This company overcharges their customers by more than 100%. The national avg. for propane is $1.99 and yet Heritage charges $4.03 per gallon. Ridiculous! Stay away from this company. They overcharge and have no explanations why other than they want to be greedy. There are plenty of other reputable, honest and fair companies servicing the area. This has been occurring for several years. If you are lucky, they will give you a "special discount" and drop the price but that only happens in rare instances.
I used Marlen Gas in 1996 for tank and propane and paid a $25 deposit for the tank. In 2001 they switched the tank out for a smaller one and for the 17+ years I used their service I only paid for the propane when I took a delivery. They went out of business a few years ago so I found a new provider. Heritage delivered my propane and then about a year later, started billing me for a service fee for the tank lease since I wasn't getting delivery. I cook with propane. I don't use 250 gal every couple of years to cook. I have and provided paperwork that clearly shows my lease amount n/c and told them so. For over a year they continued to bill me, adding each quarter. They then turned me over to a collection agency.
Yesterday, they came by my house to shut off according to paperwork. I called them and left them a message last night explaining the situation again. Today, they came by again and left me a note with copies of my paperwork from Marlen Gas that clearly shows a n/c lease. For 17 years I was never billed a lease fee. When I had them deliver gas, they should have mentioned if I purchased propane from them. They would charge me if I didn't get a delivery for a while They are trying to get money from me from a company that went out of business. Maybe they bought the tanks, regardless, they neither had me sign a new contract. Their letter says they own Marlen Gas. If that is the case, shouldn't they honor the contract I have had in place for many years. Crooks!!!

Wow, I'm reading these reviews; are we talking about the same business? Maybe it's the location, but our experience has been just the opposite of unpleasant. They're wonderful! When they first bought out our old company and took over, things were a little rocky, but that's to be expected. Since they've been Heritage, we have been extremely pleased. We're on their watchdog service, so we receive automatic refills for our gas; we've never run out.
Their techs are the only ones in our area current on and capable of repairing our Rimi propane heater. We have only had to call for service on the heater twice in 11 years; both times they were friendly, prompt, competent, and reasonably priced. We anticipated a delay when we had to call during the holidays, but they had a repair technician here in 20 minutes. Also, we're on a tight budget, and they were willing and easy to work with on our payment management. We'd recommend Heritage Propane to anyone contemplating propane for their homes.
The entire experience with Heritage Propane has been one fiasco after another. From the inept customer service at install to the actual installation (they sent 1 install person attempting to install on a steep slope; I had to help him and it was dangerous for both of us) to the attempt to cancel service which I've been trying to do unsuccessfully for 2 months. At the age of 50 I have to say this has got to be the worst company I have ever dealt with. I recommend avoiding them at all costs.

I moved into a new house that had Heritage gas. I called to change the account into my name and from the first touch point to Heritage it was a disaster. They came out for site inspection and then didn't realize another tech was dispatched incorrectly to disconnect the gas. Their customer support people are completely incompetent and did everything incorrectly. How they stay in business I do not know. I moved to Ferrellgas and told Heritage to remove their tank a month ago. They couldn't even figure out how to remove their own tank in 30 days. If it is not out by tomorrow I am disposing of it. I would NEVER use this company...
I am a senior citizen who just gets by on social security. I had my bill paid in full and said that I did not want my tank filled till I called for more gas. This was in Nov of 2014; some time in April of 2015 they filled my tank when gas was at an all-time high here. I tried to find funds to pay but just couldn't. You know, heat, eat or meds. I offered so much on my account and was told no. I was pay it all now or get charged $36 late fees for every month that I did not make a full payment. I got someone to help me out and I paid my bill in full. I told the people at the Washington, MO Heritage Propane distribution point that I would call when I needed more LP. Now today I got a letter from them stating they want $150 contract termination fee.
I have had to deal with Heritage Propane in Tampa, Florida 3 times since 2013. Each time has been a terrible experience. November 2013 I ordered fuel and I thought they had delivered it. Well it turns out they messed the order up and never filled the tank and I ran out of propane on Thanksgiving Day and was not able to cook. November 2014 I called them to see if they could come out and check to see what my propane level was because the gauge was cloudy and underground and I was not able to read it. Of course they said that they would but there was some ridiculous service charge for them to do so (even though it is their tank that I rent from them). I told them NOT to come and that I would figure it out and that I would call them back to order propane if I needed it.
