I have been feeding Nature's Domain Beef/Sweet Potato and Salmon/Sweet Potato with no issues. When I switched to the Turkey/Sweet Potato my dog got deathly ill with failing liver. She is only 2 yrs old and otherwise healthy. She was put on IV fluids and a liver cleanse as well as antibiotics (2 different ones). Her labs do not reflect any infection. That was the only change she has had in her daily activity...just changing the food flavor choice. I fear it is the food that has caused this near-death experience in my dog. It has a Best By date of June 23, 2016.

I have 4 dogs. After slowly transitioning them onto the Nature's Domain Beef and Sweet Potato they all began to become ill and eventually completely reject the food on their own. My largest, strongest 16-month old lost all his strength, muscle and energy within just a couple of weeks. They all had diarrhea but his body was affected the worst with mucus and awful discoloration and smell. He is skinny now. This happened very fast folks. In the beginning I thought it was just their tummies adjusting to the switch but later realized something was very wrong when my big guy could not hold his stools and was losing it in the house. Complete lethargy.
After taking him off the food (all of them off the food, which all of them would rather starve than eat) I have noticed a slow gradual improvement in my big guy. Devastating to think that to save 20 bucks a bag from my normal purchase choice I nearly lost one of my kids. Let me remind you he was a big muscular guy who after this experience has been eating just to make his mama happy... this could have easily killed smaller, older and weaker dog.
I am watching him closely and working with our vet to ensure we do not slip back into a critical zone. He is on probiotics digestive enzymes and a meat home cooked diet for now. Years ago I fed both my kitties and Labrador on the Kirkland brand food for 15 years - they all loved and they thrived. The formula and manufacturing of Kirkland's pet food products has changed. It is no longer safe. Please switch as soon as possible and let Costco know of any issues or symptoms your pet may have experienced. Maybe in the future they will carry a safe and healthy product for a our furry family members but for now not worth the risk to save a few bucks.

Salmon and sweet potatoes dry dog food. May and June of '15. My dog started pooping straight blood and runny poop. I started feeding him KL brand back in Feb. Switched his food to natural balance. For 2 months it went away. I know it WAS the food. Switched him back the 25 of July back to the Kirkland brand. Bloody runny.

I have 4 senior dogs who have been eating the Mature Formula of the Kirkland brand for a few years with no problems. Over the last few weeks, I noticed their stools becoming increasingly softer until it got to the point where one of my dogs was having blood in his stool, then bloody mucus diarrhea, and had to spend the night at the vet. I knew it had to be the food since all of them were having problems. My dogs are too old for me to subject them bad food. I also have 2 cats who have been eating the Kirkland cat food for 4 years and since I got this last bag, one of my cats has scratched her neck bloody raw. I took her to the vet. She said it must be a food allergy. This is ridiculous.

We switched our dogs from Kirkland Nature's Domain to the Kirkland Chicken Adult Dog food about 1.5 months ago. Slightly better reviews and cheaper, so we thought there was no harm. The first bag we gave slowly with current food to switch them over. We bought another back a few weeks back, and within a week, both dogs were VERY sick. We didn't assume it was the food, since they already had gone through one bag.
Both dogs required emergency room visits and ended up costing us a total of about $660. They had projectile diarrhea and vomiting and were completely dehydrated. Both required IV fluids and medication to stop. Both came back negative for all things they were looking for. When we returned home, they were on bland diet for a week or so. Once we started to put food back with them, one was very apprehensive about eating it. We decided to pick up a bag of Nature's Domain. Both are back to feeling great after a few days. We just assumed they had gotten into something when outside to go to the bathroom. I am thinking there was an issue with a batch of Kirkland's Dog Food. We were using Chicken adult.

Our family German Shepherd started eating a new bag of ND Salmon on July 17, 2015, and died July 24, 2015. The autopsy found that she died of hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. The new bag was purchased in Barrie, ON in the beginning of July. Her symptoms came fast and she died within 24 hours. Unfortunately, we were on holidays and the couple who were watching her didn't watch her symptoms close enough, and she bleed to death in our house.
When we came home, we didn't even think of the food as being an issue until we brought home our other German Shepherd who was left at the vet recovering from knee surgery. She started eating the same bag of food on Monday July 27, and her diarrhea and vomiting started July 29. Took her to the emergency clinic and her diarrhea is projectile. Never seen it so bad in my life. Taking her back to a vet shortly. I have fed my dog ND Salmon for the past year, and never had a problem until now. I am getting the food tested. I will be switching to another brand today, and hopefully it isn't too late for my other dog. DO NOT FEED YOUR DOGS THIS FOOD!!! I realize it is probably just a bad bag, but from these reviews, 'bad bags' seem to occur frequently with this brand. Save yourself the grief of losing a dog like we have.
Updated on 09/10/2015:
A third dog ended up getting sick from KS Natures Domain Salmon, both dogs have since recovered. But again, one dog tragically died, she was only 6 years old and had no health concerns. All had symptoms of loss of appetite, vomit, and bloody diarrhea. I have been dealing with Diamond Foods who manufactures this food, and it has been nothing short of a nightmare. They refuse to test my remaining food, which is the only way to prove their food is contaminated with higher than normal levels of bacteria. They produce 375 000 bags of food a week, and only do composite samples here and there, so something wrong is bound to happen. They have a history of massive recalls, poor consumer service and even worse quality control.
Stay away from this food. Do your research and buy food from smaller companies with better-sourced ingredients. Both of our dogs are now being fed Nutrience Grain-free venison, pork and lamb formula. Their coats are so shiny and soft now. Whatever you do, do not feed your dogs this crap! It is toxic! If a class action lawsuit is filed, I would like to be a part of it. Losing one dog was terrible, and the added vet bills has not been fun either.

My dog developed food poisoning symptoms after being fed this food. Otherwise has always been a good food for him. I strongly urge anyone else who has had the experience with Nature Domain's dog food manufactured with best buy date 11 May 2016 to report this to Costco. (I see you on this board and I need your support!!) They are working on an investigation, but only 1 person has reported out of 5500 bags from the batch. If your dog has fallen suddenly ill - please contact Costco by phone or email as soon as possible to help with this investigation!

I have no proof that the dog food is what caused my Queensland Heeler to end up hooked up to an IV, but after reading all of the reviews I have to wonder. My dog had been on puppy food up to 3 weeks ago, but since she was about to turn 1 I purchased the Kirkland Lamb, Rice, and Vegetable Formula. Well after 2 weeks of eating the food our dog became lethargic one day. She wouldn't move, wouldn't eat or drink. She was throwing up all night. We took her to the vet where she had bloody diarrhea and was admitted. She was extremely dehydrated and we were not sure if she would live another day.
She was diagnosed with hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. I just wanted to share this since it seems too coincidental. Our dog is back to health now and I will be buying a different brand of dog food. I was being cheap and it landed me a 1,200 vet bill. Love Costco and its other products but would love for them to look into this product and possibly save dog owners some serious heartache and vet costs. I've had my pit bull mix/mutt (45lbs) on the red bag of Nature's Domain Turkey & Sweet Potato dry food for well over a year now. I feed her one cup every morning and evening and within 3 minutes she gobbles it up. Nothing added, just right out of the bag. She loves it and it treats her great. Her poop is nice and solid and her overall health is great. She has ZERO issues from this food. HOWEVER, after reading everyone's horror stories here today, I am taking her off that food to a more reliable reputable company, FROMM.
It really sounds like there was a giant batch of this dog food made and distributed out there with salmonella poisoning. Diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, loss of appetite - these are all signs of bacterial food poisoning. This should have been recalled but it was not so I am not taking the risk. I am spending about $8 more per bag but it's worth avoiding the suffering of my dog and vet expenses for me. I live in Phoenix, AZ, so maybe the bad batch of food didn't get distributed here....? Best of luck to everyone..... Be well and be good to your animals! :)

Kirkland Chicken Dog Food. I purchased the Kirkland brand Costco dog food and my little chihuahua almost died on me. She came down with pancreatitis. She started at a weight of 10.4 lbs. and dropped to 7.0 lbs. A little dog like that can't afford to drop that much weight. Her rib cage and vertebrae were showing and she was dehydrated. When I took her to the vet, he diagnosed her pancreatitis and gave her subcutaneous fluids. We were up around the clock administering antibiotics, pepcid, pain medicine, and chicken broth. I had to beg her to eat the boiled chicken breast and chicken broth. After several weeks of round the clock care, Chiquita has finally started showing some improvement. She is finally on her way to recovery and has a good prognosis. I don't have the receipt number nor the receipt itself anymore but the proof is on my purchase record at Costco.

My dog has not eaten in 3 days now. She will drink some water. I found these reviews and have to wonder? Although I have another dog who eats the food and he is fine and has been on it for years. Our 16 month old has been on Kirkland since we got him from the breeder when he was a tiny pup. About 2 weeks ago he had an accident in the front room (not normal for him) and it progressed from Friday of diarrhea to no appetite on Sunday, throwing up his water and blood in his diarrhea. Took him to emergency and tested negative for parvo and found nothing on X-ray. Got antibiotics and fluids since he was dehydrated and by Tuesday we were back in. This time bright blood mucus like poop and pink vomit. Another antibiotic and more fluid. Blood test showed nothing but elevated white blood count cells off equaling infection. Even stool test (which was pretty much all blood) was negative for anything. He has slowly progressed with the strict diet of only boiled chicken breast, white rice and broth.
Today I started about a half cup of Kirkland to get him back on dog food and it looks like the diarrhea is back tonight. So I started thinking it's the food and googled it and came to this site where everyone is have all the same symptoms all from the same food. I'm taking our back. And we are going to get our boy some good food. Goodbye Kirkland. You are not worth losing our boy!

I have been using Kirkland's Nature's Domain Dog food for the last two years with my two year old German shepherd. In May 2015, he began getting sick with diarrhea and vomiting occasionally. He had a lot of GI problems where his stomach was always upset and he has been more lethargic. Eventually, he lost most of his appetite. We have taken him to the vet several times where they ran blood work and checked him for parasites to no avail. Recently, we paid a visit to the emergency vet because he was struggling to breathe and vomiting. They did more blood work and took x-rays only to diagnose him with GI problems. Recently, I decided to take him off Kirkland's dog food and he is showing some improvement. His stools are normal again and his appetite is increasing.

I just bought my first bag ever of Kirkland Signature Chicken and Vegetable Dog Food. My dog was up all night with diarrhea and gas which has never happened before. I know when you change food brands it upsets them sometimes but I was concerned. I am not sure yet if the food I have is the cause and will wait a few more days since my other dog is having no problems, but I thought people who come here would like to know that many of these complaints were very real and at the time there was no recall, but now there is. I have no true star rating yet because I am not sure what the problem is.

