Receive king mattress from Big Lots today. First off, delivery was an hour late. Once we removed the plastic from mattress we noticed a hole and stains. I called Big Lots and advised them of this, and they told me to call tomorrow to help us find the same mattress at another store. Then he had the nerve to say, "Well you can bring the mattress back to the store," and they would give me a used mattress to use till they find me a new one. Really. I also told them I would not pay for delivery again for the new mattress. He then stated, "We may be able to work something out." This is worst experience I have ever had anywhere.

3 years ago, I spent a decent dime on a bed that had drawers built in for my daughter and mattress. Within less than 6 months, the drawers broke apart, the frame became loose from the sides, we tried wood glue and clamps to hold it together to only have it break yet again. The mattress was extremely hard unlike the one we viewed in store. My bf used to work for this company after high school and said that they always had complaints.

I purchased a Simmons sectional, about 2 years ago. I paid $1000 for it. My "like leather" material started peeling about 6 months ago. Needless to say I am highly disappointed. I have a 14-year-old, an 18-year-old, and no pets. I take care of everything I purchase because I'm a low-income single mom. Simmons and Big Lots should be ashamed.

Different managers from store to head cashier. A turnover once a year. Threatens worker family and the worker. Nothing is done and they say they tried to contact worker, they didn't. They target for leaving. For nothing and fake things they take at will employment and make it a joke. No one is in charge of anything. It's always see so and so. Try to set meetings for people who are never available. The way they treat employees and tell them to treat customers - double standards. It's horrible. Makes me wonder why so much turnover.

I like Big Lots. However, I am very disappointed in the quality of a product sold by Big Lots, and that we purchased, namely Simmons Harbortown brand furniture. As others have stated, the bonded material on the 'leather look' loveseat and couch is rapidly disintegrating, and revealing a thin gray layer of vinyl-like material. I have never seen anything like it. Unfortunately, I also purchased a large Simmons sectional shortly after we made this purchase because it looked good, but we weren't aware of the problems we would be experiencing with this material. Frankly, we won't let anyone sit on the sectional fearing it may disintegrate like the material on the couch and loveseat.
Big Lots, you need to step up and support those of us that purchased this inferior product from Simmons. I'm shocked to see you still sell this product after reading multiple reviews about inferior quality and wear. The manufacturer needs to have a buyback or replacement, or at minimum a fix in place for the issue. Many manufacturers defend quality and have excellent policies to handle this type of issue. What say you? I will gladly share pictures and proof of purchase, just email me.

I bought this living room set about 3 months ago - it was one of the more pricier sets. I wanted a good one that will last, we paid about $1000.00+/- for a sectional and a chair 1/4. The seams are coming apart. It has tears in the cushions and on the arms of furniture, and on the pillow tops, it also looks like it becoming discolored. It's not abused. We keep the gate up so no dogs get on it. I keep a cover on it but still it's horrible. Also we had to purchase an Ottoman separately to hold up the lounger part of the couch that should be included, "not separately". Without it the lounger would have NO support and with the Ottoman it has a hump where the Ottoman supports the lounger that is really not comfortable. The display did not have this hump and the quality seemed better??? I'm hoping that Big Lots will replace this set. My bedroom set is fantastic. It could just be the lemon.... I'm not really sure.

I purchased the 16'x16' sun shelter to go over my 15' round pool and was so excited to find one that big however once it was set up by no means was it 16'x16.' I would have to have put it inside the pool to use it and that can't be. So it was a waste of my time and money to even purchase this. From corner to corner it only measures 10'x10'. That is quite a difference. I do not live close to Big Lots and haven't been able to get back to the store so that is why I'm contacting you over the internet. I have a membership card with Big Lots so all the information will be in the computer under my name which is Kathleen **, zip code 93240.

All these other reviews are B.S. I have and I have seen the other ones. They are great. Someone is setting up these reviews to hurt Big Lots. I don't work for them or have anything to do with them but just look around at them. You can see that how you going to have this many people review your product from around the USA and as you will notice it was every few days. I would ask for uploaded receipt from the retailer of the product and the date and time.
I'm getting to think people or companies are using these reviews to hurt other companies. I might be wrong but I prefer and demand a uploaded receipt. You can block your name and address but other than that I believe 98% of these reviews are lies. They make a nice product. These people make it sound like it's somethings they got from the junkyard!! We need and want fairness on reviews!!!

Stopped in your store in Union City GA to check some prices and buy a few things then had my truck booted by a Parking services co and charged $500.00 to have them removed. If the sign was large enough to read or in the right place I would not have parked. I think this is a trap, and a odd way to treat your customers.

I had purchased a couch and loveseat from Big Lots. I didn't have it a week and the couch cushions started to unravel in the front. The loveseat had a spring that started to protrude up through the middle of the seat. I had no trouble with the return but the next set was just as bad as the first. I live alone with a 3 yr. old and no pets. Within 3 months the couch had a big spring coming up through the middle. It caused a great big scratch on my leg at least 3 inches long. I sat down with my leg under me and that's when it happened. I was told that the frame has a lifetime warranty but not the rest of the couch. The couch looked like it had a big valley in the middle. I had to put blankets over the spring and dip in the couch. What Junk! The loveseat did survive this. Never, never again will I buy furniture from Big Lots. Junk, junk, junk!

Last year, August 2014-right before school started, I went to Big Lots and spent over $250 for my daughter's back to school things. I asked the Cashier/Associate if she could look up my Member Number so I can get the applicable discounts for my purchase. She informed me that I would get a chance to look it up once she's finished ringing me up. When she finished, I asked her why I couldn't look up my Member info, she told me that I COULDN'T because she had finished ringing me up.
Needless to say, the Associate was ready to get off work and didn't care if customer satisfaction was provided or NOT! I will never (ever!) go back to the Big Lots located on RED BIRD LANE, Dallas, Tx. I don't think I will ever buy anything from Big Lots again- unless a formal apology is made by the store due to their inability to honor a reasonable request from their customer(s). I hope the store goes out of business, because it seems like that store rarely gets customers... I wonder why!

I've purchased furniture from Big Lots twice and each time I had to throw away because it was infested with BED BUGS! First I bought a two piece sofa set made by Ashley furniture, a mercer-mocha stationary set for a total of 700.00 only to throw it away because of beds bugs. So I called the bed bug inspector and paid for them to spray or whatever they do to get rid of the bed bugs. However I had my house inspected twice, once while the furniture from Big Lots was still there and again after I threw it out.
So a couple months later I needed a new bed, and Big Lots has reasonable prices for their beds, and so I purchased a Simmons Queen Size Mattress and box springs for 400.00. I just had to throw it away because of bed bugs. I thoroughly checked my other furniture in my house which is a different location now and there are no signs of bed bugs. I have spent my hard earned money. I've worked a lot of overtime at my job to get this furniture and keep it and not waste. I am a very dissatisfied customer and I will never ever set foot in Big Lots ever again. These bed bugs have bitten my son and I. I am very saddened about this because I'm not a rich person. I live paycheck to paycheck.

I had two people to set up the canopy and as we were completing the last step, the entire canopy started to twist and like dominos it came down. 4 connectors broke (cheap plastic or defective parts). I emailed W&F and no response, I called them with no results and finally a manager told me that I needed the receipt before they would talk to me. This was only a matter of replacing the connectors. I paid 60.00 for this piece of junk. Would never recommend doing business with this company.

My wife has been wanting to get a Keurig K40 but we haven't been able to afford the $89.99 price that they sell for at Wal-Mart and other retailers. I was excited to get an email from Big Lots which stated that they had the same K40 model offered at a "price so low that it couldn't be shown" in the email. So I went to the website, which said the same thing but also had a valid date range of 4/2/15-4/9/15.
So, I took time from my lunch break and drove to one of the local stores on 5/7/15. The guy at the counter actually rolled his eyes when I asked about the item. He scanned it and said it was $89.99. When I showed him the email, he said he had never seen Big Lots do that before in an email or on the website. Then he told me that it would be in the Mother's Day sale starting on Saturday. When I told him that the dates were from 4/2/15-4/9/15, he said he didn't know anything about it but it would be on sale on Saturday.
It's now Saturday and I just got back from another Big Lots closer to me, and it is still $89.99. I asked the manager about the price and the dates and he said that it was at the regular price. There was no sale and it would still be that price after 4/9. I contacted the Big Lots customer service department and they told me, "We apologize for any inconvenience you have experienced. For Big Lots to be able to carry the Keurig coffee-maker, the Keurig company requires us to advertise the item in this manner. We are not allowed to show the price in our ads or on our website." However, this didn't address the valid date issue which give one the impression of a special price.

