Carfax - The Seller's Side

Consumer Complaints & Reviews

I am selling my low-mileage 2001 pickup that I purchased new and have scrupulously maintained. Prospective buyers checking my VIN # have informed me that CARFAX reports a serious accident for this vehicle, although it has never been in an accident of any kind. I have a dealer inspection to prove this. After a 2-month investigation CARFAX still maintains their report is accurate. They also refuse to divulge the specific source of their information so that I can attempt to correct this erroneous record myself.

After 4 months of attempting to sell my vehicle, potential buyers are still being turned off by this false CARFAX report. Ultimately, I will have to sell it at well below its true value because of their mistake and failure to correct it.

I have a 1995 Chevrolet Truck for sale on the internet (Auto Trader). This vehicle had a mileage problem when I purchased it in 2000. I explained this to the person interested in purchasing it. He ran a CarFax on it and it stated that 3 different mileage titles were issued to it in the period of time. They were: 12/10/2001 -- 87,990; 07/02/2003 -- 99,386; 12/18/2003 -- 87,990.

As you can see that the mileage on 12/18/03 is the exact same as 12/10/01. My license was re-issued on 12/11/03 with a mileage of 99,830. I do not know where they got the mileage from on 07/02/03 or 12/18/03? As I can clearly prove, their records are incorrect. CarFax has cost me a sale of my vehicle of $7500.00.

When trading my 01 Cobra, I found that Carfax was listing my car as having been in an accident when it hadn't. Now the person who bought is trying to sell it and is having the same problem. Come to find out, Carfax had the wrong car listed with my vin number. The car they had listed with the vin number was my son's - a HONDA. Don't these people check the validity of the info they receive? You could see that the car wasn't the same on the VIN description.

I want Carfax to be held liable for the information that they are giving out. The person it affects has to do all the footwork to fix something that Carfax sould be double checking in the first place.
