We got a new puppy 3 weeks ago and immediately went to the store for all the supplies we needed. One of the supplies included Purina Puppy Chow Healthy Morsels. We started adding this to his current food (Science Diet) so the adjustment to new food would go smooth. The entire first week he would throw up a couple hours after eating. We took him to the vet and they gave us a prescription for nausea and gave us some soft canned food to give him for a week. Everything went well for the entire week. So when it was time for him to go back to hard food, we started him again on the Science Diet and had no incidents for a week. Then we started mixing in the Purina Puppy Chow again, and he started throwing up again. Not sure if this was a bad batch of food, or if he is allergic to it. We had chest x-rays taken, and everything was fine, there were no obstructions.

I purchased Pro Plan by Purina and my dog had diarrhea. She is now vomiting also. I remember buying Purina One a few months ago and the same thing happened. I am just now making the connection. In between, I gave her another brand and she was fine. It seems the Purina brand is the common denominator.

We just purchased two choc lab pups and they were weaning from their mother with puppy chow so we purchased a bag so that we would interrupt their diet. All seemed to be okay, their stools were very soft but the breeder said all the pups were that easy and it may be from their de-wormer the week before. We purchased a second bag after they ate the first and after 24 hours they began having liquid stools and having to go out every 20 minutes. It's not easy trying to potty train little pups.
After a few days and not giving them anything but water and puppy chow, we took them to the vet. All tests came back okay and there was no fever but they suggested we change to a brand that is lamb and rice based and an antibiotic just in case. All symptoms were gone after 24 hours. It has been 7 days and they have normal stools and are better now than when we adopted them. Well, we ran out of the other food last night and I had to give them one serving of the puppy chow for dinner and they were up all night with diarrhea again(!) and all morning.
I called the vet and it has to be the food. They will run tests on my sample. And as for my cats, they are throwing up and I have stopped giving them Friskies and guess what, they stopped vomiting. I am not ever buying Purina again.

I purchased Purina Dog chow 8kg product code #** expiry date February 2012 UPC 55800 41072. Purchased September 11, 2010 opened bag 1 week later. Fed dog day 1 - diarrhea (I did not make a connection) fed dog day 2, diarrhea worsened. Day 3 - dog began vomiting. Discontinued food - fed rice day 1 no vomiting, no diarrhea, day 2 with rice, dog appeared to be better.
I fed Dog Chow again, same day diarrhea, vomited at night. Discontinued food, contacted Purina by e-mail to see if they had received similar complaints. They responded without indicating having received any other complaints and are sending a voucher for 8kg bag of dog chow. I am discarding this particular bag and will not be looking thru it to see if it is buggy or wormy. I am introducing a new dog food brand slowly with rice and am not experiencing any further problems with the dog's digestive tract.

My son's two dogs refused to eat the latest bag of Purina Dog Chow (Green Bag) he purchased. They have been raised on this food and suddenly they won't touch it! After four days of trying to feed them, we've given up. We think there must be something wrong with the food. Has anyone else had a problem? Can anyone suggest another brand? Loss of money for food. No physical damage because the dogs are too smart to eat it!

My dog has eaten Purina Puppy Chow and Purina Dog Chow and it was making her sick. I didn't realize it at first but her condition gradually became worse and worse. I don't know if it was the particular batch of dog food but it was over about 5 months of time. There is definitely something wrong with the food. I bought it from both Walmart and from Meijer.
After eating the dog food, my dog would get slow for a lack of a better word. She didn't play (she's only a yr. old), she just layed around and walked slow and seemed uninterested in anything. Eventually a short time ago, she had a grand mal seizure. Along with the violent thrashing and kicking, she had dialated pupils and foaming saliva. Directly after the seizure, she was disoriented and couldn't see. It took a half an hour for her pupils to go back to normal. She had diarrhea afterwards and for the next 3 days. I couldn't afford to take her to the vet but eventually knew it had to be the food because of the intestinal issue.
I then changed her dog food and immediately within half hour, noticed the difference in her. She no longer had diarrhea, she played, she walked at a normal pace and she was more cognizant of everything. It's been a couple of days that she's eating other dog food and she is happy and normal. Someone needs to test the dog food, I will guarantee there is some ingredient that is hurting these animals. I still have some of the Purina left for testing. I don't know where to notify people of this, I'm sure it could eventually cause death. Please help me get this information out.