I visited this store today, May 8th, at 3:49 PM. I purchased several items! There were two necklaces that were $10 each on a rack that was clearly marked, "Buy one, get one free," along with a description that seemed to match two necklaces I selected. When I went to check out, the cashier told me they weren't the ones that were "buy one, get one free." So, I told her I didn't want them. She set them to the side and rang up the items I wanted. When I got home I looked at the receipt and noticed I had been charged for the items I didn't want or receive. I called ** and asked him to refund the $20 to my debit card. He was polite and told me there was nothing he could do without me coming back to the store. If I chose to return to the store, it would be to return everything I purchased! I need my $20 returned to me! If you cannot or won't help me, I will contest the entire amount with my bank.

Was thrilled to get new furniture, got it home and looks great. When I contacted the finance company Progressive, progleasing.com 1-877-898-1970 I was hit in the gut and the new furniture didn't look so great anymore. I chose to pay this in 90 days for sofa that cost $400, the store employee and the emailed contract was not clear about the hidden fee for the finance company, my $400 sofa ended up to be $489.00. Don't fall for the "you are approved" line, they take $50 for stupid processing fee with other costs = $71.00 and tell you that is toward your first payment. Wrong - that's not the case don't believe the lies, you have 10 days to return. (I'm just gonna suck it up, sofa looks good enough to keep) Unless you have an extra $50 to dish out good luck shopping. Oh and if you chose the 12 months financing you are paying double what it is worth, on top of the finance fees.
The Big Lots employee did say it was for the first month's payment not a finance fee, & the contract from finance company was emailed and it is very tricky how they word the $50. 90 day payment option: retail price of the property quoted by our supplier by $50 - that is their way of saying pay $50 more.

I used to be employed with Big Lots. I was suspended from my job last year and terminated shortly after. Despite my situation, Big Lots has retained me as a customer at locations other than where I used to work. I recently was shopping in a store and was followed and questioned. I had store management follow me all the way until I made my purchase. Shortly after I left I received a phone call from the district manager. I was being accused of taking photographs of the store conditions. I wasn't taking photographs, nor was I there to assess the store in any way. I had to purchase 1 item that I regularly purchase and look at an item that was on sale in their weekly ad.
I was told that "unethical photos were recently taken" at another location. I haven't been employed with Big Lots in over 3 months and I only reported to the District Manager in question for 1 week prior to my release. The DM had nothing to do with my release either so I'm very confused, angry and annoyed that this DM feels he had a right to call me to accuse and question my presence in one of his stores. I sent an email to the CEO and copied the COO and have not received a response as of yet. It's been 3 days. Am I allowed to be a customer?

Then he told me "In the back." I said, "In the back where" since it is a big store. I asked me to take me and HE would not do it. Lately I had experienced other situations but like this was, NEVER and coming from a manager. I always think that service comes first. I don't care how much I spend. I only look for service. This person does not have any manners.
Before they used to have this courteous manager that is not there any more. Maybe he got a better job. I don't know his name but he was from India. It was a delight to talk to him. Always in a good mood and willing to help. I will never in my life, visit this store. A neighbor of mine told me, I don't go to the cheap stores and places where people are rude. It wasn't at all like the picture on the box and would not stay put together. I tried tape, I tried glue, and nothing could keep the service station operational. It was so cheaply made yet the price was not cheap.
When you only buy three presents each year for Christmas and one of them turns out to be a pile of junk the only person who suffers is my sweet loving son. Of course, Big Lots would not return it for cash value and offered store credit which shocks me since I had my receipt. But since I live in OKC they thought I would like to exchange it for more of their overpriced garbage. I will never shop at Big Lots again for anything more than a soda or a candy bar.

First I have shopped at Big Lots with my parents since childhood. A few months ago I had a horrible experience at the new Big Lots location. While shopping with my wife I noticed my right eye become blurry. Soon my left eye began to do the same. I left, not sure what was happening. I had to pull over due to the fact I lost all peripheral vision and my head and eyes began to pound. Contacted my eye doctor ASAP. He said I was having an ocular migraine. Never had one before. The migraine resolved after about 7 hours of pain and fear. I could not see.
Today my wife asked me to stop at Big Lots to pick up a couple things. I entered the store and noticed some blurriness. Thought it was because I had just gotten up left the house. The blurriness became severe in my right eye very fast. I paid for what I had and got out of the store. I knew what I was dealing with this time and took approximate action to fix the ocular migraine I was having. It resolved after 4 hours, leaving me exhausted. I emailed the store to find out what lighting they have as it appears this is what caused both migraines. I have not had this problem anywhere else at any time, only when I have gone to this store. If you have had ocular migraines check the store first before entering. Or if you can get dark, dark sunglasses I think that would help a lot. I doubt they're going to change their lighting.

Being in the service industry, I'm used to people only ever contacting corporate or upper management after a bad experience. I'm a firm believer in giving people praise when I leave happy just as most people complain when they leave because they weren't treated like the second coming of Christ. That being said, I went into the Big Lots on Sawmill rd in Columbus, Ohio today to get a box spring. The woman who helped me, TJ, was nothing but helpful, kind & just genuine all around. She helped me get the box spring & we made a couple jokes back and forth about me wanting this beautiful wooden chest but trying to practice monetary self control. Now that I know it's 20% off today, I'm coming back for not only the chest but an ottoman & a few other things I found online (clearly taking that self control VERY seriously).
Anyways, basically I just really felt like TJ should get the acknowledgement & praise she so obviously deserves. I hope to see her later this afternoon when I come back & I hope she gets some kind of staff acknowledgement for my rant about how great she was! Thank you for all of the hard work you all do everyday! You are all truly appreciated.

I called Simmons, and they told me the recliners are manufactured by United Furniture and gave me their phone number.
I then called United Furniture, who told me there is a one year warranty on the material, so they would not cover any damages since they are now 3 years old. I then wrote to Big Lots corporate, told them the whole story, and sent them these photos. They had their district manager call me, and he offered me 2 replacement recliners at a 40% off discount. I decided to replace them with recliners that are made from fabric instead of the fake leather. I highly recommend that you do not ever buy any (fake) leather furniture of any kind from Big Lots. I picked some items and went to cashier. In line there was a couple who also had 90% off items, the cashier had to correct the price. When it came my time the cashier ran up a few items, which didn't ring up 90%. I told the cashier, her answer was "they put up those signs too soon." The signs were up but to her mind it was too soon.
I call corporate office explained the situation. I was told they indeed were taking 90% off, was I sure I didn't get 90% off. I assume the woman I was talking felt I was able to understand what was going on. I asked for someone who was interested in helping me, I was beginning to see a pattern here. I said "the discount was not 90%." The cashier replied "I marked them down the way I wanted." This cashier who has caused me trouble in the past didn't need to listen to corporate, I find that very interesting. I'm awaiting the district manager's call on this subject. And sell bad product. And are very rude......Never will I spend my hard earn money at Big lie.

I purchased an already opened up very large box of wicker-style patio furniture, the Key Largo set. I was told the only missing part was a middle section, not necessary for the functionality of the set itself, more of an insert to make is larger. Imagine my dismay when I put it together to discover a seat section of the set missing. Without the seat section, there are two arms or sides and 2 cushions sitting about. I went back to Big Lots to see if they may have the seat section in the back room somewhere. I approached the manager and started relaying what was missing and showing him the instruction sheets for each section of the sectional, but before I hardly stopped talking, he was spewing "I'm sorry for the inconvenience. There's not much we can do. It was the last of a set from last summer. We're not ordering any more of the Key Largo patio furniture this next summer," blah, blah, blah...
It was then I realized he hadn't even looked at any of the papers I'd brought with me, and seemed almost indifferent, like, not surprised at all, asked me no questions about what was in the box. I asked him if the other manager was in, the one that helped me put it in my car when I bought it. He stated no, he was not there, but he remembered the box because he was the one who put it out on the floor to be sold. I looked at him and said, "Then you knew it was missing a vital piece for it to be put together correctly." He then said he would like to help, but... I told him I would appreciate a bit more effort, like maybe personally going to the back and actually looking for it. He did but found nothing. He stated he would go back to the garden dept. area and find out if they were going to get anything in soon, (I guess he forgot he had already said they were not going to order any of the Key Largo series of patio furniture for the year). I followed him. He never spoke a word to anyone, faking the entire thing! I walked away, around the corner to wait for him to find me and relay his lie.
Sure enough, he came around and stated no Key Largo furniture was going to be ordered, apologized again, straight faced, and like on automation. I told him as manager, he is responsible for what goes out on the floor for sale to customers, and, that I, as an intelligent, highly educated person, am aware and intuitive enough to clearly see he had put that out on the floor, after having sold it to another, who brought it back when they found out the seat, and the legs (by the way...) were missing, in the hope some other unfortunate customer would purchase it. How sad for such a nice store, one that has only been open for a year here, would do that to their customers.

