My husband was pulling out of the lot from work and the whole right front of the car went down. He got out of the car and noticed the brand new tire was flat. When the mechanic at work went to help him put on the donut, they noticed that the spring and strut had broken sending a piece of spring into the new tire shredding it like a can opener. I had just bought 4 brand new tires about 2 months ago and had to buy another new tire. I also had to buy new struts and springs which were not cheap. I had to borrow money to get the job done.

While backing up out of driveway, the front driver side spring of my car broke and punctured a tire. I need to have it fixed and to get a new tire.

I have a 2002 Sable. I was at work when I noticed that I had a flat tire. No biggie. Someone at work changed it and could not get the tire off. After a few minutes, they realized that the spring had broken and was logged in the tire. So naturally I had to have it towed to the shop. This problem cost me $968. I had to have the front springs replaced along with the lings that go with this and a new tire and I am just back at work after two years.

2001 Sable rear spring broke in three and the front one has been broken and punctured the front tire covered under a recall. The ford told us that the rear one's were not. Also, I have a 2003 mountaineer; the rear spring broke but I was told that it was not a recall. I am not taking a chance and I am changing the fronts as soon as possible.
No one was injured but my money. No more Fords for us. They'll lose in the long run.

Backing out the driveway, I heard a loud snapping sound. I read about these problems before, so I pulled the car into the shop to have a look. I was thinking the spring never punctured the tire so I cut 2 inches off the coil to save the tire, and now upon further inspection, the other three springs have fractures in them so a replacement of all 4 struts and springs is a must now.

I brought my 2001 Taurus wagon in to have snow tires installed on Nov. 23, 2011 and the mechanic said that I had a cracked left front coil spring but that it was part of a recall, so it wouldn't cost anything to replace. I scheduled an appointment and was told the "offer" expired on Sept. 29, 2011, which is 10 years from the purchase date of the vehicle. I called Ford to find out why they never told me of this and they claim they sent out notices, which they didn't, at least not to me. I'm the only owner of the vehicle and live at the same address as I did when vehicle was purchased.
Ford wouldn't budge on this. I also noticed I had a suspension/strut service done in Oct. 2005. Shouldn't the dealer have noticed the recall or service bulletin at that time? This is my last Ford, that's for sure. It's gonna cost me between $700 and $1,000 to repair. I'm also selling all my Ford stock.

I had to replace all four struts and springs on our 2002 Ford Taurus; all four spring had broken. The right front spring broke and punctured the tire. Miles on it are 138,839 and I understand that struts need to be replaced but there is a big problem with the spring issue.
It could have caused an accident and the approximate cost of four struts labor and tires is $1000.00.

The right front strut and spring assembly broke and punctured a hole in the right front tire on my 2002 Ford Taurus. This is a defective part and Ford should take responsibility and correct the problem.

I took my 2003 Ford Focus SE with 73,000 miles on it to get the alternator replaced and when it was put on the lift, the passenger side coil spring broke at the base. I am so thankful it happened there and not on the highway with my child in the car! I bought this car used in 2005 and I am worried after reading these posts about the other springs breaking also. I have had to have the sway bar links and a new ignition module replaced. These are all known problems to Ford, yet they do not recall the parts and continue to put them in newer models. This is the first and only Ford car I will ever own!

Both rear springs broke on my 2003 Ford Taurus. I had to replace both rear springs and struts, plus pinch bolt sheared upon removal of struts. I had to remove the entire right rear wheel hub to remove sheared bolt. Luckily, the vehicle was stationary when broken springs were discovered. It could have been ugly if springs had broken and punctured tires while moving.

The left front suspension spring broke and punctured the left front tire causing it to explode. This happened when my wife got in the car to go to work, but the car was not moving. Thankfully, this did not happen while traveling 65 mph on the highway. I reported the problem to Ford and was told they would not assist with the repairs, even though a recall was made for the 2001 model year for similar problems. There are many reports of spring breakage, both front and rear for the 2002 models of Sable and Taurus. Ford needs to recognize this for what it is, a safety defect, and recall all the vehicles to have it fixed.

My 2002 Ford Taurus was backing up, and the front left coil spring broke. This is a known problem that has happened quite often with the Taurus. So I incurred repair cost for the car, and it punctured a new tire.

I have a Ford 2003 Taurus sport. The spring broke while car was idle in the driveway and punctured the front left tire. It is the second spring that has broken on this car. The total cost of repair has been around 700 dollars for the spring and tire cost. Ford 800 number says they will do nothing about it! My brother-in-law works at NAPA and tells me Ford springs are always breaking and they sell a ton of them. It will take someone getting killed to get their attention. I will never buy a Ford again. They sell junk.

I own a 2003 Ford Taurus. In Feb 2008, while leaving a parking garage, my Left front spring suddenly broke and my car came to a sudden halt. Luckily, I was not driving down the highway when this happened. I had the car towed to the dealership who said that I had to have both front springs and shock absorber assemblies replaced and I got stuck with a bill for $700! While being ticked off that a spring, of all things, could break (who ever hear of that happening?) I nonetheless caulked it up to bad luck. It was only after I had the repair that I learned that Ford in fact had a recall but my model year was outside of the recall period.
Now July 2010 I have the car into the shop for an A/C clutch repair and to replace the coolant tubes for $1200. (Ok , now the car is old and has 110K on it). When I went to pick it up at the dealership, they casually mentioned that my Rear Springs are broken and it would cost another $1000. I flipped out. It's one thing to pay for maintenance on an older car but now the Back Springs! Not this again. I'd like to know if there are other 2003 Taurus's that have also had this issue with the Springs and if there are, should a recall have been made for them as well and that we should be refunded of our repair costs ?

There is currently a federal safety investigation regarding spring failures in 2002 and 2003 Ford Taurus and Sables. My wife was backing out our 2002 Mercury Sable and heard a loud pop from the front of the car. Upon examination, you could see that the spring had broken and punctured the tire. The car had to be towed from the garage and the tire and spring both had to be replaced. I lost less than $1,000 in US dollars.

Both back coil springs on my 2002 Ford Taurus has Broken. I have been a Ford owner alsmost all my life, but if Ford doesn't extend it's recall on 2002-2004 Taurus to cover the broken springs, I will leave Ford altogether. Cost to replace both rear springs $600 This is totally ridiculous when Ford knew they had a problem.

After a lenghty walk home, called a repair shop and wrecker service. Both knew it was a Taurus/Sable as soon as I said broken spring.
Big problem for me tomorrow, because I am reading Ford is not warrantying the safety hazard they have created.

Was backing my 2002 Ford Taurus out of a parking spot at work when my tire blew. The coil spring on the driver side broke. Had to have it towed. Don't know yet what over damage there is. Already replaced rear springs 1 month earlier. The 2002 Ford Taurus should be recalled for this problem before someone is killed.

I've been reading through the complaints regarding broken coil springs in Mercury Sables. I have a 1993 Merdury Sable. The front coil springs were replaced by a recall in about 2001. Today, while changing tires, my mechanic noticed that the front springs are broken and need to be replaced. Approximate cost; $900. He also warned of potential tire damage if I didn't replace the springs soon. My point is that even with the original springs replaced by recall, the replacements aren't reliable either. And it is possible to drive on broken springs without being aware of it until someting more major happens.

the tauras and sables have real [bad] springs and they break way to easy on their own. I have had three cars break. There are some recalss ion the front springs for some years, but not for rear springs. Need to add rear springs and additional years to recall. Total rip off. costing me thousands, plus lots of greif. ruined tires - alomost killed my entire family

Driver side front coil spring broke and went through my tire. I am so glad that this happened in my driveway instead on the road to and from work which I drive 100 miles a day. Myself or someone else could have been seriously injured had it happened while driving. I now find out that there was a recall but does not meet the requirements. How can they put requirements on someone's life?

The coil spring on Ford Taurus broke on the driver's side.

2002 Ford Taurus: Broken front coil spring which ripped through the front tire causing a 6 inch gash. Luckily it happened in my driveway (4 yr old grand daughter in my car) and not on the highway driving 70 miles an hour! It looks as if the recall on the spring ended with 2001 but obviously Ford has not corrected the problem! I have not had my car towed in, yet so am unsure of how much it will cost me (est $500 +).

While backing out of a parking space, the right front coil spring broke destroying the right front tire. The bills for the replacement springs, tire and tow are now at almost $500. Looking at the past history of this defect, there are many other people that are having the same problem. Seeing that there was a recall on the 1999-2001 models, many of the victims own 2002-2003 models. Obviously, this defect was not corrected and therefore, Ford should open the recall to these models as well as a safety precaution. If this was to happen while driving, it could be catastrophic to the vehicles occupants as well as any other vehicles and pedestrians in the vicinity of the affected vehicle as it would most surely go out of control.

The driver's side left strut and spring assembly broke and punctured a hole in the left front tire. A problem I have been hearing about from so many people and complaints. The 2001 Taurus had the same problem and it was recalled and my friend whom it happened to was covered under recall. It just happened to my 2003 Taurus and there is no recall. The driver's side back strut and spring collapsed as well leading me to believe it is a problem with the springs, perhaps faulty design.
Ford has offered no help with this. My mechanic can't believe this is not recalled. I have now spent $669.00 for combo spring strut assemblies since all of them need to be replaced, you can't just do one side and that's not counting the tire that was punctured due to the faulty spring. I really want to push for this recall and see if there is anything that can be done for us that have had to pay out huge sums of money for this fix. Ford charges $350.00 each for the spring strut assembly.
How can anyone afford that? The tire was punctured. The car was flat to the ground on one side. Thank God, this happened in my parking lot at work, not when I was in the car or with my children in the car. The $669.00 is for the spring strut assemblies alone. Tire is extra. Labor to have the job done is extra. I don't have this kind of money. I really want to see if there is any kind of recall or payout for this particular situation. How can anyone afford this major repair? I have to have my car to go to work and have had to get rides for 4 days now. This is really inconvenient.

On March 13th 2010, my 2003 Taurus 96,000 left front spring broke while sitting in the garage. Tire was flat. Loud noise I noticed after trying to remove the tire. It would not come off. The spring had ripped through the tire. Thank goodness, I was not driving when this happened. Also about a month earlier, I broke the front passenger side spring on my 1999 Sable, no tire damage. I need to replace both stuts and spring now on the 2003 Taurus, which cost $600-$700 and $200 for the spring only on the Sable.

About a week after a friend of mine at work asked if I had ever had any problems with the springs on my 2002 Ford Taurus to which I answered no and chuckling, I backed out of the garage; and pop, the driver's side front tire was flat. Little did I know that after the front was fixed a week to the day later, bang, there went the driver's side rear tire. Both were caused by faulty springs.
I have three beautiful grandchildren and bought what I thought was a safe car to transport them in from Ford, the only make I have ever owned. And this is the thanks I get. Government motors here I come.

My Ford Taurus Spring failure and tire puncture. My Ford Taurus's front left spring failed and then caused a 6" gash through the tire causing an instantaneous and complete tire flattening. Luckily, it happened in the driveway but had it been at some speed, it would have ripped through the tire wall all the way around and very possibly caused an accident. From all the other reports here of the exact same failure, and mode of failure, this is a common fault of Ford's and deserves a recall or replacement compensation.

I bought my Mercury Sable in 2002 with 29,000 miles. 2010, 91,000 miles. I have had to replace the head gaskets, fuel pump, and other components related to the head gaskets. Today, while taking my 6 and 4 year old boys to school, the front right coil spring broke puncturing and blowing out my tire. Thank God I was close to home and not traveling at a high rate of speed. Just found out online that there has been an investigation into this problem with the coil springs and I was never notified! What if this happened yesterday when I was an hour away from home and traveling over 60 mph with my children in the car! Now they will not pay for the repairs! I am terrified to drive my vehicle with my children in it even after it will be fixed, and I cannot afford to purchase another.

The front left suspension spring had sudden failure. The spring failed sometime between Jan 18 to Jan 25 while we were on vacation. When the car was moved on Jan 26, the failed spring punctured the tire. The car was towed to the local Ford dealership and both front springs plus the failed tire were replaced. Total repair costs including towing were about $650.

My 2000 Ford Taurus front spring broke and ripped tire. It poses a much more danger than the Toyota problem. Toyotas can be shifted in to neutral and stopped. There's nothing a person can do when a spring goes and blows tire. Many, many have had this problem, and Ford does nothing. We need a recall.

I own a 2003 Ford Taurus with 70,000 miles. In November 2009, I had my car in for servicing, and they discovered both rear springs were broken near the bottom. Since they were not covered by recall, and could potentially cause a tire to be cut, I paid to have them replaced. Now, on January 7 2010, I went to back out of the garage, and heard scraping. This time my driver's side spring had broken, and sliced a foot long tear on the inside sidewall of my tire. Luckily, it did not happen while driving, since it would have certainly caused an accident.
The first set of springs cost $500 to replace. The second occurrence caused me to be late for work, and now the car is not drivable, until I pay for the front springs, plus a new tire. I have read numerous complaints, so Ford knows there is an issue with this, yet refuses to recall. Here is one more complaint to add to the list. Unfortunately, it will probably take a serious injury and lawsuit, before they will do anything about this.

