Hundreds of thousands of U.S. households have an exotic pet, according to 2022 data from the American Veterinary Medical Association. Unfortunately, many owners find out too late that their nontraditional companions’ unexpected illnesses or injuries can require costly vet expertise.

Exotics “require specialized care to be happy and healthy,” said Dr. Laurie Hess, board-certified veterinarian who is the owner of the Veterinary Center for Birds & Exotics in Bedford Hills, New York. “All of these animals have very detailed environmental, nutritional and behavioral requirements depending on their species.

“As these pets will need ongoing medical care throughout their lives, exotic pet parents should consider getting pet insurance for their animals to cover illness and accidents,” Hess said.

Pet insurance options for exotic pets are limited, but we looked at policies and programs that can help cover expenses related to your finned, winged, scaly or fluffy friends.

Our top 3 picks for exotic pet insurance

When it comes to pet insurance, dog and cat owners definitely have more options. There aren't nearly as many insurance companies willing to work with exotic pets, and the providers that do cover these animals can feel less than trustworthy. Still, it’s worth seeing if the three providers we discuss below can save you money while keeping your exotic pal healthy.

Nationwide Pet Insurance
Exotics covered:
Rabbits, birds, pigs, goats, reptiles, ferrets and more
Discounts:
Undisclosed
Notable features:
Most comprehensive insurance option for exotics available

Nationwide offers an avian and exotic pet plan designed to cover the illnesses and injuries common to most birds and a variety of other animals. This company is an established insurance provider, and offers the most comprehensive accident and illness coverage to the widest range of companions. Most birds are covered, as well as other unique pets like mini pigs, hedgehogs and lizards.

Monthly premiums start at an average of less than $21 per month, according to the company’s site. The Avian & Exotic Pet Plan covers the most common conditions and treatments specific to the type of exotic you own.

You can take your animal to your preferred vet, including specialists. You will pay the bill upfront and then file a claim for reimbursement. The company can take up to 30 days to reimburse your claim.

After you meet the yearly deductible, reimbursement rates average about 80 percent for eligible expenses related to accidents and illnesses.

A reviewer from South Carolina praised Nationwide’s knowledgeable customer service and ease of the claims process. “They even covered claims that were two years old,” she said. “Every time I call, they are super nice and answer my questions thoroughly.”

Pet Assure
Exotics covered:
Fish, reptiles, monkeys, large cats, kangaroos and more
Discounts:
In-house medical services and procedures
Notable features:
App shows participating veterinarians

Pet Assure offers a preferred provider discount program that can save customers up to 25% on vet care for all animals, including exotics. Pay a monthly or annual fee to join, then show your ID card to any of the veterinarians in its network for a discount.

Discounts apply to the diagnosis and treatment of all injuries and medical conditions, including preexisting issues. To find a list of participating vets, download the Pet Assure app.

Pet Assure’s website offers quick online quotes for monthly premiums. We took a look at its current rates to help you compare prices.

At the time of publishing, its plans are offered at a flat rate, with options at three price points.  Whether you’re interested in a plan for your ferret, bird or horse, the cost is the same. The Basic Plan is $18 per month, the Essential is $34 per month, and the Premium runs $57 per month; each has a 12-month commitment. A 10% discount applies if you pay the entire annual premium cost upfront.

Pet Assure also offers a Mint Wellness Plan that covers routine care for exotic pets. The wellness plan works like a more traditional health insurance program. You file for reimbursement after receiving preventive or routine care at any vet’s office. The wellness care cost is the same as the discount program, with options for Basic, Essential and Premium care at $18, $34 or $57 per month, respectively. Wellness plans include access to the discount program.

“Pet Assure is perfect for me and my kitty and bunny. It gives me exactly what I am looking for and what regular pet insurance does not cover,” a reviewer in Connecticut said. She liked how the discount program can help close the gaps in coverage left by accident- and illness-only plans. “It comes in helpful if your insurance doesn't cover exams or the like,” she said.

ASPCA Pet Health Insurance
Exotics covered:
Horses, big cats, reptiles and more
Discounts:
Undisclosed
Notable features:
Customizable plans by reimbursement rate, annual payout limit and deductible

ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plans now extend coverage to include horses, without mortality insurance required for enrollment. This is health-focused coverage, which is different from traditional commercial equine insurance.