About three years ago I purchased a faux leather chair from Big Lots. After about 2 years the fabric began to peel. As time went on, the entire top of the chair had lost its fabric. So when it came time to purchase a new recliner, I thought I'd buy a chair that was suede or simply anything but the fake leather. I went back to Big Lots, as their furniture looks and feels satisfactory, plus it is always reasonably priced. I bought a large, overstuffed recliner for $300. That was the end of June of this year.
By the end of August, the chair was already starting to fall apart. The fabric in the seat has shifted, so it's simply uncomfortable to sit it. The left armrest somehow detached from where it was sewn into the chair, so when you sit, you're rubbing on the wood frame. It creeks unbelievably loud for being so new, and the footrest padding is losing it's seem.
Now I'd like to point out it's just my husband and I. No pets. We are not overweight, so there is no reason a brand new chair should fall apart like this. I WILL NEVER BUY FURNITURE FROM BIG LOTS AGAIN. Save your money and buy a la-z-boy. I did email their complaints department, but the best they'd do is replace it. Now why in God's name would I want another piece of their poorly made furniture? So I cannot stress this warning to all other consumers, DO NOT BUY THEIR FURNITURE.

On May 13, 2014 I slipped and fell on water at the entrance of the Big Lots store in Waterford MI. I had been shopping in the store for about 30 min. I had some things to purchase. Upon checking out I found I did not have enough cash on me. I told the cashier that I had to go to my car and get my credit card and I would be right back. It was a bright sunny day - the parking lot was dry. I went to the car, retrieved my card and headed back into the store. I noticed that the concrete at the entrance was wet like they had hosed it down. I walked back into the store and the next thing I know I am on the floor. My right leg slipped and I landed on my left knee. I had immediate pain. I had a very difficult time trying to get up. As I was getting up another customer came in and stepped over me. No one came to help me.
Finally the cashier who was about 8 feet away looked up and said are you ok? And I said I don't know. I was still trying to get up and the manager came over and asked are you ok, and I said I don't know. I said let me pay for my purchases and I would like to sit down and fill out an accident report. So I limped over to some lawn furniture sat down and waited for him to bring me the report to fill out. It took forever for me to get it. In the meantime the manager put up a caution wet floor sign and had an employee mop up the water. A person I know was checking out and saw me sitting there and came over and asked me what happened. She walked over to the entry door and saw the water on the floor and said it was probably off the wheels of the carts coming across the wet cement outside the entry doors.
Through this whole ordeal I feel I was not treated with any respect or dignity in my opinion the manager was very cynical. I incurred loss time from work 2 and 1/2 days and doctor bills. I submitted my claim to be reimbursed for about 1500.00. Around the middle of august I contacted Big Lots legal dept and got hold of the adjuster. She hadn't even looked at my claim and admitted it had been on her desk since June. She said she would look at it and call me back by next Friday. The call never came. So today I received denial of my claim. I called the adjuster and asked how they arrived at their decision. She said that they were not liable because 25 people had walked in and did not fall and on the video tape they did not see any water on the floor. I don't know how you can see a clear liquid on a light colored tile floor from a video where the camera is mounted several feet away. And why would you put up a caution wet floor sign and have an employee mop it up if there was not water on the floor.
She accused me of yelling at her when she was clearly yelling at me and calling me a liar. She said that it was on my shoes, or I picked it up in the parking lot and she hung up on me. I WILL NEVER SHOP AT BIG LOTS AGAIN!!!! I am telling the truth. Thank goodness I wasn't hurt too severely. It is my opinion that Big Lots is not concerned about the safety of their customers and when something happens due to their negligence they will deny it at all costs.

I came into the store on the 7-13-14 - 20% off sale, and brought a number of things. I was overcharged for one item and that wiped out the savings I had spent to come to Big Lots for in the first place. After I got home, I noticed the problem and I called the store back and spoke to the Mgr. to let them know what happened. The mgr. suggested I come back to get the correct price and proper discount. I told him it would cost me more in gas to come back for the small savings I would get.
I asked him if we could work it out some other way. My suggestions: Mail me a store credit for the next time I go shopping there or email me a discount for the next time I will shop there. Even though it was clearly the store's mistake, he refused both suggestions and choose to put me in a situation where the gas spent coming back was not worth it for me. I guess Big Lots can't afford the cost of a stamp, nor do they have enough computer literacy to make it right by emailing a coupon. (I came in because of a notification I got in my email account.) It looks like the only thing they can do for their customers is overcharge them, wiping out any savings they may have had. At this point, I don't care to shop where customer service or customer retention is a LOW priority with them.

I have shopped at my local Big Lots for years. In that time, I have watched customer service go downhill. I know it isn't totally the employees' fault. I'm usually sympathetic with the cashiers and the lower employees. With that said, recently I have seen the managerial team at the local store abuse their employees. I have seen the furniture manager bully cashiers and yell at them in front of customers. He is a short guy with rotting teeth. Creepy looking feller. I have also witnessed a female manager who has behaved horribly and abusive to the lower level employees. As well, I have witnessed the highest level manager engaging with the lower rank employees inappropriately.
It seems that Big Lots has lowered their standards concerning the hiring practices when it comes to filling managerial slots on their manager teams. There is also nepotism being practiced at the Big Lots I shop at. I know several people who have applied at the Big Lots nearest me and the only people hired are relatives of present employees and relatives' friends. I've decided to stop shopping there because I find the restrooms disgusting, unprofessional managerial team, horrible customer service, expired food, high prices and overall negative experiences every time I shop there. I'm done with a company who puts people with rotting front teeth and doesn't care about their own personal appearance or hygiene in charge of other people and let him bully people who at least have a nice set of choppers that doesn't make a customer want to throw up in their own mouths.

