I found a flea on my 5 year old, 12 pound, perfectly healthy, indoor tabby cat Dunkin. I have a 1 year old daughter so for the sake of saving time and money I ran to Target and bought the Hartz Ultraguard Plus Topical Flea & Tick. WOW... I learned my lesson about cutting corners! I applied the product as instructed and the smell alone almost killed me. My whole house smelled like nail polish remover... I had to open the windows and everything! The product spread across Dunkin's shoulders and he started itching and loudly crying and hissing and panting and drooling and jumping around like his tail was on fire. I was literally scared of him... and scared for him! I suspected he got some in his mouth and assumed that the fumes were panicking him and waited about 25 minutes before calling the vet.

The first thing they asked was "did you use Hartz?" Omg! Yes! Why is this product on the shelves?? They advised me to bathe him in Dawn to get the product off his skin. Did I mention I have a 1 year old AND I'm pregnant?! Bathing a cat doesn't fit well into my day! Upon washing him fleas were jumping off of him into the tub... alive. This product supposedly kills fleas within 15 minutes but they were still alive and well. He calmed down after the bath but was clearly traumatized and STILL HAD FLEAS. I had to take him to the vet that afternoon & have an oral flea prevention administered which cost me $150 with the exam and meds & a different topical to be applied the next morning. He seems okay now but this was the most outlandish experience and I strongly advise avoiding all Hartz products!!!!

I must add I have an indoor, 10 pound mini dachshund & I put the Hartz Ultraguard Pro Triple Action for dogs on her at the same time as I did Dunkin. She seems okay but after reading these reviews I'm worried. The vet gave me a free dose of NexGard for her. I'm going to keep a close eye on her movement and eating due to the delayed reaction I've read some dogs have. Do NOT use these products!!! Hartz should be ashamed!!!!

Our 16 yr old cat wasn't feeling well a month after we got a puppy. She is an indoor/outdoor cat and at age 16 we knew she was going to begin showing signs of being elderly at some point. We discovered she was covered in fleas (never ever had a flea issue before we got the dog) so there was the problem. I purchased some OTC flea drops (not Hartz!) but also picked up Hartz Ultraguard Flea & Tick Spray for Cats to give her immediate relief and planned on applying the drops the next day. After application, within a few minutes she was foaming at the mouth and vomiting. We figured she just licked some of the product. We comforted her and thought all would be well.

I have been in the pest control industry since the late 80s and I usually pay attention to ingredients in these things. My eyes aren't as good as they once were and I could not make out the active ingredient in this Hartz product. I could tell I did not recognize the ingredient but figured it'll be alright. They stopped using things like Dursban in flea control products (collars, sprays, etc) years ago. In the mid 90s we had an issue with Dursban-laced flea collar for a dog. It made her sick and lethargic and discontinued its use. Here it is 20 years later and never in my life imagined organophosphates were still being used in a flea spray. Turns out the active ingredient in Hartz Ultraguard Plus is Tetrachlorovinphos... an ORGANOPHOSPHATE!

I discovered this several days later after our cat was pretty much on her death bed. We kept vigil the whole weekend, and did not even expect her to make it through the night on Saturday. We just attributed it to her simply being an old lady. The fleas were under control but she was just finally ready to move on. We mourned her loss that weekend, even though she was still alive. We not for a minute made the connection between the flea spray and her flirtation with death.

For a week she refused to come inside for the night as she always did. She chose to sleep in the drainage ditch along the road in front of the house. We checked on her several times every night, and had to physically walk up to her and touch her to make sure she was still breathing. We were surprised she was still holding on but expected her to die at any time... but slowly she regained her appetite and would come up to the house to eat every morning... then go back to the "bed" she made for herself in the ditch.

I happened to notice the bottle of Hartz spray on my desk and I looked at the active ingredient then Googled it. To my horror I see that it is an organophosphate and immediately recall 20 years earlier the problems we had with our dog and organophosphates... plus being in the pest control business I am aware of the dangers and symptoms. I myself have had acute organophosphate poisoning so I know how it makes you feel... sick, lethargic, nauseous, etc.

I rush out to get my cat and bring her inside for a bath. It has been a week by this time since we applied the product but I knew it couldn't hurt. She was already slowly recovering but the bath (although not pleasant at first!) was refreshing for her by later in the day. It took her about a month, but I am glad to say our 16 year old furry kiddo is back to normal. I felt so guilty and stupid for not making the connection sooner. Given so many other alternatives, I do not understand why Hartz is using Tetrachlorvinphos (I REPEAT, IT'S AN ORGANOPHOSPHATE!) in their flea spray. It's not like it's a rare adverse reaction. It's common... this stuff is just plain TOXIC.

Purchased this as a last resort as I ran out of my monthly preventative. Big mistake. Both of my shih tzus are acting lethargic and the fleas have not subsided even after bathing them with flea shampoo 2 days after applying the topical poison AND fumigating my apartment. I fear of deeper medical concerns and will bring them to my vet. My male dog has developed severe dandruff and skin irritation and I believe it is from the topical gel also. This product needs to be removed.

My pets caught a few fleas from interacting with another dog. So instead of using the usual natural flea tick products I bought Hartz flea/tick oatmeal shampoo. An hour or less after I used the product on them they became sick and weak. One was heaving & walking crooked tripping over his back feet, the other weak and vomited all night and half the next day. Once I noticed their strange reactions I looked online for side effects of Hartz products and found many pets had similar and worse reactions and in one comment I read a vet gave a dog 3 baths to wash the product off, so that's what I did - I bathe my pets again but this time I used regular shampoo. (Also - with the regular shampoo is when the fleas died and came off then in the water, the Hartz did not even work to rid any of the fleas they caught.)

One of my pups stopped vomiting - but is still weak. The other started to vomit less violently and less frequently. Both are still weak, laying around with no appetite to eat which is so unusual for them. They are always normally before this incident - happy, healthy, hyper pups with great appetites. I stayed home all day canceling work and errands to watch them - I was afraid to leave my pups home alone and so sick. After a couple baths they feel a bit better, but still not %100 themselves.

Right now it's been 24 hours since I mistakenly applied that Hartz poison product to my pets and they still haven't eaten anything and one pup is still walking crooked, not as much, but he's not walking straight and it's noticeable. All Hartz products should be discontinued, I noticed it has been by Petco, but the entire Hartz production should be shut down. Seems they do not care about the welfare of animals and to be cheap will produce products that may be fatal to pets and possibly people also.

Used the drops and that night my chihuahua Pepe was acting strange and moving very slowly and didn't want to eat. The next day, he remained the same. He wanted me to hold him and sleep. Cried when I held him. Still not eating. Thought I put the medicine on wrong so I checked out the reviews and saw these posts and immediately put him in the sink and washed him. And then washed my other dog Chulo. I have Pepe in my lap shaking. I dried him with towels and the blow drier. He's still shaking and sad and I'm angry and scared for him! I hope the shower worked.... Guess time will tell.

I bought this product for my outdoor cat. She does come in the garage and sometimes in the house, but most of the time outside. So I decided to buy a cheaper product to save some money. Well, it stunk like hell!! For 2 days she smelled like it. Soon as I put it on her she starting crying, loud like almost a scream when they're in their carriers and they know they're going to the vet, then she started to act funny, weird jumps and twitching. Loss of appetite for 3 days, even her treat she hears that bag from miles away it's like her "crack" (temptations) she wouldn't touch them! And now about 5 days later she still doesn't seem herself, her eyes are very off. So after all this she still has fleas! My husband found 3 big ones on her today on her white belly! This stuff is the worst, I'm lucky she's alive. Do not buy!! This company should really take it off the shelves.

I'm hoping you read this before it's too late.. I wish I would've researched Hartz brand before applying this on my cat.. August 3rd at 9:00 p.m. I had applied (1.8 oz) one applicator of Hartz Ultra Guard Plus for cats and kittens 12 weeks and older, on my cat Maddox. I applied it on the back of his neck at the base of his skull, as directed on the box. Just to mention, Maddox is a healthy one and a half year old, short-haired, gray tabby weighing 10-12 lbs and is not taking any other medication. Every morning Maddox wakes me up around 7 a.m. to eat. However, on August 4th Maddox did not wake up to eat. He was still sleeping around 9:30 a.m. which is not normal of him. I picked him up, placed him near his food bowl and offered him his canned wet food, which he loves and showed no interest whatsoever.

As he walked back to his bed, I noticed he was limping. This is when I knew the Hartz flea medication that I had applied to him Monday night must be the cause of his strange behavior. I immediately grabbed the box and read "if signs of sensitivity occur, bathe your pet with mild soap and rinse with large amounts of water." I did exactly that. I bathed Maddox with dawn soap and large amounts of water, hoping this would wash the Hartz product away so he would feel better.

