I have a 4 year toy poodle that just would not eat dog food. It would either make her sick or she just would not eat it, I was very worried about her and just on a whim I purchased a bag of Hill's Science Small Paws and she loves it! This has been a godsend to my family. We love our fur baby, she is a extremely important part of our family and to see her eat something that is healthy and she loves. She is more alert and active since eating Hill's Science. This is a great dog food!

I have been using Science Diet since we adopted our Lab-GSH mix four years ago. It was supposed to be high in animal protein and low on grains. Well, something changed. A month ago, while I was away, our pup had a seizure. Then a couple of weeks later, another. The vet says, genetic disposition, don't worry. But we noticed she is much more picky about eating, and sometimes chooses not to eat. She was also an eager eater. Noticed the composition of the bits were clearly different. Now, she won't even finish a bowl of food, wet or dry. I'm pretty sure something has changed, if I can't see it, our dog definitely knows, and is not happy about it. Looking for something better.

When we made the switch a couple of weeks ago to Hills Science Diet I thought I was buying the best for our puppy. A couple of days after he started eating the food he threw up. I know that is not uncommon when switching foods so we continued to feed it to him. Recently I noticed he was eating more grass and today he wouldn't eat a thing. He was lethargic and overall not well. I spoke to an animal professional who told me some dogs have a negative reaction to Hills Science Diet dog food and to take it away from him. I have now removed it out of my house and started feeding my puppy pumpkin puree to help settle his stomach. For as sick as my puppy was acting - there is no way I will ever purchase Science Diet again.

Best diets on the Market. A must read. Ok everyone I am sure you're thinking no way. Well yes. I have a 12 yr old male Siamese, Balinese cat who is 12 going on 2. I used to have him on other diets, I got him from my vet at 5 yrs old and he was on whatever the cats opened. They had him on Science Diet and he was a gorgeous cat, beautiful fur and healthy. When I got him I decided after all the hype about grain free diets to try them. One is no longer on the market, thanks Smucker's. Because of you I now have my cat on foods that are good for him. :)

The other dry food was Blue and within two years of putting him on Blue, my cat developed neck lesions on 4 teeth and had to have them pulled. The vet said he thought it might be stomatitis but it wasn't! It was all the multiple pre and probiotics they were adding into the food. If you ate that many pre and probiotics your gut would be killing you. They only need lactobacillus if they are out of balance and you can use your own Culterelle and put in canned food or sprinkle on dry food. I use one for me and half for him. Since I began using Science Diet he is no longer vomiting, has normal stools, no teeth have been pulled, no neck lesions. IT WAS NOT STOMATITIS! When too many pre probiotics are added, it disturbs the natural flora and causing bacteria to go up the esophagus into the mouth and develop neck lesions.

I took him off the NO GRAIN DIETS, put him on Science Diet optimal care and also as he got older he is 12 now I have him on indoor 12 + and also on Youthful Vitality. My kitty is healthy, and happy and never in better health. I will NEVER put my cat on a no grain diet. What do they eat in the wild, birds, mice etc and what do birds and mice eat? GRAINS!! When someone tells you corn gluten meal, it is that tiny piece of white in a kernel of corn, IT IS PLANT PROTEIN. Do not let people tell you that grain free is better. NEWS FLASH FROM TV 6 it is not better for your animals. They just had a detailed news story on no grain not being good for your pets. I will stay with SD as long as I can. I just hope they remove the wheat again...but my cat loves it and won't eat canned nor human food. So he gets a variety with SD. Don't let the commercials or pet stores tell you different. No Grain diets are not better for cats or dogs.

I rescued a black Lab back in March. He was having issues with digestion and my vet wrote a prescription for the Hills Science Diet i/d Digestive Care Dog Food. I purchased a 8.5 pound bag of the dry dog food at my vet's clinic. He ate the food for two weeks and had significant approval in his bowel movements and he appeared to be feeling better and having more energy.

Recently I ordered a large bag from Chewy.com and fed him from this bag. After two meals my dog began to shake and tremble uncontrollably and appeared to be terrified. This went on for 5 days over a holiday weekend. He would not leave his cage nor go outside to relieve himself. I took him to the vet and she prescribed anxiety medication. Nothing changed. I kept suspecting something was wrong with the i/d bag of food I received from Chewy.com. I went to the vet and purchased a 8.5 bag and after just two feeding he was back to normal.

After consulting with my vet I contacted Hills Customer Service. They advised me they would have Chewy.com refund my purchase and that they would send me coupons in the mail. To this date I only received an email survey from Hills on how my complaint was handled and I received two five dollar coupons. That's it! No apology letter, no follow up, no concern of how that food made my dog so ill. I am considering have the food analyzed by a lab. Please be aware. I would not want another dog and family to suffer like we did. This all occurred in June 2019.

After using Hill's Science Diet for 20 years for both my cats & dogs, I am appalled to learn that they outsourced production of portions of their product to China. Many pets died as a result of their greed. What concerns me also is that this product was recommended to me by my veterinarian. I gladly paid a premium for a product that I thought would be the best for my pets health.

The fact that commercial dog manufacturers have overlooked is that pet owners do not think of their pets as disposable. We value them as much as our own family/children. Because of Hill's negligence in maintaining strict quality standards in directly overseeing the production of their products, I AM BOWING OUT OF ALL COMMERCIAL DOG FOODS FOREVER. I have educated myself and will continue to do so in order to prepare a nutritionally balanced diet in my own home! YOU HAVE ALL BETRAYED MY TRUST!

I cured my cat of diabetes after learning I was feeding him the wrong food. Went on grain free diet and glucose dropped to around the 120's. It was approximately 500. Started him on the W/D because of weight issues and because it was basically grain free. Recently had his teeth cleaned and saw the glucose was over 200??? Looked at the can again and lo and behold there is wheat flour as 7th ingredient. Called Hills and they said the recipe was "upgraded" with wheat flour as of October 2018!!! Upgraded!!!! Cats don't need GLUTEN!!! DO NOT BUY! I have had other issues with Science Diet and have already reviewed another product. It makes me angry that Vets take a kick back from the sales. What are you going to do as one still needs a Vet. I love my local Vet, still makes me angry.

I have had cats for 30 years. Early on I thought it was crazy to purchase one of the high priced foods. But when we were stationed in the Philippines we adopted a Filipino kitten (we already had a 3 year old cat). The kitten was scrawny and bony, and had coarse, wiry hair. I found out those were typical features of those cats. One day as I was leaving the veterinarian on base I saw the vets interacting with some stray cats outside. They were beautiful, soft and healthy looking. I assumed they were not Filipino cats but the vets told me yes they were Filipino cats. I asked why they looked so healthy and they told me it was because they fed them Science Diet. I immediately switched my cats to SD and sure enough, the Filipino cat quickly became beautiful, healthy, and softer than ever. Our other cat improved on it as well.

I don’t know how long the Filipino cat lived because my ex-husband got custody of her, but my other cat lived to be 18. Meanwhile I adopted a stray cat that was estimated to be 5-10 years old. She already had Feline Leukemia. I had her for 15 years, meaning she lived to be roughly 20-25 years old, even with the Feline leukemia. She was never sick in all those years, until the day before she died but I knew it was her time to go. My vet was always amazed by her. I fed her SD the entire time I had her.

I have moved numerous times over the years, and therefore had to switch vets as many times. I have asked each vet about the SD, as I had always heard some unfavorable things about it. Every single vet has told me that SD is a great food, and that ALL of the foods have fillers but SD is the only one that discloses it on their label. Three years ago I adopted a dog (approximately 8 years old). I had her fully checked out by my vet and she had no health issues whatsoever. I decided to listen to all the pop culture stuff about the pet foods, so I put her on Blue Buffalo grain free.

Within 6 months of feeding her the Blue Buffalo she rapidly became 10 lbs overweight! I was feeding her less than the daily recommended amount. I switched her 4 or 5 times over the next year or so to various weight management foods. She didn’t like most of them, and didn’t lose any weight at all. I finally relented and switched her to SD Perfect Weight and she has lost 6 pounds over 6 months. She loves the food, and remarkably, about 2 weeks after switching, her energy level had noticeably increased and she seemed happier. She is now about 11 years old.

Oh, and one more thing. The manager at our local Petsmart told me several months ago that Science Diet had been bought by Mars candy bar company. That FALSE info delayed my switch back to SD. Fortunately I mentioned that to my vet who told me that was false and supported my switch. Bottom line....I think I’m going to stick with Science Diet.

Not satisfied with the diagnosis I took her back 2 days later and found she was unexpectedly in kidney failure. We had no idea what happened only to find a month later that the ID Science Diet food was recalled. Now here at Easter she is still having kidney troubles and has been hospitalized twice. They need to be held accountable for their lack of testing the products they sell or they need to go into a different line of work.

I was recommended by the vet to use Science Diet when I rescued the two little dogs. I have tried changing it a few times but the dogs seem to like it much better than Blue Buffalo. They have the food down and eat whenever they are hungry. I don't trust any company with really being a good product for your dog because they are not required to. Wet food upsets my little ones and so I don't use any of it because I have tried them all. Because I know they are trying to make the shelf life very long so they can ship and forget it.

Convinced by the greedy vet we stupidly bought the stuff for years, until our Pekinese dogs developed kidney problems and obesity. We put the dogs on homemade organic foods - mostly whole rabbit meat and within months they were much better. However, the damage had been done and they both died within days of each other. My dog had an upset stomach and had been throwing up. After a trip to the vet, I was given anti-nausea medication and Science Diet Digestive Care i/d with Turkey because it was supposed to be easy on his stomach. The nausea medication was supposed to be strong and vomiting unlikely, but he kept throwing up. He was taken to emergency care where an ultrasound was performed and nothing was found that was concerning. After returning home, he puked another time and in looking into what hospitalizing a pet involves, I found the notice of the recall. My cans were of the right SKU of the recalled product, but not the correct lot number. I stopped feeding him this product and went back to his normal food before he was ill, and he's kept it down. I believe the recall is broader than the lots currently listed on the site. I will be very reluctant to use this brand again as it would seem I've been accidentally prolonging my dog's symptoms by using it.

Presently, it’s the only food that doesn’t make my dog sick with diarrhea and vomiting. She also has terrible food allergies that present themselves as hives and hot spots. I fed Hill's lamb and rice until she needed the senior food and I still do not have any issues. I did get a few cans of the recall food. I know she must have eaten at least a couple. Thankfully she made it through. She’s ok and still on Hill's and doing well at 12. Most people that meet her assume she is far younger than she is. That says a lot for the brand.

