What is CarePlus?

CarePlus by Chewy offers pet wellness plans and pet insurance for accidents and illnesses. At the time of publishing, prices start below $20 per month. Wellness plans cover annual checkups, vaccines and flea, tick and heartworm medication. Insurance plans cover care for accidents and emergency care, illnesses, chronic conditions, and prescription medication and supplements. Both plans give you access to telehealth services seven days a week from licensed vets.

Chewy offers CarePlus plans through Chewy Insurance Services, its insurance agency. American Pet Insurance Company (APIC) underwrites the plans, collects monthly premiums and pays claims, while Trupanion administers the policies and manages claims on APIC’s behalf.

How does CarePlus work?

You can purchase a CarePlus plan that covers preventive care, accidents and illnesses, or both. These plans feature optional direct payments to vets, no lifetime payout limits, up to 100% coverage for prescriptions and supplements purchased on and live access to vets via chat or video.

CarePlus lets you work with any licensed veterinarian in the U.S. If your vet is set up with CarePlus’s partner Trupanion, you only pay your portion of the invoice after your visit, and Trupanion handles the rest within minutes. Otherwise, you pay the invoice in full and file a claim through the member portal online or by mail to get reimbursed.

You can cancel a CarePlus plan at any time and receive a prorated refund (full refund within first 30 days if no claims have been paid). Customer care is available 24/7.

CarePlus plans

CarePlus offers two types of plans for your pet: wellness, which covers everyday health, and insurance for accidents and illnesses. You can purchase one type, or you can bundle them for full coverage.

Insurance plan options include Accident Only, Essential Plus Accident & Illness and Complete Accident & Illness. These plans differ in what they cover and how much you pay for a vet visit after you pay an annual deductible of $250.

This is not an insurance plan. It is, at best, a no interest loan. Bought the comprehensive plan for 4 dogs. They did pay out for covered expenses and it was easy to submit claims. However, when I inquired about cancellation you are not able to cancel you til you pay premiums that match what they paid to you. You cancel early and pay them back or keep paying the premiums until the amount paid equals pay out. Extremely deceptive and I asked all the right questions but was never told this. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!! Just pay your vet bills as with these plans it is only pay now or pay later.