I called 1-800-275-1414 for emergency medical treatment information (on the back of the box). I spoke to a vet assistant as to why he might be experiencing these symptoms of loss of appetite, lethargy, weakness, and limping. She had explained the ingredients in the Hartz applicators are pyrethroid (synthetic pesticides) based and informed me to take Maddox to the vet if side effects continue because if the bath did not help, then it could be neurological instead of just a skin reaction. She also explained he may have a loss of appetite due to "an upset stomach" from the drops. She also explained the reason for limping is, he may be experimenting "paresthesia" which is why he might be avoiding having to walk on all fours. She described it as "the feeling of when your feet fall asleep". She told me it is still too early to tell if it's neurological or not.

Well Maddox continued to rest all of Tuesday. He still did not show interest in eating or drinking. I was hoping he would be better by the evening. Maddox got up from his bed and tried to stretch. As he went to stretch, he almost lost his balance because his legs were so weak and his balance seemed off. He seemed to be getting worse. He then hid under the couch and slept there for the night. On Wednesday, August 5th, I called Maddox out from under the couch. It was still hard for him to walk. I offered him canned wet food and water, and he still was not interested. As he sat there, I noticed he was shivering and kind of swaying side to side. I took Maddox to my veterinarian. I was in fear of my cat's well-being and most importantly his life. I was seen by the veterinary assistant first to ask me questions for my visit. I had mentioned I applied flea/tick medication to my cat and right away she questioned "HARTZ?", I confirmed.

The doctor did agree there are definitely signs of pyrethroid poisoning and advised to leave Maddox for 24 hours for iv/fluid treatment along with blood test, medicated bath, etc. On Thursday, August 6th I called my vet to see if Maddox was ready to be picked up. The doctor recommended I have him stay another 24 hours with iv/fluids to completely flush out the toxic product. I am disgusted by this company and all of Hartz products should be taken off the market. So many animals are dying or being hospitalized. $400.00 later luckily my baby pulled through and is home and ALIVE! I will definitely spread the word and make sure everyone I know, knows about Hartz products and their toxic effect on animals!

I have a 2 and a half year old female dog (Spaniel/Poodle mix). I applied the above solution to my dog's back prior to a camping trip. 8 days after application she went to a groomer which usually cuts her hair very short. Groomer discovered a bump on her back in between shoulder blades. Once I got her home I searched her entire body to see if there were more of those bumps And I found two more at the bottom of her back near the tail. Solution's application starts between shoulder blades and ends by the tail.

At first I did not what these bumps were but putting two and two together that is the only thing it can be. They are exactly where solution was applied and prior to application of this solution they were not there. Bumps are not itchy or sore but are concerning me. Not sure if they will need to be excised. I will never use this product ever again and will tell everyone I can about my experience. I am also returning the remainder of the product to PetSmart where I bought it.

48 hours ago I applied this crappy medicine to my cat. The next day she seemed a little lethargic but I just thought it was because it's hot. I woke up this morning and I went downstairs and I thought my cat was dead lying on the kitchen table. Her tongue was hanging out, it look like she had vomit on her face. She was biting her tongue, salivating, and her body mass shrunk considerably. I washed poison off her and rushed her to vet. She has tremors and not eating or drinking.

I decided to try out Hartz on my pets about a month ago because the flea drops we had been using for them simply were not working. I woke up two mornings later to find my cat's muscles twitching, like she was having spasms. Horrified, I took her straight to an emergency vet clinic, where they were thankfully able to treat my cat for the low, low price of almost $800 (by the time everything was over and taken care of, this included two overnight stays at the clinic as well as emergency treatment to prevent damage to her muscles or other vital organs). She was fortunate enough to survive the experience but my dog, who had initially shown no reaction to the treatment, had to be put down after she started limping and, eventually, lost so much strength that we had to start hand-feeding her because she physically could not walk to her bowl.

The vet stated that all of this had been caused by a negative reaction to the Hartz flea treatment. When I brought my cat back for a check-up a week later, the receptionist mentioned that, just in the year she had worked there, she had witnessed three chihuahuas die because of this product--it is simply too strong for use on smaller animals.

If you are looking for affordable flea medication for your cat or dog, please see your veterinarian for suggestions. It is more expensive to get a prescription for flea treatments from your vet, but it could save you a good deal of money on more serious vet bills down the line. Over the counter flea treatments are cheaper because they are not held to the same standards and regulations as prescription treatments--which is how products like Hartz are still around, despite poisoning and even killing some of the animals who have been exposed to it. If you do choose to use over-the-counter flea treatments, my advice is to stay away from Hartz products, especially if you own smaller animals. This is an awful product and an awful company.

I wanted my cat Smokey to be able to go outside. So since I couldn't afford ADVANTAGE at this time, I looked at the HARTZ UltraGuard Plus Topical Flea and Tick treatment. Well-BIG lesson learned which could have killed my beautiful cat daughter! After I applied the treatment on my cats' neck, she was okay for about an hour. And then, all of a sudden she started going absolutely crazy, frantic, and scratching, scratching! I started to really panic and called the emergency vet since it was Sunday evening and told them what was happening with Smokey. They told me to try applying DAWN dish detergent with lots of water to rinse her fur, or they said that my Palmolive would work since that was all I had in the house. So I started bathing her scrubbing and scrubbing her fur with the soap and using tons of water to get it off her fur. And poor thing was crying the whole time - I felt so bad as well as scared to death!

My sister who really knows and understands cats as she's had several, told me to dry Smokey off with a nice soft towel, which I did. She liked that, but was still VERY uneasy, nervous, scratching and running from room to room. I called the emergency vet back, and they said as long as she was not worse, just to watch her. And I did off and on all night. In the middle of the night when I checked on her, she settled down finally and was on her kitty rug, finally relaxed. I was relieved-but still wary of something else happening to her. Now the next morning, she was fine and like her old self. Thank goodness to God. But I am going to keep an eye on her for the next few days hoping it continues! So I am telling all of you out there with a cat or dog, PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT! I am also going report this to HARTZ!

Our 10 y/o Llewellin and our 5-year old puggle had some fleas last week so we bathed them in oatmeal shampoo, let them dry, and applied the Hartz in the proper doses for their weight ranges. The next day the Llewellin was limping on his front leg when he walked but he could run just fine. I checked his feet and legs and found no obvious issues so I attributed it to his age.

The following day it took me forever to get our puggle down the steps for her morning business and I wound up having to carry her up. Her nose was cold and she'd eat what I gave her. Her movements were normal and not runny. Her urine was the normal amount and color. So I figured she'd hurt herself a bit running around. Over the next 24 hours she wouldn't get out of our bed and I had to hand feed her and give her ice cubes for hydration. Fortunately we've got vet friends and they told us to watch her during that period. They've both snapped out of it and are back to being their normal knucklehead selves but from reading other posts on here, I feel we dodged a major bullet. We will NOT be using Hartz products again.

Hartz Ultra Guard Pro - I had to put my dog down yesterday because she could not walk anymore. She was perfectly fine just a couple of weeks ago. I have been racking my brain to figure out what could have cause her to become so debilitated so quickly. Today I was cleaning out a cabinet and remembered that I had treated my dog with the product just a day or so before she started having issues. I was horrified when I got online and found that other people have had the same issues and even more horrified to find out that a simple bath could have saved her. I will be haunted by this for a long time, and I will be seeking legal action against this company for pain and suffering.

This is the second time this has happened. It happens a few days after the flea drop application and so we now finally realize what caused it the first time. My little Coton acts paralyzed and can't even bend down to eat or drink if sitting upright even after eleven days. She sleeps continually. I am hand feeding her every bite and carrying her out to go to the bathroom. She has trouble peeing. She was bleeding from her rectum after she refused to eat for a couple days. I started hand feeding her. She can't even scratch a flea. This product is not for smaller framed dogs. I also have a Lhasa Apso and a Shih tzu in the family and I have been applying the product too and they don't have a problem.

Hartz assuredly did animal testing on smaller pets and knows this information already. They deserve a class action suit against them. I have had to be a constant nurse with my little dog.

He ate a few pieces of food if I hand fed it to him but that was all. After another day, he couldn't stand, walk and wouldn't eat or drink anything. It occurred to me that this all started after I applied the flea and tick drops. I went online and read, with horror, all the bad reviews. I immediately put my dog in the tub and washed him thoroughly with Dawn dish detergent, lathering him twice. After two more days of him just lying around, he finally began to try to stand and then walk. He is eating and drinking and acting like himself now, two weeks after I washed the drops off of him. This took place about 4 yrs ago now. I was cat sitting for a friend of mine that was in between homes at the time. Tiger had been in my care for almost 6 months. I also had my cat chloe. Tiger was twice the size of chloe and very friendly. Every night at my kids bedtime tiger would always come sit on top of the dresser and have story time with us. I had noticed that both cats had fleas one night and was telling another friend about it. The next day ** brings me one vial of Hartz Flea treatment. (Actually it was sergeant, but they are the same company). I split it between both cats giving tiger just a little bit more than chloe. That night at bedtime tiger came in like always but was acting weird. In the middle of the story he jumped onto my son's bed and pooped right there on the blanket.