WELL, I just happened to be home one day and the truck shows up and the driver said that he has an order to fill my tank! Thank god I was home or they would have filled it without telling me. I had them only put in 62 gallons and I was not even out of fuel and that was over $300. April 2015 (5 months later) my stove is not working so I call them to see if they can come check the tank because I had just had them put propane in 5 months prior.
The guy comes out the next day and says I was out of fuel. I asked him to test the tank so while I think he is doing that he is FILLING UP THE TANK! When I asked him if he could fill it up halfway he said "Too late, I already filled it up with 200 gallons." When I asked what the price per gallon was he said "I have no idea, and I work for the company and still don't know". A week later I got a bill in the mail for $1028!!! I called them and they said they would look into an adjustment but have not heard back. I am converting to electric and they can take this crap tank with them!
We had been a customer since November 2000 without incident. Then seven months ago payment was submitted via my bank's Bill pay program. Heritage Propane denies ever receiving payment even though numerous bank reps have provided the Trace number and Confirmation number of the electronic transfer. The bank has confirmed the IP addresses were correct. The customer service reps at Heritage were at times rude and didn't seem to know what they were doing. Heritage Propane has placed a lock on our underground tank for non-payment. We have contracted with a new Propane company to have Heritage Tank removed & new company's tank installed. Price of gas much less than Heritage. We have every intention of contacting an attorney.
I discontinued in Oct 2014, still have their tank in yard after numerous calls and promises to pick up. Filed BBB complaint Jan 2015 and still no response to BBB. I am so angry and mad!!! Worst business I ever dealt with in my life!! WILL never refer anyone to them no matter WHAT!!
I don't understand the other posting here. My experience with Heritage Propane has always been great. The service is friendly, efficient, and professional. I can't change the expense of the gas but everyone I've ever dealt with at Heritage has been great from the person answering the phone to the delivery man. If you need a propane service, this is who I recommend.
I scheduled an appointment in August 2014 with Chuck at Heritage Propane in Boone to come and service a fireplace and service and move two heaters. He didn't show up or call on the specified day. Two days later, I got a voice mail from a girl in the office saying the workers had been tied up in fixing some leaks and I should call to re-schedule. I re-scheduled and have now spent another day waiting. No one has shown up, no one has called, and no one has returned my call to their office. They promised that my appointment would be the first one of the day, so that I wouldn't be waiting in vain yet again. Clearly, customer service isn't important, so they must have more customers than they need.
Heritage Propane let my gas tank run completely dry in Feb. 2013, despite being an automatic fill up customer, and then came on the coldest day of winter to fill up and price gouged me 1.50 per gallon over competitors prices on a 200 gallon tank maximizing their illicit profits. 4.79 a gallon is what they charged me. When I called to complain to the company about my 978.00 gas bill, they told me I actually received a discount because they didn't charge me a fee for safety checks on an empty tank. I responded that they had let the tank go dry so why would I be responsible for that anyway? I basically got a song and dance about their increase cost of operations during the cold snap and that was the cause of the increase gas prices.
I filed a complaint with the State of TN Consumer Protection Agency for price gouging in a declared state of emergency (they declared a state of emergency the same week I was ripped off by Heritage). I paid my bill in installments for a prearranged late fee and sometime in the summer received a discount of 175.00 on my remaining balance. I’d like to think it was the state attorney’s office that made them refund me the money. I can guarantee you it wasn't their conscience that got to them. Fast forward to end of summer. I told them to come get their tank and they told me it would be a $40 pick up fee and a $150 gas pumping fee to remove my gas from their tank. My tank was practically empty because I did not get a refill after the initial price gouge. They ripped me coming and going. Lied about pick up date and delayed by three weeks. They said they didn't receive a request in writing so they didn't have to come pick it up in the initial time frame they quoted me. I, nor anyone I know, will ever do business with them again.