I purchased a Luggage and Duffle bag for my daughter to use for youth camp coming up in a few months. Once in line I placed both the duffle bag, luggage and other items on the counter to pay. The associate named ** proceeded to open up the bags to check them and of course that's nothing new. The lady then looks at me and says, "The bag does not come with these rain boots." I looked at her puzzled and said, "What?" She then took out a pair of pink rain boots from inside of the luggage. I replied, "I did not know those were in there." She gave me a very evil look while taking out the boots and to top it off my daughter was with me and it was raining outside so of course it looked as though I put them in there. I was speechless and felt myself getting very embarrassed and extremely UPSET.
I work so I have more than enough money to buy the freaking rain boots if I wanted to. As a matter of fact, I did not even see any rain boots out for sale. Why don't the associates check their merchandise to make sure a customer will not be humiliated like that at the counter. I have every right to return the items and demand my money back. I just didn't react as I would have liked to but I do plan to go back to the store and return the items just for being treated so rudely. I submitted this in its entirety via Big Lots' online contact form earlier today: "I helped open my local Big Lots in Bowling Green, KY, 20+ years ago. Since then, I have watched its customer service decline into almost sheer nothingness. I have had two separate issues regarding my checkout experience in the past 4 months, and today I am motivated to do something more than call them and complain about it, as nothing will be done. I can already tell by the attitudes I witnessed today.
Let me tell you briefly about the two incidents, and let you decide how each would make you feel. Last Halloween, I went in and picked out around $20 worth of store items, and headed to the checkout to beat the standard store closing time (think it was 9pm). I'm always more than respectful of any kind of store's hours, because of my own experiences in closing stores and restaurants in my past jobs. There had been NO announcements that night - just around 3 customers in the entire store (we'd had bad weather, Trick-or-Treating actually cancelled that night), and I was the first to make it up front, anticipating the actual close time and not wanting your store's personnel to experience a close-rush at the registers.
When I approached the checkout, one of your store clerks quickly took over at the register and checked his OWN items out while I stood there waiting. Although this was bad enough behavior, he wasn't done with me yet. He had to 'get a rise' out of me (I hadn't said a word) by telling me “The store is closed. I'm sorry, but we can't check you out.” That was bad, and I stood there for a second, thinking he was somehow making some kind of inappropriate little joke (I don't know that guy). He wasn't. He stood there mockingly like he was going to make me exit without getting my items, even though the store still had 2 full minutes to close (not to mention the two other customers still in the store).
While I questioned him in disbelief, another associate stood by him, watching my reaction, doing nothing. I asked him a total of three times to make sure that's what he was saying. After 3 times, I left my items on the counter, and turned to leave... it was at this moment that he finally he decided he'd had enough of getting the best of me, and tried to get me back into the store to complete my purchase. I left, telling him his act was ridiculous, and making a point to tell him how poorly the customer service had been getting, and that I might not come back. That's 'story #1'. I did NOT go back in for 2 months (I live within 3 miles, and have enjoyed shopping at the Big Lots I helped open, anywhere from 20-40 times per year, up until recent years).
Story #2 (Today, just about 30 mins ago): I went in, shopped for around 30 minutes, had picked up around $25 in items to pay for and leave. When I approached the checkout counter, a single lane was open with two customers in it, and an elderly lady walked up behind me with 2 bags of jellybeans, so I let her in front of me. The clerk was being way too slow in ringing up the 1st customer, and took over 3-4 minutes just to ring up 2-3 items (the customer was paying cash, to clarify). After one minute of watching this painfully slow 'act', I noticed a 2nd Big Lots clerk (an older man, short, with glasses) walk up behind her as if to be waiting to take over for her, for her break. This guy seemed intent on that register, yet the other one wasn't open yet.
Finally, while the 2nd customer was finally being given her receipt at that register, a 3rd Big Lots clerk stepped up to the other lane (in same desk), and checked out 2 others customers in quick fashion, clearing that lane up. I thought about changing lanes, but didn't want to rudely cut in front of one, maybe two, other customers rolling their carts around to this newly-opened lane, so I stayed put. One of those did go on up to that 2nd lane, and the new clerk was in the middle of ringing up her items, when my turn at 'my lane'.
About this time, two more men rolled up near that lane and seemed to be hanging back for some reason, I couldn't tell. But one of them was holding four large metal patio chairs from the furniture dept. that seemed heavy, so I supposed he'd be heading straight into that lane, as yet another person had walked up behind me. So, again, I stayed. Right when my turn came up to finally check out of this little mess, the older Big Lots clerk (the man with glasses) said something to the slow clerk in my lane, she stepped back, and he began doing what turned out to be a lengthy, time-consuming 'return' for one of the males who'd come up front with their patio chairs.
This transaction could have waited 'til I was through, but the little guy seemed intent on getting this done while ignoring the heck out of me. At the time this man took over the register. I was the ONLY person standing in line there, and had ALREADY waited longer than anyone else up front (including two sales personnel). I had neatly arranged my 10 or so items in two neat stacks to make things easy, even, so I was pretty perturbed. I stood and fumed for almost 4-5 minutes until the 3rd clerk finally saw what was going on, spoke up, and grabbed my stacks of items and carried them across to her own till, apologizing 'in general', while EVERY OTHER CLERK HAD BEGUN INTENTLY IGNORING WHAT THEY'D JUST DONE.
I quietly told her things weren't looking very good at that store anymore, and it was getting hard for me to shop there, with regards to the way I'd been treated just then, and over the latest few years. She was very nice, and made sure not to offend any of her associates, BTW, by agreeing with my little 'quiet rant'. Once I left the store, I called them on my cell to 'lodge a complaint'. But the 1st clerk answered it (I'd heard her talking enough to know it was her), and seemed overly-nice, forgetful of who I'd been (even though I'd been out of the store just 5 minutes at most), and even corrected me when I was talking about the transaction (I'd left thinking it was a large furniture purchase, because the Big Lots 'furniture guy' was standing up front with a large item, and I saw the amount pop up on the register while I was forced to stand there waiting).
She interrupted me annoyingly to correct me, asking me if I was sure it was a purchase, and she thought it was a 'return'. I tried to get across to her my point that it just didn't matter, as I thought - still think - that I was wrongly waylaid during my own purchase, as I had stood there for 4 full minutes before I saw this guy even approach the counter, again, along with your 'furniture guy' (back brace - I've seen him doing this at this store, for years). This little older guy with glasses is the problem. He never even made eye contact with me, much less apologized for delaying my wait to the point it was almost ridiculous, and I think totally avoidable.
My checkout time was well under 3 minutes from start to finish, and I already had cash out to make my purchase, so I just don't get it. I told the girl on the phone that when I'd helped open the store, I'd met a 'big wig' (possibly even the biggest - either the actual owner, or a big store - opener guy they used all those years ago... he drove an actual Pink Caddy with real longhorns across the front of it). I'd met that guy, and he'd been in Big Lots from the start, and I got the impression that he was a no-bones type of man who wouldn't put up with anything less than the best from 'his people' (he was our boss for the 2 weeks it took to open that store, and he worked us HARD!).
I told the young woman that, if HE were still around, and walked in as 'Secret Boss' (different car for sure), he'd probably have fired everyone there, and might have even 'punched' that little older twerp with glasses. She seemed to think this was funny. I'm sure she didn't believe anything more than I was crazy, but she'd actually seen the whole thing.
Here's my final statement on your CS in my hometown of Bowling Green, KY: I've cut my own visits to the store to 25% in the last four years, and have told many people to avoid them since this began happening... and I didn't have to. Every time I've been there, the store has less and less customers. Unless someone there is cooking your books (Adding non-existing sales), your Bowling Green store is sure to be closed sooner than many of your others nationwide, and I'd say 75% of the cause would be due to customer service."
ADD'L NOTE: I really did help open the store, and as a result of some things I saw behind the scenes at this store, quickly adopted a general rule of thumb I have used when shopping at ANY Big Lots store I've ever shopped. Basically, this rule goes as follows: DO NOT BUY FOOD OF ANY KIND THERE! Not sodas, not even checkout 'impulse buy' candy bars, not holiday candies (they're over a year old, I assure you, and also assure you 100% that they've been temporarily stored in COMPLETELY UNSANITARY CONDITIONS while awaiting shipment to the 'Big Lots near you'. Not chips, dips, condiments... not even bottled WATER.
BEWARE, because WHAT YOU'D BE EATING IS FILTHY - if not the INSIDE, then most assuredly the packaging. Many times we had to spray down food in plastic containers because huge amounts of rat/mouse droppings would spill out when we'd cut open boxes to stock shelves. When we were stocking the store for the first time, reams of cereal boxes poured out of poorly-wrapped pallets, and mice often scattered everywhere. The first time it happened, there were gasps, even some of the toughest guys; after it kept happening over the next two weeks, many people began quitting, some even talking about moving away if 'this type of store was coming to town'.
Every time we witnessed this happening, workers would look around in eerie silence as if worried they'd lose their precious jobs if they called the local health dept. and reported these people... who, BTW, were already telling us to simply 'tape up' many boxes with chew-marks all over them, TO PLACE THEM OUT ON THE FLOOR FOR SALE. HONESTLY, I'd never seen anything like it. They'd exert incredible pressure on anyone coming to them even questioning whether to put such filthy food out for sale, or 'destroy it' (sounded more guilt-inducing than 'toss it', see).
In the 20+ years since this store opened, I have caved on my little credo TWICE -just TWO TIMES... and each time came away with nasty, disgusting reminders of why I'd made the rule in the first place. Seriously, 20/20, Nightline, or some major investigative news outlet should do an insider investigatory piece on their warehouses. I'm 100% certain what they'll find with disgust, horrify, sicken, and enrage viewers.
MOVING ON to Big Lots' apparent attitudes towards their 'slave force': when helping open our local Big Lots (converting an old closed Woolco store in a local abandoned shopping mall), I was forced (under threats of termination) to scale stacks of large cardboard boxes almost 30 feet high... several of which toppled while I was trying to stack them, in Big Lots' 'mad rush' to get the store open. Ironically, because I don't smoke, I was also the peon they used to do the jobs of their 'temps' who did spend more than half their day outside smoking... all because that store's 'opening crew' (what I'm calling the jerks who were paid by Big Lots to go around opening new stores)... well, their 'crew' also smoked, every single one of them, like freight trains... 2-3 packs per day a piece.
They literally discovered an old abandoned security office upstairs and sat around the entire two weeks smoking, drinking, and God knows what else, all the while openly and loudly speculating on how much money they all stood to make doing what they did. I wasn't kidding in what I said in my complaint above, either the 'chief' actually did drive around in a genuine, gaudy, pink Cadillac, complete with ridiculous Longhorn steer horns on the hood. He was a real 'peach', too - when they found out, first day, that there 'technically' weren't even functional bathrooms in the store for their entire workforce (around 100 people total, which they quickly cut in half after the first week), they used ME to clean the place.
The 'pink Caddy' guy told me to go out on the floor, find every type of household cleaning solution I could (from boxes not even opened yet. I literally had to tear the place apart to find them), AND go into the bathroom WITHOUT SO MUCH AS A SIMPLE PAPER FILTER TO BREATHE THROUGH and clean out the bathrooms… the worst part being he let me get about an hour into this 'enterprise' (seriously? it looked/smelled like hobos had broken in and used the bathroom in the 10-years after the old Woolco had closed).
Then he walked in to push me harder to 'get done'. And without even giving me a break to breathe, told me about some 'commercial cleaner' (containing hydrochloric acid) they'd known about all along, so I could go 'fetch' it, and use it WITH the other stuff (bleach, ammonia, other stuff like Windex, etc.). It took me over 4 hours to get that job done, during which time I inhaled enough of all those cleaners, with no protection whatsoever, to keep me in bed for days afterward (but I didn't, I determined to stay the whole 2 weeks). Verdict? From my first-hand experience, the creators, implementation crews, and esp. the 'top brass' at Big Lots are soulless bottom-feeders with the collective moral character of organ thieves.