He then tried to run away but his back legs where shaking so bad that he couldn't. He kept having seizures and trying to hide away from me. I took him to the sink and washed him immediately, which only made it worse. He then started vomiting. I rushed him to the 24 hr. vet at that point. But it was too late. It had already hit his nervous system and he was suffering. Tiger was put to sleep that night and it was because of this product. I still have paperwork from the vet stating this. I even had to give the vet the empty vial so they could report this incident. Why is this company still allowed to be in business is beyond me. Thought animal cruelty was illegal.

We apparently tracked some in and our cats were itching, so I thought I better take care of the flea matter right away. I bought this product from the grocery store. The only worry I had was that it might not work, not that it could do actual harm to my cats. I bought the product for cats over 5lbs, applied it as directed and literally within 30 seconds of putting it on my girl cat she started squinting and crouching down.

So I quickly read reviews of the product and saw how poisonous it could be and washed her neck. She seemed to be ok just lethargic, but the next day she was sluggish and could not hold down her food. I then gave her a full body scrub down and I could tell she felt much better. Thank goodness I didn't put it on both cats. It was so bad, I barely breathed it in and for two days my tongue was tingling. This is bad stuff. I feel terrible I didn't read these reviews first and put her life at risk. This product should be off the market!!!!!!

I recently bought a pomeranian and noticed it had fleas so we bought the serum drops afters we tired flea baths and had the groomers give him a flea bath and a clean up he still continued to scratch. So today after the kids went to bed and had some alone time I finally I applied the drops and with 5 minutes he started to cry and shake. I had to give him water and cuddle with him and he still would not stop crying and barking. I accidentally touched my nose and it feels like I rubbed chili on my skin. After I washed my face and nose it helped a bit. But now throat is itchy and my nose is runny.

My poor puppy is in so much discomfort. It is a bit after 1 am and am going to have to bathe the poor guy. He keeps freaking out. It is sad to see. Try something else for now because something is not right with the chemical. I used the correct recommend box and now I am sleepy and afraid to leave the dog like this. He won't sleep in his bed. He is making sounds like a cry. Now the inside of my nose burns badly.... NOT GOOD!

This product was use on JUNE 12th 2014. She was taken to two different VETERINARIANS on several occasions in all like 8 times to the vet over this in less than a year!! WELL SHE FOUGHT VERY HARD but it WAS TOO MUCH for HER. She lost the battle on MEMORIAL DAY 2015 at 6:00 P.M. EDT. AND that it was a HOLIDAY so I HAD to WRAP HER up in her blanket so I could WAIT until TUESDAY MAY 26th 2015 so I could take her to the Vet to have HER CREMATED with HER BLANKET that she always laid on.. SHE LOVED LIFE & she loved LAYING on her nice BLANKET!! SHE was one of the BEST PETs I have ever had & I would have to say the smartest dog I have seen!! I HATE to lose my (FAITH.) She was only 8 years old when she died, BUT the worst thing about it is that she suffered for a year because of this product!!!

Also I had taken her to the vet on Friday because I knew she was getting worst & I told them that I thought she needed to be PUT to SLEEP, that I did not want her to be in pain & suffer! While at the vet she had an accident where she pooped BLOOD on the floor!! They ran test on that & a full blood work! Her WHITE BLOOD COUNT was very high & her PLATELETS were LOW so she was bleeding internal. They gave her a shot, sent her home with antibiotics & pain MEDS, but she just laid there for 2-1/2 days. Would not eat or drink & at 6:00 P.M. SHE JUST MOANED UNTIL SHE DIED!!

This should not be on the MARKET & should be discontinued!!! So that no OTHER ANIMAL would have to go through this!! FAITH was not a PET. SHE was A FAMILY MEMBER.. SHE LOVED to ride in the TRUCK with me. SHE would go CAMPING with the family. FAITH would TRAVEL with me to RELATIVES' house that lives over 100 miles & when get there she would play with their children & PETS!! REST-IN -PEACE. (FAITH)

I used this many times before. It's Hartz ultraguard pro flea meds for cats. Recently the box color has changed. I put it on both of my cats. One seems fine. The other, within 30 minutes, began moaning, scratching herself in pain, crying and salivating. Her breathing was deep and faster than normal. I quickly stuck her in the tub and washed it off of her fur.. She seems to be okay now, just tired. My other cat that didn't have a reaction is himself I did wipe some of the med off to be safe, that my sick kitten didn't lick his fur tonight. If you decide to use this brand please keep an eye on your babies after treatment..

Halfway there, my cat started going into seizures so I rushed him to the vet. They could not stop the seizures and we had to put him down. Because he was sitting next to my dog that just had a bath with your product which the vet CONFIRMED that is what caused it. The cat was in PERFECT health and was being adopted that day! It is SHAMEFUL that this product is still on the market and other people put it on their pets without knowing the truth. It is my mission to spread the word now. I have BOYCOTTED anything Hartz!!!

This happened a couple of years ago but I am amazed that it is still happening. My young Yorkie had fleas and it was discovered when the vet wasn't open. I figured, how bad could the supermarket stuff be? Hartz has been around since I was a kid or longer; worst case scenario, it won't kill the fleas. I bought the smallest dose (for dogs under 16 lb - Sargie was about 5 lb - there was no smaller dose). Within one minute of applying it to his back, he vomited and was lethargic for the rest of the day. Thank God that was it but I would never use the stuff again - I'm sure it was way too big a dose, and who knows what else? After reading some of the heartbreaking stories here, I am flabbergasted as to why the product is still being sold.

After applying Hartz UltraGuard Plus to my 7 year old Italian Greyhound, following the instructions EXACTLY as noted, he began having difficulty breathing...AS DID I!! Over the course of a few hours after applying this toxic crap to his fur as directed, he became lethargic, not acting himself, was clearly unwell, and kept wheezing and coughing.

To make matters worse, I WAS ALSO AFFECTED! I am extremely sensitive to toxic chemicals and had similar reactions. I had asthma, chest pain, severe headaches, blurred vision, weakness, exhaustion, skin rash, sinus pain, confusion, and an utter inability to focus or think clearly -- it was as if I had stuck my head into a microwave. I felt AWFUL.

This continued and worsened for both my dog and I over a 24 hour period, and showering seemed to make it worse. Finally, on the second day, I bathed him completely with soap (many other people suggested using Dawn, as they had similar issues with this garbage product) and then I washed EVERY item he had touched from his bed, to my sheets, his blankets, pillows on the couch, etc. That seems to have helped a bit.

This is day 3 and I still feel the residual effects. My dog also vomited a lot of yellow bile, which he rarely does. A friend of mine is a physician and informed me this product contains organophosphates -- the SAME base chemical used in MUSTARD GAS. That's right. A nerve agent component is in this horrid stuff. PLEASE DO NOT BUY IT!!!

I gave my cat Hartz Ultraguard Pro on his shoulders and he instantly did not like it. He was irritated and constantly moving around and shaking his feet when he walked. He then began itching his back and losing his hair within an hour. I instantly washed it off his back. The next 48 hours he was lethargic and when he ate, would throw up and then wouldn't eat at all.

He was diagnosed with a kidney problem from a year earlier so we were associating the non-eating and throwing up to his kidneys. The next week was the worst. He slowly started to withdraw and would not eat. He had a blank stare all of the time. His blood test at vet showed creatinine level of 21 which is severe kidney failure. He died after 6 days of giving him the Hartz treatment. I did not read any reviews before I applied the tick medicine.

I was very naive. I was accepting Hartz as a well-known and responsible animals product company when I should have known better. My lack of knowledge killed my cat. I'm warning you all now... do not give your animals any Hartz tick medicine. It is poisoning their little bodies. This company should be fined big for all the misery they have caused pet owners and they should take their products off the markets!!!

This is the worst product I've ever used and I will NEVER buy Hartz products again. My cat is indoors 99% of the time as we live on a busy street, but occasionally, I do let him outdoors for a short while, supervised. I noticed he had a few fleas and didn't want it to become a problem, so I bought some of this thinking it would do the trick. Not only was it useless in killing any fleas, it made my cat VERY sick. I followed the directions exactly (seems like the ENTIRE tube is a bit too much, but there was no dose by weight). I was very careful not to get any on him where he might accidentally lick it. Immediately Tigger started running around like his fur was on fire, he was crying and later threw up that evening.

The next day he seems to be in a 'fog'. When I called the company, they didn't seem too concerned about him, their explanation was that he probably got some in his mouth and to bathe him. (Sure! Like I'm going to traumatize him further) He is finally getting back to normal. Also there's no expiration date on it, who knows how long they sit on the shelves.

He wasn't moving, he sleeps all day so finally I picked him up to cuddle him and see what was wrong. He just wasn't his cuddly self. He wanted nothing to do with me and that wasn't normal for him. I figured maybe he didn't feel good or something so I put him back in his favorite chair where he liked to sleep.

