The humane society has recommended this food. Haven't had any problems thus far. Just started the adult indoor from the kitten version. Will get back to my reviews whether good or bad.

All these complaints for Blue Buffalo, Hill's and Nutro sound the same. Same illnesses, same symptoms! Something fishy going on. We as humans die of certain diseases, and we don't blame the burger we ate or the food. Cats and dogs can get illnesses over time. It's not the food… it’s YOU! Fake reviews indeed. BTW my cats thrive on Big Macs! PS: My cats don't eat Big Macs. But they thrive on it. Do you believe me?

After reading all the negative reviews on this site, I just wanted to express how happy I have been with Science Diet for over two decades. My current three dogs did just fine when the formula changed, and I have had no problems with their health their entire lives.

I used Science Diet dry dog food since 2009 when I got my first Toy Fox Terrier starting with the canned and then dry puppy food and moved up to the next age for dogs after age 1. I also used it for the next 2 dogs I got, a Toy Fox Terrier and a Yorkie. They all did great on it. Due to a chronic illness I suffer from, I had to find very special new homes for my two Terriers but kept my Yorkie. Sometime around the end of 2013, I noticed she became very lethargic, would not eat or drink much and started having accidents and she was housebroken. She had another accident and I noticed it had blood in it.
I took her to the vet and they put her on antibiotics. She got better but in about 2 weeks, same thing again, but with a fever and respiratory problems so I took her back to the vet and after X-rays and a urine culture, the vet said she had an extremely enlarged thickening of her bladder and did not understand what could have caused it. She also had an E. coli infection which the vet felt was not causing the thick lining of her bladder - Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory meds for a month. I read while searching for causes of her problem, where Science Diet ID Dry was causing kidney failure and other health issues from contamination of two chemicals so threw it away as I had just switched her to that kind and that's when I realized she started having problems. The Science Diet canned was suppose to be okay so switched her to that. She still continued to not do well so I now have her on a new Holistic dog food and she has not been sick anymore.
This makes me angry that she could have died and that it may have done permanent damage to her kidneys and bladder. I trusted this brand since it is sold at almost every vet office and thought it was a high quality dog food. If you start researching the ingredients that (are) listed, it really is not a high quality dog food. Very disappointed that I was trying to keep my dogs on something healthy and paying more for what I thought was a good quality dog food :(

I am so upset with what seems to me to be a money maker for your company and the vets.. Dog food that I can only buy through prescription... Come on... it only makes cents for you and the vets.. This is just crazy... Lost another customer.... Please explain this action if you can... Like I said I think it only makes cents and not sense...

I am going to make my story to the point as much as I can. 3yr old lab eating SD Lite perfectly healthy..... THEN THIS: Starts showing signs of bloat, vomits, agitated, gacking, drooling, licking, stomach extending. Dog is having normal bowel movements. Was at night many hours after his dinner. Sickness lasting several or more hours. He did not throw up after eating which is deceiving. 2 emergency vet visits. First one they operated due to gas and unidentified objects. (My dog licks and eats things to make himself throw up.) They gave him meds and changed him to SD gastro food. Second visit... extreme gas. Many tests and 3,000 dollars later, they didn't find anything wrong. Vet said some form of Pica (which I knew was not). Told to keep diary and on 24 hr watch.
Diary showed: Normal bowel movements, every 4 or so days he would get sick. He only got sick at night many hours after eating. Was normal with normal appetite all day. Fast forward: He went 19 days with slowly being taken off all the meds and still on SD gastro. Decided to wean him off of the Gastro and back on SD Lite (I have two other dogs that eat it) so I gave him a handful mixed in with gastro.... That night he was sick again!!!! I have been watching this dog like a hawk. The only thing it could have been was the SD Lite. I am taking all my dogs off SD all together. The trouble it put my dog through... the stress and worry it put me through makes me want to scream... not including the over 3,000.00 in vet bills. I have been using SD for over 20 years and felt assured my dogs would be healthy... little did I know.

My Springer Spaniel a very active dog has ate Science Diet last two years and not had a problem. I bought a new bag approx March 13, 2014. I noticed the dog food had a strong almost like vitamin supplement smell. Just not sure but did not think much of it. However, dog has been vomiting and lethargic. At first, I thought dog ate something outside but after she started drinking a lot more water than normal, vomiting, and becoming lethargic I thought I should check online for any recalls or other pet owners with problems. Looks like there is a problem. Something is just not right and wish I had went with my gut when I first thought the food smelled unusual.
Reviewed March 20, 2014
I believe that the bag of Science Diet dog food I bought beginning of March was contaminated and made my dogs very ill. They both had the same symptoms of lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting, fevers and they would not touch their food. They are both labs and LOVE to eat so this was very unusual. I did not suspect the food at first, but my lab Leo kept pushing his bowl toward us when we tried to feed them. We would literally hand feed it to them and make them eat, not realizing we were making it worse. They would smell it and walk away.
Once I determined it was the food I immediately bought a new brand of food and they gobbled it up. I know you are suppose to transition them on new food but I was not about to give them anymore of it after reading the 218 other complaints on this site of others experiencing the same problems, and symptoms with their beloved animals. All of these seem to have been bought since January of this year (2014) and so I contacted Science Diet. They were sure to inform me it is not the food. I do not feel as if I was taken seriously and am in fear of others who may have to endure this problem as more bags are bought. They said I was the only one to make a complaint, however several people on this site said they had and I wrote on their facebook page and a couple others chimed into to say their dogs were having issues and did not realize it could be the food. I will not buy their products any longer.

In the last 18 days I have purchased 36 cans of SD WD for my diabetic dogs, the recipe for the food must have changed between each 12 cans I purchased. One set was EXTREMELY wet and mushy, the next was thicker but didn't seem to have all the regular ingredients. I just opened the 2nd of the last 12 cans and they have both been so dry that I had to throw them out, they are not expired so I can only assume that quality control is non-existent at Hills. I'm currently lobbying my vet for new prescriptions for a different diabetic food. It would be easier to just buy more SD food but I'm not willing to risk my dogs' health for my convenience. Anyone else having these issues?

I have called in to report the problem my dog and cat are having because it’s identical and they are both on Hill's Science Prescription Diet foods. I hope others are doing the same. It is important to do more than discuss it here. People need to report the problem to Hills Science so they can address it asap. Also report it to the store and to your vet so they are aware of it.
The issue I am having is loss of appetite. My cat was already severely underweight and also is diabetic so this is probably something she will not survive. It seemed Saturday morning it was a wait-and-see, but by last night she seems to have begun dying. My dog refuses the Hills Science and was eating treats or ground turkey, but within a day refused that, too. Because he refuses it, we can't get his meds into him either. We gave him his meds wrapped in sliced turkey. I'm heartbroken right now.

I picked up a new bag of SciDiet Light on Friday 2/28/14 from Petco. Tonight I opened the bag and noticed a weird clear plastic-looking substance in the bag. I thought it was probably part of the bag that had fallen inside during packaging, and although alarmed, grabbed a paper towel and reached inside to remove the 'plastic'. UGH. It turned out to be a slimy, sticky substance that I removed and dropped in the sink. I went back to the bag to see if anything else was in there and was horrified to see more of the slimy crud as well as three large winged insects climbing up from the bottom of the bag!!! I closed it immediately to keep the bugs from escaping then put the slimy crud back into the bag (and was thrilled to see even more bugs crawling around in the bag....) zipped the top, rolled the top down and securely taped it shut. I plan to return it to the store tomorrow!!!
I had purchased two bags on Friday, and my dog's bowl was empty so I decided to open the second and see if it had the same problem. It did not. But, had I not looked into the first bag before filling his dish he would have at the very least eaten infested food and most likely the slime-crud as well. Tomorrow I'm getting my money back and changing foods immediately. From the posts here - it seems like something is wrong at the factory and SciDiet needs to fix it NOW.

My dog has ate SD for years. I just bought a new bag a couple weeks ago and after reading all the posts I am now positive that the bag I bought is bad. He never misses a meal and from the time I opened the bag he wanted nothing to do with it. He ate it and got really sick. After a couple of weeks I bought a different food and he seems to be doing much better.

I purchased a bag of the dry and 4 cans of the wet S/D food this week. The vet told me to absolutely keep this AWAY from my other healthy cat. That alone made me weary to feed it. My cat has bladder stones caused by Natural Balance LID, which recently moved to the diamond factories, surprise surprise, and was prescribed this food as a last resort to surgery. She would NOT eat the wet food. She tried to cover it, and would not even eat her favorite food on the same plate three inches away. Worst, when she ate less than a tablespoon of the dry food, even mixed with her normal food, she vomited. And I don't mean just a little. She threw up seven times in less than a few minutes and to the point that she was vomiting white foam.
I saw somewhere that this formula could cause stomach upset on an empty stomach. How are you supposed to feed it if they aren't hungry?? And no food should cause vomiting within ten minutes and certainly not the violent vomiting I witnessed. She is suffering enough and in trying to help her I have just made her worse with this experience. Now when I try to feed her she runs and hides. Fix your food! You are one of the only companies that sells these prescription diets. I pray a reputable company soon figures out the need for a quality line of prescription care and puts this company out of business.

Back in November 2013, I tried SD I/D for my GSD because the vet wanted him on it because of diarrhea. He was in good health at the age of 13 1/2, but after eating SD I/D he started coughing. I knew this was not normal. He started laying around and he was not that type of dog even at his age... This happened suddenly after eating this CRAP!!! He started hanging his head low and could not walk at all. His body temp. dropped low and the vet came over and said he has severe bloat and I didn't know. I wish I knew the symptoms so I could of got to the vet sooner. With bloat they could die very fast.
The vet said that there was nothing they could do. It was too far gone and my beloved Max needed to be put down because he was dying in pain. I am crying as I am writing this and I saw the pain he was in and I feel so bad that I feed him this FOOD! I knew not to feed him this Science Diet because I NEVER would feed him this. He always got homemade meals with high quality dry. Please be careful when feeding this food!!! If anything DO NOT USE THIS FOOD!!!

My four dogs have been eating Science Diet Advanced Fitness Original Formula for the past year or so and have been fine. After purchasing a new bag tonight however, they are vomiting. I am very concerned. The timing and correlation seems so clear that I wanted to research if anyone else was having this problem - if there was a recall or known poisoning of the food or anything, and found this site. I'm going to switch to another brand of food to see if it alleviates the problem. They better investigate what's going on. I will be extremely upset if there are any longer term or more serious effects.

We have fed our schnauzer Hills Science Sensitive Skin for about 2 years without any noticeable problems until I read these posts. He did have blood on his stools sometimes, now that I think back about it. But since he wasn't really suffering in any other way we thought it was nothing to be alarmed about (and, it's also worth mentioning that he did have diarrhea and vomiting off and on but we never associated it with the food. Our thinking was that just because the brand was recommended by his former vet).
So, it never raised a red flag to us until recently when we bought the latest which is the new and improved batch. The pet store did not carry the older versions anymore. He never seemed to want to eat it. His food bowl would sit uneaten for 3-4 hours then, maybe, as he got hungrier and hungrier throughout the day it would slowly disappear. So, that bag was painstakingly consumed and we bought another one. This time, he didn't seem to care for it at all but we were used to that kind of reaction anyway, based on that first bag. He will eat it sooner or later, we thought.
The first bowl of it that we gave him he vomited. Okay, maybe that was just something else he might have scrounged off the ground during our walk so gave him broth and rice for a day then went back to Hills Science Sensitive Skin after he got better. He again vomited it up, had diarrhea and became very lethargic. This was when I knew definitely that his condition and the food had some connection since we never feed him anything else but 1-2 treats a day (and those days are very rare).
So, I am now taking him to a new vet to be looked at and see the extent of the damage that Hills Science Diet has done to him, chucking out the remainder of that 15-lb bag (less 2 cups), and adding my complaints about this food product to your site. I am not really the type to worry much about my dog but after having read all these posts, I am now beginning to think that my schnauzer has been suffering all this time and I didn't really know. Thank you very, very much for all your postings!