When I heard of the recall, I contacted my Vet to see if the cases he ate were part of the recall. They checked their records and found they received a shipment of the affected food in September. Bo started eating it in October.

The Vet called Hill's, who confirmed. I contacted Hill's. Finally spoke to a Lisa on the 8th, who was very sorry for my loss. She spoke to her supervisor and then said that they would cover his vet bills. She would send a packet for me to fill out. And... No surprise... I've received nothing. I miss Bo. This food is poison plain and simple! My eight year old lab/beagle mix has always had weight and skin issues, grain free all the way. When our vet tech told us grain free was now classified as dangerous because of the recent heart disease link we agreed as a family to switch her over. All went well until we ran out of the old food and could no longer mix the old with the new. Her thirst has become unquenchable, she was leaking around the house (which we thought was a UTI) and I'm talking about puddles. My Dog is modest. She doesn't pee in the house, it just doesn't happen.

We bring her to the vet who also thinks it’s a UTI. Three days into medication we find a massive puddle on our living room couch, doctor tests her urine again, this time for diabetes (yes, she was mimicking all the symptoms) and no dice. Dr. gives us a list of options, Lyme Disease, Cushing's, and then finally the god awful 'C' word. Recommends we get her in for x-rays ASAP. 600.00$ later as well as more blood tests and nothing. They now recommend a deep tissue ultra-sound.

Fast forward to TONIGHT 12/25, CHRISTMAS DAY we walk into the living room and there's four spots ranging in size where she relieved herself, once again, doesn't smell like urine because of how diluted it is and how much she's been drinking. Never in her life has my dog been this thirsty. Now tomorrow she gets to go for an ultra-sound, though after plenty of research and reviews on her here it's clear that this food, and I use the word food lightly, because it's garbage more than anything. It seems like more and more dog owners are having the same issues. Almost 90$ a bag and it’s done nothing but make my dog sick. I'm terrified to see the side effects she'll have coming off of it. Hoping for the best but expecting the worst. This company should be thoroughly investigated into what's going into our dog’s food! Buyer beware!!!

Updated on 02/01/2019: Science Diet just came out with a recall today 1/31/19 on their wet dog food. I'm glad I took my dogs off it when I did. This is such a horrible food and people have lost their dogs from getting so sick!

Original Review: This food is nothing but an expensive bag of CORN period! There is no nutritional value here. My 2 poms tried this. Because of recurrent UTIs and stones I reluctantly put them on it. Asked my vet if all 4 can go on it, so few months now later my Doxie was peeing in the house and drinking constantly. 300.00 later they thought he had water diabetes. Did all the testing. Now vet says may be too much sodium in the food. Put him back on old food which was Annamaet best food ever! Used it for 10 years. Expensive but worth it. Since my dogs been off it their coat is dull horrible so went to my guy at his store for recommendations for not using the old one but he said to use one with lower phosphate. It's the purple and black bag now, they were on the Aqualok. My dogs were still constantly hungry on C/D. Here's the deal the vets who sell it get a kickback on it.

The recommended feeding is 1 can per day for the puppy size - which means food must be divided and stored in the refrigerator. It would be nice to be able to buy smaller size cans. Also an opener must be used on this can. I am trying to switch the little puppy (large breed) to dry as my Vet would like - but the little dog likes the wet food. I spoon the food from the can - bring to room temperature in the microwave, stir in a little water, and add a little dry. This puppy likes the food -- is growing fine with it - has gone from under 4 pounds to almost 12 in two months. I don't know yet what breed he is - only that he will be a fairly large dog. I bought the Puppy Food for Large Breed Dog - but he is not ready for the size kibble - still prefers the smaller, easier to chew bites.

The next day his balls were cherry red and blistered and after dropping $300 at the vet (where they sell Science Diet) they let me know it was an allergic reaction and to never give it to him again. I’m not sure what it’s like for everyone but my experience was terrible!

My Saint Shepherd puppy does well with this food. I buy her the Large Breed Puppy type and mix it in with cheaper sweet potato/pumpkin puppy food, usually from Nutro or Nature's Way. She's gaining weight and size steadily with no issues and she gobbles it up. When I rescued her she was on an adult Iams dog food diet and it was causing her vomiting and diarrhea. Didn't help that she had hookworm either. Since being on this food with the high fiber food mix she has stopped vomiting and no more explosive diarrhea.

When I go to rebuy the food, I do get asked if it's any good from the ladies at the counter. I guess since a lot of people have complained about it. But unless I see some change in her I'll keep her on the puppy food. I feel like all dogs react differently to different foods and no food is perfect. Monitor your animal's reaction to it before committing to a brand. Buy a small bag and let them eat it for a week before making a decision if it's right for your pet.

Ok. I am not sure if this is the food or coincidence. I was advised by my vet to change up his diet because he may be allergic to the existing dog food we were feeding him (was Merrick). My labrador kept getting an ear infection and he thought it was from the food we were feeding him. So we tried the Hill's brand as recommended by the vet (sensitive skin type). One day later my dog in the middle of the night had a seizure (which scared the you know what out of me). He’s only 4 years old and healthy as an ox (96lbs).

Called the vet the next day and was advised if anything seemed abnormal with him. I said no other than the seizure. All his vitals were great and he was spunky to play and his appetite was great too. Fast forward another 2 weeks later, & he had another seizure at night. Called vet & we are doing blood work in the morning. Hope all works out. By the way, we never had one issue with him in the 4 years we have had him and he always has had a chronic ear infection as well. Also my vet said he may be allergic to something in the Hill's food. I was thinking the ear infection, but he said unlikely. I’m hoping that find the issue.

I made the huge mistake of wanting to change things up for them so I bought a little bit of Science Diet to do a gradual food change. I did the proper ratio amount maybe even less and that’s when everything went south! My adult cats started drooling excessively and vomiting up yellow chunky food. They all have terrible diarrhea. My sphynx is so bad that it literally just runs out of him as he tries to make it to the litter box. He is bloated and has shakes. The kitten just got diarrhea. I took my cats to the vet and was told they are very nauseated and dehydrated and to get rid of Science Diet immediately! I have a 19 year old Boston Terrier/Boxer mix. He went for his annual checkup on May 14 and everything was perfect other than slightly elevated kidney levels. The vet recommended I put him on Science Diet K/D to slow the progression. Right away I noticed that he wasn't having as many bowel movements, he used to go at least twice a day and now he's down to one small bowel movement a day. Just 17 days after starting on 6/1 I noticed blood in his urine, which has continued for the past 3 days.

I am taking back to the veterinarian tomorrow but I will definitely be stopping this food immediately. He has always been extremely healthy and I am convinced the Science Diet food is responsible for the blood in urine and altered bowel movements. I really appreciate everyone's warnings here, just wish I would've found them sooner! Hoping that since he's only been on the food for 21 days it's not too late to undo the damage. I don't think my veterinarian had bad intentions, but really disgusted that this food that is $65 a bag is actually hurting my dog rather than helping him.

My Vet says there is no other options? There are plenty of better food on the market that are ok for a diabetic dog. You just have to pay attention to the amount of fat, fiber, carbs and protein and make sure they fall within a certain range.

Also check ingredients for type of carbs etc...etc... Some pet owners say their dogs on this are regulated but wow they take a lot of insulin!! Other say they cannot get them regulated on this and when they switched food they began regulating. I am getting my dog off this junk asap. I love my dog and my dog is NOT eating this junk anymore. I have been using Nature's Instinct brand food without any issues for my Pom and my Pit for a few years without any issues. The vet didn't suggest I try a new food, he said if I didn't give him special Science Diet food, he would die. So I bought the ridiculously expensive (for an unnatural food) Science Diet Digestive Care dog food. He gets real chicken every night and the dry food throughout the day, he's a grazer. About a week after giving him this food he has broken out in a rash to the point where he's losing fur, his stool has gotten so loose that there is now blood mixed in it, and his appetite is dwindling everyday. I didn't think it could be the food until about an hour ago when I went to the pet store to buy booties so he would stop scratching.

The employee had asked me what food I was using and if the rash was on his sides. I told him that it was Science Diet and that the rash was on his sides, and, he informed me that he has many customers that have complained about their pets breaking out from Science Diet food. He told me to look for chicken by-product meal. I came home and looked at the ingredients and found it was in his food. After reading these horror stories I am not only disgusted that I gave my dog something without researching it first, but, that my vet enforced this poisonous food.

My mother fed her Shih-Tzu Science Diet dry food for years. We just had to put her down for renal failure. I don't have the heart to tell her that I have found reviews stating that this food caused renal failure in their pets as well. Please do your homework regarding this product. If I had my little man wouldn't be so uncomfortable at the moment. Worst part, Monday I have to take him back to the vet, spend another 3-4 hundred dollars in an attempt to get him healthy again. The prescription food that I trusted my vet and Science Diet to help my 'son' sadly made him more ill than he originally was.

One day she pooped 6 times when she usually goes once or twice daily. She also had episodes of gagging/dry heaving. In addition, she seemed to have less energy. No run like hell events Havanese are known to do. Finally after stool tested and taking her Vet prescribed meds (which our plan did not cover), she felt a little better. Fortunately we got credit for our return.

We then chose to transition her to Fromm Puppy Gold. Her stool quickly returned to being firm, no vomiting/gagging dry heaves. Energy level returned to normal as well. Plus she now loves the taste far more and eats most of the servings. After seeing other dogs with similar symptoms I felt compelled to write. Hopefully, this bring attention/awareness to our concern. That was 5 days ago. She loves her food, and ate the required amount the first day, after that she did not want to know about it. I persevered for 4 days and she would not eat it, actually she started to go outside and bury it in the garden which I think it is where it belongs. I thank GOD that she is smarter than me, as she knows when something is wrong with what I was feeding her. I gave her some fresh food on the 4th day as she was starving. My other little dog Toby would not even look at it from the first day, and as he did not need to lose weight, I gave him his usual food.

They are both good eaters and usually eat most things, so there is definitely a problem with this food. DON'T BUY IT. IT IS EXPENSIVE AND CRAP. I have been feeding my dog Science Diet since he was a tiny puppy based on the recommendations of my vet. We started him on the puppy kibble and moved him to the adult food when he hit 1 year of age. The entire time we've had him, he's been very skinny. I have taken him to the vet over and over and asked them why he wasn't eating. His ribs could be seen and his spine was sticking out. I was terribly worried about him and felt like I'd done something wrong somewhere as a dog owner to have him looking so scrawny. The vet assured me that there was nothing wrong and even had me paying for the Science Diet wet foods that are supposed to be calorie dense. Still my dog refused to eat. It got so bad I took to coating his food in peanut butter and standing with him to coax him through eating. It's been a nightmare.