I have two young dogs, Gunnie (1 year old) and Kennedy (2 years old). My dogs have always eaten Pedigree food. One day in an effort to help Kennedy lose some weight, I bought Purina Complete and Balanced Dog Chow (green bag) instead. Very soon after, within a day, Gunnie began having severe diarrhea and vomiting occurred for days on end. I did switch the dogs back to Pedigree 3 days later but Gunnie's symptoms progressed and continued for 3 weeks and are just now starting to decrease. He always had an appetite so I was thankful for that, but I spent many nights with him standing in the front yard for hours watching him get sick. His diarrhea soon turned bloody and I could hear his belly gurgling from 5 feet away. He did vomit occasionally, usually any food he had tried to eat or yellow foam. He would moan and squirm in his sleep. The first week, even after I had switched dog foods back, my other dog Kennedy started throwing up and becoming lethargic. Now, Gunnie's stool is finally becoming normal again and Kennedy has not had any symptoms.
My mom just called today to tell me a friend of hers just had to put her dog to sleep. At first, they thought he was old and had cancer. Then my mom's friend gave her dogs leftover Purina dog food to her sister and her sister's dog started showing the exact same symptoms that Gunnie and my mom's friend's dog had: excessive diarrhea and vomiting! They are taking their bag to be tested.
I have another story about Beneful and how it almost killed my best friend's 2-year-old dog but I think the trend here is obvious!

After purchasing, our dog became very ill (vomiting and diarrhea) after starting the food approximately 3 days. We continued the food for one week, not sure if it was the food or not. He continued to be ill so we discontinued. We now have 2 bags of unusable dog food and an ill boxer (with 2 small children in the house). Chaotic!

I purchased a 55lb bag of Purina dog chow complete and balanced on Oct. 16 2008,.. I just opened the bag last night and there are large chunks of moldy mildew clumps of dog food through the entire bag. This is the same brand and type of dog chow we have been feeding our dog for the last 8 months and have never ran into a problem...but this is unacceptable and a huge health hazard to our pet. Cant feed our dog the rotten dog chow.

We changed our 4 dogs food to dog chow. All of them started to lose fur, when brushing them it would come out in masses. The fur was all over our home. The dogs once had beautiful soft fur, now had thin course feeling fur. One developed a skin infection and had to be treated by the vet. I can see one dog having trouble but not 4. The quality is not there. We notice their fur, but what about their health in general what was this food doing to them. We changed back to Iams and now the fur is coming back.

Molly is the first dog I've ever had. We adopted her in early October 2007, from a local shelter. She is a three year old beagle. We fed her Purina Dog Chow (in the green bag) as well as periodic dog treats. She does not get human food, with the exception of a baby carrot now and then when I'm feeding the guinea pigs. After two months, she began having seizures, two in just two weeks. In addition, her stool was not consistent, sometimes normal, sometimes runny. She also scratched at her nose quite a bit. We were very worried. Fortunately, her previous owners had left her veterinary information when they brought her to the shelter. I called to see if she'd had any previous medical problems. There were none that they knew of; Molly had only been in for routine vaccinations. After the second seizure, I did some research online. I discovered your site, and decided that Molly may be reacting to the dog food. I did some more research to locate a quality dog food. We switched to Eagle Holistic Chicken and Rice. It's much more expensive but worth every cent, in my opinion. Since the switch, all of her symptoms have vanished. Most importantly, she has not had any more seizures, and it is now the end of March 2008.

