm to sell the bed and cut my losses.

I asked to speak to someone higher up. No luck there either. The customer service rep thanked me for being polite and not swearing at her, apparently that is a problem. She also said that this was a large problem and eventually corporate will have to do something to correct the problem of people rolling to the center. Her supervisor wanted to know who the manager was I spoke to, because of his recommending an upgrade. I told her I was not going to throw this guy to the wolves because he has been trying to help us fix a problem. We should of been made aware of potential problems in the beginning.

So, we are STUCK with a bed we HATE! Stuck with the loss of money and continued back problems. Hey at least our chiropractor is getting rich off of us having a horrible bed.

The money took us forever to save. That has been the hardest to swallow. We can't afford to go buy a new bed to replace this one. The continued back pain is horrible. I've had 6 surgeries in 18 months and have to sleep on the couch due to the fact it's more comfortable.

I purchased a Select Comfort sleep number bed over a year ago. It only took 2 weeks for my wife and I to realize what a poor investment it was. First I contacted customer services and explained that between my wife and I the bed not only was extremely uncomfortable, it was poorly supported and over hyped on TV.

We can't get close at night due to the difference in pressure level of our two sides. The foam center piece repeatedly collapses leaving a divet in the center and if either of us moves or attempts to get out of the bed the other rolls to the opposite side. The manager instructed me that there is an adjustment period -- well it's long overdue.

This overpriced inflatable mattress is just not comfortable. We are constantly taking it apart and readjusting it.

My fiance and I purchased a queen-sized Select Comfort bed for $1500 (without frame). After three months of use the mattress cover began to tear on one side causing the foam to hang out and chambers to become shifty during movement. The foam piece between the chambers is quite uncomfortable as well. The bed is uneven and hard to adjust for two people to sleep well. The mattress constantly shifts to the foot of the bed causing more tears under the mattress cover.

Lastly, and most important: After losing friends to a tragic fire in a Rhode Island night club (foam materials on the walls of the club caused this fire to spread in 50 secs killing 100 people and injuring at least 300 more), I decided to question Select Comfort about the foam in my bed. I emailed them 10 times to be exact, they will not respond to one question "Is the foam material in this bed highly flammable material?"

Frankly, my sex life is so much worse because of this bed. It has caused a mental strain on the both of us because we can't even enjoy ourselves intimately on this damned thing. My fiance complains of constant upper back/neck pain. I now have to consider purchasing another bed. I've only had this one for one and a half years. They guarantee it to last for 20 years. The pump is loud -- we can't adjust our beds at night or we'd wake the baby and the neighbors!

For my lower back pain, my chiropractor suggested that I buy a Select Comfort bed. I ordered the bed in the beginning of January, and it took about a month and a half for them to finally come and set it up. I was immediately unhappy with it. I paid over $1,000 for a cheap air mattress on top of a plastic foundation. Came complete with a cover that at least made it "look" like a decent bed.

My chiropractor told me that it takes a few months to get used to it, but that I would love it once I did. Well, it's been 5 months since they set this monstrosity up. There is no return policy at this point, and I have more back pain in my upper back than I can stand. I have no doubt that this horrible bed is to blame.

We have two separate air chambers. If you are not smack dab in the center of your chamber, you can actually feel "off-center", and while you sleep, your body tries to compensate for the sense of sleeping on a hill (so to speak). If I have the mattress the way that they recommend in their booklet, I wake up with my lower back killing me. When I sleep with it on a firmer setting, I toss and turn all night and wake up with my upper back killing me.

In the fall of 2003 we bought the extended queen Select DIScomfort mattress and bed frame. I haven't had a decent night's sleep since! Unfortunately, my husband loves it. He sleeps with a softer setting than I do, so for much of the night I am trying not to roll onto the softer side of the bed.

If I try a softer setting, my back hurts so much it is a challenge to crawl over the rigid edge. I do admit that the mattress is fairly comfortable IF one sleeps on their back. The body in a moderate V shape is much like a hospital bed with elevated head and feet. However, if one sleeps on their side, and the head and feet are higher than the hips, a V shape is not comfortable. The body is not meant to be bent into that uncomfortable position.

The air does not disperse evenly. Forget about the claims that it reduces pressure points on the hips and shoulders and that the mattress supports the lower back. There is no conformation to the individual body at the softer settings. I am extremely frustrated with this purchase and the fact that I can sleep better on my old soft sofa than I can on this $2500 piece of junk.

My husband and I purchased a Select Comfort bed. I suffer from arthritis and fibromyalgia and it has been about 10 years since I have slept thru the entire night. We were looking forward to me being able to get some sleep. We purchased the bed in October of 2002. This being after three attempts to get the right bed to us.

