Sure, they look tough. But underneath that brawny exterior, there are lots of delicate little parts. The most disastrous common problem is low oil pressure, leading to engine failure. Although this is happening like clockwork, DaimlerChrysler is refusing to accept responsibility.
Not only that, the Durango tends to go through ball joints like a dog through a pound of hamburger. This is not only expensive but can -- and does -- cause serious accidents, as many of our readers will tell you. The feds have finally put the arm on DaimlerChrysler to do a recall but there's some debate over whether the recall covers all of the affected models.

Wes of Satellite Beach, FL August 27, 2007
Wes of Satellite Beach FL (08/27/07) In 2004 I purchased a 2003 Dodge Durango with 30,000 miles on it. I drove it for 50,000 miles and took good care of it, changed the oil, etc. At 80,000 miles the oil pressure guage started dropping to nothing then back. Soon it stopped altogether. My mechanic told me the engine needed replaced due to sludge buildup and that the engine in my truck has a reputation of building up sludge which distroyed the engine. He assured me that it was not from poor maintenance. It would cost me over 6000 to replace the engine. This Dodge now is an expensive paper weight. Why doesn't Chrysler recall these engines? Seems like a good attorney would jump on a class action suit against Dalmer-Chrysler. Any attorneys out there up for it?
Theresa of Neptune, NJ August 21, 2007
Theresa of Neptune NJ (08/21/07) '99 Dodge Durango at 57,000mi began having chronic stalling out problems in spring of '07. The stalling occurs in the middle of traffic especially after idling at stop light & turning left (so that car blocks intersection) but has even happened while car is going 45 miles an hour. NO BUS appears on mileage, everything shuts off and it takes 20-30 minutes of sitting (whereever it stalls out) before car can be re-started &moved.
Happens on days when the enviromental temperature exceeds 75 degrees. No diagnostic code appears when put the care is put on the computer and I was advised that problem had to get worse and produce a code before dealership or anyone else could diagnose the problem. Problem is powertrain control module (PCM)is malfunctioning. This major component is covered thru 8yrs/80,000 mi by federal law but because this problem was not diagnosed until after my 8 yrs had been exceeded, it is now my 800-1200 bill to pay (this after just paying for a headgasket for my Durango due to misdiagnosis by Neptune NJ's Sansone Rt 66 Dodge service who when the engine light repeated came on did not repair the intake manifold pan seal also known to be a problem with Durangos). I am still UNDER the 80,000 mi federal warranty mi which covers the CPM but because it's beyond 8 yrs from the date of delivery of the car, the 800-1200 cost to replace the CPM is now completely mine... Per the internet MANY '99 Durango owners are having this problem but it's only diagnosed once their 8yr/80,000mi has expired. Dodge at the very least should put out a TSB on this problem and the federal government should make Daimler Chrysler honor the PCM warranty per the car's mileage (8 yr time should not apply)... how does a PCM/major component go in a vehicle with less then 60,000mi? ... how do MULTIPLY '99 Dodge Durango owners have the same problem and the dealerships can't diagnose the problem(until the federal warranty expires) nor are there any TSBs issued? The reason is that it's not to Diamler Chrysler's benefit to diagnose this CPM problem in a timely fashion - because the longer the dealerships take to diagnose the CPM problem, the more likely the customer foots the bill because the 8 yrs that applies to the federal warranty on CPM will expire.
I contacted Diamler Chrysler and was advised by phone that there was nothing they could do since the 8 yr/80k mi is is a federal warranty & I also submitted an email to them &they responded that the vehicle in question has exceeded the time or mileage limitations of the manufacturer's warranty at the time the expense was incurred so there was nothing they could do. What good are these federal warranties if Diamler Chrysler is able to find a &continually utilize a loop hole (don't diagnose the problem until 8 yrs has expired)?
Gene of Tehachapi, CA August 20, 2007
Gene of Tehachapi CA (08/20/07) i bought a brand new '07 dodge ram pick up and at 4048 miles the engine overheated and left me stranded on the side of the road for over 2 hours. possible blown head gasket. i asked for a loaner vehicle or a rental, i was denied because i did not buy the extended warrenty, even though it is a manufacture defect, i had to pay for a rental car out of me own pocket. i just spent 50,000 on a truck and this is how i was treated. not only that i had to call in to work sick because i was on the side of the road and could not get to work in time. chrysler/dodge corp. will not help off set the cost of the rental car. even though the dodge dealer said it was a defect.