I first noticed my cat asking for his daily night time wet cat food sooner than usual. Then I noticed he was trying to eat people food. I could not understand what was going on. I usually have the kids feed our cat, but today I fed him and noticed he has not been eating his Science Diet cat food (The new formula). I called the place I bought it from complaining that I got a bad bag of food. Then I did some research and found this site. Thank you to everyone who posted. I will be taking my cat to the vet tomorrow to make sure no damage has occurred because I fed him this food.
This was a trusted food we used for 4 years, I can not believe they have hurt animals like this. I ran and warned our animal shelter and bought them new bags of another brand of cat food. I feel lucky that he did not really eat the food, but so mad because my cat has been starving, due to a dangerous junk product. Has anyone tried to visit the Science Diet website? I have and weirdly can't get on, this tells me they are fully aware they have poisoned our pets!

Used Science Diet Adult Formula for a year & a half with not too many problems for my beloved 13 year old Maine Coon Leo. Just bought a bag of the "new & improved" formula. 2 weeks ago he began violently vomiting alternately, clear & foamy white, also uncountable trips to the box, disgusting diarrhea, sometimes mixed with what appeared to be blood! Thinking it was a tainted canned food treat, I stupidly continued feeding him this, and the conditioned worsened. He got a completely disturbing look to his face, eyes and walk, weird crying, etc. Found him in a corner of the basement hiding as a dying animal will sometimes do.
Thank the Lord I found this website. Saw all the same symptoms these other unfortunate people & pets have endured and immediately stopped feeding this crap. I fed Leo Starkist Tuna water (If you are trying to save your Cat that had Renal failure symptoms, It’s works like a miracle, Please Try it) which hydrated him and overnight he improved! I am now feeding only Fresh pet chicken formula. Not a single vomiting episode since, and well formed stools are now the norm! He is now mostly back to his energetic playful self and now loves this food.
PLEASE people, don’t feed your animals this SD stuff. There is Obviously a serious problem here. My wife called the Science Diet Co. direct, and the representative claimed this was the FIRST phone call or complaint they had received?! Shame on these "people" for lying and misrepresenting this food to us and any other distraught people who are looking for answers!

Started a new bag in mid-January, "New and Improved" Formulation, which we had been using for years (well, not the New and Improved). The 3 cats walked away from it. While having one cat walk away is not that uncommon (cats... they are so picky sometimes), 3 is unusual. Came back from work, food had been eaten. Shortly thereafter, Ziggy, the smallest cat (he is a very lean guy) was salivating seriously, chest was soaked, he was listless, was trying to drink unsuccessfully. He threw up water.
By Sunday he was very sick, so off to vet ER. He was severely dehydrated, and had some sort of bowel blockage. He was cleaned out, re-hydrated, had signs of kidney failure, pancreatitis, and gastrointestinal inflammation. Vet wondered about any changes at home, thinking cat may have consumed something poisonous. By Tuesday Zig was recovering, so came home. He was given SD that evening and by morning, back to serious drooling, lethargy, vomiting. And now Jackson was doing serious salivation, was found on a comforter soaked with a large circle of drool. Off to regular vet with both.
A third cat, Ernie, also had started mild drooling. Finally a vet from the ER clinic, who is a personal friend of one of us, took Zig in for a full hard look, as a favor, using Zig as a "demo" patient for instructional purposes. Included an ultrasound, more tests, and rehydration. Same problems as before. About this time, one of us came across this website. Zig, normally a very lean cat, was by now a bag of bones. Stopped the SD, changed food entirely. Zig started improving immediately, and after a week, all are well. Zig is gaining weight. It's the food. The "New and Improved" SD is the path to death, fortunately not for our cats.

I have been feeding my boxer Science Diet all of her life - almost 6 years now. On January 5th, I purchased a new bag of food and within days my dog started to having what I now believe to be adverse reaction to the new bag of food. She began having diarrhea. She is a chow hound and nothing keeps her from finishing a meal, but she began not eating at all. Initially she would take boiled chicken and rice, but eventually turned her nose up to that. I took her to the vet, who sensed she had some abdominal discomfort, but wanted to take a conservative route with antibiotics and a continued bland diet. We went home and began the course of antibiotics; however, she still wouldn't eat, only consuming pieces of chicken I fed her by hand.
Fortunately, she continued to drink. After a week of antibiotics she still was not eating. We took her back in for X-rays, which showed several pockets of gas throughout her intestines. Fearing there could be a potential blockage, we agreed to a series of very expensive barium X-rays. Those removed any question of a blockage but did show severe irritation of the stomach and intestinal tract lining. It was determined her lack of eating was caused by severe nausea and abdominal pain. We continued on several prescriptions to ease the discomfort and nausea in the hopes we could get her to eat while the irritation healed. Another week went by and she was back on the chicken and rice and seeming to be on the mend. After a few days of eating almost regularly I reintroduced a small amount of her Science Diet Large Breed Light hoping to transition her back to regular food.
By the 3rd feeding she was AGAIN having diarrhea and her appetite decreased. I do not still have the bag with the lot number, but have thrown away the bag and will be changing brands. I really do hope that Hill's will take these accounts seriously and do some investigation. This last month has been completely scary, stressful and a significant financial burden. I URGE ANYONE WHO NOTICES ANY SLIGHT CHANGE IN APPETITE OR BOWEL MOVEMENTS IN THEIR PET THAT IS EATING THIS BRAND TO IMMEDIATELY MAKE A CHANGE. I hope that providing this information will help others avoid the problems myself and my Boxer girl Bliss have suffered through over the last several weeks.

I have had my 13 year old border collie "Benn" on Hill's KD for about three years ago for elevated kidney readings one time around age 9.5 yrs. Once on the KD Benn's kidney readings returned to normal. All was well until we opened a recent bag of food on Saturday, February 8th, 2014. Benn had three meals out of the bag and became very ill. This dog has never missed a meal in his life. He LIVES TO EAT! But there is something wrong with this bag of food. He would not eat it this morning and was almost non-responsive, panting, and I suspect in pain. We went to the vet immediately... CBC, Blood Chem, x-rays all have revealed nothing except a little gas in his stomach. He was running a temp of 104.5, he is extremely lethargic to non-responsive, heart rate up, labored panting type breathing & standing with his head in the corner of the room. He would not drink, would not be affectionate like he normally is and WOULD NOT EAT.
Thank you to everyone else for reporting they had problems because you may have saved my dogs life. I too was trying to hand feed him the kibble and would have kept trying to feed him. I took to the internet to see if there was perhaps a recall on my dog's food, I found your warnings and reviews and I take them seriously because I know my dog has never refused any food ever. He'll eat lettuce for goodness sakes. With all of these problems, I cannot believe that Hills is not taking this seriously and issuing a recall or warning! I will be changing Benn's food and returning the bag he will not eat.
And to Hill's - please be fair to your consumers and act to find out what is going on here. I was a loyal customer for years but something is very wrong. The bag of Hill's KD I purchased has the following written on the bag to identify the batch: best before 05 2015 R 18 9 1458 AM 291. We purchase our dog food from VetSource or Pet Food Direct online. Please if other reviewers and complainants will add this batch info to correctly identify which brands and batches are affected it may help others.

I can only state factually that this dog food is making all 4 of my dogs vomit since I bought the latest bag on 1/17/2014 - but based on other reviews below, I suspect it is producing life-threatening damage internally (see other reviews below which proceed from sickness to death). Within 2 weeks of starting a new bag of Hill's Science Diet for Sensitive Stomach, all 4 of my medium-to-large dogs are gagging and vomiting. The only dog that is fine is the Chihuahua who eats a different brand of dog food that's appropriate to his size and age. My dogs have no variables in their diet, and twice daily each gets 1 cup of dog food, which is 80% another brand, and 20% Hill's Science Diet for Sensitive Stomach (the Hills has always been good, for years, for keeping them regular).
Two weeks after starting a new bag of Hill's Science Diet (bought 1/17/2014), all 4 dogs are vomiting. Based upon the similar reviews below, I think it is fair to conclude that there is something wrong with the new (or at least this batch) of Hill's Science Diet for Sensitive stomach. To be fair, since I just saw on this forum that there's deadly product being sold and fed to our pets, but I have NOT had a chance to take my dog off the Hill's Science Diet, watch them stop vomiting, and then return them to the Hill's Science Diet and see the problem return (and my heart bleeds for those who have done this - clearly the people below have proven that this release of Hill's Science Diet can kill). I am promptly putting my dogs on the other brand which has always been 80% of their diet, and will report back the results in a few days. Unfortunately, as always, I think it will be difficult if not impossible to prove a vendor responsible, people can always claim variables in your pet's environment and health.
MAIN OBSERVATION: I think the fact that I always proportioned my dogs food as 80% other brand (Hundenflocken Gold) and 20% Hill's Science Diet for Sensitive Stomach is why they have lasted 2 weeks just vomiting, and not advancing to lethargy, passing blood, and worse.
ADVICE TO ALL CAT AND DOG OWNERS: Diversify (like people do on the stock market) your pet's food to a MIXTURE of 2 pet foods combined - in this way, I believe any risk of a bad batch of food will be LESS harmful and buy you more time to understand the cause. And of course talk to your local pet store owner (I know they don't always listen, but sometimes they do, you have to at least try), email friends, and of course check and add your experience to forums like this one.
PS: I had the same thing happen a year ago when I tried Blue Buffalo - all dogs throwing up within 1 week and forums listing the same; if you're using Hill's Science Diet and need an immediate alternative, Hundenflocken Gold has not caused us problems in the past.

RE: NEW FORMULA... Read between the lines, people: MY FAVORITE QUOTE FROM THEIR OWN BAG: "High quality ingredients make litter box cleanup easy!" (Yeah... Translation #1: When your cat(s) are dead, you can throw the whole litter box thing away. Translation #2: Their food is designed for your convenience - tiny little turds for you to clean up; BUT, it's NOT designed for your cat's health or convenience.)
My two cats finished less than ~1/2 of their very first "new formula" bag in ~two weeks. Within ~2 1/2 weeks after starting our first "new improved formula," my healthy 17 yo SOUL MATE that I'd had since a kitten was dead. The other 4 year old feline was puking, too. I think I know why, too. (Having been around animals - farm and domestic - for a few decades I know where to look.) IMHO, GET AWAY FROM SCIENCE DIET! DON'T WALK... RUN!
RESULT: ACUTE RENAL FAILURE. It's a side effect of my little discovery. 5 days fighting to keep my suffering pussy cat alive - sleeping with him and giving him his own little ICU 24/7 - wouldn't save him. I had to put him down at ~5PM this afternoon because... on top of everything else... he had traces of bleeding out both ends by yesterday afternoon. Traces of blood out of his mouth (from gastro juices)... and a lesser amount from his behind (what do you call gastro/mucus fluid that comes out of your butt?). I got him to the vet last week... before he actually "went down" on Saturday (try finding an "internal medicine" vet on a Saturday or Sunday ain't easy!).
"Cumulative symptoms..." Non-specific regurgitation and other gastro disturbances... followed by strange stools, followed by 1-2 days of lethargy, followed by my "suspicion," followed by a strange gait, followed by my "definite suspicion," followed by staggering and loss of balance, followed by scheduling an appt for the next day, followed by my pussycat shaking (UNUSUAL) each of his back legs 5 times in a 10-15 second period (he hadn't been in his litter box), followed by rescheduling the appt to a same day emergency appt (that afternoon), followed by lab work, followed by the next morning he was "down" and couldn't walk, followed by "There's nothing I can do. Need internal medicine specialist," followed by 5 days of living hell, followed by involuntary euthanasia (I loved this cat so much that I almost couldn't do it).
I think trial by combat is appropriate under the circumstances... don't you? Science Diet Execs (Topeka KS "Redlegs") vs The Outlaw Josey Wales (Old Clint Eastwood flick). Why waste your time arguing with an army of corporate lawyers? These people just killed my best friend and 'child.' "Seems like we can't trust the white man." Get away from SD... NOW!