Yesterday when I let him inside, he zipped to the cat food bowl and began desperately looking for food in there. That was a clue that there was nothing wrong with his appetite. On that hunch I went out and bought an entirely different brand of food for him. The instant it was in his bowl, he was wolfing it down and licking the bowl clean. All this time, he has apparently just hated Science Diet so much that he'd rather starve than eat it. That's a huge warning sign when it comes to food. Why would an animal rather die of starvation than eat this brand?? All that time, money on vet bills and fear over losing a member of my family came down to a dog food so bad that my pet almost killed himself rather than eat this stuff. Please take this as a warning! Do not feed this mess to your animals. I will NEVER buy Science Diet again.

So I had a good hunch that Lou had/has hypothyroidism. Come his annual vet appt had Lou tested and levels indicated a positive diagnosis... so decided to seek out a "specialist" in this field as a general vet usually knows a little about a lot... so as not to waste time as we all have. Back and forth to the vet with no diagnosis and then they send you to the "Specialist". Anyway meds are not helping. Lou has not lost a pound... 7 months now. Changed to another weight controlled food and still nothing. Vet wants to keep Lou in the meds. Hmm. Why!?? And suggested Hill's Metabolic Food.

I strongly expressed my discomfort in switching to the Hill's brand since I had two of my other dogs (crossed over now) on R/D and K/D... Waiting to pay for the R/D one Day a couple of years ago just happen to look at the ingredients and was totally in disbelief that "corn" was the first ingredient!!!! Are you kidding me!!?? Like so many reviews... I too trusted my vet and didn't even think to look at the ingredients since it was a "prescription" food as well. After all wouldn't a "prescription" food offer the "best" of ingredients??? NOT!!!! I immediately took my dog off of the R/D. Feeling so desperate to get this excess weight off of Lou... was gonna suck it up for a couple of months. And SO glad I thought to take a look at reviews. Have a guardian angel looking out for our "loves" through these reviews. And to know these are all so true... as we all would not be spending time writing our experiences. Rather wanting to share and help others.

I WILL NOT EVER USE THIS FOOD. Thank you everyone for confirming my "gut" feeling. And as one reviewer commented... trust your gut... not always your vet. I spoke with several vet techs and I learned that Hill's gives lots of money to the vet schools and/or students and in exchange these vets sell the products. So that's why all these vets sell this crap food. How they can sleep at night is beyond my comprehension. It all boils down to money... Greed!! Keep doing your online research everyone. I was walking my Cairn Terrier and came upon a fair in my community that had the SPCA there with a dozen adoptable dogs. I wasn't looking for another dog, but my dog was interested so we interacted with 11 small dogs and she didn't take to one of them. Finally I was leaving, without looking at the one large dog when my dog began pulling the lead. Behind a screen was the one large dog a yellow hound dog mix, who was emaciated and was obviously a recent stray addition. Both dogs tails were furiously wagging and I could tell immediately they had some connection. I wanted another indoor dog and not a 50-pound dog that was rail thin and would obviously carry 20 or 30 more pounds.

On top of that the dog was coughing continually, but was only 9 months old. I found out she was abandoned when the previous owner had passed away and was left outside for two weeks without food or water in the only cold month that year in my part of Florida. I took her home because I just couldn't leave her and immediately went to the vet who gave me a bag of hills science diet for large breeds 1-5 years old and she loved it. When that bag was finished I purchased a bag of even more expensive dry food, that I won't mention and changed to that gradually as instructed when changing foods.

Well after feeding her this food for two more months I noticed that she wasn't eating it as readily and had stopped adding weight after putting on ten pounds eating the Hills. I went back to the hills science diet and she has been eating it now for the last 18 months and weighs 75 pounds of muscle. She is very active, extremely healthy and loves my Cairn terrier and has become a new dog. I think when changing dog foods you have to do so gradually number one so their systems can adjust. My Cairn eats the dry food the Hound dog didn't like, just a different variety and the ingredients in both are very healthy. I suppose a rat in dog food would turn someone off, however this food has done my dog very well and I don't mind spending the extra money because I want them both with me for a long time.

When I get the bag from my distributor, I empty it into another large sealed container immediately after opening it. I have never found anything untoward, noticed foul odors or had a problem at all. If I had noticed a foul odor I would throw it away no matter what I paid and get something new. When I see the negative reviews and I understand other experiences vary, however this food was recommended by my vet, the dog loves it and has thrived eating it. She's now going on 3 years old and my Cairn is almost 10, but they play with each other all day and both are great, happy dogs and I trust my vet and own experiences better than other unknown reviews.

The first time that I put this out, all three cats ate it. That was it, they ate it once and wouldn't go near it again. A few days later two of the cats started to vomit. All of them were lethargic, wouldn't eat anything and started to lose weight. All three continued to deteriorate. I took them to the vet and blood test showed severe renal failure. So far, we were able to save one with hydration to flush toxins out of the kidneys. One is very ill and still hanging on. The largest, most athletic and also biggest eater, died of kidney failure. In a matter of weeks, my entire, healthy animal family has been wiped out. As you would expect, I am heartsick about this. Please do not buy this food.

I've been feeding my cats the c/d and m/d prescription dry cat food for years, never had a problem with it. A few months ago I opened a bag of c/d for my cat, Sammy, and he refused to eat it. He only wanted his brothers m/d formula. Since he was literally willing to starve himself to death, I left him eat the m/d. I ordered two large bags of m/d and the cats went through the first bag without a problem. I opened the second bag and my other cat, Joey, ate a few bites and stopped and then vomited. Sammy smelled it and refused to touch it. I smelled the food and it smelled the same to me as it usually does.

Later I tried feeding it to them again and they smelled it and just walked away. Sammy can be a finicky cat so I'm not to surprised. On the other hand, Joey is not a finicky cat, he will eat just about anything. My cats are smelling something in that food, that I can't smell, and they are repulsed by it. Just putting it out there, in case someone else is experiencing the same problem.

I switched to a different brand of food and they are both eating that with no problem. Also, my daughter was feeding her dog some kind of canned science diet food, not sure which one, and her dog was experiencing vomiting and diarrhea until she switched to a different brand of food. She had been feeding her dog the Science Diet for quite some time without any problem, then all of a sudden her dog started getting sick. Seems there might be some kind of quality control problem with this food. Now I'm stuck with a $45 bag of food. I wouldn't even donate to the shelter because I wouldn't want to make the shelter cats sick.

I have Rottweiler who has a hereditary hip problem. I started to notice she was walking funny when she was about 8 months old. So I gave it a couple of weeks before overreacting hoping that she had just bruised herself. Then we had a snowstorm which was her first and she had a ball jumping around in it. The next day though she could barely stand and she would cry out when she would get up. The next day I made an appointment with an animal hospital in my area which is as I learned highly respected. I assumed walking in that they would want to do surgery to correct any problem that might come up and at that point I was willing to do and spend whatever I had to so that my dog didn't have to live with the pain she had.

The vet looked her over and pulled in a certain way on her leg and I thought my dog was going to take the vet's face off. He stood up, smiled, and explained in great detail the hip problem and then said he wanted her on the Hill's Prescription Diet food for joint care. I was skeptical that a certain type of dog food was going to help so I asked about surgery. He said to start the diet and we will revisit in a month and see how she is.

Well to my surprise I saw a difference in her walk in two weeks. One month and she had no limp at all. It is now six months later and I haven't seen her limp once. There is no crying when she stands. Honestly if I didn't live the experience I would not believe it. She actually gets a little annoying now because she is always jumping up and down like a kangaroo. On top of all that I struggled when I first got her to find a food she would eat. That is also not a problem with the Hill's Prescription Diet food. Looking at some of the past reviews makes me wonder how there can be so many negative reviews. But this is my experience with the product so I guess I am lucky.

I just read these reviews because I was curious if other cats had been having issues with this product. Here's one more story to add to the testimonies: I've been feeding my cat the adult wet food chicken/liver formula since I adopted her 4 months ago. Soon after I got her she was throwing up 1-3 times per week. I thought this was usual for cats and that some cats just have sensitive stomachs. Then, she started demonstrating weird behaviors toward the food. She would sniff it and walk away, or try to bury it without eating, even after not having eaten all day. I finally read the ingredients and realized I had no idea what I was feeding my cat...

After four months of my cat vomiting and blatantly disliking the food, I finally switched to a different product--of which I can pronounce all the ingredients-- and I'm so glad I did. I feel guilty that it took me this long to investigate the Hill's product and switch foods. I'm also relieved I switched soon enough that my cat hasn't had any serious health consequences from it. This stuff is absolute crap. If you love your pet, stay away from it.

I fed my 2 cats Science Diet Canned food for years. In July 2016 I noticed a label changed on the can but didn't think too much of it. Then both cats started vomiting and had diarrhea. I took them off all food until things settled down and then started giving them canned pumpkin and gradually started them on their dry food again (Core Wellness).

After a couple weeks I tried the Science Diet canned food again (I made sure I got the OLD label). After 2-3 days they were both vomiting and had diarrhea again. I am no longer feeding them canned food of any kind and they have both been just fine. I can only ASSUME that it was the canned food that was making them sick since it affected both of them. Has anyone else had a similar experience with Science Diet canned cat food recently? If so, can you share your experience and if you've found another brand of canned cat food to give your cats?

I had my dog on Science Diet for over 4 years. 6-8 months ago, my dog started to not want to eat it anymore and my mom said that it stunk and she couldn't breathe around it (she has an allergy to molds). I did not take it seriously. Kept feeding my poor baby this expensive food, because for so many years, it was awesome food. After not wanting to eat more and more, and acting like she just didn't feel well, and episodes of throwing up, walking funny and several visits to the vet, and finally doing an ultrasound on my babies liver and gallbladder it has been discovered that her gallbladder has sludge.

I Googled information about what causes it, and I found an article that talks about mold and fungus in dog foods. Then my aunt told me about how dog food companies have started using cheaper reject potatoes with black spots of mold, that do not qualify for human consumption. I then Googled Science Diet, and it looks like they might have started using bad potatoes starting around November of 2015, because that's when numerous complaints started happening, and the correlation of my dog not wanting to eat it.

Before that, they used to have a 4 and 5 star rating. I feel cheated by trusting the brand with my dog's health, then seeing her so sick and miserable, and expensive line of medical care to get to the bottom of why she seemed to be getting worse. They should be sued for malpractice! I am including the treatment that my vet has suggested, just in case others can't afford ultrasound's or other expensive tests. 11 lb miniature poodle, diagnosis of gallbladder issues. 1 - 16mg ** (anti nausea) once a day, 1/4 tablet of ** (twice a day), 1 ML of ** drops (twice a day). The only thing she has started to eat for now is bread and non sweetened cereals.