I have 3 medium mixed breed dogs, 2 males, one female. About 2 years ago I switched to Nature's Domain from Call of the Wild due to similar ingredients at a lower price. I have never had an issue with Nature's Domain. One of my males was diagnosed with Lymphoma at the beginning of May 2015. He was 13 and survived one month before the difficult decision. On approx. 7/6/15 my female started acting very funny followed by vomiting and diarrhea - she is 12.. I was devastated thinking there is no way I can go through this please.. First visit to the vet was 7/9/15, they did a fecal and found blood. She was put on medication and a strict diet (canned food from the vet) with a recommendation of further blood work. First visit 185.00 for exam and fecal.
Meanwhile the male started to vomit periodically but it didn't last. The female is scheduled for blood work tomorrow 7/15/15 (another 200.00). While on vet's dog food and medication her symptoms disappeared, the vet stated we should reintroduce her regular food. First day she vomited. Back about a month ago I had recommended this brand to a friend that has two greyhound rescues. She had bought a bag of this brand. Soon after she had stated that one of her dogs was vomiting every night, the other would not eat the dog food. It was not until today when she told me she had meant to bring me her bag of Nature's Domain that I put it all together. She had bought her bag from the same Costco around the same time I bought my last bag. It was then we pulled up recalls and reviews. Seems several people are having the same issue right now.
Current bag production code is best by 10 May 2016 5130DM N080504C32NJEC 15:53. I truly believe there is currently something wrong with this brand. I sure hope Costco checks into these claims. The ironic thing is I was there this evening to pick up my dogs prescription meds (something Costco promotes that they offer for healthy pets). I am going to be close to 500.00 in to this with the vet and firmly believe with other comments it is the dog food.

I wanted to increase the quality of my dog's food and other reviews said Kirkland was rated well, not top, but in the upper ranks. I started mixing this in with her usual food then got higher concentrations of the Kirkland food. My dog has started chewing the fur off her feet, which I understand can be caused by an allergy problem. I'll be switching back to her old favorite to see if her feet get better. I'm very disappointed because I thought I was doing something to improve my dog's well-being, and it turned out to cause her harm.

Purchased the Kirkland Turkey and Sweet Potato. The dogs got sick (diarrhea) but I did not suspect the food given. They are outdoor dogs and could've easily gotten into something. Kept feeding for three more days and they continued to be ill and even getting sick in their crates at night. Switched to a new food brand (Purina ONE) and the diarrhea and sickness went away in 24 hrs. Love me some Costco but this dog food needs to be pulled as it seems many others here have experienced similar issues.

I have used Nature's Domain for several years and haven't had any problems. My concern is that it's made by Diamond Pet Foods. They are notorious for producing food with salmonella. I don't know why a company like Costco doesn't know that and take measures to have it corrected or change manufacturers.

We have 3 German Shepherds and we had been feeding Diamond Grain-Free Dog Food for some time. We switched to Kirkland Nature's Domain about 2 months ago and we have had no issues. It's made by Diamond and is same quality and better price per pound. The only dog food I have ever had an issue with is Blue Buffalo. It caused severe diarrhea with one of my GSD's. Mother Nature makes its own rules and dog food is not a one size fits all. I will be transitioning our dogs over to a raw diet over the next 6-12 months and I will wean them off commercial dog food.

Kirkland Dog food - Natures Domain. I wanted to add to all of the online reviews of Costco brand dog food. We have been on the dog food for about 6 months with no issues, then all of the sudden with our most recent purchase of dog food my dog developed vomiting and diarrhea for 3 days. By the third day he had almost straight blood for diarrhea and was dehydrated. After our vet visit we are still not sure what the main cause was. Our friend gave us her bag of Kirkland's Nature Domain dog food because her dog wouldn't eat it. I thought it would be great since it states it is organic grain free. Over the next 6 months our dog got extremely ill with thick nasal discharge, hacking, reverse sneezing and several infections from the discharge. After spending $1,400 in vet bills it occurred to me it might be the dog food, despite the fact that it was supposed to be a high end brand. After taking him off of the dog food, he was 85% better in a few days and 95% better in the course of a couple weeks. I found out there were hundreds of complaints about this dog food online. No wonder my friend's dog did not eat the dog food. Our dog is now on homemade food and is doing much better.

I just returned from now my 5th trip to the vet for my 2 dogs and learned now my 2nd dog has a form of liver disease. Both dogs over the last 2 months have blown up like balloons with fluid, pretty much rejected food all together and according to ultrasounds liver size has reduced significantly. Hepatitis/liver disease is not transmittable and quite honestly the only hypothetical possibility the doctors are investigating is food. The other interesting tidbit of information from the doctor is that there have been a sudden onset in the area going from 5 cases over the last 10 years to 11 cases over the last 5 months. All cases are geographically separated and would suggest something else is going on... the food... Kirkland adult brand dog food, is it you?

Our dogs have been on the Costco dry dog food for a couple of years now. We've never had a problem in the past. Our recent bag was purchased a couple weeks ago (ITM./ART. 25347). We add various kinds of moist dog food in with the kibble. When my pit bull got diarrhea a week and a half ago, I eliminated the canned moist and added fresh ground turkey and rice to her kibble but when her diarrhea got worse, I eliminated all commercial pet food and after about 5-6 days her stool returned to normal. In the interim, our other dog who was still eating the Costco food had diarrhea once or twice. Since I wasn't sure the cause of her diarrhea, I put her back on the Costco dry dog food and her diarrhea is worse than before. Please call Costco to report if you are experiencing any problems with their dry food. It should be recalled. 1-800-774-2678.

We are breeders of golden retrievers for 15 years. When Costco first introduced the nature's domain dog food, we were skeptical, but did the research, even called the ACTUAL company that makes it FOR Costco. This IS the same food as the HIGH QUALITY "Taste of the Wild" dog food. We have been using it exclusively for MANY years, since Costco started Nature's Domain. NO problems. They DO eat less because they don't need as much since it is a higher quality food. We use primarily the Beef, some Salmon, and the puppy version (though the "adult" version is also good for the puppies).
We HAVE heard of some dogs getting sick from the "organic chicken" version - you know, the high priced "organic" crap!!! Perhaps it is not the food, but the quality of dogs it is being fed to? You can't make a great healthy dog just because it is being fed a high quality food. If a dog is a mixed breed, etc. there are problem, inherent health problems that a good quality food is not going to "fix".

I decided to try the Kirkland cat food and switched my 5 cats over. The first bag was fine, no issues that I noticed with any of my cats. After I opened the second bag and started using it, one of the cats started having diarrhea. I stopped giving cans of cat food so they were only eating the kibble. I have, by process of deduction, figured out that it is my littlest cat, named Kitten, who is having the diarrhea. It is explosive and there is blood in it. I can also see parts of the kibble so I know that she is not digesting it. I am returning the bag today and will put them on their old food. Kitten is going to see the vet this afternoon. I haven't seen any weight loss or lethargy but I need to make sure she hasn't had any kidney damage. I was trying to save a few dollars and now I am going to spend a lot more than I thought with vet bills.
I am a tried and true Costco customer but am extremely saddened by this and all the other reports on here about other animals suffering and the common denominator is the Kirkland brand. I will follow-up with Kitten's report from the vet. Hopefully I have stopped the food in time and none of my other cats will suffer and Kitten will recover.

The only change to his routine was the introduction of the new dog food. After stopping and returning Costco crappy dog food, and going back on Natural Balance (his regular dog food), his behavior slowing returned to his normal attentiveness and willingness to eat. This took 24-48 hours before he once again returned to his normal eating behavior. So when me and my boyfriend first decided we wanted to get a puppy, we searched long and hard for the perfect puppy. Finally, me and my boyfriend found the most adorable little Shiba Inu back in September 2014. When we bought Mirza (our puppy's name), the breeder was using the Kirkland puppy dog food. When we brought him home we decided to just continue giving him the same food. Everything was going well, and when he got older we switched him to the lamb and brown rice adult food. He loved his food, he was always so excited to eat, until his appetite changed. I started noticing at the beginning of May 2015 that my Shiba was no longer his energetic self. He was sleeping all day, wouldn't eat and had really made diarrhea. My boyfriend and I were really worried because we thought that maybe he had worms.
We brought him to the vet and spent $160 on tests for him to get blood work, but soon after the results came back negative. So later that night I decided to do some research on his food, then discovered after reading everyone's reviews that there was a high chance it was his food. Just the other day we switched his food to the Grain-Free Simply Nourish food, and since then our little Mirza has been acting like himself, excited to eat, and always wanting to play. In other words, IF YOUR DOG IS SICK AND YOU'RE FEEDING THEM KIRKLAND FOOD, IT IS THE FOOD THAT IS MAKING THEM ILL. I highly recommend switching your dog food, because they have most definitely their recipe because I have noticed a lot of people are having the same issues. I hope everyone's dogs/cats are better after switching from the Costco brand food.

I can't believe the reviews here because we have the EXACT same problem! The fact that this is so widespread is appalling and Costco needs to step it up and do a recall. Our dogs won't touch their food and when they do it's barely a few small bites if anything. They are starving because the food is crap! Our beagle has always had less of an appetite out of the two, but she pretty much doesn't eat anything at all since we started buying the grain free stuff at Costco. One bag has actually lasted us twice as long as we are accustomed to because our dogs are barely eating! Our lab/shep mix used to have the appetite of a dude on a hover round rolling into a Golden Corral buffet, now she won't so much as look at her bowl.
We will not be purchasing Costco's dog food anymore. We love to shop there and honestly I feel that most Kirkland brand products are great, but the dog food should be avoided at ALL COSTS! We are going back to Nutro Grain Free, more expensive yes but we love our dogs and I can't stand the thought of them eating that garbage and getting sick off of it anymore. RECALL IT COSTCO!

The other two are puppies and were not fed this so it is NOT a viral illness. And the puppies get the same dry as the adults so it is not the dry food. Also, I have two boarding dogs here who thankfully came with their own food and are not sick. So, logically, it has to be the Kirkland canned food.

Changed from the nature's domain salmon and sweet potato to the nature's domain turkey and sweet potato. I was very careful about making a slow change. Day two - both dogs had to constantly go outside in the middle of the night. They were vomiting. Next morning my big dog would not eat, had diarrhea, vomiting. This became progressively worse in a short time. He began vomiting blood, diarrhea was blood filled, what little he had left. He was lethargic, uncomfortable, appeared in pain. I rushed him to the vet. He was placed on IV fluids, many meds to ease the severe gastrointestinal upset and still not sure if he is going to be okay.
This dog had less than 1 cup of the turkey and sweet potato dog food mixed in with his regular food (the salmon and sweet potato) and he is a big 80 pound boy. Right now he is very sick. I will never feed Costco dog food and will return the bag I just purchased. Really, it seems criminal that they continue to sell this dog food. My vet also feels fairly certain it was the dog food that caused this intestinal trauma. My other dog had diarrhea but no vomiting. He seems to be okay, but keeping him on rice and cottage cheese for a few days to be sure. The highest quality food seems like a bargain after a 1000.00 vet bill - all from less than one cup of Costco food. I can't imagine what was in there.