A few hours later he didn't look good, his head was kind of hanging off the side of the chair so I picked him up. His eyes were wide open and normally his eyes are a pretty yellow. They were very dark oranges red color. I knew something wasn't right. He was breathing very shallow. And then took three very hard and deep breaths and that was it. He was gone. I'm so heart broken that I lost my kitty after only having him about 5 days. Someone told me hartz had bad reviews. I looked it up and I'm in awe all the bad reviews similar to mine.

This powder caused small seizures on his right side, constant shaking, and yelping in pain whenever he's touched. We washed him thoroughly but he's still in a lot of visible pain. I've never heard him yelp and cry in a prolonged way as he has since we've applied the powder. We'll be going to the vet tomorrow. I am appalled that this product is on the market. There were clumps of hair all over the house and worse is that he was not moving around much and kept shaking off his back paws as if he had something on them. I looked at his paws and there was nothing wrong. His paws were not even wet. After looking at him look somewhat lethargic I decided to do some research of possible side effects from this product. I immediately see all the postings regarding this product leading to seizures, skins burns, lethargic behavior, and even death. Luckily I read what others had written and did what they has also recommended. It was midnight and there I was bathing my cat... After I bathed him and scrubbed the product off the back of his neck I noticed that he was beginning to act more like his normal self. I used the blow dryer to dry his hair and then let him sleep the night while keeping a close eye on him.

In the am I noticed that he was still shaking his back paws. I called my vet and before I could even finish the details of what happened, the secretary immediately told me that perhaps he did have a seizure and that they see this happen very often with this product. I was guided to give him another bath and to bring him in... The vet gave me some charcoal to give him for the next 48 hours to assist with soaking up whatever is left in his system. I am totally angry that this is even sold.... I plan on calling the store where I bought if from and sharing this story, demanding my money back...and demand that they take it off the shelf. My vet said that I was lucky and that giving him a bath saved his life..... I normally do no post reviews, but since what I read from other writers saved my kitty cat's life then I thought I should do the same in case it helps another owner.

I bought Hartz Ultraguard one spot to prevent my love Bosco from any flea problems since I sometimes let him out in our tiny 20x20 yard to explore. I put one dose between his shoulders on Thu (9/5- Fri am) night. He started trying to groom himself, so I thought I'd go online and see if that's safe, since the box says nothing. Of course then all these horrible reviews and heart wrenching stories about Hartz Ultraguard on spot pop up. There were a handful of Amazon reviews that did not describe a pet dying or almost dying, and some had used a dog product on a cat or done a dip and a spray, while I used it just as directed, for kittens 12 wks+, he is...was 18wks.

Just to be safe I washed off his back with Dawn soap. He didn't start showing symptoms until the following afternoon, 15hrs later, he started wretching and vomiting bile. While he was less energetic, I wasn't worried yet. He slept all day and vomited bile again at 630 and 930, it was then that I took him to the Hillside emergency vet in Dallas. I showed them the product, they gave him a subcutaneous injection of fluids and cerenia for nausea.

When we got home, around 4am, I noticed he was starting to drool profusely. I called the ER, they said it could be from nausea, but of course I was free to hospitalize him for a day for $900. I decided to wait because my regular vet opened in 4-5 hours. He hid under the table like a meatloaf, whimpering out occasional cries. It was heartbreaking.

I took him to my regular vet at 9am that morning. They immediately affirmed that it was definitely poisoning from the Hartz. They gave him another thorough Dawn dish soap bath and an anti-inflammatory/allergy injection to quell the reaction to the Hartz. He seemed to perk up a little, but now I know that was simply the fight draining from him. My vet reassured me that she thought he'd pull through, that my saving grace was probably that I did use the "correct" dose and that I washed it off with Dawn right away.

He continued to sleep and occasionally cry that Saturday. He was weak and slightly limp when I picked him up but he was walking around still. He was nodding off in his water bowl and couldn't eat or drink. He slept on my chest that night and kept pulling himself closer to nuzzle under my chin. By 7am he could not lift his head. I started looking up the closest emergency animal clinic open on Sunday when he lurched forward in a seizure and bile shot out of his mouth. He seized violently and uncontrollably vomited bile for maybe 10 seconds.

I tried to just hold him up and parallel so he could vomit on the floor and tried to comfort him through my terror and tears. After the seizure and vomiting I held him in my arms, I put my hand on his chest. I could feel a heartbeat for a second, but he was not breathing. He was not moving. He died in my arms, looking up at me... This was the most traumatic, horrifying, heart wrenching experience I have ever had, I do not say that lightly. Bo depended on me, I stupidly trusted big name Hartz - they must be held accountable for these innocent deaths.

I normally do not apply monthly spot on treatments. I only do it when/if there is a problem. I shy away from harmful chemicals in all areas of life. September is not a good month for fleas in my area, and to try and quickly break the flea life cycle I tried this Hartz 'Ultra' product. Last year Frontline did not work for most people in my area. (BTW: Frontline and Advantage are poison also so don't be fooled and check out those reviews since they are just as bad as these... Try IPM, it is certainly worth a bit extra time and effort to keep our pets safe!)

I have 3 XX-large dogs. I only put the full amount on the largest (female) and cut back a bit on the 2 'smaller' males. Both males had a bad reaction. I applied it late evening and the next morning younger one (~5 yrs old) had flaking skin all over and is itchy (week later, still happening). The 7 yr old male has CHEMICAL BURNS near his shoulders! It first appeared as red/oozing area and I washed that crap off all of them (him first). He has not healed and the burn continues to ooze. NONE OF THESE CRAPPY CHEMICALS SHOULD BE ON THE MARKET... THROW THEM IN THE TRASH WITH THE CHINESE SOURCED DOG FOOD!

My heart goes out to the people whose pets were killed by these HARTZ-LESS companies. It is not just Hartz. My advice for the future is to get some diatomaceous earth, some flea treats, and there is now a yard treatment of plant-based insect neurotoxins that can be applied to yards. It has oils from things that mammals eat and is not at all toxic (plus smells great, like cinnamon mixed with tea, since those are the 2 highest concentrated oils in the product). And cedar mulch helps pesky wildlife and stray cats from keeping the cycle going in the yard. VACUUM, VACUUM, VACUUM is a great tool to fight fleas. But there is no place on the market for this toxic crap they are pushing!!!!!

About 45 minutes after applying the product, Boh started having issues walking, lack of control of his back legs, and weaving. I kept a close eye on him when I saw my girl was doing the same thing only much much worse. She would walk through the house and hit her head on the chair, couldn't hold her head up to drink, vomiting, unable to stand to urinate, falling, and rolling over herself.

I got her to her Dr first thing the morning of the 27th. They gave her two injections, one of a medicine that would help and another that was pain meds and the other for nausea. I called and checked on her before the Dr's office closed that day and promised I wouldn't be an overanxious mom and call right when the doors opened the next morning. At 0927 on the 28th, I called to check. I got transferred straight to the vet and got the news. Said that he did the best he could. Came back and checked on her twice overnight - the poison just overtook her system.

I made a call to the Hartz care line and let them know what happened. The Hartz company has yet to return my call in regards to what happened to Ziva. My 9 year old cat Fred was a perfectly healthy and large cat. He never went outdoors, however our yard began having problems with fleas which soon spread to the basement. As a preventative, I used Hartz flea and tick drops on him for the first time, since they seemed like the best quality for the price. Last night we found him lethargic laying his head in the water bowl, completely infested with fleas. We quickly began to wash him, but he went into shock and passed away in my arms. All of his symptoms pointed to flea anemia, which is usually only lethal to older and sick cats or young kittens. Fred was 9 years old and in the best of health until I used this product. I have no doubt in my mind that it not only was completely ineffective in preventing a flea infestation, but weakened his health enough for the infestation to take his life. I urge everyone to spend the extra money and buy a better product such as Advantage. If you truly love your pets, you will avoid Hartz products at all cost.

I administered the Hartz flea and tick drops as per instructions on both my cats. Within an hour one of my cats started flailing around, acting erratically and panting. The only thing new to the cat was the Hartz drops. I thought she was having an adverse reaction, so I picked her up and used a soapy wash cloth to try and clean the area where the drops had been applied. Once my cat was dry I continued to observe her. She was no longer frantically flailing about or panting, but at the shoulder area where the drops were applied her muscles and skin were twitching.

This continued for a couple of hours, so I soaped her down again. Finally, after the second bathing my cat stopped twitching. She calmed down and drank some water. This incident scared me so terribly that I ended up washing the drops off the second cat too. I did not want to take the chance that he would have the same reaction. This happened yesterday 7/10/2014. I have kept both cats under constant observation and thankfully neither are having any more difficulties. I had used Hartz flea and tick drops about 7 years ago and had no problems, but after this experience I will never use them again.