My veterinarian told me Lexi was having these problems because of a cheap dry puppy food we were feeding her so she recommended Science Diet for a long term diet. I adopted my little dog a year ago and he was 11 pounds. They told me he should get down to about 10 pounds and a year later he was actually up to 14 so my vet told me that he absolutely needed to go on a diet and that I needed to get Science Diet metabolic for him to lose weight. I was excited to see him lose some weight and maybe become a little more active again. I am disabled so he does not get a whole lot of exercise but he is a great little lap dog and doesn't really seem to care, which was one of the reasons I decided he was the perfect dog for us. He did well on the small sample sized bag that we were given at that vet visit. His weigh in after the sample bag showed that he had lost 1 pound in 5 weeks and that was great.

I bought a new bag and he had been okay on it for several weeks but then all the sudden he started acting like the food was gross and he would not eat it. He would act very hungry, but then when I would try to feed him his normal meals twice a day he would smell it and back away and go lay down and sleep. He also started eating grass outside and when he got so hungry that he had to eat some he started throwing up on my bed at night because it was really bothering him. He then also had a very loose stool outside and his eyes have become very watery which never happened before. He has become really lethargic. The hair on his back is standing up all weird like he is in discomfort, and he is just not himself.

I was beginning to become really concerned for him and as it is a holiday weekend I was going to wait until Tuesday and then call my vet if he was still not eating, but I decided to come on and see if there were any reviews on this dog food because I have just never seen him act like this before. After reading all of these horrible stories I decided to try giving him a bowl of his old dog food to see if he would eat it. Well, surprise, surprise he got it all down and now is acting totally normal. There is something seriously wrong with this food if it is killing dogs and making them so sick that they are vomiting and becoming lethargic and listless. I feel sick to my stomach that I may have almost killed my dog trying to give him a dog food to lose weight when there was nothing else ever physically wrong with him and all I was doing was trying to help him and following my vet's directions.

Then Science Diet changed the look of the bags on all their products and his stools got very loose. So I brought him to the vet. They put him on prescription Science Diet intestinal food. MADE MY DOG SICK. If I could have given it no stars I would have. My 9 year old GSD was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease because of her recent blood work results (most likely due to the use of anti inflammatory meds), our vet recommended a low protein, low phosphorous diet. The only sign of kidney disease that we noticed was she was drinking more water. Otherwise no symptoms. I didn't want to change her food but felt I had no choice, had to do what is best for her, so I bought a bag of the Hills KD diet. Opened the bag and couldn't believe the strong odor, her current food that she had been eating for many years has no odor and she loves it. Vacuums her bowl. As bad as it smelled my dog still ate it when I gave her a little to try. So I started mixing 25% Hills to 75% her other food and within hours she vomited undigested food, happened again on day 2, and she was starting to lose her appetite which is very unusual for her.

My vet told me that these were signs of the later stages of kidney disease, and to give the food a little more time. On day 3 her stools started to get soft and yellow looking and her eyes started to get watery, and she was depressed. I decided that no way was this a coincidence and took her off the Hills BEFORE it got worse. All this with just a 25% of her food being Hills. It took a couple of days for her to get her appetite back, it has now been 5 days on her old food, and she is now back to herself, no vomiting, stools are normal, vacuums her bowl, her eyes are not watering, and she is back to her happy self. I find it an odd coincidence that these symptoms appeared as soon as I started feeding this food.

My wife and I have 2 dogs; an 11-year-old pug Roxy and a 5-year-old German Shepherd Bei Bei. I know I wrote a lot here, but after reading other people's comments and experience with Science Diet dog food, I couldn't sit back and not share our terrible experience we are currently dealing with. We hope someone will read this and the other comments as well, and not feed their beloved pets Science Diet, it will harm your pets!

Our pug, Roxy, became sick on Jan. 26, 2016 and was sleeping a lot, her tail down and had vomited a few times in 2 days. We decided to take Roxy to the vet to get checked out. Once at the vet they weighed her in at 18 lbs and after her check-up and blood work, they said she had some problems. The vet gave her some antibiotic medicine to take care of an infection. The vet also said she was going to need to be put on prescription Science Diet W/D because the tests showed she needed a diet high in fiber, low fats, etc. So with the advice of the vet we ended up purchasing the Science Diet about a day later. We started her on her antibiotic meds on the 26th and by the next day she was starting to show signs of improvement and by that following day she was getting back to normal.

So on the 29th we started to feed our pug Science Diet W/D and our German Shepherd adult Science Diet for dinner, and both dogs ate the food like it was Thanksgiving. The next day Roxy was showing huge improvements, energy, excitement, loved her walks, and being a happy pup. But then after 2 days of eating Science Diet, Roxy's eating started to slow down and by Feb. 3rd she was eating about a quarter of a cup of the dog food a day! By Feb. 5th she completely stop eating the Science Diet, in fact she would walk away as if I was giving her a bowl of vinegar. Around this time we started to notice our German Shepherd was eating a lot of grass, something she doesn't do unless she feels ill.

So then from Feb. 5th to yesterday the 10th, our Pug Roxy, wouldn't eat the Science Diet, not even when we left it in her doghouse overnight; she completely stopped eating. We started last night and this morning to hand feed Roxy some boiled chicken, but she would only eat 3 pieces of chicken which were the size of a quarter, and this was not good because Roxy loves chicken. With the few pieces of chicken last night, some egg and a couple of treats earlier in the week, that's all she's had to eat for 5 days! I took her to the vet today and she has lost 3 lbs, from 18lbs to 15lbs! Our pug that looked like a pug 2 weeks ago now looks like an emaciated dog! This has broken my wife and my heart to see our dog that less than 2 weeks ago was full of energy and now looks like an emaciated dog!

I took the Science Diet back to the vet, printed out comments from this site and others regarding Science Diet, and he reacted like, "SD is the best food in the world and there must be something else wrong with her." I asked how is it that she was ok with her old food, took the meds and started to recover, but shortly after giving her bowls of this Science Diet POISON food, she has got a lot worse than she was when I first brought her in? He had no comment and suggested I go to another vet and in fact he gave 2 business cards to other vets! I asked him "can I feed her something just so she can have some food?" He said "it wouldn't help in your dog's situation. Your dog is serious and she might not make it past Monday. She needs an IV, an incubator, and other medication from a more advanced hospital." I couldn't believe what I heard!

I took Roxy home and thank God for my wife, she was given a number to another vet from her co-worker. I called this other vet and he was concerned, but he suggested we try and feed her some Gerber chicken baby food and some "Ensure" dog formula. Tonight we rushed to the store and bought 6 bottles of baby food and a syringe to put the food in to force feed her if she wouldn't eat. When we got back we tried to feed her the baby food, but Roxy didn't want to eat the food at all. So using the syringe, I put the food into it and then put the syringe on the side of Roxy's mouth and she started eating it and loving it! She ended up eating one and a half jars of baby food PLUS a handful of fresh fish! This brought my wife and I to tears! This was the first time Roxy ate food, and a lot of food in days!

We know we are not out of the dark clouds yet and we're praying that tomorrow and the days after, we will see more and more improvements in Roxy and we pray she can live out the rest of her years as a happy little pug. We stopped our German Shepherd from eating that SD, and we pray we stopped her earlier enough that she will not have any long-term ill effects from that food. BUT as far as this poison called Science Diet is concerned, it is TERRIBLE and I wish I would have seen this site earlier! I wish this information was posted everywhere so other pet owners would be more aware of this dog food and the harm it does to our pets!

We were brought to tears and angered when we read what others said about what this dog food has done to other pet owners. It's horrible and sad! The positive reviews make me wish these pet owners would stop using this food, because it will catch up with their pets. Science Diet food needs to be taken off of the shelves and no longer sold or even given out!

The german shepherd still goes on walks with us, wrestles the husky, but of course is slowing down and showing some definite signs of age. Looking for a good quality food that may give him better quality of life in his last year or 2, AND looking for something the husky would remain healthy on, I slowly transitioned from the grocery store better brand to the Hill's Science Diet for dogs aged 1-6, ingredients looked decent.

I didn't think I'd nearly kill the older dog. They have enjoyed the taste, and were on full Science Diet after about a 9-day transition. Just a couple days after, the older dog had severe diarrhea, then apparent stomach cramping as he'd squat with very little output. Thinking it would pass, we just took an extra couple walks that day and gave plenty of water. He seemed to act pretty normal but was eager to be out and "try" to go. The husky was normal. Of course this was on a weekend, and it turned into 2 days of this till I could get him to the vet. They diagnosed some bacterial imbalance and infection and sold us 3 Rx, the german shepherd seemed to be improving almost immediately. The husky seemed to be a little more gassy (as mentioned as I see in others' reviews).

2 days after that the Husky had EXTREME diarrhea, acted lethargic, withdrawn. What is in this stuff!? What are we paying for?! The vet suggested treating the husky with all the same Rx as the older dog. My mistake obviously for trying to use the same food for both dogs...? But then after reading about some similar concerns, I do wonder what in the world is going on here. Guess we'll go back to the cheap stuff, predictable poops and (hopefully!!) happy pups...

Take the time to read all of the reviews. Don't take chances with your pet. My dog has been very ill and on antibiotics for 7 weeks now after eating this rat infested food. I don't need to go into any details just look at the prior review I wrote and the picture of the rat. I have contacted the FDA and filled out a report with great detail. This is what everyone must do in order to get some action taken against this company. The company does not care about your pet. They showed this by sending me the coupons. Not one person in management has tried to contact me about this issue. I think finding a rat in the food speaks for itself. Yes things happen but when no one cares it continues to get worse.

Look at the picture of the rat again. I see not only a dead rat but a very sick dead rat. Let's just hope that no one in my family comes up with some kind of rat borne disease and that my dog lives. I have attached the rat picture again. This is not for the squeamish. Which I am so you can just imagine how loud I screamed when I found the rat in the food. It still gives me nightmares.

My two senior dogs have been on Science Diet since I got them over 9 years ago. About 2 months ago we bought a bag of Mature Small bites. The food was larger than usual and my husband even questioned if we had grabbed a bag of regular. We double-checked the bag and it was in fact small bites. At the time we didn't think much of it. About a month ago, one of our dogs, Fudge, had to undergo surgery for fatty masses. He had a full blood work-up because of his age and he was deemed healthy and good for surgery. Immediately after the surgery he was doing great until about a week had passed. He stopped eating, started vomiting and had diarrhea. The Dr's thought he was having a reaction to one of the meds and it was causing an ulcer. They ran blood tests and he had become diabetic and was in renal failure.