On May 22nd, we picked up our two mini Australian Shepherd puppies. The breeder feed them the Kirkland chicken dry food. We noticed they would frantically bite their back legs and turn in circles trying to bite their tails. They both suffered from diarrhea - my little Cheyanne had it the worst. I was up with her the 2nd night every 45 minutes! Until it was almost all a bloody liquid. After a visit with the vet to check for Guardia and switching their food, forgetting about the slow transition, they are sleeping better at night and no more frantic biting! All I can say is stay away from the Kirkland food!

I was feeding my cat Orijen cat food (high quality but expensive). After doing some research the Kirkland brand cat food came up highly rated and much much cheaper. After a couple years of feeding my now 8 yr old male cat this food he has developed crystals. His treats are very limited so the only cause for this would be the food. I now also have a 1 yr and a 2 yr old cat that I was feeding the Kirkland to, now all 3 will have to be put on the "special" urinary tract diet. I am now $900 poorer due to vet bills not even having the surgery done.

We were trying to save money and I knew I should have kept my shepherds on Taste of The Wild but we were at Costco and needed dog food so we bought Domain turkey. Everything was ok until about a week later and my youngest GSD started vomiting after eating her food. We then switched back to our previous food but she is still getting sick and I started researching Costco dog food and I couldn't believe all the problems these animals are having. The other two dogs are fine but the baby is still sick and now I will take her to the vet. By the way, "TASTE OF THE WILD" is the best dog food and I should have never switched just to save some money.

I love Costco and shop there exclusively. We have been using KIRKLAND foods then Nature's Domain when it came out years ago. In March, got a new batch of wet food. I fed the Kirkland wet lamb food to all my animals. Explosive throwing up, diarrhea and general sickness for days. My house was covered in sickness by my 2 dogs and one cat. I returned the food and got my money back. I complained to the worker and she said she uses the same food with no response. I thought maybe it was a fluke. I kept the can, but recently moved and it got thrown away.
This past week I got a new batch of beef and sweet potato (yellow bag). Opened it up like nothing and started to feed. We are on day 2 of feedings and I noticed Raven, who always finishes her food, won't even touch it nor get excited for meal time. Buster eats his food funny. Won't eat at meal times, but will save and eat one or two pieces throughout the day. He was actually eating it like a normal dog this time. Odd. Come last night, day 4, Raven threw up in MY bed 2 times, peed on the floor and after putting them in the kennel for the rest of the night, threw up all over her house. She is walking drunk like and is definitely sick a all heck. I noticed last night Busters anus was dark colored, which is not normal for him. As I read reviews I think that he is having a weird response to the food as well. At least he's not throwing up this time.
On another note, my dad uses the same food, for years and got a new bag. He just got home from the vet last night. His dog started to have a distressing immune response to the food. Needless to say I will return this bag and not purchase this again. 2 TIMES in a few months is enough for me to realize this is not a fluke but neglect on their part. Serious sickness is hurting our pets!

My pit bull Sapphire used Nature's Domain Salmon and Sweet Potato for almost her entire life. She had skin issues and was constantly in and out of the vet. Both my dogs started hacking and throwing up. I switched their food immediately after seeing this. My pit bull got a serious skin condition and ended up having a seizure in the middle of the night. At first I thought she hurt her toe because she could not walk at all. I rushed her to the vet and they put her on a IV and did blood work. I had to bring her to another vet because my vet was not going to be available the next day. As soon as I got her to the second vet they said she was in critical condition and had bloat of the stomach which kills them in a couple hours. There was foam coming in large amounts out of her mouth. She could not walk at all and had three seizures. She died at the vet. It was horrible and I know it was from the food. She was only 5 years old.
This product is poison and will kill your dog in the long run. Do not ever use this food. There was a class action lawsuit because of so many pets dying from this product. They say that I can no longer make a claim because the suit is closed. How is it possible that Costco and Diamond did not notify all the customers using this pet food about the suit and only certain people were allowed to be in the suit and they were notified. My dog was on this food and died at a very young age. This food is still on the shelf and more dogs will die from it. How can I stop these people from killing innocent animals. If anyone wants to band together and go after these people please let me know so we can open a new case against them for keeping this poison on the shelf.

I mean Kirkland in most any other product is really good so we figured why not try the animal food. All of our animals have vomiting and diarrhea after a week of eating the food. None of the animals were sick before that. Pretty quickly we knew the only thing it could be is the new food. We've already switched back to their old food and plan on returning the Kirkland to Costco tomorrow. I'm sickened that there are so many similar stories and it's still being sold. In addition to the animals being sick, we found a ball of sawdust in the dog food. Unfortunately my boyfriend threw it away but I wish he would have kept it as proof of what is possibly in their food!

Please understand first off that my family loves Costco. We shop there a lot for many items (both food and non-food items). We have been pleased by every transaction & return process. Their customer service is typically top notch. All that said, I am completely mystified. After ALL THESE awful experiences WHY are these products still on the market?!?! We switched my dog from another brand of dog food to Kirkland's back in the fall. We did so both in an effort to save $ and because we know that our experiences with Kirkland products has always been sublime. However, I will not ever endorse this product.
My dog has had intermittent stomach issues that I just attributed to him getting older (he's not that old-- only 8). He has also been consuming less dog food than usual. Again, I just assumed he was getting older. Two weeks ago he began having seizures. The vet ran a tox screen along with some other testing. Nothing appeared abnormal except for elevated liver enzymes which the vet could not explain. After reading about other people's similar experiences, I cannot accept this as coincidence. I am throwing out the rest of the bag and will never feed this product to my dog again and I will also be telling everyone I know about it. Costco--please figure out what is making all these sweet babies sick & fix it fast!

He was taken to the vet two days ago after eating it and we had to put him down. We thought he had just become incontinent. We are now devastated to learn it was the food causing this. Two dogs have been throwing up and diarrhea one is throwing up blood and shaking. The other two larger dogs have extreme and I do mean extreme gas. Never had it before.
I took the food back and told them to take it off the shelf immediately or I was going to start talking out very very loud. The man advised me not to do that, and told me he could not do that and said for me to send a complaint to head office, which I did. They called today and just said they would get the dog food maker to call, still no call. I had been using Kirkland's Chicken and Rice cat kibble for 3 years, was happy with the results, and my 4 cats liked it.. Then I started noticing some odd symptoms in my cats, especially my two elderly cats. Both of them starting getting diarrhea and bad gas off and on, and one of them starting getting hair loss and losing weight. I took her to the vet, but they couldn't find anything except her kidneys were a little abnormal and gave me some medicine. Not too much changed, she was still losing weight, and I was very confused. Then in late January, my other older white cat, sudden fell very ill. She was listless, lethargic, cold, and her gums were white. I rushed her to the vet, and it was not good - all they could find was that she had a stroke, and all that could be done was to put her to sleep as she was suffering.
I was very upset, and had her cremated - her vet and cremation bills were over $300, but I didn't care, she was my baby and I had her for 15 years since she was a tiny kitten. I then noticed from time to time one of my Cornish Rex cats would often vomit his food up, and my cats were starting not to eat the Kirkland kibble I was feeding them. I began to notice my other Cornish Rex was not himself, he started getting a bit of a cold. His backside near his anus began to get red and swollen, and it was getting worse by the day. It began to become more swollen and purplish-black, and I took him to the vet. They diagnosed him with an Upper Respiratory Infection, and an infected anal gland. They had to put him under to drain and clean the abscess, and put a drainage tube in it. He spent a couple of days at the vet, then he was sent home with stitches in his backside, antibiotic ointment, and liquid amoxicillin.
I noticed that the antibiotics were working on healing his backside, but his URI was getting worse. I spent nearly $500 at the vet and was flat broke and frustrated - thankfully I had a friend who did cat rescue who gave me the right antibiotic for the URI. Poor kitty had infections from two different bugs that needed two different types of antibiotics. I just put it behind me, but the symptoms from my other 2 cats continued here and there.
Then I discovered from a friend and fellow pet owner that their cats were bad terribly sick then died except for one, after eating Kirkland Brand cat kibble. They were completely healthy - previously healthy, then after eating Kirkland kibble, began getting bloody diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, hair loss, disorientation, upper respiratory infections, etc. They were rushed to the vet, and the vets could not find what was making them sick, but began a course of treatment. Sadly, 3 of the four cats died, and the owners have ordered a necropsies on them. She also gave me the links for the Consumer Affairs and another one warning about Kirkland kibble. When I read what other pet owners had gone through, I noticed that their pets had a lot of the same symptoms my cats had, and some, like me, had lost a pet possibly due to Kirkland kibble.
I feel very awful that I inadvertently fed my cats food that made them very sick and even caused one to die. When disposing of the kibble in the garbage tonight, I noticed an odd odor to it, like it was stale/spoiled and a bit of a weird plastic smell. I kept a small Ziploc bag of it in the freezer as evidence, because Kirkland needs to be held accountable for their actions. People have lost beloved pets, and many more have incurred huge vet bills.

I've always fed my pits grain-free dog food (any flavor but chicken). And someone mentioned that Kirkland has a good grain-free dog food and that it is reasonably cheap at Costco so I tried it. I got Salmon grain-free. It took about 2-3 weeks to switch completely over. And about 1-2 weeks after completely switching, my dog was no longer excited to eat and then stopped eating altogether. He normally ate 4-5 cups each day and over the course of a couple of weeks he was eating 1 cup a day. And I think he was only doing that because he was starving and had no other choice. He also had diarrhea.
I chalked it up to him being depressed (we had just adopted out another pit that I had been fostering for 6 months) and that perhaps the dog food had gone stale so I went back to Costco and purchased the beef meal grain-free. It's been 2-3 weeks. For the first couple of days he ate normally and I was relieved thinking he just didn't like the salmon flavor. But he started eating grass and then the other night he vomited up the entire cup of dog food that he ate for dinner. Finally I decided to do some research on Kirkland and found reviews describing similar issues that my dog has been having. A week ago I switched back to my more expensive grain-free brand and not only is he excited for meal times again, I haven't seen him eating grass and he hasn't thrown up again or had diarrhea.

Smell the dog food bag when you open. Some have a not-so-good odor. It’s a fairly good rated dog food due to excluding the fillers like in Iams, Science Diet or other highly commercialized food. It’s a little pain to return but cheaper than a vet bill. The Kirkland Healthy Weight works well. No issues with it. I notice that folks have posted food with sweet potato mixed in. I would be very leery due to the issues with potatoes such as "Blight". Dog food makers can be using or buying rejected potatoes. Unfortunately it’s a trial by error type of effort.