I'm one of the lucky ones so far. I bought a used Ford product. I took it to my inspection station for a sticker. As soon as they put it on the lift, they said these vehicles all have a common problem, broken rear spring either at the top or the bottom of the spring. I had one of each, two broken rear springs, one at the top and one at the bottom. I see on your website that there are over 400 complaints for the same thing. Most of these people had the springs break while driving causing serious and dangerous incidents. Please add my complaint to this URL. The economic damage at this point will be to replace both springs before something more dangerous happens while driving. It is $800 to replace both springs. I plan to file a claim in small claims court to try and recover these losses.

Ford Taurus 2003 we were backing out our garage and heard a loud noise. Our left front coil spring broke, putting a hole in our new tire and breaking the stabilizer link. I am so mad about this! We called the garage where we got it and they said call Ford. Ford is saying there is no recall.

I just bought a 2002 Ford Taurus SES. It has 105,000 miles on it. One night, it was sitting in my driveway and the front coil spring broke. It went through my new tire. This happens a lot, says the service guy. The previous model year had a recall for this problem. 2002 doesn't. If you're driving and it breaks, you will wreak. There are a lot of these time bombs out there and nothing is being done about it. The damage this time was to my wallet, over $500.00. Then again, I wasn't driving it when it decided to break. So it could have been worse.

2003 Ford Taurus. The front driver's side spring broke (it was not due to rust or obvious wear), the spring then punctured and split the driver's front tire. Car had to be flat-bedded to service station, where it was determined that the front strut and sway bar link were also broken by the spring breaking. The car is being fixed. Luckily I was not driving when the spring broke. It was just sitting in the driveway. Costs involved are reaching $885.

Last year, the left front spring fractured and I had to install a new strut this year same time in December, right spring fractured and punctured the tire. Today after googling, found out this has happened to so many people. It's ridiculous. I have to shell so much money out of pocket in this economy. Ford has to recall this.

On Saturday, January 5, 2010, the front driver's side coil spring on my 2003 Mercury Sable GS snapped and punctured my tire (car has 70K miles). There is corrosion on the coil but only were it failed. I have saved the piece of coil that was in my tire. My brother is a mechanic and told me that there may be a recall on the spring. He did the work on the car because I needed to be at work on Monday morning but told me to check it out.
I found many complaints on the consumer affairs website but none for my model year. I contacted Ford and registered a complaint (#0289562315). The gentleman told me that my car wasn't included in the recall and that my car wasn't covered under warranty. He told me that I would be responsible for the cost of the repairs. I am very worried about the rear springs too. I frequently drive with children in my car. At the very least, I expected them to offer to inspect the rear springs but they offered nothing. Ford should pay for repairs when they are aware that a part is failing. I needed to replace the 2 front struts, buy 2 new tires (mine were discontinued) and pay for a front-end alignment.

Holiday weekend, backing out of drive (on coasting) loud explosion. Get out to see driver's front tire flat. Proceeded to change tire. Oncce re,oved tire, noticed coil spring failed and ruptured tire. Car needs towed for repiar. New tire has to be purchased. New Coil spring for sure. May need other work, having read other complaints. Some reports say they cannot repair only one side.

I am waiting for the service department manager at Jerry Ford, Leesburg, VA. to call me back. 2002 Ford Taurus SES. Right rear coil broke when backing out of my driveway. Physical Damage=Broken right rear coil. Economic Damage=TBD It is my understanding that the coil springs need to be replaced in axle pairs.

After hearing strange noise from rear with a few people in car, I had it checked at my usual Sunoco service station. Right rear spring was broken, they replaced the whole spring/strut unit, at my cost of almost $500. The fronts were done by Ford several years ago after one broke, at least they did do both then. This is too big a problem to let go, Ford should be held accountable for the rears also,I will gladly send my bill to them when it is made a recall, maybe I should anyway.

I own a 2001 Ford Taurus which I purchased new. The rear springs completely rotted out and needed to be replaced. The car has less than 70,000 miles. This appears to be a common issue with Ford. They recalled the front springs which have the same problem. This is definately a safety issue and they should be recalling the rear springs as well. I will never purchase another Ford.

Own a 2000 Mercury Sable LS... experiencing the same frustration as the 36 PAGES OF OTHER MERCURY SABLE AND FORD TAURUS OWNERS regarding broken coil springs.
These springs (front AND rear) were manufactured using inferior steel and/or process. The model year ranges from 1999-2003 from the complaints I have read. The springs WILL fail, perhaps catastrophically if the vehicle is in motion, slicing tires and causing further damage with cost that must be absorbed by the owner. Incredible!
Finally, in 2004, Ford issued a recall for certain model years, and for the FRONT springs only-- again, the same problem exists for the REAR springs!
Recall ID# 04V332000 - for the Mercury model.
I have had the front springs replaced at a dealer at manufacturer's cost. I still have 1 broken rear spring. I feel Ford should be replacing all 4 springs at no cost to the owner, and I will be contacting Ford (1-866-436-7332) and registering a complaint via the Office of Defects Investigation within the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

I took my car into the dealership service dept for an alignment. The called to tell my my coil spring (drivers front) was broken and needed to be replaced, but good news! It's covered under warranty. It was too late to do the work that night, so I drove it home (somehow I didn't hear the word BROKEN, I heard "Coil springs are recalled"). I took it back this morning to have all repaired. Tom the Service Mgr called me back to say, Oops! Only the 2001 (not 2002 Mercury Sable) are on recall. You gotta pay for your coil springs--and you have to replace both on an axle or the torque from the new one breaks the other--out of pocket. Only good news is that IF it is ever recalled, Ford will reimburse.

Had to replace springs on front of car and two years later did the rear springs. Car has only 75K on it.

I had no clue how many people had this problem. I have an 02 Ford Taurus. Early winter '09 I had hit a pot hole covered with snow and thought my car was going to implode. I made it to my driveway and couldn't see any damage. Later that day I began to back out of my drive way and heard a loud clanging noise and what sounded like an explosion. Driver side front tire had exploded. I thought I had to have ran over a nail or glass or some sharp object.
Upon further inspection, I found the object that was impaling it was my spring coil. I was thoroughly ****** mainly because it was a brand new tire. I had to have my car towed and after $400-$500 repair, plus a new tire, I was really angry to find this is a recurring problem in this 2002 Taurus.
Now months later my car is making a horrendous clanging noise when I make a sharp left turn, and it's only coming from that front driver side area. Ford should be held responsible and have to fix this cars throughout the car's life. I'm scared to death to drive this car and can not afford a new one. I only just paid this thing off in late '08 and problems immediately happened after wards. What happens if the spring goes while you are driving down the highway at 65 mph?

While my 16 year old daughter was backing our 2002 Ford Taurus down the driveway, the front left coil spring broke and punctured the tire causing an immediate blow out.
Upon researching this on the Internet, I found hundreds of other cases where this has occurred. I also became aware that other Ford Taurus models of the years 1999-2001 had recalls on Front and/or Rear coil springs for this same failure. My 2003 windstar also had a recall for this failure where the dealer proactively sleeved the springs.
I contacted Ford and they told me there was no recall for the 2002 models and to have it repaired at my expense.
Upon taking it to the repair shop, they showed me where one of my rear coil springs was also near failure. I had to have all four coil springs replaced including two new front tires for a total repair bill of $1800. Had this occurred at driving speed it could have resulted in a fatal accident.

I have a 2002 Mercury mountaineer and the rear springs are broken.MY ABS and airbag light stays on, my door sensor dont work, and i had to repair my transmission 3 times. FORD/ Fix OR Repair Daily.

I have a 2002 Ford Taurus and the rear springs are broken. This is the first car I ever had that that happened to. Also the air bag light went on. I don't drive the car that much as it only has 36000 miles on it. Also the rear wheel well rusted out and the guy that fixed it said it was the design. I have noticed a lot of other Taurus with the same rust on them even ones that are not in the winter weather as mine is.

backing up in driveway and heard loud bang, pieces of plastic, metal and rubber flew about 10 feet.I got out of car and spring on my 2002 ford taurus broke and exploded tire. when I called to have it repaired service station said that they hear this all the time on that year Ford

August 2008. While traveling in MO the driver's side front coil just snapped. I was just glad that it didn't tear up the tire since the coil was caught by the tire rim. I first thought I had a blow out. after getting it towed to Bethany, MO where I had to stay over night, because the local parts dealer did not have the strut and coil. The CV boot was also tore by the installer. I ended up replacing the other coil and strut when I got home, because I wanted both to be even and balanced (since one would have been 6 years old otherwise).

Cost of new tire was $72. The cost of the tow truck was $85. The cost of the repair is yet to be determined.
In excess of $157 repair bill. A documented problem with Ford coil springs resulting in unsafe driving condition of family vehicle.

The front drivers side coil spring on my 2002 Ford Taurus SES snapped, puncturing my tire. front passanger side tire and coil spring need to be replaced. Haven't checked the price yet.

Rear springs on 2000 Mercury Sable broken. Research has discovered this is a is a major problem. It an obvious manufacture defect. Prospective buyers have no notice of potential problems.
600.00 to replace

today i backed out of my driveway and ford taurus 2002 my left drivers side tire blew out. so my neighbor lifted it to put donut on and noticed my spring broke off and that caused a slice in my tire, in result of spring breaking, my strut was bent. so now i half to get it towed on mon, this is friday! so i have to go the weekend without a car!
im getting unemployment, thats my only income, i cant afford this. just got all new tires 2 weeks ago! im done with ford, glad there failing!

I was driving my 2003 Ford Taurus at 30 mph and the driver's side coil spring fragmented. I was able to bring the car to a safe stop, but fragments of the spring went everywhere. While the car has 140,000 miles on it, springs should not break like that.
$1400 worth of repairs - the spring fragments took out the strut and sway bar, as well as the left CV joint. The right side coil needed to be replaced for safety. I was told that if this had happened at highway speed, the results would have been far worse.

I own a 2000 Mercury Sable LS with 152,000 (highway) miles on it. Recently I replaced both front springs because one busted (luckily I was pulling out of a driveway and not driving down the highway). The other one was replaced under the recall that Ford sent out. Now I have discovered that the rear springs are also about to bust and it's going to cost approximately $500 to fix them. From what I have read, this is, and has been, a problem for a very long time.
WHY AREN'T THEY RECALLING THE REAR SPRINGS TOO? Does it take proof by a death by spring exploding on Ford vehicle on the front page of a newspaper for the consumer to get what is rightfully theirs, which is replacing ALL FOUR SPRINGS at no cost. Afterall, Ford made the cars, shouldn't they stand behind them.
$500 out of my pocket that I, as a single mother, cannot afford. Possible injury or death if driving down the road and spring explodes, as it has done in many other instances!

I also own a 2002 Ford Taurus. My car has been serviced at this dealership since purchase. It had 43,167 mi. I went for my inspection and learned it would not pass because of the rear springs. This was on 2/9/09. I had the car in for service 12/16/08. I also learned my warranty was 17 days expired. My bill was $632.38. My previous ford was a Tempo this also had a rear problem I believe was a bar of some sort. I have learned my lesson with Ford Motor Co.
I will not make another mistake. I plan on sending all of my invoices, copies of these complaints and the actual parts that were removed from my car to the President of the United States. It does no good to complain to Ford Motor Company. Perhaps this info will be helpful to President Obama and his Committee dealing with the problem with our car industry.

I got in my car in the parking lot to leave work and as I was pulling out of my space, we heard a loud metal grinding noise. We got out to notice that my front passenger tire was totally flat. I called AAA for assistance and the mechanic told me that the strut broke and spring snapped puncturing my tire. The car had to be towed and at the car service center, it was also discovered that my passenger rear strut was also broken.
As a result, we decided to replace all four struts and replace the tire at a cost of about $1,600. Please note that the car had only 47K miles on it.

2002 had a front coil spring fail in the summer of 2008. Fortunately, the car was under an extended service plan and the car was repaired. Later received a notice that Ford has warranted the front springs up to 100K miles.
This past week, the rear coil spring failed. Ford service said rear springs are not covered any warranty and this is a known problem with the 2002 Taurus coil springs.
Ford Motor does not appear to want to correct the problem. This places a huge hazard on every motorist on the roads.

While vacationing in CA Feb '09 we were told by a Sears garage that both rear springs on our '97 Ford Escort LX wagon were broken. We then checked for 'parts' on the web and discovered on your site that this has been a posted problem on a lot of Ford Taurus models and a few Escorts.
No damage done at this point and everything is secure except for some clunking but I will check with a Ford garage and see what they have to say! (If there are any still in operation.)

I was parked in a parking lot when the left front spring on my 2004 Ford Taurus exploded puncturing my new front tire that had less than 3000 miles on it. My Ford dealer sold me my new set of tires. Ford Motor Company or my ford dealer would do nothing for me. The new front tire was ruined because the Ford defective spring broke. I had to pay the total expense to include the tow bill back to the dealer that not only sold me the car bur just put on the new tires. Had I been on the road I probably would not be here now. I had to wind the spring out of my tire before it could be removed. Must be some peopld have to be hurt or killed before Ford will listen. I have been a VERY loyal ford customer my entire life bur this makes you wonder!! This happened 2/1/2008
Total cost for tow, new spring and new tire was $465.00. (Lesss expensive than a funeral though)

I have experienced spring issues. Just before Christmas 2008, the driver's side front spring blew and shredded the tire. This Saturday, February 7, 2009, the rear passenger side spring blew and shredded that tire. Surely Ford should take responsibility for the bad springs. There are reports all over the web indicating that 2002 Ford Taurus owners have experienced the very same issues. Luckily, both springs blew as I was backing out of a driveway. If this had happened on the expressway, I, and and others on the road, could have died. It's clearly only a matter of time before the other springs go.
Over $400-$500 for each spring together with $120-$150 per tire. As this is my only form of transportation, it is difficult for me to go to work while the car is in the shop.

front springs broke on 2000 ford taurus. ford replaced them, but then the rear springs broke and they don't replace them.
rear springs cost me over $300 and a lot of work to replace them.