I was reading the article by Lisa Wade McCormick dated August 13, 2007 titled Kentucky Breeder Blames Purina for Her Dogs' Death. Like Julie of Harlan, Kentucky I also do believe Purinas products caused the death of our dog.
Our dog was a healthy 8 year old poodle. It was right before the Thanksgiving of 2005 that I noticed one evening her dog was not his usual. He was just walking around slowing and I could see that he was breathing heavy. The next morning when I awoke to let him out he was breathing heavier and wouldn't get up. He had no energy to walk. I had to pick him up and I immediately took him to the vet. As soon as I got there and they took his vitals they rushed him to their emergency room, he died 10 minutes later.
The vet couldnt explain it, and suggested that an autopsy be performed in order to know the cause of death. The results came back and my vet said he died as a result of a fungus. The vet said our dog could have gotten it from playing in the dirt. It didn't make much sense to me, since our dog was well trained to stay out of the flower beds and would seldom be outside alone.
Anyway, about a month or so later, I read an article about the recall of Pet Diamond Foods and it was then that I thought it could have been the dog food. But my dog only ate Purina Dog Chow, it's all I ever fed my dog. I remembered that I had purchased a new 20 lb. bag just days before my dog died. I also know that because I also poured it in a plastic container to keep it fresh. I remember when I disposed of it, the container was still nearly full.
Even since then, I've lived with the thought of the possibility that I may have killed our dog by feeding it Purina Dog Chow. Also someone told me that during the same time period, a city police dog had also died under similar unknown circumstances and I even believe they purchased dog food at the same Wal-Mart store in town where I always purchased dog food. I never have tried to confirm that story, just something I remember hearing about.
Anyway, reading your article reminded me of my experience. I just would like for you if possible to pass this on to Julie of Harlan, KY. It just made me sad that someone else's dogs may have also died by eating Purina Dog food like I believe our dog did (actually it was my daughter's dog since she was 10 years old).
I don't buy Purina Dog food anymore, but's that because we don't have a dog anymore. Maybe one day, and when we do, I do know one thing, I'll never be able to feed it Purina Dog food, I'll always be too scared to.

I really think that Purina Dog Chow is contaminated and should be tested. Each of my two dogs were VERY ill during the beginning of this year (2007). After which all the pet food recalls emerged. However, since Purina Dog Chow was not on the list I figured it must have been something else they had gotten into. Each time, a source for toxins could not be determined, and I kept thinking the only thing they'd eaten had been the food, it had to be the food. NOW a couple months later, and still only feeding Purina Dog Chow my dogs are having vomiting episodes since purchasing the current bag of Dog Chow. I am switching dog foods immediately, but would like to know if the food, or what in the food is making my dogs sick!!!

We have been using Purina dry Dog Chow for the past year and have had no problems until October 2006, which is when the tainted pet products were released and our cocker spaniel had her first seizure in the same month.
Since then, she has had another seizure in March, which lasted longer than the first. We also started to notice a very large rash that covered her entire stomach and seemed to get worse as time went by. We took her to the vet and they ran a blood test on her and check-up, telling us she did not have worms or seem to have any other problems to cause the seizures and told us it might be epilepsy but he was not sure. As far as the rash went, her white blood cell count was sky high and she was very sick. He thought it might be an allergy but was not sure on this either and decided to put her on antibiotics for a week.
After giving her the antibiotic for a week, her rash did not seem like it was getting any better. We have seen the pet food recalls on the news and have also noticed the list growing everyday, so we decided to take her off her dog food to see if this helped at all. The rash has cleared up alot in the past three days, since taking her off the food and she seems to feel alot better...not sleeping all the time like she was.
I don't know if the food caused the seizures as cockers are know to have epilepsy but the date when she had her first seizure dates back to the same month that the tainted pet food supposedly hit the shelves. I just hope if there is something wrong with this food, they take it off the shelves.

My German Shepherd passed away mysteriously in December 2007. He fell sick and would not eat anything. He would only drink water and lay around. He was also drooling a lot from the mouth. Due to the fact that I have two dogs I never considered it being the food because my rottweiler did not get sick.

Purchased a 50# bag of dog chow. My dogs wouldn't touch it (it's been their regular food since '95). I found small reddish brown tri-lobular cat food morsels in it. The whole bag is tainted w/ this stuff & I have had to pick out the non-dogfood pieces each time i pour it into a bowl. If I hadn't opened it & had to use it (easter weekend) I would have returned it. I can't believe my bag is the only one w/ this stuff in it. I bought it from the walmart supercenter in loves park, IL.