A month after we adopted our lab mix in the spring of 2010, we purchased Kirkland dog food, assuming it was Iambs being offered via Costco (at the time, Iambs was no longer available at our Costco).
Within a month, our dog was voraciously thirsty, and having accidents in the house. She developed intestinal issues. When we brought her to the vet, the vet discovered early signs of kidney failure. She asked us what dog food we were using, and recommended we change the food. Our dog improved within days. When we tried to reintroduce the other food, she became ill again. I brought the bag of dog food back to Costco (Mayfield Hts., OH), stating my concerns. I asked to file a complaint form, and I was dismissed. "We haven't heard of this before," was the response I got. I urged them to have someone contact me about my concerns for other animals. "Your dog must have a food allergy," was the response I got. Poor customer service regarding this issue.

Returning our Lamb, Rice & Vegetable Formula to Costco el pronto - We started feeding from our second bag of this food yesterday. Our two dogs ate it fairly well, but my husband and I have noticed they were passing a tremendous amount of gas. We wondered if it was the food, so I started researching reviews. How many dogs have to get sick, run up huge vet bills, experience physical pain, have their owners feel guilty for feeding this seemingly toxic food to their beloved pets, and even watch them slowly die before pulling it from the shelves? We are thankful our dogs have not started exhibiting some of the symptoms shared by other reviewers. Passing gas every 15 to 30 minutes is a small problem, but we don't want to "wait & see" if they become really ill. We're returning the uneaten portion to Costco and going back to the food they were eating previously, even if it is more expensive. Cheap pet food is no cost savings if it causes illness.

I have been feeding my dogs this food for about three years and never had issues until a few months ago (early January 2015). It started with my 1 1/2 year-old Terrier. She had infected anal glands, and the vet said it may be the food. I dismissed it, because I have always had faith in Kirkland's grain free salmon and sweet potato. After a round of antibiotics, her anal infection came back a week later. Then my other three dogs (two huge Labs, each 120 pounds, and a 7 pound Chi) all started throwing up. I knew this couldn't have been a coincidence. I switched them to 4Health dog food, and no more throwing up, and my dog's anal glands no longer smell. Coincidence? We're done with Kirkland's. I'm taking back my opened bag and demanding a refund.

We have had 2 dogs in the house for the last 20 years. For 1/2 that time they ate Ol' Roy from Walmart and now Kirkland for the last 10. Never a problem with either. They have all had great long lives with rarely a vet visit except vaccinations. I think problems are often with the owners, not the dogs.

I bought a big bag of this cat food during the summer and my cats loved it. They were healthy and doing well. In December as the bag was running low, I bought another bag. This time they were reluctant to eat it. One got bloody stools, the other was throwing up, and neither had much energy. I read these posts, bought their old food and within days they are feeling better. I returned the food to the store and told them what had happened. They were concerned and put a note in the computer. I wrote in big red letters on the bag, "do not feed to animals... danger" so they would not donate it to a shelter.

I can't believe these below reviews. We have had the EXACT same experience. We just spent $500 at the vet. Our dog would throw up 20 minutes to 2 hours after eating her chicken and rice dog food, have diarrhea, we could hear loud gurgling from her stomach, TERRIBLE gas and would stretch constantly as if she was trying to move something (I feared something was lodged in her gut). She has been eating this food for 9 months now with No issues. I am so happy I saw these reviews because we were at a loss for what was wrong. We will be switching to different dog food from now on. I'm so disappointed with Kirkland! They should be covering all our vet bills for making our dogs so sick.

We used Kirkland brand Lamb and Rice dog food from 2010-2013 for our two mixed breeds. In the Spring of 2013, one of our two dogs got very sick with vomiting, loud tummy noises, bloody diarrhea, and both suffered from loss of appetite (very unusual). By May 2013 we were regularly visiting the vet for the one dog that was getting sick. We did blood work and parasite tests at each veterinarian visit, but nothing could be pinpointed. The vet suggested food allergies and limited ingredient diet. Then in July, after feeding the dogs homemade chicken and rice, the symptoms went away. Numerous times I called the vet at Diamond Pet Food that I was referred to by Kirkland. This vet at Diamond kept claiming there were no recalls for the batch of kibble we had.
I finally switched to Annamaet Aqualuk and have had no more issues with the dogs digestive system or appetite. Please note, just because Kirkland food is made in the U.S. A. that does not mean that all ingredients are from the U.S.. There could be ingredients from other countries but as long as the food is put together in the U.S. then they are allowed to stamp the product with made in the U.S.A.. Though I am a fan of Costco, I lost some respect for the company as there have been many problems with the Kirkland brand of dog food. Yet Costco appears to turn their head the other way and only offer a refund for the product. I would like an answer as to why one of my dogs nearly died from Kirkland dog food, not a refund. I will pay a little more for a quality food that does not make either dog sick, and that they will readily eat. A dog's nose is a lot more sensitive than ours. If they won't touch the food then something is wrong.

Last August 2014, we switched from Iams dog food to Kirkland brand from Costco. Our 7-year old dog has been completely healthy. A few weeks after switching to Kirkland dog food, our dog developed a red mass on her tummy. We took her to the vet and he gave our dog antibiotics for what he called a mass that was the result of an infection. We didn't consider that it was the change in dog food at the time. After two of weeks of antibiotics, it cleared up. Slowly, over the next four months, more masses appeared all over her body. We took our dog to the vet again, and he said they were cysts from changing dog food. She has been on antibiotics for one week so far and it's not better. She will be on antibiotics for twenty days. She has been back on Iams for 6 weeks. We'll never buy Kirkland dog food again due to the sickness it has caused.

Last week, one of my 3 dogs got very ill. She threw up blood and was refusing to eat. Over the course of 3 days, she was at the regular vet three times, along with spending the night at the emergency vet. After many tests, they couldn't find anything besides severe GI irritation and we chalked it up to her having a more sensitive stomach.
I have fed my dogs Kirkland Lamb & Rice for some time now. It crossed my mind while she was sick that maybe they changed their recipe and she didn't agree with it - after all my other two dogs were just fine. Now that I have read these reviews I am convinced this was the issue with her and will be immediately taking my dogs off of any Kirkland food. This is such a disappointment as Costco is such a great company. I expected more from them and am surprised I haven't heard the food has been causing so many issues.

I took him to the vet for testing and they found nothing. He had lost about 7 lbs and was just not himself. As soon as I took him off of the food, he recovered almost instantly. I am glad I came across these reviews and learned that like many other I also bought this horrible poisonous food from Costco.
It might be the latest batch but looks like it has made my puppy very sick. He is not even eating home made rice and doesn't even go close to his water bowl. I tried everything but he became very lethargic. Not playful at all and sleeps in his crate all the time. My 17 year old healthy wonderful border terrier died because of the poison that this dog food is. End of Jan, we got a new bag of the salmon dog food from Costco. Zorro started throwing up, having loose stools, getting disoriented, losing control of his limbs and falling down randomly while walking. He often walked into corners and did not seem to know what to do. He was constantly thirsty. At first, he had difficulty with his rear legs. As he stood, his rear legs would give way and he would plop down, seemingly involuntarily. Later, his forelegs started failing and he kept falling down with his forelegs splayed out.
We took him to the vet who could find nothing wrong with him. They suggested that there might be something in his trachea (x rays) and that he probably needed surgery. His blood work was good and although his liver count was high, they could not find any reason for why it might be high. We went to two other vets for a second and third opinion. Both said there was nothing in his trachea and that no surgery was needed. He even had an ultrasound exam for confirmation. One suggested treating possible infection with antibiotics. He continued getting worse. The vet said to take him off antibiotics on 18th Feb to reduce his throwing up. At the same time, he stopped eating food.
On the 19th, we thought he looked better. He seemed more aware. However, he continued to slip and fall down as he moved. On the 20th which was one of the coldest days in record here in Maryland, he went out through the doggy door and I found him frozen outside sometime later. I took him to the vet. His temp was 92. Over a period of 3 hours they got his temp up to 97.5. During this period, he had bloody diarrhea which progressively got worse. Then his temp went up to 99 at which point he threw up a huge quantity of bile tinged with blood. The vet said a deteriorating gut was very painful and that both ends of his digestive tract were compromised and he wasn't going to make it. When I decided to put him down and talked to him, he opened his eyes suddenly and I saw intelligent eyes looking into mine for two minutes while I talked to him and told him how sorry I was.
It must have been because of all the poison that came out of him in the last few hours. After losing him, as I talked to my brother that night, he asked me what he had been eating when I told him Zorro had stopped eating two days back and seemed slightly better. Then he said there were 227 complaints online about the dog food. Reported symptoms - throwing up, diarrhea, disorientation, becoming unable to walk and eventually, death. I even came across other cases of inexplicable high liver count. Three vets did not figure it out. Everyone stopped thinking as soon as they knew he was 17 years old. It did not matter that he was very healthy and the onset of deterioration very sudden.
Zorro went out on a very cold day, must have been unable to get up after losing control of his limbs and did not come back in. For my part I did not find him in time. I called Costco and told them about the food. They said they would be in touch. When I told them to stop selling the bad food, they said - "we haven't found anything wrong with the food... although there have been a lot of complaints." I do not understand how they can keep selling it.

My vet recommended Nature's Domain Beef and Sweet potato dog food for my 8 year old Australian Cattle dog rescue. She had problems with food with grains, itchy goopy ears, itchy paws, itchy everything...so we switched to Nature's Domain a year ago and everything cleared up beautifully...She was happy and itch-free, loved the food, nice firm poop, lots of energy...until about December with a new bag of Nature's Domain, this time Salmon and Sweet potato, which she had before and loved it, and we gradually switched to as usual.
Almost immediately her ears started itching again, her poops were much looser and I swear, her output is more than her intake!! She gets only grain-free treats, usually apples, carrots, and the occasional grain-free dog biscuit. She also developed bad gas and we though maybe she was getting into the cat food somehow! However, we switched back to a new bag of Beef and Sweet potato and the itchy ears eased up a little, but I also started treating her ears with meds too, so it may be the meds were doing their work. In the last week she is shaking her head all day and night, scratching her ears, large amounts of loose and smelly poop and terrible gas, licking and chewing her paws again...she's not a happy girl :(
I'm switching to a different brand of dog food for now, and returning the two bags of dog food to Costco. Sometimes things like this happen and until they have enough complaints, they have no reason to change what they are doing (not all dog foods, however good they are, are right for every dog). So I will let them know and hopefully they will try and track down the problem, eliminate it, and we can eventually go back to Kirkland's Nature's Domain dog food, because I think it's a good product otherwise.