After two days, and thousands of dollars, in the pet ICU, Drs were unable to save him and we had to put him down. Right around the same time one of our other dogs, Bella, started to exhibit some of the same symptoms. She started drinking tons of water, vomiting and pacing as if she was in pain or uncomfortable. We immediately took her to the vet the day after Fudge passed away. The vet said she now had diabetes and pancreatitis. She is now on two shots of insulin a day and a special diet. We also have a puppy who is perfectly healthy and ate all the same treats as our older dogs, so the vet said he believes it to be the dog food as that was the only thing our two senior dogs ate that our puppy did not.

The vet also said that for two dogs who are not genetically linked to come down with the same symptoms/illnesses at the same time is not coincidence and, again, deduced to the dog food. He even called Hill's himself and spoke to one of their vets and started a claim. He was told we would be contacted for additional info, which we never were. The vets office tried to follow up with Hill's and they said that haven't received any other complaints and would not look into it any further. Unacceptable!!! We have since taken all of our dogs and cats off all Hill's products and would not recommend anyone trust their loved one's health with these products.

The first day they had the C/D exclusively the older female became lethargic and whiny, has diarrhea, and threw up five times before 1PM. The younger male cat couldn't stop eating it, and he already has a mild weight problem. I have never liked Science Diet because I felt it wasn't very good quality, but I didn't expect it to do this. I'm looking for a new food.

She tells me Science Diet is very good because they keep their ingredients consistent, unlike most other brands. My dogs have a lot of energy, are fit and trim and very happy.

I am an 80 year old widow who has always had a cat in my home. My last cat, a stray, lived 19 years and died of old age. This is just to say that I take good care of my pet. In July, 2015, I adopted a 10 year old rescue cat from the Dumb Friends League. She was a wonderful animal and found to be "in excellent health", except from being overweight, by DFL. Two months after bring her home, I opened a new bag of Science Diet Light and gave her 1/4 cup. She almost immediately vomited it up and refused to eat. I let it go for a few days while continuing to offer her food. It soon became apparent that she needed medical help. She was lethargic, continued to, refuse food and became clingy.

The next week she saw the vet three times and spent one day in the hospital on nausea medications and an IV. The doctor had explained pancreatitis to me but I didn't want to believe she was that sick. In less than one week, she had to be put down. Such a previously healthy, active and people-oriented, loving animal had to die (be murdered) unnecessarily and for no other reason than Hill's Science Diet had dropped the ball in quality control of a product that people like me depended upon and trusted to feed their beloved pets. This is a firm that touts itself as better because its product is "made in the USA" when it is no better than China in selling poison indiscriminately to us.

Few weeks ago my brother brought home this food for my little overweight dog. First day loved it but after he wouldn't eat tried mixing with other food but still wouldn't eat. He started hiding the food and going through trash which he had NEVER done before looking for any food. The week after starting he had dropped close to ten pounds even after we began to feed him other dry food mixing in wet food. Currently 10/7/15 he is underweight, shaky, very tired, and has lost control of his bladder.

In the 5 years we have owned him he has never been one to pee in the house but he is having MULTIPLE accidents in the house now. He has lost all interest in food until we bought the Rachael Ray zero grain due to the first ingredient being Lamb then chicken and mixing it with wet canned food with minimal additives. Have made a vet appointment for him in a couple of days. Hoping for the best as he seems to be eating slightly more on this new food. Will update.

Our Beloved Havanese Daisy was only 5 years old and she was dealing with bladder stones. They never seemed to bother her and I never would have noticed she was having an issue until I was watching her urinating frequently and had had a few accidents in the house so the Vet put her on the Hills C/D canned dog food, to hopefully dissolve the stones and avoid surgery. So we bought a case and she loved the dog food and actually begged for it (which she never did before). Well after 11 cans (1 can a day) we woke up to find she had vomited all through the house, after being so playful and energetic the day before that we actually thought the food was working. We hoped that this was something that would pass and waited the day to see how she was.

She did drink some water and was still urinating so we were hoping this would pass. The next day she wasn't any better so we brought her to the vet. They put her on IV for the day and did an x-ray which didn't show much and gave us another food to try in the morning. The next morning she wasn't any better. We brought her back and they thought she may have an obstruction and needed surgery. When they opened her up they discovered her pancreas was no longer functioning. There was nothing they could do and they had to euthanize her. Needless to say we were absolutely heartbroken as well as our 12 & 10 year-old girls who adored this dog and she adored them.

This was something that could have been avoided had we and the vet researched this dog food. One of the causes of Acute Pancreatitis is a high fat low protein diet which is exactly what that dog food is. It had more fat in it than any other kind of dog food we fed her, but we had faith our vet knew what they were doing. This dog food is full of chemicals that can kill humans: **. Our beloved Daisy had no issues except for bladder stones and was perfectly fine until she started this dog food and after 11 days she was dead!

This company needs to be stopped and stop killing our beloved pets. After bringing this to our vet's attention they supposedly talked to the vet from the company and were kind enough to wipe our bill clean which I'm sure means they know more than they were admitting. But that doesn't bring our dog back, and I am sure no vet is going to admit their dog food kills dogs. We are heartbroken because we had the best dog and now she is no longer with us but we don't want anyone else to go through this either.

We have been using the Science Diet food ID canned for our dogs. About a month ago the dog wanted nothing to do with the food. I smelled it and it didn't smell right to me. I opened up another can and it was somewhat better. My dog would only eat half of it. He is NOT a fishy eater. He has eaten less and less for a couple of weeks now. He was 26 lbs. and is now 21. I took him to the vet who did a thorough exam and extensive blood work and could find nothing wrong. I knew I had to do something, the dog was crying from being hungry. I mixed up some chicken and rice and he ate right away. This makes me believe that either something has changed in the Science Diet formula or the dog will no longer eat it because some of it was bad. This dog has always been a good eater and never been picky. He has gotten lethargic. Has anyone else had a problem similar to this with this food??? Help?

We got two puppies about a year ago. The lab had constant diarrhea. Explosive. Not pleasant when you are trying to house train when she couldn't control it. We tried adding rice, pumpkin, etc. Things would be better, but not great. And rice has no nutritional content. Tried medication to no avail. We tried Blue varieties. No grain varieties. Nothing worked consistently or well. And her poop reeked. You could always tell her poop from the others because of the smell and the consistency.

Our vet finally suggested Science Diet ID. Within 2 days her poop was perfectly formed. Perfect consistency. Looked like plastic because of how perfect it looked. She had always had reddish eyes and thought that was just her. But after the food, that improved too. I do also give the wet food mixed in because the other puppy prefers softer food. So they both get a little of that mixed in. They have been on it for about 3-4 months now and no medical problems that I know of. I think because the poop looks perfect and based on the vet stating that science diet is the perfect nutrition that we didn't even need to taper off the old, for her that it really is the perfect nutrition. Problem is that is expensive and two feed the two of them is a lot of money every month. I can't take one off because the husky is picky and if she decides to not eat, then the lab will swoop or sneak in and eat whatever is left.

On the second day after starting the new formula W/D, my little guy began having diarrhea, vomiting, and severe swelling in his abdomen and backside (his sphincter went from 1/2 inch to over 2 inches in diameter). I called the vet in the middle of the night, but he asked to wait until Sunday afternoon. When he saw my baby, he immediate admitted him. He diagnosed him with a mass in his abdomen, so I expected the worst. I brought him home on Wed. so he could die at home. But I also started research and learned our experience was the same as others.

I started feeding him pumpkin, chicken, eggs, and some raw veggies. Thur. I called the vet and said I would bring him in to be put down, as he was so miserable. Friday morning, however, he had perked up and kept improving. Within a week of chicken and veggies, then changing to Fresh Pet a week later, he was back to himself and has continued to improve. He's better now than he's been before the diabetes set in. I got credit for the cans of W/D wet food, but was not given a refund for the dry food because it was open. I will never use any diet or prescription food again. BTW, all my dogs eat raw veggies for snacks (baby carrots, pepper slices, even green beans). Oh and no more "mass" in his abdomen.

I am writing this so that no one suffers such a tragedy. My daughters beloved 7 perfectly healthy yr. old Lab, Shadow died yesterday. She was having to travel for work and left him with me. My vet changed my dogs’ food to Science Diet KD on July 24 and right away I noticed that all 3 had mucus, black diarrhea within 2 days. All three begin to eat grass and had unquenchable thirst and frequent urination and watery eyes and lethargic. I called the vet and asked if this was normal and they assured me that it was. I was bringing Shadow back to his mommy on August 8, and noticed that Shadow was very antsy and I kept having to stop to let him urinate and his thirst was out of control. In fact, my 8 yr. old long haired Chihuahua, Babis who had never in 8 years had wanted to take a drink on any of our trips was acting the same way.

I called my daughter and told her that I felt something was wrong. The morning after we arrived, I went to let the dogs out to urinate and Shadow, who had never ever had an accident, lost control of his bladder. We immediately made an appointment and were told that they thought he had Cushings. On Sunday the 10th, I noticed something wrong on left eye. His pupil was dilated. We took him back on 11th and were sent to a specialist. He thought Shadow had a tumor on the back of the eye. After X-rays, they found no tumor. He lost sight in that eye and 3 days later, his right eye did the same. He was losing control of his bladder and then developed drop jaw, couldn't drink nor eat and begin to make horrific breathing sounds and was bleeding out of his mouth.

My daughter was staying up all night with him and was taking to the vet almost every day. She finally opted to take him to Kstate Medical School of Vets last Monday where they ran an MRI. They said they thought he had a mass on his brain that was affecting his eyesight, causing him to be lethargic, eat. They told us they really had no explanation to what was happening to him. They gave us some rigged up tape harnesses to help him eat and drink. We brought him home that evening and tried to give water and dog food soup to no avail. I went and bought a turkey baster and proceeded to stay up all night trying to hydrate him in any way possible. He threw up all night and kept bleeding every time that I gave him water.

The next morning by 7 am, we were back at the vet. They gave him Cerenia for nausea, that was supposed to last 24 hrs. and some under the skin IV. The vet said she was really concerned about his breathing and his organs and then proceeded to tell us that we were in hospice mode and to make him as comfortable as possible because she felt that his kidneys were shutting down! We brought him home and felt like we were witnessing a comeback. He drank and was able to keep it down and even slept, which he hadn't been able to do since this all began. By 8 that evening, we could see signs that the anti-nausea meds were wearing off because the unquenchable thirst and throwing up were back. Needless to say, we were up all night again with the same horrifying things.

