The Focus is a nice-looking little car. And it replaced the truly execrable Escort. There, we said something good about it. Unfortunately, for way too many owners, that about exhausts the list of compliments. The Focus has so far set a record for safety recalls (would you believe 10?) and it may just be getting started.

Focus Recall (Oct. 2000)

It's unfortunate for everyone when an economy car has this many problems. It's especially rough on the poor customers, who presumably are on tight budgets and unable to pour time and money into keeping their supposed economy car running.

Here are a few of the more recent complaints:

Debra of St. Louis MO (10/01/07)
I own a 2003 Ford Focus SE Wagon. It has 45,000 miles on it, and so far I have had to replace the ignition, all four tires, brakes, and now the alternator. Obviously this has cost me a large chunk of money, and the car isn't even paid off! SOMEONE NEEDS TO START A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST FORD--it looks like the ignition problem would be a good place to start!

same problem as many other consumers. my ignition key goes in but will not turn. take it in and out several time and in will turn on like nothing is wrong with it. i have a small child and i worry where i will be stuck when it finally goes out; if i don't find a solution first. hey ford; how about a recall. or should we be complaining about the bbb for not having a recall! i don't think ford is the blame for the recall; just the junk switch. has anyone tried bypassing the key with some type of switch

2000 ford focus ignition key will not turn.

Andrew of Austin, TX September 27, 2007

Andrew of Austin TX (09/27/07)
I owned a 2005 Ford Focus Station Wagon and had a rear end collision while stopped at a light. As a result of the poor seat construction, my lumbar spine was wedged in the gap between the seat cushion and the back cushion during the impact. At the time, I had the seat lowered for comfort. Unfortunately, as you lower the seat, you also create a gap between the seat cushion and the back cushion, exposing the lumbar spine to that gap. This is where my lower spine was wedged as a result of the rear-end collision.

The back cushion has too little support to keep the spine from buckling and wedging itself, butt first. (Yes, my butt isn't THAT big) Now, the gap wasn't that big for me, only about an inch or so. Imagine now a rear end collision with a tall person sitting in that seat, where there is a considerable gap between the seat cushion and the back cushion, say maybe two or more inches. In a rear end collision, with the front brakes applied, the rear of the vehicle actually buckles upward and forward, while the bodies in the car move down and back, as in my case (since objects at rest [my body] respond only after the impact to the vehicle). Just watch all those dummy commericals...

This is a SERIOUS safety hazard if you manipulate the lever to lower the seat cushion. FACT: The european ford focus driver seat moves as an entire unit (both seat cushion and back cushion move together as a unit, never creating such a gap) FACT: The u.s. model is the cheap alternative to give the impression of a adjustable seat. Instead, the lever lowers and raises only the seat bucket portion for the driver, while exposing a gap between it and the back cushion. The back support stays in the same place ANOTHER FACT: All european models have headrests in the back seat ANOTHER FACT: Al u.s. models have NO headrests in the back seat TALLY: U.S. MODELS ARE UNSAFE FOR REAR-END COLLISIONS Focus your Whiplash, Ford!