The person at the register, I guess, did not fully complete his job/transaction with me since he didn't give it a second thought about making sure the consumer took all of their PAID goods. Another store, I got my money back in 5 minutes. I urge people to never shop at Big Lots again in Macon, Georgia, or anywhere. I better get my money back today or I will be calling someone to get them shut down on Bloomfield road.

Big lots believes in making a buck. But for once could they put their greed aside and respect their associates. Let them spend this one day of thanks with their families. Instead they are being held accountable to work on that day with some crazy hours. They were giving false hope of short shifts. But how can that happen with the store being open all day. I thought the new CEO would have better sense about all this. But he no better than the last greedy CEO.

You have to leave the store." I told him I am waiting for a friend to get done with his interview. Maybe I did not get the job because I was an Asian but my friend got the job because he was white. Big Lots is a $5 billion company and to treat me like that was wrong. Today, I went into the store for the grand opening on 5/1/13. I have worked for store 1158 for almost a year. In fact, it would have been a year this May. My store manager's, though undeserving of that title, name was **. Her sidekick, an associate manager with a false sense of authority and questionable motives, is **. I am nineteen years old. I am a National Guard service member, and I have my Associate Degree in Science and General Studies with only a semester away from getting my degree in Pre-Law. There was a time when I first started working for this store when I guess that ** and ** 'gave me a chance' to be a part of their posse. But seeing through their disguises, I chose otherwise.
I had a situation this past December where a very dear friend of mine passed away, and they crossed the line of disrespect. The other managers aren't so keen on them, so information slips down the ladder pretty easily. They said that I was faking it. They tried several approaches to see how they could write me up for calling out the day that my friend passed away. I called the Get Real Hotline about this, and corporate delegated the case to the district manager, **, who then swept it under the rug. He then called all of the managers into a meeting in which he said that they needed to work together to identify the manager who was encouraging employees to call the hotline and get rid of them. Corrupt? I think so.
The next situation falls just prior to my termination. We had a CSS that transferred, and it had been a while, so I asked if there was a CSS slot open. ** then told me that they had already picked a girl named **. The opening within the store is supposed to be posted on the back bulletin board to give our store associates equal opportunity to apply for the opening. I told ** that and then she posted it for two days. I applied and waited almost a week until I had to call to be informed that I wasn't qualified because I had a write up in the past 60 days. I had to call to be informed. I had to call to be informed that I wasn't eligible. They didn't even give me an interview. Guess who got the CSS job? Yes, the pre-chosen **.
Not posting the opening and choosing a candidate prior to applications is a clear violation to the Equal Opportunities Act. Also, just for giggles, ** and ** store items under the belt and in the office on truck days to wait until they can use their discounts and store discounts like Friends and Family Day. I have picture proof of this. Any thoughts, guys?

Big Lots advertised a Rubbermaid 35 gallon latching tote for $10.00 in the newspaper flyer and in their store flyer. When I arrived at my local Big Lots store, the tote turned out to be Starlite brand? Upon closer examination of the ad, there is a smaller picture within the ad advertising food containers, which presumably are Rubbermaid. To add insult to injury, the clerk and the manager of the store discovered a shelf sign listing the lids to the 35 gallon "Rubbermaid" tubs included in the $10 price.
I frequently ship many items to missionaries in Europe and have had feedback from them that the Starlite totes crack during shipment, while the Rubbermaid products withstand the various rigors and temperature conditions of overseas shipping. Your ad and shelf signs convey definite false advertising to me. At the very least, I request an explanation concerning this matter. My daughter used to work at this Big Lots that I am writing about. She started at the bottom and worked her way up to associate manager while going to school for her career. She and the previous manager, Patty, and most of all the employees took lots of pride in the store, how it looked and in their sales. Every aisle they had cleaned and all the things in the aisles were related to some degree. Their end caps were always perfect. Since my daughter quit working there to work in her field of choice, I had not been to Big Lots in a very long time. Well being I am disabled and have 26 grandchildren and one great grandchild, I have to shop on a budget and start my Christmas shopping early as some gifts have to be shipped out of state. I had my daughter take me to Big Lots on Oct. 11, 2012 to get a jumpstart on Christmas shopping. We could not believe the store and what a mess it was. There was no organization whatsoever. Juices were on the end cap mixed with clothes. Summer things that did not sell were on end caps. In the aisles were tons of products in their brown shipping boxes just stacked on top of each other, with some falling over and being left on the floor. You could not see what the product was.
I could not go through every aisle with my basket because things were falling off the shelves and there would be emptied baskets left in the middle of the aisle. With me being disabled and I have a hard time walking as it is, the shopping carts helped me walk as they are on wheels, but I could never go straight through an aisle. I found it very hard and frustrating to shop. How can one shop in these conditions? Most stores have their shelves nice and neat with products out of shipping boxes and displayed nicely. Before when Patty was the manager, I knew where everything was and it made sense the end caps would kind of tell me what was down that aisle, but not anymore. They have Halloween mixed with Christmas and summer, clothes mixed with food. Toys were all over the floors, not on shelves where they belong. Even the furniture dept. was a mess that I did not even try to get through there. I have shopped at that store since it was Pic 'N Save long before my daughter was ever born and because I shopped there for years and still later when it became Big Lots. My daughter grew up shopping with me there so it was only fitting she go work there.
She was very upset to see the store in such a mess and was very angry that it was extra work on me and more pain to have to back up to get out of an aisle instead of just being able to go straight through and how the store runs and looks. Sales and the employees' conduct falls on the manager and I believe you should get a new one or bring the previous manager, Patty, back. With as many grandchildren I have, it would have been an easy over $1,000 sale. But since I was in so much pain with me being disabled not being able to get through the aisles, not being able to see what was in the shipping boxes that are stacked on top of each other and falling off the shelves, products hit you as you try to walk down the aisles, I got so frustrated and had my daughter take me out of that store and go somewhere else, so my sale was very low at Big Lots.
I will never be going back there. When one goes shopping, it should be a pleasant experience, not frustrating. And being in more pain trying to navigate through the mess on the floors, having to hunt through the store to find what you are looking for because nothing is where it should be, no type of order, by the registers that were not open, carts loaded past full capacity with go-backs that even made the store look more of a mess and that is in the front of the store that makes your first impression.
The cashiers were both very rude and when we asked the one helping us not to put everything in that one large bag, she ignored us. She put the very heavy item in the bottom of the bag and it was ripping and then she proceeded to put more things on top making it rip more. She never gave us a new bag so it had to be handled very carefully so we do not lose anything or cause anything to break. Well, Big Lots has now lost me and my entire large family, three generations of shopping at Pic 'N Save to Big Lots, as I told all of my family the conditions of the store and my shopping trip that put me in more pain on Facebook. I sincerely hope you look into the mess you have at that Big Lots in Chino, CA on Walnut and Central and consider bringing back the previous staff should they be willing - or get someone who knows how to run a large store.