Ford Springs: While backing out of my driveway this morning, as I sat down behind the wheel of my '02 Ford Taurus, I heard an awful metal shearing noise and felt the front end drop. I just started to back out (I had to try to get out of the way of my wife who who needed to get around me in our driveway) when my tire exploded! A quick inspection of my front driver's wheel well showed me a snapped spring. The tire was shredded from the coil and the ensuing driving (I had to get the car in towing position).
This is going to be very costly!! The $125 tire which had little road life was shredded, the flatbed towing will be $100, the new tire, and this doesn't compare to the mechanic repair costs (looking at the 55 pages on Consumer repairs dealing with Ford Springs, I look to be lightened of anywhere between $300-$700!). Thankfully it happened in the driveway and not out on the roadways. There is no way that I could justify buying another Ford vehicle after paging through all these testimonials. Sad thing to say, especially in these hard times for our domestic auto industry!

I too own a 2002 Ford Taurus purchased from the City of Champaign where it was used as a city car. Last week when I started to back out of my driveway I heard a strange grinding noise in the left front of my car. Before I could pull back into the driveway the left front tire blew and come to find out the coil spring had broken and blew out my tire. I am not working and cannot afford the $500 plus that it is going to take to replace the springs, and after reading the rest of these posts apparently ALL springs on the car along with the cost of the tire that the coil breaking caused. If anyone is interested in starting a class action suit please contact me!!
Broken coil spring resulted in shredding of my left front tire.

My wife was on her way to deliver food to an 81 year old whom just had surgery. My wife was pulling out of the driveway on February 3, 2009 when she heard a load bang. She thought it was a piece of ice she had run over. She started to go onto the freeway when she noticed the driver side tire going flat. She then pulled off to the side and called me at work letting me know the tire blew. I left work and replaced the blown tire with the spare.
Following my wife to a Sears Tire Center I decided to replace all 4 tires. The attendant stated it would take about 1 hour and he would give us a call when done. I then drove my wife to where the food had to be delivered and soon after received a call from the sears attendant. The attendant stated he the drivers side front spring had busted and was pushed into the drivers side front tire.
I had to pay approx. $1400.00 dollars for new tires, springs and struts, as well as a new tire alignment. This issue of springs breaking on Ford Taurus and Sables has been on going and Ford still will not do any recalls for 2002 and 2003 models. The only recall was for 1999 to 2001. Time to get a Class action started.

X-mas Eve of 08 I was backing out of my driveway(small city driveway)I heard a loud bang. I thought it was a gun shot. It was my tire. I had to jack it up and throw the doughnut on it and seen the spring had broke and punctured the tire. Glad I was doing about 2 miles an hour. The car was bought for my 16yr old daughter as her first car....Im afraid of what could have been!
Well the local auto lab say via the phone 600 with out inspection on the fronts. Reading this makes me think all four should be checked.......

My 2002 Ford Taurus's right front spring broke and punctured the right front tire. Fortunately the car was not on the road, but was in my driveway.
I had to have the spring, and tire replaced (and pay labor) at my expense.
Concerned the other springs might fail with worse consequences.

Cornelius of Ontario, NY (12/15/08) I have a 2003 Ford Taurus with 85,000 miles on it. On December 15, 2008, I started to back out of my garage when I heard a loud snap, and then a scrapping sound. I looked at the front of the car and saw the front left tire was flat, so I proceeded to get the jack out to change the tire. I removed the lugs and tried to remove the tire, but I couldn't. I didn't know at this point that he coil spring had punctured the tire. I gave it a good yank and it came off the wheel. I could then see the broken spring.
I managed to get the spare tire on the car, and I drove it to a nearby repair shop, where they replaced both front springs. The mechanic asked me if I contacted Ford, and I told him no. He said that he's seen a number of these problems with the Ford Taurus, and couldn't figure out why Ford hasn't recalled them by now. My total repair bill was $469.00, but that's not my main concern. What if I had been going 65 or 70 on a freeway, and this spring had broken then? This could very easily result is lose of life! I wonder if Ford would pay attention then? If there isn't a class action lawsuit for these problems, why isn't there?

In December 2008, my 2002 Mercury Sable experienced a spring failure that resulted in a punctured left front tire.
$1200 repair bill that included a new tire.

I have a 2003 Ford Taurus with about 80,000 miles on it. This morning I opened the car door and sat in driver's seat. I heard a loud snap. Since it is so cold out, I ssumed some ice fell off the under carriage. I backed out of the drive and started up the street and realized something did not sound right. My husband took the car to our mechanic and found the coil spring had busted and when it did, it damaged my tire beyond repair. My car is in the shop for at least another day (and $600) for repair. I called the place where I normally buy tires and I told them the spring broke (before I even told them who I was or what kind of car) and they immediately asked if I had a Taurus. I asked how he knew and he said it is a common problem with these cars. What the
f%@k is Ford waiting for?? As others have stated, this could have happened while I was doing 70 mph on the freeway and it could have cost me my life! Is there a class action suit on this?
we have to put out $600 to have this repaired.

2002 Ford Taurus. While driving in a snow storm in Jan. of 2009 a loud bang was heard from the front left of the car. Burning rubber was smelled soon afterward. After pulling into a gas station and changing the front left tire with the donut spare. At that time I could see broken pieces of suspension. I had the car repaired at a shop. Replaced the left front coil spring and when the right front spring was inspected it was found to be broken also. Total cost me of $489.00
Left coil springs broken. Left tire destroyed by the spring. Parts of the suspension. I don't know the correct name foe them at this time.

Have 2000 Ford Taurus with broken rear spring. Car was driven very little and has low miles. This is a big problem with Ford Motor Company. Why won't they admit they have defective springs on these cars? This is a quality, value and safety problem that Ford Motor Company chooses to ignore rather than fix.
Car could not be driven and cost $600.00 to replace the rear springs. I don't like fixing defective problems that are not my fault or responsibility. Own up to your problem Ford Motor Company.

While backing out of my parking space at work (8mph) I turned my sterring wheel to back out and heard a pop. Thought I just ran over something like a 2 liter bottle. Noticed my front right end looked like it was low. Got out and looked at my front right tire. It was completely flat. Just thought at that point that it was only a flat tire. My brother-in-law came to change my tire and did not noticed that the front spring had broken until he went to lift the tire off he felt the gapping hole in my tire. T
he spring had broken and punctured the tire in one spot, and caught and sliced the tire half way around the tire. I can only imagine the outcome of this happening while driving 55 mph. Being the mother of a 5 year old, and 2 year old I thank god that they were not with me when this happened, and am so fortunate that I was only backing up in a parking lot. This could have easily ended in a fatality!

2000 Ford Taurus Left Rear spring broke, did not damage tire butI was lucky.

2002 FORD Taurus was in for yearly inspection and mechanic discovered a broken rear spring, replacement was around $150. After checking various websites found this is a common and dangerous problem.IF YOU HAVE A TAURUS ,GET THE SPRINGS INSPECTED IMMEDIATLEY! These should be recalled at once!

I have a 2002 ford taurus and while it was park in my barn I heard a pop sound and my driver side tire (which was only 2 weeks old) went flat. I found the coil spring just snapped, and ripped a 6 inch gash in my new tire. good thing I wasn't driving... My car had 106,000 on it. No wonder wants to buy american cars!!

2001 Ford Taurus rear driver's side coil spring broke. Told not to drive by dealer or it would puncture my tire and the repair cost would be $600.00+. In Michigan and I have have to get it repaired or pay other bills I will have to park it and take a bus.

Nice. I just had my front spring break. Brand new tire to shreds. Blamed my daughter for hitting something. Now I see there's a big problem after reading the 100's of others with the same problem. Ford bites. Never again. I will go back to Toyota and Honda. Let Ford fail. Why should we pay out billions to have these guys stay in business to put our lives on the line with this junk.

Went to back up my 2002 Ford Taurus with about 119,000 miles on it in my driveway. I heard a loud bang and stopped the car (traveled 10 feet). I got out and found that I had 2 flat front tires. I called AAA to have the car towed and the tires repaired or replaced. The tow truck operator told me it was not my tires that were the problem, even though they were flat. He showed me that both of my front springs had broken in half and punctured my tires.
I had it towed to a local Monroe Muffler Shop. The mechanic stated that not only were the springs and tires destroyed, the springs had also ruined the steering linkage and tie rods. The total of all of these repairs was about $1,300. I called Ford's national customer service line (800 number) to find out if there was any remedy for this since it is obviuosly a common and recurring problem that they have not fixed despite the recall on their 1999-2001 Taurus models.
I am especially concerned because this problem can cause a serious accident, injury and death and is a dangerous safety risk. I normally drive 50 miles to work each day on an interstate highway at 65-70 mph. Had this occurred during one of these trips, I and others could easily have been seriously hurt or killed.
As stated above, had to have about $1,300 in repairs made due to Ford's faulty parts and design. Thank god no injuries since the problem occurred in my driveway.

2002 Ford Taurus front driver's side coil spring broke while backing out of parking lot and punctured a brand new tire on Dec 26, 2008. Local Ford shop replaced both front springs on Dec 30, 2008. Today we noticed that the back right side tire was making noise. We took the car to Walmart where the tires were changes just before Thanksgiving. They told me that the spring is broken for this tire as well. I purchased this 2002 model car on October 1, 2001. I am not sure how this car is technically different than the 2001 Taurus cars as Ford has agreed to fix spring problems for 2001 cars.
I spent $272 plus the expenses for a new tire. I am sure it is going to cost me the same for the rear springs as well.

Driver side coil spring broke. Ford knows about it too but they will not recall 2002 models.
When the spring broke it cut the tire causing rapid deflation. My son was driving home from work and was able to control car but it could have been tragic. Now I will have to shell out 500.00 to fix the car.

2003 Ford Taurus front driver's side coil spring snapped while backing out of driveway and puncturing and ruining a brand new front driver's side tire which I had bought just a few months ago. I'm lucky it hadn't happened 7 miles later while I was going down the highway at 65 mph!
Damage will run us over $400 'til we get everything replaced and the new tire purchased and put on. Everyone is recommending replacing all four springs! Very expensive at $2-300 a piece!

2002 Mercury Sable front spring broke, bursting the tire. I'm thankful it happened in my garage and not on the road. It shredded my tire. I ended up buying 2 new coils and a new tire.
I have been housebound for 4 days as a result...just thankful that nobody got hurt. I don't have my bill yet but it's estimated to be at least $700.00

Driver side of front coil spring on my 2002 Ford Taurus SE broke on Dec 23rd while the car sat on the garage. The coil spring punctured on my brand new Hankook winter tire beyond repair. Had to tow the car to the nearest Ford dealer who told me that there was no recall for this problem.
The dealer estimated repair cost to be $608, not including winter tire which I paid $ 150 each plus shipping (bought on-line) and balancing. Due to holiday season, the car is still waiting on on dealer parking lot for repair.

The 2002 Taurus my son drives had the left coil spring break and ruin a tire in 2007. Just this week the right side front coil spring broke and ruined that tire. When it was being repaired they noticed that both back coils are cracked and needed replaced also.Just lucky no one has been hurt yet from this. Ford needs to recall these cars and address this problem right away. So far we have over $1400 in repair and towing expense.
unsafe at any speed

Front driver side coil spring as I put the car in reverse to back out of the garage. Immediately punctured the tire, luckily I was able to still put the garage door down. I agree this should have been recalled as almost 1 year ago to the day, the passenger side coil spring broke! I spoke with the repair shop & they said this is something that should not occur let alone twice in 1 year.
Repair will range between $400-900 depending upon the struts, plus the cost of the tire - $100 +/-, plus the tow. When I add in last years coil which cost by $450 with repair, tow, tire. This will run $1000-$2000 with in a year on one item.

My 2002 Ford Taurus spring broke and punctured my driver's front tire. Thank God I had just left the driveway and was not on the expressway! I have read that a recall included cars up to 2001, which leaves me out. The repairs will cost over $400. Someone will have to be killed before Ford does a recall!
$400 repairs that I cannot afford.

Like many others have already complained, my 2002 Ford Taurus had the passenger side front coil spring break and puncture my tire. Thankfully it happened as soon as I started to take off. Apparently Ford is going to wait around until someone gets killed before they address this problem.
Repair costs and tow bill is going to cost me over $830.

Front coil spring snapped on my 2002 Mercury Sable. I see all kinds of complaints regarding this-we need a recall. I just got off of the highway where I was doing 75mph and it snapped, gouging and blowing my tire on the exit ramp. What a needless close call.
I do not know what the repair costs are going to be, but with a new tire I am sure it will be several hundred dollars.

Dec 13th 2008. At freeway speed, the left front coil spring made a lould bang. The left front of the auto dropped immediately. There was a strong smell of burning rubber as the spring damaged the tire. Called a wrecker and had the vehicle towed to the Ford dealer. They tell me this problem is not a recall and that I need to pay the replacement of this part. Looking that the large number of reported instances of this problem, it is apparent that Ford needs to replace defective springs before there are fatalities.