Called to end my service with Heritage Propane and have them pickup their empty 250 gallon tank. Now they say I owe them a $107 tank pickup fee! They are outta their ** minds if they think for one minute I will be paying them anything to pickup their tank! I'll give them 30 days to pick it up. If not picked up by then, I will have it hauled off by the junk man. WARNING! STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM THIS DAMN COMPANY!!!!!
I've been a customer of Heritage Propane since 1995. Jan 31, 2014, they filled my tank (339 gallons) and sent me a bill at $5.49/gal. I checked the NC Utilities website and saw that propane was selling in NC that week for $4.20/gal. I called another propane company and had them unhook the Heritage Propane tank, and install one of their own (at a rate of $3.99/gal). This was the first week of February. I then called Heritage to pick up their tank. That's over 100 days ago. I have called three times and had pickup expedited....still no pickup.
In the meantime, they continue to dun me for the amount due, and today I got a letter from a collection agency. I called Heritage again and there is nothing they can do to quit hounding me for money, and nothing they can do to speed up, picking up my tank. First, they try and gouge me on the price of propane. Then they will not get their tank off my property and give credit for the fuel in the tank. They will actually pull more propane out of my tank than I owe them for... They will end up owing me. This is just not the way a business should be run. The local office employees have no power to make anything happen.
Refund on gas tank - We had them pick up our 100-gal tank over 6 months ago. Every time we call about it, we get a different story, from new computer system, girl that does that not in, checking on it now as I have your file in my hand, to this has to be investigated. Meanwhile we are still getting the quarterly bills for the tank. Today Denise tells me, the check will be processed, but will take another three weeks as it has to go to corporate office in PA. I asked that she has the address to that office ready when I have someone else call, if check not received by next month and she accused me of threatening her and hung up the phone. We have been more than patient and we were with them for years. Will never use them again. Guess my next step will be Better Business Bureau and one of the TV channels. Not a threat.
March 2013, was required to fill in a new ACH transfer form. Did so. Mailed it in. Received telephone confirmation it was received. Gave my email in case further contact was needed. No further contact or invoices from Heritage until March 2014. Received invoice dated March 10, 2013 for past due dating to 4/30/2013 totaling $51.99. Called office in Tampa and after lengthy hold related above. Person advised she would look into it and find out why their computer system missed my input. Explained I didn't feel obligated to fix their errors or omissions. Woman said she would look into it. No response.
March 28th, called office to ask for 'on special' top up. Told I would have to pay past due; repeated previous discussion. Person told me she would look into it and get back to me. No response from woman. March 31st received invoice, second in space of 15 days this time adding $36 late fee. Called office, hung up after 10 minutes on hold and redialed. Woman asked me to hold; explained I'd been on hold for 10 minutes. Woman took my number and said she'd call back when they were less busy. No call back, of course.
I signed up as a customer of Hillsboro Gas. Hillsboro's service was prompt, friendly and courteous. Never had a problem until this dreadful Heritage company took them over. Next step for me is to pay the past due, omitting the late fee and to cancel any future dealings with Heritage. After my many decades on this planet, I am happy to confirm that Heritage Propane is the absolute worst company I have ever dealt with and I advise those who may need propane service to SEARCH DILIGENTLY FOR ANY ALTERNATIVE TO HERITAGE PROPANE.
In September 2013, I signed a contract with Heritage and paid them for 500 gallons of propane under a "keep full" contract whereby Heritage was supposed to keep my 250 gallon propane tank full on a monthly basis. On Oct 7, 2013, Dec 7, 2013, and Jan 6, 2014, Heritage delivered a total of 335.1 gallons. On Jan 27, 2014, I called Heritage to inform them that I was getting low on gas and was at 25%. On Jan 29, 2014, I received delivery of only 100 gallons of gas even though the tank could have held the remaining gallons of my contract of 164.9.
On Feb 12, 2013, I called Heritage to inform them that I was again at 25% and needed to get my remaining gallons of 64.9 gallons. They said that delivery would be made in 5-7 days, but after 10 days, I had still not received any propane, and my tank was now at a critical 10%. I called again and was told that their minimum delivery was 100 gallons, and that I would have to now pay $3.59 per gallon for every gallon above my contract price of $2.599.