When we adopted our little 4.5 kg 4 year old Schipperke 3 weeks ago, we were told that Hills Science Diet Small Bites was what he had been fed so we bought a bag and at $35 for a 4 kg bag it is expensive. We got him home & he wouldn't touch it, so we just left it & he did eat some when he got really hungry then he vomited it all up. We put it down to excitement at his new home but decided to feed him other food.
2 weeks later we tried him on Hills again, he still wouldn't touch it so we added some gravy thinking that may entice him to eat it it did but he vomited & was very lethargic for the next 24 hours. The sad thing about this is that professionals are recommending this food with no idea it is making our pets ill. IF he had been fed Hills Science Diet he would be dead by now. We live in Australia so it is affecting pets worldwide. Please do not feed this to your pet!!

My 4 year old rescue dog, Pretzel, has done fairly well on Science Diet Sensitive Stomach. There have been times when his stool was just right and others when it was very soft & runny, and he has always had very stinky gas. Starting in early January 2014 he started having bad diarrhea, scratching constantly and loosing hair. He has also been very angry and quick to react with other dogs which is the polar opposite of his true personality. After going to the vet, he was put on a steroid & probiotics. The steroids made him drink water like crazy! Which made him pee all the time, sadly in the house as well as outside. The probiotics that were supposed to harden his stool were not working at all which is highly unusual.
After a week of explosive diarrhea and continued peeing all over the house, I took him off everything - all meds from the vet & his Science Diet kibble. All he was fed was ground beef & rice. His stool was harder almost instantly. He stopped scratching. I started adding in a wee bit of kibble to start getting him back to normal and within hours he had diarrhea again and more scratching and hair loss. I have since learned that he might have an allergy to the grains in the kibble. Funny how this reaction was so quick after they changed the formula to more natural. If he is allergic then why has he not shown any symptoms until now? I am very sure the two are correlated! I can tell you I will not be feeding my dog any more Science Diet products ever again!

I have fed my cat this for several years. He has always had stomach issues, loose stool and occasional vomiting. Very thin. Even with this food. I bought and opened a new bag on Jan. 18th. Everyday he would eat and immediately throw up. Finally I thought there has to be something wrong with this food. I started researching other foods to see what I could find that would be comparable. I was looking and comparing ingredients. Imagine my surprise when I looked at the one I had been feeding thinking I was helping my poor cat, to discover the main ingredient was Brewers Rice and no meat at all. It does list Liver Flavoring however.
Needless to say, the bag went back to the Pet Store that night and I switched foods. I had to just switch all at once as I was not going to keep feeding my cat that food. It has been 2 days now and he is slowly learning to like the new food. His stool is perfect and no vomiting. I am just warning everyone out there check the ingredients in your pet food. Most animals who have Food sensitivities. Grain products are at the top of the list. I for one will never buy another Hills product.

I am having the same Science Diet issues as many others. Both my cats had eaten the hairball light formula for years and loved it. Recently noticed them acting funny, crying, vomiting, and then finally refusing to eat. I switched the food out with a can we had and they gobbled it up! Upon investigation, discovered ALL of these same cases, some leading to death. I have emailed Science Diet and warned my family & friends. Just unbelievable. There can be this many of the same stories. Hoping there is no serious damage, and will be switching brands immediately.

After feeding my cats Science Diet for many years, I bought a bag of the New & Improved formula of Active Longevity cat food in early January. It made them extremely ill: they vomited several times, acted lethargic and aloof for several days after. After this they would not touch the food anymore. I finally had to get a completely different brand of cat food, and they ate this and started acting like themselves again. I ended up throwing away the entire bag of Science Diet because I am convinced something in the New Formula made them sick. I would advise pet owners to stay away from Science Diet food!

We have searched our house completely and were stumped on how she could have been poisoned. My husband remarked this morning about her cat food. I decided to research and found this site. Each time we took them off their kibble and put them on a mild soft food. Each time they got better then they got sick again as soon as we started to reintroduce their Science Diet kibble. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, bloody stool. Vet gave them meds to sooth the stomach but it did not work. What did work was to take them off the Science Diet kibble. We are finished with Science Diet forever. There is something wrong with this food.

We adopted Omalley when he was 3 and half years old. He was a beautiful cat and all his own animal. The vet we go to said he needed special food because he was a stray and we agreed to Hills cd cat food. He did not like it and would scratch the floor around his dish. Sooner but probably later, he would eat it. After awhile he started throwing up. We thought maybe he was getting into something down in our basement. The throwing up got worse and when he was 8 years old, he passed away. How sad we were. I believe the Hills cd cat food was the underlying reason from what we observed and have been hearing about cat food. Our first cat Chiquita never had any problems until she was 22 years old and she ate Fancy Feast, canned. I tried Omalley on Iams for older cats and he liked it, but it was too late.

I wish that I had knew about this information before I opened the new bag of Hills Science Diet dog food. I thought that it was the Hills Science Diet Fruity Snacks because that was the only thing new in his diet. But I had also purchased a new bag of Hills Science Diet dog food and he wouldn't eat it so I hand fed it to him. Only if I had known I was killing my Buddy Ray. He finally stopped eating and drinking water, became lethargic, throwing up, drooling, diarrhea and then had clear blood from his rectum. He couldn't even stand up or walk. I started giving him water by syringe and pureed food in blender and put into syringe. I couldn't figure out why he got so sickly so fast because the only thing that I changed in his diet was HSD Fruity Snacks. I never dreamed that the new bag of dog food did it because he had been eating that brand for about 9 months and gobbled it up. I am so sadden with grief and despair at myself for hand feeding Buddy Ray this food that was killing him and finally did. I hope that no one else lose their beloved companion and best friend. I was going to wait until I had more information but it seems like the word needs to get out! We recently lost our 4 year old cat due to what we strongly believe was the new formula of the Science Diet Adult Light cat food. He had always eaten this food with no problem. The last bag we purchased was the "new and improved formula". About two weeks after he started it he became very sick. Lethargic, diarrhea, stopped eating, in pain and hanging out in his cat litter box. We took him to the vet who ran many tests and they could not find anything. They sent us home and told us to feed him anything just to get him eating again. Went and bought a variety of foods that he immediately started eating and within a week he was completely better and back to normal.
Without knowing we put him back on the Science Diet and within days he was sick again. Again to the vet... more tests and nothing conclusive. Not knowing why this was happening I started researching the internet and found this site with all the reviews! I immediately started him on the other food again which he gobbled down. Unfortunately this time it was too late and he could not rally back. We are sickened and saddened by this. Fortunately our vet was concerned enough because she could not find a probable cause and contacted Hills (Science Diet). Even though they had only had a few complaints they have offered and are paying for our cat to have a necropsy to determine the cause of death. While it will not be 100% conclusive because of the time lapse in his death I feel like it is a start.
Honestly I hope it was not the cat food. However... even if the food was not the cause of death in our cat I feel there are WAY TOO many stories regarding this food. I am in the process of trying to get the company to come get the remainder food and test it. And in our case I believe it is way too coincidental that he got completely better and then immediately got sick again on the food. I only want to spread the word so that others can be spared. Unfortunately only people who come across this website will read these stories. And for us it was too late. Please inform everyone you know...

We have two five-year old cats that have been fed Hill's Science Diet almost exclusively since they were adopted as kittens. About two weeks ago, we bought a new large bag of the Adult Light variety they have been eating for four years. We noticed it looked a little darker and greasier - the "new and improved" formula -- but didn't think much of it. Within a few days, both cats were "off" their usual eating routines, not coming to eat immediately and not cleaning out the bowl. One of my furry girls has a susceptibility to kidney problems already, but had been active with a good appetite and otherwise healthy. Within a week on the new food, she was lethargic and dehydrated. I took her to the vet and her kidneys are suddenly failing rapidly. While I know there was previous damage to her kidneys, the rapid onset of symptoms seems odd, and corresponds with the change in food. And the second cat, who has always been completely healthy, seems lethargic, isn't eating much and has been throwing up more than usual (vet visit by the end of the week if she doesn't seem better). I strongly suspect something is wrong with the food, as that is the only variable in their diet, exposures and routines over the past few weeks (they are 100% indoor cats).

I raised my 7 year old tabby on Science Diet. He loved it and from what I was told it was one of the best foods for him. WAS being the key word. I bought a bag of the new formula because that's all the stores had. Figuring SD knows how picky cats are I trusted their experience. I didn't think anything of it until my cat won't eat any of it. I noticed that the food looked different. I went back to 2 pet stores asking if they had any other complaints or recalls. Of course that was like talking to the wall.
I reached out to the people of SD and they instructed me on how I need to mix the old food with the new food. NO KIDDING. However there's no more old food. So I went to 10 different pet store in my area looking for an old bag. I was able to find a store that had 2 bags of the old stuff left. Just opened my 2nd bag and started to mix the old with the new only using a 95 to 5 ratio. My cats isn't having any of it. So now what? Clearly SD doesn't want to help and from reading all these reviews it looks like I'm not alone. Any suggestions on what to switch him to????

I was going to change my dog food for my Great Dane and introduced a small amount of Science Diet to his regular food in the evening. The next morning, he was bloated and dry heaving. I took him to the vet where it was verified that it was bloat and emergency surgery was done. Afterwards, dr told me surgery went well but his heart was having troubles from the stress and he later died. He hadn't run around or done any of the typical things that can cause bloat before or after eating the night before. Only had some of that food.
Two months later, I have a new puppy and am feeding him the same brand of regular food that had been fed to my Dane and scooped some out of the outside tote that I didn't realize until later that there was still some of that nasty Science Diet kibbles in that tote and he was sick within a few hours of eating a very small amount. If I had the money, I would've had a necropsy performed on my beloved Dane but I didn't and I incurred a very large vet bill for trying to save his life. If it hadn't have been for his heart having arrhythmia, the surgery would've solved his dilemma. I still mourn his death and feel responsible because I believe it was the Science Diet food that caused him to bloat and caused my pup abdominal distress as well.

I really thought she was going to die. She had eaten Science Diet all her life, but it was when I bought a new bag in Nov 2013 that said "new improved formula" that she quickly became very sick. Then I found this site and other sites where so many dog & cat owners are linking their pet's illnesses to the new formula of Science Diet. I immediately took her food away and went out to buy another brand. She was better right away, no vomiting or seizures since and it's been a few weeks now. I really believe if I hadn't found this information and changed her food when I did my cat would have died. Please pass this on to every pet owner you know, Tweet or Facebook it to get the word out about this. Science Diet should recall this product but they won't do it until there is an uprising.
If you google "Science Diet patent" you will find that they received a patent in late 2012 to use polyethylene (a toxic plastic) as a coating on the food to extend shelf life. Is this the culprit or is there something else in there? On the Consumer Affairs web site there are 186 complaints (as of Dec 2013) under Science Diet and 56 complaints (as of Dec 2013) under Hills (the parent co).