Left front spring broke on our 2002 Taurus with only 63000 miles. It cut through the tire. the car had no spring shields and Ford has known for awhile that they have this problem. What is it going to take some deaths because of this before they respond to the problems on the 2002. Guess colaterial damage is their motto.
Total cost for repair was 550.00.

My front coil spring snapped today, shredding a brand new tire. The tire company will more than likely not replace it since there was nothing actually wrong with the tire. It's going to cost over $200 to get fixed...
It's going to cost over $200 to get fixed. Plus, potentially having to buy a new tire and getting it towed to Jackson, MI.

We own a 2001 Ford Taurus 3.0L four door sedan. We lived in NJ until July 2006, from the time the car was leased/purchased new. When we brought the car in for Maine inspection on 2/27/07, we were told that the rear coil springs were broken. It cost us $742.93 We are not aware of any recall on our model since we called Ford's 800 number to report our address change and were told our model had no outstanding recalls!

Life is tough enough without Ford (which by the way, we have driven Fords for over 45 years) making it harder on the average family. We may get the car fixed, sell it and go with a different manufacturer for the first time since 1962. Immediate fear when the strut broke and then swerving to get the car parked. Frustration and the cost of repairs. The extra cost to rent a vehicle in order to go on our long-planned vacation. Now...the mental anquish after reading all the reports of rear strut break and damage, to the car and emotional and financial to the families. This is unacceptable.

My left rear coil spring broke a little over a year ago. Luckily, I have not had any major damage but still need to have my coil spring replaced.

As I reported earlier, I had coil spring failure on my 2002 Ford Taurus. I recently found out on the NHTSA site that Ford added the 2003 model to the recall in effect for the 1999-2001 model years. I can't imagine why they omitted the 2002 models. (perhaps fears that they would go broke repairing or repaying for all those repair bills?) Mine was around $1000.00 and there are over 250 other 2002 owners with the same complaint on the NHTSA website which comes to a quarter million dollars and that's just to fix the cars I have read about not to mention those that haven't broken down yet. Also it seems that 250 is low because that comes up under a specific search for the front springs. When checking for general suspension problems (front and rear) even more occurrences show up. It's surprising to me that there aren't more injuries/fatalities involved since, luckily, most of the time the spring fails and pops a tire when the car is parked or moving at slow speeds.

I am in the process of getting my 2002 Ford Taurus inspected. My mechanic told me to call Ford to see if there is a recall on the rear wheel coil springs because they need replaced. Ford said that there is not a recall. My mechanic said it is not safe to drive the car in the condition that it is in because it is extremely close to rubbing the rear tire. In reading this website it seems that this is a pretty common occurance for the 2002 Ford Taurus.

I had my front driver side struts snap and pop my tire on my 2003 Ford Taurus yesterday morning when I was leaving my driveway. I had some relief when the guy from AAA came to tow my car away said he thought it may be recalled because this is COMMON to the Ford Taurus. I was thankful some of the cost may be absorbed my Ford. To my amazement I found out this morning that Ford has only issued a recall until 2001. BUT THEY HAVE NOT FIXED THE PROBLEM. I am disappointed at Ford for not caring about its customers. I had a baby in the car!!! HELLO this could have injured or killed my child or myself!! Times are hard for many families including my own and now I have to find some money to pay to get this repaired when it is clearly Ford's defect. I am really upset Ford has done nothing to protect its loyal customers.
I

On my 2002 Mercury Sable both of the rear coils have broken. I would like people to know that they need to submit their coil problems to the National Highway and Safety phone number: 888-327-4236 or web site: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.cfm Like so many others on this site I have encountered the same problem. Ford says that the problem must be submitted to nhtsa or else they will not place a recall on it.

Front left spring on my 2000 Ford Taurus broke when putting the car in Reverse. I don't think steel is suppose to corrode and break like that.

My 2002 Ford Taurus has 65,000 miles. In the last 6 months I have had to spend over $3,000 on it. Both rear coil springs broke and had to be replaced along with struts; same thing happend 3 months ago to front coil spring & struts. Camshaft snchronizer went bad; brakes and rotors had to be replaced several times; the list goes on and on. Help! WHY aren't some of these DANGEROUS things happening to this make of car under RECALL. I am reading more and moreo people havingi the same problem with this make/year of car.

1999 Ford escort, both rear strut springs broken. Both OEM springs were welded and broke at the bottom part of the spring. The springs had two diffrent diameters, the top portion was thicker in diameter than the bottom part. Poor design or a cover-up for a short spring, they just welded it together, bad idea...

2001 Ford Taurus, rear spring broke puncturing tire. Discovered both springs were broken and probably not recent. Spring finally shifted enough to puncture tire.

The coil sping on my 2002 Ford Taurus broke, when I backed up this morning 5/19/08 to leave for work it cut the tire. I was amazed to see how many people this has happend to.

Returning home from the airport on a busy interstate highway, my right rear tire suddenly blew out. I had to drive home(about 70 miles) on my donut tire. The tire was shredded and had to be replaced, when we tried to put the new tire on it wouldn't fit right and it was then discovered that the rear spring had broken in two places and that the bottom piece is what shredded my tire. My hubby kept asking me if I hit something because those springs aren't supposed to break like that. I almost think he thought I was lying. Now after reading all of the other complaints it makes sense. I don't have the money to replace all of my springs, yet I am worried about driving my car now. I have to travel on the interstate to get to work. I know it won't do any good, but I am going to call Ford and log my complaint anyway.

Backing out of a driveway, in my 2002 Ford Taurus wagon, I heard a loud explosion and the left front tire - which was less than 2 weeks old - literally blew. On examination, the coil spring had snapped and shredded the tire. If I had been on the highway, I would have had absolutely no control. After much investigating, I discovered that this is an ongoing problem with Ford and in fact there have been recalls for this problem, but NOT for the 2002. Trying to deal with Ford Canada is a nightmare. Mr. Nurse is incredibly rude and despite the fact that I have list upon list of this problem, he tells me that there is NO problem in Canada and it's just a coincidence that this happened to my car. Futhermore, he told me that it didn't matter how much I persued this, it will do me no good, as any correspondence will eventually end up on his desk, and as far as he is concerned, it is the end of the matter. As well, he told me that there is no way I would ever be allowed to find out the stats on how often this has happened in Canada.

I was out of town when it happened and had to spend an extra day while the car was towed and repaired. (The tow truck driver told me he had seen a half dozen identical problems with the Taurus in the previous three months!) The repair and a new tire cost me $716.88

Just yesterday I went to leave my house and there was a loud explosion and the front of my car hit the ground I was pulling out on telegraph getting ready to hit 55 mph. I would have been hurt very bad going that fast. And this happening thank god I was just taking off when it went. We called the dealer and they said there's no recall for this. And my car is a 2002 taurus and my tire was new the spring broke and went in to the tire. If I was on the highway I know I would not be here today. And I think some one needs to be held accountable! I'm not stopping here this is to large of a problem for it to be over looked.

2002 Ford Taurus broken front driver coil spring. Backed out of driveway and tire deflated by coil spring shredding it. Had car towed to dealer. Dealer said not covered under warranty. Phone Ford Canada and they said the same thing. I explained I have ESP for front strut and coil spring is part of it. They don't see it that way. I explained to them the issues with the 1999 thru 2001 recall. They said not same issue.

The two front leaf springs on my 2002 Ford Taurus broke.I was unaware of the problem until i tried to use the car. When i moved the car,i heard metal grinding and rubbing, followed by the smell of burning rubber.I backed the car back into the driveway to inspect it.I saw the front of the car was very low.I looked under it to find the springs were broken, one in 2 pieces.I had the car towed to my mechanics garage for repair. The mechanic replaced both front springs. It was obvious that corrosion had caused the problem.I called the dealership and was told there was no recall on the 2002 Taurus. The mechanic told me he has repaired many front coils on numerous fords.I thank God i was not driving downtown or on the highway,as it would obviously have caused an accident.

I took my car in for a check up and oil change when I came back to pick the car up they told me that my upper right coil spring is broken. I was scared to drive my car after that. I always take my car in for an oil change so this must have happened in between the last time I had an oil change, about 3 months. They said it will cost a pretty penny, and looking at this complaint site, I think Ford should have a recall on their coil springs. It could be a very dangerous experience if a person don't get it fixed right away. I'm sill scared. I called my mechanic so he can look at for me and hopefully won't charge that much.

Wow!! I was trying to find information on my 2002 Ford Taurus front, left coil spring, which had broken today, when I came across this website. This is amazing: how can this not be recognized as a recurring problem for recall? While leaving my driveway on my way to work I heard the loud sound of a tire blowing out and immediately saw that it was the left front side. The coil spring had broken about 6 inches up on the first coil from the bottom leaving the small piece fall to the ground and allowing the remaining spring in place to slip sideways and literally shred the tire sidewall. Sound familiar, Ford? Just a coincidence, right?

The front left coil spring on my 2002 Ford Taurus snapped causing the stabilizer link to break. It also nearly punctured the tire. There is a recall for models up to 2001. I feel the problem was not corrected for the 2002 model as there are over 250 complaints for this same thing on the same model, make and year on the NHTSA website. I was also told by the mechanic that one of the rear coil springs is also broken. I would like Ford to consider extending the recall to cover all models which have this problem. I have read it was due to the springs having very poor corrosion resistance in areas where salt is used on the street for ice and snow control.

Front coil springs broke on my 2000 Taurus, only I didn't know that was the problem until AFTER I had paid over $1200 to my repair shop to get them replaced and to replace the broken axle and the scored tire caused by the broken springs. Turns out this is an EXTREMELY common problem with this model. THEN after I get the car back I discover there was a recall on these cars for just this problem in 2004. I'm not the original owner, so I had no way of knowing this. Went to the local Ford dealer (Brondes) to try to get reimbursement for my expenses in repairing THEIR defective product. After a good deal of flack from service manager, I eventually got them to submit the bill to Ford. Got a check for a whopping $338 in the mail a few days later--this is maybe a THIRD of what this repair cost me. Needless to say, did not cash the check. Called Ford customer support in Dearborn. After a very lengthy call was informed that the $338 was all I was going to get--take it or leave it. They said I should have gone to the Ford dealer in the first place. I replied that there was no way I could have known what the problem was (not being a certified mechanic) OR that there was a recall out for that problem. I went to a reputable (AAA) shop, no fly by night place. The Ford reps' implication was that whenever any work was done on the car it ALWAYS had to be done at their dealership, just on the off chance that it might be a recalled item. What car owner goes to the dealer for every single service visit?? Now I'm preparing to go to small claims court to recover my costs, but what are the odds of a lone 60 year old grandmother winning against the Ford Motor Co.? I wouldn't bet on me, myself! I hope there's a class action suit against Ford. This defect could have killed me if a tire had blown when I was going 65 on the highway.

2000 Ford Taurus:In February of this year front left coil spring broke while driving, shredding the tire and breaking the sway bar. Ford replaced the springs on both sides and also the sway bars. They would not replace the tire and I had to pay for an alignment after the work which, they also would not pay for. During the time of the repairs I was told the struts were shot. Of course they are after all those years with defective springs, but ford would not assist with those either. Although there was a recall on the springs I still had to pay almost $400 for the repairs. Before the front spring broke I have a rear spring that is broken but was told by Ford there is no recall because the material used on the front springs is different then the material used in the rear springs. How is that when they break just as often.

I have a 2002 ford taurus no car problems. Driving it at a low speed 25 thankfully. All of a sudden a loud metal noise and rubber burning smelling. Stooped could not see anything in engine. Called tow truck ,the driver after lifiting up car to tow said it looked like the left front-end had problems. Service repair person called and it was the left front coil spring that broke and the cv clamp had broken and fell by the tire that why there was the rubber smell. Thankfully the tire was not damaged. I called Ford and reported this. They of course said they had not heard of any problem. My daughters 2000 taurus had the same problem but she was not as lucky her cost for the coil spring left one was $ 1200 for she had a lot of damage before the car could stop. My cost was $500. A year or so ago, both of the rear springs on my 2002 Ford Taurus (68000 miles) were discovered to be broken. The back of the car was scraping at times so I had the dealer check them. I had to pay to fix them. On April 10, 2008, I noticed that the front tire on the driver's side was flat. I tried to fill the tire with air but it was coming out as fast as I was trying to fill it. Then I noticed that the spring was broken and was sticking in the tire. Luckily it broke in my driveway. A couple days before, I was traveling at freeway speeds. I called the Ford dealer and was told there was nothing they could do as far as warranties or recalls. I found out that the 2001 and previous Taurus's did have a recall or extended warranty covering only the front springs. Supposedly they added a shield to the spring in 2002 and later years so the tire wouldn't be punctured. We could find no shield. When I got a new tire from the Goodyear dealer, they told me that the Ford Taurus was known for all the spring problems. I am almoist afraid to ride in my Taurus because of the inherent spring problems. We have been a Ford family since my dad had a 1936 Rord.

Rear coil springs broke in my girl friends 01 Taurus SEL and it could of injured my girl friend but I was lucky no one was injurd. Ford Taurus has falty spring front and rear everyone sould know! PS I was guoted 304$ to do the labor on the spings and the spring are over 100$ rip me off more plz!

