BMW recalls 375,000 more cars to address Takata airbag issue

The Takata airbag saga goes on, more than five years after it began. BMW has recalled nearly 375,000 older models sold in the U.S. to replace the inflators in Takata airbags.

These vehicles were recalled earlier and their airbag inflators were replaced with temporary ones until the permanent equipment became available. The permanent replacements are now ready to be installed.

The BMW recall affects BMW vehicles manufactured from 2000 through 2013. They include the X1, X3, X5, and X6 SUVs, and 1 Series and 3 Series sedans, wagons, coupes, and convertibles.

This recall follows one in December in which BMW recalled nearly 75,000 model year 1999-2001 323i, 325i, 328i & 330i, and model year 2000-2001 323Ci, 325Ci, 328Ci, 330Ci, 323iT & 325iT vehicles with Non-Azide Driver airbag Inflators (NADI) manufactured by Takata.

These vehicles may have also received temporary replacement inflators, but the replacement NADI inflator may absorb moisture due to a manufacturing issue. This could cause the inflator to rupture or the airbag cushion to underinflate.

Earlier this month, Takata recalled 10 million additional airbag inflators that were used as replacements, saying they could be subject to the same deadly flaws as the ones they replaced.

BMW says consumers who had the temporary inflators installed in their airbags should take their vehicles back to the dealer right away to have the permanent equipment installed.

Five years and counting

In May 2015, Takata reluctantly agreed to recall 34 million airbags after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that the propellant in the inflators could degrade over time, causing them to spray bits of metal through the vehicle cabin when they deployed.

It was found that long-term exposure to high temperatures and extreme humidity makes the Takata airbag inflators even more unstable, meaning they are more likely to explode in cars driven mostly in southeastern states.

In the following years, nearly every major manufacturer was affected. In the most expensive and complicated recall in history, a total of nearly 42 million vehicles required modifications to their front-seat airbags.

Takata filed for bankruptcy protection two years after the initial recall, saying the step was necessary to enable it to complete the recall and repairs. The faulty airbags are blamed for 16 deaths in the United States and hundreds of injuries.

BMW models 323i and 328i with NADI airbag inflators recalled

BMW of North America is recalling 7,910 model year 1999 323i and 328i vehicles with Non-Azide Driver airbag Inflators (NADI) manufactured by Takata at one specific inflator production facility.

The inflators do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the airbag cushion to underinflate.

In a crash necessitating airbag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants.

Additionally, an underinflated airbag may not properly protect the occupant.

These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.

What to do

BMW recommends that owners do not continue to drive their vehicles.

The automaker will mail interim notices informing owners of the safety risk on or before December 31, 2019. Owners will receive a second notice when the remedy becomes available.

Dealers will inspect the driver airbag inflators and replace them, as necessary, free of charge.

Owners may contact BMW customer service at (800) 525-7417.

Water in the trunk causes problems for BMW owners ... and BMW

BMW has agreed to pay about $477 million to settle a class action that alleged the automaker put delicate electronic components in the bottom of the trunk, where they were often damaged by water leaks.

The lawsuit covers about 318,000 5 Series cars from the 2004-2010 model years. Owners may receive up to $1,500 for prior repairs. Only cars less than 10 years old with fewer than 120,000 miles are eligible.

In the suit, lead plaintiff George Catalano said that in June 2012, his 2007 BMW 530xi wagon shut down on a four-lane divided highway after flashing dashboard lights warned of a "complete electrical failure."

He had the car towed to a BMW dealership, where an examination found nearly two inches of water had accumulated in the spare-tire well of the car, partly as a result of water that had infiltrated into the area from clogged sunroof drain tubes.

Spilled water bottle

Other consumers reported similar problems.

Sandra of Orange, California, said in a ConsumerAffairs review that electrical problems in her car were finally traced to a spilled water bottle in the trunk, which BMW used as an excuse to avoid repairing the car under warranty.

"I cannot use the trunk for everyday grocery shopping for fear that something will leak and cause the wires to burn again, thereby creating the chance of a possible fire hazard," Sandra said. "Even if there is not a fire due to the burnt wires, there is the possibility of the car shutting down, creating an accident which could cause injury to myself or another party."

