MBNA Credit Protection Plan

Consumer Complaints & Reviews

I purchased this plan in the mid 90's to ensure my family would not have to bear financial problems in the event I became unable to pay existing credit card payments. I faithfully paid all the extremely high charges added to my credit card for this protection. I became disabled in the early 2000's and I filed for a claim. Now I am being sued for interest that the insurance company did not honor.

Same as people above, had about $150 accumulated over past 1 year, I finally noticed it and contacted them. I asked them to credit me for the entire amount as I never signed up for this. They called and I said yes. Keep your word and stick to it and say no you didn't. I get transferred to a supervisor and she offers $30 credit to let it go. You say no and they demand for the proof that you said yes, as they will say they can prove you that you said yes.

I had no call from them for 2 months. I file a fraud investigation via MBNA. I talked to a supervisor again at Infoprotector and she says they will open the investigation which should have been opened 2 months ago, to find the phone record that I said yes.

I got a call today and was reimpursed for the entire $150. So this is a organized and legal scam they are running and they are well prepared to take such calls. It seems they have a policy to handle such calls as they are very common. Stick to your word and demand proof and they will either have to prove the you are wrong or else give you your money back!

A gratuitous charge appeared on my MBNA credit card for $317 for a credit card protection plan that I did not authorize.

I have never given permission for a credit card protection plan from any credit card company. This one was started even after I said no.

I just completed a loan transaction with Bank of America. A few days later I got a letter in the mail from MBNA Credit Protection thanking me for signing up for their services.

After examining the material I could see what a scam they were running. They asked me to return a form to complete the service. The way it was phrased it could have easily been interpreted to mean return the card to refuse the service. Even without the card returning crap, the individual is still questioning if your loan provider had somehow misunderstood and determined that you really wanted this service.

I will have to call MBNA to assure they don't start charging me for something I don't want (by the way there was no phone number to call on the mailing - I had to go on the internt to get their service number). Bottom line - this kind of unsolicition should not be legal. It is over the line of being shady and unethical.

I saw that a credit protection charge of around $58 - $65 had been applied to my bills. I don't remember seeing the charge so I called and asked for confirmation that I had ordered this service. The woman said I'd ordered it by phone. I asked for a record of the phone call, she said it was probably erased by now.

I said I wanted to file a complaint. She said if I dropped the investigation, she'd credit my account two months. If I continued (with scant hope of winning my case) I would not be reimbursed. I just took the reimbursment for two months and am out $600, plus any interest I paid on that money.

I guess I am a fool and my money was soon parted!

After receiving my MasterCard statement (closing date 11/08/2001) I noticed a very high charge for credit card protection (insurance) for $100.99. I immediately called the 800 number and talked to representative Misty on 12/24/2001 at 6:00 PM PST. I asked what this was and after learning the information indicated that I did want this service any longer, credit these costs to my account and to immediately cancel it. She assured me that this was taken care of.

Recently, I was going through my statements and discovered this charge again on my statement (closing date 2/9/2004), for $45.80 this time. In going back through all my statements I have found that this credit protection was stopped in January 2002, following two charges for $100.99 (that I was not credited for) and $103.34. No charges appeared on my statement for 11 months, and then in December 2002 these same charges started again, and have been every month since. To date I have a total of $617.55 worth of credit protection service that I cancelled on 12/24/2001.

On 2/21/04 I called MBNA again and talked to Jean. After telling her my problem she advised me that MBNA offers the credit protection as a service but another company handles this, and that is who I should contact (877-406-3742, M-F 8 am to 7 pm EST). Today (2/25/04) I called this company and explained the situation to Felicia. After requesting the refunding of my $617.55, she offered me $25 as a valued customer, to basically go away.

When I rejected the offer she turned me over to her supervisor (Joanne - Account Supervisor). I explained the same situation to her and she at first offered me $45 as a valued customer, to basically go away. After I told her that it took 2 months to get the service removed (for 11 months) and magically appeared again in December 2002, she said that there was no record of me having this service before 11/23/2002. She said I enrolled for the service by telephone on that date. I told her that this was impossible.

Why would I sign up for a service that I cancelled a year earlier. At this point she indicated that she could have an investigation done on this to ensure that the solicitation was properly authorized, and would take 20 business days. I told her to proceed with this (however, I do not believe that this will show anything). I also advised her again to immediately cancel this service and to make a not in my record to take me off of the solicitation list. She confirmed to me that this would be done.