At 6 am, we gave him water for the last time and he stumbled horribly and lost control of his bladder. At that point, my courageous daughter made the choice to have her truly beloved Shadow euthanized. We couldn't stand to see this beautiful creature hurt anymore. We are devastated. Has anyone else's pets gone through this??? This is horrible and nobody else should have to go through this. Now, we are concerned about Babis because he is showing some of the same signs.

One evening I came home and he threw up pieces of the dry food and a bunch of mucus. This happened twice, so I kept feeding it to him. Now I noticed he is gagging after eating. I bought it at the end of June and by the first week of July she had finished all of the old bag and was now completely on the new bag. She was at the vet by July 13th. She's been on this food for over a year with no problems. I mentioned the differences in the new bag but was told (as far as they knew) only the packaging had changed. After a blood test, the vet confirmed that she had pancreatitis. Besides being a little overweight, she hadn't had any other health problems before that. She had an antibiotic shot and was put on antibiotic pills.

Today makes the 7th day on the pills. She was really improving and I thought we were in the clear until yesterday I noticed that she felt warm again. The only thing that changed was I started to give her some of the dry food again. I wish I hadn't thrown the bag away, but I really didn't think her symptoms could be caused by a food she had been on for so long. I won't be giving her any of it ever again. So between wasting the $62 on the food I'll be throwing away and a large vet bill, I am furious. My 10 year old cat has eaten this "top of the line" food for the past 9 years of her life that we have had her. I never had any reason to switch her because why fix what's not broken, right!! She always had perfect checkups at her annuals. November of 2014 I noticed she was snubbing her food when I fed her (dry diet) I found unusual so I returned to the store and bought a fresh bag.. Same result!! After thinking about this in depth I realized her coat was not as shiny (solid black) as before and she seemed to lie around a lot more and drink less water. She is an indoor cat with all shots to date and we DO NOT miss annual checkups.. Also I do not feed table scraps, treats, etc..

I returned to the pet store and shared my concern and it was confirmed that Science Diet has had a lot of returns in the past few months. I immediately decided on a switch to a different brand. The results were amazing!! She is like the one year old kitten we brought home years ago. Her coat is amazing, her personality is back and she is not as irritable with the dog anymore.. Well OK on occasion. :) Sadly I think the standards of SD is no longer the "top of the line" cat/dog food we all grew to trust our pets health/longevity to!! Sadly others have lost their pets due to whatever is going on here.. If you are still feeding this food to your pet then you are reading this out of concern and need to research other alternatives for their diet.. Remember they depend on YOU!!

I have been feeding Science Diet to ALL my animals (who are all rescues) since I've had them from puppies/kittens and all have been great on this diet. Most of the reviews I've read have left out pertinent information, like whether or not their animals are chewers or get fed table scrap, and that is a red flag for me to see they are willing to blame a diet instead of taking blame for their lack of supervision. True, not every animal will react to food the same way, but some of these claims are just ridiculous, to say the least.

I have fed Science Diet to my pets for years, exclusively Science Diet. Last dec I found my 10 1/2 year old cat started throwing up undigested food. We fed Science Diet hairball for years. I later noticed in dec/Jan Jaundice at my kitty's gumline, decreased intake and further vomiting of bile. Jaundice progressed, severe wt. loss, and finally death... Broke my heart. I am a E.R. nurse and knew there was nothing to be done, so I made him comfortable... I also have a Siamese 8 yrs old who has also started vomiting undigested food for the past week same as my kitty I lost, and now have a new kitty.. All are indoors, never ever outside.

I feed only Science Diet wet 1/2 can between the 2 cats in a.m. and 1/2 hairball and 1/2 optimal care dry for 2 months, before hairball formula only... Something is going on with the Science Diet food. I am going today to find a different brand. I will not take a risk after reading from other blogs the same vomiting S/S... So sad, I have trusted this brand for years.. and I am saving this food in case something comes up. Too many pet owners are having the same S/S to ignore the possibility of a problem.

My pets grew up being fed science diet and actually thrived on it. I don't know but I think they must of changed their formulation last year? Around October first my cat and then my dog started vomiting. I thought it was hairball issues with my kitty but then she had her breasts swell and skin issues. Our little dog started having problems as well. I then thought maybe allergies and consulted with our vet. I changed our flea prevention because that might of been caused by it. The vomiting started happening to both pets just a little at first then large clumps of food and yellow foam. I immediately went online to see if food recall was made and there wasn't any of the types of food they were on. Then I saw countless reviews on here and all were having similar symptoms.

I immediately did some research on the ingredients within science diet, realized it isn't quality food in the formula they have now. Corn isn't the best product for your pet. I changed both to a new food Simply Nourish and the vomiting stopped. My kitty started acting like a kitten, she had so much energy. Her and our little dog's fur and skin issues cleared up. Our little dog though still seemed sickly. We took him to the vet and they treated him with antibiotics for ear issues and said that might of also had a stroke. He also subsequently started having seizures. He never recovered. I know he was old and older pets can have such things. The food might not of caused that but I do believe that it contributed to his downward spiral because of not getting proper nutrition.

Our cat is thriving and healthier than I have seen her in a long time on Simply Nourish which by the way doesn't have corn but instead has real meat, real Vegetables etc. It only cost maybe a dollar more than Science Diet and on sale is less than Science Diet. Just read the ingredients on the food you choose and don't go by what is promoted by those getting kickbacks. You might save the life of your fur baby. I wish I would of done something sooner.

Hill's Science Diet ID Lowfat GI Restore - This food was ordered from Chewy.com Jan 2015. I was told it was shipped directly from Hill's as they just started supplying this food to their customers. Not sure at this point who to believe but none the less I rec' it with an expiration date of June 2013. The bag looked new and the dates were somewhat faded so honestly I did not notice. My Yorkshire terrier who had been recovering nicely for almost a year from a benign stomach tumor began having bouts of diarrhea, nausea and anorexia. I would get her to eat by giving her canned Purina EN which would seem to help but them w/in a few days after returning her to ID it would start again.

After a complete Ultrasound and extensive tests we were all baffled. I kept checking for recalls to see if possible it was her food but saw none. Finally decided to look at the best by date to further research and made startling discovery. When contacting Chewy they overnighted a new bag and apologized. WHAT??? I am concerned that there is an issue with this new bag. After reading all the very negative reviews, I intend to return the remainder of the bag (90%) back to the vet who gives a 100% return. After visiting the vet with our miniature schnauzer my wife told me it was put on a Hill's Prescription Dog Food. Turns out the stuff cost around $3.00 per can. The dog loved it and all was well, after all it was a "prescription". When we relocated to Florida my wife had the vet transfer the "prescription" to Florida. She said they would "fax it down" so we'd be able to buy it at a vet near us there. This food was costing us around $1200 per year so I began investigating and found that the "prescription" in Hill's Prescription Diet Dog Food is a trademark, not "prescribed" by a vet. Further, because of a cozy deal with vets Hill's sell the dog food at a premium and vets mislead consumers using the word "prescription". To make a long story short, we looked up online what our dog should have in their diet and ended up getting the food at a pet store. Our dog is flourishing on the new food and loves it also, we're just not getting misled by our vet and ripped off any more.

I really liked my vet until he tried to tell me that my dalmatian needed a prescription diet. I mean, come on, the term Prescription Diet convinces pet owners that it is medicinal and therefore necessary for their animal's survival. After much research I found out the truths about a number of things concerning dog foods. But most importantly there are NO ingredients in this food that require a prescription. The term "Prescription Diet" is a marketing term ONLY. VERY DECEPTIVE!!!

The sad truth is that there are no regulations on dog food. They can put whatever they want into the bag and it is heart-wrenching because they do. My vet insisted that my baby boy eat Hills Prescription UD diet for stone forming prevention. He neglected to tell me that he makes quite a bit of money by prescribing AND selling the sub-par food. I thought it was kinda suspicious that it's the only food that most vets sell at their office. The ingredients in this food are absolutely horrifying. There is NO meat (meat by-products is not meat)...none...in the one he prescribed for my boy. He continued to tell me that Corn is GOOD for dogs. I lost every ounce of respect for him at that moment (2 of the ingredients are known to cause problems for Dalmatians).

Please please please read the ingredients in your dog food and PLEASE do the research on each individual item. It will only take a few minutes of your time and your furry baby deserves that. The first 5 items in the ingredient list make up the majority of the food, 1st item being the most important and so on... You will be so angry at yourself for feeding this crap to your beloved pet. Hills marketing is ingenious plus HILLS donates large amounts of money to Vet Schools, gives grants and even pursues future vets while they are still in school, convincing them to get on board when they begin their practice.

All I can say is shame on any Vet that tells a pet owner to feed their precious dog or cat this horrible food, mostly meatless food. Dogs are carnivorous for Pete's sake...You've never heard of a dog raiding a corn field. And by all means DO NOT CALL HILLS FOR INFORMATION. Consult an unbiased Vet nutritionist...You'll be glad you did. Make your own food if you can. It's cheaper than Hills PD, and so much better for them. I am only writing this because I feel I need to share what I have discovered. I vowed to tell anyone I could so they can learn as I have. Good luck!!

My dog was on another food which caused her to become extremely ill 5 months ago. After 1 1/2 months of chicken and rice and too many tests to list my vet prescribed her Hills WD canned and or dry food due to tests showing she requires a diet high in fiber and low fat. She seemed to tolerate the canned food ok. Last night I purchased a bag of the dry WD. I added a small amount to her canned food and no issues. This morning she was given just the dry food, then again for her afternoon feeding.

What I immediately noticed is that she did not eat all the food from her afternoon feeding. HUGE RED FLAG, as she had been given 1 1/2 cup. Her am feeding was 2 cups. She did eat all that. However, within an hour of eating her afternoon food, she vomited twice. This is EXACTLY how many, many dogs are reacting to foods with dangerous ingredients. Refusal to eat, then if they do eat it they vomit it up or have diarrhea. The first pile of vomit appeared to be her entire amount of her am feeding and was only partially digested. The second vomit was clearly what she had just ate and was not digested at all. I am scared to death to feed her even 1 kibble. What is wrong with this food? What is wrong with you Science Diet???