They gave him IV fluids and kept him over night. Tests showed he was blocking up with urine and his kidneys were failing. They unblocked him and he stayed that way overnight. We were going to bring him home the next day but sadly got a call he was reblocking. The Dr said there was surgery but more than likely this would keep happening. We made the very painful decision to have him put down - he was suffering so much. Now reading all these comments I have no doubt SD killed our cat!! Our 7yo girl cat gags a lot. I have had my tux. cat since he was 2 1/2 mos. old. Always gave him Science Diet. August 13, 2013, I went to work and when I came home, my tux. was lethargic, drooling and foaming. Took him to the vet and they gave him a shot of vitamins. That was at 4pm. By 5:00am, he was dead. Really didn't think nothing of it. Oct 11, 2013, we adopted 2 kittens, litter mates. They were on a Purina kitten food and Science Diet kitten mix to switch them to Science Diet. On November 5, I started a Science Diet kitten and Science Diet adult (same bag as the tux had) mix. Getting ready for work on the morning of the 6th, Joker (6 mos old) started vomiting and howling in pain. From 5:30 am until 8am, he vomited 5 times.
I took him to the vet and they kept him for tests among other things. After we got home and his brother was eating the food, I took away thinking about the coincidence. Joker stayed downstairs and ate during the night while his brother slept in bed with me all night. The vet said on the 7, after surgery, it was best to put him down. It was Fip. When I looked at the bag of food, it said "New look! Improved formula!" Whenever I seen that in the store, I always stuck to the old formula until I didn't have a choice. Personally, I think it was the food. Losing 2 cats in 2 months is just too much. I have filed a complaint with Science Diet (I was told to destroy all food and they never had any problems/complaints) and also filed a complaint with the FDA.
It has been almost a month and have yet to hear anything from Science Diet. All I want is the food to be tested. After I started making the complaints, I thought this is not going to bring them back. Hopefully, this will help save some babies lives. It is worth it and my next step is to contact a lawyer...... and no, I did not destroy any of the food. I still have it all.

When the ingredients say chicken meal that is NOT beaks, feathers etc. Regulations state that Meat meal is "exclusive of feathers, heads, feet and entrails." It's boiled and then died and ground. It's similar to the meat left over when soup stock is made. When your food says chicken BY-PRODUCT then you are then getting all of the hot dog parts PLUS heads, feet, beaks and FEATHERS. Also, since ingredients are listed in order of weight having a "dry meat" listed early means that a larger portion of the final product is/was meat and not fillers.
We also were had the "Science Diet s/d" forced on use by the vet. It worked well. But to call it dog food is being generous. It's closer to chicken fat flavored flan. (Water, Corn Starch, Egg Product and Chicken Fat). The first "meat" is pork liver the 5th ingredient well into the second line. Likely added for IRON not for PROTEIN. Followed by SUGAR, Sawdust, & miscellaneous vitamins. I do not mean to be argumentative, I just don't want people to avoid Good Food Brands that have "MEAL" thinking that means "GROSS BITS".

The vet said she had a temp of 105 degrees and a bacterial infection. She is strictly an indoor cat. Never goes outside and never associates with other animals. She is now on intravenous, in severe pain, and the bill is at $2,000. But it is the heartache of knowing I fed her this stuff. I insisted she eat it because the vet said it was the right thing to do. It is a shame that they changed the formula so drastically that the many animals are in distress. My 12 year old white cat almost stopped eating completely. My miniature schnauzer just turned 8 years old. Due to the advice of our vet, she has been eating Hills Science Diet, w/d food for a couple of years now. Within the past two years she has had several health issues. First she became lethargic, started vomiting, (couldn't even keep down water) and had bloody diarrhea. We had to take her to the vet. At that time, he insisted we change the food she was on then, to the d/d because he thought it would do her the most good as he thought she had food allergies. He also diagnosed her with pancreatitis. She stayed with the vet for a few days getting some IV fluids. We picked her up and took her back home and fed her the d/d. She never really returned to her old self. Then one day I noticed that she couldn't see her toy when I threw it. I took her back to the vet and she was diagnosed as blind. I mean it was basically overnight! She was only 7 years old then. He told us there was no cure.
Then, this past May 30th, we had to take her back to the vet because she had several bumps (on her face, muzzle, neck and belly) that looked like some kind of rash or something, but had pus in them. He did some tests and said she was suffering from a severe food allergy. I asked how that could be since she was only eating the d/d food that was supposed to be for dogs with food sensitivities. He basically told me to my face that he didn't believe that all she'd eaten was the d/d. He insisted we must have been feeding her something else. He insisted we keep feeding her the d/d but I told him, there was no way I would feed her anymore of it because I knew it was all she'd eaten. Her stomach has been so sensitive that we don't even buy dog treats for her.
So, we left there and my husband said we were done with that vet. About a week after that, our dog began to vomit again, every time she ate, I found another vet in our area and took her there and was told that she had pancreatitis yet again. Now after several tests, we have been told that most likely she now has pancreatic cancer. Now we are probably going to lose her soon. We have spent over two thousand dollars on this little dog just since May 30th, 2013. I can't help but worry that some, if not most of her health issues are because of these Hills Science Diet foods. Especially now that I have read more stories and heard other peoples' Science Diet woes.

I am wondering what dog and cat food to feed to my animals. I have fed SD for over 30years. My neighbor has lots of dogs and twice she's tried to feed SD and her dogs have bloody diarrhea and are throwing up. Then another friend of hers lost two very healthy puppies after within 2 weeks feeding SD. The vet checked and they had intestinal stress. I love my dogs (all around age 10) and my cats (both about 3) and I don't want to lose them. Anyone have any suggestions? I think I have been blessed so far and haven't gotten any of the new formula. My neighbor and I compared food and they are different shades. She must have the new formula. I feel like I'm playing Russian roulette with SD. Help!!

Our seven-year-old dog was having problems urinating so we ran some blood work and did a urinalysis. In our otherwise healthy male dog bladder crystals had formed. The veterinarian prescribed him Science Diet U/d to help with the formation of the crystals. About two weeks later, he was vomiting blood and had bloody stool and was lethargic. Took him to vet and after all kinds of tests it came back; his liver count was in the two thousands!! It's supposed to be in the two hundreds! Also the bladder crystals and vomiting blood had no relation. The vet's office seemed to think my dog had eaten something he shouldn't have. Which this is possible but really impossible for we are very aware of what's around. Our pets only eat pet food.
Our dog was then put on Science Diet K/d which is for renal health and also prescribed Denamarin to hopefully bring down his liver enzymes. Once his liver enzymes started dropping the vet wanted us to put him back on the Science Diet U/d. I was very skeptical since it was too much of a coincidence that he ended up ill after eating the Science Diet for a couple of weeks. My vet talked to Hills Science Diet and they said they don't think it was from the food, that they have not heard of other incidences.
After reading some reviews about the Science Diet brand and others' experience of the same, I am convinced it was the food! He now eats Royal Canin. So almost $700 later for a weekend of treatments to keep our dog alive, and $50 a month (for the last 3 months) on prescribed Denamarin, a big THANK YOU goes out to Science Diet!! Who would have ever thought a $30 bag of dog food would bring your pet so close to death's door!

My Lab Tess was only 5 years old when we lost her. A year before that I put her on the Science Diet Diet plan that for some reason was only out for less than a year. It came with the bone snacks as fillers. She lost 21 pounds in a year. My vet was very happy with her weight. Shortly after she started this diet she started vomiting uncontrollably to the point it would take an hour or more comforting her to get it to stop. We were taking her to the vet and they were treating her for reverse sneezing and later, a gastric infection.
After waking up one morning to find her almost in shock, we took her back to the vet and decided to take her to a specialist who did an ultrasound to find "what they think" is gastric cancer. I did my homework on this condition and it normally only happens to MALE labs 8 to 10 years old. Very rare for my then, 4 year old lab. She was a house dog who went to work with me everyday in my law office, traveled to Utah and WY several times a year and was constantly watched. She was trained not to get in the garbage and she never chewed up anything. SO -- Why would this happen?
I worked really hard with exercise and the diet plan to get her 20 pounds off. I did, then she was diagnosed with gastric cancer. Why was the Science Diet - Diet plan so popular and then all of a sudden I go to get more and it's off the shelf with no warning and no explanation.
$5,700 later, just to try to save our girl and no real answers because it was so rare for her, I need to know why Science Diet took their Science Diet plan off the market so suddenly. Tess came from a very good breeder with no other puppies having this problem. I think we all need to get more answers from Science Diet, who never responds to my product questions.

I have three cats who have been eating Science Diet since I adopted/rescued them (the one I've had the longest has been eating it for 8 years). I've always felt very proud that I am able to provide my cats with a top-notch food purchased directly from the vet. But I recently brought home a bag of C/D formula and they absolutely refuse to eat it. They hover their bowls and sniff as if there's something foul-smelling in them - then they back away from the bowls. I've tried the "They'll-eat-when-they're-hungry" tactic but it's been over a day and they're still not eating, so I have to go find a suitable replacement food today.
I'm very concerned by all of the recent complaints about Science Diet listed on this website; clearly something in the food has changed in recent months. My bag does not say "New Formula", like some of the other complainants have noticed (perhaps the Canadian packaging is different?), but I trust my cats' behavior: they are not overly finicky and they are clearly telling me that something is wrong. Given all the health complications that seem to be arising, I'm relieved that my cats have just decided to refuse the food. Still, at $23 for a small bag, I'm cheesed off. Good cat food is a luxury that I permit in my budget, but my pay check doesn't allow for this kind of waste.

He then stopped eating all together and began vomiting liquid. We took him to the vet this morning and they couldn't find anything wrong with him. I took him off the SD and switched back to Royal Canine. This evening my little one started vomiting the SD. I will never buy SD again. :(

I have fostered for a rescue for 4 years now and they always use SD. I am an office manager for a local vet and we have recommended SD for the last 15 years. I have been employed at the clinic, without issue. Earlier today, I was very upset. I have 4 cages with kittens I am fostering totaling 17 kittens. ALL are on SD. I opened a new bag the beginning of the week and noticed instead of the kittens eating it, they were spilling it on the bottom of the cages and crying at me. It has been 5 days and I thought something was seriously wrong with the kittens. They were ALL losing weight, had loose stool, some were vomiting and they were very thirsty. I was/am very concerned about them and decided to try a different food. Purina Kitten was what I brought home. I was shocked when I tried to put it in the first cage. The kittens rushed to the bowl and one bit down on my pinkie; he wanted the food so bad. I am pissed. It was the same result with ALL the kittens.
The sad part AND red flag was they acted like this when there was a full bowl of SD kitten in each cage. 1 bottle baby that is now 7 weeks had refused to eat the dry food. I put the Purina in and guess what, he ate it. These babies starved themselves because it was making them sick! I am asking the rescue to do CBC SMACK and DIFF panels on two of them to see where they stand. I AM informing my boss of what is going on AND asking him to switch companies for our RX food. The sad part is I have 4 more bags of SD and I don't know what to do with. FYI, my feral cats wouldn't touch it either. I just found out today about all these complaints and you need to do something. There is a big issue here. I feel so bad for those whose pets have gotten ill. I and others trusted your company to provide quality food for our pets/rescues. If you want to keep that trust, do something; at least tell us you’re looking into it!