Other consumers complained that the problem caused repeated instrument failures.

"I bought a 2007 525i BMW a little bit over a year ago and this is the second time during the last four months that the tire pressure monitor (TPM) sensor goes bad," said Juan of The Woodlands, Texas. "Due to water intrusion in the trunk it causes for the TPM sensor to get water damaged. By browsing the internet I am now aware that this is a common malfunction for the TPM monitoring sensor on the 525i model."

Owners argued in the suit that the automaker knew of the problem as early as 2004 based on complaints, warranty claims, and technical service bulletins filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. BMW has denied wrongdoing.

The settlement must still be approved by U.S. District Judge Katherine Forrest.

As a result, the SCU may not accurately determine if activation and deployment of the airbags, safety belt pre-tensioners and head restraints is necessary in the event of a crash.

Class action says BMW stores delicate electronics in leaky trunks

The bottom of the spare tire well is not exactly the brightest place to store the vital electronic components that keep a car running but that's what a class action lawsuit says BMW did for years.

By placing the engine control modules in the lowest part of the car, BMW virtually ensures they will get wet yet blames consumers when the components fail and the engine shuts down, the lawsuit claims.

In the suit, George Catalano says that in June 2012, his 2007 BMW 530xi wagon shut down on a four-lane divided highway after flashing dashboard lights warned of a "complete electrical failure." He had the car towed to a BMW dealership, where an examination found nearly two inches of water had accumulated in the wheel well of the car, partly as a result of water that had infiltrated into the area from clogged sunroof drain tubes.

Refused to pay

Even though Catalano's car was covered by a Certified Pre-Owned Warranty, BMW refused to pay the nearly $2,000 cost of replacing the electronic control module.

The suit notes that BMW has issued at least six separate service bulletins to its dealers, alerting them to the problem but has not recalled the affected vehicles or issued any kind of public notice to BMW owners and has routinely refused to pay any costs associated with the repair.

Dealers were advised to place a sticker in the trunk area, cautioning consumers not to store liquids there, the suit says.

The suit also argues that although the BMW owners manual cautions owners not to close the trunk lid on their hands, it does not say anything about not spilling liquids in the trunk. It also fails to warn that the sunroof drainage tubes may become clogged.

Catalano also argues that, because of the allegedly defective design, the problem is likely to recur, since the repairs carried out by BMW did not include moving the electronic components to a safer locations where they would not get wet.

The suit seeks damages for owners of all various BMW models, including X5s from the 1999-2008 model years; X3s from 2003-2010 and 5-series vehicles from 2004-2010. It was filed by attorney Joseph Santoli, Ridgewood, N.J.

The bottom of the spare tire well is not exactly the brightest place to store the vital electronic components that keep a car running but that's what a cla...

According to the German automaker, potential problems with gas generators may rupture in vehicles produced by its competitors using similar systems from the same supplier have become evident in rare cases.

BMW says it is not aware of a case involving a BMW vehicle.

According to the company, this is an extension of last year's recall campaign in which 240 000 3 Series vehicles (E46) of the pre-predecessor generation were pulled in. Those vehicles are excluded from the current replacement campaign.

BMW says affected customers will be notified.

BMW sunroofs leak, class action claims

You would think that a car that claims to be the ultimate in German engineering would at least keep you dry when it rains, but a class action suit says BMW fails the test.

Walter Chang and Annie Stubbs, in a federal suit filed in California, say that because of defects in design, the sunroofs on various BMW models leak, causing safety problems including stalling, electrical problems and loss of steering.

The two, whose suit seeks to represent owners and leasees of a long list of BMW models, say that BMW has washed its hands of the problem, leaving consumers to pay thousands of dollars to repair or replace the sunroofs and interior components ruined by water.

BMW has known about the problem since at least 1999, when consumers began bringing their water-logged cars to dealers for repair, the suit alleges.