On February 28, 2012, I purchased a Wilson & Fisher 9 Ft. Market Umbrella (SKU#210020428) for $60.00 at my local Big Lots at 1211 Tower Blvd. Lorain, Ohio. Then, on March 3rd, I exchanged and repurchased this umbrella for $48.00 plus tax with a 20% off discount coupon. I did not use this patio umbrella in snowy March and I did not use this umbrella in showy April. Anyone who lives in Ohio would know that! I did put out this umbrella on May 28th for my Memorial Day picnic. Eight (8) days after, when I put out this umbrella, the metal mechanism button that is used to tilt this umbrella popped out and landed on my glass top patio table.
On June 5th, I took this broken umbrella, the original cover it came in, and my original receipt to my local Big Lots. I was told by the manager that they would not return, refund, nor exchange this item because it was over 30 days since it was purchased. I explained that since this patio umbrella was not used during winter that I would have had no way to know it was defected for two months. I was told to contact BigLots.com. On June 5th, I wrote a letter to BigLotstalk2us.com and explained my situation. Well, after numerous emails back and forth, the end result was that they would not help me and told me to contact YADA TECH at 866-811-0240 as they were the vendor. On June 21, 2012, I called the number provided to me by BigLots.com and YADA TECH told me that they were located in Canada and that they did not provide merchandise to Big Lots in the USA.
So next, I called Wilson & Fisher at 877-539-7436 and they said that they only sell under the name of Court Yard Creations to Big Lots. So, I then started to call Big Lots Corporate number at 614-278-6800. After I left numerous voice mail messages for customer service, I finally asked the operator to connect me to a live person. Josh from customer service answered the phone and I once again told him my situation - that I paid $48.00 for a patio umbrella that lasted eight days. He told me that he was aware of my situation via my emails and that there was nothing he could or would do for me, that I was out of luck, Big Lots buys cheap stuff from overseas, 30-day return policy, etc. He also told me that he was aware that YADA TECH was not a vender for Big Lots. Why I was given that number via email is beyond me.
I told Josh that it was unacceptable for a consumer to pay that kind of money for a defective item and I wanted to be compensated somehow. He started to get very rude with me and said once again, there was nothing he would do for me due to 30-day return policy. I then asked him if he would connect me to his supervisor and to my shock, he said, "No, I will not connect you and I will not tell you the name of my supervisor." There is nothing that they can do for me. I could not believe my ears! I once again asked him for the name and number/extension to his supervisor and he said he cannot give out that information. I told him that I did not want to know the address of his supervisor, I just wanted to know the name and how I could contact this person. He said it was Big Lots policy not to give out this information and that customers were not allowed to talk with a supervisor and that his word was final!
What in the world kind of policy is this? Not be able to talk with a supervisor at customer support. What? Customer support at Big Lots is a joke! You can save some money and get rid of that department. It's useless and rude. As a consumer, I have never ever in my life been so completely dismissed like I have with Big Lots! I fully understand that every store has a return policy and I also understand that there are exceptions too. I wasn't asking for something for nothing. This is completely unfair to allow a customer to make a large ticket priced purchase and not help them out when the item breaks in less than two weeks. Now, I have no patio umbrella for the summer. It is ridiculous that I have had to jump through hoops to try and obtain a refund. This is an exception to your return policy that should have been addressed and resolved properly.
I will be sharing my very expensive and negative experience with Big Lots on YouTube, contacting the Better Business Bureau, as well as telling all of my friends, neighbors, and coworkers of the unfair treatment that I received from Big Lots. This is no way to treat a customer!

So, I took the battery back without a recent, know bear in mind that ever store in Harlan County will not give you money back, but will let you get something else. But they would not even do that.
Now I ask you, what happens when the gifts I got for everyone else there do not fit or they do not like it, so they are stuck with it? This has never happened to me before while dealing with Big Lots. That is the reason I shop there. But after this I will no longer buy nor shop at the Harlan Big Lots, nor will any of my friends and family. I think what Harlan Big Lots is doing to people is really giving all Big Lots a bad name. 11-06-11 at 10 am. Waited in line for store to open. Walked in, picked up a card that said take to the register. I was trying to buy a 7" Cruz Reader. I had my card, not to worry. However, store had put out about 25 cards and only had about 10-12 units. Looked around the store and went to the register - a lady in front of me told me that they only had one left which she got. That was her second one because the store manager let the woman in front of her buy 5 when he had told her the limit was one.
When I complained to the manager, he said his boss told him to let her have them. #1 why put out cards if you don't have that many units. When I complained about the cards, he told me that he had only worked there 3 weeks. Why fill the slots with cards when you know you don't have that many units. I could have gotten one if I had not been looking around your store to spend more unnecessary money. In the future, put out a card per unit that you have. I shop at Big Lots probably every week. This will surely cut down on my visits.

On October 23, Big Lots advertised a Cuisinart Thermal Coffeemaker with gold-tone filter basket for $49. Being a bit disabled, I sent my stepson to their Webster store to purchase it. A store employee pointed out the "advertised" maker on a shelf and he purchased it using his bank debit card. However, when he brought it to me it was not the one advertised, a glass pot instead of a stainless steel thermal pot. The maker had been sacked at checkout and being a windy day, evidently a gust blew away the receipt tucked under his thumb on the way to putting it in his car. Now Big Lots refuses to exchange it for the advertised model nor even give a store credit. We've never asked for cash.

Due to my work and travel schedule, I was unable to return the items before the 30-day time period was up. I have supported Big Lots with my hard-earned income since 2005 and the lack of action and the way that I have been given the runaround after trying to return a defective product may keep me from shopping any more at this chain.
Corporate Customer Service advised me to contact the producer of the product, SureFit. SureFit advised me to contact Big Lots due to the fact that I did not purchase the item directly from SureFit. Big Lots' Customer Service said that they would send an email to the merchandiser that works with the producer, SureFit, and they would follow-up with me via email or phone. Six weeks later, I have not received any follow-up at all from either side. This prompted me to send an email via the BigLots.com website.
The automated response created a need to speak with customer service one more time to see if anyone cared that I was an unhappy customer. I spoke with a representative at the corporate customer service center, nothing can be done due to procedure. Yes, procedures are in place for a purpose, but I've seen procedures be exempted to salvage a customer relationship. I will never shop here again and will tell all of my friends of this experience. This was a horrible customer experience! I worked too hard to provide my hard-earned income to a company that will not stand behind the products in its stores beyond 30 days.

I've been a shopper at Big Lots for the past 1 1/2 and I'm a very pleased customer. There stores have a great selection of merchandise at a reasonable price. Now, with their return policies, I must admit, they are pretty harsh, but needless to say, all you slackers must understand that its a policy. Those people have a job to do and must follow it.
It is the customers problem if you don't understand, read the policy, or just don't give a **. It would be nice to be able to return things after 6 months or so, but I still don't know of a store that does that. They have every right to follow its policies.
So people, deal with it and understand it. Read the policies for every store you go to. If you don't like it then get out and shop somewhere else. Business is business. Mind you, I'm an accountant who is very picky. But I love Big Lots.