I own a 2002 ford taurus i like many others had the same problem . i reversed about three feet heard a loud noise the frount driver side tire was flat the coil spring had broke and went into the tire . i called ford and they were no help . its to bad im a single mom with two kids it sure would help if ford would fix a problem they are responsible for !!

My daughter, 17, bought a used Ford Escort when she turned 16, from her grandmother. The car was a 1997, and had only 26,000 mi. on it. She was thrilled that her first car was almost like new, as she knew that her gram babied and took excellent care of it. For her 17th. birthday, I took it to the shop and had 4 (snow) tires put on it, and wanted to get it aligned. I was told that an alignment couldn't be done because the rear springs were broken. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT THIS WAS A COMMON OCCURENCE IN THE FORD ESCORT AND TAURUS.

Backing 2002 Ford Taurus out of garage and heard loud bang and the driver side front tire immediately deflated. Removed tire to have it replaced and found the tire impaled by the spring which was split in two. In reading the hundreds of posts on this very problem it is a complete joke that this isn't being covered under any recall actions. The 2001 is covered but not the 2002.

Oue 19 year old daughter started her 2002 Ford Taurus put it reverse to back out of the driveway. She went two feet when we heard a loud bang. The left front of the car dropped and the tire blew out. We removed the tire to find the left front coil spring had snapped and the sharp end of that spring tore a hole in the tire. This car has only 67,048 miles on it and is in very good condition. I found that the 2001 Taurus's were recalled for bad springs so I contacted Ford's recall center and was told there was no recall for this vehicle. I explained the vehicle was manufactured in January of 2002 (1 month after the recalled cars) and the springs were defective. Again, I was told no recall and to hold on to any receipts just in case there is a one in the future!

Within a week apart, the driver side coil spring broke on my daughter's 2002 Ford Tauraus.
2002 Tauraus- Coil spring tore through dust boot. In process of replacing the left axle, coil spring and strut, and boot.
2001 Tauraus - both coil springs and tires.

2000 Ford Taurus (58,000 miles)- While sitting in my garage, a loud bang shook the entire car. Took it to my Ford dealer, and he informed me that both front and one rear spring were broken. The front springs will be replace at Ford's cost, the rear is my responsibility. I would be happy to join a class action law-suit against Ford for selling this kind of junk. Count me as one EX-FORD CUSTOMER.

While backing up in front of my house, I backed up over a small piece of ice and my front driver side spring broke. The broken spring cut into the tire ruining the tire. I had to have the car towed to my machanic to be repaired. When the tow truck operator was putting my car on the hoist, he stated that he sees this happening all the time to Ford Taurus, When I arrived at the shop, the owner also stated that he saw this happening way too often. When I went to get the tire replaced I was driving a Saturn and when I told the manager of the tire store my story he said you drive a ford Taurus In the last 2 weeks since the spring broke I have had 5 people ( 2 tow truck operators,2 car machanics and 1 tire store manager ) tell me that this is a problem with the Ford Taurus. I am happy that the spring did not break when I was going down the highway at 55 mph. or I may not be here to write this report.

I have a 2003 ford taurus centennial edition. It only has 40k miles on it and already i need to replace the rear suspension. I really think that there should be a recall for the rear suspension of this vehicle since Ive seen it on many other taurus' and sables

After reading the many complaints here. I decided to post. My wifes 2002 Ford Taurus front spring broke, bursting the tire while it sat in our garage. This is a major saftey concern!!! I cant imagine what would happen if we were on the highway!! Ford was no help at all, even though this is a well documented problem with the vehicle. Please, let me know what else we can do to get these potential death traps off the road!

Last Friday I was driving my 2001 Mercury Sable to work when suddenly there was a loud bang under my car and it shook violently. I had no idea what had happened. I got out and looked all around but couldn't find what had happened. I kept driving but as I got closer to getting on the highway the more nervous I became about doing so. I then pulled into a parking lot and called my husband who suggested I look under the car to see if anything was hanging. I didn't see anything so I went on to work, driving on a major highway during rush hour traffic. As I was driving home that night I could hear a rattle coming from the front left wheel. Fortunately I already had an appointment with the dealer the next day for regular maintenance. I told them what happened and after they inspected it I was shocked to learn that not only was the front coil spring broke but both rear ones were as well! They went on to inform me there was a program through Ford that would replace both front coil springs but not the rear. How can that be???? What is the difference? Now that I'm researching the issue I find this is a common occurrence with Ford vehicles. Why???

2002 Ford Taurus Front Drivers side coil snapped. Of course this happens to be a model year that isn't covered in the recalls and of course my warranty expired last fall. I've also had the rear drivers side break and be replaced, luckily that was still under warranty.

I have a 2003 Ford Taurus SEL. I also have had to replace the left rear spring. My car has 61,000 miles on it and I baby it. It cost me 223.00 to get this fixed. If this is an ungoing problem why isn't Ford taking care of this?

I own a 2002 Taurus SES. It has 113,000 miles on it. It has always been garaged and never abused. Almost all of the miles on it are highway miles. I recently had this car in for its annual rust proofing. During this process, the mechanic noticed that BOTH of my rear end springs were broken and he recommended that I have it looked at right away as these springs could potentially pop right up through my wheel wells and/or into the trunk of my car! I had Firestone look at the vehicle this morning and they tell me that, not only are my rear coil springs broken but my front ball joints are loose and on their way out too. They recommend that I allow them to install a quick strut assembly to the tune of $765. OR, I could opt to have them install just the spings to the tune of $438, but I should bear in mind that the current struts could also go at any time. As for the front ball joints, they will replace those for $500. Of course, after they install the strut assembly, they will need to do a re-alighnment. This will cost $70.00. So I am looking at a repair bill of $1,335.00 - and NOW I find out in reading all these complaints that this is a well-documented on-going problem with the Taurus? And Ford refuses to acknowledge responsibility and do the right thing and offer a recall on these shocks? Even knowing that this problem could potentially cause a serious accident? Unbelievable. I also will NEVER purchase another Ford unless Ford makes this right and pays for the replacement of its faulty equipment.

I have a 2002 ford taurus sel I was driving down the highway after just putting on new tires and i heard a snap and i heard metal hitting the ground the tire went flat on the left front and almost lost control of the car. Now im told i need a new coil spring and another new tire on the left front. This is a very dangerous car to be using as a family car.

Rear springs and strutts failure. And front needs strutts. Contacted Ford Customer Service (an oxymoron), but said no known issues or recalls. They said nothing they can do at this time.

On Feb 3, 2008 my wife was backing our 2002 Ford Taurus out of the driveway when she heard a loud bang-type noise. She got out of the car and found a chunk of a coil spring laying on the driveway. On Feb 4, 2008 I brought the car to Apple Valley Ford for repair. They replaced both rear coil springs as they were BOTH broken. ($370) I knew the Ford Taurus's were having major problems with coil springs, but the recall ended with the 2001 year model, mine was a 2002. My car was also out of warranty. I asked for some assistance with paying for this repair because of the known problems associated with coil springs. The dealer said they could do nothing and instructed me to call region. I called region and they promptly told me that they would do nothing either. Needless to say, I will NEVER own another Ford product. I followed up with an email to Ford motor company asking for the address to the Ford president; here is a portion of that reply, Our President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Alan Mulally is not available to receive direct phone, e-mail or mail contacts from customers. Really nice to know that the privilaged few with the golden parachutes don't have time to deal with the lowly suckers like me that purchase inferior Ford products.

I purchased a 2001 mercury sable and had simular experiences involving the coil springs of the car. Unlike other people not just one coil spring break all four did. After finding out that there was a recall on the vehicle involving the coil springs I found out that they (Ford) would only replace the front two springs. They openly admitt on the website that these coil springs are defective when road salt comes into contact with the springs. I mean do they really think that us consumers are freaking stupid. The back coil springs are the same fing part as the front springs and still they refuse to replace the rear ones. So in the mean time I a full time collage student, will continue driving the vehicle in hopes of not slamming into a brick wall or an on coming vehicle for that matters untill I'm able to repair the vehicle myself. However, if a fault is OPENLY admitted by the manufacter of the vehicle and nothing is done by that admitting company shouldn't they be held accountable? Those foregin cars are looking real good right now.

We purchased this 2000 Mercury Sable (vin#: 1MEFM55S2YG608450) on 12/15/2006 from Phelps Family Ford Dealership in Perham, MN. I was told the vehicle had been thoroughly inspected by their shop as they do prior to selling a vehicle. After our purchase we put 600 miles on the vehicle, when we felt the front pulling towards the left so we took it into Tires Plus in Detroit Lakes, MN. We where then informed the vehicle had both lower front ball joints out and broken springs in the rear and front tires were also in need of replacement. I contacted Phelps Family Ford where we purchased it, and they agreed to repair the vehicle with us paying half the cost. However when the repairs were completed they forgot to put in some type of cushion on top of the rear driver side spring. When we left the dealership we had a really loud thump in the rear of the vehicle when bumps where hit or tar strips. When we returned home we called Phelps and they said to bring it back in and get it fixed right. They kept it for several days and called to inform me that the spring tower would need to be replaced if they fix it. They said that it would be very expensive and it would be okay to operate the vehicle the way it is with out damaging it. After talking to Detiot Lakes Ford Dealership I was informed that the repair handling of the Ford Dealership in Perham was very shoddy and should have been done right, and with all the problems Mercy has had with the Sables springs that it is asking for more problems with not fixing it. I then called Phelps and was advised the cost would be around $1300.00, that I would be liable for. I can barely afford the payments let alone more repairs on this vehicle. I bought this vehicle at what I thought was a high book value but I felt it would be a good investment considering the shop had thoroughly inspected it and found nothing wrong. What can I do to solve my dilemma.

Front left coil spring failed on my 2002 Mercury Sable. Fortunately I was in the driveway. Took out the tire, strut & brackets, and some expensive plastic parts that i can't recall the name of. AND, four years ago before I knew this was a CHRONIC issue, the same thing happened with my 1998 Taurus - no strut damage that time.

I have a 2003 Ford Taurus SEL. I was sitting in my car getting ready to back out of my driveway. I put the car in reverse and instantly heard a loud snap. Immediately the front of my car leaned down on the front drivers side. I went out to look and the coil had snapped penetrating my front drivers side tire. Needless to say I had all I could do to get the tire off. I contacted the Ford Dealership where I had bought my last five Ford vehicles from and was told that the recall was for earlier models and did not include my year vehible. I don't see where Ford made a change in the springs from previous models and was only putting gaurds on so that if the spring did break it wouldn't damage the tires. I can see from this website that this is a problem that is well documented by Ford and one that can lead to serious injury - even death, but Ford has failed to recognize this issue due to cost of repairs/replacement. This is unprofessional and not in the best interests of the safety of the consuer.
I

Wife was driving her 2002 Sable. Rear coil spring, driver side, failed and was rubbing tire. She took the car to Ford dealership in Lancaster, Ohio.

My 2001 Ford Taurus SES snapped its front passenger side coil while I was turning into a busy major highway. I was with my husband & neighbor & we all heard a giant SNAP. I took it into my local mechanic who advised me that the spring coil & broken & that it was a common problem in the Ford Taurus. My mechanic advised that a protective shield device had been installed on my car or else the tire would have been punctured. He quoted about $570 to replace both springs. I called the dealer & was happy to hear that there was a Recall and that this repair will be covered by Ford. I
.

The rear suspension coil broke off at its base and gouged out my wife's tire as she was driving. It's unfortunate that Ford never recalled this piece. It would have been nice to know that we were buying a car that could have potentially killed us.

I have a 2002 Ford Taurus SES and my rear passenger coil spring broke in 12/2006 (100k)and the front driverside coil spring broke in 12/2007 (mileage 120k). Neither time was it under warranty.

2001 Mercury Sable taken to Goodyear Service Center for NYS Inspection. Informed left rear coil spring is broken. Suggested replacing both rear springs and struts with quick struts for $1167.00. Service Manager informed me this is a very common failure that Ford is very much aware of.

I was driving locally in town with my children in my 2000 ford taurus when I was unable to turn my car very well. I was close to my independent mechanic and therefore took my vehicle there to be looked at. My front springs had broken and broke my struts and tie rods which I had all replaced by my mechanic. After a search, my mechanic informed me that he found a recall on my vehicle for faulty front springs and gave me copies of the work done to my car to turn in to Ford for reimbursement. Multiple calls and letters were sent and I was informed that my springs had been replaced with the previous recall but the warranty on the replaced springs had expired. Further research resulted in finding that the springs were not replaced from the recall for they were not broken at the time and they replaced the spring guards only. Further communication with Ford now resulted in a supposed policy and program for recalls to have their automobiles taken to a ford dealer only for repairs of recall items so no reimbursement is allowed. I have contacted the state's attorney general office who only forwarded my letter to the ford company who continue to deny my claim although I was unaware of the recall program and I still feel that since it was their fault, they are responsible. I am luck though for I normally drive the interstate to work and if this happened then, I may not even be here for my family.

On Sat evening Dec 29 I went through an intersection at approx. 30MPH with my 2002 Ford Taurus SEL. Mileage on my Taurus is about 58000. About halfway through the intersection I heard a loud shot like noise and then much grinding. I pulled over and could tell the noise was coming from the front left. I limped home and further examined the area and found the front left coil spring had snapped. The dealer had to replace both springs, the left axle and CV boot, and the aluminum alloy wheel which had been abraded. Total cost was $1160. I guess I should feel lucky I wasn't going 50, 60 or 70MPH where a potentially fatal wreck could have occurred. I'm surprised that Ford recalled previous years models but is still having problems with at least the 2002s and not doing something about it. Talk about a safety issue! One would think the NTSB (National Safety Transportation Board)would be all over this one.

