FedEx Buys Kinko's

Thomas of Newark CA (12/1/03):
Shipped package via FEdEx Ground "Insured." Box was destroyed by FedEx. Provided proof of value. I was issued a check for $100.00, the max amount FedEx will issue "regardless" of value or the amount of insurance you pay for. I was sent a letter pointing out exception items (which is about everything that can be shipped).

I have been paying for insurance for all my shipments every day. Not one time have I been told by FedEx that I am paying for a service I will not be receiving. FedEx continues to take customers insurance money without disclosing that they can never get more than $100. I have been paying for insurance when FedEx knows that it is ripping me and the public off by asking for and taking the insurance money. (They will not refund the overpaid insurance either) This needs to be stopped.

Jennifer of Bohemia NY (11/18/03):
I had a $2,400 diamond ring I needed to return to shop nbc. Shop nbc requested that I ship the item in the original packaging so I called fedex to get a price on shipping and INSURANCE (yes I said INSURANCE). The fedex rep. explained to me shop nbc and fedex have an account together and shop nbc insures all merchandise returned and he proceeded to schedule a pick up.

I was not satisfied with just his word, wanting to be extra careful with such an expensive item I called shop nbc to verify. Good thing -- shop nbc told me they would not insure the package because of the nature of the return (I was dissatisfied with the ring versus it being broken or damaged). I called fedex back and cancelled my pick up and inquired about a price for INSURANCE, the fedex rep. gave me a price for INSURANCE and shipping, off I went to the nearest fedex facility.

When I got there I told the fedex rep. I had never sent a package out before and asked for her assistance. I told her I needed to purchase INSURANCE since it was a $2400.00 ring, no problem she replies and gives me the same price as the rep did on the phone, weighs it, labels it and on my way I was, feeling confident I had been extremely careful.

Six days later I received a letter from shop nbc stating they received my package although it was empty, now keep in mind when I mailed it they weighed it, when it got to shop nbc the only thing in the bag was an invoice. HMMMM what could have possibly happened to the ring?

I called shop nbc and they told me to relax I had purchased insurance through fedex they would pay me. I called fedex they told me no problem all you need to do is file a claim. I filed the claim and a week later I received a check back for $100.00 I called fedex furious. It turns out fedex don't give INSURANCE just a declared value. What the heck is declared value? I still don't know.

I honestly believe it means I paid extra money for no apparent reason. Fedex also let me know they only give $100.00 max on jewelry, why wasn't any of this told to me when I sent the package. They also instructed me to look on the opposite side of the receipt for terms and conditions, but I could not since it was covered up with a giant white receipt label.

After speaking to Hope, an executive of claims at fedex she did admit a lot of wrongdoing on fedex's behalf and she would try to get back a little more then the usual $100.00 for me, but what good is that? do they suppose I may be able to haggle with shop nbc and offer them less then the original $2400.00? I did have to get a lawyer I will do what I have to get my full $2400.00 back.

The hours, tears, phone calls, and faxing I have spent on this situation is endless. but I will continue to spend my time to help make sure this dosn't happen to another person. By the way I called fedex four times in one day to get a rate on a package with INSURANCE and four different reps gave me a price, after asking if the package was insured in full, they all replied the same thing "YES"

Donna of Trafford AL (10/27/03):
I went to FedEx Ground in Irondale Alabama to pick up a package. I opened the package and promptly went back to the counter to return the item I had ordered from the shipper, a home shopping company. I insured the item for the purchase price of $249.00. I was not told that there would be a maximum declared value of $100.00.

The item was lost by FedEx so I sent a claim for the $249.00 item on 10/10/03. I received a check for $100.00 today stating that this was a full & final settlement of my claim. I charged the 249.00 item on my credit card and still owe the 249.00 but I only get 100.00 to pay for the item that FedEx lost. If they had not failed to tell me about the $100.00 maximum declared value I would have made other arrangements to return the item.