His side effects started the very next day.. He had a high fever, would not eat or drink and chemical burns started appearing on his body. This happened even after I went exactly by the directions on the box. I rushed him to the vet the same day and they said his symptoms were caused by the Hartz flea and tick treatment. So then over course of 3 months, I was taking him on weekly vet visits to be treated, but he still wasn't getting any better. Eventually he became weak, so much that he could no longer walk. Also to go along with that he became very emaciated. We had to feed and water him through a syringe. Then on early morning of February 12, 2012 my beloved Siamese cat passed away.

This continued for several hours until the diarrhea became bloody. I just got back from the ER, where I spent almost $300 undoing what the Hartz Ultraguard did to her. IV fluids, anti-nausea, anti-diarrheal, etc. It's going to end up being more, as I will have to board her at her regular vet while I'm at work, and will end up having the carpet cleaned. I used this on my new Shih Tzu. I haven't had him for two months yet. When he first got home he was not scratching a lot at all - I didn't notice. I bought this shampoo to bathe him in and he started scratching right after the bath and doing heavy breathing. I thought maybe it was his food; I was giving him food that was not grain free... so I switched to grain free. His eating habits are good but the itching continued - I gave him a second bathe in that stuff just this past Saturday... seems like he was scratching more and sleeping a lot.

So I googled and found this site and I went to the store and bought Dawn and some dog shampoo, not Hartz - and conditioner paid almost 30 bucks for the Dawn dishing washing soap and the dog shampoo. Went home last night and bathe him again using the Dawn first then the dog shampoo and conditioner. I noticed after this bath he scratched a little but not much and this morning he didn't scratch at all. I think he might scratch a little but not like a constant thing like before - he was at it constantly. I poured the Hartz down the drain. I am not buying another Hartz product, and I'm telling all my friends. I just got my puppy and he means the world to me. When I buy something for him I want it to help him, not cause discomfort or kill him. Thanks for reading this!

On September 23 at 4pm pacific time I bathed my 5 year old healthy 70lb Lab mix dog with Hartz Mountain Flea and Tick shampoo, carefully following all directions. On the morning of Sept 24 dog was noticed to be salivating excessively and had a loss of appetite, but on our morning walk he still could walk and run. By afternoon about 24 hours after application, he began exhibiting signs of confusion and instability in getting up. On Wednesday Sept 25, he remained salivating excessively and could only walk with difficulty. By late in the day he exhibited signs of lethargy and lack of interest and confusion. On Thursday symptoms remained but was able to hand feed in the AM. He remained confused and inactive throughout the day. Only rising with help and walking a few steps and then refusing to get up due to instability.

On Friday September 26 vet confirmed through blood tests that the dog had been subjected to poisoning through the flea shampoo and that increased fluids and moist food and continued monitoring and assistance was all that could be done at this time. On Saturday September 27 symptoms of confusion and difficulty walking and rising remained but were lessened, excess salivation remained. On Sunday September 28 dog began to eat normally and for the first time trotted a short distance and appeared less confused. By evening dog has recovered to about 75% of normal behaviors, rising and walking on his own showing normal interest in stimulation, but is still salivating and not running or playing. NOTE: This day 6.

This product as is reflected on a simple internet search has presented a lot of problems for unsuspecting pet owners and should be stated as such on the label along with treatment for a reaction and/or any antidotes. I have used Sentry flea and tick shampoo in the past which has the same ingredients, without incident, but Hartz shampoo is 3 times stronger and that should be noted as well. This is a documented dangerous product for many animals, with a long history of disasters. Unfortunately the unsuspecting pet owner is unaware of this until disaster strikes and research is done after the fact. A clear and obvious label should be required as with all other pesticides and medications.

Still unable to move, she had not eaten the entire stay, while being fed drugs intravenously. There was nothing more the vets could do and I was told she would be more comfortable at home. I was given prescriptions Metacam and Tramadol to maintain her pain and seizure/spasm symptoms. Still unable to relieve herself, I would carry Mei out, hold her little body up and squeeze her bladder in an effort to empty it. Mei had 2 seizures on 8/5/13 and showed some signs of mobility. I revisited the vet on 8/6/13. Mei now had a urinary tract infection due to the inability to relieve herself of urine. Mei had barely eaten so the vet was not as concerned with her lack of bowel movements.

More prescriptions, Prednisone, our last effort to get her mobile (possible herniated disks from the seizures), Mirtazapine and Ciprofloxacn. I pray. On 8/8/13 Mei started to eat, drink and began the attempts to walk! Today 8/11/13 Mei Gou is wobbling on all fours, eating and drinking on her own (for the most part), but still has no real control of her bodily functions. Mei Gou has pulled through and now that I am sure she will live, it is time to contact Hartz again and pursue the issue! Seeing as there was no star for heartbroken, I settled for Angry! After being misdiagnosed initially 2 months ago, I foolishly subjected my baby, Mei Gou a 13 lb Chinese Crested to Hartz products a 2nd time! Mei is presently on her 3rd day at the vet! She has been having seizures, spasms and tremors! She then stopped eating, drinking and is basically unable to move. Mei’s 1st bout involved the Hartz flea drops, but was diagnosed and treated for lyme disease. Symptoms were lethargy, lack of appetite and despite my attempts she could not or would not drink. It took over a week , but she did recover. This time though the symptoms are more severe and seem to have affected her more neurologically. After being told about Hartz (too late)! I contacted the Hartz 800 #, I was greeted by a computer generated response informing me I had won a 2 day cruise to the Bahamas.. Seriously!!!!! My dog is near death and you want to give me a cruise?

I then spoke with Nancy a so-called vet, informing her that I had purchased for the correct weight, read and followed the instructions to the letter and yes I had in fact used a dog product on my dog! I will say I did use the cat drops on Rico my cat and he is fine. Thank you, GOD! I have come to the conclusion that despite all the heartache and suffering these products are causing, the almighty dollar still prevails!! I have spent $1200.00 so far to veterinary care which I consider nothing if my baby is ok, but if the Hartz packaging had warned me about the possible consequences of this $25.00 purchase this would never had happened. I will dance through hoops and send pages of information on Mei Gous' situation per her vet, in hopes of getting some sort of action/response from Hartz in 4 to 6 weeks.

My prayer is that Mei is alive then. In the event that she passes I have the option of having pieces of my baby sent to Hartz for necropsy and they will determine whether or not their products were her demise. Can you imagine? I am now left with the knowledge that not once, but twice I have poisoned my four footed child. She is alone in a cold cement cage with tubes protruding from her body in an attempt to rid her body of the toxins I have subjected her to while trusting the products purchased in an effort simply to rid her little body of fleas. If you love your pet DON'T purchase these products! My prayers go out to those who have suffered at the hands of Hartz. I will continue to pray!

One of my chihuahuas, DJ, immediately had trouble breathing and after about 5 minutes, had a very bad seizure. Within a few minutes, he bounced back and seemed okay. The next day, he seemed okay, a bit lethargic, but okay. At this point, I had no idea what was going on. I hadn't put 2 and 2 together. The following day, I noticed that my other chihuahua, Gizmo, was walking funny, kinda sideways. I also noticed DJ was bobbing his head and had trouble balancing. At this point, I knew something was wrong. I thought back to when DJ had the seizure and it was immediately after the shampoo. I googled Hartz toxic and found a website with many horror stories.

We immediately washed the dogs. Unfortunately, it was too late. Over the next two weeks, we were in and out of the vet and the animal hospital at a cost of over $1,200. Their health continued to decline, getting worse every day until DJ appeared paralyzed. He couldn't walk at all. That night, he began crying in pain and having repeated seizures. I took him to the vet first thing in the morning. When we arrived at the vet, she did an exam and advised us that his condition probably would not get better and that it appeared that he was constantly seizing. She gave him a bunch of drugs and brought him back into the room where we said goodbye as she injected the medicine to put him to sleep. It was so sad, he was my best friend.

Hartz finally called me back that morning, their customer service rep. Ray told me how sorry he was that we were having to deal with this. He asked for the codes on the bottle of shampoo and requested that I return it to them with my vet bills. He advised that he would send a prepaid FedEx label to cover the costs. A few days later, Gizmo appeared to be going through the same thing. I called Hartz back and they offered to do an autopsy at their cost. The vet sent them Gizmo's body. Poor guy, he tried to get around up until the very end. His poor little legs twitching and kicking constantly in and out of seizures. Hartz is poison. They need to be held accountable. I am very angry with Hartz.

Now, as stated on the label, I was to put the powder on the entire back from neck to tail as well as on the stomach and legs. I applied only a small amount of powder to my cat, Tigger, on his back down by his tail. I did the same with the other 2 cats. That was at 1pm on Tuesday.

On Wednesday morning, everything seemed fine; the cats all had breakfast and Tigger ate as usual. That was at 6am. Around 11am, Tigger started to throw up. At first, I didn't think anything of it because all the cats tend to throw up due to hairballs from time to time. However, Tigger continued to periodically throw up, and then, he would lay down and rest. I had to work that afternoon from 1pm-4pm.