Warranty expired

Chang, who lives in California, said he bought a 2006 BMW 530XI in December 2006. Water leaked into the car through the sunroof in 2010 and he took it to a BMW dealer in Mountain View, Calif., he said. The dealer said the warranty had expired and BMW refused to provide any relief, Chang said.

Chang alleges his car continued to flood and he had to have the sunroff repaired two more times.

Stubbs, who lives in Florida, said she bought a new BMW 535I in 2008 and, in 2012, the car was damaged by water leaking in through the sunroof. Like Chang, Stubbs went to a BMW dealer, who said the warranty had expired.

The suit charges that BMW violated various consumer protection laws by failing to act on the alleged defect and says it "actively concealed and failed to disclose" the problem to consumers who paid tens of thousands of dollars for their vehicles.

Chang and Stubbs say the problem occurs in "every single" vehicle covered by the lawsuit. They are represented by Stephen M. Harris, an attorney with the Knapp, Petersen and Clarke law firm.

No kid gloves

BMW does not exactly endear itself to customers who experience sunroof problems, judging from comments from consumers like "V" of San Francisco, who wrote to us last year:

"I contacted BMW customer relations as my sunroof was not closing properly. I had extended warranty but I received a follow-up call to notify me that BMW would not honor the repairs. My request for an additional escalation path was denied," V said. "I requested the physical street address for the corporate office in N.J., which I was also denied. BMW customer relations sucks big time!"

Sunroofs aside, warranty issues are a sore point with many of the consumers who post about their experiences, like Patrick of Monroe Township, N.J.

"I paid for a platinum extended warranty on my 2008 BMW X5 to extend coverage to 7 years or 100,000 miles. I did so because of the numerous major problems I had with the vehicle after initial purchase," he said. "During a routine service, I was told that I needed thrust bushings replaced at a cost of over $1,000.

"When I asked if they were covered under the platinum warranty they said no. I went to BMW's website and found that they ARE listed as covered," Patrick said. "When I pursued this with both the dealer and BMW USA, I was told that they are not covered if replacement is due to normal wear and tear, and that I failed to read the small print on their website. They said if it was a defect in the product they would cover it."

This was not exactly the answer Patrick wanted to hear.

"So I guess everything that I paid for under this contract is subjective based on their opinion. They do not even identify which items specifically are subject to this 'wear and tear' clause. So I guess if my navigation system breaks, they will claim I used it too much!"

BMW recalls variety of vehicles

BMW has issued a couple of recalls to rectify electrical and braking problems.

In the first, the automaker is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 1-Series coupes and convertibles manufactured December 2007 through July 2011; and 2007-2011 3-Series coupes and convertibles manufactured March 2007 through July 2011; 2007-2011 3-Series sedans manufactured March 2007 through October 2011; 2007-2011 3-Series sports wagons manufactured March 2007 through June 2011; and 2009-2011 Z4 vehicles manufactured March 2009 through June 2011.

The connector for the positive battery cable connector and the corresponding terminal on the fuse box may degrade over time. The resulting high current flow and heat from electrical resistance may lead to a breakage of the connection, and a loss of electrical power to the vehicle. If there is a loss of electrical power to the vehicle, the vehicle may unexpectedly stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the positive battery cable connector and secure it with an improved method, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in March 2013.

The second recall involves certain model year 2007-2010 X5 SAV vehicles, manufactured September 12, 2006, through March 18, 2010 and equipped with an 8-cylinder engine.

The brake vacuum pump may leak a small amount of lubricating oil into the hose. The contamination could result in a loss of power assist braking.

The loss of power assist in braking could increase stopping distance and lead to a vehicle crash.

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake vacuum line with one that contains a check valve, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in February 2013.

For both recalls, owners may contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or by email BMW at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com.

'BMW on Demand' Coming to New York

Always wanted a BMW but thought you couldn't afford one?  Well, maybe you can't but you may soon be able to afford to rent one for a little while.

BMW Group Financial Services is launching a pilot project called BMW on Demand at BMW dealerships next month in the New York metropolitan area.

Customers will be able to make reservations for a BMW 328i online starting Aug. 13, said Ed Robinson, CEO of the finance company in Woodcliff Lake, N.J. Pricing will be disclosed later.