If your dog has the runs, gas and digestive issues then your dog may not have the ability to process the foods you are giving him/her. You may be able to solve it simply or through help of a vet and special foods which are available. I'm not a gold plated dog food bowl kind of guy. My greater family had many dogs over the last 3-4 generations and they ate supermarket dry food and Milk Bone dog biscuits and some table scraps. So I'm not pushing any diet or advocating spending any more $$ than necessary.
That said, you should try changing foods not based on price or claims to be organic or sent from heaven but based on the ingredients. If your dog is really suffering from vomiting, loose stool, diarrhea and/or skin rashes you need to change the food and hopefully get good results before calling in the dog psychiatrist or surgeon. Trial and error may provide a simple solution. If you want to jump to attacking a suspected G/I tract problem through targeted foods (which are relatively expensive) try the Hills Prescription Diet products - notably a low fat dry and/or wet product like the i/d Low Fat G/I Restore product.
I only know about this because we just adopted a 5 month old pit bull puppy which was in a pound, had parasites, and ended up with a distended colon and required surgery to keep the colon/rectum in it's proper place. This food was given to us by those fostering the dog post-surgery. It is designed for dogs with sensitive guts or those with diagnosed medical problems. He needs easily digestible food to prevent straining and low fat is apparently part of the treatment.
Low fat won't hurt your dog so try it for 3-4 days and see if it helps. It's only available through a vet or online retailers from what I can see and is expensive but cheaper than prescription drugs, office visit fees, and more drastic means. You can search on the Hills website for a local vet who has it. Check out the user comments on the Hills site and compare to your situation - you may find eerily similar descriptions to your dogs. No, I don't work for Hills nor had I ever used their products before.
I wanted to offer this because I read these complaints and saw a common thread regarding the dogs’ conditions I read on this site. I don't think the Kirkland dog food is poisoning these dogs but I do think many of them have issues like the ones I have only been exposed to in the last year. Unfortunately, we have digestive problems with two new dogs we adopted after losing our previous doggies to old age.... We now have the 5 month old pit described above and another pit bull terrier who is about 2 years old.
A simpler solution that may help your dog: after much internet research and some experimentation, we seem to have found a good, cheap solution to the older pit bull's digestive problems - apple cider vinegar. I am a natural born skeptic and have a degree in the sciences, which is to say I'm not taken in by fads and BS. I add about 1/2 - 1 tablespoon of the apple cider vinegar to about 2 cups of dry kibble in the morning (he eats twice a day). I diluted it to about half strength when first starting out and now just add a tablespoon to his dry about 5 days a week. I have not done a scientific study, I have simply seen his conditions improve. It has seemed to help quite a bit.
Apple cider vinegar is an old time remedy for many things including human digestive issues. He had loose stools, diarrhea and a rash from his chest to his privates and spent a good deal of time itching. These symptoms have all but disappeared after a few months on the vinegar. I also use it occasionally to get rid of a rash in the deep folds of skin in the armpit area. We've never had pit bulls before but they run hot and seem to get fungal type infections in the warm, moist areas of their skin. They have also turned out to be very loving and good natured dogs.
We feed the older pit a blend of foods and hopefully the little guy we just got this weekend will transition successfully off the high $ Hills prescription stuff. I stay away from chicken based products and go for lamb and rice mostly. I started feeding my dogs Nutra Nuggets dry (not Nutro) some years ago after comparing ingredients with the premier brands of dry dog food which go for up to $50 for a 30-40 lb. bag. I occasionally use the Kirkland dry but really like the quality, good feeding habits and price of the Nutra Nuggets. Also used this brand of dry cat food for two cats with no problems. I get it at Pet Club in the SF Bay area where I live. I don't think PetSmart or some of the other big pet chains carry it but I did find it once at Smart n Final of all places.
Regarding Kirkland, I have used both the dry and wet Kirkland dog foods - the lamb and rice dry which seems ok and the turkey and peas canned food. The canned turkey & peas has been well received by all three of our dogs in recent years. It gets good ratings and I haven't had any issues, dogs love it and so does one of the cats in particular. The cat likes the "gravy" in this canned dog food more than any of the wet cat food I buy. Best of luck.

In December I noticed that all 4 dogs started becoming extremely gassy. Our house smelled like one of them pooped in in constantly! Big puffs of noisy gas, angry tummies, vomiting and diarrhea and funny looking stools. They were getting me up 3-4 times a night to have to go outside, as well as throughout the day.
We do not feed them people food, and limit the store bought treats to 2 brands, and I make them homemade treats that are well tolerated. We were out of store bought and homemade treats at the time. I fed the dogs this bag of food that was bought mid to late December for about a week. We were all noticing the problem with the dogs and immediately knew it had to be the food that they were eating. There was nothing else it could have been.
We went to Costco and purchased the Nature's Domain Beef and Sweet Potato. Immediately they all started feeling better. Firm stools and the gas was getting better (sudden dog food switches can cause gas as well, so I knew that would be expected, but hopefully at a lesser degree), no vomiting and stomach/intestinal noises. The dogs were slowly getting back to normal.
I bagged up the Kirkland Signature Chicken and Rice and returned it to Costco and wanted them to document my complaint. Unfortunately I did not have the bag since we purchased the big clear dog food container and I dump the bags directly into that. I got a refund and bought another bag of the Nature's domain. We go through a 35lb bag of that every week and a half. We have not had any issues with the beef and sweet potato yet. But after ready all these negative reviews, I will be switching their food again. Most likely to the Taste of the Wild brand.
I'm really disappointed. Over the years we have always used Diamond Lamb and Rice food for our dogs, until one of our new puppies could not tolerate the lamb, so we made the switch to the Kirkland Signature brand Chicken. Our dog have been on this all their lives for at least the last 13 years, which is the age of our oldest dog, and have NEVER had any issues. I knew Diamond was the manufacturer of the K.S. brand, and wondered about the Nature's Domain as well.
I should also note, as I was scooping the old K.S. dog food out of the container, I did notice some green specks in some of the kibble (reminded me of the color of the little fertilizer balls in plant potting soil). I found that to be odd since the K.S. bag was burgundy in color, so it wasn't a bit of the bag, and I use all of the bag of food before dumping the new bag in the container, and the container is always sealed, except when I am refilling the dog bowls.
I'm highly concerned about this issue, and I'm so glad I caught this in time and my dogs are fine! I'm sorry for all those dogs who died and suffered from this problem. I hope Costco does document my complaint, and I hope they address these issues as well. I know all K.S. branded products are supposed to be of higher quality standards than the main product brands that supply K.S. brands, now I'm having my doubts.

We switched our Great Dane to Nature's Domain Lamb and Rice. He had no problems with it until the last bag we bought in mid-December. He was throwing up and had terrible diarrhea and after one day of this, we couldn't even get him to lift his head. We took him to the vet and he got lots of fluids and thankfully that caused him to get some energy. When we took him off of the food and he immediately got much better. We are still dealing with the repercussions as he is still having runny stools and doesn't want to eat all the time but we are just thankful he recovered. We will never feed any of our dogs Kirkland food again.

I have been using Kirkland Signature healthy weight dog food for about 3 years with no complaints. Just bought 2 bags about 2 weeks ago and starting this past Monday 3 out of my 7 dogs are very ill. Vomiting, lethargy, excessive drooling, loss of appetite and then blood in vomit. Went to the vet and we ran blood work and found they all are experiencing severe GI inflammation. All are on meds. They needed sub Q fluids and one dog almost needed to be admitted due to the severity.
I immediately knew there had to be a common denominator in all this and the only thing is the new bag of food we just opened for them. Taking food back and switching brands immediately. Saw the other complaints filed that are identical to the illness that my dogs are experiencing. Rather safe than dead.

I got a Rhodesian Ridgeback from a breeder in Arizona on December 6th, 2014. The breeder indicated that she was feeding the Kirkland brand that was grain free. She gave me some in a zip bag. The dog had diarrhea in our truck while we were still with the breeder. She put it off to nerves. Went to Costco and purchased the Kirkland dog food. The dog continued to be listless and have bouts of very soft stools every couple of hours. On Monday went to the vet got meds and a specialty food. This helped but didn't completely get rid of the problem.
As soon as the meds and specialty food was gone the diarrhea was back again. Back to the vet again, more meds and more special food. This last batch of special food actually made the diarrhea worse. So back to Costco and bought a different Kirkland brand but again that made the diarrhea even worse. So I got the Kirkland brand originally given by the breeder. Now I am adding rice to it and the diarrhea has almost stopped, but my baby still doesn't feel well. His energy level is low and moans like he has a tummy ache and has horrible gas. I have exhausted my excess funds for vets and am not sure what to do. I will be horrified if this crap is doing internal damage.

I took one of our pits to the vet last night. He had elevated kidney enzymes and is currently undergoing iv therapy at the animal hospital. We have fed our dogs Kirkland Signature Salmon w/ Sweet Potato (blue bag) for many years. He is almost 9 and has never had skin issues. Several months ago, Sept 29th to be exact, I had to take him to the vet because he had itchy infected bloody skin sores, losing hair in patches, rash from head to toe that he constantly scratches. Steroids and antibiotics gave him very little relief. Long story short...he has had almost every symptom mentioned in this review. I'm going to pick up some Taste of the Wild on my way home tonight. Something has changed with Costco's dog food!

After feeding my dogs for nearly 8 years on the Kirkland Chicken and Rice dog food both of my pups began to refuse to eat. Only after an overnight would the dogs eventually eat. This was highly irregular as each would almost instantaneously eat their food. Each dog suffered from bouts of diarrhea and one dog began vomiting her food minutes after eating. I stopped feeding the Kirkland Chicken and rice food and cooked plain chicken breast and rice which it began to eat regularly. My female continued to vomit and have diarrhea leading me to take her to the vet.
$700 later the vet had no answer and said nothing was wrong with her. In the interim she has been on a Prescription Diet canned food regimen. She has stopped vomiting and her stool is getting better. I plan to try Call of the Wild as it has received some of the highest reviews and has quality no grain ingredients. COSTCO readily accepted the return of the Chicken and Rice food, but the comment the associate made was both unqualified and improper. She stated that COSTCO wouldn't sell a dog food that makes your dog sick. Well, they did and it did and from the dozens of other comments in the last 30-45 days I would disagree with her statement. Hope this helps you out.

He's also had noticeable loud gurgling sounds from his stomach and gas that could knock a horse out. I have given him cooked rice and beef and he ate with vigor and when I tried to give him the dry food he picked at it and again had loud tummy noises and seemed to be off. I am disheartened and truly believed in their foods. Now I'm at a loss I won't be buy them again as I don't take chances with my kids' lives!

Our dogs have eaten Kirkland dog food for years and have been healthy and happy. In December we purchased 3 large bags of Chicken and Rice Adult dog food. All three dogs have had intermittent diarrhea and occasional vomiting. Last week after one dog had blood in her stool numerous times in one day and vomiting, we took her to the emergency vet. She was on a bland diet for a few days. In the meantime I did some research and found that this experience was not unique to my own, so I contacted Kirkland. We have since switched the dogs to another brand, and none have had diarrhea or vomiting.
Here is what Kirkland did: The initial representative said they were aware of the problem and we are welcome to bring the food back and get a refund and they would have someone contact us. A member from the veterinarian team at Kirkland contacted us and said that Consumer Affairs is not a reliable source because it is designed by attorneys to start class action lawsuits. This person looked up the bag from the production code and found that it came from their Missouri plant. He went on to say that there have not been any complaints about this batch of food. Furthermore, he explained that the Diamond did indeed change their formula; however, they did not change the Kirkland formula. He also said that the dogs could have caught essentially a doggie cold (the correct terminology escapes me), which is unrelated to the food itself.
All of which was explained could very well be true. I do not have means to see if there have been any complaints from the particular batch of dog food that I purchased. That being said common sense tells me that if something walks, looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck - it probably is a duck. I reminded the representative from the “Kirkland Veterinarian” team that: since we switched dog food, none of the dogs have had diarrhea or have been vomiting. Coincidental or not, my dogs health is not worth the risk. I am not surprised that there was not any responsibility admitted and only offered plausible deniability.