When I returned home from work at about 4:15pm, I checked on Tigger, and it was obvious that he was still sick and getting worse. He now had diarrhea and would cry just before vomiting. I called the number on the back of the Hartz flea powder bottle, as I believed that was what caused his illness. They asked me a few questions and told me to get him to a vet.

At this time of the day, my regular vet office was not taking anymore patients, so I had to take Tigger to the animal hospital. The vet at the hospital asked me if I had used anything, and I told him of the flea powder. He told me how hazardous the flea powder is. He looked Tigger over and told me that because the powder had been on him for some 30 hours at that point, it was well into his system. He wanted to admit Tigger for the night and try to flush out his system. The problem with that was I had to pay them 75% of the estimated bill of $1000.00. I simply did not have $750.00 that night nor was I able to borrow it.

The vet gave Tigger fluids, and I took him home. I have to admit, I really didn't grasp how dire the situation was, and I never thought that he would die. I thought that the stuff would pass through his system, and that he'd be OK. That simply did not happen. Tigger rested all night, and in the morning, I offered him water, which he refused. He would look at me as I petted him, but he was very lethargic and spacy. He was quiet, and he didn't appear to be in any pain. He basically wanted to lay by his self, so he went under my bed and wouldn't come out. I kept trying to get him to come out so that I could check him closer.

At about 11:15 am, I went to check on him again, and he was partially out from under my bed, as though he was trying to come out. But he had died. I can't begin to tell you how badly this hurt me. I feel like I failed him. Tigger was a wonderful cat, healthy, and full of personality. He would always be by my side, and he would lay down with me every time I rested. I have been sick a lot lately, as I have lupus. I regularly lay down during the day to rest for a short period of time, and Tigger was always by my side. He was a great comfort to me, and now he's gone.

Tigger died on Wednesday, February 16, at 11am, all because I tried to treat him for an isolated incident of fleas. He had just turned 5 years old on February 4. I am absolutely irate over the fact that these poisonous products are still being sold, even after several hundreds, possibly thousands of pets, have become seriously sick or died because of them. That is just unacceptable!

I came home that afternoon, and she seemed okay. Later that evening, she started to show some symptoms like red, itchy skin, excessive panting, vomiting, excessive drooling, and wanting to go pee about every 10 minutes, but nothing happens, except for maybe a little driblet.

It seems like she can't poop. We need to keep an eye on her, and try to give her a little breakfast, try to keep the water fresh. Sometimes they have a reaction to the treatment within the first 24 hours. They may act a little strange. If it gets worse, we need to take her in. I called the veterinarian and they said to bathe her, which we did. I called Dr. Kristie at 7AM. Her office doesn't open until 8AM. I called, then left messages that I will call again in about hour. In the morning, she seems like she's tired. She's resting a little better, but still has to go to the bathroom every 10 minutes. It seems like she cant rest, because she has to pee. She doesn't feel hot, she just looks sick.

Four days ago, I bought Hartz Ultra Guard Ear Mite Treatment for cats. My older cat Maya has ear mites, (lucky I had only been treating her and not my kitten because she just got spayed and I wanted to wait) her ears were dirty with waxy build up, dark brown stuff, they were just nasty kitty ears and she had scratched her ears so bad her hair was coming out. So a friend of mine who is a vet assistant told me to buy an ear mite medication (if only she would have mentioned not to buy Hartz). I went to Wal-Mart and purchased this product.

My cat is 2 years old and weighs 12 pounds. The directions said to put 4-5 drops in ear of her ears once a day for 7-10 days. I didn't want to give her too many drops so I decided to only do 3 drops in each ear once a day for 7 days. Today is day 4 and her ears are bright red inside and outside around the base of her ears. She is also yelping when I touch her ears, which she didn't do before I used Hartz.

I called my vet assistant friend and talked with her boss who is a vet. As soon as I mentioned what I used, she told me to immediately wash her ears with baby shampoo. Her ears are still bright red and hot! I have an appointment tomorrow with the vet to see what we can do and how much damage this medication made by Hartz has done to my cat. I am so upset. I don't understand how they can be allowed to sell a product that harms animals.

I took him to the vet and when I told the vet that I had applied this horrible medicine he knew right away that was the cause. He gave him a steroid shot and put him on medication. the steroid shot wore off and now he can't walk at all. He just drags his back legs behind him. I have to carry him outside and to his food dish. I contacted my vet to inform him that he has gotten worse and he said the only other thing we could try is to give him a prescription for prednisone and see if that improves his condition. I am not holding my breath! I will more than likely have to put him down.

This is unfair, sick, and cruel that this product is still being sold. I am outraged!

I purchased Hartz UltraGuard Flea Egg & Flea Larvae Treatment for Cats and Kittens and it made my cat **** sick; vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy. It was applied exactly as directed to an indoor cat weighing 19 lbs. and 12 years old. I called my vet and they told me to wash it off immediately with baby shampoo. They also told me they don't recommend this product for any animal. When your vet tells you that, you know it's bad!

My baby survived, but many others have not. I was horrified by the information available at HartzVictims.org and other websites, Facebook pages, YouTube videos, etc. proving these products severely harm and kill animals. Then I discovered this Public Advisory from the EPA, published in March 2010. After receiving tens of thousands of complaints, they conducted a study of several flea treatments and think the inert ingredients in these products are causing my cat's symptoms and worse, seizures and death. The active ingredient in the Hartz flea product I used is methoprene.

Why is this poison still on shelves? Because unknowing people buy it, Hartz makes more profit than it loses, and the EPA is caught up in red tape (or just lax). Report your complaint directly to Hartz. They are legally required to report it to the EPA. Contact the distributor where you bought the product and give them hell. They need to be held responsible for the products they profit from. Find a Product Liability Attorney who offers free consultants and tell them your story.

Just trying to avoid going to the vet and buying an expensive product, I took a different path and bought a cheap solution. I put it on my cat Felix, my best friend, on the same day and he was fine at first, then the next morning he was barely breathing, having tremors, and seizures. My cat is currently at the vet in Clarenville Newfoundland after having to be rushed there early Saturday morning; he got out yesterday, Sunday, and was perfect. Last night, he took seizures and having tremors again and had to be rushed back to the vet. I was talking to the vet tonight and she said that he has not changed. My cat is suffering and possibly have to be put down and die which is the last thing I want to do. We would like to go on record as having two beloved cats gravely harmed by Hartz flea and tick collars as well as the spot treatment. These collars were for Cats, and were applied as directed. Tigger had had the collar on for at least two weeks; Abby, only a week. These were both inside cats, otherwise healthy.

On Tues., Nov 2, 5pm, Tiggers loud cries attracted my attention- an uncommon tone to it. Our daughter scream that something was wrong with Tigger sent me running to find him barely able to walk, jerking all over, his eyes dilated wide and bouncing all over the place, what I believed to be seizures. A dash to our vet confirmed our suspicions. Ironically, her first question was. Have you put anything new on him? Yes, that flea collar! Tell, me its not Hartz! (how interesting! ) Yes, it is! Immediately, they cut it off him and whisked him away to bathe him and start what began as his four days of seizures/sedation in ICU, and a mighty battle for his life.

The very next morning, I heard Abby yowling and ran to see her staggering across the dining room. Immediately I knew! I scooped her up and flew to the vet, burst through the door, crying, The other cat has been poisoned by this collar! So there they were, both in ICU! Tigger was sedated, hooked up to all kinds of lines; he looked awful. I'll never escape that image!

Our vet called Hartz several times. She called to make sure what the toxin was and what they'd recommend for treatment. They never denied it couldn't possibly be their collars, perhaps because they've heard this story before!

After 72 hours of intensive care, we were finally able to bring Abby home, perhaps because she hadn't had the collar on for as long. Her neurological system is still a bit shell shocked and I hope she won't have lasting damage.

Tigger, on the other hand, was still very bad off at 72 hrs but we decided to give him 24 more hours, just praying he could overcome the horrible toxicity in his system. But Saturday morn, 96 hrs into his ordeal, our vet advised us that his vitals were not good and the merciful thing to do was to let him go.

I bought a Hartz Flea and Tick Dip for my dog and cat on September 24, 2011. We recently adopted a kitten from the animal shelter and she came infested with fleas and has since spread them to our 2 year old papillon, Remy. I decided to dip them to relieve them of all the itching. Big mistake.

About 10-15 minutes after the dip, my dog was shaking uncontrollably. I thought he was cold, so I rubbed him a bit more with the towel and put a doggie fleece on him. He was still trembling 5 minutes later, but now he sat at the foot of my chair, looked straight into my eyes, and whimpered. He did it again, and again, and I just looked back at him - he's not vocal at all, so I thought he had to go out to use the bathroom. I took him out to pee, but when we got back inside; he seemed only to be in more pain. He couldn't sit still, was in a spasm, panting heavily for a cool day, and making these noises that I finally began to interpret as pain. I could tell he wanted to lick himself, his belly and hind legs particularly, but he couldn't sit still long enough to do it. Finally I asked my partner for help and inspected his rear to see if something odd was going on.