I have already posted on this site a couple of times about my similar story that many of you are now facing - cat healthy and only eating original SD for years, eats new formula, starts vomiting, stops eating altogether. Sadly after trying everything to heal her, including a surgical feeding tube and $2,700 in pet bills, I lost my battle to save her this weekend. Whether it's this food, or any other, please don't let your pets vomit more than a couple of times before seeking treatment. Even vomiting/stopping eating for as little as three days can lead to a downward spiral towards "fatty liver disease" that's hard to reverse. It's heartbreaking. Thank you for the link to the FDA. I filed my report today.

(I had originally tried to include the link that would take you directly to that part of the site, but if you can at least get to the FDA site, you should be able to find it.) As I meant to say, my heart goes out (not my hearts go out...I only have one!) to all of you and your pets. I am so saddened to read all of these complaints. My two cats have been eating the Science Diet Adult Indoor Cat dry food formula for over 4 years (and ate the kitten formula before that). Both started throwing up from the "new and improved formula", one right away and one a few weeks later. The one who threw up right away almost never throws up. They're both almost 5 and I can count on one hand the number of times she has ever been sick. The other one throws up some monster hairballs, but usually every few months at the most. Now, he has been throwing up for a week. On Sunday, he threw up five times, twice with food in it and three times just liquid. After a few good days, I came home tonight, fed them their dinner and within 20 minutes, he threw it all up.
That's been the pattern: Within 30 minutes of eating this stuff, he throws it up. I have an appointment with the vet tomorrow. After scheduling that, I went online and found all of you. My hearts go out to you. I know that my kitties are my babies. And I am furious that a trusted pet food maker would endanger all of our beloved pets. I found this website and I plan to file a complaint. You can file online or you can call a phone number for your state. Maybe if all of us do so, something will be done about this horrible new food. She was bleeding profusely from her behind. After all the testing and four day stay at the vets, the conclusion was that she ate something. The only thing that she ate was her dog food. I contacted Hill's, and they responded very quickly with a 2-page questionnaire that they wanted me to fill out along with a "Here’s a coupon for your trouble”. I filled out all the information they asked for about both dogs that were sick and emailed it back. This was over a month ago. I have yet to hear anything back from them. I’ve emailed them twice. With that coupon, I bought their cat food; which my cats have also eaten before without any issues. Within hours of them eating the food, all four cats puked. That bag went in the trash. I wouldn’t even feed it to our local wildlife. I’m still holding on to the dog food, just in case they want it for testing; but as a once firm believer in SD products, I will never ever feed their products again.

On 5/15/13, I had 3 Pomeranians, 9 yrs (5 lbs), 11 yrs (5 lbs) and 13 yrs (10 lbs). Sadly, having no choice but to have a house call vet take him to his resting place, I had to say good-bye to my 11-yr-old baby yesterday. I'm just going to state the facts we have right now as the situation at hand is evolving into a nightmare, one I hope others may be able to avoid.
All 3 of my dogs have been on SD since birth and I, too, noticed the difference in color and smell of this new/improved formulation. Our dogs seemed to be fine with it so we thought nothing more of it until our 9-yr-old became ill around Feb 2013, vomiting, lethargic, painful bones among several other things. On taking her to the vet, it was discovered with an MRI that she had kidney stones so bad that one kidney was already in failure, the other working at 50%. As I've also been dx'd with cancer; we couldn't afford the $10,000 in bills it would take to remove her kidney, not to mention there was no guarantee the remaining one wouldn't also go into failure, etc.
So the vet got her out of pain, put her on meds to clear some infection and now it is in God's hands. She's not suffering and is even doing better although we have some accidents here and there, but that's nothing if we get to keep her with us a little longer. As long as she's fighting, so will we. We only hope we'll have her for another 6 mos. Then our vet explained to us that her condition was so rare he'd wondered if she'd been poisoned because he said it had to have come from something she'd eaten. Not a chance, everyone loved my dogs plus I fed them what I thought was the best out there and always had, and being home bound, they're always with me so we thought this had to be some horrible fluke.
Within weeks, our 13-yr-old became sick. Off to the vet again and we get a repeat diagnosis but he's even worse; he's in full kidney and renal failure and they want to start immediate dialysis. Sadly, at $15,000 a pop, we couldn't do that either so we brought him home and I made arrangements for an independent vet to come to our home when it is his time. We were very happy when he suddenly did a bit of a turnaround and he's still fighting now. As long as our babies are still living with some quality in their lives, we can clean the few accidents we need to but we'll be lucky to have him for another month. We then took our dogs off all manufactured food at that time as we no longer knew what to trust and only hoped our 11-yr-old wouldn't begin to show symptoms.
At this point, I called SD with my info and found out through them they did use some ingredients out of China. I was told they only have to reformulate with 2 things and can legally claim made in the U.S. I was then promised a call from someone higher up the food chain the following day, a promise they never kept. They also requested the food I had left as I told them I was going to find a lab to test it, telling me they would do it for me so I could save some money which I politely declined.
We now come to May 12 when my last dog developed a lump that seemed to be growing very quickly so we got him to the vet on the 14th. The vet mis-dx'd it as a swollen anal gland and told us it needed to be lanced. When they lanced it, urine began to pour out and it turned out it was his bladder they'd cut into causing critical, irreparable damage, at which point they then X-rayed him to confirm. It was then they found the kidney stones inside of him. They were so large they'd put pressure on his other organs and his bladder had broken through, protruding through his little bum. This too, he told us was a one in a million. He'd never even seen it happen before but a little 5-lb dog just doesn't have much room inside to play with. We brought our little boy home. I called our other vet and yesterday, in less than 24 hrs, I had to say good-bye to my precious baby boy.
So the facts as they sit now are: 1) I will now lose all 3 out of 3 of my babies in less than 6 mo.; 2) their deaths will be due to something extremely rare for dogs to ever get; 3) the cause of kidneys stones in dogs are from 1 of 2 things only (I cannot disclose at this time) which must be ingested and shows up within 3 to 4 months after ingesting; 4) my dogs have been on the same diet since the very first day I brought them home.
We've spent thousands of dollars over the last several months and it has only just begun. Our independent vet left yesterday with my baby, all arrangements already in place to have all his organs and tissue sent out to find the culprit which will show in his body and all foods/treats are being tested elsewhere. I pray no one else will ever have to go through this. Bless you all.

Probably making my baby sick, stressing her out at the vet and causing me a lot of worry. Not to mention the hefty bill.

Seeing all these people's complaints makes me wonder if Science Diet plans on going back to old formula. I won't be buying the new formula food anymore. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what kind of food they switched to?

We bought the new Adult Indoor formula and it made our cats sick. They've been on SD for years without problems but the sudden switch has really messed them up. It's common knowledge that cats can't switch foods abruptly, but SD changed their formula without warning. Now, our cats vomit every day and one has stopped eating all together. We're very upset!

I have three cats that have used the Mature Cat Hairball formula for years and it had greatly reduced the amount of hairballs, as one might expect. A few weeks ago, we purchased a bag of the new formula and I have had cats puking every day since then - not hairballs, just large amounts of puke. My cats are obviously losing weight and I will have to find an alternative to this once good product. I would have rated the previous formulation with four stars, but now I give it a one.

We have a busy house with three kids, 2 dogs and 2 cats. We just had to put our beloved 12 year old cat down. He stopped eating about 2 weeks ago. He's always been overweight and consumed everything he could get his paws on, therefore always on a diet. He was fed different Science Diets over the years. We thought the eating issue was just him slowing down due to age. And our two dogs sometimes would eat any cat food that wasn't consumed so I don't think I realized how much he wasn't eating.
We have another cat who has always been thin and a picky eater and rarely finished a meal, but now I'm realizing that he's hardly been eating either. I had gotten some soft food for our cat but he wasn't really interested in that either. He got so weak that I took him in for blood work, and he was in renal failure too far along to help him. The vet said it was probably genetic because 12 is not that old for a cat (and he wasn't diabetic); but afterwards I'd read that toxins can build up in a cat's body if it doesn't eat. Now I'm noticing that the dogs will not touch the cat food either. And I'm feeling guilty that I could have prevented this if I'd paid more attention.

Our Corgi has been on Science Diet Light for three years without a single problem. When her dog food ran out, I purchased another bag as I always do. I noticed that the new bag of food pellets were lighter in color than her previous bag but thought nothing of it since I had been giving her this same food for over three years. Well, within 24 hours, she began to vomit and have uncontrolled diarrhea. She was lethargic and would not eat. I thought maybe she had picked something up on one of our walks, ate it and it made her sick. I took her off the Science Diet and gave her boiled chicken breast and rice to get her digestive system back on track. It took over a week before she began to feel a little better.
When I felt that I could introduce her dog food back into her diet, I did. That was a big mistake! Within an hour of eating Science Diet Light, she began vomiting and experiencing diarrhea all over again. I then checked the bag and saw that it said, "New and Improved Formula." I took her food container and emptied the contents back into the Science Diet bag and took it back to Petco along with a sample of her old dog food to show them the difference. I asked the clerk if she had any of the old formula left; she had one bag. I exchanged the product took it home and fed our Corgi the old formula. Within a day her vomiting stopped and her bowel movements are almost back to normal. Best of all, she has her energy and her smile back.
Message to Science Diet: "If it's not broke, don't fix it.” I will now have to begin the task of finding a different dog food to feed her.

Our dog would throw up immediately after eating her food. It started when we bought her a new bag of Science Diet Sensitive Skin dog food, but we never really put two and two together since we had always fed her this food. There have been times when she has gone to our in-laws and ate a different brand of food and other times, when we got free samples of other food in the mail that we have given to her with no issues. Since she has eaten all different kinds of dog foods with no issues and was never sensitive to us changing her food, we thought something was wrong with her.
We took her to the vet and spent over $500 in bloodwork, x-rays, antibiotics, probiotics, special dog food, etc. She was fine until the minute we introduced her regular food back in (Science Diet Sensitive Skin). The minute she ate the food, she would throw it up. We finally decided to google to see if there was a recall that we didn't know about and found this website. We’re so thankful we did because we went right out and bought her a different brand of food. And she has eaten 3 cups with no vomiting at all. She is wagging her tail, playing again, etc.
The vet wanted to do an ultrasound and more x-rays, but I wanted to do some research on my own and am so glad that I did or else I would have spent even more money to find out that the new formula of Science Diet is making her violently ill. I don't know what is in this new formula, but it doesn't seem right that all of these animals would be having this many issues. We're keeping our vet receipts and the bag of dog food in case this ever gets taken to court. We could really use that $500 back!

I am appalled at what I have found on your site about Science Diet pet food. We rescued a 4-month old puppy from the local APL two and a half months ago. He is 6.5 months now and has proven to be an excellent companion for all of us in the home. The APL and the caring vet recommended Science Diet food for the little guy which we continued to buy for him. However, like the reviews I found here, he started to experience severe diarrhea three days ago. Just by chance, we had just bought a new bag of Science Diet the day before that, and I have since connected the dots.
After doing some research on the internet, he will no longer be eating this Science Diet product or any other product made by these people. We gave him rice and beef this morning for breakfast while we picked up some other food from the feed mill. The people at the local feed mill also commented on the large amount of customers that have had this same problem with Science Diet. This little Shepherd mix dog looked to us to give him a great life from where he once came and by God, we intend to do just that. Science Diet will not be a part of his life from here on out.
With proper nutrition, we hope he comes back to health 100%. I can only hope this food did not cause any irreversible damage to his gentle little body. My heart goes out to all those affected by this food and their caring owners. Science Diet should be pulled out from the market and made to pay all of these people’s vet bills. If there is an attorney willing to work on this or already is, I would love to be a part of shutting this tragedy down.