ASPCA offers two insurance options for horses. One covers colic and accidents, while an upgraded plan includes illnesses as well. The plans are customizable by deductible amount, annual payout limit and reimbursement rate.

Plug in your email address and information on your horse, then select from a range of financial coverage options to see monthly premiums.

As a sample, we looked at a quote for an eight-year-old Quarter Horse. The cost for a monthly premium was $15.26 for an accident and colic plan with the lowest payout limit and highest deductible. The premium was $126.67 for the coverage that included illnesses, as well as the highest annual payout limit and lowest deductible.

Our reviewers highlighted the quick and easy claims process, saying reimbursement was sent within a few days on average. “ASPCA pet insurance allowed us to treat our horse, Maximus, with the best medical care available without worrying about cost,” said Brianna from New York. “ASPCA processed our claims and sent reimbursement quickly without any issues.”

Kelly from Pennsylvania’s beloved event horse, Coal, sustained a tragic injury but has survived and thrived with help from an ASPCA plan. “I really can’t thank ASPCA Pet Health Insurance enough for allowing me to provide life-saving care to my best friend,” she said. “Coal had two hospital stays, major surgery, multiple rounds of regenerative therapy, X-rays, ultrasounds, emergency visits, a multitude of medications – and it has all been covered with no hassle.”

What is exotic pet insurance?

Exotic pet insurance is a policy that covers veterinary costs for a wide variety of injuries and medical conditions affecting exotic animals. Depending on your policy, you can get reimbursed for a large portion of the cost of diagnosing and treating eligible conditions.

As an alternative to an insurance policy, you can sign up for a discount plan. These plans usually provide up to 25% off your vet expenses. Unlike a traditional insurance policy, the discount program applies to preexisting conditions and services like grooming and dental care as well.

Types of exotic pet insurance

Most pet insurance policies only cover dogs or cats. However, with an exotic pet insurance plan, you can get coverage for any of a variety of animals, such as:

  • Amphibians
  • Reptiles
  • Mice
  • Rats
  • Hedgehogs
  • Sugar gliders
  • Guinea pigs
  • Rabbits
  • Chinchillas
  • Ferrets
  • Opossums
  • Mini goats
  • Potbellied pigs
  • Birds

However, you generally cannot get coverage for all animals. Venomous creatures, endangered animals, hybrids and any species that requires a permit are often ineligible. You also cannot insure any exotic animals that are illegal to own.

What does exotic pet insurance cover?

Coverage typically reimburses for veterinary visits, diagnostics, surgeries and prescriptions related to accidents, illnesses and injuries. But not every provider covers all of these. The exotic pet insurance providers on our list will cover different aspects of exotic pet care, including:

  • Accidents and common illnesses: Nationwide is the only provider that covers accidents and illnesses for exotic pets. Its Avian & Exotic Pet Plan covers trauma and abrasions, as well as dehydration, overgrown teeth, feather-picking/loss, many types of infections, diarrhea and internal parasites.
  • Horses: ASPCA offers health insurance plans for horses that cover most causes of colic, accidents and illness. It covers cuts, hoof abscesses, poisoning and trailer accident-related injuries.
  • Routine and preventative care: Pet Assure’s Mint Wellness covers routine care for all legal pets, including exotics. The most basic plan offers a wellness visit, vaccinations, routine bloodwork and a fecal/urinalysis test each year. You can opt in to more expensive plans that include dental care, grooming and preventatives. All plans also include access to the discount program.
  • Discount programs: These programs apply to services received from participating vendors for routine care like dental cleanings, exams and X-rays, vaccines, cancer care, hospitalizations, allergies, emergency care, spaying and neutering, ultrasounds and parasite screenings.

FAQ

When should I purchase exotic pet insurance?

Insurance for exotic animals works like regular pet insurance, but the costs are usually higher. To get the most value out of your exotic animal insurance, sign up right after purchasing your pet. Plans will not typically cover preexisting conditions. Since you cannot predict when illnesses or injuries will occur, it can make sense to maintain coverage for the life of your animal.

Is exotic pet insurance worth it?

Choices for exotic pet insurance are limited, so it can be hard to find a policy that works with your priorities and budget. We suggest comparing costs and coverage options to find the best exotic pet insurance for your needs.

Can I use any veterinarian for my insured exotic pet?

Most insurance plans allow you to use any licensed veterinarian. However, because exotic pets require specialized care, it's crucial to ensure that the vet has experience with your type of pet.