We had our dogs on NutriSource Grain Free for several years. All of our dogs were doing well, healthy coats, good looking teeth, and never sick. We shop at Costco for a few household things and someone had mentioned to us that Costco had a grain free food which is what we like to feed our dogs. Well, after looking at the package and ingredients it didn't seem to be bad food so we decided to try it out.
After a few months of the dogs being on it, we started seeing several issues. One of our dogs was limping off and on and her teeth didn't seem as healthy. Then, our other dog started getting a very inflamed rash on her belly, bad looking teeth as well, and she started getting a mass on her back leg. Didn't think it was the food at first but after seeing that the mass was getting bigger, the rash wouldn't go away and remembering that none of this occurred until we changed the dogs to the Kirkland food.
So, we decided to change them back to their old food (NutriSource) and within a few weeks the rash on her belly seemed a little better and we haven't seen the other dog have any limping issues since. We recently had the mass on our dog removed and we're waiting on the biopsy results but the vet is pretty certain it's cancer because of the way the mass was presenting itself.
To add to all of this, I was talking to my sister who had her dogs on the Kirkland brand as well and she said that one of her dogs started getting hot spots while on the food so they had to switch foods too. Then I found out that my cousin who just recently lost 2 out of 3 of her dogs to cancer had her dogs on the Kirkland food too. When I asked my cousin if her dogs had any issues prior to being on the food, she answered no and said it all started after they started the food.
My question now is how can a company keep selling this horrible food when it has such bad reviews. We just had to pay quite a chunk of money to have the mass removed, her pain meds, bandage changes until her wound has started to close (the mass was on her ankle so they could not close the wound and have to let it close on its own), and we have to keep our fingers crossed that the mass doesn't grow back. Our dogs are family! They are not here for companies to use them as science experiments and make them sick in the process! DO NOT BUY THIS FOOD!!!

We have been feeding Nature's Domain Salmon and Sweet Potato for quite some time. Last week, we opened a new bag. Three of my dogs became sick with vomiting and diarrhea. Very bad diarrhea and even with medication and fluids, my old dog died yesterday. Blood tests and numerous fecal tests, trips to the vet and a huge bill. One of my dogs has recovered and the puppy is on the mend. After trying to track this down, the food is the only thing that adds up. Pup responding to two different types of antibiotics, our old man never did.
A local feed store told us, without US telling them the brand name that 6 other customers in the area were in with similar problems in the last week and a half and looking to change foods that fed this brand. I'm devastated and so is my husband. Saving a couple dollars wasn't worth it. We thought it was TOW because the ingredients were the same except salmon vs salmon meal. I still have the food, but not the bag. Maybe, Costco Puyallup can print another receipt?

We have two 12 year old American Cocker Spaniels. We had been feeding them Kirkland brand Salmon & Sweet potato dry dog food. It came recommended as a hypoallergenic dog food since our female has many allergies and skin issues. They seemed to be fine with the food until recently. The male was the first to exhibit symptoms. Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy and a tender GI tract were what I could see immediately. After the vet put him on a gentle prescription diet he started to improve. His sister didn't start exhibiting symptoms until a couple of days later, but they were exactly the same symptoms. They are now both on easy to digest prescription foods and are (hopefully) on the mend.

After feeding my dogs with this food for over a year, without issue, our dogs have become sick. It started with our Male GSD, with dry heaving and small amounts of bile, then mucous diarrhea with blood in it. Our female Boxweiler seemed fine. Took GSD to the vet and had his stool analyzed, there were no parasites but rod shaped bacteria were present. We put him on rice chicken diet and some antibiotics he started getting better so we started reintroducing the Dog food. It was at this point that he became very sick, with soup diarrhea and refusing to eat, our female started showing symptoms at this point as well.
We are now putting them both on rice diet and going to have their stools sent off to a bigger lab that can identify the type of Bacteria, but it is suspected to be salmonella at this point. We will also contact Costco and see if they will pay for their food to be analyzed as I cannot afford all of these tests on my own. If the fecal analysis does confirm salmonella and Costco/Kirkland refuses to do an analysis on the food, I will find a way to have it analyzed on my own.

Starting in mid December after buying a new bag of this food we noticed our dogs started becoming gassy, lethargic and having digestive issues. Most affected was our Chihuahua. He seemed uncomfortable and sulky.
He was having irregular BMs and was slowly loosing his appetite. While taking him out for walk I noticed he has considerably bloody stool and immediately brought him to the vet. Upon examination, $250 and 5 medications, we concluded that he has a severe case of gastrointestinal ulcers and that it was likely caused by something he ate. After considerable research I came across many unhappy consumers with very ill pets. I am returning this food immediately and would like to urge Kirkland and Costco to pull from shelves immediately so no one else has to go through this, or worse!

By Christmas, my dog was farting the most horrid smell. We figured we must be wrong and the septic was backing up or something their way. This could be the dog. It was too rancid. Around that time he started puking yellow bile every 16 hours or so. I found this website the first week of January and was horrified by what I read. I have pleaded with every higher power in the last two weeks to please let it all be wrong.
Very rapidly my once active hyper pup became exhausted and barely looked up when the hubby came home. His tail stopped wagging some time last week. On Tuesday my dog excreted blood all over the house, Wednesday he puked blood. Thursday he perked up, ate for the first time in practically a week and even interacted with his kids. Friday morning while I drove those kids to school he died in my husband's arms.
I know there are people who doubt this claim but I know my dog, he was my everything. He ate all the things that normally kill dogs and lived to bark about it. In 11 years he was never sick. Just a few weeks ago he was running circles around my five-year-old. Our local Costco is currently looking into the situation and possibly pulling the food off the shelves at our local store. We have also filed an official claim and are waiting to hear back from Diamond Foods Inc. I offered to donate the remains so as to find a definite answer. They declined. My Dad’s dog came very close to the end, she got diarrhea and was vomiting both of which contained blood, there was even blood in her urine and was very lethargic. We had no answers, our vet did run some test and told us that her kidneys were shutting down but had no explanation as to why. My dog got all of the same symptoms about a week later except they weren't as severe.

Our puppy had a period of three weeks of diarrhea on this brand, though we are not sure whether it was caused by the food or something she picked up outdoors. I would like to point out that after a number of reviewers posted that Kirkland dog food killed their dogs in December, there were 13 5-star reviews posted for the product and asserting that any illnesses must be due to other causes on two days in mid-January. This looks suspicious to me. If the company is noticing these concerns, then I believe testing the product for contamination and publicizing the results is a more appropriate response than trying to bury bad reviews. Prior to that, you had 40 - 1 and 2 star reviews out of 43 since July 2014. I had used Kirkland's Signature foods for my dogs for nearly 2 years without issue. This December, all four of my dogs fell ill with diarrhea and vomiting. The two larger dogs and a miniature poodle recovered without veterinary intervention, but it was necessary to put my chihuahua on medication and a special diet after emergency treatment.
As soon as I changed foods, all of the dogs were once again healthy. I probably would not have suspected the food had my friend's new puppy not become very ill after eating Kirkland's dog food based on my prior recommendation. There is something terribly wrong with Kirkland dog food products and pretending like the problem isn't there is only going to make more dogs ill and die. Since Costco is not addressing the problem, I will take it upon myself to spread these reviews as well as the stories of at least three other people whom I know whose dogs got very sick with the same symptoms - and worse - while eating Kirkland dog food. I also believe that an investigation on the recent 5 star reviews should be carried out by consumeraffairs.com.

I've been feeding Kirkland dog food to my dogs since January 2009. Never have had any issue with any of the dog foods from Costco and I've tried them all over the years. Currently they're eating the Nature's Domain Grain-Free Beef Meal & Sweet Potato Formula. They never refuse their kibble and are very healthy. Their coats look amazing too.

I came across this website doing a search for calorie content of this dog food. Needless to say, I was shocked at all the horror stories of people whose pets became ill likely because of this brand of food! My two dogs (1 male Shih Tzu/Lhasa mix, 1 female Maltese/Shih Tzu mix) have been on this food for about a year now and have never had any problems. They both love the food and their stools are always firm and the same color each time. Have to say that even give this, I am concerned about continuing to use this food. Our male dog has only had an issue once with food and that was a lamb variety. He would throw up bile just about every time he ate it. That is the only issue we've ever had with dog food.

My daughter's large breed dog was eating Kirkland food made by Diamond. He had explosive gas with diarrhea. My daughter took her dog to the vet. A thousand dollars later, he continues to require a homemade diet. He may never be able to eat dog food ever again due to the damage that has been done to his intestines. With research we have found that the Kirkland Signature Lamb and Rice Dog Food has had a major recall in other states. However, one of the Costcos in the San Fernando portion of Los Angeles has denied any recall of their food. We have also learned that many dogs have died due to ingesting the Kirkland brand dog food.

I bought a bag of Kirkland lamb and rice in early December. My 3 y/o blue pit has been in the same food for a year. I didn't open it until a week before Christmas. By New Year's weekend my dog had projectile diarrhea and lost complete control of his bowels. He went on the couch and even got the walls 3 feet from where he tried to go potty. After 3 vet visits, countless medication, boiled chicken and rice diet and probiotics, they still don't have an answer as to what's wrong with him. But he has such severe damage to his intestine he cannot consume the special diet food they give to animals who have had intestinal surgery. I'm into the $1000's in vet bills. I am so scared we will lose him, especially after reading previous posts.
I filed an incident report today with Costco and am awaiting a response. I will fight for my dog and all the others who are experiencing this issue. This is my toddler's best friend. There is nothing else it could be but the food. Please pull this food.

My Rottweiler puppy is four months old and we purchased the Turkey Sweet Potato Natures Domain in January because the Kirkland puppy formula seemed to bother her skin and she was breaking out in hives (also from Diamond company) so switching thinking it was an allergy. My breeder called and told me her four adult dogs were throwing up and wouldn't eat any more of this. My puppy is in agony with blisters on her stomach, and rear end and on one of her teats. She is flea protected and indoors most of the time in a very good environment. It is a reaction to this food, and upon reading all of the comments, I am afraid my puppy is contaminated.
Called Costco and the response was that there couldn't be anything wrong and that they are always on top of things like this. Canned response. Years ago Costco used to be a consumer advocate, now they simply won't listen to all of us. What a shame my youngster is having to go through this. I have her on Acana now. No more corporate imported tainted secretive stuff for my pets.