His skin was bright red. Around the back of his hindquarters, it was puffy and irritated and I could tell it was extremely painful for him. There was even residue stuck in his hair (remember, the bottle says not to rinse them!)

I quickly looked up adverse reactions to Hartz Flea Dip online and what I saw caused my heart to catch in my throat. I immediately grabbed our cat and washed her in the sink with dish soap and lukewarm water. I took my dog into the bath and did the same but rinsed him for far longer.

It broke my heart to see him in so much pain, even after all the rinsing. I cried and cried and thought that I too would have killed my pets by trusting that something stocked by such a large brand would actually be safe for my companion animals. Remy continued to whimper from the pain, he continued to have small muscle spasms and in general looked lethargic and beaten - not the normal, curious, active dog he usually was. Every time I would sit or lay down near him, he would press his little body against me as if to say "Please make it stop!"

I sped to the grocery store and picked up some Benadryl and gave him the appropriate dose. Within an hour or so the trembling had calmed substantially and he was dosing. Now, about 9 hours later, he seems to be more fully recovered, investigating things around the house and looking more interested in life and in less pain.

I will never, ever buy another Hartz product again. I bought two flea collars for my animals and will be returning them tomorrow. I will also tell all my friends and family not to buy these products. I cannot believe a company would be so greedy as to continue to sell and promote products that can actually kill animals.

My animals still have fleas, by the way, but I am incredibly thankful that they are both alive, though I will still be keeping a close and careful eye on the cat for a few more days at least.

My deepest condolences to those who have lost animals to these toxic products.

We have never had any problems with fleas. This summer, however, we were on a road trip and we thought our little Yorkie might have picked up fleas somewhere. We were staying in a lot of pet friendly hotels. When we got home, I bought her a Hartz flea collar. She had a flea collar on for only nine days and now her back legs are giving her problems. She can hardly walk and keeps falling. This dog was in perfect health on our two month road trip and was active and was swimming at every opportunity. I have just read all the terrible stories on the Internet. Why is Hartz able to continue to sell these deadly products?

I took him to the vet and she said that the pyrethins in the dip poisoned him, as it is very toxic to cats. It attacked his neuro system. He has been receiving treatment but we will not know for a while if he will recover.

Another cat constantly coughs and rolls on the floor. all of them still scratching and are lethargic. I suggest their products be carefully scrutinized and removed from the market. Her ears were even loaded. It made me sick that I had trusted this collar to work and did not even consider that the problem was fleas. I spent 2 and a half hours cleaning her. I am now spending several hours treating my home and yard. I typically had been using Zodiac products or Adams with great success (never a problem). I had to use the liquid product on her last night just to make sure she is safe until this problem is corrected. I will never use a Hartz product again and will discourage anyone from using a Hartz product.

In March 2011, I bought Hartz Ultra Guard Plus flea and tick drops for my little Mojo a fiest/chihuahua mix. I was a regular user of Frontline in the past and thought I would give Hartz a try because of the price. My little buddy started immediately shaking his head and scratching his ears until he was scratching sores on his little ears. I didn't associate his behavior with the Hartz at first and thought he might have ear mites. Upon taking him to the vet and realizing that it was the "poison" Hartz that I had put on him myself, I was devastated. Mojo was lethargic and lost down to 5lbs he was sleeping all day and not eating. He is now on an aggressive treatment of steroids and antibiotics.

His reaction to the Hartz caused his immune system to attack the nerve endings in his ears, tail, feet and is causing his hair to come out. His diagnosis is Cutaneous Vasculitis with Hartz poison drops being the trigger that caused it. The tissue in the affected areas have started to die. My little Mojo has literally scratched the tips of his ears off, has lost toe nails and hair. Hopefully, he will get over this poisoning but still 3 months later I am still trying to save his little life. He is just starting to put a little weight back on but he is still just a shadow of his former self.

I will never forgive myself for doing this although unknowingly to my little baby boy. I can't understand how in the world the Hartz Mountain Corp. can still be selling this poison. I feel very lucky after reading the hundreds of horror stories of pet deaths associated with this product. Mojo is still alive, he may lose his ears because the tissue is still dying and new sores are still appearing on his little body. Please people, do not use this product! It's a very deadly poison, pay the extra money for the Frontline or Advantage as they don't enter the bloodstream as Hartz poison does. If I had only looked into it first. Why is this stuff still on store shelves!?

We applied Hartz UltraGuard Plus flea and tick drops to our 13-lb Shih Tzu per instructions. Shortly after administering, we noticed she was acting droopy and sick and had little tremors. She did not get any worse or any better over the weekend, so we took her to the vet. The vet was concerned about the type of flea medicine we had used, but it was discovered she had a bladder infection and a bladder stone. So, there we had it; she was sick from that.

She was given antibiotics and sent home. This is when the horror began. At 5:00 am, Wednesday morning, we woke up to hear Lily gasping for air, foaming at the mouth and seizing very bad. We rushed her to the vet and were told she was poisoned. What started as little tremors went into full-blown seizures due to the Hartz UltraGuard slowing absorption in her system. We were told she could pull out of it and was put on an IV. At 10:00 pm, we received the terrible news that she had passed away. It was a horrible way for an innocent dog to die--18 hours of seizures and her body finally gave out.

Please stay away from all over-the-counter cheap flea poison. Only buy from your vet. We feel like we killed our dog when we were only trying to help her. There are tens of thousands of stories like ours on the internet. There is no warning on the box that this product can kill your pet. My wife and I purchased a full bred Labrador before I was deployed in the Army to Iraq in order to help ease the separation with our children. Our now two-year old dog, Champ, is a much loved member of our family. He is as healthy as a horse. I recently purchased Hartz Ultra Guard Flea & Tick Drops from the local CVS store and I applied it to him after I gave him a bath. I used the correct size and followed the directions precisely.

Approximately three hours later, Champ broke down in convulsions, seizure-like behavior with apparent bowel failure. He was urinating and defecating on himself at our home and the smell was awful. He was slobbering at the mouth and was straining to breath. This all lasted about ten minutes while my 9-year old son and I knelt by Champ's side to try and comfort him.

Several times, Champ pulled his tail up and laid his head down while shivering and shaking with his eyes glossed over. I felt that he was going to die any moment. This was as close to true death that I have seen since my two deployments to combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Champ slowly began to recover, shaking and staggering while walking but I'm not sure if he is fully recovered.

Sept. 4, 2010, I applied Hartz Flea Drops to my healthy 4 years old cat, Jazzcat (an Oriental chocolate-point Siamese for whom I paid $450). I used it according to the directions. Within a few minutes, she began to twitch and tremor. She ran madly around the house and did not want me touch her. I took her to the Cat Clinic in Mill Valley, CA where I learned that she was having a reaction to the chemicals in Hartz and that cats often go into fatal seizures after using it. They bathed Jazzcat twice to get rid of the toxins and she is now at home, calmer but still with some tremors of her ears, tail and feet. Obviously, this Hartz flea treatment can be deadly poison to cats.

After reading other statements on this site, I realize how fortunate I am that Jazzy has survived so far. I only hope she has no lasting neurological or other damage. My vet said Hartz is "thinking of taking it off the market". My question is, why wait? Get it off the market now! Veterinarian charge: $110. Emotional distress to Jazzcat and myself: Immeasurable.

Six years ago, I adopted a 2-year-old cat from the small animal shelter in Hillsboro, Oregon. When I was ready to take her home, I noticed she had fleas and let them know. Their reply was, “She is your cat now.” So I went straight to my local PetSmart and picked up Hartz drops. I read all the directions and used it as the label advised. Shortly after, my new kitty we had named Darby, started convulsing. We rushed her to the emergency vet who told us they had advised PetSmart on multiple occasions that this product was dangerous and sometimes lethal for cats (but could be used for dogs). Needless to say, I was shocked. I called PetSmart and they agreed to pay my vet bill (I believe it was $75). The vet washed my cat several times and monitored her. I believe that PetSmart was taking this as a serious matter.

So now years have gone by and we adopted a dog for my niece. He was a Jack Russell Terrier. We were told he was 1-year-old when we adopted him. On several occasions, I had used a flea and tick shampoo on him and had noticed his skin was very red (but I thought that he was having an allergy to fleas). Then 2 months ago, I was dog sitting and gave him a bath with the Hartz shampoo and hours later, he vomited twice. I thought this was due to a new food. He played all the next day (he had walks and hours of fetch, his favorite), but I did notice that he was whining in the car (he loved the car so this seemed odd). My sister picked him up at 3 pm and he vomited in the car.

Then that night they found him having a seizure and he later died at the emergency vet. I am now convinced that the Hartz shampoo killed him. We were all devastated. Every member of the family had an emotional breakdown. Jack was the sweetest dog in the whole world. The vet said there could be a thousand different reasons for this sudden seizure including his pure breed status, but as I previously stated, I believe it was the Hartz. Still, it was very emotionally devastating and my 8-year-old niece still cries about it. We are not seeking any legal representation. We just want this off the shelves as loving families are trying to help their pets and instead are unknowingly hurting them.