The long and short of the story is that the bed, after six months developed a "trench" in the middle. My husband and I were not able to get any sleep because we were rolling into each other all during the night. We called the company, they told us nothing could be done as our 30-night guarantee was over. (This had nothing to do with the 30 night guarantee, this was a malfunction of the bed).

They sent a piece of foam to "remedy" the problem. This did nothing except to make it like a speed bump in the middle of the bed. We called again, they sent another piece of foam. This, as expected, did nothing to give us any rest. Another phone call, another "sorry your 30 night guarantee is over," another piece of foam.

We spent $1500 for a bed that we thought would last us at least as long as our old mattress had. I am now in so much pain that my productivity level is very low, I am depressed because I hurt all the time and can't get the things done that I used to. Yes, existing health issues were already there, but they have only gotten worse with continued use of the bed.

To top that off, my husband of 33 years works 72 hours a week. I only see him just before he crawls into bed. 11:00 at night, and then he is gone at 6:30 AM. This is the only time I can be physically close to him. Now that is gone, as neither one of us can sleep on that bed. I am furious and have talked to people about it, only to find out that two of JUST OUR friends have had the SAME experience. They could very easily just take my complaint and filled in their names, basically.

I purchased a dual air chamber full size mattress through the Select Comfort Mattress Co., via the internet. It was delivered and I set it up according to the directions. The bed is designed for the comfort of two people. One person could have firmer mattress on their side and the other person could have a softer side.

However, when one side is inflated softer than the other side the person on the firmer side feels like they are rolling into the softer side. So after several nights of discomfort for my boyfriend and I, I contacted the company and they informed me that my 30-night trial had expired so they could not give me a refund, but they would indeed try to fix the problem.

So they sent me a chamber lift for the softer side of the bed, to lift it up. This chamber lift was nothing other than a piece of foam, approximately 1/2 inch thick. They sent me directions on how to install this, which has diagrams of the problem and how this would fix the problem. Clearly I believe they were aware from other complaints that this was a problem, or they wouldn't have these diagrams.

So that didn't solve the problem, so I again contacted them and they sent me another chamber lift, and that also didn't solve the problem, but caused another problem. It made the soft side higher than the firm side, so again the rolling into the other side problem.

I again contacted them asking for a refund and they absolutely refused sticking to their 30 night guarantee, so they sent me again another piece of foam to place in the center of the bed, this caused a hill in the middle of the bed, then it felt like rolling out of bed on each side of the bed.

By this time I was very unsatisfied with their product and again asked for a refund, not asking for the money I had already paid, just asking them to take back their product, and credit my account for the remaining balance. They again refused with the same reason, the 30 days had expired. So again they sent me yet another piece of foam.

I was so frustrated with it that I decide to check their warranty, as the mattress comes with a 20 year warranty, and there I discovered that they don't cover the foam in their warranty, so I wondered why they were trying to fix a problem, that wouldn't be covered with what they were fixing the problem with. So that a year from now even if their foam inserts had fixed the problem, which it did not, I would indeed have the same problems, that would not be covered under their warranty again.

So I again contacted them and brought this to their attention, and they again just referred to their 30-night guarantee. I feel their product does not work as they say it will and neither will their attempts to fix it. They have told me that it is just a matter of my opinion, and they can do nothing about my being uncomfortable or unsatisfied with their product.

There must be a way to get a refund on this product, even though the 30-night trial had expired, and I would like to know how I could get credited to my account. I think that because of their attempt to fix the problems with something that they don't warranty, that they should give me a full refund and take back their product. I have put their mattress back in its shipping boxes and have bought another conventional mattress, because I could not sleep another night on this Select Comfort mattress.

The consequences of this are that I now owe over $1,200 to a finance company that is now harassing me for the money, and going to take it to collections if I don't pay. I don't want to pay for something I can't sleep on. This will damage my credit rating, which will make it hard for me to make purchases that need to be financed in the future. I was already turned down by the company I had to buy my new mattress from, due to this being on my credit record, so had to pay cash for the new mattress.

It has also caused me to lose sleep at night, do to the uncomfort of their mattress. Also caused a problem in my relationship with my boyfriend as he could not sleep on this mattress, and both of us would wake up with back pain in the morning. He would have to sleep on the couch, which was emotionally damaging to our relationship. I have also been emotionally damaged, by losing sleep at night and by this company not caring about my comfort.

First of all, Joyce should not ruin her credit by refusing to pay the finance company. She is legally obligated to pay them whether she likes the mattress or not. However, she should aggressively seek a refund from the company. We'd suggest a firm demand letter sent via registered mail, giving the company 30 days to refund a reasonable portion of the purchase price.
