All About HSBC

H&R Block makes many millions per year by filling out what are basically some pretty simple government forms. It then makes quite a bit more by charging a few dollars to file the tax return electronically, an action that costs it nothing. On top of that, it makes an enormous additional fee through its Refund Anticipation Loans, an astonishingly expensive service that most taxpayers do not need and should not buy.

Other complaints include ...

Avelino of Galveston TX (2/1/05):
H&R Block is advertising in Spanish on National TV that a Notary Public is not a tax preparation expert. They train and hire new people every year and I know they have no experience because I call to see if they know what they are doing and most of the time they do not know the answer. I think this type of advertising is perjudicial to us tax preparers.

I prepare taxes and am a Notary Public also. My experience doing taxes have nothing to do with being a Notary Public, however; I have lost many clients in the last two years due to their slander.

Cheryl of Boise ID writes (2/2/02):
I have had H&R Block prepare my taxes since 1984. Today I went to have my taxes done, two days ago I made an appointment for noon. When I got there I waited for 30 min. only to find out the computer my tax preparer was using was down. So I said I would leave my information so she could do them when it came back up.

Should I mention that other people where having their taxes prepared on computers that were working? At 3 p.m. I had not received a call back. When I called to find out about my taxes, I was told the preparer was with a client and I would receive a call back soon.

After 7p.m. I was mad, still no call. I called to say I would be there to pick up all my information. To no surprise I left there empty-handed. After calling another branch, I got a cell phone number. I finally received a call saying I could get my information back. It took almost nine hours not to have my taxes prepared, NOTHING had been done!

They made me feel like I wasn't a client. They made me feel as though my time spent waiting was worth nothing!