I would not have had to get the additional 35.1 gallons at $3.59 had Heritage delivered the contract balance of 164.9 gallons on Jan 29, 2014, as they could have delivered, and were supposed to deliver. In addition, because of the additional unnecessary delivery, I had to pay an additional HazMat Fee and Fuel Recovery Fee of $17 that I wouldn't have had to pay if Heritage had delivered the balance of my contract on Jan 29, 2014, as they were supposed to do.
In summary, I had to pay Heritage an additional cost of $50 that I shouldn't have incurred had Heritage honored their contract as they were supposed to do. But even more aggravating is the need to continually monitor my propane tank to ensure that I don't run out of gas, which is extremely critical during the winter as this is our only source of fuel for both heating and cooking. After being a customer of Heritage and their predecessor companies for 30 years, I am fed up with this company and will now look for another company to furnish my propane.
I had service with this company. I sold my house. I was supposed to be refunded $318.82 for gas paid for but not used. This was 16 weeks ago (3 1/2 months) and still have not received my refund. I have called the office several times and I am told every time, "Yes, I see your refund is due for that amount. Your account is stuck in 'limbo' in our computer system and we are very short staffed. I will work on this for you today and call you back." Needless to say, they never call or send a refund check. BAD BUSINESS!!!
Heritage Propane -- their tagline is Relationships Matter. Although that is their tagline, it is not true. I have been a customer of this company since 2009 when I bought my home and it had a buried tank that is owned by them. My first order was accepted and then before I got my bill I lost my job and called them and explained the situation to them and asked if I could have longer to pay the bill. The answer was, "NO"! Short, simple, but not sweet! Every other company I deal with including my mortgage company was willing to work with me, but not Heritage Propane. I worked several part-time jobs until the end of 2011 when I finally got a full time job. During that time I ordered propane, it was delivered and I paid the driver - because this was their requirement.
Fast forward to September 2013! I called my local office on Labor Day, knowing they were not working and left a message and ordered propane. I asked them to return the call and tell me how much I owe so I can make sure I have the amount in my checking account to pay them. I hear nothing from them, so on Thursday after the Labor Day, I drive to the local office and they acknowledged that they got my message, but…they never responded and they were not going to deliver my propane!
When I asked why, the comment was made, "our policy has changed and now you must pay before we deliver it". "Our policy has changed and now you must pay before we deliver it!!” I asked them why I had to pay before it was delivered when I had neighbors who received a bill. That is when I was told, "Because in 2009 you were late paying your bill." Because I lost my job, and did not pay my bill on time they have chosen to punish me 4 years later, although I have continually paid my bill upon delivery every time since then. I checked my credit score and it is 714, which is not too bad, but I was told by Heritage that your credit score does not matter to them.
Overall, they have been the worst company I have ever dealt with; they are rude and talk down to their customers and have no concern about anything but themselves. I would love to change companies but the builder of my home signed an agreement with them to bury the tanks and in the agreement, the homeowner had to pay $750.00 to have it dug up and removed!!! THIS IS THE WORST COMPANY IN AMERICA - I wish there was an award that says that, because these people would win it every year. I would rather deal over and over again with airlines, car dealerships, etc., just to not have to deal with Heritage Propane!!!
In the movie "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" there is a line that says, "I could handle a 3 day insurance seminar and people would say how do you do it and I would reply, (I'm changing the line here), I have survived dealing with Heritage Propane!!!”
Rude customer service... They respond to your questions as though you are stupid and know nothing. Also, the billing department does not know how to keep changes regarding your bill. They always have different prices every month. You really have to keep up with them and make sure you keep all of your bills. As you call Customer Service, get the person's name so you know who you have talked to so you have references to who messed up your order, appointment, billing. I hate calling them for anything because I know that I am going to be talked down to, and I know that I will be waiting for weeks for a scheduled appointment even for a small job as connecting a stove range. But as all of you know, they are the only propane in this part of Tampa area. So unfortunately, I have no one else to use.
As you see, all of the reviews do not get responses from the Company's President, VP, or anyone else in the higher ranks, so you know that they don't care about their customers or keeping their customers. I would dare for the CEO or the VP to respond to any of these complaints and what they are going to do about them. I doubt that they will because they don't care.