I also couldn't find this certain item and no one else could either. Then we found the Crayola easel which looked like the ad so I got it, found out I was overcharged so went back to store and they told me there was one in picture for $20 and one in store for $40. They didn't have the $20 one in ad so they put $40 one out but charged everyone full price $40. I said that's false advertisement and they said that's what they're supposed to do.
I called headquarters and the guy wouldn't give me his name but he worked in Consumer Relations in Columbus, Ohio and he said there's nothing he can do because just because it's in paper doesn't mean it will be in store. I told him it was holiday and weekend. He just said, "What do you want me to do?" There is nothing to be done.
I will never shop there again and that morning at least 15 people walked out mad and with nothing in hand. This is the second time in two years this store has done this. I feel this is false advertisement and we as consumers put our trust in the store to carry what the ad says. I could understand if they were sold out but they didn't even put it on floor or carry it. On November 25, 2009 around 11 a.m. I bought a Net10 phone at Big Lots store on Sunnymead and Heacock in Moreno Valley 92553. The individual in cashier no. 1 did not give me a receipt. The phone did not have any of the plastic seals that one is told to remove when new and the phone did not work, thus I took the phone back to the store on November 27. Manager Jose told me they would have to check the record to find the transaction, but when I gave him all the details of the sale such as time, cashier number, etc., his attitude changed, and said that I had also to verify the purchase with the cashier.
On Wed. Dec. 2, 2009, around 1:30 and then again around 2:30, I went back and Manager Jamie said she could not find the transaction and the supervisor could neither. The cashier verified that she remembered me buying and paying for the phone and said that she gave me a receipt because she always gave receipts, yet, as I was standing there she was fiddling with a piece of paper and then said, "Oh, that man just left without his receipt..."
I reported this to Manager Jamie who gave me a phone to call (951-247-7590) but that phone was on a "fax" mode until Dec. 4 around 2:45 pm. Later, I was not able to get through until close to 3 pm. After I had reported this incident to the Big Lots store by email asking them to please investigate why so many discrepancies occurred in the employee's statements and demeanor concerning this simple transaction.
Although I just wanted to exchange the faulty phone to a working one, now I need my $32.61 refund back since I was forced to buy a new working phone somewhere else. What made me suspicious about this event is that when I entered another store that same afternoon, an alarm went off as if the phone had been activated to do so, but when I had been at Big Lots for four times with the phone in hand, no alarm sounded. I think that if this is being done to me, probably the same has been done to others and it should be investigated. It appears that the store sells used returned faulty phones hoping that some final customer will keep it without getting his refund. I notice that they had only one Net10 phone with the cover seal that one is supposed to remove upon purchase, but they had about five without the seal, apparently phones that had been returned.
There are three facts that evidence the employees' actions to have been done in a very structured situation: 1) Manager Jose's Nov. 27 change of attitude when I gave him details of the purchase as for example the exact time, which I knew because when I left the Big Lots store, I went to the Superior Market about a block away and bought some bread; their receipt said I bought it at 11:39 a.m., thus I deduced that I had been at Big Lots about 11 a.m. 2) Manager Jamie stating on Wed. Dec. 2, 2009, around 1:30 that she could not find the transaction on the computer. I told her that perhaps Manager Jose removed the transaction because his attitude had been very curt. She told me to check back with her around 2 pm. Around 2:30, when I went back to the store, the manager said that she still could not find the transaction contradicting the cashier's statements that she remembered me paying for the phone.
3) The cashier getting agitated claiming that she "always" gave customers a receipt when getting caught with a receipt in her hand that belonged to a customer. 4) The phone without sounding an alarm the four times I had been to Big Lots and other stores on Nov. 25, 27, and Dec. 2, at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. while making an effort to exchange the phone. Yet on Dec. 2, after I left Big Lots being very upset because I felt something was terrible wrong, as manager Jose perhaps removing the transaction from the computer, I went to other stores around 3:30, 3:55, etc., the "phone" caused the alarms to go off every time I entered and exited a store, a situation made to happen probably in an attempt to intimidate me into not pursuing a refund. I know the approximate times the situations occurred because the receipts I have from my purchases have the dates and times that remind me what happened when and where.
Today December 7, 2009, I called the store around 2:30 pm and manager Jose left me on hold for a long time; I called back around 2:45, and was told to call at 3:15 because they have had no time to check the transactions and they had to check with "Loss Prevention". When I called, I was told to call back at 4:15, but when I did I was told that they were out to lunch and to call at 4:45. When I did, the phone had been placed on "fax" mode and I got only the fax modem sound. I hope you can help me get my refund somehow. I am tired of having people take advantage of the unsuspecting public every chance they get. Thank you.

I was under the impression it was marked down as the summer season ended and all the Christmas decor was up. When I checked out, it rang $99.99. The cashier said that didn't sound right, so he had another person that worked there verify. The cashier was going to give a discount but needed manager's approval. The manager, Lorenzo, went to check the price and I had my husband go and show him where we saw it as there was a line behind us. Then Lorenzo said there would be no discount since the price tag said fire pit but had a brand name so the price was right. I expressed that since the tag was on the display, they should honor the price as I have seen this with other customers at this store. He said how does he know that an employee put it there.
But when my husband, the store clerk, and the manager went to go check where the tag was, all the other fire had tags and were all the same price. Why didn't the first manager do that? Why did it have to take me wanting to complain to get me a refund? I am just mainly upset that he made it seem as if I was doing something fraudulent when he made the remark how does he know one of his employees put the tag there in front of a line full of customers. I received Big Lots advertisement on Wednesday morning, July 15, in The Harrison Daily Times newspaper. The ad was to cover the period July 15 through July 19. I was the first customer through the door at 9 AM on July 15. I wanted to purchase two plastic trash cans (33 gallons in size) on sale for $9.00 each. I was told by the manager that they had been sold out for two or three days. I said, "How can this be, since this is the first day of your ad?" He tried to give me 20% off a 45-gallon trash can that was in the ad priced 24% off. This is a new store in town, but I will not be able to recommend it to my neighbors.

I was turned into a collection agency, Clergy, by Big Lots, when I was declined a check at Garden Ridge for $35.66. I spent 2 hours on the phone with them on Thursday, June 4. After waiting on hold, to find the reason the check was declined, for one hour,It turned out that the check was refused, due to them being unable to locate the bank, which was Bank of America, which is written on the check with my name and address. I was charged $30.00 for the $58.74 May 27 check. I went to the bank the following day, where the manager said the check never made it to the bank. She said Big Lots lost the check, and turned me into Clergy for collection.
I drove 25 miles back to Katy, to talk to the Big Lots manager, but was denied access to the phone, and told me he does not know where the check went. He gave me the number of their Headquarters office, but would not let me use the phone. I missed time from work, since he acted uninterested in my concern. I was left to deal alone with Clergy, who put me on hold transferring from department to department, listening to a recorder. He was unhelpful and went back to work. I tried to use my cell, but the battery was dead.
Before, I noticed the employees were making mistakes earlier, when they are adding the bank numbers. I believe his employee sent the incorrect number to the bank. Clergy located me instantly, and stopped all my checking privileges. I was never contacted, until I was turned in to collections. All the info was on the check, if there was a problem, even the bank name. It was miscued, so the bank never got the check from Big Lots.
I had to open a new banking account, to have access to checks, with a 7 to 10 day hold, so I am unable to pay my bills. Clergy is a nightmare. They will put you on hold, then change departments. I had over $3,700 in my account, but turned was in to Clergy, because of his clerk making the mistake. My checks could bounce, and no checks can be written on my Bank of America account, so I cannot pay my bills.

I went to Big Lots and made a purchase totaling $70.00. The clerk called this place and said my check wouldn't go through. She handed me a piece of paper and it had Certegy's name and number on it. I called them and they said they didn't know why my check failed. I asked to talk to the manager and explained I have never had anything like this before. She told me to send in my voided check, which has all my information on it. On a separate piece of paper, I wrote the date of my check and the date my account was opened. I sent a copy of my driver's license - front and back. Then it was a couple of days later and I was at our local K-Mart. They refused my check due to Certegy. Now everywhere I go in my town I can't write a check. This is ridiculous.
I have never had a problem before. Now I have to use my debit card and I forget to write the amounts down. That is why I have carbons on my checks. I feel this is illegal what they are doing to the hundreds of people out here in the nation. They have no right to tell someone my checks won't cash when I have the money in my account. I am so mad. I want to know if there is some way we can stop them from this. It is not right.

My first visit to the store was an hour and a half trip for me. I went in to purchase a gazebo, which I had called about prior to making the trip there to make sure they had it in stock. When I got there, not only were they very nasty, they also said they did not have any more in stock and they were pushing me to buy a more expensive one in the store. Also, many of the items in the store… Even though they are the same item, they are marked different prices; they apply their own bar code numbers on the item and they are very different in price. When I spoke to the manager in the store, they tried to convince me that they were different items, when they were not. I have tried to contact their customer service department and they have not yet returned a call to me.

I made a purchase on 3/7/09 of $32.03. A week later, I returned the items and I was given a credit of only $20. I purchased that day items valued at $9.94. I was given a $20 Cash credit and was refunded $10.06. The store owes me $12.57. I spoke to the manager and was told that because their receipt record that day did not show an overage, they could not do anything. They said that they had the ticket for $32.03 but there was nothing they could do because I came in too late. I am appealing to you for a refund of $12.57. Please advise me if you can help me with this problem.