Cars will be available for rental by the hour, day or weekend, according to the company's website. The program will initially be limited to New York, New Jersey and Connecticut and will at least through year-end.

BMW is hoping the program will spur demand for new BMWs. After the cars have been in the rental fleet for a year or so, they will be offered to dealers for sale as used cars, just as off-lease cars are now handled.

"BMW on Demand will fit the market niche between car sharing and rentals," Robinson said in an interview with Automotive News.

BMW's X1 Sub-Compact SUV Headed for U.S. This Fall

BMW's X1, billed as a "premium subcompact," will hit U.S. markets this fall, after selling more than 275,000 units in global markets. The U.S. version, built in Leipzig, Germany, includes new energy-saving features including brake energy regeneration, auto-start and the ECO PRO package of fuel-saving technologies.

The new 2013 BMW X1 will arrive in BMW showrooms in the fall of 2012 starting at an MSRP of $31,545 (including $895 Destination and Handling).

BMW likes to say it invented the premium subcompact but concedes the segment is now highly competitive. BMW has had no trouble competing effectively, however, and demand for the X1 is so strong in China that the automaker has opened a plant Tiexi in Shenyang Province to serve the Chinese market.

Consumers rate BMW

The arrival of the BMW X1 to the U.S. "coincides with an update that includes exterior and interior refinements as well as a host of BMW EfficientDynamics technologies," the company said. Another element of the update is the availability of BMW Lines for the first time in an SAV (BMW's term for subcompact SUV), as an alternative to the base trim level.

"Both the BMW xLine and BMW Sport Line offer exclusive design and equipment features. The xLine emphasizes the robust versatility of the new BMW X1 while the Sport Line accentuates its performance and handling. For enthusiasts who want to accentuate the sporting character of their X1 even further, an M Sport Package is also available," BMW said.

The X1 also offers something you may not associate with a BMW -- a four-cylinder engine. The new 2.0-liter turbo-charged powerplant delivers 240 horsepower at 5,000 rpm with maximum torque of 260 lb-ft is developed at 1,250 rpm and remains constant up to 4,800 rpm. It is mated to BMW's latest 8-speed Steptronic automatic. This combination powers the X1 sDrive28i and xDrive28i from 0-60 mph in 6.2 and 6.3 seconds respectively. Preliminary EPA mileage estimates are 24 mpg city/33 mpg highway/27 mpg combined for the X1 sDrive28i while the AWD X1 xDrive28i has preliminary EPA estimates of 22 mpg city/30 mpg highway/25 mpg combined.

California Class Action Says BMW Software Causes Engine Problems

A class action filed in California yesterday says that software unilaterally installed by BMW on several turbocharged models led to dangerous turbo lag and other engine problems.

The suit, brought in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, implicates the BMW 1-, 3-, and 5-Series lines, as well as the Z4 convertible, X5 sport utility, and X6 crossover. All subject vehicles were manufactured between 2007 and 2010 and are equipped with the "N54" engine, a three-liter six-cylinder motor equipped with a twin turbo.

According to the suit, BMW tried to remedy an "undisclosed defect" with the cars by installing an updated version of its so-called "Engine Control Unit" (ECU) software. The defect allegedly originated in the cars' turbochargers, fuel pumps, gas waste mechanisms, and/or turbo software.

The plaintiffs contend that BMW installed the updated ECU software without customers' permission and, in some cases, without their knowledge. The complaint says that BMW installed the software "whenever one of the vehicles in question appeared in the service department of a BMW dealership, regardless of the reason for the service visit." Thus, consumers who experienced "problems with loud rattling...under the hood," for example, were unwittingly outfitted with updated ECU software and sent on their way.

Shortly after the software update, consumers began to complain of engine problems, specifically "loss of power in the lower RPM [revelations per minute] range, decreased fuel efficiency, and most notably, turbo acceleration lag."

Turbo lag, a little-known but potentially dangerous phenomenon, describes a delay between the time a turbocharged car's accelerator is depressed and the time its engine develops enough power to properly accelerate. Turbo lag presents an especially serious risk if it occurs on a highway on-ramp or other area where traffic is moving quickly.