They charge you fees when you come, they charge you fees when you go and won't allow anyone to take over the account without charging you a fee for that, too. I have never seen so many fees connected with gas. Needless to say, we will never use Heritage again! This company charges you for things they break, too! I had a technician come out just to fill my gas and the tank was fine. Instead of filling the tank like I asked, he did a "safety/maintenance check" and left. Four months later, we smelled gas leaking, so we called them and he came out (for a fee) and found that the regulator was broken. Of course, this was our responsibility. When he left, we got a $400 bill for a regulator that was broken and in need of repair and they didn't even put gas in the tank again! That was another call, with more fees to pay. Now we are moving from the house we rent and they are charging us to come lock the tank even though the landlord is willing to take the account into his name. I hate this company!
After receiving yet another bill with an increase in the price per gallon, I researched to find that there are now two other companies that can provide propane service to Broward Schools County. Heritage price: $5.15 per gallon. Florida Utilities price: $2.83 per gallon! An 81% difference! When I called Heritage for an explanation, Jenny said that the more you use, the lower the price. When I told her I had another company with a much lower price, she offered no explanation, apology or expression of regret for losing our business! This has been the typical attitude of this business - take it or leave it. I am angry at myself for taking it for so long, but ecstatic that I will get rid of them soon! I hope if you are one of their dissatisfied customers (and I suspect there are many), you will do the same.
I had a morning appointment. I called all day and they showed up at 4:30PM. I was told it would be $220. I got a bill for $490. I took my leaking tank that was full. They were supposed to come back this morning to refill the new empty tank. They never showed. I called the office 2 times and was assured that they would be here. Well, they can bite me. I hate this company, but they have a monopoly in Hillsborough County. Where in the hell is my gas?
I moved into my apartment (Village of Canterbury) on November 15th of 2011. My first Heritage Propane bill was $123.00 (Nov 15-Dec 20). Next month, December 20-Jan 24, I received a bill for $334.00. After I received this bill, I made major changes. I turned off my thermostat. I purchased an Eden Pure Heater, letting my water drip out of one sink, to keep the pipes from freezing. I rolled up towels under my doorways. All that, to still come into a cold apartment, and my next bill was $304. I don't understand where this is coming from. I know the propane runs the hot water, heat, and the stove, but I don't cook, and I shower once a night. I pay $732 in rent, and I cannot afford a $300 propane bill. I'm a student, working two jobs, and this is my first time living alone, and I must say it's become a nightmare. I call the company constantly to talk to rude, unsympathetic, sarcastic people, who keep telling me "it's winter time". I know it's winter time. They are rude.
First off, I've been a customer for years and have been on the keep fill list and I prepay my gas in August of every year. I explain this past year I wasn't sure how much gas to buy because I wasn't living in the home. Anyway I received a bill dated Jan. 29, 2010 for $578.87 225 gallons. I called and question this because I didn't feel as though I used this gas. I had to wait for someone to call me back. I got another bill for $438.92 163 gallons of gas dated Feb. 26, 2010. They wanted to charge me $75 to see if I had a leak at the tank and another fee to come inside to see if I had a leak.
I don"t agree with this. I paid these people first check $600 on 3/10/10, leaving a credit of $21.13 to go towards the second bill, which I paid $411.34 on 4/27/10. I went by my home to cut the grass and Heritage Propane driver came to me and said you owe $50 and I'm here to collect or put a lock on your tank and it will cost you $75 to get it removed. Days past and a lock was put on my tank full of gas. Well last week, Friday, I came by my home to do an outside repair and my full tank of propane was gone. Do I need to report this to the police?
I recieved a bill statement dated on 3/11/08 from heritage propane stating that my acount was past due and I quote" As of this date your acount balance is $143.14 includes late fees and statement fees".I recieved the bill on 3/12/08 and got it out of my mailbox at about 5:30 P.M. when I got home from work. I called at the office at 9:20 A.M. on 3/13/08 to pay my bill when they informed me that my bill was $8.00 more for late fees. whem I question the fact that the letter states that laete fees were included on my bill, the tell me that late fees are posted on the 10th of every month. I asked them why they were not on my bill, dated 3/11/08 and Mr. Don said that is ussually that way it is. I tthink this practice is decieving to custumers in order to keep charging more. This is not the first time this happens. I want to know what I can do as a consumer.