My dog is an Australian Shepherd and we have fed her Science Diet her whole life - she is six years old. Over the last six days, she has started vomiting every time she eats it. Last Thursday evening (December 27), she threw up her food immediately after eating most of it, but I chalked it up to a nervous tummy from spending the day at the groomer's. On Friday she did not touch her food, and on Saturday evening when she decided to eat the Science Diet, she threw it up immediately. Since it was after hours for her veterinarian clinic, I decided to cut off her Science Diet food for 24 hours and give her a couple of cups of cooked chicken and rice to see if her tummy had settled. She successfully ate my homemade chicken and rice dish for lunch and dinner on Sunday - no sickness, no issues.
I thought we were on the mend so I did not contact my vet the next day (Monday). I decided to give her one last round of chicken/rice at lunch (December 31). She loved it and devoured it, with no issues again. I was elated, thinking the sickness was over. Last night, I gave her more Science Diet and immediately she was throwing up everywhere. I gave her more again tonight because she was acting hungry and it came up immediately. As of her throwing up today, I am growing concerned that it has to be her food. I'm going to call my vet in the morning to see what she has heard about Science Diet and what her thoughts are. At first, our dog gobbled up the dog food but then started skipping feedings or sniffing the food and walking away in disgust. Not typical of a lab. She started eating less and less of the dog food. She was also getting progressively lethargic, sad and despondent. She lost weight and was looking small and week. I thought she was depressed or not getting out enough. Her energy level decreased significantly and she was acting like a 15-year-old dog. She refused to eat the Science Diet, but was clearly hungry, eating treats and people food.
One night she refused to come in the kitchen while I was cooking and wouldn't greet our neighbor, who is one of her favorite people. That night she would not respond to our calling her or petting her. She just curled up and slept in a corner. She had not eaten any dog food for a couple of days, but was clearly hungry as she was taking treats and people food. I had some leftover Blue Buffalo puppy food and I decided to try it. She gobbled up the Blue Buffalo, but was still despondent and limp. My husband had to carry her upstairs to bed that night. Three to four weeks ago, one of my boxers became sick, vomiting, not taking water and declined quickly. I started her on chicken and rice but still no luck. So, I took her to the emergency vet. Her pancreatic enzymes were off the chart, over 6,000. They kept her no further vomiting and fluids. I brought her home. She did okay for 1-2 days (I think to please me) and then she declined so much she would not take anything so we had to put her down. When her brother (from same litter) started not eating, I thought he was slightly depressed so I did not think anything of it.
It was time for his check up and his enzymes were elevated to 3,000. I fed him the light food of the other dogs to get rid of it. The day the enzymes came back, this was the common denominator. I called Hills and was told there was no recall and they would look into it. I offered to send in the leftover food and they said that would not be necessary as they keep a bag and they would check on this. My canine daughter, who had been on the same diet of Science Diet canned for mature dogs 7 and older, had always been on nothing but this food and never ate anything else. When she started not eating, we knew something was wrong. Then in the middle of the night, she had wanted down and off the bed. She had poop with blood! She was very ill. By morning, we realized she was getting worse by the hour so early in morning, after she also had more poop with blood and then vomited with blood, we immediately got her to her vet's office. She had, as far as we could tell, only been sick a day. Maybe less? At the vets, she had to be given IV shots for poop and pain, also blood work and antibiotics. The shot for the pain, poop and nausea allowed her to get some rest.
That night, when she awoke, it was 11PM! She felt better but when we tried to give her a little food so we could then give her antibiotics by mouth, liquid, she refused the canned food. Then we continued to try and get her to eat! They know. Listen to them! She would get it in her mouth and drop it out of her mouth, over and over again! So I asked my husband to open another can. She did the same thing. Then I said, "did you use the ones we just got from the vet's office?". He said, "no! I have been trying to get her to eat from the ones we bought at the Patrick AFB Commissary, Science Diet mature adults can. Again I said, "Okay, open the can we just got from vet's office." She gobbled that up like she hadn't eaten in years! She was empty and starved!
Now I still have some of those cans we got from the Commissary and we will be figuring out where do we send them for testing. The Hill company had asked me to call when I sent them an email, but after reading many posts about this company and their reading of a canned response, I am not going to waste any more of my time! I want people to know this! Apparently, this company has an "in" with vets and people who wrongfully trust this company! Do not make this mistake as we have for years. My dog was telling me what almost killed her. She was one of the fortunate ones. Her owners could afford to take her to the vets.
How many animals does this company professes to care about? Have they killed or made them or their owners/parents suffer? How many? I am positive it was their canned food that almost killed my dog and made her suffer! No more! Buyer beware! This company does not care about any animals unless it's to make money on them. Obviously, they changed formulas and probably buy tainted and cheaper by-products from God knows who or what country. Yes, I know what country. Do you?

I have seen with my own eyes as have others, obviously that there has been and continues to be bad Science Diet out there. All were being recommended by veterinarians no less. It is making our animals sick and some unfortunately die! Most people these days do not have the high cost of vet care. How many animals and their parents have suffered because I never see a recall?
I know this is what made our poodle sick and almost die! She still has to go to the vet and it has frightened her so bad she's afraid to drink water. Somehow they associate this with getting so severely ill, yet it was all too obvious it was her canned Science Diet purchased at an air force base commissary. For years now, only this time we know it was the food, because when she kept refusing to eat it and we had not a clue that it was her food, which was trusted by everyone! So she finally ate some after we thought she was just being picky!
She became severely ill to the point she needed immediate IV fluids, some shots, blood work and antibiotics! She lost almost a pound in a matter of days. She's only 9 lbs, or was, now 8! She is now constipated because she's afraid to drink water. She will eat the new vet recommended Science Diet canned, but I really don't think I want to continue it, because I will never trust this brand now again. Yet, you would think it would be the cheaper to have Chinese crap food, we’d have to worry about!
I have been asked to call the company, but I pretty much feel that it's a bit late for saying anything now, how many died or suffered because of this food? How many people had to forgo paying bills so they could try and save their pets? If their pets were that fortunate?! I am pissed to say the least! Where are the recalls? How do I know it was the food? The same way everyone else with a brain figures it out, listen to your pet. If they don't want the food, there is something wrong with it!
When we got her home, she refused on the food that had been in the fridge. The next can we opened, she refused, until we got it straight from the vet’s office. She wouldn't eat any of it, yet she gulped the partial can we gave her after we got that can home! S, listen to your pets! They will tell you, hopefully, before they have to suffer and die!
This was purchased in March 2012! It was the Science Diet canned for mature, beware! It caused her to have "D" with copious amounts of blood and then she also vomited once with a lot of blood and that was it. To the vets, she went in a hurry! She then received the IV fluids, antibiotics, shot for pain and for the "D", and antibiotics to go home with for 7 days. Also, she had to have blood work, and maybe even now, X-rays.
She never goes out except on a leash in our own yard. She is a pampered pooch and she is 14 years old, but before all this, she had never been sick! She is eating and drinking only if we put in a little plain broth, but she never vomited. The one time she had blood, she went straight to the vet! Most people though couldn't afford that, especially 3 more trips, medications and constant care by people who are fortunate enough to be able to be home with her. I am pissed, because I keep thinking of all the "others" and this cannot be an isolated incident! Where are the reports about this obviously poisoned food?!

I have fed this dog food to our dog for almost 6 years now. It was prescribed by her vet and the only thing she could eat with her sensitive stomach. Like I have done many times before, I went to the vet on March 31st to purchase another expensive bag of this food. I took it home and once opened, she acted funny towards it. She didn't eat it at first, then after eating it for almost a week, became lethargic, had mucus in her stools and drank more water than usual. She normally eats twice a day, but with this most recent bag of food, she would only eat once a day, usually at the end of the day. My wife began researching after her behavior became very odd today. She began trying to eat dirt as well. The only thing that has changed in her life was this new bag of dog food. There is no doubt that this is the issue. I bought another brand and type of food on my way home from work tonight and she ate it immediately. She perked up and seems to feel a little better. This food is poison at best and should be taken off of the market immediately!

I didn't think much of it because I didn’t notice any worms, but yesterday when I bought a bag, I found the webs again along with worms hanging from the webs! Gross! I brought the bag of food and the live worms to PetSmart. We opened two more bags of the same Science Diet food and they also had worms in it! The vet has recommended this food but we will never buy this food again! I am very upset!

I fed my dog Science Diet Mature Adult dry dog food. The next day, she began having diarrhea. We fed her the dog food for 1 week and her diarrhea got worse. We stopped giving her the food and switched back to her original food (Purina One) and her stools began to firm up. No more liquid feces. She has been back on Purina One for over 3 weeks now and still has very soft stools. Two very expensive visits to two different vets show her to now have elevated liver enzymes and low protein count. I truly believe that the Science Diet dog food made my pet ill. $1,500 later, she is still undergoing tests to determine what is going on and how to treat it.

Early Monday morning, I rushed my 3 indoor pets to the hospital, when they became very ill at the same time, the night before. The first immediate signs were drooling and smacking lips, and shunning food within hours of Sunday dinner. I visited them twice a day at the hospital, and watched bloody mouth and nose sores develop. They were immediately put on intravenous antibiotics, fluids, and pain medications. I was racking my brain trying to figure out what could have happened, since I use no chemicals in my house. I clean with a small wet washcloth and dry with a dry cloth, and use Ivory liquid soap or vinegar with water when needed. The only thing I feared was maybe bad food, and I had been feeding them with a doctor recommended science diet.
I immediately took to the computer, and found the following shocking 28 pages, 5 comments to a page, on the loss and sickness of pets. Why is this food still in the market? I am in the process of alerting consumer/pet sites, and documenting for others who don't know, like me, who came very close to losing my little loved ones. After many, many, prayers, good caring vets and vet technicians, and a very expensive week of hospitalization, they are coming home, and will need ongoing care and potent antibiotics to turn this around. I am one of the lucky ones who didn't lose their pets, and I pray that they continue to get better.

My Weimaraner, Wilson, was our first baby. We fed him expensive Science Diet brand of dog food for pretty much his whole life because that is what the vet recommended. In November of 2011, we bought a new bag and after about 1-2 weeks of eating that food, he became very ill, stopped eating and became very lethargic. I told my husband that I suspected the new bag of food, because that was the only thing that had changed. I bought a small bag of Beneful to try, but by this point, it was too late. He would not eat anything. We took him to the vet, did tests, started antibiotics, not really even knowing what was wrong. He passed away a few days later. After reading these posts, it makes me so upset to think that this could have been prevented. I am so angry that this expensive brand of dog food could have caused this! If we do get another dog, which we are hoping to do, I will never buy Science Diet again!

By the time I figured it out, it was too late and he had to be put down. I was thinking it had something to do with his age until another cat started showing signs of constipation. Although my vet does not agree that the Science Diet cat food had anything to do with it, I find it extremely odd that both cats developed constipation problems. I am now trying to find a cat food that will help with the kidney stones/crystal problem and help with the constipation. I now have to give frequent doses of Miralax to my cat so he can poop.