We have been using Kirkland dog food for about five years. We raise smaller dogs. They seem to eat the food well and the ingredients were what we wanted for healthy dogs. We have been treating our dogs a lot for stomach problems over this period of time. Now we have dogs that are only four and five years old that are not able to breed. We cannot prove it is the dog food but will be changing to another brand hoping to resolve our problems. We have recommended Kirkland dog food to many people because the dogs like it and it has the right ingredients in it but if it isn't healthy we will be letting them know as soon as we know for sure.

My dogs were not feeling well. Drink too much water. Even drinking from the bathroom. I notice they won't eat their food. They were bloated, gassy, lethargic, and no energy. Only thing my dogs eat was the Nature's Domain and Costco treats. Slowly, I took away the treats, then the food. A day later my dogs were up and about.
I've been buying this brand for 4 years. The last three months something went wrong. When I saw the complaints online, I returned what I had left. While I was there I asked the cashier about it. Didn't seem to know why or got any info. Filed a complaint with Costco and yet no one responded! I'm contacting Diamond the maker of the dog food next. I felt lucky my dogs weren't dead! Feel bad for everyone else who lost their dog & ended up with a big vet bill. My question is why are we paying the big $$$$$ Corporations to make our Dogs their lab-rat to experiment on???

We have been feeding our dogs Kirkland's Nature's Domain food for about 2 years. They have thrived on it until late November. I did not realize the possible connection until I saw a post from a friend. Our 3 dogs have been eating the Salmon formula (blue bag). A week before Thanksgiving our 12-year old Pointer started losing weight and refusing to eat. He was shivering all the time and vomiting. Bloody stools. He then had a massive seizure (which he has had in the past) that rendered him unable to walk. He slept all day and would only eat bits of peanut butter. We actually took him to the vet to put him down right before Thanksgiving, but got an IV when he perked up a bit in the vet's office.
Three weeks of what we considered hospice care with tiny bits of food and he finally rallied when we fed him some wet food. We almost lost him and all of the symptoms point to the food. My only concern is why my other dogs did not get sick? He is susceptible to being more prone to issues due to being pure bred (our other two are healthy mutts) and his issues with seizures. I hope Kirkland is watching these reviews and will recall just in case.

I switched from EVO to Kirkland brand dry dog food (lamb and rice formula) about 3 years ago for my 2 dogs. I have a Shepherd mix (Peace) and a lab/GSP (Luv) mix. In late November/early December 2014 my dogs started having diarrhea. I searched for a cause but could find any, after using rice and pumpkin my smaller (35lb) Shepherd mix (Peace) started doing well. It took love another weeks and some stool hardener for him to get better. During this time they both threw up 2+ times but it was so spread apart I did not think anything of it. His (Luv) stool was soft but did not have blood (I called the vet and was told I didn't have to come in).
I bought my LAST BAG OF KIRKLAND LAMB AND RICE DECEMBER 2014 from google shopping express. January 16th 2pm (PST) I learned about the incidents with the formula. I stopped feeding my dogs Kirkland Lamb and Rice Dry Dog Food that evening. The next day I was outside with Peace dog and came in to find my lab mix (Luv 70lb) rolling on the floor, after he'd urinated (like a seizure) he was stiff unaware and looked frightened.
I called the vet and carried him to the car and drove to the ER (in the car he had 1 maybe 2 episodes). Within 2 hours he had 4 more episodes, thankfully the vet was present for some of them. His eyes were looking up, he could not stand. The Vet said it did not look like a seizure since his eyes weren't going side to side, rather up and down. Could been a brain tumor, epilepsy, or other neurological disorders. She's never seen anything like it with especially since he was 5 with no prior history of this. I was told to expect the worse as he wasn't taking to any anti-convulsion medication, could not stand, was throwing up.
After the vet patiently explained the possibilities I said goodbye to Luv and went home. Thankfully he made it through the night under the watchful eyes of the amazing staff and Campbell CA Animal ER. This morning he was able to stand and with a powerful med hasn't had an episode since 9pm. He is on this med indefinitely every 12 hours. I strongly believe that his food had something to do with it as both my dogs started vomiting infrequently after my November purchase. There are no other variables that I haven't considered.
I'm contacting Kirkland and Costco to ensure no one has to go through this. Our pets are family and losing one because of bad food is unacceptable. I'm happy my dog is alive and do not want anyone else to go through this. What I'm asking is that they test and recall this batch.

Natures Domain Dog Food - We began feeding this food to my dog several months ago (turkey and sweet potato, red bag). We purchased a bag in December 2014. Over the course of a few days, he became more and more reluctant to eat it. After a week or so, my dog refused to eat it. Thinking he was just being picky, I waited several hours and tried feeding it to him again. By this time he was hungry enough to eat about half of his normal portion before he refused any more. In a few hours he vomited and became very lethargic; obviously in distress! As it was nighttime I let him sleep that night. The next morning I fed him other food, which he readily ate and appeared to feel better and act more normal. That evening I attempted to feed him the Costco food and he vigorously refused it!
This lead me to believe there was a problem with the food. I have switched brands and he is completely back to normal. I have since read many similar reports from dog owners about the Nature Domain product, some with far more serious results. I understand there has been no recall but seriously urge some investigation.

I did some research on two websites that rated dog food strictly on ingredients. Kirkland brand earned 4 stars so I tried it because one of my dogs has always had stool that was not quite firm. Her vet could never find anything medically wrong with her. Ever since we switched, her stool has been perfectly normal. I feed three of my four dogs the Kirkland brand for dogs over 7 years old. The fourth one is on a prescription diet for bladder stones. I don't know that I would blame a dog food for any health issues or a death without a necropsy or extensive vet intervention to rule out a heath issue. I for one am very satisfied with this brand.

We thought she might be sick but it has gotten progressively worse and today she barely even got up, and is refusing to eat her dog food but happily ate a sweet potato in place of her food.
After doing some research online, it appears that Costco's dog food could be the cause of this. I am going to try to come up with some money to take her to the vet. In addition I will begin making her dog food at home in attempt to help her recover from the damage caused by Costco's Kirkland brand dog food. What I don't understand is how or why Costco has not taken this off their shelves and recalled. I'm now a bit concerned about their other products.

His teeth are also in excellent shape. After we began this food he was able to go off the steroids for his skin problems. It also cleared up our apbt skin problems. I have avoided Nature's Domain because it is made by Diamond, which has had recalls. But when they offered an organic formula, I bought it. My dogs began having dull eyes, low energy, and allover lethargy, so I threw it away. After reading about what really goes into pet food, I will only feed my animals HUMAN GRADE food. God knows what kinds of contaminants may end up on my kitchen counters from the standardized garbage we are charged money for! We need to educate ourselves!
As it stands, federal law says ‘food’ means articles consumed by man or other animals and it is forbidden for any food to contain any part of a diseased animal or an animal that has died other than by slaughter. Except… pet food. The FDA says diseased animals or animals that are euthanized or have died in the field are acceptable for use in pet food... And by the way - each and every State Department of Agriculture (state government) are also masters at enforcement discretion. Each state could enforce federal food safety laws as they are written, but each choose not to. The law is the law for any of us - but the law is subject to ‘enforcement discretion’ with FDA and each State Department of Agriculture.

Over $5,000 later and with no real diagnosis other than severe hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (which is basically a bad stomach infection). She has never had a problem with this food. When she was a puppy she was very sensitive to products containing chicken and would get diarrhea. We have heard from many owners of golden retrievers that this is a common issue. Our vet looked at and approved the Kirkland brand when we were looking for a good food for our baby.
However, the reviews here are quite disturbing so I just called Kirkland Pet customer service at 1-800-797-9607. They reassured me that every batch of their dog food is Made in the USA (which they really should put clearly on the bag) and that each batch is tested by on site vets for quality control. They do NOT have any food recalls. I personally, don't believe Costco would be stupid enough to have a product on it's shelves that is killing pets. That would be business suicide. Costco, I hope you continue to be extremely diligent with your testing and quality control so we can all rest assured that our pets will not get sick or die AND that they will be very healthy and thrive with your food!

I am a 30+ year Great Dane competitor, occasional breeder, and multiple dog owner. Right now we share our lives with two wonderful male Dane -- call names are Boss and J. Khol. I formerly fed Diamond and made the logical switch to Kirkland (I feed Healthy Weight). We also supplement with raw veggies and meat with bones, plus enzymes and probiotics (these are just something that I came up with that works for my animals -- I am not a doctor or nutritionist - so, I will not do any specific listing of what I use.)
I am so sorry that so many of you have had such devastating experiences. I do read reviews all the time -- even when I am happy with my products; just because of company changes, formulas changes, etc. I did check here because one bag of food we bought during that period did just smell 'off' when I opened it. The other 4 or 5 bags we bought at the same time were just fine. I returned the one bag and did not think of it again until I read the experiences here.
All I can say is over the years with animals you will all, I am sure, get to a point where your 'gut' just tells you something is right or wrong. I always trust my gut feelings -- I may be returning a lot of perfectly good food - but I am having good luck doing that. It makes my family laugh to see me stick my whole face into a newly opened bag of dogs food to get a good smell. I started this probably more than 20 years ago when you used to run into rancid bags of food all the time (And worms and every kind of rodent leavings). So, when you find the next food and you are feeling really good about it -- memorize the right smell -- then, if it's off, you will know right away.
My other word of advice to all animal owners. Measure your dogs food, don't let your friends share bowls, never 'free feed' and let them only have their food for a defined amount of time. My dogs get an exact amount at 8:00am and 4:00pm. They have 10 minutes to eat it. If they have not eaten it, I take it away. This does not give them time to get lazy --- and I know that if they don't eat enough in two meals, there is something wrong and we ring the vet. Good luck all.

Well after a week after our Golden Retriever threw up twice, and had massive diarrhea, lethargic and dehydrated we couldn't figure what was going on. Then these reviews started posting on Facebook. DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT. We didn't have the huge vet bills that other folks had because he did refuse to eat that we caught the problem early. We are taking this back and we will NEVER buy or have confidence in Diamond food/Costco Dog Food products again.

I've been feeding my dog Kirkland's Chicken & Rice (the blue bag) for years, without problem. December, I opened a new bag, and almost immediately my dog got sick. Symptoms were: severe diarrhea and at one point, vomiting. The worst diarrhea I've ever seen. He got a vet visit where he got some subq to get fluids back in him (he was refusing water at this point), and when he started to recover on bland food - rice and chicken - I tried to transition him back onto his kibble very slowly. Got him to about 50/50 ratio, and he got diarrhea again. The vet and I initially figured it was rabbit or deer poop, even though nothing showed up on the fecal or bloodwork. So we treated him with metronidazole. And again, he recovered nicely on bland food. Tried transitioning him onto kibble, and...surprise. Severe diarrhea. Back to the vet. This time we tested his bloodwork for any underlying issues.
The lab results came back with extremely high liver values. However, the other typical symptoms that accompanies liver or pancreatic diseases were absent. An acquaintance of mine pointed me toward this website, and...well, right now I'm researching other food options. Now, I'm not saying that the Kirkland food is The Definite Cause for the diarrhea and liver values, but it's mightily suspicious. On the off chance that legal action is taken, so far I've spent about $600 on vet visits, medications, and prescription food.