According to the suit, BMW at first dismissed consumers' complaints, assuring them that their respective experiences were "normal." As the complaints continued to grow in number, BMW allegedly installed more ECU updates in a futile attempt to make the problems go away. The plaintiffs also contend that BMW quietly did away with ads bragging that the automaker "eliminated turbo lag altogether."

The class is being represented by Wayne Barney of Orange County. Barney began experiencing turbo lag after his 2007 BMW 335i was serviced for a faulty fuel pump. Barney communicated his concerns to BMW several times, but was "repeatedly assured that he was mistaken about the existence of any problems."

The suit alleges breach of implied and express warranties; breach of the covenant of good faith and fair dealing; deceptive trade practices; and breach of the Magnuson-Moss Act, a federal statute that governs consumer product warranties. The plaintiffs accuse BMW of "us[ing] ECU software to deceive its customers and avoid the cost and labor of properly resolving the hardware problems, which required actual engine work and/or part replacement that was covered under BMW's warranty." The class is seeking compensatory damages and an injunction.

BMW Recalls 2008-09 M3s with Double Clutch Option

November 24, 2008
BMW is recalling about 2,500 M3 vehicles from the 2008-2009 model years with an optional double clutch transmission.

The problem involves the double clutch gearbox. In a situation of rapid deceleration, the transmission software may perform a multistage downshift. At low speeds, it is possible that the engine could stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will reprogram the engine and transmission electronic control unit free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in November.

Mini Cooper Recalls Some Models

BMW's MINI Cooper division is recalling 2009 John Cooper Works and JCW Clubman models to resolve a brake system problem.

In its filing with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), Mini said that vehicles equipped with 16-inch diameter front brake discs rather than 17-inch discs, under conditions of intense brake usage, could experience reduced braking performance.

MINI dealers will inspect the front brake discs and pads of the cars, and, if necessary, replace them at no charge to owners, MINI said. The company said that no accidents or injuries related to the brake issue have been reported.

JCW owners should receive a recall notice in the mail this month. Owners can contact BMW at 1-866-275-6464, or by e-mail at mini.assistance@askminiusa.com, if they would like to make inspection arrangements before the notice arrives.

BMW Automatic Transmissions Prone to Failure

The BMW automatic transmission that is failing through the country wins this week's "Lemon of the Week" Award.

The transmission failure is one of the most expensive and widespread automobile repair bills plaguing consumers today, according to our readers. The faulty automatic transmission is in use, when it works, in many used BMW sedans across the country.

Consumers from all over the U.S. are reporting the failure. Without notice, the reverse gear stops working in BMWs, many of them the popular 323i luxury sedan.

BMW service centers charge as much as $7,000 to repair the transmission, according to ConsumerAffairs.com readers.

Here are a few examples:

John in Memphis, Tennessee:

After reading this site I feel lucky that I made it this far without this issue. I've driven my 1999 BMW 323i for the past year with no problems.

I bought it used at an extremely discounted price, but now I see why. I got up for a 4 a.m. road trip and my car lost its reverse gear.

I didn't try to drive it. I thought it was a dealer mistake because I just had it serviced the day before.

I came inside to do a quick web search and found this site. Boy am I disappointed.

Garrett in Carlsbad, California:

My 2000 BMW 323i won't go into reverse. The car has 61,000 miles runs great but the other day the car just stopped going into reverse.

The transmission acts like it is in neutral. After a little research this looks like a very common problem.

Something needs to be done.

Kevin in Middletown, New Jersey

BMW says I need a rebuilt transmission. BMW says the cost will be $6,883.00.

I called a local transmission shop for an estimate. I said I have a BMW but before I could continue he stopped me and said "let me guess, no reverse?" I said yeah, he said and, "It's a 2000 3 series." Amazing. All I said was I have a BMW.

His repair will be $2,200 BMW wanted $6,883.

Jorge in Miami, Florida

I have a BMW 2000 323i that fails to go into reverse. The dealer wants $6,000 to replace the transmission.