The coil spring broke on the rear driver's side of my 2002 Ford Taurus. i know from reading through the complaints that this is an ongoing issue with the Taurus. This happened while the vehicle was parked in my driveway. Due to the amount of complaints reported on this, shouldn't there be a recall as the same one issued for the 2001 Taurus. This job cost me $459.00 to get repaired as the tow truck driver, after I told him it was the spring, towed it from the front end, so that the rear tires were rotating and caused me to have to purchase a new tire unnecesarily. Just really not happy about seeing all these complaints about the Ford Taurus coil spring and nothing being done by Ford to correct the problem.

Rear passenger side Coil Spring on 2001 Ford Taurus Sedan fractured, resulting in a portion of the spring puncturing the rear tire, causing a flat tire.

I went to buy new tires for my 2000 Ford Taurus and upon removing my old tires the service man found that my rear passenger coil had broken and worn a groove into the tire, almost piercing it.

My daughter was backing out of our driveway in her 2002 Ford Taurus when she heard a loud pop and the front end of the car dropped to the ground. It turns out that the front passenger side spring had broken and punctured the tire. Several days later, after putting the spare tire on, I was attempting to pull the car into the garage to replace the spring and strut. Seconds after putting the car in gear I heard a loud pop and the drivers side tire went flat ... due to a broken spring, of course. So, both front springs broke on this car at virtually the same time. What if my daughter had been driving on the highway when this happened? She drives 25 miles each way to college and back 5 days a week. This car is less than 6 years old and has never been abused. I contacted the Ford dealership and they told me that the 2002 models are not included in the front spring recall, although the person I spoke to agreed that they should be. He suggested I contact Ford Consumer Relations. I have purchased 5 Fords in the last 8 years but will never buy another if they do not step up and cover this ... for the sake of safety! I see that many others have had the same experience and I am now concerned about the rear springs.

While sitting in traffic in my 2002 Taurus the front driverside coil spring broke gauging my tire. I've had the car towed to the dealership and am waiting to see what they will have to say. Apparently this is a common problem and FORD will not recall the '02 models.

Ford Taurus, 2002, 108,000 miles. On 12/10/07, my front left spring broke while pulling out of my driveway. The force of the spring also snapped my sway bar link. I replaced both the front springs and struts with Monroe Quick Struts at a cost of $450. I did the labor myself. Both sway bar links also cost me $70 to replace. A week and a half later, driving home from work, going about 20mph around a curve, I heard a popping noise from my right rear spring, upon inspection when I arrived home, determined that the spring was broken. Thinking that my car has been sitting low for awhile now, I decided to check the left rear spring. Sure enough, that was busted also, and appears to have been busted for some time, as I was able to pull a piece of the spring out by hand, as a dentist would pull a rotten tooth out. The part I was able to pull out by hand was very rusted, telling me it had been in this condition for a long time, probably over a year.

I have a 2001 Ford Taurus SES with only 77,000 miles. The left rear spring broke while driving around town. The tip of the spring stuck into the tire and drilled a circular groove into the inner sidewall causing a flat. I was quoted $450 to get both rear springs replaced and a new tire. I just paid it off this summer and was hoping to drive it beyond 100,000 until the wheels fall off. I have taken excellent care of this vehicle so far and in my opinion, the wheels have fallen off.

I, like others, have had a very serious problem with all of the suspension on my 2002 taurus. I luckily bought extended warranty, which would have cost me almost two grand had i not bought the warranty. ford wouldnt even talk to me about the problem, said my ford warranty was expired. never another ford product will be bought be me!

This sounds JUST like many others...On 12/13/2007 Thursday Morning, (sure it was a standard midwest snowy morning) I was simply backing out of my driveway when, in the first inch, I felt a snap and the front driver side of my 2003 Ford Taurus Wagon dropped. I thought it was just a flat, but on Saturday I jacked it up and found the Spring snapped in half and cut through my tire.

I drive a 2002 Ford Taurus. This past Thursday, I was on my way to work when the front coil broke and nearly ruptured my front tire, which could have been deadly for me. Had it towed to my mechanic who told me this was a serious problem with my kind of car, and that I should call Ford to see if I can get reimbursed as this is a safety issue and should have been recalled. So I phoned Parkway Ford and they asked for my VIN#. They said 'sorry, can't help you as the warranty is only good for 3 years.' The fact that this is a design problem that could kill someone apparently makes no difference. Total bill was $330.00. Then the very next day, I turn on my car and hear this horrible high pitched whine and none of the gears would work. The transmission is shot! I am furious and disgusted that the transmission would go on a 2002 For Taurus. I'm calling the Customer Service line tomorrow to complain and I will continue to complain until they do something. My father always swore by a Ford, but unless they are willing to help me out with this, I will never buy one of their products again.

Coil Spring Failure on 2002 Ford Taurus while it was parked in my driveway. Found there is a recall on medel years up to 2001 but none on 2002 but is on 2003- determined by VIN number

I was the victum of the ford Tauras Tire shredder. 2003 ford coil spring shattered.Peirced my 4 month old tire.No recalls on this year of car.Bought new spring from dealer plus the new stabalizer bar( that was also damaged) Ford wanted $140 just to compress the spring. My Husband use to sware by this company. His whole family own fords. They just cant beleive the treatment we have had.It is easy to get buisness , But only the best KEEP it.

I took by 2001 Ford Taurus in for repai, low and behold the front springs had to be replaced under a recall but the back springs were both broken so I had to fork out $450.00 out of my pocket to replace these defective springs. I hope Ford didn't give them to the spring company and collect on defective material. I would like to have my money back and contact the company who made these springs- They have a manufacturing problem and we are paying for it. Does anyone know who manufactered these springs? Had to replacr tires, and struts My bill $1300.00. with labor.

The front left coil spring on my 2002 Ford Taurus fractured, puncturing/slashing the adjacent tire. The force of this fracture also shattered the stabilizer control link and destroyed the strut mount. Ford Motor Company has a recall program for this issue on 2001 Tauruses, but not on later models.

On 11/24/2007 I was backing out of my driveway and the front passenger side of my 2002 Ford Taurus Wagon dropped down and I heard a loud Pop! Towed car to Ford dealer and front coil spring broke and shredded tire. Upon inspection, dealer said the driverside coil spring was also broken. Had both coil springs replaced along with a new tire. Total cost; $690.00 I called Ford and they only cover the 2000 and 2001 models. This is a safty issue and Ford should add the 2002 models to the recall. I will be worried about the rear springs now!

My daughter has a 1999 Ford taurus. We took it in to have the recall fixed on the front coil springs, they fixed them but would not fix the rear coil spring that was broke. They wanted $450.00 to fix the problem this is unacceptable and I did not fix the rear coil springs . Now I have driven cars for years, I have yet to see any car I've driven have any coil spring break because of rust or severe use. This is an outrage that they can't cover their Quality problems in an honest manner, and fix the problem instead of covering it up. I'm sure Mr. ford would not approve of this issue.I think they need to fix their problem regardless front or back...

October 25th 2007 - I noticed the rear of my 2001 Ford Taurus SE sagging badly. Other people would ask if I had a lot of weight in the truck and I didn't have anything at all. I was going to inspect the rear shocks, I thought that they may have lost there charge and needed replacement. I never knew or previously heard of a possible harmful failure due to the rear coil springs.
.At this time I'm not currently driving the vehicle and I'm considering what I should do,wait or preform repairs myself. I went online to do research and found other complaints regarding simular failures. This is an obvious problem that should be addressed to the public and rectified.

Rear strut is broken on my 2002 Sable LS Premium.

2000 Taurus, well-maintained, very low mileage. Right rear coil spring broke. Had to absorb the repair cost myself just like everyone else, even though the rear springs are obviously just as defective as the front ones. This is the only car that I have ever owned on which a coil spring has broken. Safety issue or not, Ford should pay for replacement of broken rear springs just like they do for replacement of broken front springs.

2001 Taurus both front and rear coil springs failed Ford covered replacing front. No recall on back.

I own a 2001 Mercury Sable, about 3 months ago I found that a front coil spring had broken. This was subject to a Ford replacment program and they duly replaced the spring. Today I learned that a rear spring had broken and wrecked a tire. I went to my local Ford shop and was told that this happened a lot and that there was no program to handle rear spring failures. I was advised to contact Ford Motor Co. This I have done but do not yet have a reply. Looking at various web sites, this seems to be a very common problem which Ford need to fix before someone gets hurt

I have had 5 cars in my life, a 1992 and 1993 mazda 929, a 1995 grand cherokee , a 1997 saturn sc1 and a 2000 ford taurus the taurus is the least oldest but the only one with a broken coil spring in the front. I heard alot of people have had issues with the exact same thing, what is ford doing about this?

2002 Taurus, broken front coil spring. Coil breaks, punctures tire. Parked or at speed. Today I experienced the 'Good Morning Taurus Tire Shred' like several others have written about on this forum (and others) The front driver-side coil in my 2002 failed, punctured the tire and then opened it up like a can of tuna as I tried to leave for work this morning. All in 10 feet of my driveway. (The tire was not flat when I got into the car.) Will call Ford tomorrow for a long run around that gets nowhere, and then I will likely replace myself. Wonderful way to spend a summer weekend. Would really be nice to see the 2000-2001 coil recall extended to 2002+, but I agree, they won't likely do that until enough lawyers threaten. It's all about statistics. I'm a lifelong Ford guy, but this is pretty low...

Bought 2001 Ford Taurus SES in March of 2006 with 65,000 miles on it. Driving on city street, turning corner, heard loud ping from under car. Piece of right rear coil spring fell out onto pavement. Retrieved piece of spring for investigation. Had mechanic inspect for safety and learned that left rear coil spring is also broken. Currently have 77K miles on vehicle. Ford recall is for front coil springs if they break. Obviously rear coil springs have same defect but are not covered. Repairs, replacement of rear coil springs will cost me in neighborhood of $900. Ford should be held accountable for this common defect. It would be far less expensive for them to replace all defective coil springs than to pay lawyers and settlements for all the people that are being injured or killed in the affected vehicles. Lesson learned: don't buy a used Ford Taurus or Mercury Sable. Better yet, don't buy a Ford. Let them go bankrupt and shut down the rest of their plants. Quality and safety are not job 1 at Ford.

2001 Taurus SES 99600 miles. Recall-repair front spring covers-no damage. Back springs broken & replaced (at own expense)at above listed mileage. Discovered when replacing tires & struts - no damage (Except to wallet).
Don't know if the front coils were replaced under the re-call, but why aren't the springs replaced all around (in the re-call), if it's a known hazard? Would like to be kept informed regarding the status of this situation.

I purchased a new 2000 for taurus and as of this date 6/18/2007 i have had to replace the tranmission, struts on front and now my engine needs a head gasket. All of these proplbem happened w/in the last 3 years and cost my family alot of money that we do not have. I bought the taurus new so i would have a good safe vehicle for my family. however i am not happy with my ford. I do not think i will ever buy another ford product again. I take very good care of the vehicle inside and out.

Well i am another of the unlucky ford truck owners. my 2000 f-150 w/ the triton pos engine spit the #5 plug today on my way out of town. i have been hearing a light ticking noise that started about three weeks ago and then monday it suddenly quit i thought ok, well thats a good thing and then today it blew a plug, i guess i am lucky i have 147,000 miles on her but i am not going to fix it as i see here thats its too much money for a problem that will happen again. i would rather spend that 3000+ dollars on a down payment of a toyota tundra !!! ford needs to seriously face their customers and fix the problem. i if it caused the ford company to go bankrupt then so be it. this is their problem that they know about and are not willing to fix it. i will never buy a ford ever again !

My 2002 Ford Taurus is in tip top shape, or so I thought. While driving in a low speed area my front tire sounded like a gun shot then the car fell to the ground. The mechanic said they cannot believe that this could happen. With such a great site such as this one, I new I had no chose but to replace all my coil springs, because I fear for the safety of my family. There are so many issues with this car yet Ford refuses to help. What can we do? I am going to see about filing a class action lawsuit to get back our money.

I own a 2002 Ford Taurus and the front driver's side spring broke while I was backing out of my driveway. When I took it to my mechanic, it just so happened another customer was at the mechanic and reported the same problem had happened only few months prior with their Ford Taurus. Luckily, the broken spring had not punctured my tire, as it did with this individual, who told me it broke and punctured their tire, while they were traveling on the highway. My mechanic told me they see this all of the time, but when I checked with the dealer, I was told my model year was not included in the recall. The repair cost me $550 (to replace both springs on the front end). With all of the recalls on this item, why is the 2002 model year not included? This is a major safety issue!

I own a 2001 Ford Taurus. Recently while backing up in a parking lot the left rear spring broke and dug into my tire. I realized there was a problem but couldn't figure out where. I drove my car home slowly. I was lucky I didn't have a blow out. I had to pay $700 to have this fixed. Ford has issued a recall on the front springs but won't acknowledge that the back springs are bad as well. Those of us that want to see Ford forced into acknowledging this issue need to log a complaint with the NHTSA National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Call 1 888 327 - 4236 or go to MHTSA.gov. If enough of us compain Ford might be forced into acknowleding that the problem is with the front and back springs. They have made it obvious that they won't step up and do the right thing by the people that bought their product. I will be trading in my car and never buying a Ford product again.