I looked at the ingredients just now and the VERY 1st ingredient is whole grain corn, #2 is POWDERED CELLULOSE (a fiber source in dry dog food with the LOWEST food value of ANY kind of fiber). 3rd ingredient is chicken by-product meal, (the pieces and parts of chicken that isn't fit for human consumption: include the lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, livers, blood, bone, stomachs, and intestines of meat animals, and the necks, feet, undeveloped eggs, and intestines from poultry). #4 is Corn Gluten Meal and the list goes on. Fillers and other ingredients that are no good for our pets. This is supposed to be high quality prescription food, which is costly to buy, the vet recommends it; and now the ingredients are extremely questionable. This is prescription food, for dogs that need to be on a special diet due to illness, and permanent health issues. What is wrong with this picture?

I have religiously used Science Diet for many years for my poodles. They are quite small and my best friends. Last year, I lost two within six months of each other. Sammy, the older one, had lost nearly all of her teeth in spite of having been fed only Science Diet all her life. She also developed frequent boil-like infections near her anal area that would become extremely painful for her, and resulted in our having to put her in epsom salt baths several times a day. She also suffered terrible bouts of diarrhea and vomiting. We would switch to rice and chick broth with scrambled eggs and she would recover almost immediately.

Sammy developed very large tumors all over her little body, which eventually invaded her chest cavity and made it very difficult for her to breathe. We lost her. Just six months prior to that, her little sister Trouble developed vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy, and then her back legs stopped working all together. She could no longer control her urination, and she also had begun to develop difficulty breathing.

Three months later, we bought a new puppy, another poodle, Abby, whom we've fed nothing but Science Diet. Abby has recently begun having the same bouts of vomiting and diarrhea with bright yellow bile, and undigested pellets of Science Diet. She has been defecating more than any dog of her size should, having to get up in the middle of the night every night to go out, and has begun to have bouts of demonic behavior. Abby is now 1 1/2 years old and in spite of having multiple chew toys, balls, and other toys, has begun chewing the feet of my antique furniture. She barks and aggressively attacks the TV, often bites at my husband and I, and suddenly is exhibiting very poor manners and behaviors.

My daughter told me about Science Diet being placed on the "do not feed" lists of many vets, so I finally decided to check for others having issues with the food and their pets. I am positively SHOCKED by what I have seen and read here. I am further considering contacting an attorney to suggest a class action law suit against Science Diet for the millions of dollars in vet bills created by their product, as well as the millions of dollars paid for pets that died as a result of their clearly tainted or poisoned pet food, and the unimaginable pain and suffering from the broken hearts of pet owners who have lost their pets. I will never again purchase Science Diet, and feel they have misled me for years telling me their extremely expensive pet food was the best thing for my babies.

SHAME ON YOU SCIENCE DIET! Have you no soul? How could you put the health and lives of defenseless creatures who give such unconditional devotion, love, and affection to millions of people ever minute of every day! I am truly sickened by the thought that through my desire to give my pets the best, I may have caused two of their early deaths, and the third, early signs of illness. I hope a lawsuit is filed, my name will be top on the list of what appears to be thousands of litigants.

Stay indoors... Never leave food sitting out... instead they eat 3 small meals a day. We always feed them the best & about 6 months ago we transitioned to Science Diet (Adult indoor 1-6) because the vet "recommends" it. My cats were all healthy & active before this. Science Diet destroyed their quality of life. 2 of our cats developed serious problems with the pancreas... the female is now on steroids & B12 shots the rest of her life, & the male can no longer digest kibble & has to eat wet food the rest of his life. Then our 2 other males who are only 2 years old also developed issues... one has chronic diarrhea & the other a severe skin problem. Last but not least a little boy we just rescued, he was perfectly healthy when he was astray... But after starting on Science Diet he now has struvite crystals. These were all PERFECTLY HEALTHY cats. I adopted Tippy from the Dumb Friends League in Denver on 8/22/2013. I ask what kind of food should I feed him. I was told we feed them Science Diet, you can buy it in the store. I did. after I had Tippy about 6 weeks, feeding him only Science diet small and toy breed. One day on our walk, Tippy pooped and when he tried to get back into a walking position, he could not. His paws were actually turned out. He was wobbling and could not catch his balance. He had trouble trying to walk. I picked him up and carried him home, sat him down. He just tumbled over, his eyes were blinking as if he was nodding off. He tried standing and his leg would fold under him. I called the Dumb Friends League and was told I should take him to a vet, since I had had him over a month. They would only look at him If I was surrendering him.

I call three vets, described Tippy's symptoms and was told they would not diagnose over the phone and of course would not see him without paying upfront (I am a senior. My only income is social security, paid the first of the month and Tippy is a therapeutic dog, recommended by my Doctor). So of course I had no money. One vet and a girlfriend ask if Tippy could have gotten into anti-freeze. I knew he had not and just thought I would Pray and wait it out. Tippy finally vomited and immediately he was ok. His vomit was lumpy, curry-yellow colored.

About 2 months after that it happen again. He would heave so hard, his whole little body wracking. After he vomited again he was ok. I examined his vomit again, lumpy & yellow. I knew his stools were brown, like his food. He had no diarrhea, etc. So I thought, well, I'm not sure what I thought. This continued on about every 2 months or so. Still he would vomit, I'd examine it same lumpy, same yellow. Finally in September he started vomiting at least twice a week. In October I noticed the vomit was now more of a mass and could clearly see whole pellets, not mixed, just in the food. I started to think it might be the food. That this was the Science Diet food causing this had not entered my mind.. The fact that his stools was brown, the color of his food, had no diarrhea and the number one thing.. This food was being used and was recommended by the Dumb Friends League and each container or any ad for Science Diet read "U.S. Veterinarians' # 1 choice to feed their own pets" also Hills Science Diet veterinarian recommended. So it had to be something I was doing.

I went out of town the first week of October, left Tippy with my girlfriend since I had a half bag of food (Advanced fitness 8183 PT305727 BEST BEFORE 02/2016 R0950344tk190). I brought another bag for her to feed him. It was (small &toy breed 9096PT305730 BEST BEFORE 12 2015 MO 112122MC 120). I do not have any receipts. When I came back feed him out of both bags, whichever my hands touched was the one I used. I did not ask my friend if he vomited or not. She did say the last day he was there he would not eat. Occasionally he will miss a day without eating, so I was not too concerned, the first two days he would just nibble, so I started mixing his food with canned pumpkin or peanut butter. He started eating again. He also started vomiting again. Then I saw the whole pellets in his vomit, not mixed in the now mass-like vomit, just there on top. This stuff is no longer lumpy, I thought perhaps it was not being digested. I emailed Hills, explained the symptoms and asked if perhaps I was doing something wrong and ask them to advise me, and that I would not used this food until I heard from them.

The next day I got a 8 to 10 page questionnaire that was purely a marketing item. It did not address any of my questions, issues at all. The letter also said I would be getting coupons in a day or two. I did get two 10 dollar off coupons, the food cost 12.90 a bag so what a savings, huh. I did decide I would use up the two remaining bags, buy two more bags with the coupon and then start using IAMS, but starting this past Thursday up until Sunday, Tippy vomited every day.. Finally Sunday morning I went online, googled "reviews and complaints about Science Diets".

As I continued reading and saw that cats and dogs have died, gotten sick, have permanent health problems that can be linked to Science Diet and all or most had the same symptoms, vomiting, lethargic, excessive drinking water and real stinky breath. I was horrified, then scared, and finally I am angry and disgusted that I put my dog baby's health and life at risk because I listened to Dumb Friends League and believed "U.S Veterinarians #1 choice to feed their own pets". I had a rottweiler that lived to be 8 years old. I only fed him Iams. The only reason I used Science Diet was because it was recommended. Every vet who recommends this garbage, because I'm sure they are getting paid should be ashamed. and realize what they are causing, doing our pets great harm, even their lives.

I've been feeding my cat the prescription Hill's k/d in chicken and fish flavors for about a year. I've been very happy with it prior to now, and I buy it from the vet by the case. I just started the first can from a new case of CHICKEN. Within a few hours of the first serving, my cat vomited a little bit. About 12 hours later I gave her a second serving, and she was vomiting within a few minutes and could not keep this food down. I believe there is something wrong with this batch and want to warn others. From a different can from the same case: Best before 11 2016. T0330057A 9453. Our rat terrier changed to the adult 1-6 from the puppy (and yes, we gradually introduced it to her) she threw up 5 times, after each time we fed her (which is 1/4 cup a.m. and 1/4 cup p.m.). She convulsed the 2nd night and I laid with her all night.

The 2nd day she refused to eat it but got hungry later and ate it. Became ill shortly after that throwing up. The 3rd day again she refused to eat it, got hungry, ate some later and had horrible diarrhea. We decided to put her on the Science Diet can food since we had no other food in the house for her and her stool returned to normal. This food is extremely strong smelling. I feel it is tainted and should be recalled. The SKU is 9096 (your recall is 9097 - the larger bag). The best before date is 08 2014 M2711509 SL 028. I think it's a coincidence that the SKU's are off by one number and both are for Adult Small & Toy Breed.

TO THE PUBLIC! Please be aware of the smaller bags that are probably tainted. If your dog or cat refuses to eat the food, gets diarrhea or vomits take that as a sign there is something wrong with the food. Last year my cats began to vomit after eating the food. I went online and began to research and found I was not the only one having this issue. I stopped feeding them Science Diet for a while, but they didn't seem to like any other food. So I purchased a new bag of Science Diet and all was fine. I thought okay, it must have just been a bad batch. Recently they have started to refuse the Science Diet food again! They flat out refused for an entire 24 hours! They eventually began eating, not even 5 minutes later all 3 cats began to vomit!!!

I called the vet and he assured me there was no recall on the food to his knowledge and advised me to feed them another brand canned food or regular human baby food (chicken). The vet seemed to think they might have gotten into something they weren't supposed to. I began feeding them canned Friskies and they ate it completely fine! I fed that to them a couple of days to let their stomachs rest per vet's orders. When I resumed feeding them Science Diet, again, they immediately began to vomit! I believe there is something wrong with this batch of food (purchased 9/7/14 in Quakertown, PA)! I do not have the best by date as we did not keep the packaging. I have contacted Science Diet and am still waiting on a response. In the meantime I think I'm done with this cat food for good.

I have a 5-1/2 year old Papillon dog (born Nov 2008) who was diagnosed with multiple allergies when 1 year old and put on Hill’s Science Diet ZD Ultra dog food and allergy treatments. The beginning of June 2014 he stopped eating. At first I thought it was his usual slow down on eating due to the summer heat. But then it went on for a week, and wasn't pooping and drinking water like crazy. Vet found his colon full and cleaned him out thinking that was the problem. Several days later, still not eating. They did a barium follow through and found swelling in a part of his bowel and liver looking strange. Sent him to OSU vet hospital for an ultrasound and scope. Found his liver discolored and strange coloring in the small bowel. Our vet performed surgery to biopsy the small bowel & liver. Ended up removing 20% of his liver which was dead and said the rest of the liver looked like cirrhosis. Also had an infection in the folds of the small bowel.