A few days after that, my other cat also got sick, but was able to pull through. Both went into kidney failure and tests. Ultrasound shows that they had an acute toxin (such as antifreeze) in their stomachs.
Both are indoor cats and I do not have anything toxic that they could have gotten in to. The only thing we can think of is that it was the Y/D. My cat that survived is still having issues, but the prognosis is good. The vet thinks it will take 3 months for him to fully recover and they were only on the food for 3 weeks! I am just heartbroken about losing my other cat, not to mention the costs I have endured have been in the thousands of dollars.

Someone should investigate the nutritional adequacy of Science Diet canned and dry cat food. I strongly suspect that this food gave my cats cancer and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. My cats suffered terribly and endured painful and expensive medical procedures. I had three cats at the same time: 2 of them had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and 2 of them had cancer. What are the odds? All three died young for cats (one at age 5, two at age 9). On the other hand, my cats fed with Fancy Feast lived into their upper teens in good health and had shiny coats.
That’s a sign of good nutrition, which the Science Diet cats never had. I trusted this supposedly "premium" food because it was sold at vets' offices. But vets, well-meaning though they are, basically trust the manufacturers' reps. They are not nutrition experts. Someone should make vets and pet owners aware that this food is not only not nutritionally complete but also dangerous.

I made the mistake of not reading or investigating the ingredients in Science Diet (SD) and feeding it to my beloved Boston Terriers. When one of them came down with a severe, rare, and aggressive form of cancer of the connective tissue, I stated doing some investigating into Science Diet and spoke with several vets.
Vets call this food "cancer in a bag" and note that the by-products, proteins (which are slaughterhouse leftovers like the beaks of chickens), preservatives, and chemicals make it extremely low-grade food despite the high price and millions spent on advertising and giving incentives to vets to sell the food. Some of these vets don't even realize what they are selling. It is certainly not malicious.
However, my sweet, sweet baby boy died after a brutal and brief fight with cancer at the age of 9. His brother is still with us, and I will not allow him to ever eat Science Diet again. The research and conversations I've had with pet owners regarding SD suggest that this low-grade filler chemical junk is extremely unhealthy and dangerous to our family members.
I hope someone out there in research or consumer affairs realizes the cost and pain associated with losing a pet and takes the time to prove what I have found out anecdotally that Science Diet is killing our loved ones.

I bought food for my dogs at the Veterinarian's office and have been feeding my two bichons and my cairn terrier Science Diet since they were born. They are now 6 years old. Up until now, I had not noticed any issues with the food; however, the dogs have been reacting strangely to the food the past month. I opened the container that I store their food in and bugs flew out of it. I was shocked, surprised and wondered how these bugs got in their food. Upon further inspection, I noticed that there were larvae throughout the container; therefore, I disposed of the food and thoroughly cleaned the containers.
I had purchased a brand new bag of the Science Diet Adult lite for them today. I opened it and inspected the food and found many larvae in this large bag as well. I do not plan to purchase this brand of food again and will research the best food for them. Recently the dogs have been sick vomiting and now my concern is the cause, as well as what are the long term consequences for them eating this food infected with larvae and bugs. I plan to have them examined by the veterinarian and see if they are infected with parasites.

I ran into a bag that was "bad" and has given all three dogs lameness, wobbling, and no strength to stand. The suffering of diarrhea, vomiting, and stool with mucous took about 5 days for what I called the "inoculation" period. One of them had a fever of 103.5-104.2.
I'm switching them to the cheapest pet food I can find. I am so over Hills. They have been on death's door for the past 3 weeks. It started with one dog while the other two were out of town. We originally thought he had panosteitis because of his age. I switched him to chicken and rice only and he got a lot better with an antibiotic and steroid.
When the other two dogs came back into the house, after 8 hours, they had diarrhea and the same symptoms as the first, only after ingesting from the new Bag of Adult Formula. These two were not as bad because they are older and I was able to diagnose the first one. I have thrown it out, I'll never buy Hills again. Also their condition appears to be bacterial.

Our 10-year-old Labrador mix has eaten Science Diet for the past 7 years. For around the past five, she has eaten the adult light/low calorie in 40lb bag. About 6 months ago, shortly after we opened a new bag she started throwing up. Over the next several days she developed diarrhea and started to refuse to eat. I suspected we had gotten some bad food so I picked up a small bag of something else to see if that would help. She ate the food immediately and within a couple of days was back to normal. I thought maybe the light food was hard on her digestive system and I wasn't really sure if it was the food at all. So, when we ran out of the small bag of cheap grocery store food, I went back to Science Diet but I switched to the adult regular.
About 2 weeks ago we ran out of food so I picked up a new bag and I switched back to the adult light. Over a 5-day period she went from throwing up to refusing to eat at all. She became very lethargic and started having blood in her stool and vomit. I tried feeding her some rice and carrots mashed up together and she ate it happily but threw it up about an hour later. She would drink a lot of water before I would take her outside. In the past 2.5 days I'm not sure she has really kept anything down. I took her to the vet this morning and she is staying overnight.
When I called in the afternoon I was told that she had probably eaten something bad. It's pretty clear to me now that something was wrong with the food. I will pick her up from the vet tomorrow and I'm hoping she makes a full recovery. I'm not sure if I should try to contact Science Diet and let them know about my experience. It sounds like other people have not had a good response from Science Diet. Ultimately, if Science Diet is knowingly putting out a product that is harming and in some cases killing pets they should be held accountable.

Please do not feed your animals Hill's Science Diet food. My 10-year-old Siamese has been the picture of health until now. He has been eating Hill's Science Diet c/d formula for approximately two years; it was recommended by our vet.
Three weeks ago I opened a new bag that was purchased from my vet's office. My cat ate his nighttime meal as usual. He started throwing up around 2 AM. Thinking that he had an upset stomach, I continued to feed him his c/d food. When I returned home from work the following afternoon, I found multiple areas of vomit in several rooms of the house. He has never thrown up that much.
When I actually witnessed his vomiting, it was heartbreaking. It wasn't like his rare episodes due to eating too fast. This was violent, and convulsive, and the food was also digested. I called my vet to ask if anyone had reported problems with the food, but he said no one had. When my vet examined him, he suggested that he may have a serious disease such as lymphoma. What a coincidence; my cat has been perfectly normal until I started feeding him a newly purchased bag of Hill's Science Diet. When I took his food away, the vomiting didn't stop, but drastically decreased. After researching pet food recalls for Hill's Science, I was horrified at the many, many, stories that sounded exactly like mine.
My beloved Siamese has been to his regular vet, an emergency vet where he had to spend the night and most of the next day, and yet another vet that specializes in ultrasounds and endoscopies. My "baby" has had lab work, numerous x-rays, two ultrasounds, a barium swallow procedure, and an endoscopy with biopsies taken. I am waiting on the biopsy results to know if he has the suspected lymphoma of the intestines, terrible enteritis, or gastritis. The first visit to the vet was on October 6, 2011, and today is the 13th day of October. He has been through so much in a short time. My vet bill at this point is nearing the $2,000 point, and I still don't know what is wrong.
I am fortunate that I still have him. I am praying that whatever the food did to him will not have lasting effects on his health. Please warn anyone that feeds their pet Hill's Science Diet.

The vet recommended Science Diet T/D on our first visit for our Maltese and Maltese mix, 3 and 2 years old respectively. After happily being on Blue Buffalo for 18 months, the vet convinced me, due to dental issues with the Maltese, to make the switch. I immediately noticed how dry my pups stool had become but figured this was due to the new food and its large size, although it was "small bites".
3 1/2 months in and both my dogs became severely constipated, lack of appetite, not drinking and lethargic. I assumed, since it was both my dogs and the common factor of food, it was the obvious culprit. I called the vet and told them my dogs were "blocked up" and that pumpkin was having small success, but that I was wondering if the food and the dry stools were possible indicators of an issue. I was told that the fiber contained in some Science Diet products would remove water from the system and that it was normal to have dry stools. So, their dog food is supposed to dehydrate them?
I immediately removed Science Diet from their bowl, gave them an organic canned chicken and rice food, boiled chicken, and chicken broth to get them rehydrated. I watched improvement and 3 days later my pups are finally back to normal, and tonight ate a full serving of their new diet of Orijen.
I am confident based on my sick pups and the subsequent online research of Science Diet that I was faced with huge vet costs and possibly losing my babies because of this product and will NEVER use any and will warn others of Science Diet products in the future.

Our 4-year-old Labrador became listless and would not sit or lie down all day. This was due to her pancreas overreacting to fat. Our Labrador is on a fresh food diet with very little fat. Our neighbor brought over a leftover steak for our 2 dogs, and because of the higher fat content in the steak, Maggie's pancreas "over-reacted”.
Lipase is an enzyme that breaks down fat, and Maggie's lipase level was 4000! Normal in dogs is 200! The enzymes were trying to digest the pancreas itself! Maggie almost died!
She was given only IV fluids and massive amounts of antibiotics for 3 days. After that, our vet put her on Science Diet RD canned food. This food has no fat/calories, but the label had "pork byproducts" as the first ingredient.
When asking our vet about this, he said byproducts on this food was different than what byproducts mean on regular dog food. Because Maggie was starving all the time with no fat or calories, she ate this food down enthusiastically. But over 2 weeks, not so much. And we noticed her coat changing, coarse and dry.
We started to integrate fresh food back into her diet, mixing it with the Science Diet RD food. The more she got fresh food, the better she seemed to be, and her coat started to return to the soft, smooth look as before. I asked our vet why they use this horrible food. He agreed that it might not be the best, but they are the only company out there that has done studies to prove their food helps in cases like Maggie's. And he has to go by the proven studies.
But he also agreed that Maggie may have improved on chicken and rice, but he didn't want to take any chances. I appreciate his carefulness in her care and she seems to be fine now. Although we will take great care the rest of her life to keep her away from fat and sweets so as not to over stimulate her pancreas, which could mean death to her.
I, too, think Science Diet is crap food and way too rich for most dogs. Remember, your vet gets those cans of SD food free and that's why they all seem to have it, not necessarily because it's the best.

Boy, was I wrong! I started integrating her regular food with the Science Diet just as recommended. She accepted the food fine and ate it for approximately five days without any side effects, or so I thought. By Day 6, our happy, vivacious, very energetic pup had now become gravely ill. She stopped eating, had diarrhea and was extremely lethargic. I was scared that she would not make it through the night and never get a chance to go to her vet appointment the following morning. I said a prayer and went online one last time hoping to get an answer.
Thank God, this website came up and saved my pup's life! After reading pages of stories that were so similar to mine, I immediately went to the kitchen (at 2:00 a.m.) and boiled chicken breast and rice. I was able to feed her and I kept watching over her for the rest of the night. To my surprise, she had regained strength through the night and her morning poop had become more solid. In addition, she had regained her appetite as I continued with the chicken/rice. Within less than 24 hours, she was back to herself and is now happier than ever.

Sadly, we had to put him to sleep! ONLY 7 years old, raised by her since he was 2 weeks old, we thought he ate something but reading this site, we are rethinking his demise! OMG, please pull this crap. This cat was her therapeutic cat and she is disabled, and since we found 2 new kitties. BUT Milo... we feel we killed him!