Literally minutes before my husband was pulling onto the highway the front passenger side spring just blew and shreaded our brand-new tire. I am going to call Ford back again to find out if they will change their minds about helping us out.

I own a 2003 Mercury Sable on which the right front coil spring sheared, rupturing my tire. My car has only 32,000 miles on it. I find it odd that there is no evidence of damage to anything other than the spring itself and the tire. If I had somehow caused the spring to shear, visible evidence should exist elsewhere. I've also had to replace the right side sway bar on this vehicle. Not the best quality vehicle in my mind. This is a matter of personal safety and someone is going to get injured if these issues are not addressed in the form of a recall.
It's costly to replace these parts and the labor associated with them (since standard warranty is only 3 years). These type of issues should not exist on vehicles that are still relatively new. I'm outraged and disappointed that appropriate measures are not being taken by Ford before someone is seriously injured or worse.

2002 Ford Taurus - Front strut spring broke when the car was backing up and blew out the tire. Ford knows this is a commom problem, but has not expanded it's existing recall to include 2002 model year.

Driving my 2000 Ford Taurus at 35 mph when I heard a loud clang, followed by a flat tire about 1/4 mile later. Left rear coil spring broke and fractured edge pressed against tire sidewall until it reptured.
As others have found, Ford will only cover the cost of replacing front coils that break, not rear coils. Obviously, the defect in the coil exists reagardless of whether it is placed in the front or rear of a vehicle, but Ford is only forced to recall the coils that break in the front. It is clear that the principle of doing what is right, replacing all the defective coils, takes a back seat to cost in this case. This will be the last Ford product I purchase.

I was sitting in my 2001 Ford Taurus, at McDonalds having breakfast when I heard a pop and the rear of my car dropped a couple of inches. I drove 6 miles home and took off the left rear tire and found a groove in it from a broked spring. The spring has been broken for awhile as both ends were rusted. I guess it finally decided to come out of its cup/nest that it is supposed to rest in and protruded into my tire. My wife refuses to drive the car now until the situation is resolved and my son also has a broken front coil spring on his Taurus that he is trying to get replaced by Ford.

I was going to work this morning when I noticed that I had a flat tire. My boyfriend tried to put air in it to no avail. AAA came out to change the tire and we found that the tire was slashed by the coil spring that was snapped in half. I immediately took it to the dealer where I bought the car. I knew that the 2001 Sables had a recall on the coil springs.
Although my Sable is a 2002, I felt that this should be considered part of this recall as the parts are defective. I only have 17,000 miles on my car, so we know it wasn't from wear and tear. They were going to fix it under good faith and charge me 20% plus the new tire. I called the Ford toll free number to ask them and didn't get a whole lot of satisfaction.
I didn't feel comfortable unless the other front coil spring was replaced so we settled on both front coil springs to be replaced and the tire. The cost, so they said, would have been around $445.00 but my complaints got me a bill around $151.00. I still worry about the rear coil springs after reading all of these other letters. There should definitely be a recall and action on these coil springs beyond 2001 models.

2 months ago one of our front strut springs blew on our 2002 Ford Taurus. Because the strut spring blew out it also shredded our tire, damaged the sway bar link and loosened the inner tie rod. Now, two months later, one of our back strut springs blew again shredding a tire and who knows what other damage because we are waiting at this moment to have it repaired.

2002 Ford Taurus SE has the drivers side front coil spring break, puncturing new tire, while sitting in our garage. No indication of any possible problems. I am aware of other 2002 Ford Taurus owners having the same problem, but Ford refuses to recall the 2002 model year. We have incurred high repair bills because of this happening. Thank goodness we weren't in the car when it happened.
Large repair bills, only had 46,ooo miles on our vehicle. We will NOT buy another Ford if this issue is not resolved.

I found both rear coil springs on my 2000 Ford Taurus are broken. I did'nt even notice until I removed my rear tires for rotation. One was cutting into the left rear tire!! Where's the recall? It seems to be a very common flaw with Ford's design!

Attn: Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable 2001 - 2002 Owners. I am interested in starting a class action lawsuit. I have a 2001 Mercury sable that the left rear spring broke in mid February damaging the rear tire and on 4/17/07 the left front spring broke. In both cases the struts have had to be replaced for the total of 565.74. Please contact me as ssauer@sbcglobal.net. If you are interested in a class action lawsuit, I think a lawyer will be interested if we get enough response. Please send your short story and e-mail or phone so I can contact you. I will soon be 71 years old and have put up to 200,000 miles on a car and never had to replace a spring or strut in my 55 years of driving.

My car was damaged when a coil spring broke and punctured my tire, broke the brake hose, CV boot, ABS sensor and stabilizer link. Even thought this part was recalled they would not replace all of these parts. All they would fix was the coil, stabilizer link and pay for towing.

Ford Taurus 2001 broken right rear spring. Found during 100,000 mile checkup tire rotation. Ford would not cover as warranty although if it were a front spring they would.(extended warranty of 10 years or 150,000 miles) The manufacturing defect is the same front or rear but the safety issue is far less with the rear springs. Inspected both rear springs and found that left rear was very good.

I have a 2001 f-150 4x4 xlt pickup with 36,000 miles on it. Within the last 2 weeks I've had to replace the computer and after replacing that, the dealer tells me the transmission is going bad. I took it to an independent repair shop and they agree. I don't think I should be having any problems for a truck only having 36,000 miles on it. And reading other Ford forum websites, I see I am not the only one. Ford doesn't acknowledge any problems with their transmissions.
I've had to pay at least $2,000.00 to repair a transmission that should never have gone out. It's obviously a flaw in Ford's design or workmanship, and they are refusing to compensate us for this at all.

left front &left rear coil spring broke shredding the front tire. the dealership replaced both coil springs and the strut on the left side and the tire after i complained about having to buy a new tire. the problem is the right front and rear coil spring and front strut sould also be replaced at no cost to me, even though the springs are not broken yet. as the car sits right now, the car is a rolling death trap, and the dealership admits to such, and tells me ford motor company will not pay for anything that is not broken. that is my situation!

we own a 2002 ford taurus with 53,000 miles on it. it is only driven back and forth to work and on maintained roadways. in february we could hear a rubbing sound at the rear passenger side of the car while backing out of the driveway and pulling forward to drive. on march 10 we took the car into suburban ford to have new tires put on the car because of a special they were having.
on the check list, everything was checked off as okay. around april 2nd the noise from the rear wheel was worse and we took the car to mr muffler to have the brakes checked. instead we were told the rear spring was broken and had worn a groove into the new tire. we replaced the struts and springs $650 later. the next day i went to suburban ford to have them look at the situation. they wouldnt do anything about it because we already replaced the springs with new ones . ended up buying a new tire. told us the spring was the problem for the groove and not a road hazard problem.
mr muffler put the doughnut tire on till we could get a new tire.what do we do next. i see alot of complaints on this spring issue and feel springs shouldnt give out when the vehicle is well taken care of. did ford purchase poor grade steel or inferior products regarding the make up of the material?
now we have to pay for it. i am not happy with how we were handled with this problem at ford dealership.

In early February 2007, the front coil spring on the passenger side sheared while backing out of the garage and the remaining piece of coil tore into the front tire causing an immediate blow out. Fortunately, we were not travelling down the highway when this happened.
Repair took place at my local garage by installing two new coil springs on the front of the car and new tires at a cost of over $800.

I own a 2002 Ford Taurus SE. In January of 2007, my passenger rear spring broke. I thought it was an isolated incident. Less than 3 months later, both my driver's side springs broke. 2 days after I got those fixed, my passenger front spring broke. 4 springs in under 3 months.
$1300 damage.

Both rear suspensions failed with broken springs in my 2001 Ford Taurus. My wife opened the car to get in and the rear of the car dropped. The car has 66,000 original miles on it. VIN 1FAFP53261A275986

I own a 2002 Ford Taurus SEL. As I was backing out of my driveway this morning the front, drivers side spring broke and punctured the tire, which flattened it instantly, and it broke the swaybar link.
I had just replaced the rear springs and struts last week to the tune of $500 + and now I need to replace the front springs and struts plus both swaybar links. These parts cost $424 minus labor. Plus I need to replace the tire. FORD just tells me that the vehicle is no longer under warranty. I cannot afford this. Within a weeks time I've spent $1000 on springs and struts when FORD knows very well that they have a problem.

I have had 2 specific problems with my 2006 Expedition. Two weeks (8/06)after buy the truck I had two fuel injectors go bad. The dealer had the parts and fixed it immediatly. 1/07, I had the truck in for an oil change.
The dealers service department called asking if I had oil all over my garage. Apparently, there both valve cover gaskets along with 3 other gaskets and 1 seal assembly were all leaking. The truck was brought in on 1/19, I got it back 1/24. 3/5/07 while stopped at a light the vehicle started running rough, within minutes the check engine light came on.
I drove it right to the dealer (4 blocks). Service called saying it was another injector I got it back on the 3/6/07. On 3/9/07 I noticed fluid on the garage floor. I took the truck to the dealer 3/12/07, service again called said it was the transmission output shaft seal. I have called Ford with my concerns with the truck as it only has 10,600 miles. I believe there was a problem at the time of manufacture.

I heard through a client of ours at work that the 2000 taurus had faulty springs and Ford was replacing them as the customers complained when they broke. Fortunately enough, I don't drive the car to work anymore (70) miles one way, but my wife does use the car. our vin # is 1fafp5529yg198390--what is ford going to do for us? I think is is very poor business practice to NOT send a notice of the faulty springs out to customers , but to wait for the complaints to come in.,.... we have been buying Fords for years now and will certainly think twice before buying another ford product

I was moving our 2002 Ford Taurus when a I heard a loud grinding noise. I thought it might have been the brakes. I took the car to the dealership the same day. March 17th 2007. I was told that a rear spring had broke and damaged the left rear tire. I had never heard of a recall and I thought a bad pothole might be to blame. I found out on the internet that this has been a problem with Ford/Mercury cars for quite some time. I was upset that I was not informed of this problem. I am scared to think what might have happened if the spring had blown the tire with my wife and daughter in the car. Ford is clearly at fault for not extending the warrenty.

I own a 2002 FORD Taurus SEL. Both rear springs broke at the same time. I contacted FORD Customer Service on Friday, March 9, 2007 to put in a complaint on this matter. They told me that the 02 Taurus does not have a recall for this type of problem.
I had to have both rear springs and struts replaced at a cost of $521.74. I can't afford this and believe that FORD should reimburse me for a problem that they know about.

I have a 2002 Ford Windstar. In Oct/Nov of 2006 I took the car in for repair due to a transmission seal leak. I was told the problem was fixed and returned home. 2-3 weeks later I returned to to have the SAME PROBLEM repaired again. Now 3 months later my car is again leaking transmission fluid by the bucket full (much worse than before).
If Ford was aware of transmission issues with the Windstar it should have made (and should make) every effort to correct the issue and not just leave it to the owners to deal with an issue that should have been addressed long ago. I cannot continue to keep dealing with this car as it has the same transmission issues

I have had 3 of the 4 coil springs break on my 2001 Mercury Sable. It has less than 90,000 miles on it. Ford replaced the front two springs in a recall after one of them broke. one rear spring has been broken for a while, with no apparent extra damage. The other one broke yesterday, sitting in my driveway, and when I moved the car, it damaged the tire.
I've heard estimates of over a thousand dollars to get this fixed, and it's clearly a manufacturing defect.I called the dealer and got no help. I've heard ford blames corrosion for the problem.
That's a red herring, as millions of other cars, like it's predecessor, have never had these problems. I had a 95 taurus with 190,000 miles on it, and no problems. When they redesigned those springs, the blew it, and they should have to pay for the replacement and any damage. Is there a class action suit I can join for redress of my problem?

Our 2002 Ford Taurus was parked in our driveway. I went to go get an oil change and as I started to back out of the drive, I felt some resistance. I figured it was a small mound of snow, so I gave a little more gas.
I heard a pop, followed by a strange hiss; and now more resistance. I got out and saw the front driver tire was flat. I went to get the spare and found it encased in a half inch block of ice (water must have seeped into the tire-well and frozen) Being Saturday and only 29 degrees, I brought the ice encased spare inside to thaw out overnight. Following day, I jacked the car up and was unable to remove the flat...that's when i discovered the spring had broke and slit the tire. I had never heard of springs breaking before. I had a 15 year old GM and while the springs were a bit 'soft' they sure didn't break.
Ford Roadside Assistance came and towed the car to the dealer. I was confident that the extended warranty we purchased would take care of this problem. I got the call from the service manager the next day telling me that the warranty DIDNT cover the springs. The repair would be 775.00. He also informed me that Ford had recalled earlier Tauruses for this very thing, but for some reason not the 2002 model year. Needless to say I am furious! With only 35,000 miles and 2 payments left what could I do? I paid it.
The total repair bill came close to 800.00 (a pair of springs and a new tire).

I own a 2000 Ford Taurus. So far the front springs have broken and punctured tires. Now the rear left spring broke. No wonder Americans are buying Hondas and Toyotas! Thats probably what I will do this year. I always try to stick with the big 3 but I dont think I will anymore.
This cost me $500 to have repaired.