They thought it was cancer but was not. Gave him about 3 months to live. Started him on several liver supporting meds and tried to get him to eat. Tried Science Diet A/D - wouldn't eat. Tried Science Diet L/D - still wouldn't eat. At this point he had lost 5 pounds (30% of his total weight - was not over weight to begin with). In the second week of August we stopped all Science Diet food and started feeding him fresh cooked chicken breast. He started eating and within a week has gained 6oz. and his liver panel tests started looking better. Went to a dog food store that specializes in grain free, chemical free dog food. Met the owner and he told me horror stories about Science Diet and illnesses. Started adding some of dog food they recommended to the chicken and he ate it (previously tried mixing the Science Diet foods with the chicken and he picked it out & left it). Now slowly changing him over to the new food. Just wondering how many others have had the same issue and if there is any proof against Science Diet and if any lawsuits have been issued to Hill’s Science Diet.

At the beginning of January, I switched my 11-year-old Pomeranian's food. He started to act sluggish and stopped wanting to eat his food; yet he was hungry for anything else. I thought he was just begging more than usual so I continued to make him try his new food. He started to have slight diarrhea and then was shaking one night. I stayed up with him and took him to the vet in the morning. I couldn't think of what could have happened to my energetic and healthy dog. Then the adventure began:

The initial visit to my vet revealed elevated liver enzymes. I opted to take him for an ultrasound. The night before the ultrasound, I thought about the situation and Googled, "Science Diet and illness". I found this forum and others and started to feel awful. I had been feeding my dog something that was making him sick and he had even tried to let me know. Thankfully I am in Columbus and had the best experience at OSU Veterinary Medical Center. We spent a lot of time trying to find out why my dog was sick. He started to get low platelets in addition to the high liver enzymes.

I brought up the Science Diet question and they couldn't conclude that's what it could have been. We tested him on about everything under the sun. He eventually got better and $1800+ later, we were back to healthy. I spent the last half of January afraid for my dog's life, taking time off work, and wondering how I was going to continue to pay his bills if he didn't get better (I would have done it regardless).

Conclusion: there was no definitive reason why his liver enzymes increased. The doctors were stumped and it became a case that everyone was looking into because it was odd. The Metronidazole that my vet gave him on the initial visit might have been the cause of his low platelets. I was lucky to have a team on his case and the students found those rare case studies. When he stopped that medicine, his levels came back to normal; but again, can't say for sure.

What I can say is that I saved some of the Science Diet food and if there is ever a law suit, I will be right there with everyone. I have been meaning to write something on this forum and think about it occasionally. Without reading these other cases, I wouldn't have thrown out that food ASAP. I am so sorry for everyone that has lost an animal and I am so grateful you helped me not lose mine.

Copy from 4 Paws University - In addition, corn may inhibit your dog's natural ability to send sufficient serotonin to the brain. For dogs that are over-excitable or have problem behaviors such as aggression, this can exacerbate problems. Serotonin is an important chemical that reduces stress and anxiety. Recent studies suggest that low serotonin levels can lead to impulsive behavior, aggression and other behavioral problems.

I fed my puppy Purina One puppy formula and he had the runs but was a happy Clown. Then I had him on a different dry food that did not have any corn products and he was a healthy happy clown. I ran out of his food and bought SD Large Breed Puppy food two days ago. The first day he smelled it and ate some. What normally took him 30-60 minutes to eat took him all day. I thought it was due to the change in food. Today was the same problem with eating. However, My happy Clown boy turned into Satan. He started Jumping, and scratching and barking and being "sassy".

It was about 9pm when he went into over drive and got extremely hyper (more so than normal for a puppy) almost Manic and aggressive. He never nipped at a face. Fingers, toes (we are working on that) but never a face. He would not calm down and could not turn off. I decided it had to be the food since it was the only change I made. He got his exercise today and nothing out of the norm until this evening. I removed his food bowl. He had half of his daily feeding still in there, and filled up his water bowl to the top. He had water in it so don't go thinking he was dehydrated. I just wanted to get him to drink some.

Puppies are curious creatures and if there is a change, it must be good and it was. It worked. He drank some water but I still had to sit with him and hold him in place until he was calm enough to just chill. Then, I read this web page and several others and most have the same comments about SD. I am glad I took the bowl away and I am glad it was only a two day issue. I will be cooking for him for the next week while looking for a good company that actually cares with a product that actually is helpful and not harmful. Shame on SD for putting animals through this for your shareholders. You can be profitable and ethical at the same time.

My nightmare started last month. To make a long story short as possible, I had to take my 13-year-old JRT to the ER vet. He just wasn't acting right. Not wanting to go for a walk, drinking a lot wanting to eat a lot. He was diagnosed as a diabetic, but wasn't responding to insulin. He was diagnosed Monday night. By Friday night, he developed a large lump on his stomach which was in the process of being tested, but by Monday the lump ruptured. He had an X-ray and the lump was invasive and growing so rapidly we were advised it was cancer and he wouldn't survive surgery. He was put down 6/9/14. I figured this was age, even though he hadn't been showing signs of issues.

On 7/3/14, my 10-year-old Rat Terrier started vomiting and was taken to the vet. In 10 years he only vomited 2x, so I knew something wasn't right. The week prior, he was to the vet for a checkup and blood work for his upcoming dental appt. When I called the vet to get him in, they reviewed his blood work and advised he was diabetic. I thought for sure they mixed up the lab work on the dogs; they didn't. I was in shock. Lab work was done and his liver values were off the charts. He stopped eating and drinking and had to be hospitalized over the 4th weekend (Thursday-Monday).

All the DRs advised something was going on with his liver and could be a complications from being diabetic. This dog was not sick prior to this issue. He wasn't overweight, drinking or eating more than he should. He didn't show any signs of any issues. The Drs also advised he wasn't acting like a true diabetic and said it could be due to another issue. Today after trying everything we could to help him I had to put him to sleep. Exactly 1 month to the day from my oldest dog. Drs advised both dogs could have had cancer which impacted glucose readings.

I could accept 1 dog having an illness, but 2 dogs dying within a month with similar issues. I have read many of the complaints and see a trend with liver, digestion and diabetic issues. With so many complaints, how do they not want to check the safety of their food? I am $7k + into vet bills and both my "kids" are gone. I would have done anything to save them, but their poor little bodies were shutting down. My dogs were on SD lite for 5+ years and only noticed changes in how they reacted to the food this year. I do not believe this is a coincidence. One vet even asked if the dog was poisoned. Please, some get this food tested, if for no other reason to prove us wrong. I am devastated at the loss on not only one, but 2 dogs in 1 month.

I posted a review in 7/2014, (which is posted). I also filed a complaint directly with Hills, which went nowhere. I have been frustrated with this process and the lack of a voice for my dogs that suffered a horrible death. I fully attribute the death of my dogs (1 month a part) to feeding them Hill Science Diet. All I have asked is for Hill to test the food or admit they have changed something with their food. I just learned that the FDA has a department that deals with pet food complaints. I encourage anyone that has issues with their pet food to contact their local FDA rep (posted on the FDA web site by state) and report the issues. Hang on to everything (medical records, tests, food, and samples). Report the issue quickly so they can get samples if they feel there is something to investigate. I wish I would have known about this department sooner. I have just started the process with the FDA, but they seem very willing to take the info and advised they may even test the food. They keep track of the complaints and seem to take action when needed. Call the FDA! I am after 6 months (now that I know) and they are still willing to listen.

In 3 days time, she went from playing, to throwing-up a few hairballs to throwing up bile. Her kidney values were so elevated they were off the charts - my vet called them unreadable. 6-5-14 I held her as she was put to sleep. He would not eat the food on Saturday and into Sunday. He would go to his bowl and smell it but just walk away. Finally Sunday he ate a very small portion of the food. On mind he began to act very Uncomfortable and not his ordinary self. He was pacing around the house and mostly sleeping. Later Monday evening, he ate another small portion of food and shortly after began to act sick again. After that I picked up the food and researched to see if there were any recalls. I also contacted his Vet, which said there were recalls but not in Florida.

I contacted Science Diet consumer number 800-445-5777 and was abruptly told it was not the food and it was sure to be something else wrong with my dog. I explained to her that I just purchased the dog food Saturday and wanted to return it. She told me that I would not be able to return the food as it may not be their food. My next question to her was, "So I'm a liar?"

My assessment with Science Diet is that 100% satisfaction guarantee is not completely accurate and they do NOT care about the animals they feed. Second of all, cats should not eat grains (corn starch, wheat, etc.). Their bodies do not digest it well. Guess whose products are riddled with grains? That's right Science Diet. Who uses "meat by-products" in their food? Right again, Science Diet. Who received an FDA warning about the havoc its food is wreaking on animal health? BINGO!!! Science Diet.

Does it sound like I am a crusader against this McDonald's equivalent of pet food? You're ** right. This stuff is pure poison and much like McDonald's is killing the pets who eat it. I've attached photos of the labels of a can of Weruva and a can of Wellness. You'll note that it is real food. Note the only one with "meat by-product" and grains is Hill's. Disgusting.

I had brought both my 8 years old, indoor only, cats to a VCA animal hospital around April 2014 just for a routine check up. The vet did full panels of blood work, including fecal and urinary exams/tests to check on their general health. My female cat came back as pre-diabetic because of the dry food and she was overweight, so the vet recommended a strict wet food only, Science Diet MD feeding plan. My male cat was in perfect health, but she recommended me to add wet food into his diet. When I started feeding my female cat the wet MD food, my male cat loved it too! They both went from strict dry food only diet to a wet food only diet and within a month, their coats were beautiful, and they had more energy.

After a month, my male cat started getting diarrhea, and shortly after my female got it too. It's been a never ending battle of vet visits and tests to try to figure out why both my cats are vomiting and having diarrhea. Now, the vet is prescribing the Science Diet ID for a week, with pro-biotic and antibiotics to help cure the almost explosive diarrhea. My male cat became very lethargic and had to get fluids due to the dehydration. My cats have lived healthy and happy for the 8 years up until now after switching to the Science Diet MD wet food. I believe it's something in the food or the protein source. I've been to the vet 4 times in the last month because of these issues, and there is no reason the vet can find that is making them ill. My female cat is currently at the vet because of diarrhea, vomiting, and not eating. This cat eats everything, but the last two days she would not touch her MD. It's got to be the food!