I have read a few of the reviews here and I have to say that a couple of the experiences mirror my own so much that it is shocking. We have been feeding our 8 year old dog Nature's Domain (turkey) for almost a year without any problems. We purchased another bag in late November (also echoes other people). A week and a half before Christmas she started peeing in the house and she had low energy. We took her to the vet the Friday before Christmas 2014 and the vet first thought it was incontinence. The medication given for that was not right and made her sicker. She wasn't eating.
The vet had us come in for a blood draw. It was inconclusive but the vet talked to an internist at the lab who suggested our dog might have an infection so we started her on doxycycline. On our last day of that she started vomiting mucus and possibly blood. We took her to a different vet who treated her with medication to soothe her symptoms and put her on a bland canned diet for a week. She has been on that for almost two weeks now and her symptoms seem to have dissipated entirely.
The second vet felt around our dog's abdomen really well and our dog was definitely sore but we weren't sure if there was an obstruction or if maybe it was pancreatitis. We have not gotten her an ultrasound or x-ray (I figured I'd do that if her symptoms came back after the stomach meds and bland diet). Our dog seems to be doing better now. I have a bag of the Nature's Domain that is about 2/3 full and I will be returning that to Costco today. I'm not certain it's the food that has caused these issues but after what we went through and reading what other people have gone through I am not going to risk it. Thank you to everyone who has reviewed.

I DO NOT recommend purchasing dog or cat food from Costco - Kirkland Brand. About 2 years ago I feed my dog this and got a phone call from "Diamond Pet Food" brand that there was a salmonella recall on the dog food. My pup got very sick, had to stay at the vet on fluids for almost a week! I wish I had taken legal action when it happened because the vet bill was over $1,000 and I racked up my "Care Credit Card." I am now signed up for "Dog Food Advisors" alerts via email. This helps to "Stay in the Know" of any recalls for dog food or treats.

I have 4 Labs and have been feeding them Kirkland's Healthy Weight for about 3 yrs. with no problems. I just recently switched to Nature's Domain and the only thing I noticed with one of my dogs is she is always thirsty. No diarrhea or vomiting but after reading all the complains I'm taking back the remaining bag and buying a different brand.

I am only writing on this subject because a relative sent this review after we lost four dogs in four months, knowing as she did that we shop at Costco. The first one was Feathers, whose death was considered due exclusively to old age, although after the loss of the others, we are now unsure. She was taken to the vet on 10/8/14 and we were told she should be put down. She was diagnosed with renal failure, etc.
Freckles, one of three brothers that were 14 years old, suddenly stopped eating. He grew thinner and thinner, but would still take treats. The treats we gave them most were the Kirkland chicken and rice and lamb and rice biscuits. We had never had a problem before, so we figured this was a good buy. Eventually, when he began lying down more than usual, and he appeared to be getting worse, we took him to the vet. They determined it was his age causing this, but having bred dogs for many years, I had experienced dogs getting old and eventually dying. Freckles could chase our car at 35 MPH down our road (we live in a remote area) and did so three weeks before they said he had all forms of cancer and should be put down. That was heartbreaking because he had never had time to grow old and slow at all. He died on 11/15/14.
Brows, one we called the Gentle Giant, actually tried to play with Freckles before we took him in, showing alertness and the same nature as always. After that day, and while we noticed him watching for his brother's return, we also began to notice him staggering at the back legs. He was obviously walking strangely, with more labor than usual, and began drinking water profusely. He urinated a lot now, drinking lots of water at least every hour. Finally, he was walking up the steps of the front deck and struggled, then he fell. He couldn't get up, so we helped him. He came into an enclosed side porch and collapsed there, all four legs splayed. Eventually, he did get up and came into the living room, went behind my chair and dropped. He remained there, unable to move anymore, and we began giving him water with a turkey baster. Finally, he stopped swallowing the water and only moved his eyes when we walked past him. His breathing was very deep. In fact, it was when that audible breathing stopped that alerted me. I looked back and he had died. This was on 12/31/14.
Huggums, the last of the brothers, was one that lived with three legs after a hunter had shot him when he was quite young. He was still healthy while we were losing the others, but suddenly began to grow thinner, just like Freckles. He did try to eat, but nothing dry. I began giving him and the other remaining dog, their mother, canned food, hoping to put some weight back on this one. He did eat with gusto at first. He would eat some snacks as well, which all the dogs got on a regular basis. But, instead of gaining weight, he continued to grow thinner and thinner, until I awoke some days ago and found stool all over the place. There was much more than a dog would normally pass at one time. He was able to get himself over to a pad where he could rest, then remained there. After awhile, I heard him retching, so I went over to him. He began vomiting a very slimy mixture, filled with undigested snacks, and this was also in a great amount.
We had to go to the store afterwards, and when we got back home, he was lying next to my computer table, his head on a leg of it, and he lifted his head to see us come in. My lady friend slid him onto a nice pad because he had been having more and more difficulties hopping on his singular front leg. His back legs had been growing extremely weak, wobbling as he tried to bounce his front up in his usual form of ambulation. Finally, within an hour or so, he was unable to move, only lifting his head to look back at me, then letting it drop back down. We made sure he was lying in a comfortable position, then we went to bed. When my lady friend got up sometime later, she found that he had already died. We've had hard freezes for some days, so we couldn't bury him for a while, but just did so today. He died on 1/8/15.
These deaths all occurred so quickly that we had to expect that they were poisoned. The vet always talks about their ages, all being 14, but I have never seen any brothers, whether human or dog, each die a month apart. There were no signs of aging as yet, with the exception of the unrelated Feathers, which had the gray face and showed all the usual signs of it. The others never did slow down in any way until their final days, which adds to our suspicions. I might also add that when Freckles, the first brother, started getting sick, all the dogs were refusing the Kirkland biscuits, which they had eagerly taken all the other times they were offered.

Sick dog- unable to explain behaviors, only fed this product for years and years. Never an issue until early dec. 2014. I started research and I come up with umpteen other dogs deathly Ill. And some have already lost their lives and must be somewhat similar instances. Can we get them to show if they've changed recipe or products verification of what is actually in the food. I'm so sad and confused.

I have been feeding my Husky/Malamute the Salmon Blend Kirkland dog for 2 years now. She is incredibly healthy. Her fur shines, lots of energy, and she is more satisfied after eating than other dog food brands. The ingredients are fantastic along with the price! I highly recommend it!

I have always used the Kirkland brand canned dog food and have been satisfied. When all the canned dog food cans I had been using were gone, I was told by a stocking clerk that the Turkey and Pea canned was now the only brand they will be carrying. I bought two cases. In trying the first case I noticed an opening the can - it is like jelly inside with just tiny diced meat (??) in it. I gave it to my dog and the next day noticed his stool was exactly like jelly, and looked like the jelly in the can. When I tried to scoop it up, it "RAN" off the shovel. This continued as long as I fed him the same canned product. Then, the vomiting started. I returned the unused case to Costco and lodged a complaint. My money was refunded. I will not use the Kirkland Brand dog food anymore. I switched my dog to Alpo and his stool is back to normal and no vomiting. They retained the receipt. This was at the Kalispell, Montana store.

I am switching, gradually, from Iams Senior to the Organic Grain Free Kirkland dog food. It has been about a week and they seem to love it and I have seen no adverse reactions. I am shocked about this. Maybe the problem is with another brand of Kirkland food.

I had been buying Kirkland salmon yams dry dog food for my English Mastiff for 4 yrs. from ALB Costco. Oct.18, 2014 she got sick and 2 days after she would not even drink any water. My Vet is in E. Tx. where I take her each Jan. for annual exam. Was forced to go to a new Vet here in Santa Fe. She tested her for pancreatitis by blood test. Gave her 1000mg. IV fluid. Gave her 2 kinds of medicines for 5 days... to feed only their canned food for GI issues. To reintroduce her food. Just gave her 1/4th cup instead of 2 cups! Bile came up, her eyes dark, hair falling out, was listless, gagged several times as if something stuck in her throat. Stayed in bed - lost 15/20lbs.
Back to the Vet Oct.23 - more medicine, told to stay on the GI food. Contacted breeder - suggested another food using small amount of canned food - stop - stay on new food. I spent $302/$163 Vet bills plus the canned food for 8 weeks. Will be seeing her Vet by end of month. He will test - examine her to see if there is any GI problems that are permanent? Or if it caused her to develop something in the future. She is ALL I have in this world. Is 90% trained service dog! I have had 26 dogs at one time E. Tx never had a sick dog. Was 5 generations Cocker Spaniels buried on my property. If I get any bad news from My Vet who went to Tx. A&M '88! I will take action! Something poisonous was in the bag!!

I have been a loyal customer of Costco for several years and have never had a problem with the Kirkland brand. When the we got our Australian Shepherd puppy the breeder and several friends recommended Kirkland brand puppy and dog food. Our dog was on it since she was 8 weeks old and is now 1 1/2 years. All of a sudden in November, she came down with intermittent bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and lethargy. Since it would come and go, we thought she was just getting into something outside she wasn't supposed to be in but it continued to get worse. We took her to the vet and they placed her on probiotics, antacid and to see if it corrects the symptoms.
We are on day two of the therapy when I ran across these complaints. There is not a doubt in my mind that it is caused from Kirkland brand dog food. Now when I look back the symptoms started around the same time we purchased a new bag of food. Costco had a doctor call me today when I placed my complaint and I got the run around saying they have only had 6 actual complaints where customers have contacted them and all complaints were unfounded. I am disappointed how this is being handled by Costco and am anticipating a recall soon. Our dog was switched to Blue brand food and will not be getting Kirkland brand again in the future.

I have been using Natures Domain for at least 3 years and in the last year each I switched to the fish/sweet potato. My older dog gets urine issues. Last spring he ended up with a severe bladder infection. This time he started having incontinence issues so I immediately switched him back to the turkey/sweet potato and took him into the vet. His incontinence is cleared up and he didn't get an infection. I will never use the fish/sweet potato and I'm considering not using Diamond products at all. Costco was wonderful about taking my 3/4 bag as a full refund return. Thank you Costco. I hope you are tracking returns and issues. Thank you!

All these reports on the dog food being bad has got me worried now. I have been feeding the Kirkland small breed dry food for several years now and have never had a problem. But now I'm wondering if I should pull the food away from my dogs and go and get them some other kind of food. I don't want them to get sick.