My car was parked at the airport for a week while I travelled. When I returned the front driver's side tire was flat. Upon removing it, we noticed a gash around the inside in a circular shape.
The spring on the McPherson strut was sticking out into the tire area. Apparently the spring busted out when the car was parked and then when I backed up the car to leave, it sliced into the tire, making a large gash. I only drove about a foot, realizing the car wasn't moving correctly. That's when I got out and saw the flat.
I was fortunate not to be driving when this incident occured because it was very hazardous. When we called the local Ford dealer they said there was no re-call on this part. As it was, I had to change the tire at 10 PM in cold (9 degrees F, and a strong wind), then drive 90 miles to get home at about 40 mph. As it was a Saturday night there were no service stations open, nor would there be until Monday morning.

I have replaced the front struts on my 2002 tauras twice. I have replaced tires twice. The car was and still is unstable and makes noises as you are driving. It goes clunk clunck.. It is very nerve racking!
I am on a fixed income and this has cost me quite a lot. This has cause the pressure of being able to keep my other obligations paid on time.

My wife was driving our 2002 Ford Taurus to work in mid Dec. 2006. The left spring broke into 3 pieces on a smooth State Route, fortunately she is not a fast driver and was not hurt. One of the pieces punctured the axil boot and damaged the bearings and bent the axil making the vehicle unmanuverable. None of the repairs or tow was covered since the car has 39,900 miles. This is bad, we purchased the extended warranty on the power train which should have covered the axil repair and the tow. But since the spring did the damage and the spring is not covered, Ford would not cover any of the expense. I called the complaint number and reviewed the coverage with the extended warranty service. They all said, they agree with the dealer.

A fire started in our garage around 5:10 in the afternoon after the Ford F150 had been parked inside. There were no other vehicles in the garage and I had been in the garage myself at 4:15 when I left for work. My husband returned home in the truck at 4:45, parked it and went inside. Shortly after 5:00, my son smelled smoke and discovered the fire in the garage.
Total loss of our home: 500,000 dollars. Covered by insurance. We contacted Ford and corresponded with them, but to no avail. Of several insurance inspectors, the final one settled upon said that the truck did not cause the fire (although several others came to different findings). This finding allowed the insurance to replace the house.

I have a 2002 taurus with the coil spring issue. ford will not stand behimd there cars. my car has had 2 snap each time taking out the tire! one front one rear. I called them for a week and they arent going to do anything. so now I'm going to the net. anyone with this please go to the highway safty recall website http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/ and fill out the forms!

I am a US citizen living in the Republic of Panama. In 2000 I ordered a F-150 truck from the Ford motor company and had it shipped to Panama. The only problem the truck had in the following years was the AC. On Dec 04, 2006 at 2:45pm I drove the truck to work and parked it. 45 minutes later , it caught fire and the front end of the truck was totally burned and destroyed. The fire department got there in under 10 minutes but it was to late. I have contacted ford and they told me to contact the local dealer who has nothing to do with it since I ordered the truck directly from the factory. I am now dealing with the insurance company. It is amazing that Ford in this day and age can manufactor death traps and get away with it. This could have been much worse had it caught fire at my house.
truck will never run again. the whole front end is destroyed including the engine

Taurus purchased new in 2000, now has (low mileage)26,000 miles on it. Had to replace two front coil springs after front of car collapsed puncturing and ripping left front tire to shreds. Thank God, no injury to life and limb. Recall noted and repairs made. Now, 11/9/06, while changing oil found left rear spring coil broken and 1/4 inch from left rear tire. Wow, never will buy a Ford car again.

My 98 Ford Escort has both rear springs broken at 100,000 miles. This car has only been riven on the highway and not been overloaded. I have owned three other older escorts with higher miles and no broken springs. The local Ford deales said there is no recall or help from Ford on this. I also have a neighbor with a 98 Escort wagon and another friend with an escort wagon which I don't know year but both cars also have broken rear springs.
I

The front coil spring on my 2002 Taurus went last April, shredding the left front tire while I was in the driveway. Towed the vehicle to Ford, where the dealer fixed the front coil springs. I asked them to inspect the rear, and they said that they were fine. In October, I have the car in for brake service, and the provider tells me that the right rear coil spring is broken. Luckily, I have the extended warranty, but I am terribly concerned about the safety of this vehicle.
Cost me $50 in deductibles the first time, and probably the second. Left front tire was torn unbelievably badly. If I hadn't had the extended warranty, I'd be out $2,000 for repairs.

The right rear coil spring, on my 2002 Mercury Sable, broke causing my tire to blow. This occured on the NY State Thruway while I was passing a tractor trailer. I was lucky it did not cause an accident.
Had to replace tire, both rear springs. This is a very expensive repair. I have seen, on your wed site, that this is a common problem on Ford products. Something should be done.

I have a had the same experience as many others. The front spring went just as my friends and I were climbing in to go on a day trip to Boston. Luckily it broke just as we got in the car. Imagine driving down the highway and having something like that happen! Because of the recall everything was fixed. NOW I just went to get my car inspected and guess what, it won't pass! They say a rear spring, the struts, and a sway bar link is broke...AND NONE OF IT IS UNDER RECALL...Tell me how a six year old car with low mileage has such issues with important safety items! I was quoted $947.00 to fix everything and only then will they give me a sticker!

I just read through the broken coil spring fiasco on Ford vehicles. I own a 98 Ford Escort and both of my rear coil springs are broken. I'm sure that not everyone uses this site to report complaints and that there are plenty more people than cited who have these same issues (not of their own fault). My mechanic DID tell me that this is a very common occurrence on the Ford Escorts. I was quoted a minimum of $600 new parts/labor and they failed my inspection.

In regards to the 2000 Ford Taurus recall on the front springs...they put a cover on the springs which we had done and then by the time our car had over 150,000 miles, it broke...what a plan ...just in time to not replace...I think this was clever to prolong the springs until something happened....come on obviously the springs were defective from the start! someone needs to go after Ford for the springs that were used on these vehicles....there are just too many people with this same problem...Shame on Ford for looking the other way....We will never buy another new vehicle from them.

Both rear coil springs in my 1998 Ford Taurus collapsed two days apart for no apparant reason.

I have a 2001 Ford Taurus with 63,000 miles. While driving the left rear coil spring broke and cut a deep groove on the inside side wall of the tire and caused a blow out. I called the dealer and was informed that there is recall on the front coil spring but not the back. I see all over the net where this is happening to many people and Ford does not see it as a safety hazard. If this happened to me on my normal commute to work on the interstate I could have been seriously injured.

I own a 2002 mercury Sable with 58,000 miles and the right rear spring broke while it was parked. They have recalls on some springs including 2001 Sables front springs.

I brought my 2001 Ford Taurus SE to my mechanic for regular maintenance. I was informed when I picked my car up that my right rear coil spring was broken and that part of the coil spring had to be cut and removed because of the danger it could have punctured my tire.
I was told to research if Ford was doing a safety recall when I noticed your article on the NHTSA probe into the suspension failures.
I have been quoted approximately $400 to fix the rear coil springs.

I own a 2001 Ford Taurus. The right rear coil spring fractured ruining a tire. The incident occured when vehicle was parked.

I have a 2001 Ford Taurus. Last year they replaced both front springs because of a recall... Note the front right spring broke and went through my front tire... Now I am getting my car inspected and my service man is informing me that the rear springs are also bad... Ford is only recalling the front... Why?
To get the rear springs replaced will cost $568... This work is required to pass New York State Inspection.

The wheel coil spring snapped in half and punctured my tire on my 2002 Taurus.
While my car was parked in my driveway with the car not running, I hear an explosion. I find my car is resting on the rim. When I take the tire off, I realize that the coil spring snapped into my tire and completely demolished the inside of the tire.
I call the dealership and they tell me to come in because I will get a free tire and new springs for the front of the car. When I get there, they find that that the free springs and tire replacement is only for model 2001 and previous years. Sounds kind of fishy to me because though my car is a model 2002, I bought the car in October of 2001.
Someone should look into this for the safety of other drivers on the road. Myself and my family would be dead if this happened while driving. I am extremely concerned for the safety of others. I called Ford customer service who said they wouldn't do anything except report it.
The dealership said they couldn't do anything. I use their service all the time and they still wouldn't help me.

My 2000 Ford Taurus- both back springs and struts are boken and shot and need replacing. This is unacceptable maintenance with only 55,000 miles and only city and highway driving.

I have a 2001 Mercury Sable LS Premium and the left rear coil spring snapped in half on Easter morning. I contacted the Mercury dealer about recalls. There is a recall for the front coil spring but not the rear, is what I was told. The recall is for small fractures in the coil which will cause the coil to snap and could lead to punture in the tire. My complaint is if the front coil spring can fracture and there is a recall, then why not on the rear coil spring. I was told it would cost $170.00 per axle.
Punctured tire and loss of control the vehicle. No other damage to the vehicle and no injuries.

2001 Ford Taurus Rear coil spring broke going down highway - the broken spring just missed slicing the tire. I just missed hitting another car when I lost control. Told by Ford dealer only front coil springs are covered if they break (only after they fail, providing it didn't cause an accident where the car isn't totaled). Other garages say they see this problem all the time on the Taurus -- the front and rear coil springs.

I own a 2001 Mercury Sable with only 33,000 miles on it. The right rear spring and strut broke causing a deep groove inside the right rear tire. The repair shop told me this is a common repair on this Mercury Sable. The cost of replacing both rear springs and struts plus both front rotors is over $900.00 Plus I will now have to replace the right rear tire. I have lost use of my car for 2 days while it is being fixed.

I have a 2000 Taurus. The front springs both have broken, one causing a flat tire. Last year (2005) the car was recalled to install sleeves around the front springs just in case they ever break again. Last weekend, at about 80,000 miles, I was having the oil changed when we noticed the back right spring was broken with a pointed portion located about 1/8th of an inch away from my new tire. If the rear tire was punctured, I could have had one terrible crash.
I called the local dealer and he told me there was no program to cover the rear springs. Everyone I speak to that has a Taurus or a Mercury counterpart has had the same problem.

2001 Ford Windstar (Van) with ~86,400Km while in the driveway the left front spring broke puncturing the tire, bent the sway bar and fractured the flex brake line.

My wife purchased a new 1998 Ford Escort. It is now 2006. Her car had been making funny clanking bumping sounds and we could not find anything. So today when she brought it to her mechanic she told him to look for anything that could be making the noise, He found that both rear coil springs had fractured and advised us to call Ford and see if there was a recall for the coil springs. Ford said there was no recall but I should bring the vehicle to the ford dealer.
The Mechanic stated that the vehicle should not be driven since the broken springs could puncture the tires and result in an accident or injury, so for the safety of my family I told him to replace the springs. When I got home I searched for this information and found your website had information about fractured springs on Ford vehicles.

The right front spring or coil had broken and cut into the tire causing the tire to go flat. In removing the tire I noticed the spring had cut the whole tire. The repair costed over $450.00 and that was just the one side. i'm worried the about experiencing the same thing on the left side. I notice a recall on 1999 Taurus, but not 2002. This situation could cause a major accident if not corrected soon. Also, I noticed a review is being done on the rear spring/coil of 2001/2002 model taurus, but the front needs to be included. This could have been a real problem if it occurred on the highway and not in my driveway. Please investigate this situation immediately.

I bought a used 2002 Ford Taurus about 3 months ago. The mileage is just under 45,000. When pulling out of the driveway with my 14-month old son in his car seat, I heard a very loud popping noise from the front drivers side of the car. Upon further inspection, it turned out to be the drivers side front coil spring. There was a recall issued for the 1999-2001 Taurus, but Ford is denying any involvement in the 2002 problem. What if my son and I had been on our way home from daycare? The repair bill is $626!!! Because, of course, you can't drive a car with a broken coil spring that has already punctured your tire - it must be flat-bedded!

I've owned my car for three years and the car has about 100,00 highway miles. Two days ago, while the car was parked the passenger side spring broke and damaged two other internal pieces. There was no reason for this to have happen I did not hit a curb or a pothole or did anything that would have caused this to happen. The mechanic brought it to my attention that this should not just happen. The car is only 3 years old. I am scared to think of what would have happened if I was driving the car. The total cost of the repairs was $954.00 dollars.

I have owned two Fords that the front coil springs have snapped on. The first was a Windstar van which completely pancaked to the ground. Ford reimbursed me for the repair. The current vehicle is my Ford Focus which also had the same spring snap only this time Ford has distanced themselves from the issue. In both instances an accident was narrowly avoided but damage to the vehicles were costly. The most recent incident cost me $800.00 which Ford won't even reimburse for the defective parts.

Upon recognizing a “grinding” sound coming from the rear portion of the car (2001 Taurus SE), I took the vehicle to our usual, local repair shop. After much investigation, it was determined that both coil springs were broken near the rear tires, one of which was rubbing against the tire to the point of near destruction. It was advised that I take the car to a dealership for proper repair, and so I did. While discussing the issue with the dealership mechanic, I asked if this is a common problem. His response was a quick “no!”
Then he went on to explain that these particular cars had a recall for this very problem on the front end in 2004 and spring guards were installed to prevent injury. Coincidently, he has heard about a growing concern regarding the recent failing of back springs. Upon my research, it seems there have been more than 130 complaints to Ford Motor Company for this same issue. I feel fortunate that this problem was corrected before the tire burst. It frightens me to think of the consequences had I been traveling on the highway at 65 miles an hour with my grandchildren when the tire burst. As per your request, the repairs cost me nearly $360.