I have mixed breed chiweenie who we adopted at 6 weeks. He is now a year and a half. The pound provided us with a bag of Science Diet dry dog food so we kept him on this for some time. Then we noticed he started to throw up a lot and had bloody stools so my vet suggested we make a homemade mixture of boiled meat mainly chicken, carrots and rice to calm his stomach. We did that and in a few days he was fine. We also bought some organic foods and he loved them as well, but he really liked the Science Diet dry so we continued adding that to his food so there wasn't too much of a change.
He had bouts of throwing up that can't be explained so for the last 4 months or so we have given him exclusively the homemade mixed with some of the organic can food that he liked. He was fine. Well I found a small bag of Science Diet that I had purchased and never opened so I thought why not use it up and I started mixing a few pieces here and there into his food. He ate it and that was about a week ago. Now he isn't eating again (not even his dog treats) and he's throwing up again and had blood in his stool. I would have never thought it was but It has to be the Science Diet because it is the only common denominator. Science Diet needs to take this stuff off the market.

My issue is that we would buy the 20 lb bag and now the 17 1/2 lb bag is more expensive than the 20 lb. What is the deal. This is not right to get less food and pay more. There are 1,000 of people who buy science diet because they believe in the product. THIS IS NOT RIGHT!!!!!! What reasoning can you give me? Please send me coupons to make up the difference of having to pay more for less food. It does not seem like this should be able to be done. Thank you for your consideration.

I have six Chihuahuas--mom, dad and their four kids. I bought Science Diet for a good food for my pets; what a mistake. I got the Science Diet that was from the vet’s. After only one feeding, three of my babies had seizures. I took the food away and thought that was that. Later in the month, after talking to the vet, I again tried to let them eat the SD. Never again. Four of them had seizures this time. This food is contaminated with something that is extremely toxic to small dogs. I recommend anyone with small dogs, or even large dogs, to beware of this product. I have switched to cooking for them myself and have had no problems.

Our yellow Labrador got sick suddenly this April and she had a tumor on her spleen also. Unfortunately, she wasn't so lucky and had cancer in her lungs and liver. Their mother is still living at 16 and has been fed Purina all her life. I am so angry. I am so sorry that we ever started using what is supposed to be the best dog food there is.

I have been feeding my dogs Science Diet for years. They loved it. I have two English bulldogs and two pugs. But recently I have noticed a big change in the color of the food. The food is not as dark and does not seem to have as many oils. The smell of the food is also quite different.
The last two bags of food ,my dogs don't want to eat it. I thought at first it was because summer was here and they were not as hungry. But when they do eat, they have loose yellow stool (the same color as the food) and their hair does not seem as lush and shiny. One of the bulldogs now has dandruff. The vet has recommended that I change their food.

If you want top grade quality dry food, try Orijen, Acana, Natures Logic or Evo. If u want top quality raw food, try Primalas; these foods contain more meats and barely no grains at all and the other ingredients are of top quality not fillers and bull.

Never in a million years would I have given this food to my dogs if I thought it would harm them in any way. I will never recommend this company or buy any of their food again.
My husband and I really think this was the cause of their sudden downhill slide and ultimate death because it was the only difference in their lives. We are devastated by these losses, and can't believe that with all of the complaints I read about the food (unfortunately not in time) this company sells, that the problems have not been looked into. I couldn't understand what was making him sick because he hadn't eaten anything other than SD Pet I/D food. He ended up going to the vet, getting hospitalized overnight, with IV hook up, x-rays and blood test, which cost me $500. He had gotten a bacteria. At this time, the vet told me it was something he ate. I explained I had not fed him anything other than the pet I/D food.
So I went home and checked the cans and found that they had expired. I don't know where I purchased them. I had run out and purchased six cans from one location, another eight cans from another location and another five cans from another location. Since I couldn't figure out exactly which vet/store I purchased them from, I was unable to return them. All three locations claimed to not have any expired food on their shelves. So I was unable to return them. At $50 a case of 12, that's a pretty high expense for cans that I cannot feed my dog. If you can compensate me somehow for this expired food, it would be great. I have an 11 week old kitten who were fed exclusively Science Diet Kitten canned food (of varying assortments) and started mixing in Science Diet's Nature's Best kitten kibble. Two days later, one of the kittens started exhibiting urgent urination and I noticed blood was present. After going to an incompetent vet and spending $1000 to diagnose the issue, I went to a second opinion. Urinalyses were performed and calcium oxalate crystals were present. A sonogram showed several stones in his bladder as well.
The second vet told me to take him off of Science Diet as it is too acidic and can cause uroliths and a disorder called hypercalcemia. This can result in those crystals causing the bleeding and the stones becoming lodged in the ureters (the tubes from kidney to bladder) or the urethra (the tubes from bladder). Additionally, I noticed after I switched to a different, low acid, high fiber grocery store brand, the other cats in the house preferred this food to Science Diet.
Also, I noticed in the Science Diet canned food was, often times, pieces of arteries and other unidentifiable sinewy pieces that were hard and difficult to smash a knife, let alone my fingers, and much less, a kitten's esophagus. If this is such an acclaimed product that uses USDA approved meat products and higher standards above "other brands" I should not be finding this stuff in the food.
We are currently spending thousands of dollars to diagnose and correct the potentially life threatening condition caused by this product and we still aren't sure if he's going to make it through this. We must try and find the funds to pay for the surgery to remove these stones that will inevitably block his urinary tract and cause renal failure.

I took my new puppy to the vet for his first check-up. I had done some research on pet foods that were what I thought to be the healthiest for him and what are not. I currently have him on Blue Buffalo which I think is a healthy choice. When we were at the vet, she asked me what food I had him on and when I said "Blue Buffalo." She gave me a strange look and said she had never heard of it but would highly recommend Science Diet. But she said that her dog is on Purina and it’s good too without even bothering to ask if my dog was doing fine on his current diet. So why is she recommending this again? He's doing just fine! She gave me a bag to try for my puppy.
Since this is the vet and I want to trust her, I slowly introduced him to the Science Diet and about 1 hour after his feedings, he would make ‘cow-pies’ in the yard. When I switched him back to Blue, he was just fine. Later on, I found a website called **** which analyzes ingredients in dog foods and rates them on a 6 star scale. I was shocked to find that the Science Diet the vet gave me for my growing puppy is rated one star. The top 5 ingredients are of low quality. There is no meat in this particular food I was given but only by-products and fillers, to name a few. Needless to say, it is not recommended on the website. The food he is on that the vet never heard of however, rates 4 stars and for the price, we will stick with that.
I am blown away that the Veterinarian would recommend this brand and I also find it very odd that every vet office I have been inside stocks Science Diet. Apparently, do they all have the exact same opinions? I'm not sure if it's a conspiracy but I find it very hard to believe that every Vet practice I have been to have the exact same opinion on what brand of food is best suited for our pets especially with the first ingredients being corn and by-products. Sure, they have vitamins in the food and all but isn't the bad stuff they put in just as significant for our pet's health as all the good stuff?

I have two 12-year-old Corgi's, they are brothers. I also had a Keeshond, who died a number of years ago. All three dogs have been fed one form or another of prescription Science Diet for their entire life, usually RD and TD for weight management and tartar control. The Keeshond died of a kidney tumor rupturing, I was too young to know why at the time until recently when my Corgis have become ill and I asked my mother about what had happened. One of the Corgi's just had his spleen removed because of a large tumor, which upon biopsy, has been identified with a type of cancer that usually attacks the liver and not the spleen. All three have had Cushing's disease.
There are only two things consistent with all three dogs, the water and the dog food. After looking into the ingredients of the dog food, I did some research online to find out more. I shared this info and all family members who have dogs have chosen something other than Science Diet for their pets. I chose Nutro Ultra figuring. What had happened with the melamine had been fixed and the ingredients appeared to be of good nutritional value.
Well after reading your recent article on official secrets related to Nutro, I have just decided to make another change. Since changing to Nutro Ultra, the Corgi with the splenectomy has been vomiting and been lethargic. The other Corgi has been extremely thirsty, having to go outside to do his business multiple times at night, which has never happened previously and has not been eating his food, and opting for anything else he can find, including going through our garbage cans.
This is quite aggravating to find that our government is not protecting our pets with better regulation. What commercial food is good for our dogs? Does anyone have any non-vested and honest suggestions? Where can I find an analysis of dog foods to see what is really in there?

My cat was diagnosed with pancreatitis in March 2009. Although we tried all the sensitive stomach foods the vet prescribed, the only foods that didn't cause vomiting were Science Diet Original Dry Formula and Canned Meow Mix Tuna and Shrimp. Since Science Diet is supposed be better than Meow Mix, we've been feeding that for several months without any vomiting. In July 2009, we purchased another small bag of Science Diet and within 5 minutes of eating, my cat was vomiting. Thinking she had a pancreatitis attack, we withheld food for 24 hours, as recommended by our vet. Withholding food for so long is extremely stressful on our baby and watching her starve is agonizing. She began vomiting soon after eating more Science Diet.
Thinking maybe the bag had gone rancid, we purchased another bag with the same results. Every time she vomits, we have to withhold food for 24 hours to "reset" the pancreas. For the past two months, our cat has had recurring episodes of vomiting with Science Diet. She has not had any episodes of vomiting with Meow Mix. I suspect there is something wrong with the food, at the manufacturer's level, and strongly encourage a recall. We will no longer feed this food to our cat. After reading all the recent complaints on your website about Science Diet, my suspicions that the food is foul are confirmed.

My heart goes out to everyone experiencing problems with any pet product because we trust that companies polish their own products. I know what I went through after that one incident since I fed one of the foods from one of the recalls. I would like to thank this site for the accounts on Science Diet. Our recently adopted puppy who got sick (not related, but I will look into this now) was fed some Science Diet puppy while housed at the vets. I don't use the product, but to everyone who is concerned about their dogs' health, please check out the following publications:
Whole Dog Journal - This is like a Consumer Reports for dogs. I have saved more money and learned more about our dog's health than anywhere else. They rate the top 10 dry and canned and frozen foods every year. They accept no advertising so there is no conflict of interest. The lives of our dogs have changed so much for the better since I began reading this magazine. Someone told me that vets like to push Science Diet because the company helps them through vet school. I don't know if this is true or not. Second thing that has been very helpful to me is a book called The Nature of Animal Healing by Dr. Martin Goldstein. When you find out what is put in a lot of dog food, it will make you sick (not referring to Science Diet, but many of the store brands).
Some of the good brands that have appeared in the top 10 dog foods are Innova, Natural Balance, Evo, Wysong, Newman's, etc. They are mostly at pet stores or online. Newman's I have seen at Target stores. An excellent report done by, I believe, it was the Animal Protection Institute explained all the stuff not considered fit for human consumption (like tumors cut off) that is put into a lot of the store brand dog food. Again, not referring to Science Diet. I know little about them. The greatest gift you can give to your canine friend is not the fun gifts we think of, but rather the gift of knowledge about their health and safety. I hope this helps you folks out. I usually don't post online, no time, but wanted to get this info out to you. I now am a much more informed canine consumer!

Although she managed to survive that ordeal, her digestive system never returned completely to normal and she would have problems with vomiting and diarrhea and constipation. The vet put her on Hills ID Feline Prescription Diet for about a year; after which time, the vet recommended trying her on Science Diet. I was very skeptical about ever buying Science Diet again but the vet indicated that not only now was it safe, but it was a very good quality food.
For over a year, everything was okay until the morning of June 15, 2009 after she ate from a newly opened can of Science Diet Indoor Chicken and within 30 minutes of eating it started vomiting all over the kitchen floor. Even though I immediately threw the food out, by the time I got home from work, there was a lot more vomit and quarter sized spots of bright red blood on the kitchen floor. She was extremely sick, lethargic and dehydrated. I rushed her to the vet and she had to be euthanized. I advised Science Diet of these details and the serial number from the can but never heard anything back from them. Apparently, Science Diet is having a big problem again and it is not being reported. This is a sin.