We went to Big Lots with my retired father-in-law to find him a recliner that would be sturdy. We had spent $1400 in furniture there over the Summer and we got a great deal and loved the quality of the furniture. Eduardo showed us just the recliner my father-in-law was looking for, but at $350, it was a bit more than he could afford. Eduardo then told us about the VIP program. If we signed up, we could come back on Sunday and get 20% off of the chair. So we all confirmed with Eduardo that the $350 chair would be $280 on Sunday with this card. He said Yes. So we signed up for the card and were out the door.
We called on Saturday and got the dimensions of the chair, and realizing that it would not fit in our Tahoe, called my brother that lives 70 miles away from this particular store to meet us on Sunday with his truck to transport the chair. So the entire family (my husband, two toddlers, father-in-law, mother, brother, nephew and me) showed up to Big Lots on Sunday to get the wonderful chair. Eduardo was actually there at the door and remembered us. He smiled and led us back to the chair. Now, however, the chair had a $400 price tag on it. Eduardo did not understand why we were so upset. Even with the 20% discount, the chair was now $320, not the $280 promised. So we asked for the Furniture manager. We got Melvin.....
Melvin insisted on telling us that poor Eduardo had forgotten that the chair was set to go up on Saturday, and that it was an honest mistake. I told Melvin that while I was glad that Eduardo had not lied to me, his loss of memory still led him to promise us that the chair would be $280. Melvin then told us all to wait outside the front door of the store and he would find a manager to help us. So, now the family is standing outside of Big Lots waiting for a manager.
Enter Dan, the manager. We tell Dan of our plight, and he says that he has spoken to Eduardo, and that he said that the chair would have a discount, but off of the ticket price on Sunday. We had already established from Eduardo and Melvin, that we were told 20% off of the $350 listed on Friday (making it still $280). Dan then tells us that the best he can do is give it to us for the $350 that it was listed for on Friday. WHAT??? Now it is $30 more than if we took the 20% off of the $400....this chair was just getting more and more expensive as we went along.
When my husband told Dan the mathematician manager that this was even more money than was quoted ten minutes earlier, he told us to wait there outside the store and he would come back with a final deal. Boy, were we suckers. Now all 8 of us sat outside of the Big Lots waiting for Dan to come out for 45 minutes. Then the store closed. Then he locked the doors and never came out. He wouldn't even make eye contact as he stood at the doors right in front of us and locked them. What a coward.
When I called the store from the parking lot to ask for the manager, I was told that the manager's name was Cecilia (and a refusal to give the last name) and that she was not there. Funny, I am pretty sure that Dan and Cecilia are not the same name...much less the same sex. So here we sit without a chair and dumbfounded at the lies, rudeness, bad math, and cowardice of the staff at Big Lots. Well, you just lost a good customer, and everyone within earshot of me.....and the rest of the family of mine you left standing outside of your doors.

On Jan. 21, '09, I purchased a watch at the Big Lots store in Canoga Park, CA. There was a table with an assortment of watches near the register and that is where I found the watch I liked. Most of the watches were advertised and priced at $5.00. When the clerk tried to scan the watch I had selected, she was unsuccessful and therefore grabbed another item of the same table to scan. It read Ladies Watch Gift set and scanned at $10.00. I asked her if she was sure it was $10.00 since I was under the impression that these watches sold for $5.00 but she insisted that the particular one I had chosen was $10.00.
Well enough, I liked the watch and took it home. I took it out of the case and tried to set it to the correct time, only to find out that it did not work (dead battery, I assume) At that moment, I decided to return it. The next day, with watch and receipt in hand, I went back to the store. Much to my surprise, the cashier encountered a problem and sought the help of the store manager. According to the store manager, I did not purchase the watch at their store. I was dumbfounded since clearly I had the receipt which showed time and place and purchase of a ladies watch gift set. The store manager remained firm. According to her, my particular watch was a $5.00 watch, and the scan used calling it a gift set did not match any of the items they carried. Therefore, I could not return it nor ask for my money back. I appealed to her sense of logic, imploring her to think how on earth I could produce a receipt (just dated one day earlier) from their store for a watch gift set together with a faulty watch in a gift box if I had not purchased it there. My complaint fell on deaf and very uncooperative ears.
I asked to speak to her superior and she gave me a non-working number along with a name. I called the number while still in the store and alerted her that the number was no good. She was uninterested in helping me resolve the issue any further. I have tried to contact the corporate offices of Big Lots, with my first letter of complaint dated 01/24/09 and the subsequent letter one week later, but I have not had any response whatsoever. Please understand that this is now a matter of principle. If in fact, the watch was a $5.00 item, I was originally overcharged 100%. By not being able to scan the item and grabbing any old item off the table to accomplish the task, the clerk on the day of the purchase was exhibiting negligence. The store manager failed miserably in correcting a previous wrong by making the customer (the injured party) feel as if she was somehow guilty of fraudulent behavior.
Upon request, the store manager did not give correct information to contact the next person within the chain of command for conflict resolution. Two attempts at reaching a spokesperson within the Corporate Division of Big Lots have yielded no results. This kind of gross negligence of consumer rights can not be tolerated. I promised the store manager as much as I promised myself that I would not let this rest until the matter was settled to my satisfaction.

I bought a table, got it home and it had no pedestal to support it. I called the store, talked to Billy, a manager, and he said to come back in the AM and he would leave a note telling them to give me the part. I arrived the next day and well that's where the problems began. They apparently sell tabletops and the pedestal as two separate items. No one told me, tried to sell me anything. I was mad because I had to buy the pedestal. I called Home office because I was angry. I did not yell or curse and the woman on the other line hung up. Here is my advice to not shop Big Lots because you cannot fix stupid.

Here's an email I sent to BIG LOTS: Dear Big Lots, Your store located at 5227 Lakewood Blvd, Lakewood, CA 90712, (562) 529-7947 - is getting out of hand with improper handling of pricing. Yesterday I shopped for a number of Christmas discounted items, only to find that when I went to check out the products were not discounted by the register. The holiday items were split between edible and personal (colognes, etc.). The food items were all on one aisle with a sales discount sign.
At the register I was told that NONE of the items I had were discounted - even though I pointed out where they were stocked. I know these food items were holiday things as I'd bought them just before Christmas and they were not the usual things in the store. This store does a very poor job of separating discount and non-discounted holiday products. And it makes for a bad scene at the registers. This store is not good when it comes to putting proper pricing on each item or on the shelves. The store I was reporting is located here: Big Lots, 5227 Lakewood Blvd Lakewood, CA 90712, (562) 529-7947, http://biglots.com.
Here's the response I got back yesterday: Good afternoon. Thank you for contacting us regarding your recent experience at our Lakewood, CA Big Lots store. I apologize for your inconvenience. I have forwarded your email and contact information on to the District Manager of that store so that he may address these concerns with the appropriate people. Thank you again for taking your time to send us this feedback. Have a nice day.

I went to the clearance section of Big Lots. I noticed they had a coffee maker on clearance for $50.00 and an Ipod radioalarm on clearance for $30.00. Both items had a green round sticker on the box with the number 50 & 30 (50 on the coffeemaker & 30 on the Ipod radioalarm). I also saw a baby monitor with a green sticker on the box with the number 8. I asked my daughter in law to ask the cashier for the price. The cashier answered $85.00. I then went up to her and ask the same question. The cashier said $85.00.
I asked her why did it have a number 8? Her reply was, the number 8 is a code for the store to know where it came from. I then said, if the coffeemaker has the number 50 for $50.00 and the number 30 for the Ipod radioalarm for $30.00, then why doesn't the number 8 stand for $8.00. She refuse to grant the price of the item.
I then looked for a manager and I asked her the same question. She practically was trying to tell me I was crazy for thinking she was going to sell me the item for $8.00 when the item cost $85.00. She then said it was an error and it will be fixed to represent $85.00.
What happened to customer service ettiquet? If they made the mistake why couldn't I get the merchandise for the $8.00? Other companies would have done it!!!

Last year around Sept or Oct, Big Lots had their summer closeout sale. I bought what I thought was a very good patio set, of which I was going to take to my home in Mexico. The set was fairly pricey even for Big Lots. We took the set home, put it together and used it briefly. The table we did not use, it was too big for our patio. It stayed stored in it's original box until Nov when our Son and Daughter-in-law needed a table. We suggested taking the glass table and using it as a dining room table. Which they have been using for the last 8 months.
In the past few months we have moved, most our furniture is in storage, waiting to be shipped to Mexico, or is being used by our Son and his wife. What disturbs me is that 2 weeks ago my son called me to tell me that the glass on the table of ours had exploded for no reason at all. My Daughter-in-Law had just gotten up to let their puppy outside and was standing in the doorway, when the table exploded, she said there was nothing on the table at all, it just went to pieces.
My Son heard the explosion, and got up out of bed to find out what happened, and saw all the glass everywhere. My Daughter-in-Law gets up at 4:00am. There was no reason for this to break like this. I am just glad my Son's pets weren't hurt and neither was my Daughter-in-Law. But, we are out a table in Mexico, and since it is a set..... All our paper work for the table is in storage.

The rest of the items in the oven, my dressing and my rice were ruined because of the glass.
I am in extreme pain from the burns, and I'm not sure I have all the glass out of my legs and my feet. It's very hard to get the glass out because of the burns.