It was a Saturday evening and no vets were open. I finally find PetSmart who called their doctor in for me. Bella had to have blood taken and given IVs. I took her home several hrs later and she still was very ill. It is three days later and she still is having problem. My Vet said Bella was poisoned from the Hartz product. My cat passed away January and I found Bella and she is a great kitten. I am very upset that she had to go through this. Also I am not sure if she has any long term effects.

My female cat was at the vet having an Xray because the vet thought her stomach felt lumpy and funny. The Xray showed what the vet said looked like someone had just pumped cement into her stomach. Three vets looked at the Xray and said they had never seen anything like it before. My dog got a hold of one of her Hartz mini mouses and I noticed when he ripped it open, what came out was just like clumping kitty litter or clay. I opened up another mouse and found this lump of stuff that clearly was clay. Now I'm wondering if this is what that textured cement-like stuff is what is in her stomach from the mouse toys. I have given her many, many of these to play with. She is also constipated now, and has only had one bowel movement in about a week. I called Hartz to find out what was in the mouse and they said it was crushed cardboard. This product says made in China, and I'll bet it is really clay and not just crushed cardboard. It is sticky and tacky like clay when wet. Tomorrow, I will talk to my vet to see what she thinks. I am hoping my cat does not die from this. I also opened another large Hartz mouse that she has had and that appeared to have dirt in it???

I had a Jack Russell (mix). His name was Jaxson. I gave him a bath with Hartz Fleas and Tick dip... on Sept. 03, 2008 and on Sept. 04, 2008 he was sick, vomiting, diarrhea. But I didn't think about the dip. I just thought it was something he had ate. When I took to the vet, he said antifreeze poisoning but I told him there was no way he got into antifreeze. It was a week later at the 2nd vet. She told us that he had kidney failure and liver was bad too. She put him on the IV pump for 2 weeks, then sent him home where we had to give fluid under his skin and gave him 7 different kinds of meds. He just got sicker and I had to put to sleep on Oct. 4, 2008. I have had a hard time getting over this. He was my life. My kids had their life to live and my husband works all the time. Jaxson was with me from daylight to dark. Everywhere I went, he went... I think they should put crossbones on the product... Then I would have known what it was I was using. I loved Jaxson so much. It's hard not seeing him everyday... Thank You.

I purchased Hartz brand cat toy mice from my local grocery store and gave them to my cat to play with. They are some sort of product that is wrapped in rabbit fur. One of my cats got very sick and I found the rabbit fur under a bed with only pieces of the substance that was underneath the fur. It became apparent that she ate the stuffing (if you can call it that). It seemed to be some sort of clay like substance.

I tried to find out what the substance was but had no luck. How can a company sell toys for animals that will cause them harm if they ingest it? I have given all of my cats these same toys made from another company for decades and never had any problems with them trying to eat them or becoming ill from them.

I ended up giving her an enema and the stuff that came out was clay like and hard as a rock. My cat ended up dying from being so constipated from the substance and because we didn't realize she had eaten it until the damage was already too far done. I am devastated. She was 9 yrs old and never sick a day in her life. She's gone in one weeks time and all because I bought her a Hartz cat toy.

Hartz is misleading the consumer by not listing the exact country of origin for its pet treats, dog chews, rawhides etc. Hartz is listing several countries of origin on their packaging such as china,Indonesia etc versus the actual country of origin for a specific product. I am sure that Hartz is doing this because if they listed just China no one would buy their products. It does not allow the consumer to make an informed decision which is the point.

My dog had a blockage in his stomach which was filling from a toy that Hartz made. It cost my alot of money to have this fixed. If a company is going to make dog toys then they better be safe for our dogs. I paid for a $4.00 dog toy and in return had to pay $1100 to make it right. I will never again purchase from Hartz again and I will spread the word about what kind of products they sell.

$200 dollar vet bill. and he had to suffer a nasty abscess that the vet said could have killed him if i didnt get him in their. plus his sister that was given to a friend of mine died because the Hartz medication they gave her caused her to have Ceisures. thankfully he is ok and didnt die but it could have happened to him as well.

He washed three dogs with a Hartz shampoo & conditioner for dogs. It caused severe skin reaction redness and rush and all fleas still alive on inflamed skin!!!

He spend a day to disinfect and scrub area from fleas, burst the bomb, cleaned after it, washed animals, bought new mattresses and place them in a clean environment and they are sick now and full of fleas. It no veterinarian in that area to treat the dogs. Today is Sunday. That Hartz - sadistic shameless company close now. What can we do???!!! I want to cry.

i first used hartz flea drops on my cat three years ago,she started having seizures,i stopped using hartz and the seizures stopped after a month. i used the new 4 in 1 flea drops on my dog she broke out in a terrible rash all over her body,i gave her a bath and stopped using hartz and she seems to be getting better. i give my cat hartz hairball salve and my cat started having seizures again. it finally dawned on me the common denominator. hartz products!!!!

i have not seen the hairball medicine mentioned, but i think someone had better look in to that. my cat is still having seizures, but i have certainly discontinued the medicine. never again. there is warnings from 2001, but hartz is still getting away with murder of our pets and no one is stopping them. why? money??

i think i have caught things in time but the injuries are current,i just have to wait and see.

In December 2006 applied Hartz Advance Care Drops+ to oour 8-year-old cat. She suffered a chemical burn and hair loss over an area the size of a half-dollar. The cat has been flea treated many times before, but with one of the products only available from a veterinarian. I washed the area as soon as I saw the burn area and applied neosporin. She had a oozing sore for days which is now dried and scabbed over. We hope her hair grows back. Hartz should be ashamed. consumers have trust that products are safe and animals are defenseless.

They offer a pet tag for $2.95 - shipping included - and tell you up front that it will take 8 - 10 weeks for delivery.

I ordered in in the beginning of August - and it is now December - and I still have not received it.

Emails to the email address provided go unanswered.

The offer may be a cheap one - but why offer it if you are not going to deliver?

And if there is a problem, why not answer a legitimate email question?

We purchased the Hartz ADVANCED CARE 2 in 1 Rid Flea Cat Shampoo that we have used for our cat several times before with no adverse effects. This time less then 6 hours after giving our cat a bath with said shampoo our cat started to throw up food and then foam...We took him to the Vet to be treated for the poisoning. He had to be put on an IV to flush his system.

Even after spending over $300, he would not eat or drink for 4 days until finally he started to drink water and then throw it up. This morning at 2:30 AM Genghis died, before we could take him to the Vet again. After a period of time you develop a certain degree of trust in the products you buy. I never thought that purchasing a pet care product from a company, with as well known a reputation, would lead to my little buddy's demise.

I, the vet I took my cat to, nor my friends and family with pets will ever buy any Hartz product ever again. I plan to warn everyone I meet that has a pet not to use their products either. May you burn in hell for developing a pet care product that KILLS! If you value your pets health, Do Not use this product or any other Hartz products. A healthy Cat was affected in a few hours and then died in less than 6 days. The worst part was seeing poor little Erica cry. She can't stop, Hartz killed her best friend.

On Sunday September 25, 2005 at about 8:30 pm I applied Hartz Advanced Care Flea and Tick Drops for Cats and Kittens 6-10 lbs on my three cats. By 1:00 am that morning my littlest cat Jinx was having a severe reaction to the product. he was flailing around, panting, and convulsing. It was a terrible thing to watch. I immediately contacted the poison control center and they advised me if he continued to do so to take him to the vet in the morning.

I knew Jinxie didnt have that much time, I could see that he was losing his battle. I contacted my nearest Emergency Vet, which is about 30 minutes away from where I live, and they told me to bring him right in. I drove 90mph to get him there as soon as possible holding him and trying to reassure him we were on our way to help. Upon arriving at the Vet I was informed Jinx had a temp of 108 degrees, they immediately put him on IV fluids, a sedative to calm him, and gave him some other drugs to help with his symptoms.

I just knew that I had killed my little Jinxie. The blame we as humans suffer after an episode like this is unreal, I felt so responsible, I didnt know how I was going to live with it if anything happened. Jinxie stay at the Vet for 4 days and I am happy to report he is at home and doing very well, his coordination is a little off, but he is slowly returning to the kitten I knew before this happened. My other two cats also showed signs of the poisoning the next day but I gave them several baths and pushed liquids with a baby medicine syringe. They too are doing well.

My cat began to lick herself and the next morning when I got up she was acting strange and sickly, so I called my Vet he told me to get her in their now. When he examined her he told me that the drops I put on her had poisined her and she would have to be put into the hospital for treatment.

This is no ordinary cat, she belonged to my Mom who passed away in January of this year and I had promised her that I would take care of White Paw. It cost me $327.78 to save her life. I was so upset that I could not function.
